Now back to the airport again
Yet another day of lulz
November's power bill in, $25 for 3000kwh
I am so happy not to have had to visit any airports lately
Eh, there was 40 people this morning at the airport that I saw
Your whole village was there?
In the countrys biggest airport
About 50 in this flight to LA
Here comes Satan Claws
It's beginning to look a lot like fishmen.
Everywhere I go.
Check out my music and movies at: http://reberclark.com
I originally created and uploaded this video and "Carol of the Old Ones" to the www.yog-sothoth.com website. It looks like they've both made the rounds on the internet, including other postings of them on YouTube! They were done with permisssion from Andrew Leman and Sean Branney of the H....
Beyond the mountains of madness you say?
Fun thing about my Chromebook, I sometimes panic in the security checkpoint in the airport
Because I think I have forgotten it
But it's just so damn light
Amazing all the weight you save by not needing Windows π
God damn Iβm stuffed @peak cloud. That chicken was great!
Haha you ended up trying it? I was thinking about making some this week. Itβs also great for making homemade chicken taquitos!
Chicken taquutos π
I'm out of work with the covid, so of course I've been automating all the things. I also decided to build a new home server. Ordered the server chassis from Newegg two days ago and they said it wouldn't be here until the 11th-15th sometime. Figured I wouldn't be able to build the server until after I was back at work. Just got an email from them saying it's on a truck to be delivered today! Just wanted to share my joy there
π
Wonderful!
hah, I really needed quicksync or it probably would have been
π€’
That said, I had a look at the newest Norwegian supercomputer today
It's running on AMD
Great for that workload
Betzy
The supercomputer is named after Mary Ann Elizabeth (Betzy) Stephansen, the firstΒ Norwegian woman with a Ph.DΒ in mathematics.
The most powerful supercomputer in Norway
Betzy is a BullSequana XH2000, provided by Atos, and will Β give Norwegian researchers more than 5 times more capacity than previously, with a theoretical peak performance...
atx malding while AMD takes over the market
"market"
It's great for supercomputers tbh
For any general workloads it doesn't make sense, with licensing cost
It's all fanboi wanking
Also of the handfuls of amd systems I've seen outside of supercomputers they have all been returned
Because they performed shite, Rome might change that though
Since when do lumberjacks and lumberjills need supercomputers? π€·π»ββοΈ But I guess the same could be asked about cowboys and cowgirls.
what's that Raspberry Pi room presence thing called?
Room assistant
well that was easy, thanks
(not exclusively Pi though)
I didnβt have much luck with that one when I had HA on a pi. π But I didnβt try too hard, either.
I think it works decently well with an Apple Watch. I'll see in a bit
gotta have a negative covid test to go back to work (which is dumb). I called a place that's supposed to be walk-in and they're scheduling appointments now. Next one isn't until Friday and test takes 4-5 days to return. Looks like I'm stuck out of work another week or two. Oh no! What ever will I do.
If youβre in the US, one place thatβs doing by appt is CVS, if thereβs one near you. Also might be worth checking MinuteClinic to see if they have other locations that are administering them.
I'm honestly hoping my test comes back positive again so I get another couple weeks off work
Here they do same day tests now
shhh! Don't let my boss hear
You know you are aboard an airplane when
Also lol people who don't rename their devices
@clear ferry re AMD.
My truenas box would be AMD but I can't buy anything non epyc that is ECC cerified, whilst E3s are easily picked up.
My router would be an AMD but I got my whole system for 2000 sek, which is what a motherboard and CPU alone would have cost.
My hypervisor machine will 99% certainly be an AMD though!
Starting on the Home-Assistant journey. Wish me luck! Been only running HomeKit and HomeBridge.
godspeed
@spare perch soon you will have 4534 rgb lights, all individually controlled by your vacuum cleaner, that you have yet to buy
Don't use a raspi 2 on the old version of python. ask me how I know
How do you know?
I have a raspberry pie 4 4gb ram
I love the way it looks.l from a UI standpoint but I gotta figure out how to make it work in HomeKit
I have the bridge added but reading up now how to actually add things to it lol
So, story time. Once upon a time when I was a young racoon I set up home assistant. And because I was a noob, I did a Venv install using python that was up to date then.
Fast forward to today and I am stuck on 0.96.5, because my python is too old. And I CBA fixing it. So I will redo it all
@last cedar but you don't have to pay licensing fees for your hypervisor ;-)
shots fired
Raspberry pi π€’

@shy comet how are things in LA? Any new shutdowns ?
were back to march restrictions @tidal bronze all non-essentials closed
no outdoor dining either
Oh boy.
@clear ferry good job , you made him erase his message.. bully
Sounds like here... except you guys get better weather.
@shy comet do you know if things are crazy at Costco etc?
@shy comet "all non-essentials closed" so 99.9% of everything is closed.. wow
@tidal bronze no idea im not leaving my house lol
only oging to doctor appointments and stuff
Coming back to LA after a week of radio silence
finally watched the LotR trilogy lol took a while to watch it all
Shits turn upside down.
i mean to me nothing has changed i dont go out
turns? it's been sideways since the 80's..
Lulz murica
70's i mean
Here comes the village ********
lol
what really sucks is they shut down overnight camping
so there goes the RV idea for a vacation lol
You go camping or glamping?
homeless don't use rv's anyways so all good
i figured hotel on wheels...safest way to ensure you are away fromm people lol
Glamping ok. Camping not so much.
I should buy a Hytte
yea we only glamp lol
Yep. Now that makes sense
ahha
Man there is this place up north, private glamping area with a natural pool etc. You will like it. I will send the link
Hi all, is this the right place to ask questions about ESPHome
No
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32, with a native integration for Home Assistant.
You can find their documentation here, and get help with ESPHome itself here in the #diy-archived channel (#integrations-archived for the integration). They also have their own Discord server too.
