did trafdri ever release their blinds?
@quartz ether haven't seen that around since the early 90s either...
@amber bramble they are in stores now, so yes 🤣
Curtains?
Pull string ones
There is really only 3 kinds... motorised, string and manual pull each curtain to the center
norwegians just put their curtains up, we don't move them about 🤷
You don't open and close curtains?
no
Wtf do you do when you go to sleep?
not since the 90s 🤣
Cause you can’t see through the fucking ice anyway
we have windows that light comes through when the sun starts shining ?
But what if you don't want the light to shine through so you can sleep in
It’s daylight for 40 days straight
in northern norway we usually have the curtains closed from may to august, because of the midnight sun, the rest of the year, and the rest of the country they are just open 24\7
Lol
I used to hang thick duvet covers on my windows in summer when I was a kid
to be able to sleep
Spend hundreds to move the curtains twice a year
Makes sense
just hung there for three months
Why do people live there again
My curtains are almost black out cause I work nights therfore sleep during the day
because we like snow, and tax rebates
my bedroom curtains are closed 24\7, all other are open 24\7 in the south of norway
Don’t lie
I NEVER LIE
Does the king of Norway force you to stay
yes, he's a bit of a weirdo
hang on I'll grab you a good video
damnit, I only find serious videos
You forgot her second surname 🤣
Princess Martha oh that’s good
It's really Märtha
That’s just a fancy a
It's actually closer to a Æ
Assuming a native English speaker knows anything about linguistics is not smart
Haakon is an evil name if I heard one
That guy is gonna challenge the throne
Classic evil king name maybe
Harald I know
Oddvard fucking Nilsen
Siri Frost Sterri
This guy has one of the weirdest names ever
and he is part of the norwegian language council
Not gonna lie, from here it’s about the same
Why don’t you just call everyone Bruce
I have a finnish origining name, so I always have to pronounce it when I check into receptions
my last name means "otter" in polish and russian lol
maybe i descended from otters or something
or i'm actual otterkin instead of those pretend furries
Otter is pronounced the same as åtter in norwegian, which means the eight as in I just pulled an åtter out of the deck
i don't understand
Anyone of the folks here using any kind of Kube and willing to help out a bit?
@clear ferry could you learn Kube tonight and teach me tmrw? 😄
like I have time for that, I'm learning three other things right now, I have the cold and I'm updating a full VDI enviroment while I am prepping for a workshop and waiting for a call from a competing company 🤣
ask me next week
I heard updating VDI's is as simple as just plugging all connections off 😛
sure, when you are updating the actual VDIs themselves, not the hosts in a cluster that is 90% full 🤣
Nono you have to use the host and plug all physical cable connections 😛

Verdamte schweinhund
9⃣ 9⃣ 9⃣
now that is interesting, linkedin tells me the people who look me up on linkedin are all in competing companies 🤣
Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Purity and Dustin, last two are norwegian companies
What did you expect? Your own company caring about you? LOL there is only one time the company interests for you, when you have your interview 😄
I already told my manager that I am looking around, she said she will counter any offer 🤣
we'll see
But I didn't know people were looking at me 🤔
Ouch... that would be a great offer... I once had an offer of 78k€ but about 200km away so I declined
that is roughly what I have now, without extras
man salaries in europe suck
i really wish they were better, i'd move in an instant
@clear ferry how many years of experience for about 80k?

@clear ferry she might counter any offer, but she knows that your loyalty to the company is gone, so she might fire you soon after...
not saying it's wrong to look around (of course it's not), just a warning
Difficult to fire people in Norway unfortunatly
But i agree with the loyalty part. Personally i never counter if people tell me they got another offer from a competitor. Better to let them leave.
i'm going fuckin insane
my network shows three online yeelights
i can ping all of them
but i only know the physical location of two
seeing your avatar next to "i'm going fuckin insane" made me legit lol
@vast dove only way to get raises in American companies 😛
@scenic radish she also knows that I have five open offers at our biggest customers that I haven't taken
No, I enjoy basic healthcare and 40 weeks paternity leave 😂
Lol true
But with 10 years experience you can make 150K in tech
More if you can get lucky
I make close to that with overtime though 🤷
Overtime? That's nice!
I wouldn't mind living in Europe to be honest. Just can't get away from these tech salaries lol. Hopefully we can retire in the next 5-10 years and move somewhere else.
Bet cost of living is higher in US compared to Norway based on salaries
Our social benefits are also worth something
Cost of living is pretty decent
I own my own house, it costs me $820 per month 🤷
Social benefits definitely way better in Europe. That's kinda why I'd like to move there especially when retired
820/mo for what?
Mortgage?
Yes, 2700sqft
That's pretty decent
It's about what you can expect here too
My mortgage is 1500 and I'm in a 3500 sq ft house
The medical benefits and other social stuff is what I'm really envious about
We have insurance through my wife's work and it's okay but you're still looking at like 300/mo + 1500 deductible
And that's considered "decent" here. It's crazy
add a kid and it gets worse
Hello everyone, I'm looking for someone to edit a 3D STl file. I would like to modify a sonoff basic switch desing to add a PIR sensor and a temperature / humidity sensor
I found a switch model that I like but after several hours in fusion 360 I can not do anything ... Someone would like to help me?
