WAF will soon be at play
my fiancee does like my home assistant/smart home setup though
she drew the line at smart blinds though lmao
"that's too much"
you're too much andy. you're too much
My wife also is skeptical about me wanting to do the curtains
until our room in Vegas had them
lol
maybe she just doesn't want to see me crying if i can't get the smart blinds to work
there was a lot of frustration/almost tears when i couldn't get ESPhome to flash a smart plug with the hassio addon. then i learned there's a bug with the addon.
i ended up just using the command line tool anyway
@light trout love it
i wasted hours yesterday on a corrupt memory card then a gpio jumper pin that was broken
ESPHome has too much under the hood magic for my liking. I flash tasmota because it's more my speed
most of the time i'm not even mad when i can't get something with home assistant to work, i'm just sad
yeah i might have to look into tasmota
i do like that esphome devices are discovered automatically though
You can turn on discovery for tasmota devices too. I don't like discovery in any aspect though
oh interesting
I prefer to know exactly how and why something works. Discovery has too much behind the scenes goings on
Especially when things go wrong...
@unreal orbit recommend looking at espixelstick for lighting if you haven't already
I love it, and need to start looking at programming lights soon
With xlights that is
what would you recommend for me
i feel left out
you're gonna make me cry like esphome
I'm probably going to go with an ethernet-based solution when I get around to it. I'm done with wifi problems.
Just finished getting my garage door hardwired into my network. That was a pretty major step forward in my setup
Wireless is fine until it isn't
You are just broken down because you live in a wireless purgatory
@clear ferry Mediterranean food is my favorite, does that count
Almost
Might as well use wifi if you're using zigbee
Depends on the router too, right? Not sure how many devices proper ones can handle but the modem/router that I got from the ISP started committing seppuku after a dozen connected wifi devices
That can be a factor. In my case it's just the 2.4ghz band in my neighborhood that's boned
Yeah, it's a bummer. I've minimized the issue quite a bit. I only get one or two disconnects a day out of all my switches now.
i just like how much cheaper zigbee stuff is than z-wave lol
You get what you pay for 🤷
ehh the smartthings hardware seems nice
I could count the number of times I've had issues with my zwave devices on one hand
yeah i guess we'll see how my sensors are. a little bummed that the changes to ZHA made it seemingly impossible to tap into when a sensor becomes unavailable though...
i had an automation based on that
I've only had problems with my xiaomi stuff (zigbee) once and that was when there was a communication issue between my router and their hub. Something to do with multicast. The sensors/buttons themselves have been rock solid for me
problem solved
roses are red, violets are blue
you hate yaml; it hates you too
Yaml is life
Now I have a 4K tv
Does that mean I have to download everything in 4K too
things will get up-scaled some
if you do go download, use h265 otherwise the storage cost will make you cry
I was being sarcastic :p
Can't you hear it! :D
I work in film and television
Some of our camera codecs are in the 4 digit mbit/s range!
lol
3424x2202 12-bit RAW 2262 Mbps

Holy hell batman
Like when I tell friends I work with 64TB memory servers
They cry in desktop
I think it's about 1 TB/hr
For 25 fps
You could just be like Dell
When their new website doesn't work, just throw more hardware at it!
And when it still doesn't work, hire a consultant!
rofl
Yeah it's must quicker to get around in than ATV
I haven't pushed the codecs yet though
thats where I would possibly be concerned
Only watched one show last night
but I have no real idea of those TVs
But I think LG has quite good support with Plex
Plus I can stream spotify to it, as well as netflix, youtube etc control from my phone
ah yeah nice
And it's controllable from homeassistant, which I haven't set up yet
i want a tv that has the best panel without any smart shit
I thought that too
they're all bad and should feel bad
But it's nice when it works
sammy sucks at software
Yarp
The LG is better than my ATV interface wise though
If I pick up the remote and point towards the bottom of the screen it brings up tabs for netflix, plex, etc
So I can jump straight from app to app with one true click
It also has an IR blaster in the TV
So it controls my soundbar
It would work over HDMI too if I was using ARC but I'm using toslink
toslink is fine until you need over 6ch
Yeah I'm just a soundbar user =3
I have to use toslink for my wife's hearint aid tx anyways
ARC would be nice but every TV can't put out sound over ARC and something else at the same time :(
is it possible to flash a broadlink with a new firmware with this? https://github.com/mdhiggins/ESP8266-HTTP-IR-Blaster and https://github.com/crankyoldgit/IRremoteESP8266. i'd love to try if it is.
I would just use smartIR
No flashing required
Haven't we already had this conversation ;)
yeah, we did. but i just feel insecure of using foreign's cloud server after reading some forums. maybe i could control it using MQTT like Tasmota or using my own server?
i know it's possible to control it using MQTT but i'm just looking at other options first.
There's no need to allow data to be sent to foreign cloud servers. Broadlink IR works fine with HA if disconnected from internet (Linux based kernel routers can block devices in Forward chain to keep them on lan access only; in some Asus routers this can be accessed through GUI)
Yeah just block it in your router
Problem solvered
When you have been around the block a few times like @clear ferry you'll learn that time is valuable
I wouldn't spend a weekend trying to get "smart IR" working when there's already an easy, secure, open source method available.
