hmm, okay. I'll try out the different settings. Seems weird it can connect to the guest network but not the main
So my remote ssh box works. Yay
Good thing too cause I wouldn't be able to fix it if it broke
I really don't want or need a vpn. Everything is either http or ssh
never wastet a thought on in untill now
What does dd stands for really
disk destroyer is apropiate of cause ๐คฃ
disk duper ๐
Well I just try to dearest daughterthe VMvisor image over to an rather fast USB stick over.. that thing has 314 MB and isnt finished after 20 minutes... That yould mean another dead USB
dd wil copy even zeros, so if you are copying a 16GB stick it will copy 16GB
I believe conv=sparse will skip that though
shouldnt it stop after the image is written?
ive been going for
sudo dd if=VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.7.0.update03-14320388.x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M
(the bs of the stick could be 512k only though.. fu ๐
)
Oh copying that way ๐
Just run a proper server with oobm and mount the iso during boot
wife says no to an rack ๐ฆ
but oobm?
now instead of an rack there is an regular tower standing around - she can live with that
Oobm = iLO, iDRAC etc
now I have to figure out how to implement this on this regular tower fu xD
You can't
would have been nice
Buy proper servers ๐
convince my wife ๐
Get a proper wife
Ehh.. I trend to keep her ๐คฃ
Luckaly I can do most of the time what the hell I want
me :Darling can i make this and that that way
she: no
renders to: I do it anyway
When its a bad idea I just have to revert it
ah!
The dd command stands for โdata duplicatorโ
My wife says if I bring something home I have to throw something out ๐
But I just bring it in at night
And hide it in the rack ๐
But she also uses my servers for school ๐
I really want a rack :P
but there is really no space for it - I have to be so honest
Buy a house ๐
Really, I haven't seen anything like that since Riloe, which was very limited
Never seen at all, but I've only worked with enterprise and mission critical for the last 12 years ๐
:p
You could build the restart part with a micro and some transistors
The actual control part is gonna be hard though
Showing the boot, recording the boot, mounting during boot and firmware uploads is what makes oobm worth it ๐
Slowly working on something to automatically turn the TV off
It's quite funny when ffmpeg polls the camera as it just blinks every 10 seconds
that's an interesting project. How well does it work in dark I wonder
As I'm using a c920 temporarily
I'm thinking about making another automation to disable the automation if it's too dark
In theory the TV will provide enough light
there are dark scenes at times though which could make it lose the faces?
Yeah, but not for more than 10 minutes
maybe not. It's probably pretty easy to figure out once working anyway
I was going to work on my movie automations again and make that disable it too
you could add some ir blasters
I do have a modified Xbox 360 camera if I need to
But that's super low res
And slightly broken
you might be able to remove the ir filter on some cameras but the quality will be a lot worse
Might be possible to get ffmpeg to combine the c920 and ir camera images
Is there a reason you're tracking the number of people as well?
Not really
alright, there are instances where that's probably useful but maybe not in this setting
Need to make a gdpr sign and work out how I can disable the camera as the Living room is also the spare room
I might change TV watchers to a template binary sensor
got anoyed with the known hosts.
throw this in bashrc to delete an line fast and easy
knownhosterror () {
sed -i " $1 d " ~/.ssh/known_hosts
}
ssh-keygen -R hostname
manpage ftw
-R hostname | [hostname]:port Removes all keys belonging to the specified hostname (with optional port number) from a known_hosts file. This option is useful to delete hashed hosts (see the -H option above).
Funny how there's a built-in function for common issues
lol
Is there a child tracker that can be implemented in HA?`
has google disabled the local api for google home?
I haven't used it for a while but was going to now and it doesn't seem to work the same way anymore ๐ฆ
yeah, they changed something
well that sucks...
that was always pretty hacky. completely un-documented
Do you know if there's any way of pulling the information about alarms from GH anymore?
that died with that api
Do any of you guys play with esxi?
i spun it up but my server is way too damn loud
I use Hyper-V Server instead
๐คข
What its free xD
I really do wish I went with some sort of vmare software for it though
But this gets the job done
esxi is free
Well maybe one day I'll switch but not anytime soon. Maybe server 2.0
Just be glad the vm's hosted are 90% ubuntu based
Do you need a vm though
that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
well, some companies force docker because it's what all the new kids are doing. Not always the correct thing.
the secondary product that i work on requires docker because it is intended to be a distributed system
there ya go. best of both worlds ๐
yep, we use docker/micro services for the right reasons
primary product is trying to move in that direction but it'll take them for freaking ever because they have to break up a monolith
they're still running py2
hah. great idea: open source it. hah
leave a note in the anonymous suggestions box. lol
lol that'll never happen
Fair enough. For work
my team has open-sourced a bunch of tools we created though
But keep in mind I think admins roles for traditional vm server stuff will get smaller and smaller
it'll take a while but you're probably right
There's going to be a lot of work for a long time
But as more as more corporates remove/downsize all their on prem/colo stuff for pure cloud solutions,
There will be more people who didn't upskill after a diminishing number of jobs
Thing as a Service is so in right now
that's happening everywhere too
i wouldn't want to be a powertrain assembler right now
Yeah best thing to do is focus on skills that are rare and valuable
I mean who needs a team of storage engineers managing ceph clusters when you can just use s3,
Etc etc
yup
If I was CTO for an enterprise I'd be pushing all undifferentiated heavy lifting to managed services
Everything is about outcomes, not how those outcomes are acheived
The closer your skill is to really providing those customer outcomes, the safer and more valuable you are
Hyper-V

