So I'm not sure where to ask this, but I'm having general issues with Home Assistant. Every single day one or more devices are simply unavailable until I reboot them and then restart HASS. Sometimes it just a lightbulb, sometime its an entire floor of devices. Sometimes its Zigbee, sometimes its ZWave, sometimes its a wifi device. No rhyme or reason other than every single day at least one device will be unavailable.

#

I'm at my wits end, I am coming from SmartThings and after two major outages I had to leave but at this point I'm having micro-outages every single day with Home Assistant

The one that matches your installation method.

velvet horizonBOT
#

Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.

  • If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204

  • If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714

  • If you're running docker commands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842

  • Finally, if you use pip to install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809

Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.

i have all my entities in yaml, i use alot of yaml files with structures in maps and files. i use advanced yaml macro's, etc. pretty content with it
are there more ppl out there that do everything in yaml and disable autodiscovery, or should i stop being such a dinosaur ?

Lol @forest edge Norwegian news just did a jab at American statistics they actually call random people on landlines to query about polling, yeah I'm not kidding landlines in 2020

#

🤣

forest edge
#

whats wrong with landlines?

#

and why would norwegians do that?

turbid stirrup
#

People still have those?

forest edge
#

many people

clever mortar
#

We still have ours

#

Admittedly the only people that call us on it are our (retired) parents

forest edge
#

lol

#

I filter a lot of crap through my landline like dr calls etc

#

that way the answering machine can take it and i don't get pestered when i'm out lol

low harness
#

We had ours just so my wifes grandmother could call us.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, telephone companies stopped offering them here over 10 years ago, and they started disconnecting the remaining customers in 2018

low harness
#

Then our 1-year old got the cord stuck around her neck, and suddenly it wasn't a problem to learn a new number.

clear ferry
#

They expect all landlines to be gone by 2025

low harness
#

We probably shouldn't have had the phone on the floor anyway...

clever mortar
#

We've not had a corded handset since... 25 years ago anyway

clear ferry
#

You can get landlines over fiber, but there isn't very much market for that for people under 80

forest edge
#

corded is a backup and should really only be one if any in a home

clear ferry
#

They started disconnecting the 3g network in 2018 too apparently, it's supposed to be gone in 2022

forest edge
#

@clear ferry my landline is technically provided by cable. it's not through a telephone line on the pole

turbid stirrup
#

Many people in the NL still have it because providers sell bundles with internet, TV and landline combined

clever mortar
#

Our 2G network is gone, the 3G network is still the only thing providing coverage in places 😄

forest edge
#

still don't get why norwegians are calling americans lol

#

low harness

Funny thing is we lived by a stream where you actually Would be able to fit a 20-footer - provided you somehow got it past the mill downstream. So I used to tell them yes.

clear ferry
#

@forest edge they were discussing how Americans are doing their election statistics, like exit polls and automated robo calls on landlines

forest edge
#

@clever mortar you got ble stuff, are they battery?

clever mortar
#

Yeah, I have one BLE thing - a Chipolo beacon

forest edge
#

looking at these temp sensors that are ble that has a ha component but curious how long a ble temp sensor would last on batteries

clever mortar
#

Zigbee FTW

forest edge
#

these are 7 bucks

clever mortar
#

So... same price as Zigbee then 😛

forest edge
#

well zigbee is a twofer, i need a dongle as well

clever mortar
#

$5 if you want a meh one, or a bit more if you want a decent one

#

One time cost

forest edge
#

besides all the zigbee stuff i seen are like 15-20 bucks

clever mortar
#

Two words:

  1. AliExpress
  2. Xiaomi
forest edge
#

aliexpress would take a year to ship

subtle pasture
#

The one issue with Xiaomi stuff is it'll all desync and require re-pairing if your HA instance is offline for too long

clever mortar
#

24 hours...

subtle pasture
#

I've had it happen in 2 hours...

forest edge
#

zigbee just came out with an update protocol or something too, so how does that work with older stuff?

clever mortar
#

Zigbee 3.0 is backwards compatible with Zigbee 1.2

forest edge
#

oh

clever mortar
#

Same deal as in the Z-Wave world

wet pilot
#

though in the zwave world + and non + "works" but isn't ideal

forest edge
#

fine, let me look on bangood, that's at least only a month delivery. lets see what they list

subtle pasture
#

@wet pilot From what i understand, it'll all work fine if you have a zwave+ dongle and a mix of zwave and zwave+ devices

#

But if you have an older dongle, you might have issues with zwave+ devices

clever mortar
#

Nah, it works both ways

#

But if you have a mixed mesh it falls back to non-plus

#

Same deal with Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0 - runs at 1.2

wet pilot
#

so "works" but not ideal

clever mortar
#

Like most of life 😄

static schooner
#

it's mostly a problem if you end up routing through an older device. If it's just older "leaf" devices, it's not as big a deal

forest edge
#

heh they make a zigbee hat for the rpi

#

apparently banggood is the suck for zigbee stuff. aside from sonoff they seem to have some deal with them lol

at the substation it might be 240v

But some areas have transformer for area which get 240 then divide.

