Get the fuck out of my face

hushed basalt

C levels look the same as us when they're in their underwear

#

I hate C level/partner worshippers

#

Like they think they're literally gods or something

mild tapir
#

heh

#

I was in front of the BoD when getting hired on and I told them this:

"You are hiring me because you think I am more capable of doing the job than you are. You are paying for my experience. I expect you to listen to me."

#

Its business. Dont expect me to not be to the point about it.

#

Im here to get shit done and do my job.

#

Not pander to your feelings and power complex

#

One of the VPs laughed and I knew I was in the right place

#

In the end, C-Levels/VPs/Partners/Execs are useless without those under them

#

If everyone decided to give a ๐Ÿ–•, they are suddenly worthless

#

I will happily knock someone off the high horse they rode in on and remind them they stand on the same ground we all do.

#

Man.... Amazon turned me into an angry cynical person heh

Our politicians need to be reminded they're public servants sometimes, haha.

UniFi dosen't care unless they get mass complaint reports

MikroTik is honestly really decent

most companies don't evven look at that stuff

If I would want to run a for loop with snmpget and I was interested in storing both the IP of the host I'm polling and the last three characters of the output to a file for every for so for example for ip in 192.168.1.{32..99} do 'snmpget -v2c -c private $ip iso.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.3.629' and I would like to store the last three chars of the OID, I figured grep -o '...$' will store the three chars I want there, but how would I store the complete IP of each for together with the three characters? and append those to a file at the same time ? ๐Ÿค”

or actually, I can just store the whole command, that way I know which OID I'm storing it for, because I'm going to poll two different ones

last dirge

@clear ferry do nested groupings work in regex?

#

looks like this would work

#

\$ip (.*(...))$

#

$1 would give you the whole IP, $2 would give you just the last 3

clear ferry
#

Since this is for 320 nodes I've fallen back to place it on a shared storage volume, and output the commands to local files instead, now I just need to find a way to make this ipmitool lan print | grep "IP Address" | grep -oE '((1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])\.){3}(1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])' a bash variable that I can use in the snmpget -v2c -c private $ip OID instead, then I'll log that with datestamps to an appending file I though with this

while true ; do
        echo -n `date --rfc-3339=seconds`","
        echo -n `hostname`","
        snmpget -v2c -c private $ip OID

clear ferry

ohhhhhhh

clever mortar
#

Though I tend to zsh rather than bash

unreal orbit
#

Is there a reason for that or just cause?

clever mortar
#

Mostly because zsh, like ksh before it, supports external functions

#

So I can re-use my code more easily

#

For example, I can write a function that parses the ipmitool output to extract the IP, and then any time I need to do that in the future I can just call that function

#

If I improve the function, everything gets the improvement

unreal orbit
#

I see, makes sense

clear ferry
#

I need to deepdive more into shell scripting....

strange vapor
#

@clear ferry You can do the same with most shell languages. For example in bash, throw the functions/aliases into a file, and then just source filename to bring them into the current shell.

clear ferry
#

That one I actually knew PepeLightsabers

#

I've worked with Linux for 20 years, but I've barely scraped surfaces, it's mostly just to get by, I've never had day to day managing of it, which is the killer of all ingenuity

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but with zsh you just say hey, look in this path for your functions

#

You can even use shell magic in there, so that you can auto-build paths based off the script name or folder...

#

Now you have a default location, a location for this "package" and a location for this script in that package blob_dance

strange vapor
#

I used to work with a guy who wrote proper full scale apps with just sh. His primary reasoning was that he was a BSD fan and sh is always available....

#

He did have a massive library of functions to help

clever mortar
#

One reason I want to learn Python is so that I can migrate some of the stuff I've got to that

#

But, shell "just works"

Did you know you can send DC and AC current over the same wire?

#

You use something called a Bias-T. Its used to power things like Pre-Amps and other devices in radio applications up the transmission line.

#

A bias t injects the DC into the AC line at the source and you use another bias t at the end to extract the DC

So what if you built a socket that has a switch on it that can switch between AC and DC power?

Ofc you cant send DC a long distance so its really kinda useless except in a single branch

New cases in Ireland are down in low double figures at the moment. However, the pubs reopened yesterday, and some people decided to go on day long benders despite restrictions in place ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Expecting a surge in two weeks time

green inlet
#

Of course I donโ€™t hear from everyone, but the cases you do hear about are mostly just, โ€œI had a fever and no other symptomsโ€. The 30 somethings are out and about and saying feck it

#

Masks are now mandatory in my state in places where you canโ€™t social distance. I believe in masks but they way they are being used by most probably isnโ€™t effective.

hushed basalt
#

When we truly get down to zero and stay there, only then will organisations have the confidence to start hiring again

#

Do projects, consulting, advertising, events etc

#

So it has a huge effect on our economy when there's still even a trickle

green inlet
#

Really? Thatโ€™s a shame.

