@low harness 47 billion meatballs
I never had an IKEA meatball.
they looked gross to me lol
The Ikea plant based sausages are great
I always get 2-3 when I'm at IKEA
I've only tried the vegan meatballs, they are great too, not tried the plant based meatballs yet
schöttbulâr
that is actually pretty accurate to how kids in norway now prounounce it
yeah i learned the K is like 'sh'
classic norwegian is "Kjøtt" which is pronounced very differently from "Schøtt"
My Belgian friend can't hear the difference because that sound doesn't exist in Flemish

@dusky plank Love them

SPG are great.
@midnight adder both
we have free dental care until we are 19 years old
and I get 50% on all dental work for the rest of my life since I grinded teeth as a kid 🤣
"Steam powered giraffe" makes me think of this for some reason https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnG_Ce8Qz9w
Enchanting, spectacular, beautiful piece of fairytale that I think I'll ever see. Giant figure puppet girl doll stands at 11-12 meter high. So cool, and amazing.. You won't believe your eyes.
That reminds me of the creepy statue in Devs.

I'd like to hear an 'murican opinion on this
I thought we didn't do politics in here 😄
ban him!
I will say this, no matter how much the government may have messed up, our death toll is the people's fault. Something no report/video/article will likely state because of politics lol
but on the same note, what you see in those videos is a very small fraction of our country
just your state then @forest edge ? 🤣
It's always the people's fault. We all have a choice between staying safe or spreading it.
It's a shame that there are so many selfish people that do the latter.
thought it‘s ok - since politics didn‘t do anything in essence according to this. but okey, I go now 🚶🏼♂️
I was half joking, mstone. Coronavirus affects us all (in different ways depending on where we live, of course), and people are bound to want to talk about it.
np 😄 its just that my gov f up in much the same way
It's just one of those topics that can quickly turn into a heated debate over how particular politicians have handled (or not, as may be the case) the situation.
How'd you get that? I haven't shared that set yet.
grafana can now display gifs?
IF ONLY
Awesome. I just got an email from my company about a mandatory training which cannot be accessed with Internet Explorer. We are encouraged to use a different browser. On our work computers. Where only Internet Explorer is installed. And noone has admin access.
no admin access 🤢
Let's hope they informed IT about this beforehand (Hah!).
that's a hard pass from me
Yeah, I had that changed for me immediately.
we are also locked down in our company. fortunately I'm in a position to calculate my own admin password and anyone elses 😄
The new IT manager also turned off Excell macros globally...
we can't even use usb devices except for bitlocker keys, locked out by ivanti
Yeah, I'm gonna pass
ohh that's just to begin with atx, all https traffic is ssl intercepted - media, sharing, gmail, basically everything is blocked
Thankfully I work for a sane company
and I get 50% on all dental work for the rest of my life since I grinded teeth as a kid 🤣
@clear ferry
Same here in Estonia. UK at least used to be exception in Europe with dental care for all, just thought maybe Norway had everyone covered since you're loaded with oil.
well, it's not expensive tbh
a regular filling will set you back $200-300 full price, but a lot of people have coverage through some system
I did 3 fillings at once at one time, think I paid $500 for that
regular filling is about 60 euro or 70 usd here, but well the standard of living is somewhat different
all in all it's not expensive unless you haven't taken any care of them and need to rebuild everything
yeah, the average norwegian salary appears to be.... $62k a year now
probably skewed by some higher paid occupations
gross/before taxes?
before
mean, the median appears to be $55k
That's pretty decent but I guess it's reflected in cost of living too.
UK's median income is way lower, so I guess our cost of living is also cheaper.
our average is around that as well
US?
yea
google of "american average income" says 33.700 though 🤣
learn to google better?
The provisional estimate of median disposable income in the UK is £30,800 in FYE 2020
Income isn't salary though
wanker
UNPOSSIBLE
Yeah, a lot of these stats will be based on what's left after deductions. I was shocked when I saw £30k for a household in the UK, then remembered taxes 😄
taxes is quite different in just the scandi countries
if I lived in denmark I would probably pay 50-55%
Exactly. Which is why salary is a bad measure.
in norway I paid 31% last year
- social security tax or whatever you call it there?
Is that all taxes combined? Here, we have income tax and National Insurance (social security).
all taxes combined
that sounds... low
do norwegians get something like SS?
About in line with the UK then. 20% basic rate for income tax, 12% for National Insurance.
I think UK does
my router and my grandpa have a SSID
Generous personal allowance before you pay either too. Low earners barely have to make contributions.
what's the dole situation like in norway
is that people in work ?
I suppose you don't count VAT there, atx?
norwegians don't get social security
people who either refuse to work or can't work...
if atx retires, he starves
we have 3,6% of people currently not working who are in working age last week it seems
why call it social security, not pension
because... america
same concept as a "security blanket" for a kid lol
it means once you retire you'll be taken care of
I think the numbers now is if I lose my job the state pays me 70% of my old salery for up to three years
or until I get a job
what do you get when you get old tho?
