Wrong server lol
I'll dm it
I get winded taking the trash out too but not cause of covid, cause of.. winter padding
@dire dawn norwegians dine out maybe once a month, sometimes it's 3-4 months between each time we eat out, unlike Americans that do it multiple times a week
@clear ferry
Good on you. We've been cooking a lot more in home and maybe ordering out (including pizza) once a week. I've gotten much better at cooking and baking, no complaints!
Yeah, we make full meals at home every day , and have been for 20 years
It's a good way to be
when he says "meals" he means rabbit stew and the like.. picture cabin in the middle of nowhere type "meals"
@clear ferry Where you live at, roughly? A Big Mac is like $3 here. And dollar menu cheeseburgers.
@brave panther norway
Deer hunting is a thing here, so I'd love to have a bunch of deer meat around to cook with. it's tasty
Ahhh
so Angus beef. π€£
rabbit is also a fine meal, although I find it tough
even across the bridge here over in canada, fast food is more expensive and somewhat "better"
@dire dawn we just buy frozen moose, raindeer, whale and seal
wtf russian's only pay like a quarter for a big mac
TF you need whale and seal meat for?
wait i read that wrong lol
Isn't seal pretty high in fat? I'd think it's probably fairly taste-dense
@forest edge 1.84usd it seems as 135 rubles
Clubbing the baby seal though. I'm good. plenty of other tasty bits around
@brave panther black meat, very much oil, but very tasty if prepared right
TF does moose taste like, though?
so, somewhat like deer?
Pretty close to raindeer, a little bit more gamey
(re: deer) Ehhh sort of, yeah.
gamey π€’
i've heard from hunter friends that a lot of the "gamey" in those meats is just bad preparation. I've had deer that tastes great and deer that tastes bad.
the one and only time i ate deer it was gross
something to do with not draining it or cleaning it soon enough
buck can be rough. doe is almost always great, unless it's just burgers
@forest edge you need to get some venison jerky or sausage
Same with whale and seal, have to put it in cold water for a day or two before frying it, because of all the oil in the meat
Lmao I love #the-water-cooler . One minute, it's UniFi. Then it's PoE and WiFi. The on to Corona. Now gamey meat.
my prefered meat is good ole chicken
I'm new here and this is amazing
You're amazing. Thank you for being here.
hey, thanks for having me

Everyone here is amazing for wanting to do it themselves.
Soooo it's 2:45AM π It's like I'm 15 again. Staying up all night. Heh.
Yeah Saturday technically. It's a rainy weekend, I got my cycling in Thursday, so I've got time to rest.
Ick it's been a relatively cold spring, but at least we've had a few good days. Thursday was 83Β°F here (28.3Β°C for the rest of the developed world)
Honestly it's been pretty spring-y this year. It's not often we see mostly 60s-70s and some 80s.
Decent up here in MI, some snow last week
Usually it's like 50s through May then 80, then 100.
Well I should head out. Nice chat. Nice to meet you Endmass. See you all around.
later!
Speaking of gamey meat. Kangaroo can be like that if you donβt cook it right
night!
now i'm wondering wtf roo' tastes like
certainly don't get that in north america
Itβs not bad. Very lean and quite healthy. Itβs not that common but you can find it in most supermarkets in certain parts of the country
I wish I could afford to travel, but I can't even afford a wink hub subscription
π well I donβt think Iβll be travelling for a while
Well if things get really bad I guess thereβll be bonfires everywhere!!
I wish I could complain about that, but the blackout my area had years back was rather....nice
I'm getting a bad case of wanderlust
I'm used to traveling to atleast two countries every year
two countries for you is a train ride!
I'm used to visiting another country every month, even if that simply means going to the London office π
I'm lucky if I leave this state once a year
though, I've been to a lot of other states
There's plenty of time for you to end up in a career that sends you to random corners of the world at little notice
Well, they do... if you fit them on a ship π
things i'd rather not do be a machinist on a ship
Servers don't move, yet @clear ferry ends up travelling the world
None of the stuff I deal with moves, I just have to go where the client/disaster is π
(or at least if it moves, it means somebody's stolen it)
I wish I would have been more involved in IT during HS.
Eh, IT wasn't a thing when I was at school
welding in HS, couldnt pass it up
They were just getting computers when I left
As long as you enjoy what you do, it could have been worse
I know too many IT folks who burned out before 40
I'm certainly not complaining
Hell, I know too many who burned out before 30...
I'm currently building a 3d printer out of a cmm at work. Fun automation stuff
it only took 15 years, but the job is decent
IT and blue/red team is just so interesting.
It can be, but it can also be boring and crappy
I can manufacturer widgets all day, but some of the IT stuff is magic
That's how it looks from the other side too
I see folks who can weld stuff together and make it look like it was made that way... that's also magic
I wish I could weld good, given I own a tig/stick welder. It's quite the skill.
too additive for me. cut that shit out
I can't even solder well... me with a welder would be a disaster π
it's fun, as is soldering
I can join wires, but that's about my limit
Touching circuits is likely to end up with destroyed circuits
I couldnt solder decently until I bought a decent iron
@dire dawn I don't ride trains though, I go by car or plane
Touching circuits is likely to end up with destroyed circuits
@clever mortar I felt like that too at first but then as you mess up and get solder everywhere you quickly learn how to remove it lol
Trains are to superior form of transit
Oh, no, I've shoved soldering irons through circuits
Just getting solder in the wrong place is nothing compared to what I can do
it does require a certain touch
too much pressure or because you thought the tip needed to be 5x the surface of the sun?
I've only been to 18 countries, I should up that
ive been to checks notes two
I don't remember how many I've been to, probably not 18, but π€·
if i can't reach it by pogo stick i don't go
I've only been to 12 in Europe though, still many close by
well to fair, atx has to cross 3 countries just to buy bread
not hard to rack up country count when there are so many piled onto one another

