gotta install the package before you can install the package
@odd kindle Not even Fedora?
gotta install the package before you can install the package
@last dirge
apk --update add openjdk8-jre
@subtle pasture no. I mean that “work” I guess, but I’m never happy with it. And I’ve been trying since ~1997
is oooold :(
@odd kindle The issue I have the Debian is that it gets crapped up with packages and old dependencies rather easily, and attempting to clean that up (or perform major upgrades) often breaks things.
Package management just seems to work a lot better on RPM based distros
Also, yum has that slick history-rollback/replay feature
I can somewhat agree. But with apt when I need to fix something I always can, rpm never does what I want it to do. And all the other little differences
In theory I’m sure that’s great. I’ve never really needed it
It keeps its own internal history of all package installations (and their dependencies) over time, and can undo anything from any point in the tree
I’m not trying to hate in RH, it’s just never been for me :/
So going back to history state 0 would put you back to clean install + user files
@odd kindle That's fair, I just haven't been able to recover/clean/upgrade anything Debian based to the same degree. lol
👀
I’m really curious about nix tho. Haven’t had time to try it out 😦
I had to try and fix a Ubuntu 10.04 server a couple days ago, wound up killing it just by running apt-get upgrade
Hosed GRUB, no boot devices found
@subtle pasture get where you’re coming from. I’ve just never had any really major problems with that. At worst you have to uninstall (a lot of things) and reinstall. Easy :p
When I finally did get it back up and running, apt had apparently crashed mid-upgrade, and had left the entire system in a dirty state with no further package management possible until repairs had been run. Fun stuff...
Granted 10.04 is ancient now, but yikes
Lol. Yeah. Back in the days Ubuntu wasn’t always great. I ran like Ubuntu 8.04 (or maybe even earlier) alpha on a home sever. Fun days 🙂
But Ubuntu lts have always served me well
Now everything lives in the cloud so I don’t do much severs, or Linux at all 😦
kernel 2.6 until the end of 3.x was not great
macos is my main os
When I was younger I even had a period of Gentoo. That was fun times 🙂 spending an entire day compiling Gnome.
Someone needs to tell me that I don’t have the time to buy a new small home-server 😐
You have loads of time, do it.
😦
I really don’t, that’s a problem.
When you don’t have the money you don’t have the time, when you have the money you don’t have the time
My partner would make me regret such a project.
Very nice 🙂
You'd have more time for projects if you just lose the partner 🤷♂️
@deft pewter No, not really :). It’s the kids that take up the time
Seems like there's an easy solution there too. Just don't put up a fight in the custody battle.
You'd have more time for projects if you just lose the partner 🤷♂️
that said, I wonder where atx lurks
You mean under which bridge?
@deft pewter so not an option tho.
Kids over server any day 🙂
exactly, under which bridge, puking at some random pi`s, drinking expensive whiskey and talking with stranger vpcs
That's a pretty mean thing to do insulting ||the troll like that||
They're usually very friendly and stays on their side of the mountain
i smell lies
Hey what's the best way to add Bluetooth to my homeassistnt? It's running on my home,e server as a VM and debating if a Bluetooth dongle passthrough is the best route or use the esp32 rout that I briefly read somewhere.

Anyone play rust?
I think about 7 other people do. I once saw the server at 8 people.
Wow... 62,536 players at some point today.
Of which 62,534 were bots
And KrAzIe still couldn't win a match.
any rocket fans here? spacex is getting ready to put the cone on top of the sn8 test starship - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky5l9ZxsG9M
you have to look away and look back 🙂
Ok. I'll check again in an hour.
itll be in space by then /s
Record it, then play it back at high speed
Unlikely. The crane might be going back up in a few hours.
I think I'd enjoy seeing a launch live... but YouTube? Especially the tedious stuff
there you go
there are like 4 cameras aimed at this thing
they're in Girl Mouth Texas?
lol, yes
is the cone resting on the ground now?
yeah
Might be resting on the ground again in a bit if they mess it up.
on the wheels they used to roll it from the manuf site
the cone is all payload?
all tanks
As someone that knows very little about spacecraft, I assume bagels aren't the food.
I'm still picturing a carb fuelled rocket though.
it goes really fast but then tires easily and quickly
um
'yes'
they'll test flight this once stacked, but then there is a super heavy booster this can/will ride on top of
so then the nose is payload
maybe eventually? i saw mention of a header tank in there right now
i think there still more changes to come to make it actually carry something
maybe the header tank is only a small portion
i know just enough to know im probably wrong 🙂
there ya go
looks like ultra heavy is supposed to have 23 engines?
holy shit
its a newer engine than what is on the falcon 9 too
for now, at least
right
the way they iterate ...who knows
the 15km hop is due in the next week i think
is anybody using manned SRB vehicles any more?
i think the russians and some ula may
maybe just ula actually
i think its an addon(tm)
Soyuz is kero isn't it?
or vodka
right
Hi all, i'm new here.
I'm in the process of cementing and running power to my front gate, I would like to run any cables I will need in the future for a gate camera and buzzer etc.
for that should i be running an ethernet cable too?
Cementing over a lawn? 🤢
cat7, do it
Unless the strings rot 😄
Use nylon, then it'll just melt 😛
👌
Anyway, skip cat7, go right to cat9 😛
no not cementing over a lawn... just build the fence, digging the conduit in and popping up through the cement under the gate motor.
built the fence*
That's okay then. I hate you a little bit less now.
lol
i have another question, and sorry for the newbiness. If i want to automate the gate via say a raspberry pi, does the pie go in my gate motor casing, or in my house and the ethernet just run outside, or it doesnt matter?
cat7, do it
@dusky plank u nasty
House
I mean, you could stick it locally, but there's likely to be no point and it may just complicate life
ok, understood.
so you'd just run thick wire in the conduit to gate @clever mortar ?
