lol i dont live more than 50m from a swamp
Hey, would it be worth doing a fresh install of HA since I've been running a HA server for the last year and a half, lots of stuff changed since then
LOL i will bet lots of money ....i have more guns than u
and ammo
@unkempt night possible then you can add back little by little ..or just read change notes
Yeah thats what im thinking
I've been keeping up with change notes
I'd imagine there is traces of previous intergrations that no longer work etc
I have 0, you win @dull chasm
LOL
@unkempt night i see your point thou ...with fresh your instance will be up then you can test little by little with added configs
I'll be honest the only automations I have right now are smart plug notifications for my washing machine etc
Brb ship Christmas 🎁 to vasiley, to: guy with crosses, address :next to swamp, truck country, gatorland, home of the brave
Successfully delivered

Is 64 bit or 32bit better?
LOL .... i am in a very catholic area
@unkempt night ask in #330990055533576204 i run either bare metal or docker
I'm running on RPI 3 B+ to clarify
You mean "the south" Vasiley? 😂
yes louisiana ...we still have parishes (instead of county) based on the church
@unkempt night Try the relevant install method channel - HA related questions are off topic here 😉
Norway finally separated state and church a few years ago
I still had to opt out of being a member of the church, for the third time...
well it is seperate just we follow the church and never saw a reason to change
They set us up the bomb
Turns out I'm the blanket stealer
Vasiley, tinkerer and in the lower one
Tediore in the upper

I'm the guy with the blow dryer
Ok boomer

@clever mortar the fossil collider is a nonstarter for me. You were right, it only supports notifications from 13 apps. They're supposed to release support for a longer list of apps by the end of the year but it's still terrible. Such a disappointment
I can't buy it and just hope they release support for all apps, that'd be dumb
Yeah.... need to wait and see what they actually do, vs what they promise
@clear ferry no idea I'll add One back on a bit

i like the to watch atxbyea lot, but the lack of notifications is a total deal breaker
shame too because it's 30% off on fossil's website, making it $135 before tax
kink shaming, smh
it's 2015!
I like smelling new PCBs
Last time I was in a locker room with older men, they started whistling Take On Me by a-ha.
Surprised me a bit, until I realized that song is 35 years old, and those old men where my age back then...
that music video is pretty cool
I love it
speaking of which, the music video for panic station by muse is probably the funniest music video i've ever watched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uBK5kvakD8
Watch the music video for "Panic Station" now! Get Muse's album THE 2ND LAW here: http://smarturl.it/the2ndlaw http://muse.mu http://instagram.com/muse http:...
it's like a fever dream
as the discord preview probably indicates
does anybody knows some complex software which will be able to retrieve from folders/metadata tags/dbs all files filtered by date&time, gps, metatag name etc
for example: Give me all images with John
another example: Give me all documents created before 01/01/2020
I want to be able to see documents (pdfs, docs, xlsx, txt), images (png, jpeg, bmp), videos (mkv,mp4, avi..)
Those are waaaay different problems...
Google though... they did sell a search appliance
Any OS can sort by date. Lots of programs can do gps coordinates for pictures. Saying if John is in a picture is... tough... and processing video in the same way is a whole other level.
Didn't they kill that in 2018?
No idea, I don't know anybody that actually bought it
Didn't they kill that in 2018?
certainly sounds like google
Nah, if it really was Google it'd be when did they kill it
true lol. also tinkerer i think instead of buying the collider i'm gonna hang on to my PTR for dear life and buy a pixel 3a xl instead
i'm hoping it goes down to $379 on amazon like at best buy, google store, etc. because i have $100 in amazon credit
and i'm currently still on the OG pixel xl
Snap
I debated getting a 3A XL in the current sale, but... there's nothing really wrong with the phone
yeah i like the pixel xl but the lack of future updates now is gonna be a killer for me
guess a custom rom is always an option, as long as it doesn't kill google pay
Oh, I agree, but I'm only going to worry about that with Android 11 - at which time the Pixel 5 will be on the horizon
that's a good point
given google's recent work with the pixel line though, i don't have much confidence...
I'm not ready to buy a phone without a fingerprint sensor
Maybe the face unlock won't be a train wreck next year
thanks guys
just I wanted to implement, for example I have a problem with my bank account
I enter home, and say hey Alexa, give me my records from bank from period 01/01/2020 - 01/03/2020
