2812 will be the correct choice i guess

strange vapor
orchid rose
#

2812 is the budget option but it sucks if you want white light at all

light trout
#

Can they run directly of an ESP chip, or do you need a PSU?

midnight adder
#

depends i guess

#

as for what i read

#

you can power the esp

#

with micro usb

light trout
#

sure, was thinking of the strips, are the ESP powerfull enough to provide the required amount of power on it's own?

orchid rose
#

the regulator on it no but it has output pins directly connected to the input so if you can simply power the esp from the same 5-12V power supply as the strip

light trout
#

so if I use the vin pin that maps directly to the source it "should" be "fine" then 😄

orchid rose
#

yes. However the VIN pin on a lolin nodemcu board is not directly connected to the usb power but some other pin is 😛

light trout
#

wtf... okey then, I'll just split the source then xD

orchid rose
#

Most boards the vin will work but lolin is an exception for some reason. There was a pin I could use though that I found with a quick google search

#

it's worked just fine for me connected that way

light trout
#

I'm not sure what I have, probably the cheapest on Ali I could find 😛

orchid rose
#

says in the back if it's lolin

midnight adder
#

this is what i watched for the hardware

orchid rose
#

It's a good video but keep in mind that it's for holiday lights and other accent lights. I use led strips as "proper" lighting as well and then you'll need one or two white leds as well

But I cant say what I did wrong. It worked well for 10 minutes and I dont think that I created a loop

tawny pebble
#

i meant, there is no integration in HA for Balena. But perhaps it is shown as media_player entity anyway.. you confirm?

clear ferry
#

@tawny pebble @tidal bronze has a lot of multiroom I think

tidal bronze
orchid rose
#

Juri it depends on what you're going to use to output to that device. It looks to support bluetooth, airplay and spotify connect. I would think all of those were supported by HASS?

midnight adder
#

hai peeeepppppooooles

tawny pebble
#

@orchid rose i was looking at denon systems (heos) and similar multiroom audio. My goal is to use TTS from HA for notification around the apartment (the same i'm currently doing with the amazon echo using the Alexa Media) and Spotify for listening to music.

I have tried raspotify, works great (except for my gf phone, there it is not seen, don't know why) but being it not a media_player, HA can not see it

midnight adder
#

you want to get it cheap right

orchid rose
#

do you have a Spotify Premium account?

tawny pebble
#

I've even followed to guide written by @last plaza in his Git, about mopidy and snapcast. Won't work and I don't know how. The snapclient doesn't connect to the snapserver

#

Yes, i own the family account

orchid rose
#

There's an integration for Spotify that should just work for what you want I think but I haven't used it myself

#

I don't know how it lists the different speakers or if it supports that though

midnight adder
#

How's everyone doing?

orchid rose
#

bored and stuck at home like every other day 😛

tawny pebble
#

the problem is my speaker are the amazon echo. so damn close source. only alexa media can talk to them. so yes, the integrations for spotify (i tried a few of them) works because there's my account connected. But i wish my gf is able to use her spotify (premium) to connect to these echo and she can't. because amazon stuff.. sooo i'd like to "build" media_players. simple wifi speakers

orchid rose
#

there is no "simple wifi speaker" it always will go through one standard or another

midnight adder
#

anybody munching chips and gummy bears here?

orchid rose
#

bluetooth is somewhat a standard but I'd prefer wifi

tawny pebble
#

that's the issue. But some time ago i tried installing Kodi on a raspberry and HA saw it as media player and i redirect the TTS of google translate to media_player.kodi.
it worked so damn great for testing. i'd like to achieve the same feelings by having a few wifi speakers that just "connect"

clever mortar
#

Sonos then 😉

tawny pebble
#

or Denon :3

orchid rose
#

I like my Chromecast stuff

dull chasm
#

@orchid rose Musiccast by yamaha then!!

orchid rose
#

my Yamaha doesn't even have network connectivity 😛

dull chasm
#

upgrade

orchid rose
#

already did. The new one is only a few years old so it has a network port (no wifi)

dull chasm
#

doesnt need wifi ....mine is not on wifi

orchid rose
#

I'm not sure if it supports playback or anything. Would be a pain to sync everything with chromecast anyway so just easier to plug a chromecast to it and be done with it

tidal bronze
#

@tawny pebble you can do 2 ways. CC or Alexa to multi-zone AVR
or You can use multi CC or Alexa groups

#

That would be the easiest

dull chasm
#

@tidal bronze you havent noticed a drop in audio quality in chromecast?

tawny pebble
#

the issue is not the multiroom itself, it works already with alexa. The thing is it works under my spotify account, because alexa is connected to my spotify account. Therefore when my gf open her spotify, she has no devices where to cast the music.
With chromecast i will probably fix, but i need speakers for that. But thing is i don't have a chromecast for testing but i have a raspberry.

tidal bronze
#

@dull chasm hmm not really.

dull chasm
#

sync on musiccast is awesome ....but more money

tidal bronze
#

@tawny pebble oh use spotcast

tawny pebble
#

So, what I did, i creating another Spotify account (i own the family, got some more slots left) and connect this other account to alexa's spotify.