Well, if you're running mains voltage to the gate, that's the "thick" bit anyway
@hollow glacier I run HA on a pi, of course I'm nasty
right
Some network cable is irrelevant
so does that mean i need to run ethernet for the camera, what about for the button?
Maybe cable, maybe Zigbee
do eth and string for now is my vote
Plan to run a few cables
or does the ethernet send button press signal along with camera stream?
google: PoE
i have all my cameras running over poe.
Though, if you're putting power out there for the gate motor, you could run fibre instead of copper
ok maybe i need toi see what camera / button i will get and see what it requires specifically.
I'd probably suggest that solving this is better done on the forum
This is one of those "many moving parts" questions
Yup
figure out end goal
But there's likely a few dozen ways to skin this
Also...
The XY problem is asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem.
This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help.
The problem occurs when people get stuck on what they believe is the solution and are unable to step back and explain the issue in full.
slipped right on by us
Start with the goal, as @hollow glacier said, and work backwards
eats cookie
i dont think id do fibre just for that, seems excessive, i thought ethernet was me goinbg above and beyond wireless. for stability.
in my server i get to eat cookies if someone thanks me 😦
it does absolutely nothing
can anyone point me in the direction of a local diy Ring Doorbell alternative?
i went with the unifi doorbell
Or #cameras-archived if you want a camera in it 😉
it interfaces w/ hass nicely
thank @clever mortar
and saves local
ok @hollow glacier will check that out too, thanks
you don't want my solution
you'll need that if you do go unifi
@hollow glacier wow that looks beautiful.. re: unifi doorbell
@hollow glacier you have just the one doorbell though right? The rest ip cams?
looks great.
reminds me of my 18$ camera, will have to look out for the pumpkin express again
@hollow glacier so what powers your bell and cam? Both work through ethernet? And what happens when somebody presses the button?
PoE cams; doorbell existing wiring and had to add a transformer or w/e to the chime
doorbell is 2.4/5ghz wifi only
and button i dont have hass do anything with it yet
i have the unifi app pop up with a notif
right so button chimes inside.
ye
i think there's a bit more to it with digital chime
it's all outlined on their forums (ubiquiti's)
ok, hey thanks for the chat your bell and cam looks great will definitely look into it.
^^
Just saw conference channel, anywhere to find more information about dec 13 conference?
I don't think there's more information available than what's in the link in that channel description.
Also, the conference channel is probably the best channel to ask about the conference 🤷♂️
sometimes a smartass, but also sometimes justified 🙂
@hollow glacier take trash out. How's that created?
via hacs
Ty
ok... Im going to run home assistant core on my phone...
then ask for support about why its slow when its running inside a sandboxed app with an x86 JIT with alpine linux
on an iphone 😛
can we just make it into an APK?
we... could
Looks fine but plenty of space for other stuff
would be pretty slick actually to make HA run on modern phones with the correct specs. I wouldn't trust it's uptime reliability so much but to have the option to slap it on an old phone connected via wifi sitting in a closet would be hilarious
@forest edge frankly, I'm surprised no one has done it yet
yea it's certainly possible already and holy crap if it was "official" the headaches that would come from it lol
I seen some posts about it already, some with termux one with this crazy thing
https://github.com/nmilosev/anyfed
@clear ferry have you been having trouble starting your car in these cold times? https://patentyogi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/handcrank-o.gif
yeah @rotund sphinx what happened with my termux - HA on droid - suggestion?
You guys don't have wireless monitors?
not having wireless power is so 2019
Has there been any progress on that front at all? They're been talking about true wireless for years already.
There's a few trully wireless products
some christmas lights, a train track and so on
the train track is really cool
Do you have a link?
@deft pewter my very quick googling found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeNXRD8eziA&feature=emb_title

I love the marketing on the wi-charge site:
Work at room-sized distances and beyond without losing power as the distance grows.
They seem to have broken the inverse square rule.
i don‘t feel very comfortable with coils, much less with power in the air
Beaming it seems decent... but LoS as a requirement ruins it.
I seen those at CES. Shit looks like it's begging to be a tumor starter
A narrow beam of IR isn't going to do anyone much harm, especially if the targeting is decent.
I have a picture from CES probably 18 years ago now where they had a TV sitting on a plexiglass block about a foot from the wall
they were beaming power and full HD video to it
wireless power and HDMI
Kinda depressing we're still so far off that tech being mainstream
the more wireless crap they make the shittier shit becomes in my opinion.
I am starting to realize that I had a real life before I discovered HA
there is no spoon
This is one of the most enjoyables time sinks that I found so far. Super easy to get hooked. Soon I will have spent so much money on my house that I will have to life on the streets.
well you'll realize you could have settled for a quarter of the crap you bought just fine anyways
yes, probably 🙂
now that they did a borat sequel i feel like i need more ali g in my life
I'm looking forward to watching Borat Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan.
yea im wawtching it tonight after Live Rescue lol
wow my job isnt planning on having people back in offices before q2 2021
Mine was going to tell us to come back this quarter... until shit hit the fan again in the UK.
wow
We're on go to the office if you need to, either for personal or business reasons
Plenty of folks like being able to escape their single room flat...
wow indeed. There's zero reason for most of us to go to an office at all, let alone during a pandemic.
Yeah, home working isn't for everyone, I'll give you that.
my wife's organization decided to not renew their office space lease at the end of the year
I'm lucky, in that I have a dedicated home office
But those whose jobs allow it and who get on fine in isolation shouldn't be forced to return to an office.
ive been WFH for 6 years now and i love it
@shy comet same
This was my first time doing fulltime WFH and I love it. Wouldn't go back if I had the choice.
it was nice to occasionally go somewhere else and work for a while though
like a coffee shop
I get the impression I won't be asked what my preference is.
lol my occassional travel would be to the Mumbai office
but that aint happening for a while lol
Yeah, I'm happy to go into the office once a week or so, though I suspect I'll end up going in a couple of times a week in the end - when "normal" returns
i was supposed to go before shit hit the fan in February
but my wife was like are you kidding?
