There's some interesting notes like how zwave has a limit on hops but zigbee doesn't and how zwave's frequency is less congested and has better range, at the expense of bandwidth.

#

i hate when companies write installers that return non-standard exit codes when they're successful

#

i also hate companies that use garbage firmware on the TPM chips on their motherboards requiring me to script and push out a mostly silent firmware update through SCCM so they don't get bitlocker'd out of their machines...

Hey folks

that's kind of like cheating

I'm looking to start building up my HA/NodeRed install again, but I'm looking for advice on platform to run it on. Last time I lost everything due to a power outage and it corrupting my RPi SD-Card

#

I've been looking at possibly mac-mini or a nuc

nuc if you buck, boy

Technically that kind of discussion should be over in #general-archived since it's off topic here ๐Ÿ˜‰

junior forge
#

No?

orchid rose

Vasiley is slowly slipping towards the snake oil territory

dull chasm
#

huh? @orchid rose

orchid rose
#

Bi-amping is the first step. Next you'll start spending on cables

#

then suspending those cables off the floor

dull chasm
#

LOL yea it can get crazy .....biamping seems to be a user prefence thing ...it seemed to work on my setup

#

but i had the extra amps so didnt cost me anything

orchid rose
#

mmmhm... Slippery slope ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

If you do want something to improve on a relatively small budget, look into acoustics. From the pics I've seen you have quite a lot of stuff in the room which helps, but accurate measurements and good design can make an astounding difference

dull chasm
#

i am gonna build a addition just for a theater but its prolly 12 months in the future

#

from what i am reading if your setup is less than 2k (avr ......left and right speaker) biamping prolly wont do nothing ....but my front setup is 5k so might be that it helps in refinment

orchid rose
#

At least it has better chance of being of use than bi-wiring

dull chasm
#

oh no doubt

last plaza
#

how many more amps before you bring the house down? If I go 40% volume on home theater, it shakes the whole house

smoky oxide

nice, then you are getting close ๐Ÿ˜‰

i dont know ....i never added up the wattage low ...if i am in full atmos it can get very loud

orchid rose

yamaha doesnt say what it can put out on 9 channels but i would prolly guess at 600watts

yah the 3080 does a little over 600, I have the 3030 it does a little less

@orchid rose ? i can hit 120db easy

@dull chasm I saw a pair of Klipsch floor standing speakers on sale for $299 yesterday

last plaza
dull chasm

is that a best buy item?

last plaza

the receiver is BestBuy, the Klipsch speakers are from HHGregg - they filed bankruptcy a few years ago

tx nr is onkyo and you showed a denon?

yea they have moved to a line that will sell at best buy

I am fine living here but if I we're choosing to move to another country from somewhere I don't think Australia offers too much

tough vault
#

I had this fantasy of heading to NZ for a massive break from...people

ocean mirage
#

I would probably prefer NZ too

#

I'd even consider moving if I thought I could get a decent job

tough vault
#

I keep pestering rocketlab

#

my impression was that it was superbly chill and had clean air

#

safe and the politics were low on the bullshit factor

ocean mirage
#

Yeah basically

#

Its still a state, but less shit than some

rain swift
#

NZ? meh

tough vault
#

It was the best answer I could come up with. Los Angeles is stressful - Maybe not as stressful as New York

rain swift
#

another british prison colony lol

tough vault
#

but the fact that literally any day your world can end

rain swift
#

welcome to earth

tough vault
#

active shooter, earth quake, assholes in airplanes, the bomb

#

gangs, cops

rain swift
#

you can take steps to reduce likelyhood

ocean mirage
#

I don't think your odds on NY would be that bad for actually dying

rain swift
#

just don't choose ignoring reality to do it lol

ocean mirage
#

cops is a big one though, they are shit everywhere but doubly so over there

rain swift
#

statistics say otherwise

tough vault
#

no, there's like 7 million people in NY, odds are you'll be fine

#

They're bad all over the country, I'll tell you a story about being dragged out of a truck by my neck with 10 cops pointing pistols at me.... then they let me go 3 hours later

rain swift
tough vault
#

probably the closest I'd ever been to death, like actual death

ocean mirage
#

They are bad in every country Pigwich

#

but yeah thats fucked

tough vault
#

and I'm fucking white!