Whatever you save up plus what the state saves for you
and what does the state save?
my employer matches what the state saves for me + 14% or something
damn that sounds like that could be harsh
so if I retire at age 62 with my currently salary I get $77k a year until I die
probably you have some sort of guaranteed minimum too
which I think is counted up to 100 years or something
yes, that is what the states saves for you, that's the minimum
thats not bad sounding, but that depends on what your current salary is lol
bad overtime year this year, so not very high 🤣
somewhere between $100k and $150k a year
well 100 wouldn't be bad, 150 would be trash lol
pension is less taxed than salary though, I think I would pay 20-25% or something
SS here is kind of all over the board on factors so some could be 25% to 50% but what really shines is the additional perks almost every company provides such as 401 and then of course Medicare etc
I know some who make more retired a month then they did working lol
yeah, talked to a collegue in the US, he mentioned he lost almost all his pension in the 401k a while back
no idea how that works
it would be.. impossible for me to lose more than 1-2% here
that is how much is invested in equity funds
401 is just one of many things
Yeah, I could lose the bit of my current employer's pension in funds, but not the rest of it, or the previous one, or the state one 😄
I find the american way of filing taxes... interesting
here the state fills our papers, we look at them, if we agree, we do nothing
pain in the ass, online makes it way easier but still a pain in the ass
been fortune had a tax person in the family so I never had to do any of the crunching part, just cough up paperwork lol
tax stands?
yeah, a booth where you could sit down with a consultant to fill your taxes apparently
oh lol
it's kind of a big business there, the whole tax filling
these tax soft companies lobbie for congress to not change the filling all the time
looks like it works
yea prior to the interwebs doing your yearly taxes was a complete shit show imo
I've done my taxes online since.... 2005 I think
which means, looking at it, and agreeing
but what is there to fill for the 90% of the population? the state knows it already for the most part
LOL we don't file taxes
there are all kind of cuts you can file for, hell havving kids is a huge thing alone
the state fills that field automatically
well that's same for the most countries I believe
the state knows you're a father lol
if they give you one kid less you complain / fill the paperwork, otherwise you just agree and it's done
my wife has to put in that she bought books for school though, that's a big thing for her, since she actually gets money back, without having an income for the last 5 years 🤣
you can take tax breaks on all kinds of shit, state dosen't know everything so you can specify
but she puts it on me, so I get reduced tax instead
same thing as that
what are the common things besides kids? I mean examples from your life
just curious
In ireland I think I paid 8% tax 🤔
only thing I have changed on my tax papers the last 13 years have been my milage at work @midnight adder because I get money back for that
well I get tax breaks on my farm, agriculture. tax breaks on equipment purchases. I mean all kinds of shit.
@clear ferry training here... or well education, is the only thing for me that I could have added
I can add more stuff but I have to above a certain level for it to make an impact that for me it would be $1 here or there
which I don't bother
So I'm doing AWS certification this year, and PRINCE2 certification, and I need to refresh my VCP next year, wonder if I should do a VCP in another field than DCV 🤔
because if you do a VCP in another field the other VCPs get refreshed while you at the same time gain another VCP
you should, sounds like when you retire your gonna need all the money you can get..
Pssh, I'll live like a king
so smaller house in the middle of an empty field surrounded by angry lemmings?
I need to get an sdr
WTF are you doing with PRINCE2? Dont you work alone?
I have to interact with feckers sometimes
and some customers "demand" prince2 certification for project work
zzzzzzzzzzzzz
I already have ITIL v3 🤷
Those who demands that, have no clue what they are doing
so, most customers then
I got itil as well, never used it 🤷
pretty sure most that shit is just made up to make money
I've been a change manager, a problem manager and an incident manager
in different projects
I've even led change boards
hell you didn't need any certifications to work any level of computers back in my day lol
a well paid without jumping through hoops all my life farmer tyvm
you one of those Ukrainians writing custom cracked firmwire for John Deere, eh?
hell no, I try and avoid doing anything other than playing video games and creating artwork on a computer these days. HA is about as code involved as i get these days rotf
I don't mind reading crap, like changelogs to stuff etc, but to actually put forth the effort to type anything out other than to BS @clear ferry is too much work for me
lol
do you even RFC822: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pdw/Mail-RFC822-Address.html
that's a ridiculous regex
I couldn't get it to parse in two different online regex testers.
Once you make it a single line it's parsed by Debuggex just fine
my homeassistant works
Don't let the IRS know that
Hey everyone, i'm looking at improving my home network. I currently have 22 devices on my wireless home network which is powered by an Ubiquiti Amplifi HD (https://amplifi.com/amplifi-hd) with 2 meshpoints. Some of the devices such as a laptop and an ipad have recently started seeing speed degradation as well as an XBox One S.
- Would it help if upgrade to a ubiquiti AP AC Pro with an appropriate switch?
- How would I be able to determine whether the Amplifi HD is struggling?
with only 22 devices, it's most likely not struggling
come back when you add another 0 to that 😉
you'd think
Is that really their marketing photo??
They cater to home users who think they are enterprise, so nothing surprises me
Years of educating people on the non-risks of wifi ”radiation” out the window.
Unpopular opinion... I like that ad.
look, it's a monopinion!
That was a blast from the past
Razer?
That looks ancient
I've been looking for speakers. Saw they have a set of 'gaming speakers', whatever the fuck they are. I guess it just means they're overpriced and have LED's
they are doing citrix pentests at my company now... I'm curious what comes next
I don't have any Citrix pens 😦
Next step up would be, wooden toy cars
we are owned now by fujitsu, wonder when I'll get my A64FX workstation
Fujitsu 🤢
I think there will be no more of that
🦵 ?

Hey - I got a issue in setting up - which channel is the right one to go to?
Not sure which install you're using? If you have system_health enabled you can check Configuration -> Info, or see the following.
-
If you're using HassOS, flashed an image, or booted a VM with an image you're using #330990055533576204
-
If you installed Linux and then ran a script to install HA and have add-ons then you have #330944238910963714
-
If you're running
dockercommands or use a Docker manager and have no add-ons then you have #449717345808547842 -
Finally, if you use
pipto install or upgrade you have #551864459891703809
Having difficulty chosing an install method? See this blog post for guidance.
I legit thought that AmpliFi ad was for a Razer product at first glance 🤢
You know how I know this is a product for home users? It's in a form factor that doesn't stack or rack, and it has a display on the front...
Displays 🤢
"How about we don't include the OLED screen, saving a ton of money on the hardware, and invest more time into the management webapp, hmmmm?"
