replacement so far

forest edge
#

ok TIP

#

before you hook the thing up

steel urchin
#

i'm contemplating on whether i want to do it now or wait until tomorrow.. partied my ass off for the last 3 days... my liver is feeling it 🀣

forest edge
#

these things are driven by Huawei socs and i bet anything they are overheating

steel urchin
#

yeah overheating was my guess

forest edge
#

so before you do anything, remove the 6 screws off the back, take off that cheap ass yellow thermal pad and use some thermal paste on the soc and the memory right below it

steel urchin
#

hmm ok.. i'll wait till tomorrow then

forest edge
#

the heat shield is garbage but atleast the trasnfer of heat will be better than what that pad is doijng

steel urchin
#

i don't have any pads to put on it, just toss raw paste on it?

#

ah ok there's a "proper" shield

#

term used loosely

forest edge

yea just typical pc thermal paste

steel urchin

ok good tip, i shall do so

steel urchin
#

it's a shame

forest edge
#

i don't like the fishbowl lens the nelly thing or that dbz2 or whatever those are

#

so it sucks that is the only other "cheap" option

#

yea mine crapped out only at night both times and because of the stupid thing swapping back and forth between bw/color turning on and off the irs

#

which caused heat

#

to the point it overheated

#

i tried to turn off the auto mode for that but it died on me the second i did that and i couldn't get it to reset

tidal bronze
#

You mean the IR cut filter goes in a loop ?

forest edge
#

well not spaz like that, but will swap frequently because the outside ambient lighting dosen't remain dark enough or light enough to maintain one mode

#

it always cycles like this color > bw > ir lights on > ir lights off > color > repeat

#

and sometimes it will do it quicker than others but I laready know those irs coming on take a toll

steel urchin
#

huh i didn't have that

#

just added the thermostat to HA, noice!

Maximum oof

quartz ether
#

LIfx are soo expensive

rare condor
#

@quartz ether They are pretty good, (LIFX) Graham from my local hackerspace in Melbourne was the cofounder, I am pretty supportive of the company as the guys are local to me and came from nothing to challenge real players like Phillips Hue, Osram Lightify etc. Overall I think they are decent kit and can be had for around half price during promo periods.

#

@hushed basalt oof?

hushed basalt
#

As in what does oof mean?

quartz ether
#

Still way to expensive. LimitlessLED are like 10% the price and effectively have all the exact same bulbs etc as all of those brands if not a larger range.

#

@rare condor http://futlight.com And you can make an arduino controller that can mimic hubs so insanely cheap to expand.

hushed basalt
#

My old work had lights that were A$20000

rare condor
#

@quartz ether sure, you can make a lot of things yourself cheaper, for example I could make soap myself or toothpaste cheaper but its a cost vs convience thing, also your device would not be C-Tick Approved or legal in Australia for example. Not saying its a bad idea in any way, but its not a fair comparison. This comes from someone who does everything with Microcontrollers and never buys any products for home automation

hushed basalt
#

Lights can be very expensive

#

Not including smarts

#

For quality

tidal bronze
#

@honest geode you will be very happy with that. Have a few. πŸ˜„

quartz ether
#

Bulbs are 100% certified in aus/nz. Some of the install stuff isn’t fire rated but more than meets requirement if you really wanted to pay.

rare condor
#

@quartz ether they have C-Tick Approval Seriously? I can't find any references in the listing for the product

honest geode
#

@tidal bronze With two small kids it's probably going to be a few more days before printing 😭

wispy chasm
#

Interested by the bulb theme here.. I buy Hue bulbs because they 'just work' but they are expensive. Anyone tried any of the bulbs from banggood with HA? Or any others which work and are available in EU?

orchid rose
#

milights work just fine as TehRobot mentioned, but require a hub that you can and should diy for a few euros

#

Yeelight is okay as well for the bit brighter bulbs (10W instead of 6W)

lucid citrus
#

Personally I use the IKEA smart lights and those work well for me.

orchid rose
#

That's an option as well but they are a lot more expensive as well, at least here

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I only use hue in the bedroom because they are dimmer, everything else is yeelight, tradfri or milight

orchid rose
#

the milights have a "night mode" as well if you need dim lights, but you it's a mode and not a brightness percentage unfortunately. Yeelight's minimum brightness is pretty high.

