C levels look the same as us when they're in their underwear
I hate C level/partner worshippers
Like they think they're literally gods or something
heh
I was in front of the BoD when getting hired on and I told them this:
"You are hiring me because you think I am more capable of doing the job than you are. You are paying for my experience. I expect you to listen to me."
Its business. Dont expect me to not be to the point about it.
Im here to get shit done and do my job.
Not pander to your feelings and power complex
One of the VPs laughed and I knew I was in the right place
In the end, C-Levels/VPs/Partners/Execs are useless without those under them
If everyone decided to give a ๐, they are suddenly worthless
I will happily knock someone off the high horse they rode in on and remind them they stand on the same ground we all do.
Man.... Amazon turned me into an angry cynical person heh
Our politicians need to be reminded they're public servants sometimes, haha.
I need to study now, but I'll leave you all with a nice relaxing video
Are you interested in Lean Manufacturing? Well take a trip to the shop floor and see a lean factory tour at FastCap in Ferndale, Washington.
If you like this video, give it a thumbs up & subscribe to our channel.

Happy learning and oh boy, factory tours!
Do it, Paul Akkers (founder) is pretty OCD and a bit of a sociopath but it's still fun
Foam cutout for tools in drawers...
Mmmmmmph
Sociopath and OCD?!
Id love this guy
There's a 2.0 version of that tour but I find it too high energy
Ugh... woah there buddy, the cart goes behind the horse
Put too many horses on the cart and itll rip apart too
Watch any of his newer videos and he's all gogogo eliminate as much waste in this conversation as possible

Power supply out of the ER-X by Ubiquiti.
Common mode suppression choke was bypassed. So was some resistive filters
And some shit soldering
๐คข
lol telco not victorian
ha
This thing was causing enough EMI and noise to flip every damn UPS I had
Decided to rip it apart only to file the largest pile of shit china made power supply I have seen yet
There is no way in hell this thing is UL Listed
Morning
Fi fie foe fum
your feet smell

lol that's messed up there is an emoji for that
I tried to order a bunch of end of financial year stuff off aliexpress
But I might not even be in this house by the time some of it arrives
i thought au had dhl
Yeah but then you're paying more in shipping than what it's worth
it's only here in the US that alieexpress crap takes 6 months or better to show
Might as well buy locally
Can take 1-3 months here
3 months is past our exit date
New Tenants would just RTS everything,
Usually AliExpress took 1 month ish , sometimes two
Yeah it's just a risk
During covid its been 3 month plus
And the UL listing on the PSU is not for that Power Supply but another entirely diff one
amazing
What do you think of Mikrotik
p.s. @clear ferry I'm not interested in comparisions against HPe gear 20x the price
Probably better than unifi
oofph
This looks like a very interesting piece of kit
48P 802.3af/at, 4 x SFP+, 2 x QSFP+
Tink said they were good atleast
@mild tapir get use to it, Chinese have been doing that kind of crap since the start
Never seen one irl
Yeah but someone like UniFi not even using a power supply thats at least alibaba grade?
This is 2 steps down
watched a documentary here not long ago about how they get around crap and just how fast and persistent they are at anything to do with other country trade
UniFi dosen't care unless they get mass complaint reports
MikroTik is honestly really decent
As always, check out Rohit's main site review for more in-depth analysis and some bits we could not cover in this video: https://www.servethehome.com/mikrotik-crs354-48p-4s-2q-rm-review/
With 48x PoE+ ports, over 700W of PoE power, 4x SFP+ 10GbE, and 2x QSFP+ 40GbE ports for ...
Very cheap for what it is
Even their Wisp and WiFi gear is pretty good
I dread the passive PoE they use on a ton of it though
If it was about 3 years ago, I wouldve said no to mikrotik but they actually listened to the customers
which is... unheard of anymore
I could get 48 RPI4 8GBs with POE hats and make a monster k3s cluster
Could and should are different things though
I was about to say "but why"
I'll raise you the "active" Poe I experienced on a a7500 comware switch, all 150 Poe ports could be used for welding when I attached a cable and held it against metal, because of arcing in the power supply
Yikes
I could get 48 RPI4 8GBs with POE hats and make a monster k3s cluster
@hushed basalt someone has already slapped like over 1000 of them together
Oracle: Because money
You know, there was major reports of the ER-X crashing... I wonder if it has to do with this power supply looking like a damn AC current on my scope killing the damn thing
heh
They must need the AC ripple as a clock signal ๐
this is why the pi foundation decided to spend over a year to prioritize getting the network boot going instead of piping out the usb boot within a month prior
screw all the thousands of people who could have been using usb boot, we need to get network booting for these corp crap displays going first
Honestly, the fact it took them so long was pathetic
I have about 5 RPIs doing nothing
Just haven't thought of a good solution for them
The pi is a nice kids toy
Better than a hand grenade
I'd probably use one as a zigbee bridge when I actually have some structured cabling
No point doing it over wifi atm
I use one of my mesh points as a physical link to my pi that runs Zigbee2mqtt
Had no issues so far with that
y u mesh tho
Rofl, I ripped apart an IW-AC-AP that is 10 board revisions apart and loads of shit is missing. Including an optical isolator.
derp
Time to see if this thing is still FCC complaint
and the Passive PoE parts in some of this shit I am tearing apart is using a buck converter that has massive EMI output. Amazing