Command '~esphome' was invoked by: Tinkerer
βοΈ
cheers π
π
This is the lounge. It's the right place to ask about kicking back in your sofa and watching movies.
Or Racoons
Blue movies?
You can watch blue movies if you want π€
Racoon movies?
@clever mortar kicking back in your sofa aand watching racoons, or kicking racoons in their back and watching moves
worried racoon noises
There's a difference?
@tidal bronze yea def do sounds interesting π
What did we do to deserve racoons
It's our punishment for something.
@clear ferry great sideburns π
What about his chest hair? π
We know that's not you. There's hair on its head.
LMAO
Speaking of, I'm currently trying out blades, the merkur was ok, the Timor is also ok, I like the Derby extra, and I'm afraid to try the feather
Feather server? Derby extra server?
he's talking about ass hair shaving
wtf discord just had 5 updates.. wtf did they change now
The 5th update was big. I think they're reinstalling atx' gif collection.
Fortunately I've had to deal with yaml for the day job, so I'm not too scared π heh
skip the yaml for automations, jump right to Node Red
don't like node red? Or just love YAML that much?
Blocky β€οΈ
I thought the same thing for a long time so I stayed away from Node-Red. Not only is node red more powerful, it's so much easier to use. The HA YAML automation just kinda sucks compared to almost anything else
say what you will about visual programming, but at least it's not programming in a markup language
Then you are doing it wrong
Well markup isn't programming... π€·ββοΈ
right 8P
Markup is just declarations.
And I haven't found anything I wanted to do that I couldn't do with the HA automations. No NR necessary.
that's kinda my point, doing YAML HA automations feels like trying to code in a markup language
programming is just declarations π€·ββοΈ
Functional programming wants a word with you π
Although I think atx prefers DP over FP.
Right, @clear ferry π
Yeah, I haven't delved into HA's YAML yet but from what I've heard it does kind of sound like that. I think an analogy that might ring more true for people would be to picture if someone made a programming language out of XML tags. I've worked with a system where they did that, it was pretty miserable. At that point just let me use a real programming language.
HA YAML is cool...but give node red a shot
also, I didn't know Paulus was in San Diego. I hope they do some meetups down here post-covid
First he has to move back π
not only that but we need our bars open too π
oh look another discord update today lol
ah, the porn area
Sweet, I'll try out node red - I don't mind visual editors personally. Is it just a view on top of the YAML files, or does it have its own storage of the configuration data? Which is to ask... if I build something in Node Red and like it, but then want to move away from Node Red, will I lose whatever I set up?
it's very much its own thing
Ah, understandable
Node-Red is an automation platform separate from HA that HA integrates with well
Oh, interesting
The other way around
is it?
NR uses HA, HA does not use NR
Oh sorry, that makes sense
So when you use NR, you add a point of failure to your automation setup
Is the only real feature of NR that it allows for visual editing? Maybe there's a long term best of both worlds, where there's a visual editor that reads from/writes to HA YAML
(not it on making that, ha)
IMO if you are going to use HA you should have some level of comfort with YAML as some things still require it....so if you are just starting...dont dive into node red yet....start with yaml and if you feel you need something more then look into either node red or a python script
No, it might seem like that on the surface, but NR is a very powerful platform. It has a ton of different nodes that give you a ton of flexibility
you're definitely not going to escape YAML
NR uses JSON right?
it can, yah
Cause that's easier that YAML π€π
you don't attempt to script anything with JSON though
where as you're basically scripting with YAML when doing HA automations. Which is fine, but that's got its own disadvantages
I will admit the whole "whitespace as meaningful syntax" rubs me the wrong way about YAML, but I guess that also rubs me the wrong way about Python so I might just be on the wrong side of history
YAML reads JSON if that's more your cut of tea
Oh, til!
Still better that GNU make, where itβs tabs only.
I'm running the home assistant docker image. But I've been away awhile, and I need to do lets-encrypt and duckdns, and I see now there's a supervisor, and an "addon store" and so on. And it seems like that makes things very easy! But I do not feel like running a dedicated OS for this, I just want docker images. Is this possible?
fantastic, I just wasted so much time because literally someone decided to hide the information that this is even possible. good grief
lake placid, Hector Cyr funny line
30 degree here too.. how ironic!
you wear shorts and we wear coats.. such a strange world
How many eagle mustangs to a american degree?
we don't get degrees here, they're too expensive
seems to be an abnormal increase in amount of small planes needing to make emergency landings on highways
Eh it happens every couple of months
Docker is mentioned in almost every guide Iβve seen. HA OS was the last method I found out about.
They keep closing down all the GA airports so it'll probably be more common as time goes on
atxbyea: do you run your new Docker setup on bare metal or in a VM?
Bare metal
Nested virtualization is fun, in labs , or for lulz, not for my production environment
Didn't you use esx @clear ferry?
Or is your docker box another box?
I'm tempted to go VMs just to get the most utility out of my server
I have an esxi lab, a docker host and a bsd host
Biggus di.... ggus servers
π
A 12g 4core debian mini itx box
Smol!
Hehehe
yah my server weighs like 12000g
My servers lid weighs like 12000g
It is also my jump host, octoprint host, backup host and some more
Supermicro π€’
Because proxmox gives me nothing, it's a homelab wankery, I gain nothing from learning it since I will never see it at work, it is nothing it doesI can't do with other software
Freenas scale, which I'm moving to as soon as the migration docs are ready, or just plain old Debian
Or heck, esxi7
It does kube, but that is docker
I'm think I'm going to go with ESXi and Ubuntu LTS
Scale being mentioned is interesting
Ubuntu server π€’
yah yah
I guess that will eventually end up competing with proxmox (for what we want to do at home)?
I'm a casual linux user so the massive userbase is handy for support
Freenas has always been brilliant IMO. Apart from 10. We don't talk about 10
wait can you run dockers directly on esxi?
