Tired of running out of these, I said F---it and ordered the maximum quantity this eBay seller had - https://i.redd.it/1rysygg84ga51.jpg
@clear ferry life long supply of jumper cables or you becoming a reseller?
Reddit reposting

But I ordered twice that amount a while back
So I have in all genders now
Wish there is an easy way making your own jumper cables using some crimper tool.
There is
Then you can make custom lengths and all combinations
Why not buy that then? One time deal

lol

Great weather yesterday and today. Rode about 5 hrs in two days so far.
By jumper cables you mean breadboard/header jumper cables
Not car jumper cables right
If so you're looking for a Dupont crimper set
Something like this
The JST connectors you might not use often
But they're keyed which is useful so you don't unplug a cable and plug it back in the wrong way
That too
You'd probably use JSTs wherever you're doing semi-permanent devices
Like wiring up custom switch plates, connecting off the shelf modules together and putting them into semi-permanent installation in your home
But just search your local amazon or equivalent for a Dupont JST crimping set
I believe you can use the same die for both types of connectors
check the channel topics before asking, so you ask in the right place 😉
Ok
If you're about to ask anything about Home Assistant, this isn't the channel 😉
Ok, not sure where the best channel is to go, if I ask you can send me in the right direction if that's ok
Well, summarise and we'll direct you
#general-archived is a good fall through if you can't work it out from the channel names and topics though
I'm using g tasmota, do I need to use MQTT account
Tasmota would be #diy-archived or #integrations-archived
Or their own Discord server
Ready to use custom firmware for ESP8266 devices (including Sonoff)
Docs:
https://tasmota.github.io/docs/
Discord:
https://discord.gg/Ks2Kzd4
Thanks
Their docs explain how to connect it to HA 😉
👍
I don't have a connector problem! I can stop any time I want!
I have a stream deck that I don't really use for anything, lol.
I have a hakko soldering iron too but different model
Trying to find a smart display seems impossible for something that can do everything..
Pi+display here I go
Just got a Fire tablet yesterday, I'm going to give that a shot. Plus of course the HASwitchPlate when I finish soldering it up.
CyberPower will repair or replace a defective UPS system (including batteries) within three years of the purchase date. See warranty for details.
Does this mean that a CyberPower UPS is only good for like 4 years?
Batteries have a life span
3-5 years is what you expect buying a battery.
Sounds like they're saying that they only warranty the batteries for 3 years, which seems sane
Plus the batteries are replaceable so it's not like you have to throw out the entire UPS
I need to play around with apcupsd and see if I can get a connection to my UPS to the pi running hass
googles
hrmm, not sure if I am compatible
ahh, the factory software has a different model number than the amazon listing, neat.
I think I am supported assuming Back-UPS XS 1500 is similar enough to Back-UPS XS 1500M
ahhh, very cool. the plugin can act as a NUT client OR server
thanks @clever mortar
I love nut

I had never touched it before I bought my two ups'
But damn it is nice
Both on freebsd and Debian
Yeah, I started using it... well, "some time" ago and it worked really well back then
1820s, yes
okay, I ate some food. Let me see if I can get it going
okay, that was easy
is awesome
hell yeah, she's on the dash
I've just added the default sensors. I need to add some more.
maybe a cute gauge like you have, not sure
I don't focus too much on the UI, just for when I need to check something quickly
Otherwise stuff just happens
my glance card is probably good enough for me
I'm googling to see what people use to trigger shutdowns
I do shutdown of my freenas box if the power is gone for more than 3 minutes
The rest I don't care much for
yeah, I would just like to shut down my main PC incase I'm gone so the everything else stays alive for quite a while
after a certain amount of minutes as well
how easy is it to detect stunnel connections with dpi?
my company uses a strict proxy config, 443 and 80 everything else locked down (udp of course too)
what would you suggest?
Well... do you like being employed?
Because, if you get caught, that won't be a consideration any longer 😉
not really 😄
Yeah, but the trick is to either not get caught, or have enough dirt on those in power that it doesn't matter
Pragmatically, getting caught depends on the competence of those responsible for network security
you guys get stuff done?
I drink lots of coffee and have lots of chats... that counts?
Or have enough power over the managers three levels above you that your can tell them to get you a cup of coffee

https://github.com/karpach/remote-shutdown-pc this looks concise
i mainly need it to access soundcloud 😛 those bastards
I just always know what I am listening to
your work doesn't allow music?

Unlimited mobile data FTW
nah, soundcloud, yt, spotify all streaming services locked out
I am trying really hard to not ask what you do
Just ask, nobody tells the truth anyway 😛
software engineer in a company with solutions for banking
but text editors and music go so well together
productivity over 9000
PowerChute has been uninstalling for 15+ minutes
I remember doing this in the past and it went through all of a sudden
I can use HA and terminal addon etc without problem, isn't that using a websocket tunnel too?
addon, mi scusi
Maybe, depends on how that operates, and how you access it
As I said though, depends on how much attention your IT security folks pay...
If the answer is not much have at it 😉
well I can now reach both openvpn/tls and https on my home ip on port 443, ssl termination is done with stunnel and sslh sends the packets either to nginx or openvpn... so I think this is indistinguishable from each other
You guys have it security people?