And spend your time learning hard things that will help you acheive your own goals instead
Are you calling me a prostitute?
You are confusing me with someone who is over the age of 24!
been around the block
A person who has learned from relevant experiences in the world
- Street smarts
- wisdom
- real-world experience
- seen a thing or two
But yes, firewall rules are everything your need
If you're not 19 you're 90
Go to a primary school and ask them if you're old
People called me old already when I was in primary school 😂
thanks! i didn't know that is possible. will this method works for other device as well (other than broadlink)?
It depends if the device is enabled to have local controls (for instance Google Chromecast/Home/Nest won't function as they require cloud connection)
But devices like Philips Hue Bridge, Xiaomi Yeelight, Xiaomi Gateway (although I would recommend completely replacing Xiaomi Gateway with zigbee2mqtt or deCONZ) work in HA without internet access
@midnight adder i see. that would help me decide what to get in the future then. thank you to you and @hushed basalt
@clear ferry yeah, didn't thought of that. will keep that in mind. thanks!
@rough zenith I would read "So good they can't ignore you" by Cal Newport
That should put you on the right track for enjoyment and $$$
love the username @hushed basalt - I spent a lot of time in telco years ago... and now as an IT guy I also take care of the phone system for six small companies... including a small call center. Used to do that at large scale, but it's more fun for a small place. 🙂
I wonder what the usff optiplex is for
i need a router. Tomato is good but it ain't pfsense
From looking at other posts on the blog, it's likely it's used for Home Assistant duties.
To be honest it's better than a pi
I have a bunch of sff optiplexes
A usff one can probably be had as the same price as a rpi 4
And it'll have a real x86 i5 and 4-8GB of ram and real gigabit PCI nucs and a real 128gb+ ssd
@wet pilot Not even 6 channels, TosLink cant transmit dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio as it doesnt have ennough bandwidth
morning y'all
Hello, i have a question. What is the best Smart Speaker to integrate in HA? My intention is to use as a media player, spotify and also text-to-speech .
ok....
alexa is easy for tts _ also prittey useful with amazon music
but rest - meh
But no spotify ?
ok thank you
Google is good
@midnight adder my google homes work well
It messes up our multiple Spotify accounts though
@scenic radish also for TTS , spotify and general media player ?
haven't used spotify but yes for the other two
oke cool
and any idea of the sound quality between google home and google nest hub ?
the google home has much better sound quality than the google nest hub, but the google nest hub max is probably better. haven't used that one
oke thank you for the info !
👌
The scene concept is a bit redundant for us
But I'm interested in the quality and price of the button itself
yeah i'm gonna keep an eye on that too
i do have two smartthings buttons ($15 each) that work well though
around 7 xiaomi buttons and 15 amazon dash
damn son
further more around 10 hue remotes
RF buttons are still the cheapest at ~$3 😉
just got an RF-Bridge with EspHome
wich
Xiaomi
Never had a problem with zigbee2mqtt - you can program up to 5 presses and a long hold
RF buttons are very reliable. There's no connection to anything so they're very stable
well...
Once you get a good bridge setup (I recommend making one with an ethernet connection)
okay, i dont know if i was dreaming or what...but i could have sworn that in the Google Event last week they said that an DIY/Home Automation Enthusiast WWGA program was coming...am I on something?
found it!
We’ll also invite smart home developer enthusiasts to participate in our Device Access for Individuals sandbox, allowing you to directly control your own Nest devices for your private integrations and automations.
here's the sign up for more info site https://developers.google.com/nest/device-access
Device Access for Commercial use (app developers, device manufacturers, and platforms) will be available in early 2020 to qualified partners. The Individual Device Access sandbox will open in late 2020. We will email you when the program you're interested in is available, or you can check our Device Access website for updates.
So we have to wait a year...or keep holding on to WWN integration until then.
Pretty cool. That, coming from someone who gave a lot of people a mild heart attack a few months ago when they announced the end of their "Works with Nest" program 🙂
I think they're trying to get a rein on things, perhaps in an effort to control the quality of things that people put out? Or so it feels. Maybe to help protect their customers.
Maaaaaybe NobuCasa can become a partner?
Home Automation Enthusiast mhmmm google
Who knows, you might be able to get Fitbit data the same way soon!
I'd LOVE to get Garmin Connect data.
But I've tried, they want a bunch of paperwork, money, and it's not so straightforward to make your own app..
They don't just have an API like some; you have to integrate it with customers who download the app, then you can collect the data, but you have to have a privacy policy, etc etc, and it's just a lot of work for something that only I would consume (for my own case, that is) ... but yeah, perhaps Nabu Casa would do something like they did with Alexa, how they're being the middleman per se.
@brave panther That's a lot more doable now that they've dropped the stupid $5000 sign up fee
They're slowly working it into something usable.
@scenic radish there's electrolytes in sleep?!
in the latest human update, yes
are you running beta human_os?
dev actually
scratches neck y'all got any of dem dev invites?
real glitchy at times
So @strange vapor to be fair, that's amazing. Their API has actually come quite a long way too, looking at it... https://developer.garmin.com/connect-iq/api-docs/ ... I might fiddle with it one of these days.
