If you're big enough you can make your own cloud
or offshore banks
But not many people are big enough
and those are our main customers
@hushed basalt I have customers with their own clouds LOL
One of our customers has. They took our stack and have it running on hundreds of nodes
On prem for them
I have one in particular that is ludicrous with the amount of processing power they have in their DC
but they load share with other countries
and scale up or down accordingly
their in-house dev team used to give me heart palpitations tho..... I to this day wonder how they maintained DC access
Sock on the door
Is the ability of your company to run it's own datacenter what distingishes itself from competitors. If no: Go public cloud, if yes: you don't need advice from anyone else
It's like, if you have a favourite pizza restaurant, is their ability to make great pizza based on them generating their own electricity
the company in question is large enough to have msft still support unsupported OS'es
They damn well better be making their own dough and sauce though
I went outside to get the mail today, highlight of my day 😄
sigh
I piled dirt into a raised bed we made 😀
no mail for me unless I drive to postoffice, we don't get mail delivery
Autocorrect is a pain in the ass
nice "liked dirt"
and we're on lockdown till Tuesday
so it's not open anyway, nor could I go there without being fined or arrested
lol Tuesday feeble numbers
We'll be okay as long as clive mcfuckknuckle palmer doesn't force our border open
well they locked us down for the weekend, then the hurricane came and they were like oh shit they might need to go to the hardware store
it'll be forced open, just like they did here
Chicago convention or some bullshit
@hushed basalt At our Uni he covered all the billboards in Clive Ads, constantly vandalised
Friendly warning about politics
k
if I stumbled over the line, push my drunk ass back over
Haha I'd rather be friendly early than mean later
Lol
Is best OS politics allowed?
Everything is a hot topic in the US right now so I'm being extra preemptive
that's under religion @rare condor
hahaha
@wet pilot I'm in The Bahamas
Gotcha, I was thinking florida
like I live here, not on vacation
I remember now from the other night
have to clarify because some people think this place is one big hotel
Talking about batteries
LOL
18650 ftw forever
So good they power your drill, vibrator and car. So versatile
I do for exactly the same reason
Abuse the hell out of the poor things
the nicotine not the vibrator
trying the back track, too late truth is out 😛
been vaping since 2013
About the same I think
I'm aware, my sense of humor is very dry
Lol dry humor vs ausi humor
@rare condor that's only because you .... I've said too much
I'm also facetious to a fault
@rare condor how hard has it been to hold back the cussing? XD
cussing? there's cussing here? where?
I used to work the APAC hours and that was a fun time with some colorful language
I just miss C***, 'mericans get real touchy when I call them a sick C---
Lol pretty much
I call my boss a c--- all the time, its a context specific word, for example don't use it with family
very context specifc
In America, I don't think there's any appropriate context
What about in a programming scrum meeting or when watching a footy match with your coworkers?
Everyone knows there's only one true debate
2 space indentation vs 4 space indentation
all our regular program updates/software CR/issue meetings are called "scrums"
do you know what a scrum really is tho
because it's pushing the opposing team off the ball, not having a huddle
😄
rugby, right?
yes sir
With all the filth in The Aristocrats (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0436078/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) at least one guy wouldn't say "the c word"
there's no ball in ice hockey, only field hockey
So it's hand stick instead of foot ball or hand ball basket
I learnt so much bs about cheerleading when I was dating in highschool. Trying to be supportive.
Haha
Still I do like AFL a lot 😛
Eastern states have cheerleading?
FL has it
I've never seen a cheerleader
yeah, my ex-gf was a flyer, top in state
Those guys are nuts
Do you get what is going on though?
apparently color guard and cheerleaders aren't the same
For the most part
who knew this
beer is drunk, can't forget that
Like American's seem to struggle when I go to matches with them, mainly marks seem to confuse our clients, they're like why did he stop with the ball
That's the free kick thing right?
No when they catch it
My girlfriend lived next door to an eagles player
over 15 metes its a stoppage called a mark
why did he play with eagles and not a ball?
Ah ok
they can continue running or stop and kick it again
Oh, that is what I was thinking of
@hushed basalt In Melbourne at least one person in neighbourhood is afl player for obv reasons.
Is it popular in Perth?
The fans or the players?
fans
Massive as anywhere else I guess
The hockey team I follow had an ausi on it for a bit
Grand final is a great time to drive or go to a restaurant
Sure but rugby is bigger in NSW and QLD
ah good to know I can live there then 😛
If y'all want to watch any hockey games there are live ones running right now
I used to play hockey
Been a good game so far
Nice
2nd day of the season restart
I've only been to one hockey match, and it was in Sweden
They all went to 2 cities in Canada so they have a better shot at staying healthy
The swedes are legit
@hushed basalt sorry lounge has become sport chat now
was really interesting going in with all the armored vehicles parked out front
I've never been to a sporting event in my life where I had to choose which team I supported in advance and had to catch an appropriate train
LOL
Lol
I was like I don't know any of these teams, them: but you must pick before you buy your ticket for the game and train
We have a local minor league team here, we showed up wearing jerseys for their parent club's rivals
Stupid cheap though
Eh, just pick the home team, can't really do wrong
it wasn't until about 30 mins into the game when the flaming projectiles started flying across the stadium did I realize maybe there's a little bit of rivalry going on here
Hahaha
@wet pilot neither was the home team, both teams brought in by train to neutral stadium
of course I knew none of these, not speaking swedish and the one swede that was with us thought it would be a good laugh
You might as well be talking Dutch to me
Vancouver, Canada is known to riot at times though
I speak a few languages, swedish is not one of them
@hushed basalt is car racing also a no for you?
