I don't have to give any notice

Australian labour laws are pretty non existant without a union established industrial award

scenic radish

and better is the competions rules for american companies, had a collegue go to a competing company, that meant our company had to pay him for 6 months and let him go the same day, and that company had to pay him for 6 months and he couldn't work there for 6 months because of competative information

clear ferry

yeah, I have had 5 sickdays in the last 12 years

but I have flexible hours, I work when I have something to do

#

and work a lot ooh

wet pilot
#

i have "unlimited time off" subject to management approval

#

took about 80h so far this year

#

but i also work from home so i don't take as much sick time

clear ferry
#

yeah, I took 180 hours off last year

scenic radish
#

we have unlimited sick days, but not unlimited PTO

clear ferry
#

I tend to do 50% of my hours as compensation time off, the rest is full paid

scenic radish

of course, if you abuse the "unlimited" sick days it would be obvious

#

Hello all, I just purchased my first home and am fairly new to the home automation scene. The home came with A nest doorbell, thermostat and smoke/CO detector as well as a rachio sprinkler system. I just ordered my first raspberry pi and I want to know whether homebridge or Home Assistant would be the better route for me. I don't mind troubleshooting (I'm a software engineer by trade), but I do want to make this as seamless as possible. I also have a wife who is somewhat reluctantly supportive of my smart home endeavors, so I prefer a system that would cause the least amount of friction in terms of reliability. I realize this is a biased crowed being the HA discord, but nonetheless I would like to hear your thoughts. My main goal is to be able to control everything with siri and the home app.

wet pilot
#

nest currently isn't supported due to google breaking the api

#

ranchio is though

#

i'm not sure if google also broke the homekit integration

rustic lily
#

Yikes... That's really good to know. So sounds like a no go for either currently?

wet pilot
#

home assistant integrates with homekit, so you would potentially have better compatibility in general if you bring that in

#

say if you want to pick up hue or zwave or esp based things in the future

#

assuming you're married to ios

#

if you are open to using google assistant, i think that supports everything directly. ha could be used to do more complex automation

#

HA could also be used to expose local only smart devices to GA/Alexa/Homekit

#

probably not very helpful, but that's all i got

rustic lily
#

It was very informative. Thank you. I'm currently pretty sold into the homekit/ios ecosystem, but I think I need to do some more research for the sake of the benefits of being platform agnostic. Buying into zwave etc. sounds like a good a idea... I've heard some great things.

wet pilot
#

HA can be used to bridge the gap between zwave and homekit

#

i use it to connect up to google assistant and the wife is pretty happy with it so far

#

we're full android here though

#

HA lets you go further than that though. You can set up fairly complex automation so that things happen automagically

rustic lily
#

Right, right. Really bummed about that Google thing though... Not willing to shell out more money to replace all the nest products that came with the house. Google home doesn't sound like a bad idea though. My buddy who's a google engineer showed me how easy it was to throw up his baby cam on his chromecast equipped TV. I was in awe.

wet pilot
#

if you go with chromecasts, HA can tap in to those too to replicate that behavior with any camera that supports streaming

rustic lily
#

That's awesome. Well.. Sounds like I left with more questions that answers. But at least I do feel pointed in the right direction. Thank you and goodnight phnx!

wet pilot
#

haha welcome to the deep end. Good night and good luck!

hushed basalt

So while looking at the FTTP plans I discovered getting it with a phoneline is very expenive becuse Line Rental is expensive, but i have found out that a lot of home voip providers are cheap, But reviews of them are far and few between. @clever mortar they looks quite good, and Luckaly have number porting

My family would need to keep our current number as it is listed in out churches phone book and a lot of the older members of the church call it so it would be peferable to keep it

Also means that when you're away, you can have your mobile manage the number too

yeah

thats the main reason i want it, The ISP(Zen) i want to move to also provides a fritz box that will also enable us to continue using our dect phone with a voip provider

I think I can use mireds instead of kelvin as that appears in the light attributes

Yeah I can. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mired Just making a conversion spreadsheet for my temps now.

Contracted from the term micro reciprocal degree, the mired is a unit of measurement used to express color temperature. It is given by the formula:

I could probably check smart status in pfsense ThonkEyes

#

Should do that

A smart error, should be smart enough to fix itself

@hushed basalt anything will do

I ran it on a dual pentium pro back in the day

#

I grabbed it from a local hospital, the sticker said the hostname was Viagra

clever mortar
#

When I last ran it, it wasn't even dual core

#

I think I eventually upgraded it to a Pentium, from a 486...

clear ferry

I ran it on a amd486 for a period

clever mortar

It's very low resource requirement, can't imagine it changed that much over the years

I actually installed the CPU the wrong way, and it said zzzzz and I flipped it back and it worked

๐Ÿ˜› okay - reason I asked for it here is because I don't have specific technical questions , it was more of a "do you like it or not" - "does it do your job or not" kinda thing!

Aes-ni requirement changes things though

My current router is like a $15-$30 7 year old asus with tomato flashed on it

Holds up surprisingly well. But obviously any sort of DPI and advanced traffic management is out of the question

#

If the Dell 9020/7020 had either a second NIC or a pcie slot it would have been perfect

#

It's quite a jump to the SFF in terms of size

clear ferry

well, my opensuse tumbleweed upgrade went smooth, but my br0 adapter vanished ๐Ÿคฃ

I have had multiple openvpn site to site vpns with a lot of traffic, and road warrior configs too, never had any need for aes-ni and I'm pretty confident you won't miss it either @hushed basalt ๐Ÿคท

Anyone know of any 433mhz PIR sensors that send a low battery warning or a battery status?

clear ferry

Never heard of, that said I've heard of ZigBee users reporting multiple years battery life, I have almost a year on my office motion sensor already

uugh. A voltage sensor and a status message every hour would be nice.

why would you want to know the battery level every hour?

I'm not entirely sure what's your project, but I heavily recommend the $6 Wyze Motion Sensors. They are dirt cheap, work directly with hass, and use RF (so VERY long battery life)

anyone play with heat index for their inside temperatures ?

wet pilot
#

the venerable @last plaza gave him a jinja2 macro to calc it based on a temp and humidity input

storm summit
#

yea? do you know if they got any use out of it? I feel like I tried it once and it was a bust.

wet pilot
#

seems to do what he wanted

storm summit
#
        HI = (
            c1
            + c2 * T
            + c3 * R
            + c4 * T * R
            + c5 * T * T
            + c6 * R * R
            + c7 * T * T * R
            + c8 * T * R * R
            + c9 * T * T * R * R
        )
wet pilot
#

i think i'm confusing things though

storm summit
#

that what I got off wikipedia. gives me bizzare results.

wet pilot
#

huh

#

i think he was doing a different formula

storm summit
#

to calculate heat index

#

oh...

#
        c1 = -43.379
        c2 = 2.04901523
        c3 = 10.14333127
        c4 = -0.22475541
        c5 = -6.83783e-3  # -6.83783*10^-3
        c6 = -5.481717e-2
        c7 = 1.22874e-3
        c8 = 8.5282e-4
        c9 = -1.99e-6
#

@wet pilot do you notice temps feel different in winter / summer?

#

like 67 in the summer is warmer than 67 in the winter.

wet pilot
#

humidity can definitely play in to that

storm summit

its freakin annoying.

#

Maybe I need a better quality humidity sensor in my house. I have cheapo xiaomi
