And opn does?
And what would you do with such an integration?
I am not interested in displaying a lot of useless statistics, but using as presence detection for certain ip addresses could be very useful
Was using the tp link integration until I broke it, so not used it for ages
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/opnsense/
Currently only device tracking
But that could expand!
I have some ideas for it π
Okay well that is fantastic
I would like to see a possible integrstion if using nut server to pull statistics from a UPS
Might be able to do that via smtp into opnsense though
I only have USB into the router
So no network card in the UPS
There are some guides for NUT for OPNsense on their forum
Yeah, I need to do some research, I realise that
I have a current setup that I am migrating atm, a long process
they've been overrun by enterprise and greed, so they favour very stale update cycles and no fun
I have used it for maybe a year and a half, been very happy, but thr community is a lot bigger for pfsense,
I guess I am staying opn then
mostly any guide for pfsense will work on opnsense
just the fact that they have wireguard native is enough for me, nothing wrong with pfsense, they just don't do fun stuff anymore, and if stuff isn't fun
we throw it away
Aha! I have only played with openvpn, no other form of vpn or such
I wanted a way in, to my camera server, thinking I might go stunnel though for that
I pull NUT statistics from freebsd and raspberry pi , NUT is NUT, so it will probably pull it fine from opnsense too
I ran OpenVPN site2site for 10 years, great stuff for that, for road warrior wireguard makes at lot more sense
It is just a fun thing, if I can't get it to work, no biggie. I was just interested in power draw, but it will be fairly linear
Road warrior, as in connecting back to your server at home whilst traveling?
Not site a to site b
Yeah, road warrior == mobile phone \ laptop on the go, from anywhere
We don't say najs at all π€£
Yeah, it's only a 1200 and 2200VA unit
Oof, and a single AA battery, it seems
I got a 1000VA/800W APC, seems good
Yeah :P
Thanks for the insight anyway
Need to update the ipmi and bios on it. Swap battery, swap psu and hsf
I was wondering about the load on my garage ups, it was spiky, but then I remembered I have my 3d printer attached to it
Gonna run the 340W platinum psu. I have nothing smaller
but it is good not to have to throw away a 32 hour print...
Looks like an ekg. Is your 3d printer alive?
I was quite impressed with that actually
The realtime consumption meter with tibber is amazing tbh
Ffs... I had to root my device and disable system properties just to get notifications working on Xiaomi π«
On xiaomi what ?
Redmi note 9 MIUI 12 (xiaomi.eu rom now)
MIUI optimizes a lot off stuff in the background. Had to disable the optimizations to solve delay issues
Apt update first
π©
Oh it's home assistant os
How can i install bluetooth library
ask in #330990055533576204
we don't do support here
@dull belfry quite visibile with the ssh and web terminal π
we don't do stuff like that in #551864459891703809 or #449717345808547842
@clear ferry tibber? Is that your electric companies api or do you have a clamp meter type thibg?
I have an ikea display atm, sparnΓ€s but it is just a display
And another question (point me to another channel if needed), how do you all monitor battery device battery level (say phones and tablets etc) ha app? Or something else?
I have heard another app mentioned but can't remember the name for the life of me
Ty!
Okay, companion app looks amazing
I'm struggling to cast lovelace to google nest
I'm drinking coffee
I could answer that, but tikerer might ban me
Because coffee is the superior beverage.
Superior on the inferior scale
I like how coffee smells, before it gets wet. But that is about it
What about eating coffee? I don't have them often (only when I'm somewhere with Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe type places) but chocolate coated coffee beans are delicious.
I always eat too many at once and getting a little too excitable though π€£
I mean I do drink instant cofee
Not tried eating it though
I have maybe 1 cup every 3 months ish
More espresso, less depresso
Well you're bound to be depressed without espressos
π
I've never understood Irish coffees. I love coffee, I love alcohol... but both in the same glass?
And I know it's not as extreme as mixing alcohol with prescription drugs... but you're still taking a stimulant and a depressant at the same time π€¦ββοΈ
Hmm... never thought of that before π Makes sense
You can even mess up with herbal remedies...
Combining St. Johnβs wort and certain antidepressants can lead to a potentially life-threatening increase in your bodyβs levels of serotonin, a chemical produced by nerve cells.