lucid citrus
#

IKEA min bright isn't too bad. Helps if you pick the right colour

#

At least for night, it wasn't too bright

clear ferry
#

Yeah, ain't too bad, but hue is still 10 lower ish @lucid citrus

lucid citrus
#

Ah.

clear ferry
#

Atleast for the E14 mignon bulbs

orchid rose
#

can you use RGB and W at the same time on Ikea/Hue/Yeelight?

clear ferry
#

I only have 4 RGB bulbs so I don't know

orchid rose
#

with the milight RGBW it turns off the W when you change to color. Probably limited power/cooling

#

with the led strips you can use both at the same time so it's not the standard that's limiting it

lucid citrus
#

IKEA, make sure you check. RGB bulbs exist but are specific, most common is a white spectrum kind of thing. Idk how the RGB ikea bulbs are like, they're not in my format.

#

I use GU10 bulbs

clear ferry
#

I had a RGB from IKEA in my living room, but after I removed the tradfri hub the colours weren't right

#

So I replaced it with a CT bulb

lucid citrus
#

Interesting

orchid rose
#

I really like the RGBCCT light that I just got. So much so, that I'm annoyed with my RGBWW now...

wispy chasm
#

How much cheaper are these alternatives though? Hue white bulbs (for areas which don't need colour), are only about Β£12-Β£15 each. The colour ones though are usually Β£30 a bulb.

orchid rose
#

Milights are like 6-8$ per bulb?

lucid citrus
#

Ikea can be 6 GBP

wispy chasm
#

Oh. That's quite a saving!

clear ferry
#

I pay Β£8-10 for tradfri in Norway

lucid citrus
orchid rose
#

depends on the type ofc, the brighter ones are quite expensive actually for some reason

lucid citrus
#

Yea. I'm quite new to the space but I'm happy with IKEA

wispy chasm
#

Oh wow.. that looks good! I've got SO many spotlights in the kitchen that I was going to replace the switch instead of the bulbs because it was going to cost so much.

orchid rose
#

switch might still make more sense unless you want RGB

wispy chasm
#

Are Tradfri the one's which you make a controller for?

orchid rose
wispy chasm
#

Never know when you may want a party in the kitchen πŸ˜„

#

I've yet to look at Zigbee.. so something to put on the list, might pick up a few bulbs and try it out.

lucid citrus
#

So you can use a dimmer control, as a purely independent system. But you can use IKEA gateway to connect to home assistant, ikeas own apps, or Google home.

wispy chasm
#

Love the idea of Β£6 spotlights!

clear ferry
#

Yeah, don't use the tradfri gateway

wispy chasm
#

This is great πŸ˜„

clear ferry
wispy chasm
#

Oh, you can connect the IKEA ones to Hue Hub?

clear ferry
orchid rose
#

You should also look at led strips. As long as you don't go overboard with them they can be pretty nice too

lucid citrus
#

With the bulbs, make sure you get the right one.

Some are white dimmable, some are have preselected colours in the white to red dimmable space, some are RGB iirc.

#

Brb, might as well find the term to describe that color space.

orchid rose
#

Yeah make sure you understand what the temperatures mean, what's the difference between terms like CCT, RGB, RGBW, RGBCCT etc before putting too much money into something

wispy chasm
#

I've got the Hue strips, they're great.

#

Looks like the bulbs at IKEA, with the colours etc are a very similar price to Hue.

#

"LED bulb E27 600 lumen, wireless dimmable, colour and white spectrum opal white"

#

Β£22

Ooh, they look good. And it says they do a bayonet fitting too.

scenic radish

i've only ever used debian server or raspbian lite

boreal pewter
#

Being an Admin actually forces you to use Redhat or CentOS

#

All companies I were yet used these 2

strange vapor
#

I use Centos and Redhat at work as that's what's here. Prefer Debian and it's derivatives at home.

