then again some of the law firms can't/won't exist in the cloud

hushed basalt
#

If you're big enough you can make your own cloud

steel crag
#

or offshore banks

hushed basalt
#

But not many people are big enough

steel crag
#

and those are our main customers

#

@hushed basalt I have customers with their own clouds LOL

wet pilot
#

One of our customers has. They took our stack and have it running on hundreds of nodes

#

On prem for them

steel crag
#

I have one in particular that is ludicrous with the amount of processing power they have in their DC

#

but they load share with other countries

#

and scale up or down accordingly

#

their in-house dev team used to give me heart palpitations tho..... I to this day wonder how they maintained DC access

wet pilot
#

Sock on the door

steel crag

because I've never met a bigger bunch of clumsy people

#

in my life

hushed basalt
#

Is the ability of your company to run it's own datacenter what distingishes itself from competitors. If no: Go public cloud, if yes: you don't need advice from anyone else

#

It's like, if you have a favourite pizza restaurant, is their ability to make great pizza based on them generating their own electricity

steel crag
#

the company in question is large enough to have msft still support unsupported OS'es

wet pilot
#

They damn well better be making their own dough and sauce though

rare condor
#

I went outside to get the mail today, highlight of my day 😄

steel crag
#

sigh

wet pilot
#

I piled dirt into a raised bed we made 😀

steel crag
#

no mail for me unless I drive to postoffice, we don't get mail delivery

wet pilot
#

Autocorrect is a pain in the ass

rare condor
#

nice "liked dirt"

steel crag
#

and we're on lockdown till Tuesday

steel crag
#

so it's not open anyway, nor could I go there without being fined or arrested

rare condor
#

lol Tuesday feeble numbers

hushed basalt
#

We'll be okay as long as clive mcfuckknuckle palmer doesn't force our border open

steel crag
#

well they locked us down for the weekend, then the hurricane came and they were like oh shit they might need to go to the hardware store

#

it'll be forced open, just like they did here

#

Chicago convention or some bullshit

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt At our Uni he covered all the billboards in Clive Ads, constantly vandalised

Friendly warning about politics

rare condor

steel crag
#

#

sorry wasn't being political

wet pilot
#

We're getting close to the line

#

I know, but these things tend to go there

steel crag
#

if I stumbled over the line, push my drunk ass back over

wet pilot
#

Haha I'd rather be friendly early than mean later

steel crag
#

well either works for me 😄

#

I'm cannon fodder aka the FNG

wet pilot
#

Lol

steel crag
#

I expect some flak at some point

#

I'm shocked I haven't been told to shut up yet

rare condor
#

Is best OS politics allowed?

wet pilot
#

Everything is a hot topic in the US right now so I'm being extra preemptive

steel crag
#

that's under religion @rare condor

rare condor
#

hahaha

steel crag
#

@wet pilot I'm in The Bahamas

wet pilot
#

Gotcha, I was thinking florida

steel crag
#

like I live here, not on vacation

wet pilot
#

I remember now from the other night

steel crag
#

have to clarify because some people think this place is one big hotel

wet pilot
#

Talking about batteries

steel crag

LOL

rare condor

Haha

I have a few because I'm a nicotine addict

rare condor
#

So good they power your drill, vibrator and car. So versatile

steel crag
#

I do for exactly the same reason

wet pilot
#

Abuse the hell out of the poor things

steel crag
#

the nicotine not the vibrator

rare condor
#

trying the back track, too late truth is out 😛

steel crag
#

been vaping since 2013

wet pilot
#

About the same I think

steel crag
#

been using vibrators since never

#

so not really backtracking

#

LOL

rare condor
#

just pulling your leg mate

#

all good your secret is with me

steel crag
#

I'm aware, my sense of humor is very dry

wet pilot
#

Lol dry humor vs ausi humor

steel crag
#

@rare condor that's only because you .... I've said too much

#

I'm also facetious to a fault

wet pilot
#

@rare condor how hard has it been to hold back the cussing? XD

steel crag
#

cussing? there's cussing here? where?