Canada is a major deal for travel, and I'm technically north of a bit of it
blame Canada, blame Canada
the poutine is legit on this side of it, atleast
Ey dont call me friend buddy
dont call me buddy guy
π¨π¦ π
canada still owes me some money
weed shops in canada are next level, coming from america atleast.
I rarely partake, but next level is next level
Curling is everywhere. I wish this was the norm
Soldering is fun
Tools and materials make a huge difference though
Technique is obviously a huge component too,
hakko iron and kester solder = winning
But all the youtube tutorials I've seen are hot garbage.
Maybe I should make some decent ones
do it!
get a hakko FX. it just works
Looked at the ts80 opted for the 100 instead
The usbç would be nice, but there were to many cons
I've melted thread-serts into a plastic intake manifold with it. It gave zero effs
be a man use a nail heated via camp fire to do the soldering
I have a couple, still like my iron
Perfect for you @hushed basalt https://images.app.goo.gl/9JJfzCsnQsRfdXkW9
except for plumbing, or that one automotive fitting that wont come off
My father in law used to solder pipes, but that was 30+ years ago
Yeah, and in Norway we do pipes inside pipes, so leaks haven't been any issues
in flint, mi we do bare lead pipes, apparently
I have that, in my 36 year old house, in the basement only though
Copper pipes though
lots of solid lead in places. which is fine, given calcium buildup. shame they changed the mix in flint to break that down
it;s been years, still not fixed
wonder what the odds are I can get someone to add authentication option to the rest_command so I don't have to use curl on a command line lol
...and it's 4am. I'm going to go drool drunkenly into my sofa and pass out. great chatting with ya'll
@clear ferry pipes in pipes?
Yes, all water pipes go inside larger pipes
So if the inner pipe breaks, there is no leak
And I think newer ones have sensors inside the larger pipe
Sounds like you live somewhere that has sane housing standards π€
you call pipes within pipes to stop a leak sane?
whatever caused the leak is bound to deteriorate into pieces, those pieces could get stuck and cause issues
and if they are small enough guess who's adding something to their diet for who knows how long since there isn't any leak to to say something is wrong lol
Pex with a manifold with no inline joints seems very sensible to me
Unfortunately it's all branched copper here
And uninsulated
I'd love to have a mechanical room
With all the HRV, manifolds, network rack, etc
Hot water systems go outside though
Water cooled racks would be nice at home
can't get over the sheer amount of crap they put on this doorbell that isn't being used for anything or even can be used for that matter.
this company literally took the firmware of another device and appended a couple of extra things required to make it work and just slapped it on out there lol
i shouldn't complain, their laziness is the only reason i';m able to change some of this crap and keep things local but wow lol
Google nest have hiked the price for there cloud service, if you only have one camera its 3x the price to keep 24/7 footage history
meh its for parents house, it plugs in and just works for them, having a nvr setup is added complication and upfront cost
My 70 year old father just installed three cabled Poe cameras by himself
upfront its more pricey i've noticed
Thinking of going for NVR though as not much option
you think its best to go for hikvision instead of the cheaper brands?
(what it seems like)
Think my father paid 35$ each off ebay
Don't remember the brand
I buy $20 no names from China
Nest Ai, for motion does seem good though?
I'd imagine a cheaper NVR will bring up more false positives to quickly glance through?
@forest edge it's pretty normal to have kids up until you are in your late 30s here @forest edge
The ones who have kids early are usually dropouts or misfits in general
it gets harder every year for women to havve children after 30
Yes, but not impossible
so if he was 34-35, that generally means he was getting busy to make you lol
"Woman get out the best yak's fur blanket we got! Time to make a mini me!"
my father would do the same thing, but he wouldn't know what to buy
so, it would be 9000 questions, then i'd show up a month later and the house would track me
well older analog system are easy to setup
My father has always been tech savvy, which is probably why I am
if they can figure out how to plug in rabbit ears on a tv they can connect a cammera to a nvr
Nice just finished automating my Bathroom Fan and Lights. Simple but its really nice to open shower door and fan turns on, heat activates skylight opens etc.
My grandfather was 50 when he had my dad
My dad was the firstborn too haha
Yeah that's similar to my mum
She is the youngest by 12 years difference
My wife doesn't even want 3 years difference in our kids
We still have to decide if we want to try for another one, current one is 19 months
it's not the guys age that matters cept in the context that usually the wives are generally around the same age lol
altho I think the older you are the more likely you'll pass something unwanted down through the genes
Indeed
That is proven in reports
I think the chance of getting a child with downs syndrome was significantly higher in women over 37 or something
this damn pir has me so baffled. during the day it can go all day without a false detection yet at night they just come so frequently. I would think insects but it's not around a light source to attract them or anything and i don't see anything on the image
Aye, typical with poorly tuned motion detection, change in light, or a shadow trigger it
this thing is set to not detect anything further than 1ft from it
and i tested that
lol
apparently my wyze cam can't decide if it should be in night vision or not
I've got a few wyze cams i use in temporary deployments and they work great
RSTP to blue iris and block the internet. Works like a charm
I just received my first camera!
an ESP32-CAM π
I'm in an apartment ... nothing much to 'home secure' here
for the price wyze cam is no joke
person detect on official firmware. i mean come on lol
I travel a lot, well, used to before covid, and i set them up in hotel rooms alot
hook them up to my portable router that VPNs to home and i have instant eye on my hotel room
you know they released a firmware to turn the v2 into a webcam for people who couldn't find any to buy for working from home lol
it directly plugs into a pc from the usb port
interesting
Yeah hotel.rooms are super insecure
I'd cam it up when I left
Although I haven't stayed in a hotel since 2018
about to buy a second a wyze, gonna try that webcam software. hell that just turns a wireless into a poe camera for 20 bucks lol
they probably removed the night vision stuff etc tho
lol they make a webcam app for phones?
do you havve to plug it into your pc? assume you had to isntall something on pc as well?
So I can bring it with me and show collegues servers
Just the windows app and the android app, then open the ip
interesting
Usb as well?
the "reopening" of shit is so damn mixed feelings it's crazy in every sense of the word
one part wants these loons who never followed protocol to begin with and protest stuff being closed to hurry up and get sick and die or get over it but then another part knows that if another mass spread takes place i'll be stuck at home for even longer lol
someone brought up a good point about getting take out becoming more risky with food places opening up because the risk factor increases along with it
Yeah some stuff is supposed to open in June but I'm still gonna be cautious. I've already been pretty strict about the guidelines
Time and time again my body proves to me that it ultimately doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I will almost always wake up around 06:30
Speaking of which, are beds wireless chargers for humans? π€
So that USB cellular dongle... Why not just get one of your old phones out of the man-drawer and use that?
I don't know of a way for home assistant to send a text from that phone
KDE connect
If this is not the channel to introduce myself I apologize.
Hi I am Bart and I have started to use HA. My struggles and success are shared on https://arkor.nl
It is only up a couple of days but it will grow once I start configuring more.
My biggest challenge: put everything I control with my Harmony Hub on HA. If you think you can contribute please let me know! Thanks to you all for a wonderful product
Welcome Harrie
@hushed basalt if you want, but also wifi
@wintry crow interesting
@ivory fractal Home Assistant and Hassio are two things constantly used in all kinds of tutorials. They are two completely different things. They are more the same than they are diffrent. Your wording makes it sound worse than what it actually is.
plus we can't use the term "Hassio" anymore π’
We have our national constitutional day tomorrow, I'm glad they are not allowing people to go in marches and trains
@forest edge thanks! This clearly shows I am a beginner, confused by everything I found online! All suggestions to make my website a better and more correct place are welcome ππ»ππ»
well be prepared for things to change within weeks/months time frame lol
Just want to give a big π to all of you that makes HA such a great platform. I'm long time Samsung Smartthings user, but they simply just lost it. Daly breakdowns and constant problems with even simple automations. Started using HA a few weeks ago and it just works π
@forest edge but atleast you have missiles that can go 17 times faster
@clear ferry not sure i follow. did i miss something?

