@last dirge smart

brisk glen

apk --update add openjdk8-jre

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture no. I mean that “work” I guess, but I’m never happy with it. And I’ve been trying since ~1997

inner lava
#

apk --update add openjdk8-jre
@brisk glen oh wow, thx

#

Why so “weird” tho...

odd kindle
#

is oooold :(

subtle pasture
#

@odd kindle The issue I have the Debian is that it gets crapped up with packages and old dependencies rather easily, and attempting to clean that up (or perform major upgrades) often breaks things.

#

Package management just seems to work a lot better on RPM based distros

#

Also, yum has that slick history-rollback/replay feature

odd kindle
#

I can somewhat agree. But with apt when I need to fix something I always can, rpm never does what I want it to do. And all the other little differences

subtle pasture
#

I've had the exact opposite experience...

#

yum can roll back literally anything

odd kindle
#

In theory I’m sure that’s great. I’ve never really needed it

subtle pasture
#

It keeps its own internal history of all package installations (and their dependencies) over time, and can undo anything from any point in the tree

odd kindle
#

I’m not trying to hate in RH, it’s just never been for me :/

subtle pasture
#

So going back to history state 0 would put you back to clean install + user files

#

@odd kindle That's fair, I just haven't been able to recover/clean/upgrade anything Debian based to the same degree. lol

inner lava
odd kindle
#

I’m really curious about nix tho. Haven’t had time to try it out 😦

subtle pasture
#

I had to try and fix a Ubuntu 10.04 server a couple days ago, wound up killing it just by running apt-get upgrade

#

Hosed GRUB, no boot devices found

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture get where you’re coming from. I’ve just never had any really major problems with that. At worst you have to uninstall (a lot of things) and reinstall. Easy :p

subtle pasture
#

When I finally did get it back up and running, apt had apparently crashed mid-upgrade, and had left the entire system in a dirty state with no further package management possible until repairs had been run. Fun stuff...

#

Granted 10.04 is ancient now, but yikes

odd kindle
#

Lol. Yeah. Back in the days Ubuntu wasn’t always great. I ran like Ubuntu 8.04 (or maybe even earlier) alpha on a home sever. Fun days 🙂

#

But Ubuntu lts have always served me well

#

Now everything lives in the cloud so I don’t do much severs, or Linux at all 😦

dusky plank
#

kernel 2.6 until the end of 3.x was not great

odd kindle
#

macos is my main os

#

When I was younger I even had a period of Gentoo. That was fun times 🙂 spending an entire day compiling Gnome.

#

Someone needs to tell me that I don’t have the time to buy a new small home-server 😐

deft pewter
#

You have loads of time, do it.

odd kindle
#

😦

#

I really don’t, that’s a problem.

#

When you don’t have the money you don’t have the time, when you have the money you don’t have the time

#

My partner would make me regret such a project.

deft pewter

odd kindle

@deft pewter No, not really :). It’s the kids that take up the time

deft pewter

Seems like there's an easy solution there too. Just don't put up a fight in the custody battle.

dusky plank

summer mantle
#

Hi all, i'm new here.

#

I'm in the process of cementing and running power to my front gate, I would like to run any cables I will need in the future for a gate camera and buzzer etc.

#

for that should i be running an ethernet cable too?

deft pewter
#

Cementing over a lawn? 🤢

clever mortar
#

Run conduit, run pull string(s)

#

Then you can run whatever you need later

dusky plank
#

cat7, do it

deft pewter
#

Unless the strings rot 😄

clever mortar
#

Use nylon, then it'll just melt 😛

deft pewter
#

👌

clever mortar
#

Anyway, skip cat7, go right to cat9 😛

summer mantle
#

no not cementing over a lawn... just build the fence, digging the conduit in and popping up through the cement under the gate motor.