#

byut that works only in the tablet which i use for lovelace HA :/ because i connected this tablet to this account. But this makes my account and her account not able to see alexa echoes for music. damn what a story

#

never heard spotcast, i'll have a look

tidal bronze
#

That will fix your issues of not seeing the devices 😀

dull chasm
#

@tidal bronze i am surprised you didnt get the musiccast amps or preamps and be done with it

tidal bronze
#

Only thing is that you will need to have a collection of playlist URI @tawny pebble

#

@dull chasm does not work for me

tawny pebble
#

oh spotcast, o ki know it. used it. Tipped the dev because he did a good job. uninstalled it because not properly working

orchid rose
#

why would there be a drop in audio quality with Chromecast?

tidal bronze
#

@tawny pebble it works great.

clear ferry
dull chasm
#

@tidal bronze they sync perfectly and everthing in one place ....what did not work

tawny pebble
#

@tidal bronze when i was clicking the playlist from lovelace, it was not always starting the echoes. but it's a problem with amazon echo. they go into a kind of standby. also the HA media player I found to have issue in waking them up

#

reason why i want to extirpate the echo dot around the apartment

tidal bronze
#

I have about 11 chromecasts, 4 zones, 2 avr and intercom system. My TTS has 2 classes critical and non essential. Depending on what's being played on what zone they change source from avr to CC only. I don't want to hear any TTS in the area I am listening to music or TV. So TTS is task based and area based. Can't do that if I am using AVR musicast only. @dull chasm

#

@tawny pebble I am sorry don't use anything alexa so don't know anything about those. I removed them tears ago.

dull chasm
#

well damn @tidal bronze but for multiroom control by itself ..... YAMAHA muscicast rocks

#

if i am listening to music screw the rest ....

tawny pebble
#

@tidal bronze you did a good job in removing them. the only reason i still use it is i can call it by "computer" as wake word. Just like in the Batman Lego movie

tidal bronze
#

Just for music not music + tts @dull chasm

dull chasm
#

agree

orchid rose
#

It ties you to one brand though which I generally dislike. I just wish there was a more open standard out there

dull chasm
#

I dont get to use what i have very often but when i do ....screw tts .....amps over power it anyway

tidal bronze
#

Well if it's critical TTS mine will cut all AVRs and run TTS like water leak smoke etc

dull chasm
#

@orchid rose yea but when main avr cost 2k ....secondry amp 700 and bedroom amp 1k .....i am all in

orchid rose
#

I just got my bedroom amp, it cost me 20€ 🙂

#

I connected it to a 20€ chromecast audio and I'm pretty happy with the setup

dull chasm
#

damn ......totally diff kinda setup ....but @tidal bronze has 10x money invested than me

tidal bronze
#

@dull chasm as a 3rd option I have a CC audio routed through the intercom system, just in case room CCs are busy and a critical TTS needs to be played 😉

dull chasm
#

that i can go with .....but screw it messing with main amps

#

maybe muting avr's or amps but no control

tidal bronze
#

I used to do CCA to both my aventage units but lately I am happy with CC groups and the intercom system. Just cut the amps for critical TTS and not play TTS in AVR active zones.

dull chasm
#

that is what i would do if i had crictal annoucments or maybe led based ....but not screw with main audio .....i have worked my ass off to have a decent system

tidal bronze
#

Sometimes I hate TTS I've cut down about 70% of the announcements.

dull chasm
#

yep .... I am way below your cost but i got 8k in main system ....screw a door has opened interrupting

tidal bronze
#

If my dogs are not crazy I can cut down 99% of TTS 🤣

dull chasm
#

talk to dogs and tell them to chill

tidal bronze
#

I am 10 years too late for that 🙂

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze i hear you on that

#

i started substituting notification sounds with TTS to stop the dogs from going nuts

dull chasm
#

have a hug and kiss session and rub belly and talk

shy comet

#

its so darn annoying especially when you have a sleeping baby and your GSD starts to go nuts