To be fair, I have to do a cyber security training every year
That really is as advanced that if you fail it.... You shouldn't work in my company
plain openvpn is filtered, opevpn via https works
@dusky plank Used to use that along with corkscrew to get around stupid proxies at my uni. If they attempted to see what was on port 443 https, they got a web login for webmail 😄
corkscrew is just a handy way to get ssh through a socks proxy onto the ssh that was listening on port 443.
hmmmm I can use that too in my setup I believe
@clear ferry We still had a Vax lab, but by the time I was there, it was mostly PC 😄
Who am I kidding, the network in my school up to third year of vocational school was 10base2/5
The reason I got into Linux was that the IT deparment in the University were shit, but there was a student computer society (skynet.ie) that had decent Linux boxes!
Heh, the network in the student village I stayed in was 3Com 10Mb Hubs
i wonder how well dns2tcp works
Hi! I'm a rookie getting started with home automation and was going to start with lights. I was going to do some Smart Life switches over wifi and found some I like, but I CANNOT find any double-rocker smart switches (one gang that controls two different lights). Anyone know of any smart switch that does that other than this one?
@dusky plank Slow 😄
I had it setup once, and it worked. Was great for badly implemented Wifi networks who's DNS servers implemented their walled garden, but who still allowed you to hit random dns servers.
irc over a dns proxy XD
Back when I was still working in a hosting company, I came across a root kit with a really interesting C&C. It would do an lookup to a CNAME on XXXXXXX.whatever.com and get a CNAME response with a name in a similar style. Turned out that the XXXXX in the initial lookup was a compressed base64 encoding identifying the requesting machine. The response was also encoded with some basic instructions for the rootkit such as which IRC server to connect to.
It was actually really damn clever.
So I recently learned about XBee modules!
They are little ZigBee modules that run off 2.1-3.6V, so three rechargeable cells, and have a two mile unobstructed range
When they're transmitting, they only draw 40 mA, receiving 17 mA, and when in sleep mode, 2 uA!
They are a microcontroller on their own, and can be flashed to run its own code
I'm sticking one in a little LED umbrella, and it should be able to run off the solar power pack without any downtime 🙂
two of the pins on the XBee 3 even does PWM, so I might add a dimmer and transition functionality if I'm feeling fancy 😄
this is why I want zigbee lightbulbs instead of wifi ones
I hear that
I like having the switches on HA and using dumb LED bulbs personally
I don't really have any need for Hue bulbs, myself
My house is fitted with Lutron Caseta stuff almost everywhere and I love it
we have something like 55 devices on our network
I almost went lifix
my wifi AP supports 1k devices but zigbee would be more reliable with meshing
i feel like such a hack when writing python... i'm sure there's a better way to do this, but it works lol: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/7ZRrNbzggs/
i'm using this along with a cronjob that prints the stdout from this program (cloudflare IP ranges) to a file which is used with my NGINX config
802.11 is a great network, but I think it's overkill for a lot of devices with simpler use cases
I love 802.11 for everything.. but I need it to be lower power
aka the standard in wifi 6 I believe is good for iot
or is it 6e
ur 6e 😉
also... kind of a crappy reason to use different protocols, but lots of 802.11 devices really want to phone home
aka why my switches are bluetooth 😒
where did my messages go?
something happened with my messages and they were deleted?
discord thought you sent 6 messages in 2 seconds apparently lol
so it auto-deleted them
is there a bot for that on this server?
this is the only place I've seen that 🤔
what dumpster fires do you reside on? 🤔
speaking of reasons to keep your data out of the "cloud" 😄
NoT vlan is the way to go with a MDNS reflector
like no internet on a vlan?
block all messages to the outside world
ah yeah, absolutely
network of things
I block all traffic for stuff that shouldn't access the internet
hikvision cams for one 😄
xiaomi gateway 👀
Here's the battery pack I'm retrofitting
thankfully my AP supports 1k devices unlike most consumer gear that shit themselves once you pass 100
word
I hear that
I got a ubiquiti AP HD (high definition?) that I run into an iptables firewall
I just can't do anything else now
@scenic radish I'd recommend not mutating variables in your python script
I was considering nftables!
I recently did an iptables/nftables migration for work and I really liked it
ipv4 = get(url4).text.split('\n')
ipv6 = get(url6).text.split('\n')
ipv4.extend(ipv6)
You're taking ipv4 as an input and mutating it, bad practice
I would do something like
addresses = ipv4 + ipv6
But other than that for a 6 line python script I don't think it needs anything else.
You can learn about list comprehension maybe to construct the list directly but I wouldn't worry about it for this
Readability is king
you could also do some exception handling and what not in case there are network issues
or the server returns a 5xx or something
I can't remember if requests can do that
Interms of exponential backoffs
Also f strings are nice
print("set_real_ip_from " + ip + ";")
print(f"set_real_ip_from {ip};")
Although, it's probably a bad idea to use an external resource for your Nginx server
If something goes wrong, your Nginx server might stop working
@buoyant quiver not if you do it right
I don't even know what this script is for
nginx can be funky but I use it with docker containers
What if you were somehow given 127.0.0.1/8 as a network?
there are ways you can make it so nginx does not shit itself when a host is down
what if you get an HTML response?
could this text be used as some kind of injection for Nginx?
Just run bash scripts from http sources as sudo
Live life on the edge
On a nightly cron job too
Maximize your exposure window
what if there's a line that's something like 127.0.0.1/8; config to serve your private keys; ?
proxy_pass $upstream_proto://$upstream_app:$upstream_port;
if you set the variables first its ok
@hushed basalt thanks for the tips. Cloudflare lists their IP ranges and unfortunately they're text lists with line breaks instead of a JSON array or something: https://www.cloudflare.com/ips/
as for private keys... why on earth would you load them remotly
I'm using it with my NGINX config so that I see the actual originating IP address
or what about 127.0.0.1/8; content_by_lua_block { os.execute("rm -rf /"); }; ?
wanna find out? 😉
tl;dr: I would probably add some sanity checks for the data retrieved 🙂
sanitize all the things
@buoyant quiver good points, I'll just keep this for manual runs
I'll go crawl back in my hole now
😛

