#

I bought veg trug sensors that were labeled as xiami probes

deft pewter
#

I might look in to whether you can persist the messages. The only thing that annoys me slightly is that after a restart, HA doesn't immediately see the stats.

night zodiac
#

I have like 15 sensors I am waiting to set up

#

labeling them seems fun

hushed basalt
#

@rare condor I doubt the ram would be faulty, but there's a chance the sticks aren't playing nice with my mobo setup,

#

I ordered the same SKU to add 2 x 8GB to an existing 2 x 8GB setup,

#

But fingers crossed it's not that

#

I need to setup kdump etc to look at the kernel messages

#

But time, more time, more fun,

#

Also I'll need to check that the firmware on my LSI card is the right version for proxmox 6.2 etc

#

All time sinks

hushed basalt
#

Unlucky haha

#

At least it's amazons problem

night zodiac
#

yeah, I only need 1 anyways

#

I just bought 3 because fek it

#

I'm trying to keep a stock of parts to where I don't have to wait 3 days every time I think of an idea

hushed basalt
#

Do you know about JIT, kanban, those sort of concepts

night zodiac

From a quick google, not at all.

#

I know about JIT compilation ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

In regards to inventory,

#

It's about techniques to manage inventory levels,

#

With the ideal scenario of having just enough to never run out but never more than you need/ don't use soon enough

#

There's a lot to go into but here's a real world example of one style/implementation

#

@night zodiac

night zodiac

hushed basalt
rare condor
#

Nice, thats really sweet

#

Great to have a system for this

hushed basalt
#

I doubt I'll be able to build a rack for the parts organisers until we have a house

#

But it's still a huge help

#

Being able to know where to go for that 25mm bugle head wood screw, or that 40mm long M4 button head fastener,

#

As well as knowing what I have, and more importantly what I am almost out of

rare condor
#

I was just speaking to a friend about using din mounted power meter, he is just mounting it in his rack server with no insulation, some point don't care I guess.

#

Yeah organisation is paramount for hardware

#

Its a really nice change to have proper mounting

deft pewter
#

What do you all do for mounting smaller stuff? I've got various USB dongles on extension cables just sitting on my desk right now. Thinking of maybe using pegboard to tidy those up.

forest edge
#

It's not a feature request! it's a necessity! @light trout j/k I only posted about it cause i thought it was odd there was no way to access the repo link from that window at that time

But it seems a bit big for my current needs and I'm not sure what else I'd end up adding to it. My router/pi/etc are all in a TV console, so there's nothing to tidy.

#

Is that cable tied directly to a wall? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

hushed basalt
deft pewter
#

Oh, that makes sense

#

Howe big are they? I just tried to look for something similar at a local hardware store and the smallest dimensions they have are 19mmยฒ

forest edge
#

why not use a usb hub that can be attached directly to a surface?

deft pewter
#

I don't want a hub, no need for one.

#

Might go the cable tie route. Gotta work now though, will do more research tonight. Cheers

hushed basalt
#

Try searching for cable tie mounts. They make them in all sizes

#

You want to match the width of your cable tie to the mount

the one thing to keep in mind about smart vents is that you can only close 10%....if u do anymore u risk messing things up with the AC flow and possible unit due to the pressure

night zodiac

Yeah, I coded it from hand first and then learned about how esphome works

#

I set it all up with the normal branch and then realized the beta branch supported my device specifically

#

I'm guessing they have a rolling beta release since it was so fresh, the date

#

or I was lucky on my timing

deft pewter

Can already do that using monitor on any Linux device but it'd be great to do it on ESP's

well, yeah. you want to keep the same record rather than making a new one

deft pewter

Each time a mobile device broadcasts its MAC address, it's random to avoid stalking. Devices that have successfully paired with it know its name, and can 'call out' with the name to see if it's nearby.

Hi, does anyone have any ideas where you could get some python help?

@halcyon ridge About Home Assistant?

I'm trying to create an "advanced" automation that I beleive I need to write some python magic for. I can do basic python, but my skills are a bit limited when it comes to what I'm trying to do ๐Ÿ™‚

midnight adder
#

I thought people used ssh to have it run localy (Like when configuring a AP)

#

@dusky plank
maybe you ll find a usecase for you

#

ssh is the way to connect to machines, want to configure a website, use SSH.
Want to restart, use SSH.

while true
do
echo "Want to do ... , use SSH"
done
#

I know

#

But you could use ssh on a different port

dusky plank
#

@midnight adder thanks will try it as soon as i get sshd running on the company machine, runs windows so either I go full wsl or just openssh

midnight adder
#

it is then still ssh traffic, firewalls are aware due to DPI

#

you are a terrible person ๐Ÿ˜„

#

@dusky plank You could also use parsec

lol, even the website is blocked

What's wrong with teamviewer

dusky plank

everything is sent via 3rd party

midnight adder
#

in general, you can read out the connection credencials,
there was a 8+ CVE around a couple of monts ago
(didnt bortherd to look to much into it)

#

Let me use my proxy to see whats sent

grave reef
#

I switched to Jump Desktop about a year ago and haven't looked back since

#

It does cost money, and it's not the most popular solution, but it works for me

midnight adder
#

Does that work on linux?