View the API docs for the Connect IQ SDK.
Seems pretty easy to get the SDK loaded into Eclipse too, and the language isn't foreign.
Wir haben spaz!
makit anay na lang kita
@brave panther Connect-IQ is more for apps on the garmin devices as far as I know. For integrations with HA, the Health API is probably more apt..
Yeah the more I look, the less I see. I was beginning to think the same.
The Health API was what I requested access to a couple years ago, and got shot down because I don't have an official privacy policy etc..
Wow...
Wow
Annoying that they don't have the ability for a normal user to request a token that can be used to access just their data. It's the usual way to bypass a lot of the privacy issues for an individual's data
Probably fireball whiskey.
🤢
@unreal orbit @light trout now i really want a bratwurst
i fear if i simply said "brat" people might not know what i'm talking about
I just had some last week. They were delicious 🤤
so good
problem is i'm being more careful with what i eat. my BMI puts me in the overweight category which is hilarious because i'm 185 lb, 6' 0" (84 kg, 183 cm)
but BMI doesn't take in to account muscle mass so it's a load of shit
Brats are good for you though 🙂
lots of saturated fat, that's really the only issue
I feel your pain. I'm 6'2" and goal weight 180 but everyone gives me the side eye like "oh you'll be too thin at that weight" ... like man, you do realize i'm not far from that, right now, right?
people really just need to mind their business
of course, when you used to weigh 420, 180 is like sticks and bones
yeah 🙂
well gratz on the weight loss
i appreciate the encouragement from people, so i suppose they have the right to share their opinion too
I watch what I eat. It goes from my hand to my mouth, tbh watching it is not too exciting
well yeah positive feedback is welcome
😄 the "see food diet"
not in shape? round is a shape.. right guys?
Luckily my metabolism hasn't caught up with me yet. Still living that eat what I want life
right? anyone?
to be honest, most people that were heavy early in life will remain so (and have a tendency to gain weight faster) and the same is true for the thin.
there's studies on this, that by something like age 23 you're pretty much, for the most part, about the weight you'll tend to always be
has to do with fat cell division and how hard it is to shrink them, and that you can't really lose the cells, they just get smaller
I can live with being 160lbs forever 👍
hey, enjoy it. i LOVE being able to do stuff like roller coasters and bicycling and just ... things in general ... that were harder or impossible to do when i was larger.
running cat5 cables doesn't cause me to break out in a pool of sweat now, either 😄
Congrats on losing the weight 🎉 I don't know the struggle, but I doubt I could do it if I were in that position
yeah that's awesome, it's a great accomplishment
also i still sweat a ton at 185 lol
lots of small goals. "break 350" "break 300" etc etc ... look up and you're tiny.
and my thyroid is fine so not sure what the deal is
yeah i still sweat when exercising which is annoying but i chalk that up to glands. oh well, whatever keeps me cool
well that's normal
I think my weight has a lot to do with the way I eat everyday. I tend to not eat anything until after 4PM
i just get warm easily. anything above 75 and i'm uncomfortable unless the dew point is low
eh the time of day thing is a myth
generally it's about calories in vs calories used
save money on warming the house in winter.. that plus server rack = cheap!
Well less about the time and more about the quantity. Not eating anything until late limits how much I can eat before it's time for bed
if only we could train our bodies to not store excess calories
oh i see what you mean @unreal orbit
We'll get there eventually
i misunderstood what you said
yeah that's what i went by. aimed to hit 10,000 steps a day, and average a 1000 calorie per day (or more) deficit. nothing too uncomfortable, but within reason. at 1000 kcal/day deficit, that's 2 lbs a week.
like i said, lots of small things. cutting out sodas, doing lots of exercise, and just watching what i ate.
easy to do though with the proper foods. high fiber and water content, and foods with lots of protein
and small changes like you said too
I gave up soda as a child, so that is probably a major factor for me as well
well.. when you do exercise like cycling and walking and end up burning 4000 or more calories a day, plus your BMR of about 2000, eating 5000 a day is a LOT. so it's quite easy to get 1000 a day deficit.
fat has 9 calories per gram and is not satiating. carbs/protein are 4 cal/gram
and protein is more satiating
@brave panther ah yeah, that's a good point
but carbs are delicious
true lol
jelly beans are 4 calories each 😦
the whole "fat is the enemy" thing is dumb though
unsaturated fats are good and saturated are too to a limited extent
trans fats though... no bueno
but tic tacs are 0 cal each
jk that's because of <0.5 cal lol
I prefer gender fluid fats
yeah. i never bought the "low fat" thing, it was all CICO (calories in, calories out), exercise, water, you know - the stuff your doctor tells you 🙂
everything in moderation. everything
... wait til the liberals find out that computers are programmed in binary ...
speaking of which, there was a guy who was working on a non-binary operating system 😐
that literally sounds like another computer joke
computer/societal joke
i can't tell if you're joking
ternary computers have been around for a while
well that's a $5 word right there
aka trinary
or whatever the equivalent is in your local currencies
ternaies are amazing.
and how the fuck does that exactly work anyway
shame Python shits on them
-1, 0, 1
yes
/r/inclusiveor
to beer or not to beer?
not 2 beer
4 beer?
4 beer!
