I'm thinking to start with Zigbee devices because it's cheaper and I have good wireless coverage. Maybe I should start with buying security cameras and sensors and something that allows me to voice control devices
Anyone happen to know a good article to get recommended for buying hardware?
A single article? 🤔
You'll find a bunch of recommendations if you scroll back through #hardware-archived or check out the forums.
Thanks... There are just way too many brands 🙂
saw that eaton makes smart switches and outlets. costs an arm and leg but you know those suckers are robust lol they have z wave and wifi ones
link?
I am programming something which sends data to an mqtt server.
Lets say I have 100 key-value pairs for one device, what should I do?:
1. publish one message with a single big json string containing all values to a single topic representing the device
2. publish to 100 different subtopics (of the device topic) representing the field names
3. publish 100 somehow distinguishable messages to a single topic representing the device
i personally would say one since mqtt/ha can parse json values
but creating a custom compent that created entitys would be best
Number 1 should be very performant, too. But maybe thats no advantage if I anyway somehow can send 100 messages as batch
but creating a custom compent that created entitys would be best
@dull chasm Thats might be step two after I made the data available on mqtt.
I am unsure if you hint me to something specific. I am not familiar with creating custom components yet.
Based on my current knowledge I would just add a card to my home assistant and connect it to the data manually.
@fast canyon man to be honest ...i have been on 80 hour weeks for 12 weeks ...so my brain is fried ....but if this is just for yourself then have fun but if it can benifit the community it may help to ask the guys in #developers
@dull chasm: Definitely time for a long nap. Get some rest :)
I am actually planning to publish the mentioned python program. If I can do somthing for home assistant, too I am willing to. Will evaluate that. Thank you for your hint.

Have you been running for president?
I hope you won 🙂
but creating a custom compent that created entitys would be best
@dull chasm Custom component not necessary. That feature is baked right into the core. 🙂

@shy comet android app reports CID ?
@tidal bronze use the new last notification sensor with the phone app selected. It will show up under one of the attributes
Not on mine
Try the Google phone app? 😜
Wowza .....Tasker then 🙂
Rabbits are People Too
Can someone explain to me the legality of a company basing it’s monitoring system on home assistant and selling a hub with home assistant pre-loaded on it?
would depend on it's marketing I suppose
I suppose so too, which I think would actually be the biggest stumbling block because big companies don’t like to share
And small companies for that matter want their name to be branded along side the big company instead of just taking a backseat and enjoying the promotion in new subscriber base
Luckily I’m not a marketing person
Just to clarify I’m not imagining anything nefarious, I just have a real chance of getting my battery manufacturer to Get on board so I’m trying To talk out how to best propose everything that needs proposing
In my case I don’t think they would want to stay away from the fact that the product uses home assistant software - That’s part of the appeal. But I don’t know if that product could actually be sold for a profit with the software being a feature without some sort of official permission because I’m not too familiar with open source licensing rules
But to me it’s an opportunity to bring our user base on to home assistant
Accidentally bought myself an SMX1000i with a front (new battery refurb).
WOOPS
The 1200VA was 600NOK or something
Supported by most operating systems via NUT too which is nice
By my reckoning I shouldn't have a lot of load, I run around 210W at the moment. Got that down to 200 with 2 less cameras (old 1366 server eats electric). New router will pull like 25W, same for bare NAS. Instead of about 90W for my 1366 system. Might be able to build the same at around 150W with more modern and efficient components
Oh yeah for sure
graceful shutdown is just as important as battery backup
planning to have OPNsense as my NUT master
useful to have internet when there is a power cut. not that it happens often here. but may well do when I move. Want to live in the middle of no where

I've almost seen the loch ness once, but I think it ended up just beeing a weird wave
Almost seeing something that doesn't exist is pretty impressive.

You might be better asking in #hardware-archived I think.
I use Ikeas outlets and lights though.
Definitely better asking support questions in a support channel
@gloomy temple There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.

