Now, a new report from the security research firm Check Point details a vulnerability with those Zigbee transmissions that could allow a hacker armed with little more than a laptop into your home network from as far as 100 meters away.
so how likely is it that a hacker is 100 meters or less from your house with a laptop trying to hack smart bulbs?
Unlikely any time soon as they haven't released the exploit, and the patch appears to be written but not released, despite the headline implying there is an update available.
yeah I just checked the app.
100m line of sight probably too. Good luck getting a signal outside my condo constructed with CMUs (concrete masonry units) and brick veneer lol
Yeah I'm also in a condo, and the chances of anyone in the complex being a hacker of any kind I think I'd pretty low.
Is*
In the hue bulb firmware it sounds like
When you are sucker for ATMOS but the AVR is 90ft out π€£
Does anyone use bugzilla?
how do I resolve a bug as "FIXED"? I don't see it as option
nvm, marked it as something else
What is a cla and why would he need to sign it?
I was shown a demo of Atmos a few years back, and was actually pretty blown away how good it was. Unfortunately it's not really practical in a rental flat π¦
You got me curious but then my receiver is old
mine is as well, but they aren't that expensive
I'm a firm believer that the amplifier makes very little difference to the sound quality and you should buy one mostly for the other features of the receiver
The old one was pretty expensive
I think it depends on whether your speaker can be easily pushed
sure if you need a lot of power there are definitely differences
You guys are crazy with your audio setups. The only "audiophile" thing I own is my five-year-old ATH-M40x cans
Headphones are by far the cheapest way to get some decent audio. Speakers just seem more fun when watching movies
Yeah, I personally just don't consume much media
Really just play video games and I use the headphones for that
I agree with headphones. My issues is I don't like any components in living spaces. So all homeruns to garage rack
we stream everything.
there was a time I wanted to have downloaded copies of everything, but there's no point.
does node-red count as a forbidden topic, specifically which place to install from?
the node-red channel is dead lol
Netflix, plex and amazon here as well but no wireless streaming π
you mean like wireless video?
yep.
never played with that, everything streams from an app on whatever it is
or from something connected to it like a roku
we do wireless video in the conference rooms at work though
All streaming devices are hardwired at home. Work yes wireless stuff.
I think most of it is wireless for me, its just easy and I have gigabit wireless.
β€οΈ gbit wireless
Never a fan of HDR streaming on wireless. I have a pretty extensive wireless setup still prefer hardwire any day.
Goodness lol
My ap has 2 ports for this
No matter what wireless you use 133mbit HDR stream will bring things to it's knees
You guys are cra πΏ
the only thing on my wireless pretty much is things using the internet
hmmm but have you tested with a 130mb video and a 7mb HD audio stream ? π
I have one security camera on it
streaming tech is pretty good about doing high def with not that much bandwidth
Assuming the streaming device can do a 4x4
Netflix 4k is not a test BTW 16mb lol
if I was going to play local media i'd use plex to transcode it
I could do 1 stream
due to limitations I have to do certain things wirelessly lol
Why transcode if you are using nvidia shield?
I mean if I was going through my wifi
maybe I wouldn't need to I dunno, i'd have to test it
@scenic radish not my fault if I got a $550 AP door for free
Letβs me go nuts with wireless
I think my AP was like $120
works fine
my wifi is only used for internet, everything else goes over a wire
@brisk glen running 3 in HD pro + 2 x Nano HD + 2 x mesh ac + AP AC LR ;-)1
Same difference when it comes to video streaming. Use it as well.
When it comes to video streaming, Iβm still on h264
Everything supports h265 hardware wise at this point
@tidal bronze and I thought I was bad with my 3 HD Pros in a 1500 sq ft house. lol
@real frigate I live in a small apartment
Close to 98 wifi devices π
I need my gbit WiFi π
Same... ~75 connected right now.
LOL @brisk glen Trust me... I totally get that.
Now I just need my damn UDM-Pro to ship. π
Slowly adding on devices
Believe it or not my fav is APACLR
@tidal bronze I've heard that from a LOT of people. I wanted to go with 2 LRs, but my walls suck ass.
My favorite is the SHD
2.4ghz performance is outstanding. Which I need the most. Everything I need gig is hardwired so I could care less with AC performance.
I basically get 2.4 ghz performance from the LR in my SHD
I have an LR sitting in a box
Meh, I think the UDM-SE is a pipe dream. But... if Unifi actually releases it, I'd probably buy it.
How many devices do you run ? @brisk glen
Not many on wireless for now, I had moved over to Bluetooth due to multicast issues with UniFi for years
lol
Turned out to be a hardware issue
The only thing that sucks is that my 2.4ghz drowns out my Zigbee devices. So, it's a constant battle between what gets priority.