Most Ubuntu guides will work on debian
Sure, if you have enterprise licensing@tropic hedge
OH
linux is 99% stuff that just works, but that 1% is pulling teeth
and when I have a n00b issue, there's an extremely good chance someone else on Ubuntu has had the same issue
maybe when I grow up I can install more manly OSes
There is a good chance anyone running Linux has the same issue
I've worked across probably 25+ different distros across the years, mostly anything is transferrable
I just remembered cheekiness doesn't come across well in text so when I said "when i grown up", I'm 41 so I'll probably be dead before I'm a linux expert
I've found that little tiny differences between how distros do things is are the absolute, hands down worst thing to troubleshoot
short of maybe intermittent hardware failures
that's true
please don't laugh too hard, but what do you think of something like Linux+?
I'm 36 and I learn a couple of new products every year
or is there another cert for general linux administration worth pursuing just for the sake of directed learning?
Never even heard of, is that like network+ ?
yah
Wow Atx is ancient π
π€
I've got A+/Network+ so I get that the value typically isn't great
but as a directed learning path it might be worth my time
I've worked with Linux for 22 years, I still suck
It might be yes, without knowing the material
I took my first Linux cert 3 years ago, suse SLA
my network+ is so old VLANs weren't covered and we had to learn token ring and such
yuuuup
I did the n+ in 2007
IIRC the 802.whatever spec for VLANs wasn't anywhere near finalized back then
*back when I took it
Which was 2001-ish
yah, just looked, 802.1Q was 2003
I see 1998
This IEEE Standards product is part of the 802 family on LAN/MAN. This standard defines an architecture for Virtual Bridged LANs, the services provided in Virtual Bridged LANs, and the protocols and algorithms involved in the provision of those services.

shrug
βΉοΈββοΈ βΉοΈββοΈ
hmm, maybe Photon OS on ESXi
actually screw that for the reason I said above, too hard to get support for
VMware runs all their own flings and stuff in photon
It's hard to describe how hot it is with a photo
the color of your sky is different and I don't like it
You should see the sky in northern Norway in summer then @tropic hedge
In the middle of the night
there's just something very uncanny valley about badtelco's pic. Like that could be a picture from the street adjacent to me...but the sky is just SLIGHTLY the wrong color
Yeah I can usually tell what country a movie/tv is by their light
You should watch this btw @hushed basalt
IMDb
Directed by Erik SkjoldbjΓ¦rg. With Stellan SkarsgΓ₯rd, Sverre Anker Ousdal, Maria Mathiesen, Gisken Armand. In a Norwegian city with a 24-hour daylight cycle a Swedish murder investigator has been brought in on a special case. Sleep deprived, he makes a horrible mistake which is discovered by the killer he has been hunting.
I've seen the robin williams version
It's ok
@clear ferry would you just run vms and dockers on scale? Or storage too? Maybe not in its current form, obviously but say in 6 months?
Seems I should maybe be looking at a small ecc amd system for scale and use my e3 as a freenas backup server, or sell it.
Storage too, it is my current storage box with truenas core
I'm planning on migration as soon as ixsystems confirm migration support
So... Jan/Feb I guess
I don't know if I'm making the most of my costco membership
who are "leading baristas"?
Are they the thought leaders of their professions offering barista TED talks?
I walked out with 3 bottles of Glenlivet 18 last weekend. Money well spent π
costco in au? jesus they be everywhere!
yah I thought that was kinda weird too
@tropic hedge don't underestimate high end baristas
They do do talks, write blogs, etc
As a biochemistry major and barista at Beltway Coffee in Abilene, Chandler Graf has a deep passion and appreciation for the integration of science in the art of brewing coffee. Here you go
Do you Americans still prefer that drip coffee stuff π€’
Most of what I drink these days is Aeropress or espresso
Occasionally I'll whip out the French press
Definitely in terms of milk
roo-milk
Our espresso game can be a bit hit and miss though
You just don't know what you're missing Norwatian
My city has only been on fire once this year it's fine
Nothing compares to the French "coffee" though.
Truly awful.
Yeah... Swedes are crazy.
Rain is for fancy northerners
One of the best profiles I've read in a long while
Once upon a time, Avery was the lead engineer for Google Fiber's home wifi devices, building, managing, and monitoring the whole fleet in customers' homes. More recently, he's branched out into projects that are harder to explain. Before that, he started startups including one that deployed Lotus Domino in 10 minutes, and one that did unspeakable things to Microsoft Access databases. He's also on the board of directors for a Canadian bank. Nobody knows why.```
π€£
His product Tailscale looks interesting
Wireguard, with the same kind of magic VPN setup that something else does (but I can't remember what)
the solo tier is free too
Everything needed to connect your personal devices: one Gmail login, a basic admin console, and up to 100 devices. If youβre working with others, we recommend our paid plans that offer access controls, per-user identification, and dedicated support.
Love Wireguard replaced all my OpenVPN setups, except work.
