28 years later and my wife is still with me....pretty regularly, I walk into the bathroom totally naked, while she is doing her make-up, and do some crazy dance. Other days, she tells me to f-off and I moon her. Good women are hard to find.

scenic radish
#

that...is an image i didn't need

green inlet
#

Nobody does, but I am hung like a bear cub

scenic radish
#

i thought you were gonna say "because you can barely see it"

green inlet
#

She just rolls her eyes and keeps on doing what she is doing

scenic radish
#

love it

green inlet
#

And I am going to use that boofa line sometime next week

scenic radish
#

60% of the time it works, every time

tidal bronze
#

@green inlet you good ?πŸ˜„

forest edge
#

I think he suspects the mailman might be hiding in the shower

tidal bronze
#

Oh.

green inlet
#

Me? Totally 🀣

tidal bronze
#

Esxi good ?

green inlet
#

πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

#

That’s prob going to be a while but I think so

tidal bronze
#

Ha should be running now. Few minutes is all that it takes

green inlet
#

I just learned the difference between bare metal and hypervisor

#

I google stuff said in here all the time

#

Waiting for another stick of memory and possible the HA zwave update

tidal bronze
#

Nuc what gen?

green inlet
#

7th gen i7

#

Do you get sensor data with your NUC

tidal bronze
#

Everything but temp

green inlet
#

Hmmm....I can’t get anything.

tidal bronze
#

I use snmp

#

Straight from esxi

#

Going to zabbix

green inlet
#

Hmm...crap. More googling

#

Lmao

#

But under the monitor tab of esxi?

tidal bronze
#

You have to enable snmp

green inlet
#

Ok, will look for that

#

Need to get ssh keys setup also

tidal bronze
#

Ha is meh when it comes to infrastructure monitoring

#

Got to jump through million Hoops to get something simple done

green inlet
#

Looks like the os installed keys but it was only a quick glance

#

I use nagios

tidal bronze
#

Awesome. Use that too. But a fan of zabbix

green inlet
#

Auh, ok, yes, now that rings a bell.

tidal bronze
#

Everything going to Slack

#

Run the vmware template give it a few minutes and you are golden. πŸ˜€

green inlet
#

I hit create vm and saw the wizard. All my raspis are static and several systems built around their IP. Can I get a vm up on one ip and change it later once I take down what the vm replaces?

tidal bronze
#

Of course.

#

You dan do that all day.

#

Spin up 15 copies of HA as well. Lol

#

The i7 can take a beating. You will love it

green inlet
#

Several scenarios have gone through my head. Pretty easy to run, production, beta, and dev vms right. All off the same zwave stick

tidal bronze
#

Hmm no, usb assigned to VM cant be shared

#

You can so a VM with serial to sock or serial to TCP. Plenty of guides.

#

Or run HA remote so you can share the stick with multiple VMs

green inlet
#

Ok, I will figure it out. Just got rid of a couple of the setup errors. Next is sensors, ssh keys, possible nagios on the host?

tidal bronze
#

Nagios should be run on a separate system, at least that's my method.

hushed basalt
#

Wooh

#

Got my name resolution working

#

And I now officially have a 3 node cluster

#

Only took six months

forest edge
#

lol

tidal bronze
#

Lmao

forest edge
#

you pc's guuud

hushed basalt
#

I wish I had a disposable OS infrastructure though

#

I don't like how these nodes have become pets

tidal bronze
#

@green inlet do you run a nas?

#

If you do run snmp monitoring on that.

green inlet
#

@tidal bronze , I have nagios on a ODroid

tidal bronze
#

Oh perfect.

green inlet
#

Funny you ask, I need to look into a new NAS setup and DD-WRT changed something up and jacked up my NAS

tidal bronze
#

I have a separate synology for all that kind of stuff. Best thing is they have vmware support. Active business backup grabs and snapshots anything on esxi. Plus you can spin up backups on syno itself with VM machine. The best pair ever.

hushed basalt
#

I have a love hate relationship with my syno

tidal bronze
#

I have no idea how they offer it for free. But simply fantastic.

#

Puts veem to shame

hushed basalt
#

But when I move everything to my k8s cluster it will just become a simple storage appliance, which should ease some of that pain

tidal bronze
#

I run 3 synology units at home and 2 remote replication units.

green inlet
#

Yea, I have three 4 disk Synology boxes at work that have been powered off for prob 6 months.

tidal bronze
#

Grab them if they are intel 😜

#

ARM synology is not great for our use.

green inlet
#

I always figure something out 🀣

tidal bronze
#

Replication is critical for me because of earthquakes 🀣

#

@forest edge guess if I for your underground brew-ha-ha can cutdown on that.

forest edge
#

hey if you go underground and stabilize it with springs and place a dry moat around it you'll be safer than everyone else

tidal bronze
#

So you're saying that earthquakes are starting up in the sky

forest edge
#

no no thats how they quake proof buildings, the use of them being supported on springs

tidal bronze
#

That's how we have it

forest edge
#

yea but your still open to fire

tidal bronze
#

I can never win with you oh well

forest edge
#

lol

#

telling you, you do, start the trend all your bneighbors will too

#

can't quite figure out why a chinese company would use a brazilian ntp server for time correcting lol

tidal bronze
#

They handle their waxes πŸ€”

green inlet
#

My first quake in San Diego blew my mind. We woke up to the chandelier above our bed swinging from side to side. My wife was like, wtf is going on. I was like, I think an earthquake

shy comet
#

the last earthquake we had in cali was a very long one...45 seconds IIRC and i was a couple hundred miles away

#

last summer actually

green inlet
#

Over on the right coast we deal with tornados. Much scarier to me. And sink holes.

tidal bronze
#

@shy comet last night ?

