strange vapor
#

@clear ferry Have you ordered from China recently for IT Toys? Much of a delivery delay?

last dirge
#

wasn't there a component at one point that read 7-segment displays?

clear ferry
#

@strange vapor last order was in January for me

#

I have such a huge backlog of projects

strange vapor
#

I setup a new Desktop PC, but don't have an extra trackball. Using a mouse for the first time in ages, and my wrist is already telling me to cop on!

midnight adder
#

it doesnt read the minus ๐Ÿ˜›

#

darn i see @strange vapor , i have some extra electronics i want to order from china, yet im scared of huge delays as well as a lockdown in the netherlands..

#

Just waiting a couple of months before i will order again..

strange vapor
#

I'm going to chance a small order. Worst that happens is that it's stupidly delayed, and I'm not stuck for it.

midnight adder
#

fair enough

strange vapor
#

ie, it's for a project where there's another project as a requisite step.

midnight adder
#

i helps me not getting distracted though

#

i should focus on a thesis

strange vapor
#

Ah, your in ABS mode? ๐Ÿ˜„

midnight adder
#

whats that

Yes

We call it SOG

#

Or literally: Study Avoiding Behaviour

#

but mann this stuf is way more fun

last dirge
#

anybody have any recommendations for cheapo PoE cameras?

#

resolution doesn't matter, I'm going to print an adapter to stick my BBQ controller on the end of the camera and use that 7segment plugin to read it

trail crag
#

reolink ?

midnight adder
#

reolink are good bang for buck i heard

#

ah ๐Ÿ™‚

last dirge
#

it's actually got features

last dirge
#

I'm serious about not caring about resolution

trail crag
#

nice

trail crag
#

where's the HA integration for the DigiQ DX3? ๐Ÿ˜‹

midnight adder
#

hes making him that himself

last dirge
#

it's got no method for integration

midnight adder
#

with the recognizing the numbers on the device

trail crag
#

is that 3mp cam poe though?

last dirge
#

they've got a newfangled version that's got bluetooth

trail crag
#

I don't know if you're going to find a PoE that isn't at least trying to be more than it is

strange vapor
#

@last dirge My teammate got some system for the BBQ that he could hook up to a Pi and export the temps in a form Prometheus could read. If you want I'll give him a shout tomorrow and see what he got.

midnight adder
#

nvm that camera is not poe indead

#

indeed

midnight adder
#

pi zero with poe

last dirge
#

says it supports ONVIF

midnight adder
#

with camera module

#

could work

last dirge
#

and I see a mounting screw that holds the eyebrow on

last dirge
#

I couldn't see anything on the reolink holding the visor on

last dirge
#

@midnight adder with that adapter I'm halfway to the cost of that other camera

#

plus the cost of the pi zero

midnight adder
#

that adapter doesnt even give internet lol

last dirge
#

pi zero has wifi

#

well, pi zero W has wifi

midnight adder
#

yes but you wanted poe XD

sour escarp
#

FYI reolink cams are delayed on amazon right now by 2-3 weeks but I was able to get a slightly more expensive amcrest with less than 1-week delivery

#

if anyone cares

last dirge
#

@trail crag that's cool

#

but I don't wanna deal with sourcing a blower fan and fabbing all of the stuff to adapt it to the grill

#

and coding the thing

#

what's that technology called to keep stuff from ping-ponging?

midnight adder
#

do you mean anti-aliasing?

last dirge
#

no, it's some three-letter acronym for the feedback loop in code that keeps control of stuff from varying wildly

#

usually used for heaters and stuff like that

#

so for example if it's got a setpoint and it's approaching that setpoint it knows to ramp down rather than heating until it hits the setpoint, seeing that it overruns the setpoint, cutting power to let it cool

midnight adder
#

yeah i see

#

im thinking

last dirge
#

then noticing it's past the setpoint and turning on the heater, but it sags lower because of that