My Rig came in
Haha
Keyboard backlighting is handy when it's darker
More like x2 power bricks π€’
old man, your typing skills need refinement
only time I look at the keyboard is when I'm in france or the US
fooking french azerty
and the muuricans with the inferior enter key
#Merica
π€’
Damned if I can remember where all the non-standard function keys are on every keyboard π
Touch typing is trivial, remembering 42 different keyboard layouts... I've got eyes for those
I know most by muscle memory on a no_no and en_gb keyboard atleast
and I seldom use anything else than standard 104 keys
only one that usually fucks me up is the lenovo that switches the FN and WIN key
heck, I know a HP-UX keyboard almost perfect by muscle memory, that shit is cray cray
dat is the shizzle my nizzle
get out of the 80's ya freak
login via key is so fricking nice when you have close to a thousand nodes to do stuff to
I'm starting to get good at for i loops again
Finished building Christmas Gift for Parents:
Also just purchased tickets to linux.conf.au π
put it on the barbie
There's one guy I know who is like
"Well achoothly it's GNU/Linux"
tbh, given there are a lot of GNU devs there I would say a good 20% do the whole gnu/linux spiel
Not too many neck-beards thankfully
A regular attendee wear's a top hat and looks like a magician un-ironically
The XL270d is quite nice btw
lol
@clear ferry No match for my Supermicro X6DAL-TB2
"Supports up to 12 GB DDR2 400MHz memory" "6300ESB SATA Controller with support for 2x SATA ports"
π€’
This is still in production, running as a Report server & PLC tag conv server
as with many lulz about "this meeting could have been a post it" also "this server could have a been a container"
rather should
oh right, you are working with shitty plc stuff
we can only run on windows
preferably windows 98
Its getting better to be honest most stuff is run in ESXI these days
windows vms you say
I keep promoting Proxmox, but clients are scared of superior technologies ahead of their time sadly.
you mean customers want to run on a industry standard hypervisor and not a shitkid platform
I see
They also seem to use Dell EMC servers instead of my preferred Supermicro + ebay SAS drives
Atleast that is better than Supermicro
One day they will learn
Have you had production issues with supermicro in the last 5 years?
You mean the 4 Supermicro servers I have seen the last 5 years ? That are collecting dust and usually not maintained because they were bought for a project where they needed a shitty cheap server while waiting for the actual servers they ordered to arrive ? π€
hard to have production issues when noone runs them in production
In other words Flawless history you say....
IMO: Supermicro > Dell > HP > IBM > Tian
Anyhow, I should go to bed.
I will sleep sound knowing my supermicro is working without a hitch π night
Well I started the process of refinancing my mortgage and got my perlimany quote back yesterday, went from a 4.875 to 2.75.
I don't understand those numbers
I'd be guessing interest rate
Depends on where you live, and what your credit score is, and what the deal is
If that's a 95% mortgage I could see it
I currently have 1.4% intrest, on a 100% mortage that I have refinanced once
well, it was a 100% mortage when I got it, but I have paid down over 50% already π€
over 10 years
Ours was about 50% when we took it out - 100% hasn't been a UK thing in forever though
and my house has doubled in value since I purchased it
Even our first was only 90%
Typically now it's 85% max ISTR
Might be 85 perhaps, I think it is 80 though
I just hear people complaining because they want to buy a house after never had a job in their life
and HouSE priCEs arE so HiGH
You can hear my sympathy for these educated twats ?
Right ?
Well, house prices and salaries haven't exactly kept anything like in step
usually the people who are pissy here want to live in the middle of a city
Even outside of it here, a house in not a shitty area isn't cheap
tRavElinG is sO tedIouS
Sure, if you don't mind three buses, a half hour walk, and then another bus you can live somewhere affordable π
like my sister, if she had to travel 25 minutes to work she wouldn't be bothered π€£
by car that is
in our hometown it is either the city or the the countryside
we grew up in the smack middle of the city
ish
Here, I bought our first house at something like 4 x average wage. When we sold it it was worth about 20 x average wage
That kind of differential is just bonkers
aye, I bought this house at 3x my average salery
it's since doubled in value, but so has my salery π€
But is your salary average π
actually I checked yesterday, it's quite average for a bachelors degree with 15 years experience
I have almost one of those
Put it this way, a London flat would average Β£560K, average London pay is Β£38K...
Now, London is nuts, but still
yeah
A friend of mine on only a little more couldn't find a place to live he could afford, while also being able to afford the commute, while living on their own. It'd have required flat/house sharing
same in oslo, you get 20m2 apartment for.... Β£350k plus Β£3k monthly expenses
@clear ferry those numbers were my interest rate. Dropped my monthly payment from $644 to $482
Different country π
most I've ever had even at 100% left was 2%
A previous colleague was on 16% at one point, and that was a good deal then
I paid Β£210k for my current house, Β£40k under listing, I've got Β£120k left on the mortage
and last time I called the bank they said without even visiting that the value was Β£380k
Yea I got my house 2 years ago paid $203k and put 60k down. Once I sold my previous place I put another 40k down on the principal. I have about 118k left. But the value is now 222k.
I bought my house in 2008 riiiiight before the recession for 160k with nothing down. Have refinanced once, reducing interest to 1.6% and cutting 5 years off the loan term. My most recent county appraisal (and comps in my neighborhood) have my home value sitting at 308k now.
The shitty part of that, is everything just keeps going up at the same rate, so "upgrading" is basically never going to happen unless I want to be trapped in a loan forever
I have not taken any extra loans to do refurbishing yet
but I need to do the kitchen
which will probably be.... $15-20k atleast
The only upgrade I did recently was my deck and patio project also put in a hot tub. That was all cash. My big project i want to do is an addition of the back of the garage for a laundry/mud room and master bath expansion
yeah, I usually do a room inside or outside a year
Outside rooms. aka gardens.
done three bedrooms, one bathroom, one utility room and front staircase and patio area and rear patio area, plus my greenhouse thus far
Might be an unpopular opinion but I don't see why there are so many people that think it should be affordable to have a home with only one average income in an expensive city.
I know not everyone couples up but that makes them the exception, not the norm.
Given that it's not affordable to buy a flat as a couple...
Yeah, London's stupid... but it's even more stupid to expect to afford it on a single income.
I would only get 2\3 of the loan I got if my wife was co-loaner π€£
Still, when we bought our first house, we could do that on a single income (just)
House prices have gone up far faster than wages
lol, same here. she actually would have tanked my loan
I'm not sure lenders would give me a mortgage for my current home on only my income but I could certainly afford to keep up with my expenses if my wife lost her job.
