AWS lets us upload 75GB of Lambda functions. Each function can be 50MB in size. We simply split up the video into Lambda functions. There's a few problems with this though, first off Lambda only allows zip files. How do we get around this, we zip up the video.

#

@inner vaultIf people started abusing that it would screw over the Lambda team badly! Everything is charged internally within AWS so they're paying for bandwidth usage internally!

pure vine

It is a thing

#

What's really interesting is that a lot of these traditions are quite recent (that is releitve to the existence of Wales), this is because during the era where Wales was taken by England and the Victorian era, the Welsh culture was quite heavily suppressed. A lot of the traditions we see now are from the late 1800s where a society of Welsh people who wanted to give the Welsh an identity again

#

Here is an example of some of the suppression that the English did towards the Welsh https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_Not

The Welsh Not (also Welsh Knot, Welsh Note, Welsh Stick, Welsh Lead or Cwstom) was an item used in Welsh schools in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries to stigmatise and punish children using the Welsh language.

Typically The Not was a piece of wood, a ruler or a stick, often ...

they have over 4.5 million in stocks

when I worked for a startup there were massive government (Quebec/Canada) incentives to hire tech talent, so like 90% of all employees salaries at the startup were paid for by government bursaries, there were even startups spawned specifically to help businesses apply for these credits

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I've heard of that over here too

i don't believe that's a thing here... i mean with the bailout issue we had some years back everyone here is anti-socialism

heh anyway, this is why you don't talk politics ๐Ÿ˜›

unreal orbit

wet pilot

the distinction for me is usually "America" or "Americas"

unreal orbit

I was just messing anyway, I'm Californian

steel urchin

well, it was turned into geography, the originating conversation was governmental attributions towards funding startups ๐Ÿ˜› then somehow semantics got tossed out the window and the convo turned to what do you call america

but aside, the point is, these folks have a shit ton in apple stock and i'm jealous ๐Ÿคฃ

#

unreal orbit

I used to hate Apple, now I will just say I hate some things that Apple does

scenic radish

apple's pricing on things is asinine

wet pilot

i don't hate the company, i hate the fanboys

the customers that enable them to do the dumb stuff they do

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I have a customer we're they just order 50 of the biggest iPhone as soon as it comes out

unreal orbit

One of the reasons their prices are high is due to their privacy policies. They aren't subsidizing their prices by selling literally all of your information that they possibly can

wet pilot

i mean, its smart cash grabbing, but its all cash grabbing

they've spent a ton of time developing an image that convinces people that paying way more for their product is a good thing

its all marketing

yeah, if you run anything other than MacOS on them they hit thermal throttling pretty hard. they undervolt things to try to keep the temps down

same

#

only reason i have a mac for work is it was the best available hardware out of what i was offered by IT

plus, we develop a product that runs in containers and doing that in windows is a hard pass ๐Ÿ˜›

their mobile is just as bad to be honest

the adoption numbers have been lagging lately but their revenues haven't dropped because they keep raising the prices

My ideal setup would be 2 landscape, 1 portrait

steel urchin
#

lol i wish i had a pic... one of my guys had 7 monitors... i hated him

#

they were across 3 systems, too, which was more annoying... so the dude had 3 keyboards and 3 mice, and never knew which he should be touching, and of course we never knew

unreal orbit
#

3 sets of peripherals ๐Ÿคข

#

they make switchers for that reason

steel urchin
#

yeah, i literally bought him a kvm switch for that

#

and a license of synergy

#

he pissed me off, i was glad to fire him lol

scenic radish
#

sounds like 2 idiots one keyboard but in reverse

steel urchin
#

lol

#

yeah, that was a fun running joke for us as well

wet pilot
#

there used to be an app out there that would work across systems

#

synergy i think it was

steel urchin
#

during post mortems i'd always give him shit "so i see your productivity stayed the same, do we need another keyboard and monitor?"

