and you can also install a proper sql server, too ๐
I know nothing about databases
i made the proff leave me alone when i started using a proper table structure
I haven't had the opportunity to need one yet
@wet pilot yah...
๐ฅ
that class sucked
lol then they wanted us to make a basic html webpage
no... your degree plan requires windows essentials
pulled down bootstrap and blasted something together
do yourself a favor and go dbms before you bother with nosql
yeah, need the structure before you drop it
computer essentials
the theory you'll learn that way will help you understand proper ways of working with nosql
thats the class
yep, worst class ever
ahh good ol BIS/MIS classes
managed to condense it down to 6w at least
oh idk, A+ was almost just as bad
professor docker me for not including a cd drive.. I was like bitch this is the future
who the hell needs a cd drive anymore soon
haha
lol i remember when i was like 16, went to go get A+ cert for the hell of it, and the guy next to me asked me how to turn on the PC we were taking the test on... after 5min of watching him struggle, i leaned down and plugged it in, and walked out
lol on stream the other day i was kinda bragging about the optiplex's we got from their donations, and i realized it actually has a slim dvd player in it, and i was like "oh neat, haven't seen one of these in a while!" and then i couldn't get it to open ๐คฃ
I've got massive study brain block atm
Need some meetups for inspiration but it's dead season
Im drunk... soo I got lots of ideas
meetups are a great way to realize you know more than everyone else around you
a great pick me up
Staying around @scenic radish gives me perspective on how good I am
glad to be of assistance
though cons can do the opposite
I got over the imposter syndrome
i went in to pycon this year expecting to learn stuff at least. and i did ๐
some cons can be really great, others not so much... i find them hit or miss
but always great for networking
yup
i'm happy with my current gig otherwise i would have been super tempted to look around
need a few more years with my title change to be safe
started in support and when i hit the fork for dev or admin i took the dev path
admin is easer
I'm definitely more interested in dev over admin
blame the dev
lol
(or deployment)
Whats your definition of dev vs ops vs admin
I love this stuff
naaa, deployment is golden
the line between dev and ops is bluring these days
Devops can write a script, dev can build an app
you have to go through the 7 tier of hell to deploy
Devops titles make me ๐คข
And architect and design and build apps
heh
It's like having an OHS department
Devops is something you do not a person or department
Wtf do QA people do
though devops are being dumped the "privilege" of deploying and maintaining k8s
Shouldn't devs write their own tests
hey, i like our QA
devs are good at unit tests
I think devs and ops are still discrete roles
QA are great at functional
and our QA team constantly find new ways to break or shit before the customers do
and then they automate those tests
@hushed basalt they are unless you work for a mom and pop shop
Someone managing your cluster shouldn't be worried about your functions and visa versa
then you want to run
They also are typically your SME for integrations as well if you're using them right
But not one role. If that makes sense
No QA should never do unit tests
The person who writes it should be doing unit tests
truth
@forest edge what is this bullshit website
Like most things people think of as devops, is that just a developer using automatic deployment
And if you're really wanting checks and balances, go cucumber
On a managed cloud service
we all know win 10 is forever
Let the business define tests
but SETs can be much better at writing test fixtures for re-use
@brisk glen the first linux injection windows.. phase1
Can't say I know what an SET is
Software Engineer in Test
Oh, duh
they're the automation masters
Yeah cuz I'd never do that lol
haha
I use devops for that
we have full stack in one team so we have to do all our own shit
in a lot of ways we are
until the company tries to make us work with others and they have no idea what we're doing
Too many chefs in the kitchen
we're full py3 before the drop dead date, they are just starting their transition
lots of speculation but nothing official
it smells right though
they've been contributing a lot of code to linux lately
Honestly there's no reason not to
and porting most of their money making software
But then licensing gets hairy
depends on where they want to play
Lots of tools would break their business model
add kernel stuff where it makes sense, sell their apps on top where it doesnt
It's what kinda makes Android a pain to build a new product with
Look at how vscode is treated by licensing nerds
They fork and bastardize it to get proprietary info out
Maybe but I haven't used it in so long to have any say on that
strictly from a licensing standpoint, atom is clearer
