should have just left hard water going to the water heater so the lime could have kept the hole plugged π€£
Lol
Keep in mind most (all?) tankless won't operate during a power outage
Even if they're gas powered
There's a UPS for that
Ah, good point
Who wants to stay in a house without power anyways
Electric water heaters wonβt work in a power outage either?
No smarts
Yes but they will most likely already be hot
So you can still have a shower before you go to work
Yup
Great idea......heat water year round for the 3-6 power outages

gas water heaters > electric water heaters
I wouldn't be putting anything gas in my house
Tankless are also way more expensive than storage
They last forever though
And not everyone's gas lines are compatible if you have gas
gas owns. except for dryers. gas dryers scare me
And prob not when you start calculating the year round heating of 50 gallons of water
Gas is a huge polluter indoors
Afraid of the RAW POWER?
Plus it's hard to be critical of companies fracking peoples water supplies when you consume their product
I dunno, something about a gas powered dryer just creeps me out. Not sure why other gas appliances don't bother me
@amber bramble ,,you are going to install your own water heater right
When we buy a house ripping out the gas stove and putting in a induction is the first thing we'll do
Induction is nice
Plus a heat pump dryer shits all over whatever the hell a gas dryer is
i had an electric stove for a couple years and hated it
No wet exhaust, low power use, gentle on clothes
probably going to end up putting in a cheap water heater for now just because of budget. if i get 5 years out of it then both kids will be in school so no more $350/wk daycare
@brisk glen do you have things like Google home speakers on a VLAN that still work with home assistant?
I'm probably gonna give it a shot this weekend but am wondering if it's a huge pain or not
Yes, you need a MDNS reflector or proxy
Sounds good, thanks
I believe I saw that as an option on my ER-x
I'm guessing the idea would be to make it so that they can communicate with anything in the VLAN and home assistant but nothing else on the LAN
Will be easy to do with firewall rules
Yeah I'm getting more familiar with the firewall terminology
LAN in rules
Source and destination were a little confusing when talking about WAN IN rules but I now understand that
Iβll give you examples when I get home in 3 hours
Thank u
@scenic radish be warned tho, when you vlan, you share that 512 Mbit full duplex backbone
Should be fine till you have a few ip cameras
Why we recommend the next step up from a edge router x
Then you get a full Gbit full duplex backbone
My router probably has like 10Mbit backbone haha
It cost $30 AUD off Ebay 6 years ago
Good to know, I just have one Wyze cam right now
And I could always knock that down to 720p
Or reduce bitrate. It's running the dafang custom firmware
Just to confirm
When you have different vlans your router needs to 'route' between them
questiion mark
By default they can still communicate, but that's why you set firewall rules
I thought between vlans was up a layer to whatever routers do yeah...
Things like mDNS won't work by default without mDNS reflection
My barber called, and I have a haircut appointment tomorrow!
S U P E R E X C I T E D! π
Oh they been closed there?
my wifes been begging to cut mine lol
Skala .....DONT DO IT
lol Ohio is back on business!
haha
so how that goes down
Skala also.....DONT DO IT
@green inlet if I donβt, then Iβd look like your profile pic π
Let it go.
lol
All the cool kids are doing it
Oh right Ohio has been doing pretty well for the USA right
So far so good!
still 17 times the deaths of this whole country damn
Heh
Dangit, I have so many Echo devices now that I actually have 2 spares!
Well, now I guess... It's time to put them.... IN the bathrooms.
i wanted to put a couple wall mounted tablets in the bathrooms like i have in the rest of the rooms to show weather, news, and calendar info while we're getting ready but my wife keeps shooting the idea down
I am with her
Why? Too creepy to be able to say., "Alexa, add body soap to my shopping list?"
I mean you are on your phone anyway if you in there
I was going to say toilet paper, but.. π
Yeah, but my phone doesn't have a "Alexa, ......" voice activation.
I use the heck out of it these days. π
I mean, it's easy enough to put the echo's in the bathrooms to some extent. And just turn on the DND option.
What I really need, though, is to get Alexa integrated with MY calendar.
Well, Echo Show 8 in living room, Show 5 in office, Echo Spot in bedroom (previously in office), and echo Dot 3's all around the rest of the house. π
Need to figure out a decent way to get battery backup to the Echo Spot in the bedroom though. Might just have to get another UPS.
Heh, it was funny though.
This early afternoon, USPS came to deliver one package. I was expecting at LEAST 2, but would've been happy to receive 3 (one they misdelivered to someone last Sunday), but the redelivery never happened. I asked the guy before he got into his truck. "Is there only 1? I was expecting 2, per USPS Informed Delivery." he claimed he only had the one, and rushed to hurry off. heh
Around 5:30pm, however, same guy came back. Delivered the second package afterall.
I do like these ecolink sensors though! They did a good job on the very basic design concept of how to make them easy to put up.
At the same time though, in the Garage door tilt sensor, and now the door contact sensor, the double-sided tape they've been giving has been... rather small.
So much that I feel it;s important to cut it in half, myself and use it for the top and bottom points of the mounting plate. heh
Get free shipping on qualified Double Sided Tape Tape or Buy Online Pick Up in Store today in the Paint department.