Cars 🤢
Hahaah
telco is tech and home insulation only
I found skydiving uninteresting
I own a 400hp twin turbo hatchback
Focus RS?
Oh, twin turbo
e-tune Legacy
Gotcha
technically I have two twin turbo wagons
I had a focus ST for a bit but sold it because I never drove it and it's value started going up die to ford killing it here
I'm sorry to hear that, no one should ever have to own a Ford
Lol only 2 failures on that car. One was a hose that slipped off because it wasn't used enough to get checked and something with the evap system that warranty picked up
well maybe they figured out bushings finally
Eh, the stock motor mounts are still too soft
LOL well I guess not
I was gonna wait for the warranty to exp before seriously modding it but sold it instead
I replaced everything on my STi
whiteline suspension from the ball joint to the top
upgraded sways and links, tie rods, everything
Top mods for the STs were cooling related though
The intercooler is way too small stock
well with Subaru's everything is a mod
you basically strip to chassis, throw away, and start over if you want
Yup. And an ancient drivetrain at this point
yup
I have both 6speed and 5speed gearboxes
a few diffs, a few drive shafts, a few blocks spare
spare parts I accumulate mostly get sold before I can use them because shit won't break
actually
thought of making a dune buggy with the beetle chassis and a EJ20
I no longer have the kind of access I used to have to a modification shop or trust me this year I would've really made some toys
Just get a welder and some scrap then work your way up to fabrication
that's the thing, with my buddies shop I just showed up with my parts
and went to town
he moved, the bastard
oh I can weld, I just used to use all his tools!
over the years I've lost a lot of my tools, but I'm building back up there. I wanna get a welder at some point tho, but I bought a lift and installed it in his shop
that's how much work I did there
Lol wow
yup, he used it too but when my cars came in he took whatever was up there down and put my car up
one of these days I'll get around to putting my pics in a good gallery solution
living in a grey market we get some amazing cars not available in the USA
😄
Just had a phone call with an internal recruiter
Might have a new job very soon if all goes well
hacs versioning is so quick and fast
My apologies. Discord is different from the old chat systems I'm used to. Should've brought my life comments in here.
@hushed basalt just bullied my way through a title bump and a raise by tangently hinting that I might start looking
@dawn pewter no worries, things get a bit more lax in the us overnights
We have mods from all over but not as many around this time.
Utc-4 here
just warning you tho, I've been warned. So you could be keeping bad company @dawn pewter
I'm also -4
Haha
It's an open secret that I'm looking and my engineer offerring his resignation last week only makes me more valuable.
I don't go for politics either
I never speak them, but people at my company know my politics and stand well clear.
Not appropriate in polite company
oooh I'm polite company now y'all
That and religion
I'm moving on up
Only thing I've ever even been spoken to, much less warned, are when I lash out. But that's OFFICE politics.
Haha
They know I'm a big old Democrat atheist homosexual.
I don't bring it up and neither do they.
Sorry. You didn't need to know that.
Lol
I was about to say for someone who doesn't bring it up
I'm 3.5 drinks in, everything is good until y'all start arguing
But I have the hammer and can totally use it
heheh
Lol
This reminds me of my old IRC days.
yes, it is very much the same but different
Early days of slack was a fancy irc
Back when you could pingbomb someone when they pissed you off.
smurf em if you really got pissed
We have a bot command reminder for that
Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.
My script was something like "Please watch your modem lights carefully...."
I can't remember, TBH
those were the IRCD's
Haha
No, this was before that
I have a server I'm still connected to. They set up an integration with discord though so I'm pretty lazy and just use that
Had a docker container running a client but it doesn't like my dual wan setup
Can't be arsed to fix it
I was chess@netflix.net
Someone bitched at me when it hit phnx.9 to do something about it
You're gonna make me drink more
I'm not sure where we're even going with this
down memory lane, to the bar, and back again
chess@netcom.com.... RadioPhag

@wet pilot the pay is a little bit lower than my previous job
But I was at the ceiling of my last job
And this is entry level at a new career
So a lot more room to grow
That's what I'm up against. 17 years and public-sector money or start over at a private-sector with a big raise but a lot of uncertainty.
Hit 20, "retire" and then go private
Not a bad straegy.
Gotta lock in that pension
Gotta be up in 7.5. Thanks to all my new people. Greatly appreciate all of the help over in #templates-archived . Time to go look at the Moon for a bit and then go to bed.
Pension. HA!
I'll be back tomorrow.
Thanks again
Cya
Yeah it's like stay at my old career or change careers with uncertainty but realistically earn double in 5 years
Be stuck at 3% raises or jump to a new scale. I get it. I was stuck on the support path for far too long
Didn't even get 3% last round
3% makes some of my old jobs look generous.
Even though I'm still with the same business now, the 15% they did for me this year just because (not an annual appraisal) came as a surprise.
They must've realised they were underpaying me 😄
But there's a big difference between a job (I was tech support) and a career (software engineering).