@last cedar my power company yes
They swap between power companies based on who is the cheapest at a given time
Saves me 30-70% yoy
@clear ferry but it is smart meter based and via api right?
They were talking about 2025 when meters were going api based (or possible to api) in Sweden
All norwegian meters have a smart HAN plug
And power companies have to give the consumer access
I paid NOK500 for a premade plug that does that for me
So that's like... Β£3.50?
Β£40 ish
Would the Raspberry pi 3 b be powerful enough to run home assistant?
Not a problem for a core installation but it depends on how many add-ons you want to run abs how many devices you connect
I have a B+ also but it has currently been tasked with emulation π
@hushed otter βοΈ
abs?
And
Ah sorry π
On my phone....
Billions in machine learning but can't tell when I'm talking about filament vs using the particle and
lol
Pi π€’
@clear ferry ty
Thank you for the response, I guess the best way to find out would be to use it and see.
It will work
In my experience though, once you get to 50+ devices OR more than 3/4 intensive add-ons you would want to look at upgrading
Or if you just enable plex, lol
I was thinking that.
Yeah, watercool and overclocked pi
Yikes
π€’
Dual power and reliable storage would be a minimum from me
For a HA box?
The first can be passed if it atleast has reliable power
If it's going to run my whole house, yeah, it's gotta be 24/7 redundant
Oh, you were thinking like that, for a whole house.
A SoC will never deliver that tbh
I think solar panels and batteries would be my choice, as things look right now, if I needed that
And a generator for longer outages
If power is gone there is no use in making it smart anyway
On a completely unrelated note. What do any of you think about a product/service that would cost say one-time $15 to be able to run a personal version of tuya cloud that would integrate into HA and other hubs or standalone windows/Linux service to use any tuya device without cloud and China server requirements
I personally would go with a non cloud product, over a cloud product with a hack
Or flash the device with tasmota by breaking it open
Cool, thanks for the feedback.
Cloud π€’
Love your avatar btw Philip, final fantasy?
This wouldn't be a hack. An actual tuya personal cloud
But nothing to do with tuya or their servers
FF8?
FF1
Looks like vivi from 9, but low res :P
Those comments make me feel old, lol
Age is just a number
Sometimes a very large number
Well, I would still personally prefer local only
I purposely don't buy cloud products or services
I don't really feel good with cloud based stuff. But I think most normal people want convenience, most people here want stuff to do as much as possible and don't mind getting their hands dirty (generally)
Reason I ask is that, for extreme users only purchasing local only products or reflashing firmware isn't an issue. But they're is a market I believe for beginner to intermediate users that don't want to do that kind of stuff but still want the control of not sending anything to the cloud at all
$15 would be too steep anyway, heck $5 would be to steep for such a service
So the idea is to buy something cloud-based and then pay someone else even more money to not have it talk to the cloud? π€
Better to buy something local in the first place.
ooh f.me

ah thank you sir
We have at work too. They give a good picture
well supervised is docker'd and does'nt run under a UID π€·ββοΈ

mhmm.. but I could do a 2770 π€
@hearty depot podman
Gen 4 what?
@brisk glen when supervised with addons?
Generation 4 as in 4th i believe
but.. I could run docker in podman and therfore run HA supervised in podman π€£
@deft pewter "All-new Echo (4th generation) | With premium sound, smart home hub and Alexa"
I know what Gen 4 meant. You didn't specify the product π
Alexa isn't that great, tbh, but I don't like voice assistants much.
And since it has Zigbee " Echo combines premium sound, a built-in Zigbee smart home hub "
I prefer the Google Home over the Amazon Echo.
Really?
'premium sound'... in something that small? LOL
They're okay for a small speaker. They're not premium. My 18 year old cheapo home cinema kit is better.
Premium sound for something that small :P
I had one of the old goolge voice things hated the whole
"Okay google"
"Google.. okay google!"
if i can say "Alexa turn on/off lights" I'll be happy
If I can have my lights go on/off without talking, I'll be happier π
π¦
If you like them, go for it.
am i allowed to like them?
Nope
Just don't get your hopes up too much. A speaker that small will always sound tinny. You simply can't get mids/lows from something with small speaker cones.
That's how it should be π
Yeah but with automation/buttons
Nopes
don't you just ever have a change of preference
Well automations are kinda the whole point of home automation.