#

Main reason for RedHat and it's derivatives being used is that a lot of enterprise software only supported RedHat at one point. All the other options were run by dirty hippies who didn't deserve the majesty of such amazing software!

wispy chasm
#

What do you guys use for voice interaction and/or audible alerts from HA? Is it worth looking into open sources things like snips & mycroft, or is it smoother to integrate Alexa or Google Home?

rain swift
#

We use windows and redhat at work, redhat is good because they have support and you can get help and or point fingers when something breaks

#

I run ubuntu, I don't see why anyone runs debian, its outdated crap.

last dirge
#

have you ever tried USING the redhat support?

#

it's "not great"

#

it's mostly only useful for "the buck stops here" kind of stuff

rain swift

a few times

#

not sayin its great, but it is one reason many corps use it

#

you can't really say well, we can go post in this forum if we have an issue and maybe someone will help

rain swift

its better than begging people in an open source forum lol

last dirge

you'd often times have faster response doing that though πŸ™‚

rain swift

well, see how far that gets you in board meetings and what not lol

last dirge
#

I'm a pleb

#

so I'm not in board meetings πŸ™‚

strange vapor
#

@last dirge I've dealt with RedHat support on some odd Kernel issues, mostly to do with SDN, and they have some really good people in there.

last dirge
#

@strange vapor it's like any support really

#

you've gotta fight through the shitty people to get someone useful

strange vapor
#

It's getting past the first layer of redshirts

last dirge
#

if you've got a good escalation channel established, you're good to go

proper swift
#

redhat support is about the same as most other support. good for "feel good a the C level"

#

once in a great while they will come though, often they make you wade through months of nonsense

last dirge
#

yeah

proper swift
#

I hate redhat for entirely different reasons. πŸ™‚

clear ferry
#

Board meetings 🀒

proper swift

like recently, Ansible Tower. 3.6 only works on postgres 10. So I ask, can I host a 3.5 tower on postgres 10. Answer? "We don't test anything other than 1 config, so dunno, good luck!"

Or meetings with executives who have no technical interests or knowledge

proper swift
#

great. so your answer is wing it and have fun with the upgrade. thx.

clear ferry
#

Ye old middle finger support @proper swift

proper swift
#

right. they mandate an upgrade, but give you no path to get there

#

or like openshift 4.1. it doesn't run on redhat. really? really redhat? your own stuff won't run on your own stuff?

#

and I refuse to discuss the abomination that is Satellite 6.

hearty depot
#

so Just run AWX. There is no support anyway

clear ferry

Just install Ubuntu desktop and run services in it, you are screwed either way

hearty depot

I actually have to do that right now

proper swift

I wish. I really wish. but oracle doesn't support ubuntu, so, sigh. also. bonus. oracle doesn't support redhat 8, so double sigh.

ok, back to editing my rack. πŸ™‚

strange vapor

@proper swift Just run Oracle's own unbreakable Linux!!

#

You know, the rebranded Centos....

clear ferry

Oracle preferably only supports oracle, unless you want to pay 1.5x for running whatever it is on another hardware platform

proper swift
#

oracle db doesn't support oracle linux 8. have fun with that.

clear ferry
#

Quite breakable Linux you say?

hearty depot
#

Didn't Huawei just did the same thing?

strange vapor

Luckily, I work in a company where if Oracle software is mentioned as a solution to a problem, the unfortunately person suggesting it will be defenestrated!

proper swift
#

did you know that oracle linux runs 4x faster for oracle workloads than redhat? how? magic!

clear ferry
#

They probably throttle performance on Itanium and others too ;)

last dirge
#

Oracle is evil

#

the pinnacle of corporate greed

strange vapor
#

From what I've heard, even internally it's a dog eat dog world. A friend of mine joined their Oracle Cloud team, and it sounds like internally there's multiple Oracle Cloud teams competing against each other to get changes in.

clear ferry
#

They just killed a few big projects too, one storage one I think

last dirge
#

people are jumping ship on their DB because of their greed

#

I think Amazon's fully off of Oracle now

#

they still offer it as a DB engine for clients but none of their infra is on it

strange vapor
#

AWS did a great post on moving from Oracle. They basically retrained all their Oracle DBAs on migration from Oracle to AWS offerings.