and more open
vscode isn't that bad though as things go
i have vscode and use it too but find myself opening sublime without thinking
after my experience with atom, i stayed on sublime for as long as i could
but now it's vscode or get rekt
when done well
chromium is big
i got a slack dev to admit to their memory hogging issues
he was praising a cli client
yeah i didn't like slack very much
i wish they'd stop fucking around and give us full markdown formatting
but they won't because its too scary for the scrubs
Slack killed code blocks on mobile
They know who their market is, and don't care about the rest
company is trying to push us to use teams
the threading of slack is nice to have
eh... yeah... i can see that.... we always still opted to create new channels for lengthy discussions
some large rooms can become too messy without it
#engineering or #support
but all the damn TSEs blast atHere all the fucking time
had to mute any channels they join
atHere is a thing in discord, caught that last min ๐
don't want to pull a @ocean mirage
๐
If anyone whinges about a 'here' ping they are even more boomer than people who complain about regular pings
cause it doesnt do shit except add a number
i think here is straight up disabled on this server
but like I said - everyone gets one
but i'm not about to test it
possible
if everyone is, so is here, they are tied together
usually
still not polite in rooms with many people
atEverone is disabled for all but the admin role i think
i have those turned off globally lol
i disable it on all my discords
i'll see the little red 1 or whatever but it won't like ping me
now, one thing server owners can do is create a role that everyone is assigned to, and then mention that one via a bot command (because you have to enable mentioning, mention, and immediately disable mentioning to avoid abuse)
i've left discord's over that
not sure how things are structured here
gotta be admin to see the settings for the server
yup
or atleast a role with permissions to do so
and i'm not that ๐
I always thought discords permission structure was alittle messed up
but they havve gotten alittle better
when it first started it wa slimited as hell
btw, whoever it was that mentioend the great suspender, it's been working out pretty well
oh i use that one, its nice
as a test i noticed my chrome was using 500mb, and cycled every tab to test and it went up to 1.6gb instantly
oh, i use "the great discarder"
errr what's the difference?
i'm not sure
made by the same person
i switched for some reason but i don't remember why
well i was doign lots of research on legal matters for this contractor bs, so i had a shit ton open
Advantages over The Great Suspender:
- More memory savings
- Compatible with chrome tab syncing
- Super lightweight extension that uses no content scripts or persistent background scripts
Disadvantages over The Great Suspender:
- No visibility on which tabs have been suspended
- Unable to prevent a tab from reloading when it gains focus
its nice when i can move a story to dev-complete and close all that shit out
ah ok
i switched to it when he first released it
and kinda forgot about the other one
not sure what the last bullet point there implies
so once it's suspended you can't reload it?
if you switch tabs it instantly reloads it
oh, PREVENT
can't words, cuz brain
i also have a ton of extensions for dev stuff, so the less access to tabs the better
yup
mmmm that dark theme: https://tomatothemebase.eu/?p=1580
lol look at you zwave groupies going at it in #zwave-archived
y u mad sonoma
where the hell is atx
ded
oh there he is
got norwat'd
well he was there and then he wasn't
maybe he did get eaten
one of these nights i need to install arch on my old goflex
I keep putting it off
speaking of putting it off... i should go cuddle with the wifey before she heads out on business... catch you lovely Nerds tomorrow o/

One of them makes decisions based on faulty logic, and the other one is my phone
which automations are out there for kitchens or what are devices that could be connected to home assistant?
my parents are changing their kitchen and i want to advice them some future proof devices
there was a dude on reddit that put a LED bulb in his oven
can't imagine that went well
Reminds me of the dude who put a plastic cutting board in his oven
"Mom's gonna whup my ass cuz the cutting board melted."
how do you guys work around thunder triggering motion sensors?
could add a for condition
what the hell kind of thunder do you have?
ofcourse, but we currently have those motion triggers for the lights that when you wave under it the lights of the kitchen go on
and off
idk when we are sitting in the living room and there is lighting of the tunder
thunder
could add a .5s delay
those should be pyrolized IR
then de lights of the kitchen go on
which would potentially be triggered by lightning
and off
not thunder

anybody have a explanation why iphone's don't like my 5ghz wifi?