π
Here's my janky job putting the new access point in its place
It's in a closet, so not normally visible
mount a shelf below the hole and mount it to the self? or i bet they make right angle brackets
ah nm, closet
I also used double-sided tape to test that location. Well, that sucker is on there good so I guess I won't bother with the mounting bracket lol
yeah, dont knock it ifi t works
Yeah I can't complain. You don't ever see it anyway
poe swtich or injector?
Injector
i love poe
It's great
Poe rawks
i have one of those dongles that splits out poe to eth+usb for a rpi
Oooo
love it
It's powered by the PoE passthrough from my ER-x
I was happy to discover I can power the ER-x with the PoE injector that came with the AP, and then power the AP with the ER-x
So I didn't need to buy a better PSU for the router
the erx runs off poe?
It can
ha thats awesome
Or an AC adapter
Lmao......
P E R P E T U A L E N E R G Y
In this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!
I canβt even feed myself
NUMBER 6 WILL SHOCK YOU!
69 THINGS THE GOVERNMENT DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT ENERGY
i hate the current state of reporting and "journalism"
5 things you didnt know about teslas
- battery powered!
- no gas!
That reminds me, is it safe to wash electric cars?
yes
so's your face

awww
congrats?
You two need a room?
Sure, wanna join?
hey now
Are you bringing cookies?
is it possible to be off topic in lounge?
Double stuffed
Yep, talk about HA
good point!
Heh, mounting door sensors on door moulding that's curved, is a PITA. LOL
lol, use a file?
π€¦ββοΈ
etch the door!
Heh, I thought about using a chisel actually.
if it's a hall effect sensor, the alignment isn't that critical
yeah, I know. π
I ended up just using command strip on the sensor side, to mount it, for now.
The screws that these ecolink door/window sensors come with are huge.
i say that every time for command strip usage....still there
hehe
3M tape is no slouch
Yeah, command strips are quite impressive... Sometimes.
Though, I may get more permanent tape tomorrow.
Hey look...my favorite Georgian @last dirge
Should pick up a roll of auto grade tape and go to town
heh. It was funny though when I got the ecolink garage door tilt sensor, and notice it had a mechanical tilt component in it.
@wet pilot 3M VHB
Tilt it next to your ear, and you can hear the ball slide through the component
heh
B A L L E F F E C T
sigh ,curse you myq api
heh
They on v20 now?
βοΈ π€’
not sure, just noticed my integration was throwing some errors
I to notice the MyQ integration, tends to... Break at times.
you misspelled all the
Cat and mouse fight
oh i know why. im dumb
Heh, did my garage door tilt sensor throw you off tilt? π€£
Though, hmmm.
One thing. I have to say is rather moronic.. and yet funny.
The way Ring suggests you to install /their/ door sensors is to always put the sensor itself, on the part the moves (the door itself for example), and put the magnet on the frame.
i wonder why? my inclination would the other way around
Exactly. Because a sensor on the door itself, one can easily trick that with the simple magnet on the door trick.
With it on the door moulding. That's much thicker area, and much harder to do that.
As in, you're practically guaranteed to break contact even for just a split second, enough to trigger it.
For all the burglars that bring π§²
yeah, I know. It's super common. π
I've been warned about the burgulars that are going to spoof a handshake with my zwave lock and let themselves in that way
Heh, that's very difficult to do.
Or just throw a rock through your window. Trust me....
I get that all the time. I laugh
Well, if they do the rock thing, at least all my abundance of echo's around the house will get the glass break trigger. π
Or just kick in your door
Oh, kicking in my door would be quite noticable around the neighbors. Because, it would take several times, IF they could even manage to do it.
6 inch screws on both hinge and strike plates, and not just 1, but 2 per, all the way into the cinder block. π
Maybe not 6 inch, but.. π
Yeah probably like 3 inch
yeah.
Which is good, and recommended
That what she said
snicker
Wut?
...thats what she said?
Still.. Ring sensors. And that's what Ring themselves recommend! like, seriously. Just like they call SMS 2FA "enhanced security", like, seriously guys, what the actual frack?
:suns out guns out
"Enhanced Security" is their email server using TLS to send me a 2FA code to my mail server over TLS. Which they DO! So that's a hell of a lot more secure than SMS ever can be.
E N H A N C E
Love it
|| Grand Sauce gives you the poops @scenic radish ||
Nope
Anyone working on a trip wire integration. Now that is something we could use
Hmmmm.. Why do I recognize that Enhance clip?
HAss notification.....your trip wire has been activated. Boom
can't see nothing lol

SMS or 2FA would be fine
Now, ONE thing I will say is, HOLY CRAP Amazon/Alexa! When they finally made it so you can open/close a garage door with a code to allow the opening, I nearly cried!
@green inlet You must not understand just how vulnerable the SMS network really is.
why do you need a new switch plate?
To cover up this abomination
Caulk it
looks like a standard hoa ran condo outlet to me
Caulk fixes everything
i hope thats all low voltage
It;'s true!
