wet pilot
#

eh, you can force sql to work

steel urchin
#

and you can also install a proper sql server, too ๐Ÿ˜›

wet pilot
#

but its closer to MSSQL

#

i was forced to use it in a class once

hushed basalt
#

I know nothing about databases

wet pilot
#

i made the proff leave me alone when i started using a proper table structure

hushed basalt
#

I haven't had the opportunity to need one yet

brisk glen
#

@wet pilot yah...

scenic radish
#

๐Ÿ”ฅ

brisk glen
#

that class sucked

wet pilot
#

lol then they wanted us to make a basic html webpage

brisk glen
#

no... your degree plan requires windows essentials

wet pilot
#

pulled down bootstrap and blasted something together

steel urchin
#

do yourself a favor and go dbms before you bother with nosql

wet pilot
#

yeah, need the structure before you drop it

brisk glen
#

computer essentials

steel urchin
#

the theory you'll learn that way will help you understand proper ways of working with nosql

brisk glen
#

thats the class

wet pilot
#

yep, worst class ever

steel urchin
#

ahh good ol BIS/MIS classes

wet pilot
#

managed to condense it down to 6w at least

brisk glen
#

oh idk, A+ was almost just as bad

wet pilot
#

took calc 1 in the other 6

#

XD

#

(it was a retake because credits didn't transfer)

brisk glen
#

professor docker me for not including a cd drive.. I was like bitch this is the future

#

who the hell needs a cd drive anymore soon

wet pilot
#

haha

steel urchin
#

lol i remember when i was like 16, went to go get A+ cert for the hell of it, and the guy next to me asked me how to turn on the PC we were taking the test on... after 5min of watching him struggle, i leaned down and plugged it in, and walked out

wet pilot
#

i don't have a working one here anymore

#

ouch

steel urchin
#

lol on stream the other day i was kinda bragging about the optiplex's we got from their donations, and i realized it actually has a slim dvd player in it, and i was like "oh neat, haven't seen one of these in a while!" and then i couldn't get it to open ๐Ÿคฃ

hushed basalt
#

I've got massive study brain block atm

#

Need some meetups for inspiration but it's dead season

wet pilot
#

so you get us instead

#

you're welcome!

brisk glen
#

Im drunk... soo I got lots of ideas

wet pilot
#

haha

#

i should catch up

steel urchin
#

meetups are a great way to realize you know more than everyone else around you

#

a great pick me up

hushed basalt
#

Staying around @scenic radish gives me perspective on how good I am

scenic radish
#

glad to be of assistance

wet pilot
#

though cons can do the opposite

brisk glen
#

I got over the imposter syndrome

wet pilot
#

i went in to pycon this year expecting to learn stuff at least. and i did ๐Ÿ™‚

steel urchin
#

some cons can be really great, others not so much... i find them hit or miss

#

but always great for networking

wet pilot
#

yup

#

i'm happy with my current gig otherwise i would have been super tempted to look around

#

need a few more years with my title change to be safe

#

started in support and when i hit the fork for dev or admin i took the dev path

brisk glen
#

admin is easer

hushed basalt
#

I'm definitely more interested in dev over admin

brisk glen
#

blame the dev

wet pilot
#

heh

#

but we all can blame support

brisk glen
#

lol

wet pilot
#

(or deployment)

steel urchin
hushed basalt
#

Whats your definition of dev vs ops vs admin

steel urchin
#

I love this stuff

brisk glen
#

naaa, deployment is golden

wet pilot
#

the line between dev and ops is bluring these days

steel urchin
#

Devops can write a script, dev can build an app

brisk glen
#

you have to go through the 7 tier of hell to deploy

hushed basalt
#

Devops titles make me ๐Ÿคข

steel urchin
#

And architect and design and build apps

wet pilot
#

heh

hushed basalt
#

It's like having an OHS department

#

Devops is something you do not a person or department

steel urchin
#

Mmmm you could argue the same for QA

#

But you wouldn't dare

hushed basalt
#

Wtf do QA people do

wet pilot
#

though devops are being dumped the "privilege" of deploying and maintaining k8s

hushed basalt
#

Shouldn't devs write their own tests

wet pilot
#

hey, i like our QA

steel urchin
#

Every dev should be able to devops and qa

#

Unit tests, yes

wet pilot
#

devs are good at unit tests

hushed basalt
#

I think devs and ops are still discrete roles

wet pilot
#

QA are great at functional

steel urchin
#

Which so many people get wrong in the first place

#

Functional and e2e

wet pilot
#

and our QA team constantly find new ways to break or shit before the customers do