I'm not a rocket surgeon, I don't have all the answers 🤷
99% of the time he has the answer every time
That account is operated by bots
Javasript (elegance): var str = some_boolean ? "is_true" : "is_false";
Java (not far from the tree): String str = some_boolean ? "is_true" : "is_false";
PHP (we got you bro): $str = some_boolean ? "is_true" : "is false";
Python (FUUUUUU): str = "is_true" if some_boolean else "is_false"
Python, why 😐
i don't even know what i'm looking at here
all comes down to the parsing. they all work properly, provided some_boolean is a boolean.
str = f"is_{bool(some_boolean)}"
fancy dick :p
Python does do Ternary, always has....
Just in a more readable format without the ? and :
😄
Ternary logic is in lots of things. Ternary circuits are a different story
Brief research indicates ternary computing states are no power, power, negative power
but I won't pretend to know how that would work in a real world circuit. My logic always falls back to binary in some capacity
yeah python 3 has some real niceties. print f"Hello {first_name} {last_name}" .. i used to hate having to change code and count my indexes for the old print...
print "Hello %s %s" % (first_name, last_name) ... dear god, when you wanted to move something around
"no power" == @ work
"negative power" == just got home from work
"power" == Should be sleeping
@brave panther That was added in py3.6
print f".. is py2
print(f"... for py3
Don't mention python2!! Have a nice large codebase which was fixed up for Python 3. Main issue we had were a few tests. Dealing with other teams who are stuck on Python 2 and don't want to update is, em, fun!
We have a system that depends on Python 2.4 😦
Runs on XP too?
Centos 6, almost as bad. Luckily not anywhere near public facing!
Hell, at this point locked down so it can be hit from a small set of hosts.
You should have an internal hacktoberfest to get it up to speed 😄
They're investigating a third party option to replace it and buy their way out. That hasn't been going well.
We still run a few critical systems in BASIC 🙂
I wish we could all just get on the same version. I mean, sheesh...
- A fresh install of CentOS 7.7 gives you Python 2.7.5, and adding Red Hat Software Collection Library) gives you 3.6.8
- A fresh Debian Buster install gives you 2.7.16, and you can install python3 which gives you 3.7.3
Why is it so hard? Ugh...
@unreal orbit I know of a woman who's the primary maintainer of a large FORTRAN codebase for a financial institution. They can't get anyone in to take over, and she wants to retire.
Waiting until a system literally implodes before replacing it, always a good strategy 👍
Everytime she has tried to just quit they've just thrown more money at her till she says yes, but I get the feeling that's not going to work anymore and then their fucked.
As she puts it, the bus factor is not good on that system!
my last job, i worked for a contractor to General Electric, we still had systems running Win NT 4 .. from late 90s... because one of their machining plants had control software that only worked on that machine.
A friend of mine is a VP Of Software Development in BoA in Dublin. They're rewritting a large legacy system in Python.
The acceptance testing is insane, and means they have to do crazy things like write C modules for doing maths in a certain way in Python so that the rounding works the same as it does on the system it's replacing.
ie, they replay the data in, and the same report better come out, down to the last thousand of a cent!!!!
BoA in Dublin... I don't know why I find that so amusing
They have a massive office here.
The fun part is that their pay scale is based entirely on title. So the software dev side is full of Vice Presidents so they could pay what the market was demanding. They also dropped the dress code for the coders 😄
thousandths of a cent add up when you're doing billions of transactions
Office Space 😉
Exactly, and they've found one case where two "identical" mainframes were doing the rounding slightly differently, and part of the acceptance testing includes accounting for that :/
so basically, they're just "porting" the code so it works exactly the same.
that's not so bad, if you're familiar with both languages... unfortunately sometimes you encounter oddities, like how some languages don't like to work the same with the same (or similar) code so it takes longer 🙂
(don't get me started on Java HashMap and oh my god iterators...)
@unreal orbit well running the system in BASIC probably makes debugging easier lol
"oh i typed goto instead of go to. fixed"
as long as you're not typing on a TI calculator that is
- print "Hello world"
- goto 10
everyone's first program? 🙂
@brave panther That' s the initial goal, get everything in a more modern language, and get a shitload of testing around it for acceptance. Then start building on it for the feature backlog that the old systems just can't handle.
I used to LOVE programming my TI-83 to do goofy shit like calculate stuff for me (y=mx+b style etc)
i made a "game" that does nothing other than count up forever until you hit ENTER
i have the high score
definitely spent more cumulative time programming it to give me the answer to things, than i saved cumulatively by not doing it by hand
i made tons of programs
our teachers let us use programs on tests as long as we made them ourselves
i did in fact make them myself but i'm not sure how they'd verify that lol
i used the TI emulator on a computer so that i didn't kill my fingers on the calculator
to create the programs. then transferred them to the calc
same. they told us if we knew the formulas well enough to write a program that gave the right answer, we could do that
ok hang on
lol yes, that emulator was the bomb
idk, i'm in USA-KY
Seems like I'll be going to Georgia instead of Texas in January
Oh lawd, pass me some coke
cocaine?
the Coke museum is kinda cool in atlanta
fresh out, sorry

Something on /r/funny that's actually funny. How about that
What are they implying about Mounds? I feel personally attacked.