@deft pewter my hope is that some companies will begin to realzie the cost savings and how happy their employees are but the problem is that its not for everyone and very easy to abuse the trust in a WFH environment
personally i just make sure to respond ASAP to any email or slack message
As a software dev, my boss would soon know if I wasn't working... nothing would get done 😄
We, thankfully, are mostly on the if your job is getting done, we're not looking too closely at how
That's how it should be.
Yup
I think it's all down to finances. The businesses that are going WFH are doing it to save money.
My employer just signed new leases before Corona...
companies that trust their employees ❤️
They don't wanna admit it's a mistake, so they'll force us to use the space they're paying for.
Dear employer, we're off to somebody that allows WFH, kthx bai
Yeah, I can see that becoming a distinct possibility if enough other employers go WFH.
We have problems with hiring as it is. It'll only get harder when other places offer better benefits and work/life balance.
Even before this started we had staff that were 100% WFH anyway, just nominally attached to an office
In a few cases, their "local" office was many many hours away
Like the person working in deepest darkest Devon, based out of Bristol...
The bit that pisses me off the most... we have some 100% WFH too, and yet the execs tell us that we're an office-based company...
They talk like it's a blanket policy when there are no end of exceptions already.
The missus works for the same company and her entire department WFH... yet the line I keep hearing is that I'll have to return.
honestly q2 2021 is still pretty optimistic
it assumes that everyone will do the right thing until then which is impossible
because those were the same assumptions we had back in march, then may, and now october
@deft pewter dat micromanagement doe
What micromanagement?
that's why they want you in the office
My line manager trusts me. It's way higher than that.
They know the work's getting done as quickly now as it was pre-Corona.
they're trying to look busy
I can think of zero logical arguments for a return to offices for software development companies.
If some want to go, sure. I get how being at home all the time could get lonely.
The real kicker... we'll be forced to go back because they claim we need face-to-face meetings to be effective. One dude on my team is based 200 miles away. We never have face-to-face meetings.
im trying to figure out how to "pull" the temperature out of HA's defualt weather entity "weather.home" so that I can make a sensor to show outside air temperature... what channel should I ask that in?
Any that don't specifically state 'no support' in the topics 🤷♂️
@upper apex integrations
thanks for the helpful answer
👌
Haha. I've been having trouble with mine lately too. Started using the web client instead.
The main window of the native one occasionally freezes on me. Notifications keep coming through, no visible change on the UI.
@last dirge Heh, I have teams open all day. The only time there's much CPU usage is during video calls
My current highest-usage process is bouncing between Firefox and Discord, which kinda makes sense
Re: Work from home.
What's funny is, right before COVID hit, I was negotiating for more work-from-home days in my calendar. lol
Boss didn't want to give me more than my current "one day a week" schedule... not two weeks later, I'm 100% work from home
It really does feel like management either has A) trust issues, or B) feels like they have no purpose themselves when they can't micromanage people physically in an office space
Starting a pandemic is kinda drastic
It's all trust.
lol now costco has covid test kits
because you know having 50 on deck is what we all need right now
"oh you wnat to come in my house? please take this 15 minute test before i say yes"
@shy comet really ?
about costco? yea just got the email they want 150 lol
$3/test? That's not bad.
Free COVID testing at @shy comet's place
Shame your visitors have to stand outside in the rain for 15 minutes.
hahah
@deft pewter it actually sounded like it was for 1 test lol
i thought that testing and vaccine etc.. was supposed to be free for americans? 🤔
seems to only be that way if ur getting a medical operation since the test is included and has to be done before being admitted
Free healthcare for Americans? That'll be the day.
exactly why the boston tea party started
Lots of bosses like to see their employees, for control reasons I think.
I couldn't do my job remotely, but I wouldn't like being 100% remote either!
i remember wehn yahoo did their major shift a few years ago and had a ton of remote employees they came to find out how bad their employees were
Texan here on day 4 of no test results yet :/
peopel never logging into VPN for one
there may be hope for a nintendo switch integration 🙂 just found this while doing a search https://pypi.org/project/nxbt/ not a fan of the entire setup process though lol
I'm never NOT on the VPN
for some reason the infrastructure team routes everything over the VPN
rather than only the traffic that needs to get to the LAN
that was ... fun when everyone started working from home
Always tunnel VPNs caused a few problems at the start of WFH 😄
whats your VPN timeout at? or no timeout lol
no timeout
they switched off of Cisco hardware to something else
uses a client called GlobalConnect
sorry, GlobalProtect
that what we got lol
and we made the same switch ahah
i get kicked out like after 12-16 hours i think? maybe 24
@last dirge They likely tunnel everything so that their on-prem security appliance can monitor/protect all traffic
If they allowed regular web browsing to bypass the VPN, it blows a gaping hole in the security model they depend on for machines that have access to the company LAN
yea tell him
That said, cloud firewalls (with client software on the endpoint) are becoming a thing
i see brain just needs to accept and adapt
Pretty much. Running your firewall in the cloud means all of your remote workers can take advantage of the internet connectivity present in a datacenter somewhere, which is usually multi-gigabit
Tends to be easier and cheaper to go that route than to install the required internet connection on-prem
well i think he needs to make sure his go cart is charged and move forward with modern tech ... @last dirge
it is on-prem
but is go cart charged
always
I don't really care about the VPN
but I've almost always got an active DB connection that's running a local server against a remote DB
which is talkative
they tried to convince me that I should get rid of this laptop and use a Citrix VDI
I laughed at them
thats not right ..... sounds like your being a bully
sure, it makes far more sense for them to give me a crappy chromebook that does nothing but connect to a remote VDI
because I'm sure that's somehow cheaper
I mean... if they run Citrix on-prem, then the database, front-end server, and desktop, are all on the same network together
That would likely perform better and use less bandwidth
less bandwidth, yeah
but it'd be completely beholden to their network being available
which is spotty
Kinda sounds like you already are. Connection goes down, you can't connect to the database server
we must all get along
they were also saying that the VDI would be "cleaned" nightly and restored to how it was before I logged in
which makes zero sense for software development
cool, let me clone all of these git repos
daily
Strictly speaking, a lot of VDI solutions always boot up clean + re-attach your user profile (which would include your cloned git repos)
They work off of a pre-prepared base image (usually a Windows 10 VM) and boot up a fresh instance of that + a non-persistent differencing disk + a persistent user profile
Pretty cool tech, honestly. It even allows your entire session to be moved between physical servers without you noticing
that is what i am talking about ^^^^
we have a all citrix system, the mobile clients use f5 vpn or sth like that. i can‘t access my local net either with that
F5 is good shit
Citrix 🤢
damn is @clear ferry in here
Or rather, corporate it running Citrix and just wiping everyones profiles 🤮
influxdb2 here we go!