With my gen 3 gear, everything just works
Aka Iβm slowly moving back
Plus the AP treats multicasts like broadcasts
No wireless slowdown there
Err like unicasts
@real frigate not here, I run wifi, zigbee, zwave and zwaveplus
@tidal bronze huh... Maybe I need to tweak my AP 2.4ghz power. They might be set at high.
Run AI once a week
AI?
Run AI every day
smoke weed every day
Wait... what I am I missing here? What is AI and why don't I know this?! lol
LOL @scenic radish yeah... if I didn't have to do random drug tests... sigh
Heh
Ohhhhh... Ok. I need to check this out.
@real frigate
You can have it auto scan every day and auto adjust your settings
Skynet mode
It takes it a month for it to figure things out
The more data it gets, the more accurate it becomes
It auto adjusts power and channels
Faster than ISP 1.line support staff
You guys rock. Thanks!
Removes the professional manual tuning of your wireless APs
It's not perfect. I would not recommend running it too often. If you have 3 AP's with time you will see some sort of even distribution, once you get there stop running AI or shit messes up. @real frigate
Good thing its still in beta
Itβs more geared to single setups for now
Aka the UDM
@tidal bronze Got it. Yeah, I'll give it a test. I usually stay far away from UniFi beta crap... because, well, it's usually crap.
Exactly π
Seriously, who the hell is buying the UDM? I mean, compared to the Alien, who the hell is the target audience for the UDM? The pro, totally get that, but the base UDM? Just WHY?
How many do you have on fast roaming? @real frigate Disconnect those before running AI
Um... the base UDM is a fantastic device
I would never buy a WiFi 6 device till itβs finalized
Never ever
The UDM offers 750 Mbit IDS/IPS with 1 Gbit bursts
Agreed, but I don't know how the UDM is a fantastic device compared to the Alien though. I guess because of the throughput and the ability to have a built-in controller?
True, but I've seen a lot of mention in the reddit threads that the 750 Mbit isn't able to be sustained with IPS/IDS turned on.
Aka its a soft bet in the consumer area in hopes that the finalized WiFi 6 spec does not break shit
LOL @ marketing... TRUTH!
Unifi π€’
Yup, I know. I turned off smart queue a LONG time ago. It's great on paper, but in execution it leaves a lot to be desired.
Here we go Mr. Hp @clear ferry
LOL @clear ferry
HPE to you @tidal bronze
Complex home networking that isn't utilized or needed π€’
HPE? Good god why
LMFAO
HPE == Brown Cheese?
does anyone run their home firewall in a VM? I really want to do that.
HPE is a shit show lately
Tasty, sweet and nice, yes!
Wait... wait... are we REALLY comparing HPE to Unifi?!
@rain swift did that for almost 10 years
πΏ π
@real frigate the noobs are π
@real frigate Iβm just ranting on them as a company
@rain swift I did for a long time and then got tired of having to maintain two systems instead of one.
@clear ferry π Whatevs... π
@real frigate why 2?
Ansible
I plan to move my vpn to wireguard on HA if it works well, and just have a firewall VM that does nothing but firewall stuff.
sorry, forbidden topic.
@brisk glen Yeah, I know. I've heard way too many horror stories.
Donβt move to wireguard till you have the new kernel
^^^ That!
when is that coming?
@rain swift The firewall VM and the hypervisor running the VM. It's nice in theory until you start really dealing with a LOT of traffic.
I thought my 30% pay raise by just mentioning another company was pretty competitive
they could not even come close
@clear ferry I've gotten my last two pay raises that way. Or, presenting the random offer letter that I get to HR and asking them to match the offer. LOL
I dunno if my home traffic would be enough to matter?
@real frigate indeed, same here, 17 last time, 30 this time π
I don't necessarily mind keeping the firewall on its own machine but I wanna get off openBSD and move to opensense or something with a nice GUI
@rain swift On a typical home network, nope. That little bit of traffic would be fine. For me, I work from home and maintain both a home network and a virtual work network. So, my traffic locally is almost always high.
Pfsense
pfSense on a rPi3B+... that's how we roll. π lmao
Good god
Your point being?

Why
For the lolz
sounds like a recipe for a terrible network XD
I swear... mention pfSense on a rPi3B+ and everyone's suddenly a critic π (and no, I would never, EVER... but for the lolz, hell yes).
Iβm sorry... 300 Mbit half duplex
somethingsomething using a toy as a server
I used to run pfsense on a dual pentium 3 box, then a dl360g4p, then a bl460cg5 as a vm then a bl460cg7 as a VM but now I run on a celeron mini computer as I don't have that much different networks anymore
Best I ever saw was at my buddy's office. They had a rPi3B+, pfSense, internal nic and a USB hub with a USB<->ethernet dongle... for 35 people lmao.
Wtf
Will probably migrate to a dl360gen10 as a VM when I get my new lab
Right?!
rpi4 > π
No god dam SD card
@wet pilot the "toy" seems to be doing the job for me just fine
actually sdcard would be perfectly fine for that
not if you're logging
If you want a proper firewall....
