and it worked flawlessly

Obviously you can minimise thr chance of people getting in, security films, extra locks, more advanced alarm systems etc, but generally all of it relies on making it take long enough for someone to scare them away.
Over here it can take a while for a guard to come out to your home, they don't send the police straight away. So lots of people get away before the right people get to the place.