#

Am I right in my thinking that if I am running multiple things on the same ports that installing and running Nginx provides an application to direct things where they need to be?

river rune
#

You can't run multiple things on the same port

#

Unless they are on different computers

bitter zinc
#

Guys my HASS install just dissapeared from my ubuntu VM

#

like its gone

#

how could that even happen

wet pilot
#

disk failure

green inlet
#

They are on different computers

wet pilot
#

you can have an nginx reverse proxy to do stuff if you want

clear ferry
#

Norway is pretty stable, but we are expecting it to last out 2020 now pepoThink

bitter zinc
#

how could portainer still be running on that VM then?

wet pilot
#

different part of the disk

bitter zinc
#

I had a power failure last night but that shouldnt have just removed the container

#

So how do I stop that from happening in the future?

clear ferry
#

The container is probably just turned off

bitter zinc
#

I just checked its not there at all

green inlet
#

So yea, multiple https servers on different IPs....Nginx reverse proxy would handle it correct

clear ferry
#

Just recreate it then, and link it to the persistent storage you are of course using

river rune
#

@green inlet Yes

wet pilot
#

even better, leave all the other stuff as http and let the proxy handle the cert termination

river rune
#

Yeah, that is what I do

bitter zinc
#

Ok thanks

green inlet
river rune
#

I have one nginx container running in docker and another which gets certs from LetsEncrypt and then if I want something to be available I just have to create it in a container with specific env variables and those 2 containers handle the certs and the routing

wet pilot
#

i use that container

river rune
#

Me too

clear ferry
#

And my axe

#

For multiple domains too, with each their multiple subdomains

green inlet
#

Ok. Docker is 🤯. Where do I start

clear ferry
#

In the right end

green inlet
#

That’s what she said

clear ferry
green inlet
#

I prefer the backend though

river rune
#

A good place to start is by installing docker...

green inlet
#

Yea....not even a clue how to do that. I think I am on the right track though

wet pilot
#

you don't need docker to do it though

#

just install nginx and the lets encrypt certbot

green inlet
#

But that github seems to be the shinizzle

wet pilot
#

the container is pretty slick

green inlet
#

So I will take the time and figure it out.

bitter zinc
#

what does ```
modmanager is enabled WARNING

wet pilot
#

so i have that container acting as my ingress and most of my other containers have no ports exposed outside the docker network

green inlet
#

That is your problem. You need to disable it

bitter zinc
#

what does it do?

green inlet
#

Fuck up your zwave network

#

Look at the zwave docs

bitter zinc
#

well then I dont want it lol

green inlet
#

So all the duckdns URLs point to nqix container

#

Correct

#

It sent my network into a spin till I figured it out.

wet pilot
#

yep, 443 from the outside goes to that nginx container. nginx will proxy to all the other containers on all their weird ports on just http

clear ferry
#

Watching JoJo rabbit now, looking good so far tomLUL

green inlet
#

Or VEnv correct. Don’t need all of them to be in containers

wet pilot
#

yeah, doesn't actually matter. But if you use HA in a venv, it would be worth migrating up to docker based if you want to start using docker for that LE container

green inlet
#

Baby steps man

#

🤩

wet pilot
#

or, you can just install nginx on bare metal and use the LE certbot to handle the certs

last dirge
#

damn mower threw a chain

#

time to order new ones, I guess

green inlet
#

I don’t really understand certs. I get it when it comes to ssh but duckdns doesn’t have my key, or maybe it does and I just don’t know it

clever mortar
#

DuckDNS doesn't, but whatever software you're using for LetsEncrypt does 😉

green inlet
#

So duckdns just goes to the url name under certbot and forwards from there?

light trout
#

duckdns is like a phonebook so humans can remember words instead of numbers

green inlet
#

Yea, I understand dns forwarders.

clever mortar
#

DuckDNS is just DNS

#

Nothing more

green inlet
#

Just the certs I can’t wrap my brain around

clever mortar
#

They're entirely separate

green inlet
#

But certbot has a folder named after duckdns url

clever mortar
#

It's like PB+J for a sandwich - that's two unrelated things in it

#

Right, but that's convenience

#

The folder could be called banana

#

No sane software would do that though 😛

#

The certificate is for your DuckDNS hostname

light trout
#

You sure about that ?

clever mortar
#

No 😛

green inlet
#

So in ssh, there is a key and a key.pub. Same concept in certs?

clever mortar
#

Yup

#

Public/private key encryption in both cases

green inlet
#

So when someone is forwarded by duckdns. It hits my router and is forwarded to the HAss install which knows where the key is? Once it knows the key it encrypts the communication?

clever mortar
#

Ok, so...

green inlet
#

Sorry. Like I said 🤯

clever mortar
#

DuckDNS turns your DNS name into an IP (DNS)
Your computer then connects to that IP - DuckDNS isn't involved in the actual connection

#

Aka, you look up the address in the address book, and then go there yourself

#

Does that make sense?

green inlet
#

Yes

clever mortar
#

Now, SSL is "slightly" more complicated, but ...