#

I couldn't even imagine

ocean mirage
#

Oh for sure

#

but if you aren't rich then they aren't there to serve you

tough vault
#

if i was black I'd have at least been in prison for SOMETHING

#

if I was lucky

ocean mirage
#

Especially if its somewhere with privatized prisons

tough vault
#

still, puts a bad taste in your mouth

ocean mirage
#

whos cruel idea was that

tough vault
#

disasterous, I know

#

NYPD is the worst

#

They'll give any idiot a gun

#

we had some kid in the shop who'd fuck up everything he touched, he didn't even finish his basic training and they gave him a glock

#

he brought it in to a bar! That's where he showed it to us!

#

that and NYPD also has these things called PBA cards

#

which are literally get out of jail cards. Police Benevolence Association

#

it means "I have a cop friend, they'll get whatever charges thrown out"

ocean mirage
#

sounds about right

tough vault
#

guys at work would say how they were falling out of the drivers seat drunk, flash their card, get chewed out, and sent home

#

this is no shit

ocean mirage
#

I am not surprised

#

you will not surprise me lol

tough vault
#

even the drunk guy said there was no way he should have got off

ocean mirage
#

police forces are inherently corrupt

rain swift
#

If we could sink NYC into the ocean, new York world be a great place to live.

tough vault
#

NYPD picked up my boss for having a pocket knife, early in the morning, just for working around the shop

ocean mirage
#

I just hate that many people, aside from all the other things you listed

#

id be so stressed

tough vault
#

so he's cuffed in the back of the van, it's afternoon, he's been in there all day, says "hey shouldn't I go to jail soon?"

#

they say "shut the fuck up, we ain't going to jail until this fucker is FULL" and they went around all day just picking people up, seeing what would stick

#

felony possession of a deadly weapon when was all said and done

#

that took some lawyer work to get thrown away

#

again, imagine the poor bastard who didn't have money

#

it's an insidious strategy for keeping black people from voting

#

anyways, proud to be an american!

clear ferry
tough vault
#

that thing is so weird.

clear ferry
#

This is weird

forest edge
#

atx tinder date

clear ferry
tidal bronze
#

@forest edge they don't accept brown cheese on Tinder ๐Ÿ˜ฆ poor atx

hushed basalt
#

@tough vault one company owns most of the brands

tough vault
#

yeah, just seems weird, although here there's some strange thing with payroll companies

#

I technically work for a company called ADP

#

and millions of other people do too

#

and the company I do work for pays THEM to screw up my paperwork and transfer money to my bank once in a while

forest edge
#

whats with the thicc girls these days with toothpick guys? the HS school bus picksup/dropoffs infront of my house and I swear for the last 3 years or more every single girl is thicc to fat and every single guy is thin to toothpick lol

#

I don't understand it

#

not talking couples, like every giorl is thicc ect

ocean mirage
#

uh

#

k

steel urchin
#

ehhhh

tough vault
#

like.... all of the girls are hefty?

steel urchin
#

hormones in the beef

forest edge
#

every single one. there is atleast 20 assorted kids out there

#

and it's all the same, all girls are thicc, all the boys are skinny

tough vault
#

maybe they're all on birth control and it's messing their bodies up before they're done actually growing

#

or maybe they're eating trash

forest edge
#

it's weird

tough vault
#

I have a running theory on the gut microbiome, antibiotics, etc

#

mess up your gut bacteria and everything goes to hell

#

they start secreting the wrong hormones

tidal bronze
#

@tough vault preschool/childcare is a very profitable business

tough vault
#

your metabolism goes whac

#

@tidal bronze especially when you do a bad job of running it ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

forest edge
#

something is certianly off cause there should be some fatter boys or skinnier girls in the mix and there just isn't

tough vault
#

so maybe it's the hormones in the beef, and maybe it's the antibiotics too

#

there's definitely something insidious going on in the modern diet

#

and lifestyle

ocean mirage
#

y'all are crazy

tough vault
#

and 50 years from now we'll be kicking ourselves

#

I say gut bacteria

#

see: fecal transplant

#

it's gross, but it does such weird things to people, so much more than would be assumed