Time and time again my body proves to me that it ultimately doesn't matter what time I go to bed, I will almost always wake up around 06:30
@scenic radish and the more you do it, the more likely that will be your norm the rest of your life, you'll be retired and waking up at 6:30am wondering for the love of peach cobbler why can't you just sleep in late!
@scenic radish tasker too maybe?
I would not use an old cell phone for critical notifications. The longer they stay powered between any kind of reboot the more undependable they become.
you might even outdraw the charge rate
Root it, tasker on reboot schedule
And set up mqtt or webhook battery alert with tasker as well
prob end up killing the battery before the first time it was actually needed lol
and now that it's daytime outside the pir is back to working as it should.. witaf
Perhaps. But with constant 5v float charge and no use there shouldn't be any draw from the battery
the os is a hog draw
on it's own
and every background service/app plus anything else just adds to it
What happens to pir at night?
I tried to use a cellphone as a live feed camera once and that ended badly quick, then i tried to use another for something somewhat similar that he wants which was to sms myself an image taken from a local network drive once every 10 mins. that flopped too
What happens to pir at night?
@wild grove i dunno but mine seems to become possessed
Shitty software
I used a cell phone for baby monitor with the dormi app. Worked great for years. It wasn't old though was a 50 prepaid Moto that I never activated
My cameras usually only had issues at dusk /dawn when lights came on and went off, but I tuned that out
@clear ferry somehow i picture you missing out on all kinds of things cause your "tune job" worked alittle too well haha
Currently figuring out how to run doods best
Because it only thinks I'm 20% person while the chair on my porch seems to be 88% airplane
Guys, I'm all new to this. But can't wait to get started. Is there someone who could quickly check if I've got all the necessary products in my shopping cart? Buying at the Dutch Amazon.
I don't think i would like that unless I had a powerful pc to run it on, I just don't like the idea of extending the wait time on being notified my tree is a bird
#hardware-archived would be good @south oyster
Maybe a diff model? Although I thought it used a decent one by default
@forest edge tinkerer does it in 0.7 seconds on a old i5
@clear ferry thank you!
i know he told me
I'm missing avx on my two main servers, so thinking of running doods in a seperate system
Could pick up a Google coral edge tpu
Thinking about it
if you could teach doods or supply your own models or whatever easily i would consider it more
but atm not sure it would really help my sitaution
I use motioneye for detection on my streams
as do i
But is that your issue? The actual motion detection? Or the image processing?
motion detection. my front camera goes off every time a car drives by at night and if it's bad weather out, holy spam batman
there dosen't seem to be ahappy middle between not triggering off car headlights and detecting actual people walking up to my door lol
I even masked off the image but headlight reflecting off the ground or tree's still sets it off
@verbal coral Thanks
Hmm, I don't have many false positives any more
But the config would be so different from each setup
i know
I was hoping the pir would help me out but I need to more so at night than during the day and welp so much for that lol
it's like during the day everything works great but for some reason night seems too complicated for my crap
Like you even have people 100miles around your cattle farm
Maybe you need to filter on the not_cattle attribute
i don't live on my farm lol
Just in the adjoining well house
just to give you an idea
I have mine set to take a single snapshot on motion
yesterday I had 212 snapshots
thats over a 24 hr period but still holy crap
Lol
That is what I used to have with zoneminder
Last I checked I had five events per day
another thing i don't get is. i havve my light switch detection set to 7% yet it took a picture everytime lightning struck
you would think the whiting out the image would constitute as a light switch lol
0 issues with my camera system
Tho Iβm letting unifi protect do most of the work and Iβm streaming to HA
I hope I can set up doods zones so I can know when some one parked in my reserved parking spot
one day unifi is gonna pull a sono's and discontinue something that will break all your toys and i'm gonna quietly snicker in the shadows
π
Damn that is expensive stuff
hey they give free shipping on orders over $500 so buying one thing is free shipping lmao
The flex and the G3 is probably the closest in quality and usability to my cameras
That are 20-30$ from AliExpress
$20 video quality
But how much was it?
20 bucks
Exactly
lol
bet the built in cloud key video detection is way better than motioneye tho lol
I have a cloud feature in mine too, but I blocked them in the firewall
unifi dosen't have a local option?
A tree is just above it dropping all its leaves every fall
Cutting down the tree this summer probably
is that the back yard porch or same front at diffrent angle?
No that is the back one
looks like ikea stuff lol
@forest edge not for object
It's regular NΓΈrwΓ«giΓ₯n stuff
they just record on motion and let you view the entire day in seconds
err flag on motion... allways recording
Just $25 per month?
you would think ubiquiti would havve more local options at thier prices
@clear ferry its all local
all of it
the only cloud part is their optional remote web portal that does direct connections to your hardware if you are too lazy to port foward etc
I dont pay shit for subscriptions
wtf
that post i made on the forums the other night that i ended up removing only an hour later already got snagged by google, it just popped up in my search results lol
actually it says 3 days ago
nice story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MticYPfFRp8
5/7 would hear when going to bed
When he describes the company building bridges... That's exactly how it is where I work... Great laugh this morning, Thanks
ALL CODE IS BAD!
This kinda works some of the time π€£ -- describes my attempt to keep gmusic_player component alive
true?
False
FASLE
I despise the IT section in my line of work. I know they have an important function but they have no concept of reality. When you network is so secure, you canβt do your job π€·π»ββοΈ
Remindes me on Qubes OS
We don't have IT department at our workplace, I often just run my own network.
recently the boss setup AD
So even more incentive to stop using network
Hi all... been messing with HA for a little while, thought I'd say hello.
You ok mate? should we call someone?
If I have a noob ? where should I post it?
(The topic is at the top of the window - click to expand)
Just seeing how others are doing this. I have a rainbird controller and want to integrate it to HA, but I also want to ensure that there is a redundancy in the system if HA is down and/or we are away on vacation. Is it best to just copy the basic programming (time/ day/ duration) on both systems and then have HA manage the more complex stuff such as automation for rain delays? Is there a best practice?
Sounds like a good topic for #hardware-archived or #integrations-archived
got it
https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/397426163649216512/711202878525669387 you need to stain the deck
Random question - Is there a channel for / best suited for chatting about routers, on this server? (Like Ubiquiti/Mikrotik stuff and such) - or a discord server one could guide me to, for such?
In a general chat sense, here since it's not HA related
There's probably a stack of Discords, but I don't know any
I have terible ideas - I ll try to build and install qemu on a pi 3 to run hassos
I mean - that sounds like the supported method π
duude - already forgot how slow such a pi is
Thanks Tinkerer ^^ I'll challenge my google-fu a bit longer, seeing if I can't find the answer to my questions, before bringing it up π
And, it's kind of HA related, I suppose! I mean, with IoT, VLANs, and all such. With more and more IoT devices invading my home I'm starting to look into upgrading my security a bit, and apparently my current ASUS router doesn't seem to really support VLAN.
most of us love ubiquiti devices
I got an ER-x and an UAP as network gear and it brings me far
Ubnt is more polished. Mikrotik is cheaper