or my friend come to me, and I want to show our photos/videos
I need just some ultra heavy-duty complex prgram for all of that
and above of that user management, permissions etc
I was thinking to buy qnap nas
@clever mortar can't give up the fingerprint sensor. it's dumb but my fiancee has the 3a xl and i'm jealous that she has AOD and i don't lol
that should have been obvious to them when amazon put alexa in a microwave lol
something that you always have to physically interact with to use
That is until they release the Echo Bot that can go grab your food for you
The fact that you have one forced interface never stopped people from adding another, stupider, one...
Also most microwaves have way too many number buttons. You could easily remove half of them.
Like when pumping gas, and you have to move your hand from the physical number buttons where you just typed your bank pin, take off your gloves in the freezing cold, and select a pump number from a touch screen.
I know of one chain of pumps here that use the same keypad for both.
They all used to!
Then someone decided they had to have a touch screen, because give me your money, that’s why!
yeah that's insane to me
Around here it’s common to have one POS for several pumps.
ah
also i really need to get a UPS... power has been knocked out briefly twice in the last few weeks...
surprisingly my topic forbidden setup hasn't been corrupted
@unreal orbit thats for job creation's which in my op is good
'error: context contains unicode characters above 0xffff'
Turns out GitHub build status context strings can't contain Emojis.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
@dull chasm I won't respond to that out of fear that the discussion will get too political 😉
things like that dont have too ...its just as simple as people need to work and a couple cents per gallon is worth it
i am not a political person at all but people need to support them self's regardless of skill/education
The topic by nature is political because it's a situation being created by government regulation
@scenic radish you are allowed to pump your own gas in your state?
AFAIK it's an East coast thing
there are like 2 that you can't for some...unknown reason
In the United States, gas jockeys were often tipped for their services, but this is now rare as full-service stations are uncommon except in the states New Jersey and Oregon (counties with more than 40,000 residents), the town of Weymouth, Massachusetts, and the town of Huntington, New York, where retail customers are prohibited by law from pumping their own gasoline.
oregon started it
so strange
this is a funny read: https://jalopnik.com/join-america-in-laughing-at-oregonians-freaking-out-abo-1821708958
Oh my. I can taste the entitlement
it actually came up in discussion of retial envoriments ....more retial is moving to self serve (checking your self out etc) store still charges same amout for product but pays out less in labor .... so they toke it vote and it won ....
I wish there was more self service, we have slowly adopted it in Norway the last 6+ years
In stores that is, and kiosks
the self serve kiosks are obnoxious sometimes
And even in gas stations we can buy windscreen wash and cleaning at the pump
i want a konami code to get it to STFU and run like a normal checkout
let me scan everything and then check the weights at the end
Yeah, I remember the grocery kiosk robotwe had in my hometown in... Early 2000s
i hate them ... i like real people ...but the i am very happy with the vote system ...i will go with and be happy with the way the vote goes ...that is how it should work
It was buggy as hell
they want you to do the work but they don't trust you to do the work
I prefer self checkout, less human interaction
I self checkout the weekly shopping, scan and put wares in the bag directly, then just pay and leave the store
well yall are alot younger ... i remember when you went somewhere there was somebody to help you and knew what they where talking about
heh, store employees actually knowing things 😛
only time i get that is at Home Depot (usually)
yes sir at one time
Yeah trust me, nobody knows anything in retail today
Tried buying a fuse at the gas station a few years ago
one reason i go to what the call mom and pop stores
The kid didn't even know the word fuse
lol
"why do you need a fuse for your gas tank?"
fuel pump ....duh
i'm not sure why you're looking for the filesystem in userspace in a gas station sir
(as if a gas station employee knows advanced linux concepts)
They probably do because they took a useless education
And now don't have any job offerings and work at the gas station
at least they are working ....we have alot here that dont
true
true
Yeah, I'm interested to see the evolution of the welfare state here, has been a lot of kids who just don't work and rather get money from the state
we got same thing believe me
so... crazy weather lately, huh?
🤣