Speaking of breakfast, I love the American grape flavour, especially on jam, but it doesn't taste like grape tbh
there are so many different "grape flavors" from synthetic to half it's insane
do you just eat the waffle without syrup?
@forest edge we do brown cheese or strawberry jam usually
You can see the brown cheese poking out in one corner of it
had to google brown cheese
Brunost, made with whey and milk and/or cream. The main ingredient, whey, is a byproduct of the cheese making process, it is what is left when the cheese is removed from the milk. Therefore, brunost is not technically cheese, and it does not taste like cheese
Wikipeda also says; The texture is firm, but slightly softer than Gouda cheese, for example, and lends itself well to cutting and shaping. It does not crumble like hard cheeses. The taste is sweet, and best described as caramel-like
(for anyone else who is intrested)
thats soo deam true ๐

Just nuked my ha_os install out of frustration with it, thinking of doing supervised instead this time, any advice (on picking between the two)?
My main thoughts for wanting supervised are so I can actually get to a real bash terminal so I can hook other things up (could not figure out a way to do so under ha_os) and to help simplify the networking in general.

Hmmmmm
I'm sorry, I feel real stupid, but ... ADR?
If I would want to run a for loop with snmpget and I was interested in storing both the IP of the host I'm polling and the last three characters of the output to a file for every for so for example for ip in 192.168.1.{32..99} do 'snmpget -v2c -c private $ip iso.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.3.629' and I would like to store the last three chars of the OID, I figured grep -o '...$' will store the three chars I want there, but how would I store the complete IP of each for together with the three characters? and append those to a file at the same time ? ๐ค
or actually, I can just store the whole command, that way I know which OID I'm storing it for, because I'm going to poll two different ones
Not exactly home assistant, but brought a cheap set of RGB lights on amazon, an i think i know what chip they use
because Pimoroni sell them
@clear ferry do nested groupings work in regex?
looks like this would work
\$ip (.*(...))$
$1 would give you the whole IP, $2 would give you just the last 3
Since this is for 320 nodes I've fallen back to place it on a shared storage volume, and output the commands to local files instead, now I just need to find a way to make this ipmitool lan print | grep "IP Address" | grep -oE '((1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])\.){3}(1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])' a bash variable that I can use in the snmpget -v2c -c private $ip OID instead, then I'll log that with datestamps to an appending file I though with this
while true ; do
echo -n `date --rfc-3339=seconds`","
echo -n `hostname`","
snmpget -v2c -c private $ip OID
sleep 10
done
[ ]{1}(\S*(...))$
oof you nerd
that'll give you everything with no white space in it after the last space on the line
grouping the whole "word" and the last 3 digits
I can't help but still be of the opinion that if you use regex to solve a problem, now you have two problems.
what's the output look like?
my preferable output would be something like 2020-06-30 14:31:47+02:00,chopper,iso.3.6.1.2.1.4.22.1.3.629 58
no, I mean the output from the command you're trying to read
regex might be too big of a hammer
oh, from ipmitool lan print | grep "IP Address" | grep -oE '((1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])\.){3}(1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5]) ? to begin with it looks like this IP Address : 10.226.245.41 and I just want to store that IP address to a variable that I can use in the above mentioned script
use sed
I'm even worse at sed ๐คฃ
cut can work in columns ๐

IP Address : 10.226.245.41```
while this gives me what I want directly ```[root@dl360g10d42u03 ~]# ipmitool lan print | grep "IP Address" | grep -oE '((1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5]).){3}(1?[0-9][0-9]?|2[0-4][0-9]|25[0-5])'
10.226.245.41
Although I'm not allowed to store that to a variable
The only way I can use reggex is with http://www.debuggex.com/
Test your regex by visualizing it with a live editor. JavaScript, Python, and PCRE.
ipmitool lan print | grep -e "IP Address\s*:" | awk '{print $NF}'