Yeah i know
Automations yes, buttons no :P
Open a door, light comes on. Go out for too long, light goes off.
I've got lights that dim at specific times
What's this talking about?
but don't you sometimes want them to dim a little later
No, never
Well why doesn't your setup know that? π
thast what input booleans are for
If my lights dim at 1915 I will just have to fumblr around in the dark
That is how it is
@shy comet hey hey. Long time. How are things?
(@mono speaking of premium speakers (not to derail) but I JUST got my Tekton center channel last night. )
@shy comet already started ?
tonight 10pm
Oh nice.
Just looked up Tekton. Those things aren't cheap π€£
Tons of smoking to do no need to go out. @shy comet
hahahah
@calm crow don't listen to these bitter, jaded IoT fogies ;) do what works for you
I'm going to swap out my crappy old home cinema kit with a fairly low-end pair of bookshelf speakers soon. I want the desk space back.
just in time for black friday to buy some video games and be stuck at home
poor all of us lol
Lol
No Donka. Don't advocate for the button lover π
i'll just socialise with my alexa like a normal person
Hmm. I'm realizing you might not have been the one I was talking to about Tektons recently :P
Put a pair of Edifier on my Christmas list. If I don't get bought those, I might spend a little extra for AudioEngine.
@shy comet starting with some beef ribs.
Nah, it wasn't me π I remember the big conversation about speakers though.
Circadian lighting 4 lyfe
@tidal bronze uncooked?
And the pics of all the dressed walls.

@tidal bronze making them yourself or getting them from somewhere?
@shy comet
Omg don't show atx
i ordered yamatos last night and postmates thinks its ok that they double price at the last minute bastards
I have 4 echos. They provide half of my house functionality. The other half is the "pure" automation style.
Atx will be mad that you are cooking them
@shy comet now I pickup. Delivery times are nuts.
yea i think i need to start doing that too
@last cedar this is good old California no raw meat here.

Nice.
@tidal bronze whats the name of the butcher? may need to check them out
@vital fjord i think up north has curfew too right?

Curfews π
Eh. Anything helps
true
@shy comet I agree.
Nirvana fallacy and all that
Where the god damn mask. Simple as that.
IMO masks should not be a substitute for social distancing
And also distance + common sense
@last cedar did you guys get curfews yet?
Sort of
Too many people think mask == all you need
No alcohol serving after 2200
Gotta get on a flight tomorrow, going to be interesting
Oof
They are thinking about it in Oslo, but that just means I'll be working from home 5 days a week instead of 4
I wear one, and gloves at customers (mainly schools atm)
yea gotta have a box of gloves in the car
But I realise it is about as effective as a chocolate fireguard, because no one else wears masks
I do mask when I go shopping, but that is the only I'm out of the house except for a locked down customer office where we just do private offices
I came across a dude without a mask today at the pet groomer had to unload.
Inspecting all trash cans?
π€£
Oh, you're a valve expert?
First Julmust of the year!
When's HL3 coming out?
Business is slow atm
Yeah
You know all these cars with huge exhausts
I usually climb in and steal the valves
@low harness what on earth is that ?
I have a kind of hard time explaining it...
Berry flavoured soft drink?
Julmust (Swedish: jul "yule" and must English: 'must' "not-yet-fermented juice of fruit or berries", though there is no such juice in julmust) is a soft drink that is mainly consumed in Sweden around Christmas. During the rest of the year, except Easter, it is usually quite difficult to find in stores, but sometimes it is sold at other times of ...
100% serious though, I need a racoon pet
Oh, no berries in the must.
Taste like no berry I ever ate.
@last cedar look to your left
Julmust is awesome
Oh, there's a racoon!
I want a rotund racoon that does forward rolls
So Wikipedia says it tastes a bit like root beer. Is that right?
Root beer oof.
Mmm, sounds like something I'd enjoy. Who wants to ship me a case?
Depends which liquids π€£
Not as sweet? I usually avoid must because it's too sweet.
You are meant to screw the top on
It isn't as sweet as root beer IMO
There is also pΓ₯skmust
PΓ₯sk is easter in Swedish
Why can't you be normal and call it Ostara like everyone else?
a bit offtopic , but i'm looking for some nice devices to automate my home , cheap and good .