#

rinse-repeat

midnight adder
#

cant seem to come up with it

last plaza
#

@sour escarp I think amazon is extending delivery dates just to be on the safe side. I placed an order, where they told me Iโ€™ll be getting on April 21. They got delivered today.

forest edge
#

they were hiring by the butt loads I thought so frieght is surely moving faster

last dirge

@last dirge

#

came around that link, might catch your interest

last dirge

nah, I ponied up the $200 for that thing that does it automatically

midnight adder

its just the theory behind it

#

fascinating imo

last dirge

I'm dumb at math

junior pumice
#

hello can someone help me? how to "change" light bulb to ceiling light e.g. in Homekit? i tried device_class but couldn't get any result?

sour escarp
#

@last plaza I have noticed the same

#

In regards to amazon shipping and delivering quicker than specified

#

My shipment went out today and I ordered on Sat

last plaza
#

Yup

rain swift
#

I've got some nodemcu's and ESP32's coming wed that said april 23

#

but then other things say shipped and april 22

#

that's some slow shipping

sour escarp
#

any recommendations for irrigation? I will be replacing a standard rainbird that is probably about 12-13 years old

forest edge
#

water hose with running water would be a good choice

sour escarp
#

replace an automatic irrigation system with something manual? no thanks

forest edge
#

how valley of you

sour escarp
#

whatever that means ๐Ÿ™„

tidal bronze
#

I can recommend rainmachine

sour escarp
#

looking up on amazon now heh

tidal bronze
#

You in the US?

sour escarp
#

yes

tidal bronze
#

If you are in CA you can get CIMIS integrated as well into rainmachine

sour escarp
#

CIMIS?

tidal bronze
sour escarp
#

oh ok, i'm in NV

tidal bronze
#

Then you can use darksky and NOAA in the rain mixer ๐Ÿ™‚

sour escarp
#

ok cool, the pro-8 looks pretty good

tidal bronze
#

Yep that's what I use.

sour escarp
#

i live in a desert, that doesn't fly plus most of us don't have grass

tidal bronze
#

I used to have skydrop. One feature I am missing on rainmachine is an alert before watering starts. Just FYI. But as far as capabilities and fine tuning got everything under the sun.

sour escarp
#

ok great, I appreciate the recommendation, I assume you're using it with HA?

tidal bronze
#

Well its added to HA but that's about it. Somethings are great at what they do without any meddling around ๐Ÿ™‚

sour escarp
#

yeah, I was just thinking more along the lines of monitoring

#

unless HA is putting persistent data into the device, I wouldn't want it to be controlled by HA

#

as in, HA programming it and the device still functioning autonomously of HA

tidal bronze
#

App has notifications, up coming 7 days sched etc. If you want to double up on notifications of course you can. But I doubt that will be practical with adaptive cycle skips etc

sour escarp
#

I was thinking something along the lines of using that information to trigger other automations

tidal bronze
#

That you can do all day.

#

You can also trigger zones/programs from buttons etc using HA

sour escarp
#

i have to come up with some reason to use it in HA ๐Ÿ˜›

bitter zinc
#

This may be off topic, but are any of you good with Hyper V on windows server?

#

I need some help, my IPs are all over the place...

sour escarp
#

What do you mean?

#

With virtualization of any kind there are various ways to setup networking.

#

Found this in the garage, need to find something to do with it.

bitter zinc
#

I have a home PC that has Hyper V on it. I made a couple VMs on it, and from the VMs I can ping the devices on the network, but from any other device I cant ping the VMs.