This company has been pretty good about their merit raises annually. I've had a market correction and a few title changes with them though and that has helped a lot
On my 4th title in 5 years
Hoping to get my next title early next year. However, they've put the progression program on hold temporarily while they review the process 😐
Hi, fellows. I wrote a small article about HA and I need several reviewers to evaluate. Ping me if you're interested.
@nimble crown you should just post the link
All this YAML in HA prepared me for this morning's boring admin at work. 385 lines added by hand to our Swagger docs. 🤢
I can’t the iOS app to remember to use a port number! Frustrating!!!
I couldn't be bothered to make a full-on Croque Monsieur, so I settled for a gruyere and cranberry toastie instead.
I made chicken parmigiana tonight
So much better than the crap that gets delivered from a restaurant
30 minutes old
Yeah, fresh always wins.
I'm not that great in the kitchen but I still appreciate a proper home-cooked meal.
Lazy day today but tomorrow I'm going to make a massaman curry.
Cheating slightly for the curry paste so I don't have to buy 1001 ingredients but doing the rest myself.
Like who even has all this stuff just sitting around?
Cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, cumin, bay leaves, nutmeg and mace are combined with more local flavors such as dried chili peppers, coriander, lemongrass, galangal, white pepper, shrimp paste, shallots and garlic to make massaman curry paste.
I've made an awesome curry that's similar to massaman
I use keens curry powder it's a very good curry base
Onion, garlic, curry paste, tomato paste, chicken stock, and kaffir lime leaves are the key
And tastes 5/5
That sounds awesome. I'll have to get some lime leaves in next time I do a curry.
I used fresh ones,
But i bought some jar ones today to see if they're any good
I will get a tree when we have our forever home
I wouldn't bother with trying to make your own curry powder/paste you need soooo many ingredients
I can cook japanese, indian and thai style curries using just keens curry powder
Yeah, it helps to have a good base when so many curries have common ingredients.
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
I store my recipes in plantuml but you should be able to read it
First time I've seen a recipe in markdown 😂 the recipe looks good
just got a small old machine with a i7 3770 and 4 gig ram for free,
would you keep running HA on a rpi or change to this one?
i love those little micro form factor PCs
i'd move HA over to it, it will be a ton faster
assuming that machine has an ssd in it
yep it has 128gb ssd
ok well then I'll move it tonight to this box,
any recommendations?
vmware? proxmox?
maybe I will run plain supervised docker and qemu+kvm besides that
I run my HA install on an old dell 7470 laptop with a generic ubuntu install and HA supervised
well the i7 6600u is 3 years younger than the 3770 I will use 😛
i'm running a lot more than HA on it though 🙂
I run a lot more on my pis than only HA 😄
heh. I finally got my OrangePi Zero LTS's
I just didn't get any power supplies for them. LO
So, today I get some PiSwitches, and tomorrow the power supplies.
so guys i have a challenge
I have vga and DP but no cable / monitor / adapter combo available for this x86 machine...
how do I install debian/anything else headless?
i can however write sth to the ssd
i'd just get the dp to whatever adapter
gonna be a pita otherwise
either that or put the drive in another machine and install to it that way via a live cd
make sure you unplug any other disks to avoid disaster
You could create a kickstart/preseed file for it to auto-install too
could but that's a lot more effort 😛
Maybe faster than waiting for the adapter to be delivered though 😛
heh true
but the adapter will probably be useful in the future if the thing ever has problems
Pffft, don't bring logic into this... 🤣
nah for this case I'll buy a vga cable but no adapter 😛 thanks, will try the live cd route, lets see if this machine has UEFI enabled...
yep, seems like it doesn't like the installation which successfully boots on my nuc
silver lining about being broke before starting smart home is all batteries shouldn't die around same time
lol, just had to re-order a 6-pack of packages of six CR2032s because all my sensors died yesterday 🙂
batteries 🤢
sonoma 🤢
A bunch are only used in AppDaemon "apps" for background activities, so I sometimes don't notice that they've died until I look at the AppDaemon logs and see tons of errors
make a dashboard and monitor them?
I have a Lovelace tab for them, but if it's not on the default page, it's out of sight, out of mind. I should create a single sensor that tells me if any of them are "unavailable" and put that up front
it'll be my 6th "something's wrong!" conditional card on my main page
send yourself notifications when you're near a store 😄 i prefer not to buy batteries on gas stations or anything near me but maybe you are in a better place
I buy "bulk packs" from Amazon and they just show up at my door
just beware of counterfeits
how do you repair the hue sensors? last time I did I had to repair and set them up again completely new
how do you repair the hue sensors?
@dusky plank https://tenor.com/view/whatsup-smash-watermelon-gif-6102662
I weep for you
@dusky plank I think custom:auto-entities is actually a better solution than the conditional cards that I was using before, so thanks for that!
and thus endeth Home Assistant-related support in #the-water-cooler
😂
now that's some #the-water-cooler material
Ohhh, I miss Gallagher. 🙂
Gifs are back in the lounge then?
So...
Why don't I have one... And why isn't there an integration yet?
You live in a time when you can have an autonomous robot sidekick waiting to greet you when you come home. His name’s Vector. Learn more at Anki.com/Vector. #HeyVector
Vector is available for pre-order today on Anki.com and Kickstarter (US Only), and will release in th...
Darn
Wasn't it just like a bad version of Siri that could push a cube around?