I'm (slowly) learning Python and basically using any excuse to write something new lol
Oh very cool!
It's a really neat language
Easy to work on HA when you have a little Python knowledge 🙂
Python is a beautiful language
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
I like that I can not do most of the work by just importing modules lol
they need to make the custom button card an official card
So more like “I like that others have done the work for me”
Pretty much modern programming in a nutshell
Is the word nutshell "nut shell" or "nut's hell"?
everything you know is based off something someone like me done when they were kids
I've been writing a lot more ruby these days
both are great languages
if you can import a gem or python lib, that's the way to do it
glue all the already-written stuff together
I need to learn js
Then ts
Although what i really need to learn is design patterns
js.. gross
Thinking js is gross is so 2005
weird how covid is mainly sticking around costal areas
Js is used extensively, so like it or not it's something every developer should know
I'll probably try and build a simple grocy replacement with node.js to learn it
weird how covid is mainly sticking around costal areas
@forest edge they must use js a lot
weird how covid is mainly sticking around costal areas
@forest edge I think it’s because most people prefer python these days.

@last plaza Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.
Thank you @scenic radish
yw
@scenic radish you are the best
😘
I don't get it
look a little above that picture
Yup. Just catching up.
That guy’s face look very plastered!
Interesting https://www.sparkfun.com/pages/xbee_guide
So many devices..!
"what's a zigbee?" lol

You can change # now?

the discord identifier?
Yes.
you've been able to for a long time
nitro
it returns to your OG # if you lose nitro status
I changed mine. wooo
getting wild
I was wrong. It gets randomized if you don't pay for nitro
i just bought nitro classic, so i can't change it
@last plaza @scenic radish @last plaza @scenic radish @last plaza @scenic radish
@buoyant quiver alright, how about this? made a bash script for manually updating it. prints the output to the console first before asking for confirmation to update the file: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XTVPPVktTn/
@night zodiac @night zodiac @night zodiac @night zodiac
marvels agents of shield is getting weirder and weirder lol
Do people still watch those?
@buoyant quiver alright, how about this? made a bash script for manually updating it. prints the output to the console first before asking for confirmation to update the file: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XTVPPVktTn/
@scenic radish you could have done the whole thing in python itself
i suck at python
No you don’t. You did so many things so far. That’s nothing.
If you could do in bash, you could do in python. It’s just syntax difference
true, i guess it's just a print() statement, input() statement, and python syntax for writing to a file
Yep
I'm getting more and more anxious as phnx types his message.
with open('foo.txt', 'w+') as file:
file.write('get bent')
lol, that must have been fun to type on mobile
Yeah...
I used to have a keyboard specifically for typing code
it was ugly as hell
android
I use swiftkey for communication and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.pocketworkstation.pckeyboard for ssh on mobile
That's kinda sweet
I don't ssh from android really anymore though
but that keyboard was super useful for shortcuts and such
control + c and thangs
@last plaza https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/3Vj9Fkyb58/
i have since removed the useless ips string
@night zodiac why swiftkey over gboard?
I have been using it since before gboard but it lets you customize the layout and sizing pretty well. I like to swipe type too.
it looks like gboard lets you swipe type one word at a time, that's neat
I like to make my keyboard smaller so it doesn't touch the edges of my screen, not sure if you can do that on gboard
you can
nice. I have just used it a long time since before there was a decent google keyboard. my muscle memory gets wonky when i factory a phone and I go back to swiftkey
oh, I am looking at the resize on gboard, it's a bit different
ahh, I was just reading a blog
@scenic radish python is 😍
I'm very much a novice but I like it

is there a way to get past the lovelace "initializing" loop on older ios 9 ipads?
I wonder how much work it would take to connect my Ember coffee mug
Does it have an API?
no, it usually just bluetooths to a phone app. I should be able to see what it is sending and such and recreate it. I have never dabbled with home assistant stuff before.
I know it has device tracking with bluetooth but not sure if it can connect to devices via BT with python or such
I tried to google to find something to see as an example but will have to look more tomorrow

