I can accept crap batteries for free. 🙂

tidal bronze
#

I have vmotion but want to reuse the 1TB nvme boot drive from the old one.

#

If not its a snap.

clear ferry
#

Then just install the second one fresh, vmotion over, and then reuse it as you see fit

#

For boot I would never have anything else than usb or at most a pair of 15k drives

tidal bronze
#

Copy. Used nvme on my nucs for years. Want to keep it that way. 😀 so clean install and move over 👍 Thanks.

clear ferry
#

I would do that atleast

#

Fast storage for esxi boot has no value irl though

clever mortar
#

Doesn't everybody reboot their server daily?

undone aspen
#

Whaaat? No!

clever mortar
#

That's what I get from reading the posts here 😛

undone aspen
#

I reboot my PiZeroW's daily. LOL

clever mortar
#

I made a change to HA so I rebooted

undone aspen
#

Or my PoW's!

light trout
#

I thought about making a change, so I pulled the power plug and put it inn again

undone aspen
#

heh

clear ferry
#

Even then, esxi just loads 300MB into memory, then it stays there lmao

undone aspen
#

Well, hmmm. Now I need my girlfriend to come and hold up this motion sensor on the wall while I walk around and test it. LOL

clear ferry
#

You can easily replace her with double sided tape

undone aspen
#

But, I want to find the proper.... position.... placement.... For best.... Observation. 🙂

#

Hmmm, and I don't think Fun-Tak would do it. Kinda heavy, and has 3 AA alkalines for even more weight to them.

clear ferry
#

3AA for a motion sensor? Wow that sounds like something from the 80s

undone aspen
#

heh

#

Right?!?

#

It's a 4-in-1 supposedly, but I only care about the 1. Motion.

#

And, hmmm, SmartThings isn't getting updates from it immediately. Which is unusual.

#

Sweet,. Yep. Freeeeeee batteries.

#

Still, don't expect much from Chinese made AmazonBasics... But still.

#

Nice to know when they f'up so badly that they fix it, on their dime.

#

Even still. My choices of preferred batteries for home automation are: AA and CR123A

late gate
#

why not 18650 batteries?

undone aspen
#

I've yet to see any device use those, for home automation.

#

But... Why not those? They're effin HUGE!

#

But, I have chargers for them so....

late gate
#

they sell esp boards now with 18650 on the back. very handy for various projects

undone aspen
#

Well, there is that, but, WiFi, ewwww.

#

WiFi on battery, is just.. No thanks.

#

Backup? Sure. Primary? No.

late gate
#

you dont have to use wifi with an esp board though

undone aspen
#

Hmmm, true, There's BLE on ESP32.

late gate
#

if its some kind of automation thing locally

undone aspen
#

Or..

#

A Z-Wave board.

late gate
#

or xbee

#

that can be battery driven too

undone aspen
#

Nah. Z-Wave. No Zigbee thanks. 😄

undone aspen
#

Alrighty, so far so good on the Tenavolts batteries reporting 1.5Vdc as expected. Heck actually a little higher than.

fallow spire
#

Did some troubleshooting today. Turns out I’m using my an old A1 class card for my hass install. Not sure if that’s causing the disconnect issues between Alexa and bulbs, or perhaps the disconnect between wall switches too. Time to do some cloning tomorrow to a spare A2!

#

Looks like alexas inability to find the zigbee stuff goes away when I have a hass instance open on a computer somewhere?

undone aspen
#

Umm, hmmmm.. Odd...

#

Amazon.. Had an issue.... Delivering.... A ring camera. So, they cancelled the shipping and will refund me.. But. it was.. Their own.. shipping company, what the actual frack? LOL

#

Oh. I see what they're trying to do. Only refund me half of what I actually paid? 🤬

fallow spire
#

Yeah I don’t know your locale but in the UK they’re all self employed guys who get paid per delivery and at the moment they seem to be delivering an insane amount of packages a day. I’ve had quite a few arrive on a completely different day and time to what’s quoted haha

undone aspen
#

heh

#

Florida. 🙂

#

They have Mercedes delivery trucks around here. heh

#

But, it never even got origin tracked.

#

Ohhhhhhhhh. NOW I see what nonsense they're doing.