#

You connect to the server and start a little chat. As part of that, the server hands over the certificate

#

You check that certificate is valid for the address you used

green inlet
#

Hands it over to who?

clever mortar
#

If it is, you're happy and you start encrypting messages using it

#

To you (the browser)

#

You now have the server's public key (certificate)

#

When you encrypt something with that, only the server can decrypt (with the private key)

green inlet
#

But that’s my point. Anyone who get there gets the key right. Like leaving it under the front porch mat

clever mortar
#

Yes, but no

#

Everybody can encrypt a message for the server

#

Nobody but the server can decrypt it

#

However, SSL solves this by "magic"

#

At this point, you and the server generate some session keys that are used for this session, all in this currently encrypted session

#

Then you use those for the actual communication

#

Reality is much more complicated at this point

#

TLS 1.3 and Diffie-Hellman add more complexity

green inlet
#

Maybe I am looking at it like a password. It isn’t a password to open the door. It merely encrypts traffic going in and out ?

clever mortar
green inlet
#

Ok. I will read links. Thanks.

clever mortar
#

I have the advantage of living through the evolution of a lot of this, which helps

green inlet
#

I have a hard time understanding things that aren’t visual. When I get a moment I will study up on links. Thank you.

clever mortar
#

No worries, happy to chat more about it any time

Asymmetric encryption was and partly still is a really confusing concept for me. Mostly the relationship between the key pair is confusing. I've pretty much given up on trying to perfectly understand it

clever mortar
#

Well, maybe not, but damned if it doesn't seem like it sometimes

green inlet
#

Like battery charge and discharge curves. I gave up trying to figure those out.

#

I need exact science to compute

orchid rose
#

I've also read that quantum computing could cause problems for these types of encryptions but as I don't really understand how they work in the first place, it is kinda hard to follow how that would be a problem

river rune
#

Yeah... in 20 years or so.

orchid rose
#

I get the general gist of it, but I personally like knowing how things work and it's sometimes frustrating when I don't get it 🙂

clever mortar
#

Quantum == You have the answers to the questions you didn't know you had. You just don't know what the question was yet.

river rune
#

iirc the biggest quantum computer they have made so far was an 8 qbit and they would need a 2048 qbit to make it work right iirc

#

I actually just watched a computerphile video on that recenly...

orchid rose

Yeah that's the gist of it that I've gotten

Is my assumption right:

If you start using VLANs it means those networks are on different subnets, which means you need to use your router to communicate between them. Which means there will be a lot more layer 3 routing on your network where before it would have all been layer 2. So your router would be under a lot more load?

wild grove
#

I wouldn't say lot. It's what routers do

#

The hosts will see less broadcast traffic fwiw

#

Even in a flat network hosts still use all layers

rain swift
#

I don't think your home network would create enough routing traffic to matter resource wise.

tidal bronze
#

NAT would consume more than all the rest so nothing to worry about. 😀

green inlet

If I make it there I think it will be. The letsencrypt thing is tough for me. Having one cert in one place that updates for all my webservers seems like a good thing

#

Do I have to create the file structure for the docker compose volumes of the docker compose will do that ?

clever mortar
#

Depends ...

#

Do you want to know where the files are, and control that?

wet pilot
#

Basically, this makes it so your apps don't have to care about certs anymore

clever mortar
#

If so, create the volumes the way you want. If not, don't worry about it

green inlet
#

The docker compose file has folders I do not have.
/home/pi/docker/letsencrypt/config:/config

I think I am close with this docker thing. I got the container up and running and think I did my nginx config correctly but I can’t hit my HAss instance. Where can I look for error messages?

last plaza
#

@restive pond every vacuum comes with a wire. Just connect to power, it becomes connected.

restive pond
#

thanks

#

@last plaza 😂

clever mortar
#

Can you connect directly to it @green inlet ?

green inlet
#

Yes

#

Through 8123

wet pilot
#

docker logs -f container-name

clever mortar
#

Then it's a problem with your NGINX config most likely

green inlet
#

I am pretty sure. Where can I find an example of default

#

That is where everything is config correct

#

Also. Do I something about x-forwarder in my HAss config?

clever mortar
#

Eventually, yes

#

But you don't need to yet

green inlet
#

Tired now. Been looking at it all day. If I hastebin my nginx setup will you look at it? Way above my head

clever mortar
#

Sure

dull chasm
#

shh audio is more important

clever mortar
#

Yes, silent audio is important. I'm glad you agree 😉

dull chasm
#

quality at 1000w is important ...me and @tidal bronze need all the details

green inlet
#

Ok. Will look at yours first and see if it helps.