That is weird
#hardware-archived, you say? #automations-archived, you say?
You already posted your super vague question over in #automations-archived, don't bring it in here.
The forums have tons of ideas.
There's also a stack of existing threads, so you can just go and read those first π
that's true lol
π
@deft pewter still loving my alexa dot.
welp its wired up to a Behringer Ms40 π
I'm sure they sound great when connected to real speakers, yeah
Behringer made some good studio equipment in days of yore
But I've never touched any audio stuff
@shy comet it's about that time
got a dual core 2.7 with 4GB of ram machine someone gave me, I slapped a 750Ti card in it and been screwing around seeing if this thing could handle motioneye. I dumped 3 camera feeds on this thing and only two of them are doing motion, using the nvenc h264 to offload some of the load on the gpu and this thing struggles
I mean it's doing it, but it struggles yet my rpi4 handle 2 more feeds than this all with motion detection on with no issue all while running HA..
@forest edge Did you remember to use the hacked drivers that allow unlimited transcode streams on GeForce GPUs?
GeForce cards are artificially limited to two transcode streams, Nvidia usually only allows Quadro cards to have access to "as many streams as the hardware can actually handle"
Your 3rd camera isn't using the GPU, if you aren't
anti-HA question ... using a Sonoff out of the box, can I use their app (ewelink?) from outside my home?
is that limitation still a thing in 2020? that was like back in 2018 wasn't it?
Upped to 3 in 2020 it seems
Or just do the hack and have unlimited
NVIDIA has reportedly increased the concurrent sessions limit of its NVENC hardware video encoder on GeForce graphics cards to 3, up from 2. This means up to three different apps could use NVENC simultaneously, or an app (such as Premiere Pro) could use up to three sessions of NVENC for faster live ...
Nvidia NVENC is a feature in Nvidia graphics cards that performs video encoding, offloading this compute-intensive task from the CPU to the GPU. It was introduced with the Kepler-based GeForce 600 series in March 2012.The encoder is supported in many streaming and recording programs, such as Wirecast, Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) and Bandicam...
They are being really kind recently
3 streams
No error 43 on the 3000 series
It is almost like they want to be nice to people
Almost
well 3, i have 3 feeds going to it atm so that shouldn't be the issue
I think the rpi's media encoder/decoder chip is just far superior lol
π€’
ah, garage vacuumed
perfect
also, now got @deft pewter new integration to run my presence cube
What does the finished product look like?
That's cool, I like it.
SHOULD I MAKE YOU ONE?
So you're using it as a studio warning light?
No thanks π I got my pot noodle lid already.
Nah, my wife has it in her office, so she knows if I'm in calls or not
So... a studio warning light
π
where is the best channel to bug people about influxdb?
If it is the #integrations-archived sure, or if it isn't probably #general-archived
time to backup before update
unifi dream machine, the white ball version, what do people think about it? Love/hate?
When you ask the homelabbers, they hate unify/ubiquiti hardware. Personaly I'm ok with it but the dream machine is to much app, UI and sparkles for my taste.
@deft pewter maybe I should use the teams integration component to tell the neighbors if I'm wanking in a meeting via the Christmas lights π₯³
Do it π
I'll write you a Pornhub integration next if you want π
If anyone asks why it's important from a home automation perspective... well that's obvious. It's to turn off all your remote speakers in other rooms when you start streaming π€£
(or turn them up if you're that kinda person)

@clear ferry You see Nvidia figured out AMD's "Smart Access Memory" tech already?
Turns out, Nvidia has been doing exactly the same thing on Quadro cards for years. They're going to enable it on GeForce cards too.
Does that mean my 2000 series gets an upgrade at some point?
is there a link to the 64x64 panels he used?
Compre FΓ‘cil, Viva Melhor! Aliexpress.com
A few seconds of searching. First result for 'led panel'.
@deft pewter They only explicitly mentioned the 3000 series, but there's no reason they couldn't also enable it for 2000 series cards
If it's just a driver thing, I hope so
Eh, I've been an ATI guy since 98
Nvidia has already said it's going to support AMD + Intel + PCIe 3.0 and up
So no hardware lock-in like the AMD version, which requires a 5000 series CPU in a brand-new AMD motherboard with a brand-new AMD card
still pissed off by ati for their macbook fuckup
Strictly speaking, the feature they're using to increase performance was available on PCIe 2.0, but it was "optional"
found it in the youtube comments
Smarter Shopping, Better Living! Aliexpress.com
damn. shipping is crazy expensive now.
depend on the seller
and thats free shipping!