#

and the efficacy for fixing c.diff infection is so insanely high that there's more lurking... has to be

#

well over 90% and FAST

#

gut bacteria man, it's the human body's governor system

#

and those thicc ladies out there probably have some serious imbalance from whatever stuff we all think is completely unrelated

rain swift
#

Welp

tough vault
#

everybody has alwasy been lazy

rain swift
#

Gmo food, most things they sell in the store are full of chemicals, food companies pay off the government to allow it

tough vault
#

how come it's only now coming to bite us in the ass

ocean mirage
#

lmao

#

GmO bAd

#

CHEMICALS!

rain swift
#

They have soy everything, impossible burgers mimic female estrogen

#

Turning all the men into weak and or 50 genders

ocean mirage
#

oh I love this narrative

orchid rose
#

dangerously close to forbidden topics here

ocean mirage
#

food companies are making all the men women!

rain swift
#

Soy boy exists for a reason

ocean mirage
#

lmao

tough vault
#

hah, yeah spealing of private prisons, they feet them all soy here

rain swift
#

Yeah well, it's odd to have a lounge, with forbidden topics

tough vault
#

now... don't get me wrong, I'm sure titties can be quite a talking point in prison

rain swift
#

Bet you elites don't feed their kids all that trash

orchid rose
#

it is what it is hmjgriffon

tough vault
#

nope I don't

#

and we don't watch TV

rain swift
#

Yes, yes it is

tough vault
#

it IS what it is

forest edge
#

unfortunitly that is the truth

tough vault
#

if I had less time and less money,

#

things would be different

#

I didn't do anything smart, I just had a stroke of luck

forest edge
#

we should all go to @tidal bronze house and bum off him and watch @clear ferry attempt to use his dance floor lol

tough vault
#

anyways, guys, thanks for the help with my stupid furnace fan

orchid rose
#

You had me until the atx dance moves SonomaGTS

tough vault
#

and sorry to be such a polarizing bastard. But I love to stir up the animals, for better or for worse.

forest edge

well we'd make sure to tell him to keep his shirt on

tidal bronze

I might have an issue with ATX since he throws up at every turn. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

forest edge

those norwats get alittle crazy when they start removing clothes

@tidal bronze no HA controlled vomit mopper? lol

tidal bronze
#

Not yet. ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge

wet/dry vac with lego technic wheels and servos lol

tidal bronze

All my buddies have pretty high tolerance for scotch, never even thought about a vomit mopper

forest edge

diy the brains out of a older robo vac into something beefier should do the job lol

You canโ€™t make this ^^^^^^^^ stuff up

hushed basalt

@tough vault have you read Giulia Enders book

steel urchin
#

Any suggestions for WDE's for touch panels? Cinnamon, while does a decent job, isn't without it's flaws

hushed basalt
#

Wde?

scenic radish
#

Desktop environment

#

Not sure what the W is tho

last dirge
#

the people that live in the state next to me would say War Damn Eagle

steel urchin
#

windowed desktop environment

#

WDM/WDE

#

or DWM, oops

#

too many acronyms.. i just need a UI for touch panel that feels intuitive

#

i'm trying to avoid building my own thing

#

Most that I'm finding look like at best they'd be good for a laptop convertible, but i'm working with a large touch panel atm

forest edge
#

Weapons of Damn Massacre

#

thought you were getting rid of that touch panel that you won't send me for free

scenic radish
#

Codex is sending out free touch panels?!

steel urchin
#

lol i will be, but for the time being i want to have it working well with linux so when i sell it to this person interested, it's working as a nice touch panel ๐Ÿ™‚

it was normally used for interactive displays and tracking

#

but for daily use i've never worked with for large touch panel

#

a decent tablet ui would even work but i'm not finding anything i like... might toss gnome3 on it to test it out

brisk glen
#

What is it supposed to do @steel urchin?

steel urchin
#

just being used in the kitchen now

#

before it tracked your every move and interaction with the panel itself ๐Ÿคฃ

brisk glen
#

So display ha and?

steel urchin
#

but again, it had a special purpose with a custom UI, now i just want a UI for daily use in the kitchen

#

netflix

#

whatever

#

if my nieces come over they can play a game on it

brisk glen
#

Kde I think has a mobile tablet like UI

#

Ubuntu used to be great

steel urchin
#

when they had that unity whole screen menu thing?