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze naw this was the one that was in central cali

tidal bronze
#

Oh

hushed basalt
#

We don't have any of that

#

For where I live, getting your hardware stolen is orders of magnitude more likely than a natural disastee

#

Then house fire would be the second

#

Then natural disasters would be wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down the list of probabilities

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

@hushed basalt stolen ?

#

@forest edge I want that bed.

#

What a stressful day, still at the vet since 4AM.

forest edge
#

oh no, got a pet thats sick?

tidal bronze
#

Yes just went into emergency surgery

forest edge
#

I been dealing with sick pets since thanksgivving one after another. been a shit winter

tidal bronze
#

I am sorry to hear that. Been like 2 weeks for me

forest edge
#

dog or cat?

#

mines been cats

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

schnazer or however thats spelled

tidal bronze
#

Giant schnauzer yes.

forest edge
#

those are good dogs

tidal bronze
#

Yes indeed. My best buddy.

forest edge
#

I hope everything goes good

tidal bronze
#

Thank you man. I wouldn't know what to do if something goes wrong.

forest edge
#

we spent 9k on surgery for our cat from thanksgiving to Christmas, had a cancer mass in his colon and it was insane

tidal bronze
#

9k bill just today.

forest edge
#

thankfully he came out alright, even grumpier than before it all happened but holy hell was that expensive

tidal bronze
#

It's insane.

forest edge
#

if vets are gonna start charging human prices i think our insurances should start covering our pets as well lol

tidal bronze
#

I agree 100%

#

I think they pick randomly from drop downs. Had to go back and forth today. Had a line item for call in tech. I am like wtf?

forest edge
#

this an emergency hospital through a school or normal pet hospital?

tidal bronze
#

24 hospital, needs a board certified surgeon for this procedure

forest edge
#

we ended up taking our cat to MU which is 2 hours from where I live because they said the overall cost would be cheaper (what a lie that was) it was crazy dealing with the students and then with the senior actual surgeon

tidal bronze
#

I dealt with 3 vet hospitals in a week. Internal medicine is not everywhere.

#

There's ultrasound and then formal ultrasound wth

forest edge
#

not heard of formal version of that

tidal bronze
#

Exactly.

#

Supposedly an internist can read ultrasound better than a DR.

#

All sounds crap to me. Then again at times like this seems like one gotta take it up the shorts.

forest edge
#

all crap imo, test after expensive test that seem to yield nothing new than you already know then in the end they still tell you it's a crap shoot

#

and nothing you can do, it's not like we're not going to do whatever we can to get our pets back

tidal bronze
#

9 years ago he hot misdiagnosed at the ER, I took him home went through his entire body to find an insect bite. ER said constipation after scan. From that onwards I am skeptic. Did a charge back almost went to courts till they apologized.

hushed basalt
#

@tidal bronze in terms of data loss

tidal bronze
#

Got them to pay the next vets bill as well.

hushed basalt
#

Theft is 10000 times more likely to be the cause

#

As in physically stolen

forest edge
#

many won't do that and they bank on that

#

good thing your diligent about it. i think if more were than they wouldn't be so quick to do and suggest stupid shit

tidal bronze
#

I raised hell like no tomorrow. Even today consulted 2 more surgeons before saying ok.

forest edge
#

well I need a break from that shit, spending a fortune on one and losing another I need a summer vet free lol

wet pilot
forest edge
#

I wouldn't want to be a software person for something like NASA or airplanes. my grandfather was an aviation engineer for TWA and the stories he would tell would just be too much stress for me lol

wet pilot
#

yeah, that would definitely be high pressure

#

my team's goal for line coverage is 80%. I don't think that would fly (pun intended) for this

forest edge
#

lol EU thinks it's gonna be able to force apple to change their iphones to have removable batteries?

last dirge
#

you mean like they have for every single other consumer device?