Found it. Smart Access Memory should work on any motherboard that has the "above 4g decoding" option for PCIe in its BIOS
Any bets on how long before AMD kills the hardware lock-in?
never, but I also have no clue what youre taliking about π
Thourght nvidia where the ppl who didnt allowed user to use features
Nvidia used to love their hardware lock-in back when they sold chipsets
"Oh, you want SLI? Better buy an Nvidia chipset to make that work"
I have some grid cards that became paperweights when the customer upgrades to vsphere7
I should take those and use them for transcoding
Wait, do GRID cards even have NVENC support?
That said, you kinda want an Ampere card for transcoding, because the quality they can provide is significantly better than older transcode units
So a GTX 1660 or higher
Kepler? Old boy
@storm summit best thing I found so far for the cable
That's a GeForce 780 equivalent, so h.264 quality is going to be pretty meh, and there's no h.265 support at all.
Also , it's possible to convert a GTX 780 / 780 Ti / Titan into a pseudo-quadro by soldering on a single resistor to the back of the board.
Which kinda devalues the Quadro's of that generation.
π
Ok, one resistor and a BIOS flash. Still not difficult
Unlimited NVENC streams with no hacked drivers
Heh, just heard about RTX I/O. That's interesting... allows the GPU to access PCIe storage devices directly (rather than through the CPU / OS / drivers / other abstractions)
I'm curious how much that helps performance and load times
That's the thing amd was talking about? Infinity cache or something like that
@orchid rose Infinity cache is just a large chunk of on-die cache on RDNA2 GPUs
RTX I/O is similar to what modern game consoles are doing to accelerate load times (which is why Sony and Microsoft both made a big deal about the inclusion of a PCIe SSD on their new systems)
oh okay, thanks I'll read up
thats a nice gif template (LTT)

Just trying to figure out a goofy issue where my UI3 gets delayed
and it says "not enough CPU" but it's a crock of shit because it's on a monster of a system
and 10gbps wired connection. So it's not a bandwidth issue
I think I got it tweaked though and figured out... we'll see in about 30 minutes lmao

Copied from Apple π
Which means it wasn't Apple's idea and was copied from somewhere else first.
Apple never innovate. Apple just refine other people's ideas and market them better.
Is this just your opinion or you have a source to back it up?
Why on earth would I need a source? Apple are renowned for that strategy.
iPods... iPads... AirPods... Apple Watch...
All amazing products.
None of them were the first of their kind to market.
There's no denying that they create some well-polished products. They just don't innovate.
Harvard business review says differently
https://hbr.org/2020/11/how-apple-is-organized-for-innovation
I see a lot of corporate jargon and very few claims of innovation.
Wow. They added bokeh to their phones.
I think you are confusing creation and innovation
I don't see the difference here. Claiming that adding bokeh to a phone is hardly innovative. Both smartphones and bokeh existed before Apple put the two together.
It's cool though. I can see both sides. I'm happy to admit that Apple make great products. I'm just not a fanboy that can't see beyond their marketing π€·ββοΈ
I am using your example. They didnβt invent the MP3 player but who remembers any MP3 player before the iPod
I'm sure plenty of us old folk remember the great range of devices Creative made back in the day.
I'm done here. You can try the whole 'Apple did it first' if you want, doesn't make it true.
I'm bothered by the fact that my IP camera is working great with the app but not with rtsp streams or whatever
I went a little digging and found some interesting info but don't know what the next step is π
Did some sniffing and found an rtsp link but it's not trough my camera
@deft pewter oh yea. didnt M$ make a zune that was an mp3 player?
