20 -> 29 is a bit too fast though isn't it?
or can the tests pick it up faster than 14 days?
@last dirge oh heh, i just flipped back to this channel and saw and went on ahead and asked
no covid for me or anyone in the house, yet
genuine question though. I don't know when it starts showing up on tests
I don't know either
no covid for me or anyone in the house, yet
@trail crag that is good
I'm no scientician
@wet pilot depends on how big of a "dose" you get as they put it
why symptoms vary so much around the 2 week mark
makes sense
A friend of mine here locally had suspicions and got them confirmed in what seemed to be a week
I thought back in march they were saying some started have fevers as early as a few days
probably all depends on the "dose" like you said
yea, big diff between someone sneezing in your mouth and you rubbing your nose lol
if someone sneezed in my mouth, I would probably take the awful advice of drinking bleach...
iantrich is not a doctor. iantrichdoes not endorse the practice of drinking bleach. Doing so is dangerous and will kill you. DO NOT drink bleach.
figured you needed some fine print ๐
With @granite hare you never know ๐คทโโ๏ธ
gotta read it really fast like a medical commercial
consult your congressperson for elections lasting more than 4 hours
Wait...bleach will kill you if ingested?!? /s
pretty basic
it makes your insides white
is it caustic or corrosive?
corrosive
can't imagine living the rest of your life with no stomach because you drank bleach lol
assuming you made it to a hospital in time that is
I read something on reddit a while from a doctor responding to a post about someone committing suicide by drinking something horrible
I think it was acid
they said essentially there's no way to "undo" that
I don't think bleach would be as quick unless you did something to concentrate it
but the whole stripping of lipid layer can't be too great for the ol' esophagus
no idea what the time frame would be, guess would also depend on how much you drank but I know stomach pumping dosen't solve the issue
you guys take all the fun out of everything...
wtf is going on here
move along
I said good day sir
Someone is getting tired of being inside all day
Paracetamol overdose is pretty bad too
Or tylenol or whatever you call it
There's a lot of dangerous things in our homes that will send you on a one way trip to the hospital
Coin Cell batteries as well
a tear in your taint
Tears cause tears
My dishwasher costs $0.45 to run on the highest setting including the tablet
I wonder how much cheaper it will be if I run it on a slow eco setting
Find out next week on Dragon Ball Z
I've never heard acetaminophen/Tylenol called "Paracetamol"
It's what it's called in Australia
TIL
But yeah it's not fun stuff
Hey :D
Let's say i'm wanna go all (or almost all) hard-wired for my house AND i don't live in Europe (important because that exclude KNX), do you guys know some good options ?
I don't follow
you want to ethernet whole house? looking just to run random wires whole house for various connections?
Sonoma, are you a car?
When you talk, I feel like I am listening to something with 4 wheels.
@crimson coral not many options I'm afraid
Without going to industrial gear
Raspberry Pis with poe and using their gpios would be a viable option
But you'll be designing/programming all of your own sensors
Isn't paracetomol the actual medical term for the drug? Tylenol is just a brand.
ACKCHUALLY
because it's converting aka splitting the audio out
it's not though
I figured it out, it's gotta do some song and dance routine to do a "handshake" that the displayport spec needs
the KVM switch I got makes no mention of this "feature" it has
it's got a SUPER LOUD piezo speaker that beeps when it detects video input
so that's gettin returned
Few things that would attribute to the cost on that. Both HDMI and DP have separate handshakes. That cable is also an active cable (requiring dedicated power from a separate USB port). And I don't know of a lot of MALE DP ports that can be used as OUTPUT rather than INPUT when converting from another standard.
that's not what that cable does though
it converts HDMI output to Displayport Input
so plug it into a HDMI port on a video card, plug the Displayport end into a monitor
the Displayport to HDMI adapter is $12
other way around, twice as much
and apparently the dual-monitor KVM with Displayport isn't a common need
Likely the active portion of it which is making it that expensive then. Surprised it needs an active line though, with such a relatively short distance.
description says it "may need it"
Usually you only need active power if it's 20ft+
Why don't you just use a DP -> HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable then?
(provided HDMI is enough to actually drive whatever monitor you want to KVM)
because that's not the way it needs to be converted
video card has 3 outputs, Dual link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort
I found this better KVM though
takes advantage of the DisplayPort tech and adds a secondary HDMI output off of the single link from the computers
plus it's USB 3 vs the other noisy beep one that's only USB 2
How often are you gonna need to switch? When I was working from home I found it easy enough to just use two separate inputs on my monitor and a USB hub.
But I was only switching 1-2 times a day.
It's just that every step you introduce, can change the signal. My monitor is a gaming monitor, so I specifically didn't want any sort of KVM or DP hub because it would lose features/refresh.
