#

Then again, we're full of odd

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge It's an LG v35, factory Android 10 ROM

#

Not running anything 3rd party / rooted

forest edge
#

yea but it's not vanilla android if it's lg

subtle pasture
#

It's also possible the wifi chipset in the LG v35 doesn't support that feature

forest edge
#

dunno, don't see how tink's pixels don't have that feature at all

deft pewter
#

All those budget LG devices... ๐Ÿคข

#

Maybe Leapo's right. Could just be the chipsets. MAC used to be hardcoded, right?

subtle pasture
#

The v35 was flagship...

deft pewter
#

I was kidding about budget ๐Ÿ˜„

forest edge
#

i had android 9 when pixel 3 came out, and now sitting on 11

#

so it's possible it might be an android 10 thing and not 9

#

i don't remember

subtle pasture
#

Not sure this phone will get Android 11. LG tends to do two major OS updates, and that's it

clever mortar
#

Could well be chipset related in a strange way, even if that makes no sense

forest edge
#

UK privacy crack down lol

subtle pasture
#

@clever mortar If the wifi chipset doesn't support MAC address spoofing, that'd do it

forest edge
#

wait that makes no sense

#

cause mac rando would be a good thing for privacy lol

clever mortar
subtle pasture
#

A lot of chipsets have fixed MAC addresses ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

clever mortar
#

See previous statement ๐Ÿ˜›

#

I mean, come on, wired chipsets from ... 25 years ago supported that, and many of the first gen WiFi supported that

subtle pasture
#

Wired chipsets from 25 years ago? I wouldn't call that a common feature in 1995...

#

Hell, having a NIC wasn't a common feature in 1995

wild grove
#

got my 3com 905b!

clever mortar
#

Speak for your own experience ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I was working with wired networking in the late 80s

wild grove
#

and vampire taps too probably

clever mortar
#

Ayup

wild grove
#

twinax, etc

subtle pasture
#

Also, that feature going missing is more likely as time goes on, because shit starts getting built down to a price

#

You'll find plenty of Realtek NICs where the MAC is locked from between 1995 and 2020

clever mortar
#

Realtek ๐Ÿคข

#

We're talking network cards, not door stops

subtle pasture
#

Hey, they take up a GIANT chunk of the PC NIC chipset market

clever mortar
#

Well, at least one part of the market

subtle pasture
#

If you want to talk about common features, you can't not include Realtek

clever mortar
#

I'll stay with Intel and Broadcom thanks

forest edge
#

realtek and intel are the only two you really see in all premades these days in the US

clever mortar
#

I want reliable, performant, networking

subtle pasture
#

I mean, same, but that's because I want BSD compatibility

#

I rarely want my NIC's MAC address to change

forest edge
#

dunno what happened to broadcom.. don't see them anymore lol

#

broadcom was all over in early 2000's

clever mortar
#

They're still there, in the server space anyway

wild grove
#

yeah they're huge in oem space

inner vault
#

I didn't realize how important intel networking was when I bought my first thinkpad 6 years ago, ended up buying a replacement intel module to replace the realtek one, suddenly reliably wifi and bluetooth actually worked

subtle pasture
#

Intel has made some shit NICs as well, but they have a better track record

#

The Intel 82579 gigabit ethernet chipset is a total pile of garbage

#

My last motherboard had that. Wound up upgrading to a PCIe 1x Realtek gigabit NIC

forest edge
#

itel had it's own quirks with laptop nics

clear ferry
#

Realtek ๐Ÿคข

forest edge
#

got a lenovo z85 where the intell wirless nic is pure trash

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry Yeah, you know the intel NIC is terrible when a Realtek replacement blows it away...

clear ferry
#

Yes, but I only deal in enterprise NICs, so I'm blessed for the most part ๐Ÿคฃ

subtle pasture
#

The most I could push through the Intel 82579 in iperf was about 300 mbps, with tons of jitter / variable latency