I'mma take a look see
So... Google and ADT partnership eh...
oh well ADT is now skynet
Yeah have to wonder what kind of access this gives them... Now even pushier salespeople and worse contracts!
Yeah, security system contracts alone are just as bad, if not worse, than Cell phone contracts.
Wonder if this is why Google ended Works with nest last year
indubitably
oh well
I'm gonna have lots of time to play with HA now, just got locked down another 2 weeks
well, in all fairness they only bought 6% of the company...not exactly a controlling share, maybe a board seat
I'm glad we don't have to deal with any of that crap
Use simple zigbee sensors and standard cameras and never ever have to worry about big tech prying, their shitty security practices or discontinued services
Let alone the service fees
Don't ask to ask, just ask your question. Then people can answer when they're around.
When you do ask a question, try to provide as much background detail as possible. Ask yourself these questions first so that others don't have to:
- What version of the Home Assistant are you running? (remember, last isn't a version)
- What exactly are you trying to do that won't work?
- Is the problem uniform or erratic?
- What's the exact error message?
- When did it arise?
- What exactly don't you "get"?
- Can you share sample code, ideally with line errors where the error occurs?
Also, no HA support in this channel
I understand i was going to take it to a pm
its just late so i figured i would see who was on and if i could bother them off of channel. No worries
(Hence why i didnt just “ask”)
I thought adt was already dead. This sounds like they want to use name brand recognition to help sell nest products.
Easier to sell to boomers
Whoever would have thought paying $30 a month for a company to call you when the alarm goes off would be a dying business
worked for along time. That guy is probably on a private island somewhere sipping mai tais
but yeah I agree avoiding bigtech when possible is the route I am taking.
the only iot thing in my network with outbound connections allowed is my netatmo system
is there somewhere a directory of addons that are not in Official or Community repo?
I still need to vlan my cameras so that they cant reach out currently on the vlan that can't talk to the lan
cloud cams? I recently got a blink xt2 in my hands but they don't work wihtout internet. it's crap for me
Anyone use GE Embrighten series outlets?
Probably or they wouldn't keep selling them.
Yeah it looks awful
I'll be honest... I thought the smoke at the beginning was the aftermath and didn't think it was that bad.
Holy crap, it's huge.
and this one where it looks like it ends under water https://streamable.com/xmmoa7
not-so-lounge
i so want to scream "run and hide dumb ass" when i see video like that ... how little value do they give to there life in order to risk everything for a good video 😡
when there is a flood, a fire, a tornado ...
always
Not sure anyone would know that it would become so big
you don't expect it to get that big
but it's realy not the first time... it's at least the 3 in a year from memory ... one in my own county, the firework factory one ... now this one.
actualy you are right, on this one they don't desrve my heat ... i guess i'm just sick of the way people react to stuff like that in general
sorry
Yeah this looked like safe distance to me. The power of the explosion is just immense
holy shit.
half the Beirut has windows smashed, power's off etc. it was a huge blast.
apparently power was mostly off before the event though
details are slowly coming out and its not looking good
they've been having a rough go lately as it is, really didn't need something like this
yeah the headlines saying "dozens injured" feel way off
technically correct
in some of the videos you can see buildings getting ripped apart like a Thanos snap
Is there any sort of command line ui that I could run on a linux machine to controll homeassistant?
something like this for homeassistant https://www.reddit.com/r/Hue/comments/frbcz1/oc_huetui_a_terminaluserinterface_for_philips_hue/
5 Rules for better support:

NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
@light trout Nice work on the job 😄 I remember when you were just playing around for fun and didnt' even have a HomeAssistant set up.
anyone heard of renwata.com? this price seems way too low for this UPS (usually around $60-65): https://www.renwata.com/products/apc-ups-600va-ups-battery-backup-surge-protector-with-usb-charging-port-uninterruptible-power-supply-back-ups-series-be600m1?variant=34139619524740
Check if renwata.com is a scam website or a legit website. Scan renwata.com for malware, phishing, fraud, scam and spam activity.
dat broken angular binding doe
pay with Amex, use a temporary card
boom, no risk
i don't have an amex but i could just use the card i hardly ever use
lmao
hahaha wtf: https://www.renwata.com/collections/home-garden
EXAMPLE PRODUCT TITLE is only $99.99?!
Lol looks like jinja in flask or django
Looks like a poorly setup dropshipping site
@scenic radish did you get hitched and honeymooned already?
Did you know Discord has a 0.1% chance of giving you a ringtone that sounds like: https://discord.com/assets/b9411af07f154a6fef543e7e442e4da9.mp3
I didn't know discord had ringtones.
oh
@forest edge heh, nope. Not until December
DEEZCEMBER
Did you know Discord has a 0.1% chance of giving you a ringtone that sounds like: https://discord.com/assets/b9411af07f154a6fef543e7e442e4da9.mp3
@midnight adder I had actually gotten that once when someone called me on it, it's not a cellphone thing just in app call thing. threes actually a few hidden things like that out there discord has.
back in my day ring tones were midi
@forest edge heh, nope. Not until December
@scenic radish so you moving to norway or is atx coming here?
@hushed basalt you around?
yes
brown cheese wedding cake
🤢 🤮
err where would i go for a dumb question on custom entities?