influx clients still compatible with influx2?
dunno
oh, this is really nice. Influx2 can generate your telegraf config and provide it form an endpoint. Allowing you to start telegraf like this: telegraf --config http://ip/api/v2/telegrafs/token
hello :)
Hello!
Hi, Inigo.
i didn't know that word, I googled it
Inigo derives from the Castilian rendering (Íñigo) of the medieval Basque name Eneko.[1] Ultimately, the name means "my little (love)".[2]
😳
is there a 6-fingered waving hand?
if there is then i want a one eyed , doritos shaped, emoji :)
so, how was that week ? anything fun ?
@scenic radish so yaml...
<The Princess Bride, btw>
Inconceivable!
that word, I don't think it means what you think it means...
@shy comet we need one of these trucks in LA Pronto 😆
wow where do they got that lol
Queens.
nice yea looks like NY food lol
Beef kebab, egg plant, rice, fries salad with white and red sauce.
ffs... trying to get the proxmox plugin to work with telegraf... keps giving me a weird error "Undefined but requested input"
well... the proxmox plugin was release 2 days ago with 1.16, I'm on 1.15
thanks for sharing
And... power is out again..
@shy comet sorry 😐 Figured someone might be interested in a proxmox plug for influx
Stop giving it weird requests
Well, it was because the proxmox plugin was so new 🙂
Well... my hobby has no power
Who would I bother about the banner on the merch store being broken?
(Tagging @shy comet because he's Mister Documentation and that's the closest I can think of to the store lol)
there is a merch store ?
umm
RIGHT?
there's a merch store?
LOL
Broken in what way? You are still using internet explorer?
It's a teespring
oh the shirt
seems unofficial
YOU KNOW WHAT I WAS CONNECTED TO MY WORK VPN maybe that was it
Edit: it wasn't me
It's official enough - https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2017/02/22/home-assistant-tshirts-have-arrived/
That guy needed a node red shirt
Nope, not my work filter, lol
Ah nice image
@polar walrus sent out a message to a few who should be able to look into that 🙂
Thanks dshokouhi! I figured you would know who was responsible for it, lol
lol no prob 🙂 BTW I may be tagging you in a future PR for widgets since my PR was just merged
Ha, sounds good
Rainbow mug ... White/Blue mug ... Rainbow mug ... White/Blue mug .... ARRRF !
HA is going to probably get me to use Microsoft’s game streaming service
@fiery sorrel clearly they need to get a color-changing mug where the logo goes from white/blue to rainbow
that would be awesome!
not that i need another mug ... 15+ is enought ... but i mean Home assistant mug !
maybe you can add a rfid tag under it to make automate your coffe time
i need to plug my mir:ror back into something ...

Are they wearing bike sprockets?
I have no idea what they are.
All I know is the music is catchy, their voices are amazing and they're not too bad looking either.
Their sound reminds me of Myst Revelation
they have hairy armpits tho..
Did emoticons and avatars suddenly disappear for everyone or just for me?

Ah, Discord be broken again
I've had that happen before, some things load, some don't - whatever node you're connected to is FUBAR
Like when you upload an image, and the app won't show it, but if you click on it it shows fine in the browser...
@low harness those do appear to be sprockets

@forest edge again, strange
Woo, cores
@tidal bronze the world outside of veggifornia must be very mysterious and confusing to you lol
Why you checking pits
@subtle pasture how do you get it to show the cores?
right click on the diagram
Yeah, that makes it show cores + threads
I've only got 4 cores on this laptop
@tidal bronze if you weren't so damn hippie you would have noticed it too
she's unhappy too
Always weird how Windows shows "@ 3GHz" when the chip is OCed and boosts to 4.5 GHz...
it shows 4.2 ghz 🤔
@forest edge why would I look for that. Too much time in your hands buddy.
@dusky plank It ramps up and down based on load, per-core
It spends most of its time at 1.6 GHz
now you are being strange, or you just go through life with your eyes closed lol @tidal bronze
do you want to burn energy when theres no need? load all those cores and enjoy some throttling?
Oh, it won't throttle under load :3
@forest edge always eyes closed. If it doesn't change my dinner menu, couldn't care less.
if i ate what you ate i would want my eyes closed too
Epic. Lmao.
Much airflow, very heatsink
Me likey. RTX 2070.