With the abundance of wifi smart plugs, is it common occurence thus far that people have been left with paper weights after the company switches of there AWS servers?
There's apparently some new standard being developed by the zigbee people...
so zigbee well be abandoned as well, I've heard
ZigBee won't be abandoned.
Considering there's already a huge market for ZigBee, it's not going to go away just because someone else creates an alternative.
It'll be a slow transition, and that's assuming they even get it off the ground to begin with,
the point was that it's not "someone else" it's the zigbee peopel that hav said zigbee is no good and we have to replace it. Something along those lines. But I know to little about it
As far as the Zigbee protocol used today, here’s what CHIP says about it in the future: “Yes, the Zigbee Alliance and its members are continuing to drive the development and growth of the Zigbee protocol, both today and after the launch of the Project’s protocol. Those developing Zigbee products today will continue with confidence.”
We all know things can change... but they currently have no plans to phase out ZigBee.
the goog thing is that your zigbee devices will keep on working
Of course they will, I have all the hardware 😉
even if they stop doing more devices
Technology lives on for years after it is replaced
Just look at the American infrastructure
🤣
Hey all, I’m going to setup a VLAN for all my IOT devices. I’ve got a couple architecture questions:
- should my RPi runnning Hassio be on the same VLAN as IOT, or separate? From a security perspective.
Yes
- how does auto discovery work across VLANs, if it’s a separate VLAN?
Depends on protocol
Do you enable talk on specific protocols between VLANs on the router? ( I’m using a UDM pro)
In fear of repeating myself for the nth time, people who don't understand networking who try to "secure" their networks often just end up making it more insecure, so know what you are doing ;-) best regards a guy who has worked with networking for 20 years
Haha, so you would suggest keeping it all on the same network until I get educated?
It’s a fair point. Then the follow up is - how do I learn?
Well.. that is your choice, you add complexity that people who don't understand how stuff works create workarounds for that in the end makes it just as secure as having devices on the same network
If you are willing to learn, it is a good field to have knowledge in
I don't know UDM at all, won't touch that, but you can start out by placing a single device you intend to talk to in a different VLAN, with no firewall allow rules in place, then start looking at firewall logs and see what is actually going on
Both trying to reach it, and it trying to reach something else
Great idea - just to play around with it, learn, without disrupting everything
Exactly
I would say, do it on your lab enviroment, but then I remembered, not everyone has a lab enviroment 🤣
Another architecture question though - how do you know what devices to separate on different VLANs? IOT, HA, my NAS, phones/work computers etc
That is entirely up to your level of paranoia
My threat model is script kiddie
I currently run 4 VLANs, 99% of my stuff is on my primary vlan, I have one VLAN for access to my lab enviroment from the internet directly, one for my wifes cybersecurity sandbox and one just for placing stuff in an isolated vlan to poke it
I know I’m not locking out the NSA, maybe not even the Chinese or Russians. Although it would be a great side effect if It could be done
Ok that’s helpful
So you include IOT on same VLAN as most things
My lab enviroment can be accessed from LAN but not from any of the other enviroments, and it is reachable by its own WAN IP, my wifes sandbox can only reach WAN, none of the other networks, my isolated VLAN cannot reach anything, I just put stuff there to see how it behaves, it is also reachable from my LAN
How do you get separate WAN IPs from a single internet provider (this is a limit of my knowledge....)?
Everything I have in regards to IoT is on my LAN yes, and I block individual devices as I see fit
from accessing the WAN
I have had atleast a /28 network from my ISPs for the last 20 years
Is that a special case you managed to snag or typical of US-based ISPs??
Basically, pull the WAN into it's own vlan, then just distribute that VLAN to ports \ devices you need to have directly exposed to the internet
they will get a WAN IP
Ah I see
Lol
🤢
They are a shit show, it’s terrible.
Most I have ever had need for was 8 IPs, and I had that from my ISP in 2004
Currently I only use 3 IPs not sure how many I have from my current ISP
that is just IPv4 though, I have a full /48 I belive of IPv6
8 IP's for one home connection. That's why IPv4 ran out of addresses...
SORRY ABOUT THAT
I agree zigbee all the way but just trying to gauge if there has been any wifi plug that have been made paperweights yet, I know there is hubs but not so much heard about plugs
A lot of wifi plugs yes
since 99% of them are cloud based
while zigbee will always have local fallback
Even my TP-Link Kasa stuff that can be controlled locally still needs to use their app to set up.
If they decide to switch it off, I'll never be able to pair it to a new network.
SORRY ABOUT THAT
@clear ferry nono. That’s a GOOD thing. https://xkcd.com/865/

Then I shouldn't mention all the hpc university stuff I set up
Or mention that my company owns quite a few blocks
I think we own 3 /8 blocks now
Even seasoned network guys sometimes hose a VLAN setup and spend hours figuring out why...
Yeah, after doing 14 hours if implementation I can make rookie mistakes too
yall must be really bored to be worried about america ....not like you are perfect

ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32. You can find their documentation here, and get help here in the #diy-archived channel. They have their own Discord server too.
You could ask folks there, or in #diy-archived

Does anyone know how to DM someone on the community forum? Or if SeLLeRoNe is here under a different name?
dang really
any wifi experts that know where to debug at "invalid MIC in msg 2/4 of 4-Way Handshake" on a regular WPA join request (the device has been connected, then getting this at reboot). Happens on WPA1 and 2, short password, long, everything special turned off. It always fails on invalid MIC
Wpa1 🤕
But it appears to be a protocol disagreement
So, I see mentions of forcing AES instead of AES tkip mode and disabling mixing of 2.4 and 5ghz ssid
I tried wpa1 and wpa2, no mix, legacy support etc
whatever I do I get the same error
I start to wonder if the issue is on the client side, not the ap side
By specs the wifi chip they are using should support all modern auth methods http://www.hi-flying.com/hf-lpt120?fbclid=IwAR1W718QypWhsYnsSzyv4vvGoms2gJdP8PcXNg065hWgp37ejv5pC7ag0E8