@brisk glen That was the "upgrade"... He was running it on a 16GB USB thumbdrive. I threw up in my mouth a bit after seeing that.
Wait... Why the hate for the rPi4?!
SD cards
SD[hit] cards... let's call them what they really are. π
with A1 card. I think it would be just fine
you'd likely tinker with it long before card issues
1 year
Yes
15k sas 4 lyfe
spinnybois
No way. I've got pi-hole running on a rPi3B+ with a crappy sandisk SD card in it... Damn thing has been running the better part of 3 years now.
Yes, yes we are @rain swift
if you're not logging the everything, the card can last longer
How the hell did you get pihole that stable?
I've run esxi off a 10yo cheap usb drive for 7 years
@brisk glen he didn't touch it after setting it up lol
my pi-hole RPi3 lives in my entertainment center and the only time I've ever had to touch it was when something I put in the cabinet knocked its ethernet cable loose
I take snapshots before I update stuff though.
@brisk glen Never had a problem with updates or it crapping out on me. Hell, it's more dependable than my car is.
see even brian knows the pi is πͺ
How
Pihole
π€’
@forest edge THIS. LOL, I update it about once every 3-6 months and then forget it's there until my kid complains that he can't get to pornhub.
i've had an rpi2 running kodi on the same sdcard since the rpi2 released. powered on 24/7-365 lol
little things are tough
Seriously. I have 2 rpi2s left and I'm terrified to touch them for fear of them dying.
One is my NAS server and the other is my backup NAS.
I have a HTPC, if people here even know what it stands for. I suspect it's now slower than RPI
I bet it is not
That 100 MHz cpu
omfg... I ran a HTPC for years. LOL, I was even an avid user of Microsoft's Home Server for years.
You are all sick bastards
Oh come on... Home Server wasn't THAT bad... (ok it was, but being able to backup a half-dozen laptops in 2008 without any effort was worth the pain).

I mean, it's not like I was running Media Center lol
Ah shit, checkrain is out for Linux
Time to make a pi zero dongle to break appleβs security
I changed my power company to an app based one that changes delivery to the cheapest supplier hourly
Wish I could do that
Changing supplier?
Now to order their ams reader for half price off
we have some options like that here atx
@fallow galleon they are a front end power company that buys power from other companies
;.;
I really wish they offered something like that here. We have one option for power. One.
there is a lot of downsides to it
like support lol
your power goes out, you can call the company that's supplying but you won't get like priority service or anything because your not a customer per se
We have the power delivery by a nation wide company
So no worries
Just the electricity itself that will be cheaper
And that is traded freely on the open marked
what are your options for home energy creation atx?
Solar?
solar prob wouldn't be good with all the snow lol
It will usually be down paid in 10 years
I wonder if wind would be a good coice?
baby are you down down down down down
Cost is $15000 to install here if I remember correctly
you mean $15,000? not $150,000? lol
My wife and I have been talking about going solar for awhile.
@forest edge yes
that's cheap
why aren't you full blown on that with powerbanks?
here it's like 30K+
and that 30k are small, not even whole power consumption coverage
Actually it was less
For half my roof, the one that gets the most sun
$12000
45 solar panels, full cover
Would produce 9200kwh per year
and why haven't you pulled the trigger? afraid of snow? lol
you guys should have some kidn fo sell back to grid system right? that way you can pull from the grid incase
Because I have more interesting things to spend money on
Like a new kitchen and a new bathroom
Yeah... Like beer
more interesting like cherries and kazoo's π€’
Cherry

Texas is deregulated like that as well... has it's ups and downs
bah stupid discord scrolled up
yeah i've been meaning to pick up a bag of those, they look good
think he was in here last night introducing himself
don't make me reeeee cogneato
oh he was the solar pi guy i was talking to. derp lol
@scenic radish hmm?
you FORBIDDEN_TOPIC'd
lol
fixed

highlight of our super bowl parade lmao https://v.redd.it/vcnq6fxqo5f41/DASH_1080?source=fallback
what the hell was he attempting to do?
I assume this took place in Kansas City, Kansas
After reading the release notes today, I was thinking it's crazy how far hass has come. From something so simple to something so complex and feature-ful.
Just imagine what 5 more years is going to do. damn.
there were people in every tree in sight. that idiot just happened to be the only one with his pants down and fell out.
all in all this was a sad parade in comparison to the Royals one when they won.
also from Kansas City, Kansas
You must be the least mentioned Trump kid lol
also forbidden topic
whats with these forbidden topics? is that some kind of inside joke ?
ohh ...NO POLITICS or RELIGION and BE
so when we were talking about the speech last night and making fun of it that was forbidden? geez.
