from the rona

after he got it attending a Trump Rally

wet pilot
#

20 -> 29 is a bit too fast though isn't it?

#

or can the tests pick it up faster than 14 days?

forest edge
#

@last dirge oh heh, i just flipped back to this channel and saw and went on ahead and asked

last dirge
#

@wet pilot or he had it and went to the rally

#

Herman Cain, superspreader

trail crag
#

no covid for me or anyone in the house, yet

wet pilot
#

genuine question though. I don't know when it starts showing up on tests

last dirge
#

I don't know either

forest edge
#

no covid for me or anyone in the house, yet
@trail crag that is good

last dirge
#

I'm no scientician

forest edge
#

@wet pilot depends on how big of a "dose" you get as they put it

#

why symptoms vary so much around the 2 week mark

wet pilot
#

makes sense

trail crag
#

A friend of mine here locally had suspicions and got them confirmed in what seemed to be a week

forest edge
#

I thought back in march they were saying some started have fevers as early as a few days

wet pilot
#

probably all depends on the "dose" like you said

forest edge
#

yea, big diff between someone sneezing in your mouth and you rubbing your nose lol

granite hare
#

if someone sneezed in my mouth, I would probably take the awful advice of drinking bleach...

last dirge
#

no no, not drinking, injecting

#

also open it all up to sunlight

wet pilot
#

iantrich is not a doctor. iantrichdoes not endorse the practice of drinking bleach. Doing so is dangerous and will kill you. DO NOT drink bleach.

last dirge

pretty basic

static schooner

it makes your insides white

last dirge

is it caustic or corrosive?

forest edge
#

corrosive

#

can't imagine living the rest of your life with no stomach because you drank bleach lol

#

assuming you made it to a hospital in time that is

last dirge
#

I read something on reddit a while from a doctor responding to a post about someone committing suicide by drinking something horrible

#

I think it was acid

#

they said essentially there's no way to "undo" that

#

I don't think bleach would be as quick unless you did something to concentrate it

#

but the whole stripping of lipid layer can't be too great for the ol' esophagus

forest edge
#

no idea what the time frame would be, guess would also depend on how much you drank but I know stomach pumping dosen't solve the issue

granite hare

you guys take all the fun out of everything...

#

Hey :D
Let's say i'm wanna go all (or almost all) hard-wired for my house AND i don't live in Europe (important because that exclude KNX), do you guys know some good options ?

forest edge
#

I don't follow

#

you want to ethernet whole house? looking just to run random wires whole house for various connections?

night zodiac
#

Sonoma, are you a car?

#

When you talk, I feel like I am listening to something with 4 wheels.

hushed basalt
#

@crimson coral not many options I'm afraid

#

Without going to industrial gear

#

Raspberry Pis with poe and using their gpios would be a viable option

#

But you'll be designing/programming all of your own sensors

thick dragon
#

Isn't paracetomol the actual medical term for the drug? Tylenol is just a brand.

last dirge
#

ACKCHUALLY

forest edge
#

because it's converting aka splitting the audio out

last dirge
#

it's not though

#

I figured it out, it's gotta do some song and dance routine to do a "handshake" that the displayport spec needs

#

the KVM switch I got makes no mention of this "feature" it has

#

it's got a SUPER LOUD piezo speaker that beeps when it detects video input

#

so that's gettin returned

thick dragon
#

Few things that would attribute to the cost on that. Both HDMI and DP have separate handshakes. That cable is also an active cable (requiring dedicated power from a separate USB port). And I don't know of a lot of MALE DP ports that can be used as OUTPUT rather than INPUT when converting from another standard.

last dirge
#

that's not what that cable does though

#

it converts HDMI output to Displayport Input

#

so plug it into a HDMI port on a video card, plug the Displayport end into a monitor

#

the Displayport to HDMI adapter is $12

#

other way around, twice as much

#

and apparently the dual-monitor KVM with Displayport isn't a common need

thick dragon
#

Likely the active portion of it which is making it that expensive then. Surprised it needs an active line though, with such a relatively short distance.

last dirge
#

description says it "may need it"

thick dragon
#

Usually you only need active power if it's 20ft+

#

Why don't you just use a DP -> HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable then?