wet pilot
#

oh

#

too slow ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

clear ferry
#

@wet pilot yeah works nice

steel urchin
#

hehe yep, i got him that as well

wet pilot
#

i used it for a while

clear ferry
#

I've used it across Mac, Linux and Windows

steel urchin
#

he was also the kind to use nano

#

so... that should say a lot

wet pilot
#

heh

unreal orbit
#

I use nano in the very rare occasions when I feel the need to edit directly in the console ๐Ÿคท

scenic radish
#

i use nano ๐Ÿ™

#

dammit

unreal orbit
#

apparently we are n00bs

clear ferry
#

I should order that ZigBee board tinkerer recommended

clever mortar
#

nano.... ๐Ÿคข

wet pilot
#

i use nano when vim decides to be terrible and destroys my formatting

#

usually when pasting yaml

unreal orbit
#

when vim decides to be terrible so 28 years ago?

clever mortar
#

vi -u NONE somefile.yaml

#

-u NONE tells vim to behave like vi

steel urchin
#

:set paste

#

i actually use vscode these days

#

but i used to be the nerd that spent a week adding nerdtree, projects, ctags, etc to the env

unreal orbit
#

code server is a life changer

steel urchin
#

i've been wanting to look into that

#

is that the new "fuck it, we'll do it live" m.o.?

scenic radish
#

i'm a linux n00b so let me use my nano in peace for now

steel urchin
#

nothing wrong with being a n00b

#

we all start somewhere

scenic radish
#

been having a blast honestly

clever mortar
#

nano is fine, until you need something more powerful

steel urchin
#

what is wrong, is working in a company doing 50 billion a month, and using 3 mice and keyboards while using nano ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

scenic radish
#

oof

clever mortar
#

vi has the power of tools like sed hidden in it, and that's where the real game changes start to show up

steel urchin
#

yeah i think with HA type work is great.. edit a file, boom done... copy/paste... great... but when you need to refactor a file, you need more power

#

cursor editing has changed my life

scenic radish
#

yeah i'm not doing anything crazy with files

unreal orbit
#

same

#

my current linux level of expertise is googling things that I need to do

#

almost every time

scenic radish
#

i'm at the point when i can at least spin up a new python venv without googling the command lol

steel urchin
#

isn't it amazing we can do that now?

#

when i was a kid i wanted to learn c++... i had to order a book that took 16 weeks to deliver

scenic radish
#

and do other things with it

clever mortar
#
:1,$s/\(.*\)/\U\1/
```Try that in `vim` some time ๐Ÿ˜‰
scenic radish
#
that looks like the bash fork bomb
steel urchin
#
i still remember the "Learn <X-LANGUAGE> in 24 hours!" books and it took 3 weeks
scenic radish
#
but longer
clever mortar
#
Nah, it's harmless
#
It should just convert everything to upper case
scenic radish
#
suuuuuure
clever mortar
#
sed is fun
scenic radish
#
brb gonna run rm -rf /
steel urchin
#
if i had to guess it just uppercases
#
oh, damn... why is discord failing me lately? it stops auto-scrolling
clever mortar
#
For chaos, something like:
:1,$s/\(.\)\(.\)/\2\1/g
```which should, in theory, flip every character pair
scenic radish
#

lol i love it

clever mortar
#

Yes, I spent too much time with sed and related tools ๐Ÿ˜›

scenic radish
#

i see that

steel urchin
#

oh man... dvorak keyboard anyone? Hated working with a guy that had that layout... helping him was an exercise in futility

clever mortar
#

I've only used it to prank folks

steel urchin
#

that was his main reason, then he turned into a proper neckbeard

#

so what do you use code server for @unreal orbit ?

#

i actually can see that super useful for WSL since it's a half-baked implementation

#

no more need for x-windows hackery

unreal orbit
#

I use code server to make changes to my server config files (mainly HA config files)

steel urchin
#

ah, i just created a samba share for them that only i can access... it's running anyway, might as well use it

unreal orbit
#

The real benefit is editing remotely

steel urchin
#

mmm yeah... i have a differing opinion on that ๐Ÿ˜‰ but ok was just curious of use-cases

last dirge
#

typing is WAY better on dvorak

#

but it doesn't work well AT ALL for programming

errant steeple
#

Lol got my HAssio setup

#

Way in over my head already lol

#

Can't seem to access it with my duckdns tho, I have one setup already I can vpn into my network tho soooooo I can just go that route lol