@subtle pasture that's too much gpu for solitaire
This case had 8x 3.5" bays in the front
Drilled out the rivets and removed the drive cage, no need

Yeah, I actually use the 5.25" bays, is the thing...
for what?
Optical drive and SATA hot swap bay

@deft pewter retractable drink holder
mine has a cassette player
They actually get used pretty regularly. Gotta be able to rip those BluRays

i have this rarity.. intel i7 with amd graphics on a single „die“
I mean, Brian here did just bring up newsgroups
my case has 5.25 bays but there's no openings in the front panel for them
Which is some ancient tech
so...
@subtle pasture is it a 1x caddy?
wonder how much of the internet's bandwidth is spent transferring nzbs
@tidal bronze The hot-swap bay? Caddieless 3.5"
@last dirge don't think its much, at least now.
news groups are still live and happy
I mostly use it to store full system image backups of my three SSDs
Which Veeam then dutifully replicates to my NAS
now we're going supra nerdy
Local backup + replicate is actually a lot faster than backing up directly to the NAS, because Veeam can do the deduplication and collapse without going over the network
Why Veeam sounds needy to you ?
wonder how much of the internet's bandwidth is spent transferring nzbs
@last dirge I thought most of it was spam emails?
@forest edge being here pretty much puts you in the 1% already don't you think?
Ah, video streaming apparently overtook that a long time ago already.
@odd kindle I go find something to eat when the pocket protectors start to blind people with the light reflecting glare
I don't even know what that means 😐
What's the deal with all these Spotify "sleepy head" Playlists ?

@tidal bronze Immediately thought of this...
Everything sounds the same or do I fall asleep too quickly 🤣
I have just started reading HA GitHub
I was like having a lot of love for the project after spending weeks learning a lot about it and now I am heartbroken
I've just realized how old that song is... and that the official video is only 360p
This is sad.
So what's the verdict on moviefilm deux ?
"Wow, some seriously retro effects on this video"
checks the quality and the date
"Oh... it just is that old..."
@dark oasis Wait, what's sad?
The tone in this issue, for example: https://github.com/home-assistant/architecture/issues/401
@dark oasis this is very suspicious
I was getting intrigued and thinking about collaborating one day, but I am honestly very pissed off by the responses to several PRs
what is suspicious, @fathom sparrow ?
You posting this after an episode from another gentleman not so long ago
I joined to learn more about HA. But saw a discussion on #449717345808547842 regarding the position on YAML and went to check the GH issues
Exactly
Yeah, that made me look into GH
Are you the same person?
Er... no? Why would someone do that?
It was requested multiple times to that person not to bring it up. It’s been beaten to death
This isn't even the developers communication channel, AFAIK
humf, I have been talking about the tone, btw, not the YAML issue (which I also share the other user POV, to be honest, but I will not dig into that)
You can search my nickname to ensure that I am a real person in case you doubt
I do not know if the other nickname is traceable
This topic has been going on for months. The project has chosen a direction.
Maybe take this somewhere else? People were having non-HA related chats in the non-HA related channel 😐
Yeah, I will not dig into the YAML issue
Lounge is for shitposting.
I was just saying that it is a little bit sad how the interactions are
Yaml is not going away, only for specific integration types. That’s it.
Oh, I though #the-water-cooler was for random, non-serious talk
I created an integration that was approved last week, yaml only. So please, do not perpetuate the BS that people do not understand.
@fathom sparrow bit testy, eh?
Yeah I am. I asked the gentleman to stop, along with 3 other mods. That does not give anyone the right to start the convo back up in another channel.
I will limit myself to just technical questions and contributions then
I am not the other guy and I am not talking about the same thing
But I understand there is no room to talk about the project status and it is better to limit oneself to technical questions and responses
I think you're going to have to be less subtle, petro 😄
It’s not that. It’s that this topic is sorely misunderstood and always leads to arguments
Every time.
🍿
I blame @subtle pasture for this personally, nerd talk always ultimately ends up as nerd rage. good going there 🙄
???
|| was a joke ||
I will throw cute catgirl gifs at you, so help me
I suppose I did ask what was wrong, initially. My bad 😛
Epic stuff. Not even Hollywood could script this
Everyone is a Gladiator behind a keyboard.
Where was I, sleepy head Spotify Playlists 😴
@subtle pasture see what happens when you ask questions. 😆
lol, goes away to config some broken telegraf and miss all the action. The catgirl was cute tho.
I have iron fingers, when I type it’s super intimidating. I swear
@fathom sparrow make sure to have cherry <whatever color it is that clicks extra loud> as well
@fathom sparrow Mechanical keyboard gang, represent
O to 30000 ft and the drama erupts.
I've had people tell me they could tell I was busy down the hall from my office, because they could hear the typing. lol
spends waaay to much time browsing keyboards and accessories
@subtle pasture pretty sure you gave a very high ambient noise level at home
lol packard bell keyboards
@odd kindle I have the opposite problem. I've found basically my personal "perfect keyboard," and if they ever stop producing it I don't know what I'll do 😭
stockpile
@subtle pasture well, to be honest it's more keycaps and, is it called mousepads?
@forest edge good old days.
"this is my keyboard closet..."
https://codekeyboards.com/
This guy, specifically the "Cherry MX Clear" switch version. I bought one for home and another for work. lol
@tidal bronze they were quality made for sure lol
They come rebranded as mechanical now. Put 2 leds and shits hype
BUT I LIKE MY YAML FILES!
I suppose if they ever stop making CODE 104's, I could try a Unicomp
Legit buckling spring switches 😮
@forest edge did you checkout borat 2
@subtle pasture must be nice to be able to have your own office tho, I have quiet keyboards out of respect for my coworkers at work 😐
I mean, MX Clears aren't even the loudest switches
That honor goes to blues/greens
Clears are browns, with stiffer springs
@tidal bronze no not yet. that dude is weird lol
@tidal bronze is it available on netflix or some other streaming service?