#

and then they automate those tests

brisk glen
#

@hushed basalt they are unless you work for a mom and pop shop

hushed basalt
#

Someone managing your cluster shouldn't be worried about your functions and visa versa

brisk glen
#

then you want to run

steel urchin
#

They also are typically your SME for integrations as well if you're using them right

hushed basalt
#

They can be done by the same person

#

But that's one person doing two roles

forest edge
hushed basalt
#

But not one role. If that makes sense

steel urchin
#

No QA should never do unit tests

wet pilot
#

SETs can

#

but QA should not

steel urchin
#

The person who writes it should be doing unit tests

wet pilot
#

truth

brisk glen
#

@forest edge what is this bullshit website

hushed basalt
#

Like most things people think of as devops, is that just a developer using automatic deployment

steel urchin
#

And if you're really wanting checks and balances, go cucumber

hushed basalt
#

On a managed cloud service

brisk glen
#

we all know win 10 is forever

steel urchin
#

Let the business define tests

wet pilot
#

but SETs can be much better at writing test fixtures for re-use

forest edge
#

@brisk glen the first linux injection windows.. phase1

brisk glen
#

what?

#

sources?

steel urchin
#

Can't say I know what an SET is

wet pilot
#

Software Engineer in Test

steel urchin
#

Oh, duh

wet pilot
#

they're the automation masters

steel urchin
#

Yeah cuz I'd never do that lol

wet pilot
#

haha

steel urchin
#

I use devops for that

wet pilot
#

we have full stack in one team so we have to do all our own shit

steel urchin
#

Ansible and done

#

That's ok

#

And honestly you're probably better off for it

wet pilot
#

in a lot of ways we are

#

until the company tries to make us work with others and they have no idea what we're doing

steel urchin
#

Too many chefs in the kitchen

forest edge
wet pilot
#

we're full py3 before the drop dead date, they are just starting their transition

forest edge
#

I mean there are lots of sources

#

that was an older one back in spet

#

sept

wet pilot
#

lots of speculation but nothing official

#

it smells right though

#

they've been contributing a lot of code to linux lately

steel urchin
#

Honestly there's no reason not to

wet pilot
#

and porting most of their money making software

steel urchin
#

But then licensing gets hairy

wet pilot
#

depends on where they want to play

steel urchin
#

Lots of tools would break their business model

wet pilot
#

add kernel stuff where it makes sense, sell their apps on top where it doesnt

steel urchin
#

It's what kinda makes Android a pain to build a new product with

wet pilot
#

open source things that they don't need to make money from

#

(.net)

steel urchin
#

Look at how vscode is treated by licensing nerds

wet pilot
#

i saw a writeup recently

#

apparently its fine

steel urchin
#

They fork and bastardize it to get proprietary info out

wet pilot
#

atom is better

#

(licensing wise)

steel urchin
#

Maybe but I haven't used it in so long to have any say on that

wet pilot
#

strictly from a licensing standpoint, atom is clearer

#

and more open

#

vscode isn't that bad though as things go

forest edge
#

i still use sublime

#

lol

wet pilot
#

lol

#

pycharm pro at work. vscode at home

forest edge
#

i have vscode and use it too but find myself opening sublime without thinking

steel urchin
#

after my experience with atom, i stayed on sublime for as long as i could

#

but now it's vscode or get rekt

wet pilot
#

atom was ok

#

electron apps...

steel urchin
#

well.. no.. i did intellij for a long time

#

electron is ok

wet pilot
#

when done well

steel urchin
#

chromium is big

wet pilot
#

i got a slack dev to admit to their memory hogging issues

#

he was praising a cli client

steel urchin
#

yeah i didn't like slack very much

wet pilot
#

i wish they'd stop fucking around and give us full markdown formatting

#

but they won't because its too scary for the scrubs

hushed basalt
#

Slack killed code blocks on mobile

#

They know who their market is, and don't care about the rest

wet pilot
#

company is trying to push us to use teams

steel urchin
#

i'd rather use discord honestly

#

and webhooks

wet pilot
#

the threading of slack is nice to have

steel urchin
#

eh... yeah... i can see that.... we always still opted to create new channels for lengthy discussions

wet pilot
#

some large rooms can become too messy without it

#

#engineering or #support

#

but all the damn TSEs blast atHere all the fucking time

#

had to mute any channels they join

wet pilot
#

ocean mirage
#

steel urchin
forest edge
#

the athere only pings those who aren't away

#

its the better choice

#

in most cases

wet pilot
#

usually

#

still not polite in rooms with many people

#

atEverone is disabled for all but the admin role i think

forest edge
#

i have those turned off globally lol

steel urchin
#

i disable it on all my discords

forest edge
#

i'll see the little red 1 or whatever but it won't like ping me

steel urchin
#

now, one thing server owners can do is create a role that everyone is assigned to, and then mention that one via a bot command (because you have to enable mentioning, mention, and immediately disable mentioning to avoid abuse)

#

i've left discord's over that

wet pilot
#

not sure how things are structured here

forest edge
#

gotta be admin to see the settings for the server

wet pilot
#

yup

forest edge
#

or atleast a role with permissions to do so

wet pilot
#

and i'm not that ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

I always thought discords permission structure was alittle messed up

#

but they havve gotten alittle better

#

when it first started it wa slimited as hell

steel urchin
#

btw, whoever it was that mentioend the great suspender, it's been working out pretty well

wet pilot
#

oh i use that one, its nice

steel urchin
#

as a test i noticed my chrome was using 500mb, and cycled every tab to test and it went up to 1.6gb instantly

wet pilot
#

oh, i use "the great discarder"

forest edge
#

just how many damn tabs do you need open?