This is the area for the planned addition, even though the garage is attached I have no direct access from inside the garage to inside the house. Plan is to go down to the chimney and come out to the side of the garage. Ends being 10ftx10ft
Going down the chimney to get into your garage seems extreme.
Most people would add an internal door.
I wonder if Covid will change how businesses and workers think about London. Remote working means no need to have offices in 'the city'.
I just don't want them to flock north. I love the cheap living here.
I know various folks planning on reducing office space
Yeah, there's been a steady stream of companies announcing similar.
My employer will never give in π
They signed a new lease right before the pandemic. They'll insist we use the space, even though it costs the same or less to leave it unused.
Mine has already said that it's unlikely to expect folks to be routinely in the office after this and is exploring whether it needs all the office space it has
Screw the other benefits like saving your employees thousands of hours and thousands of pounds a year on travel.
I need to move to your place π
I have some time yet before mine's likely to announce the office is open but my line manager knows I have zero intention of commuting. Ignoring the other downsides of the pandemic, the working arrangement has been great for me.
There's one lot that have said they're closing a bunch of offices and making their staff permanent WFH
Think I'll be looking around at other roles if they try to force me back π
we are closing down most offices ww and moving to WFH
even moving our main offices from Cali to Texas
My buddy's employer announced they are subletting their entire office save one large conference room for investor meetings and such, and everyone will work from home forever going forward
@deft pewter I have another side door I use that opens up to the front porch. Unfortunately where the garage and house are attached is where the stairs are.
We're certainly going to keep most offices, even if they shrink, so that those who want to come in to an office can. Plus clients like meeting us apparently.
Some folks also work better in an office, apparently. How strange...
π€’
Yeah, that's what I think most businesses ought to do. Keep a small presence for the really important face-to-face stuff, do videoconferencing for everything else.
I hope that 'some folks' don't get to decide for all of us.
The folk that like to work from home never got to make the decision for them.
It's a strange set of drivers though. Going to the office supports a whole bunch of businesses that otherwise die.
One of our execs/VPs/whatever recently insisted that we all want to be back in an office because we love face-to-face collaboration. An internal survey they did the same week said 70% of us don't want to go back π€£
I know that of the 5 barbers near my office three are gone, never coming back. One is shut with no return in sight, and the last is trying to stay afloat.
Maybe it's a shame that Pret will close. Maybe it's not. If we embrace WFH, it's going to be more of a revolution than an evolution.
that is probably true more for some countries than other
My gut call is that mostly we'll be around 50/50 office/WFH going forwards - once all this is over
50/50 would be fine depending on how they cut it. Half of staff that prefer to always be in an office and half that get to stay home? Sure.
I only buy from the independents π
All of us working 50% of the hours on-site, hell no.
I don't mind too much - it's nice to chat with the team, and others. But maybe that's a function of my role (official or otherwise) and stage in life
There's all this drama around sandwich shops closing because no-one's in the cities to spend money but everyone forgets that the money we save by not commuting and buying Β£6 sandwiches will be spent on other things.
People aren't good at saving. We just spend on something different.
More PJ bottoms so you can "video conference" in comfort π
The money I could save by not commuting would easily pay for an extra holiday each year. There's an alternative business I'm now supporting.
You wear clothes for video conferences? Amateur...
I get that the transition won't be easy. Some business have already folded and others will follow. People will be between jobs until other markets ramp up.
But at the other end of the pandemic, we could have a very different way of life if people embrace it. And the same amount of money would still be running through the economy, just via different businesses.
The scaremongering is just because the businesses that are currently unsustainable want to be kept alive in their current form instead of adapting.
I'd love to see more small businesses out in the suburbs so I don't have to always go into the city centre. Some of these sandwich shops could just relocate. π€·ββοΈ
once upon a time the "village" we live in (aka scheme on the edge of town) was supposed to get a coffee shop, corner shop, etc. This might be exactly the time for those to actually happen
Exactly
Hell, I'd happily take a wander out at lunch for some good food and some banter
The banter being important, of course π
Or have more independents running deliveries. There's been a definite uptick in that throughout the pandemic, why can't they do it post-pandemic too?
Sunday lunches, afternoon teas. You name it, people are delivering it now.
I don't mind paying a few quid extra for delivery if it saves me paying for petrol and parking.
Walk > Delivery > Drive
But like atx said...
Pret. They're only bothered about their own bacon, not the people or the economy as a whole.
Anyway, back to the office now. My commute now involves toggling the KVM π
I got this at the beginning of WFH: https://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/346P1CRH_01/brilliance-curved-ultrawide-lcd-monitor-with-usb-c
Philips
The Philips Brilliance curved WQHD display with DisplayHDR 400 gives crisp, outstanding visuals. USB-C and a secure pop-up webcam with Windows Hello increase your productivity.
No external KVM. Built in to the monitor. Love it.
noice, I'm looking for 2x 28" 4K monitors now
Can't do that with internal KVM though π
But seriously, I'm back to work. Cya, nerds.
I'm really pissed that the substitution in for i is different from what pdsh supports π€£

how old are you?
I want to say to them, well because your generation played beanie babies with the market
31
Only 1/3 people my generation have a home
decades of rising cost of living and backwards real wage growth
my g-g-g-eneration
I'm only 8 years older than you
how much is a house in Aus?
where you are
for what size?
4 bedroom house in suburbs
So you need 20% deposit plus stamp duty, conveyance,
bought my first house when I was 25
"I can't afford my dream house right as I get onto the property market" π
found a special first-time-homebuyer's program
Settle for something more reasonable.
bought me a house
fast forward 3 years
cool, it's worth 90 grand less than I paid for it
Anything owned less than 10 years is a loss with stamp duty
How is a 4 bedroom house unreasonable?
how many people live with you?
Wife and kids
maybe that's the reason you're struggling to save up the money?