That emote is adorable.
I assume you were trying to filter out the IP Address Source ??
Easier to just match on the whitespace and :
now to store the output of that command to a variable
VAR=`ipmitool lan print | grep -e "IP Address\s*:" | awk '{print $NF}'`
Arrgh, damn backticks being special in Discord ๐
ooof I'm almost there
I can smell it
there we go
now to find the absolutely correct OIDs
@clear ferry I would have thought you'd be all over the Redfish API.... Isn't that the best thing since sliced bread in HPE land?
well yes, but we can't use it for this system I've been told, it's a SNMP OID value only

well yes but actually no
WONDERBAR
@clear ferry posted a code wall, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/g5gpbqtNrP/
๐ฆ
I thought mods were immune

I thought we were too... ๐คท
so, should I pipe to a file inside the .sh or start the .sh with a pipe to file ๐ค

I tend to prefer passing the file as an argument
Then you can do whatever you want, split it, process it live, etc
as in tinkerer.sh >> file.log ?
ohhhhhhh
Though I tend to zsh rather than bash
Is there a reason for that or just cause?
Mostly because zsh, like ksh before it, supports external functions
So I can re-use my code more easily
For example, I can write a function that parses the ipmitool output to extract the IP, and then any time I need to do that in the future I can just call that function
If I improve the function, everything gets the improvement
I see, makes sense
I need to deepdive more into shell scripting....
@clear ferry You can do the same with most shell languages. For example in bash, throw the functions/aliases into a file, and then just source filename to bring them into the current shell.
That one I actually knew
I've worked with Linux for 20 years, but I've barely scraped surfaces, it's mostly just to get by, I've never had day to day managing of it, which is the killer of all ingenuity
Yeah, but with zsh you just say hey, look in this path for your functions
You can even use shell magic in there, so that you can auto-build paths based off the script name or folder...
Now you have a default location, a location for this "package" and a location for this script in that package
I used to work with a guy who wrote proper full scale apps with just sh. His primary reasoning was that he was a BSD fan and sh is always available....
He did have a massive library of functions to help
One reason I want to learn Python is so that I can migrate some of the stuff I've got to that
But, shell "just works"
Anyone know what happens with data if you don't pay gsuite account, does google keep your data for a while. i.e. can I use it for cold storage until I pay again to regain access?
Very volatile but seems a possible workaround for free unlimited storage?
Google answers that ๐
After you cancel your G Suite subscription, user accounts and G Suite data will be deleted and can't be restored
Took me all of 2 seconds
I was reading here https://support.google.com/a/answer/1257646?hl=en, I thought you were reverted to Gsuite basic as your domain is still associated
Cancel a G Suite subscriptionIf G Suite Essentialsย or Cloud Identity is your only subscription, see instead Cancel G Suiteย Essentialsย or Cancel Cloud Identity
After you delete G Suite or your account, G Suite user data will be deleted
After you cancel your G Suite subscription, user accounts and G Suite data will be deleted and canโt be restored. Before you continue, you will likely need to save your data.
Basic is still a paid plan
fair I guess i could change plan to Gsuite basic which instils 30gb limit
Google Drive usually keeps data, but prevents uploading new content
Try it and let us know ๐
I just do the gsuite "unlimited" for $10 per month
Everything in Google Drive, and Gmail will still be accessible, but you won't be able to create or add anything new over the free storage limit. If you reach or exceed the free storage limit: Sweet so upload 1Eb of data on "unlimited" plan, downgrade to basic plan and pay for $5 a month. Much cheaper than Amazon Glacier
Not sure how I missed this story: https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/a33j5a/a-redditor-archived-nearly-2-million-gigabytes-of-porn-to-test-amazons-unlimited-cloud-storage
you get to use your own domain?
I just pay the 10$ and use my own domain
See the issue is the paying of $10 a month ๐
I spend more than that in drinks any given day
it's pocket change
Look at Mr. Moneybags @clear ferry over here, can just throw around $10/day on drinks
I guess there won't be anything comparable for 10 buck for unlimited
Anytime soon
And I still have my domain for more than 9 years reserved, I just hope it'll be cheap then to renew