#

whatever it was called.. might not be unity

brisk glen
#

Yah

#

You slide in the dock and pick an app

steel urchin
#

hmm... is that still the ux?

brisk glen
#

Not sure

steel urchin
#

yeah just, i don't think that'd work well on a 25" screen

#

maybe it would, i dunno

#

just looks bulky and ugly, but i can give it a whirl

brisk glen
#

2018 version on a tablet

steel urchin
#

yeah i can see that working on a tablet

#

you'd be surprised how different it is to go from finger and light hand motions on mobile/tablet to entire arm gestures on a touch panel

brisk glen
#

Yah

#

Unity 8 had tablet mode

#

Ah ha

steel urchin
#

neat, i'll dl it now

#

wait actually

#

just says install ubuntu on desktop lol

#

everything else is a custom build per supported device (ie nexus 70

#

so nah, won't cut it, it's just a desktop UI

brisk glen
#

Kde it is

steel urchin
#

yep, grabbing plasma now

#

their host is slow

tidal bronze
#

It's Friday!!! Finally a little time to spare to finish up wall mount rack

steel urchin
#

nice

tidal bronze
#

Free up more space in the garage

rain swift
#

If I owned a house, i'd turn a closet into a data closet and have a hole in the ceiling so all the cables could run through the attic, and put a reinforced door on that closet, or some such.

tidal bronze
#

That's how how I have it. Nothing inside the house. I mean nothing ๐Ÿ™‚ Used to have free standing racks. Converting them to wall mount. Had to add few more studs and redo the wall.

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze lol car workshop bench with double monitor pc and a dyson on the wall? for shame!

rain swift
#

I just don't want thieves to be able to steal my BI box with the video evidence of their crimes, or take out my HA/Alarm system, etc.

#

assuming you don't just rig up tannerite and blow them to kingdom come and be done with it.

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge what's life without a dyson?

steel urchin
#

what is that @forest edge ? the package for the pm?

#

is that the new ubuntu app format stuff? snap?

#

or whatever it's called these days

tidal bronze
#

@rain swift I don't have the someone might steal my stuff issue ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

the app image

#

or the top one

#

considering I've seen it running on all kinds of crap besides the devices it's listed there i know it works

#

@tidal bronze you got the only clean garage with a workbench that has only seen wire fitting grease lol

steel urchin
#

ah ok, didn't know appimage was it's own distro format

forest edge
#

i'm not 100% sure codex, i haven't installed it just know i've seen it running on lots of crap so I know one of those 3 options will work

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge LMAO so right. Ran new 2" schedule 40 and I DID use wire fitting grease. You got telekinesis or something?

steel urchin
#

k, i'll see if i can throw it on my mint setup real quick

#

while plasma is etching

forest edge
#

lmao

tidal bronze
#

Did 21 new drops half of them audio. Bitch to go through even sweep 90s

sturdy saffron
#

Telekinesis - let me know when there is a integration to HA ๐Ÿ˜‚

forest edge
#

yea running wire through pipe sucks

tidal bronze
#

Got my guys to comb the entire length, was little easier than planned. But Audio is not as friendly as CAT

forest edge
#

electric company has a battery operated tool that does the tugging for them. ask them how much the thing costs and the dude said all he knows is that they told them if it ever broke they weren't getting a new one lol

tidal bronze
#

Yep they are pricey. But you can do it with hand tape say every 2 feet. Comb-hold-tape. That's if you want to make use of the pull string on a later date ๐Ÿ™‚

steel urchin
#

@forest edge so that is the ubports installer tool to flash firmware onto the supported device

forest edge
#

thankfully i never had to do big bundles. coax and romex is all i ever bothered to pull through any length of pipe and the romex made me not ever want to pull wire through shit again lol

steel urchin
#

aka android

tidal bronze
#

I don't touch romex 1V above my specs lol

#

Although EMT is much easier than PVC

forest edge
#

@steel urchin i wonder if just the ubuntu desktop has a "touch" mode then and maybe that's what I see. although pretty sure I remember seeing the apps part

tidal bronze
#

@steel urchin what are you trying today?

steel urchin
#

In the supported devices, for desktop it just says install Ubuntu, but it's just a desktop ui

forest edge
#

why not just install ubuntu and customize it?