@forest edge is my micro vlan madness crazy now?
yes
But I would be safe from that attack for the most part
good thing I didn't say what the speech was thus making it NOT FORBIDDEN
at the root of every vulnerability zigbee manages to be mentioned lol
discord needs a way to bundle a bunch of channels into one screen. there are too many to visit.
I just can't imagine the odds of someone going home to home looking to hack within range IoT devices unless it was a neighbor or something
@storm summit when I say FORBIDDEN TOPIC here it's because someone mentioned home assistant lol
So it's like fight club then?
Technically politics is forbidden too...
@scenic radish FORBIDDEN TOPIC
indeed it is tinkerer
the first rule of home assistant is to not talk about home assistant? does it say that on the website somewhere?
For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related, like whether Docker or Kubernetes, or Celcius or Kelvin, or Celcius or Celsius, or anything. NO POLITICS or RELIGION and BE CIVIL to one another or get BANNED permanently.
This is the one channel where it's off topic
You mean I have to click on one of those other channels? Blah.
It's ok, there's a few dozens for you to pick from
lol
pssh
|| we use this trick to hide from the mods when we discuss off topic stuff ||
uber fail
We need a channel to talk about how the mods are depriving us
@brisk glen meanwhile all your lights are blinking like crazy
oh wait, i found it.
Us? You mean you
oh wait. they are still here.
@forest edge thatβs an easy fix tho
yea you update the firmware lol
What matters is my data is safe
speaking of your highly classified data.. how is your HA cluster doing? lol
Fine lol
help with what?
I seem to be struggling with HA. I can't seem to get my Let's Encrypt SSL loaded on HA. I've followed many guides but end up with the same result.
are you using the addon or a different method?
addon
Thank you
i'm liking nginx as well. i access three services through it remotely
iOS 13.4 is looking to be amazing
damnit let me spam the sick
oh wow. nginx literally just works.
Nah, you're missing something which will bite when you least expect π€ͺ
iOS 13.3 has been a bin fire π π₯
@forest edge its preping macos for games
apple added an api to see keyboard states
aka ios games can finally come to macos once 10.15.4 hits stable
mac for games.. that's a chuckle in itself
mac... that's a chuckle in itself
I remember when game devs use to go out their way ensure support for mac and even linux but then the 80's was over and we moved on
linux support has come back a bit
nah that's just a pipe dream lol
oh sure plenty on indie games ect.. but lets be real triple A hasn't given a crap about linux one bit
true
thats just triple A though, eh
vulken has helped some. Steam pushed things to the better for a bit too
most AAA studios are π© right now though
^
lots of turd abroad for sure
EA: π©
Blizzard/Activision: π©
Bethesda: π©
Rockstar: mostly β Though their stocks just took a hit with that one dude leaving
CDPR: β for now
what have Rockstar been doing?
poor blizzard. I dunno what happened but they certianly been going down hill for some time now
theyve randomly banned people
I feel like CDPR haven't done shit in ages
Cyberpunk 2077 later this year
so by "haven't done shit" they've been developing a new game π
not allowed
it comes down to, if you support ios, you also got ipad, appletv and macos
thats not saying much
if you support windows... rip their universal apps
have you not seen the $$$$ Nintendo has done with their half assed mario kart app?
mobile users are trained for In app buying shit
not even sure what the percentage of mac supported game there are these days
I know there are still plenty even triple A
I know back when they stopped supporting linux they continued with apple but it was only a percentage
some of the e-sports titles too
I don't know a single gamer who is hard core linux that doesn't have a dual boot windows machine and it's that very fact that they had no real reason to bring back support for it
I know...one..sort of
It goes like this
there is no reason to use linux for most people, plenty of reasons to use windows
i would be full linux if it wasn't for games
and that is the most common response lol
and work makes me use a mac
well and those other occasional programs like graphic design or camera stuff
that are only supported by windows
Ubuntu mate edition is my daily driver boooiiiiiiii
course with windows adopting more and more linux stuff even one day @brisk glen may switch lmao
Creatives and gamers won't have a fun time on Linux
hell no
I suspect Microsoft has two competing departments
fuck win 10 updates
The developer sides who do things like WSL, visual studio*, PowerShell etc
well i guess win11 is an actual thing
Then there's the marketing side
I thought 10 was gonn abe the last but apaprently not
Not gonna have a good time making music on linux
Who do crap like Metro, bubblegum witch saga, telemetry, Cortana
windows 10 can stay in a vmware vm with snapshots every time windows updates shows its ugly ass head
one day, one day you'll be like.. wow windows is awesome!
I've had endless issues with Linux desktops
"It just works"
Windows just gets out of the way and lets me work
@forest edge I was almost like that
honestly win10 has been by far the most stable one i've dealt with and i've delt with every single version they ever made lol
then a windows 10 update shat on its boot file
I can't afford to spend 4 days trying to get Linux to behave
you just had a bad luck momemnt lol
another one nuked all of the new windows app crap... including settings etc
how?