ahh okay... what is the nonsense ๐ ?
Closed source

no app for my smart tv?
What smart tv?
yikes
If the new google chromecast coming out can do power on the TV I will buy it and try something like jellyfin out (don't like having two remotes)
I haven't found a TV OS I like more than Roku
Does roku do power to your tv?
ahh gotcha, most likely will be getting the phillips amblight android tv on next upgrade
the lights changing with content is so cool
seems gimmicky to me
You seen it in person?
nope
Some might not care I guess, but I really like it, its not just colors change with content but it blends colors
Its either that or the Samsung frame
Amblight LED ยฃ600 vs Samsung frame ยฃ1600, so will most likely not go for the frame lol
I just have a static LED strip behind the TV that turns on with the TV. Even static color gives a nice effect
easier on the eyes at night
bias lighting ftw
make sure if its white tunable you set it to 6500k as thats the same white balance they use for filming movies/tv shows etc...
ever since i set mine up i noticed less fatigue at night...it really helps to keep the pupils at the same dilation when ur watching things
I set it to blue by default. The color changes depending on what game I'm playing otherwise
Didn't know there was a name for it or actual science behind the benefits lol
I just thought it looked neat
just think of one of those doctors head lights they use
have they redone ambilight?
last time I saw it it was only on plasma TVs and was essentially just holes in the back of the casement
I prefer to watch in complete darkness as long as it is possible
I have trouble seeing much in complete darkness tbh
Unfortunately living in a rental I can't paint the walls black...
rolling credit screens on a black background hurt my eyes, especially on my OLED
I'll have a try some lighting behind the screen
Could be that I'd change my mind as well with a bright screen, but with a projector you can never get the room dark enough
I got an email "anybody know what this stuff in this S3 bucket is? We're doing a budget analysis"
it's less than $0.10/month
Spending more analyzing it than implementing it ๐ฏ

@dull chasm ATMOS tracks, life changing. Screwed forever now.

Late to the conversation, but bias lighting is great. Helps reduce eyestrain and also increases the perceived contrast ratio of your TV
Fashionably late
You've sent me down a rabbit hole. It seems my Vero4k running Hyperion should be able to control a wled string quite easily.
mfw I just found out my lighter has a flame adjustment
I did see a cool kit with raspberry pi zero and ws2812
This was the one I was thinking of doing
@forest edge different shoes though. ๐ค
Why? Do you watch TV or the colors behind the TV? That just nonsense! I use led light bias, rarely see what color is behind the tv.
Gives enough ambient light - is all I need!
@clear ferry
Woo! Just #yolo updated to esxi7 via esxcli without backing up
It was fast AND it worked seamlessly. I only expected one of those things to be true.
you have to experience it
Do you use CCT leds for your bias lights
@mild tapir excited to try it out. Haven't had time to look into it yet
Might try to move some things like Tautulli/Sonarr/Radarr over from the NAS
It's a big mindset change from docker to kubernetes
anybody having problems with Plex on Shield?
Plex is always a problem
@hushed basalt Its key to remember there is a difference in what they really are. Docker and K8s are not interchangeable. K8s is orchestration of containers.
k8s deploys containers/dockers in clusters
@last dirge Media server or client?
working fine for me
mfw my RJ45 crimper broke a tooth and my cable is no longer long enough to cut and attach another RJ45 Connector onto
lovely
mine always screws up the clicky part
Thats what I get for using cheap tools
I don't make many cables so I use the EZ RJ45, super easy, perfect crimp every time
that's interesting
I use those too
yes
Now I got a proper tool otw. These actually have the Pass Through/EZ RJ45 Wire cutters too.
the connectors cost more, but I don't make tons so I'd rather just have it give me perfect ends lol.
most of the time its easier to just buy pre made off monoprice
They have thankfully gotten cheaper
but sometimes you need that custom length
In this case, it was in wall runs
The pass through connectors are well worth it.
Totally
Although it took me a while to figure out I could make longer wires and feed them individually.
Oh you used to line them up and shove them in?
Yes, like the old connectors lmao
I did the same exact thing at first
I used to hate terminating cat 6
I had to crimp 900 cables and eventually I figured that trick out
Now ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
Yea, I just do it here and there so it took someone showing me ha ha ha
๐คฆโโ๏ธ amiright
A good teacher is a valued ally and co-worker. Intuition only goes so far