#

They're deducting the "free" Echo Dot for $27.19 I got with the order, from the price I paid for from the Ring camera itself, and are trying to refund me only $57.80, instead, which is absolute bullcrap.

pale eagle
#

he folks, can someone help me out, im running version 0.106.5 and finally implemented my first rest api switch, somehow it tries to install the cloud components and it fails, with the result that my whole home-assistant doesn't start anymore:

Heh. Once again, to the Amazon support, and they did tell me, (first), that they were going to refund me only $61.84, for the "portion" of the Ring+Echo Dot kit. I was like Umm, NO! I don't take kindly to fraud.

undone aspen

Heh

#

I'm just yelling about Amazon's odd frackups. 🙂

#

My new camera however, delayed a week. :/

#

Didn't even bother to do it Prime, to fix their mistake.

hushed basalt
#

Those tenavolt batteries look interesting

undone aspen
#

I know, right?!?

hushed basalt
#

I wouldn't use them in anything that doesn't need 1.5v though

#

Since they're smaller capacity

undone aspen
#

My door lock is at 30% battery now, and still working, so I'm anxious to switch them out for the Tenavolts.

hushed basalt
#

Are they nimh in your door lock?

undone aspen
#

No, Alkaline.

#

2775mAh is lower capacity? hehe

hushed basalt
#

It's not 2775mAH

#

It's 2775mWh

undone aspen
#

The Tenavolts are.

#

Ahhh

#

Hmmm

hushed basalt
#

That's in the cell too

#

So the DC to DC converter would take a chunk of that too

undone aspen
#

Well, now I feel a little bit saddened. LOL

#

That's after the DC to DC conversion.

hushed basalt
#

If you need the 1.5v they'll be great

#

No that's before

#

According to their picture

undone aspen
#

Someone broke into these things and looked at the battery inside.

hushed basalt
#

"2775mwH lithium core"

undone aspen
#

Ahhh yeah. 750mAh, 2.78Wh.

#

heh, actual battery inside is a 13430 3.7V lithium core, so hmmmm...

hushed basalt
#

Urgh I need to put the bins out for collection

#

But it's like 60mph gusts of wind

undone aspen
#

Either way, I got these for my door lock primarily. And so, we'll see how they perform. I'm thinking the Echo Clock I'm getting tomorrow should work just fine with NiMH, as reported by many people so far. It doesn't need the 1.5V * 4. heh

#

I considered getting 4+4 more without the charger, but decided on caution just in case. 🙂

hushed basalt
#

Most things should be fine with NiMH even if the battery discharge shows low because manufacturers are too dumb to have better discharge profiles in their circuitry

undone aspen
#

Oh, I know.

#

My door locks are likely fine, just they eat through NiMH quickly.

#

And it's annoying as hell to replace them with the way they designed their battery access.

#

Kwikset Convert, that is.

#

Three, tiny, screws, take off the whole cover, pull out the battery pack, replace batteries, put back together.

hushed basalt
#

You could bury a rechargeable 5v cell in your door hehe

undone aspen
#

LOL

#

Probably!

hushed basalt
#

And just plug in a phone charger every 6 months

undone aspen
#

There IS enough space.....

#

In the part they made able to be opened without unscrewing anything (if you unscrewed it before), but they didn't bother to make the BATTERY compartment accessible that way, morons.

#

I lost a little respect for Kwikset for that.

#

That, and their loud as hell motor. 🙂

#

My dogs.. They LOVE that motor. To bark furiously at that motor to get it!

hushed basalt
#

One of these and a flat lithium pack

#

Route a recess in the door

#

Underneath the lock

#

Rig it up to the kwikset

undone aspen
#

Possibly,. but could literally bundle it all within the lock and provide a litte access to the charger through the access panel that can be unrestricted (give access to buttons/switches).

undone aspen

@hushed basalt Do you happen to know the module part no for that?

hushed basalt

No idea i just randomly googled lithium 5v

undone aspen

I read the part number off the picture it is an O3962A. 🙂

hushed basalt

There's a trillion different types on ali

#

You might want one with an adjustable DC out

#

Take it to 6v to match 1.5v x 4

undone aspen
#

Ahhh, indeed, true.

hushed basalt
#

You could test if 5v works though

#

That's 1.25v x 4 which is still a partially charged alkaline

#

A bit low

undone aspen
#

Maybe, some day. 🙂

tidal bronze
undone aspen
#

I'd probably want to see if I could get that out of LiP, so it can be charged and used at the same time. 🙂

#

LiPo has 3.7v per cell, so definitely possible.

#

Ugh,. What was even worse about the AmazonBasics NiMH order,... besides being not what I ordered. Pre-Charged - Pack of 16, and not a dang one of them was actually pre-charged as claimed either. .

@junior forge I´m ok with your answer. Thank you. Currently no plans - enough for me to know... I´m asking because I want to replace my old Rpi3 for HA, so will go with RPi4...