Design philosphy - I see a ton of people overloading their lovelaces with huge interfaces. Am I the only one that designs lovelace with the mobile layout as my primary concern?
No, a lot of folks do that (check the forums)
personally I can't remember the last time I looked at my lovelace dashboards for other than verifying bugs 😛
lol what do you use for your control center then
Yes, but just because you can doesn't mean you should.
it's designed to automate, not beeing a all controlling remote (IMO)
For instance, no automation will ever unlock my doors.
With the exception of my garage/kitchen door on my attached garage
If I have to reach for my phone/tablet then I've failed
I get that others view it differently, but I use the HA UI at upgrade time or when working on new things
Rest of the time, automations (or voice control)
Voice control isn't always an option. People sleep
My devices are my remotes 🤷
Some of them look just like light switches, so normal people can use them
And my camera monitors also function as remotes when necessary
Rule #1 - POLA
It's just an RPI connected to a monitor to stream an IP feed lmao
I live alone, so if anyone is sleeping here (would be me) and someone is executing voice commands, I really want to wake up 😂
Truueeee
Most of my automations are designed to do just that ironically enough
WAKE MY ASS UP if someone unwelcome is around
And possibly confuse any person dumb enough to break in
Imagine being a burgler and the second the door kicks open a few sirens go off and every bulb in the house is flashing red and blue 🤣 shits funny
I swear my neighbors probably think I'm nuts while I was testing them because it triggers outdoor lights too
One day free shipping on pharmacy stuff? I’ll take it.
how much do you guys earn?
oh yeah and what do you work is my next question
I don't like talking money because some people are tongue tied
I'm a software engineer
understand that, thought this would be some „free of that envyness“ space
but I've been around so long and have worked for a bunch of different companies so I can do a LOT of operational/infrastructure stuff too
do you work in a big company?
that‘s nice, so you work on your own projects or for a company?
I'm on a long term consultation agreement currently
that would be my dream, I‘m currently in a big corporation developing .net and would love to get my self employment to work but unfortunately I dont have enough clients to make a living
@dusky plank I myself too are a .NET developer 🙂
I have to wear glasses because I don't C#
I just started out, did web dev for >10 yrs,
was shocked that you compare with a single „=„ @rare cradle
i might get back to you with some weird questions 😄
nobody likes my pun?
Haha, you're welcome to @dusky plank 🙂 I've been working with web professionally since 2015, and only worked with .NET professionally.
Got some experience with PHP from 2012 -> 2015 as a hobby
I can't believe people still use PHP
php<7 is fun
php>7 is where you get serious
I‘ve never C‘een #
but I used to stay far away from any MS stuff anyway until now 😛
I have worked with .net starting pre-beta in 2001. Before that, I was doing COM/DCOM, VC++ ATLs, C++ and C.
Still do plenty of .Net - mostly .net core 3 these days.
C# has been my goto language for two decades plus.
@last plaza in 2001 I was still in elementary 😛
I’m old, but not that old 😝 @rare cradle
don‘t you have nitro @last plaza ? use them emojis! do it!
coworkers on my first day were like:
„yeah so .net almost died once“
@velvet horizon is written in .net and C# too.
I have done so much java and J2EE also, hated the IDEs. Java sucks big time compare to c# as programming language.
Kids these days with their acromyms 🙄
Visual Studio is #1 IDE hands down.
vscode?
std
fat VS is kinda obnoxious
i dont like J either but it‘s the only language I‘ve seen which is capable an should be used correctly with all paradigms
Vscode gained popularity in the last few years, if I have a choice, I’d pick Visual Studio.
@last plaza VS17 had it's problems, VS19 is getting better and better.
I'm beginning to like VS Code more and more
i use PyCharm Pro for work but VS Code at home because i'm a cheap bastard
vsc is opensource isn‘t it? never imagined ms to release such a cool project for free
Yup. It is open source. The whole .net core is open source.
@dusky plank much has changed the past couple of years. It's awesome! 🙂
MS aren't as evil as most people make out. They could've billed people a ton for GitHub and NPM when they acquired those. Instead, they've embraced open source.
I think they actually made GH less expensive for hobbyists / small teams. Unlimited private repos now.
Yup!
i never thought of ms to be evil, more google
but i don‘t trust them with my data either so I prefer gitlab which already got unlimited free repos from the start
i run gogs
You think MS don't have data too? 😄 Windows collects way too much. But at least MS promote development instead of just take take take.
I thought they would turn GitHub into ShitHub when they bought it. They did well so far.
and a docker registry too, so you can upload your containers along your project
everything that needs source control for my internal stuff stays internal
Fun thing about that registry...
You can not use images hosted there in GithubActions 😂
heh oops
@deft pewter I've got a buddy working for github (he's in the office next to mine). They are working on a lot of nice stuff for the free platform.
I set up gitblit at this joint
@light trout what are github actions? CD?
seems to work okay
@last plaza did you ever use spring data with JPA?
it made a LOT of stuff dead simple
I love spring framework. Can’t live without it. The IOC is built into the .net core now, and in fact .net core uses IOC a lot internally.
At work, we have been using Springboot a lot lately.
spring boot + data/JPA is fantastic

if you haven't seen spring data with JPA you're missin out
one thing I added to the project I mostly work on recently is a JPA metadata generator
so when you use the Criteria API you'll break code if something gets changed accidentally in the entities
Awesome. That’s the best combination in Java world for sure!
mainly because the other people on the team don't know how to write tests that are actually tests
Yup.