@last dirge what's wrong with Plex client ?
I had to log out and back in
shield couldn't connect to it at all
web client worked
Shield is Android TV
Indeed. But I wouldnt consider it a full blown "Set top box"
It handles everything I use - YTTV, Kodi, Plex, HBOMax, Hulu, etc. literally everything I use
Whatโs missing?
Big one for me was the XLR Balanced Outputs and the interesting NFS/SMB Sharing.
The sound quality coming out of these is amazing
why wouldn't you just push all of that to a server so you don't have to redo it on every single device?
seems bass ackwards
I just use HDMI, but I get that there are strong opinions on that
I do have a central server.
I cache the data I currently have on my watch list locally on the devices to ensure 0 buffer
Done automatically through my WL Server
I also find the H.265 Decoding to be much smoother but that may just be me.
The new Shield TV Pro supports Atmos, HDR10, Dolby Vision. Itโs pretty great for me
Mine was a Gen 1
@last dirge so server restart fixed it? Got 5 or so shield pros haven't noticed anything similar.
I still have the original on one TV
Original still fine if not looking for ATMOS on Netflix.
The Hulu app isnโt great, so I use AppleTV for that when needed
Or DV
Agreed, v1 is still good. It beats ATV and Roku for me
Part of it is that I can automate it easily with ADB and intents
Love adb stuff and now the preview.
Personally I wouldn't use rj45 if you didn't need to
App level source monitoring is next level.
I have a Patch Panel in the Server Rack but the Access Points use a male RJ45
and they mount on a gang box
Access points and stuff sure absolutely
@static schooner do you use tinycampro?
But I see a lot of people on the net using rj45 and couplers for everything
otherwise its a hybrid wall plate for Multi Mode + RJ45 Keystones
Also: Ewwwww couplers
Nope
It literally breaks the twisted pair
When I was in Telstra the techs would run cat cable with rj45 straight from equipment port to port
Tinycam + shield best thing to pop up cameras on any display. @static schooner
I've done that on one end
Anyone using frigate?
PAtCH pANELs aNd IDfs wAsTe vAluAbLe SpAcE
Literally every time a business customer needs a connection a tech would drive from Perth 500km away, and run cables overhead one at a time
I have played with frigate myself but I dont use it currently. I use another toolkit for Shinobi for Facial and Object ID
https://opencv.org/ with CUDA
Not into facial but testing tensor/deepstack and now frigate.
The only thing I use facial for is "X is at your front door" and so on
which is kinda cool
I havent played with deepstack
I need to
Deepstack Vs Tensor, DS much reliable. Been running tensor for few years
What wall plates did you use for your multimode @mild tapir
The keystone is Cable Matters, the wall plates are Leviton's Screwless
I was thinking of going surface mount
So the fibre and cat doesn't come out at right angles from the wall
And you can push furniture right up against it safely
These are nice
Hmm interesting
American outlets would never match aussie ones style wise anyways. So they'd look like sore thumbs either way
Honeywell's product listings are amazing
Yeah lets just leave the wires still attached
Is that for a doorbell?
Alarm
I bet you could use it for a Doorbell
I use a Honeywell Vista 20 Panel with Eyezon Network Interface (Acts as Virtual Keypad) to interface with Home Assistant.
Wired doorbells aren't very common in Aus
When I bought my edgerouter x and unifi AP I was so excited when I realized I could power both the router and AP with the PoE injector that comes with the AP
There is something I really want to try despite it being technically inefficient.
Did you know you can send DC and AC current over the same wire?
You use something called a Bias-T. Its used to power things like Pre-Amps and other devices in radio applications up the transmission line.
A bias t injects the DC into the AC line at the source and you use another bias t at the end to extract the DC
So what if you built a socket that has a switch on it that can switch between AC and DC power?
Ofc you cant send DC a long distance so its really kinda useless except in a single branch
Prob a really stupid idea in practice but it would be an interesting project
@tidal bronze I upgraded the server thinking maybe the client changed and it stopped working but no
had to log out of my plex account on the shield and re-link it
That's a strange one. Specially the re-link
yeah
YouTube is suddenly recommending I watch beekeeping videos
there's a surprising amount of attractive women with beekeeping channels

So the only company that can produce Remdesivir is a company called Gilead, and the us is going to decline into a wasteland, The Handmaid's Tale is confirmed
@clear ferry that is such a rip off, trump spent millions of tax payer money into that and we find out he has stock in that company is the reason why

Reverse that emoji and itll be true
anyone know a good discord server where i can get some help with some powershell stuff?
yah, i am using a command in an ansible project of mine and i need it to get used sid from windows ๐
the problem is powershell command outputs an string that have /r/n at the end
and i don't know how to remove that
so you just need to remove /r/n from the string as a whole ?
tr is your brute force friend
@hushed basalt thank you very much I've fix it on ansible level
because like @clear ferry said, powershell sucks ๐
- name: Get String
whatever_module_to_get_string:
register: sid
- name: Use String Here
use_in_module_here: "{{ sid.stdout | regex_replace('\/r\/n$', '') }}"
used this, in case you ever need it: "{{ item.stdout | trim }}"
that trim will strip that stuff
looking at your solution, i think it work well, thanks for your help man, much appreciated
Yeah you're right a trim should work since it's just newline and return
yep
i am loving it ๐
i never tried it saltsteak i mean
but ansible is agentless so this is why i am loving it
It's more advanced but far more scalable
Sometimes an agent is a small price to pay
i guess, donno, maybe some day will learn that too
for now ansible fill all my needs and desires ๐
Anyone passing through a zigbee dongle to a vm in proxmox
I can't get it to work but I may just give up and put it on a pi
oh dont do that, pi is bad
bad boy pi
๐
@hushed basalt what is happening, what should do and it doesn't?
I plug in a zigbee dongle to the host and it shows up. And when I pass it through it doesn't show up in the vm
I've had zero issues with Proxmox like that
Plugged in my new Zig-A-Zig-Ah yesterday, configured it (command line) to pass through, done
Remember if it shows in red in the UI you need to restart the VM
Checked dmesg in the VM?
dmesg should show something
If not, the stick isn't being passed through and the weirdness of Proxmox strikes again
Yeah it's definitely not being passed through
No idea why and no where else to go
Raspberry Pi it is
Eh too high effort i have to keep moving
Don't want it to become a 4 hour excercise I've already wasted an hour on it
I've already checked every forum post and issue I can find
That's nice, DO IT FASTER
MANAGEMENT
Well that was fast, 180TB storage installed in 55 minutes
@clear ferry plugged in an external usb 3 ssd huh?