Amazon.
So, which MX caps are now the quiest?
Red / black
@tidal bronze adjusting shirt or groping self?
oh! we got amazon here some time back. Then I can watch it
However, MX Red and MX Black switches are linear
They don't have a tactile bump/click on actuation, so they're generally considered better for gaming and poorer for typing
I got red keys, but wouldn't say that they're quiet
But I have to say that they are very comfortable to type
@fathom sparrow starting to watch now.
I haven’t seen it but it’s been the topic at work
I hate loud keys, I#m grateful for my airpods pro but if I forget them @ home I will throw my chair at you. thankfully everyone is in home office now
Borat made a response video due to the popularity of that one scene
Every time I try to type on Red or Black switches, I bottom out the keys because they don't have any feedback on actuation 😬
Which, yeah, makes typing rather loud
@fathom sparrow heard about it
browns/clears/blues/greens, you can tell when the switch actuates before it bottoms out, which I personally like
I added some.. condom... Rings ? Under the keycaps - hoped more but I mean it's ok
erh... some what now?
They go around the base of each switch, and make bottoming-out less audible
Where is @atxbyea?
Putting on condom rings
ona dark site
They are a little condomY likely :D
It’s like that time I said pizza dust when I was a teenager
Perfectly fine, I know what you mean :D
gives up on stupid stupid Proxmox and Telegraf and goes to forget this day instead
atx has been mia a couple of days I think
Oof, proxmox...
Go open stack!
Hyper-V Server is free, btw... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-hyper-v-server-2019
ESXi is also free...
You lol probably hate your days even more but it's quite a nice feeling getting it fone
@subtle pasture it's not proxmox in itself that is acting up atm, it's the telegraf plug for it.
But I'm giving up on it for today
Doesn't OpenStack still require 3 nodes minimum infrastructure?
Nah
It's meant to run on multiple racks of servers in huge clusters
Little bit weird getting it going in a homelab
True, you can do that too but single node deployment is out there and even lined out in the docks
Last time I checked, the "single node deployment" was still 3 nodes.. but they virtualized two of them
So your base configuration is already a physical host running two VMs
whats the reason you can run hyperv or any other vm on windows though? I don't get it, and is WSL depending on hyperv? never looked into that...
anyway 🤢
@dusky plank WSL1 doesn't depend on HyperV. WSL2 does.
There are lot of "projects" I think you refere to packstsck. You could also use devstack, personally I run kolla
WSL1 runs Linux syscalls directly on the NT kernel (GNU + NT), WSL2 spins up a small virtual machine along side Windows, where a full Linux kernel runs
so yeah, it's essentially just like any other vm but this time you call it smol
still no reason why other hypervisors don't run with hyperv enabled
@dusky plank I mean, it is small, and a single kernel instance can be shared amongst other VMs and containers, shrinking their footprints
@subtle pasture wait, why don't you like Proxmox?
@dusky plank You can run virtualization nested inside of Hyper-V, actually
this is like a whole layer of complexity on top of simple thinking
When you enable Hyper-V, your base Windows install is turned into a special class of virtual machine. Just having Hyper-V enabled puts everything you do inside a VM
So when you have Hyper-V enabled, and spin up a WSL2 instance, Windows and Linux literally run side-by-side, not one on top of the other
so that's maybe why you can't pass through things
Yeah, most host hardware is passed to the "parent" Windows install by default
Which is why it feels almost identical to a native install, in spite of now being a VM
it's still the NT kernel that takes over the host I believe? makes no sense to me
seems like somewhere down the road they will hit a dead end, but maybe thats just my thinking
NT kernel runs on top of Hyper-V
at this point you can just use a regular small hypervisor to run your NT kernel and linux kernel
That's what Hyper-V is, lol
yeah, with conditions though
?
It's a hypervisor that runs guest operating systems and containers. It's actually incredibly similar to how Proxmox is set up, which relies on KVM to do the same thing
yea but you can actually assign hardware to wherever you need them
You can pass network interfaces, PCIe devices, and USB devices, directly to virtual machines, yes
Same thing that ESXi and Proxmox let you do
I feel as though we are losing lounge..
proxmox is just a mashup for kvm with a UI. horribly done but works
I did mention its dependency on KVM above, yeah
I actually seen a proxmox server in a production environment, but to be fair, in a university
nasty
@odd kindle I have a number of reasons for avoiding Proxmox. The poor industry support, poor documentation, and the fact that it's not an embedded OS, being chief among them
Poor industry support is a big one. I can't rely on any standard tools to work with a Proxmox install. There's almost no support for backup software of any kind...
Also, I'll never deploy it for work... ever... so even fewer reasons to learn it
would you deplpy kvm?
Depends on what we're talking about running
Most small businesses do fine with a single ESXi or Hyper-V host
arent a bunch of smb's going to AAD and just not having much on prem?
I'm more likely to deploy XenServer than Proxmox, at this point
But when you're running a business, is it possible that ESXi isn't free anymore?
@hollow glacier That's been a slow migration. Lots of companies still rely on line-of-business applications that cost too much to move to the cloud
So they just keep their on-prem servers, running AD domain controllers and whatever else they need
yeah
i'd always heard proxmox was just debian with a gui and some tools
so didnt expect it to replace enterprise hypervisors
@midnight adder Well yeah, and if you need 2+ nodes for uptime / redundancy, then you need a vSphere license of some kind to run vCenter
vmware locking vcenter behind a paywall sucks hard for learning :/
and all the hardware necessary to really learn and play with esxi + vcenter
Have one of these suckers at work.