I must have a lot of moments
what are you doing that gives it so much power lol
I just let it auto update, never really noticed any changes
till it stops booting
hasnt happened yet
it was good for 6 months :/
I was starting to go... this is nice
then boom
fresh install... 2 weeks later... boom
tried to DISM repair, sorta worked
I never had a single issue
even those known bugs where it was deleteing people's files or whatever, i never experinced that one either
when your enterprise consists of HP
you will see issues
the new surface stuff might be nice at this generation now
but I am 7 years from my refresh cycle
Does anyone know if tradfri bulbs have duty cycle lifespans
I'm pretty sure my daughter will be putting the on/off cycles to their limit
you had to use onedrive to have the files delete
Maybe HP is the problem π€
lol typical onedrive being the problem
i always run this for a fresh win10 install: https://pastebin.com/raw/ikTKaQ5V
wrong channel lol
your goofy goober! yea!
Just today win10 search broke. I'm surprised no user complained.
@somber steppe try #diy-archived
thank you was not sure if I am allowed to post a photo on there
Those scripts can be quite aggressive
I'd err on the side of disabling more functions than running them
i prefer the aggressive approach, windows likes to make recovery easy to get their stuff running again... plus that particular script has the ability to enable as well as disable
Has anyone here ever played with the X820 SATA addon board for the Pi? I'm wondering if it's possible to use it along with a 1tb SSD for the /share directory for Plex?
don't see why it couldn't
I've been looking at a few bargins on eBay and Amazon... (it's dangerous for my account every time...) found a nice metal enclosure for it all and a nice cheap 1tb ssd... trying to justify to myself that spending 2
Β£200 on a few bits would be worth it
it's a glorified usb to sata cable with some additional perks
weird part is, what i googled marketed it for the rpi3 but uses a usb3 ports which makes no sense lol
what are you streaming to where a Pi has enough balls to deal with Plex?
or are you using it as the client?
an android media player, an LG tv and an XBox.. all capable of transcoding over a gigabit network
I upgraded to a NUC before I got my ShieldTV
I had an older i3 mini ITX computer I was running plex on and it didn't have the balls to real time transcode
I was using Roku as a client and they can't do shit on their own
atm I have a 6 core AMD running windows10 and Serviio powering all the DNLA stuff, but I kinda want to be able to turn off the PC at night and just serve it all from the Pi.. might actually look at trying to setup a basic pi with Serviio and write an integration for Hassio the same way volumio works

Pis are not fit for server purposes
Real x86, 4-32GB of Ram, real pcie, real sata, real ethernet etc
depends on the purpose really
but no, not for heavy loads
I haven't tried it personally but seen videos of the rpi3b+ transcoding two streams without issue using a dedicated plex os (not even sure that's still available) I think that's pretty good considering
So my fiancee had a flat and the wheel was stuck on from corrosion. Turns out swinging a box of paper like a battering ram into the tire twice will knock it loose

I've watched alot of AVE. most of the tool tear down

He's definitely canadian

Ermeegerd
I haven't had time to start any new copy jobs the last weeks
Maybe next week
I only move stuff I have seen once π
π€·
you can get around the upload limit pretty easily
I still work on having Duplicati like Backups from Windows and Mac, and no duplicati doesn't fit that Job. I now try GoodSync and it looks promising
How that @loud tide
If you provision service accounts, you can take their full email, grant them access to the share/directory, then use those in rclone or whatever tool.
The quota is enforced per-uploader, not per-target.
I uploaded 6 TB in 3 days via this method.
Good To know, I just came across the sharing idea anyway to let people run their own plex Server with my cloud
Because any User can use the dev console and generate an Oauth credential and can get my encrypted cloud read only, I would have to share the keys tho
@boreal pewter that's what I did for my dad. I provisioned a new service account, gave it read only access, then gave him an rclone config with taht credential
so his share looks just like mine, but he can't add to it. there's a separate incoming share that his account has write access to that I can optionally pull from
Yeah that was my Theory yet I achieved 2 days ago
I rather care about them not deleting
I have a GCP VM image that I can regenerate easily that has my megadl and my rclone credentials built in. Next up is just a little script to run megadl then rclone, then shutdown and I'll be close to good enough.
I was going to say, it's easy to limit and I trust Google's access control, but then again, their Photos/Takeout/leak story today is pretty bad, and no one seems to care.
Well that leak could only happen when using a function you would probably not use in ages
I never used it π€·
90% of my digital life exists in Google so I actually do a Takeout fairly often.
I think it's itneresting that they're only telling people that received other peoples videos so far, not the other way around.
I'm sure it would be a shit show if they told people exactly which video, and how many other people they'd be sent to.
(I'm sure it was infrequent though, it's not like I'm worried about me in particular or anything.)
Yeah it's Bad
anyone know of a way to disable the annoying "bleep" sound a chromecast makes when something is being cast to it ?