I used a USB kvm and multiple inputs on my displays
Only needed usb2 for keyboard, mouse, and wireless headset
My monitor has a USB3 hub built into it, so all I did was switch USB ports when switching computers, and switched display inputs. Super simple, everything worked.
yeah, it's not that big of a deal
one monitor's an older 21" acer, the other one's a newer 24" ASUS
I'm not a serious gamer, just like the real estate
I play Rust occasionally
Both mine are trash tier acers ๐
Duals is a bit more annoying. I sprung for a single ultrawide during lockdown for simplicity's sake - plus I get frequent neck issues from looking across multiple monitors.
I'm in desperate need of an upgrade but it needs to be mac compatible
LOL
Stupid work laptop
doesn't it have thunderbolt compatible ports?
Mac have always used pretty uniform standards for monitors at least.
Yeah, it has the stupid 4 usb c ports only
And most of the top-end monitors have USB-C ports that are TB capable.
guaranteed there's a thunderbolt to whatever adapter
Also, I built out a sim racing rig so I gotta figure out some stuff to run cables to both the rig and the desk
B&H sent me an email with "new special price on this monitor
it's a 49" ultrawide curved screen
it's 8K across ๐
whatever regular 4K is high
I'm prolly going to do a 1440 ultrawide
lemme see if I can find it
You really don't want that high a resolution on an Ultrawide (or any workstation monitor really). You sit too close for that level of pixel density.
1440 UW is the tits.
And maybe a 1080 oriented virtually
That's not 8k across, that's standard 1440 superUW ๐
You honestly won't likely need it @wet pilot. I thought I would, but I don't miss it. Sometimes I set up my iPad underneath my monitor using Duet though. That works pretty well.
Eh, just somewhere to sling some coding research or outlook/slack
I'd still have the laptop display though
https://www.samsung.com/au/monitors/odyssey-g9-c49g95t/ This is the new hotness these days. Too much curve on it for my liking though.
Yeah that's pretty nuts. Linus liked it
I just need to see lots of code
The way I have mine set up is a standard 16:9 window in the middle, with two gutters either side used either for research or chat.
Is that manual or are there software tricks to make that work?
MS released a cool tool within PowerToys called FancyZones that allows you to customise all that.
I used to have just two laptops and everything ran through DisplayLink adapters
so I'd switch everything with a single cable
I got macOS though
Some stuff built in apparently
Per workspace at least
Mayyybe
We'll see if black friday actually happens this year
Also about to have a need for a 2nd car after almost 2 years with only 1 so I gotta save some
I just bought an electric bicycle, so hopefully need the car significantly less!
We need a 2nd baby seat capable vehicle unfortunately
Also kinda need a pickup for a lot of house projects
Well, "need"
For the truck at least
Yeah, I don't have that problem. No kids, and considering going to get the โ๏ธ
I figure that if I end up wanting a kid, there's thousands that need a good home.
@rare condor I finished the proof of concept on my solar diverter simulation
It's really lets me demonstrate how important reducing heat loss and strategic thermal mass can make a solar diverter way more useful
Yeah it only makes sense if you have reasonable thermal insulation
Air tightness is a big factor as well. @rare condor
Yeah which means it's not relevant in Aus :P
:'(
Especially your wood stud houses
Brick veneer is terrible but the internal mass can be taken advantage of
It really does lag a heatwave here
I was very disappointed with "winter" this year. Didn't even drop below 10 degrees at any point in my suburb ๐ฆ
Bloody climate change.
I have done real world testing in my house and it poses no benefit unless I heat up to 30c + for the temp to reach 20c when back home
Cheaper to get 10c feeding payback for me and heat on demand
I can finally turn my solar on next week after having it installed for a full month. Bloody energy providers are so slow to action anything.
@rare condor
Crappy House no Solar Diverter
Crappy House with Solar Diverter
Better House no solar diverter
Better House with Solar Diverter
3 Day period with the identical PV generation
Is that for controlled load hot water redirector @hushed basalt?
I considered it for my place, but controlled load cost is only 2c more than my FIT, so don't think it'd be worth it.
Sort of
Basically for the demo, you put in a list of entities to monitor as well as their estimated load, a turn_on_action and a turn_off_action
So I have thermostats, where the turn_on_action is set the temp to 25, and turn off action is set the temp to 20 etc
And it looks at how much surplus power you have available, sorts the loads that can be 'turned on' by the priority that you set, sees if there's enough surplus power to turn that one on, and then turns it on
And the same in reverse when there's power being imported from the grid
But the big thing with diverters is the ability to use 'excess power'. I.e. rather than turn on 2400w heating load you control the output based off available extra i.e. 1823w or something. This is pretty expensive but required as solar fluctuates massively throughout the day
Ohh right, so kinda like a solar usage optimiser.
I have kinda written a simplistic one of those myself. Looks at cloudiness forecast, and lets me know if I should schedule high power usage tasks for that day (dishwasher/washing machine/etc).
Would definitely be helpful for places that need constant heating/have pools.