It just stays on 2.4... my macbook never leaves 5ghz ๐ค i have no idea whats going on
Distance, and antenna size, maybe?
@wet pilot I am calling about the topic that must not be named
@narrow marten 3 meters currently, at max no walls, direct line of sight
lol
Hmmm... current iOS updates?
yep, newest ios on iphone xs
Probably it reads the 2.4ghz as stronger
And shitty software
According to a fast Google search
ok it just connected, but only when i turned wifi off and got to the AP within 1m
well then my 5ghz is shit I guess
Even saw a guy who had a defective WiFi chip in his iPhone which caused it to never select 5ghz
I was referring to the iOS software ๐
you might be correct... my iphone 6 behaves like my macbook but my XS apparently sucks in reception
And this is why I stay a gen or two behind on my iOS hardware
I bought an apple product back in 2005, never again ๐
And Iโm the exact opposite, I converted in โ03 and never went back
money for performance it just doesn't make sense
@narrow marten me too, but I experience a lack of quality control for the software since ยด13
Watched my wife have issues with her galaxy products for 7 years.. oddly enough she has an iphone, iPad, and a Mac book now
Who cares if the software is bad, the users keep buying
what if you just forget the 2.4GHz network mstone?
People use different ssids for 2.4 and 5ghz still? What is this? 2012?
2009
๐
@orchid rose in aperfect world.. vacuums and cheap usb sticks know 5ghz ๐ but you're right, I should make a separate SSID for 2.4
I had some issues with the same SSID name at some point so I have two now as well. Can't remember what exactly it was though
๐คข
I do have a Wifi for 2.4Ghz only and a different subnet for.. guess what... my Nintendo devices as 3DS and Switch since they simply do not connect fine with the main network ๐คท
Still main Wifi combo + Guest + 2.4 only
Mine was constant hopping back an forth
Thx Unifi ๐คฃ
oh I have a Guest network for 2.4GHz as well for these pesky nodemcu boards that hate my network and refuse to connect to it most of the time
I don't think I've had WiFi issues in the last 10 years
...connect fine on the guest network though on the same router
PEBKAC from all of you
I don't misuse the Guest Network tho, it has 2 layers of AUTH, like public hotspots
@clear ferry so you don't broadcast 2.4 at all?
@dusky plank sure I do, on the same ssid as 5
And guests also receive 5Ghz ๐
Guest networks you say, you have guests? ;)
No, actually not. BUT I HAVE IT
I used to have a captive portal, but meh, I just secure my devices, they won't get anywhere they ain't supposed to go anyway
Overspamming the neighbours automatic canal change of their stupid routers is a good feeling tho
@boreal pewter how's that AUTH part working for guests? there's a name for this procedure I think...
Let me look at Unifi
Unifi ๐คข
Ah it's simply their Hotspot feature which I use for the Guest network setting first a password so they can connect at all and then forcing to visit my hotspot page to auth again
So just WPA and then captive portal
@dusky plank
captive portal ๐
Yeah didn't want to have that too public
Same as we have done for 20 years otherwise ๐

โค๏ธ
let me be your guest
Oh dear there comes the name change
Lol!
Fifty frequencies of WiFi
Don't forget to add _2.4ghz and _5ghz
Splitting up the WiFi

Uh Uh calling it 127.0.0.1
My neighbor has ICE_van2
Distance?
Not like when I WiFi scan my customers, 500ssids and a few thousand access points that are not relevant are received
@clear ferry owns more ha m2 than you earn a year in bucks
10-50 meters on all sides
Nice, Iโm looking at 5 acres here in Fl
My property is only 800m2
i have a flat with 70m2, go figure I still need 2.4
but I occupy channel 7, at least...
Not sure of the conversion, 2400โ2
Around 222 square Euro Units
@clear ferry you considering my question in #330990055533576204?
Make that 223.
^_^; Sorry. I just threw your 2400 foot squared into Google and it threw that back
It was a lot to stuff into a single hat, if at all possible without many caveats
No worries, just never even heard of square euro units before..