We take everything to the extremes - our TDD and ATDD practices are one of the best.
Took years for the org to adopt the practices, but it is worth it.
I've been trying to push testing thresholds for new code but nobody else is being held accountable
they gave the most junior guy a new project and he's screwed it up
so now I'll be forced to mop that up
... I currently work at a place that has no tests what so ever.
Everything is tested manually,
in production...
Hard being an independent consultant to push those changes. Some require time and money.
I remember having to test on production. And I remember my boss asking why so many things break 😐
Why not develop in production environment? @rare cradle
As much as I hate writing tests, tests are better than no tests.
@last plaza haha, I kinda have the feeling that the only reason is that C# has to be compiled first 😛
At least we are using bitbucket.
But maaan we have a long way. I see it as a way to grow and have some influence, hopefully 😛
You have to have the csc.exe in production- because of just in time compiler. Technically you can code there.
But maaan we have a long way. I see it as a way to grow and have some influence, hopefully 😛
@rare cradle there is your golden opportunity- make sure you surround yourself with those who actually listen to@you and implement. Otherwise you’ll get frustrated and leave.
@last plaza I'm doing my best to play the game in the right way. Been working there fore 3 months now. Staring in the midst of a lockdown.
Beginning to figure out who has power over what, and who I can influence. It's gonna be some 4D chess I guess, but I'm sure it's worth it (for the CV 😉 )

my place also apparently never heard of this sorcery of TDD
I’m not surprised.
You TDD guys... are you saying you actually get well-specced stories that you can actually work with immediately? What madness is this?
Feels like I'm doing half the work of our architects/BA's for most stories.
I finally picked up a piece of work today where I know exactly what's needed and am actually writing the tests first. It's the second time it's happened in this team in the last 2 years 😐
Gherkin and Cucumber FWIW
That's like gin & tonic? 🤔
I've heard of those. I've never had the pleasure of using them.
@deft pewter specced stories? Nah man, I just get "we need to create xyz for customer abc" and then I guess at what the customer needs :)
But hat doesn't mean that I can't create my own stories and then do TDD from there 🙂
i did an internship in berlin where they had like 300 controllers, everything tested 100% coverage, and yes they actually had stories which were complete and detailed to the point where you don‘t have any questions anymore. german beasts
@dusky plank my last job (here in Denmark) was kinda like that :)
That part of the job was nice! 🙂
The fact that I didn't agree with the stories and the direction of the product is an entirely different thing 😛
plus: they had a traffic sign which light up in red when the tests failed (and did not deploy) so when one guy fucked up the whole office knew whom to blame
*traffic light
i‘ve also seen one office where they shoot nerf darts at the guy who fucks up. automated
Traffic lights above each desk? That would be awesome until it was your own light that went red 😄
@dusky plank that part with "who to blame" sounds terrifying
I had a boss that had a Wall of Shame
That was a terribly place to work...
I'm more in the positive reinforcement camp 🙂
employee of the month ftw
we had a traffic light at one job
I think it was an ESP with API access to the CI environment
a general traffic light for tests status on :dev would be kinda cool
it'd turn red and several little red bubblegum lights on the floor would go off
it checked against :staging
then someone would run svn blame
also fine but we use standard gitflow here
and there was a stuffed donkey that you got on your desk until the next person screwed up
I'm using modified gitflow right now
so standard gitflow doesn‘t count in staging? must be non-webdev work then 😄
it felt dirty having to resolve the conflicts in a release branch and commit 🙂
gitflow just makes branches
branches get deployed wherever
there's no rigid workflow
release branches and master matches the latest release
mhmmm never seen that in practice
dev is newer than release
all of our "deployment" CI builds are parameterized so you pick whatever branch you want to deploy
the job that actually deploys stuff to production auto-tags the branch with a timestamp
so if we need to roll back or make a branch from that, it's dead simple
@dusky plank if you can get in the habit of making a separate branch for each feature or set of functions, you'll be in a good spot
it's way easier to merge in X branches to a release branch to include features then adding commits to roll back changes you don't want
and if needed, you can completely trash the release branch and re-merge
Just hit any PM who dares utter the word "agile" and show them the waterfall way
all of our "deployment" CI builds are parameterized so you pick whatever branch you want to deploy
@last dirge if it isn’t parameterized, it not a CI. It would be Continuous Manual Integration 😝
As long as you don't work in teams and the project managers have a shelf life of roughly two to three years it doesn't
Oh, sorry. I mean "work in multidisciplinary teams", which means one techie and some functional consultants.
@turbid stirrup isn't that the core of DevOps teams?
LOL, just saw a recent picture of Adele after weight loss
she looks like Weird Al in a blond wig
is it wrong to think she looked better chubbier?
very similar lolz
is it wrong to think she looked better chubbier?
@bitter pawn Not at all 🙂
Stone are such a weird measurement. I love them.
If I had to give my weight in pounds all the time, I'd cry.
Divides by 14. Yup, not so bad.
Stones are universal - let’s not get into metric wars now 😝
idk its weird. while i understand wanting to get thinner for health reasons
<picks up stone from backyard> "and yet this stone is not 14lbs"
American stones vary in weight
It's one of those Freedom Stones.
