@dull chasm got a question. Thoughts on syncing volume across multiple media players ? As in set different levels on certain players ,maintain the different levels while a master adjusts overall +/-

#

Example would be locking channel gains on a mixer to master gain proportionally

rain swift
#

sounds good, no idea how you'd do it.

tidal bronze
#

Lol.

#

Chromcast audio groups does it very well.

rain swift
#

will that work on all of your media players?

tidal bronze
#

Unfortunately no. That's what I am trying to accomplish.

rain swift
#

my point stands lol.

dull chasm
#

@tidal bronze I have been doing between yam and onk with music cast ...ha sets vol on onk while yam is master .... i want to expand beyond the two i have now

#

still have local control and but with adjust loses relative volume (balanced) between the two

tidal bronze
#

Yep. I am trying to keep the set gains across CC audio group and 3 zones.

dull chasm
#

i got one cc and one zone with master does well

#

but i did find that either the speaker or cc gain is not linear

tidal bronze
dull chasm
#

i was doing it that way ...then i went with yam setting gains of other amps/inputs

tidal bronze
#

But how do you maintain set gains while you change master ?

dull chasm
#

but ha's funky 0 to 1 gain is a bitch to go to db

#

automation based on relitive attentuntion of yam

tidal bronze
#

Got it. But I my case I need a arbitrary master since even AVR zones would be following the master

dull chasm
#

hmm so cc does not follow gain set by yam

rain swift
#

the yam

tidal bronze
#

Can't follow that. Once I set levels on each zone and CC that needs follow the make believe master.

dull chasm
#

what would arbitary master be in relative to master

tidal bronze
#

Basically 7 media players following the arbitrary master.

dull chasm
#

@rain swift yam equals yamaha ....duh

tidal bronze
#

But they can't follow each other

rain swift
#

I figured so, but I do like a good yam

dull chasm
#

so each of there gains a set by location ....and then a fake master to rule them all

tidal bronze
#

Yes sir.

dull chasm

#

let me think ... i am not sure if a input slider could fake it

rain swift

While you are at it, it would be awesome if, while master is in control any change in individual gains will pull back to set gains at start up. Yep you can divorce now.

I give in an apartment that has an unusual design where it's impossible to hear anyone knocking on the door. This is exacerbated as it has 4 rooms built into the "saw-tooth" of the roof on one of the levels (it's an old warehouse conversion). Even when I've tried wireless doorbells, you struggle between maintaining the signal between the outside button and the receiving station with the bell and being able to hear the bell.
Everytime I get close to choosing a solution that provides a smarter solution/video/ability to be aware of someone at the door from anywhere in the apartment, they need the cloud/subscription/go btoke. I'm looking for better integration into Home Assistant, good camera, able to be powered via POE etc, no subscriptions, quality device etc. Just came across this video https://youtu.be/GbkCuT4qHbA
It shows a device with promise - I'd only be interested in the outdoor segment as my network can deliver POE. Video could be to other screens or phones (could record video as a by-product). The integration into HA and MQTT also gives an opportunity to make announcements over Echo/Alexa devices or via light flashing routines etc. I'll be interested to see further developments before making the plunge
BTW no connection with product/content provider - just thought it was interesting/promising
I'd also be interested if any one else had other options worth investigating.

If you are like me you've been looking for a video Doorbell that has a decent video quality, decently built, has a hardwired Ethernet connection, can be powered by POE and with that hooks into your NVR of choice and is also native Home Assistant compatible! Well, finally, sear...

turbid stirrup
#

I can imagine

fiery sorrel
#

oh i need to get that quizz a colegue sended me about aws

last dirge
#

this place hired some 3rd party to do their administration

mild tapir
#

YOU CANNOT
AND I SAY
CANNOT
JUST COPY YOUR FUCKING INFRA OVER TO AWS
AND EXPECT IT TO BE CHEAPER, FASTER, AND BETTER

last dirge
#

so of course the 3rd party decided to use AWS "best practices" that just so happened to increase the monthly cost

#

of which they took a percentage as their "fee"

fiery sorrel
mild tapir
#

there it issssss

turbid stirrup
#

Oh, and you cannot just copy a linux based on premises solution over to AWS and expect it to work.