Freedom units
Feet=Freedom Units. Meters=Euro Units.
Ahhhh...
irreverent humor helps pass the time

You know it
Lol, itโs funny now that Iโm following, Iโm retired and donโt get out much
Ah. Well I am a millennial and so for the moment I'm able to keep up with what the kids are into
one day I'm gonna be old and gray and go "Back in my day we used KEYBOARDS and not THOUGHT CONTROL."
Retirement, that will have to wait 40 more years ๐
@clear ferry norwat's retirement is at 80? wow lol
@clear ferry I bought it before I knew what I was getting into, I had figured that Linux had moved along in similar fashion to windows.
Nah, starts at 63, but you can work to 70 in the state and indefinitely in private I think
I retired at 40... worked very hard before that
That's very impressive.
No that hard actually
I think in Greece they start retiring at 52
Mindset more than anything else
I've had a job since I was nine, so I can't imagine not working ๐
My first job was at I think 19
been working since 16
I don't think much about it. Working at Wal-Mart is an experience best forgotten
I started working at 12...
first IT gig at 16 (yay nepotism)
At 19 I'd had 8 different employers
managed to hold that for 4 years
Damn...
dang atx you sure like to burn bridges
I was assuming at once
I've held my current job since I was 22, I'll have my 14th anniversary this year
Well this sucks. I forgot that Google WiFi doesn't support guest networks in bridge mode. So I either need to deal with double NAT or get a new AP
Since I'll have the edgerouter today
thought you bought an asus lol
It's the Google WiFi that's the issue, not the edgerouter
Yeah, I told you when you bought the wifi
I know that feeling Tediore
I bought it a long time ago fool
My memory feels like a collander
The Google WiFi, yeah. I've had it for years
I thought it was you
Since like 2017
Who did you hurt atx?
A lot of people
๐คฃ
oh i thought you bought something neat.. i see i was mistaken lol
I guess I could just treat my WLAN as a separate network entirely
At least until I save up for a new AP
Wtf lol
they all wireless g

I have some CPUs in my garage very few others have

I have a rx3600 a rx6600, a rx4640 and a bl860c too
Osmond, trs80, apple2e, 8086, I can keep going
whats with the hpe?
Hpe?
those ap's he has in boxes
Anyone remember Castle? Dos game?
the only DOS game I know how to play is CMD
Lol, Iโm old...
along with it's cousin "How do I do this in CMD?"
@scenic radish why did you decide to go with a non-wifi router?
I built my first robot at 9, in 1984... Iโm really fโing old.... Iโll shut up now...
lol
@narrow marten I don't remembe rit, but i likely played that Castle game at least once
It depends on what you count as a "robot" I built a car that could follow lines when I was 10... That would have been 2002 lol
I remember mostly Zork lol
Ok... at least Iโm not the only one left
Zork and that stupid Lucy Therapy game for ApplII
I had forgotten Zork, my first game with graphics,
my first game was Z
@forest edge I wanted to use my existing router as an AP. Guess I'll just return the edgerouter and buy one with WiFi
your current is that google ap thing?
Yeah
My Atari made me royalty in my neighborhood.... lol
Noice
ah yea you are severely restricted with what all you can do with thos epucks
Yeah, it was honestly fine until it started acting up with a really dumb issue
If bridge mode supported guest networks it wouldn't even be an issue
get you something that you can optionally flash with a custom firmware down the road
even if you end up nevver doing it
Wireless bits often go bad before router bits (especially when routing processing contributes to extra heat on the wireless bits), thus separate AP and routers are a great idea
although that may have been more true 5+ years ago
@inner vault i got an original wrt54g with ddwrt that will argue with you lol
@forest edge I've got two dead ones in my "hey, one day I'll definitely cannibalize this for parts" box of broken stuff in the basement with a strong counter argument ๐
lol
It is true that in general the wireless parts will fail first in my experience... But the wrt54gs were just beasts. I still have at least one of them somewhere
We use them for mesh networks at Ham Radio events
i think 20 years or more is a pretty acceptable give-up-on-life span
but yeah, they were workhorses
at least one of them probably didn't like living ontop of a crt monitor =\
lol
yea that's the heat you spoke of
that and when people put them on top of old refrigerators
Or closed cabnets
in their natural habitat stacked with a cable modem and a few external harddrives on the shelves of this badboy https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/images/products/micke-corner-workstation__0734327_PE739443_S5.JPG?f=s
or whatever the 2003 equivalent was
Oh I had something like that as kid
M A S H E E N L U R N I N G
This tool doesn't support threads in channels, does it? Anyone ever thought of moving this to Slack?