#

built the fence*

deft pewter
#

That's okay then. I hate you a little bit less now.

summer mantle
#

lol

#

i have another question, and sorry for the newbiness. If i want to automate the gate via say a raspberry pi, does the pie go in my gate motor casing, or in my house and the ethernet just run outside, or it doesnt matter?

hollow glacier
#

cat7, do it
@dusky plank u nasty

clever mortar
#

House

#

I mean, you could stick it locally, but there's likely to be no point and it may just complicate life

summer mantle
#

ok, understood.

hollow glacier
#

so you'd just run thick wire in the conduit to gate @clever mortar ?

clever mortar
#

Well, if you're running mains voltage to the gate, that's the "thick" bit anyway

dusky plank
#

@hollow glacier I run HA on a pi, of course I'm nasty

hollow glacier
#

right

clever mortar
#

Some network cable is irrelevant

summer mantle
#

so does that mean i need to run ethernet for the camera, what about for the button?

clever mortar
#

Maybe cable, maybe Zigbee

hollow glacier
#

do eth and string for now is my vote

clever mortar
#

Plan to run a few cables

summer mantle
#

or does the ethernet send button press signal along with camera stream?

clever mortar
#

🤷

#

Depends on your camera/button/whatever

dusky plank
#

google: PoE

summer mantle
#

i have all my cameras running over poe.

clever mortar
#

Though, if you're putting power out there for the gate motor, you could run fibre instead of copper

summer mantle
#

ok maybe i need toi see what camera / button i will get and see what it requires specifically.

clever mortar
#

I'd probably suggest that solving this is better done on the forum

This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help.

The problem occurs when people get stuck on what they believe is the solution and are unable to step back and explain the issue in full.

@hollow glacier so what powers your bell and cam? Both work through ethernet? And what happens when somebody presses the button?

hollow glacier

PoE cams; doorbell existing wiring and had to add a transformer or w/e to the chime

#

doorbell is 2.4/5ghz wifi only

#

and button i dont have hass do anything with it yet

#

i have the unifi app pop up with a notif

shy comet
#

i was supposed to go before shit hit the fan in February

#

but my wife was like are you kidding?

#

@deft pewter my hope is that some companies will begin to realzie the cost savings and how happy their employees are but the problem is that its not for everyone and very easy to abuse the trust in a WFH environment

#

personally i just make sure to respond ASAP to any email or slack message

deft pewter

deft pewter
#

That's how it should be.

clever mortar
#

Yup

shy comet
#

lol

#

@clever mortar isnt that the best motto?

deft pewter
#

I think it's all down to finances. The businesses that are going WFH are doing it to save money.

#

My employer just signed new leases before Corona...

shy comet
#

companies that trust their employees ❤️

deft pewter
#

They don't wanna admit it's a mistake, so they'll force us to use the space they're paying for.

clever mortar
#

Dear employer, we're off to somebody that allows WFH, kthx bai

deft pewter
#

Yeah, I can see that becoming a distinct possibility if enough other employers go WFH.

#

We have problems with hiring as it is. It'll only get harder when other places offer better benefits and work/life balance.

clever mortar
#

Even before this started we had staff that were 100% WFH anyway, just nominally attached to an office

#

In a few cases, their "local" office was many many hours away

#

Like the person working in deepest darkest Devon, based out of Bristol...

deft pewter
#

The bit that pisses me off the most... we have some 100% WFH too, and yet the execs tell us that we're an office-based company...

#

They talk like it's a blanket policy when there are no end of exceptions already.

#

The missus works for the same company and her entire department WFH... yet the line I keep hearing is that I'll have to return.

shy comet
#

honestly q2 2021 is still pretty optimistic

#

it assumes that everyone will do the right thing until then which is impossible

#

because those were the same assumptions we had back in march, then may, and now october

last dirge
#

@deft pewter dat micromanagement doe

deft pewter
#

What micromanagement?

last dirge
#

that's why they want you in the office

deft pewter
#

My line manager trusts me. It's way higher than that.

#

They know the work's getting done as quickly now as it was pre-Corona.

last dirge
#

they're trying to look busy

deft pewter
#

I can think of zero logical arguments for a return to offices for software development companies.

#

If some want to go, sure. I get how being at home all the time could get lonely.

#

The real kicker... we'll be forced to go back because they claim we need face-to-face meetings to be effective. One dude on my team is based 200 miles away. We never have face-to-face meetings.

Kinda sounds like you already are. Connection goes down, you can't connect to the database server

last dirge
#

I mean the citrix stuff

#

they have VDI problems constantly

dull chasm
#

we must all get along

last dirge
#

they were also saying that the VDI would be "cleaned" nightly and restored to how it was before I logged in

#

which makes zero sense for software development

#

cool, let me clone all of these git repos

#

daily

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, a lot of VDI solutions always boot up clean + re-attach your user profile (which would include your cloned git repos)

#

They work off of a pre-prepared base image (usually a Windows 10 VM) and boot up a fresh instance of that + a non-persistent differencing disk + a persistent user profile

#

Pretty cool tech, honestly. It even allows your entire session to be moved between physical servers without you noticing

dull chasm
#

that is what i am talking about ^^^^

I got red keys, but wouldn't say that they're quiet
But I have to say that they are very comfortable to type

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture it's not proxmox in itself that is acting up atm, it's the telegraf plug for it.