Tedi has lost it
Uh oh, someone got nitro
no, we are just saying very cool things
Hello all~. Just joined.
Just read this cool article: https://blog.singularitynet.io/making-homes-really-smart-with-opencog-and-singularitynet-part-1-66e22a3a8407
Haven't had a chance to use HH, singularitynet, or opencog yet, but been doing a fair amount of reading and interested in giving this a shot.
Has anyone tried something like this out?
I kinda dig the new watchdogs
is there anything node red can do that home assistant simply cant? I just don't understand why people insist on using both
legit question
No clue
Well, Node-red might be better for multiple interactions with the same devices
Automations can be very overwhelming
I'm not using NR myself, but that's what i guess it is.
Writing procedural programming in yaml trigger/condition/actions does get quite tired
personally I love using yaml. maybe its just a personal preference thing. im not very visual so I don't like the 'nodes' and shit. i'd rather conceptualize the code
i always want to tell node red people if you can just get past the learning curve with yaml you'll never look back. but who knows. that was the case for me but everybody is different. curious what other people thought about it
It depends on how complex things can get. The multi-sequence and conditions kind of thing from node red feels like the "automate" android app which I love. It's one of the reasons why I went for ha, after getting frustrated with the Homey at my parents' place.
nodered has heaps HASS doesn't Siemens S7 Protocol, TCP IP Control, proper Modbus Integration, PLC extensions etc. basically lots of IoT and PLC stuff HASS doesn't have as its used in industry
Also I passed all my Exams 🥳
Thanks mate
Are you done for the near future
Oh man github is killing me
Now I know why none of these install scripts were working
I recommend git gud at JavaScript if you go nodered
You will have to write your own functions
School 🤢
I Literally can't do anything without github haha
I can draw some plantuml diagrams,
If I can remember the docker command to run the render server
sorry about that. please try refreshing
Gitgud @hushed basalt
github needs to gitgud so i can git
Can't even draw UMLs that don't look like 90s garbage 😢
it's a single command to mirror your pushes to github/gitlab/bitbucket all together. something to think about for the future at any rate.
Git is only one small part of the github dependency now
yes, sadly.
I could live with committing locally,
But none of my CICD works right now, I can't install anything because everything uses github somewhere,
an idea that was floated to me recently was mirroring all of the popular repositories on github, and then selling access to them when github goes down. seems evil, but profitable.

Nice got a good tax return this year
You could have had that money throughout the year instead
Are you in the US?
Assuming you are, if you adjust your withholding you can get close to $0 owed/refund on your tax return
You don't recall all the Aussie Slang I have used mate?
fair dinkum forgot me eh? yeah nah, its fine m8
Is this when we're supposed to call each other the C word?
Crazy?
Cantilevered
usually you preface it with sick or sh*it c**t depending on if your their mate or not
Not yet @rare condor but ts80p would be my choice
I've put the brakes on any discretionary spending until we get a mortgage approved
makes sense
Tell that to my wife who spent $400 on a second pram seat for a kid who doesn't even exist yet

"sales"
Ts80p has but better thermal transfer and controller apparently
So a lot more delivery per watt than the ts100
Plus the shorter tip is important too
The ts100 looked way too long
And USB c is nice
It's your hand to tip length that's important
Like try writing by holding a pen at the top end
Yeah true
Or if you've ever used to stupid compound pliers
So unweildly
Not going to go for that house,
Seller is dreaming
There's a new house asking $50k less than their asking in the same street
Smaller block but larger house, built 2019
Wait didn't you put a deposit down. Or did you just apply for morgage?
@scenic radish We have a system called PAYG Withholding where your employer determines how much Tax to withhold.
Ah, got it. No way to manually adjust?
Unless your a sole trader or business you don't decide this
No, it gets returned to you in tax return, you could ask your employer to better calculate this amount
Taxation Administration Act 1953 (TAA) covers this
I learnt about this about 5 minutes ago
as I clearly am a functioning adult
totally not learning important and basic facts about life and money for first time 😣
Yeah they don't teach financial literacy in school
But be damned if you don't know how to bullshit about "movie themes" in year 12 english you'll go nowhere
We put an offer on a house but I'm glad they're not taking it
It's got a shit kitchen and doesn't have a good layout that could be renovated
@rare condor i've gotcha. i have my withholding set up such that i owe a small amount of money when filing my tax return. that way i borrow that money interest-free from the IRS throughout the year instead of the other way around
the goal is to get as close to 0 as possible, but i'd rather be slightly on the "owe" side
@hushed basalt thats a pretty massive shift in perception on a half million dollar investment
It's got a shit kitchen and doesn't have a good layout that could be renovated
@hushed basalt i thought "shit kitchen" was some Aussie slang at first
thoughts on first date at 2am on Wednesday 🤔 internet people are sketchy
wut?
I'm using Tinder for first time, and I asked if the person I was chatting to wanting to meet up after lockdown. They suggested they come around at 2am the day after tomorrow instead
I know her on fb, def not murderer, or atleast mutual friend murderer then. 😛
heh, well yeah that's better then
Not really it means her schedule must be really busy, there is not much other reason to come that late.
Or they work shifts
I am going to decline anyway, I only have one bed and it will be hard to sort out logistics of setting up another bed.
Also meant to be in lock down, so its illegal
I know you can buy beds from ikea for like $50 but I can't be bothered
ugh Monday
@rare condor is tinder in Straya as much of a dumpster fire as it is in the US?
check out this weirdness
well, "was" rather