fiery sorrel
#

this make my head hurt

mild tapir
#

Even the devs at AWS would fail that

turbid stirrup
#

ipsec worked well enought

last dirge

so I entered a helpdesk ticket with the 3rd party that essentially asked them to unknowingly grant me full IAM access

ancient anchor
#

see right now i'm not sure if you're talking about linux isos or linux isos

hushed basalt
#

Cost me $30 to get the fans haha

ancient anchor
#

because i'm pretty sure i have both on my iodd πŸ˜›

hushed basalt
#

What's an iodd

rare condor
#

Nice, I paid $40 per 40mm PWM fan

#

they are so pricy

hushed basalt
#

I got a set of 3 for.. lemme check

mild tapir
#

An iODD is a device that you can stick ISOs and VHDs on and click to mount

#

And it's like... Greatest shit ever

ancient anchor
#

use mine probably 3x a week

#

fantastic buy

3x Arctic Cooling F8 Low Noise Case Fan 80mm Quiet Silent 3-pin Case Fan
Total: AU $32.90

mild tapir
#

Worth every damn penny

hushed basalt
#

Ah so you can emulate a DVD for booting?

rare condor
#

When I say Linux ISOs I mean Big Fedora 7 & Backyard Ubuntu 9

mild tapir
#

Yes

hushed basalt
#

Seems handy

pallid nest
#

Has anyone gotten a Waveshare e-paper display to work with an ESP-32S NodeMCU?

mild tapir
#

And you can mount Multiple VHDs and 1 ISO at a time

rare condor
#

Is that implied?

pallid nest
#

Trying it through ESPHome and not having any luck.

mild tapir
#

It's pretty cool tbh. It uses a port multiplier and SATA to USB 3.0 chip to make some magic happen.

hushed basalt
#

Very Tempting

#

I think I'll get it

#

AU Stock yay

rare condor
#

How much>

#

I want to try one

mild tapir
#

Right now I have 481 ISOs and 51 VHDs on mine

rare condor
#

My weller is nice but 110v so not very portable with tranny

hushed basalt
#

Plus this is mandatory

rich kettle
#

man i need one of those

MG Chemicals 8341 10ml Flux Paste In Syringe Dispenser MG8341-10ML [DG]
$28.95

Wow what a rip

#

They're $15ex GST on element14

mild tapir
#

USB C soldering iron? Yus

hushed basalt
#

PD 2 for 30w

mild tapir
#

Damn they even added PD communication to it?

#

Solid.

hushed basalt
#

Hmm @rare condor that kit doesn't include the powersupply

#

There's one on backorder that includes the power supply and the cable and grounding clip

#

Probably worth waiting for that one

rare condor
#

Is it USB C fast charge in which case I could just use all the 65w dell usb c chargers I have, bought them cheap from ali

hushed basalt
#

I'm not sure

#

PD 2.0 whatever that means

rich kettle
#

dell uses usb-c pd

#

you should be fine

hushed basalt
#

Which version though

#

Man usb-c is a mess.

mild tapir
#

Isn't PD2 backwards compatible?

hushed basalt
#

QC 2, QC 3, PD1, PD2, PD3, usb2, usb3, usb3.1,

mild tapir
#

USB 4.0 is going to alleviate lots of that pain.

#

USB 3 GEN1 / GEN2

#

heh

hushed basalt
#

Plus TB3

#

TB3 x2, TB3x4

mild tapir
#

USB4 is supposed to be TB3 compatible

hushed basalt
#

This is not the holy cable/connector to rule them all I was promised

rare condor
#

I think the IRON is PD

mild tapir
#

Just wait until they get the communication protocol finished up. Then we should be.

hushed basalt
#

The iron is PD2.0

#

or QC3.0 for 18w

rare condor
#

only uses 18w?

#

huh

hushed basalt
#

The TS80 uses QC3.0 for 18w

#

So that's USB-A to USB-C from a QC3 power supply

#

The TS80P uses that as well as PD2.0 for 30w

#

So that's a PD2 usb-c charger.

rich kettle
#

pd2/pd3 don't make a difference

#

for powering a soldering iron

#

"Sources say that it's best to use USB PD 2.0 for simple devices that don't necessarily need extra or in depth information presented. One should use USB PD 3.0 if the new features are required in your device's application. "

#

aka why your ts80 uses pd2 and not 3

hushed basalt
#

Will a PD3.0 supply provide =>30w to a PD2 device?