Then I ran Ethernet for the new AP and also a USB cable with another radio
It is @wild grove
you can buy those at like lowes, homedepot for prob less than what amazon wanted lol
I used ... Oh what kind of caulk was that... Very very STRONG caulk, for water...
@forest edge I'm not gonna go to the home depot just for that
marine caulk! For my shower drain pipe, because, the drain pan itself leaks.
lulz
isnt that the one thing a drain pan shouldnt do?
(and, it's all ceramic tile)
Coax, Ethernet, USB π
like panera running out of bread
Exactly, paperclip, but the seller of the house broke the contract and didn't actually fix it. And suing them after the fact, they were GONE!
sucks
Biggest of oofs
So, yeah, marine caulk. until I can afford to fix it proper, Which requires. ripping out the all-original tile, on the floor, walls, and the pan, and re-doing it. All.
Kids these days @forest edge
yea screw that
Yeah. That.. I would have a professional do.
might as well do the whole bathroom while you're at it
Just wing it
Oh boy
Hold on. I am missing something. You need a wall plate an Home Depot is not an option
Wut?
Home Depot and Loweβs has wall plates that can handle 6 different inputs
Ethernet, cable, phone, pretty much anything you can think of
SMS vulnerabilities
Yeah I don't know of a coax, Ethernet, USB combo
Blank plates with snap ins
keystone
Didn't wanna fuss, I bought that one shown above with the bristles
Yea. Cribs nailed it. Keystone is the brand
Here we go: https://imgur.com/a/LZ6RCLa
What the actual fuck is that supply line
Heh
haha
I did say......
That one pipe going off to the right, goes to the toilet to supply it.
The rest. What the actual fuck?
I just updated to 0.110.1 expecting shit to hit the fan
It that your house?
Yes.
and... it was uneventful
You are a code inspectors nightmare I recon.
Oh, definitely.
Several of those are capped off
Damn, a keystone plate with adapters for coax, Ethernet, and USB would be $7.75 shipped :/
The thing with bristles I bought was $5.5
But the keystone would look hella tite
Oooo
Added bonus....corona virus possible
Lmao
Actually I need to fix the caulk on the tub so maybe I'll swing by there 'morrow
Night night
Question: so i'm redoing my linux server. Currently, it's on Ubuntu Desktop and I'd like to move to Arch. What root filesystem do you guys recommend? Btrfs, ext4, or XFS?
Move /to/ Arch? But.. But why? Usually people move AWAY from Arch. Not TO it.
It's much leaner that a full desktop distro
And, if you're asking that question right off, you should not use Arch.
No, no it's not.
then don't install the desktop variants of distros
Seriously.. Simple.. π
Arch? Your asking for trouble, Even people with AGES of experience in Linux, can find Arch to be the worst thing in the world.
Check out the letterbox my grandfather in law made
Better off learning a Linux distro that actually is or resembles a enterprise distro like rhel-centos, suse-opensuse, Debian etc @undone aspen atleast it is useful real life experience
Do it
Also go to the discord linux and tell them you use debian over ubuntu they'll love it
@last dirge my simple 200liter catch
@ocean mirage but it hasn't been updated in years

Me right now, designing some greenhouse stuff in my head while conducting other business
@ocean mirage been banned from any more discords lately
Just curious
You could post that hannah montanna distro in the "linux" discord see how it goes down
Building more stuff
If I were seeking to get banned there are many things I could do, go to the steam discord and post about gog, or go to a right wing discord and say something vaguely inclusive
Or just come here and say java is king
Java? I prefer Bali

Where's the openhab channel here?
Where is the smartthings one?
Actually I did get banned from a server now but I was only there like two days
and my friend got banned and I was like "yo why" and then I got banned
Trolls often act in pairs (in David Attenboroughs voice)
Hah
I actually do a quite good sir Attenborough impersonation
I ain't got solar panels
atx sends random pictures into chat as if we knew wtf we were looking at. best guess is making a coffin for his zigbee devices
what happened to the whole cloud lamp project? did you get 60% done and move on to the next project?
Has there been a change in how HA restarts?
It seems extremely fast
Almost as if nothing happens
Might be a good idea to read the release notes?
Ah, my assumption was that "Speed!" was a new integration
I just skipped to breaking changes, to see if I could update
My bad
Figured it wasn't reloading, now I used docker restart homeassistant just to fully force it, and it's in safe-mode
It wasn't restarting after all
@forest edge my mental disorders prefer me doing six projects at once
And ludeeus promoted me to developer yesterday, so talk to the hand
Heh. Developer

Lol.. speed my ... Ha takes at least two minutes to handle itself. I need to get a clean start again. But setting up the integration again is such a pain.
You just need to get rid of your shitty ones@hearty depot
I think HA is mostly pissed Blut the 20 offline esphome boards
And ludeeus promoted me to developer yesterday, so talk to the hand
@clear ferry oh? was there really that much of a need of a bad music scraper?