you can see the one to the right, they started off all that bright green color
then slowly turned purple
@scenic radish depends what your looking for, I find most of the women I meet just want to hook up rather than relationships. I have had met a few people that I still play Animal crossing with and chat about electronics, motorcycles etc.
In saying that I have had some success one person I met became really good friends and we travelled around Japan together
oh nice! yeah it's definitely primarily a hookup app
Its really not my scene tbh, but that's how my generation does dating these days. It frustrates me though as we will have a nice dinner date etc. and then they ask to hookup and don't want to take things further.
yeah that was always the worst
What I find even more off-putting is in most cases, a lot of people get really offending when you decline. But anyway enough about Tinder.
Should we have #geeks-ready-to-mingle channel? 🤣
The gender demographics of most Projects is <9:1
In my office we have 0, literally 0 women. AT my Uni in my course its 265males to 2 females.
But...but...but geeks don’t know how to mingle.
I really wish that changed, its pretty dispointing
If one is gay then those numbers sound great
We have plenty of female population in the workforce here.
ain't no party like a sausage party
Paradise for gay people
Sounds like a real banger
I really believe technology is so empowering and regardless of ambitions and passions should be universal
yeah but there's toxic d-bags that keep it a boys club
Genuine connection, is it because of biology, sexism, public perception? What is the most considerable cause of these numbers?
They are all considerable
I turned down a panel to dicuss gender inequality in IT. Its something I have thought about a lot but I really don't think I should be the one offering input, we have had enough guys speaking on behalf of women.
The opportunity will present itself again in January, I have a lot of time to think how I should construct that talk. Also it will be my first talk at an event! most likely virtual at this point
Been involved in similar things... my comment was that:
- It's really daft that I'm speaking about it
- It's really sad that it's not a female talking about it
- My role here isn't to do anything more than provide mentorship and support so that the problem can be addressed
Your a decent person.
Well, I've struggled with getting involved in these things myself, because, well, I'm part of the problem demographic
I was in a session where it was asked to the group if people were willing to say why there weren't more involved, and I explained that as part of the problem it felt inauthentic to get involved
I had some really non-judgemental feedback about how it needs "us" to get involved to fix it
So, I try
Of course, it probably helps that I've always treated folks as individuals. I don't really care about race, religion, gender, etc. All I care about is what kind of person you are, and whether you're able to do the job...
It's a similar problem to "color blindness". It's really easy to be color blind when you aren't affected by race
I really have to be careful about what I say, but I really really despise the fact that we go to strip clubs, its really common in this industry. I mean how the f*ck are we supposed to have a respectful workplace given that culture
Yeah I would not work at a place like that
@lunar sundial i have 2.4 G set to medium transmit power and 20MHz width, 5G is set to high transmit power, 40MHz width, and i'm using one of the DFS channels since none of my neighbors' equipment supports it
i only crank it up like 5dbm, nothing too crazy
2GHz is at 15 dBm, 5GHz is at 23 dBm
not as much interference on 2.4 as i'd expect given my 11 neighbors in the same building. then again, concrete between floors, the party wall is concrete, and the common area interior walls are brick veneer
Has anyone pushed illegal power output exceeding FCC regs?
drown out all your neighbors with 2.4 GHz @ 100 dBm
It's not hard to exceed regulation power limits
It's a bit overkill, even for my plex-setup.
lol its always overkill unless it is a server pc
It's my server, I have a ordinary 3700X as my workstation at home.
There is a secret code for my Solar inverter that ignores voltage limits and pushes voltage higher than max to ensure generation is always max, byproduct is grid voltage becomes less and less stable. But it ensures I always get max revenue.
konami code?
ROG Strix X570-F, 32GB, 2080TI, 960 M2 🙂
NO IMPI, NO ECC, NO Server Features
@rare condor thats correct, thats my workstation. 🙂
Asrock Rack X470?
@rare condor
dude def not
so... i really want to add an ESP relay or something that i could wire in to my condo buzzer so i can remotely buzz people in. anyone have any suggestions with that? i have a multimeter so i could check out the wiring in my buzzer
x570 or b550
I thought we were dicussing servers
But yeah, I was cheap and did't go for ECC for my server either.
@hollow sky Its the only Server MB available for Ryzen except the MITX variant
hmm
@scenic radish it's not done via phone?
i didnt know that
@scenic radish you don't need anything other than a relay to short the button contacts. It doesn't really matter what the voltage is/isn't
nah, it's a physical buzzer with momentary buttons
it's just a contact closure?
d1 mini with a relay shield
Or you could get one of those button pressers
the button has a lot of travel, and i'd like to keep the hardware hidden
@hollow sky what do you use for server then?
@hollow sky what do you use for server then?
hmm rn prob b550 due to the vrms and the pci gen4
but seriously, D1 mini and a relay shield
What would you setup IoT wise for someone who needs the setup to work for the next 5 years with zero maintenance, i.e. I install it and disappear
My ESP8266-devices has worked flawless several years.
Any non-cloud based should be pretty solid. I have had some occasional reconnect issues with nodemcu's on some firmwares, but even those work most of the time
That could be fixed if I disabled the AP mode on them when they can't find the wifi
My worst decision was hard coding IP addresses and then deleting the source code
My garage door will always be 192.168.1.200
meh I was 15 at the time
I should have known better
but it works and like I don't want to touch it
At that time I used global variables for everything
I completely missed that ref
Was out on an island, took some pictures for you @clever mortar @last plaza Sommarøy https://imgur.com/gallery/hWGXhAT
Why are you outside?!?!? 😮
Summer island is the Norwegian name of the island
Nice didn't know they had 30c Islands in Norway
We do, but not that far up
you're Norwegian too @light trout ?
*Winter Island
Don't tell anyone @last dirge 😱🙈
Why are there are so many Norweigans using HASS?
Who said I was using that? 🤔
😅
surely you run it to test it, or do you just write perfect code everytime 😛
I wish 🤣
So many? What is there like 3?
Beautiful pictures, @clear ferry
Three if you count the dog, yes
lol. You saw the dog too? I thought imgur randomly shows pictures.
such a good show
Norwegian never-nudes?
anyone in the US have a recommendation for a good entry-level dehydrator? i want to make my own beef jerky
sounds like a real jerk
He just needs a bigger trebuchet to be able to deliver them
looks up cost of sending a single piece of jerky by mail
Surely that depends on the size 🤔
if put in an envelope and it's a three ounce piece of jerky it'd probably be $1.50 (three stamps)
Cost of a stamp
He is few minutes out from me.
80KG of jerky...
I'll send you some @scenic radish it'll reach you by 2022
Surely that depends on the size 🤔
I WAS GETTING TO THAT TINKERER
my fiancee says the same thing 😦
@scenic radish this is what we use at home. Highly recommend. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008OV4FD0