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61b2YY21p8L._SX466_.jpg
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2820884
Costs me $15 to see the doctor, and if I need a specialist and surgery I pay up to $250 total, everything else is covered by the state
Man that's nice
For the whole year, so if I need five specialists and five surgeries I still only pay 250
Until we retire and move I'll live vicariously through /r/expat lol
That's how it should be. We have stupid social security here and it's so dumb. We shouldn't be guaranteeing people's retirement we should be guaranteeing their health.
But it'll never happen here. Insurance lobby is way too powerful
"guaranteeing" though. SS was originally a scam that was never supposed to pay out
For sure...my dad collects it right now and it's like 700/mo. It's pathetic. I bet he's easily give that up for good health insurance though
Sorry....healthCARE
@clear ferry ah that changes things a bit
I love Amazon primes definition of two day shipping
Order something 10.30pm Sunday, dispatched Tuesday, arrives Thursday.
it is typically calculated from the time it ships
did it actually ship from amazon?
They give you a delivery date before you order it at least
yeah normally if amazon has it in one of their distribution centers its next day for me.
Anyone here know much about the NZ/AU standards and if the Shelly (https://shelly.cloud) is legally allowed to be installed in walls
maybe if you put them in upside-down?
heh
if it's anything like the US, anything low voltage (ethernet, video cable, etc) is ok
they're a lot more strict over there
I know low voltage is fine here also. But Shelly's go in line on 240v feed. So need to make sure it is legal cause otherwise no insurance even if it isnt the cause for damage insurance company can say no to entire claim
otherwise if it's mains powered it specifically has to be electrical cable, oftentimes in conduit
in the US it'd probably be ok if it's in an electrical box with a blank cover plate
but not helpful for u
oh yeah, it definitely needs to be in an accessible junction box here
NZ doesn't require conduit. The Shelly would have to go into a junction box of some kind (but plenty of room behind most plugs anyway) but its more it doesn't have the RCM tick thing that most nz items need but often other country ones are effective replacements
oh i see
some local codes here require conduit which is stupid, because romex is designed to go behind walls by itself...
of course, this is chicago and its suburbs we're talking about here, so i'm sure it's has something to do with some politician making money
or their history with disastrous fires
lol
directly responsible for exterior doors opening outward and spinning doors requiring standard doors flanking them
or, in the case of home assistant, chicago 0.2
at least the checkers won
there's that at least
I should probably support some team in NY or NJ as I have a lot of family there 😛
which sport are we talking
ah
So anyone using Kube?
k8s?
i think a few sick bastards are but i don't know any directly
maybe #449717345808547842 for more
Well that's rather related to HA itself tho
eh, true
But thx 😛
i guess it depends on if you're talking kube directly or HA in kube
Kube directly.. I still figure the workflow and was looking for some insight
at the day job i work on a contanerized platform and have taken a kube class. We didn't see any real reason to switch off of swarm though
My company totally declined Swarm because it was completely unreliable and we use K8s for a customer and now slimmed that down to K3s for a another customer.
we have a need to deploy the product on a single system and have the ability to scale it out to 3x+
in that situation, we felt that the extra overhead required for kube wasn't worth it
there are a few features that would be "nice" but nothing that stood out as "need to have"
for our use-cases at least
if we were running a fully SaaS platform it would make more sense there
Sultans of swing is highly overrated, Tunnel of love is the real dire straits masterpiece, especially live
i like the frog leap studios cover
Woot
I've only listened to their first album and Brothers in Arms
first one is pretty average, Brothers in Arms is gold

my pedalboard is a mess as I haven't repositioned things since my last purchase properly
just everywhere
but one sec
few pedals floating
new pedal is top left
All my pedals are on my workbench, I was supposed to make a custom pedalboard, but haven't gotten around to it yet
I just made this from an ikea shelf
I'm just making noises like a dickhead with half my pedals on, its been a hwile
I had a Strymon Timeline but I sold it ages ago
I have the elelady too, great for animals album sound
I have TC electronic flashback and reverb, can recommend those highly
I had the flashback, I sold it when I got the timeline lol
but in a way I prefer a simpler pedal
The metal muff is also great
so the flashback was good
I have the mini, want to replace it with the bigger one
haha
I have been halfway through making a modified fuzz face pedal for quite some time
I've built a few different ones
got distracted and never though about it
😂
The joyo pedals are very good for their price point, ordered a few from wish actually
I've not got any joyos but i have a bunch of chinese similar stuff
like the mooers you saw
the blue pedal is a caline pure sky (timmy clone)
the red pedal next to my tuner is a Biyang Baby Boom Compressor (Dynacomp)
welp, that's set it for tonight, I know what I'm doing... remembering to set up the automation for my hot water system. I've been manually controlling it like a numpty, but forgot to day
I was going to get around to make a loop board like David Gilmour has in his live show, like a split signal going to a almost infinite delay via a volume pedal, is very handy for playing by myself
ah like the sound on sound stuff, nice
@icy chasm that is another thing Norwegians don't understand, we have the boiler on 24/7
I imitate gilmour a lot when I started playing but nothing in a long time
a) I live in a place that never gets below like 10 degrees c b) I have solar 🙂
never below 10, thats heaven
Aussies turn off their heaters right?