#

lol

steel urchin
#

errr what's the difference?

wet pilot
#

i'm not sure

steel urchin
#

made by the same person

wet pilot
#

i switched for some reason but i don't remember why

steel urchin
#

well i was doign lots of research on legal matters for this contractor bs, so i had a shit ton open

wet pilot
#

i tend to have a ton open when i'm developing

#

researching apis and shit

steel urchin
#
Advantages over The Great Suspender:
- More memory savings
- Compatible with chrome tab syncing
- Super lightweight extension that uses no content scripts or persistent background scripts

Disadvantages over The Great Suspender:
- No visibility on which tabs have been suspended
- Unable to prevent a tab from reloading when it gains focus
wet pilot
#

its nice when i can move a story to dev-complete and close all that shit out

#

ah ok

#

i switched to it when he first released it

#

and kinda forgot about the other one

steel urchin
#

not sure what the last bullet point there implies

#

so once it's suspended you can't reload it?

wet pilot
#

if you switch tabs it instantly reloads it

steel urchin
#

oh, PREVENT

#

can't words, cuz brain

#

i also have a ton of extensions for dev stuff, so the less access to tabs the better

I don't think much about it. Working at Wal-Mart is an experience best forgotten

narrow marten

I started working at 12...

wet pilot

first IT gig at 16 (yay nepotism)

clear ferry

At 19 I'd had 8 different employers

wet pilot

managed to hold that for 4 years

narrow marten
#

Damn...

valid halo
#

dang atx you sure like to burn bridges

narrow marten
#

I was assuming at once

clear ferry
#

I've held my current job since I was 22, I'll have my 14th anniversary this year

scenic radish
#

Well this sucks. I forgot that Google WiFi doesn't support guest networks in bridge mode. So I either need to deal with double NAT or get a new AP

#

Since I'll have the edgerouter today

forest edge
#

thought you bought an asus lol

clear ferry
#

Told you when you bought it @scenic radish ๐Ÿ˜›

#

Edgerouter ๐Ÿคข

#

Google WiFi ๐Ÿคข

scenic radish
#

It's the Google WiFi that's the issue, not the edgerouter

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I told you when you bought the wifi

valid halo

I know that feeling Tediore

scenic radish

I bought it a long time ago fool

valid halo

My memory feels like a collander

clear ferry

@scenic radish you did?

Who tf did I berate

๐Ÿ˜‚

scenic radish

The Google WiFi, yeah. I've had it for years

clear ferry

I thought it was you

scenic radish

Since like 2017

valid halo

Who did you hurt atx?

clear ferry

A lot of people

valid halo

๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge

oh i thought you bought something neat.. i see i was mistaken lol

scenic radish
#

I guess I could just treat my WLAN as a separate network entirely

At least until I save up for a new AP

clear ferry

I have a lot of AP's

Sell one or 2? Will they work in the US

clear ferry

I have some CPUs in my garage very few others have

See this is what I mean

clear ferry

Itanium Madison CPUs

valid halo

"Ive got a few access points here. Some CPUs there. A random quantum computer in the attic from an old project."

You mean like my irf switch cluster @valid halo ?

valid halo

I dont even know what that is ๐Ÿ˜„

but sure

I have a rx3600 a rx6600, a rx4640 and a bl860c too

My collection currently is an excess of tv's and monitors

i've got like five

They're free

those ap's he has in boxes

narrow marten

Anyone remember Castle? Dos game?

valid halo
#

the only DOS game I know how to play is CMD

narrow marten
#

Lol, Iโ€™m old...

valid halo
#

along with it's cousin "How do I do this in CMD?"

forest edge
#

@scenic radish why did you decide to go with a non-wifi router?

narrow marten
#

I built my first robot at 9, in 1984... Iโ€™m really fโ€ing old.... Iโ€™ll shut up now...

forest edge
#

lol

#

@narrow marten I don't remembe rit, but i likely played that Castle game at least once

river rune
#

It depends on what you count as a "robot" I built a car that could follow lines when I was 10... That would have been 2002 lol

forest edge
#

I remember mostly Zork lol

narrow marten
#

Ok... at least Iโ€™m not the only one left

forest edge
#

Zork and that stupid Lucy Therapy game for ApplII

narrow marten
#

I had forgotten Zork, my first game with graphics,

dusky plank
#

my first game was Z

scenic radish
#

@forest edge I wanted to use my existing router as an AP. Guess I'll just return the edgerouter and buy one with WiFi

forest edge
#

your current is that google ap thing?