last dirge
#

and Amazon's taken up supporting/developing OpenJDK

strange vapor
last dirge
#

they finished that earlier than expected

I think they were targeting the end of the year

||β”Œβˆ©β”(β—£_β—’)β”Œβˆ©β”||

steel urchin

also that amcrest integration doesn't work because of that 500 error... so honestly this camera kinda sucks... but it feels less warm to the touch than before... but now i'm sitting here wondering what it'll be like when it's 110F out

the amcrest integration just broke cause of the update

not cause of anything else i thought

Quick question, I am interested in automating my lights with motion/lux sensors but I'm worried about them turning off when I'm reading or doing work at my desk. I don't think that I'm completely still during these tasks but it might not be enough movement for the sensor to pick up.

you could get the eufy and just use the local sdcard storage

and wait out till rtsp support

steel urchin

do you have info on that upcoming feature?

forest edge
#

no idea how that will impact the current one and it's future firmware roll outs

steel urchin
#

battery powered? bleh

forest edge
#

lol

#

there is no info on when it will support rtsp but they did say it will

#

usually companies don't make that claim without it coming out eventually

#

it also dosen't mean it won't be a turd when it does come out lol

#

it may be only 15fps max ect

steel urchin
#

bah this is crap, it could have been good

forest edge
#

btw that nelly thing is sold under like 4 of 5 diffrent brands so you could still get it. just make sure it has DB2 in the name and not DB1

#

but they are all the same camera/hardware

#

some may have diffrent color faceplates ect

steel urchin
#

yeah i was kinda looking, didn't see any on amazon, just db1

forest edge
#

I need to pick up ir heat gun so I can see if it's heat killing the doorbell or the firmware

#

if it's just buggy firmware then they may actually solve it but if it's just hardware failure then maybe thats why they are trying to push as many as they can lol

steel urchin
#

i think this was firmware

forest edge
#

they seem to be well aware lol

#

the private device option is probably more stable

#

higher fps ect

#

but that would require like blue iris

#

motioneye cannot do that

#

i highly advise everyone not to change doorbell values with legacy amcrest apps. hahaha

#

dude specifically mention to what happend to me

steel urchin
#

yeah same... damnit... wondering if i should go for a 3rd and just leave it

forest edge

I dunno, you may not be happy with it in the long run

#

you said you liked the app stuff, maybe the eufy ect would be better, safer

steel urchin
#

well right now i have no way to see through the other side of my door 🀣 fuckers built the door with no peephole, and frosted glass

#

eh, i don't LIKE the app stuff

forest edge
#

cause even tho you don't get rtsp ect with eufy atm you still get the remote app viewing ect

#

oh

steel urchin
#

i just liked the telecom aspect

forest edge
#

I doubt amcrest will ever unlock this doorbell to support full local api, but then who knows

#

well i say amcrest but it isn't up to them, it really is daul that makes the firmware

#

my hope is because of the coverage this stupid thing is getting that someone will create a custom firmware for it like how they did with the wyze

#

sure will lose out on some features but pure local control and stability would be worth it lol

steel urchin
#

bleh, it's late and i'm irritated.... it was going so well

atleast they were back in the day 🀣

#

Old Itaniums are always nice to keep, just in case you need them

hushed basalt
#

They love buying old power hungry gear for all those cores

#

Speaking of old redundant hardware

#

Wife went back to work after a year off

#

Got given a Lenovo T450s 🀒

#

Wasted a good 8-16 hours dealing with IT and trying to get a new laptop, but they made her do a reimage "before issuing new laptops"

orchid rose
#

what's wrong with it?

hushed basalt
#

It's just too old

#

Knowing corporate IT it's probably an i3 with 4GB of ram and a 250GB 5400rpm drive

#

And 5 year old cpu

#

With windows 10 plus layers of corporate IT management software, plus specialist software

clear ferry
#

We have a policy of replacing every 5 years, but I just say "LOSS OF PROFIT" and then I get a new one every three years

orchid rose
#

it's faster than my laptop with a quick search and I'm fine with mine πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

clear ferry
#

I currently have a zbook G3 with 48GB and 8 cores, it's good but a bit heavy

hushed basalt
#

But hey what's a few grand in lost productivity compared to trying to "save money" with a laptop worth $300 on the open market

clear ferry
#

so for short travel I usually do my chromebook

hushed basalt
#

My surface laptop 3 15" is quite good

#

Not as light as my surface pro 12" that's for sure

#

But the screen real estate is super valuable

#

5 years is too long for hardware refreshes

scenic radish
#

it's free real estate

hushed basalt
#

Free as in 🍺

scenic radish
#

yeah i feel like every 3 years would be more reasonable

#

then just combine all the old hardware into one supercomputer

hushed basalt
#

If your employees are so ineffective that a 5 year old laptop isn't slowing them down