Hyper-V!
@clear ferry ndonegan has something you might want to see
ok...its a propper cpu... but load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 ? there is something not right
But.. that is perfect if you have low load ๐
jeaaa... but 0.00.... While installing docker/hassio/pulling images....
INFINITE COMPUTE POWER!!111
My phone has enough power to install docker without lagging, if your computer doesn't there is something wrong ๐
Huh? This docker-virus binary pulls 100% cpu and bandwidth always
Every time I run cat /var/log/dmesg my load goes to 18.92!
I don't know why this rm -rf / doesn't work and everyone wants me to do it
Just do ALT+F4 in your mIRC window!
Oh thank you! Didnt know it was so useful

Oh forgot
@scenic radish you around?
Yeah, been busy... friend's bachelor party this weekend. What's up?
ah yeah i should upload my update that changes the estimated filter change days to "> 30" when it's over 30
variable package required some changes.
what'd you need to change? pretty sure i uploaded my working config
brb
this is the one i used: https://github.com/rogro82/hass-variables
if it's working for you with your changes, then it's all good. just want to make sure i don't need to change anything in my repo. it's possible i missed something when i uploaded it
i used the one from HACS
was afun little integration.
yeah those stats are prominently displayed on the main page of my frontend
on my page 3 (stats page)
Is there a small GPS tracker that works with HA? ๐ So u can put on cars etc ;P
sorry
aahh - I get angry with ESXi already - why the hell I cant add an USB3 controller
@hearty depot But @clear ferry told me ESXi is perfect in every way.....
pfff... I ll use Hyper-V soon
anyone here own a xiaomi mi tv box s
No.. I doubt it can play proper 4k at that price but I never really looked it up since I still get served by a Shield
Sorry guys, most random post, but is anyone here a riseup.net user who can get me an invite code please?
setting up a synology NAS for a client... I want one ;.;
but $600
oh how being married
i loved my synology device
but it was a 2012 2-bay basic model that i outgrew so I migrated over to an unraid machine
white box build kills synology from what I can tell
Synology and such are good as just simple storage devices
When you try to make them do more they really fall over
that's what i've heard
They have a lot of advantages, and disadvantaged
A lot simpler than a white box to get up and running
I would definitely never 'build' a pc for work
support contracts are key
Definitely telco
A 13 year old on another server I am on was apparently being paid to make 80 computers for some company
Wasnโt even getting $2k for it
does that include parts? if so, kid got fleeced ๐
consumer != enterprise needs
synology is "prosumer"
small biz can get away with it but are asking for trouble
3 years of warrenty
LinusTechTips found that out the hard way
oh?
i think GamersNexus did too
well 3 years on the nas, 5 years on the drives
by then they have expanded or got bought out / failed
I wanted to go enterprise class but they dont even have a rack
:S
@brisk glen $600 gotta up those numbers๐
@clear ferry I got them good on the email migration...
I'm probably blind by the fact that s single SSD when I install systems cost $80,000 ๐
Does it make it better that I install the systems with 200 of those minimum then? ๐
On top of the base system price...

lol
you should see my email migrating pricing per user vs the amount of work I really have to do
but to them the transition is butter smooth
Yeah, migrating from one SAN to another is pretty simple thankfully, but it will take me a few days usually, but my hourly rate of $200 per hour in business hours or $400 ooh is negligible compared to hardware prices ๐
I remember 12 years ago, a quad memory upgrade (2GBx4) for a hpux systems would rack you up $30000 just in hardware
Your ute is getting cold
Yes, you should see my inne
Have you started on the next email yet? ๐ @ocean mirage