Nah, we'll give it 1.5 years of updates
M A R K E T I N G
And then abandon it
I like how they think anyone is going to make a mesh of these...
Lol, doesn't even support running from PoE
🤢
Yeah, nobody is going to bother with this thing
"prosumer"
I wouldn't even call this prosumer
It has the feature set of any modern Asus or Netgear home router, with a gimicky OLED screen on the front
And they want $379 for this pile? Lol
ubiquity is witchcraft
This, surprisingly, isn't a Ubiquiti product
I don't like Ubiquiti at all, but at least they actually qualify as Prosumer
Oof, aight, one more thing from ubiquiti I hate then
😂
i used to hang out in their server
apparently each team does their own thing and never work together
you got me worried there leapo
so that's why you end up with like.. 10 different things that all do the same thing in a similar way
and a wildly different gui for each
will stick with used enterprise WAPs
like that product isnt far off from the amplifi
I'll think about investing in WiFi 6 when I have even a single client that supports it. lol
samesies
Most of my network is still Wireless N... with the newer devices being AC
lol
n?
that's no excuse
although i guess my wireless clients could survive on that
max 1080p stream to plex is 40mbpsish
My WAP supports Wireless AC, as do my streaming devices, so they're good 😛
assuming you know about that travesty
leaf switch with no oob mgmt
No thanks XD
And yeah, Ubiquiti loves to sell expensive switches that need additional hardware for management...
my current issue with them is locking l3 behind rackmount $$$$$$$ switches
Used Cisco SG300 switches are cheap, and L3 👀
i took ccna classes a million years ago and had my fun with cli and big boy shit
for home i dont want that lol
Oh, no, SG series switches are small-business
They're not Catalyst series
They have a cushy webadmin
ah nice
i'm also kinda anti cisco given their track record
altho these days i could say that about pretty much everything
lol
Well, for the price, they're worth a look. And if you're buying used, you're not giving any more money to Cisco 😛
There's a 28 port PoE+ SG300 on ebay for $139 right now, which is kinda absurd
nah i went full retard with unifi for home and likely just gonna keep what i have for a few years min
that is nice
total PoE budget?
googles
nice
yeah i almost went either pfsense or homelab route w/ my home network
decided to toy with other stuff instead (such as hass lol)
my ONT at home got upgraded and now has a 10GbE WAN port...
if they ever come out with 10GbE i'd have to def move away from unifi at least for routing/switching
Total PoE budget appears to be 180 watts on that switch, with each port supporting 802.11af
The SG300-28MP has a budget of 375 watts, with each port supporting 802.11at
So the "PP" variant is actually the lower end version, lol
🤏
I'm running pfsense as my home router. Huge upgrade over the Asus router I was using before
I can actually get full gigabit routing now, lol
Pfsense served me well for 15 years
But they are more stale than five day old garlic bread these days
Supports everything I need it to 🤷♀️
pfsense also cant hit 10GbE wan speeds
Good thing my WAN is only 1.2 gbps 😛
Damn Philips is doing a 50% off...
Can't imagine it being much better on blackfriday
hue stuff?
10g wan, that's a nice 🤏 🍆
Also, if you need 10gbps routing, Netgate still has you covered with tnsr
TNSR productizes projects like VPP, DPDK, FRR, and more. Take a look at what makes TNSR the fastest packet processing engine at a fraction of the cost.
@calm crow im blind, where is this deal you speak of
They've pushed 100 gbps through that new router OS of theirs...
Though it's decidedly less consumer-friendly than pfsense
yea lol
so is that a site that just aggregates deals sent to users and abuses it until the company ends the sale?
lol
I don't see much of a difference between my hue and tradfri bulbs, the hues dim a little softer and lower but thats about it
oh and the color syncing with hue sync is a bit more accurate
i guess i dont hate that idea
It's exactly that. Share deals/vouchers so as many people as possible can benefit from them.
Sometimes the 'deals' people share are pretty lame. Other times, it's massive discounts.
arent hue bulbs special in that they are able to change default behavior after power loss?
A deals a deal
@hollow glacier Can confirm, that is a feature
Colour hue b22 are 24quid
Can't imagine it cheaper anywhere else on blackfriday
Maybe might see promo again where you get an Alexa cheap
that's why i went with hue bulbs
although i havent looked into the tasmota flashing or w/e and the benefits there
aww nice, a 15 hour work day over, I just love home office
f google gets worse every day,
first page searching for b22 hue bulb returns all pages in UK
aww nice, a 15 hour work day over, I just love home office
@hearty depot ouch
7 hours overtime. i do the same atm. profit!
nah, just had to be finised today and I like the collection of hours
gleitzeit is georgus as well
<- exempt from overtime, as though that’s a good thing
so you have to work 15 hours and get paid 7.8?
every hour overtime gets paid out for me, so no bad deal
considering i don't even have to go anywhere
I just like the extra vacation
But it’s more salaried vs hourly, and has other implications
as long as it works out for you, have been there too, but in gastronomy. that sucked so hard (and I was young back then)
Excempt from overtime 🤢
Anyone know of a good smart clock? I want something that has a lot of control with home assistant
I was hoping it would have a wake up light and an alarm that can be triggered by hass. Is that a thing?
@bitter zinc If you have a siren/sonos/google/alexa etc you could just have an automation trigger them at your desired time no?
That’s true
I wanted something more professional looking though
I already have an Alexa in that room in a different spot
Lol on the siren
chainsaw on smartswitch ? seems like it would work one way or another
I asked about rtxrfx433s in here a few days ago. Word is the manufacturer isn’t making any more at the moment
FYI to people rocking iOS and ubiquiti.. check the last bullet point
what soil moisture sensors do you all like to use?