The pricing change hit us bad
@hollow glacier A VMUG membership is only $200 a year, and includes licenses for all VMWare products
Says it includes vSphere 7 licenses, which should include vCenter
I mean VMware isn't oracle
Worth mentioning Hyper-V's free version supports clustering, so no licensing needed just to set up an HA/failover cluster in your homelab 😛
Microsoft probably has the most feature-complete free hypervisor amongst paid hypervisors
But but Microsoft 🤢
yeah but that
That honor used to go to XenServer, but they screwed up their free version massively
https://store.ui.com/collections/early-access/products/unifi-protect-g3-instant-camera-beta i ordered one of these today
hyperv should just die
$29 1080p cam..
Not my fault Microsoft has a free hypervisor with more features and better hardware compatibility than ESXi free 🤷♀️

Soo.. Edward Snowdon is a Russian now
Nothing else interesting on my timeline for now... Sad but it's getting late here in Europe 👋
@tidal bronze how the hell did they film and release borat 2 so fast?
editors in home office
@forest edge Damn, that was fast... released directly to Amazon Prime Video, as well
ali g doesn't give a damn
@forest edge now you know.
@subtle pasture cool shoes.
Out of curiosity has anyone got the Reolink Argus 2 working? I’ve got a few of their POE cameras, but am trying to avoid running more CAT6, because the locations are hard to get to in the attic.
Amish exercise https://youtu.be/hZL7TqSeDus
Where do people here find out about everyone's new creative ideas involving home assistant?
Hi people. I need some honest advice, I used to install home automation C4/RTI mostly but have no coding experience. I was looking at tinkering with a Fibaro HC3 when I was told that HA is so much better. The more I look into the product the more it scares me out of using it. I guess my question is, with no experience with coding should I even be considering using this product? I just want some simple integration, lights, alarm, thermostat. Is this program simple enough to install and start adding items too? TIA for even reading this 😊
@subtle pasture hm, so you'd vote for ESXi for home then?
ESXi is usually my first choice, if possible
The hardware requirements are more-strict that most other hypervisors, though
lol 🙂 you're answering me after I've gone to bed and you're up when I go up
proxmox fit very well with what I wanted a year back or so and I've been very happy with it. But I do agree with broken backups
It's a Friday night, I can stay up late, lol
@prisma cape Coding isn't required. A lot can be done in the UI, and there's even external options for UI based automation (see #node-red-archived). Not everything is UI though, but honestly... if you're willing to learn you'll be fine
Only folks I see struggling are those who just want spoon fed answers
Oh, and I'd argue that YAML isn't coding - it's just a configuration file, not actual "go write some Python"
If in doubt, throw it in a VM and play around for a while, there's a lot you can do without connecting to any hardware
Yeah, never had a problem with YAML. It's the darn jinja templates that always take me a while to get right
Most of my non-trivial templating has come from the work of others...
@subtle pasture us then I take it 🙂
Yeah
random thinking of a tired soul. Why is scenes entity ids named in a good way but not scripts
I decided a while back that I'd see how far I could get with only the admin ui. Atm I'm doing everything from there. Except for a couple of old scripts I have that are doing very specific things
There's also hacs that will provide lots of added integrations if you're missing anything
is discord messing with me? no infrastructure in sight
so hard that it's showing you the categories!
@clever mortar thanks for the reply! Much appreciated
Tinkerer is away for 50m 23s with a message :point_right: Ok, who dropped the whale?
@dusky plank I can see Infra, weird
Do you guys use settings -> helpers or configuration.yaml for adding new helpers? Can't decide what to use.
Yes we do use settings / helpers or configuration.yaml for adding new helpers.
@tacit tapir dosen't matter, both work the same way
Only santa has helpers
Gonna be cold as shit here on Halloween night lol
Are people actually going to be out on Halloween night?
in civilized countries, yes
Could you name a civilised country that goes trick or treating and doesn't have massive rates of Coronavirus infection?
Ireland
Given they just imposed lockdown again, I doubt it.
i dont know any "civilised countries"
you obviously never been to North Korea then ||lol||
been within 30 meters
but look at spelling ...that was my joke .....although i cant spell good either
well actually less than that ....i have been in the 'no zone room" which is the border and both countrys occupy and the only place for ordered for true no fire zone
@dull chasm bet that was fun lol
Hey everyone! 👋
@deft pewter yes the dmz .... i spent 10 years in and out of south korea ...most from the 38th parrell
@forest edge actually its kinda cool but very tense place ....kutusa's (south korean solders) and north korean soldiers accopy the room 24/7
should have lit a firecracker
can‘t they play uno or sth? must be a boring job
@forest edge so when do you leave to go trick or treating?
@tidal bronze 👋 sorry i been absent beeen working way to many hours ...seeing society at its worst is draining
i do over and over but stand near the lines and be cussed at over and over gets to ya
I hear you. As with anything I like to believe it's a phase. Comes and goes.
i hope so .....its the younger folks ...so i pray its not the new mentality
Pretty sure our parents thought the same way 😆
i really do hope ...
@tidal bronze as soon as you go into the bathroom and give your boss the finger
Wowza that turned south pretty quick
a guy was beaten because he was wearing a shirt that said ...... i stand for the flag and knell for the cross....he was just walking down the sidewalk ....its hard for me to understand that type of anger
hulk smash
?
in this country nothing is "shocking" or "surprising" when it comes to people's attitudes and choices lol
Plus with everything that's going on takes very little to blow a gasket
well i dont understand that ...i am very catholic and old fashioned ....i see things i dont agree with and/or dont like but i am not even going to say anything to ya much less beat ya
some people just want to watch the world burn, that was a line in a movie but it's very true
I agree.
some people are also too stupid to see the effects of a burning world
I guess it will be 2022 summer when things get back to somewhat normal.