have people been getting 2019 hacktoberfest shirts yet?
I got mine a few weeks ago
Same
i got my confirmation on 10/23 but no shipping yet :/
Well, that part only needs a server, the packaging needs a human 😛
Due to the volume please be patient while we fulfill your Hacktoberfest order! Transit is estimated between 3-5 weeks for delivery from the time you receive tracking. You’ll receive an email with tracking information once shipped.
wait, how do you get one?
by signing up in time and submitting a number of PRs to open source projects
oh
changes "a" to "an" in four different docs
shirt pls
pretty much, but if you piss off the maintainers of whatever project you spammed, they can ensure you don't get credit 😛
That's what their verification process supposedly detects and rejects
Lol yeah that makes sense

Hello
@trail crag does ipv6 really even matter for devices on a local network? i understand why it will eventually be needed for WAN, but why would devices on a LAN even need an ipv6 address?
i'm guessing it's because the router would need to use ipv6 addresses on the LAN if it's using ipv6 to connect to the Internet but still... couldn't there be a clever way to use ipv4 on LAN and ipv6 for WAN?
WAN WAN WAN
There is no nat in ipv6 and there is no good way to tunnel v6 over 4 for clients. Ipv4 just needs to die.
There are decent ways to do ipv6 to v4 translation but not the other way around.
Ah gotcha, makes sense.
forgot about the lack of NAT with ipv6. that's certainly nice
My HA server can be reached, externally and internally, over IPv4 or IPv6 - it's pretty neat
ipv6 is a hoax
It's a Chinese back door
ipv4 addresses are certainly easier to remember
I need to go full ipv6
But my router doesn't support it. Sigh
Plus I don't understand it so I'm not sure where I would be leaving myself vulnerable
Native IPv6 is easy until you have to talk to IPv4.
I run a native IPv6 network where the biggest pain points are NAT64 and DNS64.
Oh, and MySQL was evicted as it's permissions setup was a pain for IPv6.
On a related note, give a server a name starting with a number, and try to grant it privs in MySQL....
It will fail when you attempt to connect.
MySQL will parse it as an ip due to it starting with a number.....
This is a known "security" feature and won't be fixed!
Haven't tried. Moved to Postgres and haven't looked back.
I think number as first character breaks a lot of things
Postgresql's IP and JSON types make life easier, and I have some PostGIS fun going on as well.
@hushed basalt Fair, but justifying it as a security measure is sub optimal!
I have ipv6 enabled on my router but I don't think it's actually doing anything lol
My ISP supports it
@scenic radish By bulk, most of my traffic is IPv6 due to Netflix, Youtube and VPNs to servers.
Ah interesting
I would need to figure out how to do it at the home network leveo
Level*
In terms of allowing remote access to HA and my RP etc
@hushed basalt Instead of sending the message again, please edit the original message
Yes I know ;) old habits
Google hangouts don't let you edit
Nor facebook messenger
such bullshit
Anyone have a recommendation for a decent UPS?
I don't need anything super fancy, just enough to shut down my pi gracefully during a power outage
What country
Should be heaps
RPI is pretty light
But you probably want to put your router etc on it
I don't know American brands though
ah thx
Ipv6 is always going to be a toy. Never anything serious.
Y
Almost 30% of Google's traffic is IPv6 these days.
No more IPv4 available via normal allocation means, and Carrier Grade NAT will only carry ISPs so far. Expect to see more and more mobile carriers in particular start dabbling in IPv6
guess i'm glad i have an ipv4 address through my ISP... at least for now
A lot of ISPs already considering removing public IPv4 from residential connections. If you want a public IPv4 you can pay for the privilege by upgrading to Business!
muh duckdns
Won't work as expected if your "public" ip is an RFC1918 behind an ISP NAT!
gross
It's coming 😦 IPv4 are becoming a valuable commodity. The established ISPs will start selling off a load of subnets as they're now valuable, while most residential behind NAT. After all, most users really won't care as long as they can get their social media and streaming services. Meanwhile, new ISPs will push IPv6 hard as it's cheaper!
I have Xfinity so I'm surprised I haven't lost mine yet
We just need to get rid of all the northerners
Only ~700 million people in the southern hemisphere
😭
Yeah my ISP recently went to CGNAT but it was simple to opt out
How'd that work?
I need to get a pfsense box
Literally just called em and was like 'yo I host shit'
Any extra cost?
No extra cost, just a phone call. At least for my ISP.
huh. interesting.
I was ready to drop the cash for a static address when it happened.
hopefully comcast is as reasonable as other ISPs when they inevitably switch
I also do not understand ipv6. Can you use it for a public address and keep the internal network nice sane ipv4?
apparently there's no real way to route ipv6 to ipv4
interesting that you ask that too, because: https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/397426163649216512/649357370874658827
😄
No ipv6 to ipv4 NAT? Well that's just mad.
Yeah I'm surprised that can't be done. ipv4 addresses are easy to remember. ipv6 are... the stuff of nightmares
i thought 6 -> 4 was fine but going the other way was the problem
What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream
@young sigil would have been even better if you said MAD !
Is that some sort of TLA?
Yeah, atleast for Comware IRF it is what is used for split brain scenarios where all stacking links are down
I just call it mutually assured destruction, but it is called something else in comware
But it really does mutually assured destruction, no links come up
Snowing hard, so probably I will be stuck in queue for a few hours 😛
Come to think of it, I think I have installed some servers that calculate for met.no so I'm intertwined with the HA project, six degrees of separation and such
No more work!
Officially finished
Time logramitherically moves slower the closer you get to your finish date though
So you are now an officially unemployed hobo? @clear ferry ohhh that MAD.
@scenic radish You can get an IPv6 only network talking to IPv4, I go to FOSDEM in Brussels every year, and their wireless network is IPv6 only. DNS64 and NAT64 at the edge allows communiction to "Legacy" IPv4 endpoints 🙂
So there is hope yet!
He looks like he has sand in his jiney.
Yes officially a hobo
Some actual time to freelance, study and spend with my daughter
So basically axtbyea without the generous social welfare
Look at that length. Too long.
The original supergroup
In relation to the FOSDEM network, a couple of years ago, they made the main FOSEDM network IPv6 only and FOSDEM-Legacy as dual stack. They have lovely Grafana dashboards during the conference which should number of clients on each and what they are in terms of OS/Manufacturer.
When they went IPv6 only, the main casuality was Andoird!! Android at the time wouldn't bring up an interface if it only had an IPv6 address. Every other OS didn't really care.
@hushed basalt that is not what she said!
This was pointed out publicly on stage during the closing session, and there was lots of Google and Core Android devs in the audience.
Next Android "security" release had that fixed 😄
@hushed basalt go the TS80
I was going to go bigger. Better. Stronger. More happier
Jbc compact <3
Only four times the price but oh well
Plus TS80 wouldn't be powerful for a few of my jobs
So I'm just back where i started
Hakko has a god awful interface. Weller catches on fire and has a garbage stand
We had an awesome smd solder station at school, complete setup was $40k class I think, it even had solder sucking in the iron if memory serves right
If you can afford it and dont need the portability the JBC is out of the TS Miniware league. I have a Hakko DS whatever and agree. I just set the temp and forget.
Pretty sure I mentioned I'm in love with the Metcal stations we use at work. $$$ more still though.
I should reach out to some music contacts of mine and mention that my workbench is usable again
I miss troubleshooting amps and stuff
Don't do that musos are worse than yachties when it comes to paying for work.
Pff, usually they pay me in music equipment
Which I approve of
I talked to some guys at a local music shop they said that mostly all amp repair was done by one guy in Oslo, and he hardly ever has time
Must be an untapped market
@clear ferry Do whata friend of mine does, go to local car boot sales and their equivs. He gets old amps and effects cheap, repairs them and sells them at a nice profit.
As a hobby it is a great side business
He has gone to three days a week for actual work!
And the rest is a hobby that makes him money!
@strange vapor tried advertising for that, but people in Norway are fucking idiots, they want full retail price for a broken amp
Strangely, he won't take in other people's gear to fix at a price. He prefers to buy old stuff where there's no outside pressure to get it fixed.