#

@sour escarp

hushed basalt
#

What sort of network are they on

bitter zinc
#

@hushed basalt they are on my home network which is a normal home network no special configuring

#

The network \ is run by google wifi

sour escarp
#

Sounds like in NAT configuration , need to expose the VMs directly the main network, probably host mode

bitter zinc
#

I think I figured it out

sour escarp
#

Ok ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

bitter zinc
#

I was using the default switch, not an external switch

sour escarp
#

There you go

bitter zinc
#

But when I boot the VM now it says no internet

#

@sour escarp

sour escarp
#

Is the VM using DHCP?

bitter zinc
#

Yeah. its not even detecting ethernet at all though

sour escarp
#

Reboot the VM?

bitter zinc
#

I did

sour escarp
#

Check to make sure the VM has that interface attached

bitter zinc
#

In the VMs settings in Hyper V or in the VM windows settings?

sour escarp
#

Hyper V

#

If no interface showing up, chances are itโ€™s not connected to the VM

bitter zinc
#

The external switch is showing up

sour escarp
#

Did you change the IP manually on any of the virtual interfaces that hyper-v added when you installed it? Not that it should matter with host based networking.

bitter zinc
#

no

sour escarp
#

Itโ€™s a windows guest?

bitter zinc
#

Yeah the guest os is windows server 2019

#

Should I enable virtual lan identification?

#

@sour escarp

#

OMG Im an idiot

#

When I was making the new switch I accidentally pressed some disabled wifi card left over instead of wired ethernet lol

#

It works now, thanks for the help guys!

@tidal bronze I think I need to revamp my deck misters

to quote myself "don't run a server on a toy"

last dirge
#

the NUC can't use much more power than the Pi

hushed basalt
#

I'd stuck with your nuc

#

Pis are great toys but they're not servers imo

#

They are literally designed for children

#

Put a linux server distro on your NUC and run docker-compose and you've got a great machine

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot mmmmm servers

wet pilot
#

๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

Pis are great for primary school education lmao

wet pilot
#

"toys"

clear ferry
#

They use them a lot here, they stared an initiative for 7 year olds and up called "lรฆr kidsa koding" or "teach kids code" that is part of mandatory education these days I think

wet pilot
#

nice

clear ferry
#
#

Some of the tasks they are given

#

It's probably a higher level python than I know

midnight adder
#

The only bummer is I use my nuc w/ my tv for 4K 10bit hdr movies

#

No Linux distro will do that

river rune
#

NUCs are toys too... they are designed for office environments where the most they will ever do is run Excel.

midnight adder
#

Itโ€™s toys all the way down

clear ferry
#

10bit hevc is for the same guys who cut their speaker cables on the millimetre Nootnoot

wet pilot
#

No Linux distro
Where you getting that?

midnight adder
#

My brief google search of Linux distros supporting 4K 10bit hdr and nothing coming up ๐Ÿ˜

clear ferry
#

@river rune the nuc wasn't good enough for my office atleast, I just pulled up my laptop instead, 4 screens, 48GB ram and three SSDs

river rune
#

Every linux distro running greater than a 4.0 kernel supports 8K native... That is better than Windows still

#

Sorry, that is 5.0, not 4.0

midnight adder
#

I canโ€™t find much about 10bit or HDR though

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot ooof those opengl gears give me flashbacks to 2003

wet pilot
#

lol

clear ferry
wet pilot
#

looks like wayland picked up HDR support in 2019 as well

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot wife still has no WFH working?

wet pilot
#

"working" still no real guidance from the school board

#

but trying to meet with her students

clear ferry
#

I love the fact that the US really unfolds as a third world country at this time, wife has some pregnancy friends from Reddit that have started school again, and hardly any of them have internet at home, so they can't do remote studies anyway, and cell phone providers in the US seem to ban the use of Mobile hotspots unless you pay for it pepoThink

river rune
#

Yeah, parts of the US don't have good internet...