@dull belfry if its rtsp VLC should work
Not sure whether I should share the rtsp link here
All the rtsp links are pointing to the cloud
yea. then probably obfuscate it
or we will send you emails saying " send 100 BTC or I will publish video of you in front of computer"
lol
yea. thats above my pay grade.
my god those metal hinge cat connectors are heavy freaking duty lol
I didn't even know cat8 was already out lol
residential 40gbps wire lol
You plug it into your 1gb switch and get internet att 200/200
We need more affordable 10gb switches tbh
And I don't just mean 1 or 2 ports
Cat8 seems like a bit of an audiophile thing
But for networks,
youtube videos show people doing speedtests before/after π
The reason 10gbe switching hasn't really taken off is that rj45 at 10gbe is just crap
And it can't be done reliably and cheaply
Compare the cost of a SFP+ Active optical cable versus the cost of 2 x RJ45 10GBASE-T SFP+s and a cable,
Or two SFP+ SR LC modules and a LC duplex cable vs the RJ45 equivalent
hmm
Wish we had more design control tbh
I had multiple MP3 players before the iPod π€£ heck, I've never had an iPod @deft pewter
Nah, I take pity
minidisc was the shit
One word is correct there atleast
@clear ferry you have a dahua camera, right?
I got an imou (same manufacturer) but different name. i notice that when I use the phone app or browser, the stream is great (it uses P2P connection),
Trying to find a way to make P2P work on dahua without the application
I already got the required values it uses to authenticate with the cloud
I have no apps, pure Poe camera with rtsp and webgui
I would use onvifer to see if you can see any onvif value you can use
I got all the required URLs like rtsp but it's all delayed unless I use the mobile app or webview on the camera
That sounds very strange, why would the device buffer it's local stream
It works great on the phone thanks to the cloud p2p
I'm trying to find a way to implement p2p on the camera itself
Cloud π€’
It's bs that I need the app to have a great stream
What does the rtsp URL look like? Is it a local address on your network?
And also means you are sharing any video with the internet probably
Block it in your firewall and scan it with onvifer
Do you think that if I don't use the cloud, it will be a great stream?
I might as well try
Try dealing with live streams for video production
multi-port routers/modems with the video joined back together by a remote service
Could you elaborate
Sorry it's not a suggestion,
Just an observation that it gets complicated when it's production grade,
But my camera streams also work great on the app
If only I could use the service without apps
My guess is they've just tuned the settings very well
So it would be trying to guess them
Uh. What's your aversion to running the onvif/rstp to an nvr like a normal person
I mean, that's almost always going to happen to a certain extent.
Not when using the app with cloud functionality
There's no possible way it's faster over the internet and back than locally
Physics doesn't work that way
What camera are you using?
It can be faster than rtsp to nvr if the default settings are crap
#cameras-archived is likely a good place for details, but ISTR that the frequency of i-frames can have a big impact
No u-frames !
I prefer an Ξ±-frame myself
lol just checked my ali spendings. around 1.5k in the last year π

I can buy garbage locally... it's cheaper from Ali π

With the benefit of hindsight, this was a naΓ―ve question: Alright clever IoT folks, I've got two of these garage door openers, what do you reckon the best way of connecting them with Apple HomeKit is? https://t.co/i0RmjSMkkD β Troy Hunt (@troyhunt) April 25, 2020 In

Hey guys - can anyone recommend a good smart lock that works with HA?
Was looking at Ring but it is locked down π¦
not a fan?
IoT is great for cool stuff, for security, I would never implement it
Same with indoor cameras
my two no-nos
same for me at home but I can see it being useful in some cases
Do you have an example ? π€£
For spaces that are used less often and/or by different people. So you can either check that everything is okay (cameras) or allow entry without a physical key (smart locks)
I would use a smartlock for my batcave
But I would love to see the state of my door in HA
state of the door can be done easily with a door sensor
if you mean the lock that can be done with a esp and a sensor I guess
@dry dagger , most people seem to prefer Schlage. I went with kwikset. I would highly suggest using zwave but anything further should be discussed in #hardware-archived
hi, anyone from Nabu Casa that can send me a message please?
(I am writing a blog post and wnat to cross check some things)
I don't know if any of them usually hang around in this channel, but I don't think Balloob himself would mind a DM or a ping.

@clear ferry I'm with you on smart locks. Nobody seems to make the product I actually want...
I want a smart lock where you can read the current state remotely, and lock it remotely, but not unlock it remotely... like I want it to be mechanically incapable of being unlocked by anything but a normal key
I don't object to remote unlock, but I'd want it to require physically being enabled
Then for the 99.999% of the time I don't need it, it couldn't work
I'm also a little surprised nobody has made add-ons for locks to just... read their state
The battery life on something like that would be extremely long compared to motorized smart locks
Or just a drop in lock mechanism that only read the state
Not with a motor
My wife would love that, she always wondered if she locked
Yeah, just being able to reassure yourself that your remembered the lock the door would be good enough for a lot of people
Lol, someone found a solution...