I plan to do some cable assembly for easy cash
I can solder a 2 pin lemo to dtap cable and sell them for about $120 each at going rate
About $40-$50 in parts and there's no one here who does it
I had to Google both of those
Expensive film and tv connectors
I figured as much
I used an 8 pin version of that Lemo connector for a custom hand-held VHF radio to headset cable. Nice connectors. AGSO (air ground support officer) proof but fiddly.
Im thinking of buying a Nest hub and I'm wondering if its worth it and how i can integrate it with hass?
It might be snowing
@jagged mantle do you mean the Google home with screen? I love mine
But it had changed name three times atleast
it integrates with home assistant as a media player (but that's off-topic here, need to go to #330944238910963714)
I use it for music, radio and streaming my surveillance cameras when movement
i like mine, but i also got it for $47 so i'm not sure i'd pay full retail
screamin' deal on ebay
converted to us dollars from swedish kronor it's about 110$ and seems to be a good deal atleast here in sweden, right now we only have mostly lights at home so no cameras or smart doorbells apart from a 433mhz doorbell
<@&330946878646517761> spam discord link ^
Thanks @wet pilot

???
@wet pilot was it the Google play rewards one again?
Yup
Ugh
Google homes minis are like 50% off right now
Ehhh. They're only good if you need voice control somewhere, not good for music
I don't mind the music tbh
But placement makes a huge difference
The mics are wayyyyyy better than the original google home
I have 1 home and 3 home minis
Does anyone have recommendations for smart thermostats that can be controlled in Home Assistant?
I really like the idea and aesthetic of Nest Thermostats, but I hear that they aren't compatible with HA anymore.
I should buy some Google home mini now that the nest mini has arrived
Half price for the old one
#330944238910963714 @twilit flint
Real video of me implementing something in HA
But then ludeeus fixes something
ok i'll be that guy, anyone know of any great deals going on?
err i should have been more specific 😛 like switches and fun devices
i've been getting a ton of other stuffs already... tv's, robo vacs, etc... now i'm diving into this
Switches and fun devices are cheap to build yourself 😛
If you #diy-archived it you can get it looking just how you want
i'm not creative enough atm to even contemplate what i would make other than a dimmer switch or an outlet switch, which i think is already done better than i can do 😛
maybe some buttons would be fun/cool
or motion sensors
@steel urchin the ATX in @clear ferry has to do with the mobo standard not Austin 😛
Any surface laptop users here
I got a surface pro if that’s close enough
NO

what are some good WAF systems for interfaces? I've been seeing lovelace for desktop browser, and i see some apps (ie, Ariela) that claim support for lovelace (although I don't understand what that truly means yet except maybe reading panel configs, but it certainly isn't the same UI right? wouldn't lovelace have css for mobile built-in for mobile?)
Anyway, just looking for something i can throw on a tablet for quick, clean, sexy ui access
WAF = "wife acceptance factor"
yeah i have a few fun ideas i am going to try for automation, and i'm on the hunt for good cheap physical switches for lighting/dimming... i'm not sure what the correct term is yet, but i'm hoping to find a remote or button wall plate (ie, looks like a switch but battery operated) that can also assist.
But then I want a nice UI for overview, and per-room control, along with a global scene control for most commonly used scenes
i'll keep looking, but always looking to hear "stay away from <xyz>!"
i've got about $500 worth of crap in a cart atm 🤣 so i'm trying to make decent decisions on a short time schedule
Xiaomi buttons are great
Both the small ones and the ones that look like regular switches
am i dumb trying to stick 100% to a single protocol?
oh hmm... they're BT? that's not horrible
i'm just mostly trying to stay away from the wifi systems i think
No, ZigBee
I use ZigBee, WiFi, 433 mostly, retired most of my zwave stuff for now
Might introduce some Bluetooth soon
oh i was looking at this: https://us.gearbest.com/smart-light-bulb/pp_257679.html
says smart bluetooth switch
huh, so the image and description says bluetooth, but the comments say zigbee 😒

so ok, hmm.... i need to research zigbee, i've only looked at z-wave and instantly liked a lot about it
I use a few of this, there is also a wired one
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/NZp3XFzO
hmmm so it appears zigbee networking is more advanced
Not really, but if you have questions we can head over to #zigbee-archived
I do need a good dashboard for ha
Something that has limited access
Permanently on, etc
@clear ferry more the interface
I have an ipad 2 not doing much
Hadashboard?
I don't want raw homeassistant as there's no user restrictions
So I got my Oculus Rift and turns out my motherboard's USB3 is not compatible with it...
and I can't find a pci-e USB3 anywhere. Called all the local stores but none of them have those 😦
nope, the mobo is from 2011 🙂
You could solder one on :D
...and my laptop doesn't have displayport
Can't you just adapter USB-C to USB3 ?
Which way
?
?
?
?
@hushed basalt I have a surface laptop
C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER

?