will never happen
No, but I am not a programmer.
sad
would be so many crickets lol
hmm... i bet i might have to as well...
not sure what the min is but apparently those ring ones suggest a 30va so that's likely what i'll grab
think what i got now is like a 14-16 or something
oh shit, i think mine is 14-16 as well
about to go get it, then i'll start investigating
what doorbell did you get?
amercrest or whatever it is
thing was 89 bucks, wasn't about to pass it up considering the stupid rca thing i originally looked at went from 100 to 140ish over the course of 1 year
I just have a camera on my porch ๐
I have a pi zero in the window currently lol but I wanted something with night vision
Just wanted to say this, don't know where else to put it.
I've been lurking and reading so much in the past few weeks and learned so much by just reading the channels and following links.
I really want to thank the group of regulars that always are ready to help or point in the right direction. Without your help I (and many others with me) wouldn't have the awesome setup I have now! Thanks for your time and patience!! Much appreciated! Love you guys! ๐ ๐
I also would like to relay that sentiment. There's some good people in here
I can tell you coming from domoticz, this discord and people who help have made a lot of my stuff possible.
in domoticz there was hardly anyone around, and the people you did find seemed to all be devs who only asked and answered other devs complicated crap.
so if you needed help you were pretty SOL. I was in a surveillance cam group with a programmer who used it and he helped me do the little bit of stuff i was doing with it.
Now the fun begins
no way this little chime thing would need 30VAC Sonoma
instructions don't even say, but imma go try it out
oh i guess TO the doorbell, that makes sense
i'll test mine in a bit at the front
I think the one in place was 5va
the doorbell people said mine was giving too much power, which was the problem... it was basically hanging between the ding and th edong
I love pixel art so much
i have 21.4 coming to the bell, so hoping it's enough
Oh good you got Amcrest and not Ring
i'd never get a ring
amcrest came recommended by Sonoma, and i like the look of it
has a nice heft to it
chime kit didn't fit in my chime box ๐ฆ but it's pretty small so eventually i'll forget about it
I installed pi hole today. I knew it would be much background tracking, but wtf?
heh yeah, surprising i'm sure
so... i thought this came with a microsd card, but i'm wondering if that's even necessary... i'm sure i could trigger off of motion and record directly, right? Or use some other software to manage that?
Can the Amcrest be battery powered? We don't have doorbell wires in our house and it is a rental so we can't add some.
@steel urchin you don't need the sdcard, that's just if you want it to store files on the device itself
right... i was goign to look into motioneye at some point for this
yea thats what i'll be using with it but the stream could be piped into many things
I think it comes with a year free of cloud storage as well or something
so if your transfdormer was putting out 24vac that may be enough without needing the 30va dunno
haven't evven opened the box of mine yet so no idea what all the directions say
using motioneye here, pretty happy with it so far
me neither
Most classic Norwegian doorbells were 4-6 C or D batteries
Or a transformer that did 18v AC I think it was
mine is putting out 22vac
not sure if thats enough
they just list a generic 16,24,30vvac lol
guess I can try it and if it's spazes then upgrade lol
i think the chime kit is just a capacitor inside to get it where it needs and regulate
yea
it allows the current to flow around the chime so the thing has power
since your chime is eseentially a break in the point
well aside from those that has lighted doorbells so i guess the chime does allow some power through
that's not how it works ๐
it dosen't allow full power through i'd bet my life on it
there's voltage going through the bell wires all the time but most of the time it's got resistance from the bulb
so it's below the threshold to trigger the chime
when you press the button it's a dead short
Yep
on the hardware page there's a picture of a doorbell button I converted to use DC voltage
I replaced the "grain of wheat" bulb with an LED and a resistor
then used a voltage divider at the microcontroller to drop it to where the input wasn't floating
hmmm my chime just is constantly buzzin
that dude said that what happend when his transformer was too small
so maybe i'll get a 30vac after all lol
Yeah might have to, and add caulking around it
yeah now it's not doing anything
might have to
it didn't start smoking did it?