#

it says it supports full touch

#

linux is stupid easy to change how it looks etc

steel urchin
#

Well I kinda did that with cinnamon, but it couldn't get a simulated right click (ie long press) working, and keyboard stuff was kinda shitty because it didn't like fully working with gnome accessibility stuff behind the scenes.

forest edge
#

I wonder where chromeos stands today

steel urchin
#

I can try Ubuntu

#

This plasma is meh

#

Looks like a 3rd world phone os

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
#

Yeah I don't care for this

#

Feels very weird

#

Hell lemme grab Ubuntu

forest edge
#

I would say try chromiumos but thatlooks to be in the same state it was in like 4 years ago lol

steel urchin
#

Grr why is everyone's hosts so damn slow

tidal bronze
#

Any recommendations for 4u chasis to hold 2 or 4 x RTX 2080TI?

forest edge
#

what in gods green earth for?

tidal bronze
#

photogrammetry

steel urchin
#

that'd be cool

#

but alas i do not

forest edge
#

I've seen some in videos holding 2 but don't think i ever seen 4 but with ribbon extensions you should be able to figure something out

tidal bronze
#

Gotta convert all tower cases to 4U taking too much space. 2 Per Unit is good enough.

forest edge
#

oh they want a pretty penny for those lol

tidal bronze
#

?

scenic radish
#

Words

forest edge
#

https://www.acnodes.com/rmc7462.htm something like that? one thing I looked up was 5k lol

tidal bronze
#

Run i9 extremes and 2080/1080 they are pricey but gets the work done quick. Most stages run strictly on CUDA

forest edge
#

well i saw a 4u that can hold 10 gpu's but when i saw the price tag i quickly closed the tab out of fear mt pc was gonna catch fire

tidal bronze
#

lol

steel urchin
#

That would be a great system

#

ok so... after etching plasma to the usb, windows no longer understood the drive :S

#

had to dd over the mbr

forest edge
#

you could try something like this. https://primeos.in/

#

the only downside i see is if it's anything like chrome os not all apps can be downloaded from the play store, but I would think the HA app would be able to

steel urchin
#

i don't care about the android apps honestly

#

i was using chrome to add shortcuts to the desktop for netflix and ha just fine... modified to be borderless, was a nice experience

#

except those 2 major things that mucked up the entire thing

forest edge
#

well you said about kids playing a quick game and in the kitchen

steel urchin
#

oh yeah, something they would play in the browser

forest edge
#

something like an android setup would be ideal for that situation

steel urchin
#

but true

#

hmm that looks pretty nice actually

#

i don't know which version to get though

#

mainline or standard

#

or classic

forest edge
#

yea i make my mother use a chromebox cause of how retarded simple it is yet gives her access to evverything she could ever need. got so sick of having to fix things when I had her using a normal pc with both linux and windows

steel urchin
#

oh wait, i found a link

forest edge
#

been over a year and she hasn't managed to mess anything up so been well worth the money

steel urchin
#

everyone's damn hosts are too slow for my patience tonight

steel urchin
#

Just on booting primeos it feels more polished

#

Ok I didn't think I'd like this based on how simple the page was, and I didn't see any source.... But this is pretty clean

hushed basalt
#

So dumb

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt welcome to the future. nintendo ds laptop for everyone!

steel urchin
#

Nice animation for boot

hushed basalt
forest edge
#

@steel urchin that the primeos logo?