Just ignore the grumpy commercial perfectionist π
We should probably nag @trail crag about his idea for that #networking channel
xD
There might be custom firmware available for your Asus router too
I've looked into the ER-x, and the USG. ER-x vs. price is decent, however USG vs. price is ridiculous for a device dating back to 2014 - but I've got a bit more experience with UniFi through the AP, on the Pi/now-VM. ER-x has a bit of the same issue there, but with a lower price-tag.
Mikrotik seems more up-to-date hardware wise, with a price that matches the ER-x, but the GUI seems very.. basic, 1990. I feel like I need quite a bit (read: lot) more networking knowledge in order to work with RouterOS, than I need for working with UniFi.
UDM has a high pricetag, though definitely has the hardware.. yet, its wattage is rated at twice that my current Ryzen server is running at, alternative is a USB network adapter, and trying out pfSense - did install it on a VM just to check it out. Sure is a lot of settings vs. my * coughs * ASUS.
Already running Merlin on my ASUS

Mikrotik isn't for the UI - you'll manage it on the command line
That reduced price comes at a cost π
@clever mortar switched from OpenVPN to wireguard. So much better
Aye.
Yup, it's my default now
Faster to connect, Tasker integration is way better too
I haven't played with the Tasker integration yet. Need to read up on that
Any good guides out there?
The USG has UniFi, which feels nice to work with.. But.. 2014. With IPS enabled it falls to a weak 80Mbit throughput.
It's super easy actually. Join the beta, and then it's just a Tasker function
Done.
Way easier than OpenVPN
Oh and enable external access in the wireguard app
i think tasker is the one app i didnt sign up for the beta
probably because for some things im really dependent on it
Interesting, looks like NebulaVPN
also Iβm glad Iβve found a place on the Internet where I can say βIβm going to spend this afternoon upgrading the firmware on my light switchesβ and get advice instead of mocking!
Yeah, but here you get advice and mocking for your choice of devices π
well sure
I'm not switching VPNs again
YOU CAN'T MAKE ME
I still used the PiVPN installer on my Debian server even though it means | bash π±
PiVPN now includes Wireguard, which caught me by surprise
Yeah that's what made me switch tbh
And generating QR codes in the terminal. So cool
Was a bit of a... challenge scanning the QR code with my Chromebook lol
π€£
I'll give you a fun Norwegian fact, or as Sandy Togsvik says on QI, a Randy Scandi, wife asked me what cake to bake for constitutional day tomorrow, I asked for BlΓΈtkake which literally translates to Moistcake or Softcake , not sure of an English equivalent
Damn Portal 2 is a good game.
I listened to the turret you can save from the incinerator for the first time. After a while it starts foreshadowing.
"Don't make lemonade"
"The answer lies below"
"Her name is Caroline"
Never got into the first portal game atleast
One of my all-time favourite games is F.E.A.R though
Which Voice Asssistant platform are you using and why did you pick that one: Google Voice/Alexa/Siri/Cortana/Ada/other ? Trying to decide which way I may go and would like to hear from those who have already traveled this road.
See #voice-assistants-archived @silent canyon
π but I am not asking for support, just looking to see what paths others have taken and maybe a few insights into why they picked one over the others.
got it
Even in Norwat they know how utterly cool portal is. Get with the program. @clear ferry
'Still Alive' from at the end of Portal during the credits.
'Still Alive' by Jonathan Coulton: http://www.jonathancoulton.com
and sung by Ellen McLain (GLaDOS, TF2 Announcer, HL2 Overwatch Administrator)
I don't own the song or video in any way. It's a great song, and I upl...
Man, a good scone is something I miss dearly.
Hmm...I just googled clotted cream. Do you make your own @clear ferry ?
Something like that
Tediore, do you clot your cream?
Talk about bad timing to check in

