@quartz ether They are pretty good, (LIFX) Graham from my local hackerspace in Melbourne was the cofounder, I am pretty supportive of the company as the guys are local to me and came from nothing to challenge real players like Phillips Hue, Osram Lightify etc. Overall I think they are decent kit and can be had for around half price during promo periods.

@quartz ether sure, you can make a lot of things yourself cheaper, for example I could make soap myself or toothpaste cheaper but its a cost vs convience thing, also your device would not be C-Tick Approved or legal in Australia for example. Not saying its a bad idea in any way, but its not a fair comparison. This comes from someone who does everything with Microcontrollers and never buys any products for home automation

Bulbs are 100% certified in aus/nz. Some of the install stuff isn’t fire rated but more than meets requirement if you really wanted to pay.

the milights have a "night mode" as well if you need dim lights, but you it's a mode and not a brightness percentage unfortunately. Yeelight's minimum brightness is pretty high.

With the bulbs, make sure you get the right one.

Some are white dimmable, some are have preselected colours in the white to red dimmable space, some are RGB iirc.

Main reason for RedHat and it's derivatives being used is that a lot of enterprise software only supported RedHat at one point. All the other options were run by dirty hippies who didn't deserve the majesty of such amazing software!

amazon prime is weird. It depends on where you are relative to the hubs. Usually they say "order by Xpm today to get it on Wed" on the page. But I've ordered stuff at like 3am and had it show up at 8pm same day.

3 year hardware refresh here, but we're also a wfh org and employees buy their own equipment and keep it after the 3 years, $1500 for regular employees $3000 for IT workers iirc

Work laptop is a Macbook Pro, but I purposely got a Dell XPS13 for home use.

Nothing wrong with the Macbook, it's a nice laptop and all that, but it's a bit of a trap. If you're using it as personal as well, which you can do, it means you're online even when home. People never close apps like Slack or Outlook etc.