shrewd oasis

Houses never get 240 direct. You have to be a factory or a port to get streaight higher

Sea ports here get 480 direct from the station then it’s divided at the port

Here we do 240 for older houses and 400 for anything after 95

yea substation will run 240 to the transformers on the pole then it splits out if you have those

yea substation will run 240 to the transformers on the pole then it splits out if you have those

@subtle pasture there's a difference between grid and what we perceive as our "electrical system"

#

to run power over great distances you have to run more than what you want

subtle pasture
#

I'm well aware

forest edge
#

don't remember what the drop off rate is

#

but we're still considered 120v and not 240v

#

unlike the psychos across the pond

deft pewter
#

In China? 😮

subtle pasture
#

Except the last run into your electrical panel delivers 240v if you ignore the center tap that's referenced to ground (aka "neutral")

deft pewter
#

No psychos across the Atlantic Pond.

shrewd oasis
#

And this 2 120v lines to my ac is what got me stumped with the Shelly.

#

I might just have to email them and see what they say.

#

And the other thing is that those lines are 10 gauge and shellys only fit 12 gauge. Don’t think going down to 12 then back up to 10 is a good idea

forest edge

any reason you are looking to hard cut the power for it?

@shrewd oasis using a shelly 2.5 won't work like you think it will. it will monitor and control each input independently

And docsis in 98/99

spark orchid
#

I didn't get DSL until 99...

clear ferry
#

Switched to DSL in 2001

#

Had dual 155mnit at college in 2003

spark orchid
#

Actually 01 sounds more accurate

clear ferry
#

And 10mbit fiber at home in 2004

#

Think we got 50/50 fiber in 2006

spark orchid
#

oooo, college... I have never been in a fiber area. I finally have 300/5 cable where I am at

clear ferry
#

Lol, most isps rolled out only fiber here from 2010ish

#

Could get 1000/1000 here since 2013

wet pilot
#

i have both 1ish G up/down fiber + 450/300 docsis running here

#

could up the docsis connection up to 1ish G up/down too but i'm keeping it as a backup

spark orchid
#

Our ISPs have fiber, until the switch station, then coax to the houses... The cable oligopoly has a strangle hold here

clear ferry
#

Landlines were stopped offered here almost a decade ago, fiber was the default roll out since late 00s, cable is only used in major metropolitan areas where they can't change

tame sand
#

I live next to munich.. and we have no fibre... sad life ...
we have docsis 400/100

#

its enough i guess... fiber would be nice though

spark orchid
#

I am fairly certain the new development behind mine has fiber from Spectrum, but my entire neighborhood is screwed unless someone wants to up their infrastructure game

clever mortar
#

At least in the UK they're rolling fibre out to almost everywhere

clear ferry
#

@tame sand I live in a farm county between 5 big farms in a 40 year old house 🤣

Lucky you 😅

Unlucky for his 5 neighbours.

tame sand
#

honestly... germany has a lot of problems somehow getting their internet upgraded.... we don't even have full 4g coverage

#

just because the providers don't want to share...

clear ferry
#

We have full 4g coverage even several km out to sea

tame sand
#

gonna move to norway then i guess 🤔

clear ferry
#

All providers both mobile and home internet are required to share here

#

By law

tame sand
#

they failed writing the legislation properly the first time

spark orchid
#

In the US, the providers are different, but have secretly agreed to screw everyone

tame sand
#

there is a rewrite planned for next year i hope

clear ferry
#

Like everything in the us then @spark orchid

spark orchid
#

yup

tame sand
#

lol

spark orchid
#

The wife wants to move the whole family to NZ

tame sand
#

but imagine working for one of the companies and not having mobile coverage.... that must suck 🤔 ... and just because you don't want others to have it

spark orchid
#

That sounds like us... Had a friend working for Verizon years back that had to use AT&T for cell service because his town, with its own Verizon store, had no coverage from Verizon

Random question Do you mount door sensors on the top or side?

clear ferry

In the top corner?

last plaza

I only wish they make magnetic door trim and a placeholder for door sensors

Top corner top or side? Trimmed side or indent side? Is it actually any standard

If it has a button for resetting, don't mount it such that that button is in an inside corner.

This is a pretty dumb question but if I get a mod bus hat for my raspberry pi, will I be able to access that hat from within home assistant if I do the right configuration settings

#

I don’t know where to ask that question because it’s very high-level and comes from my inexperience so I’m just throwing it out here

forest edge
#

that sucks, that magichome integration is cloud 🤢

bitter zinc
#

@forest edge is that integration actually being made?

forest edge
#

@bitter zinc already made but they are trying to get it into core which it is not

bitter zinc
#

So I can use it right now?

forest edge
#

if you know how to add a custom intergration you can try it, sure

bitter zinc
#

And how does it work?