#

you can't sell a device without a removable battery in the EU due to recycling laws

#

Amazon even redesigned their dash/IoT buttons so they could sell them there

#

1st gen had a soldered battery, 2nd gen had a removeable one

clear ferry
#

Contrary to muurica belief, the EU is a big market πŸ’©

forest edge
#

a big shit market?

scenic radish
#

A big market shit apparently

forest edge
#

oh someone made a coronavirus tracker, maybe we should make it a FORBIDDEN_TOPIC addon lol

#

get notifications everytime a new report comes in or the totals rise

#

have it flicker all the lights in your home if a report in your county shows up lmao

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge yep that's the only thing missing now.

forest edge
#

I have no doubt some would use it lol

tidal bronze
#

Even though very interesting at first, years ago, 99% of notification stuff is removed on mine now. Gets old quick. Even once in a blue moon TTS feels like too much. Lol.

clear ferry
#

I use notifications mostly to remind me to do stuff

#

Like close the garage door and take out the recyclables

tidal bronze
#

Hmm automated. I don't have trash issues. Cleaners do that clock work.

clear ferry
#

No automated garage doors with babies in the house, and definitely not going to pay someone to take out my trash lmao

tidal bronze
#

Use IR and motion combo. Pretty sure your Norwegian garages have pressure sensors as a precautionary measure. I wish I had the time to clean the place. They are here every week. Obviously no one would pay someone to take out trash only. Unless that's a thing in Norway πŸ˜‚

forest edge
#

would be too worried of shit coming up missing to allow someone to clean my home lol

clear ferry
#

Yeah, the only people who have cleaners in Norway is the actual upper class or people who think they are but in reality only have so much credit card debt they are on the verge of bankruptcy

tidal bronze
#

It's been like this for last 15 years or more. Never had an issue.

#

Its pretty common in LA.

clear ferry
#

And I don't think I have ever seen a garage door with a pressure sensor , it should be standard though

forest edge
#

lol immgrants

#

really atx?

#

nothing prevent your garage doors from crushing shit?

tidal bronze
#

That's nuts. Not having pressure sensors.

clear ferry
#

Never seen one stop, except the industrial ones

tidal bronze
#

Lmao.

forest edge
#

lol norway tech for ya

tidal bronze
#

It's illegal to install one without here.

forest edge
#

20 years still behind on some shit apparently

tidal bronze
#

Basic stuff at that.

#

This is why they go bankrupt not because of cleaning the house. Lmao.

clear ferry
#

Think mine has a built-in breakage though, because the cogwheels are so small they would break if there was sufficient resistance πŸ’©

forest edge
#

lol

#

saftey through cheap design.. love it

clear ferry
#

It is a American garage door opener

#

So....

forest edge
#

can't be

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge taking missing shit, believe it or not if I misplace something I call them to find out where I left my shit.

forest edge
#

unless it's ebayed older lol

clear ferry
#

Craftsman something

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze the cleaning crew?

tidal bronze
#

Yep.

forest edge
#

lol

#

having the cleaners hunt for your misplaced keys hehe

tidal bronze
#

Like family

clear ferry
#

La familia

#

You mean

tidal bronze
#

Si

clear ferry
#

πŸ’©

forest edge
#

"yes, I seem to have lost mt stool sample, could you please locate it for me?"

clear ferry
#

in the fridge senΓ΅r

tidal bronze
#

@clear ferry remember i told you we don't come up with everything, BUT everything that matters in YOUR LIFE😜

forest edge
#

@clear ferry our garage doors have had pressure sensors aas well as trip sensors since the 80's so whatever you have either predates that or is some knockoff lol

clear ferry
#

Early 90s model craftsman handgesture

forest edge
#

sure it's called craftsman and not crapsman?

clear ferry
tidal bronze
#

You should seriously consider installing one because of your little one, jokes aside.

clear ferry
#

I should replace it because it is noisy and shuddy as hell, poor American craftsmanship mildpanic

#

So a new one would probably have it

tidal bronze
#

Do yours have a speed ramp at stops ?

clear ferry
#

Woot

tidal bronze
#

If pressure sensor is there it ramps the speed down to a crawling stop. Same for upper stop. Mine does not slam.

#

Not supposed to

clear ferry
#

Mine has two wheels I turn to specify where top and bottom is, then a rolling pin guides a metal pin back an forth and creates a short to stop it at either end

#

A very simple design

tidal bronze
#

Oh reed contacts. That's really really old.

forest edge
#

lol

#

it runs off steam don't it

clear ferry
#

Yeah, same on all liftmaster, craftsman, Chamberlain from the 80s to early 2000s I believe

forest edge
#

atx all bashing something that actually belongs in a museum

tidal bronze
#

I should replace it because it is noisy and shuddy as hell, poor American craftsmanship mildpanic
@clear ferry poor craftsmanship? Shit is running like butter for the last 63 years right? Why complain?

clear ferry
#

I have replaced the cogwheels twice the last 10 years because they get worn out πŸ’©

#

And butter is a strong word

tidal bronze
#

Cost of opening and closing

clear ferry
#

It's like a run over cat trying to dance flamenco when opening

tidal bronze
#

This is what happens when you remove ADSL all at once and install fiber. They forget the garage doors 😜

forest edge
#

honestly i think the newer garage door openers are crap

clear ferry
#

Norwegians are just cheap skates, we seldom replace something that isn't completely broken

forest edge
#

quality is just shit in every product these days

#

er last decade or so lol

tidal bronze
#

I agree.