#

The replacement Realtek NIC did 980 mbps (so, still a little low, but far closer to 1gbps) with minimal jitter

#

I figured this out while trying to get a Steam Link to work. I figured the Steam Link was just a pile of garbage... nope... Intel NIC was to blame...

clear ferry
#

The 82599 based ones have been good for the most part, unless you plug in an active DAC it doesn't like

#

Then the card vanishes randomly until you power cycle

forest edge
#

what in the actual fuck is this MS meet now garbage

#

I love they put this crap in windows with no way to remove it

#

here have some garbage on us.. your stuck with it

clear ferry

Uh oh... reading the comments now... they're planning on replacing the existing integration with this new one. That's going to drop support for a number of Aruba WAPs that don't support the API...

#

Like, mine is new enough that it supports the Instant API, so I'm alright

#

But one generation older and I'd be out of luck.

wild grove

I think that is going to change.

The existing integration will be updated or both can coexist

frozen fulcrum
#

where can I find ideas for automations and integrations people already use that I might like?

deft pewter
#

You just named two other channels. Ask there.

forest edge
frozen fulcrum
#

@peak cloud can you share the plex movie update push method?

#

i've been thinking about it all day :3

hushed basalt
#

Google must hate OLEDs and being power efficient

peak cloud
#

I haven't written it yet, that was just a test. But I have everything in place to do so, just gotta write the automation for it.

hushed basalt
#

All of Chromecasts behaviour wants to burn in static images and leave TVs running indefinitely

peak cloud
#

What you'll need:

  • Notifications for Fire TV (app on Fire TV), or Notifications for Android TV (app on Android TV)
  • Ombi or Radarr (for pushing)
forest edge
hushed basalt
#

It has text on by default

#

You have to turn it all off

forest edge
#

or just change inputs..

peak cloud
#

@frozen fulcrum Basically just setup a webhook automation and point Radarr/Ombi to it, then parse the payload within the automation and use the notify service to send it to Fire TV.

deft pewter
#

Do modern screens even suffer from burn in now?

hushed basalt
#

OLEDs absolutely

deft pewter
#

๐Ÿ˜ฆ

hushed basalt
#

Pros and cons

#

They have no backlight

forest edge
#

why would you leave the chromecast on?

#

as in on that input with the tv on

hushed basalt
#

What sort of question is that

#

Think of the tens millions of chromecasts out tyere

#

Every time a user casts a youtube video, it'll switch to that input

forest edge
#

and?

hushed basalt
#

Then they get left on

#

Computers and TVs come with auto off functions for a reason

forest edge
#

sounds like karma if they leave it on lol

deft pewter
#

No automatic standby? ๐Ÿคข

hushed basalt
#

You're talking about nuclear power stations worth of power savings when manufacturers change default behaviour

#

My tv switches itself off for all the other apps

#

But chromecast keeps itself hot

forest edge
#

what world do you live in?

hushed basalt
#

Ans there's no way to change it

#

If it just turned off it's hdmi the tv would take care of itself

forest edge
#

I've had a chromcast, the very first one they came out with plugged into the same tv since this whole time.. no issuies at all

hushed basalt
#

The world where things like regulations on standby power consumption exist for a good reason

#

Unless you're google then you can just do what you want

forest edge
#

you are talking about a specific use case device plugged into another device not necessarily designed for the purpose of being a digital photo album

#

if some idiot decided to change to that input then walk away leaving it on, they deserve what happens

deft pewter
#

๐Ÿคจ

#

When the most common behaviour is for devices screens to turn off, people aren't idiots for expecting the same from yet another stick.

forest edge
#

it's not the stick, it's the tv

deft pewter
forest edge
#

why make it the sticks responsibilty?

deft pewter
#

Because the stick is the thing keeping the signal alive.

forest edge
#

hell it was 35 bucks

#

it was designed to be a background photo display

#

why would it turn off

#

when not in use

hushed basalt
#

You can't set it to not be a photo album

deft pewter
#

It's advertised as a streaming device, not a photo album.