#

But I'm giving up on it for today

subtle pasture
#

Doesn't OpenStack still require 3 nodes minimum infrastructure?

midnight adder
#

Nah

subtle pasture
#

It's meant to run on multiple racks of servers in huge clusters

#

Little bit weird getting it going in a homelab

midnight adder
#

True, you can do that too but single node deployment is out there and even lined out in the docks

subtle pasture
#

Last time I checked, the "single node deployment" was still 3 nodes.. but they virtualized two of them

#

So your base configuration is already a physical host running two VMs

dusky plank
#

whats the reason you can run hyperv or any other vm on windows though? I don't get it, and is WSL depending on hyperv? never looked into that...

anyway 🤢

subtle pasture
#

@dusky plank WSL1 doesn't depend on HyperV. WSL2 does.

midnight adder
#

There are lot of "projects" I think you refere to packstsck. You could also use devstack, personally I run kolla

subtle pasture
#

WSL1 runs Linux syscalls directly on the NT kernel (GNU + NT), WSL2 spins up a small virtual machine along side Windows, where a full Linux kernel runs

dusky plank
#

so yeah, it's essentially just like any other vm but this time you call it smol

#

still no reason why other hypervisors don't run with hyperv enabled

subtle pasture
#

@dusky plank I mean, it is small, and a single kernel instance can be shared amongst other VMs and containers, shrinking their footprints

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture wait, why don't you like Proxmox?

subtle pasture
#

@dusky plank You can run virtualization nested inside of Hyper-V, actually

dusky plank
#

this is like a whole layer of complexity on top of simple thinking

subtle pasture
#

When you enable Hyper-V, your base Windows install is turned into a special class of virtual machine. Just having Hyper-V enabled puts everything you do inside a VM

#

So when you have Hyper-V enabled, and spin up a WSL2 instance, Windows and Linux literally run side-by-side, not one on top of the other

dusky plank
#

so that's maybe why you can't pass through things

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, most host hardware is passed to the "parent" Windows install by default

#

Which is why it feels almost identical to a native install, in spite of now being a VM

dusky plank
#

it's still the NT kernel that takes over the host I believe? makes no sense to me

#

seems like somewhere down the road they will hit a dead end, but maybe thats just my thinking

subtle pasture
#

NT kernel runs on top of Hyper-V

dusky plank
#

at this point you can just use a regular small hypervisor to run your NT kernel and linux kernel

subtle pasture
#

That's what Hyper-V is, lol

dusky plank
#

yeah, with conditions though

subtle pasture
#

?

#

It's a hypervisor that runs guest operating systems and containers. It's actually incredibly similar to how Proxmox is set up, which relies on KVM to do the same thing

dusky plank
#

yea but you can actually assign hardware to wherever you need them

subtle pasture
#

You can pass network interfaces, PCIe devices, and USB devices, directly to virtual machines, yes

#

Same thing that ESXi and Proxmox let you do

forest edge
#

I feel as though we are losing lounge..

dusky plank
#

proxmox is just a mashup for kvm with a UI. horribly done but works

subtle pasture
#

I did mention its dependency on KVM above, yeah

midnight adder
#

I actually seen a proxmox server in a production environment, but to be fair, in a university

dusky plank
#

nasty

subtle pasture
#

@odd kindle I have a number of reasons for avoiding Proxmox. The poor industry support, poor documentation, and the fact that it's not an embedded OS, being chief among them

#

Poor industry support is a big one. I can't rely on any standard tools to work with a Proxmox install. There's almost no support for backup software of any kind...