forest edge
#

don't ever buy a rubber belt driven garage door opener

clear ferry
#

@forest edge were you produced in the last decade you say? lmao YeetRow

forest edge
#

the coil ones are good, although way more fo a pain for a single homeowner to maintence/replace but still reliable

#

I predate when shit went to crap

#

in my day when you wanted wooden furniture people still actually made it, not machines in a factory lol

clear ferry
#

Oh, you are a supercentential, I see

forest edge
#

@clear ferry you wouldn't know what to do with yourself if you had my childhood.. no computers, no internet, no cellphones

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

is that a vritical garage door opener?

tidal bronze
#

Yes.

clear ferry
#

Pff we didn't have internet in Norway until I was like 8 lmao

forest edge
#

it installs next to the door?

tidal bronze
#

Yes

forest edge
#

don't think i ever seen that before

#

that has to be a coil spring then

tidal bronze
#

Yes.

#

Don't know if it's running even. Lol.

#

Other than the wood crackling

forest edge
#

I'd have to see it in action but the thought of taking away the above arm and motor sounds nice

clear ferry
#

Interesting, that looked easy to install

tidal bronze
#

Comes with battery backup as well.

clear ferry
#

But no go for my door, would need to buy a new door, don't think I've ever seen that torsion based top in Norway, we have chain driven ones only in residential

#

Afaik

tidal bronze
#

Chain is pretty common here as well. Had them in my other 2 houses.

forest edge
#

hmm that opener only uses the guide wires to open and close it

#

that means if those cables broke that door would come down like a rock

tidal bronze
#

No if the spring broke.

forest edge
#

the wores is what latches on the door at the bottom

#

wires

#

they are the weak link

tidal bronze
#

Spring usually breaks at opening pretty rare.

forest edge
#

on traditional doors the motor and arm above would still hold the door when those wires break

#

I didn't see anything mentioned, but maybe there is an additional saftey thing in place?

tidal bronze
#

Don't need the wires. The doors are so well balanced on the spring you can open close with finger.

#

That's how the pressure sensor works.

forest edge
#

the wires are what connect the sprint to the door

#

*spring

tidal bronze
#

That's the tension retainer.

steel urchin
#

Retainer tensioner

tidal bronze
#

Stand corrected.

steel urchin
#

🀣 jk I'm just having a silly night

forest edge
#

I call them guide wires, but call them whatever

#

but they are what connect the spring to the door, they also used on tradtional doors for the horizobntal springs

steel urchin
#

And yes @forest edge my doorbell is working fine

forest edge
#

lol 2 days later he answers

steel urchin
#

Oh did you ask?

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge yep they are wooden doors.

steel urchin
#

Dude the last week has been like sex while camping

#

In tents

clear ferry
forest edge
#

@tidal bronze next time your around them look for something else that connects to the door that would prevent it from slamming down in the case of those wires snapping. I would imagine they would have came up with something

steel urchin
#

Between the stock market and housing, I'm a mess lol

clear ferry
#

Stocks presidentsleeper

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge will do but what I read is that strain on upward movement is what snaps it at end of life ot deformity

forest edge
#

on coil spring doors the spring is what usually gives

#

BUT

tidal bronze
#

I do understand the reasoning there but of well that's what lawyers are for.

forest edge
#

its rarer then say traditional doors

tidal bronze
#

Agreed.

forest edge
#

although my door is old so my guide/tension wires are pretty small lol, yours is probably thick

tidal bronze
#

That's what she said but I will double check 😜

forest edge
#

I haven't heard too many cases of the wires snapping, but they do, atleast my old ass one sizes ones do

#

@steel urchin lose all your monnies to the stock market?

steel urchin
#

A lil bit, but not the end of the world. Plus while it's all down you gotta toss a bit in here n there

tidal bronze
#

Now you made me curious since one of the garage doors is our main in/out of the house so opens and closes so many times a day. Will check tomorrow. @forest edge

forest edge
#

lol didn't mean to worry you but if there is no secondary catch to prevent the door from slamming i would sure look into one

steel urchin
#

I've had springs go out on 4 garage doors, one went through 3 windows

forest edge
#

side benifit of a tradiional garage door opener, the motor and arm become that secondary catch

#

@steel urchin thats why you install security wire through the springs to prevent the pieces from flying away

tidal bronze
#

Broke 1 spring on 1 of the doors few months back. Just heard it pop. That's it. But going throw windows ?

steel urchin
#

Heh it did though

forest edge
#

hes talking about horizontal traditional springs

tidal bronze
#

Oh.

steel urchin
#

I just remember waking you and 3 windows were gone, and lots of little bits of spring

forest edge
#

I have a 3/8's braided metal wire ran through the middle of mine and tied off on both ends, nothing is going anywhere when they break lol

steel urchin
#

It sucked, that's for sure

forest edge
#

could have been worse, someone could have gotten hurt

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge

#

I will check cable thickness tomorrow.

forest edge
#

you use the myq thing?

tidal bronze
#

You nuts. Come on now.