scenic radish
#

Yeah

narrow marten
#

My Atari made me royalty in my neighborhood.... lol

valid halo
#

Noice

forest edge
#

ah yea you are severely restricted with what all you can do with thos epucks

scenic radish
#

Yeah, it was honestly fine until it started acting up with a really dumb issue

#

If bridge mode supported guest networks it wouldn't even be an issue

forest edge
#

get you something that you can optionally flash with a custom firmware down the road

#

even if you end up nevver doing it

inner vault
#

Wireless bits often go bad before router bits (especially when routing processing contributes to extra heat on the wireless bits), thus separate AP and routers are a great idea

#

although that may have been more true 5+ years ago

forest edge
#

@inner vault i got an original wrt54g with ddwrt that will argue with you lol

inner vault
#

@forest edge I've got two dead ones in my "hey, one day I'll definitely cannibalize this for parts" box of broken stuff in the basement with a strong counter argument ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

lol

river rune
#

It is true that in general the wireless parts will fail first in my experience... But the wrt54gs were just beasts. I still have at least one of them somewhere

#

We use them for mesh networks at Ham Radio events

forest edge
#

i think 20 years or more is a pretty acceptable give-up-on-life span

inner vault
#

but yeah, they were workhorses

#

at least one of them probably didn't like living ontop of a crt monitor =\

forest edge

lol

#

yea that's the heat you spoke of

that and when people put them on top of old refrigerators

steel urchin

woo hoo doorbell should be in the mailbox

#

did you install yours yet @forest edge ?

forest edge
#

no i need to pick up a beefier powerthingiemajig

#

transformer

steel urchin
#

hmm... i bet i might have to as well...

forest edge
#

not sure what the min is but apparently those ring ones suggest a 30va so that's likely what i'll grab

#

think what i got now is like a 14-16 or something

steel urchin
#

oh shit, i think mine is 14-16 as well

#

about to go get it, then i'll start investigating

last dirge
#

what doorbell did you get?

forest edge
#

amercrest or whatever it is

#

thing was 89 bucks, wasn't about to pass it up considering the stupid rca thing i originally looked at went from 100 to 140ish over the course of 1 year

last dirge
#

local?

#

no cloud?

forest edge
#

yea has rtsp

#

it does both/can

last dirge
#

I just have a camera on my porch ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

I have a pi zero in the window currently lol but I wanted something with night vision

urban steppe
#

Just wanted to say this, don't know where else to put it.

I've been lurking and reading so much in the past few weeks and learned so much by just reading the channels and following links.
I really want to thank the group of regulars that always are ready to help or point in the right direction. Without your help I (and many others with me) wouldn't have the awesome setup I have now! Thanks for your time and patience!! Much appreciated! Love you guys! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘Š

steel urchin
#

I also would like to relay that sentiment. There's some good people in here

rain swift
#

I can tell you coming from domoticz, this discord and people who help have made a lot of my stuff possible.

#

in domoticz there was hardly anyone around, and the people you did find seemed to all be devs who only asked and answered other devs complicated crap.

#

so if you needed help you were pretty SOL. I was in a surveillance cam group with a programmer who used it and he helped me do the little bit of stuff i was doing with it.

steel urchin
#

Now the fun begins

#

no way this little chime thing would need 30VAC Sonoma

#

instructions don't even say, but imma go try it out

rain swift
#

saw a video of that

#

you most likely will need 30

steel urchin
#

oh i guess TO the doorbell, that makes sense

rain swift
#

that's the one the dude in the video used

#

his did weird stuff without it lol

steel urchin
#

i'll test mine in a bit at the front

rain swift
#

I think the one in place was 5va

steel urchin
#

the doorbell people said mine was giving too much power, which was the problem... it was basically hanging between the ding and th edong

rain swift
#

nice

#

I have it in an amazon list

#

haven't pulled the trigger yet

clear ferry
#

I love pixel art so much

steel urchin
#

i have 21.4 coming to the bell, so hoping it's enough

valid halo
#

Oh good you got Amcrest and not Ring

steel urchin
#

i'd never get a ring

#

amcrest came recommended by Sonoma, and i like the look of it

#

has a nice heft to it

#

chime kit didn't fit in my chime box ๐Ÿ˜ฆ but it's pretty small so eventually i'll forget about it

midnight adder
#

I installed pi hole today. I knew it would be much background tracking, but wtf?

steel urchin
#

heh yeah, surprising i'm sure

#

so... i thought this came with a microsd card, but i'm wondering if that's even necessary... i'm sure i could trigger off of motion and record directly, right? Or use some other software to manage that?