#

lmao 90 for a bulb

steel urchin
#

It's the loading animation, the logo pops up next

rain swift
#

I got 2 for $77

hushed basalt
#

Welcome to astraya

rain swift
#

ordered yesterday, 1 day delivery

hushed basalt
#

I'm not sure what I'll do when I fit out my house

forest edge
#

I wouldn't buy a hue bulb if it was a buck lol

hushed basalt
#

Dimmable LEDs with dimmer switches are technically better long term

#

But colour control is kinda out

#

Australian certified market for smart bulbs is a lot smaller too

forest edge
#

can't you buy cheap chinese ones like everyone else online?

hushed basalt
#

It's pretty sketchy

#

Don't want to have insurance deny a claim over a $6 aliexpress bulb

#

I'm not a big fan of bulbs in general though

#

Small aperture lighting is gross to be under

forest edge
#

deny a claim of what? whats in the cheap bulbs is whats in the hue bulbs lol

hushed basalt
#

That's not how things work

#

Haven't you ever heard of regulatory compliance?

rain swift
#

JuSt As GuDd

forest edge
#

you must not have watched any of the hue teardown ideos lol

rain swift
#

all these people with their $2 shellys or whatever and everything all inside the walls of their houses, waiting to catch on fire and burn the place down lol.

hushed basalt
#

There is a huge difference between random chinese stuff and stuff that needs to be regulated for eu and aus markets

#

Look at random bali usb chargers vs real one teardowns for example

steel urchin
#

Hmm the installer of this needs some loving though

#

And it isn't booting ๐Ÿค”

rain swift
#

then they be like oh look at what you had all in your walls lol denied.

hushed basalt
#

Plus if you don't think an insurance company will use any and all means to save paying out hundreds of thousands of smackeroos

rain swift
#

they have on staff lawyers who's soul job is to find ways not to pay out.

hushed basalt
#

๐Ÿ’ฏ

#

Soul not sole, because they have no soul

rain swift
#

oh you installed these things yourself? ๐Ÿคฃ

hushed basalt
#

Please provide invoice from electrician for the installation of these ZigBee wall switches

rain swift
#

some people know what they are doing but i've seen some janky stuff.

hushed basalt
#

What do you mean the fire was caused by a lightning strike. That's not relevant

rain swift
#

I mean if I knew I was doing it right i'd do it and be like f it but man, I see some real garbage people wire up all over the place.

hushed basalt
#

Yeah I'm of two minds

#

You can't do anything in Australia without spending 4-5 years in school and apprenticeship

#

But at the same time some of the stuff I see on youtube of electrical stuff people do DIY

#

Whelp

rain swift
#

oh I heard all about that, that superhouse TV guy was talking about how ridiculous it is in australia.

#

you can't change a lightbulb without a contractor lol.

forest edge
#

ok so spend more than 2 bucks on a bulb and it likely not catch fire and burn your house down lol

#

my 10 buck bulbs havve been working flawlessly for months

rain swift
#

sweet

#

did they come with bonus corona virus lol.

forest edge
#

they predate that

#

so no

rain swift
#

score

#

which bulbs are we talking about again?

forest edge
#

why are there current videos being made about how computers work? rotf

rain swift
#

no idea.

steel urchin
#

Weird, installed it multiple ways and nothing worked... Finally found a random nested option for "auto install to specified disk" and that worked, even though it looked like the exact same setup I've done multiple times ๐Ÿ™„

#

But on the live instance I was able to side load Netflix fine

#

Hmm but it's SD only

#

Might be tolerable since it's just in the kitchen

forest edge
#

wait what

#

why you having issues?

steel urchin
#

Actually it just might be IT crowd that looks garbo

#

Well the Netflix app doesn't support the os

forest edge
#

what year is the pc?

steel urchin
#

So I had to use a "generic" version that Netflix provides, however I think its lacking drm certs, so it only supports sd

forest edge
#

you said you instaleld classic right?

steel urchin
#

It's not the pc

#

It's the OS

forest edge
#

well i told you that not all apps would work, but you sounded like you were having issues

steel urchin
#

It was fine in Windows and mint in chrome

#

No I've said multiple times it's working, just not in hd

forest edge
#

standard definition.. don't say sd lol

#

i was like wtf you talking about

hushed basalt
#

Pretty sure only windows has the drm for netflix?

forest edge
#

why do you need netflix on a kitchen pc?