#

Node + espeasy always.

forest edge
#

yea that video showed nothing additional for the wire either. it's likely something you shouldn't really need to worry about especially the only danger comes into play while the door is open

tidal bronze
#

I will find out one way or the other

clear ferry
#

Wish my was that fast

forest edge
#

not een sure what you could even use as a secondary catch, rigging a static line isn't going to slow it down or anything lol

tidal bronze
#

I can ask my buddy to come over run some tests. My dogs hang around there, don't care much about people. 😜

forest edge
#

if the braided line is thicker than 1/8th then i wouldn't worry about it at all

tidal bronze
#

Of course

forest edge
#

it's not a literal 1/8th but mine is close to that

#

but then my wires don't support the door, the arm does

tidal bronze
#

The spring supports the door.

forest edge
#

yea on yours

#

traditional doors work by an equal balance

#

all the springs do is "lighten" the load

tidal bronze
#

Copy.

forest edge
#

do you have that lock thing as well?

#

that automatic door lock

tidal bronze
#

No, you mean the side latch. ?

forest edge
#

yea one of the vvideos showed it, can be manually turned but also is automatic locking when door is close,d looked like a huge deadbolt

tidal bronze
#

Oh. That's cool. Dont lock anything at my place though. πŸ˜„

forest edge
#

have you ever tried lifting your door while it's closed?

tidal bronze
#

No chance.

forest edge
#

no handles?

tidal bronze
#

Nopes

forest edge
#

mine has inside handle

tidal bronze
#

If disengage can lift with a finger. So I think that's why no handle.

forest edge
#

ah

#

was curious what the resistance was with the motor being on the side and only using the wires

tidal bronze
#

Its featherweight. But if slightly off balance and the unit complaints.

forest edge
#

lol

#

you probably got those double wide doors too?

tidal bronze
#

Yes

#

I think there is very little torque on those motors. Everything is based on balance.

forest edge
#

thats why the wood creaks lol

#

you should try lifting it from the outside using pressure (obvviously don't break anything) but get a sense just how secure that motor makes the door from potential intruders

#

one of my barns has a 20ft high by 14ft wide garage door with a coil spring and a simple push lock on one side, if I was to "rock" the door up and down by momentum alone I could snap the side lock and raise the door. it dosen't have an outside handle either

#

if there was anything in there i would certianly look for a diffrent means of locking it lol

tidal bronze
#

I will check it. All that's valuable to me is there in the garage. But its gated, patrolled. Dont lock anything to be honest. To see someone outside even a neighbor is every rare thing. Amazon stuff is outside the front door for days sometimes. No one goes that way. πŸ˜€ Theft does not even cross my mind. But as always, you can never say never. Dont even have a door bell lol.

forest edge
#

wtf must be nice. what do you mean by patrolled? lol

#

you live in a gated community?

tidal bronze
#

Yes.

forest edge
#

ah

#

yea you'll likely never have to worry about it.. but then if you watch movies you will know even you people will get random acts of violence lol jk

tidal bronze
#

Trust me there's always that possibilty. I always believe no matter what you have a 2x4 can supersede that anyday.

forest edge
#

lol

#

yea theres no way to completely stop someone, hell they couldn't even on the movie the purge and those homes locked up like tanks lol

tidal bronze
#

Yes exactly. I always take security with a grain salt. If someone wants it bad enough they will take it. That's what insurance is for. As long no bodily harm is done they can take anything they want.

forest edge
#

and everything of value is the garage you say? ... lmao

tidal bronze
#

Yes.

forest edge
#

yup right on que, atx chiming in while putting on his brown cheese face mask

clear ferry
#

I don't think I know anyone who has had a break in ever pepoThink

tidal bronze
#

Neither do I

forest edge
#

I have, it sucks

#

I had my farm house (while vacant at the time) broken in

tidal bronze
#

I obviously dont count the the dumb friends that leave an iPad in an unlocked car in LA

forest edge
#

lol

clear ferry
#

A druggy stole the cd player out of my car once, but that was my fault for not locking the car

tidal bronze
#

Those are normal.

forest edge
#

a cd player?

#

jesus talk about desperate

clear ferry
#

This was.. in 2003

#

πŸ’©

forest edge
#

I bet if you left a ham sandwhich they would have taken that instead

tidal bronze
#

Druggies kids those are not break ins. That's just life, at least to me.

#

Planned theft that's another thing.

forest edge
#

I'd rather have a break in than a squatter tho

#

my biggest fear with my farm

#

squatters are such a pain to remove

hushed basalt
#

Man kubernetes control planes are such a 200 pound gorilla

#

You'd have to have a very very good reason for maintaining one of these yourself in enterprise

tidal bronze
#

I hear you. Near my warehouse now there's many homeless plus meth users. There's a guy in a RV cooking meth. Epic. When we test fly drones the guy comes running asking hey you guys filming me or what ?

forest edge
#

I play nice with them, you gotta learn to live with the times. SWAT/LAPD is pretty usual at my place for training, they ask me do want these guys removed. I dont bother. Told the cook, as long as you keep your customers away from my stuff we can coexist. Things been good. Hope it stays that way.