#

And yes, most contract providers disable hotspot use unless you have a more expensive plan

clear ferry
#

We have 4g coverage in 99% of the country or something, so those who cannot get fiber access can still use 4g

#

And for the last 1% those can still use the old 450mhz network that can deliver decent speeds too

river rune
#

Your country is also only the size of Montana... with 5 times the population density.

clear ferry
#

Yes, but with a challenging topography and other challenges lmao

wet pilot
#

though i wouldn't give the FCC any credit

#

US Gov is bad and should feel bad

#

on many levels

#

but they don't because "power"

clear ferry
#

Remember reading a few years ago that dial up was still prominent in the us

river rune
#

It's not

#

I mean it still exists... but it's not prominent

wet pilot
#

some areas maybe, but its hard to get copper in some places these days

#

a lot of areas are ripping it up

river rune
#

Unless you are talking credit card machines. Then yes it is still prominent

wet pilot
#

lol

clear ferry
#

A 2013 report by theย Pew Research Centerย indicated that three percent of Americans were still using a dial-up connection โ€” a small, but significant slice of the population.

wet pilot
#

those are fun, especially when they do it over a cell network

river rune
#

3% isn't significant

clear ferry
#

Three percent was lower than I remembered lmao

#

But still a lot with "such a big country"

wet pilot
#

its still 9.8M people

clear ferry
#

"the size of usa"

#

Can't just use "size of Montana" the other way around lmao

river rune
#

statistical significance is generally set at 5%

#

But can vary depending

clear ferry
#

I think we stopped offering analoge phones and dialup sometime in 2005 if memory serves right

river rune
#

That is one of the problems with being the forerunners for stuff like that. Once you have the infrastructure in place it is hard to go back and change it later...

wet pilot
river rune
#

Alaska was way behind on technology but because we don't have all the existing infrastructure that the rest of the country has we are actually ahead of most places in the US now because we just installed the newer technology as we were building up.

clear ferry
#

Considering how many people don't seem to have internet at home, those numbers seem high

wet pilot
#

i'm trying to find a source that isn't an industry paper

clear ferry
#

They probably ignore those who don't have at all

#

Because those would ruin the numbers

wet pilot
#

problem is, FCC is run by a telco shill so we can't trust their data

clear ferry
#

Oh just potential

wet pilot
#

what little they post at all

clear ferry
#

Not what people have

#

That's a ... Strange metric

wet pilot
#

i thought you misspelled that on purpose ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry

btw you guys may know this, is missing out on thunderbolt 3 a dealbreaker on a laptop?

#

yes until the new set of mobile processors that are currently rolling out

river rune

Are you going to use a dock with it?

But our tests are 6 months old, maybe some new things coming. AMD is doing well currently.

#

possibly yes @river rune

without thunderbolt today is useless for me atleast

USB-C (Power Delivery) for DC In

I use it at most customer meetings for docking to meeting rooms, and at home for my office

the HP TB Dock G2 is really good

midnight adder

only difference is that thunderbolt can file share at 40gbit

and 2 4k monitors

river rune
#

If you are going to use a dock then I would say it is a requirement.

midnight adder
#

hmm

river rune
#

If you want to run ethernet, monitor and external storage through a dock then you kinda need TB3

midnight adder
#

good point

#

currently im using a desktop and laptop on the go but i want 1 as a whole lol

#

but usb 4 is coming later this year

oh does it

i thought i read yesterday some dont

usb3 is a standard so

but hp's does

yeah ikr

river rune

It depends on the driver it uses

until 4 later this year, so i get why intel now gives out how tb3 works

WE THE PEOPLE of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union ...

They weren't trying to found a country but a Union of sovereign States which as the wendover production video outlines is what the EU is currently.

There is one part in RLL's video that is incorrect. He says that states don't have the power to override the Federal Government's laws. Technically they do based on the US Constitution. But most people just ignore that part. (10th Admendment)

Since 1893, the legal definition of the foot in the United States has been based on the meter. The definition adopted at that time was the one specified by Congress in 1866, as 1 foot = 1200/3937 meter exactly (or 1 foot = 0.304 800 6 meter approximately). In 1959, the relationship of the foot to the meter was officially refined as 1 foot = 0.304 8 meter exactly. This change was made to support United States industry and international trade. It resolved a long-standing discrepancy with the definition used by different organizations within the United States and in other countries.