@limpid wind solar is fun, but with smart home Im happy to not having solar at the new house. Too much interference with zigbee, wifi and bt with solar
I don't have solar panels
No my energy providor pays me sometime when they need rid of energy
in half an hour I am going round my house and turning everything on
lol
I dont have the chance even since im having 7-8000w overproduction
not enough devices to spend it all lol
you have a rough idea on when you get money back on investment?
for me, never as im selling the house, but it takes around 20 years so not really the best investment
no, never
its such a huge intereference with solar
like every panel got an optimizer with zigbee, so I got 45 zigbee and wifi ap devices chatting on the roof
it just kill the smart home
Meh I could live without a smart home if I had no choice, woud'nt bother me
Did the solar add any value to property to reep some back?
On paper yes, it should, but during my selling experience it has absolutely no value on sale
fair enough I get that, its almost like an added bonus
installing solar cost around 20k USD
but during sale its been little to no interest in that its solar on the roof
good to hear though, I have no plans on getting solar anytime in the future but its intresting to hear that aspect
but when thats said Im selling at the worst time ever cause of corona
yeah, I am buying too but held off and someone else jumped in and bought
Im not bothered too much though as I don't want to be rushed
not to mention most solar panels only last around 30 years which is the same as a roof replacement
Yeah it seems to be very location specific if its worth it - costs of installing - how much they pay for overproductions - how hot climate country you are in
if you can get good on all 3 of them ticks it might pay off in 10 years.. I guess
and the inverters are around 8 years. thats around 2k USD just for them
so the investment is hard to justify
@late gate that's long, my calculations were 7 years and $15k investment
@clear ferry yeah on paper its fast, but remember you should not calculate a yield over 50% of reported power, issues with shadow, heat, inverter issues, rainy days etc
With the summers we've had here the last 5 years in very optimistic
I just cant tell you how much I regret installing those panels lol
I might do it when I buy a new house
just do NOT buy solis inverters or tigo optimizers
if you do I will come to your house and yell at you, deal? :p
@clear ferry solar should work very well for you considering most the images I've seen of norway has house spaced apart and with your midget trees you should be golden. well as long as you are not being shadowed by some mountain lol
@forest edge but half the year without sun
or high enough sun to yield power for panels
just talking from experience
@fathom sparrow Crapsman table saw is on sale. Not a big of it, I prefer Milwaukee or DeWalt. Comes with stand, half the price.
At lowes
@clear ferry my not so simple 2090L catch
@clear ferry what are you building? Bench?
@fathom sparrow Crapsman table saw is on sale. Not a big of it, I prefer Milwaukee or DeWalt. Comes with stand, half the price.
@last plaza got a link? Thought sears went out of business??
Craftsman use to actually be a decent brand. they were the first to ever offer lifetime replacement on hand tools
I still use the lifetime replacement. Their basic tools are still good imo
truth it they are all made in the same warehouse these days tho
lowes is an official retail for craftsman now petro, don't need a sears
Well, when I say still use, that was 8 years ago when I last did the lifetime replacement
Ah, Iβll check it out
Is there a channel for HACS? I upgraded last night to the latest HA core and the latest HACS, and on every page, I see the HACS background graphic
Update and clear cache
You mean just browser cache?
Yes
you been hacs
#integrations-archived though
As useful as HACS is, that graphic is WAAAAY too big.
he's got @clear ferry in the process of shrinking it down using his famous complete a project to 60% then start a new project method.
hopefully they have them in stock and shipping....
although most portable table saws don't support dado blade set... my DeWalt doesn't... there are some after market stuff, but haven't tried
@forest edge I once took advantage of lifetime replacement - got some broken craftsman tool from garage sale for $1, walked in, exchanged for new π
I think that's why they filed bankruptcy π
they told me at the sears store when they were doing that everything must go sale that the owner didn't like the midwest or east coast so wanted to move sears into more of a local store on the west coast
sears pre-2000's was pretty awesome. shocked at just how much stuff my grandfather had that came from sears. hell my double pane windows in my house came from sears lol
contractor saws suck
a lot of people like Milwaukee these days. and Ryobi is literally in the same factory which is funny yet people who like the one, hate the other
I donβt hate Ryobi - I have a few of them, work great.
I had a ryobi tablesaw a while back
I am very curious what these new walmart tools are
Hammer, or something i like is the name
*think
What table saw do you have/use @last dirge
I made a bunch of jigs for my table saw, wouldnβt use without those jigs. They keep me safe and gives me more accurate cuts.
it kicked ass
As soon as I buy, I replace them with better blades. Otherwise they are crap
I hate my ryobi tools
@hushed basalt there's actually a difference in how tools are made per country too in most cases. which is nuts
I've put Freud Thin Kerf Blade on my table saw - it cuts like butter and no burn marks! Just the blade was $120 when I bought it 4+ years ago.
what saw?
DeWalt Table Saw
I don't have the SawStop or bigger ones - space problem in the garage
I'd love to move into a smaller house with bigger garage/barn some day
Skala, did ytou see my pm?
table saws always gavve me the heebie jeebies
@fading zodiac sorry - not a big on PMs, I get way too many
Ah
I use a circular saw for all my "table saw" needs lol
I was asking about the has bot
@last dirge here is what I got
my dotnet isnt that great
So i'm looking for a pointer to change some stuff.