#

(provided HDMI is enough to actually drive whatever monitor you want to KVM)

last dirge
#

because that's not the way it needs to be converted

#

video card has 3 outputs, Dual link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort

#

I found this better KVM though

#

takes advantage of the DisplayPort tech and adds a secondary HDMI output off of the single link from the computers

#

plus it's USB 3 vs the other noisy beep one that's only USB 2

thick dragon
#

How often are you gonna need to switch? When I was working from home I found it easy enough to just use two separate inputs on my monitor and a USB hub.

#

But I was only switching 1-2 times a day.

last dirge
#

not often, but it's a lot less work to use a KVM

#

and it's a writeoff anyhow

thick dragon
#

It's just that every step you introduce, can change the signal. My monitor is a gaming monitor, so I specifically didn't want any sort of KVM or DP hub because it would lose features/refresh.

wet pilot
#

I used a USB kvm and multiple inputs on my displays

#

Only needed usb2 for keyboard, mouse, and wireless headset

thick dragon
#

My monitor has a USB3 hub built into it, so all I did was switch USB ports when switching computers, and switched display inputs. Super simple, everything worked.

last dirge
#

yeah, it's not that big of a deal

#

one monitor's an older 21" acer, the other one's a newer 24" ASUS

#

I'm not a serious gamer, just like the real estate

#

I play Rust occasionally

wet pilot
#

Both mine are trash tier acers ๐Ÿ˜€

last dirge
#

the ASUS is nice

#

better since I got my Huey

thick dragon
#

Duals is a bit more annoying. I sprung for a single ultrawide during lockdown for simplicity's sake - plus I get frequent neck issues from looking across multiple monitors.

wet pilot
#

I'm in desperate need of an upgrade but it needs to be mac compatible

last dirge
#

LOL

wet pilot
#

Stupid work laptop

last dirge
#

doesn't it have thunderbolt compatible ports?

thick dragon
#

Mac have always used pretty uniform standards for monitors at least.

wet pilot
#

Yeah, it has the stupid 4 usb c ports only

thick dragon
#

And most of the top-end monitors have USB-C ports that are TB capable.

last dirge
#

guaranteed there's a thunderbolt to whatever adapter

wet pilot
#

Also, I built out a sim racing rig so I gotta figure out some stuff to run cables to both the rig and the desk

last dirge
#

B&H sent me an email with "new special price on this monitor

#

it's a 49" ultrawide curved screen

#

it's 8K across ๐Ÿ™‚

wet pilot
#

Wow

#

By what?

last dirge
#

whatever regular 4K is high

wet pilot
#

I'm prolly going to do a 1440 ultrawide

last dirge
#

lemme see if I can find it

thick dragon
#

You really don't want that high a resolution on an Ultrawide (or any workstation monitor really). You sit too close for that level of pixel density.

#

1440 UW is the tits.

wet pilot
#

And maybe a 1080 oriented virtually

last dirge
thick dragon
#

That's not 8k across, that's standard 1440 superUW ๐Ÿ˜›

#

You honestly won't likely need it @wet pilot. I thought I would, but I don't miss it. Sometimes I set up my iPad underneath my monitor using Duet though. That works pretty well.

wet pilot
#

Eh, just somewhere to sling some coding research or outlook/slack

#

I'd still have the laptop display though

thick dragon
wet pilot
#

Yeah that's pretty nuts. Linus liked it

last dirge
#

I just need to see lots of code

thick dragon
#

The way I have mine set up is a standard 16:9 window in the middle, with two gutters either side used either for research or chat.

wet pilot
#

Is that manual or are there software tricks to make that work?

thick dragon
#

MS released a cool tool within PowerToys called FancyZones that allows you to customise all that.

last dirge
#

I used to have just two laptops and everything ran through DisplayLink adapters

#

so I'd switch everything with a single cable

wet pilot
#

I got macOS though

thick dragon
#

Probably something similar for OSX too.