Ah got it, kill the family
700k is pants on head crazy
If I wanted to buy a house here in Southern munich you are looking at 1.2 mil min π
Nonsense
I shit you not
if I wanted to buy a house in Germany, I'd have a lot more problems ahead of not being able to afford it
There's no way the average house price is over 1 mil Euros
And here I am thinking 500k for a 4 bedroom is astronomical.
First home owner grants are a net negative here, they just increase the cost of the asking price by the cost of the grant
@spark orchid where?
Central Texas
@hushed basalt that's your government's fault then
People complain about Β£200k here π
It's almost as if different countries and cities have different situations
You can buy flats. But you are paying 7 to 12k per sqr meter if you want to buy
same situation in the US with government-guaranteed loans and university tuition
sure it's helping some but it's inflating the cost for everyone
this may be getting too political though
I have two friends who "bought something more reasonable" and they ended up $100k behind when they sold in 5 years
Because they outgrew it and had to sell
And the market turned and/or their build price was inflated due to bullshit first home owner grants
My house was reasonable, and then the recession hit and I was 90k upside down. Now I am sitting on 200k of equity
@spark orchid that house I was talking about earlier is still barely above what I paid for it 14 years ago
house I'm in now is up ~150k in about 5 years
that accidental landlord life
House prices are even worse if you look at how they've gone up in ratio to single incomes not just household
The average price for property in a German town or city is around β¬3,386.31 per square meter, rising to β¬5,844.44 per square meter in Berlin and β¬9,937.50 in Munich
What kind of mammoth house are you buying for that to equate to 1.2 mil?
@last dirge That's market dependent, I am sure. Here, the median price just keeps rising with no end in sight. Good for me, as I already own, bad for first time buyers
Because now both parents work instead of one person
@deft pewter
Red is flats and orange houses
bought my first house at 33 (2014)in a rapidly gentrifying area, got a first homebuyers credit, but not as much as it would have been if I had kids already. paid 350k CAD (5% down payment with mortgage insurance) for a very small "3ish bedroom" connected rowhouse with like 100sqm of yard in the city. sold it 4 years later for $545K and bought a 4br house in the 'burbs with a big ass lawn and a forest as my backyard for $525K
Prices go up higher than people. Can save deposit
got that HENRY DINK life
Houses that people bought on single income blue collar wages in my parents generation
Are now worth easily $1.2-$2m
we also organized our own wedding, pulled off somethign great, on the cheap and used all the money we got as gifts to put towards the downpayment, also scrimped, saved and rice and beans'd our way to getting the full downpayment
Quite often then sell the land alone for $800k+
neither of us had student loan debt (because Canada) (also because I never went to uni)
If you're buying or renting you're still losing to a rentiers market
But thats a discussion that ends in politics and capitalism
renting can make more sense than buying assuming rent is cheaper and you put the difference between rent and mortgage into investments
Montreal has traditionally been a place where renting makes more financial sense - in theory
but then airbnb fucked that all up
Rentier in this context means capital holder who creates no value, not someone renting
The person buying the mortage isn't the rentier, it's the person who owned the capital before the artificial inflation of price and realised the gains
hence airbnb fucking that all up - basically every urban property possible started getting bought up by people who would convert them into airbnbs driving up the price beyond what the regular market would have dictated
I think land price per square meter/foot is the best metric
Over decades
Then it's apples to apples
@inner vault we have these huge investment firms buying up properties here, having the same effect.
Land size has gone from 600-800sqm to 250-450sqm
Or even 200-350 for more attractive suburbs
But yeah that's basically what our prices looked like
Everything went out of control when they incentivised property speculation
50% tax break for capital gains from selling a house and letting people use loss making rental properties to reduce their taxable income
some places are starting to turn it around, like Vancouver, BC has a 10% tax on unoccupied real estate trying to curb this kind of stuff
Median price per sqft here was $345 in June. Cannot lightning Google the latest numbers
That is the price for an existing home. Land values are apples and oranges. In the city it is 10-20x the price of living 15 minutes outside the city
Yeah but if you map the price of the same area
It shows the real inflation
If something was $100k for 800sqm and house in 1990, and the land alone is now worth $1m
That's a much fairer comparison than saying a 300sqm subdivided house in the same street is worth $650k
They do a poor job (likely intentionally) of plotting that data for residential areas here. I can show you rural land value charts all day long though
Yeah it's likely intentional
Like how they usd "household income to house price ratio" on charts
Which hides: two income earners now instead of one (plus $40k/yr childcare expenses now), plus much higher commute times for a much smaller house further away
Like this one
Although, I think this is actually a fair representation
The issue is, it leads folks to believe that they can afford more than they should probably be buying
Yeah
The options for a lot of people are: buy a house for $300-$400k in a shit suburb far away from work
So now you and your partner are collectively commuting 30-35 hours a week.
And you're spending $15+k on commuting
Or WFH
And you're in a shit suburb with no capital growth so you're lucky if your house is even in inflation
Yes but WFH isn't an option for a lot of people
And most jobs are in the city,
There's a good chance everything's going to change post pandemic. Things might decentralise. Funding too.
The need to be in your region's major city won't be as prominent.
Federal government has signalled their intent to keep cities busy
My wife is a gig worker, so her entire job is commuting lol. I live 40 minutes outside the city, but my town is prospering. My home has doubled in value.
There's no regional cities here. Not really
Plenty of tech companies are planning to pull out of Silicon Valley. They know living costs on some areas are ridiculous.
There's only one micro city north of me with traffic lights
Then it's about 3000km until the next set
Central city districts shouldn't exist naturally anyways
But they do because of invested interests
And they won't let that happen
Agreed. They're there because business decided to be there. They can move.