river rune
#

Can the Amcrest be battery powered? We don't have doorbell wires in our house and it is a rental so we can't add some.

forest edge
#

@steel urchin you don't need the sdcard, that's just if you want it to store files on the device itself

steel urchin
#

right... i was goign to look into motioneye at some point for this

forest edge
#

yea thats what i'll be using with it but the stream could be piped into many things

#

I think it comes with a year free of cloud storage as well or something

steel urchin
#

meh, don't care about that myself

#

storage is cheap

forest edge
#

so if your transfdormer was putting out 24vac that may be enough without needing the 30va dunno

#

haven't evven opened the box of mine yet so no idea what all the directions say

sour escarp
#

using motioneye here, pretty happy with it so far

brisk glen
#

Most smart doorbells use 24v ac...

#

Because that is what is there for doorbells

clever mortar
#

Depends on where in the world

#

8V AC seems to be pretty normal in the UK

clear ferry
#

8v AC

#

That was something I've never heard of before

sour escarp
#

me neither

clear ferry
#

Most classic Norwegian doorbells were 4-6 C or D batteries

#

Or a transformer that did 18v AC I think it was

forest edge
#

mine is putting out 22vac

#

not sure if thats enough

#

they just list a generic 16,24,30vvac lol

#

guess I can try it and if it's spazes then upgrade lol

steel urchin
#

i think the chime kit is just a capacitor inside to get it where it needs and regulate

forest edge
#

yea

#

it allows the current to flow around the chime so the thing has power

#

since your chime is eseentially a break in the point

#

well aside from those that has lighted doorbells so i guess the chime does allow some power through

last dirge
#

that's not how it works ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

it dosen't allow full power through i'd bet my life on it

last dirge
#

there's voltage going through the bell wires all the time but most of the time it's got resistance from the bulb

#

so it's below the threshold to trigger the chime

#

when you press the button it's a dead short

tidal bronze
#

Yep

last dirge
#

on the hardware page there's a picture of a doorbell button I converted to use DC voltage

#

I replaced the "grain of wheat" bulb with an LED and a resistor

#

then used a voltage divider at the microcontroller to drop it to where the input wasn't floating

forest edge
#

holy shit thats my doorbell button haha

#

my light burned out on mine tho lol

steel urchin
#

hmmm my chime just is constantly buzzin

forest edge
#

that dude said that what happend when his transformer was too small

#

so maybe i'll get a 30vac after all lol

steel urchin
#

Yeah might have to, and add caulking around it

#

yeah now it's not doing anything

#

might have to

forest edge
#

it didn't start smoking did it?

#

lol

#

the caulking comment has me a little worried with your ability to handle tools hehe

steel urchin
#

well the mounting plate doesn't fully sit flush with the surface

#

so there's like a 1/16" gap around the entire thing

forest edge
#

ah

#

use silicone not caulk

steel urchin
#

my ability with tools is plenty fine ๐Ÿ˜›

#

yeah, i just call it all caulk

#

but yeah, i getcha

forest edge
#

do you have a multimeter?

#

curious of those doorbell people measured your transformer right lol

#

cause 24vac should have worked fine from what i been reading

steel urchin
#

yeah that's how i was testing the 21.4 at the door

#

if i short the wires there it works as expected

#

with the doorbell attached it does nothing

#

it was buzzing for a short bit, but now nothing

forest edge
#

ah

brisk glen
#

@forest edge 22V is enough

forest edge
#

thats at the transformer tho

steel urchin
#

but for me to test it at the chime i need to short the wires, right?

forest edge
#

if his is buzzing at 21 at the ringer then i don't think 22 will be enough lol

steel urchin
#

well now it's not even buzzing

#

so yeah i don't think 22 will be enough

brisk glen
#

yay subpar wiring

steel urchin
#

welp, off to home depot i guess

last dirge
#

yay for no standardization

forest edge
#

well to be fair when doorbells came out noone expected there to be camera ran off the juice lol

brisk glen
#

@forest edge not an excuse

#

always plan for the future

forest edge
#

yea i don't think hippies planned that far ahead back when all this crap became common

hearty depot
young sigil
#

@last dirge More of a Rohde and Schwarz fan but very difficult to justify the expense for hobby use.

forest edge
#

wtf is that the matrix 2.0

last dirge
#

@young sigil I ordered the parts to breadboard that circuit

#

I'll know soon if it works or not

steel urchin
#

Yeah I mean, it sorta worked for a bit with the previous setup. It'd occasionally hang and buzz

#

Here we go

forest edge
inner vault
#

I need to figure out my doorbell, the transformer is sitting on top of my breaker panel, but the wires from it go directly into the back of the panel and I'm pretty sure it's literally mounted without a breaker associated with it, like pushed into the channels that the breakers clip into - there's also no voltage coming out of it

forest edge
#

I'm pretty sure it's literally mounted without a breaker associated with it, like pushed into the channels that the breakers clip into

ew

#

what home depot charge for that transformer codex?