I was hoping it would have a wake up light and an alarm that can be triggered by hass. Is that a thing?
@bitter zinc
HA at least on Android can read your alarm time, trigger all the lights, music and sprinkles with it when HA also knows you're at home or smth.
what soil moisture sensors do you all like to use?
@terse stag SHT30
sand sensor
HA noob here. Where is the best spot for dashboard config ideas?
probably #frontend-archived
just watched a japanese carpenter video where he used dewalt tools.. that was strange to see
Why strange ?
just seems like an odd choice in tool brand to me
i mean professional carpenters here don't use dewalt lol
I don't mean contractors, i mean carpenters
Lol. Professional carpenters huh.
never seen one?
you never seen Bicentennial Man? he makes clocks out of beach wood during a good chunk of the movie lol
my grandfather was one
Nopes.
he was a hobbyist at it but still was one lol
well carpenters are the ones who build those custom cabinets and stairs and moldings etc. not everything is bought at lowes lol
for someone who loves speakers you should befriend you one, custom enclosures is key to the best sound 😉
That's a long a winding road making custom cabinets. 1983 made perfect sense. With the amount of science that goes in to design and pressure testing etc not worth the effort.
for speaker enclosures or cabinets in a home? cabinets in a home are always worth it. why do you think so many are eager to gut older homes for thiers lol
Lol. Speaker enclosures.
Little light headed today.
Was not expecting to take a last minute flight.
you should tell your company to get with the times and just use the internet like everyone else
well same diff right lol
Yep.
love that i paid banggood for 10-13 day shipping and it takes them 5 days to process the order then tell me it will be here in a month
Lol. I am yet to try banggood
they are basically a middleman to china but safer to purchase from than china lol
I just 'lost' google services on my daily driver (update to android 11 without doing my homework first)
and I was plesantly supprised that the Homeassistant app is in the F-Droid store
nice, after I cleared up my nfs errors on windows I actually get vscode with ssh connection to work reliably
this was quite handy since dell are shitholes who don't give users any proper options for older java based bullshit
nice Nextcloud has a virtual drive preview client
so I don't have to sync to browse folders
which I have been missing
webdav ❤️
what movie is that btw?
The Boys
uuh prime, one thing I actually have. but also never use
nah, i snitch iptv from my parents house 😄
I'm so old I didn't even cancel my tv subscription until last month
I just realized, we don't watch tv that much and if we do we watch national tv
which is free to stream
yeah traditional television channels are a legacy thing
give me one
well it's not reliant on the statues of internet availability or condition for one
99.9 my ass
I can count on my fingers the internet outages I've had that have affected me in the last 15 years
and I don't have chernobyl fingers
I'm sorry American internet sucks so bad ?
thats probably because you grown to just accept certian outages as "normal" and don't count those lol
every infrastructure has issues, no country is an exception lol
Yeah, I've had probably 7 outages since 2004 that have been more than 3 minutes, was that more clear ?
Not counting when I lived in Ireland and had wireless internet, jesus christ that was a joke
well like i said, anymore today people just accept certain faults as "normal" and don't even consider them. not to mention you done already said you don't watch tv so any hiccups you wouldn't even catch most likely lol
I've had a lot more outages of TV than internet over the years
well thats my point, you can have multiple of issues when it comes to iptv
and even when we had a power outage in a winter storm I could still watch national tv via my mobile phone sharing internet to my laptop, because mobile data is also 99.999% uptime in reality
well with my generator i can still watch cable tv with a power outage lol
yeah, don't need that when mobile internet is basically always avaliable and generally free to use
well i don't like watching tv for ants
eh, 17" suffices for 3 hours while the power is out
not by my standards, I tend to shoot for higher goals
I can see that when you live in a country with substandard internet access
my internet is just fine for what I do with it
not everyone needs to torrent everything in life to get it lol
for the next 20 years lol
now you are just adding metrics to the existing discussion
which it is for most @dusky plank atleast here
I expect you to be your own isp atx, you ARE the backbone of ze internetz
lol adding metrics, can't handle the truth
I guess there's loads of content made in Norway to consume. Rest of the world stream content from US with all these substandard internet issues. You always learn something new.
Wonder what's there to watch made in Norway 🤔
24/7/365 trains traversing norway. no joke
oh? not seen the boat one lol
That was the first https://nrkbeta.no/2011/06/16/hurtigruten-eng/
oh? not seen the boat one lol
@forest edge 🤣
134 hours.. holy hell lol
Epic
omg i love the paragraph title Watching paint dry – live on TV
for awhile i thought @dull chasm was nuts thinking about getting a tractor but now i realized he meant this lol https://youtu.be/AdTlnGXbTuE

the co2 sensor has become very important since I'm in home office 😄
why haven't you fixed importing sensors without restarting yet @light trout ? 😢
There is nothing to fix
hey, I can reload rest sensors without restart 🤔
Anyone here with experience using Home Assistant integrated with a G4 S-BUS system?
not here specifically, in the other channels maybe
it is like creepy foggy out
There's no support for Home Assistant here - please look at the other channels for that.

wow the farmers' almanac least accuracy for a year was only 75%
Hi, I was wondering if you guys knwo anything about smart thermostats, I'm thinking of buying a Netatmo or Tapo system but I'm not sure which one is best and works best with home assistant
sorry
Now try #integrations-archived 😉
the grey one was 2€ cheaper. guess material doesn‘t matter anymore
oh an those are great 👌
exactly
What is this cd? 2005 atxblyat tech?
Heh, what're you using an external NVMe drive for?
970 Pro is kinda' spendy to then be hamstrung by USB 3
@boreal pewter You haven't lived until you've had to install Unreal Tournament 2004 from 6 CD-ROMs...