#

don't evven think you can put netflix on a chromebox. nevver tried tho

steel urchin
#

The wifey likes to watch some shows while she cooks

#

Like the Downton Abbey type shows that I can't stand

#

Yeah I'm digging this, thanks for the find

forest edge
#

i take it you got netflix to work?

steel urchin
#

Lol yes I said that from the start ya goob

#

The one in the play store didn't work because it didn't support prime is, so I got the "generic" version from their support site

#

But this works fine for what it needs to be. Basically what I was looking for, was just trying to go Linux... This is lower maintenance

forest edge
#

is 0 maintenance if it has the same background update option like chromeos

hushed basalt
#

If I was stupid rich I think I'd build enterprise ceph clusters in my garage just for fun

#

Ceph is crazy expensive to do properly

steel urchin
#

yeah it's android

#

the only thing i don't like about it is it doesn't sleep in a low powered state.. the display stays on

hushed basalt
#

What's it going to be like in the future when people live on other planets

forest edge
#

should be a setting for that if not the pc itself usually has a setting for that lol

hushed basalt
#

No instant messaging

#

We'd miss it. Instantaneous two way communication.

#

It'd be like going back to the days of couriers and telegrams

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt are you drinking?

steel urchin
#

it's still putting out video is the point, it's just a black screen... so the monitor won't shut off

hushed basalt
#

No I've just been reading about interplanetary networking

steel urchin
#

and i looked through the settings, i don't see anything about power options

forest edge
#

science fiction huh

hushed basalt
#

Not fiction

forest edge
#

@steel urchin nothing in bios? since it's all in one and all

steel urchin
#

no

forest edge
#

@hushed basalt till the day something is attempted it's fiction lol

hushed basalt
#

Ehh I don't think researchers like their stuff being called science fiction

#

Plus it's already a reality for controlling and communicating with probes

forest edge
#

slapping current tech onto future whatifs is fiction, don't care what researchers think lol

hushed basalt
#

So medical research is medical fiction?

forest edge
#

you mean like for the past 20 years how they find cures for cancer that never actually become cures for cancer?

#

what would you call it?

hushed basalt
#

Attracting investors :D

forest edge
#

lol

clear ferry
hushed basalt
#

Well looks like the average IQ of the room just dropped

low harness
#

To be fair, you can't "Cure Cancer". Might as well say you could "Cure Sickness".

#

We can cure several cancerS, and even vaccinate against a few.

hushed basalt
#

Depending on which star trek series you watch they do a lot of that

#

Then they bring back disease, poverty, hunger and war in the edgier shows

low harness
#

And cancer is like fools. When you make something foolproof, someone will invent a better fool.

hushed basalt

cancer is caused by an underlying cause. if you correct that cause you essentially "cure" cancer.

stuff like chemo and radiation treatments are not cures

#

just got myself a Dupont Crimping Tool. Best toy in a long time

hushed basalt
#

@hearty depot open barrel crimping is awesome

#

What sort of connectors are you making

#

Why are cocktails in Australia so expensive

#

It's like $17-$20+ dollars for a cocktail

#

I can make about 18 cocktails at home for the same cost as 3 at a bar

clear ferry
#

Same price as cocktails in Norway then

hearty depot
#

I think its called Dupont - That I just can trow them on on ESP's
Do not even have to strip the wire

hushed basalt
#

I think DuPont is a brand?

#

Electronics is a bit out of my field though

hearty depot
#

just try to find out what open barrel crimping is - I guess Dupont are the type of connectors
yea... same ๐Ÿคฃ

hushed basalt
#

Open barrel crimps are the style where the connector is 'open' before you crimp it

#

And usually they have a section that goes on the insulator and a section that goes into the bare conductor

#

As opposed to closed barrel crimps, usually insulated, where the connector is already closed and usually uniform shape, ans it kind of just mushes onto the conductor

#

Usually with an insulated jacket already on.