#

There ya go ๐Ÿ™‚

wet pilot

#

We'll see if black friday actually happens this year

#

Also about to have a need for a 2nd car after almost 2 years with only 1 so I gotta save some

thick dragon
#

I just bought an electric bicycle, so hopefully need the car significantly less!

wet pilot
#

We need a 2nd baby seat capable vehicle unfortunately

#

Also kinda need a pickup for a lot of house projects

#

Well, "need"

#

For the truck at least

thick dragon
#

Yeah, I don't have that problem. No kids, and considering going to get the โœ‚๏ธ

wet pilot
#

That's on my list

#

We're not doing 2

thick dragon

I figure that if I end up wanting a kid, there's thousands that need a good home.

#

yay, now to sort out a config for it

hushed basalt
#

@rare condor I finished the proof of concept on my solar diverter simulation

#

It's really lets me demonstrate how important reducing heat loss and strategic thermal mass can make a solar diverter way more useful

rare condor
#

Yeah it only makes sense if you have reasonable thermal insulation

night zodiac
#

adapters

hushed basalt
#

Air tightness is a big factor as well. @rare condor

rare condor
#

Yeah which means it's not relevant in Aus :P

hushed basalt
#

:'(

#

Especially your wood stud houses

#

Brick veneer is terrible but the internal mass can be taken advantage of

#

It really does lag a heatwave here

thick dragon
#

I was very disappointed with "winter" this year. Didn't even drop below 10 degrees at any point in my suburb ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

#

Bloody climate change.

rare condor
#

I have done real world testing in my house and it poses no benefit unless I heat up to 30c + for the temp to reach 20c when back home

#

Cheaper to get 10c feeding payback for me and heat on demand

thick dragon
#

I can finally turn my solar on next week after having it installed for a full month. Bloody energy providers are so slow to action anything.

hushed basalt
#

@rare condor

#

3 Day period with the identical PV generation

thick dragon
#

Is that for controlled load hot water redirector @hushed basalt?

#

I considered it for my place, but controlled load cost is only 2c more than my FIT, so don't think it'd be worth it.

hushed basalt
#

Sort of

#

Basically for the demo, you put in a list of entities to monitor as well as their estimated load, a turn_on_action and a turn_off_action

#

So I have thermostats, where the turn_on_action is set the temp to 25, and turn off action is set the temp to 20 etc

#

And it looks at how much surplus power you have available, sorts the loads that can be 'turned on' by the priority that you set, sees if there's enough surplus power to turn that one on, and then turns it on

#

And the same in reverse when there's power being imported from the grid

rare condor
#

But the big thing with diverters is the ability to use 'excess power'. I.e. rather than turn on 2400w heating load you control the output based off available extra i.e. 1823w or something. This is pretty expensive but required as solar fluctuates massively throughout the day

thick dragon
#

Ohh right, so kinda like a solar usage optimiser.

#

I have kinda written a simplistic one of those myself. Looks at cloudiness forecast, and lets me know if I should schedule high power usage tasks for that day (dishwasher/washing machine/etc).

hushed basalt
#

Yeah so this is designed to work with anything

#

So real world heat pumps, heaters,

thick dragon
#

Would definitely be helpful for places that need constant heating/have pools.

hushed basalt
#

Same with cooling as well

#

But yeah when I get the chance I'll get my mum set up with power monitoring

#

And set it to work on her house

#

As she has 3 aircons, a pool pump, a pool heater and solar panels

thick dragon
#

Yeah, I guess using an optimiser to cool a house down while there's still daylight would be better than trying to cool it down when you get home. I have all my ACs hooked up to Broadlink IR blasters, so I might have to modify my solar controller to do that ๐Ÿ™‚

hushed basalt
#

I'll give you the source when I'm finished

#

It's an appdaemon app

thick dragon
#

Heh, funnily enough - so is mine ๐Ÿ™‚

hushed basalt
#

Do you have solar panels and monitoring

thick dragon
#

Yes. Not turned on yet though, because Energy Australia have been fucking slack at getting the meter upgraded to support feed in.