They later re-released it on two DVDs
6 CD's? How many punchcards is that?
I feel like The Ancient Ones would know... Tinkerer? atx?
just to diagnose @subtle pasture
and my tradfris keep the light level and color on power cut, so that is not only a hue feature 🤔
what is a smart keyboard?
Lol... its their keyboard cover
Using that 3 prong smart apple connector
Back to having a nice terminal again
i want this macos on arm on ipad thing
I think it wont matter in 3 years as basically all macOS apps will be iPad apps
yeah except i still want a traditional desktop wm
maybe they have eye tracking on point until then, maybe then I'm willing to change
It will probably be more of a hybrid desktop
well then I hope microsoft changes to broadcom rf and I can finally hackintosh this damn surface pro with wifi
Ha
@subtle pasture i sure did.
@dusky plank Can you also configure them to do different things on power-restore, or do they always just "restore last state"?
Hue bulbs can be configured to restore their previous state, or restore a specific scene, or restore to full-brightness, or restore to off, after a power cut.
they just restore - ok now i get what you mean
At least restoring to their last-known state isn't the worst option. Some smart bulbs always restore to full-bright
Which sucks if there's a power blip in the middle of the night
whole bedroom is suddenly lit, full-bright, at 3:00 AM
working as intended
Yah... no thank you
I suppose Hue bulbs supporting that feature goes along with being able to use them without a hub
You can just replace any bulb on a dumb switch, configure the bulb once over Bluetooth, and it'll (optionally) restore whatever you set every time you flip the switch
Yeah, all of my smart lighting is either Lutron switches, or Hue bulbs
Best setup tp be honest
And then occasionally Lutron Pico Remotes controlling Hue lights via HomeAssistant, lol
Wemo is only good for their 2020 smart small outlets
Hue for lights, Lurton for switches
We did end up using 6 hue bulbs in the dining room, because there are two light fixtures with 3 buckets each, and we wanted to be able to control each bucket independently
I have everything communicating via HomeKit
Lutron dimmer switches would have been cheaper, but... couldn't control each bucket individually
Can you throw them in anyways and just have them leave the power on?
Instead control the lights through home automation
This was the solution we landed on for the switches: https://www.amazon.com/Lutron-Aurora-Dimmer-Philips-Z3-1BRL-WH-L0/dp/B07RJ14FBS
Simultaneously locks the toggle switch in the ON position, and provides on/off + dimming
Saw that.... my current apartment switches suck
Dims all the lights as a group, but relative to whatever brightness they were at, so they don't all suddenly become the same brightness when you turn the nob
But those look amazing
I have the big flat switches
I need to see if they sell some kind of face plate to cover them
They do ^
I used one of those to add a dimmer nob for a lamp in the living room
Added to when I buy a home buy this bucket list
I do wonder how apartment-friendly those nobs are... since they don't require any modification to the existing switch, but do leave a small bite mark on the underside
@last dirge Agreed, but I wasn't about to individually wire 6 bucket lights and install 6 Lutron dimmer switches...
Hue bulbs made sense there
I want multi color bulbs everywhere with every wall switch as a smart device
HomeKit 😛
Then I just pull the nob off the toggle switch and use the lights normally...
Throw a few HomePod minis and each is a hub device
There's literally a backup immediately under the smart switch. lol
Use HA along side HomeKit for the advanced stuff
I just...use the switch
without removing anything
Dimmer knob button
Mine works as is, I'd only have to remove it from the wall if my Hue hub died and I needed my accent lighting ASAP
I might hold off until they support HomeKit thread
the only way I'd have to do anything so my lights are usable would be because the switch itself malfunctioned
Apple is making a home setup without a single point of failure
Fair, you can do that with smart bulbs too. You can link these dimmer nobs directly to Hue bulbs, without a hub
and if someone comes to my house and wants to use stuff, it's just switches
Thread with 5 hubs = only total power loss
Usually you just walk around in my apartment and the lights just turn on as needed
My Hue stuff works through the Hue hub, so yeah, that all works even if HA dies
See above, you can link Lutron Aurora nobs directly to Hue bulbs
or someone kicks the plug out of the wall
So if that's your concern, they'll work even if the hub is down
You say you can but have you?
@subtle pasture soon that wont be an issue once thread takes over
@deft pewter Yeah, it's a bitch to un-pair them once the nobs are linked to a specific bulb (or group of bulbs). lol
Thread can have multiple hubs
So you either have multiple points of failure or you have some horrible bindings?
I don't need a hub for functionality?
I'm glad I went with smart switches.
me too
Hue bulbs literally work fine with no hub
I don't have to remove a bunch of lights or stuff when I move
"oh, by the way, all of the switches in the house are Z-wave + if you want to do something with that"
"oh no, they work with whatever bulbs you've got, no need for fancy stuff"
thread looks like its about to become the universal standard
Yeah, same here. All the switches are Lutron (or non-smart)
That thing between apple and everyone
This is Thread, right? https://xkcd.com/927/
Lol
You're not going to convince me that individually wiring the buckets on track lighting to 6 individual smart switches is a better solution than just throwing smart bulbs in. lol
@deft pewter it also won't come with a power adapter
It's still yet another standard. Which means even more fragmentation and confusion for end users.
This ^
Apple: Our phone is now USB-c compatible
For a few years yah
consumer: so I can use whatever USB-C cord I want?
Apple is skipping usb c?
Apple: no, you have to convert USB-C to our proprietary connector
Macbooks have usb-c. Only.
I thought they still use lightning
@brisk glen Apple is sticking to their proprietary lightning connector for iPhones, still
Which is annoying as hell
which is stupid as shit
if the 12 went USB-C, I'd probably get one. otherwise, can't find a reason to
wireless charging is almost the least efficient way to charge anything
yeah, true. I very rarely plug it in
It only losses what? 12%?
charges at night on my nightstand. it has hours
plus the AC/DC loss in the SMPS
Efficiency's not just about time. That's wasted energy.
not to mention the heat generated as a byproduct
@last dirge True, though it is convenient, and slower charging is technically better for battery longevity
Yeah. Until we have cold fusion, I feel like people should be paying more attention to waste.