Same with cooling as well
But yeah when I get the chance I'll get my mum set up with power monitoring
And set it to work on her house
As she has 3 aircons, a pool pump, a pool heater and solar panels
Yeah, I guess using an optimiser to cool a house down while there's still daylight would be better than trying to cool it down when you get home. I have all my ACs hooked up to Broadlink IR blasters, so I might have to modify my solar controller to do that ๐
Heh, funnily enough - so is mine ๐
Do you have solar panels and monitoring
Yes. Not turned on yet though, because Energy Australia have been fucking slack at getting the meter upgraded to support feed in.
Fronius inverter + smart meter.
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
anybody using water/leak sensors?
I've got a couple
what communication protocol?
I'm still looking for a way to control my water heater, this guys diverting solar power
@last dirge got a few as well. ZW
@tidal bronze what kind?
https://smile.amazon.com/Haozee-Sensor-Detector-Remote-Resistantยกยญ/dp/B07XL21QJF/ I was looking at those
person in the reviews specifically mentions HomeAssistant
my water heater's been in service for 13 years so it's kind of in the scary zone
@last dirge I've got an Aeotec z-wave sensor and a samsung zigbee sensor
I like the form factor of the samsung sensor the best
form factor doesn't really matter
they'll all be hidden
I guess the main thing is going to be what battery it uses and how often it needs new ones
@last dirge more than a year
samsung sensor uses a CR2 battery and mine is reporting 93% after 3 months
I don't have a zigbee radio
you should get one ๐
You should run both
I don't wanna have to re-pair everything
is there a zigbee only stick that doesn't suck?
or is the Nortek stick still the go-to?
Run zigbee and zw both.
@amber bramble I don't like the fact that one's gotta either have the water drip on the top of the thing or it's gotta sit in the water
it looks good though
the one I linked can work like that or it's got a little sensor dongle you can put wherever you want it to detect
I think I like that
Zigbee stuff is sooo much cheaper
Yes they are.
yeah i wish z-wave gear was less expensive
Best is to mix and match
Been very happy with GE in wall sensors. No more battery issues.
ge in-wall sensors whaaaat
it's part of a light switch
I bought one to replace a failed switch but haven't done the switcheroo yet
ah those
https://byjasco.com/ge-z-wave-plus-smart-motion-switch switched out all with these. Couldn't be happier.
the switch that died is for a fart fan, doesn't make much sense to have a motion sensor there
i replaced all my z-wave switches with inovellis
granted i only had 3 of them at the time
They are good too. I have few modules from them too.
I think the mini relay switch.
my next purchase when i have money again is going to be inovelli's combo ceiling fan/light switches with the canopy modules
I changed from GE zwave fan modules to ifan03
Only if they had a module that supports reverse feature
@last dirge my water heater is only 2 years old but the $100 timer I bought crapped out and now I have to manually turn it on and off
i just replaced my water heater last month
why are you turning it on and off?
fart fan @last dirge ?
yes, fart fan
I was about to ask ๐
it sprung a leak like 2 weeks after i put a water sensor under it and installed a dome z-wave shutoff valve on the main water line ๐
I turn it on and off because electricity is very expensive in The Bahamas, and I truthfully only need it on 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour at night at best
Electric then. Haven't seen one of those in ages.
our power company charges fuel surchage on top of per kilowatt
and the fuel charge is often more than the price of electricity
my usage is around $100 but my fuel charge can be $160-$190 depending on the price of fuel
so $290 for a single guy is a bit much
so I've been searching for a way to connect it reliably to HA
I also don't arrive/leave home at the same time so the ability for me to have an automation turn it on when I'm on the way home would be clutch
and also off when I leave
why that instead of a solar unit?
because I don't have $1000+ for a solar unit
importing anything into the country has shipping costs, and import duty associated with it
my heater was about $300 and I installed it myself
what's the break even on electricity though?
10y isn't bad. i thought it was typically considered that if you beat 20 you're in the black
7 years now
oh ๐
my roof is too small and my power too cheap for it to make sense
Tesla pricing brings is closer to 5
anyone have a good calculator?
@wet pilot what kind of calculator?
the one on google's project sunroof is pretty good
@wet pilot when I say wouldn't I mean 10 years was a joke
oh ๐
I was quoted $15,000 to solar my home
@wet pilot you will have to run your own numbers if you want to be super accurate
Most system sizing based on billing is way off
Actually what was $ per watt?
I don't have access to the quote anymore but I believe it was for 5Kw panels and 5Kw genset
apparently i'm looking at a 18.6k USD system (after incentives) and my break even is just under 9 years
25,2
@wet pilot system size kDC?
10.5
Before incentives?
but that's a bit higher than it probably will be because its assuming 4 extra panels that my HOA won't allow
25.2k USD
Just setup my new HASS layout ๐
only federal incentives here
so day drinking on a Sunday ok for coding?