Just need to expand it from a 1-gang 2-switch to a 2-gang.

Now the real question is. Should I put a simple "non-smart" humidity sensor switch there when I do that, or should I put a smart switch in there, and humidity sensor somewhere within there, to determine auto-shutoff (or timer based shut off from automation)?

#

lmfao

#

so zwave switch it is

undone aspen
#

The hallway bath was already 2-gang 2-switch, and I found Neutral wires! So, I was giddy and happy just got a humidity sensor in the fan switch. 😄

#

I use Lutron Caseta myself, for pretty much all the light switches.

#

I seriously considered just putting in an On/Off Lutron switch on the exhaust fan, but then I got thinking. The lightbulb icon on those switches don't really say exhaust fan.

#

And after searching for Z-Wave humidity sensors, there wasn't a whole lot of good choices.....

#

So I went with a simple humidity sensor switch that has manual adjustments.

#

Hmmmmm...

#

Blasted. The only recessed Z-wave door sensor I'm finding that takes CR123A battery is Aeotec. :/

Though... That... Might be okay. I've just grown not to trust Aeotec so far.

Somebody breaks in here, the dog will pester them until they finally give up and play with them...

late gate
#

@vast dove can activate a 120db sirene lol

vast dove
#

and?

late gate
#

maybe they will go away

last plaza
#

In Ohio, there was a lady who broke into someone’s house, washed their dishes, pet their dog and watched TV until police came. The owners caught the act on cameras and called cops.

clear ferry
#

@last plaza how dare she?

last plaza
#

We have good burglars 😎

#

lol

#

It was on news all over. Apparently she is mentally challenged. Still got arrested

late gate
#

then the cameras did good since the cops was called

last plaza
#

My cameras would catch them before they enter my house. I prefer it that way.

vast dove
#

So mostly indoor cameras just give you a false sense of security.

late gate
#

well of course I got outdoor cameras too

clear ferry
#

I have presence detection in almost every room, I know if someone is in my house, with both entrances covered by cameras, why would I film people inside my house josepHHM

#

And I have neighbours that would ask questions in 5 minutes if they saw someone else enter my house while I was away

late gate
#

to see what happens for insurance purposes?

last plaza
#

That’s why we have home security system. Really no need for indoor cameras. With home automation, cameras, presence detection and home security we are all set.

clear ferry
#

Indoor cameras is probably my biggest nono

last plaza
#

Some folks prefer indoor cameras. That’s totally fine.

late gate
#

of course. nobody forcing anyone

vast dove
#

For the folks that have indoor cameras, do you tell your guests about them?

late gate
#

@vast dove thats why my cameras as physically turned around

last dirge
#

the only time I had one inside the house is when I had to cover a whole row of windows AND a door and I had no easy way to do it from outside the house

vast dove
#

Please dont tag, this is not IRC.

last plaza
#

When you have friends and family comes over, so you tell them that they are being recorded?

light trout
#

When my camera was in use I had it in a smart outlet they cut the power to it when I was home

late gate
#

nobody is being recorded inside when someone is home

clear ferry
#

Even if they are turned around, do you announce that you have them?

light trout
#

I did

last plaza
#

When my camera was in use I had it in a smart outlet they cut the power to it when I was home
That’s a neat idea!

late gate
#

I dont see why I have to as long as they are not filming

light trout
#

Common courtesy

vast dove
#

For the 3 months of lazyness when you didnt turn them around then?

clear ferry
#

Do they have microphones?

last plaza
#

Common courtesy
Not very common these days.

late gate
#

turned around and disabled

#

no filming, no storing

#

turned around to show they are not pointed towards anyone

clear ferry
#

But they have microphones? That could be turned on without anyone knowing? Since they are turned around?

late gate
#

no

#

not possible

light trout
#

Mine did (netatmo welcome)

last plaza
#

Some of them do.

clear ferry
#

Anything is possible, unless you cut the power

late gate
#

the poe swith turn the power off

last plaza
#

Also, you can’t trust any brand these days.

#

So many creepy videos and incidents online - because folks don’t know how to secure them.

late gate
#

thats why I do those steps, but everyone can have their opinion

#

what I would not have is those home security cameras like verisure where the company can check the stream

last plaza
#

Sure! Your house, your cameras 😝

Questions (beleived to be) related to the HA core, where are those best directed?

There used to be a #core channel, right?