funny thing is if I set the product in AP mode, enter the ssid/password it works, but after rebooting it, it get that error. If I rejoin it from the router it works
Click on their name, click Message
@clever mortar ah I wasn’t logged in
@late gate Def a client issue, but could be related to whatever ap you are running
Have you tried any other ap just for lulz?
yes, works on all cheap routers like altibox etc, but when you get into ap with a bit more settings no go
thats why they wont fix it. it works for most people
thats true, but its no logical reason why
its a lot of other routers it doesnt work with too
in general people need to do init setup with their phone with a hotspot
then connect it to the router
but seem like unifi is too clever for that "trick"
ofc you do :p
could it be that usg is using radius on the bottom with a vlan that makes it too complex
that the vlan is makes the client crazy
As I understand the error it is layer2 atleast
Sure it's not layer 8?
Could be layer 3.14
Oh hush
Is anyone a network expert?
Well, WiFi and networking experts... not a common combo 😛
true. Its not too important the frakking oven cant connect. its just my OCD kicking in that one act like a child and wont connect
Wait this is for your oven lol
Smart ovens? 😮
yes
not like food oven
heater then
its just annoying when something is not working
or more annoying when its working a bit, then not working
Ah. I have my heating set up via Zigbee. I really dislike WiFi.
why
Long live zigbee
yes, but this oven doesnt have zigbee
should put an xbee in it
hoping for better xbee support in the open source projects
WiFi2MQTT2Zigbee2MQTT - we should get @scenic radish on that
I am very happy today.
why?
There is a disease that I have been trying to get rid of for the past 4 years. Finally happened.
congrats! good feeling
@last plaza dont be a hater
Let me just leave a friendly reminder that the no politics rule applies to mods too, and suggest we drop this sooner rather than later.
Timing was horrible! Looks like folks are confused with the disease that I have been battling with other stuff!

Hi guys. Which is the best channel to talk about Tasmota and home assistant? Got a problem i cant work out >.<
#integrations-archived probably
@last plaza so that was confused ....i knew of your problem ..i cant believe he would make that statement and assumption without knowing the facts
its ok @low harness we still love ya even thou you where mean to us

Lol just noticed the horrible automatic translation in home assistant to Norwegian
Can I interest you in some https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/translations?

Psssh, let the bastards who want norwegian have it

"reload flippy bois"
Hey everyone, would this be a suitable place to ask for recommendations on what device to install Home Assistant on? (Total beginner) I was looking at potentially getting an old Dell Wyse Thin Client instead of a Raspberry Pi, I was wondering if anyone uses one and could recommend?
No, but #hardware-archived or #general-archived would be a good spot
Thank you
(but almost anything other than a pi would be better)
Except, possiby, an Etch-a-Sketch
I'll go to #hardware-archived
Good point, any computer rather
What's the smallest wifi switch out there now? Sonoff mini shelly etc ?
Hey all.
Dunno which channel to put this in, I'll ask here.
Anyone know of any alternatives to ngrok, but free (or cheaper)? I'm looking for some sort of tunnel to localhost which allows me to access the web interface from anywhere, outside my network.
Rather than conventional port forwarding, I would prefer a tunnel approach as my raspi does not require a static IP.
@low harness you need to make a custom card like this https://smithtractorco.com/Package-Specials
Save monthly on John Deere equipment specials and packaged deals.
never saw anything like that before
pretty neat
Why not just run a VPN server at home?
@dull chasm got ya some tractor buddies you hang around with and talk plow with?
no pervert
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/lovelace-swiper-card/72447 @dull chasm like that?
Before I go and purchase this device, I want to confirm that it will work. According to https://community.home-assistant.io/t/stream-component-confirmed-cameras-and-configurations/106729 if my IP camera is listed with JPEG & FFMPEG it will work with HA https://www.ispyconnect.com/man.aspx?n=Imou Will a Imou bullet lite work?

This is probably the wrong place to ask but nobody was responding in # cameras
Why not just run a VPN server at home?
@clever mortar still requires some firewall changes. I change routers a lot, so I want to make my setup as zeroconfig as possible
@light trout thats pretty close.... not as pretty ...
There's various thinks like ZeroTier that handle that
Alternatively, don't change routers that much 😛
need moar john deere!
There's various thinks like ZeroTier that handle that
@clever mortar will Google that
Still doesn't look exactly like what I want.
I would still like to use Google assistant, so I'll need home assistant accessible on my own domain, without tinkering with a VPN and such

Well, with the way 2020 has gone ... I'd not be shocked
Pretty sure COVID-19 is neither politics or religion. At least, I really hope it's neither 🤔
You?