** looks at bottle of rum **
@wet pilot 2.4/W not bad. Tesla pricing is now is about $1.49/W
@wet pilot if Tesla installs in your state, get them
I want a powerwall
i'm not sure if they do
but I also want my testicles
and if you decide to get them, lemme know
and Tesla definitely don't install in The Bahamas
you can use my link and I think get some kind of bonus
i'm not really in a rush right now, there are a bunch of other things on my list
we only have 5 tesla cars here
It will hit $1/W
fed tax credit goes down after this year
and they all go to US for anything they need
it's only $500 to ship a Tesla to Miami for service
oooh, you'll get a cool $100 reward if you use my link
Almost there: I think the text colour is a bit off though.
and if you own a Tesla here, you have that in your top pocket
@steel crag that seems way cheap
@last dirge why didn't you tell me about the link. ? lol
where I am in The Bahamas only about 160 miles from Miami
so it's a short boat ride
maybe 10 hours on a slow boat
"short"
@tidal bronze because you were shit talking Tesla so I figured you wouldn't use them
did they install yet?
@rare condor it takes 23 hours to get to one of our southern islands from here
and that's domestic travel
sooooo 10 to another country is short
Got them to revise the plan 4 times. ๐ Still at it. @last dirge
I'll send you the link then
yeah, tesla doesn't install here
and considering you can do it in 4-6 hours if you not on a cargo boat taking cars.....
their pre-incentive is 16.4k for 8.16kW
I've lived in Europe, used to take me 2 hours to get to work
Send me the link @last dirge Getting 2nd inverter for free now. Waiting for new plans.
3 days in Aus travelling at 100km/h non stop and I still can't reach Perth
taking train to bus station then taking bus to work
another 10.7k if i add 2 powerwalls
lol how do you do that?
lol
free > *
@wet pilot where are you?
NC
If you are in a fire zone 3 and run medical equipment at home city gives it for free, @wet pilot
ah gotcha
Power walls will get better. Tesla is going with Panasonic cells now.
vs their own?
They are trying hard to dump the existing ones
I supposed I could order like 10000 panasonic 18650's and just wire my own
๐
there's someplace that sells LG's here for $20 each
are 26650s available?
i think that's what tesla is using these days
a bit better on density
I like Tesla's but I would not like the stigma of been a Tesla Driver
People thinking I love Elon Musk and been arrogent etc.
ah 21700. i knew they were using a larger cell but i couldn't remember the dimensions
26650s were being used in vaporizers for a bit there
Elon Musk and Tesla's are great wdym
wonder if that's good or bad ๐ค
.c2f 48
48 degrees celsius = 118.4 degrees fahrenheit!
yikes
Ouch... We have a peak of 32C here today, I don't want to imagine 48
There's something weird going on with Arm from what I read. There was news about the Chinese subsidiary CEO refusing to leave and had hired a personal army to defend him
You mean ARM got armed?
Not sure what the full story is but it's worth checking it out. Seemed pretty spicy
Isn't ARM China's division having a hostile takeover?
As in CEO got fired but refuses to leave and seized control of company
.f2c 96
96 degrees fahrenheit = 35.56 degrees celsius!
So currently that here with 98% humidity. Heat index of 107
And its overcast and about to rain
@wet pilot 26650's in this town? Nah. Lucky to have the one place selling 18650's
haha
This is my last day using dark sky ๐ฆ
This is The Bahamas. We have every kind of alcohol known to man. Electronic parts... not in great demand on the beach
I would die in that weather
I get that weather in Illinois, lol
sometimes
but we also get the opposite cold-wise
this is the coolest weather we have in a while
.c2f 19
19 degrees celsius = 66.2 degrees fahrenheit!
That's what we have now. A bit too chill for my liking, but not too bad
anybody else in here do photography?
A little, but being one to sit at the PC all day, it kinda went away
my phone can take pictures
@last dirge what's the photo question
got any recs on a bag for a body and two lenses?
I don't understand the differences in style between the adjectives they use
a messenger style bag would be what?
sling?
I just ignore the names and look at them,
or would that still be considered shoulder?
and HOLY SHIT are lenses expensive as hell
You'll probably have a lens attached to a body and one loose
Lol everything is relative
I got a used Fujifilm X-T2
I worked for a company that had $60k lenses or sets of primes worth north of $100k
and a 35mm f1.4 prime lens
When a 120mm pola filter was $1200 it puts everything in a twisted perspective
okay how about recommendations on what features I should look for in a bag; what's a gimmick and what's useful?
Bags are really subjective so you may just be better off going to a store and trying
Umm
Simple is best
One flap to open to get everything is better than six compartments
Also think about how they look in terms of attractiveness to thieves
Lowepro semi rigid bags will protect your gear from damage but screams steal me
A generic soft messsnger bag will be less attractive
If you want you can get a small lowepro side load backpack
And carry a mavic, camera, lenses and a small lunch all in one
A bag with an integrated weather protector is nice
like a rain fly?