#

Openvpn

#

@last dirge you put winter tires on your electrics?

steel urchin
#

so... my laptop just suddenly started seeing an orphaned USB cable as an unknown hub

#

... that's not freaky at all....

scenic radish
#

๐Ÿ‘ป

scenic radish
#

The smell of sauteed garlic is seriously the best

last dirge
#

@errant steeple I live in Atlanta

#

so no

all seasons are good enough down here

Thatโ€™s for not sharing that delicious looking food with the rest of us!

scenic radish

oh shit... well, i do have leftovers

peak cloud

Now Iโ€™m hungry, and I just ate candy. Haha

#

Be right over! See you in 10.

scenic radish
#

๐Ÿ‘

#

super easy recipe, i can send it over if you want

#

modified version of a recipe from the back of the pasta box lol

peak cloud
#

Whatโ€™s the โ€œspicyโ€ part?

#

A friend of mine gave me a Mac n cheese recipe the other day that I still need to try my hand at. It was soooo good the way she made it.

wet pilot
#

my wife has a version that uses a bechamel cream sauce as a base

#

we call it "crack and cheese"

#

orecchiette for the pasta hatch green chilies in the sauce and prosciutto for the protein ๐Ÿ˜„

green inlet
#

Holy crap. Thatโ€™s not Mac and cheese.

wet pilot

๐Ÿ˜›

green inlet
#

Sounds like a New York Italian spin on Mac and cheese.

scenic radish

@peak cloud chili powder ๐Ÿ˜‹

#

The recipe calls for red pepper flakes but I was out so I had to improvise

peak cloud

Nom nom nom nom nom

young sigil

Wait, how do you make mac and cheese without a roux/bechamel? I mean other than "Mac's famous Mac'n Cheese".

Star.Wars.Holiday.Special.

peak cloud

Out visiting my parents this weekend and somehow we landed on watching Christmas movies. Started with โ€˜94 remake of Santa Claus, now Elf, and maybe next will be Die Hard!

scenic radish
#

Christmas Story is another good one.

#

Frageelay... Hmm. Must be Italian.

steel urchin
#

my wife makes me watch all of the harry potter series for christmas

young sigil
#

@steel urchin Hey man what's with the thumbs down? Next you'll be saying Battlefield Earth is not the ultimate cinematic scif experience that unites critics, audiences and studios in their acclaim.

peak cloud
#

I am so over Christmas Story. :/

scenic radish
#

The 24-hour loop doesn't help lol

steel urchin
#

lol @young sigil you funny

ocean mirage
#

I don't think I have ever seen Christmas Story

steel urchin
#

the classic?

wet pilot
#

its a bit racist ๐Ÿ˜›

steel urchin
#

mmm a tiny yeah

scenic radish
#

Yeah they definitely couldn't make that movie today lol

wet pilot
#

๐Ÿ˜„

scenic radish
#

How the Grinch stole Christmas is my second favorite (Elf is my first)

peak cloud

Yeah, the annual 24 hour loop is what killed it for me.

#

Ooooo! Grinch is so good too!!

scenic radish
#

"I'm an idiot"
You're an idiot

steel urchin
#

I still say Firefly Season 1 is my favorite thing to watch

isn't that the only season?

peak cloud

And you donโ€™t like Harry Potter? ๐Ÿคฃ

I say them all the time

peak cloud
#

My ex girlfriend made me go to see every HP movie with her opening night...

steel urchin
#

Honestly I only care about a few movies

peak cloud
#

I fell asleep every single time.

scenic radish
#

"oof big" lol

steel urchin
#

Pulp fiction, back to the Future trilogy, Indiana Jones trilogy (4th is a lie), and probably a few I can't think of cuz of this rum

wet pilot

only you can reverse it ๐Ÿ˜›

scenic radish
#

Biggest of oofs

peak cloud

PF is a good one.

steel urchin
#

i like a lot of QT movies, but that's the top for me

peak cloud
#

โ€œMmmm that is a tasty burger!โ€

scenic radish
#

Batman trilogy for me.

steel urchin
#

django is prolly 2nd

scenic radish
#

Bourne trilogy also (fourth is a lie)

peak cloud
#

I wasnโ€™t able to make it through Django I donโ€™t think.