Only 9 @low harness ๐ค
I was surprised too.
@clever mortar
ok, plex in my other VM is much easier to use, that's cool.
Wanna say thanks to all of you who keep helping me, it's much appreciated ๐
If you think plex in a VM is cool! wait till you see plex in a bsd jail!
I should clean my desk some day
I mean, I'm running plex in a vm in docker XD
VM in docker ? that sounds unlikely
Sorry
That sentence was an atrocity against the human language; I am running docker in a VM, which is running plex. (It's my box-o-containers)
I don't want the overhead of all of the VMs.
I at one point had 50+ VMs here in my garage, that is now down to 2 VMs though
Overhead ? I hardly knew her
for modern CPUs it is negligable anyway
Especially for things that are generally neglible or run very intermitently anyways
Like, 99% of the time, Plex is asleep, might as well have it share resources.
I think my plex only sleeps 1 hour per day, I use it atleast 5 hours every day, and I share it with 40ish people by now
Home Assistant will get it's own VM likely, seems easier to manage, and mycroft will go onto the box-o-containers too
No rest for the wicked!
Yeah mine just has a bunch of old music in it so far.
I started with HA in a pi, then a vm, then container, now in a jail
container and jail makes the most sense to me
I hadn't either until a year or so ago
then again, I hadn't used docker a year ago either
Docker and I have been at it a while now.
I would def qualify for 'early adopter' in docker.
and I moved to nginx from apache after 20 years this year ๐ค
Big year for you!
I'm prolly going to move off docker for my newest work project tho
every year is big for me, I learn atleast 5 new products every year ๐คฃ
Gonna move into podman for me.
MANAGERS LOVE THIS ONE TRICK
@hushed basalt is kind a good way to get to know kube ?
Can I presume you mean kubernetes?
aye
Yeesh, do I wanna know what you're doing that k8s makes sense?
That's a good reason, no gripes from me.
I'm already the only consultant in country for Vmware, why not deepdive into k8s and docker too
now that k8s is part of vsphere7 too
My boss at my last company who I still keep in touch with is fond of pointing out that most people using k8s don't need k8s.
It really is a nuclear option for mangament.
Even if it's super cool and powerful.
aye, I have multiple customers sniffing on it already, so might as well get the gist
especially since vmware is flaunting it
It's super cool. If you have actual mission critical services using properly designed container services that are disposable, interchangable and immutable, it really can be awesome.
@nimble rover you know that docker was invented to fix some problems that vm's rise
i mean running a docker container in a vm is something i never heard ๐
I've worked with mission critical zero downtime solutions for close to 15 years, I trust hpux serviceguard more than k8s though ๐คฃ
Or, in some cases, scalable, can't forget how good k8s is for horizontal scaling.
@pseudo glen that is how most of us run docker tbh, atleast for personal use
hypervisor on top, then a dedicated docker vm
Infra stuff is not super new to me, but for most of my time I've just been a good ol codemonkey, only the past 6-7 years have really had a lot of infra in em
Have you have the fun of SELinux + Docker yet @clear ferry ?
yeah, it was a pita on opensuse, broke some stuff at times
haven't had issues after moving to debian
Are you using super tight policies, or more general use ones?
whatever is default, if I could disable selinux totally I would ๐คฃ
haha, and I go out of my way to enable it for work. I think I'm just the guy who is right in front of you making a mess XD
lolol
I like you people, you're my kind of nerds ๐
That said, it's only the right call in extremely controlled enviroments.
I'm a good old angry fecker, nobody should like me
Perfect, we can shake angry canes at things in sequence.