steel urchin
#

I don't know what it is, but for the most part simple mechanical doorbells arebthr same really

forest edge
#

curious if i should pop over to amazon lol

steel urchin
#

19 +tax

forest edge
#

thats not bad

steel urchin
#

So just seeing your messages Brian, that's what I was thinking. Measured at the transformer and it's the same so no loss on the wire, but yeah gonna try this 30va.

brisk glen
#

oh hell ya, adguard home got some massive updates

#

pixelserv-tls here I come

last dirge
#

does that work any better than pihole?

steel urchin
#

I thought about doing the pihole thing, but tomato has a similar function built in

brisk glen
#

@last dirge a lot better

forest edge
#

too lazy to block ads

brisk glen
#

It checks if DNS responses contain any blacklisted IP addresses or CNAME records, and blocks DNS queries if there are any

steel urchin
#

Ah I see, instead of putting to 0.0.0.0 it'll actually respond with a pixel

brisk glen
#

aka disguised trackers

#

and yes, that will shrink down areas of empty space

forest edge
#

just give them your data and view thier spam.. livve life alittle

steel urchin
#

Timeouts go bye bye

forest edge
#

they have little children who need bread on the table too you know

inner vault
#

I thought pixelsrv-tls worked in conjunction with pihole

brisk glen
#

@inner vault yes but adguard has disguised trackers blocking

#

and no need to use other software for DOT or DOH

clear ferry
#

๐Ÿ˜‚

river rune
#

2 weeks later WTF was I thinking here?

clear ferry
#

Two weeks? Aren't you the optimist

river rune
#

Sorry 2 hours later

clear ferry
#

2 months rather Yikes

river rune
#

lol

#

true

#

I meant 2 hours later you would forget what you were doing...

clear ferry
#

Wait

#

What are we talking about?

#

๐Ÿ˜‚

river rune
forest edge
#

what do you mean by leave work undocumented? you mean not clocking out?

#

norwat to engrish plz

river rune
#

Apparently some people actually put these things called comments in their code... But they must be rare because I don't see them very often. ๐Ÿ˜‰

last dirge
#

@brisk glen that's what pihole does too

forest edge
#

ah

brisk glen
#

does it now?

last dirge
#

yes

#

it resolves the DNS request to its own IP

#

and 404s everything

brisk glen
#

they finaly updated it to have built in DoH and DoT?

last dirge
#

what?

brisk glen
#

dns over https or dns over tls

last dirge
#

oh, I don't know

#

it's the primary DNS server for my network

#

blocks a SHITLOAD of traffic

river rune
#

If you are using DNS over TLS then PiHole would have to keep a list of IP addresses, not just domain names

#

And it would have to reroute the actual packets instead of just change the DNS response

brisk glen
#

reading backlog changes

#

nope

steel urchin
#

Whew it gets hot up there

#

Out with the old, in with the new

#

Lol ok, still no ding dong.. must have something I need to enable in the app

hushed basalt
#

6 30 and baby is still asleep

#

How strange

last dirge
#

nothing says "great idea" like exposed electrical contacts in cellulose

steel urchin
#

I get a ding when I short it, has to be the unit not enabling the mechanical chime... Skybell has the same thing

#

Lol but I can't get this damn qr screen to focus

forest edge
#

@last dirge low voltage is acceptable lol

last dirge
#

it's 30VAC

forest edge
#

still considered low

hushed basalt
#

240v is considered low

forest edge
#

so is 600v to some

#

as they smoke

hushed basalt
#

Anything under 1000v AC I'm pretty sure

forest edge
#

@steel urchin in the video he said he had to switch the setting in the app from mechanical to digital to make the mechanical chime work lol

hushed basalt
#

The word you're looking for is extra low voltage

steel urchin
#

Yeah I figured... But for some reason this app will not focus at all. Camera apis fine

forest edge
#

i feel older with the fact that he had done all this and I don't think i left my chair once lol

steel urchin
#

Ok all is good

#

Working like a champ

#

And the video looks great

forest edge
#

was it the digital option?