forest edge
#

thus you change inputs when not in use..

deft pewter
#

Photo album sounds like 'broken screensaver' to me.

forest edge
#

yea well it was on the vgery first one they ever made

hushed basalt
#

Do you really think out of the 10+ billion tvs out there in the world, the majority of them are turned off responsibly?

forest edge
#

who knows maybe idiots leaving it on and getting screen burn in's is why tv's are so cheap now.. be thankful

hushed basalt
#

TVs range from cheap to very expensive

deft pewter
#

Can the Chromecast wake a TV that's on standby?

hushed basalt
#

Yep

forest edge
#

through hdmi

deft pewter
#

And it can then keep it on indefinitely, yes?

hushed basalt
#

Yep

forest edge
#

mine dosen't

deft pewter
#

So it's possible that through no action of the user, it could wake it, keep it on, and cause screen burn? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

hushed basalt
#

Yep

deft pewter
#

But we're still claiming the users are idiots? Riiiiight.

#

It's poor design, however you try to spin it.

forest edge
hushed basalt
#

It would stay on forever

forest edge
#

you are using "if it can do this" then it must be bad

hushed basalt
#

If you go on vacation for 2 months and don't switch off at the wall, and a random glitch turns it on

#

It'll stay on forever

#

Hell I think even power cycle will turn it on

#

Let me check

forest edge
#

so plug it into the tv, not wall outlet

#

hell ancient tv's have a usb port

hushed basalt
#

Lol that's not a thing anymore

#

You can't run a chromecast off a sketchy 500ma tv usb

forest edge
#

um

#

yes you can

#

lol

deft pewter
#

Yeah, been a while since I've had a stick that runs off USB power. Most Fire TV generations need mains power.

forest edge
#

not entirly sure what mine outputs but the tv is like 2006 lol

hushed basalt
#

It will be 500ma

#

And it's roulette to try and power something off usb

subtle pasture
#

Heh, some of them will attempt to run off of HDMI power, if the HDMI port provides enough

forest edge
#

so your refusal to utilize or purchase an adequate tv to get lazy ass features off a 35 buck device is somehow bad design lol

hushed basalt
#

My chromecast has a 1A power supply

#

It's not about features

#

But data usb2 ports are limited to 500ma by specification

forest edge
#

this is the first i heard someone bring this up as if common sense cannot be be blamed lol

hushed basalt
#

Usb 3.0 is 900ma irrc

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, USB 2.0 ports are limited to 100mA until negotiation takes place, then 500mA after

forest edge
#

my chromcast runs off the tv usb port just fine and has all this time

#

hell i go roku running off the tv usb port

hushed basalt
#

Anyway it's not really relevant, as being plugged into usb could still turn itself on and stay on forever

deft pewter
#

Still all comes down to the fact that stick can keep the screen on forever.

forest edge
#

could also ransomware your pc i suppose as well

subtle pasture
#

plugs Chromecast into HDMI port, it powers up with no USB connection at all

hushed basalt
#

All google has to do is push an update

subtle pasture
#

Gotta love when the HDMI port provides more than the 50 mA in the HDMI specification...

hushed basalt
#

No media playing, turn off hdmi in 15 minutes

forest edge
#

google would laugh at this convo

hushed basalt
#

Then you're talking about an enormous amount of power saved globally

#

It doesn't matter if I as an individual turn my tv off or not

#

It's the collective behaviour that changes things

storm summit
#

err ..whats the best alternative to plex?

deft pewter
#

Plex

forest edge
#

your first mistake was thinking they care about such a thing on a practically throw away device

storm summit
#

๐Ÿ˜ฆ

forest edge
deft pewter
#

Don't listen to him, he's wrong about everything.

storm summit
#

@forest edge whats your top recommendation?