If you point me in the right direciton, i'm happy
contractor saws are scary
ok... I will be free after 11 AM EST - got a call I need to jump into @fading zodiac
what was that game called you made?
Carrom Board
you shared your woodworking project a while back
yup -
@last plaza all is good. just let me know in pm:)
I need to get a torque wrench - where I set pre-defined torque setting... the bike requires certain things to be tightened at a fixed NM.
good luck, looked at those last year and it seems like tools made these days are all junk lol
Price range of torque wrenches varies greatly. You mostly get what you pay for though
I have a delta Rockwell table saw. Some dude in my are was selling it several years ago. He did an awesome job putting it in a cabinet. Donβt use it much but when I do it is awesome
I think they are supposed to be really good saws but maybe not π€·ββοΈ
nothing wrong with delta. i have a drill press that is a delta rockwell
thing keeps on ticking
found a couple, still looking for deals. Not in a hurry.
How much are you looking to spend?
$100 max π
Yea, pretty cool. It is belt driven. Also has a router built in. I sold my router to some dude for the same price I paid for the entire saw/router/table
do not get any that are digital
Not all digital are bad, you just can't cheap out
Delta products are really good... especially 14 inch good old band saws. they last generations!
I would not put any faith in long term in anything like that that has an lcd screen lol
Only thing I am worried about is parts but havenβt had to even look
you can still get parts in so many places - trick is maintenance...
Maintenance as in cleaning out the saw dust bin? Cause that is all I have done. Does it need oil?
Maybe should try and find a manual I guess
yup - oiling, and cleaning frequently
Anything with moving metal parts needs oil occasionally
nah
*needs. Such a subjective term π€£
the motor and arbor on that thing definitely use sealed bearings
You talking to me Brian?
Even sealed bearings fail eventually
most of the tools that deal with dust are usually sealed well, but I don't take things for granted - frequent inspection is all it needs to prevent a big problem down the line
frequent inspection
ye
how low/high do you need it to go?
10" should be good
no, torque-wise
I got to check the service manual - assuming about 50nm max
some of them requires you to apply 35nm, and then loosen and set it back at 8-9nm. I found that interesting!
@forest edge bunnings, which is the dominant hardware store in straya by a landslide, and the exclusive au ryobi dealer , actually has their own SKUs for all the big tool brands
that looks really nice @last dirge
Can't use their price guarantee if the ryobi/makita drill is one model number different from the generic one and uses cheaper parts
Park makes really good tools
yep
@hushed basalt you should look at the tools the guys on The Skid Factory use
I don't remember the company offhand but they switched completely to them from Milwaukee
@last plaza where i buy any tools that needs to last longer than a summer lol https://clarkstool.com/
That is pretty standard with the big box stores in US also BadTelco
I am not sure what tools to get
π
I always though dewalt was superior to makita and ryobi but you guys seem to think differently
alot of people like sk
@forest edge I don't blame them π
I'll have to check out toolpro
Ryobi stuff is so unbalanced in my hand
And a lot bigger and heavier than it should be for the power class
home assistant segfaulted again π
details at 10.
(or in #672217570283094017 now)
I always though dewalt was superior to makita and ryobi but you guys seem to think differently
@green inlet there was dewalt pre-bought out by black decker and dewalt post-bought out by black and decker lol
So I guess we are in the post-bought out era now π€£
not too many companies are safe from eventually turning to dog poo after being bought out and forced into suckatude
lol
used an impact driver for the first time a few months ago. favorite tool ever
I have come to the conclusion that spending good money on power tools is just worth it. I may not use them tons but when I do, you want them to just work
Tediore hands were made for keyboards and ladles not manly tools lol
Porque no dos?
ew that wrench has crud on it, get it away from my Grand Sauce!
I miss when power tools had metal bodies and only a hot and neutral wire lol
used an impact driver for the first time a few months ago. favorite tool ever
@scenic radish make sure you get impact βratedβ bits on it.
Otherwise they will break and explode
well.. i mean "chinesium" bits will explode but most decent bits won't just insta explode lol
er lol bit, I mean sockets
some of the stuff from Hazard Fart isn't horrible
check out AvE's tool reviews on YouTube before buying
Bits that aren't impact rated are too hard
Therefore too brittle
Fantastic standard sockets would make awful impact sockets
most sockets are fine with impact up to a point
obviously depends on their quality
but up to about 100 lb/ft most should be fine
lol ave, that dude and his slang for a lack of better word
I cannot believe these republicans are trying to pass laws per state that makes it impossible for any suits to be brought to businesses or health care faculties over covid lol
NO HOME ASSISTANT SUPPORT HERE (look at the other channels for that). NO POLITICS OR RELIGION!
BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
is covid politics the same as normal politics tho? i mean..
Eh, it's politics... let's keep it away
these republicans is probably the hot phrase in your message
You should have ended with an βamenβ just to cover all basis
π
these republicansis probably the hot phrase in your message
@unreal orbit lol probably but I would havve saidthe democratesif it were them.. hell I should have saidthese norwegians
Anyone actively using wind speed with their automations ? What weather service ?