wet pilot
#

I used to work the APAC hours and that was a fun time with some colorful language

rare condor
#

I just miss C***, 'mericans get real touchy when I call them a sick C---

wet pilot
#

Lol pretty much

rare condor
#

I call my boss a c--- all the time, its a context specific word, for example don't use it with family

#

very context specifc

static schooner
#

In America, I don't think there's any appropriate context

steel crag
#

I can think of one that's got a bulletproof limo

#

just saying

rare condor
#

What about in a programming scrum meeting or when watching a footy match with your coworkers?

steel crag
#

Haxxa you have to tell them what a scrum is

#

and say soccer but mean NFL

hushed basalt
#

Everyone knows there's only one true debate

#

2 space indentation vs 4 space indentation

static schooner
#

all our regular program updates/software CR/issue meetings are called "scrums"

steel crag
#

do you know what a scrum really is tho

#

because it's pushing the opposing team off the ball, not having a huddle

#

😄

static schooner
#

rugby, right?

steel crag
#

yes sir

hushed basalt
#

All sport ^

wet pilot
#

Not hockey!

#

Which I'm watching right now

static schooner
steel crag
#

there's no ball in ice hockey, only field hockey

hushed basalt
#

So it's hand stick instead of foot ball or hand ball basket

rare condor
#

I learnt so much bs about cheerleading when I was dating in highschool. Trying to be supportive.

wet pilot
#

Haha

rare condor
#

Still I do like AFL a lot 😛

hushed basalt
#

Eastern states have cheerleading?

steel crag
#

FL has it

wet pilot
#

AFL is great

#

I enjoy it every time I watch it

hushed basalt
#

I've never seen a cheerleader

rare condor
#

yeah, my ex-gf was a flyer, top in state

wet pilot
#

Those guys are nuts

rare condor
#

Do you get what is going on though?

steel crag
#

apparently color guard and cheerleaders aren't the same

wet pilot
#

For the most part

steel crag
#

who knew this

hushed basalt
#

egg gets passed around from one side of the grass to the other

#

people cheer

steel crag
#

beer is drunk, can't forget that

rare condor
#

Like American's seem to struggle when I go to matches with them, mainly marks seem to confuse our clients, they're like why did he stop with the ball

wet pilot
#

That's the free kick thing right?

rare condor
#

No when they catch it

hushed basalt
#

My girlfriend lived next door to an eagles player

rare condor
#

over 15 metes its a stoppage called a mark

steel crag
#

why did he play with eagles and not a ball?

wet pilot
#

Ah ok

rare condor
#

they can continue running or stop and kick it again

wet pilot
#

Oh, that is what I was thinking of

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt In Melbourne at least one person in neighbourhood is afl player for obv reasons.

#

Is it popular in Perth?

hushed basalt
#

The fans or the players?

rare condor
#

fans

hushed basalt
#

Massive as anywhere else I guess

wet pilot
#

The hockey team I follow had an ausi on it for a bit

hushed basalt
#

Grand final is a great time to drive or go to a restaurant

rare condor
#

Sure but rugby is bigger in NSW and QLD

hushed basalt
#

Quiet af

#

I'd say afl is top here

rare condor
#

ah good to know I can live there then 😛

wet pilot
#

If y'all want to watch any hockey games there are live ones running right now

rare condor
#

I used to play hockey

wet pilot
#

Been a good game so far

rare condor
#

Nice

wet pilot
#

2nd day of the season restart

steel crag
#

I've only been to one hockey match, and it was in Sweden

wet pilot
#

They all went to 2 cities in Canada so they have a better shot at staying healthy

#

The swedes are legit

rare condor
#

@hushed basalt sorry lounge has become sport chat now

steel crag
#

was really interesting going in with all the armored vehicles parked out front

wet pilot
#

Very technical players

#

High speed, high skill

steel crag
#

I've never been to a sporting event in my life where I had to choose which team I supported in advance and had to catch an appropriate train