@stable terrace laptop 2?
I'm looking at the laptop 3 15"... For business
Such a stupid name
No, original. Love it though
Any good black Friday deals for Home Assistant compatible devices (lights, switches, etc.)?
I'd like to know as well
I only would know locally for Germany
But it's probably not a bad idea to checkout the known china sellers like Gearbest and Banggood
I see $5 amazon smart plug but I don't think it works wit HA
Check for the protocol. And as said, China Shops most likely
wyze cam came out with a black version, hmm
@hushed basalt Surface Laptop 1st gen user here
for anyone with zwave and/or wifi switches. which do you prefer?
i had planned on getting the zwave+ leviton light switches, but their wifi equivlant is 42% off right now so now im like 🤔
i have wifi, z-wave and zigbee 🙂
I have sonoff wifi for builtin switches, and I use xiaomi zigbee that is just glued to the wall
I like that rclone uses my memory instead of disk for temporary storage @boreal pewter 🤣
currently using 30G RAM for copying to the cloud
😄
Ah, the joys of the ESTA
Atleast they don't ask about my sexual shanannigans like the blood donor paper does.... Trying to not look suspicious
dont ask dont tell is in effect again
@plucky pollen did you ping me on the forums?
I did
Any way to get an area created?
we have been using a thread like an area for quite a bit for ZHA
yep
just discovered this project this morning and spent half my day reading about it, looks really cool!
I'm about to become obsessed and ruin my life aren't I
that depends... are u married?
yeah and she's into the plex and sonos stuff
not really into the "I want automatic curtains and the skylights" thing
only way to tell is for me to pick up another Pi tomorrow haha
you might be okay. my wife rolled her eyes when i dimmed the lights when we started a movie with the kodi box, but then bragged about to our friends
I need to read about light switches, we agonized over which wallswitches to get and now it sounds like I might want to replace them?
i just dropped $500 on switches today actually
I'm sensitive to flickering and wanted to ensure the led backlights in our wall switches were subtle enough and didnt have that 50hz flicker etc
put her through hell ensuring the colours were bang on haha, this is gonna be great
just a FYI. the guys here are awesome. just dont expect an immediate answer. also it is important you use the channels properly. hassio questions go to the hassio channel, zwave etc...
copy that, thanks for the heads up
yup. welcome to one more time vampire hobby
gets worse if you want to start developing for it
"I spent 500 hours so I don't have to open the curtains with my hands" <-- me hopefully
heh
curtain stuff can be tricky. not a lot of commercially available products for it yet
tons of people have worked it out in #diy-archived though
there's a ton you can do once you have a hub and can execute your own code/rules I am guessing
hygrometer etc in subfloors
you can do a lot with an esp these days
'esp'?
...it has begun
I was thinking pi, get hygrometers for wine cellar and some power point switchy things for lamps... see how I go
ahh this is like an arduino but geared to automation?
a pi can do it, just a bit overkill
pretty much
#551843558676758569 has their own server if you wanna explore
I'll have a read.. whats a rough layout like. A pi hub, with arduino devices and other commercial devices hanging off it over wifi?
Haii
I have an old slim Dell desktop that I am thinking about scrapping - would I be able to use it as a HA server? It has Linux Mint already on it but I'm not seeing a lot of documentation on the HA website
could throw docker on it and do it that way
@covert gale absolutely
I'd nuke the linux mint though and put bare metal Ubuntu server on it
distro war. 🥊
lol
Debian ftw
anyone seen any good black friday deals?
looking for bulbs,switches and plug?
I am from the UK
Yeah ubuntu is a good middle ground
And it's common as hell which is incredibly important for novices
decent docs too
Commonality wins over "best" in most cases
the distro with the best overall docs is arch, but that's a whole different beast
i've tried most of them
don't tell @clear ferry you like ubuntu
i've used gentoo but never spun it up myself
Easiest distro to go from zero to having docker up and running is the best
Some distros take an hour to figure out how to even download their isos
eh, prolly. decently easy in fedora (though there's a bug right now)
Then commonality to avoid weird edge cases
Nothing worse than trying to make application A talk to application B while on distro X version Y
And you can't find anyone else who solved it and posted the solution
Even worse is someone has the exact same problem, then posts "nevermind I figured it out" with absolutely no explanation
And gentoo is bae
Anyone have experience with the abode iota? Thinking of finally ditching my nest secure so my alarm system can play nice with HA
I have their gen 1 system. It's reliable. The app is terrible though but I hardly ever use it so I don't care
No fee to self-monitor which is nice