deft pewter
#

Sheep

forest edge
#

just use kodi

deft pewter
#

๐Ÿคข

subtle pasture
#

@storm summit Plex is pretty hard to replace as a backend. You can run Kodi with the official Plex plugin to use Kodi as your frontend media player for Plex.

hushed basalt
#

Google should care since they are happy to brag about how green their DCs are

storm summit
#

I'm just trying to find better ways to play 4k content ...if any

hushed basalt
#

What's the actual problem you're having with Plex bbrendon

#

You should be able to play it fine

subtle pasture
#

What issues are you having with 4k content?

forest edge
hushed basalt
#

No it's not

storm summit
#

i just got a 4k tv and realized i can't share 4k content because of transcoding.

hushed basalt
#

It's regulated

forest edge
#

how not

hushed basalt
#

That's what regulations are for

forest edge
#

must be some au thing

storm summit
#

and i haven't yet figured out what 4k encoding i need

subtle pasture
#

@storm summit Well, if the TV can't play the format natively, then transcoding is going to be required... Plex does have the option to (offline) transcode and save alternative versions so that real-time transcoding isn't required later

#

Takes up some space, though

deft pewter
#

We need someone in this channel that knows about transcoding and media formats. ๐Ÿค”

#

Know anyone, Leapo?

subtle pasture
#

lol

forest edge
#

there isn't any

deft pewter
#

h.265 allll the shit

storm summit
#

@subtle pasture how do i figure out what my tv/speakers support ?

hushed basalt
#

You could get a nvidia shield

#

Or an apple tv 4k if that's your thing

storm summit
#

yea. i saw that was listed as a common solution.

forest edge
#

what about ember? is that still an alternative?

subtle pasture
#

Hold up, going into a meeting with my boss. I'm still technically at work ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

i never used it but read alot like it

hushed basalt
#

Basically plex can near enough output anything

#

But your clients decide what they can support

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Changing players isn't going to help if the TV can't decode the codec. lol

deft pewter
#

I've been using Plex + Fire TV stick for a long time and don't remember any trouble with live transcoding.

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture meant as backend

subtle pasture
#

Ah

forest edge
#

kodi as frontend = always

storm summit
#

i have samsung 2020 tv + sonos soundbar 5.1 .

#

suing the plex app in the tv.

hushed basalt
#

Samsung aren't known for their great software tbh

#

I'd just search the plex forums for the best device to suit your needs

subtle pasture
hushed basalt
#

Transcoding is something you want to avoid as much as possible

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture same is said with plex.. whats your point? lol

subtle pasture
#

I think the two solutions here are "let Plex's "alternate versions" feature handle it (it'll create a pre-transcoded copy that's ready to direct-play on the TV), or beef up the server ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

Plus if you get a device with great 4k upscaling

forest edge
#

yea don't transcode.. it's for wieners

hushed basalt
#

You can just stick to 1080p content for 90% of the quality

#

I don't bother with 4k anymore I don't notice the difference over upscaled 1080

forest edge
#

if you want to transcode stuff, get netflix

hushed basalt
#

Well non real time conversion will always be far superior to real time transcoding

#

So Netflix etc will always have an advantage there

storm summit
#

plex doesnt re-encode in 4k.

#

1080p is the limit.

forest edge
#

you know if everything you rip is mp4 you will likely be able to play it on most crap these days natively lol

subtle pasture
#

mp4 has nothing to do with the codec...