Plus magnets should perfectly align it... so I wonder how bad the power loss is now
Might be less than standard Qi which is a place it somewhere
@brisk glen Heh, using magnets to align it? This stand just has 3 coils, and automatically determines the best one to use
Yah but if we are taking about efficiency with power
It's this, in black: https://www.amazon.com/TYLT-Wireless-Charging-Compatible-Qi-Enabled/dp/B00DG8NVQI
The alignment should be able to increase the efficiency
@deft pewter I mean, up side to wireless chargers is they reduce the number of wired chargers and cables needed. I've used this same Qi charger for 5 different phones now
I can do that with all my micro-USB devices 🤷♂️
My last phone with MicroUSB was my LG G3...
I'm also not sure that producing yet another gadget actually reduces the number of gadgets.
There'd be fewer if you just continued to use the ones you had.
I mean, that's 5 charging standards I skipped 😛
And yet still one more than you needed.
It's a luxury. To try to convince yourself of anything else is folly.
I only bought 1, not 5... so yay?
Nay he says... 1 is too many
1 is all you need
The luxery is buying the latest QuickCharge # charger every year, lol
I haven't had to buy a new wireless charger for 8 years and counting. If buying devices that will last a decade (or more) is "wasteful" then I dunno what to say...
Had to check how old these Tylt chargers were, I'm surprised they're still for sale
If every device you've owned since then has been chargeable wirelessly, that's great.
I think it's also about security for them, usbc allows lower level access in certain areas than lightning
Lumia 920, LG G3, LG G6, and LG v35, yup... all support Qi charging
anyways, the T2 chips have just been pwned so I expect the next releases to be usb-c for sure
How does t2 have anything to do with that?
It’s already dead as the new macs are using apple ARM chips all the way
It’s simply a bridge device that handles a lot of stuff
Extra stuff like video encoding / decoding because intel sucks
it's responsible for secure boot which includes ports?
Aye
But it's the same vulnerability as the A10 chip, right? They didn't drop USB support after that.
Apple's T2 Chip Has Unpatchable Security Flaw, Claims Researcher
If their claim is accurate, it's not fixable.
arm is far in the future, not on the market even
Yah, I mean it’s biased off the same iPhone chipset designs
Their next gen of everything but Pro devices is likely to be ARM.
I still want to see adobe putting out CS for arm and I don't mean the ipad lite versions
takes some time for the "pros" to make the jump
Yeah, I can't imagine professionals wanting to risk it until Apple have proven the decision is solid.
Even as a dev, I don't think I'd want to go to ARM yet.
And it'll take a couple of years for software providers to catch up.

@brisk glen Encoding / decoding isn't something Intel CPUs need to offload, though? Intel QuickSync leverages the integrated GPU to handle encoding and decoding tasks
AMD CPUs have a harder time with that, honestly. No integrated GPU to lean on...
Something something their chipset is faster....
Thus Apple uses the T2 for a lot of things
@deft pewter I'm not sure how well professional workloads will translate with the massive disparity in performance between the fastest x86 CPUs and the fastest ARM CPUs...
ARM, traditionally, has not scaled up very well
look up the A64FX and the fugaku
It’s not just about the cpu
It’s about all of the extra stuff apple puts in their chipset
I'm not saying it's impossible to make a fast ARM CPU, I'm saying that it doesn't scale well. By the time you get to x86 levels of performance, you're drawing x86 levels of power (or more)
Yeah, depends on the rest of the architecture. There's a bunch of stuff was traditionally done by a CPU that isn't anymore.
Using their neural chipset to do video processing at far faster rates than intel
nah, arm will take over in the power consumption compared to x86 only because the instruction set is much more limited
@dusky plank That hasn't born out in previous attempts at "Big ARM", but I'd love to see it
Nah, its all about specialization
at the rate of exponential growth we will se something like these 60core arm chips in a few years
Not have the CPU do everything but have other chipsets handle it
Exponential, huh? Hasn't Moore's law already failed?
that too, yes
Hit a snag 😛
'Exponential' has gotta be one of the most frequently misused words.
'going up quickly' != exponential
@dusky plank I'd rather fewer + faster cores. AMD made the "throw more cores at it" gamble a few years back, and it didn't pan out for them all that well
It's playing well for them on ryzen
it did imo :/ maybe I'm wrong but they did take intels spotlight now
And lot of them 😛
Bulldozer was a massive flop, in part, because of the poor single-threaded performance
Bulldozer was a problem
having 16+ cores on a chip didn't really matter with single-threaded IPC not improving
and intel still struggles in their nm areas 😄
Yeah, they fixed their IPC problem and now have some of the best single-threaded performance around, which is why they're back in the game
Core counts in excess of 8 are just icing on the cake
At least, for the workloads most people will be throwing at them
now imagine the jump apple projected for their arm chips, i believe it will be similar to Powerpc vs x86 back then
It’s starting to turn into why have that many cpu cores.. why not more dedicated ones
Thermal issues
Do something faster and use less power and generate less heat
Their multi-core chips actually have more thermal issues because of the sheer die size... EPYC processors intentionally heat unused cores to make sure the die doesn't thermally fracture when only a few cores are under load
AMD kinda needed 7nm to avoid that problem being any worse than it is
they got that fixed in zen3 afaik
neural / tensor flow cores are becoming a big thing with the big performance increases in video work, audio, gaming
You can use them for ray tracing
Yeah, though that's more of a GPU task these days
At least during the editing process. Final encode is still a single-threaded CPU task...