Damn
So it's no longer all prison?
@clever mortar all hail lord Covid, my Shepard, I will vote him out when I can
From what was said before, that should have been:
@wild moss covid covid covid covid, covid covid, covid covid covid covid covid covid covid covid
winter bellies during summer wasn't too bad either
What's a winter belly? I carry this thing around all year.
My fat ass should get more exercise
But the only exercise I enjoy is swimming
Which is.... Very restricted during covid
Anybody use moisture sensors for houseplants? I am just terrible with plants and wondering if a moisture sensor would reliably tell me when I should water
I use the Aqara ones. They're okay. But now that I know how to care for the plants, I don't think I need the sensors anymore.
There's no point having sensors tell you something's too wet/dry if you don't know what counts as too wet/dry.
I have a swich which I press whenever I waterd the plants.
when I not press it in 3 days I ll get a alexa notification triggerd by motion
quite anoying
Yeah I figure I'd get used to the schedule quickly anyway. I'd like to find out when to water besides a very droopy plant, but like you're saying I'd probably just find out when to water before finding out what measurements are the point of watering
You water plants every 3 days? Some of mine only need watering once a month 😄
Another one needs it almost daily.
not all of them of cause, but they surrive at least 3 days
I have a couple of carniverous plants that would shrivel up and die if I left them that long. Especially my sundew plant.
The butterwort is a little more forgiving.
@forest edge you need to really work on your footwork
bigger pots is the secret in my household, but most of the stuff I got is super forgiving
like there suckers
we call them scheidenblatt (vaginaleaves?)
you dont water them for 2 weeks, nothing happens, they just look a little sad
sheath leaf, booooring english name 🤣
Peace lily?
I love your first translation though 🤣
I have a Calathea on my desk. It hasn't flowered yet but it's really cool. Top side of the leaves are a dark green, underside is a deep burgundy red. The leaves 'open' and 'close' each day, makes it look like it's putting hands together to pray.
Not my picture:
The rental I'm in has the entire reticulation running off one solenoid
No master solenoid either
Everything either gets too much water or not enough
Peace lily is what I am trying to find out how to water rn
Gonna repot it to a pot with drainage holes so I can make sure it doesn't get waterlogged
Is that smaug?
What's that? A gif for ants?
Smol
"I don't think it was very little" - Not Mrs atx
Nah
😦
Maybe there's an actual question though?
Why would you use any arch-based distro tho?
Manjaro user base is probably very low
Wifi just crashed
Have you tried throwing it out the window yet?
+1
Restart wpasupplicant or whatever Manjaro uses
Ubuntu for desktop, Debian for server (or FreeBSD)
Debian for desktop
laptop?
Laptop is just a portable desktop 😉
Ubuntu is basically Debian with less stability, and canonical spying on you.
Change my mind
Mmmmmm tinfoil people
hey dont eat us
For laptop I would go with debian, but don't install gnome
Go with a more lightweight DE
Lel
Gnome stopped being good around 2004, KDE since
u use KDE?
Yes
interesting
I shall try manjaro for the next following week
if nothing good happens
I still like gnome, with a ton of extensions it looks pretty alright.
I'm switching to debian
But for laptop, I always prefer something lightweight
Unless you have a somewhat beefy laptop / not a literal potato like most of my laptops lel
Well yes
Why has lounge suddenly devolved into sentence fragments?
@umbral agate 4core i7 with Nvme and 48g ram beefy enough?
Why has lounge suddenly devolved into sentence fragments?
@deft pewter just cuz
@deft pewter just cuz
@umbral agate 4core i7 with Nvme and 48g ram beefy enough?
@clear ferry yes
Alpine if you want lightweight and secure....
thought manjaro will be nice
I agree with tink, Ubuntu for desktop and Debian for servers
Or if you go enterprise, sles
But I'm biased
sles?
Haven't played with SLES in a loooooooong time
Solaris?
Here , try this:
http://letmegooglethat.com/?q=sles
Their hardware kicked ass though 😉
Yeah, well, I don't count Oracle
Only thing Oracle seems to be good for is ramping up prices and suing folks...
So, like any American entrepreneurship then
With their cyborg CEO too
Finally got the cover on my overwinter greenhouse
Wouldn't it be easier to just have pet rocks?
For desktop I would go ubuntu for simplicity and any problems you might encounter someone has already fixed it @midnight adder
Debian is nice if you know exactly what you are doing
And I got it working
Without fire coming out of anything
I currently have an ubuntu server running my pihole, going to build it into opnsense though when I reinstall
@clear ferry non free drivers are what is causing this
also, If i download the iso + non-free will it install them firectly
Eh, probably more related to shitty hardware tbh, although Huawei should be decent
No issues with Intel WiFi here in either my Chromebook or my zbook
Tried it on the meatebook d, it directly said need non-free drivers
All the Fi, none of the Wi.
Less cables to chew with wifi
Cable chewing is one of my favorite activities
One of those monster underwater fiber cables is top of my bucket list atm
But not worked out how I can have breathing aparatus and chew the cable
yet
Breathe with your nose - should be an easy if uncomfortable modification to the SCUBA gear
Omg that is ingenious
Thank you
If anyones internet goes out soon. It wasn't me
But seriously. Wifi is fantastic. It is just such a pity that it is so easily made worse by interference and by building materials.