steel urchin
#

ok i hate matt damon but yes that is a great action flick

#

it's hard for django, but there's a lot of cinematic genius in it

scenic radish
steel urchin

lol

ocean mirage

would that not be the 25th?

peak cloud

Lmao

scenic radish

I believe it's unclear actually

#

Oh whoops, no religion

peak cloud

What are you doing with your life?!

scenic radish

scenic radish

Woody harrelson, Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood

peak cloud

Sandler and Swardson are up there for me too.

scenic radish

Zombieland was too funny

steel urchin

i actually don't really have a favorite list of actors

peak cloud
#

Ahh, good olโ€™ classic actors there!

steel urchin
#

oh man i'm actually excited for ZL2

ocean mirage
#

I'd not put ferrell or sandler on the list lol

steel urchin
#

drew barrymore used to be a favorite for naughty reasons

#

lol

peak cloud
#

Theyโ€™re both โ€œspecialโ€ actors that are love/hate I guess.

steel urchin
#

i loathed ferrell until step brothers

ocean mirage
#

I like Dustin Hoffman

steel urchin
#

that movie makes me laugh so hard

peak cloud
#

Mmmm 50 First Dates was pretty good.

steel urchin
#

i also love me some kathryn hahn (iirc?)

i've never seen that crap on the left, and i hate it with the passion of a thousand burning suns

nah i'm not happy about it either... but like i said.. austin is crazy

scenic radish

Your house fucking sucks

steel urchin

it's blowing up, our house we're selling is up 400%

#

this one is probably goign to be up 400% in a few years

wet pilot

we briefly considered moving there but we missed the window

scenic radish

Oh shit

wet pilot

so Charlotte

steel urchin

scenic radish

That's yuge

steel urchin

we're already up 30k in 2 years

steel urchin

if you can beat your taxes, you're charlie sheen winning

wet pilot

heh, they just finally re-assessed for the first time in like 10 years

steel urchin

are you an IT service?

clear ferry

I work in it yes

steel urchin

you keep mentioning customer, i wasn't sure the capacity that meant

#

i was goign to ask if you use spiceworks, but it sounds like you work for a company

clear ferry
#

I'm an escort you see

#

But most of my clients are men of it

steel urchin

twenty dollah make you hollah

clear ferry
#

Spiceworks ๐Ÿคข

steel urchin

heh we made a lot of people rich ๐Ÿ™‚

#

And always end up in the front-page of Google

wet pilot

spiceworks?

steel urchin
#

oh you're talking about the forum

#

that's basically overstack without being overstack... similar results, but overstack does often have better results

#

but it's also a small business IT tech stack

#

wmi(ads) and ssh auth into systems, monitoring, qos for storage and network, complete desktop support ticket system, easy remoting, vlan config, ink monitoring, inventory, purchasing, alerts, etc etc etc

wet pilot
#

i work for a company that produces a monitoring system

#

so none of the companies i work with use spiceworks ๐Ÿ˜›

steel urchin
#

heh neither do i

#

i only started the architecture and processes for the company

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I don't think I have ever heard of any Scandinavian customer using spiceworks

#

Someone in Europe might, but I have never heard of that either

steel urchin
#

it's for small businesses, or independent IT consultants

#

since it's free it has a lot of traction in those markets

clear ferry
#

I work with everything from single employee companies to the biggest Scandinavian ones

steel urchin
#

nice

#

i have mostly only worked with american companies, that outsource to other countries

#

like i worked at Dell for a while doing R&D for a certain space

#

but i mostly had meetings at 3am

nah, we need each other.. .the dev and the implementation

decent talk @hushed basalt

hushed basalt

@steel urchin I've watched half of it

#

Unbroken time to watch a talk is a luxury nowadays

steel urchin
#

there's a few fundamental things i feel he's missing, and he's a bit of a shit talker, but he has good points

hushed basalt
#

I feel like it's what happens when people use flask to build everything when they don't have the architectural experience etc