I've got reverse cycle aircon but that's only because it was only like $50 more for the heater version over the cool-only
Ah yeah, nice weather there
I think I've been twice
I'd consider moving if I could get a job, and if it wasn't for all the Queenslanders
lemme guess, you're from Sydney

How fucking dare you
Well then, Melbourne it is
aw shit, it's either Canberra (heh, fed) or Deadalaide
I'm actually married to Australian girl
The former, bingo
poor girl
I don't mind Canberra, for a visit. Too dry
it is quite dry, thats true
I get too dry here, when it's like 60% humidity all the time
I will say its a very easy place to live though, barely any traffic, but shit all happens lol
but thats okay for me
oh yeah then canberra would kill you long term
Move to northern Norway
haha
Snow 9 months a year
Move to SE Asia, thats humid
I visited Cairns last year, I gotta say its one of my favourite places I have been to in the country
I was born there, haven't really been back
So humid that you get crotchrot by stepping out of the plane
Just so chill and warm, roads were never busy and well kept, wifi everywhere lol
lots of attactions
no idea what its like for residents
We went in winter and swam in the lagoon on the esplanade and the locals heckled us cause it was apparently too cold
I'd say my opinion but I try not to disparage our natives too heavily in public
Woah I created my first Kube-Pod from a docker compose and it starts up... I just have no idea what to do now
@boreal pewter posted a message that is too long, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/DyFJgN7PcT/
”Yay! They’re finally done waxing the office floor. Finally some peace and... <squeak> <squeak> <squeak> <squeak>” headdesk
@clear ferry my Norwegian friend says that pretty much all their schools are state
Is that true
probably, it usually is the case in the Nordic countries
@hushed basalt yes, if a school is private it is probably posh and I know of like... 5 private oned
Our system is pretty corrupt
Private schools get heaps of state money
Run into scenarios where private schools are buying slow motion underwater cameras for their swimming pool, while public schools can't afford pencils
Yay for cronyism
Mostly everything in the Scandinavian countries is state owned and funded
We used to be like that
Until the 'conservatives' 'sold' everything off for 'surplus'
Der sold 'er jerbs
I'm suspicious.... Upgraded to 0.99 and nothign has broken....
slow motion underwater cameras
Why would they want to track the Centre for Veterinary Education? 😜
(First google result, second was what you probably meant, Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures).
I guess if someone doesn't know CVE the question is not pointed at him 😛
@hearty depot Have been placing with vuls
Seems to work quite well, and unlike some commercial products actually understands that RHEL and Centos backport fixes without changing version numbers.
Agentless Vulnerability Scanner for Linux/FreeBSD
almost forgot you tom 😉
CVE-2019-16759
https://www.zdnet.com/article/anonymous-researcher-drops-vbulletin-zero-day-impacting-tens-of-thousands-of-sites/
That thing looks amazing - thanks ndonegan
@strange vapor Nice, I need to test it out !
Anyone use Vivint? You integrate with HA at all? I am thinking of switching to SimpleSafe as i see a actual component for that but i would have to change 8 door sensors, 6 motion detector and a couple glass break sensors.
#330944238910963714 would answer that one 😉
Yeah i though about posting it in there but didnt want to clog the support channel with general questions not directly needing actual support
just a warning with simplisafe...you can't use the simplisafe app at all unless you pay $25/month
Oh wow thanks for the warning
but the hardware looks nice and communication between the sensors and the base station is (finally) encrypted with the current version
it wasn't encrypted before the current gen...which seems like a dumb oversight
Oh yeah for sure. That would have been a concern for me. I havnt done a ton of research on simplisafe just saw it integrates better than Vivint as i am not aware of any Vivint integration
I also thought about trying to grab the door sensor as they are the standard 2gig 315mhz sensors
but i do like the external monitoring to call police if something happens
also to clarify, the $25/month gets you professional monitoring along with app access. $15/month for professional monitoring only
i went with a different system that's free to self-monitor using their app since i don't want professional monitoring
Yeah i dont care a lot but i travel for work and the professional monitoring makes me feel better for my wife and kid .
understandable
I pay $30 right now so the $25 is not that bad to me
Just the initial cost of switching all the hardware is hard to swallow.
in my case i figure if anyone did break in (which would be dumb because i'm in a condo with 11 other neighbors in close proximity), the alarm would scare them off before police would even be notified
yeah that definitely sucks
Yeah true. I live in the country on 15 acres so the closest house is not that close. I live in a great area though so not overly worried but piece of mind is nice.
Yep back in the day i was i am doing it all myself and DIY everything
I like the flexibility though where you can choose your path.
for sure
and integrate both DIY and commercial solutions
yeah it's great. i'm impressed by how much stuff i can integrate into home assistant
the best part is everything is locally controlled except for my security system
but once homekit drops for it, that will also be locally controlled

Yeah i love the local executions. I had SmartThings and hated how limited it was and that it would go down all the time
I tried openhab but found HA and never looked back
yup. huge learning curve, but totally worth it.
I am an software engineer so it wasnt too bad for me.
lol
but i got the hang of YAML and JSON pretty quickly. not that those are programming languages though
i've also got decent templating knowledge now too
right but once you understand the process most other languages become easier.