entry level
They go on sale all the time. I got it for $190.
but i suppose the payback period would be fairly short since jerky is expensive
Eat more jerky then
Entry level? Just suck the moisture out with a straw
i hate you all
@scenic radish i just use my smoker personally, no dehydrator here
damn
Back in the days, people used natural sun light to dry things. In our area, we will have 2 months of good sun in a year.
Salt... lots and lots of salt
Yup
i suppose i could use nature's dehydrator ™️
bamboo straw?
Lawless jerky is some of the best jerky I've eaten
night all! Any American's I wish you good luck, stay indoors!
ugh

It shows $290+ online, but it goes on sale all the time. I’ve seen it go almost $175 once.
oooooo
maybe i'll get a cheap one first to see if the jerky i make is a good replacement for the store-bought stuff
@dull chasm 's gonna blow a gasket when he sees this
🤣
I was just thinking we should have a #gif_wars channel where you're only allowed to communicate with gifs
Wait, is it a new thing that discord hides tenor links? I just noticed that
(at least mostly)
i also noticed that
it's about damn time
this free software wasn't meeting all of my most stringent requirements
Time to reeeeee
I was going to say there isn't an English word for it, but I guess betrothed is our equivalent. Doesn't sound fancy enough though
and it makes you sound about 233 years old
Sounds like you are from a very southern state atleast
I hide all the tenor links. Usually the link says what it is. I don’t expand links. Looks crazy on mobile if I expand.
It looks like some of them don't hide until you go to a different channel and come back
The default is expanded view.
we're talking about the link not appearing above the GIF skala
Ah!
We don't hide gifs because we are intellectuals 🧐

#330990055533576204 fighting overheating of systems with too many add-ons on a 20 year old laptop
lmao
Somebody once posted a picture of a case that had been "ventilated" with a shotgun. Oddly the PC didn't work any more

@clever mortar did you say @dull chasm ?
Not yet

is that the engineer?

Can someone guide me to support section for NabuCasa ? I am little confused in Discord.....🤔
Thanks