A lot of them here have moved even pre covid
But the roads are still as congested as ever
If they do move they just move out a bit
But you still have mega suburbs 60km away being approved
So they're driving 56km instead of 60km
Government services are a bit employer too obviously and they've been adamantly anti decentralisation
So services businesses like consultancy firms will want to be close to them no matter what
Deloitte isn't going to move their office anytime soon
I can't think of a major white collar employer who isn't in the CBD
whats not to like about CBD....i mean it may not be as great as THC but its still good for you π
CBD just makes me anxious π
Or that might be the trace amounts of THC in CBD products, because THC does NOT agree with me at all...
Does anyone happen to know of a TV/monitor that flush mounts to a wall nicely other than the Samsung "The Frame"?
With a recip saw and no fear, everything is flush mount
The engineer already didn't love the size/number of windows in that wall, don't want to push it 8)
the problem is the connections
"the frame" has a unique solution to that
The Frame π€’
the screens on those rear projectors make a fantastic way to start unintentional fires
even on concrete
they're gigantic fresnel lenses
I have a "The Frame" in my kitchen that I like aesthetically. Samsung TVs are terrible though otherwise
I've got smurf tube in my wall where I'm going to flush mount the TV down in my office so I can run stuff down the wall
Smurf tubes? Is that like atx and his gerbil tubes?
same thing, but these go in wall and not butts
I built a shadow box inspired "frame" for my neighbors TV and ran the wiring in-wall. It still projected away a few inches, but looked finished instead of looking like a television on a wall
I have HA supervised on Ubuntu-unsupported! Because of other things, nc, samba,.. I want keep the system running few months to the point when migrating to debian. Will be the migration to virtual machine KVM virt-manager the easiest solution? Will the virtual machine effect ports for zwave and deconz? So I think, then is it possible to migrate in "few minutes" to get supported system or I missing what?

The Wyze home monitoring is only $4.99... but still no API
wyze π€’
Their products are decent
Especially the Cam v3
It's so amazing
But at least they are planning to add RTSP support
Yeah it kind of sucks
I'll keep my $20 chinese cams thank you
arent they literally the same cams? haha
Technically it is chinese
American company but made in china
And I think the Wyze cam v2 was the exact same hardware as a Xiaomi camera
I thought the wyze v2 was just a rebranded xiaomi
Yes
Well I heard they both get it from the same supplier so it's not Xiaomis camera either
Not really sure though
I think if someone makes custom firmware for the Wyze cam V3 I will buy more
Because the hardware is pretty good
oh XiaoFang maybe not xiaomi
because you can run this firmware https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks
So is Xiaofang seperate from Xiaomi?
I dunno now
either way, I'm pretty happy with my wyze cams and may replace with v3 when I can get them
I'm currently working on some birdfeeders with wyze cams integrated
I will say that the v3 is a huge improvement over the v2
The low light and dynamic range is a lot better
if i wanted to do a cheap wifi camera setup (where i can flash the cameras with local sotware [im fine with paying to suport the devs]), what camera would be the best and has a relatively easy flash method?
Things like that are rip offs on a way
Like video doorbells are another example, they are very convenient but are literally just an overpriced camera with a button
Not talking about yours, I'm talking about "bird buddy"
Your idea is cool
directly influenced haha, but yeah
I'm just hoping the wyze detection is good enough to record on a bird's movement
The detection is good as long as there aren't constant things like wind blowing a tree branch, rain, moving lights, etc.
My Wyze cams pick up everything that moves. I have constant nighttime recordings of bugs flying by
There are detection zones but they don't really work if lights is moving
Same, forgot about bugs
You can flash the V2 with RTSP firmware, but last I checked, it had a ton of bugs and it wasn't on their roadmap to develop it further
Also my dad has one point at his office pointing at a busy street and it records a 12 second video every 5 minutes
Mine are my primary home cameras, so I pay for the cloud storage on 2 of the 5 I have rn. If the bugs are active, I can have 8 hours of footage from overnight
I've been using rtsp firmware for a while on my 2 cams but only use them for baby monitors and don't do recording
I have the firmware flashed to one of mine, and it works fine, as long as the stream is not left open for hours on end
There is unofficial firmware though like jordan linked earlier
But I haven't tried it
If I check on that feed every once in a while, it never has a problem. If I add it to motioneye or blueiris and set it to record, the camera locks up after several hours.
I use the official wyze rtsp because the wyze app makes it easy for my wife to use also https://wyzelabs.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360026245231-Wyze-Cam-RTSP
Oh wait this is interesting
but I can pipe rtsp into HA
What you linked actually still works with the Wyze app
ahh
There is also firmware that completely removes the functionality and makes it a basic ip cam with RTSP if that's what you want
I might actually try those hacks though because I want to keep the Wyze app functionality
Bookmarked that link... I may flash one tonight
If you are interested, there is also this that I have been planning to try: https://github.com/openipcamera/openipc-firmware
But honestly I think I like the other one better because you can keep the Wyze app
I wonder if any open firmwares work on my dahua copies
jesus people are so fucking bonkers
everybody wants 80% retail value back for used stuff
YEAH THIS 5 YO MONITOR, I'LL WANT $150 THANKS, IT WAS $250 NEW BUT I BOUGHT IT FOR $200 3 YEARS AGO
also this one guy apparently has lost the powersupply
and still wants the same as everyone else
Mmm yes tis the shit
Just came in the post. Excited to see what I can do with these things.
Anyone else got the t4 yet? I believe they are only sold as EU versions for now.
dafang is the best https://github.com/EliasKotlyar/Xiaomi-Dafang-Hacks it still gets updated
dahua still runs that ancient api I thought so you don't need custom firmware just learn the api
That's why I usually have a pretty solid price Roadmap. After 1 year max 75% of current new price. After 2 years without warranty max 50%. Everything else depends and everyone else is a retard. Only hifi stuff is off the road since it doesn't know age usually
@clear ferry
everyone else is a retard
π€¨
I do agree for the most part
It should probably also go unspoken.