amber bramble

@last dirge I've got an Aeotec z-wave sensor and a samsung zigbee sensor

#

I like the form factor of the samsung sensor the best

last dirge

form factor doesn't really matter

#

they'll all be hidden

#

I guess the main thing is going to be what battery it uses and how often it needs new ones

amber bramble
#

one sec ill check the battery

tidal bronze
#

@last dirge more than a year

amber bramble

samsung sensor uses a CR2 battery and mine is reporting 93% after 3 months

last dirge

I don't have a zigbee radio

amber bramble
#

you should get one ๐Ÿ˜›

tidal bronze

You should run both

last dirge

I don't wanna have to re-pair everything

is there a zigbee only stick that doesn't suck?

#

or is the Nortek stick still the go-to?

tidal bronze
#

Run zigbee and zw both.

last dirge
#

@amber bramble I don't like the fact that one's gotta either have the water drip on the top of the thing or it's gotta sit in the water

#

it looks good though

#

the one I linked can work like that or it's got a little sensor dongle you can put wherever you want it to detect

#

I think I like that

#

Zigbee stuff is sooo much cheaper

tidal bronze
#

Yes they are.

amber bramble
#

yeah i wish z-wave gear was less expensive

tidal bronze
#

Best is to mix and match

#

Been very happy with GE in wall sensors. No more battery issues.

amber bramble
#

ge in-wall sensors whaaaat

last dirge
#

it's part of a light switch

#

I bought one to replace a failed switch but haven't done the switcheroo yet

amber bramble
#

ah those

tidal bronze
last dirge
#

the switch that died is for a fart fan, doesn't make much sense to have a motion sensor there

amber bramble
#

i replaced all my z-wave switches with inovellis

#

granted i only had 3 of them at the time

tidal bronze
#

They are good too. I have few modules from them too.

#

I think the mini relay switch.

amber bramble
#

my next purchase when i have money again is going to be inovelli's combo ceiling fan/light switches with the canopy modules

tidal bronze
#

I changed from GE zwave fan modules to ifan03

#

Only if they had a module that supports reverse feature

steel crag
#

@last dirge my water heater is only 2 years old but the $100 timer I bought crapped out and now I have to manually turn it on and off

amber bramble
#

i just replaced my water heater last month

last dirge
#

why are you turning it on and off?

steel crag
#

fart fan @last dirge ?

last dirge
#

yes, fart fan

tidal bronze
#

I was about to ask ๐Ÿ˜†

amber bramble
#

it sprung a leak like 2 weeks after i put a water sensor under it and installed a dome z-wave shutoff valve on the main water line ๐Ÿ˜†

steel crag
#

I turn it on and off because electricity is very expensive in The Bahamas, and I truthfully only need it on 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night at best

tidal bronze
#

Electric then. Haven't seen one of those in ages.

steel crag
#

our power company charges fuel surchage on top of per kilowatt

#

and the fuel charge is often more than the price of electricity

#

my usage is around $100 but my fuel charge can be $160-$190 depending on the price of fuel

#

so $290 for a single guy is a bit much

#

so I've been searching for a way to connect it reliably to HA

#

I also don't arrive/leave home at the same time so the ability for me to have an automation turn it on when I'm on the way home would be clutch

#

and also off when I leave

last dirge
#

why that instead of a solar unit?

steel crag
#

because I don't have $1000+ for a solar unit

#

importing anything into the country has shipping costs, and import duty associated with it

#

my heater was about $300 and I installed it myself

last dirge
#

what's the break even on electricity though?

steel crag
#

well when I priced it out

#

my solar wouldn't pay for itself in 10 years

wet pilot
#

10y isn't bad. i thought it was typically considered that if you beat 20 you're in the black

tidal bronze
#

7 years now

wet pilot

oh ๐Ÿ˜„

last dirge

my roof is too small and my power too cheap for it to make sense

tidal bronze

Tesla pricing brings is closer to 5

wet pilot

last dirge

#

yeah, it's built into my phone

#

๐Ÿ˜‰

tidal bronze

@wet pilot what kind of calculator?