#

LOL

wet pilot
#

Lol

steel crag
#

I was like I don't know any of these teams, them: but you must pick before you buy your ticket for the game and train

wet pilot
#

We have a local minor league team here, we showed up wearing jerseys for their parent club's rivals

#

Stupid cheap though

#

Eh, just pick the home team, can't really do wrong

steel crag
#

it wasn't until about 30 mins into the game when the flaming projectiles started flying across the stadium did I realize maybe there's a little bit of rivalry going on here

wet pilot
#

Hahaha

steel crag
#

@wet pilot neither was the home team, both teams brought in by train to neutral stadium

#

of course I knew none of these, not speaking swedish and the one swede that was with us thought it would be a good laugh

wet pilot
#

That's amazing

#

Usually doesn't get that bad in the US unless you're in Philly

hushed basalt
#

You might as well be talking Dutch to me

steel crag
#

well Dutch I could decipher

#

LOL

wet pilot
#

Vancouver, Canada is known to riot at times though

steel crag
#

I speak a few languages, swedish is not one of them

wet pilot
#

@hushed basalt is car racing also a no for you?

hushed basalt

I own a 400hp twin turbo hatchback

wet pilot

Oh, twin turbo

steel crag

I have a twin turbo wagon

Hmm

I know nothing that has that stock

steel crag

e-tune Legacy

wet pilot

Gotcha

steel crag

technically I have two twin turbo wagons

wet pilot

I had a focus ST for a bit but sold it because I never drove it and it's value started going up die to ford killing it here

I'm sorry to hear that, no one should ever have to own a Ford

steel crag

well maybe they figured out bushings finally

wet pilot
#

Eh, the stock motor mounts are still too soft

steel crag

LOL well I guess not

wet pilot

I was gonna wait for the warranty to exp before seriously modding it but sold it instead

steel crag

I replaced everything on my STi

whiteline suspension from the ball joint to the top

upgraded sways and links, tie rods, everything

wet pilot

Top mods for the STs were cooling related though

#

The intercooler is way too small stock

steel crag

well with Subaru's everything is a mod

you basically strip to chassis, throw away, and start over if you want

wet pilot

Yup. And an ancient drivetrain at this point

steel crag
#

yup

#

I have both 6speed and 5speed gearboxes

#

a few diffs, a few drive shafts, a few blocks spare

spare parts I accumulate mostly get sold before I can use them because shit won't break

wet pilot

Lol

#

Should drop one of those into an original beetle

steel crag

actually

#

thought of making a dune buggy with the beetle chassis and a EJ20

#

I no longer have the kind of access I used to have to a modification shop or trust me this year I would've really made some toys

wet pilot
#

Just get a welder and some scrap then work your way up to fabrication

steel crag
#

that's the thing, with my buddies shop I just showed up with my parts

#

and went to town

#

he moved, the bastard

#

oh I can weld, I just used to use all his tools!

#

over the years I've lost a lot of my tools, but I'm building back up there. I wanna get a welder at some point tho, but I bought a lift and installed it in his shop

#

that's how much work I did there

wet pilot

Lol wow

steel crag

yup, he used it too but when my cars came in he took whatever was up there down and put my car up

one of these days I'll get around to putting my pics in a good gallery solution

We have mods from all over but not as many around this time.

wet pilot

Early days of slack was a fancy irc

dawn pewter

Back when you could pingbomb someone when they pissed you off.

wet pilot

I think discord took a lot of that backend

Lol

steel crag

wet pilot

Gotcha, that can be worth it sometimes

I did a lateral like that a few years ago

dawn pewter

That's what I'm up against. 17 years and public-sector money or start over at a private-sector with a big raise but a lot of uncertainty.

wet pilot

Hit 20, "retire" and then go private

dawn pewter

Not a bad straegy.

wet pilot

dawn pewter

Gotta be up in 7.5. Thanks to all my new people. Greatly appreciate all of the help over in #templates-archived . Time to go look at the Moon for a bit and then go to bed.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah it's like stay at my old career or change careers with uncertainty but realistically earn double in 5 years

wet pilot
#

Be stuck at 3% raises or jump to a new scale. I get it. I was stuck on the support path for far too long

hushed basalt
#

Didn't even get 3% last round

deft pewter
#

3% makes some of my old jobs look generous.