Linus isn't exactly efficient when it comes to his own business hardware
he's definitely an example of what not to do at times
Half the stuff he gets for free. But all of it is very "cheap" if you ignore all the time his staff have spent on research, installation, repairs, maintenance and fault finding
I know it's part of the show
But definitely don't do as Linus does lol
Half the problem is his camera guy convinced them they need 8K Red cameras
the cost of the cameras and accessories and then all the costs of dealing with the sheer amount of data they produce is non trivial
Yeah I work with professional camera for a living full time
They made a decision with a hugggee capex and opex expenditure for no good reason
They could have got a very profesional camera for 1/4 of the capital costs and 1/8th of the storage costs
not sure what they really gain by shooting in 8k when you can't actually consume that anywhere
I have not @clear ferry , been a bit ill
I've been a functioning ill person, just low functioning
leave me alone, dont make me bring out the big guns
@wet pilot remasters in 10 years
heh storage consumption++++++++++
Like my customers who never delete data

I don't complain though ๐คท

The RED stuff is just stat pumping. Vanity metrics
https://twitter.com/EUCourtPress/status/1178982503266312192 EU Courts determin that a pre ticked check box does not count as consent under the EUs cookie legisiation

What standard should I look for when I am buying smarthome electronics in EU? Abit sceptical to some stuff that can be flashed by tasmota etc
Wouldn't trust any standard markings at all, but I'm comfortable with buying stuff and not use it for high load, for that I buy named brand
Like tplink for my water heater
And shelly1 for my in wall stuff
The rest I buy random Chinese mostly

They said they even work today on chinese national holiday
what you say to folks when they said: "Oh, smart home..you are very lazy then.."
I just get red in the face nad dont talk with that person anymore..
It's difficult tho. I understand everyone not wanting to do that. The reason to get lazy then is just a bit stupid then tho
can't say i've ever had anyone say that to me
but those people are stupid
and we don't like them
What is this other people ?
wut
It's funny since I discussed several times with someone. In summer, every time he told that he has been cutting the grass in the garden, I asked why he was not getting a robot for that and he always said like "no I just rather do it myself". He is a dev and I couldn't find another computer other than the MacBook Pro we get from work, no consoles, no streaming, just common fucking not even 1080p public TV
i don't think i understand what you're saying
but some people enjoy cutting the grass
i actually enjoyed my work as a landscaper
What is this grass thing?

@clear ferry I have here a WD My Book 2x 10TB in a deal
Doesn't look valuable when only taking disks tho
but think of how much info your history database could store on a 400gb sd card
and how not slow that would make home assistant
None because no one is as dump as hosting a DB on fucking MicroSD
it was a joke anon
And I answered kindly!
I have not signed a contract to not answer rhetoric questions

let me help you
also i'd like to think the storage controller on a pi would overheat upon reboot if it had a 400gb fucking db lol
gonna need that lickwid kooling
Just drop the pi in a small oil box lol
pretty clever
it's just an oil filled radiator (the first one)
that happens to do millions of calculations as a byproduct

what happend with rc.home-assistant.io ?
Wanted a sneakpeak but nothing ๐
so i've got $50 in amazon credit
what smart home goodies should i buy
thinking something boring like more water leak sensors
i have a zigbee/zwave radio plugged in my pi so my possibilities are endless
Get a Nvidia Shield, Nintendo Switch, OLED TV, save up for the PS5 or new Xbox, Klipsch home cinema system
good suggestions, but i'm set on TVs and actually just bought an xbox one x
i was thinking smaller
also the xbox one x is nice
but i'm annoyed with sony and microsoft because they keep targeting 4k resolution at not 60fps when they should target 1080p at 60 fucking frames per second
i don't want 4k resolution and, depending on how large your tv is and how far you sit away from it, you might not notice a difference between 1080p and 2160p
but you will notice a difference between 60fps and 30fps
Installed a 60fps plugin for MPC, you really notice a lot in the smoothness of the video
Is gonna get cooold
-25 degrees fahrenheit = -31.67 degrees celsius!
that's pretty brutal
yup - we've had arctic chill - its been happening for the past 2 years now
when it is that cold, you won't feel a thing even if you lost a finger
the feeling when you step out at -30 celsius and your lungs just stop you midbreath like "you've got to be kidding me"
it does get better after a few minutes though as long as there's no wind
yup - wind chill is the killer!
the wind chill made it feel like -50 F (-45.5 C) at one point by me earlier this year
i said fuck that and stayed home from work lol
good choice!
"tediore, where you at?"
"at home, not getting frostbite in my lungs"
which is, apparently, a real thing
that's a fear i didn't know i had
@last plaza we only get -35 here
-35 degrees celsius = -31 degrees fahrenheit!
-51 degrees celsius = -59.8 degrees fahrenheit!