last dirge
#

the one on google's project sunroof is pretty good

steel crag
#

@wet pilot when I say wouldn't I mean 10 years was a joke

wet pilot
#

oh ๐Ÿ˜›

steel crag
#

I was quoted $15,000 to solar my home

tidal bronze
#

@wet pilot you will have to run your own numbers if you want to be super accurate

steel crag
#

and that's with a genset

#

but not with batteries I like

tidal bronze
#

Most system sizing based on billing is way off

last dirge
#

15k isn't bad at all

#

how big of an array?

tidal bronze
#

Actually what was $ per watt?

steel crag
#

I don't have access to the quote anymore but I believe it was for 5Kw panels and 5Kw genset

wet pilot
#

apparently i'm looking at a 18.6k USD system (after incentives) and my break even is just under 9 years

steel crag
#

what would it be before incentives?

#

cuz we don't get those LOL

wet pilot
#

25,2

steel crag

we only just able to sell excess power to power company

#

but only up to 5Kw

tidal bronze
#

@wet pilot system size kDC?

wet pilot

10.5

tidal bronze

wet pilot

wet pilot

i'm not sure if they do

last dirge

you can use my link and I think get some kind of bonus

wet pilot

i'm not really in a rush right now, there are a bunch of other things on my list

steel crag

we only have 5 tesla cars here

last dirge

@steel crag that seems way cheap

tidal bronze

@last dirge why didn't you tell me about the link. ? lol

steel crag

maybe 10 hours on a slow boat

rare condor

"short"

last dirge

@tidal bronze because you were shit talking Tesla so I figured you wouldn't use them

#

did they install yet?

steel crag

@rare condor it takes 23 hours to get to one of our southern islands from here

and that's domestic travel

sooooo 10 to another country is short

tidal bronze

@last dirge what's the photo question

last dirge
#

got any recs on a bag for a body and two lenses?

hushed basalt
#

Depends on your style

#

Shoulder bag?

last dirge
#

I don't understand the differences in style between the adjectives they use

#

a messenger style bag would be what?

#

sling?

hushed basalt
#

I just ignore the names and look at them,

last dirge
#

or would that still be considered shoulder?

#

and HOLY SHIT are lenses expensive as hell

hushed basalt
#

You'll probably have a lens attached to a body and one loose

#

Lol everything is relative

last dirge
#

I got a used Fujifilm X-T2

hushed basalt
#

I worked for a company that had $60k lenses or sets of primes worth north of $100k

last dirge
#

and a 35mm f1.4 prime lens

hushed basalt
#

When a 120mm pola filter was $1200 it puts everything in a twisted perspective

last dirge
#

okay how about recommendations on what features I should look for in a bag; what's a gimmick and what's useful?

hushed basalt
#

Bags are really subjective so you may just be better off going to a store and trying

#

Umm

#

Simple is best

#

One flap to open to get everything is better than six compartments

#

Also think about how they look in terms of attractiveness to thieves

#

Lowepro semi rigid bags will protect your gear from damage but screams steal me

#

A generic soft messsnger bag will be less attractive

last dirge
#

so this bright yellow Nanuk case I carry my drone in is a target?

#

๐Ÿค”

hushed basalt
#

If you want you can get a small lowepro side load backpack

#

And carry a mavic, camera, lenses and a small lunch all in one

#

A bag with an integrated weather protector is nice

last dirge
#

like a rain fly?

hushed basalt
#

Yeah

#

But i wouldn't worry about one for a messenger bag you'd want that to have some light rain protection inbuilt

#

It just depends do you want an everyday carry normal bag that can take your camera