#

mp4 is just the container, it can contain pretty much any audio/video stream

forest edge
#

don't get atmos lol

subtle pasture
#

You can plop an h.265 video with FLAC audio into an MP4 and it won't direct-play on anything

forest edge
#

aac/ac3 and mp3 are pretty well supported as is

#

flac is flash audio

subtle pasture
#

FLAC is lossless audio...

hushed basalt
#

Fooly Cooly

subtle pasture
#

FLAC competes directly with WMA and AAC lossless formats

hushed basalt
#

Furi Kuri?

forest edge
#

the part that cracks me up is people trying to get premo results while going cheapo routes

subtle pasture
#

I mean, in theory, you can have a cheap NAS and a cheap TV, but your endpoints better all be the latest-and-greatest (new Nvidia shield is a good option) so they can direct-play everything...

forest edge
#

there is no reason to even need plex or kodi for as long as you put the work into converting everything what can play on what you need it to

#

aside from fancy ui's and what not

#

hell my samsung plays all kinds of shit natively with it's own built in media library organizer etc

#

not that i would use it.. just saying

subtle pasture
#

Personally, I'm looking at tossing a GTX 1660 into my Plex server for real-time transcoding. lol

#

It has that shiny new NVENC encoding unit with all the new quality enhancements ๐Ÿ‘€

#

I really wish Nvidia would release a lower-end card with that NVENC unit onboard...

forest edge
#

why not a 3090 lol

subtle pasture
#

Because it has the same encoding unit as a 1660

#

So no point if all it's going to do is video transcoding

hoary lodge
#

I've used my plex box as music library for a few years now, only recently started using it for movies too lol.

3rd gen intel quicksync is honestly dreadful, thinking of getting a 1050 for transcoding

subtle pasture
#

A 1050 will work for h.264, but not h.265

#

Anything using the newer codec will fall right back to CPU transcoding

#

Also, the picture quality will be better with a 1660, as it supports more codec features

storm summit
#

looks like i need content in this format. hmm.

subtle pasture
#

Oof, the TV can't even handle DTS-HD without transcoding?

#

Usually TVs have, at the very least, a decent set of audio codecs...

storm summit
#

i think its because of the sonos ?

#

maybe?

subtle pasture
#

HDR10 HEVC (h.265) I can understand, that's very new...

storm summit
#

is the great thing about the shield that it will direct play almost anytihng ?

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

1060 has the same issue as the 1050. Older NVENC unit

#

The GTX 1660 is based on the same GPU as the RTX 20 series, with raytracing disabled.

forest edge
#

whats the diffrence between the nvenc

#

the older vs newer i mean

subtle pasture
#

The GTX 10 series doesn't support h.265 encoding, and the quality of its h.264 encoding is inferior to the GTX16 / RTX20 / RTX30 series.

#

Hang on, there's a table with all the NVENC versions in it...

forest edge
#

it does support h265

subtle pasture
#

The 10 series?

forest edge
#

not sure where you are getting this info lol

#

yes, lists it on the nvidia site

storm summit
#

someone online says delete this file : /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles/Samsung SmartTV.xml

#

hahah. sounds like fun

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Encode or decode? lol

#

They support decoding more formats than they support encoding

forest edge
#

both

#

if the card has a nvenc engine it can do everything the newer ones can

#

which is why i am curious where this "inferior" statement came from lol

forest edge
#

inferior cause it's older i guess?

subtle pasture
#

Inferior because it produces poorer picture quality

forest edge
#

where do you see this

subtle pasture
#

Turing GPUs also ship with an enhanced NVENC encoder unit that adds support for H.265 (HEVC) 8K encode at 30 fps. The new NVENC encoder provides up to 25% bitrate savings for HEVC and up to 15% bitrate savings for H.264.

#

It's in the whitepaper man...

forest edge
#

i just did a bunch of looking crapm up cause i plan to use mine for camera feeds and not once ran across this stuff your saying lol

#

thats 8k

deft pewter
#

So the whitepaper must be wrong.

subtle pasture
#

Literally linked the whitepaper for the architecture from Nvidia's site, and quoted it...