lol
the caulking comment has me a little worried with your ability to handle tools hehe
honey i fixed the hole i made! https://cdn.instructables.com/FO7/6IOR/GZUB3T73/FO76IORGZUB3T73.LARGE.jpg?auto=webp&&frame=1&width=620&height=620&fit=bounds
well the mounting plate doesn't fully sit flush with the surface
so there's like a 1/16" gap around the entire thing
my ability with tools is plenty fine ๐
yeah, i just call it all caulk
but yeah, i getcha
do you have a multimeter?
curious of those doorbell people measured your transformer right lol
cause 24vac should have worked fine from what i been reading
yeah that's how i was testing the 21.4 at the door
if i short the wires there it works as expected
with the doorbell attached it does nothing
it was buzzing for a short bit, but now nothing
ah
@forest edge 22V is enough
thats at the transformer tho
but for me to test it at the chime i need to short the wires, right?
if his is buzzing at 21 at the ringer then i don't think 22 will be enough lol
yay subpar wiring
welp, off to home depot i guess
yay for no standardization
well to be fair when doorbells came out noone expected there to be camera ran off the juice lol
yea i don't think hippies planned that far ahead back when all this crap became common
lol - my not yet complete Zigbee2mqtt network map
@last dirge More of a Rohde and Schwarz fan but very difficult to justify the expense for hobby use.
wtf is that the matrix 2.0
@young sigil I ordered the parts to breadboard that circuit
I'll know soon if it works or not
Yeah I mean, it sorta worked for a bit with the previous setup. It'd occasionally hang and buzz
Here we go
@steel urchin ran acorss this https://support.amcrest.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038058591-Chime-Compatibility-List-for-Amcrest-Wi-Fi-Doorbell-AD110- yours on the list? do you evven know what it is?
I need to figure out my doorbell, the transformer is sitting on top of my breaker panel, but the wires from it go directly into the back of the panel and I'm pretty sure it's literally mounted without a breaker associated with it, like pushed into the channels that the breakers clip into - there's also no voltage coming out of it
I'm pretty sure it's literally mounted without a breaker associated with it, like pushed into the channels that the breakers clip into
ew
what home depot charge for that transformer codex?
I don't know what it is, but for the most part simple mechanical doorbells arebthr same really
curious if i should pop over to amazon lol
19 +tax
thats not bad
So just seeing your messages Brian, that's what I was thinking. Measured at the transformer and it's the same so no loss on the wire, but yeah gonna try this 30va.
oh hell ya, adguard home got some massive updates
pixelserv-tls here I come
for anyone interested https://hub.docker.com/r/imthai/pixelserv-tls
does that work any better than pihole?
I thought about doing the pihole thing, but tomato has a similar function built in
@last dirge a lot better
too lazy to block ads
It checks if DNS responses contain any blacklisted IP addresses or CNAME records, and blocks DNS queries if there are any
Ah I see, instead of putting to 0.0.0.0 it'll actually respond with a pixel
just give them your data and view thier spam.. livve life alittle
Timeouts go bye bye
they have little children who need bread on the table too you know
I thought pixelsrv-tls worked in conjunction with pihole
@inner vault yes but adguard has disguised trackers blocking
and no need to use other software for DOT or DOH
2 weeks later WTF was I thinking here?