I've used my googlefu, but nearly no-one seems to find this annoying :p
It's in the home app
For the home mini and home hub atleast
Not sure about Chromecast
Ugh from my current time list of countries I dont think more than 10 users come from those where it is about 2am rn
@hushed basalt get woke, go broke.
they ruined star wars, now they are ruining star trek
@vestal reef there's not really a way
you can keep it awake by essentially pinging it with an empty TTS command
but if you do that then whatever you're actually wanting it to do like play music or whatever gets interrupted when that keepalive happens
@clear ferry where ? I've looked for it in all the settings but can't find it .. (home hub mini)
@last dirge you could just add a state condition checking if the google home is off
does it report that?
yup
playing, paused, idle, off
i think there's a five-minute timeout from idle to off
I finally got my Ryzen!
π€’
does anyone know if is possible to install ebusd daemon on the same rpi3b as Hassio?
If you run an alternative install of forbidden topic I don't see why not
Anyone know of any LED strips that change based off sound? (or even better.. picture) ?
Yeah actually scratch that.. LED strips that change based on the colors on the screen is really what I'm looking for.
Ty!!
it shouldn't be too expensive if you go DIY
Depends on what you're trying to run it on. With PC you should easily find solutions
that's a limitation π
yup
Just TV
you're screwed π
=[
unless you connect a PC to that tv π
Dang
Ambilight is a few 100
@orchid rose unless his PC is doing the tuning, it's still not going to work
What about a RPi?
Dont know what expensive is for you
@boreal pewter ambilight was built into TVs and is now defunct
that's what I meant ofc
yeah a few hundo is more than what I was looking to spend
?
im trying to save for a Sonology π
@boreal pewter ambilight was a technology introduced by Philips and incorporated into some of their plasma TVs
they stopped making it
That doesn't matter? You can add ambilight to any TV
Smash you need to be able to have a program running that can "see" the picture. It might be possible on RPi but you'll need to run something like Kodi
But it costs several 100β¬
@molten needle the problem is that whatever's controlling the lights has to also "know" about the video signal
Yeah makes sense. Sounds like one of these DIY guides is the only way
Something like http://amblone.com/
make sure you understand all of the limitations that come with it
it works but with a relatively narrow set of functionality
most of which relies on having a single source that all of your multimedia comes from
Yeah just saw that
Maybe I need to suck it up and go with a more practical approach
which is why I'd take a look at Kodi
I have a RPi running Kodi atm on that TV
Im yet still not willing to spend that much for a simple Feature except someone knows a good and cheap product
then start with that and see if there are ambilight addons for it
and if they work on a RPi
real-time broadcast of stuff isn't likely to work
unless you've got something handling flinging that video across the network
like a HDHomerun or another headend device
You usually would Grab from a hdmi splitter...
who watches TV anyway π
@orchid rose in real time? Very few people
hdmi splitters won't work with HDCP, right?
@orchid rose right
HDCP requires that whatever's going to actually play the media do the decoding
What usecase is HDCP?
basically all HD content
anything that's got copy protection on it
if you play it from a disc or it's coming out of a STB, it's most likely got HDCP enabled
Ah right
and many streaming services also encode their streams
Not sure how Kodi handles the Netflix streams etc and if the ambilight plugin has access to the video stream in those cases. I think it does, but I could be wrong
One of the reasons it's so expensive
While I'm at it, I should ask.. I plan on getting a NAS setup very soon. Right now I have Kodi installed on a RPi with a 5tb hdd attached that houses a bunch of movie/tv media.
When I get the NAS setup, what would be the best way to make something like this work locally on all my devices? i.e. Wife watches a show upstairs on kodi, I watch something downstairs.
I know Kodi can have user accounts.. would I just use a shared database for all the devices that have Kodi installed?
I guess that's the next part of my question as well, Kodi on the RPi was easy to setup, but I don't want to have like 6 RPi's laying around. Is this something I could just throw on a firestick?
I use trakt to sync my viewing
I know this has nothing to do with HA - but this group seems to know more about this stuff than any other I am in
I cant answer any of your specific questions. I would just throw that all away, use Plex instead of Kodi, get rid of 1990 HDDs and use unlimited cloud and throw the NAS away π€·
what do you mean "make it work locally?"
@boreal pewter man I forgot to mention that. Should I just ditch Kodi for Plex
Plex
I run Plex on a NUC with a NFS mount to my Synology NAS
Plex is way more limiting than Kodi
So with that being said, what would I do in regards to being able to view on multiple devices in the home?
Plex install on All clients, same server
Embry π
Kodi is not as simple as Plex but it has a lot more to offer. Using something like trakt will help you sync the libraries if you use multiple devices
So if I have my TV in my living room for example.. how do I view Plex on it? I might have a fundamental misunderstanding of Plex. Do I install it on a RPi and just connect that?
most smartTVs have an app you can install
Chromecast/appletv also have apps
Firestick?