#

I can only do so much ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

forest edge
#

ok so you need 8k?

deft pewter
#

Leapo - an old adage comes to mind here. Something about being brought down to their level and beaten with experience ๐Ÿคฃ

subtle pasture
#

Also:

Turingโ€™s new NVDEC decoder has been updated to support decoding of HEVC 4:4:4 8/10/12-bit video streams, and it also supports VP9 10/12-bit HDR similar to Pascal GP102/107/108 and Volta GV100 GPUs
So it can also decode more formats than the previous-gen GPUs

#

Which means you won't be stuck with CPU decode + GPU encode on more formats ๐Ÿ˜„

green inlet
#

So, are all you plex fan boys running on the shield pro? I donโ€™t understand the nvidia shield. Is it just like and Apple TV or roku or any of the other media players

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge I am surprised. How come you are seeing all this HQ video on CRT 21"?

hoary lodge
#

how much camera feeds you encoding? if it's 4 or less you can probably get away with using the cpu, if you don't mind larger filesizes

deft pewter
#

Camera? Just movies.

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge You missed the part about the bitrate savings... that means same quality with less bitrate, or higher quality at the same bitrate. That's regardless of 8k resolutions.

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze as a audiophilia you should respect quality

deft pewter
#

pd - Fire TV stick here. Cheap and cheerful, no issues with streaming 1080p around the house. No 4k TV yet, so haven't tried doing 4k from Plex.

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture glad the written nis enough for you cause every review shows no diffrence lol

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge I do, really, I do.

green inlet
#

You run plex on a fire stick?

deft pewter
#

Plex Media Server is on my PC, Fire Stick is the client.

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Link to a review that shows no difference in video quality?

green inlet
#

I guess I need to figure out plex. I thought it was just like video storage

forest edge
#

youtube it.. as i said.. i just spent a bunch fo time looking at this crap cause i plan to use mine for my cameras lol

deft pewter
#

Part of it is storage. But it does DLNA and stuff to make it easy to serve up content to other devices.

subtle pasture
#

No, you said you saw it, link me...

#

Come on man...

deft pewter
#

And it transcodes... which is what this idiotic conversation is about ๐Ÿ˜„

subtle pasture
#

I dug up a goddamn whitepaper

forest edge
#

no, purchase based ona flyer

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge time to show the pudding ๐Ÿ˜‹

deft pewter
#

There's no pudding ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

green inlet
#

So plex on a nvidia shield would be a good thing?

deft pewter
#

Leapo found good pudding.

forest edge
#

leapo found a flyer

deft pewter
#

Shield as a client, sure. You'd still run Plex Media Server on a real machine.

forest edge
#

if i had photoshop installed on this pc i'd make you another lol

tidal bronze
#

Lol

subtle pasture
#

Aight, lost cause, got it...

green inlet
#

Auh...ok, I got excited when I saw the nvidia shield pro had plex

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, the Shield supports being a Plex Media Server

forest edge
#

@subtle pasture if it makes you feel any better i would go with a 1660 over a 1060 just cause it's newer regardless lol

subtle pasture
#

But most people don't run it that way

hoary lodge
#

what plex clients do you guys use?

I'm probably the only one using a potato here lol... Celeron 1007u (elementary linux, plex media player)

forest edge
#

but i have a 1060 and don't plan to buy another card for my cameras so i dug into this crap

#

even tried to use my old 750ti lol

tidal bronze
#

What cameras?

green inlet
#

@subtle pasture , why not?

forest edge
#

all my cheapos lol

tidal bronze
#

Oh I thought you are doing a wildlife documentary or something along those lines. Now it all makes sense.

deft pewter
#

A little while ago, Sonoma was ridiculing people for buying cheap...

forest edge
#

i got a wildlife documentary here for ya

green inlet
#

Sheep, barn, gig internet, doesnโ€™t count as sex trafficking

tidal bronze

I know hou do buddy @forest edge

forest edge
subtle pasture
forest edge
subtle pasture

Some editions of the 1650 have the 7th gen NVENC, some don't...

green inlet

The 1660 is the first card where ALL editions have 7th gen.

deft pewter
#

Like... eggs, meat, veg were all okay. But all of a sudden everyone wanted to be Mary Berry.