#

Also, I'll never deploy it for work... ever... so even fewer reasons to learn it

dusky plank
#

would you deplpy kvm?

subtle pasture
#

Depends on what we're talking about running

#

Most small businesses do fine with a single ESXi or Hyper-V host

hollow glacier
#

arent a bunch of smb's going to AAD and just not having much on prem?

subtle pasture
#

I'm more likely to deploy XenServer than Proxmox, at this point

midnight adder
#

But when you're running a business, is it possible that ESXi isn't free anymore?

subtle pasture
#

@hollow glacier That's been a slow migration. Lots of companies still rely on line-of-business applications that cost too much to move to the cloud

#

So they just keep their on-prem servers, running AD domain controllers and whatever else they need

hollow glacier
#

yeah

#

i'd always heard proxmox was just debian with a gui and some tools

#

so didnt expect it to replace enterprise hypervisors

subtle pasture
#

@midnight adder Well yeah, and if you need 2+ nodes for uptime / redundancy, then you need a vSphere license of some kind to run vCenter

hollow glacier
#

vmware locking vcenter behind a paywall sucks hard for learning :/

#

and all the hardware necessary to really learn and play with esxi + vcenter

midnight adder
#

Have one of these suckers at work.
The pricing change hit us bad

subtle pasture
#

@hollow glacier A VMUG membership is only $200 a year, and includes licenses for all VMWare products

hollow glacier
#

iw as told vmug does not include vcenter

#

mamma's wrong again?

subtle pasture
#

Says it includes vSphere 7 licenses, which should include vCenter

midnight adder
#

I mean VMware isn't oracle

hollow glacier
#

so i suppose that's new

#

good to know tho

subtle pasture
#

Worth mentioning Hyper-V's free version supports clustering, so no licensing needed just to set up an HA/failover cluster in your homelab 😛

#

Microsoft probably has the most feature-complete free hypervisor amongst paid hypervisors

midnight adder
#

But but Microsoft 🤢

hollow glacier
#

yeah but that

subtle pasture
#

That honor used to go to XenServer, but they screwed up their free version massively

hollow glacier
dusky plank
#

hyperv should just die

Where do people here find out about everyone's new creative ideas involving home assistant?

wet pilot
#

usually the forums

#

or reddit

prisma cape
#

Hi people. I need some honest advice, I used to install home automation C4/RTI mostly but have no coding experience. I was looking at tinkering with a Fibaro HC3 when I was told that HA is so much better. The more I look into the product the more it scares me out of using it. I guess my question is, with no experience with coding should I even be considering using this product? I just want some simple integration, lights, alarm, thermostat. Is this program simple enough to install and start adding items too? TIA for even reading this 😊

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture hm, so you'd vote for ESXi for home then?

subtle pasture
#

ESXi is usually my first choice, if possible

#

The hardware requirements are more-strict that most other hypervisors, though

odd kindle
#

lol 🙂 you're answering me after I've gone to bed and you're up when I go up

#

proxmox fit very well with what I wanted a year back or so and I've been very happy with it. But I do agree with broken backups

subtle pasture
#

It's a Friday night, I can stay up late, lol

clever mortar
#

@prisma cape Coding isn't required. A lot can be done in the UI, and there's even external options for UI based automation (see #node-red-archived). Not everything is UI though, but honestly... if you're willing to learn you'll be fine

#

Only folks I see struggling are those who just want spoon fed answers

#

Oh, and I'd argue that YAML isn't coding - it's just a configuration file, not actual "go write some Python"

#

If in doubt, throw it in a VM and play around for a while, there's a lot you can do without connecting to any hardware

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, never had a problem with YAML. It's the darn jinja templates that always take me a while to get right

clever mortar
#

Most of my non-trivial templating has come from the work of others...

odd kindle
#

@subtle pasture us then I take it 🙂

subtle pasture
#

Yeah

odd kindle
#

random thinking of a tired soul. Why is scenes entity ids named in a good way but not scripts

#

I decided a while back that I'd see how far I could get with only the admin ui. Atm I'm doing everything from there. Except for a couple of old scripts I have that are doing very specific things

#

There's also hacs that will provide lots of added integrations if you're missing anything

odd kindle
#

@dusky plank I can see Infra, weird

tacit tapir
#

Do you guys use settings -> helpers or configuration.yaml for adding new helpers? Can't decide what to use.

young sigil
#

Yes we do use settings / helpers or configuration.yaml for adding new helpers.

forest edge
#

@tacit tapir dosen't matter, both work the same way

last cedar
#

Only santa has helpers

forest edge
#

Gonna be cold as shit here on Halloween night lol

deft pewter
#

Are people actually going to be out on Halloween night?

forest edge
#

in civilized countries, yes

deft pewter
#

Could you name a civilised country that goes trick or treating and doesn't have massive rates of Coronavirus infection?

forest edge
#

Ireland

deft pewter
#

Given they just imposed lockdown again, I doubt it.

dull chasm
#

i dont know any "civilised countries"

forest edge

deft pewter
#

The DMZ? I wouldn't fancy going there.