@hearty depot ty, banned.
@boreal pewter oh shit I notice I've been out of the linux game for long, I thought we were still on kernel 4 ๐คฃ

how do you use rclone anon ? via a docker container or directly in a OS ? I saw there were docker containers and though about using that to sync my freenas picture folders and google drive
Well I use it at the end just on host and have a few Containers via systemd to start after them
So 5 crypt mounts via systemd, one normal for backups which are duplicati encrypted, 6 fuse Mounts via systemd as well
oh, I only need to mount a smb share from freenas, and sync that to a folder on google drive
And then just 6 upload scripts which are cron'ed
I tried using the cloud sync feature of freenas, but it was... not user friendly
it uses rclone in the backend, but the gui part is rubbish
What I found out is that you never want to write directly into a Gdrive Mount. It takes like 10 as much time
That's why I fuse and upload per script
hmmmm
I've only used fuse once, to mount a FTP share directly in linux ๐คฃ
it worked suprisingly well
Well I have like /mnt/google/backup and backup-gd, Mount to backup-gd and fuse backup and backup-gd
Because all Services rely on seeing what is there
And writing is in backup then as well as the upload
what, I set PasswordAuthentication no and it still allows me to login with a password ๐ค
@boreal pewter posted a message that is too long, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Hj6wcJhnQc/

If you don't require to SEE the files, you actually only need the move script ๐
This is just backup not using crypt and rc as said
For my media I also use rc and another systemd service that warms up the cache
Having one server for torrents and external streaming as well as my personal server in localhost just for local streaming also let me play all my movies in 4k just fine until now
hah
anybody has an idea how to open config folder in VS Code remotely through NabuCasa? ๐
that would be awesome
@clear ferry you know in Australia
Not only do we not have double paned windows or air sealing
put it on the barbie ?
But it's extremely common to find windows in bathrooms that don't close
They have permanent open sections with fly screen
wtf
Yeah mine has that
@hushed basalt I know a guy in Aus selling triple glazed windows and making a good living out of it.
Oh itโs definitely more of a thing these days but itโs not as common as some places
strange, can't get a ikea bulb that is 2 meters from my CC2531 to join
My brother was living in a cheap ass apartment in Crow's Nest in Sydney when I visited years ago. Some of the windows in the apartment were just plastic.
so it is true
That I havenโt seen
australian people are lego people
@clear ferry
Well.. Firefox now runs trou ssh - but I cant type
still a shite experience
only the reload time of an window is aweful
sounds familiar ๐คฃ
I spoke to three builders
Supposedly progressive eco efficient builders
None of them had even heard of a heat recovery ventilator. And none of them did any sort of blower door testing
Moral of the story is, don't build in Australia
@hushed basalt Building in Ireland is fun at the moment. If building your own house, you're held to a FAR higher standard than the developers building large estates of houses.
I'm sure developer lobbyists have not made any donations to political parties
The other fun one is that if you buy an old house and want to basically demolish and rebuild, you're forced to keep at least one wall by the planning permission office. Usually the excuse is so that you're not changing the asthetics of the area...
Which means there has been a lot of accidents with heavy machinery where the wall that had to be kept suffered a mishap.
So easy with a 20tn digger to go a little too far and compromise the structure of the wall
Are you sure you don't have -2 8-bit tabs?
its always nice opening a PR. that's when i get to close like all of the tabs

nice, almost moved all my tradfris to zigbee2mqtt already
just asking me - could I use pfSense as a Router too?
@clear ferry i know this is more of a #zigbee-archived question, but you brought it up... advantages of zigbee2mqtt vs ZHA?
currently running everything on ZHA
@hearty depot i thought that was its schtick
not toutched it yet - Thourght its more of an stateful firewall only
my "worry" is that I cant attatch the AP to it
disadvantage - when your broker gets fu...ed your lights are f.. now too
@hearty depot your question is vague, pfsense is a router and firewall platform already
@scenic radish atleast when I used zha I think it created one mesh per product, zigbee2mqtt meshes across vendors
IDK ๐
interesting. i added a tradfri signal repeater and the other sensors (all of which are not tradfri) seem to be connecting to the repeater
fufu - Not using an actual interface with pfsense - but using the shared one is an... not working idea - But at least I can use all interfaces on the modem
deam have to wait for my 4some NIC from china ๐

Anyone feel like giving advice on where to put a 4-in-1 sensor?
wherever you'd need it? I've got one in my lounge, one under my stairs where my server rack is, another in my bedroom
More like where within a room, think I figured it out though
I typically go for a mid point height wise - temp and humidity are different at different heights, and I put it at a neutral airflow spot
anyone know if it's possible to have a neutral at the light bulbs itself but no neutral back in the receptacle?
I have only white, black, ground at my receptacle
but at the light fixture itself I have white joining black, black, white, and ground
so 4 maretts
@brisk furnace yeah, you won't necessarily have a neutral at the switch
yeah seems like the neutral is actually in the light fixture case
in the light fixture receptacle sorry
weird never seen that before, have you ever run the neutral back to your switch @scenic radish ?
Nope. Most of my switches have a neutral in the box
By default it would, otherwise it wouldn't work
could run it down just need to make sure they're on the same circuit

is 3A output okay for raspberry pi? because i saw most of the store online is selling 3A power adapter. wouldn't current higher than 2.5A damage the pi?
No. Generally you can't force current into a device, but it will pull what it needs. Voltage, however...
alright then. might as well get the 3A since i'm gonna install a casing with fan which draw power from the pi. thank you.