Sorry Tinkerer, it is Friday and I am being forced to deal with an inordinate amount of stupid people in real life
Anyone actively using wind speed with their automations ? What weather service ?
@tidal bronze β
On the bright side, it's Friday. Last day of the week you have to deal with stupid people (hopefully)
@tidal bronze you mean like how darksky displays it?
You're all good @green inlet π
And for three whole days
@last plaza which service.
darksky for now
Oh yeah I forgot monday is a holiday
Is the update interval good enough?@last plaza
yup - very good so far
isn't it every 30 seconds?
Are you averaging for x minutes or taking as it is
also depends on use case - I use to check if it is a good weather to fly drones, ...etc
speaking of which, i haven't crashed my mini drone into my wall in a while
time to up it then
@last plaza
I thought you got those for kids π€
should see how much that drone can carry. nothing beats drone delievered ham sandwhich
actually it's super sensitive. you can barely brush the drone against something and it stops
i don't have kids, i bought them for myself lol
@clear ferry nice job!!! flower bed?
@scenic radish you are the kid
Use a Harris not a drone for brushing purposes @scenic radish
@last plaza tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers, etc are going in there
hey, my grandpa has a slot car track that he uses all the time
sweet
guess it runs in the family
Slot cars! That brings back memories
@clear ferry is that beach wood? or pine?
yes
weird color for pressure treated
What is it pressure treated with? Isn't green and indication of arsenic?
Ah copper arsenate
That's the norm here
never seen pressure treated with that little of green lol
in the US they've not used arsenic in treating wood in a long time
@clear ferry some folks do not use pressure treated wood for vegetable gardens due to the chemicals used
it's fine as long as it's not arsenic treated
it's funny you say aubergine and cucumber
hope so - if you trust them that much, go ahead π
and not aubergine and courgette
Not heard of issues here, I'm going to coat it with plastic on the inside anyway to preserve the wood
I have some old Creosote treated wood at the farm and all the fence posts have been treated with it and all of it still holding up lol
great, now you are going to add polymers to the chemicals in the treated wood - who knows what that brings π
would you look at that yard
I like the roof tiles!
would someone mind taking a look at the two firewall rules i have set for my new IoT VLAN?
I like the roof tiles!
@last plaza kind of curious about that metal under it
it's simple so i want to make sure i'm not missing something
probably has some anchors to keep the tiles in place
I dunno, looks like the metal is under the entire roof and the tiles are stuck to it somehow
some sort of anchors
but i keep getting distracted by the trampoline and envisioning atx going in there evvery night to release stress lol
Norwegian Technology
@scenic radish not sure what firewall you use - mine is GUI, and I don't have to write any code
I don't use edge router π¦ maybe @wet pilot or @tidal bronze
I just pinged them... didn't I?
.irc @last plaza
@last plaza Discord isn't like IRC, you don't have to tag people on every response. Keep in mind that every time you tag somebody, they get a notification ping. That can very quickly become annoying and people may block you.
haven't really had the time
π
The Norwegian roof tiles are just laying on the roof, they are held in place by weight as they are made of stone @last plaza @forest edge
@scenic radish ?
@clear ferry so under them your whole roof is covered with metal sheeting?
@tidal bronze ?
@forest edge no, just wood and a membrane cover
really, that looks like metal lol
That's just the gutters
Tonight at 11, Norway gets hit by first ever Tornado. Roof Tiles liter the entire country side.
well for anyone who might see it, basically i have an IN rule set for the VLAN interface that allows traffic to my server but drops traffic to anywhere else on the trusted LAN. default rule is "allow"
anybody found something that's reliable at tracking energy use on a whole circuit?
basically for stuff like my google home speakers that i want to have internet access but only have the ability to talk to my server and the other devices on the VLAN
clamp-based maybe
Held in place by weight? Thatβs odd. Guess you donβt get on your roof to do any maintenance
@scenic radish where's @brisk glen when you need him amirite?
π
@scenic radish looks like you have done it right, that's the basic premise. You can also do 2 x iot vlans also group devices for ease of making rules.
awesome, thanks. took me a while to get the IN, OUT, and LOCAL rules straight lol
Yep little confusing on direction as I mentioned earlier π
When you get a work tasking from a co-worker that should have come from your boss, and you provide the response to your boss and she is like, βwhat is this?β
I run 1 IOT vlan that strictly MQTT (1883) only nothing else for all the esp stuff.
ah interesting
i also have a NoT IN rule that allows locally-controlled devices full LAN access but blocks internet access
lots of packets being dropped from devices that can't phone home lol
poor things
then your phone bill arrives and is rather high
do you think they're scared? am i a monster?
The most locked down for me is the camera vlan
yeah i might throw my cam on a VLAN, but it's a wyze cam with the dafang firmware installed, so it's not directly externally accessible
Anything I flash with custom stuff goes in restricted as well. π
what i'd like to do is set it to use my router as an NTP server
I am not sure it is the right way to go about it but it was easier for me to create firewall groups and use firewall rules on er-x
then i could completely restrict its internet access
why i run chrony
groups are the way to go. I use it to test stuff like routing a device through PIA etc. Makes it very easy.