Lovelace makes HA pretty easy for the masses
i sort of see a similarity between python and yaml as far as syntax
both being spacing dependent at least
Yeah i was going to say that would be about it though. Python you have declarations and executions. Yaml is, well just yaml. Things like python parse yaml
yeah
i just mean it might make tackling python as my first programming language a bit easier
But yes most languages spaces are ignored as it is too loose.
or in yaml the matter a ton
yeah i can see the cons of being spacing dependent
but i can also type yaml faster than json
Python is a good language to learn for this iot space
so many damn quotes and braces in json
json i am partial to but i started as a javascript ui dev
I like the structure, lol
yaml looks like a mess to me
but with todays ide's just about any language becomes easier with code completion
i do find it interesting that home assistant uses yaml instead of json though
Yeah me too.
i guess they leaned toward the human readability side of yaml
at least, that's what the yaml specs claim the advantage is
subjective probably
evidenced by you saying yaml looks like a mess to you lol
yeah the text makes it easy to read except how do you read 6 spaces when you needed 8 or 4. Makes debugging harder i think
That is the hardest part about HA to me. I never know what needs to be nested and what doesnt. But that comes down to understanding what HA is looking for when it parses.
the configurator addon makes it easy to see spaces at least
yeah, it definitely takes some research beforehand and careful attention after
Yeah i suppose i should try that.
I use Atom or Sublime to modify my files manually.
I use the automation in lovelace to add the entry then open it manually to add actions and conditions
can't recommend the configurator addon enough
i've never used the automations ui, i've only ever written them entirely in yaml
helped me understand the syntax a lot
99% of getting spacing right is to use the examples in the docs as a guide
oh no tinkerer found us
i came here to edit yaml and chew gum... and i'm all out of gum
Yeah i have copy and paste a lot of examples
but it never fails i always want to do more or something slightly different
that is when i run into issues. Easily resolved, just check the config and make changes until it works
only thing i don't like about the examples is how they nest lists. most nest like this:
trigger:
- platform: state
but i prefer this:
trigger:
- platform: state
maybe i'm just an animal
i understand why they're nested like the first example though
jk, my lovelace config is riddled with inconsistency in that regard
I think the second is the more technically correct version
the fact that both work has got to be confusing for beginners lol
And yes, mine are far from consistent too
i can see how both are correct though
I think you could make an argument for either. Depends on where you personally define the "beginning" of the block. At the - or at the start of the key
exactly
screw it, i'm just gonna start using one space for everything
since the spaces don't matter as long as you're consistent
fite me
Technically correct, but it will make me like you less 😉
Why stop at 8? 20 spaces is what real men use
you may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like
i should post some examples using one space to see if anyone tells me the spacing is wrong lol
post a working automation using one space "guys i can't get this to work"
jk obvi
@clever mortar are you Jeremy from marketing?
That may be one of my meat puppets, yes
well now i'm confused
No testing of anything ever goes as planned, unless you've just finished the thing you're testing, and not always even then...
More seriously, I live nowhere near Dallas
😉 that's what I would say too
we got him, boys
@unreal orbit 20 spaces? Gotta up those numbers, those are rookie numbers, 20 TABS
oh man now the tabs vs spaces war.
Brb ctrl+alt+sysrq
oh man that reminds me of the old keyboard that had meta hyper and ultra keys, in addition to ctrl and shift, and alt
from a lisp machine.
was great for running emacs
hi, is there a good video out there that gets me up and running a mqtt server?
I still have nightmares about the tiki100 keyboard that had f1-f32 keys
😛
sure but i cant connect my mqtt client to it. dont know why
Well, then, what MQTT server
identify issue, fix issue, use it
Also, likely off topic here 😉
mosqitto
And... how
carefully
👍
Are you using a #330990055533576204 add-on, a manual install with apt, or yum or 🔨
sudo hammer install mosquitto? 🤔
I now have a new alias to set up
Then #330990055533576204
And please read the channel topics
Do you have plex?
I do
Yeah the new NAS have hardware transcoding
was not looking at it for plex but that is nice
I dont personally use one as i have a custom built server to host plex, HA, node.js, nginx, apache, etc.
How much storage you looking to have?
Nice
Oh 4tb is tiny. Yeah the synology should do you fine
I just ordered another 20TB for my server
its just for personal use
So is mine, lol
yep $$$$
Storage is not cheap. At least in perspective. It is much cheaper per TB now days but still not "cheap"
someone care to look over my ssh_config - not shure if I forgot something
there is somebody freezing
20:05:31 up 2 days, 13 min, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05
💤
Oh wow, Amazon is coming out with Echo glasses and an Echo ring...
And wireless earbuds, but I think I've watched too much Doctor Who to ever trust those
@unreal orbit Hopefully we're in the wrong dimension for the Cybermen.
I do think it was mentioned that they eventually arise in every dimension though :/
About to buy a new TV
Anyone have any sick picks in the 65 inch range
I'm thinking Samsung Q60 qled
all the oleds are basically the same afaik (same panel)
are you sure about that phnx? At least a while ago even the Sony ones were just LG panels
yeah, they make their own now
interesting, guess I'll have to read about those when I have some time later. Competition never hurts
dell/alienware definitely use LG panels though
i know the oled panels that lg made for some phones were particularly bad
i had a pixel xl 2 for a while but returned it because the screen had a grainy appearance, almost like it was paper... the samsung panel used in the OG pixel xl is much better
"a characteristic of the display" according to google
those were AMOLED though which are different
QLEDs looked nice in store telco but like, you will see that lol
they're considered the benchmark for OLED TVs though
Not sure I'd be ready to buy OLED personally, pretty expensive and theres the whole burn in thing
We have a Sony OLED broadcast monitor at work
It was like $5000 for 17" in 2013 or so
But it's quite nice
the black levels are impossible to beat by any backlit panels
for sure, but you can still get decent results with backlit stuff
like QLED does okay I think
I started obsessing over all this stuff when I first started looking, but I realised I can spend less than I spent when I bought my current TV 8 years ago and do much, much better anyway
Ew 2.4ghz only..what is this 2013
I don't really intend to use any streaming to the tv. But still.
yeah its odd
My current TV is from 2006
I don't plan to use the TV for streaming anyway (got an ATV) whats the max speed on 2.4GHz, it'd choke on 4k right?