Really need to keep those costs under control!
Do you know what's actually generating the $0.51?
@strange vapor @clear ferry why, what's going on over there
@scenic radish Storm Lorenzo is coming to say hello. West Coast of the country is going to take the brunt of it.
Gusts up to 130km/h. We've had worse in the last few years.
oh, that's no good. sorry to hear that

Graphviz based app for generating that?
Yeah, custom component
it's always a custom component

A N G E R Y

And cold?

and... snide?
also why can't i use these cool things
:angryboi: does nothing
๐ฆ
Hello everyone.. I'm new here ๐
Hey Dylan
Hi Klutch
Hey @meager zephyr , you have been here for over 7 minutes now, you are no longer new here
Perfect!
I'm not just new here. I'm super new to Home Assistant, too. I've known about it for a long time, but just recently started researching more and installed!
Moving into my first home in a few weeks. Already planned out a map of where I will be putting my sensors, cameras, and getting data cables run to. What else can I do to prepare my smart home before actually moving in?
Install home assistant and give it a try
Oh, I mean I have HA all set up already. Just wondering if there's anything more I can do in preparation ๐
Oh gotcha
Can't think of anything, looks like you're in good shape
Maybe rename devices to where they'll be when it gets closer to move-in
But that might be temporarily confusing
prepare to be frustrated ๐
I have bandaids ready to label all my bulbs and sensors. Well aware of how frustrating a smart home move can be ๐
One thing is to start thinking of what things or routines do you do every day or often and how to automate those. Some little things can go a long way making life easier, helping with the electric bill or making the whole thing feel very futuristic ๐
Yeah, I have a bunch of automations that I'm going to want to try and set up. Already have the majority of the presence stuff automated, as well as the security stuff.
I guess I could work on sketching out some ideas for Lovelace layouts and structures.
Perhaps even pre-emptively modelling the house up in SweetHome3D so that I can make an interactive floorplan like this: https://aarongodfrey.dev/home automation/creating-a-3d-floorplan-in-home-assistant/
How to create an interactive 3D floorplan in Home Assistant.
Yeah, it was a fucking godsend when I was shopping for houses. 30-45 minutes to quickly build up a plan for the house and easily see whether it would fit all my shit in it.
Would it make sense to rename #frontend-archived to #frontend?
It would probably make it easier for newcomers to figuer out what is what.
Hey y'all
been at my tech job for a while now
finally got paid and such
gotten in the swing of things
Gotten annoyed at how slow things feel at times.
Sometimes people have 40GB of PST Files and the Slow USB Port/HDD can take ten minutes to copy it all.
My coworker keeps shooting down my idea to just bring in an SSD of mine
10 minutes? Oh boy let me tell you about when I pirated Titanic @Doctor_Mod#8420
It took me three days with resume download ๐
Napster on dial-up?
Those were the days. You'd wait for the clock to pass 18:00 when the rates were lower, and then bring out the list you'd made during the day of things to get from or look up at the Internet.
we had a monthly subscription 56k for a while, lol ๐
It was free with ISDN between 24:00 and 06:00 I remember
for us it was half price from 18 to 06 iirc
Was on flatrate dialup plan where between 18:00 and 06:00 there was no extra cost. Dialed up at 18:05, and disconnected at 05:55. Was one of the first peopel thrown off that plan when Esat decided it wasn't economically viable ๐
yohoo
I remember it taking 5 hours to download counterstrike 0.7
That whopping 50Mbytes
Homelab is getting there
Get out of my head Charleeeees
@undone aspen get over here, quick. i hear the mods
also @unreal orbit what's the difference between mod, jedi, and padawan
the color of the name
i get the star wars reference but the rarity colors are backward if mod is the highest
and no one is legendary. shame.
mods have actual discord mod capabilities, padawans get a different color name and nothing else, jedi have the ability to attach images in any channel
jedi might have more perks, but I wouldn't know ๐
tilts his head
It's an arbitrary system. I stopped caring about it ๐คท
yeah im jk lol
use your powers for good
Heh
Hang on I'll post something naughty
all channels are about to be flooded with gifs
The mods giveth, the mods taketh away, be careful ๐
So, yeah. I looked at all those home security systems. Ring.com is the one I considered heavily getting into, and their professional monitoring service is $10/mo, but their unwillingness to allow local non-cloud control over their hardware is annoying me.
yeah most companies don't want to develop a local api is my guess
Yeah? Well I don't want to support that laziness. ๐
It's laziness and $$$. ๐
Mostly $$$
You didn't even upload the image to the channel ๐คฃ
And everyone can upload images to this channel
what a noob
No I was too scared
i'm gonna upload my entire home assistant db right now
Angry @unreal orbit