@green inlet we only get chimney sweeps and antennas in the old days
@clear ferry whats the life expectancy of your roof?
In Norway? 300 years
being stone, is it forever with replacements here and there or what
In Norway? 300 years
@tidal bronze so the hobbits who dwelled there before atx had it installed?
Jep
I mean....that roof should last forever. Just odd that it is just laying up there and nothing moves it
gonna install chrony on my server, thanks for the tip sonoma
but one day, hurricane, or tornado or even sharknado will arrive in norway
Could you imagine if the sub whatever wore out in the middle of the night
@scenic radish may as well put the server to more use lol
hey now
i mean it's up 24/7 anyways
yeah for sure
Gives new meaning to the old penalty of stoning
@clear ferry need to have your wife take a picture of you on that trampoline so we got more material to tease you with lol
so how is 0.110 treating everyone?
@forest edge 30+ years, mine is 32 so far
@shy comet outside of the roku integration being broken for roku tv and needing to update any custom cards it seems to be okay on my test instance
that has to be a big + cause 30 is way too short for stone lol
our asphalt shingles are 30-35
metal roofing here is 70+
It will last for 40-50 but we usually replace it before that for aesthetic
@scenic radish damn really? are you using stream?
Yeah I am actually
theres a PR to bump the library for 0.110.2
its on 7.0.1 so its going ot bump to 8.0.1 which apparently has proper binaries
jumping to #integrations-archived
@clear ferry aesthetic? you mean cause it turns green and brown from the moss and mold? lol
Usually not, we treat it with stuff that makes the moss fall of and not stick
Or the smooth ones that don't stick anything
how has any of those not hit someone in the head?
Doesn't happen
The lower one is held in place with the weight of all the ones over it
@forest edge that was a real protip with chrony
camera is now restricted to LAN only and can still sync its time
cool

so i think the main reason i want ipv6 to be more heavily adopted is that you don't need to deal with NAT with ipv6
to have the elusive open NAT on xbox i need to open 8 ports
I just dropped xbox at this point
it boggles my mind that they don't have this sorted out, even an api to move menus and such
ehh oh well. i have the ports opened and firewall rules to drop any connections it might try to make to my trusted LAN
am I too old when someone put out "im looking for a small house / garden job" on facebook, I reply I have a painting job, and get reply with a thumbs up im not really sure what that means :p
Maybe they just didn't know what to say
maybe im just a bit too old finding it less polite than a thank you, but maybe not for me reply
Better than π
haha :p
I really need to complain home assistant cant make an automation to paint my house. Its not a smarthome before it can self renovate
Lmao if only
oh you didnt :p
I have, but never write anything so I dont really need it. But I use it for some 3d printing groups etc
AWWW THE ZIGBEE!
whats that lol?
nice but i thought WWLLN is no longer working?
there was a PR to remove it cuz the api is no longer working rihgt?
Noooooo
hmm seems i need a stronger stepper motor for my patio awning.....not sure if a NEMA 17 will be strong enough though im using a 28pyj or whatever lol
nice, i ended up making separate a separate firewall policy for the IoT VLAN interface in the IN direction. default action ACCEPT with two rules:
Allow connections to my server (10.0.0.2)
Drop connections to any other device on the trusted LAN (10.0.0.0/24)
and then another LOCAL rule on the IoT VLAN interface with default action DROP
oh right, i have that group set up, i'll switch to that
does what i have sound right?
Drop connections to any other device on the trusted LAN (10.0.0.0/24) and then another LOCAL rule on the IoT VLAN interface with default action DROP
wut
why not deny all local lans?
i switched it to that
lol
not sure why i didn't have it that way in the first place lol
you might want my first rule
Allow All Established and Related Sessions
that lets me access let say my cameras web interface
@clear ferry looks great.
@clear ferry needs more LSD
IPsec, what is this? 2008?
this is what allows shit like homekit cameras to work
@clear ferry notsalgic. Im still using windows 3.11 for workgroups as my firewall
I don't have wireguard
WG is the shit.
Openvpn is still preferable over IPsec tbh
Meh
wireguard is da best
Shit just works.
hard call between wireguard and zerotier one for me
also it looks like i'd need to add a rule to allow connections to my phone because if i block all connections to RFC1918 it's not visible in the cast menu
mDNS reflection is enabled, home assistant can control it
@scenic radish .... you are missing rules
established/related that you mentioned?
ah ok
it cant talk back
let it talk back if you talk to it first
that will solve 99% of your issues and having to keep dealing with the firewall
is it any official statements if HA would go for a better relational database structure for better db performance. The database today is not really optimal
yep that did it, thanks
@late gate stop storing the DB on a SD card?
@brisk glen I was thinking more about the structure itself. even storing to mysql the structure is not optimal for performance
oh boy, the database wars... plus licensing wars.
but isnt ha just storing json blobs in the database now? would it not be better with a structured table and relation setup?