Sorry 2 hours later
2 months rather

what do you mean by leave work undocumented? you mean not clocking out?
norwat to engrish plz
Apparently some people actually put these things called comments in their code... But they must be rare because I don't see them very often. ๐
@brisk glen that's what pihole does too
ah
does it now?
they finaly updated it to have built in DoH and DoT?
what?
dns over https or dns over tls
oh, I don't know
it's the primary DNS server for my network
blocks a SHITLOAD of traffic
If you are using DNS over TLS then PiHole would have to keep a list of IP addresses, not just domain names
And it would have to reroute the actual packets instead of just change the DNS response
Whew it gets hot up there
Out with the old, in with the new
Lol ok, still no ding dong.. must have something I need to enable in the app
nothing says "great idea" like exposed electrical contacts in cellulose
I get a ding when I short it, has to be the unit not enabling the mechanical chime... Skybell has the same thing
Lol but I can't get this damn qr screen to focus
@last dirge low voltage is acceptable lol
it's 30VAC
still considered low
240v is considered low
Anything under 1000v AC I'm pretty sure
@steel urchin in the video he said he had to switch the setting in the app from mechanical to digital to make the mechanical chime work lol
The word you're looking for is extra low voltage
Yeah I figured... But for some reason this app will not focus at all. Camera apis fine
i feel older with the fact that he had done all this and I don't think i left my chair once lol
I hate javascript
yeah digital
it's so disgustingly hot and humid out
thermostat says it's 79% humidity in the house :S
what's wrong brian ... i can prolly help with that
ok ubuntu folks, how on earth do I disable going to sleep when the system is running on battery with the lid closed
my HA install is on an old laptop that I keep the lid closed on and any time there's a power outage it automatically goes into sleep mode no matter how full the battery is
i've tried like 4 different things over the past year and nothing has made a difference :[
but its been long enough that I forget what I've tried ๐คฃ
sounds like a bios thing
โsudo systemctl mask sleep.target suspend.target hibernate.target hybrid-sleep.targetโ
The bios has nothing to do with this....
already did the HandleLidSwitch=ignore trick
Yah, that stops the lid thing
the bios most certian can have something to do with this lol
downside is I would actually like it to suspend if the battery gets down to like 30% or something
but it just auto suspends
i don't care if it was ronald mcdonal os
though TBH maybe its better to just do a graceful shutdown when the battery gets low
Yah..... you would need to script that or do something else, thatโs not systemd area
eh ill just turn it off all together
wife wants a picture frame but they are all like $150 and we already have some echos.
linux power management is less than great
Get a cheap android tablet for $50?
Yah..... itโs all over the god dam place
Why I gave up for a NUC
actually, I have a kindle I'm not really using, I need to see if it has a picture frame app though, also forgot how much space it has.
i think almost all of the kindle fires can be rooted now
@rain swift google > https://www.the-ambient.com/how-to/create-photo-slideshow-amazon-echo-show-spot-1711
and even if not you can install google play
thats not the same
actually i dislike that one they havve for that
lol i wonder if this doorbell would have worked fine on the old transformer
since it required an app config anyway
lol
now you'll always wonder
I might try mine before swapping out the transformer just so you can live in peace
meh... i don't care... $20 was cheap
Finally got around to running my own ipv6 dns server at home
Now I need to set up the firewall for ipv6 :/
your gonna cry if your house ever gets struck by lightning
Why?
cause you got so much shit you'll have to resetup lol
Like replace a backup battery or 2?
you think lightning will only effect the batteries?
works fine for me
And itโs not like I donโt have an ansible playbook for this or anything
Itโs supposed to protect the gear from that :p
lol that dog bark at the end was priceless
hehe he's been going bonkers over all my testing
at least with the 30vac in there i can swap out without having to be concerned
The controller for the firewall shit lives else where :p
@brisk glen I've seen lighting melt a bed frame from a socket 3ft away.. i wouldn't bank on anything saving anything lol
@forest edge well... I guess then itโs new gear, restore from backup and update my ansible inventory before redeploying
hurts my back just thinking about it
I kinda hope now that there is a strike so I can upgrade some gear :p
It would be wife approved
Itโs just a simple plug the new shit in, ssh and give it the server to adopt to and the rest is automated for the most part
Fix nas and pxe the rest
ok so the app is pretty decent... lets you set motion distance (kept triggering from across the street!) and the area to search for motion
yea i won't be using the app lol
other than initial setup
just give me rtsp and i'll be good to go
yeah i need to still figure that out, but leave town early tomorrow morning and need to do other shit
at least it's up and running
damn now i guess tomorrow i should install mine
yeah do it so you can help me with mine later ๐
cloud based oses ๐คข
?