@clear ferry maybe ask your customers if they've tried ecs on aws ;)

Everyone seems to use mini kube for local testing
There's two sides to kubernetes though. Managing and using it.
Only 10TB left on my zpool, I hope TrueNAS 12 comes soon with zpool expansion at the get go ๐คฃ
@fluid zephyr We are excited to announce that TrueNAS 12.0 BETA has hit both the target date and our quality goals. The BETA release has completed two full cycles of QA (the same as FreeNAS 11.3 RC1) and testing from almost 1,000 users. There are no high priority issues and we can now recommend that the Community can upgrade their FreeNAS 11.3 systems and start their TrueNAS 12.0 testing.
!!!oneoneeleven
You could always move to ceph
God damn travellers keep bringing in covid
They're all quaranteed but they technically count on our stats
We keep getting down to 1 or 2 then a couple more fly in
WHY ARE YOU BRINGING 2000 KG MUSHROOMS IN YOUR CARRY ON BAGS MAM ?
I've just watched the Australian Border Control program
it is hilarious
And they are almost always chinese old ladies
Why is 0 so important when 1 or 2 is really inconsequential
@clear ferry Years ago I went to Sydney to visit my brother. I had Taytos and some Cadbury's chocolate, all sealed in my luggage, which I happily declared. Got diverted to the area you see on that Aussie customs show.
The Customs guy pened up my bag, looked at it, looked at me, and told me to tell my brother there's a shop near the airport in Sydney that now imports all that stuff, and that was it. I was actually through customs and having a coffee with my brother while waiting for the friend I was travelling with to get through normal border control.
There was a woman further down in the room who was was opening up a bag, and the smell of fish....
Nah, no cameras there at all.
1 or 2 isn't inconsequential if they get through
And the customs guy I dealt with was sound. They're used to seeing Irish travelling in with that type of stuff, and once it's sealed they don't care.
We had 1200 new cases yesterday in my state alone ๐คข
Hospital cases arenโt growing though
there was close to 10k new ones in california yesterday I saw
some counties were at 100% capacity in hospital beds
There are reports now of hospitals over admitting for federal money
Capitalism
Socialism ๐คข
New cases in Ireland are down in low double figures at the moment. However, the pubs reopened yesterday, and some people decided to go on day long benders despite restrictions in place ๐ฆ Expecting a surge in two weeks time
Of course I donโt hear from everyone, but the cases you do hear about are mostly just, โI had a fever and no other symptomsโ. The 30 somethings are out and about and saying feck it
Masks are now mandatory in my state in places where you canโt social distance. I believe in masks but they way they are being used by most probably isnโt effective.
When we truly get down to zero and stay there, only then will organisations have the confidence to start hiring again
Do projects, consulting, advertising, events etc
So it has a huge effect on our economy when there's still even a trickle
Really? Thatโs a shame.
@hushed basalt I've intereviewed two people so far this week for my team. Going to be a pain to train up someone who's working remotely, but we need more bodies, so....
A lot of businesses are opening up here. They have plastic partitions in front of registers, 6 ft markers on the floors, shoes, shirt and masks required.
we have been open for over a month for 99% of businesses
just plastic partitions and 1m distance
I havent confirmed but I saw a post the other day about another nasty virus in China ๐คฃ
@green inlet The Guardian were reporting on that yesterday
Most likely any new strain is going to be considered an "Oh F**k!!" moment now even if the majority of them are relatively harmless.
Just the next news cycle I guess. Wether it becomes a thing ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
H1N1 was merely a blip on the radar in 2009
@strange vapor most places here have cut their junior/entry level intakes
don't worry, just take some malaria medicine and drink bleach
Big 4 Consultancies have let go hundreds of staff each
We have lots of shopping and bars and clubs open etc
I drink bleach in my coffee every morning as a precautionary measure anyway
@hushed basalt my managers and my managers manager, and her managers manager reached out to me and said "you will NOT be forced to take any form of leave, please stay"
๐คฃ
But no one is willing to spend if it's not a direct short term benefit
They're afraid of everything crashing again like it did earlier this year.
Crashing? Has Australia become a third world country?
re: customs. They're not worried about confectionaries. They're worried about things that carry biorisks
just like the US @green inlet
Wood, grains, fresh produce, etc
They have waffle n-day
@hushed basalt Our problem is that we sort of need a more Junior person as we're sort of top heavy in the team!
Waffles with cheese and jam.....everyone knows a proper waffles has peanut butter and syrup.
I'm middle-heavy
brown cheese or gtfo btw @green inlet
๐คฃ
we usually have taco friday though
but in our house we eat taco atleast twice a week
taco is the most popular dinner dish in norway
Now see, you do have a good side ๐คฃ

Now try peanut butter and syrup on your waffles
I guess I should ask. Not seal or whale tacos correct?
that would be possible
but we do regular ground beef usually
which means I get a taste of some raw ground beef whenever we make it
With Carolina reaper sauce I hope
Yes, well Carolina Reaper is a definite intensity on your asshole.
Think the hottest sauce we have used is rated at 450.000 scovilles
then we only use a little and water it out for inclusion in our spring rolls
We eat the World's Hottest Chili Pepper -- the Carolina Reaper.