Local congestion is the big issue
Medium density housing, only three effective 2.4ghz channels, wouldn't be pretty
I use my ATV4K for everything though
yeah
And when I have a house I'll be hard wiring anyway
Did you do what I did - bought a ATV4K for when you get around to getting a 4K tv?
Yeah I am probably gonna run ethernet this weekend to my TV unit
Yeah exactly
I knew a new tv was only a few years away at most
And the $50 difference was neglible
And a new tv would certainly be 4k
yeah thats how I felt. I'd like a new TV within 6 months but there are a lot of costs that come up that keep me putting it off
house shit
and then you think you are gonna save decently one pay and turns out its rego time
Yep lol
i want to upgrade my living room tv and demote the existing one to the master bedroom
we moved house and the tv is too small for the space
its 55" but too far away
yeah mine is 55" and I would like to go up a little, but the next size is 65"
so I'd probably have to wall mount it, which is fine
yeah, i'm already overdue for doing that
probably just give the old one to a family member
gonna wall mount the current one in the mbr and then mount the new large one in the living room
Yeah I did that, demoted the 50 plasma to the second living room and put a 65 on the wall
Still room for a 85 there though, I checked
hehe
We have a 43 in the bedroom, which is enough because it is tiny
I bought this 55 inch when I was young and still lived with my mum, my room was barely big enough to fit a queen bed in and I had the 55 in there
it was...dominating
When you were young you say, two years ago? 😂
Mate I was quarter century two years ago, thats old AF
I remember I bought a 23 inch wide screen crt when I lived in my parents , in.. 2000, it was huuuge
Nah, it was a 28 I'm sure of it now, and yes atleast as deep as wide 😂
haha and heavy as hell
Brought it along to LAN parties, with my 3x23 CRT desktop setup
haha
You can see the desk buckle
thats why you are such a strong man today
I got those in 2004 I think, I still had the 28 inch TV at the time
Replaced it with a projector that was 1mx1m and did 800x600 in 2005
I too do this sometimes
I can't put anything on the wall in a rental :(
But I got the ikea tv cabinet with an inbuilt tv mount
Doesn't fit on my old tv though
Sure you can. That's what plaster is for.
I will anchor the tv cabinet to the wall though. I'll deal with the fallout later I just don't want the tv to topple on my little one
Yeah but they can look at the plaster and go "no we are going to repaint the whole room to match"
Tenancy rights are non existant in AU
fun fact, thy almost always re-paint after every tenant
Ha ha ha ha ha
Not in any house I've ever been in
Just like they change the locks aye haha
Never seen that happen either
ah, houses are different. apartment complexes do it
Leases are typically 12 months here
I'd say less than 0.1% of leases are longer than 12-13 months
its about the same here
are you gonna be able to buy any time soon telco?
Where are you
every apartment i've rented has been re-painted before i've moved in
Nah nothing good in our price range
US
dang
Don't want to buy a house and outgrow it when the second kid comes
yeah for sure, that'd be a pain
Or buy far away from work and spent 3 hours a day commuting
yeah that'd be the worst
WFH FTW
Not making any progress study wise
I haven't even touched my homelab in weeks. So busy
dang
But yeah we really need like $160k cash to get what we want
my closest office is 3h away. Suffice it to say that i've never been there
yep, it takes a bit for sure
My office is roughly 45 minutes away, I'm there once or twice a month, for signing of documents mostly and nagging my bosses
the rest is work from home or at customer sites, in varying degrees
is it some kind of WW holiday ? 🤔 it's quiet like death in here 🤔
IBM GPFS ? 🤔
@wet pilot, I checked a review and it seems like even the Sony 2019 Oleds are still made by LG
phnx is away for 3h 50m 2s with a message :point_right: sudo systemctl suspend
For a 55" I wouldn't think of anything but an oled, but the 65" models are pretty expensive still. My brother has one of those and it is gorgeous to look at. Still a bit on a small side for me though
I'd love to work from home
I hate commuting and working in an office haha
In some ways I'd like to freelance, but that's a completely different style to working remotely
office life is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I do like being able to mix it up
Working at the office with colleagues directly can be good for me
usually it just ends up with eating cookies and not getting any work done
Slow Burning in a Dancing Room
So... if i change out my USB hubs, do i need to reboot to get the pi to recognize the new one or just restart the docker container? 🤔 Experimentation time!
🤔
i dont think it should change the by serial id, but... openzwave isn't able to init the zwave controller im trying to get to =/
OS can see it though... rebooting sorted it 😄
@orchid rose huh, ok
is it odd that /dev/serial/by-id doesn't exist on my system right now? https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/cRVzS7xbSf/ Couldn't open device lsusb can see the stick, but can't open it. Any ideas as to why?