showers
hi all! I want to monitor home-assistant with check_mk . What is a good place/channel to ask some info?
@unreal orbit that’s the English of 21st century.
@clear ferry I plugged in the dick lamp you sent me, looks like it's a sidewinder
..
-bash: ..: command not found
Finally got my house wired with CAT6 on the weekend. Been 10+ years since I've done any network cabling, but decided to do the plugs myself to save some money. Was pretty surprised/impressed that I got them all right on the first try! Got a much cleaner mini network cabinet now, and access everywhere I need it.
Only problem is that something seems to keep sending WOL packets to my laptop >_<
That's me
Any idea how i'd find what's sending the WOL packets?
Wireshark?
How do you know it's WOL?
Only magic packet is enabled for the adapter ?
There MUST be an easier way to dig holes in the backyard
I just mean how does he know it's not something other than WOL
Does the hole digging have something to do with WOL or am I out in left field again, cause an auger
Hole digging is something else.
Gotta dig 15" dia 24" hole. What do I get myself into 🙄
Rent an auger
Too lazy to head to HD. 😆
Going to put this on hold will get someone from HD tomorrow.
Can't wait to burry this sucker.
oversized anal bead i think
he said burry so that's why i guessed that
maybe i should read the above convo before making guesses
Probably speakers
Why pay HD people, just rent the auger. Done in like 30 minutes. Plus another 30 minutes of chest beating. 1 hour tops.
@scenic radish: Because my laptop didn't wake from sleep when on Wifi, but wakes from sleep now that it's on ethernet. Only change is the connection type, so would assume magic packet/WOL.
Ah yeah, that's pretty damning, isn't it
@forest edge , your apparent knowledge of anal beads is.......let’s say.......concerning?
What is it
@hushed basalt underground sub
Sub?
Subwoofer
oversized anal bead i think
@forest edge you do have a vivid imagination for farm country. 🤣
@forest edge is that what you resort to when lonely ? 😆
@green inlet you give me too much credit. BTW same or less to get someone from HD.
Can someone please explain the JEDI and PADAWAN ranks to me?
@scenic radish
The Jedi role (blue) is given to our community members who have proven themselves knowledgable and worthy of helping others. Please do not request to be assigned this role. It must be earned.
The Padawan role (purple) is given to our community members who have shown that they are willing to learn, have shown progress toward becoming a bigger part of our community (a.k.a. a Jedi), and try to lend a helping hand to others when they can. Please do not request to be assigned this role. It must be earned.
@scenic radish send some pictures of the thingee
You setting up an outdoor cinema @tidal bronze? Or is it some kind of burrowing pest deterrent?
Assume you host lots of BBQs. Very cool!
I would love to get a bass shaker in my couch. Have heard it's one of the best home theatre investments.
I spend a lot of time in the backyard actually most of my time at home.
They are good but adding 2 or 3 subs around the room is much better.
Bass is not omnidirectional
2 or 3 subs 🤣. I had one sub in my old setup and my wife was like, “it’s too loud”
Yes, subs were the best addition for movies. She didn’t like it.
@scenic radish send some pictures of the thingee
@tidal bronze then i come back to seeing this. anal bead guess was a proper guess lol
At higher volume bass envelope is pretty good they hardest thing is to get the thump in the right direction at low gains. This is is why I use 4.
Outdoor base is a nightmare compared to indoor
Basically you have to sit and move the sub to different positions to find the ideal place for all outdoor listening positions.
95 south had a killer bass song. I can’t find it
Just put it in the corner of the earth, E Z P Z
Get subwoofer chairs
Lol
Neighbours must love outdoor subs
Has anyone ever done, or seen any good talks on homeassistant
40 minute range
Neighbours must love outdoor subs
@hushed basalt you mean earth worms?
@hushed basalt I could probably make something for ya. Maybe put a nip slip in there too
wooo, drone comin tomorrow
have u guys tried to make your own sex toys with small esp32 boards
aint gonna let foreign botnets ruin my wifes pleasure lol\
full LAN control
LAN only, no pleasure outside home
teledildonics
I'm not a security guy, but I thought you guys might know, when ssh passwd security is disabled (key auth only) how does one add a new key (for another machine to get remote access) to the server, do you re-enable ssh passwd auth temporality or physically copy the key. Not sure what's best practice.
@rare condor did you get your cbus cat5 cable from work
It seems to be hard to find some without buying a 305m box
I'm not sure if it's easier for me to try and find a meter with zigbee or wifi for those reasons alone
@hushed basalt What is your goal, did you want to measure subcircuits?
Also hit me up with that ssh question
How is the server set up. Who set it up.
For my mum, probably not. For my house eventually, perhaps
Aircon , HWS and pool would be the only things I'd care about measuring indepedently
I set it up, I disabled passwd login to make it more secure but now I want to login from my laptop
So potentially 4 meters
You don't have to use CBUS cable
Did you put an authorized key on there first
sorry I will come back to ssh question lol too confusing on both subjects
LWS sell CBUS by the meter, call the branch and check with the wholesaler as it may vary from branch to branch
but you can just use normal cat5e and put it into heatshrink
I have about 900m of cat5/6 so that may be easier
That covers the segregation requirements of AS3000
Even if they use CBUS cable, they will likely use heatshrink at termination for compliance. See here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/HcvNqdeFFzFNP8cS7
notice how the cable entering the smart meter has heatshrink on it
RS485 using CBUS cable
It would be nice if the rs485 was terminated with an rj45 socket
basically if you use cat5e you need to do that all the way to the smart meter
I believe cbus says that's a good way for compliance
Is split automotive conduit suitable instead
Or unsplit.