Server on the dedicated device like rpi and App on All clients
yep
No App no plex
But you should have a good TV then... Your pi wont transcode shit
think of plex as a local netflix
I hope you wont get transcode problems..
kodi can also behave that way but its more involved to configure
yeah, plex server on a pi will probably be a poor experience
What if the Plex was running on something like a Synology
depends on the synology hardware
I can tell you that transcoding uses up to 100% of an i7 3770
oh
If you have that no problem
also you lose quality
Yeah just afford a good Client or good TV
i think newer intel have hardware h264 encode/decode
Dual-channel H.265/H.264 4K video transcoding on the fly.
transcoding multiple streams could be an issue though right?
It depends. Also you don't have to transcode
Even 1 transcode will use a lot, I think 60-80% I had on my i7 6600 server
Or 6700 idk
You should NOT transcode
Buy good clients.
or just use Kodi and never transcode anything π
but also never play anything if the thing you're watching on doesn't support the protocol π
its also harder to make kodi work on "smart" devices
I don't know if this is relevant, but we do not stream anything with Kodi. Everything we watch and plan to watch is downloaded, and on local storage
There really isn't a perfect option out there and with the streaming services popping up like mushrooms it's just getting worse at this point
So oldschool
just download on the NAS storage and watch over the lan with Kodi. Then install trakt on all the clients to sync up what you've watched
There is a perfect Option, people probably just dont want it. Buying fucking good clients and dont transcode, then use plex π€·
@boreal pewter What do you mean by good clients
that involves a lot of buying so it's far from perfect
Like devices? TV's?
@molten needle transcoding happens if the source file has Video or Audio data the Client can not play. So buy a Client that can play everything
you're buying something either way. Either a common consumer product or a pi to load up the kodi client
one you don't have to manage, the other you do
Like my LG OLED C8 can actually play most, I use a Nvidia Shield tho which does Audio transcoding sometimes. But my servers have enough Power
fair, but I usually have a PC lying around anyway to run Kodi on. Right now it does that and runs HA
audio transcoding is super trivial for modern CPUs
6ch -> 2 for audio would be a common example
Yeah
Does the server side of Plex let HA know if something is paused/playing/stopped?
there's an integration
Would you consider the rpi4+ a "modern" cpu ?
eh, even the Pis would be fine with audio transcoding
its video where it hits a brick wall
Yeah probably they would
I know there's an integration, but I was just wondering how it works in this case. The LG integration for example only shows that "Netflix" is on, but not if it's actually playing anything or not - making it pretty useless
okay π¦
I neither
i have remote users so it would add too much extra crap
I have that through Nvidia Shield Android Integration and cinema automation
So if I use Kodi I should be ok then? Since Kodi does not transcode and just plays original quality?
how many screens do you want to support? do you want access to your media when you're not at home?
Just at home, maybe 3 screens at one time MAX. Most cases 1-2
if you want kodi, you'll need to buy a "something" to connect to those other screens
I've been running Plex for 7 years, I've never had CPU constraints even with multiple users π
Nothing I would notice atleast
lol sure, when you run it on server class hardware π

@wet pilot Could I just install Kodi on firesticks for the other devices? Then configure it to use a shared database?
i don't know if there is a kodi app for the firestick
I don't know if it's an app, but I know it cna be done
there is for Android but not sure if it has some limitations
Video is very hardware dependent
if you're using kodi, you'll have to manage the remote access and lib syncing and all that crap on your own
Kodi is more for the tinkerer type of user as it allows so many things through the addons. I personally prefer that, but it can become annoying when there are problems
somethingsomething HA CORE
somethingsomething FORBIDDEN TOPIC
@clear ferry played with passing GPU through ESXI to plex ?
Only on workstations for customers, either direct passthrough or k1 shared gpus
Nothing with Plex no
Are you guys using ipads around the house to control HA? If yes, what ipad should i be looking for and what wall mounts?
Why would I use an overpriced tablet to control and monitor something ? π
$70 android tablets yes
#frontend-archived would be the place to ask about that though
@clear ferry which androids do you recommend?
@clear ferry which androids do you recommend?
@small cairn Personally I prefer Commander Data and Six the Cylon...
mmm 6
right! lol
i know right? she was well fit
i have a problem, for some reason chrome is not storing my credentials and it asks me to login everytime i open HASSio
Although, Boomer was also cute
any ideas of what might be going on?
Check that cookie monster hasn't disabled your cookies
Boomer is cool
I'm very happy with my chuwi
Welp... I've taken the plunge... another 15 Sonoff Mini's ordered today... I think I may have an issue.. π€¦
am I right in thinking that if I make an automation or group, I can call said group/automation through GH? e.g. Hey Google, turn off all upstairs lights

The world is ending!