#

Or a dedicated bag just for the camera, batteries, lenses, charger etc

last dirge
#

doesn't have to be a single bag

hushed basalt
#

Lowepro is pretty good value in certain ranges

last dirge
#

I'd like one I could toss my laptop and the camera stuff in for going on vacation probably

hushed basalt
#

I'd get a backpack if you want something you can put in an overhead locker

#

Ones that open from the side

#

So you can swing the backpack around your body and get the camera without putting it down/taking it off

last dirge
#

it's a mirrorless camera so I guess the bags can be smaller

hushed basalt
#

Yeah something like that is worth looking at in a store

#

150 size

#

Only small laptop though

orchid rose
#

I wasn't expecting bags to be the first thing in town your mind. Telco has good advice though

hushed basalt
#

You'd need to go up to a 200 if you want to carry a 13" probably

last dirge
#

laptop size, you mean?

hushed basalt
#

Yeah

last dirge
#

I'm probably going to end up getting a new laptop sooner rather than later

#

my current laptop is a ThinkPad and it's a beast

hushed basalt
#

You're not going to be doing much flying soon anyways

last dirge
#

right

#

which is why I said it doesn't have to be a single bag

hushed basalt
#

If you want a dedicated bag

#

Messenger bags I don't have much experience with

#

But I'd go for something that doesn't look "photo"

last dirge
#

if this didn't have the logo on the front, it'd be perfect

hushed basalt
#

Yeah there's a trillion shoulder bag designs

#

I'd just look in your local store for something you like

#

Then buy it on amazon =3

#

Look at how much padding is in the floor of the bag

#

How rigid it holds it's structure

last dirge
#

this takes really damn good photos

hushed basalt
#

Good strap, a big wide foamy shoulder strap is nice

last dirge
#

oh, that's another thing

#

I assume the strap that came with the camera is the minimum viable thing

#

did someone kill image sharing in here again?

deft pewter
#

Easy to leave it over one shoulder all the time but still be able to pull your camera up in front without resistance.

#

I can't stand having a camera hanging off the back of my neck. Side carry all the way.

last dirge
#

that clamp is kinda scary

deft pewter
#

Yeah, mine's a little 'safer' than that. I've never worried that it might come undone.

#

Gotta use a decent amount of force to depress the gate and still have to turn it 90ยบ to the camera to slide it through.

#

There are other brands with various different attachment systems, it's just the side carry that I find works well for both comfort and convenience.

last dirge
#

got any recommendations for a small flash?

hushed basalt
#

I'd recommend something like that also

#

If you don't need to put it on a tripod the strap mounts on the bottom are best

#

I'm not sure what the interfaces for fuji are like in terms of flash

night zodiac

@hushed mist ask the question, if someone knows they will answer

hushed mist
#

cool

#

it's a new house, new wiring

#

leviton paddle switch

#

1 of 4 switches that all control the upstairs hallway lights

#

the switch has 5 screw terminals, and there's running to each of them

#

green, two gold, two black

#

on one side of the switch is a black terminal and a gold terminal. a red wire is going into each of those

#

on the other side of the switch is another black terminal and gold terminal, and a white wire is going into each of those

#

coming out of the HASP is a white wire and a black wire

forest edge
#

what country is this?

hushed mist
#

US

#

so the question is, which wires do i connect together, and which wires do i connect to the HASP wires

brisk glen
#

take pictures and post to reddit, always works

forest edge
#

black is power/load white is neutral (this assumes this switch is following US code)

#

green almost always means ground

#

black screw is load gold is neutral, altho usually it's silver on most switches

#

but in the US black always means load/power

#

red can be power too but that's for 3 way applications

hushed mist
#

got it

#

so if i take out the switch, im left with two white wires, two black wires, and a white ground wire

#

so im assuming i'll be "twisting together" pairs of wires

#

and leaving the ground capped by itself

#

so the question is, which wires do i connect together

#

the white/red that are going into the two black terminals?

#

and the white/red that are going into the two gold terminals?

forest edge
#

a white ground wire?

hushed mist

hushed mist
#

two red wires -> black/gold ------- two white wires -> black/gold

forest edge

in a 4way it's a little harder to tell because the electrician could have used anything

red wire in a 3 way are the lead wires, they connect directly from switch to switch to ensure every switch regardless of postion has power

white wire is neutral BUT as i said above

in a 4way they could be lead wires

and my wife would kill me if i tried to hire an electrician now and come do wiring

#

it was right outside my office. i was gonna have an mqtt to the hasp turn the screen red when i was in meetings

#

it was so perfect

#

damn electricity!!!!!!!!