Hello everyone 🙂
Alright, who wants to tell him the truth about "Hassio in docker" https://community.home-assistant.io/t/ive-somehow-lost-hass-io-but-home-assistant-is-still-working-fine-help/145220
So my HASS.io menu item (left hand side of screen) has disappeared, and when I check the System Health screen, it shows ‘hassio’ as ‘false’. I’m running Docker, with Hass.io on that, set up using the script - https://raw.githubusercontent.com/home-assistant/hassio-...
lol
I would actually offer advice if it was anything other than "uninstall and reinstall home assistant"
lol i don't go to the forums
Although I have no clue if there's actually another solution
I'm probably 50/50 between here and the forum
How do I install hassio on docker
That seems like a good thing
I must have its, my precious
Stupid fat hobbitsses
Lol

Weird choice of server to boost tbh. Like aren’t most of the benefits pretty useless here?
You now get 2 boots with nitro, the other server i boost is at the top level already.
2 boosts eh, that’s a good change
Cause it’s a fucking lot of money to pay for emojis
What is boost
It is part of discord Nitro, Depending on the number of boosts a server gets more special features.
But, not part of Nitro Classic...

Oh yeah totally worth it atxbyea
If you can't explain something so that somebody outside the field can understand, you don't know it well enough
Or you're not Randall Munroe...
Like this one we have
Supported, known to work -> warm fuzzies all around
Supported, not known to not work -> an HPite may be in trouble
Supported, known to not work -> an HPite is in trouble
Unsupported, known to work -> lucky today, unlucky tomorrow?
Unsupported, not known to not work -> there but for the grace of Turing
Unsupported, known to not work -> no, it was not deliberate ;-)
🤣
I've seen a similar list somewhere that ended with "3xx: F**k off!, 4xx: F**k you!, 5xx: F**k!"
TIL discord doesn't handle the global flag on substitution regexes.
🤣
So typing s/foo/bar will replace the first occurrence of foo in your last message with bar, but s/foo/bar/g won't replace all of them.
As seen here/g and x.
👎
Also doesn't work with a capital s, obviously. Free tip for mobile users.
Yeah that was the first thing I tried when I found out that discord did that
What are good hotels in karlskrona @low harness ? 🤣
Hmm... let's see... out of all the hotels I stayed in in the place where my house and own bed are...
Scandic is nice, actually. I stayed there for my wedding night.
what about the motels you take your special friends to
And so did almost all the guests.
But I heard Conrad is good too. And they have appartments if you are staying for long.
Anywhere in central Karlskrona is two minutes from anywhere.
Except you'll have headwind the entire way. Both directions.
Seriously. It's a windy place. Dress appropriately.
In norway we usually call something that is perfectly placed "in the middle of the puddle of butter" or "in the middle of the navel", we call Narvik "in the middle of the navel-lint" so karlskrona is probably similarly placed
We say "Mitt i smeten" - in the middle of the batter.
@clear ferry an HPite ?
A person working at HP
Hockeypucks 😛
I find this rather fascinating. The bottom three lines are temperature outdoors. Anyone care to guess which days were overcast?
Yeah, once I started graphing temperature, humidity, and light levels, I started noticing some interesting things
That's nice. The more expensive component the better.
@low harness @clever mortar an observation i made about two years ago was that the lower the low temperature for the day, the lower the dew point will be. for example, the air on a day with a high of 90F (32C) and a low of 60F (15.5C) will be more dry than on a day with the same high temp and a low of 70F (21C). after doing some research on this i discovered that the dew point can in fact be used to predict the low temp
Interesting
also that mentholmint schnapps and hot chocolate == incredible
If the upper lines are indoor temps, that's some nice house insulation you've got there Thomas.
I still remember when I smoked
and smoked menthol cigarettes
that flavour will never vanish from my mind
I take a few of those when I'm sick.. feels good, but makes me sicker 😅
Windows 10 after the last update... Browser crashed because I ran out of RAM. Currently idle with basically nothing but IRC and and Discord on. Committed memory 22GB
True. I hope there was some other fix as well though
I would google what those words mean but I don't have enough ram 😡
🤣
discord is an electron app, pretty thirsty for ram
been running for 4 days here
@young sigil They are. And it is. That's how you build when the outside temperatures vary by 60-70 K over the year.
uses 54.2MB RAM @wet pilot
60-70 Kelvin?
I don't even get how the RAM usage in W10 works...
it thinks it has tons of ram, but when the committed value hits the ceiling, everything just starts crashing
What's even weirder is those are commas, not periods 😉
at least it's not in Finnish 🙂
That is the way it should be
committed is both physical memory and page file
how much is stored in both of those afaik
if both run out you are out of memory, which is never good, that means your disk cannot flush the pages properly
I usually see issues with that with servers that have say... 512GB RAM, and spindle drives, and lots of video streams coming in, if the cache is not configured for the drives the memory will fill to 100% and drop all memory and restart
That's all true from what I understand, but the issue is the RAM is not actually getting used, it just stacks it up in the SSD until I run out of space on my disk and then it crashes
as you can see it shows 11GB of free RAM. Yet the committed size is 16GB+Pagefile
is your SSD only 12GB ?
less than that
no wait, 16GB physical and 9.3GB swap it seems
if your SSD is that small, you should buy something bigger or turn off the page file
uhm, well the SSD is 240Gb, but it's full as it happens 🙂
the page file should already be allocated on boot
so it won't take any extra space after boot
unless it is dynamic, then I'm not sure, I always lock page files
It's allowed to expand if needed in the settings
don't do that
if you have a SSD and 16GB RAM you really shouldn't be needing page files anyway..