#

You need to do some improvements

scenic radish
#

or destroy it all office space style

sorry, i don't understand buzzwords

#

is this good for the company?

inner vault
#

3 year hardware refresh here, but we're also a wfh org and employees buy their own equipment and keep it after the 3 years, $1500 for regular employees $3000 for IT workers iirc

hushed basalt
#

It means cost accounting people try to "improve" efficiency in one area

#

Whelp that was an accidental gif but I'll leave it

#

Buy their own gear as in they're given a lump sum?

inner vault
#

a budget to expense, not lump sum, but yeah effectively

#

We don't care what you use, as long as it works for you.

hushed basalt
#

So a dev gets like say $3k expense to get a laptop and they get to keep it if they stay 3 years, then they get a new work laptop?

inner vault
#

yep

hushed basalt
#

I guess the 20-25% resale value after that time is a cheap employee fringe benefit

inner vault
#

realistically, I don't think we've ever made anyone ship back or pay for a laptop after leaving after 2 years or whatever

#

because no one wants your old crusty laptop, and since we're all work from home, shipping becomes a hassle

hushed basalt
#

I worked with someone who used the company shipping account to send his eBay sales lol

#

I doubt he would ever get caught. Competence isn't a mainstay of large corporations

strange vapor
#

Work laptop is a Macbook Pro, but I purposely got a Dell XPS13 for home use.

#

Nothing wrong with the Macbook, it's a nice laptop and all that, but it's a bit of a trap. If you're using it as personal as well, which you can do, it means you're online even when home. People never close apps like Slack or Outlook etc.

#

A lot healthier to properly separate home and work!

hushed basalt
#

Indeed

#

I have commucation windows

#

Even during work

#

People don't need 2 minute responses, plus it's impossible to do deep work

wet pilot

most of the slack channels with non-teammates in them are muted

wet pilot
#

any emails that are sent direct to me get forwarded to my PM and get no response from me

hushed basalt
#

People who sent communications off frequently are usually disorganised and lazy

#

It's a great way to put a ball in someone elses court, and be "busy"

clear ferry
#

teams is actually pretty good, been trying to force people to use it for over 6 months now

hushed basalt
#

Rather than spending the time and organisational skills to figure out what you need from someone

clear ferry
#

it's slow adopting ....

hushed basalt
#

Is that Microsoft

clear ferry
#

yaaaas

wet pilot
#

my company has both

hushed basalt
#

I'm not a fan of slack

clear ferry
#

I prefer teams over slack

#

because of the office integrations

hushed basalt
#

It feels like a really bad web IRC client

wet pilot
#

that's what it started as

hushed basalt
#

And it's like a big hassle to move between orgs

#

Like discord is a lot better at that

clear ferry
hushed basalt
#

Even if they analyse all text, video and calls :€

clear ferry
#

teams is very easy to move between orgs

#

I do it with two clicks

#

I'm part of 2 different companies

hushed basalt

That's why he needs 38GB of ram

#

Productivity loss remember

clear ferry
#

pff, my teams uses 110MB RAM and 0% CPU, and I'm part of 5 teams in each org 🀣

scenic radish
#

i don't even have storage media, i just use RAM for all my storage

#

512 GB

#

way faster

clear ferry
#

we do that now @scenic radish

#

persistant memory is here to stay

scenic radish
#

i know, and it actually blows my mind

clear ferry
#

I think we do 512GB modules, so you can have a few TB per server

hushed basalt
#

But can it play Crysis

last dirge
#

NVMe is pretty damn close to persistent memory

clear ferry

yeah, NVMe is the lower tier one

half the price of optane

it was a competitor to zip drives

had translucent blue disks

hushed basalt

If 8 of them can't be plugged into a normal computer and have everything pulled off them with no intervention I'm not interested in that storage medium

last dirge

I wanna say the disks held 120MB

yeah! LS-120

I never touched that, I used zipdisk for a while