with .png as the extension instead
HOW DO I DO ANGRYBOI
it doesn't work
:angryboi:
Fun fact, on a $300.000 server you can upload angryboi.png as the server firmware, and it will write it
You aren't a nitro subscriber and you're not in whatever discord server that comes from
I tried once...
Heh
We have printers so old at work that I still see that error message
Even NEW printers still do that.
But have you ever seen LPT1 on fire @unreal orbit ?
@unreal orbit have you ever taken the printer outside and beat the shit out of it with a bat?
Like actually burst into flames? I have not
Happens with the Linux printer driver still I believe, it just means the printer is disconnected these days, but in the old Unix days it was actually because the cable was so big and passing so much current it could literally catch fire
@scenic radish I wish I had
the first paragraph in this is hilarious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lp0_on_fire
"The message did not reliably indicate whether the printer in question was actually on fire."
So a short circuit would throw that message in the unix console
Yes, that is the one
well, i think there's a pretty reliable way to determine if the printer is on fire already...
What I love is their falsified information of ink levels on printers, and not actually sensing, but guestimating entirely.
black is at 9. 9...units.
Dealing with a parallel port printer plugged into a Windows 7 machine needing to run an XP virtual machine to run the DOS programs my company still uses to print reports is the bane of my existence. The shit I've had to do to keep archaic technology functional with modern computers...
lmao wtf
Rofl, im so glad I stopped working with end user and internal it
XP was fire though, ngl
I'm never going back
Ewww Windows?
The most frustrating thing is I can write a program that completely replaces the DOS program with actual good looking reports in like 3 days. But apparently that's not necessary ๐ ๐ซ
Exactly
yes, we've always done it this way because no one wants to move to a better way
everyone is too lazy
"it works" is even worse. "Works" has vastly different meaning depending on the user
lmao
walking to work also "works"
but if you live 40 miles away, driving is better
64km for those who don't use freedom units
yup
I tried to move my company from monitoring with one tool, which doesnโt scale well. To something new. But was declined because of that same reason. Well weโre familiar with this way...
thankfully the company i work for actually embraces change
Mine does too... too a point. But they also want to do it little by little too.
I try to write all of my programs for scale, which takes a bit more time than developing for the very few people that are currently using the software. Trying to explain why it's a good thing to be dynamic is like talking to a brick wall
And so weโre stuck with s salt version dated back into 2015 still....
@unreal orbit same. it honestly takes less time sometimes for me to make it dynamic
instead of haphazardly pasting shit together
And by "scale" I mean corporation-user scale, not general public scale. That's way over my head
i'm also talking about financial reports, not programs
hey everyone
Yeah making things dynamic now will save you hours in the future
exactly
No wave for me ๐ข
quickest question ever (yeah right): would the NUC version of Ubuntu work on any small form-factor PC or is it dedicated in some way?
โฅ
i brought home a Fujitsu Esprimo and I'm planning to migrate my current HASSIO on that
i was wondering if you'd notice that lol
would this image work? https://ubuntu.com/download/iot/intel-nuc-desktop
Ubuntu is an open source software operating system that runs from the desktop, to the cloud, to all your internet connected things.
That's just an installation guide, the OS is not hardware specific
hassio installer should work on any linux distro i believe
Though they do have ARM distros
I run Ubuntu Server on a non-NUC small PC
absolutely no issues as far as the OS goes
yeah, but that seems like a NUC-oriented ubuntu distro
๐คข
just wondering if that's fine on a non-NUC device or if I'd be missing out on drivers
i think i'm much better off getting a normal ubuntu desktop distro
I recommend not installing a desktop distro for a server. It just wastes resources
true that, but this seems like a pretty powerful PC to "waste" it by just running it headless
i could double it as a work pc of sorts
... or maybe i'd better not, least i kill my whole house by messing it up
not a waste. home assistant will be quick
true that
@unreal orbit You know what IS wierd thought.
but i still don't know whether the NUC distro is fine for me though
why are you set on the nuc distro
eh, just following a guide
That problem with monitor.sh I'm having, where it just stops scanning reliably? It happened on BOTH p0w's last night at 12:57, (and the restart fixed it at 1:05)
the seemed more lightweight than regular distros
slap debian on that bitch
Both, simaltaneously just stopping..... That alone is wierdness..
@scenic radish pros? I've got Debian on my VPS and while it's fine, I was wondering whether I should try something new