Yeah
But i wouldn't worry about one for a messenger bag you'd want that to have some light rain protection inbuilt
It just depends do you want an everyday carry normal bag that can take your camera
Or a dedicated bag just for the camera, batteries, lenses, charger etc
doesn't have to be a single bag
Lowepro is pretty good value in certain ranges
I'd like one I could toss my laptop and the camera stuff in for going on vacation probably
I'd get a backpack if you want something you can put in an overhead locker
Ones that open from the side
So you can swing the backpack around your body and get the camera without putting it down/taking it off
it's a mirrorless camera so I guess the bags can be smaller
you mean something like this? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119687-REG/lowepro_lp36870_fastpack_150_aw_ii.html
Yeah something like that is worth looking at in a store
150 size
Only small laptop though
I wasn't expecting bags to be the first thing in town your mind. Telco has good advice though
You'd need to go up to a 200 if you want to carry a 13" probably
laptop size, you mean?
Yeah
I'm probably going to end up getting a new laptop sooner rather than later
my current laptop is a ThinkPad and it's a beast
You're not going to be doing much flying soon anyways
If you want a dedicated bag
Messenger bags I don't have much experience with
But I'd go for something that doesn't look "photo"
For protection nothing beats this line
if this didn't have the logo on the front, it'd be perfect
Yeah there's a trillion shoulder bag designs
I'd just look in your local store for something you like
Then buy it on amazon =3
Look at how much padding is in the floor of the bag
How rigid it holds it's structure
this takes really damn good photos
Good strap, a big wide foamy shoulder strap is nice
oh, that's another thing
I assume the strap that came with the camera is the minimum viable thing
did someone kill image sharing in here again?
I like this kind of camera strap: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Release-Perfect-including-Warranty-HiiGuy/dp/B01NASPXSR
Easy to leave it over one shoulder all the time but still be able to pull your camera up in front without resistance.
I can't stand having a camera hanging off the back of my neck. Side carry all the way.
that clamp is kinda scary
Yeah, mine's a little 'safer' than that. I've never worried that it might come undone.
Gotta use a decent amount of force to depress the gate and still have to turn it 90ยบ to the camera to slide it through.
There are other brands with various different attachment systems, it's just the side carry that I find works well for both comfort and convenience.
got any recommendations for a small flash?
I'd recommend something like that also
If you don't need to put it on a tripod the strap mounts on the bottom are best
I'm not sure what the interfaces for fuji are like in terms of flash
My guess is you're probably looking at $250USD+ for a decent flash
You picked an expensive hobby
@last dirge I got mine off amazon I'll dig a link
I used to support myself entirely as a photographer
Now I also have 5 drones
cool
I'm hoping to move toward generating some extra income via photography eventually
it's an expensive one to get into but once you do you can help offset the cost of gear LOL
I've always flown R/C, used to build planes from scratch as a kid
but these quadcopters are the easiest things to fly ever
when I did aerial photography as a kid, we had a 35mm in the fuselage and it was activated by a spare channel on the remote
and you had to land to wind to advance LOL
now it's like look ma, streaming 4k with no hands
and you had to go to the drug store to get your filmed developed
walking there through the snow
uphill both ways
I thought that was a universal thing
you had to go to the photography shop, or be like me and have family that had a photo studio
I used to develop my black and white at home in the bathroom
and my color in the studio
color film was about $40 a roll back then
soooooo.... I used it sparingly
if you never swapped rolls of film halfway thru, and then swap back, did you even really take pictures
LOL
While much more effective, this is also a lot more dangerous than the Presto hotdogger. I really don't recommend trying this at home, as the exposed electrodes pose a high shock risk.
This time the sausage roll (extruded sausage-like stuff in a puff pastry sleeve) was thoroug...
when I saw electricity + food I knew it was Clive
sure but I saw the picture first
@night zodiac did you see the "hotdog cooker" that essentially put hot dogs between the mains?
@last dirge I know man ๐
@steel crag so ISO used to be "baked in" to film?
yup
I used to shoot on 800
because I could do what I needed to to make that work in almost any situation
but I transitioned to digital around 2000-2001
I had a Fuji digital point and shoot but shot Nikon professionally
and Olympus for personal
but now I've got a Canon T3i
with a few pieces of glass
nothing crazy
God I'm old
Heh.
I find it funny how someone could be "Playing" Visual Studio Code. || *looks at @thick crypt ||
๐
I find it funny how someone could be "Playing" Visual Studio Code. || *looks at @thick crypt ||
@undone aspen it's like playing "the keyboard", but then in programming style instead of music ๐
Hehehehe
Lol you can even see the file and project ๐ฎ (where is my privacy?!) ๐
That is why I only had that extension installed for about 5 minutes before I switched to just using the built-in jazz and adding it as a game
25 on clearance? wow lol
@forest edge wait 23 years will come down to the antique price ๐
And then you will say "these hue bulbs were built like a tank" ๐
cept we already know hue bulbs are cheaper Chinese bulbs with diffrent branding lol
I don't understand you man. So confuse
the hues are their own design
you never seen the hue bulb tear down videos?>
signify makes their bulbs
@forest edge no idea and not interested.