Alright everyone, let’s mosey!
Anyone got some great tutorials (videos or websites) for a noob looking to setup home assistant? I have a mix of HomeKit/ amazon/ google devices if that makes a difference.
Sure, check the topic
I'm sorry, I don't understand?
start here: https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/
hey crew, I have a dns resolution issue inside the esphome dashboard docker container, in which room should I post a question?
probably their discord, not sure
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32. You can find their documentation here, and get help here in the #diy-archived channel. They have their own Discord server too.
What the heck is "lighttpd" and why is it always using port 80!?
lighttp is the server
d means daemon
so lighttpd is the daemon for lighttp
d is also for DEEZ NUTS

I've disabled the service and restarted and it's still riding port 80
Can finally turn my solar on today. It's been sitting unused on my roof for over a month now. Bloody slack energy providers.
Mine waited for longer than that for electrical inspection. Both the inspector and the electrician had to be there at the same time to open boxes and such and the first time the electrician was late and the inspector left
maddening, because it was the beginning of summer and I missed 6-8 weeks of prime sunshine
What's the worst that could happen?
That I can finaly edit my ssh config without ocwardly walking the text editor to the right place
Windows 10 has made shit fun to screw around
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search]
"ImmersiveSearch"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\Flighting\Override]
"CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius"=dword:00000009
"ImmersiveSearchFull"=dword:00000001
This is one of the more interesting toys
PowerToys includes a fake Spotlight too.
I installed it for FancyZones, not sure I like the rest.
So it doesnt function
I use Keypirinha instead
Which imho works better
I also found out the themes are more powerful than I first assumed
Eww, that white background on the right 😄
KeyPirinha looks okay. I use Alfred on the Mac and love the customisation options, especially when you add custom scripts/flows to it.
KP looks slightly less advanced but still decent.
You have KP and you have Wox
And yeah I havent adjusted all the Windows elements yet
But fuck me if you cant. Its insane
Just checked out Wox, seems closer to Alfred. I'll give it a proper go after work
Thanks for the recommendations
Also if you are running Win 10, check out its new compact.exe feature
Its insane
Its like the Right click > compress but... they have totally revamped it
(Not my pic)
There is basically 0 loss in performance too. Especially if you have an SSD
I've been in a meeting today with a guy who speaks English with a Norwegian accent with a French accent. Very odd...
@mild tapir Hooli would like a word
Compression
Such a shit ending
Mike Judge can't finish
Office Space, Idiocracy, Silicon Valley all shit endings
So true 😦
So... I managed to get Windows Fax and Scan + Windows dailer.exe to use a SIP Trunk
Fuck if I know
But its funny as hell to just yoink peoples numbers in
and they get the fax noise
Hey, the -90s called and complained about your etiquette.
Tell it to fax me a complaint
So apparently my power supply for my laptop has failed.. its a Asus G74. And I just the power supply back and in March and a new battery in June.
@hushed basalt whats a shit ending?
Which one
The final part of office space was funny with the stapler and the fire
But I feel like his final actd are just weak compared to the first ones
Just a great movie. Could have only been made better by getting Anniston nekkid 🙂
windows fax and scan using a SIP trunk? Do share
I can send them all over to my asterisk box
😄
awesome new DC animated movie...didnt know they were working on a Deathstroke one
if you haven't seen the DC animated movies i highly recommend if you like comic book stuff...they are so amazingly awesome lol
Das ist nur ein kurzer Test von meinem brandneuem Bockwurstklavier.

that's the wurst piano I've ever seen
I guess it'd be too dependent on the individual sausages to turn it into a chained resistive setup
especially with polyphony
I never sausage a waste of food
Which chat should i use for question relating to improving the speed of energy monitoring reporting of the tp link plug in HA
@steel crag You want it?
This took me forever
Finding Working modems and Drivers was a stupid PITA
Go into device manager and right click the com0com ports and "Update Driver" else the Cert Validation fails
Other than that, it works beautifully
If you have HylaFAX on a server, that works with this too
@unkempt night If you're looking at developing there's various dev channels 😉
"hey this sucks" followed by "and this is how you'd fix it" is always welcome
Unless the fix it involves the application of high energy physics... actually, specifically if...
Ugh well this has highlighted a flaw in my setup. Everything is local controlled but because of how I have HA set up for external access with an SSL cert, my internet is down and now I can't access it lol
Use https:// with the LAN IP @lethal ice

Errr whoops
#frontend-archived would be a good place to ask
Sorry
All good
who happens to be using pi hole?
👋
it's just DNS level blocking right? couldnt i do that within most routers?
yea you can always just find the list and add the domains that way if you want
pihole just gives you a nice interface and easy way to detect what to unblock/block etc...
and easy to turn it off
so block youtube.com? 😛
i think they added per device recently
ah yea
there are some guides on that
but you have to keep up with it since google is always changing things
check out reddit lots of examples on how they do it there
hmm
any idea if the pi hole add on is good?
or does it need the whole power of the PI to be able to do pi hole well?