eh idk. only distro i've ever used is debian so i'm not a good resource for suggestions lol
@undone aspen that is strange. You can check the log to see if there was anything screwy going on around that time
@scenic radish that makes 2 of us then
I like Ubuntu Server, but again that's the only one I'm familiar with
I think people make a bunch of fuss over which distro is best when they all do basically the same thing
exactly lol
especially a headless server
i mean, debian and ubuntu ARE the same thing
it's not like i'm setting up, what was it, fedora?
or whichever unix system uses yum rather than apt-get
@unreal orbit Nothing in kernel logs. And the only thing that showed up in monitor.sh logs was that, confidence just dropped on me while I was home./
My last kernel log is actually Oct 2.
somebody on the forums said that it's not possible to run the hassio installer on debian 10...but i did exactly that a month or two ago when i moved from one SSD to another. anyone know why they might have said that?
Mmmm, Fedora.. ๐
@scenic radish I just installed hassio on Debian 10 on my PI4. ๐
It wasn't perfect, but I did it. Mostly an issue with docker repo.
come to the chat with a question, get more questions!
ok, ubuntu it is, i'm really into too many layers of complications to add another one
when i thought i had somehow mastered HA, ESPHome comes up, then I have to learn some basic electronics, now I need to migrate HA to a totally different server
let's not overdo it!
lmao
i felt the same way when i finally became comfortable with templating
then i tried to do a for loop
ded
just run it on a windows server ๐คท
templating is ALMOST EASY now, lambda.. lambda is where it's at
Windows? I use those all the time to let the light in.
and use oracle for DB
@undone aspen what's your opinion on Windows?
i think i'll stick to whatever has more guides actually
They're transparent. You can see outside (or inside) with them.
i would've gotten a NUC just for the peace of mind but those are expensive
"more guides" != good/up to date guides โ
ok ok, not more
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/absolute-beginners-guide-to-installing-ha-on-intel-nuc-using-docker/98412 this one looked fine to me
Target Audience Hello everyone, this is a first guide Iโm writing which should help people looking to upgrade from a Raspberry Pi to Intel NUC to run their Home Assistant instances. Assumptions At this point, I assume the following You have a fair understanding of how Ho...
but of course i'm still stuck on the pre-requisites paragraph, this one should be the easiest part
ok, will do, but still... why are there so many ubuntu distro?
the server versions lack an intel distro or is it just me (and their absolutely unclear website)?
@unreal orbit Heh, I thought I'd get smart and try to use an ESP32 to do BLE based detection (or at least Bluetooth classic, but the esphome sdk doesn't include classic bluetooth yet), but because most modern smart phones these days randomize the BLE MAC, that didn't work. ;/
@undone aspen they shouldn't randomize it anymore after an initial pairing though
You don't pair them, though.
The idea is not to pair them
^
bluetooth? more like pootooth amirite
sorite
Bluetooth classic, without BLE, works, but when you throw in BLE, that BLE gets randomized.
you can't pair them once the first time and that's it?
Maintaining a bluetooth connection is a totally different animal than scanning for devices
And uses more energy.
It would be a completely different system
the scanner just looks for bluetooth devices in the area
ah, right
Though a paired system is not necessarily a terrible solution for all situations. I've been considering setting something like that up for myself
so yeah, i'm getting the ubuntu server distro, am I fine even if it says amd64 in the filename?
a classic x64 would've been appreciated
and this is why I get my VPSs pre-installed
I'd thought, at one point, that the bluetooth was becoming unruly because of thermal migration, but after checking that, the temperature was pretty sane. 30's-40's.
that's chilly
It's the same thing. amd64 is just what 64 bit processors are called
The other idea I have is to possibly use a different bluetooth adapter on the USB off a pigtail USB adapter.
That MIGHT solve the issue.... Maybe....
Yeah I think I remember something about not all pi zero bluetooth controllers being the same
that might actually work
thanks for the help so far
Yeah.
And that would explain how we have the "same" setup with different results
yeah.
I got a Vilros P0W kit, and a 2017 model P0W (by itself), just recently.
And the exact same results between both of them. heh
At the exact same time, no less. LOL
Now, granted too. I am running Raspbian 10 on both of them as well.
You probably ran 8 or 9.
Now, I just need to find some decent bluetooth USB dongles.
I have a couple old ones actually, that were bluetooth 3.0, might test with those. ๐
Old chinese-made pieces of crap broadcom's but, they work for basic bluetooth. Not so much for audio or distance factoring.
IA64 > AMD64 โค