@tidal bronze lol well there you go, so in 23 years the price will come down and I'll still think a penny is too much ๐
what does that mean?
@forest edge I've seen some people a few weeks back say their walmarts were on clearance for $25, my local store just put them out for $25 last night and I picked some up today. May be worth checking your local walmart ๐
In 2023 you will go "back in 2020, they knew how to make bulbs, so reliable and built to withstand anything"..... So confuse @forest edge
that will never happen, the days of quality are long gone @tidal bronze
Arhhhh get outta here. You an your antiques
will be like comparing dog turd vs wolf turd down the road
so what smart lighting solution do you have @forest edge?
also imo wolf turd > dog turd
So you think the manual churning, ice cube ice cream maker with the top handle is the shit ? ๐@forest edge
@tame moss I got some off branded magic home garbage that I paid 5 bucks for a year ago or so
@tidal bronze no but you can't deny that will continue to work long after you fancy italian named 52 button silver stainless contraption stops working lol
so how bright do those off branded bulbs get
@tame moss sure, may as well be lol
they light up the night
people on the space station often complain i'm blinding them
oh alright
they are just cheap chinese bulbs, nothing special but they don't need a hub and they aren't over priced lol
how do they connect? z wave? wifi?
wifi
although pretty sure they may make zigbee versions
ive tried multiple different "non hub" marketed bulbs and had many reliability issues
So you wear one of these to install and test them ?
lmao "yes welder"
nah he's gotta use these @tidal bronze https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0047/6404/1314/products/viewpoint_1200x1200.png?v=1576469903
@tidal bronze don't be jealous lol
it's pretty amazing what a difference the right gear makes
thats why i drive an automatic
imagine having a transmission
imagine having a way of transporation

gotta engage the safety squints
imagine not realizing a gearbox is a manual transmission

Internet?
load cells under the beds and couches as presence detection?
@rare condor I guess. I need season 2 of the internet. I'm done with this season.
I canโt believe it ended that way!
IKR? who would have thought pornhub had that many videos also
I have some tasmota devices that were added to homeassistant through discovery. Ive finally got around to replacing them but how do I tell homeassistant to forget them?
For parents, what are you using as night lights
All the smart bulbs I've seen are too bright
my kid's 14, so the TV+PS4
@hushed basalt each bedroom has a hue bulb in a lamp and there's a remote for it with a 1% brightness preset
still brighter than a "night light" though
i have wall-mounted tablets in each bedroom too, overnight they go to a black screen on 1% brightness which provides a tiny bit of a glow
wall mounted tablets also make great "emergency" lights in an overnight power outage ๐คฃ
Yeah I already have hue bulbs they're too bright
Tablets could work for our forever home
I might just get an ordinary night light and put it on a smart socket
my sonoff touchs also have blue LED's on them that I have set to on when the switch is off
@hushed basalt I have a regular nightlight I could connect to a sonoff, that's a good Idea. I already have my attic lamp on one also.
I could use the LED light on the smart socket :D
Although it's blue and you should avoid blue light at night
Anyone have any suggestions for Floorplan creators?
following
Found this, it seems to work alright
Now I just need to take a tape measure to everything in my house lol
Or get a cool laser measurement tool: Bosch GLM 50 Laser Distance Measurer with 165-Feet Range and Backlit Display https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006XA7HOI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aIIjFbTEXE94W
Super quick and accurate. Plus itโs an excuse to buy a tool
I'd like a good self leveling laser
Ok, i have gotten everything ready to finally setup guest and iot vlans
its mainly extra wifi networks on both routers incase i break the switches
good stuff.
hmmm... My state has curfew after 8PM now
I literally cannot leave my house at all as I finish work by 8:30PM
Does the curfew include work?
Just say you need to repair a faulty PLC at McDonalds
carry a soldering iron in your pocket all the time just in case lol
High vis vest and a clipboard
@hushed basalt We have already been given letters from every council in the state, permitting my travel. I can head anywhere without issue.
If police pull me over I have valid excuse to be out of home
I could abuse that but I don't intend to
I think tomorrow Bunnings/Maccas/ everything except super markets will close and those which service that supply chain.
Thought I'd share my lovelace layout. Big thank you to Tinkerer, mono and others who helped along the way.

@rare condor because of covid?
or because of riots
covid
I take it like us, it's been getting worse there?
When late stage capitalism meets a global pandemic
Hey changing from political topics. Lol. I just bought an elitedesk mini pc to migrate my HA install to (my install is getting too big and too slow for a rpi). Whatโs the preferred Install method ha on a dedicated intel PC?
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
(more for the support question than the Rona chat)
I'm saying the topic says 'NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE'.
Take it to another channel. Read the topics of each until you find the right one.