It would be great if it was strong microwaves that penetrated everything and warmed you up if you got too close
Maybe mesh systems are the answer. Or multiple access points, over building in ao much speed into a router with wifi
Like. You have light bulbs in every room. Because light doesn't go through walls. Probably should be like that with wifi
We make 1 ap work in out 94m2 appartment
Defo need more when we move
WiFi doesn't go through walls well... it's already like light 😄
5g less than 2.4
Yeah, I know
There has been some work done on that kind of setup - high frequency that doesn't penetrate well, it's pretty much LoS though
Use commercial AP's, I'm going with the Unifi AP Pros. As it is now, you step outside my house and lose WiFi. I live in an unintentional faraday cage....
Unifi 🤢
atxbyea 🤢
I like my unifi AP
Eap245
I was playing Tomb Raider the other day a propos psx games. 3D game controlls sure have come a long way.
Yes, although the original ps controller was great
Compared to most other controllers at the time
Oh yes
I’ve never held an n64 controller with an analog stick that didn’t move on its own.
N64 was like.... Someone had babies with their brother for three generations and then lost an arm or three in the war
I think the inline 5s are the best sounding volves anyway atxbyea :)
Aye, this one has a sport exhaust too
But yeah, the Audi 5cyls are some of the most interesting engines of all time
The Japs had some cool v6s during the 90s though
American engines at the time were... Horrible for the most part, unless you wanted a lorry or just use 4x as much gas with no fun
Audi v6s were a lot of issues with, but I've had three, and I loved them all, while also hating them
Hope I get to try a W12 at some point
american enigines horrible i beg to differ
always have had more bhp per ci than any other
And more issues per mile 😛
Solves the problem of more power by simply adding more CC to the engine ✅
@scenic radish not by any means ...
@clever mortar we do ci not cc ....duh
on small little engines like atvs and weedeaters we use cc
we have started do liters ...like my engine in truck is 5.0 liters but everybody still calls it a 302ci
i've definitely always talked about displacement in liters
But muh freedom units!
ironically i'd have no clue what someone was talking about if they used cubic inches
Yeah, kinda weird anyone's still using imperial still
Cubic inches makes sense on 50-60 year old cars
ffs i wish the US used metric for everything. i use imperial for most things, but i use metric for computing
I wish the UK would stop using them completely. We switched a ton of stuff over but still do speed/distance in miles. 😦
yeah you guys are weird over there
It's a pain. I have zero clue why we didn't change the roads at the same time we changed all other measures.
It's not like cars don't have dual dials on them...
The most confusing part about driving in the UK and us is how far it is to an off ramp
Because I don't do miles in my head
I just assume I'll be travelling roughly 60mph and that makes it a mile a minute. Easy, now all your exits can be measured in minutes.
I usually start getting over to the exit lane 2mi out and that works out most times
same
Actually the whole miles thing is more confusing than the reverse roundabouts in the UK
I imagine trying to do that at 2km would be way too late 😛
No
The roundabouts are correct in the UK
The rest of the world drives on the wrong side
The rest of the world begs to differ
Why do you think it is called right hand drive?
And some McDonald's?
Because it is right
@clear ferry there are a bunch but most people don't really know how to use them
I don't think I've ever seen one in the us, in any travel or any TV show
We got roundabouts everywhere now
Not super common and are typically used for smaller intersections that were originally 4-way stops
Or a 2-way stop that became too busy to handle the load
If you look at the maps in cities, you will find them a lot.
The UK roundabouts are pretty strange though, 5-6 stop lights inside some of them
Confession time, I was born in the UK, live there for 21 years and moved to Sweden. Took driving licence in Sweden, everyone drives on the wrong side.
In our county, they are slowly converting all 4-way to roundabouts.
Yeah, cities fuck them up though with stop signs and lights. Looking at you DC
Damn
I drove over a roundabout like that in winter once @last cedar
With 3meters of snow I couldn't even see it
Just followed the tracks of the snowmobiles
And awesome
Not really, it was a lower one, with no edge
Just went straight through
Noticed a little bump
🤣
Audi Quattro just plowed through it
Northern Sweden has the same road signs and registration plates as the UK? 😮
I thought you were commenting on the video, my bad
Unacceptable
Wonder why my circadian lighting has stopped adjusting the lights in my living room 🧐
i have noticed same but havent troubleshooted it yet
Circadian still working fine here 🤷
Elections have Consequences
It's almost certainly a layer 8 issue
Completely new to HA here and want to integrate it with zwave. I run HA in docker in server-room and I have a remote rpi with razberry hat. Where can I find instruction in how to set this up?
@clever mortar but i have trancended the layer 8 to become one with layer 10
See #zwave-archived for help with Z-Wave @cinder heart - and the Docker docs for passing devices through to the container ( #449717345808547842 for that bit if you're stuck)
dang i was fixing to bragg on tink ...but here it comes
since i am smart i will do first
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.
No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and #rules.