#

Saying that as someone who used flask to build something without architectural experience

wet pilot
#

๐Ÿ˜›

hushed basalt
#

But that was just a single purpose API

wet pilot
#

i got paid to go to pycon this year, that was fun

hushed basalt
#

Jelly

steel urchin
#

i'll bow out of the python convo ๐Ÿ˜›

wet pilot
#

but i agree, sitting down to listen to a talk is really hard to do if you're not getting paid to do it

steel urchin
#

heh, guess i'm that nerd that listens to talks

#

i prefer listening to opinions rather than books, as they're typically out of date before they're printed (and i know some of the asshats that are writing these books, and they aren't any authority on the topics)

#

from these opinions, i build my own

#

i see others failures, as well as my own, and build contingencies in my next project

#

i feel like his approach is ... in texas we'd call it like a shadetree mechanic

#

a dude using a shady tree to sling a rope over to pull his engine out of his bay

#

it works, it's effective, it's easy, and it's cheap

#

but... it's not professional, and it won't scale

#

i'm drunk watching architecture vids, i am going to shut up now lol

#

ok i changed my mind, this talk is trash

wet pilot
#

XD

hushed basalt
#

Does it get worse

#

That's the thing about talks, if you target them at people who aren't more experienced than you you can bullshit about anything

#

Like when I give my homeassistant talk next year, no one at the meetup has touched it

steel urchin
#

i'm trying to think of a word and my brain is melting

#

basically, he's giving a scenario that is super specific, and his design is specific, and limited on purpose, but he plays it off like he saves the day

#

the word is like on the tip of my tongue

#

i'd describe it as "an intentional situation described specifically TO example"

hushed basalt
#

Not strawman,

#

A solution finding a problem?

steel urchin
#

no no, it's not a fallacy

#

i don't believe

#

yes, that would be a good alternative description

#

i wanna say the word starts with a C, but damn if i cannot think of it

#

the words constipated and arbitrary keep coming to mind

#

CONTRIVED

#

omfg

#

i got it

#

holy shit i deserve a nobel prize

hushed basalt
#

The nobel pizza prize

steel urchin
#

he at least mentions conway's law

#

i have mixed feelings on this talk, but overall his example is contrived to tell a story, which i'm not a fan of

#

last word on the matter.. his title was "Avoiding Microservice Megadisasters", and really he just hacked around it.. so... that's a farce imo. bypassing would be a better word. but it was a good watch either way.

anyone here gifted at packet sniffing? ๐Ÿ™‚ I'm using Wireshark to try and find my water softeners communications so that I could intercept them and write an integration for it, but the only packets seemingly coming from the softener's IP address are IGMP messages to a multicast address

clever mortar
#

That's because your network is switched

#

You need to monitor it at the switch or gateway

echo tide
#

ack... alright, I'll try and dive into that one then

clever mortar
#

It's relatively easy if the switch or gateway supports port mirroring

Otherwise you're into the realms of network taps

I've got a unifi switch; from what I quickly googled, I should be able to use Wireshark's SSHDump utility to SSH into the switch (or AP)

If you've a spare port, set that up to mirror the port that your water softener or access point is connected to

Then hook your laptop up to that port, with DHCP disabled for this, and capture the traffic

If you can hook up a USB network adapter, that'll allow you to leave it running while still using the laptop normally

Portsniffing, so much fun when doing it on a 256 port stack uplink ๐Ÿ˜›

Now it's been posted a_few + 1 times

a_few = a_few + 1

or better written: a_few++

#

Gotta love getting gifts! Wish I was a thoughtful gift giver

wet pilot
#

a_few += 1 in other languages

#

++ is good for C based languages

steel urchin
#

correction, ecmascript-based languages

#

and += <n> should work in every language that ++ works in, they're both overridden operators

#

anywho, i'm just joshin ya

i have no clue who this omaha steaks delivery is from

Has anyone else had issues with win32 disk imager lately. I always get a weird error and canโ€™t complete an image.

#

I will post error next time it comes up

#

Wonder if there is anything better though

For writing images etcher

Well, yeah, the ultimate tool for cloning anything

#

Also handy for cloning your network traffic to the speaker...

Experience is everything

#

And @clever mortar has it

clever mortar
#

Lots of fun to be had playing pranks on folks

green inlet

Yea, I think I was selecting the wrong partition or something. I have etcher for writing but it does not clone.