Yo phnx, got ffmpeg video to work.
discord chatter is light today
yes.
Just dont sudo 😄 😄 😄
You could find a log output of it, parse it to Fail2Ban and put a 10 hours ban on it. That will just protect you from breaking things
like forever
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/sbin/nologin
You wrote /bin/bash wrong
uh
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/rm -r /
time to spin up an vm and check if this would work 🤣
dont know if you now it already but there is a typing mistake https://www.home-assistant.io/getting-started/configuration/ line 15. just wanted to let you know 😄
can i?
there is a edit button
you could be so cind and make use of it
fixed it
you need the reverse proxy to be up even when you are on your home network?
ah okay
I can just direct IP at home, I have no idea how people normally set it up though
I need fully qualified domain names to use https, plus I can use the same address no matter where I am in the world
Including home
Fun thing about smart lights
Almost all of them turn on when power is restored
Fantastic for 2am restoratiobs
haha
I turned off the lights at the switch before that happened
But it's a trap for young players
It makes sense really, but yeah I can imagine getting caught out
I just want a decent smart switch option here
I'd probably diy myself
Put in smart bulbs and put your own low voltage hardwired switches in next to the real ones
Run them back to a rpi or esp in each room or cluster of rooms
Power those of PoE
No electrician required
thats not a bad idea, but I dont actually have much of a problem with using lights dumb, so if I switch I want it to be 0 compromise, replacement switches that work with any light
Yeah you need an electrician
like, legally
I think Nue Zigbee switches might be your only viable option
$50~ a switch plus install
Plus you need neutral wire
Nah
Just realized theirs a Obihai integration in 0.99
It's up to the builder at the time really
but I hate those Nue switches, I want a physical switch
It's cheaper to not put it in and not needed for standard switches
ah okay
Hence why the diy option can be very cheap in comparision
Plus you can use real switches if you want
Otherwise you need some sort of switching box in the ceiling
And the electrician to redo the wiring etc
I might just wait and see what comes out
I'm in no rush
got other things to do first
Otherwise you need something like a Shelly that's certified for Aus
But you'll probably still need neutral wire and enough space behind the switch
if anyone is looking for great lights for a garage or workspace i highly recommend these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PG3RLH7
just installed them and they're great...super easy to install and bright af
i might buy 4 more and hang up some more
The talk on hass I gave at least months' Sydney Infracoders is finally online:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjZE0I5_LDY&t=2s
Infracoders special - "House Coders" meetup; discussing ways to enable your smart home with DIY Electronics and full security & control over your devices. Re...
cool, will definitely check that out later
Ditto
I almost lost one of my ESPHome yaml files today because I was kind of setting up the device in a hurry.
install git, use git
I accidentally overwrote the file and then cursed myself for not having made a copy of it before. I am quite happy I could recovered it... But damn I need to remind myself to always run a back up when I am working on these things.
I have git installed but I wasn't using it for this particular set of files... I was just being dumb, I guess.
Git git git git git git git
Git gud
Gotto let that git sink in...
I used grep to recover the text, but I am not working without using git anymore... I promise!
That is an awkward title @strange vapor
Does she tell you that she loves you

I've had a guy behind me now for 10 minutes with his indicator light on, he just turned it off when I actually should have used it to indicate leaving the highway
Are you currently driving
Stuff like that means you have so little control over your own situation that you shouldn't be driving, and they should take your licence away
I just stopped to fill gas 😛
@clear ferry I've seen scrolling bill board style things for sale on the likes of Ali Express and friends where you can pre-program a small selection of messages and use a remote control to display message in the rear window 🙂
I have though about the same
But I would only write CUNT there anyway 🤷
Which means my wife would not approve 😂
I was in a group chat once where a woman would send video responses to the group while driving :/
@strange vapor probably illegal in Australia with our nanny state laws
You can be fined for 2km/h over
@hushed basalt Does the Aussie Nanny State still want to break TLS?
Lol
We're a joke
Can't let terorrists and pedophiles take away our freedoms
So let's take away all our freedoms
The conservatives play the terrorists card for everything
And the ‘opposition’ party wave the legislation through!
@tough igloo wife done with translation yet? 😂
We’re currently in the process of moving house so I’ve given her some time off
What are you like, husband of the year? 😂 🎉 ❤
someone had a play with OpenStack?
What did you have in mind @hearty depot
Pfsense and an Debian VMfor starters
There is of cause the question if this even work
Worth, not a chance. But open stack is a big thing in the environment I work with.
So I try to get some hands on experience while not fucking with production 🤣
@hushed basalt
I love that the podcast has chapters
@clear ferry Podcast Addict supports chapters.
Only time I notice is when I'm in the car and the chapter name comes up in the media system while Podcast Addict is playing.