yup my bad ^^
Hi all
looking for a mini-PC to build a proxmox machine on it in order to run Hass.io plus other stuff on it
NUC, old laptop, take your pick
yeah @Anon: wanted to ask about deskmini
Oh, and ... this has been asked about 18 billion times - worth searching 😉
exactly 🙂
Ryzen 5 3400g, some 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz CL16 RAM, some NVMe SSDs and thats it
@Anon I read you can't have video HW acceleration with Ryzen and Proxmox
is that correct?
is NVMe really worth thinking about?
I was going exactly on Deskmini A300 but then read it and....now thinking about A310 (apparently you can have HW acceleration on Intel GPU)
My PC's here have each 2 NVMe and my Deskmini has one
They aint expensive either actually
to me NVMe are no brainer...not expansive and damn fast
There's also the coral USB accelerator to consider, if you're thinking hardware video analysis
@clever mortar I already have and using it 🙂
a Ryzen is completely an overkill for Hass.IO: I would like to use also for other stuff
hence the HW acceleration
currently I am running proxmox + Hass.IO on a N4100 with 4Gb ram...CPU is @ 7% but I can't do more than this with 4Gb ram
hence...the upgrade
I also heard about AMD-NUC rumors...
Yeah but no NUC
is there a reason why you say "no NUC"?
NUC 4lyfe
which OS are you running?
Debian
Modularity can be useful, but more often than not it turns out to be as useful as "future proof"
oh no, don't make atxbyea show his
Nah about 30 Docker Container by now. Plex server serving my unlimited cloud, Unifi Controller and Monitoring
But yeah my load is still less than 0.5
Adguard Unbound for Network
He has a small data centre for his 😉
ahahah
Ah, proper geek cave
I guess all this is to improve your guitar skills? 🙂
what is the power consumption of that beast??
Not too bad as it is usually powered as needed
I power up an down for labs and workshops
I see
considering I do everything on N4100 with 4Gb of Ram...10watt in total I am surprised you still speak with me 😄
The blade enclosure was my main rig with 24/7 power, but I have moved over to the mini itx and the r510 for now
Even worse: There are Pi users here
I'm sure the noise only slightly less annoying than atxbyea's guitar playing
i was a PI user 😄
Nagging my boss for a new DL380 Gen10 now then
Then you should see the 900 core 64TB servers I install
My main home server is a Xeon... what is this low end i5 stuff 😛
well where I work I use a 10k core cluster but at home....???
i just use torrent/watch movies/HA
10k core only? I installed a 8k core one in 2007 😛
ahah
Torrent + Streaming is already heavy workload
ahah really?
Minecraft Server
🤢
I have a PI with Kodi, a firestick
synology nas
a mini PC for Hass.IO with proxmox
that's all
I run HA, Kodi and some other stuff on a Nuc and it works fine for me
Xeon, i7, i5, and a growing number of Pis
BUT I would like to have a bit more room in case I want to run Plex
ahah i do not use plex
not enough CPU/Ram 💩
Anyway Transcoding will be done by any server actually
And I just guess the FireTV will need that, it is just too cheap
it is in fact I use Kodi and FireTV only for netflix and amazon prima
I think if I stay too much in this chat I will end up buying a 24 core xeon or similar 🙂
Only atxbyea is still firmly in the intel camp. AMD is where it's at, amirite?
🤢
Itanium has a good price performance level these days
Just go PA-RISC while you are at it
😄
why no one mentioned PCIe 4.0 SSD?
honestly this is something I would like to have....maybe on AMD NUC?
Hello all
No NUC
I feel ashamed with my sata ssd 😐
Yeah I have to run a SATA SSD also
Sata SSD's are fine for the rest of the games which have no heavy workload
I want to upgrade mobo later to do M.2 NVME instead of SATA
But my SSD is plenty fast for my needs. I only do gaming occasionally and it performs well enough for me.
As long as you BF5 on WQHD and Ultra with 120+ FPS it's ok
I have been spending all of my time learning HA and Lovelace this week... so no gaming
gaming shouldn't be too reliant on SSD anyway (that's what ram is for). Also playing battlefield, smh...
^ Plenty of ram in my system lol
64GB are totally enough nowadays
hides with 16GB
I have 64gb also, but it rarely gets used even with multiple VMs open.
@clear ferry is your boy if you have at least 1TB+. But he also serves you with DDR1
Probably https://downloadmoreram.com/
Yup
@slim plume a plethora of servers have that these days
Something as small as a BL460c can hold 1.5TB
Even in Gen8 if memory serves right
😛
The Gen10 holds 2TB actually
But the old Superdome 9000 from the early 2000s could hold 1TB and 192 PCI-X cards
Cool. I haven't been around servers lately.. since I had a Dell PowerEdge in my garage as a teenager
We have some IoT and NAS at work but nothing with ram like that, basically a tower server with some decent specs can run the whole plant.
@clear ferry @clever mortar
@gdriveusers
Nice
Hey guys need some advice!
I need to sync some stuff between OneDrive and gdrive
I’ve got a Nest E Thermostat AND Tado v3+ with wireless kit and 4 TRV valves. Trying to figure out which to use
Not Nest 😉
No?
Do you want to integrate it with HA?
Eventually
Only one of those can be
I know google shut down the api
And it's not Nest 😉
Question is regardless of HA, which is best
Which do you use
I liked the EcoBee 4.
Integrated well with Hassio, and the room sensors showed up individually, with temp and motion.
I bought all of this for £310
Which is why I’m considering using it
All brand new and sealed
Our home came with the Honeywell YTH8320ZW1007/U, no complaints here, haven't even touched it once
but it doesn't have learning like the nest does
yeah, nest devices that require the API are just useless for any integrations now
#diy-archived would be where to ask that @static prawn
Hmm do I need any more google home minis
I already have four... But they're half price
need... want...
helloo
When I have a house I'll probably have use for more
i have installed hassOs on my virtualmachine. When i restart it it stucks
i see starting eudev-3.2.8
when i go to hassio.local:8123
i see nothing
someone that can help me on skype
??
Not the right channel for it. #330990055533576204 will help if that's the way you went with. And try to explain what you did and what the problem was.
Hey me again
Gonna paste, please note I’m not too bothered about intergrating with HA right at this moment.
So I’ve been eying up the Tado system for a while and finally bought it once it’ll Black Friday deals dropped! I managed to buy Tado V3+ starter kit with wireless extension kit & the quad TRV pack for £270! Bargain!
However... I found a deal this morning I couldn’t pass up on. Nest WiFi kit (router and point), Nest Hub Max, Nest Thermostat E + Heat Link & a Nest Mini for £310. Yes... £310...
To clarify I just got into the Nest/Google Home Smarthome after years of being with Amazon.
I’ve already got 3 Nest Hubs, so the Nest Hub Max will go nicely in my kitchen!
This is where I’m questioning if I should go with the Nest E over Tado. How much of a difference does the TRVs make? I wouldn’t be surprised if Google release some TRVs in 2020. I quite like the look of the Nest E over the Tado! Also not having a subscription for geofencing like Tado has would be nice.
Would love some feedback!
hoping some switches drop price for cyber monday
Anyone have an Android TV? Just got a new tv, and it seems every app has it's own picture settings, but there is an option in the picture settings to apply to "all sources", but it doesn't work as expected. As I change apps, I can visually see the backlight change values. It's neat that you CAN have different video settings per app, but annoying to be forced to tweak for every app.
I have one but have not noticed that behavior
But then I have a Nvidia shield, not a TV with it built in
yeah i'm uncertain where the issue lies.. it is an android menu, but clearly it's just a driver integration to control the panel
It's possible the picture settings are set
But the backlight is automatically adjusting based on the different content on the different apps
More black or white ratio etc
no it's definitely going back to the defaults on new apps
once i change them for the app, it's persistent for that app
even if i say apply to all sources
i can set backlight to lowest on one app, and highest on another app, and put all other values to extremes, and see it change as i switch apps back and forth
and verified in the picture settings once the app is up
just odd