Ha! Beat ya
Dammit
Anyone using wsl remotes with vscode
stopped using it because it sucks (weird network service interference, excessive file locking, ...)
wsl v1 at least
instead I run vs code natively and set my preferred terminal to wsl
I've found that way to cause it's on suite of problems
Using /mnt/c had it's issues
Now I'm trying wsl remotes with the code natively in wsl, to see if that works
At least now I can actually chmod the repo
It does mean I can't use github desktop though
Hi All, long time user but have decided to start from scratch rather than migrate
Can anyone help with setting up 'Lets Encrypt'. I own a domain so dont need duckdns. Im running hassio on Raspberry PI and have setup all necessary port forwarding (80,443,8231) dont now how to generate certfile and keyfile
But, the cake is a lie!
gebb i use the acme support in traefik to talk to LE

Finally all Norwegians will celebrate constitutional day like I have done for 20 years
At home, watching TV

What is constitutional day about

I just updated my HA from v0.96 to the most current, i see a lot has changed in it. The new updates make it nicer to add in integrations.
I'm impressed you didn't have a breaking change hit you
That is almost a year of updates
i didn't update directly to it, i think it would of broke.
I setup new devices using most current version and am slowly moving over to it from my old one.
i stopped HA versions after 0.96 because i had some issues with my alexa skills i use. and never got around to updating after there was fix for it, cant even recall what was not working back then.
but now I need redo my setup since i use a wink hub to control my lutron lights, have to move off using wink hub and having some issues getting a quick fix setup for my lutron lighting
I just tried to import my old config data to a fresh install of 109. I used the packages component but it doesnt work now. I get Component error: packages - Integration 'packages' not found. Is that expected?

Hmm...I just googled clotted cream. Do you make your own @clear ferry ?
@green inlet get a frozen one, usually they are available in supermarkets in ice cream areas, and they are a lovely substitute of icecreams
its like ice cream but more creamy
and no eggs so much lower risk of salmonella π
im wondering how much hassle would be to integrate a bluetooth device into HA. Is bluetooth just a carrier which carries standarized messages, i would just need to sniff somehow and so could use some python library to send and receive them?
i just bought a Bluetooth padlock for my garden tool shed and im wondering if it would be possible to lock/unlock it remotely
nope, you need an converter for every device in esphome
miflora works for example, but you wont be able to connect a cheap bluetooth clicker
you can get the signal strenght just fine, but interactions are a difftent story
I need to play with it, I have a lot of esp boards
just orderd.... 6 again - also replacing the 8266 with the 32's after I can use them for room presence π
I think I have 8 32s and 4 nodemcu and 3 wemos , plus some 32cam and other small stuff laying around

@clear ferry see you could have been doing something like this THIS WHOLE TIME! https://youtu.be/Q9fjKeYOyqU
Parts list is now included below. This is a quick peek at the hardware portion of the DIY garden automation system I've been slowly building over the past year or so. Currently, the system is managing climate control, doing pH and nutrient dosing, fertigation schedule, light c...

How much power would that use?
the system in the vvideo i linked?
no not for freezing, just someone trying to automate vegetable growing in a a closed system
not sure how much power it all takes but he had 3 esp's and 2 arduinos and 4 large pumps with like 6ish smaller pumps. the main box had a single 12v source stepped down to 7 and 5 respectively for various things and a few tp link power sockets
he ran his HA off a pc in another room
The lights would be the big one
the whole thing probably consumes way less power than most HA'ers who have crap all over the house being controled lol
the makeshit diy humidifier was awesome lol
Is anyone able to help me figure out how to expose my Bluetooth dongle to my HA docker? My Linux host can see it, but not sure what i do with "--net=host" to make it show up. Its for the MiFlora plant sensors

we don't get ghost in the US anymore, they all pretty much just go to EU these days
Maybe some ir source?
Typical US, outsourcing and then blaming others when the local Yurei market tanks
we gotta outsource something, god knows we been taking in everything for too long
@nocturne aspen , in the US?
Oh I'm not sure about US
You must have some kind of "continental food groceries" though?
As weve got "us imported candies aisle" in our supermarkets
No, USA is the best, they never import inferior nations food @nocturne aspen
hahaha Wink sent out an email with a preview of new features they're releasing since so many people have subscribed. The new feature's they're announcing? More icons in the app, and an option to have 3 light toggles in a row instead of 2. π

Mind fucking blown
@clear ferry wont using fibre instead of interconnect greatly increase power consumption ?
just asking as fibre devices ive seen in the past usually had huge power consumption
and also is there anything else i should consider when buying used transceivers on ebay? can i just buy any two 850nm SR transcievers and OP3 cable?
will there by any difference between single mode or multimode in my use case and are some transcievers HBA specific or all can do ethernet?
ah crap read in a recent post that amcrest is moving toward removing the ability to use the SET aspect of their API in newer firmwares
@nocturne aspen not really, negligible in a server anyway
SR and OM3 or higher is what you'll need
You can run LR if you want, but that is choice, or OM5 if you want, but in you scenario it'll make no difference
SR == MM / LR == SM
you gotta be friggin joking.. it took the pi foundation a YEAR to release netboot then only 2 days later USB Boot was released as beta
I should move my zigbee2mqtt to netboot really
Gotta be better than usb or SD performance wise anyway
@junior forge pi foundation heard you guys were cooking up an alternative means of bypassing us needing usb boot so bad that they are releasing the usb boot ability in a few days lmao
I still think it is not the best solution.
It is to hard to use for a lot of people
yea but for long term dependability your only other option it net booting. even limiting access to the sdcard once per session is still a shorter lifespan then usb to hd
I wouldn't be surprised if rpi5 comes with eemc options
A man can dream
it would only be the connector, not a soldered chip lol
they still gotta keep the price down