#

Yo

tidal bronze
#

Get the kit

last dirge
#

they didn't use the right crimper and the connector's flat instead of round and it won't go into a breadboard

#

what's that called though?

#

ferrule crimper?

tidal bronze
#

Yes comes with the connectors

tame moss
#

Wow I'm very sad about dark sky

last dirge
#

it's been dead a while now hasn't it?

tame moss
#

Looks like I'm about to cancel my sub.

#

Nah, I use it daily on my android

last dirge
#

oh, I'm thinking of wunderground

#

did TWC buy Darksky too?

tame moss
#

Probably the best weather app I've used, welp I guess all things come to an end someday

#

Not sure.

river rune
#

Wunderground was bought by IBM

#

I still use it as my primary

last dirge
#

I thought TWC bought them and shut it down

river rune
#

No

last dirge
#

"Dark Sky has joined Apple"

river rune
#

TWC is owned by IBM also

last dirge
#

that I didn't know

river rune
#

But WU is still alive and very active

last plaza
#

TWC is owned by IBM

last dirge
#

you sure about that?

last plaza
#

๐Ÿ’ฏ

last dirge
river rune
last plaza
#

let me check my iPad - It says powered by IBM or some shit like that

#

come to think of it, that's the only IBM app I have it running on my iPad - Great Job, IBM!!!

river rune
#

Oh... TWC was bought from IBM by the Weather Group but the brand is still licensed from IBM

#

Same with WU

#

And they still run on the IBM cloud so really it is just semantics

#

But to answer the original question, No WU is not dead. It is still one of the more accurate weather apps

last plaza
#

all that matters is that they got your data - whether they make money on the weather or not

forest edge
#

I like how the co-founder of Dark Sky says their goal is to provide the world and as many people possible the service and say they couldn't think of any better way than to side with Apple yet apple's user base is a drop in the bucket compared to androids lol

wet pilot
#

their goal is to make money

#

full stop

forest edge
#

lol

last dirge
#

AKA "they paid me a LOT to say this"

wet pilot
#

they did that and screwed over most of their user-base

forest edge
#

goal was to kill off thier project

last dirge
#

"hey, our data is suddenly significantly less accurate"

pure vine
#

It's like when Microsoft brought Skype

pallid nest
#

So where is everyone going now that Dark Sky is shutting down the API and WUnderground's isn't available any more either?

last dirge
#

@last plaza what's the secret to getting the goggles to let go of the lens?

last plaza
#

just pull down hard

#

a.k.a use force

river rune
#

Where are people getting that wunderground isn't available anymore?

last plaza
#

I used it last night, and it was fantastic!

last dirge
#

I thought WU killed their API access to the hyper localized stuff like a year ago

river rune
#

public access yes

pallid nest
#

*free API access.

river rune
#

But if you have a station then you can still access it

pallid nest
#

Well I do not.

last dirge
#

@last plaza those glasses are SUPER uncomfortable as a headband

pallid nest
#

So it is shut down for me.

last dirge
#

@river rune but the data they give you on the API isn't what it was before

last plaza
#

@last dirge really? they were a bit loose

last dirge
#

I can't wear them as glasses

#

my glasses are apparently completely the wrong shape

#

plus my tinnitus devices

#

gets kinda crowded

pallid nest
#

SMH, Yahoo's API is shut down too.

last plaza
#

plus my tinnitus devices
@last dirge what are those? never heard of them

pallid nest
#

NWS or OpenWeather then, I guess.