#

Even though I'm still with the same business now, the 15% they did for me this year just because (not an annual appraisal) came as a surprise.

#

They must've realised they were underpaying me 😄

#

But there's a big difference between a job (I was tech support) and a career (software engineering).

wet pilot
#

This company has been pretty good about their merit raises annually. I've had a market correction and a few title changes with them though and that has helped a lot

#

On my 4th title in 5 years

deft pewter

Hoping to get my next title early next year. However, they've put the progression program on hold temporarily while they review the process 😐

#

Lazy day today but tomorrow I'm going to make a massaman curry.

#

Cheating slightly for the curry paste so I don't have to buy 1001 ingredients but doing the rest myself.

#

Like who even has all this stuff just sitting around?

Cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cumin, bay leaves, nutmeg and mace are combined with more local flavors such as dried chili peppers, coriander, lemongrass, galangal, white pepper, shrimp paste, shallots and garlic to make massaman curry paste.

hushed basalt
#

I've made an awesome curry that's similar to massaman

#

I use keens curry powder it's a very good curry base

#

Onion, garlic, curry paste, tomato paste, chicken stock, and kaffir lime leaves are the key

#

And tastes 5/5

deft pewter
#

That sounds awesome. I'll have to get some lime leaves in next time I do a curry.

hushed basalt
#

I used fresh ones,

#

But i bought some jar ones today to see if they're any good

#

I will get a tree when we have our forever home

#

I wouldn't bother with trying to make your own curry powder/paste you need soooo many ingredients

#

I can cook japanese, indian and thai style curries using just keens curry powder

deft pewter
#

Yeah, it helps to have a good base when so many curries have common ingredients.

hushed basalt
#

I store my recipes in plantuml but you should be able to read it

just got a small old machine with a i7 3770 and 4 gig ram for free,
would you keep running HA on a rpi or change to this one?

i'd move HA over to it, it will be a ton faster

assuming that machine has an ssd in it

yep it has 128gb ssd

ok well then I'll move it tonight to this box,
any recommendations?
vmware? proxmox?

how do I install debian/anything else headless?

i can however write sth to the ssd

#

i'd just get the dp to whatever adapter

#

gonna be a pita otherwise

#

either that or put the drive in another machine and install to it that way via a live cd

#

make sure you unplug any other disks to avoid disaster

clever mortar
#

You could create a kickstart/preseed file for it to auto-install too

wet pilot

could but that's a lot more effort 😛

clever mortar

Maybe faster than waiting for the adapter to be delivered though 😛

wet pilot

but the adapter will probably be useful in the future if the thing ever has problems

Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.

When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:

  1. What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
  2. What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
  3. Is the problem uniform or erratic?
  4. What's the exact error message?
  5. When did it arise?
  6. What exactly don't you "get"?
  7. Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?

MS aren't as evil as most people make out. They could've billed people a ton for GitHub and NPM when they acquired those. Instead, they've embraced open source.

@last plaza did you ever use spring data with JPA?

#

it made a LOT of stuff dead simple

wet pilot
#

GH actions are pretty slick

#

it forced bitbucket to respond too

last plaza
#

I love spring framework. Can’t live without it. The IOC is built into the .net core now, and in fact .net core uses IOC a lot internally.