@clever mortar thank you, I'll check it out. "Passing devices through" sounds like local connectivity on the same machine. In my case the machine running the HA container and the zwave rpi is a remote machine.
Well, then if you're using OZW it doesn't matter
you are welcome
@clear ferry To experiment, I setup a corporate VLAN with Unifi, and then created a firewall rule (LAN In) to drop all traffic from IOT VLAN to LAN. I got my Roborock connected to the IOT network. Now I want to open up a single port between the Roborock and my iPhone (that is on the LAN network), so that I can access the Roborock/Valeutdo interface on my iPhone. Having trouble figure out the correct firewall rule for this -
I created a new rule of LAN In "Accept" on protocol 80, with source being my iPhone IP and destination being the IP of the Roborock on the IOT network, but I get connection timed out when I actually try it.
Any thoughts on the best way to set this up, or why this isn't working?
This is an example. My iPhone is on my default LAN network.
You need probably both rules on both nets
I don't know how unifi does rules though 🤢
Also remember what I said about reading firewall logs
Got it working - basically I needed to drop the two specific port 80 rules, and then create a new rule allowing established or related connections through from IOT to LAN. Now my roborock can't ping any device on my LAN network, but I can establish a connection with it via my iPhone.
Why is it reading backwards?
need nerd advice
buying a gaming monitor
300mhz with 3ms response and no gysnc
or
360mhz with 5ms response with gysnc
sooo dang tough.....
gsync/freesync every time
yea so the naked eye can really only see so much lol
so my other thing i guess
its a 2080 super..
so if im not running north of 360 frames would it mattter
this is what im looking at and it has two monitor options
depends on your bionic eyes i suppose. while people can easily differentiate 60fps to 120fps etc, when you get to like 240ish you gotta really be a cyborg
yeah ive gone frome 60hz to 240hz and could def tell the difference
type of game and how good your eyes are really determine the refresh rates effectiveness(noticable) in games
im more worried about the sacrificing response time for gysnc and another additional 60hz.
rust, COD, apex, PUBG, tarkov
mostly FPS gaames
someone posted this graphic on reddit which should give you an idea https://www.blurbusters.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/lag-csgo.png
that like first gen gsync too, that has improved since then
so I stand by the gsync/freesync every time comment lol
guess the way i look at it though.. if im not gonna run north of 360fps then gysnc will kick in and lower my refresh rate to match my frames
if im only running say 250 fps say... then wouldnt the 300hz and lower response time be better since I wont be able to even take advantage of 360hz? lol
so dang complicated
its really not complicated. companies flood the market with crap making claims of crap that really don't impact the experience the game as much as they try and brain wash people to believe
It's kinda cute people think they can see the difference 🤷♂️
I'd be hard pressed to believe anyone can honestly see the difference above 120fps
It's an odd thing to try to feel superior about too
30 to 60, absolutely. 60 to 120, sure. 120+? Doubt
think linus did a video about 240fps. and even though the staff couldn't see the difference they were able to freeze frame and show there was
you really gotta be bionic to be able to use it to your advanatge tho if you could see it
i agree i cant see the difference in 300 and 360hz
but do i care about that response time though
When are we going to see you win eSports leagues?
thats another thing, you can't see the diffrence lol
Higher res? Great. Bigger panels? Great.
Most other specs are just marketing gimmicks.
hell mice have been around 5ms for a very long time and people can't see the delay in the cursor lol
and the you think you can tell a diffrence between 3ms and 5ms? lol
Yeah, no-one can react to milliseconds.
But anyone that thinks they can is the target audience for all that overpriced crap, right? 😄
Just add RGB, or download more RAM
so will this run minecraft?
Sure. Just don't try Crysis.
$4k for a laptop is... nuts.
i know it hurts me inside
but im in hotels most nights
so cant carry a tower with a 3080 in it
sniffle sniffle
The first $2k gets you something solid. I'm not sure the second $2k gets you anything meaningful on top.
🤷♂️
and a alien ware logo is $1700
expensive foil sticker
but gives you an additional 15fps
More frames you won't notice 🤣
haha
i used to game on our TV
was 60hz and who knows what response time
couldnt figure out why i sucked.. thought it was cause i was getting older and these kids were running laps on me
then bought a desk and a monitor. 1ms monitor and 240hz
felt like I was cheating
thats when I realized the micro stutters and response time was hurting me
but agree I probably couldnt tell the difference in anything over 120hz
and then there is the fact that I still am getting older by the day and I still suck at games
Your network limits you more than your monitor ever can if you are not playing in a LAN setting
But he's got 'evidence' that all this marketing stuff works.
It's not controlling for one very important variable though... time. All those additional hours of practise.
Well sure, technically it does, but not to a degree that anyone would benefit from
Humans are too slow
Anyway... it's his money. He's welcome to part with it 🙂
If you see it, and it seems real, don’t judge, cause it just might be
lol, y'all are funny