No deadbolts?
So they ratchet?
You mean of the lock, right?
There are various forms of "real" locks
With status for deadlock position
Or a sensor to say if the doors bolt is out (in the frame)
I'm finding a lot of DIY projects, but nothing commercial
That won't fit a normal front door. lol
It's just a deadbolt...
A handle and a deadbolt?
Yeah, separate handle and deadbolt
This is hard, not sure what all the terms are in English hehe
Must be a states side thing, we only use seperate when it is an extra lock (usually higher up)
So you'd need to monitor that mechanism ^
Yeah. It isn't a cheap solution but a motorised deadbolt would do
And connect it in such a way that the voltage feeding the lock is broken when the bolt is out
Unless all you want/need is monitoring, in which case a motorized deadbolt is overkill (and has poor battery life)
if only Wyze had an api
In which case you can lock it, but only unlock it by hand
then i would buy a wyze lock
That would be a cable, no battery (only as backup if mains fail)
A proper motorised deaddbolt solution should have a seperate box called a dac
A cable?
Yeah
You generally don't run cables into doors, actuating the door will eventually break the cable
I haven't seen a single motorized deadbolt that doesn't run on batteries exclusively
Stranded cable, and use a metal spiral channel to minimise wear
Yeah, that's a non-starter, lol
We have installs that wear out the lock after 10 years of heavy use. Honestly, vandalism is the only reason I ever swap a cable
There's no power run to the door (for obvious reasons)
Yeah, I get that :)
There are products that do what you want, but it gets very very involved
And fitting that into an existing door would require... a ton of drilling... and doesn't fill the pre-existing deadbolt hole
Yeah. We normally modify the hole in the door, and or matching frame.
Drill in from hinge side to meet the lock body
I think I will use those assa 580 locks in the door. Or a step 40 in the frame. Frame is less work though
This is a double-door. The lock goes into another door, not a frame
So.. there's another wrinkle. lol
You could just put a contact in the other door, a simple microswitch that closes when the bolt pushes on it (door is locked)
or a company could just make a deadbolt with an integrated zigbee contact sensor >_>
Still an involved installation though
Yeah, that too
How about a zigbee magnet contact on the door, and a strong magnet on the end of the deadbolt. Depending on the thickness of the door?
So when the bolt is out contact closes
I posted a photo from someone else above who did just that
Oh, will have a look
Oh, yeah, nice
You could maybe drill the hole a little deeper and hide it in the door
But yeah, the majority of our installs are either done by pulling the status of the bolt from the lock
Or by pulling the status of the bolt from the frame
I don't think I could ever trust a raccoon for electrical advice.
A lot of the electric "slutbleck" have a contact for the bolt to press against
Wow, talk about stereotypes
That is very mean
It don't matter if you're black and white.
well same for lizards then?
You have real locks at least
Oh nice

I'm just gonna chime in and say my schlague zwave dead bolts have fantastic battery life
mine go well over a year on 4 AA batteries
and on top of that i have 2 weeks or longer of low battery notifications before they are dead dead
I think I went through the initial set pretty quickly, but replaced with the li-ion AA and they've probably been going a year now.
I like the schlage locks as well
Quick note about lithium ion AAs: You won't get nearly as much warning before they die
The voltage doesn't slowly decrease over time like it does on a regular AA battery, it stays relatively flat, then falls off a cliff. lol
teh schlage locks do a really good job at annoying you to replace the battery when its low
the lock beeps at you for 5 seconds flashing an orange light before unlocking each time
Fun fact: The original Furby has no hardware voltage regulation. It periodically spins its motor, checks how long it took to move from one indexed location to another, and then speeds up or slows down program execution based on the returned speed:
Yes, that's Furby source code
wow lol
That's also why Furby starts to sound like a hell nightmare when the battery runs low. Elsewhere in the code, it syncs overall execution speed with the detected motor speed to keep lip-sync working, and if it can't spin the motor fast enough (due to a nearly flat battery) the sound starts to slow down. It has no ability to time-stretch the audio, so the playback starts to break up.