#

Hmm. We don't eat out as much as Americans. I think a big part of that culture in America is that dining out is relatively cheap compared to groceries.

#

In the UK, groceries are cheap. I can buy a week's worth of supplies for about the same as a half-decent 3-course meal. I wouldn't eat out more than once a week.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, we dine out perhaps, 5 times a year

deft pewter

Once a week is about my average. Or was...

"How many light bulbs do I have" hasn't exactly been the most pressing question lol

clever mortar
#

We have quite a few downlighters - we prefer those to a single central light

#

When we got the last house rewired we had the lights in the hall replaced with downlighters. With low output bulbs it created a much more pleasant, even, illumination than one off-centre thing

Wow, 41

Plus three shop lights

That was a much higher number than I realized it would be

I would have a similar number to atx, around the house, pointing down to illuminate for cameras

Lots of weak lights as to give even light

@clear ferry what are your thoughts on something like this

#

It's about 40% of the cost of a new 48port poe/sfp+/qsfp+ mikrotik

#

But obviously it doesn't include the SFP+ modules, I'm not too fussed about QSFP+.

#

But I'm guessing getting a used sfp+ module will cost more than the switch?

My Pi just arrived, and setup was really shockingly easy. I'm very impressed with this project - my thanks to those of you who work on it! Unexpectedly, it automatically detected my Mysa thermostats - I must have read out of date info, I didn't think it was compatible! It worked through the HomeKit integration, which while cloud-based is better than nothing. I'll take it until they make a local API.

@clear ferry part of me thinks I should just buy a new miktrotik 24 port non-poe switch to start with, then get another 24-port poe when I need it. Then just use 2 SFP+ ports to stack them

inner vault
#

anyone have 2fa working with wireguard? Is that possible without an external service?

clear ferry
#

not sure what I would use 2fa for on wireguard, if someone managed to write down my key and secret I have bigger issues right now

#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

I might need to look into that, if it could do yubikey that would be sweet

inner vault
#

do you put them in each time you connect with wireguard or are they saved somewhere?

clear ferry
#

they are saved in the client (for android) and in the config file (for linux)

inner vault
#

right, so if someone got those devices while they weren't connected to wireguard, they'd be able to connect to the rest of your network

clear ferry
#

my laptops are both login via yubikey, so that would assume someone has my yubikey and pin, the other end is my opnsense firewall, so that would assume someone is already on the inside of my network and has compromised that, and my phone is only unlockable via biometrics, so that assumes someone has cut off my thumb

dull chasm
#

Can be arranged

inner vault
#

I mean, or someone yanked it out of your hand or off a table at a conference or something...

#

while unlocked

clear ferry
#

You assume I ever get out amongst people

#

๐Ÿคฃ

inner vault
#

it is a narrow threat mode, but yeah, I'm looking to replace openvpn, but we've got 2fa requirements

clear ferry
#

well yes, but that is a so extreme scenario that is more likely that I leave the phone unlocked in a bathroom stall

#

and that isn't very likely

inner vault
#

we only use wireguard for ssh, because we basically enforce 2fa ssh because all our ssh keys are gpg subkeys on hardware tokens

clear ferry
#

so you should be using yubikeys tbh

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

inner vault
#

yeah, yubikeys, or nitrokeys, whatever

deft pewter
#

You're missing the most important rule of security. Once they have physical access to a device, it's compromised. They don't need atx's thumb.

inner vault
#

requirement is gpg subkey on a hardware token, whatever the token is is your choice

clear ferry
#

they can take it

inner vault
#

if you want to use a card and card reader, that's cool too

clear ferry
inner vault
#

it lets us do neat stuff like passwordless sudo that checks to see if your token is plugged in via ssh-agent

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

I do that for a lot of different customers

inner vault
#

it also means that we don't need to trust whatever ssh pubkey someone gets us, because, assuming we trust the gpg key, we can just grab the pubkey from their auth key ourself.

#

it does make onboarding a pain in the ass though