When the gpu has their own tensorf cores
h.264 and h.265 don't actually thread, at all, if you want to use all possible encoding optimizations
they already have mechanisms to make single threaded tasks optimized to run multithreaded in compile time using AI - this only gets better with time
Yeah, the issue with video compression is that the current frame can be made to depend on a number of previous, and upcoming, frames. When doing archival quality encoding, this prevents the encoding process from being threaded efficiently
It becomes a very serialized operation when you're going for the smallest file size for a given level of quality possible
that is mpeg and h264, I don't really know about h265 but future codecs will heavily depend on propability calculations.. so the current codecs just aren't leveraging the available performance yet, much more in the future
h.265 doesn't really differ from h.264 in that regard. The better the compression ratio, the worse the encoder threads
The nice thing about h.265 is isn't not really any harder to decode than h.264 (potentially easier to decode than h.264 for a given subjective level of quality)
But boy, encoding it is a bitch
imo arm / apple arm aswell as amd will just overrun intel in leaps, but who knows 🤷♂️
Never know what will happen, honestly. People said the same thing back when the Athlon 64 was facing off against the Pentium 4
And then Intel released the Core architecture...
intel will hit back
its a back and forth
like it always was
its cool seeing arm in laptops but its not going to be popular for people that want universal performance
Indeed, and I'm all for hybrid ARM/x86 machines being a thing
Though there hasn't really been much need. Idle power consumption on x86 has been rather good for a long time, and the adoption of "race to idle" power management schemes has improved things further
Ironically, it's the bigger / faster x86 CPUs that have the potential for the best battery life right now. They can spin up to full clockspeed, complete a task, and return to parked/idle, faster than their low-end counterparts, thus saving battery.
Hi All. I've had HA for a while but really haven't done much with it - until now. Much to my wife's eye rolling I really want to start experimenting to see what cool stuff I can do.
can do quite a lot but ironically it seems the most basic of things are the most useful. Wife eye roll is HA's secondary logo
Yeah, honestly, the most useful things I've rigged up are: 1) Turning on the outdoor lights at sunset, and 2) notifying when the washing machine is done so clothes don't sit and sour
wasn't a complete flop when they lowered prices
the little dell netbooks are still one of the most popular atom driven computers they made using those chips
other than the 2-year-and-dead lifespan of the C2538, they perform well in my NAS
I don't think I'd want a PC built from one
@brisk glen Yes and no, Cherry Trail Atoms offer fairly equivalent power consumption and performance to high-end ARM
@static schooner Yeah, that was an unfortunate motherboard design flaw, though it's fixable by soldering on a single resistor
I had mine replaced through RMA supposedly with that fix, and then it died exactly 2 years later. On my third one now
Oof
I get about a week of spontaneous powerdowns and then it just doesn't boot at all, no lights, nothing
In theory it's fixable even after the chip dies if you don't mind adding your own external clock generator
I hope this one is really fixed
The issue is overvoltage to the clock generator killing it over time
eevblog hello
"over time" is comically almost exactly 2 years to the day 🙂
but yeah, I hope they learned their lesson. I also have an 1819+ with a C3538
Hello all together. :)
New here with a question about AVM Fritz!Box Sensors. In which channel i should put my question?
Thanks!
Also has there been any new controllers come out?
Not sure if this is the right place, but is an RPI 3 B+ a good candidate for HA?
Found a great deal on one and want to know if I should use it for that or gift it
I was planning on getting an i3 system but this is cheaper lol
I'm running mine on an original 3B, and it's working well. I would, however, recommend enabling USB boot and running from a SATA SSD connected via USB adapter
The performance and write endurance is significantly better than running from MicroSD
Huh, hadn't thought of that
Thanks for the info!
I have a few extra 128GB SSDs floating around
That'd be perfect. Careful picking your USB-SATA adapter, though. The Pi is a little picky
This is the one I went with, and it's working well: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EWMCPMM
Had to use a chipset supported by the Pi's UBOOT
I'll get that one then! Super cheap too which is nice. Like I said, I was going to go with a NUC but when I saw this for like $26 complete with everything I decided it'd probably work fine. I'm smartifying one bedroom(atleast for now) so only like 5-6 devices max.
It's not a huge system lol
Right now I have it running from my main desktop but that gets shut down every night and that makes HA sad
Which makes me sad
You picked your SATA adapter the same way I did, lol
Google search -> Forum post stating this one works for sure -> add to cart
Just did the same exact thing with a HDMI video grabber haha
That adapter is also USB 3.0, and supports HSPA mode, so if you upgrade to a Pi 4 at any point, you'll get the maximum possible performance out of it
chinese sensor delivery update:
it finally made it through customs, only a kilometer to go
yeah I don't know, theres a pumpkin on the delivery car apparently
oh, it turned in my direction
uff.. these new dirives got at least 60°c almost burning my fingers..
worst thing, they're completly idle
Plot twist: it is actually a dpd submarine
Now if you said HDNL/Yodel I'd believe you...
Lets say id like to add monitoring the well level, any options that are easy enough?
Maybe poe solution since powering sensor would be easier?
@jade tartan you been coming here since 2018, you know better than to ask those questions in this channel!!!
was looking up battery chargers (AA, AAA etc) and holy hell.. when did that market become such a scam hell hole with fake knockoffs of just about any brand lol
atx has a answer for that sure, but I guess he's on one of his dark site adventures
pumpkin express still hitting that neighborhood hard 🧅
pretty sure your tracking app is nothing more than one of those old handheld games where you slide a plastic jet or car up and down and the background cycles behind it and you hear a noise every so often that does a piss poor job at making you feel immersed
it's the official dpd tracking site
I'm sure he gives his best

@forest edge lot of complaining today. Cows didn't come last night?