IA64 will give me overtime for the next 20 years atleast๐
of course this thing has a display port instead of a normal HDMI port
i'm the one lacking a cable though
i really need to step up my cable game
fine, i'll unplug my main monitor, going dark, if you don't hear from me i'm most likely cursing at ubuntu
I have too many cables, I always save, I think I have 30 VGA dsub cables in my drawer
Welp. I found one of my older bluetooth dongles, so I'm trying it out. ๐
guess who's baaaaaack
so, HASSIO up and running
less painful than i imagined, still had issues but ok
how do I migrate my current setup to the new one? would a snapshot do it?
i'd like to prevent as much reconfiguration as possible so users, integrations, addons, whatever can be brought over, I'm in
@serene isle #330990055533576204
Heh. Is 100 meters for bluetooth in a micro bluetooth dongle even realistic?
CSI:Cyber taught me that you can create a scoped Bluetooth "Rifle" to snipe files off phones..... So 100m sounds legit!!
@strange vapor did you try to ping 192.345.542.1 with a visual basic frontend running on a JavaScript console?
unifi has been fired from my home and all of my families home networks
@clear ferry Yes. It didn't work.
im tired of their broken shit
is unifi really that bad? i was thinking of switching from my google wifi router
trigger:
platform: state
entity_id: router.router
from: google_wifi
to: ?
can someone help me figure out what to should be?
I run Linksys mesh AP's in bridge mode, quite happy with price for value
But I have 25 enterprise access points in boxes in my garage also ๐คท
i'll take one, thx
EU frequency
Or I would have sent you one
Don't wanna be banned from entering the US
Pfsense for routing, firewall and VPN duties though
i am mostly happy with my google wifi router
i do like the app
but i also got it before i got into home assistant, so i realize there's definitely better options out there
I have a raspberry pi 3+ sitting around. Is this device good enough to run homeassistant on for the time being? I'm a noob to homeassistant and want to learn on this device before inventing in something bigger. I just want to run a few devices in my home.
absolutely, been running it on my 3B+ for 10 months
#330944238910963714 would be the place to ask though ๐
hey guys
@scenic radish awesome glad to hear
@clever mortar thanks for the heads up
cm
200 x 60 wins by 750 square whatever units that is
Depends on what you're putting on that desk, and the space it's going in
the thing is that I could use that +50 cm
Then WTF are you asking for?
lol
Hey, should I get this thing that does exactly what I want, or that other thing that doesn't
lmaooooo
other thing!
you know if you could have just waited for a few more seconds
without yelling
you would know more about it
No yelling here - just wondering why the heck you're asking
okay
@past idol but really though, 200x60 is more area than 150x75
if that makes any difference
I want 200x80, stupid IKEA have wierd measures..
more depth is good if you want more space for a keyboard and monitor to be in line with each other I suppose
@light trout what's wrong with 200x60?
Too narrow
for starters it 20cm less then what I want?
why is it a weird size i mean
200x80 is Nice
i'm in the US so i don't know what typical dimensions would be in cm
No place for monitor stand + keyboard + room to acutally use that keyboard
gotcha
wut
2.5 cm to the inch
But, for a single device + normal monitor, 100 cm is fine in my experience
It's friday night, math is out the window ๐
ah gotcha. i knew the conversion, i just don't know if expectations for desk size differ in the US vs elsewhere
My office desk at home is about 150 cm, and that has a monitor, bunch of crap, and usually personal and work laptop, phone, lamp and stuff
It's fine size wise, and would be better if I cleared the crap off it
every horizontal surface in my game room is covered with random shit i should probably throw away
except the entertainment center itself
@scenic radish - The thing is that I am looking at IKEA items. And this is the two size. 200 cm length would be awesome, by my monitor takes up quite a bit of space. The thing is I am kind of afraid that it would be too close with the 60cm width. I mean 15cm is a lot. And also I need to put a supporting element in the middle of the 200cm and that interferes with my foot stand
sounds like 150x75 it is
and that is why I asked, as I wonder if anyone has 60cm and thinks it is fine
makes sense
My desk is 60cm deep, it's fine
The previous one was 50cm deep, that too was fine ๐คท
if 150 is too small, you can always add https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/alex-drawer-unit-white-10192824/
So much of this is personal preference
that's a good idea
or another 150x75 desk at a right angle to the first one
(not serious but also might work if you're rolling in dough)
@scenic radish @light trout thanks
@clever mortar yes, and no
as not every monitor has large stand like this one
it takes up quite a bit of space
and also depends on the size
we didn't know that though
How about you start by telling us all these little details that matter
Rather than going X or Y
๐ฟ