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
The problem is, SQLite is the minimum standard because it doesn't require anything else
so I get it the database "problem" is that keeping it simple with sqlite
json is used because it's easy to stick every entity type in there and that's how the state machine keeps things
but performance wise its not the best though, or am I wrong?
DB Performance? No. Everything else performance? Yes
most people who complain about the performance are on raspis
dont get me wrong, im not complaining
just curious about why not using the real power of databases has been used. maybe no need, fair enough
Because it's impractical
SQLite (via SQLAlchemy) is the baseline, and it needs to store arbitrary JSON
PostgreSQL is the obvious choice, but ... it's not an option
you can always ship stuff off to grafana if you want to use a "real DB"
but the overhead of running a RDBMS on top of hass would push this even further outside of what people are comfortable with
influx. grafana is a visualization tool
whatever π
yeah I do that
you know what I meant
Thats what I understand too, having to setup a database would add another complexity step
also, there's no real need
if you want to do more in-depth stuff with the database you can, you just have to ship it out of hass
anybody want a GlobalCache device?
I'm going through a bunch of stuff I've got sitting around
these have been chillin new in box for years
I don't think I ever plugged them in
I have flashbacks of another vender...
you should get that checked out
it will be good they said... it will work they said
well.... home assistant is a better homekit streamer than homebridge
its like 8 seconds faster with my rstp stream
Hi ! sorry to dropby quickly like that, but i can't have to leave quickly. Does anyone have a good video or reading on when to use which type of power type in automation ? (Real, Apparent, Reactive) i've read a lot about what each kind is, but i don't see when i should use which value
@last dirge I have boxes like that too. Must give it away, better than throwing it away.
why is the left female and right male...?
(although that looks like a female with a double-sided male adapter in it)
you can connect strings together
ah, so one is for actual power connection and the other is for connecting another strip?
i would've assumed that's done through soldering them or something of the sort
?
I don't really have much of a choice on connectors as these are being connected inside a PC motherboard
which is basically only 4-pin GRB
What channel to ask about HA and VM's? Thanks
If you mean #330944238910963714 in a VM see #330944238910963714
insert wiseass about supervising a vm here
I wonder if you could run something like Xen inside Docker... π€
Moving VM from one pc to another and now not going https.
Hi guys... Does anyone know of a discord channel for ESPhome? I cant find any...
ESPHome is a system to control your ESP8266/ESP32. You can find their documentation here, and get help here in the #diy-archived channel. They have their own Discord server too.
I would be down for that discord also. π
Right there π
Thanks mate...!
Thanks
Just to know, how long your HA installations takes to reboot ?
Mine is taking way longer than 5min

48 seconds from I press the restart button
Also, the alexa_media and built-in meteo (metno) returned errors, but spotify integration work well so I assume my Internet connection is not the problem

In what section I should post ?
It will be the power in
@brisk glen thanks for the help, got all my speakers/TVs on the VLAN and working
didn't even need to manually configure in home assistant, i'm guessing because of the mDNS repeater
correct π
now i just have to move my thermostat which is connected via homekit controller to the VLAN
I think I have the best guest network name
Best part is the nearest chipotle is like 5 minutes away
not Corona-5G?
5G CELL TOWER MAX OUTPUT
Atxybyea the linux discord mods are ragging on your sweet debian
the Linux discord?
Yeah they're very precious about their "official" status
ie they registered it first
Discord GNU/Linux
Noticed this at the store yesterday:
Sweet corn: contains added sweetener
Supersweet corn: does not contain added sweetener

It's the mods that are always online too you have to worry about
Time to troll
Red flag they live in a basement and stay awake 22 hours a day on a computer
.... You're online a fair bit Tediore
You're on fire rn
Hmmmm.
Anyone.. How would you make a make-shift wedge you could temporarily mount on the wall to test for and get the best angle needed for a motion sensor?
carefully
Actually, very carefully.
I am guessing that the height of the motion sensor has more affect than the angle.
You probably want to keep it straight on the wall and adjust the height.
Except that he wants an adjustable wedge
Just some cardboard folded in half then
And tape it in position
Velcro would help if you have some
Attach male velcro on both insides of the wedge then use some scrap fabric as a strap
That you can move to adjust the angle
Skalalalalalalavala
This is what you need. It removes so easy without a scratch. It has good holding power too!
$2.99?!
Pretty cheap.
COVID price gouging, damn
Iβve stuck something on the wall for a few years, and decided to take it down, it came off so easy!
And I'm about too exhausted to go out and buy anything else. I don't even know if my Walmart a block away has any blue tak.
It does
Chewing gum then! π
Well, that's far less likely for me to even have. π
Because, I can't chew bubble gum. :/
Sticks to my dentures.
cardboard and painters tape if just testing
Take Dentures in your hand and manually do it π€£
Cardboard would work
What about cardboard?
Oh, I have craploads of cardboard.
Too much. I need to start breaking boxes down and putting them in the recycling bin. LOL
Anyone watched Solar Opposites?
It is from the same creators of Rick & Morty... Guess it is on HULU
Hmmmm.. Does anyone have any Li-Ion Rechargable batteries they use and recommend?
