Hey everyone, i'm looking at improving my home network. I currently have 22 devices on my wireless home network which is powered by an Ubiquiti Amplifi HD (https://amplifi.com/amplifi-hd) with 2 meshpoints. Some of the devices such as a laptop and an ipad have recently started seeing speed degradation as well as an XBox One S.

Their multi-core chips actually have more thermal issues because of the sheer die size... EPYC processors intentionally heat unused cores to make sure the die doesn't thermally fracture when only a few cores are under load

Yeah, the issue with video compression is that the current frame can be made to depend on a number of previous, and upcoming, frames. When doing archival quality encoding, this prevents the encoding process from being threaded efficiently

It becomes a very serialized operation when you're going for the smallest file size for a given level of quality possible

that is mpeg and h264, I don't really know about h265 but future codecs will heavily depend on propability calculations.. so the current codecs just aren't leveraging the available performance yet, much more in the future

h.265 doesn't really differ from h.264 in that regard. The better the compression ratio, the worse the encoder threads

The nice thing about h.265 is isn't not really any harder to decode than h.264 (potentially easier to decode than h.264 for a given subjective level of quality)

Though there hasn't really been much need. Idle power consumption on x86 has been rather good for a long time, and the adoption of "race to idle" power management schemes has improved things further

Ironically, it's the bigger / faster x86 CPUs that have the potential for the best battery life right now. They can spin up to full clockspeed, complete a task, and return to parked/idle, faster than their low-end counterparts, thus saving battery.

That adapter is also USB 3.0, and supports HSPA mode, so if you upgrade to a Pi 4 at any point, you'll get the maximum possible performance out of it

This is basically just a work-around for not having root permissions. You install another distro, boot it (it shares the kernel with the host, so this isn't virtualization), and then change root (chroot) into it.
Tada, you're now in a full Linux environment with full root permissions.

@inner lava Probably something light with lots of documentation. Plain old Debian, or something RedHat based (CentOS) are decent choices

I just have no idea what to do now. Unpack Ubuntu/Debian inside the Alpine rootfs or something? That’s definitely where my Linux skills are not enough anymore lol