@hushed basalt whats a roo gonna do with an ipod touch? the change was for a vending machine

@tidal bronze thats ballsy, I mean I assume everything is locked down with alarms and all but hoping meth heads will retian some kind of mutual agreement is asking for a lot lol

Not the meatheads, cook lol. He is clean like an arrow.

forest edge

oh you made it sound as if they setup a 24/7 shop there lol

tidal bronze

I am next to LA river and we have/ or used to have a badass bike path for miles along the river. Now all that is homeless and cooks.

forest edge

lol

#

well you got the 80's and 90's california songs and commercials to blame for that

tidal bronze

I feel bad for the real homeless doesn't bother me that they are all over. I got a problem with the green fucknuts that lives in a tent because of carbon footprint

forest edge

lol reminds me that my cousin even fell for that whole California thing back when california meant blondes, beach and sun and easy living. he went out there and came back saying the girls were accurate, the sun was accurate, but the livving was total bs lol

Yes most dont make it more than 18 months. That's the rule of thumb they say.

Working partly in the movie industry, the amount of lost dreams us unreal. The stories. Pretty sad at times. But hey when you make it, you make it.

forest edge

you mean 50 bucks to film there property? confused what you mean

tidal bronze
#

Yes.

#

To go and do a 15 minute video of the property

forest edge

drones are becoming "a thing" everywhere. our reddit constantly has people asking good spot to launch drones for filing areas around the city etc

#

although i will say the last year or so hasn't been quite as bad as before that

#

and thankfully my house hasn't been swarmed yet by any

tidal bronze

They come here hoping to do cinema which pays 14k/day on pro shoots. But that's for a very elite few.

forest edge

oh i see what your saying, drone operators for hire

tidal bronze
#

Yep.

forest edge
#

is there alot of drones in the air there on average?

tidal bronze
#

Yep in LA

forest edge

so it looks like a sci film with drones flying everywhere? lol

tidal bronze

But you cant really fly at noteworthy places without permit.

forest edge

if my air space started getting cluttered with random drones flying everywhere my first purchase would be one of those long range aimable jamming guns

Lol.

#

Be very careful dropping a drone off the sky.

#

It's a federal offense

forest edge

thats why I would use a jamming gun, can't trace that lol

for all the op knows, the battery died or something lol

@tidal bronze I see about 40+ second delay with chromecast streaming since the last update to H.264+ and VBR. It used to be about 5 seconds.

tidal bronze
#

Yikes. Adds delay because of codec, I notice in my players as well. 264+/265 relatively new. 😦

last plaza

yup - I am going to switch it back to plain old 264 - I got plenty of disk space to sacrifice

what sort of bitrates does Plex stream out btw?

4 to 20 mbps most, UHD 80+

dull chasm

yea try to stream a 80mb stream for 4k and atmos and it sucks

i just wished amazon prime would do atmos with nvidia shiled ....so far its a no go

That's why you need plex πŸ™‚

dull chasm

i got plex

tidal bronze
#

What's wrong with UHD stream?

dull chasm
#

so i need to connect amazon thru plex?

#

right now i am just using the nviadia amazon app

tidal bronze
#

Amazon/Netflix is not usual UHD and it sucks. But your UHD content on plex should be rocking UHD + ATMOS

dull chasm
#

yea plex does no problem

tidal bronze
#

It will be some time or if that.... netflix/amazon uses proprietary codecs for transmission with an aveage top cap @ 15mbps

#

They have to support average internet connection

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze still about 30 second delay with the -preset ultrafast setting. I cloned the streamer repo locally, built the docker image and ran it with 4 streams

tidal bronze
#

That's a bummer.

last plaza
#

somehow I think the latency is introduced with the camera encoding set to h.264+. I think by resetting that to h264 should speed things up

dull chasm

@tidal bronze no shit its getting to where you have to buy or download to get atmos .....

tidal bronze

hushed basalt
#

If you listen to "tech" articles aimed at investors, we're just weeks away from reaching singularity

tidal bronze
#

Got a question about tensor and POV of a particular object. How does the angle come into play?

hushed basalt
#

Invest now at the ground floor or become a human battery πŸ”‹

last plaza
#

it is all in the training data - in this case, you are talking about tensorflow - labeling and tuning with lots of data is the key. after a while, angles doesn't matter, it will be smart enough to figure things out

tidal bronze
#

So side view of a tree Vs top view, is identifiable. ?

last plaza
#

absolutely!