Off to exercise. Update day ๐๐ป๐ฎ
hump day you say
Huff and puff and spit and cough as I get my daily cardio in. I look like an old ford model t trying to make it around the neighborhood 4 times.
Minus the pajama bottoms and wife beater tank top. Yes
But I do jog commando so all the lonely housewifeโs have something to look forward too each day ๐คฃ
๐คฃ
I lolled irl
also I've already logged 2 bug reports for TrueNAS 12 BETA1 ๐คฃ
well that is just bloody strange
trying to setup openvpn with 2fa from opnsense

go home openvpn, you are drunk
I'm probably gonna switch back to OpenVPN from wireguard...my work and some other networks I connect to block wireguard
really
Didn't realize wireguard doesn't obfuscate its traffic
I usually see blocking of openvpn, because UDP lulz
Wireguard is UDP too
@strange vapor what does your company do
HR and Finance SAAS
SAAS dev must be challenging
Users don't know what's good for them :D
Can you please make this feature, it shouldn't take you very long. We just want our own internal facebook
I'm way down in the infrastructure level keeping the basics up and running! They don't let me near customers ๐
I run Wireguard and OpenVPN (on UDP and TCP) to increase the odds of being able to get through firewalls ๐
443/TCP FTW ๐
@clever mortar If using OpenVPN, start using sslh as well. Really cool little proxy that runs on port 443. If it detects https, it redirects to Apache, OpenVPN to OpenVPN and handles SSH as well.
Interesting...
yeah i guess i could run both...looks like it's possible to install the other protocol with pivpn
Used to use that along with Corkscrew to get around silly proxy restrcitions.
yay, I'm pretending to be a DBA today

@last dirge Is that what happened Canadian Tire??? https://www.freshdaily.ca/news/2020/06/multiple-canadian-tire-stores-forced-temporarily-close-scans-mr-potato-head/
You should have been worried when the UPDATE was taking so long!!!
it's potato heads all the way down
1,239,736 rows updated
uh oh
why does superscript not work?
"It's good to see that they eventually got to the "root" of the problem!"
UGH
๐
someone must've had their eyes closed
again
the software developer starchly denied the accusations
Another day, another dollar breach
"starchly" is today's word of the day โข๏ธ
indeed. i thought you mean "staunchly"
that's what I was punning
Do you use ansible much @strange vapor
that's the redhat devops thing, right?
Config management yeah,
I haven't used ansible but have used chef, puppet, and salt
the ops guys at work are supposed to be "learning ansible"
I've heard good things about salt
so I guess I'll end up having to do it
I liked salt a lot
I wrote a java app that let people WYSIWYG VM instances in vsphere
I thought someone would be more likely to go from ansible to salt not the other way around
used salt to configure the instance after it was PXI booted
the guy in charge of infrastructure is REALLY freaked out by open source stuff
that doesn't have immediate, inbuilt support
even though he's never once used or needed the inbuilt support
so we pay out the ass for RHN even though the only thing they use it for is patches
one of these years i will get around to ansible/chef
I should get around to ansible really soon
since I'm supposed to deploy some 500 servers with it sometime around christmas
๐ค
I'll start looking at it around the 14th of December then
@hushed basalt Primarily using Terrafrom these days, but Ansible is the glue holding some of it together!
@last dirge I'd rather get "support" from vetted consultants rather than enterprise support half the time
@hushed basalt no kidding
Especially when you're not directly consuming their service, but using their tools
As in you're not depending on their servers
I need to look into terraform
I wouldn't recommend ansible if you can avoid it @last dirge
@clear ferry Looks like that TrueNAS update isn't quite ready yet

Never be the first to upgrade to a point zero release ๐
But.... somebodies has to do it
Hi guys! After fiddling months with HA, and almost receiving an awesome Magic Mirror, i'm here to gain more knowledge of HA! So, first question, it's wednesday, any idea when 112 will be released? ๐

Usually some point during the day, but it's not got a fixed target
Great, really great! i'll put my sleeping bag on the street and'll wait! ๐
Just watch #announcements
And remember that if you're on anything other than #551864459891703809 you may have to wait a few hours
4pm Friday is the best time to push to production
I prefer 17:31
Hahaha
Git push and run
git push --force
Haha
./yolo.sh
Some of our clients wish to go live on friday 4pm... wellllll.. how 'bout no.
@clever mortar You know I gotta test other stuff ๐ .... It's more important for me to be testing my updated plugin, over having a stable NAS
I did get the devfs_rulset added to the manifest in time... Now USB pass through for Z-Wave and Zigbee