was watching a vvideo on alternative oses for 2020 and one of them was called friend or something which was a cloud based os
everything was driven through html5 and js lol
hmm one thing that's weird is you create an account via the app, but it doesn't work at all on their website
some overseas companies have what they call "international" login for services such as apps that are not directly tied to their individual country websites
I have a few like that
errr so how do you do the cloud bs? I enabled it in the app, it said go to the site.. no workie
king of random over here lol
JLH is a babe
was
doorbell is working fine... i'm trying to check out the website
which video do you keep referring to?
the one you watched 10 seconds before purchasing it from amazon lol
but you said website so the video dosen't apply
you're assuming i watched that lol
you said you did
https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/397426163649216512/665462228518043679 i mean how else would you know it was "nice" lol
the amazon link above it was what i was referring to ๐
lol
ahh so that's what the secondary password was for... the rtsp stream
it just asked for a password for the doorbell, and i'm like " i just created an account, what do you want another password for?"
Lol called amcrest to ask about website login, and he wanted to take remote access of my pc
Lol yeah right
do it
anyway... guess this thing doesn't support viewing remotely
remote access
so i'll have to figure out the rtsp stuff later
thats the app
it errors every time ๐คทโโ๏ธ
if you want to view by pc you'd havve to pipe the rtsp feed out
port forwarding
you got a setting screwy or something
make a DNS name that points to an install IP on the LAN, and your public IP on the WAN
internal*
app don't know the difference
there's no pointing to an ip anywhere in the app, so that's a futile exercise
ok finally worked after 20 tries
so its using their server as a proxy? no thanks.
maybe the dude remotely took control of your phone haha
the chinese are watching you touch yourself.
my cams cant talk to the internet
most off the shelf doorbell cameras work that way
because its an easy way for dummies to see the cam remotely without doing any setup
anyway, it's working, only ~4s delay which isn't bad
woohoo
it'll let me hopefully answer when i'm away
yeah, when on my 4g
while ons ame network there should be next to no delay
oh
even still
4 seconds sound a bit much
maybe they are being flooded with evveryone buying the dmn thing lol
I mean it is currently the cheapiest doorbell cam with the features
Just a standard RF doorbell usually has ~1 second delay (at least all the ones I have had 3-4 different brands)
I don't wanna talk to people or have a doorbell, I just want to see.
@steel urchin for you, be best for you to go ahead and use https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/amcrest/ with it
make your life alittle easier
I'm not sure which route I'll be taking. I don't have much need for anything complex, so I'll be taking a look at everything soon enough. But glad it's working at all right now.
pulls up in VLC just fine as well ๐
aren't you using the ha app?
yeah i'm just toying with things
I thought you had your crap setup to access ha outside your network
ah yea then install the motioneye addon
and pipe it in there
i don't run hassio
then presto you got access remoetly lol
but... still...
i sorta have it remotely accessible... i need to toy with port forwarding since i don't have NAT loopback
that has been a serious PITA
i'm talkin about with HA
i have another service running 443 already so i need to map out my ports properly
or go update all my alexa skills to point to a different port
actually just using the amercrest intergration would be your easist by far method of getting the feed into ha
but you wouldn't have any nvr with that
right, and i kinda want that because we've been having issues with our postal worker
i wanna record her being a POS
then install motioneye on the same machine > your next project lool
yep... but still i need to figure the port thing out...
Reverse proxy?
for example, i have dnsmasq pointing to my internal IP for my domain, but internally it's listening on 8123... router is forwarding 443->8123, but NAT loopback missing that doesn't work... so internally i need to also run on 443, except i have nginx already listening on 443 so that won't work just yet without proxying
like i said, i gotta figure out how i want it
or i can j ust run HA on 8123 over ssl but then i have a lot of other crap to update
it's just somethin i gotta work through, not ready to dive into that.. i have a house to clean since the wife is on the way home!