Kinda neat figuring out how things like that were built down to a price
For anyone that had the crappy firmware update for their TP-Link smartplugs... https://twitter.com/home_assistant/status/1331003814477000705
Good news! @TPLINK has made it possible to restore local API access to their HS100/HS110 smart plugs. It's not easy, but at least it's possible. We hope it's a temporary method and they will implement a better solution in the future. https://t.co/7IXNbggXsU
They're not bricked anymore π€£
why i am always weary of ever upgrading firmware on anything that currently works fine lol
it does help though when you can contribute and attempt to fix the issue....but def always a fear of it stopping

Has anyone ever made a health check for themselves/family
ie. Answer a prompt twice a day, otherwise family will get an alert
I would have thought it would have been an app but I can't find anything. I might be searching for the wrong phrases though
Haven't seen that, but with integration of sensors around the house, the mobile device, and maybe your smart watch/fitness tracker it should be possible to spot abnormal behaviour
I'm just thinking for people who live alone, especially the elderly or those taking care of small children,
It's good to have a health check that sends up a flare if something goes wrong
we had a case last year where a mother and her two daughters were dead in an apartment for two weeks before anyone noticed they were gone
we are talking about kids in the age of 10-15
Gas leak?
nope, apparent suicide by poisoning
Murder suicide from the mother?
possibly, uncertain
I mean, a health check wouldn't stop intentional stuff obviously
But my great grandmother was trapped on her floor for over a day when she fell
Could of been longer if we didn't live next door
had a collegue who lived in an apartment, his neighbour died and was laying in the summer for... over a month
he thought the other neighbours cat was pissing in the hallway
because the smell was seeping in through his door
Motion sensors would definitely be a lot less obtrusive than a button or mobile prompt but they run the risk of false positives from pets and small children
modern motion sensors can be adjusted to not detect pets and small children
or... any motion sensor from the last 25 years
Pressure sensor in seats?
If you've got load sensors you could even tell who was sat where π
oh no, uncle john has been sittin for 48 hours
he's just binging the vampire diaries
I love the stories of load sensor values going up and down on guest beds. There are some things you just donβt need to know π€£
Spent $30 on 900grams of shredded 'cheese' today
Dairy/egg/wheat free is so expensive
Would be nice to get some of that Norway subsidies for this,
is it still cheese?
ok so like a steak without the cow
eh, worldwide being able to handle dairy is the exception not the norm
It's only really people descendant from Northern Europe that can handle it
i would not tell the middle east people that....i saw plenty of milk and wheat turned into bread ... actually some pretty damn good stuff
man i would really love to have some pita ....they drank mostly goats milk ...i dont know if thats lactose or not
I'm lactose intolerant but I can handle a lot of yoghurt etc,
But my daughter is allergic so it's a no go
which she funnily enough inherited from my anglo-saxon/british wife
So my daughter is quite possibly lactose tolerant but the dairy allergy trumps that all
π€£ is "yoghurt" the same as "yogurt"
Yes π
For World to American translation just take out some of the letters and spell half of them wrong
Oh ok ...trying to be sensitve LOL ....i thought it was some kinda yoga that hurt
That would be all of them
sounds like a experence that went south
@clear ferry come back to me when you can live in a country with a UV index above 0.1 without turning into a lobster
Even Pakistan guys who come here say it's too strong
Atx, are you using motion eye?
Which camera settings are you using for casting to Google home?
#cameras-archived π
If someone can share his/her camera integration for motion eye, uses duckdns ssl and is able to cast, please share to me in #cameras-archived
for casting to google home I use Home assistant to record a 10 second snippet and then cast that on google home π€£ not motion -> home
I don't do any direct stuff
but probably #cameras-archived people do
Are Google hubs even useful?
Yup
As a speaker/display, sure.
Interesting, told my Google home to shut up
The new UI is better than the old one too
You'll hear him crying in the middle of the night.
The new UI makes for quite nice device control, just like you get in the Home app
Plus it doubles as a clock/photo frame π
So you use the Google Home integration and not trying to cast lovelace?
Nah, I don't make enough use of them as "control panels" to make that worth doing
goddang, im getting fustrated to this hassio on raspberry pi, i cant get it to fetch an ip.