#

At work, we have been using Springboot a lot lately.

last dirge
#

spring boot + data/JPA is fantastic

last plaza
last dirge
#

if you haven't seen spring data with JPA you're missin out

#

one thing I added to the project I mostly work on recently is a JPA metadata generator

#

so when you use the Criteria API you'll break code if something gets changed accidentally in the entities

last plaza
#

Awesome. That’s the best combination in Java world for sure!

last dirge
#

mainly because the other people on the team don't know how to write tests that are actually tests

Took years for the org to adopt the practices, but it is worth it.

last dirge

last plaza

deft pewter

I remember having to test on production. And I remember my boss asking why so many things break 😐

last plaza
#

Why not develop in production environment? @rare cradle

deft pewter
#

As much as I hate writing tests, tests are better than no tests.

rare cradle
#

@last plaza haha, I kinda have the feeling that the only reason is that C# has to be compiled first 😛

#

At least we are using bitbucket.
But maaan we have a long way. I see it as a way to grow and have some influence, hopefully 😛

last plaza
#

You have to have the csc.exe in production- because of just in time compiler. Technically you can code there.

#

But maaan we have a long way. I see it as a way to grow and have some influence, hopefully 😛
@rare cradle there is your golden opportunity- make sure you surround yourself with those who actually listen to@you and implement. Otherwise you’ll get frustrated and leave.

rare cradle

#

Feels like I'm doing half the work of our architects/BA's for most stories.

But hat doesn't mean that I can't create my own stories and then do TDD from there 🙂

dusky plank

rare cradle

@dusky plank my last job (here in Denmark) was kinda like that :)
That part of the job was nice! 🙂

#

The fact that I didn't agree with the stories and the direction of the product is an entirely different thing 😛

dusky plank
#

so standard gitflow doesn‘t count in staging? must be non-webdev work then 😄

it felt dirty having to resolve the conflicts in a release branch and commit 🙂

gitflow just makes branches

branches get deployed wherever

there's no rigid workflow

wet pilot

dusky plank
#

mhmmm never seen that in practice

wet pilot
#

dev is newer than release

last dirge
#

all of our "deployment" CI builds are parameterized so you pick whatever branch you want to deploy

#

the job that actually deploys stuff to production auto-tags the branch with a timestamp

#

so if we need to roll back or make a branch from that, it's dead simple

#

@dusky plank if you can get in the habit of making a separate branch for each feature or set of functions, you'll be in a good spot

#

it's way easier to merge in X branches to a release branch to include features then adding commits to roll back changes you don't want

and if needed, you can completely trash the release branch and re-merge

So... I managed to get Windows Fax and Scan + Windows dailer.exe to use a SIP Trunk

Fuck if I know

But its funny as hell to just yoink peoples numbers in

#

and they get the fax noise

So apparently my power supply for my laptop has failed.. its a Asus G74. And I just the power supply back and in March and a new battery in June.

@hushed basalt whats a shit ending?

hushed basalt

Which one

Mike judge

#

Silicon Valley ending sucked, but idiocracy and office space were fine.

hushed basalt

The final part of office space was funny with the stapler and the fire

#

But I feel like his final actd are just weak compared to the first ones

Just a great movie. Could have only been made better by getting Anniston nekkid 🙂

that's the wurst piano I've ever seen

I guess it'd be too dependent on the individual sausages to turn it into a chained resistive setup

Which chat should i use for question relating to improving the speed of energy monitoring reporting of the tp link plug in HA

mild tapir
#

@steel crag You want it?

#

This took me forever

#

Finding Working modems and Drivers was a stupid PITA

#

Go into device manager and right click the com0com ports and "Update Driver" else the Cert Validation fails

#

Other than that, it works beautifully

#

If you have HylaFAX on a server, that works with this too

clever mortar
#

@unkempt night If you're looking at developing there's various dev channels 😉

"hey this sucks" followed by "and this is how you'd fix it" is always welcome

Unless the fix it involves the application of high energy physics... actually, specifically if...

lethal ice
#

Ugh well this has highlighted a flaw in my setup. Everything is local controlled but because of how I have HA set up for external access with an SSL cert, my internet is down and now I can't access it lol

Use https:// with the LAN IP @lethal ice

jade tartan
#

who happens to be using pi hole?

shy comet
#

👋

jade tartan
#

it's just DNS level blocking right? couldnt i do that within most routers?

shy comet
#

yea you can always just find the list and add the domains that way if you want

#

pihole just gives you a nice interface and easy way to detect what to unblock/block etc...