#

"can" be identifiable, if we have the models trained right.

tidal bronze
#

so that means top view training a must

last plaza
#

yup - It takes years before we get perfection in this case. the more users interested, the more data and training gets done

tidal bronze
#

Nice.

last plaza
#

we are in the early phases of ML to be honest - where folks mostly interested in identifying objects through images and cameras.... it is getting better, but we have a long way to go

hushed basalt
tidal bronze
#

How does it handle depth perception, when it comes to distance from objects?

hushed basalt
#

You might find that interesting @tidal bronze

last plaza
#

just like fingerprinting, it can create different types of "prints" and they can be small or large

#

each object has a distinctive print

tidal bronze
#

But racing you need distance calculations right?

light trout
#

nah, just be faster than the others πŸŽ‰

tidal bronze
#

lol

last plaza
#

nope - racing only requires angle, and speed and make sure you are in the center of the track

#

there is also object avoidance - that's even more advanced

tidal bronze
#

That does not cut it for navigation then.

hushed basalt
#

You wouldn't want to always be in the centre though would you

last plaza
#

Tesla has an advantage as they are capturing so much of data all over and it is getting better - others dont have that advantage yet

hushed basalt
#

Racing lines and all that

last plaza
#

in the racetrack for deep racer, you want to stay in the center of the track

tidal bronze
#

So basically this is avoiding objects, while maintaining maximum speed and heading angle.

last plaza
#

yes

#

that's extremely hard to train and achieve - that's essentially the challenge for deepracer. Whoever can train to go faster, complete the track wins

dull chasm
#

So basically this is avoiding objects, while maintaining maximum speed and heading angle.

shortest route based on traffic and various other conditions at realtime with sub second response times

hushed basalt
#

It gets a shorter lap time or else it gets the hose again

last plaza
#

yup

hushed basalt
last plaza
#

this is why I love the WestWorld - it will eventually become real

tidal bronze
#

So one day in the future, it's not the best formula 1 driver but the best trained model ? Lol

hushed basalt
#

Is there a fundamental difference

last plaza
#

lol, yup! there will be olympic competitions for AI stuff

hushed basalt
#

What is the best formula 1 driver other than aptitude and training

last plaza
#

speaking of olympics, looks like they are going to cancel it this year due to covid19

hushed basalt
#

Time to stock up the pantry perhaps

tidal bronze
#

There is a fundamental difference, since we are yet to understand the human brain 100%

last plaza
#

yup and masks are out of stock already

tidal bronze
#

No prime anti-bacterial wipes for travel as well.

last plaza
#

yup

#

the Boston Dynamics robots are pretty cool too!

tidal bronze
#

Yes they are but I wonder if their models are ever mass produced.

last plaza
#

imagine the combination of robotics with AI... scary!

#

Google owns them now - I think their use is specialized at the moment.... with all the robots, they couldn't plug the hole in Fukushima nuclear plant

#

the tech is still advancing, way more to go

tidal bronze
#

I read the upright models are tough with the current battery tech. Specially balance.

last plaza
#

yup - we don't have the robots that can walk in any terrain (like humans do) and perform tasks that require a lot of force

hushed basalt
#

We're complex beings

#

We're a long way from making androids with the same weight, size, strength and endurance as a trained soldier

tidal bronze
#

Human, such an interesting machine. First time you build a grab and drop mechanism, teaches you lot.....LOL

clever mortar
#

It's hard to build anything else that can refuel on the go πŸ˜›

tidal bronze
#

yep

hushed basalt
#

Battery tech is also a massive limitation

clever mortar
#

Never mind how good the biological entity is at handling random terrain and conditions

tidal bronze
#

I think battery is what holding us back for the last few decades.

hushed basalt
#

One day maybe we'll have a breakthrough and have batteries with same energy densities as gasoline

#

Nuclear subs and stuff are pretty amazing

#

How they can run for decades without refueling

clever mortar
#

There's a reason for the way NASA power stuff that gets lobbed into space...

hushed basalt
#

Nuclear powered seebeck generators right?

#

Very inefficient, but no moving parts

And 50 year lifespans

No 😦

last plaza

still keeping for observation? all procedures are done?

tidal bronze

Observation. All procedures done.

last plaza

ok...

shy comet

😦 sorry to hear that dude....i hope everything turns out good

tidal bronze

Thanks man.

shy comet
#

what vet hospital did you go to?

tidal bronze
#

Usual is socal vet but for this surgery had to go to Thousand oaks.

shy comet
#

oh conejo valley?

tidal bronze

VSEC, Only 2 surgeons I could find that can handle it that urgent

shy comet
#

oh wow

tidal bronze

Regular vet said she has only seen the procedure in text books. πŸ™‚

last plaza

glad she didn't find it on youtube!

LMAO.

I am hooked to restoration videos on YouTube these days - best videos to watch without audio while you are on calls πŸ™‚

full cedar
#

Anyone here use anything smart for home fragrance?

last plaza
#

@full cedar I just put a good old Bath and Body works thingy in a smart outlet an control it using simple timers

full cedar
#

I have a few of them but not happy with the dispersion of the fragrance.

last plaza
#

the electrical outlet ones take time unlike the other ones

full cedar
#

I didn't give it a fair shake I guess.

#

I see the power on time but not duration, how long do you run them?