That dude is 95% wrong, but it's not completely stupide.
At least in my country, all major car maker have a low frequency wireless network that map most of the country and they all car are "connected" to it
The company gather analytic, and share the location data with the GPS company for live trafic alert. it's also used when you use the "emergency" or "service" button.
i don't beleive it's use for OTA, but it could be... i'm not sure
I'd go with the classic Godzilla attack for those towers. https://media1.tenor.com/images/cd1d4d2534bf6e1d48bfa986662bec99/tenor.gif
Generally not used for OTA, that's... advanced for most manufacturers
i was looking for a new electric car a years ago (i had a crach since i won't be able to pay the insurence on a new car now) and when i requested if we could opt-out, they said yes but:
- no gps
- no extended radio information (like picure of the station and stuff)
- no assistance
- no remote AC
and i thing that was it
Unsurprising really, no remote connectivity, no remote connectivity π€·
yea, but GPS ... i style have a TOMTOM from 2005 who work ...
the picture of the radio station thing is weird too since that's sent by the broadcaster, nothing to do with the car manufacturer
it's encoded on the airwave ?

welp the archer a7 is going back. can't open ports for ipv6. are you kidding me tplink
lol
my shitty google wifi supports that feature
linksys/cisco, asus, netgear
the old tried and true
you could see if there is tomato or ddwrt for your router before returning it. that would give you every option there is for a router
it does support openWRT but i don't want to flash that just to find out it doesn't support ipv6 port opening
not used that one but got a friend who had, he loved it
it most likely does
google is your friend
Could someone help me with the ESPhome integration as I am not too sure how to get it going. I have a ESP8266 and a BME280 wired and ready to go currently connected to Wifi.
I'm seriously so pissed off about this lol
Because my Google wifi supported it, it didn't even occur to me that this router wouldn't
You actually managed to get a worse router than Google WiFi?
@scenic radish slap OpenWRT on it, even IF it doesn't support what you want it's not like they check the thing when you return it. Hell most that crap dosen't even get looked at till after it's RMA'd
I read things about really bad throughput with openwrt so I think I'm gonna return it
I can recommend Ubiquiti as a replacement π

@dull chasm One time there was only a simple plastic chain fence around the lawn at the front of my Parent's house. to cut the lawn we put a 6ft mower on the back of an old MF 135 and did the whole lot in seconds. Then there was a wall build around it, and we suddenly had to use a little petrol push mower π’
LOL i could use nieghbors tractor @strange vapor
you know they make systems to make those that size autonomous
there are few farmers around here that have some of them, they are freaky to watch
no shit....i asked him how many acres he had ..he could not nail down to nearst 1k .....i could see automation goes wrong and wife is dead in house ....only thing left is a wet spot
lol
That with a camera and remote control could be fun π
they mainly use them here so 1 person can do the job of two. one tractor like a cultivator drives itself scooping up corn or whatever while the person drives a secondary tractor with a trailer to fill up
I spent a weekend driving a machine which basically layered stone under the soil to leave the top good for grass and leave good drainage. Big massive Fendt 1050MT which was able to pull this machine at around 1/2kph!!! The way it worked was really cool. Get into the field, drive the perimeter for the little onboard computer to learn the field. Mark out where there's any obstacles such as trees or powerlines, and then drive to it's starting point.
Prep the machine, which mostly involved removing some safety pins for the road, jump back up and hit start. Then startup the PS2 and let it rip.
The only reason I was really there was as a pair of smart hands if someone odd happened the machine. Outside of stopping to grab food, I only had to get off three times in two days when sensors weren't sure what they were seeing!
Yes
Are .ovf exports a valid way to backup a VM? If ever needed, will it reload the entire VM, OS and all?