#

linux - xrdp on localhost + ssh tunnel
easy and works flawlesly

grave reef
#

Should be. It can connect to any VNC server

#

Another option I've heard good things about is AnyDesk

midnight adder
#

I also use microsoft remote desktop.

grave reef
#

Haven't used it extensively though so can't comment on its specifics

midnight adder
#

ok only a 7.2 CVE

An issue was discovered in TeamViewer 14.2.2558. Updating the product as a non-administrative user requires entering administrative credentials into the GUI. Subsequently, these credentials are processed in Teamviewer.exe, which allows any application running in the same non-administrative user context to intercept them in cleartext within process memory. By using this technique, a local attacker is able to obtain administrative credentials in order to elevate privileges. This vulnerability can be exploited by injecting code into Teamviewer.exe which intercepts calls to GetWindowTextW and logs the processed credentials.```

Hey guys, this is a bit of a dumb question. But given home assistant is software based, how do I use it as a hub for z-wave devices? Wouldnโ€™t hardware like hubitat be required? I think Iโ€™m just missing how to bridge z-wave devices to home assistant without some sort of bridge device

dusky plank
#

@covert moss you still need a z-wave transmitter to talk to z-wave devices via HA, either a stick or a z-wave gateway from a manufacturer... but you are in #the-water-cooler anyway, better ask in #hardware-archived

rare condor

Influxdb sucks, I don't like the numerous wontfix, stale and many other issues

Its due to the project support

My understanding of #hardware-archived is that it's exactly for these types of questions that Sendoushi had. To ask for advice and recommendations on hardware

dusky plank

whats the glory of influx anyway? is it that fast?

rare condor
#

I really don't know it seems to be defacto

esp for IoT

#

Also I would like context to understand the moderation changes in the lounge, I have contacted 4 members who regularly hung out here (mods) and they are gone (or otherwise silent on the matter), emojis are missing and the laissez faire nature of chat discussing every day activities, nerd culture and cool projects etc. is no longer present. Can anyone explain what actually happened specifically, behind the scenes?

deft pewter
#

Huh? I see plenty of chat about random crap in here.

#

It doesn't have to be exciting all the time

orchid rose
#

It's pretty much a free area. Maybe people just don't want to spam silly memes and emojis when others are having a decent discussion ๐Ÿ˜‰

deft pewter
#

Much like any other conversation. Don't interrupt when something else is already going on.

#

I loved seeing that guy's drone footage the other day and hearing about their backwards ass rules for take off and landing ๐Ÿ˜„

rare condor
#

We can debate whether or not they were used as spam, I firmly disagree but we all have opinions and that's fine. But several members did leave due to a disagreement and several mods are no longer active, I never understood what happened. These mods I chatted with for weeks, and loved HASS.

deft pewter

fathom sparrow
#

That's pretty much why it was removed. We don't want home assistant associated with those groups. Pepe unfortunately has a bad stigma about him.

#

And he wasn't specifically targeted. We just turned off emojis from other servers.

deft pewter
#

Not a bad move, tbh.

fathom sparrow
#

So, no big conspiracy theory.

rare condor

It makes sense in all fairness

deft pewter

Going back to your earlier point, I can't say I've noticed a change in tone here. Maybe some of the faces have changed but it's still pretty chill.

I'm dealing with that now in my house. I've automated a recirc pump/valve, and I have to monitor water usage and turn off the pump if I "detect" that I'm probably taking a shower. Otherwise, I'm periodically scalded as the pump kicks on

#

one of these days I'll renovate my master bath and install some modern plumbing fixtures

@hushed basalt One of the nicest upgrades I did recently was a instant water heater temp controller. They are great as you just set the temp and turn hot tap on full. Never touch cold tap, also great to press bath fill and walk away.

Auto fill bath would be nice

#

So would a bath

managing my hot water recirculator pump may use the most HA code (automations, scripts, Appdaemon) of any single function

Good afternoon Everyone, Hope that everyone is well. I am looking for recommendations on WIFI door / window open (i am assuming some sort of reed switch) that is compatible with home assistant. Unfortunately the area that i live in has started to get a lot of break ins so i would love to do some basic security stuff to the home we rent.

Hi @wise hazel
I just checked amazon, and I have to say, teyre all quite expensive.
Also wifi is quite power hungry. Zigbee got better power managment.
For around 25$ you can build your multi vendor zigbee bridge.
https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/getting_started/what_do_i_need.html
afterwards you can use the cheap xiaomi Door or Motion Sensors

up to 109 now

forest edge

yea I think they removed groups and a few other things that would impact alot of stuff within that jump as well

last dirge

oh great

#

I get to redo my stuff again?

forest edge

you don't upgrade often?

I upgrade once a full jump

the .# is for the birds lol

no

the last upgrade was 50 something versions

forest edge

lol

last dirge

I'm at 0.103.0

it obviously didn't impact me before either ๐Ÿ™‚

@light trout 1.3.0b0 is available ๐Ÿค”

Python script, netdaemon, appdaemon

forest edge

I click on the plus and nothing happens, is that a coming soon?

light trout
#

If you just added it it need to index it

forest edge
#

ah

lucid dock
#

so does HACS take a while to start

#

still says HACS is starting up

light trout
#

Yes and no, it is limited by how much you can hit the Github API, if you hit that it will just pause everything to the next reset (every hour)

#

The startup of the integration itself takes around 2s

lucid dock
#

hmm

#

would restarting HA help?

light trout
#

No

lucid dock
#

arg

#

so i gotta wait an hour?

light trout
#

Yup

night zodiac
#

Lude, does that show in logs when you hit limit?

light trout
#

That's how rate limits worls

night zodiac
#

just curious

light trout
#

If you enable debug logs it shows

lucid dock
#

weird i would be rate limited

#

never used the github api before ๐Ÿ˜„

light trout

With all the repositories in HACS you hit that during the initial setup

night zodiac
#

ignore me

light trout

Done

night zodiac

#

Lude, did you mean to use "repostitory" or is it meant to say 'repository"

Idk if you even commited that, I didn't check blame

light trout
#

Dont see the difference

night zodiac

okay

@last dirge really curious how things went going from 0.56 to 0.103. That's a huge jump. I would have just started over ๐Ÿคฃ