#

Didn't they shoot across that recently?

forest edge
#

@dull chasm bet that was fun lol

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge so when do you leave to go trick or treating?

dull chasm

Always look at the brighter side 😃

#

Been a long week too.

dull chasm

i do over and over but stand near the lines and be cussed at over and over gets to ya

tidal bronze
#

I hear you. As with anything I like to believe it's a phase. Comes and goes.

dull chasm
#

i hope so .....its the younger folks ...so i pray its not the new mentality

tidal bronze
#

Pretty sure our parents thought the same way 😆

dull chasm
#

i really do hope ...

forest edge

@tidal bronze as soon as you go into the bathroom and give your boss the finger

tidal bronze
#

Wowza that turned south pretty quick

dull chasm

forest edge

in this country nothing is "shocking" or "surprising" when it comes to people's attitudes and choices lol

tidal bronze
#

Plus with everything that's going on takes very little to blow a gasket

dusky plank
dull chasm
#

well i dont understand that ...i am very catholic and old fashioned ....i see things i dont agree with and/or dont like but i am not even going to say anything to ya much less beat ya

forest edge
#

some people just want to watch the world burn, that was a line in a movie but it's very true

tidal bronze
#

I agree.

dusky plank
#

some people are also too stupid to see the effects of a burning world

tidal bronze
#

I guess it will be 2022 summer when things get back to somewhat normal.

forest edge
#

I dunno, cali is probably more slated for 2042

tidal bronze
#

Lol. Don't you worry about Cali, it will be just fine.

forest edge
#

people posting videos of the skies in colorado from the fires.. shit is weird lol

#

imagine all the hemp going up in flames and all those hippies crying over it

tidal bronze
#

What's up in Colorado?

forest edge
#

there are wildfires in colorado now

tidal bronze
#

Oh 🙄

forest edge

dusky plank

we austrians live in forest cities, you know

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge you can say that again. 😆

forest edge
#

eons ago we use to take steps to limit the chances of such fires, but then mcdonalds came around and well.. it's too much work to get off the couch

Does anyone know of a z wave power measuring smart plug that works well for them? I want to be able to trigger automations based on my Apple Watch being placed on the charger.

🤣 @clever mortar

fiery sorrel
#

hello :)
Quick question, How do you call the oposite of a radio select list ?
I am looking for something like that to select multiple thing in a list, but without the right word, result are sparsed.

clever mortar
#

HTML forms have names for those things 😉

fiery sorrel
#

aside off "checkbox" i didn't find how list like that are caled sadly

odd kindle
#

@fiery sorrel in html a checkbox allows for multiple selections, a radiobox only one

fiery sorrel
#

ok that is the name i've use for my search but came out empty handed :(

#

thank you anyway, i'll keep looking around the forum for "checkbox" list

dusky plank
#

<select> maybe

#

but thats just single option 😛

forest edge
#

@odd kindle in html it's multiple checkboxs in a fieldset

#

or radio for that matter

fiery sorrel
#

yup can't find any cutome integration or lovelace ui trick to have a checkbox list on the forum, i'll make my own thing :)

light trout
#

You call that a combobox

odd kindle
#

@forest edge a fieldset is a good thing to wrap them in yes, but not always needed

forest edge
odd kindle
#

@forest edge sorry?

forest edge
#

ops

odd kindle
#

So I wonder if I should get another ssd and play around with esxi a bit

dusky plank
#

nah, just boost this server

forest edge
#

Shelly wants 12 bucks to ship an 8 buck accessory through USPS. I'm sorry.. what in the actual fuck.

odd kindle
#

ffs... parents and reading. I have a small raspberrypi setup at their place for some backup. It's not responding, I asked them if they'd accidentally turned it off. They respond with a photo of it and saying "It's blinking, we'll restart it" They have no other way but to pull out the power for it to restart... that's not ideal for a raspberry pi. I've told them that many times

forest edge
#

@odd kindle hook up a push button restart using the gpio pins. that is crazy simple. I even used one of those breadboard buttons and glued it to the top of the case lol

odd kindle
#

That's actually a good idea. But it's been really stable. It's not needed a restart for a year. Except for when they've accidentally just unplugged it.