#

This last go around I selected a different partition and so far it has been successful ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป

@steel urchin everyone is getting gift cards this year lol

You are getting something else xi2

Or whatever it is

clear ferry
#

I did gift cards for everyone last year, but I was 2 months into a baby

#

This year everyone gets proper presents again

clever mortar
#

We've a mix - proper presents for most, but some are getting gift cards because they're hard to buy for

clear ferry
#

I'm a pita to buy for

steel urchin
#

i actually do give SOME decent gifts from time to time

green inlet

I ask for gift cards, or cash.

They are happy, I am happy. Everyone is happy happy happy

good ol 9v etching... that i promptly switched to my 20v drill battery cuz that took too long ๐Ÿคฃ

midnight adder
#

this might be beyond the scope of this server, but does anyone have any recommendations for a modem and router for a relatively small two-story home? my speed cap is 200 mbps, and im just getting started in the home automation world

clever mortar
#

What kind of connection, and where in the world?

midnight adder
#

california, spectrum cable

clever mortar
#

Then you need to check first what's supported there ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

I'd suggest one that can operate as a pure modem, so you can hook up your choice of router behind it, and separate access points

#

Unifi is popular

midnight adder
#

i was hopeful that amplifi had some kind of modem, but it doesnt look like it

#

is something like the motorola surfboard 6120 plus the ubiquiti amplifi overkill?

clever mortar
#

Eh, in this crowd there's no such thing as overkill

#

just open fire and reload

#

Though, I'd probably suggest the Unifi Gateway and separate access points, rather than the Amplifi

#

That'll give you more capability and flexibility

scenic radish
#

I went with a $40 tp-link modem lol (max 343 down or something)

clever mortar
#

I'm currently on a stock Fritz!Box router, though when we finally get decent broadband it'll be Unifi or Mikrotik

midnight adder
#

id love to โ€œfutureproofโ€ my setup as much as possible in the off chance we do ever get fiber at our home

clever mortar
#

Unifi is the popular semi-pro route

midnight adder
#

whats the difference between amplifi and gateway?

clever mortar
#

Amplifi is aimed at typical home users

#

The main Unifi range is semi-pro

#

So, more features, more control, more cost

midnight adder
#

i dont even know what to buy for the unifi

midnight adder
#

the dream machine is an all-in-one solution after a modem?

clever mortar
#

Yes

midnight adder
#

hmm, okay. so if i go with the dream machine, itโ€™s kind of like entry-level prosumer networking?

wet pilot
#

its their "gateway" gateway ๐Ÿ˜›

and ill need to do scary things like research and learn

Free with your own hardware ๐Ÿ˜›

clever mortar
#

Yeah, decent hardware with no moving parts costs though

clear ferry
#

I haven't paid a cent in almost 20 years

#

I'll tell you the second server I ran it on

#

I picked it up from the local hospital, a self built ATX full tower they used for backups

#

P3, hostname Viagra

#

๐Ÿ˜‚

clever mortar
#

Mind you, the hardware they sell these days looks pretty neat

clear ferry
#

I still remember the sticker on top

#

With fqdn containing Viagra as the hostname

clever mortar
#

๐Ÿคฃ

clear ferry
#

Aye, they sell cool stuff, but that is for the Enterprise guys who pay for support imo

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but a decent box with multiple ports... building my own would cost the same or more

#

Then again, I've a history of building my own...

clear ferry
#

I run it off a AliExpress mini computer ATM, cost me $100 ish with shipping, 60gb SSD and memory included

#

Good enough for the stuff I'm hitting it with

clever mortar
#

I'm likely to want (at least) two LAN ports and two WAN ports if I can

#

That'll give me a primary and fail-over WAN, plus a separated guest network

clear ferry
#

Yeah, this only has two total, but a four port was only $10 up

clever mortar
#

That's pretty reasonable

clear ferry
#

I might order a four port one and reuse this for HA or even as a desktop

clever mortar
#

Link?

#

Not that AliExpress needs more of my money, but I haven't ordered from them in at least an hour...

clear ferry
#

I bought mine on sale, think it was 11.11 actually last year

#

Just search Ali for pfsense