Quick question: Is HACS still working with 0.107.7? I haven't found any docs on using it with newer versions

forest edge
#

should hope so, i'm using it with 107.7

pearl wind
#

Got it. I guess I can give it a try than .

Any new grimm news for today? Haven't watched tv yet

wet pilot
#

'parrently NC is beating projections to the good side

last plaza
#

cool... I see Alabama is going for state wide shutdown...

last dirge
#

did you hear the news about the federal stockpile being sold to distributors instead of given to states?

last plaza
#

shit.. I did not see that!

last dirge
#

that's why the governors are ending up bidding one another

#

so the stuff that was bought with taxpayer funds is being sold to distributors

#

then states are having to call those distributors and buy them

#

with more taxpayer money obvs

last plaza
#

damn it! probably making shit load of money in the middle

last dirge
#

my 3d printer is too small :/

dull chasm
#

thats what she said

last plaza
#

@last dirge done with the irrigation system?

last dirge
#

no

#

the relay board I got isn't latching

#

I'm trying to teach myself how flip flop circuits work and how I'd implement that so I can add latching to them

junior pagoda
#

does anyone know if it's possible to emulate a bluetooth keyboard for control of a device, like the harmony hub

last plaza
#

why not drive independent relays?

last dirge
#

not enough IO

last plaza
#

have multiple esp8266 boards for each zone

#

and drive relays/solenoids from each of those on demand

last dirge
#

don't want to deal with that much stuff

#

I've already got to multiplex the I2C since all of the sensors have the same damn address

last plaza
#

these parts are cheap, I'd go with the easy and known route 😉

last dirge
#

I don't want the "knowledge" split up like that

last plaza
#

lol

last dirge
#

if I wanted to add a rain sensor, I'd have to add it X times instead of one

last plaza
#

you keep all the "knowledge" in HA, they are just command receivers

last dirge
#

and I'd have to have multiple buck converters

#

which cost about the same as a flip-flop IC

#

so, it's meh

last plaza
#

may be time to 3d-print something that you can replicate

last dirge
#

I'm currently printing a mount for jankycam

last plaza
#

ok... how far is the camera from the 7 segment display?

last dirge
#

2"

#

😉

#

that's literally all the camera will do

last plaza
#

why not just old web cam or something if it is just 2 inches

#

why even spend $35?

last dirge
#

I don't have anything that fit the bill

#

and regardless of what I used, it'd have to have a rigid mount so that the camera's always in the same spot

last plaza
#

oh man, I went to a thrift store and picked up beautiful web cameras for $2 each

last dirge
#

the 7-segment component relies on XY offset

last plaza
#

yes, I saw the 7-segment component

last dirge
#

so you have to tell it where the display starts and ends

#

and if that's not repeatable then it's not so useful

last plaza
#

yup

last dirge
#

I already disassembled the camera to figure out if there was a way I could do it differently

#

there wasn't, really

#

so I drilled holes for bolts and I'm gonna bolt a plastic bracket to it 🙂

last plaza
#

cool

last dirge
#

for the irrigation thing, there's no way in hell I'm programming all of that in hass

#

I'll probably end up feeding state data but that'll probably be it

#

my vacation that's not really a vacation starts Tuesday

#

so I'll have time to figure it out

last plaza
#

lol

last dirge
#

I was supposed to be in the DR

wet pilot
#

What did you end up going with for irrigation? I need to get mine fixed and then add a better controller

last dirge
#

buuuuut

#

@wet pilot for my actual irrigation system I'm using an OpenSprinklerPi

#

for this garden irrigation system I'm rolling my own

wet pilot
#

Ah cool

last dirge
#

SHT20 sensors for soil moisture

#

relays to drive 12V pumps to use water from a catchment tank

wet pilot
#

I have 4 zones and I want to do something better than a simple timer

last dirge
#

OpenSprinkler's been good for me

#

replaced my crappy RainBird system the builder installed

wet pilot
#

Yeah, that's what I have right now