#

i dont get why i need a neutral. isn't electricity still flowing through this box?

#

or is it because this box only has the travelers, whenever one of the other switches turns the light off the hasp would also turn off?

steel crag
#

you need a neutral because of the HASP needs a neutral to power itself

#

there are switches that don't require a neutral present

forest edge
#

no neutral? that dosen't right but whatevver lol

steel crag
#

neutral is prolly the one capped off

#

@hushed mist you said you had 4 switches? controlling the same light?

#

are they all 4 way or are 2 4 way and 2 3 way?

forest edge
#

@brisk glen you had extra additions on the ac like humidifier etc?

#

I like these old guy videos that explain how things work. this should give you an idea of what you are looking at https://youtu.be/Wknz-Beb268 @hushed mist

steel crag
#

this is a pretty good clear diagram too

#

as you can see @hushed mist the neutral is capped but goes all the way to the light from the source

#

this may not be the case in your boxes as they might have run neutral direct

forest edge
#

he wouldn't be able to use it

#

the hasp is not designed to be a 4 way switch

steel crag
#

I know

#

I was just trying to help him understand why he needs a neutral, and why it won't work

#

๐Ÿ˜„

brisk glen
#

@forest edge sadly no

#

This is why I always check my switches or just use smart bulbs

steel crag
#

if I had half a brain I would've gone with smart bulbs in a lot of places

#

but alas.... that's highly dependent on my having more than 50% brain power

brisk glen
#

I chose Phillips hue over lifix due to most wifi gear can handle only 200 devices

#

Adding 50 devices in lights alone will kill most peopleโ€™s networks

steel crag
#

well it wouldn't break mine but would probably burn my house down to have 200 devices

#

@brisk glen and that's just a limitation of /24 subnets really

#

well not 200 but ~250

bitter zinc
#

Do you guys think the ada voice assistant is faster than an alexa?

steel crag
#

I've never used it, I only find Alexa to be slow on my watch tho

#

everything else it's pretty snappy

bitter zinc
#

I have Alexas at my house and they just suck at home assistant commands

#

It takes like 6 seconds to turn on a light from alexa while from my phone its within miliseconds

steel crag
#

how is Alexa connected to HA?

#

oh no mine takes 500ms maybe

bitter zinc
#

You can connect it to home assistant if you have the cloud plan

steel crag
#

from I say "Alexa turn on front room lights" till time the lights go on

#

is about 500ms

bitter zinc
#

Really?

steel crag
#

@bitter zinc I have alexa connected but I do not use the cloud plan

bitter zinc
#

Yeah its more complicated though I just chose the cloud plan for reliability

steel crag
#

we may be breaking the rules here talking shop in the lounge if we go beyond this just FYI

bitter zinc
#

Oh yeah well thanks for the tip

steel crag
#

and continue ๐Ÿ˜„

bitter zinc
#

Ok lol

brisk glen
#

@steel crag no..... its a hardware limitation

steel crag
#

what's a hardware limitation?

hushed basalt
#

Found your latest handiwork @rare condor

steel crag
#

lmfao

#

why is there raw conductor showing out that clip

rare condor
#

:P I wasn't paying 600$ for a LVL 2 sparky to reconnect MCB

hushed basalt
#

Also this

#

Australians are the worst

steel crag
#

@hushed basalt at?