120 to 144 is pretty noticeable for me, 144 to 240 hz is not a huge difference to me but it's there, I'm buying a 360hz but don't plan on seeing much difference that what a 144hz would look like
the difference between 144 and 360 isn't big at all and not worth much if you're worried about 'er
the game I play is 128 updates per second but the refresh rate is very useful just for the fast motions
I just want one of the high refresh IPS panels they have now, alienware is coming out with a fancy 1440p one but I will probably just get something 1080p like usualy
who is using a 5ms mouse, lol
who is using a 5ms mouse, lol
@night zodiac it's irrelevant since it takes you longer to press the mouse button. the point is you were conflicted over a 3ms to 5ms difference in monitor response time which again you would never be able to see.
that isn't what I am asking. who is using their mouse at that low of a hz
who is buying a monitor based off of response time?
Whelp my server ded
oh no
did you kill it with inputs or did it take itself out?
tested the PSU yet?
Power supply checks ok with paperclip test and even a bunch of drives spinning off it
ahh
voltages etc
I assume you reseated RAM
Took out all the ram, put one stick back in,
dango
unplugged everything, pulled all the cards
the only thing left to do is to pull the CMOS for a while and see if she just got fucky
It's probably the motherboard
but I want to get a new CPU if I get a new mobo
or I just buy another intel board, but I was hoping to jump ship to Ryzen
I just bought a 10900K with no regrets, lol
a little before the announcement but I'm happy with it even though I haven't built it yet
I've been spending loads on furniture for the new place so waiting to build it there
I won't have to move it either
WTF is LGA1151-CL,
I have no idea how that compares to a LGA1151
Whenever I look at MB/cpu selections on a site I'm like..
coffee lake
I think I am going to get a Stryx E mobo to go with my 3090
You should get a rack in a shock mounted road case
Never have to rebuild things again
Just wheel your tech onto a tail lift truck and away you go
It's times like this I wish I had some highly available infrastructure
Nodes dead, oh well, I'll get to that
high availability is very hard though.
I don't host anything at my house that would be more convenient if I could yell at someone else if things go fucky
I phrased that fucky
oh well
Even buying things can be screwy sometimes
Like my Surface laptop. If that goes bad I have to send it off to Microsoft for 1-infinity weeks
closer to the latter
If this was business stuff I'd be like, next day onsite repair 4+ years for everything
But cloud the shit out of everything you can
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086QSH67R this is what I want
it will match my gfx card nicely
I wonder if I should just ebay off my CPU
xeon?
nopee
i5 7500
And just get a ryzen 5 for the server
If I have to buy a new mobo anyways
they sell for like $100
That's still a good chunk off a ryzen
fo sho
the motherboard is a sunken cost,
yerp
I am probably within 30 days to return this 10900k if I wanted
I might just amazon a new power supply first anyways just to be sure
yeah, I just got the 10900K on the 27th
hrmmm, 5950X still possible, lol
I wonder when they will be in stock
If I can buy a 5950X before I have to return my 10900K, I will
These are all just numbers to me 🙂
I order a power supply
Should get here in two days, if the Amazon gods are kind
I move in 1 week. I have so many addresses to change online
I kinda hope it is the power supply, as I'd rather save the money to build a new desktop PC
Have you looked up a checklist online
I've found them handy
moving checklist? I almost did
lol I used to in the past but I sort of just made my own this time
Also can you set up a mail forwarding service
Checklist of places to change your address with
Also I'd recommend leaving a note with the people who move into your current house
with your forwarding address. a tiny card they can stick in a drawer or a fridge
Sometimes you get stuff 3-4 years later
man, I still get mail for some lady and I have living here for years
we tried to tell USPS and give them the mail
but they sent it back to us
surely they know where she lives
Morning :)
I'm just freezing here in the bed. Winter not even started
I would love to have one of these suckers to do backups at home.. But 40-65k kills my budget by just a teeny tiny bit
IBM 🤢
I thought you work for IBM 🤣
Well I'm just stuck now with gpfs ceph and IBM, what do you preference
BeeGFS or Lustre 🤣
I know a little bout BeeFS. Same?
And the guys which where running the cluster were super unhappy
99% of my HPC customers run either BeeGFS or Lustre
now that we bought Cray I guess more will use ClusterStor E1000
I probably even mean beegfs
Still lives 🤣
Does this make you go 🤢 atx
look at those switches
2.5PB with a couple of shitty netgears?
would we end up in a flame-ware if we discuss xboxX vs ps5? I'm trying to decide
THAT SOUNDS LIKE POLITICS
🤣
I'll probably end up getting both in the end, wife plays xbox I play PS
I play neither atm. I have an old ps4 but havent touched it in years
Everything, except the release games, speak for xbox. But I feel like I will end up regretting getting the xbox 😐
controllers are really a personal thing, I've never really liked the ps controller. But the new ps5 controllers features seems really cool
@hasty kestrel I'm not sure that fits in this channel since this is strictly a none-support channel
@hasty kestrel the onboarding process should do that for you, if it doesn't ask in your installation channel.
Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