#

While open barrel stuff typically goes into a connector housing or is heat shrinked after crimping

#

This is out of the domain of stuff you buy on amazon, but if you get precision dies with mated connectors on appropriate sized conductors you can actually get cold welding

#

Where the crimp and the copper actually become one under precise pressure

hearty depot
#

The ones I use got no insulated jacket already on top, I just push them on afterwards
but while checking out all the vids I get the feeling that I should have remove the isolation mildpanic

#

Of cause I didnt took the time to read the documentation ๐Ÿคฃ

#

Ok.. defenitly need some nice tool to remove the insulation

hearty depot
#

I would rather go for a automatic one ๐Ÿ˜…

You don't want automatic

#

Not that 'automatic' anyways

dull chasm
#

yea thought one ..... my german is non existent as you can see ......even thou my family came from there as stowaways on ship in the late 1800's

hushed basalt
#

You need to make a selection based on conductor size

#

It's not like you're a robot manufacturing random conductor sizes one at a time

#

You'll be like, okay this conductor fits in this hole. This conductor fits in this hole

hearty depot
#

most of the time I just used a razorblade - but killd sometimes some of the finer wires

hushed basalt
#

It's not worth the time and hassle

#

During cable prep and hours of intermittent fault finding later

#

You'll nick or deform conductors at the insulation cut point which you can't see

#

Or you'll cut strands off

#

Or you'll deform the roundness which is important to maintain

hearty depot
#

already into like 40 wires ๐Ÿ™ˆ all junk

hushed basalt

Knipex or toledo are probably decent brands worth springing for

#

Good enough but not elite

hearty depot

remindes me that I just destryoed my 3rd dirt ass cheap soldering iron

hushed basalt
#

TS-80 as a minimum

#

Also 63/37 not 60/40 solder

#

And helping hands. The ones made from coolant nozzles not spring clamps

#

and and ball joint panavise

#

Positioning and jigging is everything when it comes to solder

orchid rose
#

is the ts80 any better than the ts100?

hushed basalt
#

I haven't had hands on them

#

But the ts80 has much shorter tip length

clear ferry
#

I just strip with my teeth @hearty depot ๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

Which is key for accuracy

#

Ts80 has much lower wattage though

#

If you're not doing large components it doesn't matter

clear ferry
#

@low harness has the 100 I think

orchid rose
#

The 80 is a bit more expensive. I think for my use the 100 would be more than adequate

hushed basalt
#

Ts80, more precise less thermal power. Ts100 much more power but less precise

#

Depends on your usage

orchid rose
#

once in a blue moon basically

clear ferry
#

I'm quite happy with my Weller so far, would probably change to a ts100 if that one broke though

hushed basalt
#

This sort of stuff. Precision is everything's

orchid rose
#

but I tend to just not fix things because I hate my current stuff so having a decent iron would be useful

#

I struggle with stuff 4 times the size of that, lol

clear ferry
#

I was good at smd at one point

hushed basalt
#

63/37 multicore solder helps a lot

clear ferry
#

But that is 20 years ago

hushed basalt
#

Gets rid of that plastique stage

orchid rose
#

I should order that stuff too then

hushed basalt
#

60/40 has this long plastique stage

#

Where you can't move anything at all or you kill the joint

#

Which is near impossible for a lot of work

orchid rose
#

what thickness is good?

hushed basalt
#

Depends on what you do

#

It lasts forever so get two different sizes of smaller rolls if you can

#

Like you could give a leftover roll to your children if you're not in production use

hearty depot
#

When I would go for the 100 I cant use all the tips i bourht ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

hushed basalt
#

I'm sure the 100 is a fine iron

#

But it's long

orchid rose
#

Yeah I was thinking of a couple of different small rolls, but just wondering if there's such a thing as too thin

hushed basalt
#

Thin just means you need to feed it into a joint faster

#

If I had to pick, I'd go too thin rather than too thick

#

You'll get a feel for the work you do and if you're having to feed in inches of solder to do a joint

#

Then you can just get bigger and keep the smaller stuff for delicate stuff

#

Like soldering atxbyeas ego

clear ferry
low harness
#

I think the ts80 has a lower thermal resistance that compensates the lower power.

#

Between the heating element and the tip, that is.

hushed basalt
#

More efficient driver and all sorts of wizardry

#

Definitely a lot more bang per watt

#

But eventually physics come into play

hushed basalt
#

When you have to heat and solder two large surfaces in <1 second, you need wattage