@midnight adder I can via Alexa so I assume you can through Google Assistant
I haven't set the assistant up yet even though I have both
@steel urchin yesterday called π
turns out my bridge was already updated with the patch in late january
i have auto-updates enabled at 11am each day
auto updates.. what a good consumer you are π
So.. Kirk Douglas died... the most impressive thing about that is that he was 103!! how the heck??
didn't he do the chant at the beginning of "Return to Innocence"?
The enigma song?#
The song's melodic and talking vocals in English are provided by Angel X (Andreas Harde), and a short talking vocal by Sandra ("It's not the beginning of the end, it's the return to yourself, the return to innocence"), while an Amis people chant ("Elders' Drinking Song") is repeated, which opens the song
there's something about him and that song
maybe he's in the music video?
yeah, that's it

ok
also i got some pb with openmqttgateway , is there a channel for that ?
#general-archived probably
@midnight adder I thought he had been dead for 10 years already
So I was surprised reading it today
nah he only looked it.. lol
@orchid rose yes the plex integration exposes a media_player entity for each Plex client
Crazy
And it shows paused, playing etc states as well? That's nice. Does it show the content type?

Most issues appear when people Start by "I thought" and dont realize they should only do what they actually can
eh, sometimes it's more fun to do the things you don't yet know you can do
And by sometimes, I mean usually
@boreal pewter then how would anyone learn anything?
Or let the magic smoke out
Learning without thinking!
guess i should give up on learning linux stuff
No I test this on the PROD
yeah... i'm not gonna try that lol
Wait me
write random data directly over a storage device... no thx
I do like the sudo chmod -R 666 /
oh boy
Unlike the more destructive, and now disabled, rm -fr / it works...
wait you can't run rm -rf / anymore? brb, gonna try
LOL I just realize that spelling is more fun
Yeah, the OS throws an error now
I usually do rf
i'll throw in a --no-preserve-root for good measure
I'm annoyed that it's starting to baby folks π
it's MY system and I can destroy it if i want!
"remove - france" nice one, I nee to use
I learned a lot about unix by breaking things
My favourite being setting CPU intensive processes to the real time priority
that dd one is fun if you want to remove your boot device and start over
useful for lab vms
It helps a lot everywhere. I cant fix an App if there is no System - put think meme here

@rain swift did you ever watch Legion
Damn, finally watched Parasite and it deserves all the praise it has gotten. Great movie and worked even better than Us which was pretty good as well.
@tidal bronze I see the option "start sound" but it was already disabled.
enabling or disabling doesn't seem to make a difference.. ah well, it was worth a try ..
I used to run the keep alive because it was annoying in the past, now I am used to it π Keep alive creates more issues when you have too many units and speaker groups
Yeah, and We use it as a photo frame so it wouldn't work anyway.. thanks for the reply π
We're talking about the start sound setting in Google Home, right? Doesn't make any difference for me neither, I still get the sound. I use TTS so little that it doesn't annoy me, but I'd rather have it not do that...
@orchid rose yes, that's what I was wondering about.. kind of annoying now that I'm using our nest hob as a cast to device for our camera streams
right. but i don't think you can turn off the cast bloop
when you cast to it, it plays a BLOOP noise
ah so that's what it's for Ted
only with the keepalive
if someone rings the door, not only do we hear the chimes, but also the nest hub goes BLEEEP π
@vestal reef that's why you build in the ability to turn off the doorbell
right. someone misunderstood the question and offered disabling the start sound as a potential solution
and when the doorbell gets rung then it does a TTS alert or something else
I've kinda Pavlov'd my dogs
lol
Nah, I'd rather hear the doorbell chime then have a tts message, I'm pretty sure the WAF for that would be pretty low over here π
I have a script that runs and sets a timer for 15 minutes after I start their food soaking and at the end of the 15 minutes it does a TTS alert that says "it's time to feed the dogs"
and turns all the lights on to where their crates are
then after a few minutes, turns off all the lights in the house except where their crates are
so they associate the BLOOP with "time to eat, boys!"
yeah, we have a play automation (node red dashboard) that plays an MP3 on the nest hub of me saying to stop barking and get into their bench
works like a charm
our foster dog hasn't yet figured out that you gotta get two bloops before food time
π€£
I saw a few episodes of legion it was okay
@orchid rose yes, Plex media_player entities show content, playback status. controls can work if the Plex clients are local to the Plex server (and the clients support it)
that's cool. I'll keep that in mind when I recommend this stuff to my friends π
for some reason the rooms aren't recognizing when I scroll to the bottom as read, it's very annoying.
unless I type something.
yeah discord has been doing that to me for months, randomly
ah okay, I was like, is it my browser, aahh
it's only SOME of my discords, though... which is more strange
yes, very strange indeed.
apparently I kicked in the right way because now rooms mark as read when I scroll down, haha.
yeah same for me and it does seem random, but I think it has something to do with multiple devices
I feel Tediore hasn't received enough π‘ today
@forest edge does he get any?