heh.
I'm slowly changing out some of my old zigbee sensors and moving those to interior doors, and using the newer Z-Wave sensors for exterior doors.
Normally one would put the magnet part itself, on the door, the part that moves, right?
Yeah. That's what I thought. I accidently put the sensor on the garage back door (to the outside), on the door itself. LOL
Doors? Wood.
If you've got any uPVC I can recommend https://sensative.com/sensors/strips-zwave/guard/
Well, I'm worried about one of my doors, specifically, my front door is metal covered wood.
They're hidden in use π
Neat!
they are also throw-away aren't they ?
After about 7 to 10 years or so
I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading things long before then π
I wonder if the USPS mailman will actually deliver today. My last Z-Wave contact sensor is coming today, supposedly, but they're extremely late for normalcy.
whoat ? i change the battery in my fibaro sensor every 1y.5
Fibaro, what sensor?
the door 2
My motion sensors I have to replace the battery every 3~5 months. :/
with temperature disable obviously
My utility door sensor has been in for about 3 years, battery is at 75%
Hmm, you can disable that? heh
yea you can disable the report, same for light sensor on the eyes, save battery life a bit.
What evil magic is shoved in those stript to keep theme running for so long
heh
Souls of the damned users
gived that away long time ago when trying the beta of google assistant, and trying to get it back with self-hosting ever since :)
random thought, anyone know if the steam vr "knok knok" or popup have some api endpoint ?
Well, I'm worried about one of my doors, specifically, my front door is metal covered wood.
@undone aspen solid wood or you talking about that think mdf crap?
They do. The interior doors are cheaper. Hollow, frames and Wood. But still not mdf
solid wood doors with no cover aside from paint are pretty pricey here
When I replaced all the door hinges.... i needed actual help. lol
I bet, i've movved a few solid wood doors in my time. i know they are heavy
But the newer hinges have extra anti kick locking mechanism on them which is nice.
?
Iβm thinking of buying a new solid door... just to use as a desk top. lol
Kind of yeah. They inter lock when closed.
yea, that's so someone can't remove the pins and then remove the door
That, combined with the extra long screws thatβs goes into the cinder block... will be near impossible to lock open.
usually those are for doors where the hingle is facing outward
just get you one of those bars that spans the width of the door and locks on both sides of the wall lol
Yeah. I have a couple doors like that. The front door opens inwards
The back lanai door and the garage entry door within the garage though open outwards.
holy mod-y 16 greenies present
the doors that open outwards is what you want those security hinges on
Yep.,
That's where they are. π
Even though the back door itself.... Has a window. π
but, breakin that would trigger off the Alexa Echo glass break sensor.
I havve attack cats, no need for alarms
Heck, every room in my house that has glass, has an Echo Dot at least. π
I have 4 dogs. They're loud. LOL
Ugh, I still have 2 more contact sensors to replace. heh
Still worried about the metal covered door, one.
Welp... I guess I'm off to it. One more door, until USPS delivers the last sensor. LOL
lol
Then, it's off to cameras! LOL.
Got one camera, I'm more than willing to wait till night to do, because if I want to do it right, it'll involve going through the attic to run the wire up and over the soffit to the garage for power.
Mounting it, during the day, yes, because concrete, and noisey hammer drilling LOL
covid made me too fat for that kind of work
hah
I wish I could muster up the power/energy to re-wire my bedroom ceiling fan+light, because right now, it's a single 2-conductor wire, when I /want/ a 3-conductor, to have two switches controlling light and fan independantly.
Still worried about the metal covered door, one.
@undone aspen
On the only metal door i have had some weird battery issue and latency on with the fibaro door2. but i might also have been a bad sensor, and not gonna pay 50β¬ more for a test :(
But.... Gah, that's a hard spot to get to.
heh.
Yeah. Well, I have a SmartThings multisensor on the door now, and it's been working just fine all this time.
But.... Different sensors, different potential concerns.
I wish I could muster up the power/energy to re-wire my bedroom ceiling fan+light, because right now, it's a single 2-conductor wire, when I /want/ a 3-conductor, to have two switches controlling light and fan independantly.
@undone aspen not sure what options you have or what country your in but lutron here in the states make switches with canopy's that can do that without the need for runnign wire
how Oo ? if the light is hard wire to the fan you will need rewire no mater what ... no ?
Hmmm, Maestro family of Lutron?
they are nice, two buttons with dimming/fan speed control on a single gang
yea Maestro
Hmmmmm...
@fiery sorrel there is a canopy that hooks directly to the fan that communicates with the switch on the wall to make it all work, not wireless, everything is sent through the power wire
Interesting.
I have like 4 in this house even tho i wired every fan with 3 way wiring lol
I just leavve the red wire tucked behind incase down the road.. been going for over 10 years without issue tho
ok .. .canopy return some tent in google image ... i'm still lost :'(
let me see if i can find it online lol
thank's π
Hmmmmmmm...
I see. light button on top. Fan button on bottom, then micro toggles to the right of those for up/down control.
My Home Depot has 10 of those in stock it seems..
they look exactly like this, this one isn't what you would get i don't think, just the first thing showing what they look like that poped up https://www.lowes.com/pd/Lutron-Maestro-300-Watt-Single-Pole-White-Indoor-Touch-Combination-Dimmer-and-Fan-Control/1158775
Is that Lutron Clear Connect compatibele though?
they probably make them "smart" these days, not sure, like i said i had mine for over 10 years and smart stuff wasn't as big or available then
i hate micro module soooo much
heh
Well, they certainly make independant switches that work with 3-conductor wires. Which I don't have. LOL
do you have gain in the us to easily add wire ?
Ahhh, Maestro Wireless does not work with Lutron Smart Bridge (or Pro)
Caseta is mostly a better choice. For smart home integration.
So, I need to re-wire my fan anyway. Do it right.
i spend the last month adding neutral wire to every switch downstare, and i still have lot's of work upstare ... but once it's done, it's done !
well you may wanna get on it, the attic only gets hotter as we move into summer lol
i been in mine in august, it is not fun
3 spots, at least, I want an electrician to work on. Bedroom fan, guest bedroom ceiling light which I think is hooked up to a VERY old fan speed control unit via lamp wire... And living room ceiling fan which has 3-conductor, but does not have the right guage wire. Plus a few areas where I lack neutral wires in my light switch boxes.
And, I'm considering adding a ceiling fan to my office anyway too. Circulate the air better in here, since it's the hottest room of the house.
(with, of course, the server rack in here...)
honestly a ceiling fan doesn't cool a room down, you need to exchange and vent out the hot air
Makes things feel better though
It makes things hugely better.
I automated my living room ceiling fan to counter temperature offsets, and it works!
I never really turn on my ceiling fan in the living room myself anymore. It's automatic and it's very comfy. π
i got one in this room and still have to open a window when my gfx does anything more than play youtube videos lol
@undone aspen if you're ok with Z-Wave, Innovelli is working on a combo switch that can operate a fan with only the 2 wires
it uses a canopy module
Hmmmmmm
@amber bramble Interesting. I'm perfect with Z-Wave. That's my primary choice.
there's also a Zigbee one by KingOfFans that Home Depot sells. I have those in all my fans but the range on them is awful
@undone aspen https://community.inovelli.com/t/fan-light-switch-project-hurricane-pre-orders-now-open/23 has the details on Inovelli's controller