Gotta figure out something nice for the wife for our 20th 🤔
For those that don't speak Norwegian - what's the answer 😂
I have no idea, it's a paid article
I don't pay for news, the feckers can have it
usually the paid articles are just bullshit anyway
Paid articles have the best click bait
In norway it is pretty fucked up, because most stuff that should be infrastructure critical is behind paywalls
like lots of ice on the road here, everyone should drive carefully
PAY TO READ
xiaomi gateway 3 just arrived
Propitary gateways 🤢
boo hoo hoo
I fckn love proprietary gateways. $25 and an ethernet port vs. 25 hours reverse engineering their proprietary protocol
🤢
idk how i got invited here, but could somebody possibly do a brief summary of what this is lol
There is a list of FAQs, including one explaining the difference between Home Assistant (the software) and Home Assistant OS (an installer). There is also a glossary explaining many common terms.
It's software
Lolwut
How did I get here?
What is this place!?!
disappears into the void
did you ever get out?
DumpsterDash
👀
Hey, I'm a total noob with docker
I was trying to install doods from github repo
I downloaded the repo, made it executable and executed command docker build -f /path/to/a/Dockerfile .
I executed command from the root dir. Is this fine? I'm freaking out lol
Yes
I'm saying there's already an available container
it's not necessary
I'm scared that somehow it will overwrite everything
just use the docker pull command on that page
I never installed something with a dockerfile, always used compose
so...don't
I ran the command already, it's compiling tensorflow
use a docker-compose with that docker container
287 / 320 compiled
ok, I guess I don't know what the "compiling" part is doing there. I have no direct experience with it, so perhaps you're on the right track
I hope so! I could cry if everything will get removed
lol, someone released an Anime Tiddies / Waifu edition of the RTX 3080
It better come with a matching body pillow 😂
Video card heatsink art has always been a weird thing, I suppose...
Strange marketing. Why sell something that only virgins will buy? They're really limiting their audience 😄
@deft pewter With how limited the RTX 3000 series supply is right now?
A lot of people would buy it just to have a 3080
Even if I was in the market for a 3080, I'd wait.
@clear ferry That bra he's covering his face with is downright adorable, though 👀
👻 🐝
You're something alright
Video card heatsink art has always been a weird thing, I suppose...
@subtle pasture lol wait till you get older. you make this comment about more and more stuff till you just give up lol
I'm only 35 and think most of the stuff that 'young people' do is fucking weird.
I'm a millennial and think gen z is weird
Liar. You've only agreed with me for a few days
@forest edge I thought video card heatsink art was weird a decade+ ago as it came out, lol
They put some crazy stickers on graphics cards
But what about RGB RAM?
I avoided RGB RAM on my current build, intentionally. lol
@subtle pasture have you seen the stupid CPU coolers with LCD screens on them?
this whole RGB phase pisses me off, does nothing but drive up the price
@clear ferry Yeah, and they're generally AIO water coolers, which I can't stand
🤢
Every time I've tried to go AIO, I've been disappointed
Bias lighting is great
This ^
Correctly configured bias lighting increases the perceived contrast ratio of your monitor(s)
Easier on the eyes in the dark and makes your TVs contrast ratio appear higher than it actually is
Heh
Was tempted by one of those kits but might DIY it.
@scenic radish Same page, it would seem
6500k, adjusted for wall color
I think lighting the wall behind tv's is weird
Not a fan of Ambilight?
Zigbee? Is that responsive enough for movies/games?
Oh nvm, I was just thinking static color
Yeah, the Hue gradient light strip is based on Zigbee
And I have an ultrawide monitor, so I reckon I'll need more than one strip 😄
ambient lighting is for restaurants and bars
Proper bias lighting is useful for residential too
If I bought a kit, I'd go with this: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-|-Parts/iCUE-CONTROLLERS/iCUE-LS100-Smart-Lighting-Strip-Starter-Kit/p/CD-9010001-NA
It's not meant as accent lighting, it has a practical purpose
I don't want to walk into my house and immediatly start beatboxing in my head cause of the feeling like i walked into a club
No-one's suggesting lighting up entire rooms in bright colours.
It's a bit of light around the periphery of a screen to lessen eye strain.
ambient lighting..
Bias. Not ambient.
Not a fan of Ambilight?
@subtle pasture
Eye strain is s myth, cmv
no u
@forest edge An ambilight is just an RGB LED strip that matches your monitor's averaged edge color
This message was brought to you by projector in a white room gang
It can also be a generic bias light, if set to one shade of white
Generally though I think people overestimate how much ambient light you need
I've kept my office dark for 30 years, I prefer it like that, and I use flux to control monitor brightness
And colour
This is the Philips Ambilight 43" TV, 4K UHD Freeview-Ready and a Ambilight three sided panel for a truly immersive viewing experience to match the video content behind the TV. (Model 43PUS6753).

atx hunts in the darkness for his meals.
Ambilight is for people with too small screens and that's an actual cmv
always dark at the bottom of the ocean when he hunts for raw giant squid to eat
@orchid rose I used to run an ambilight setup on my triple-monitor setup...
The original Philips Ambx kit
There is/was no shortage of screen, lol
Sounds like you need more light aka screen space