Ah, Windows, auto-expanding page files, and small disks... that brings back memories...
I've had the system run on pure RAM as well but the problem with that was that some games would actually fill the 16GB
from yesterday @clever mortar ? 😉
do you run java-games with shitty code @orchid rose ?
and it doesn't matter what size my pagefile is in this case. It just keeps eating the memory with no reason 😄
I actually don't have a single windows box left to admin, everything is docker here now 🤣
like I restarted the PC maybe 9 hours ago and since it's eaten ~18GB
yeah. It's an issue that I got after the latest update again and I've had something like this previously
then I fixed it by reinstalling VoiceMeeter iirc but I'm currently not using it at all so...
currently I have 23 apps, 98 background processes and 94 windows processes running
where's that information from?
task manager
Oh I see now. Yeah less of everything for me. After reboot I have 5.6GB committed with a little bit more stuff running than previously.
after a few days of playing around with HA and pulling hairs, i was given a vm at work to do testing of databases and spinning up some other environments.... the fun never stops, does it
time to install home assistant on that vm
if you don't, i will be mildly disappointed
and you don't want that, do you?
@wary mica you are given VMs ? I just continuously make my own, in every enviroment I touch 😉
yeah i currently had a shitty old laptop running something we needed, and i was like "hey. can i hav vm plz"
the shitty laptop was just for testing purposes and now we're actually planning on using it in production
i tried to pip install homeassistant in a python venv on my machine at work
I see I've been out of the SMB marked for too long, people running stuff on laptops
it installed, but --open-ui doesn't work lol
@scenic radish PEBKAC

oi it was just for testing
and i didnt have the pull at that point to ask for a vm to test
oh sorry, it was just about me trying to install home assistant in a venv on my work machine lol
no questions or anything
for science
ah gotcha, thanks 😘
ah yeah i missed a few steps...
i thought i could just create a venv and pip install that shit. i'm on windows. but if i have trouble and i really want this working for some reason i'll go to #551864459891703809 lol
Installing.. on Windows... 🤣
I'd wish you luck, but there isn't enough in the world
Dude.. use #449717345808547842
i know. for science
@light trout it's on my work machine, i'm just curious what discovery might find lol
So?, Still docker
Say you need docker for a customer project ;)
windows 🤢
it's my work machine. don't judge me 😉
Anyone who says any linux distro makes a better workstation OS than Windows is blind imo
server OS I agree though
Linux on the desktop is ok when set up right, but ... Chromebook
if it weren't for the propitary work applications I run from the last decade and don't work in wine I would gladly revert my desktop back to linux
...i like my chromebook 😢
I have never run a linux distro that's even half as smooth as Windows 🤷
(again, workstation only)
I've run smooth Linux desktops on hardware that Windows wouldn't boot on 😉
ugh...are we gonna debate ios vs android next?
There is no debate
Yes... both suck, both are awesome
I ran fedore core desktop from 2003-2006, and ubuntu from 2008-2010, but ubuntu was way too sluggish, made me miss my fedora core on a single core p4 system
because i h8 that deb8 too
I guess it's just not in the spirit of debate to say almost every OS has its use case
When I think about it I ran slackware desktop from 98 to 00, with dual boot for those pesky windows gaming sessions 🤔
and I ran BeOS for a few months in 96 I think
What's your preferred desktop distro now @clear ferry ?
Windows because I'm stuck with a lot of legacy applications
Say you weren't hindered by that, if you actually had a choice
I might jump back to fedora core
@scenic radish you're surprised that following instructions gives results? 🤣
I'm anyways debating on retiring my desktop, it's 12 years old
i didn't follow the instructions, i just did pip install in the venv lol
I just need something that supports 3 displays and has a soundcard
and I would be happy
Oh man, driver compatibility is also a huge issue for me
I've had some very bad experiences with shit linux drivers
@scenic radish those are the venv instructions 😉
ohhh gotcha lol
obviously it was PEBKAC the first time like atx said before
and the only game I played really while I was using it was either RTCW:ET or WoW
I have something like 250 games on Steam, so that is also a reason I probably won't ever give up Windows completely
268 is the actual number. Mostly junk from bundles. Probably only about half are games that I actually wanted
humble and random steam bundles
Neato
You need some dry ice for it
I've been an adult for many years and have not taken advantage of the fact that I can buy dry ice now... what am I doing with my life?
the jar cost me $3 and the wemos and leds probably $4
and motion activated via my camera
should be good
Do you get trick or treaters at your house?