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt I've intereviewed two people so far this week for my team. Going to be a pain to train up someone who's working remotely, but we need more bodies, so....

green inlet
#

A lot of businesses are opening up here. They have plastic partitions in front of registers, 6 ft markers on the floors, shoes, shirt and masks required.

clear ferry
#

we have been open for over a month for 99% of businesses

#

just plastic partitions and 1m distance

strange vapor
#

@green inlet The Guardian were reporting on that yesterday

#

Most likely any new strain is going to be considered an "Oh F**k!!" moment now even if the majority of them are relatively harmless.

green inlet

Just the next news cycle I guess. Wether it becomes a thing ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

H1N1 was merely a blip on the radar in 2009

#

We have lots of shopping and bars and clubs open etc

green inlet

I drink bleach in my coffee every morning as a precautionary measure anyway

@hushed basalt my managers and my managers manager, and her managers manager reached out to me and said "you will NOT be forced to take any form of leave, please stay"

But no one is willing to spend if it's not a direct short term benefit

They're afraid of everything crashing again like it did earlier this year.

Crashing? Has Australia become a third world country?

re: customs. They're not worried about confectionaries. They're worried about things that carry biorisks

Does Norway have taco Tuesday?

hushed basalt
#

They have waffle n-day

strange vapor
#

@hushed basalt Our problem is that we sort of need a more Junior person as we're sort of top heavy in the team!

green inlet
#

Waffles with cheese and jam.....everyone knows a proper waffles has peanut butter and syrup.

clear ferry
#

I'm middle-heavy

#

brown cheese or gtfo btw @green inlet

#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

we usually have taco friday though

#

but in our house we eat taco atleast twice a week

#

taco is the most popular dinner dish in norway

green inlet
#

Now see, you do have a good side ๐Ÿคฃ

clear ferry
green inlet
#

Now try peanut butter and syrup on your waffles

#

I guess I should ask. Not seal or whale tacos correct?

clear ferry
#

that would be possible

#

but we do regular ground beef usually

#

which means I get a taste of some raw ground beef whenever we make it togaDROOL

green inlet
#

With Carolina reaper sauce I hope

clear ferry
#

well, we do different hotsauces, varying intensity depending on my asshole

#

๐Ÿคฃ

green inlet
#

Yes, well Carolina Reaper is a definite intensity on your asshole.

clear ferry
#

Think the hottest sauce we have used is rated at 450.000 scovilles

#

then we only use a little and water it out for inclusion in our spring rolls

green inlet

Off to exercise. Update day ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐ŸŒฎ

I'm probably gonna switch back to OpenVPN from wireguard...my work and some other networks I connect to block wireguard

really

scenic radish

Didn't realize wireguard doesn't obfuscate its traffic

clear ferry

I usually see blocking of openvpn, because UDP lulz

Wireguard is UDP too

oh right it is

I thought it was TCP

I run Wireguard and OpenVPN (on UDP and TCP) to increase the odds of being able to get through firewalls ๐Ÿ˜„

#

443/TCP FTW ๐Ÿ˜›

strange vapor
#

@clever mortar If using OpenVPN, start using sslh as well. Really cool little proxy that runs on port 443. If it detects https, it redirects to Apache, OpenVPN to OpenVPN and handles SSH as well.

clever mortar
#

Interesting...

scenic radish
#

yeah i guess i could run both...looks like it's possible to install the other protocol with pivpn

strange vapor

Used to use that along with Corkscrew to get around silly proxy restrcitions.

last dirge

that's the redhat devops thing, right?

last dirge

I haven't used ansible but have used chef, puppet, and salt

the ops guys at work are supposed to be "learning ansible"

hushed basalt

I've heard good things about salt

last dirge

so I guess I'll end up having to do it

I liked salt a lot

I wrote a java app that let people WYSIWYG VM instances in vsphere

hushed basalt

I thought someone would be more likely to go from ansible to salt not the other way around

last dirge

used salt to configure the instance after it was PXI booted

the guy in charge of infrastructure is REALLY freaked out by open source stuff

that doesn't have immediate, inbuilt support

one of these years i will get around to ansible/chef

I should get around to ansible really soon

since I'm supposed to deploy some 500 servers with it sometime around christmas

I'll start looking at it around the 14th of December then

strange vapor

@hushed basalt Primarily using Terrafrom these days, but Ansible is the glue holding some of it together!

hushed basalt
#

@last dirge I'd rather get "support" from vetted consultants rather than enterprise support half the time

last dirge
#

@hushed basalt no kidding

hushed basalt
#

Especially when you're not directly consuming their service, but using their tools

#

As in you're not depending on their servers

I need to look into terraform

I wouldn't recommend ansible if you can avoid it @last dirge