My Pro is in the livingroom and I want a second for bedroom 😛
hey, anyone knows what is this error window in thunderbird: https://imgur.com/a/qB6ou7a ? Can not get rid off, and going mad, deleted few times,...
It remembers me at code the frontend was not able to interpret because deps are missing 😄
Could be some debug setting tho
Like developer tools in browser
wont get off, tried so much
Well then lets hope it "surfs" you
Not quite as sleek but I got a Dell G7 17 Laptop i7-9750H 16GB 256GB for $1500 AUD
wekeeend!.. Oh deam its sunday 🙈
Now they got you.. on 5.1
You can see yourself out
Have you seen Project Alias? https://github.com/bjoernkarmann/project_alias
I have seen that. Very interesting
Just installed hassio on ubuntu and got it working with my Toon. Whoop whoop!
keep the change you filthy animal
Fun fact: That movie scene was specifically made for Home Alone. It's not from an actual movie.
Nice, the outdoor Christmas lights I ordered were good quality
I'll need to order a few hundred more for next year
And a good power supply
Few hundred more 🤔
I can't really say anything, I'm debating whether to go for 60 LED/m or 144 LED/m for some outdoor LED strips, rather than "only" 30/m
Yeah, there is fifty on each
I need atleast 400 to cover the front rain drains 😛
But for5£ per 50led it's not a bad deal
For fully controllable
When considering the 60/144/30 options make sure you consider not only the power but current too. Those strips are flimsy and can only carry so much and multi-point power injection is a PITA. 12V or 24V for the denser ones makes sense.
Power injectionis no problem for the outdoor lights for me
Since I will conceal the cable under the gutters
lol what is a 20GB share plan?
but you're getting more! yeah, that was in the news a while ago, mainly just a price increase without advertising it as such
🤷
Flexible, cost-effective shared data plans for people who mainly talk, text, & surf the Web. Choose the data plan that's right for you at AT&T.
if that's the confusing part
man i have saved a shit ton of money this black friday
so far $8k off retail, which is about 50% off
I saved zero since I didn't buy anything 😛
Yeah if you have everything you need it is just looking at things and realizing it has no real use 😛
I bought a new Kindle, to replace my 7 year old Paperwhite
Which was, quite literally, falling apart
I need to call Amazon
Because my kindle is registered to an email I no longer have
So I literally have to call them
I'm a nightmare to buy Christmas presents to since I've had my own income since I was nine, so I have always bought what I wanted when I felt like it 😂 so black Friday is usually nothing interesting, especially since the offers in Norway are pathetic
well we are buying everything new this year... couches, beds, tv's, cars, laptops, rugs, clothes, etc.... it's been needed for a while, and with the move we decided it'd be easier than moving stuff THEN trying to upgrade
So you saved 8k on about a 100+k ?
So you only got half your list done 😄
oh my list is just beginning lol
lol i've literally spent over 650k in the last 3 weeks
and it's nowhere near done
of course most of that is the home itself
but no loan this time, so it was a big yikes
My house has doubled in value since I bought it, so I'm considering selling and moving too
and here I havent found anything interesting this BF 😦
depending on where you live, that can be very fruitful
Yeah, I bought it for $230k and I could probably sell for $450 now
moving 15 minutes from our house and the cost drops 80% 🤣 screw these property taxes!
And I only have $130k left in loans
that could be a pretty good move if you're in a good place
keeping in mind closing costs are a bitch 😛
I might be changing roles in a few years though, so then I might move North and travel internationally instead, then I can pay 1/4 for a bigger house
We can sell without help, so zero closing cost
i did the travel thing for a bit.. it was cool, but i missed the wife and pups too much and had to give it up
Yeah, it would probably be 85% home and 15% travel
well you'd likely need to get a lawyer to draft up everything and c.y.a., that can cost about 3-4% of the sale
don't wanna sell and then someone comes and sues you for a lightbulb burning out
ah, different culture... in the US you gotta protect yourself because people love to try to screw everyone else over :S
And we usually don't sue eachother outside the us 😛
yeah lol
lol don't get me started please, it's hard enough living here as an open-minded individual
and we dont want to see lawyers getting to rich on our bills
yussss, just scored some optiplex 9020's with i7's
for dirt cheap!
$300 for 2 of them lol
the processor is worth almost that alone!
@clear ferry we have stamp duty on houses here
On purchases
About $20-25k for a $500k house. Down the drain