PiHole doesn’t do a good job of blocking YT ads.
word
not a huge deal, but i was watching the app in bed and i never do, and an ad poped up and i stoped watching
lol
on my main pc i have enough adblocking and scrip blocking that nothing gets through
@mild tapir I'd love to play with it, thank you!
youtube is actively changing how they implement those ads. ublock even takes a few days to adjust
@scenic radish that worked in a browser. Apparently doesn't in the app. Thanks
The future is very crippling. Service outage and you're like "ARGH the internet is out, I can't work! I guess I better go do something fun while I wait. ARGH! The internet is out!"
hmmm... Deciding between 250/25 or 100/40 internet speed.
I feel 40 up is more important atm.
This video shows the cooking of food by passing electrical current through it, and involves exposed electrical connections that pose a shock risk. I would advise against trying this yourself. Let me do it for you instead.
There was no obvious metal taste, but you could tast...

I feel 40 up is more important atm.
@rare condor only if your hosting a webserver or something lol
@forest edge GDrive server backups
@forest edge || 🐡 ||
good afternoon, just started on the journey yesterday with a raspberry pi4, got it up and running just tinkering with it all
welcome to the rabbit hole
I think Money Pit is more fitting 😛
I'm still running on a Pi 1B+ I think it is
but I have 19 sonoffs
4 harmony hubs
and way too many ideas
i was just previously using google home for everything, i am still yet to decide how to make Google Home / HA play best together
The easiest is #cloud-archived ($5/month) but there's a free #integrations-archived option
well if you've added the devices to HA, Google home works easy with Nabu Casa
well you don't ask in here

Always read the topic 😉
apologies
the documentation seems abundant...
it is, and it can be very version specific if you're just following a random guide
so be sure to check CURRENT docs 😄
Videos particularly can become outdated almost as quickly as they're released
this.
right.
here.
fallen for that already
damn, then you're really in the club now
welcome, pull up a chair and mix a drink you'll need one
I've upgraded my HA and lost everything because I didn't read the release notes to find out things got broken and the update didn't go thru
used a guide and lost the whole thing
because it was for another version/way to install HA
your whole config is in /homeassistant - just do backups?
most of my pain was because I thought I knew how it worked, and then things changed
ouch
mstone: thanks, but I'm already rebuilt now.... for a long time that was quite a few releases ago
I've been running on my Pi 1B+ since it was almost "recommended" hardware
Anyone with experience in flashing Sonoff RF Bridge with Tasmota and Portisch?
I've done with tas but not with portisch. saw a video on how to do it tho
#diy-archived or the Tasmota Discord
Ready to use custom firmware for ESP8266 devices (including Sonoff)
Docs:
https://tasmota.github.io/docs/
Discord:
https://discord.gg/Ks2Kzd4
@forest edge I managed to get Portisch firmware onto the bridge, so all good there. I just have a question regarding capturing a doorbell button. You might not have used RfRaw capturing if you haven't tried Portisch?

See #diy-archived or the Tasmota Discord 😉
Then... go to the Tasmota Discord 😉
be like telling Brian to go to Home & Gardens Discord when he brings up his rain barrel stuff etc
He's asking about Tasmota
So, getting help with Tasmota would seem to be a good topic for the Tasmota Discord?
more to do with Portish and the RF Bridge than Tasmota, i just PM'd him. I can't help with that particular situation anways cause I never went that route
Sorry guys, I asked in the Tasmota discord.
Although we are in the lounge so I foolishly thought it would be headrom for these type of questions 😛
#diy-archived would be more appropriate then
when there's so much support questions landing in the lounge which is not supposed to be there - why not move the lobby down a few entries? just a suggestion
yes I know its madness
My mind was blown by your simple suggestion that would actually be quite effective.
I suspect it'll just move the "default channel" problem elsewhere 😂 Who knows though... 🤔
The next one on the list is home assistant os. Could be a good fit.
zero
or do most of you use wg and ovpn
Most likely both, #general-archived is a good place to ask
already asked here
either wway good to know
I might cook something up
@light trout @clever mortar Thank you and all the people who have helped. I have aced my grad project, and graduated!
For those of you who are developers in companies
How often are you surprised by skill gaps in other developers
Even seniors
I showed a docker-compose file to a group of developers the other day and I got the impression it looked like hieroglyphics to them
Not juniors either
anyone here running nextcloud?
@hushed basalt almost daily
a lot of "it depends" there
been running some interviews recently and have been noticing some trends with techs that a developer has worked with and techs they're not likely to have touched
in my limited dataset, python devs who use Django didn't have exp with building python wheels from scratch or docker but did have a strong understanding of python itself and unit testing
if i was a different type of person in a different industry, that would be an interesting study
What are ya'll using for whole-house-audio? I was thinking each endpoint could be dumb speakers + a rpi, but what software to hook it all together? Ideally I'd have zones that play different things, or at least have toggle on/off (play downstairs, quiet upstairs). Source is spotify for the most part.
Sonos for me
Is sonos only speakers, or do they make wireless dac components that I can plug into my existing speakers?
I believe so too. There are a few wireless DAC options that people use, most notably Google Chromecast Audio
I believe most of the major amplifier manufacturers such as Yamaha or Denon offer their own solutions
Two Yamaha Rx-v685 amps. 5.1 in two rooms, stereo in two others.
@young sigil is their multiroom setup controllable via HA?
Yes it is.
Ideally what I want is just some boxes that can be streamed to from a central location. Ideally physically small, then they plug into whatever happens to be in that room.
used 'ideally' twice there...
they discontinued those?
Yeah :(