Yeah, looking at that now.
Ahh.
One more issue, might arrise.
The potential lack of neutral wire.
ah yeah that could be a problem
Heh.
some of the inovelli stuff works without a neutral, but not sure about this
I don't know, I need to check into it, still, but, it's a highly probable issue.
This one, they have a v2 clause on that.
So, v1, will likely require the neutral
Definitely some interesting stuff though.
I might, at the VERY least, if I have a neutral, have the ability to use a simple on-off switch at the least, in the current setup.
Keyword, though.. IF.
okay... Off to put one more sensor up.
Still funny though. The Ecobee Smart sensors are very very delayed motion sensors. Better for occupancy detection due to that, which is their intention.
I finally found out where to put my final old zigbee multi sensor. On my actual garage door. To confirm detection on open/closed state. And understand breakind by pulling the safety switch.
With the sensor itself actually on the moving part. Because heck, could sense the rotational metrics
Down to six active cases here
Regional borders open back up today too
Here's to hoping we don't have massive second wave :|
hi is there an way to delete nmap read only entities. I was trying to setup nmap tracking for my phone but done it for the entire network. Now i got 50+ devices added into the entities
What have you tried so far
everything except rolling back to last snap shot state
Does anyone know if there is any way to control hue sync at all from HA? Switching inputs would be great.
@spare canopy mark them as track: false in your known_devices.yaml then they wonβt show up. But a question for #integrations-archived
@fiery sorrel, must be nice to have access to stuff to be able to add wire. In the US, it is code (I think) to staple everything to the studs so you canβt even use the old wire to pull new one.
Alright I now have a rpi 3B+ and a 4...any creative uses for them I should consider?
I'm not using either for home assistant anymore
PiHole, RetroPi
Yeah I thought about selling the pi 4 lol
Guess I could dedicate a pi to pihole instead of using my server for that
Or, use one as a magic mirror/always on display for your HA data
I just use my server
No need to find a use for something if you don't have a use
just get some $$$
Would be nice to dedicate one so that when I need to reboot the server it doesn't affect DNS
But yeah I might just sell the pi 4
Good idea. I hardly have any media tho lol
A pi 3 as Pihole going to slow down your network. No usb drives laying around?
I have a spare SSD and USB-SATA adapter
I also kept a pi 3 hooked up running home assistant as a backup. I rsync my config to it. If something on my NUC goes down I just change my sub domains in nginx and back up on the pi. Also, comforting knowing I have my entire config on another device.
Interesting use case, I'm gonna consider that
I rsync my config to my server's internal eMMC and back up to Google drive
Just throwing out ideas π
Yeah I like that idea
I have also thought of using a different install method on my backup. Just to learn it.....but keeping everything up to date sometimes becomes too time consuming
Gotta switch to core on docker boi
Ditch that venv
Come to a world of not worrying about Python versions
I'd strongly recommend that over traefik
I figure by the time I have to upgrade python, I am going to want to upgrade Debian anyway.
I just have NGINX installed on the host directly with a free cloudflare 15-year cert installed
That will break in safari soon
The only docker containers I have are home assistant, gotify, and cloud9 (nice web-based IDE)
Good thing I don't use safari π
I'd recommend automatic certs it's so easy now
Cloud9 π€’ π€’ π€’
Just go vscode :D
Go π€’ yourself
Give it all to Microsoft.
Lmao
all of it
Give them your soul. You don't have any use for it anyways
You're assuming I even have one at all
You can also use an old rpi3 as a more powerful ethernet connected GPIO device
Get environmental sensors connected to it etc
Reticulation controller
Ooo I like that idea with environmental sensorz
I think a nice environmental sensor is like $25usd
Reticula....what
Out of curiosity I converted the pi 3 to an AP and was not surprised to see the throughput was only 72 mbps on 2.4 and 86 on 5 lol
Whereas with my current router it's 866 Mbps on 5 GHz
Have you thought of buying a used Asus Ac-68U and throwing dd-wrt on it. I have three of them as WAP.
When you send back that tplink π€’
Flea-bay
Cheap
You could also use an old rpi3 as a esphome/tuyaconvert flasher
I used to have one of those ASUS
Connect a barcode scanner to it and have headless grocery scanning
Does that Asus router support ipv6 port opening?
Apparently I have to ask that question
I was also using them as storage for my cameras with the usb connection until I got OpenMediaVault
Option for it in dd-wrt
I wish I could figure out how to turn it on for me
I was pleasantly surprised to see Comcast supports ipv6
specifically looking for ipv6 port opening as an option. the tp-link router supported ipv6 but not ipv6 port opening for some stupid reason
i'd imagine that firmware supports it though, it'd be silly if it didn't
Yea, dd-wrt doesnβt specifically mention ip6 port forwarding The asus 68u can take either and terribly hard to brick
Tediore is too π to use a real firmware
thank the lord telco
though, it's technically "port opening" not "port forwarding" for ipv6
literally unusable
though, it's technically "port opening" not "port forwarding" for ipv6
@scenic radish they are called one in the same for both ipvv4 and ipv6
Once you enable ip6 on dd-wrt you get all kinds of config options also
Man handymen are the worst
Well rental maintenance ones at least
Rough and lazy and poor workmanship
Not my house/problem but still
He redid the seal on the kitchen sink and he's just blasted silicone over top of the old one
Dirt embedded too
i can't get more than 90Mbps out of my unifi AP despite 80Mhz channel width and device reporting connecting at 400Mbps .. it's gigabit on the wires.. strange
do you have one of those performance tanking things enabled like intrusion detection
hope not, but will look, if i did it'd be inadvertently switched ok, have tried to turn off all the "fancy stuff" tm
If I had to wager, I'd guess it was client capabilities slowing you down
i've been trying to sort for a a while actually but no dice... there are a lot of wifi devices on the network.. google homes/ esphomes/ and the usual clients
Doing the test on a Pixel 2.
@tawny radish could be
tries to think of fastest/ most modern device in house
I think that has 2 spatial streams so at 40Mhz channels you could theoretically see a 400Mbps data rate
but that's ideal conditions
if you had those conditions, your theoretical throughput is under 200Mbps due to half duplex and overhead
to be honest, first world problem etc, it's plenty fast. Been dlighted lately as have upgraded internet from 50/10 to 350/40 - v good
that was my next question, how are you measuring? speedtest to the internet or throughput on the wire?
and my linux desktop pc (pop os) is wired obv. π
@tawny radish i have iperf3 running on a pi4 wired in , i can test mobile fone to that via an android iperf app
but mostly i just hit fast.com
the iperf test will give you a more realistic idea of your wireless speed
will try it now
internet speed tests are notorious for caching and other tricks that make people think wireless is "slow"