@plucky yew all matter of preference and opinion. your not going to see much in difference in performance between install methods per say so you should just go with whatever you are comfortable with

totally offtopic but i wonder how is using a ipad as a controller for HA ? i was thinking about seraching for a wallwount with power
Someone over in #hardware-archived will probably have tips.
oops ty ๐
some people do that, it's as simple as opening the interface in the browser or even using the kiosk mode. if you search through #diy-archived you'll even see some custom mounts and other ideas people have had @tame cove
HA has forums too https://community.home-assistant.io/categories
@rare condor my country has been on curfew since March
we've also had total lockdowns
currently curfew is 10pm and we were meant to be locked down this weekend but relaxed because of the hurricanee
what country
The Bahamas
we also blocked commercial flights from the US
but I think someone got butthurt and they told us we couldn't do that, so we make all travelers quarantine for 2 weeks so now no one wants to come

absolutely amazing for our tourism based economy

Hey guys how can i szns udp data
I jabe a video slicer that take udp data at port 4000
curl cht.sh/tcpdump
tcpdump for udp ๐ง
@steel crag have you used any Godox stuff?
hey all. very dumb newbie question: i installed HA in docker on my RPI using the docker compose configuration on the installation page. how do i get the add-on store? is that only a hass.io thing and i have to do my installation differently?
add-on store is only available for #330990055533576204
you can look into HACS if you want something similar
can homeassistant os run inside docker?
ok, thanks!
Anyone using Fireboad 2 with HA?
no but thanks for linking it. I will try to find a use for it
I like the built-in graphing
my father might like it for his plants
for the water
@last dirge ๐ DIY blower seems a stretch so looking for alternatives
meh, they'd all probably be the same temp
I just realized what its use is for, lmao
They are all in the same price range. Fireboard comes with API but don't see fan control via API
it's kinda fun how the quality from the vessel in space was better than the connection from the boat ๐

The FINAL Raspberry Pi Cluster series episode! In this episode, I review the Turing Pi. Is it worth $189? When will it start shipping? Why would I even build a Pi Cluster in the first place?
tl;dw: It depends. It's not the best cluster you can buy, but for some use cases (esp...

anyone able to help me with an electrical wiring question?
trying to swap out my current switch for an HASP
@hushed mist ask the question, if someone knows they will answer
cool
it's a new house, new wiring
leviton paddle switch
1 of 4 switches that all control the upstairs hallway lights
the switch has 5 screw terminals, and there's running to each of them
green, two gold, two black
on one side of the switch is a black terminal and a gold terminal. a red wire is going into each of those
on the other side of the switch is another black terminal and gold terminal, and a white wire is going into each of those
coming out of the HASP is a white wire and a black wire
what country is this?
US
so the question is, which wires do i connect together, and which wires do i connect to the HASP wires
take pictures and post to reddit, always works
black is power/load white is neutral (this assumes this switch is following US code)
green almost always means ground
black screw is load gold is neutral, altho usually it's silver on most switches
but in the US black always means load/power
red can be power too but that's for 3 way applications
got it
so if i take out the switch, im left with two white wires, two black wires, and a white ground wire
so im assuming i'll be "twisting together" pairs of wires
and leaving the ground capped by itself
so the question is, which wires do i connect together
the white/red that are going into the two black terminals?
and the white/red that are going into the two gold terminals?
a white ground wire?
there's a white wire that's going to the green terminal
interesting
If in doubt, use a multimeter...
you said 4 lights? did the hasp turn on 2 lights with a single button?
the HASP has never been installed
there's one "set" of hallways lights
and 4 different switches all do the same thing
control those lights
oh
it's a 4way mess lol
two red wires -> black/gold ------- two white wires -> black/gold
in a 4way it's a little harder to tell because the electrician could have used anything
red wire in a 3 way are the lead wires, they connect directly from switch to switch to ensure every switch regardless of postion has power
white wire is neutral BUT as i said above
in a 4way they could be lead wires
using a meter to test is your best best
i have a meter
what am i looking for
and what do i need to be careful not to touch together so i don't blow myself or the meter up
you are putting a hasp in?
i want to!
@hushed mist you may wanna just call an electrician cause unless you know what your doing you are diving into a mess.. you are replacing one switch in a 4way config with a hasp
thats a real cluster lol
it would be diffrent if it wasn't a 3/4 way
why does the hasp not have a ground wire?
not everything requires a ground
and some times you buy the wrong hardware ๐
I had to ask reddit before installing my ecobee
only 4 wires and no control board
that was a fun one
boo
in the end he just vlanned it
was so excited to install this today
3 ways are easy once you learn how they work and cause you are dealing with only one red wire, 4 way is diffrent cause you havve multiples of the same color
You might want to ask in #add-ons-archived
This is where all the non-HA chat happens.
Oh snap. I actually thought I was. Sorry
@forest edge thank you for the help!