I'm not sure if 800mm of heatshrink might get unweildy
Yes trucking and ducting is suitable, it should have suitable AS/NZ standards compliance, there is a IEC based spec for that
Basically you need some way segregate it.
Its extremely common in PLC world to use loom to cover ELV cables to termination
Once its out of switchboard it requires 50mm separation from LV wiring
If this is not feasible you can use Conduit, joists or double insulation to isolate the wiring from LV wiring
What is LWS, I can't find them on google
Appologies LH
Electrical Wholesaler complete range of electrical supplies including lighting, data, safety & more. Buy Clipsal, Olex, Hager, Robus, NHP, Fluke and more
Ah yep that makes a lot more sense ;)
Man wholesalers are the biggest jerks if you're not an electrician
Btw ACMA's spec 009 covers ELV wiring, AS3000 only covers segregation to a limited extent
They often will and have refused to sell to me before
They will also charge you a significant premium
Were you trying to buy LV gear
Anyways we can come back to me another time
Is the ssh your own server?
Sorry just had plumber arrive
I was trying to buy a Hager MCB
Had to get sparky on site quote his licence number before they would let me get the gear.
This was for work though
@hushed basalt My opinion has somewhat changed on the best way to monitor sub circuits, if its just 1-2 use SMD230 or Pulse Counter DIN meter, otherwise IOTAWatt, is cheaper and doesn't use additional DIN slots. If you have limited modules left in your switchboard get an IOTAWatt instead.
How do you use an iotawatt legally
This was installed by a sparky:
Yeah overeasy is the creator of the IOTAWatt
I think his response addresses my concerns quite well.
That individual circuit power monitoring? Wonder if my Fronius Smart Meter will do that. They mentioned something like that.
Just getting aggregates at the moment.
Do you think CT clamps are considerably less accurate than s submeter
@thick dragon You absolutely can you just need additional smart meters, i.e. one for each circuit or a pulse meter but that requires new wiring to the inverter
@hushed basalt They are less accurate mildly but there has been considerable testing dealing with phase shift of the reference voltage and ensuring the IOTAwatt is accurate
Yeah, right. So currently just wired for the total draw/generation to grid - not split by circuit.
High accuracy isn't too important though I guess
@hushed basalt CT Clamps are standard tool for measuring pump and mining equipment power and current usage
That's honestly enough for me I think, considering i have smart sockets on a bunch of higher-draw stuff 🙂
Does the iotawatt work with a pulse counter too
@thick dragon Yeah likewise my highest usage appliances have zigbee power meters on them
I think it'd be useful to measure directly what the meter is reading as well
What zigbee power meter do you use
@hushed basalt No, it just measures the CT Clamps, its an ESP so you could hack it to record pulses but it would ruin compliance and you could just use another ESP for that
I use Xiaomi ones
My new UPS has power metering inbuilt. I haven't set it up yet though. Waiting for my dupont crimper so I can replace the fans
$19 from Aliexpress
Wayy too noisey since it's indoors
Fair.
Did you have to change the calibration when not using it with xiaomis hub
@rare condor I read somewhere that installing GPOs in switchboards was not legal in Australia.
@young sigil Nope: https://www.sparkydirect.com.au/p/4297219/hager---10amp-din-mounted-gpo-double-pole.html
Hax have you seen the new tuya stuff in bunnings
where issues may arise is wiring running out of a switchboard or the IP rating of the switchboard
They have inline switches, wall switches, gpo mounts like used for ceiling fans and lights etc
@hushed basalt yep I have heaps of the Grid Connect stuff
Be careful a lot of it runs the new tuya fw which can't be converted with TUYA-Convert
Shame you have to tuyaconvert it. That's the upside of zigbee no flashing
I thought they fixed that
Unless tuya has made their move again
Cat and mouse it was fixed before but latest fw patches the previous vun.
Also fuck Bunnings. Worst service ever.
Also Tuya has moved to non ESP, Realtek chips for a lot of new gear.
If you guys aren't already, you should join this group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/smarthomeoz (provided you use Farcebook).
Just make sure you check blakadder's repo to ensure its supported first
otherwise 50/50 chance of it working
Even most of their newer ESP stuff uses TuyaMCU, which requires a lot more dicking around to get working.
I can add a zigbee device to homeassistant in 60 seconds from unboxing to showing up in my states
I'm over companies locking us out, using our metrics and making our products die on their whim
Yeah but half the Zigbee stuff is hit or miss, all the aqara/xiaomi stuff works great, but I have had issues with both hue and ikea stuff
I'm a bit over my google homes for example
Haven't had issues with my hue stuff, what's going on haxxa?
Obvious privacy concerns, locked down, poor feature design, must be on same subnet as HA,
I'm over my Nest
What coordinator are you using hax
Google home works with HA across subnets if you enable mDNS reflection
Been working fine for me
Yeah but then I have to enable host networking on my ha container
Which I'm not doing
I'm going to probablt use a remote homeassistant instance with host networking
@scenic radish This was never fixed, even in herman with zigbee2mqtt, unpairs every 4 weeks or so and lags: https://github.com/Koenkk/zigbee2mqtt/issues/531
And use that to discover and control the google homes
Boo telco, boo. I boo at you.
Z2M
I might put homeassistant on my zigbee2mqtt raspberrypi
Oh that's super annoying haxxa
Just for host networking discovery
Works fine with my hub
Bought a completely different USB module
the newer better range TI chip
same issue, all xiaomi stuff 👍
ikea, phillips and osram 👎
Like it works but it lags
takes 2-3 seconds
Hub works well
Oh your not using Z2M?
Yeah, I'm also just using the actual Hue integration and Hue hub.
I use ZHA for other stuff
its 100% Z2M issue not hue issue
My only non-hue Zigbee device is my lock, which is paired to a CC2531.