#

Does it work better than the flux led one?

forest edge
#

no idea, not tried it yet. just found it today lol

bitter zinc
#

Lol I hope it’s better that would be great

forest edge
bitter zinc
#

Ok cool thanks

wet pilot

Anyone have a laptop with an and 4k cpu here that uses Linux?

Is it possible to have redundant home assistant instances? Or redundant z wave sticks?

wet pilot

Zwave devices can pair with one and only one controller

Anyone have a laptop with an and 4k cpu here that uses Linux?
@wet pilot I do

wet pilot
#

Which OS and does your audio work?

#

Ubuntu 20.10 with kernel 5.8.0 does not seem to want to work

last plaza
#

I have ubuntu 18.x LTS I think

wet pilot

Ah ok. Older kernel seems to not have audio issues from what I can tell

bitter zinc

Crap that sucks.

#

Can I have Z wave as an external container that’s used by both instances?

wet pilot
#

@last plaza kernel 5.8.15 in fedora 33 fixes it

I got my 6 ssds yesterday. 40GB Intel 320s. And got given 8x600GB disks to burn in my HBA and backplate with (have a 846 with a bad port on the backplate, but I don't think it is a bad port, either cable or controller issue).

#

Looks like my router gets here today too :)

#

The ssds are for opnsense, truenas and maybe proxmox boot (mirrored) otherwise I will have 2 spare

clear ferry
#

@storm summit psssh, it's 10c right now

@last cedar
proxmox 🤢 when you have no clue of proxmox anyway you could checkout openstack (I sugest the kolla project ) or truenas scale (alpha as F. but also fun)

clear ferry
#

Mmmm truenas <3

hearty depot
#

I have to redo my setup, but then with scale - because debian ❤️

clear ferry
#

I'm thinking of migrating from core to scale

#

But I love jails

hearty depot
#

no jails in scale?

clear ferry

Jails is a bsd thing , so 🤣

hearty depot
#

welp systemd-nspawn

clear ferry

Never even heard of, had to Google

I never used jails, but from what I read it sould be quite similar

but then, you loose the easy jail setup I guess

dusky plank

do you guys have some funny doorbell.wav laying around?

last cedar
#

@hearty depot I can check it out, I am actually thinking ESX, and run dockers in a VM. We will see!

hearty depot
#

scale will get out of alpha in a month, but to face it.. ESXi os just easy and it works, while the other 2 are a little fiddle

last cedar
#

Out of alpha...

#

Into beta 😂

hearty depot
#

reminds me.. Whats the HomeAssistant status.
It's not stable release yet afaik

clear ferry

  1. Suggests...... Not production worthy
clever mortar
#

HA itself is pretty stable IMO

#

Now, the integrations... 🤏 some less so than others

hearty depot
#

Betas almost always just working fine

clever mortar
#

I've personally not had any stability issues since ... somewhere around 0.4x

clear ferry
#

I've not had any since I started tbh

clever mortar

Most of my issues relate to zwave anyway

clever mortar

There's been a few point releases (usually a .0) that have had unexpected "features" for sure 😄

clear ferry
#

.0 is basically user beta

#

I never jump before .2 atleast

#

Or... Open beta would be a better term

hearty depot
#

still running 0.116.3

clever mortar
#

I usually wait for the next beta to be cut before upgrading... Went to 0.116 once the beta for 0.117 was cut. I'll do the same with 0.117

kind lantern
#

To be fair - I'm not sure I'd be so blasé if I included some stuff I'm aware you guys include in home assistant (home security in particular, but I guess general disaster management). But for people who just do basic stuff (elaborate dashboard with some presence automation around lights/temps etc...) should live on the edge more 😂

clear ferry

You'll love this @hearty depot I found a picture of me from the late 80s

Hey guys, I'm new to this community so I'm not sure if this the right way to ask this question but can anyone guide me in the right direction with my problem?

velvet horizonBOT
#

Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

I have the Smart Life SmartIR controllers for my ACs. I have installed the Tuya integration in Home Assistance but it doesn't show me the ACs. I looked a bit online and I found the "SmartIR" community component on a lot of threads. I installed the SmartIR components perfectly but even if I add my controllers manually with the correct device code and ip address for the controller data, it doesn't work.

Here's the custom component I'm talking about: https://github.com/smartHomeHub/SmartIR

Home Assistant Version: 0.117.4

@kind lantern - I'm with you. I generally upgrade within a day or so. I stop my container, rename it and spin up the new one. Sometimes I just let watchtower do it. Even if the container shits the bed, I can easily roll it back...