@atxbyea if you come to Austria (Vienna) make sure you ping me (:
I just opened discord and saw your mention
@tidal bronze you know what we should send you for xmas? a loop of what blown speakers sound like playing some dumb song. that should brighten your holiday.
the Thomas the Dank Engine theme song
only if you turn left
what you should really take a picture of is the driver next to you flipping you off for being on your phone while driving lmao
#GrrrThursdays
dumb message here - now deleted
Don't forget to read the topics for each channel 😉
That question would be #integrations-archived
the YouTube recommendation engine comes up with some pretty interesting recommendations sometimes
yay 📦🎊
did you ask if they were having vehicle troubles?
he didn‘t even rang the bell, just placed the parcel in front of the door.
brace yourselves, aquara zigbee questions are coming in
They're cheap for a reason 😛
(I have bunch, the door/window sensors and the temperature/humidity sensors are great)
I love those sensors. Got them on every external door, including the garage. It's just a shame I rarely leave the house... door sensors are currently less useful than I'd hoped 🤣
My presence detection might as well be a hardcoded 'home'
yeah and despite someone telling me that they‘re misbehaving on the mesh the seem to work fine for me... even battery states are reported instantly after applying the wake trick
I've had no issues with mine
i need to pick up a few more of those aqara sensors for my parents
In case they stray too far apart?
naw i just setup HassOS for them so trying to get an alarm setup and all that now
ST asked for a migration so i migrated them to HA 😛
lol google retires Google Play Music today.....yet i still got a podcast notification from the app 😂
rofl
they will never be able to get rid of it
especially if their device no longer recevies updatse
which is a 99.99% chance
good thing im a pixel user and it wasnt pre-installed haha
iPhone user 😛
I don't think I could ever switch to anything that wasn't a pixel again lol
@forest edge it's a Google product; they'll kill it off eventually 😜
You mean
maybe, but as long as android is around one will carry the torch of no bloat and quick updates.
@clever mortar I have one Aqara door/window sensor that's flaky AF for some reason. It constantly reports that it's open even when it's closed, and has to be actuated a second time to get the correct state
All the other seem to work fine, though 🤷♀️
@subtle pasture when you close the door does it close all the way or does it go back and forth before closing?
It's a window, it closes all the way
i have them on my catio doors and i noticed that if an open/close event come in very quickly my state gets stuck
The sensor and magnet are perfectly aligned
and these doors swing
ah
could be a range issue maybe
but were now approaching #zigbee-archived territory lol
Nah, the sensor doesn't drop and reports good signal strength
About 25% of the time, you slide the window closed, it reports "Closed" for a split second, then goes back to "Open"
Hmm... I wonder if the magnet is backwards inside the housing... that would cause weird issues...
hard wired reed switches ftw
@forest edge Technically these Aqara sensors contain reed switches...
Do any of you by any chance know stuff about STM32F1 chips and how to make a backup of those via USB Serial? 😅
i think prompt 2 is a paid app but I never switched to anything else on ios
Just pull an alpine rootfs with the apk package manager and run your own Minecraft server on that iPhone
@dusky plank this is something far far better
I tried running a Minecraft server with that once, ofc it crashed lol
oh i just saw, this is a real tty
Yah, just make sure to pull an alpine rootfs so you have the apk package manager
wonder how he managed that, this is interesting
Apple didn’t like it in the review
Wait, how @brisk glen
@brisk glen been running the beta. But yes a really nice product
Go to settings @inner lava you can import rootfs
iSH was only available via Testflight for a looooong time. I’ve installed it for almost a year now I think
Heh, this similar to Termux on Android?
It keeps your root fs
nah, this is a real env tty, no remote shell
It’s basically an x86 alpine tty running in a sandbox
Oh wait. I think I have it already due to the Testflight version.
@dusky plank That's what Termux is, lol
A useful shell
It should be the right one
Oh wait I think it did now
i want node on this fucker
It force crashes the app to reload the rootfs
New install method for HA....
Stupid Termux tricks: Download and install a complete Linux distro, then chroot into it
You could actually run HomeAssistant on an Android device that way, yeah
Or on iPhone now...
I've booted full blown Ubuntu on an Nvidia Shield TV inside of Termux, then used a VNC app (also on the the Shield TV) to connect to it and get the GUI up on-screen
Java for what?
Gonna try running a freaking Minecraft server on my iPhone lmao
I'd probably do the same thing there, to be honest. Grab a full Linux environment and chroot/proot into it, then run the Minecraft server there
You'll have a difficult time getting it to run in the native root environment
@subtle pasture there was some reddit post, or something, about building a small cluster from android phones
Sometimes it is even stuff you actually wanted to happen
This is basically just a work-around for not having root permissions. You install another distro, boot it (it shares the kernel with the host, so this isn't virtualization), and then change root (chroot) into it.
Tada, you're now in a full Linux environment with full root permissions.
@odd kindle Totally doable, especially on rooted phones.
i love it already
Hm... What full Linux to use then tho 🤔
@subtle pasture definitly, and arguably not even the worst of ideas. They require very little power, have build in UPS
@inner lava Probably something light with lots of documentation. Plain old Debian, or something RedHat based (CentOS) are decent choices
You can just run Ubuntu, lol
Now to figure out how to do that exactly...
I mean, Ubuntu would be a bit heavy I guess for a super resource limited app on iOS lol
I just have no idea what to do now. Unpack Ubuntu/Debian inside the Alpine rootfs or something? That’s definitely where my Linux skills are not enough anymore lol
I always run CentOS if I can 😛
No need for Ubuntu etc
I've always had better luck with RedHat based distributions, for whatever reason
Wut
@subtle pasture I’ve never been happy with any RH based. Ever 😐
@inner lava recursion