Not sure how widespread that phenomenon is
I turn off all external lights and pretend I'm not home
it's quite big in scandinavia
It's annoying
Interesting. I was bummed when we moved into our new house and only got 2
we have a few actual kids but mostly teens around here
@light trout are you a curmudgeon for all holidays or just Halloween? 😉
All
but lots of parents that drive their kids from neighborhood to neighborhood :/
And people in general
how the grinc.... ludeuus stole halloween
I do agree that people in general suck
@light trout just move a condo/apartment with secured entry, problem solved
That is the plan
currently living that condo lyfe
Doesn't help when they're inside the complex 😱
it's nice to own but basically just pay everyone to do all exterior maintenance lol
They will fast learn not to disturb me
house 4 lyfe
I enjoy doing my own exterior maintenance. We were very close to buying a condo though. In our area the price difference isn't super huge between condo and house though
we moved away to buy a house here
DC area -> Charlotte area
cut housing prices by over half
i believe it
Oh jesus, I can't imagine buying a house in DC
I'm in an LA suburb, that's bad enough
townhomes start at 500k in Ashburn (KIAD area)
yep, for the smallest one and bare minimum features
yikes
I have 2600sqm, I bought it for $227k
granted, our 2br2ba appartment was 1800/mo + utilities so perspective i guess
My house is half that size and I paid almost double 😕
our mortgage is cheaper than that now
1100 sq ft condo with flexicore/CMU construction for $85K
2600sqm? seems huge
square meters? holy shit
our place is 2300 sqft -> 213.7 sqm
that's a friggin mansion
oh damn, I definitely misread that. My house isn't nearly that big 🤣
102 sqm for me :/
260k purchased 2 years ago here 🙂
27000 sqft? That doesn't seem right...
like i said
mansion
atxbyea is loaded
send some of those norwegian dollarydoos my way
that's closer to castle than mansion...
a mansion made of other... smaller mansions
compound/complex
I think that's called a town 🤣
I hate freedom units just as much as the next communist spy
that's what i figured
not as sweet as the super mansion though
2600sqft would be about 750k to a mil depending on the state (of the house, not in the country)
I can probably get close to $400k for it now
probably 600 - 750 now
my mortage is $850 per month
Generally you won't find a house that big that doesn't come with a fair amount of land
I have the normal size of land for that house roughly 8500sqft
i own exactly 1.85% of the common area of my condo complex, so there's that
Nooo @clear ferry don't start with retard measurement too!
yikes
lmao
I love when people use the argument of "if our measurements are so bad then why are we the only country that went to the moon"? Like NASA doesn't use metric.....
so i created my "spooky mode" automation to mildly scare my fiancee tomorrow lol
it turns everything off (TVs, lights, etc) with 0 transition time. then a second later says "it's spooky time bitches" and flashes all the lights red
it is surprisingly funny
@clear ferry i am somewhat back ....wrist is still huritng....been playing with the new yamaha axa3080 i got a couple of days ago
uh-oh, what happened?
broke my wrist in 4 places
sorry to hear that
thanks one bone 3 cracks other one chipped bone
oof. how'd it happen?
fell off steps
@dull chasm that's no fun, sorry.
thanks
@boreal pewter were you a pebble user too?
because i'm holding onto mine for dear life
What is pebble?
that hurts
More so if you put one in your shoe 😛
Hey there, new to smart things. I am completely renovating the house so I am planning to interface things such as lights, roller shutters, temperature and ventilation. I will probably use home assistant as it looks very friendly. btw I 'm an IT guy, that helps
New to SmartThings... you poor soul 😛
We'll soon convince you that Home Assistant should be at the heart of it all 😉
ahahah, I don't want to use those commercial spything
All the more reason to ditch ST then 😉
I think he may have meant "iot things"
Yep that's what I meant :p
well as an it guy i'm sure you've said RTFM at least once before, so hopefully we won't have to tell you that 😉
ahah I'm doing it all day
have you tried turning it off and on again?
all day too
Actually I am planning to use the docker version but I don't know yet how it will interface with a touchscreen
I mean, in a docker swarm environnement with several Pis
Yes
And no
Don't confuse the back end ( #330944238910963714 ) with the front end ( #frontend-archived )
If your touch screen can display a web page, it'll work
And, HA in a swarm, may prove "interesting" - good luck 😉
Maybe - depends on how old, but there are other UIs
All good, do you guys have any preference for a zwave stick on a Pi
I got a 3 but might have to use a 4 soon
i like my HUSBZB-1
See the docs - links from the #zwave-archived channel 😉
zigbee and z-wave
Choices depend in part on where in the world you are
europe
The only place someone would want to go 😄
Then... HUSBZB-1 isn't for you
😢
This is why RTFM is good, because it tells you these things 😉
that's too bad, the Aeotec looks good but does not seem to work with the Pi4
oooooh gottem
It does work, you just need to follow the instructions 😉
gottem again
I'll be here all night folks
We need some sort of :rtfm: sarcastic emoji

@scenic radish NASA definitely uses metric because they had an issue where both units were used and a mission failed by crashing into mars
they went metric only after that
I was the one who said that 😉
that was villhellm but thx lol
oh
you're confusing the purply bois
you purples all look the same
but yes, good point
a bit
most science agencies use metric these days
and least for their data collection and storage
they'll run the conversions for the peons though
i agree metric is better than imperial but i won't insult other countries like @boreal pewter does
😉
Fernando Alonso failed to qualify for Indy 500 this year because the car bottomed out after using imperial instead of metric units in the setup iirc
the amount of times I have to convert mm to inches in a day at work is too damn much
(and vice versa)
rent is too damn high meme here
@scenic radish I usually argue that if you call a dumb person dumb it can't be an linsult telling the truth
idk, i didn't have a choice to use anything other than imperial soo 🤷
Oh you're playing that card
uh-oh, i might have been shadowbanned for my last comment in #609399695466430465
👻
it wasnt all t hat important lol
so who keeps rearranging the dev channel lol I keep seeing general getting moved around 😛
It's real easy to do, I have done it multiple times without noticing
like when zwave was moved under other?