last dirge
#

@last plaza hearing aids

#

they just play customized white noise into my head

#

I'm not sure the therapy is working as intended

last plaza
#

I have tinnitus, but not severe... some days it is more than usual

last dirge
#

something happened last year that made mine change drastically

#

so I started seeing if there was something I could do about it

#

turns out, maybe there is

last plaza
#

stress causes it go high, sleeplessness...etc

last dirge
#

none of that's happening in the world right now ๐Ÿ˜‰

last plaza
#

I agree

#

lol

last dirge
#

well shit

#

both of my SHT20s have the same address according to the I2c scanner sketch

tidal bronze
#

Finally an eventful day at home ๐Ÿ™‚ guy wonders into the wrong neighborhood and 7 cop cars, 2 hours and counting. Tax dollars at work ๐Ÿ™‚

clever mortar
#

Here it's big news if we see any police

clear ferry
#

I've seen police in my neighborhood twice in 12 years

#

Both times just patrolling due to news about poles stealing tires

clever mortar
#

I've seen them three, four times in the last 6 years. Two of those were for the same car accident (that happened elsewhere)

tidal bronze
#

All this for 1 guy sitting down on the curb

clear ferry
#

Yeah, any armed police would be in the news for three days and the cops would be under investigation for a month

clever mortar
#

Armed police here are either in an airport, or responding to a once-in-a-lifetime event

clear ferry
#

There is only armed police at the airport if there is a bomb threat

river rune
#

I checked out next to an armed officer a couple weeks ago at the grocery store...

clever mortar
#

Not every airport has them here, just the larger/international ones

#

I suspect it's to reassure scare the tourists

clear ferry
#

The police have been armed at times if we have gotten specific threats from terror organizations, but then not openly carrying

tidal bronze
#

I feel the guy has mental issues since he is not answering the cops. Guess security called the cops since no stranger supposed to be here.

#

Nice to have audio on all the cameras ๐Ÿ™‚

clever mortar
clear ferry
#

We just don't need it because we can talk to people no

clever mortar
#

Talking is just the verbal version of percussive maintenance?

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze some dude walked into your neighborhood and farted and armed police showed up?

tidal bronze
#

Yep basically.

forest edge
#

and you have how much invested in security and surveillance? lol

clear ferry
#

Fancy neighborhood

#

Or just muuuuurica

last plaza
#

This is a free country. Thatโ€™s why we have too many police on the roads.

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge I don't have invested in security. I will find out how the guy got in the first place. ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

lol

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze some dude walked into your neighborhood and farted and armed police showed up?
@forest edge ...and @tidal bronze has infrared cameras to prove that.

forest edge
#

lol

vestal reef
#

sorry to disturb your convo guys, but I got a quick question.. I'm trying to do some custom css styling, but what is the best way to find the correct css tag ? using trial and error but i've tried dozens of options and they all don't work. tried right click copy selector but that wont work

tidal bronze
#

Looks like patrol called the cops. @forest edge

brisk glen
last plaza
#

@vestal reef #frontend-archived would be the best place to ask that question. Here you will only find mediocre people who are not good for anything but talk.

brisk glen
#

Holy shit

last dirge
#

@vestal reef the selectors in the inspector are always way too fragile

tidal bronze
#

@brisk glen pretty late to the party

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze seems like you'll never get to test any of your outdoor motion sensors and booby traps lol

brisk glen
#

Rip dark sky api? Hello new iOS weather app?

last plaza
#

Weโ€™ve beaten that to death already

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge unfortunately no. ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

@brisk glen apple once again proving it's covid-19 in the punch bowl

brisk glen
#

I think they are just tired of their sucky weather app

last plaza
#

Just like their maps.

brisk glen
#

Well, since the new rollout, Apple Maps has been good

tidal bronze
#

So yep it's a medical call now. ๐Ÿ™‚ @forest edge I will let you know if I ever get to use my traps ๐Ÿ™‚

clear ferry
#

Apple๐Ÿคข ๐Ÿคข

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze doubt you'll ever get to. seems like it a rabbit was to stumble within 100 feet of your neighborhood swat would be called in

brisk glen
#

Lol

tidal bronze
#

I was just talking to one of the officers, mental health task force is running 4 hours behind so they had to wait