#

What have happened a few times is their external IP changing

#

So I acked what https://api.my-ip.io gave them, they responeded "Ok"

forest edge
#

I used an old rpib as a vpn at my mothers once, setup a button that would reboot it and had various scripts that would update the ip and even reboot the pi every so often just to refresh things. worked flawlessly for quite some time

hollow glacier
#

@odd kindle why not just setup ddns and a docker container (add on) to update cloudflare or whatever with new wan ip? Domain names be cheap

supple moss
#

CHIP?!

odd kindle
#

@hollow glacier sure. But that does take some time

hollow glacier
#

Nuh uh

#

20 minutes

odd kindle
#

Yes, it does

hollow glacier
#

Maybe

odd kindle
#

No

hollow glacier
#

Compared to walking through parents do anything

odd kindle
#

It just doesn’t. Anything computer related takes more than 20 minutes

hollow glacier
#

Ah

#

I assumed you could already access it remotely

odd kindle
#

I should have set up ddns from the start, but I was sure they had a static IP.

#

But, this was also something I spent as little time as possible on to see if it actually would work ok. Even spending 1h in ddns (nothing takes only 20 minutes in reality) would have been to much time

hollow glacier
#

Yeah I hear you

#

But you quoting how long it takes you to do it doesn’t mean that’s how long it needs to take 🤐

#

😘

odd kindle
#

I’m sure I could set it up in 10 minutes. But in the end it’ll have taken an hour.

clever mortar
#

These days I drop a VPN client on the remote devices, and have them VPN back home. Solves all sorts of remote access issues 😉

odd kindle

deft pewter
#

_is rather used to estimating development. _
You say that like noone else here is.

clever mortar
#

🤣

odd kindle
#

You should always add 20% and then multiply by 3 to get a decent estimate

clever mortar
#

Then you don't do enough 😉

deft pewter
#

You're on a server full of devs and dev ops types.

odd kindle
#

@deft pewter I’m sure all are

clever mortar
#

My internal estimate of time required is usually within 10%
My public estimate is significantly higher
My private estimate is usually between 1.5 and 2 times

odd kindle
#

@clever mortar that’s actually a good idea. WireGuard ftw

clever mortar
#

PiVPN is almost impossible to set up wrong

odd kindle
#

@deft pewter but I’m taking about myself here.

deft pewter
#

Exactly. Which is why Hmoney is spot on:

But you quoting how long it takes you to do it doesn’t mean that’s how long it needs to take 🤐

odd kindle
#

@clever mortar I don’t really want it to exist on my local network tho. The entire idea is for it to be disconnected from any hacking

deft pewter
#

I could estimate that it would take me 6 hours and my estimate might be accurate... it's still longer than it needs to take.

#

Can we start the air gap conversation back up if we're talking about making things 100% secure? 😄

clever mortar
#

If in doubt, get an expert to do it

#

If you're the expert, you've done something wrong, or right

odd kindle
#

Well, getting an expert to do it costs a lot more. The fact that it’s a raspberry pi should give you and indication of my budget

#

Imho what I’ve done works very well and have been very solid for at least a year. With the small catch that when I did it I believed my parents had a static IP.

dusky plank
#

as long as you dont use pptp 🤷‍♂️

#

oh and punching ssh tunnels for a single client takes ~2‘ and has the same effect

odd kindle
#

That’s what I’m doing now, ssh not pptp

stable flint
#

shoudl i just install debian 10 then

#

?

clever mortar
#

Yes

stable flint
#

wait before i do the machine has 512mb of ram

#

will that be fine or do i have to upgrade

#

also 40gb of storage

odd kindle
#

I ran debian just fine on way less than 512mb back in the days.

stable flint
#

will try thanks!

odd kindle
#

but it all depends on what you're going to do with it

stable flint
#

ha core, cups and sane

#

thats it

forest edge
#

I swear the more they say people need to wear masks on the news the more people go out and don't in spite. Like those dogs who chew your shoes lol

stable flint
#

also as daemon

#

not in terminal because its just plain annoying

odd kindle
#

We've not been doing masks at all here, stupid thing is that I think most would use them if gov just told us to

stable flint
#

fax

#

also sorry to ping @odd kindle do you still think that woudl be enough?

#

im installing debiannow

#

brb

odd kindle
#

Nowdays I mostly do Alpine for simple setups, but that's just me

stable flint
#

but debian is the only official one supported right?

clever mortar
#

Generally speaking, most folks here know Debian if you need help with it. Many guides you find will be Debian based.