I don't see #zwave-archived
lol
i just realized that components are now officially integrations... but we still have custom components
ughhhhhhhhhhhhh
and custom integrations doesn't sound as nice as the alliteration of custom components
And the folder is still custom_components/
my life is over. i must now uninstall home assistant.
been nice knowing you guys
but home assistant is now literally unusable
Source code still has them under components as well
kill me
🤣
next year we will call it something else too
componentgrations
Let's do modules next
ah yes modules lol
add-on modules 😉
if we keep changing it might as well have less syllables lol
CustoModules
Of course in camelcase which home assistant doesn't support
That wouldn't create any more confusion
HA has converted me to snake case
keep it confusing so that whatever direction is taken ....we the people just didnt understand
In that case, we should call integrations buckets
👍
or kegs and barrels
Damn, I was a rebel this whole time and I didn't even know it
You never suspect yourself
🐍 case 4 lyfe
what is docker then?
The person who parks the boat
dass cool
That looks so like there's electrical shorting going on
Get rid of the cable and it might look cool
right one almost has a Sans vibe going
I imagine the cable is just for testing/setup
Yeah, the battery packs will go inside the box
And frosting on the faces and lid to obscure the inside
Now, why the fork doesn't the mqtt discovery work
is this the good place?
Discovery 🤢
Manual didn't work either @unreal orbit😂
someone laugh at my jokes pls
i need validation
thank
so i don't know why i decided to install home assistant in a venv on my work machine but i guess i have access to the template dev tool at work now
so there's that
discovery didn't pick up anything as expected, probably different subnets for devices
chalk up another W bois
List of FAQs, including one explaining the difference between Home Assistant (the software) and Hass.io (an installer).
Home Assistant is the software
Hass.io, Docker, Hassbian, venv, etc ... those are ways of installing Home Assistant
That's not Home Assistant
That's for the Hass.io install method only
It's how you install other software
Eh, Hassbian is a merger of an OS and an install method, bit like the Hass.io images
tru
Didn't you read it @midnight adder ? https://discordapp.com/channels/330944238910963714/330990055533576204/639146223588212771

Vlc and adobe
Do please see #613790866523422723
can i interest you in #613790866523422723?
How about a half pint of #613790866523422723 ?
What's that one channel that's about running hassio in docker?
i'll take a liter o' #613790866523422723
well you could...
...if you ran the hassio installer
👍
no
It'd set fire to your system, and bring down the moon on your head
I'm out, have fun 👋
I AM CALM
And... don't forget you can get banned for being an ass 😉
rule #8
don't be an ass
Server bans are IP bans
I'm sure if there were someone spamming using a VPN they would just take away public server invites
probably
then the forum would be flooded with "i have an error, pls halp" posts with no error attached
Nice
Now this channel just looks like two people not talking to each other talking to each other
Tink mad at ted, although they are very indirect about it
Was the guy banned or did he just delete all of his messages?
Looks like a mass delete of some sort
@clear ferry tinkerer and I fight all the time in DMs
I tried hassio in docker
Instructions were unclear
Now I live in a shipping container
I see what you did there
Which telco do/did ya work for BTT? I worked for a manufacturer first years who was bought as a division of Global Crossing then spun off again and became part of Polycom.
Also worker for a place that made channel banks, DS3 muxes, and GR303 stuff.
wow automated mosquitto killer? no way lol https://www.gearbest.com/home-smart-improvements/pp_3001071306331967.html?wid=2000001
Mine was long ago too. Stopped telecom around 1999 stayed in server and data center builds after that. Telstra was always cool to us.
LOL. I have to couch that by saying a number of our carrier customers were the dying Baby Bells — Telstra were saints compared to ticked off Bell people. LOL.
haha
what do you do phnx?
software dev
haha
its definitely obnoxious getting on calls with them
6:30p Eastern for just as obnoxiously early for them
beta testing one of our products though so i guess its worth
i'm in brisbane so it is +10 here
GMT+10?
yep
@wet pilot what sort of dev work do you do
It's fun dealing with NY people from Perth
Literally any further away and they'd start coming back the other way
lol
Python dev 🙂
back when i was doing support i did overnights for a bit to handle APAC
7p-7a Sa - Tu local time
was pretty brutal
they promised to move me to AUS but they completely underestimated the difficulty of your immigration system
nah, our main product is hardware monitoring
ScienceLogic, might have seen SL1/EM7 thrown around
i work on a secondary product though. A workflow execution platform
Unchained
yeah, quite old at this point
I'll be here...well not for much longer. Bedtime