#

or what

#

for the chime to work

last dirge
#

I hate javascript

steel urchin
#

yeah digital

#

it's so disgustingly hot and humid out

#

thermostat says it's 79% humidity in the house :S

#

what's wrong brian ... i can prolly help with that

amber bramble
#

ok ubuntu folks, how on earth do I disable going to sleep when the system is running on battery with the lid closed

amber bramble
#

my HA install is on an old laptop that I keep the lid closed on and any time there's a power outage it automatically goes into sleep mode no matter how full the battery is

amber bramble
#

i've tried like 4 different things over the past year and nothing has made a difference :[

#

but its been long enough that I forget what I've tried ๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge
#

sounds like a bios thing

brisk glen
#

โ€œsudo systemctl mask sleep.target suspend.target hibernate.target hybrid-sleep.targetโ€

#

The bios has nothing to do with this....

amber bramble
#

already did the HandleLidSwitch=ignore trick

brisk glen
#

Yah, that stops the lid thing

forest edge
#

the bios most certian can have something to do with this lol

brisk glen
#

You want to disable suspend

#

@forest edge this is Linux :p

amber bramble
#

downside is I would actually like it to suspend if the battery gets down to like 30% or something

#

but it just auto suspends

forest edge
#

i don't care if it was ronald mcdonal os

brisk glen
#

Ahhh

#

@amber bramble I need all of the scope requirements

amber bramble
#

though TBH maybe its better to just do a graceful shutdown when the battery gets low

brisk glen
#

Yah..... you would need to script that or do something else, thatโ€™s not systemd area

amber bramble
#

eh ill just turn it off all together

rain swift
#

can an echo show be used as a digital picture frame?

#

or is anyone using one as that.

brisk glen
rain swift
#

wife wants a picture frame but they are all like $150 and we already have some echos.

amber bramble
#

linux power management is less than great

brisk glen
#

Get a cheap android tablet for $50?

#

Yah..... itโ€™s all over the god dam place

#

Why I gave up for a NUC

rain swift
#

actually, I have a kindle I'm not really using, I need to see if it has a picture frame app though, also forgot how much space it has.

amber bramble
#

i think almost all of the kindle fires can be rooted now

forest edge
amber bramble
#

and even if not you can install google play

forest edge
#

thats what hassbot needs

#

a google command

velvet horizonBOT
forest edge
#

thats not the same

brisk glen
#

Not just any google command.. a lmgtfy

#

Hahaha

forest edge
#

actually i dislike that one they havve for that

steel urchin
#

lol i wonder if this doorbell would have worked fine on the old transformer

#

since it required an app config anyway

forest edge
#

lol

#

now you'll always wonder

#

I might try mine before swapping out the transformer just so you can live in peace

steel urchin
#

meh... i don't care... $20 was cheap

brisk glen
#

Finally got around to running my own ipv6 dns server at home

#

Now I need to set up the firewall for ipv6 :/

forest edge
#

your gonna cry if your house ever gets struck by lightning

brisk glen
#

Why?

forest edge
#

cause you got so much shit you'll have to resetup lol

brisk glen
#

Like replace a backup battery or 2?

forest edge
#

you think lightning will only effect the batteries?

steel urchin
brisk glen
#

And itโ€™s not like I donโ€™t have an ansible playbook for this or anything

#

Itโ€™s supposed to protect the gear from that :p

forest edge
#

lol that dog bark at the end was priceless

steel urchin
#

hehe he's been going bonkers over all my testing

#

at least with the 30vac in there i can swap out without having to be concerned

brisk glen
#

The controller for the firewall shit lives else where :p

forest edge
#

@brisk glen I've seen lighting melt a bed frame from a socket 3ft away.. i wouldn't bank on anything saving anything lol

brisk glen
#

@forest edge well... I guess then itโ€™s new gear, restore from backup and update my ansible inventory before redeploying

forest edge
#

hurts my back just thinking about it

brisk glen
#

I kinda hope now that there is a strike so I can upgrade some gear :p

#

It would be wife approved

#

Itโ€™s just a simple plug the new shit in, ssh and give it the server to adopt to and the rest is automated for the most part

#

Fix nas and pxe the rest

steel urchin
#

ok so the app is pretty decent... lets you set motion distance (kept triggering from across the street!) and the area to search for motion

forest edge
#

yea i won't be using the app lol

#

other than initial setup

#

just give me rtsp and i'll be good to go

steel urchin
#

yeah i need to still figure that out, but leave town early tomorrow morning and need to do other shit

#

at least it's up and running

forest edge
#

damn now i guess tomorrow i should install mine

steel urchin
#

yeah do it so you can help me with mine later ๐Ÿ˜‰

forest edge
#

cloud based oses ๐Ÿคข

steel urchin

?

forest edge
#

was watching a vvideo on alternative oses for 2020 and one of them was called friend or something which was a cloud based os

#

everything was driven through html5 and js lol

steel urchin
#

hmm one thing that's weird is you create an account via the app, but it doesn't work at all on their website

forest edge
#

some overseas companies have what they call "international" login for services such as apps that are not directly tied to their individual country websites

#

I have a few like that

steel urchin
#

errr so how do you do the cloud bs? I enabled it in the app, it said go to the site.. no workie

forest edge
#

wow jennifer love hewitt did not age well

no idea don't have it loaded

steel urchin

king of random over here lol

forest edge

did you watch the video on the doorbell? he walks you through the app

sortof lol

which video do you keep referring to?

the one you watched 10 seconds before purchasing it from amazon lol

but you said website so the video dosen't apply

steel urchin
#

you're assuming i watched that lol

forest edge
#

you said you did

steel urchin
#

the amazon link above it was what i was referring to ๐Ÿ˜›

forest edge
#

lol

steel urchin
#

ahh so that's what the secondary password was for... the rtsp stream

#

it just asked for a password for the doorbell, and i'm like " i just created an account, what do you want another password for?"