That makes absolutely no sense, but OK! 😄

I remember I saw some guide from a russian guy that modded his system board to catch more comic background radiation so he could get more random numbers from urandom josepHHM

#

Speaking of alarm companies, I wish I could roll my own setup and just send alarms to them

#

Guessing they'll open up for that in 10 years

fathom sparrow
#

bah, i have HA crap I need to do, but it's the boring stuff... so I don't want to do it

clear ferry

Never settle for boring stuff haha

fathom sparrow

that's why this is a never ending project

last plaza
#

Speaking of alarm companies, I wish I could roll my own setup and just send alarms to them
@clear ferry have a sim900 module and roll your own home security. You can have it text you or call you/cops. Make sure you have a battery backup for the device incase of power failures.

#

You can use pre-paid SIM cards in there, you only pay for what you use.

fluid zephyr
#

Nothing wrong, except it lets users do stuff without knowing what they are doing very easily imo
@clear ferry For example -- Today in Portainer, I learned how to not correctly rollback a container -- Lesson includes: Loosing volume data because you just click buttons instead of reading docs

#

I swear I'm not completly useless, I can always be used as a bad example

brisk glen
#

rule number one... have backups

#

rule number 2... verify the backups

#

rule number 3.. do rules 1 and 2 before making changes

fluid zephyr
#

I do have have backup for important stuff -- I should have made one here too but lucky it's not major. -- Just messing with ozwdaemon for the beta Z-Wave integration

#

I lost my Node Names but lucky to at least have a screen shot I can re-create from.

clear ferry
#

@last plaza doesn't work like that outside the us, hence give it ten years haha

The topic of this channel is:

I finally finished this enough for painting.

undone aspen

So, pestering || @forest edge ||?

low harness

Can't wait to have that beast out of my workshop.

light trout
#

No LED's????? 😲

forest edge
#

is that an 8ft ceiling?

low harness
#

What's that in reasonable units? It's just below 2,4 m.

#

So more like 7, I think?

undone aspen
#

7.8ft

forest edge
#

no 2.4 is 8ft

undone aspen
#

Almost 7.9

low harness
#

Wait... It can't be 2,4. That's what we have indoors. It's less than a sheet of plywood.

forest edge
#

8ft is slightly more than 2.4 meter

#

like 2.4384 according to google

low harness
#

It's a wide angle lens though, so it could be hard to understand the size anyway.

undone aspen
#

But... What is it?

low harness
#

And I'm on top of a workbench clinging onto the drill press.

#

It's a bunk bed for the girls

undone aspen
#

Ahhhh, that's what I thought it looked like. 🙂

#

Just had to be sure. 🙂

Which is why some people will always hit their head on the top of the door frame.

I tried to dovetail the steps on the ladder, @unreal orbit. Failed horribly.

i would always prefer inches and feet to measuring contruction than meters and cm

low harness

The rest was done before I got the saw.

unreal orbit

Ah gotcha

Looks great 🎉

undone aspen

It does, actually.

I need to hurry up and start working with my girlfriend's father to make me my own desk. Tired of this particle board crap piece of .....

unreal orbit

I thought it was pretty clearly a bunk bed 😉

I think so too, when I see the photo. Up close it's all just a huge pile of little mistakes.

He's got the tools, I only have some./

Hey! It could've been some unfinished server rack!

🙂

unreal orbit

Ah yes, a server rack with a ladder 🙂

I like seeing what other people call "workshops" around the globe

undone aspen

To get to the top, where all the wires would be, yes!

forest edge

always interesting seeing what solutions people come up with to fix certian things etc

undone aspen

I went to Home Depot today, and they, for the first time I actively went looking for green 12awg green wire, they FINALLY had some.

#

I've been looking for it, for over a year....

low harness
#

Mine is just a garage. I'm planning to lay a floor there when the bed is out. Should make it a bit more cozy.

#

It looks a bit bare in the photo because all the benches are crammed to the back wall.

forest edge
#

@low harness the red thing is a garage door?

#

lol had to "open original" to get a better look

low harness
#

yes

#

The right red thing. The left one is the inside of the main breaker box.

forest edge
#

swinging doors would be better for a shop than a overhead garage door. the track get in the way lol

#

and every shop has a makeshift sawdust collection system made out of a wood hehe

What are those, and why are they fused?

unreal orbit

I think they're LED controllers

fluid zephyr

oh my friends -- those are Mr. Quindors Dig-uno controllers

clear ferry

Pfff just connect it directly to the wemos peepoSmash

#

Looks like an improved version of the espixelstick board though

fluid zephyr

Been there, done that -- want new toys. this is much nicer than anything I could put together 😄 and it's not using a breadboard

I gotta get a picture of what I'm replacing.... please stand by. I think it's worth the laugh