@hearty depot I would focus on skills that are rare and valuable
That's how you get paid big bucks
So if you think those skills are rare and valuable and on an upward trend I would focus on that
Don't follow your passion. Find passion in being great at what you do
Craftsman mindset
Following your passion is dangerous bad advice
Even people like Steve Jobs who say stuff like follow your passion, are hypocrites
I've followed my passions all along 🤷
Problem is I'm passionate about all technology
Yes, I'm a proper douche 😛
Like, if you thought you would be passionate about philosophy
You got me wrong there - with not worth I mean it's just easier to spin up esxi and run the machines from there ;)
For now I an not even Shure if OpenStack is capable to contribute to my home network and if I can run things on it @hushed basalt
Should I use the time to install ubuntu and dual boot or go on struggle getting debugging on the windows sub linux system-thingy working? I let you guys decide :p (no what linux dist is the best debate please) :p
haha, I guess I should see that coming :p
lol life change; when your 14 the new folder/new folder(1)/newfolder(2)/newfolder(3) and so on was hiding porn, now its lazy backup of development files :p
Just install FreeDOS, get a copy of Doom or Monkey Island, and have some fun!
Manjaro for gaming
meeehh.. when you want to use an GPU you have to friggle around with an extra GPU 😵
aaah I hate my internet at home 40 minutes for a centos download
2 minutes left 🤞
you guys might get a kick out of this... someone posted this to reddit yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/d99k00/migrated_from_pi_to_venv_is_boy_are_things/
doesn't mention what hardware he switched to, so i'm assuming it's still the same hardware...which would net no performance difference
thermostats with Z-wave PLUS radio modules for under $20 on ebay - https://ebay.us/YMEoO7
No idea if it's junk, but for $20 it seemed like a good chance to take
Might want to let #zwave-archived know
Indeed - Wanted to save that channel for hardware help, but I guess it's not a bad idea
For those in the right region anyway 😛
Zwave... More like zzzzzzzwave 🐶
so apparently in order to change your ecobee password, you have to log into the portal and request a password reset link, which is weird. regardless, the link they sent me started with "localhost" instead of "ecobee.com" which is sort of funny
believe it or not, it didn't work
until i changed it to ecobee.com of course
🤦
how do you even make that mistake lmao
Curious. Anyone here have or have had a Honeywell Lyric T5 and/or ecobee lite 3?
i have the ecobee3 lite
I have a T5 now but i think it’s going out.
Wifi issues and failed to turn on the compressor
I also have the localhost 3 lite
installed 3 weeks ago.
Yeah it's been good
yep
Cloud API is...flaky. But I have mine connected to home assistant via HomeKit Controller so it's locally controlled
Not all the functionality is present when connected that way though. No access to comfort settings, home/away mode
Via home kit directly from hass?
But my tstat schedule lives in home assistant so I don't care about that
Look up HomeKit Controller
It allows home assistant to be the host for HomeKit devices instead of an Apple TV or other device
Pretty cool
I mean...not super important for something like a thermostat that isn't transmitting/receiving much data
2.4 would be better for range anyway
Well, considering that, looking at my UniFI controller, and I have 11 devices on one AP, and the utilization goes from 24%-46% constantly, and that's the one that my Thermostat connects to since it's right there in the same hallway.. That can make a difference.
Something I've been having an issue with is my Thermostat disconnecting from WiFi, lately, and so I'm going to be monitoring it more directly and see if that issue continues.
The other issue I had was when I unplugged it from the wall and plugged it back in, let it power back up, and try to turn on the A/C, it took over 30 minutes to actually turn on the outside air compressor unit itself.
And I'm not sure if that's the thermostat issue, or the compressor issue.... Finally it worked when I changed the thermostat all the way up to 90 for 20 seconds, and dialled it back down to 70 to try to kick it on, and it FINALLY turned on the compressor.
Trying to identify if it's my compressor, Thermostat, or what, because the thermostat was able to turn on the air for circulation mode.
I might need an A/C guy to come out again, and I hate those guys.
At the same time, when the T5 lost WiFi, as did the temperature in the house start to climb up from 74 to 77, and when I unplugged it and plugged it back in, the thermostat quickly climbed up to 80 before I finally got it to kick things back up.
remove the tstat from the wall, disconnect the wires from it, and short R and Y together. if your AC turns on without any issues when you do that, you'd know it's probably the thermostat
short R, G, and Y together if the furnace/air handler doesn't turn the fan on automatically when the AC turns on
R and Y, okay. I can try that when it's cooled off better.
Possibly when my roommate's back here, too, so someone can be out by the compressor side as well while I do that.
also to clarify on the second point, do you know if the thermostat was controlling the fan when AC turns on, or is your air handler?
modern furnaces/air handlers generally turn the blower on when Y is energized (AC turns on), but some might be controlled by the tstat
Hmmm, it's the air handler seperately I believe.
Oh, wait the fan ON the A/C unit outside?
the blower inside
That's on the A/C, the air handler has its own.
Mine's very very old. 🙂
Like, I can turn off the A/C entirely and still turn on the fan seperately.
sorry, i think i'm explaining this poorly
That, and I do not entirely understand an A/C system. 🙂
most furnaces will turn the blower on by themselves when the AC turns on
Hmmm... I have a heat pump. for heat, which never gets used. 🙂
some might not. either way, if you short R and Y together and the blower doesn't turn on, add G to the mix
Gotcha.
then substitute furnace for air handler
i just use them interchangeably
sorry for the confusion
Yeah. Here in Florida we don't have much for heaters. hehe
R, Y, and possibly G, is what I needed to know. 🙂
I hear the relay switches inside the T5, so I know it's just passing power through to "turn things on", since the T5 doesn't have ultra quiet relay switches.