@forest edge sent the photos to a friend who's an electrician....he said there's no neutral in that box, so i can't put the hasp there ๐ฆ
this is why I hate multiple hard wired switches controlling the same thing
LOL
I have a 2 way that I hate, gonna convert it to one way, and have two sonoff touch's control it
i wanna scream
this was the perfect spot
and my wife would kill me if i tried to hire an electrician now and come do wiring
it was right outside my office. i was gonna have an mqtt to the hasp turn the screen red when i was in meetings
it was so perfect
damn electricity!!!!!!!!
i dont get why i need a neutral. isn't electricity still flowing through this box?
or is it because this box only has the travelers, whenever one of the other switches turns the light off the hasp would also turn off?
you need a neutral because of the HASP needs a neutral to power itself
there are switches that don't require a neutral present
no neutral? that dosen't right but whatevver lol
neutral is prolly the one capped off
@hushed mist you said you had 4 switches? controlling the same light?
are they all 4 way or are 2 4 way and 2 3 way?
@brisk glen you had extra additions on the ac like humidifier etc?
I like these old guy videos that explain how things work. this should give you an idea of what you are looking at https://youtu.be/Wknz-Beb268 @hushed mist
this is a pretty good clear diagram too
as you can see @hushed mist the neutral is capped but goes all the way to the light from the source
this may not be the case in your boxes as they might have run neutral direct
I know
I was just trying to help him understand why he needs a neutral, and why it won't work
๐
if I had half a brain I would've gone with smart bulbs in a lot of places
but alas.... that's highly dependent on my having more than 50% brain power
I chose Phillips hue over lifix due to most wifi gear can handle only 200 devices
Adding 50 devices in lights alone will kill most peopleโs networks
well it wouldn't break mine but would probably burn my house down to have 200 devices
@brisk glen and that's just a limitation of /24 subnets really
well not 200 but ~250
Do you guys think the ada voice assistant is faster than an alexa?
I've never used it, I only find Alexa to be slow on my watch tho
everything else it's pretty snappy
I have Alexas at my house and they just suck at home assistant commands
It takes like 6 seconds to turn on a light from alexa while from my phone its within miliseconds
You can connect it to home assistant if you have the cloud plan
from I say "Alexa turn on front room lights" till time the lights go on
is about 500ms
Really?
@bitter zinc I have alexa connected but I do not use the cloud plan
Yeah its more complicated though I just chose the cloud plan for reliability
we may be breaking the rules here talking shop in the lounge if we go beyond this just FYI
Oh yeah well thanks for the tip
Ok lol
@steel crag no..... its a hardware limitation
what's a hardware limitation?
:P I wasn't paying 600$ for a LVL 2 sparky to reconnect MCB
I recently quit being a telcotech
And we're the worst at housing, internet,
but started my own company again
well I do basically what I did at my old job for more money and have less people screaming at me, I just do it less often because I don't have the customer base I did at my old job
but being on an island you don't get to specialize so much, but I've been a programmer all my life
I used to install Avaya (red), Ericsson, Cisco, and a host of other PBX's
along with 'regular' IT
Nice
and the company I worked for was also a WISP
I've always wanted to be an entrepreneur
do it
I'm getting into software engineering atm though
well if you can do it for someone else, you can do it for yourself
Eventually, but I need to do it for someone else first
just need to find a niche and jam yourself into it
LOL
I did for a long time because I had a kid
he's 14 now, and I have a lot more breathing room
than when I did when he was born
The learning potential and connections drom working at a company are way too good to pass by
Yeah I have a 1 year old
I would love to do something for my self but I'm a programmer not an idea man
Im an ideas man who's trying to do programming
phnx what you need to do is hire yourself a good boss
Haha
most people don't get the concept
Gotta find the idea man
well
Ideas are cheap
well
Useful ideas with the right team, timing, execution, that's hard
badtelcotech is an idea man, you're a programmer, I'm an entrepreneur. So once I figure out how to make both of you pay me, we are all good.
I have a friend who wants to make a game. I hinted that he should look elsewhere because most of my exp is in python and I'd be too expensive to work on it full time and not knowing the language and systems
I have an amazing idea, I'm willing to give you 1% if you design, market, test, build, support it for me
Well, not hinted. I told him straight up
@hushed basalt and I will take half that for pointing you in the right direction
welcome to capitalism 101

My company is attempting kube for their main product. It's not going well
Doesn't help that they're starting with an ancient monolith that is still stuck on py2.7
My team decided to use docker swarm instead

your team sounds like they might get things done
Yup
Hahaha
being expected to build a circus for elephants with flea circus budget
They're trying to force us to rewrite things to use kube
The company I'm trying to get into
force programmers, yeah that's a good idea
They have 500 employees and are a tech company
that's how you end up with comments in source saying "fuck this guy"
We gave them our compose file and said "you figure it out"
It didn't work but it felt good to have them tell is they couldn't
Not wouldn't, couldn't
can't he said can't /me faints
Are they on the cloud
Nope, that's the problem
doh
They're fixated on an appliance model which doesn't work here
runs
They should just lift and shift to aws
Then migrate to ecs and managed services
There. Done. Now pay me my architect fee
P2V sounds good to me
Customers are used to appliance model ๐ญ
I'm just happy I don't work on that product
shit I have IT guys who are used to appliance model