I dunno, cali is probably more slated for 2042
Lol. Don't you worry about Cali, it will be just fine.
people posting videos of the skies in colorado from the fires.. shit is weird lol
imagine all the hemp going up in flames and all those hippies crying over it
What's up in Colorado?
there are wildfires in colorado now
Oh 🙄
gibe link
this year really is turning into a sign of the apocalypse lol
we austrians live in forest cities, you know
@forest edge you can say that again. 😆
eons ago we use to take steps to limit the chances of such fires, but then mcdonalds came around and well.. it's too much work to get off the couch
isnt it keto ' donalds out west ...green leafs to pick instead of patty
Does anyone know of a z wave power measuring smart plug that works well for them? I want to be able to trigger automations based on my Apple Watch being placed on the charger.
prolly would get better answers in #zwave-archived @bitter zinc
Ok thanks

hello :)
Quick question, How do you call the oposite of a radio select list ?
I am looking for something like that to select multiple thing in a list, but without the right word, result are sparsed.
HTML forms have names for those things 😉
aside off "checkbox" i didn't find how list like that are caled sadly
@fiery sorrel in html a checkbox allows for multiple selections, a radiobox only one
ok that is the name i've use for my search but came out empty handed :(
thank you anyway, i'll keep looking around the forum for "checkbox" list
yup can't find any cutome integration or lovelace ui trick to have a checkbox list on the forum, i'll make my own thing :)
You call that a combobox
@forest edge a fieldset is a good thing to wrap them in yes, but not always needed
@fiery sorrel #frontend-archived
@forest edge sorry?
ops
So I wonder if I should get another ssd and play around with esxi a bit
nah, just boost this server
Shelly wants 12 bucks to ship an 8 buck accessory through USPS. I'm sorry.. what in the actual fuck.
ffs... parents and reading. I have a small raspberrypi setup at their place for some backup. It's not responding, I asked them if they'd accidentally turned it off. They respond with a photo of it and saying "It's blinking, we'll restart it" They have no other way but to pull out the power for it to restart... that's not ideal for a raspberry pi. I've told them that many times
@odd kindle hook up a push button restart using the gpio pins. that is crazy simple. I even used one of those breadboard buttons and glued it to the top of the case lol
That's actually a good idea. But it's been really stable. It's not needed a restart for a year. Except for when they've accidentally just unplugged it.
What have happened a few times is their external IP changing
So I acked what https://api.my-ip.io gave them, they responeded "Ok"
What's my IP? MyIP provides a blisteringly simple HTTP based API you can call.
I used an old rpib as a vpn at my mothers once, setup a button that would reboot it and had various scripts that would update the ip and even reboot the pi every so often just to refresh things. worked flawlessly for quite some time
@odd kindle why not just setup ddns and a docker container (add on) to update cloudflare or whatever with new wan ip? Domain names be cheap
CHIP?!
@hollow glacier sure. But that does take some time
Yes, it does
Maybe
No
Compared to walking through parents do anything
It just doesn’t. Anything computer related takes more than 20 minutes
I should have set up ddns from the start, but I was sure they had a static IP.
But, this was also something I spent as little time as possible on to see if it actually would work ok. Even spending 1h in ddns (nothing takes only 20 minutes in reality) would have been to much time
Yeah I hear you
But you quoting how long it takes you to do it doesn’t mean that’s how long it needs to take 🤐
😘
I’m sure I could set it up in 10 minutes. But in the end it’ll have taken an hour.
These days I drop a VPN client on the remote devices, and have them VPN back home. Solves all sorts of remote access issues 😉
_is rather used to estimating development. _
_is rather used to estimating development. _
You say that like noone else here is.
🤣
You should always add 20% and then multiply by 3 to get a decent estimate
Then you don't do enough 😉
You're on a server full of devs and dev ops types.
@deft pewter I’m sure all are
My internal estimate of time required is usually within 10%
My public estimate is significantly higher
My private estimate is usually between 1.5 and 2 times
@clever mortar that’s actually a good idea. WireGuard ftw
PiVPN is almost impossible to set up wrong
@deft pewter but I’m taking about myself here.
Exactly. Which is why Hmoney is spot on:
But you quoting how long it takes you to do it doesn’t mean that’s how long it needs to take 🤐
@clever mortar I don’t really want it to exist on my local network tho. The entire idea is for it to be disconnected from any hacking
I could estimate that it would take me 6 hours and my estimate might be accurate... it's still longer than it needs to take.
Can we start the air gap conversation back up if we're talking about making things 100% secure? 😄
If in doubt, get an expert to do it
If you're the expert, you've done something wrong, or right
Well, getting an expert to do it costs a lot more. The fact that it’s a raspberry pi should give you and indication of my budget
Imho what I’ve done works very well and have been very solid for at least a year. With the small catch that when I did it I believed my parents had a static IP.
as long as you dont use pptp 🤷♂️
oh and punching ssh tunnels for a single client takes ~2‘ and has the same effect
That’s what I’m doing now, ssh not pptp
Yes
wait before i do the machine has 512mb of ram
will that be fine or do i have to upgrade
also 40gb of storage
I ran debian just fine on way less than 512mb back in the days.
will try thanks!
but it all depends on what you're going to do with it
I swear the more they say people need to wear masks on the news the more people go out and don't in spite. Like those dogs who chew your shoes lol
We've not been doing masks at all here, stupid thing is that I think most would use them if gov just told us to
fax
also sorry to ping @odd kindle do you still think that woudl be enough?
im installing debiannow
brb
Nowdays I mostly do Alpine for simple setups, but that's just me
but debian is the only official one supported right?
If you're using #330944238910963714 yes
Generally speaking, most folks here know Debian if you need help with it. Many guides you find will be Debian based.