But, what it was doing specifically I wasn't really sure. 🙂
And avoid the C line.
And 5 minute delays between tests.
yeah, keep C away from R
otherwise you'll likely blow the fuse on the air handler control panel
You muricans and your strange furnace and vent systems
They are only trouble and it is where the killer gets into the house!
I'd argue the real issue is probably the high number of killers rather than the way they keep their houses warm. 😄
What do you all do for remote ssh access to your home networi
@hushed basalt I have a server directly exposed with key exchange on an obscure port with blacklisting
But usually I do VPN, the SSH one is more for backup
Nice, they are expecting 30cm of snow in several areas of the country this weekend😂
I should give this a run
https://iot-inspector.princeton.edu/
malware to fight malware?
cant say ofc - but just watched BlackMirror S3E3 😛
From IPv6 clients I can SSH direct to the machines.
For everything else I use openvpn on a docker container that lets me VPN in, or apache guacamole if all I have is HTTPS
@clear ferry guac? it's great, runs from a small docker instance or vm, really flexible - add a second factor of auth if you're going to put it on the internet though
Aye, it sounds sweet as Https is usually my only option out
Since for some reason many networks block openvpns default port
are thre 'open printers' ?
my Epson Printer just refuses to do his job because of the blue cardridge 🙈
I've had my last printer for 6 years so far which is a new record I think
HP Envy 4520
I have never had an Epson actually
Usually had canon or hp or Lexmark throughout the years
3rd party ink for the HP?
Tried both third party and original, price difference was so negligible I just stuck with original
ah.. the only minus so far
doesnt have single cardriges
stupid to throw out coulurs when one is empty
Usually the colours deplete equally in my experience
says the software 😉
just got these in the mail
uuh neat - how much are they atm?
these were $15 each
the non-rgb ones are $13
they're great because yeelight provides direct LAN access
So, anyone knows whether next version is gonna be 1.0 or 0.100.0 ? 😄
got 2 not RGB's laying around uninstalled
remember that you dont want to let them call home - otherwise some chinees got LAN access 😉
hahaha - i need an thicker thinfoil heat
eh they already have my fingerprint and multiple copies of my passports
if anything this will build up social credit!
go me!
@midnight adder Ah yeah, yeelights are great 🙂 As long as your have good enough router and wifi to handle many IoT devices, and yeah, pihole can take care of blocking their calling home, VLAN makes sure they cant do that at all 🙂 I should actually make an IoT SSID on my router I guess, been too lazy so far
@midnight adder my only issue with the yeelight is they are bulky
Have two of them, they work fine, but the design is very big
I'll admit to that, they are hefty
makes for great build quality though
@brisk helm I haven't got vlan working (yet) but I have a pihole
my ubiquiti AP takes care of the wifi
which it does really well seeing how I can receive from a block away if I want to
now I can finally get rid of the crappy tuya powerplugs around the house
They are bulky but not much more bulky than Hues
Only lights I haven't smartified yet are flourecent, those will get Shelly's
are they tube or CFL? if they're tube i think they make LED replacements
or just replace the fixture with an LED replacement
I replaced all 12 fixtures last year, they support LEDs but I bought regular ones for now as it was 24 tubes
Just need to add the Shelly to make them smart
gotcha
Because I usually forget to turn them off, which is a pita since they generate a lot of heat 😛
lol
So annoying. Good storm went through last night and knocked out the power for a few hours. Back on but internet isn't still :(. So I'm having to hand toggle stuff ugh
But... You don't you have local control?
Is this you @hearty depot ? https://v.redd.it/dvuy6obldin31
🤣
I need to make something creepy iot stuff for my porch this Halloween
Place a echo dot, and a GH mini there
I can't get the panel to open locally for whatever reason. Even by using IP
some motion sensors to trigger one of those smart speakers to play something
alright, only got a single tuya device left on the network
the crappier french smart plug that somehow is supported by hass
@clear ferry almost - only the smoke from the first second thou
anyone here have experience with tradfri lights and the xiaomi gateway
I just noticed ikea lamps in the mijia app's "add device" list
@clear ferry i ended up setting up a rpi
For my ssh access, I set up a fresh install of raspbian, changed username and created a good password, deleted the pi user, added my public key and disabled password login
Then changed the default ssh port and forwarded that in my router
I need to set up fail2ban though
I'm running Hassio on a Ubuntu machine, and I cannot recall how to find my install location. I want to make a modification of one of the py files to shorten the reset time on a motion sensor, but can't locate the file
I'm feeling rather n00bish asking this.
probably not going to be able to do that in #330990055533576204 <- there for more
my router hates nodemcus... Most of the time the biggest problem with diy stuff is to get these little things to connect to my network 😄
once they connect once, they usually work fine, but the first connection is always an issue for some reason
Never had an issue with that
Heck I haven't had connection issues with wireless stuff since... 2005
I remember I had a flaky 3com wireless router at the time
I blame Netgear
their UI is probably from 2006
😂
set up a wifi hotspot with my phone and no issues whatsoever to connect...
Buy some ubiquity gear. Best thing ive done lately
@orchid rose it's totally the nodeMCU's, just send them to me, I'll put them out of their misery >.>
this is just... I enabled guest network on the same router and it instantly connected just fine
odd
What router is it exactly @orchid rose
Netgear R7800
Hmm the driver for them is ok