#

Nvm I see it now duration 30 mins

#

Does the hour for the area work well? What's the warm up time like?

last plaza
#

depends on the size of the room ofcourse. some rooms 30 minutes, some up to an hour.

#

warm up is about 10 min

full cedar
#

Have you tried using Air Wick or Febreze plugins?

#

Wallflowers refills get extensive IMO for there size.

last plaza
#

It is all about what the family members like - expensive or not

full cedar
#

They have one I like called Flannel but it's never in stock for the sales at our local store lol

#

It's on ebay sometimes but more than regular price

tidal bronze
#

@full cedar febreeze much better, atleast for me.

rain swift
#

Never thought of that hmmm

#

I need to hook up our wax melter with a smart plug

tidal bronze
#

@last plaza great idea, got a few dozen tuyaconvert plugs left. Something for sunday.

green inlet
#

I get flack for my smart mailbox. I need to tell the wife that people are doing smart aroma

tidal bronze
green inlet
#

Shame on you......a door when mdi has mailboxes 🀣

tidal bronze
#

Oh my bad. Dont use the UI so dont really care what's on there.

green inlet
#

I did 6 random β€œyou’ve got mail” files that play if someone is home when the mail is delivered. Makes me laugh every time. I am simple though

tidal bronze
#

I am slowly removing all traces of visible HA throughout my installation. Started the process 2 years ago. Haven't tried even a theme πŸ˜€

rain swift
#

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

last plaza
#

@tidal bronze we really love the aroma outlets - My wife gets those from Bath and Body works when they have sale - we usually buy for the whole year at once. they last for about month and half in each room, so not bad

rain swift
#

Until they have star trek AI

#

Which plugs?

last plaza
#

I hate using the HA dashboard - automation is not clicking on dashboards πŸ˜›

#

any smart outlets - Belkin, wemo...

rain swift
#

You can't automate everything, don't care what anyone thinks

tidal bronze
#

Dont like anything UI based, practically useless when you rack up on actual number of devices.

last plaza
#

nothing bad about HA dashboard - we pay way too much attention to the UI than the functionality itself - when I say "we", I mean the folks who use HA

full cedar
#

fragrance seems like a very basic and cool thing to automate. Come home from work and house smells fresh and great

rain swift
#

At some point you'll need to manually kick off something by voice, button, something

last plaza
#

we never touched switches in our home for 3+ years now

rain swift
#

Do you use voice?

full cedar
#

I'm giving the plugin route a go. I have a few wall plugs in a draw somewhere.

rain swift
#

Or does it read your mind

last plaza
#

automations should kick in when needed and should take care of things automatically

tidal bronze
#

Same here perhaps 5 years now.

last plaza
#

yup

rain swift
#

Or do you just live regimented lives lol

light trout
#

I touch mine daily πŸ˜„

last plaza
#

I don't use voice either - not giving that data to amazon or google

rain swift
#

If you use voice it's no different than a ui

full cedar
#

That's a sin now...

tidal bronze

Motion driven tensor flow driven

clear ferry

clear ferry

last plaza

touching is not forbidden - touching self is forbidden πŸ˜› @light trout

rain swift
#

Well if you're a programmer and can write AI stuff good for you not everyone is that lol

light trout
#

I'm in the clear then

#

Lately I have been working more with this and not self

tidal bronze
#

@light trout guess it's great to be in sync with your inner being, daily. πŸ€”

full cedar
#

@rain swift not really, HA automates are hardly programming. Hardly even scripting.

light trout
#

My inner beeing is a douche πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

tidal bronze
#

What's not news πŸ˜‚ 😜

light trout
#

I guess it's in sync then 🀣

rain swift
#

@full cedar can you grand mother write them? And he mentioned tensor flow.

full cedar
#

Pretty sure that's hyperbole. And with the HA UI, maybe.

tidal bronze
#

Every ju ju bee is not for everyone @rain swift you gotta pick and choose

rain swift
#

TensorFlowΒ is aΒ freeΒ andΒ open-sourceΒ software libraryΒ forΒ dataflowΒ andΒ differentiableΒ programming across a range of tasks.

wintry crow
#

I think the word differentiable is a highly underused word tbh

tidal bronze

Automation takes time, not the scripting part learning your family habits and house part. Logic is not easy as it seems.

wintry crow
#

Right up there with malarky...

clear ferry
#

@light trout both my inner and outer is, I should probably do something about that SadMagog

full cedar
#

@tidal bronze Yep, not much of tech problem. HA automation are fairly easy going.

last plaza
#

yup - I tweaked my automations so many times over the number of years, it is pretty good for our needs so far

light trout
#

Instead you can make me dinner @clear ferry I'm hungry!

last plaza
#

writing code isn't that hard... understanding our needs takes time

full cedar
#

Now just automate postsmates API into HA for dinner automation.

tidal bronze
#

Exactly, if anyone says its 2 clicks and submit, then they have 1 light and a device tracker. πŸ˜€

clever mortar
#

I've lost track of how many times I've revised automations, and restructured entire groups of automations...