It's the truth most people don't want to hear. I love to tell people truth everyone is afraid of telling lul
Pretty sure no-one here's 'afraid'. However, there are rules about showing respect.
https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/ for those that missed it ... @boreal pewter π
This was not about nor towards anyone here
Irrelevant
@clear ferry aftermarket firmware for Dahua cameras?
Sonoff devices are cool
But the new sonoff basic costs more
And from what I've seen that quality control isn't great
Do you still have shopping malls in USA
Yes
Are they pretty much dead?
Well now they are probably dead because of the pandemic, but I haven't been to one in over a year
They were slowly dying before the pandemic
At least in my area
not that I've seen
I've seen that in various countries in Asia, but never in the US
Some, but most don't to my knowledge
I've seen some with giant Targets, and they may have food
Here every mall has two supermarkets
And there would be no other supermarkets in a 4km radius of that mall
Not including minor ones
So if you live in that area you have to go to the mall
Same here @hushed basalt
The top two supermakets like like 70%+ market share too
I think it's even higher in my city
I'm not sure why the malls are still popular though
It's just a few big stores like Kmart/Big W, then some more "up market" departments stores, a whole lot of little franchises and then a food court
Did Bezos kill your malls?
Amazon isn't as good here.
Maybe
Still better than Norways
Here I can order something and get it tommorow
@clear ferry
There's lots of things that aren't on Amazon
Or if they are they're more expensive
Of course it depends on a lot of things but for me a lot of things on Amazon are overpriced compared to local stores
So Amazon hasn't fully taken over yet
I'd say a big part of it is brands protecting their stores
Since they set the amazon pricing
Maybe
Remember Amazon is just a market place and fulfilment centre
But even Amazon owned brands are sometimes more expensive
Yeah it's pretty sketchy how Amazon can sell it's own stuff on it's market
Are they still going after Amazon for anti trust or has that been shot down
Yeah but somehow nothing has happened to Amazon yet
They can still have bots that automatically lower prices to compete with competitors
Why exactly shouldn't they be allowed to sell their own stuff?
The Apple store sells Apple stuff and a selection of other brands, right?
They also rip off a lot of products until they kill the brand
They make a clone of an item and sell it for less
That part sucks, sure.
They're aggressive about it but it's nothing other businesses haven't done before.
Before the VID congress was going to take it up.
Although it would suck to lose a brand manager gig at Amazon. π€£
I think that's why it's hard to enforce anti trust rules
Because Amazon could argue that smaller companies do the same thing
And the government has to prove that what they are doing is illegal
Well it's only illegal once there's legislation that makes it illegal.
And if every business can aggressively market their brand to corner the market, it's fair game.
I don't see how they legislate for massive brands like Amazon and Apple without it being targeted and discriminatory against only them.
I don't have much knowledge on this, but I think the US has some laws preventing companies form getting too big to where they have an unfair advantage bad for consumers
A lot of countries have rules around monopolies, sure.
You should read the history of anti trust laws
I think typically it's around acquisitions once you're already the market leader.
Well it's not a monopoly...
They don't have the majority of all retail yet, do they?
And Amazon isn't only retail. Amazon is AWS and all sorts of other offshoots.
So technically everything they are doing is legal
So people can hate on Bezos as much as they want. Amazon haven't done anything wrong.
Even the low wages people cry about... they pay at least what's required by law. Just like many other businesses. They just get more publicity about it.
Its along the same lines of Walmart issues, where some counties don't allow them
In the United States, antitrust law is a collection of federal and state government laws that regulate the conduct and organization of business corporations and are generally intended to promote competition for the benefit of consumers. The main statutes are the Sherman Act of 1890, the Clayton Act of 1914 and the Federal Trade Commission Act of...
I guess that is true
Amazon seems big but they aren't a monopoly yet
Technically what they are doing is competitive, not anti competitive
The problem now with Amazon is that, 90% US sellers have disappeared. Majority of them are Chinese shell operations.
Eh, I'm not sure that's true.
The US sellers were the ones that brought it to congress.
Sure, most things are manufactured over there... but that doesn't mean everything's run by Chinese businesses.
I'll accept that. But 90%?
You guys seem pretty good at defending your nation's economy. I doubt it'd get to that point without us all hearing about it.
The warehousing is here but run by Chinese operators.
Amazon doesn't have to be doing anything illegal
But they can change laws to break it up
Nopes its not illegal.
Amazon came to power from leveraging and creating laws that favoured their model
Not from raw business prowess alone
Congress will be busy with other things next 5 to 10 years. Amazon, last on the list.
Amazon already made billions not paying sales tax for years. Pretty sure all that $$$ would last for a bit.
I'm not sure what Amazon's worker conditions are like in the US
I've heard they typically leave work each day with all their body parts.
Lol Amazon
Could be worse π€·ββοΈ
Could be worse? Jesus
What?

@shy comet you running harmony with shield?
I am
I have two harmony hubs, one's being used with a Shield and the other is being used with a Roku
Key mapping works on the app ?
Seems to. The Harmony Hub shows up as a Bluetooth Keyboard on the Shield TV
Works under device not when in activity mode. Apparently, one harmony elite left the house 2 days ago π€£
not sure what you mean?
Oh, you're using the virtual remote inside the Harmony app? I almost never touch that, I have physical remotes XD
Lost one elite. So gotta use the app till the new one comes. Lol.
Yep with the physical remote no issues at all but via the app not so much.
How is the elite remote? Mine are just the IOT remotes
Elite is great.
So a normal Harmony remote with 6 additional buttons for controlling lights / plugs / brightness / scenes
I don't use it to control anything other than AV.
My one concern with the Elite is the battery. The regular Harmony remotes last years on a coin-cell, but the Elite needs to charge in a dock regularly...
Yep just drop in the dock when done.