rich kettle
#

yes

#

the power is the same between pd2 and pd3

hushed basalt
#

I assume the 65w Dell USB-C chargers are PD3

#

So that should work Haxxa

rich kettle
#

the docks are, at least

hushed basalt
#

Back in my day all usb was 12mbps and 5v 500ma

#

It was horrible and we liked it

mild tapir
#

Firewire

rare condor
#

lol we were forced to use firewire in our school labs

hushed basalt
#

Oofph firewire was a hot mess

#

Destroyed devices left right and centre

#

Plus a great way to hack a macbook

rare condor
#

oh and 3.5" flopys never mixed with school children well

mild tapir
#

It allowed for the daisy chain

#

In a way it was ahead of its time

#

It should have stayed in the time It was designed for it though

#

Which was the future

rare condor
#

I didn't like the shape

hushed basalt
#

Daisy chaining is a PITA in practice

#

Star topology ftw

mild tapir
#

Honestly just makes things easier in the long run

hushed basalt
#

Which shape, there were 3 sizes for firewire haha

mild tapir
#

All of them lol

hushed basalt
#

Worst thing about macs is their exclusive use of thunderbolt to do anything

mild tapir
#

Not anymore thanks to Intel

#

Thunderbolt is being built into some processors

hushed basalt
#

Trying to build a professional editing workstation with TB2 was a PITA

mild tapir
#

An Intel is releasing the patent for free for USB 4.0

rare condor
#

Thunderbolt is really only useful for Docks

mild tapir
#

It's amazing for external gpus

hushed basalt
#

Give me some internal pci-e slots and some onboard SAS.

mild tapir
#

Which has more use than just games

rare condor
#

eGPU is hit/miss

hushed basalt
#

Without buying a Mac Pro Rack for $20k which didn't exist a year ago

rare condor
#

I did it with my Intel Nuc

#

always had issues

mild tapir
#

You can actually run an external GPU on a ThinkPad x230

hushed basalt
#

Thunderbolt was hit and miss for pci-e in general

mild tapir
#

Thunderbolt is also providing security issues

hushed basalt
#

Plus expensive, and more cables and powersupplies and failure domains and bottle necks

rare condor
#

usb-c is hit/miss in general

mild tapir
#

Don't blame the connector

hushed basalt
#

For workstations pci-e just works

#

But mac gave the middle finger to professionals a long time ago

#

Lots of people in the creatives industry moved to Windows for reasons like that

#

Plus their thermal throttling that cripples your expensive processor

mild tapir
#

With adobe actively working on a Photoshop and creative cloud solution for Linux in addition to AutoCAD be imported to a web platform, they can all go to hell

hushed basalt
#

Anything but GIMP

#

Photoshop is the only viable alternative.

rare condor
#

😦 I like GIMP

hushed basalt
#

🀒

#

I would pay to not use GIMP

rare condor
#

I was the only kid in Visual Design Class using it

mild tapir
#

And that's why adobe is working on a Linux version

#

They finally saw the dollar signs

rare condor
#

They had 25 years to do that

hushed basalt
#

I don't have faith in Adobe to pull anything off though

#

They can't even get creative cloud stable

mild tapir
#

Who knows? Maybe if they have a pure Linux platform to work off of they can actually pull it off

#

This is another chance for them to roll the dice.

hushed basalt
#

I don't know many creatives using linux

mild tapir
#

Yet

hushed basalt
#

It's 2/3 Mac 1/3 Windows

#

And they're not the 'linux' type

mild tapir
#

It is slowly becoming a viable alternative to even the most basic of users.

#

A distribution worth noting is elementary OS

trail crag
#

my daughter was using elementary OS 5 years ago when she was 9

hushed basalt
#

Where did you find about creative cloud on linux

mild tapir
#

At a Linux convention in Austin Texas. This is a couple years ago. Adobo had two Representatives out there

hushed basalt
#

Hmm

#

I can't find anything online

#

Might be vaporware

mild tapir
#

Yeah sure does tell you a lot when it's been a couple years

#

They have been spontaneous at times though.

hushed basalt
#

If Adobe had server agents for rendering that would be awesome

#

They have basically zero cluster ability

#

Or even any real headless ability

mild tapir
#

That's what creative cloud should be

#

Especially if you're going to add cloud to the name

hushed basalt
#

I'm not sure Id want to edit over the internet TBH

mild tapir
#

AutoCAD is doing that now.

#

And it's really not that bad

hushed basalt
#

It's like a VOIP call with 200ms of delay, it just ruins your brain feedback loops

#

Production editing can not fuck around with any impediments

#

Anyways time to study Design Patterns, have a job interview on Friday

last dirge

what's your favorite?

I've never made maki rolls but I do make pretty good breaded chicken from scratch

the hardest part is the rice

scenic radish

That's what I've heard

last dirge

and I've got a japanese rice cooker with a "sushi" setting

so..

I just did that, let it cool, then added the mirin and sugar

scenic radish

That's cool