#

Lol called amcrest to ask about website login, and he wanted to take remote access of my pc

#

Lol yeah right

rain swift
#

do it

steel urchin
#

no way... he didn't even know what iw as talking about anyway

#

so i hungup

forest edge
#

lmao

#

wtf

steel urchin
#

anyway... guess this thing doesn't support viewing remotely

forest edge
#

remote access

steel urchin
#

so i'll have to figure out the rtsp stuff later

forest edge
#

what do you mean?

#

the app is the remotely lol

steel urchin
#

i mean off my network

#

like on my data plan on my phone

forest edge
#

thats the app

steel urchin
#

it errors every time ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

forest edge
#

if you want to view by pc you'd havve to pipe the rtsp feed out

rain swift
#

port forwarding

forest edge
#

you got a setting screwy or something

rain swift
#

make a DNS name that points to an install IP on the LAN, and your public IP on the WAN

#

internal*

#

app don't know the difference

steel urchin
#

there's no pointing to an ip anywhere in the app, so that's a futile exercise

rain swift
#

junk

#

lol

steel urchin
#

ok finally worked after 20 tries

rain swift
#

so its using their server as a proxy? no thanks.

forest edge
#

maybe the dude remotely took control of your phone haha

rain swift
#

the chinese are watching you touch yourself.

steel urchin
#

lol

#

yeah that's why this is only temporary

rain swift
#

my cams cant talk to the internet

steel urchin
#

most off the shelf doorbell cameras work that way

rain swift
#

because its an easy way for dummies to see the cam remotely without doing any setup

steel urchin
#

anyway, it's working, only ~4s delay which isn't bad

rain swift
#

woohoo

steel urchin
#

it'll let me hopefully answer when i'm away

forest edge
#

wait

#

4second delay?

#

to the app?

steel urchin
#

yeah, when on my 4g

forest edge
#

while ons ame network there should be next to no delay

#

oh

#

even still

#

4 seconds sound a bit much

#

maybe they are being flooded with evveryone buying the dmn thing lol

#

I mean it is currently the cheapiest doorbell cam with the features

hushed basalt
#

You'll need digest auth

#

To access the rtsp

river rune
#

Just a standard RF doorbell usually has ~1 second delay (at least all the ones I have had 3-4 different brands)

rain swift
#

I don't wanna talk to people or have a doorbell, I just want to see.

forest edge
#

make your life alittle easier

steel urchin
#

I'm not sure which route I'll be taking. I don't have much need for anything complex, so I'll be taking a look at everything soon enough. But glad it's working at all right now.

#

pulls up in VLC just fine as well ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

aren't you using the ha app?

steel urchin
#

yeah i'm just toying with things

forest edge
#

I thought you had your crap setup to access ha outside your network

#

ah yea then install the motioneye addon

#

and pipe it in there

steel urchin
#

i don't run hassio

forest edge
#

then presto you got access remoetly lol

steel urchin
#

but... still...

forest edge
#

oh thats right

#

haha

steel urchin
#

i sorta have it remotely accessible... i need to toy with port forwarding since i don't have NAT loopback

#

that has been a serious PITA

forest edge
#

you can install motioneye on it's own on the same machine

#

and then use that

steel urchin
#

i'm talkin about with HA

forest edge
#

i know

#

then you pipe the feed from the motioneye into ha

steel urchin
#

i have another service running 443 already so i need to map out my ports properly

#

or go update all my alexa skills to point to a different port

forest edge
#

actually just using the amercrest intergration would be your easist by far method of getting the feed into ha

#

but you wouldn't have any nvr with that

steel urchin
#

right, and i kinda want that because we've been having issues with our postal worker

#

i wanna record her being a POS

forest edge
#

then install motioneye on the same machine > your next project lool

steel urchin
#

yep... but still i need to figure the port thing out...

hushed basalt
#

Reverse proxy?

steel urchin
#

for example, i have dnsmasq pointing to my internal IP for my domain, but internally it's listening on 8123... router is forwarding 443->8123, but NAT loopback missing that doesn't work... so internally i need to also run on 443, except i have nginx already listening on 443 so that won't work just yet without proxying

#

like i said, i gotta figure out how i want it

#

or i can j ust run HA on 8123 over ssl but then i have a lot of other crap to update

#

it's just somethin i gotta work through, not ready to dive into that.. i have a house to clean since the wife is on the way home!