#

and easy to turn it off

jade tartan
#

hmm

#

well im fine usually, i kinda just wana block YT's app

shy comet
jade tartan
#

so maybe i can just load yt's ad domain in

#

meant to say ads in yt app

shy comet
#

i think they added per device recently

#

ah yea

#

there are some guides on that

#

but you have to keep up with it since google is always changing things

#

check out reddit lots of examples on how they do it there

jade tartan
#

hmm

#

any idea if the pi hole add on is good?

#

or does it need the whole power of the PI to be able to do pi hole well?

last plaza
#

PiHole doesn’t do a good job of blocking YT ads.

jade tartan
#

word

#

not a huge deal, but i was watching the app in bed and i never do, and an ad poped up and i stoped watching

#

lol

#

on my main pc i have enough adblocking and scrip blocking that nothing gets through

steel crag
#

@mild tapir I'd love to play with it, thank you!

forest edge
#

youtube is actively changing how they implement those ads. ublock even takes a few days to adjust

lethal ice
#

@scenic radish that worked in a browser. Apparently doesn't in the app. Thanks

#

The future is very crippling. Service outage and you're like "ARGH the internet is out, I can't work!  I guess I better go do something fun while I wait.  ARGH!  The internet is out!"

i was just previously using google home for everything, i am still yet to decide how to make Google Home / HA play best together

well if you've added the devices to HA, Google home works easy with Nabu Casa

well you don't ask in here

it is, and it can be very version specific if you're just following a random guide

I've upgraded my HA and lost everything because I didn't read the release notes to find out things got broken and the update didn't go thru

used a guide and lost the whole thing

because it was for another version/way to install HA

nothing to do with HA at all actually

Then... go to the Tasmota Discord 😉

forest edge

be like telling Brian to go to Home & Gardens Discord when he brings up his rain barrel stuff etc

He's asking about Tasmota

So, getting help with Tasmota would seem to be a good topic for the Tasmota Discord?

forest edge

more to do with Portish and the RF Bridge than Tasmota, i just PM'd him. I can't help with that particular situation anways cause I never went that route

Although we are in the lounge so I foolishly thought it would be headrom for these type of questions 😛

My mind was blown by your simple suggestion that would actually be quite effective.

I suspect it'll just move the "default channel" problem elsewhere 😂 Who knows though... 🤔

in my limited dataset, python devs who use Django didn't have exp with building python wheels from scratch or docker but did have a strong understanding of python itself and unit testing

flat needle
#

What are ya'll using for whole-house-audio? I was thinking each endpoint could be dumb speakers + a rpi, but what software to hook it all together? Ideally I'd have zones that play different things, or at least have toggle on/off (play downstairs, quiet upstairs). Source is spotify for the most part.

Sonos for me

flat needle

Is sonos only speakers, or do they make wireless dac components that I can plug into my existing speakers?

clever mortar

Check the Sonos site?

I believe so, but 🤷

orchid rose

I believe so too. There are a few wireless DAC options that people use, most notably Google Chromecast Audio

#

I believe most of the major amplifier manufacturers such as Yamaha or Denon offer their own solutions

young sigil
#

Two Yamaha Rx-v685 amps. 5.1 in two rooms, stereo in two others.

flat needle
#

@young sigil is their multiroom setup controllable via HA?

young sigil
#

Yes it is.

flat needle
#

Ideally what I want is just some boxes that can be streamed to from a central location. Ideally physically small, then they plug into whatever happens to be in that room.

#

used 'ideally' twice there...

clever mortar

You need a tardis

#

Pop back in time, grab some ChromeCast Audio devices 😛

flat needle

they discontinued those?

Yeah :(