wouldn't be so much an issue without the extreme commodification of housing
I think we paid 12k or so on our 460k house but I could be misremebering
Do you remember that one of the reasons for introducing the GST was to get rid of transfer taxes such as stamp duty 😂
replacing the previous federal wholesale sales tax system and designed to phase out a number of various State and Territory Government taxes, duties and levies such as banking taxes and stamp duty.
We have quarterly rates if you own property, many people would pay around that
Plus land tax in a lot of jurisdictions if you also rent the property out. That’s also supposed to reduce stamp duty!
Ha
Like how we tell our wives we buy smart home gear so we can automate our lives for more free time
Six hours of debugging a week later...
Rofl
Eh I got nothing against land tax
Jack that shit up until it’s not viable to be a landlord
Yeah, we have land and house tax paid quarterly
But that includes water, trash and other stuff the state does
Council fees really
Rates go to the council
Stamp duty to the state
Everything else to the feds
I guess its muddied here since we have no council, the ACT gov does territory and traditionally council duties
hah we're still talkin about taxes... shakes fist
Unless you're rich
Then taxes are just something that you pay your accountant to make go away
damn, no drops on prices for stuff i was watching.. was hoping switches would go on sale for cyber monday
anyone have any input on honeywell vs ge enbrighten zwave dimmer switches?
Apparently the plugs I used to fix the garage lighting 3 years ago weren't good enough
My name is badtelcotech and I have a sensor addiction.
Xiaomi?
No, that is a 433 sensor
Hey guys. Anyone have a Line Voltage heating system they use with HA? I just bought a new house that has 7+ thermostats with electric ceiling cable heat and I'm looking for options on centrally controlling them all. The only one I found so far is the Mysa.
It's actually not too shabby. The house is super effecient, which it probably needs to be for this kind of heat. I'm more used to forced air induction than electric heat, so it's been an adjustment.
I will definitely miss my central air from my last house, though, haha
Doing some math on the cost for 7 of these: https://shop-us.getmysa.com/products/mysa-baseboard
I could probably do with only 6. They claim 26% savings. Even if I could hit 20%, that's about $15/wk, which I would see my return of investment within a year.
I don't see how they can give you any savings at all
electric heater is just that, electric, very constant usage per heat produced
only savings can be done via logic to turn off heat when you don't need heat
so the 20% savings is saying, your lazy and need me
now a heatpump based water heater, that is, if you don't live somewhere that is cold most of the time, or if you have a tempature stable basement to put it in
Norway is probably 70-80% heat pumps, because we have well isolated houses that require extra heating in winter (up to -40c) and cooling in summer (up to 35c)
but there used to be a lot of different solutions in the past, electric heating is phased more and more out
and oil has been dead for 15 years
ya, here in the usa, atleast northeast, it was all oil/gas heat to boilers (or coal if people still had that)
but if they where cheap, it was electric instead
hard to use a heatpump if your avg temps are at or under -10c
no not really, just get a proper heatpump
we heat with heatpump only from +15 to -20
it is, you would get more heat from electric heaters
then we start supplementing with wood at -20
I used to design and build gas/oil/electric/heatpump systems at my last job
2 or 3 stage heating
normally at -10c heatpumps are close to 0 output, at about 5-10c we switch from heatpump to gas/oil due to cost savings tradeoff
we have no issues heating here
my 15 year old one struggles at lower temps though, but new one is fine
heat roughly 100m2 with that single pump to 22-23 when it is -20 outside
you sure that is purely, and not with the electric backup heaters it kicks in
there is no electric heating in mine as far as I know
odd, would be a european thing then
atleast here in the usa, they almost always have electric backup heat
never heard of
due to defrost cycle and if it gets too cold for the heatpump alone
use a 2heat thermostat (emerganc heat mode)
here when a unit kicks into defrost it powers the w wire, for the electric backup heat
so it's not blowing cold A/C air inside the house
and the thermostat if the temp drops 2c lower than setpoint, it also turns on the w wire for electric heat
where 1c below setpoint turns on the heatpump alone
@tender plaza, I don’t agree with the “you’re lazy” argument. Imagine needing to manually adjust 7 thermostats in your house every single time you leave for work, then manually adjusting them again when you come home, ever single day.
no idea, the current one I have is a Samsung Smart Home Exclusive 12
@tame swallow oh, I didn't say it was simple
but at that level, I wouldn't be adjusting all of them anyways, just the room I was in
currently I only adjust the bedroom, and very rarely any others
Having thermostats that put more control over the house could easily make for a huge improvement in savings, especially with having kids.
if you work outside the house, and have dynamic schedules yes
work at home, heh, alot more iffy
Yeah I’m not at home most of the day, so I could easily drop the temp in the house down. An all electric heated house makes for an expensive electric bill, lol
I do a variety of them, some weeks it's 90% home and 10% out, some weeks it is 90% out and 10% home
🤣
my issue has always been the wife
she refuses to adjust it
all the smart things are being designed to turn stuff off as she leaves
no need for the a/c to be running at 68f when she isn't here
I should do some automations with the upstairs AC
now, she does bitch and turns off all lights though, and tells the kids they are burning electricity with their light
but the wife studies from home, so she is usually upstairs if I'm not there
the lights that if left on all month is <$2
Exactly my issue, wife and 2 kids that leave the whole house on. Setup presence detection and let the house shut itself off when it doesn't see anyone at home.
my upstairs I just leave off, perm
I'll automate the upstairs, just so someone doesn't leave it on, but it's the guest suite
I wish there were more options for line voltage thermostats, though. The Mysa looks nice, but being the only player in the market makes me nervous.
The only other one I found that compares is the Maestro: https://www.stelpro.com/en-US/maestro
Orchestrate your comfort Maestro, our most advanced smart thermostat to date, is designed to give you full control over your comfort. Thanks to its features and user-friendly mobile interface, you can now manage and personalize your home's heating easily and save on your elec...
for an all in one solution
half the time here, it's a linevoltage relay, and controlled by hmm, been a long time
I have a 2nd Gen Nest Thermostat that I found ways to hook it up with a relay, but I'd rather have something built for 120V natively.