#

LOL

#

also what kind of telco gear you work on?

hushed basalt
#

Old life

#

But field cabling

steel crag
#

I recently quit being a telcotech

hushed basalt
#

And we're the worst at housing, internet,

steel crag
#

but started my own company again

hushed basalt
#

I did a 2 year traineeship so saw a lot of stuff

#

What sort of company

steel crag
#

well I do basically what I did at my old job for more money and have less people screaming at me, I just do it less often because I don't have the customer base I did at my old job

#

but being on an island you don't get to specialize so much, but I've been a programmer all my life

#

I used to install Avaya (red), Ericsson, Cisco, and a host of other PBX's

#

along with 'regular' IT

hushed basalt
#

Nice

steel crag
#

and the company I worked for was also a WISP

hushed basalt
#

I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur

steel crag
#

do it

hushed basalt
#

I'm getting into software engineering atm though

steel crag
#

well if you can do it for someone else, you can do it for yourself

hushed basalt
#

Eventually, but I need to do it for someone else first

steel crag
#

just need to find a niche and jam yourself into it

#

LOL

#

I did for a long time because I had a kid

#

he's 14 now, and I have a lot more breathing room

#

than when I did when he was born

hushed basalt
#

The learning potential and connections drom working at a company are way too good to pass by

#

Yeah I have a 1 year old

wet pilot
#

I would love to do something for my self but I'm a programmer not an idea man

hushed basalt
#

Im an ideas man who's trying to do programming

steel crag
#

phnx what you need to do is hire yourself a good boss

wet pilot
#

Haha

steel crag
#

most people don't get the concept

wet pilot
#

Gotta find the idea man

steel crag
#

well

hushed basalt
#

Ideas are cheap

steel crag
#

well

hushed basalt
#

Useful ideas with the right team, timing, execution, that's hard

steel crag
#

badtelcotech is an idea man, you're a programmer, I'm an entrepreneur. So once I figure out how to make both of you pay me, we are all good.

wet pilot
#

I have a friend who wants to make a game. I hinted that he should look elsewhere because most of my exp is in python and I'd be too expensive to work on it full time and not knowing the language and systems

hushed basalt
#

I have an amazing idea, I'm willing to give you 1% if you design, market, test, build, support it for me

wet pilot
#

Well, not hinted. I told him straight up

steel crag
#

@hushed basalt and I will take half that for pointing you in the right direction

#

welcome to capitalism 101

hushed basalt
#

It's a web app that uses crypto blockchain to find where you parked your car with kubernetes containers

#

It's also like amazon, but for books

wet pilot
#

Oh God

#

So many buzzwords

steel crag
#

LMFAO

#

like amazon, but for books.... wait isn't that what ama.... nevermind

wet pilot
#

My company is attempting kube for their main product. It's not going well

#

Doesn't help that they're starting with an ancient monolith that is still stuck on py2.7

#

My team decided to use docker swarm instead

hushed basalt
#

:3

steel crag
#

your team sounds like they might get things done

wet pilot
#

Yup

steel crag
#

sigh

#

this is exactly why I quit

hushed basalt
#

Kube is like blockchain,

#

If you have to ask you probably don't need it

wet pilot
#

Hahaha

steel crag
#

being expected to build a circus for elephants with flea circus budget

wet pilot
#

They're trying to force us to rewrite things to use kube

hushed basalt
#

The company I'm trying to get into

steel crag
#

force programmers, yeah that's a good idea

hushed basalt
#

They have 500 employees and are a tech company

steel crag
#

that's how you end up with comments in source saying "fuck this guy"

wet pilot
#

We gave them our compose file and said "you figure it out"

hushed basalt
#

And they barely use kube

#

They pretty much use ECS for everything

wet pilot
#

It didn't work but it felt good to have them tell is they couldn't

#

Not wouldn't, couldn't

steel crag
#

can't he said can't /me faints

hushed basalt
#

Are they on the cloud

wet pilot
#

Nope, that's the problem

steel crag
#

doh

hushed basalt
#

Whelp

#

So self managed kube as well

wet pilot
#

They're fixated on an appliance model which doesn't work here

steel crag
#

runs

hushed basalt
#

They should just lift and shift to aws

#

Then migrate to ecs and managed services

#

There. Done. Now pay me my architect fee

steel crag
#

P2V sounds good to me

wet pilot
#

Customers are used to appliance model ๐Ÿ˜ญ

#

I'm just happy I don't work on that product

steel crag
#

shit I have IT guys who are used to appliance model

#

saying virtual is a dirty word in this country

wet pilot
#

We'll just sit here laughing with one click builds and current python
