#

I want motorized blinds for my living room but I don't want to shell out $450 per window :/

clear ferry
#

@amber bramble tradfri not an option ?

#

those are cheap af

quartz ether
#

Wrong type if you have curtains

#

The MoveZ ones work with pull string curtains

amber bramble
#

did trafdri ever release their blinds?

clear ferry
#

@quartz ether haven't seen that around since the early 90s either...

#

@amber bramble they are in stores now, so yes 🤣

quartz ether
#

Curtains?

clear ferry
#

Pull string ones

quartz ether
#

There is really only 3 kinds... motorised, string and manual pull each curtain to the center

clear ferry
#

norwegians just put their curtains up, we don't move them about 🤷

quartz ether
#

You don't open and close curtains?

clear ferry
#

no

quartz ether
#

Wtf do you do when you go to sleep?

clear ferry
#

not since the 90s 🤣

ocean mirage
#

Cause you can’t see through the fucking ice anyway

clear ferry
#

we have windows that light comes through when the sun starts shining ?

quartz ether
#

But what if you don't want the light to shine through so you can sleep in

ocean mirage
#

It’s daylight for 40 days straight

clear ferry
#

in northern norway we usually have the curtains closed from may to august, because of the midnight sun, the rest of the year, and the rest of the country they are just open 24\7

ocean mirage
#

How do you sleep then

#

Ah

#

Automate that

quartz ether
#

Lol

clear ferry
#

I used to hang thick duvet covers on my windows in summer when I was a kid

#

to be able to sleep

quartz ether
#

Spend hundreds to move the curtains twice a year

ocean mirage
#

Makes sense

clear ferry
#

just hung there for three months

ocean mirage
#

Why do people live there again

quartz ether
#

My curtains are almost black out cause I work nights therfore sleep during the day

clear ferry
#

because we like snow, and tax rebates

#

my bedroom curtains are closed 24\7, all other are open 24\7 in the south of norway

ocean mirage
#

Don’t lie

clear ferry
#

I NEVER LIE

ocean mirage
#

Does the king of Norway force you to stay

clear ferry
#

yes, he's a bit of a weirdo

#

hang on I'll grab you a good video

#

damnit, I only find serious videos

ocean mirage
#

Lol

#

Norwegian names are pretty entertaining

#

Gro Harlem

clear ferry
#

You forgot her second surname 🤣

ocean mirage
#

Princess Martha oh that’s good

clear ferry
#

It's really Märtha

ocean mirage
#

That’s just a fancy a

clear ferry
#

It's actually closer to a Æ

ocean mirage
#

Assuming a native English speaker knows anything about linguistics is not smart

#

Haakon is an evil name if I heard one

#

That guy is gonna challenge the throne

clear ferry
#

It is a classic kings name in Norway

#

Haakon (or Håkon) and Harald, and Olav

ocean mirage
#

Classic evil king name maybe

#

Harald I know

#

Oddvard fucking Nilsen

#

Siri Frost Sterri

clear ferry
#

This guy has one of the weirdest names ever

#

and he is part of the norwegian language council

ocean mirage
#

Not gonna lie, from here it’s about the same

#

Why don’t you just call everyone Bruce

clear ferry
#

I have a finnish origining name, so I always have to pronounce it when I check into receptions

scenic radish
#

my last name means "otter" in polish and russian lol

#

maybe i descended from otters or something

#

or i'm actual otterkin instead of those pretend furries

clear ferry
#

Otter is pronounced the same as åtter in norwegian, which means the eight as in I just pulled an åtter out of the deck

scenic radish
#

i don't understand

boreal pewter
#

Anyone of the folks here using any kind of Kube and willing to help out a bit?

clear ferry
boreal pewter
#

@clear ferry could you learn Kube tonight and teach me tmrw? 😄

clear ferry
#

like I have time for that, I'm learning three other things right now, I have the cold and I'm updating a full VDI enviroment while I am prepping for a workshop and waiting for a call from a competing company 🤣

#

ask me next week

boreal pewter
#

I heard updating VDI's is as simple as just plugging all connections off 😛

clear ferry
#

sure, when you are updating the actual VDIs themselves, not the hosts in a cluster that is 90% full 🤣

boreal pewter
#

Nono you have to use the host and plug all physical cable connections 😛

clear ferry
#

Verdamte schweinhund

#

9⃣ 9⃣ 9⃣

#

now that is interesting, linkedin tells me the people who look me up on linkedin are all in competing companies 🤣

#

Dell, Fujitsu, Lenovo, Purity and Dustin, last two are norwegian companies

boreal pewter
#

What did you expect? Your own company caring about you? LOL there is only one time the company interests for you, when you have your interview 😄

clear ferry
#

I already told my manager that I am looking around, she said she will counter any offer 🤣

#

we'll see

#

But I didn't know people were looking at me 🤔

boreal pewter
#

Ouch... that would be a great offer... I once had an offer of 78k€ but about 200km away so I declined

clear ferry
#

that is roughly what I have now, without extras

odd mason
#

man salaries in europe suck

#

i really wish they were better, i'd move in an instant

#

@clear ferry how many years of experience for about 80k?

clear ferry
#

10ish

#

Started out at 35

vast dove
scenic radish
#

@clear ferry she might counter any offer, but she knows that your loyalty to the company is gone, so she might fire you soon after...

#

not saying it's wrong to look around (of course it's not), just a warning

vast dove
#

Difficult to fire people in Norway unfortunatly

scenic radish
#

ah, i hadn't considered that

#

my 🅱

vast dove
#

But i agree with the loyalty part. Personally i never counter if people tell me they got another offer from a competitor. Better to let them leave.

midnight adder
#

i'm going fuckin insane

#

my network shows three online yeelights

#

i can ping all of them

#

but i only know the physical location of two

scenic radish
#

seeing your avatar next to "i'm going fuckin insane" made me legit lol

clear ferry
#

@vast dove only way to get raises in American companies 😛

#

@scenic radish she also knows that I have five open offers at our biggest customers that I haven't taken

odd mason
#

Holy crap....move to the states lol

#

That's ridiculous

clear ferry
#

No, I enjoy basic healthcare and 40 weeks paternity leave 😂

odd mason
#

Lol true

#

But with 10 years experience you can make 150K in tech

#

More if you can get lucky

clear ferry
#

I make close to that with overtime though 🤷

odd mason
#

Overtime? That's nice!

#

I wouldn't mind living in Europe to be honest. Just can't get away from these tech salaries lol. Hopefully we can retire in the next 5-10 years and move somewhere else.

vast dove
#

Bet cost of living is higher in US compared to Norway based on salaries

#

Our social benefits are also worth something

odd mason
#

Cost of living is pretty decent

clear ferry
#

I own my own house, it costs me $820 per month 🤷

odd mason
#

Social benefits definitely way better in Europe. That's kinda why I'd like to move there especially when retired

#

820/mo for what?

#

Mortgage?

clear ferry
#

Yes, 2700sqft

odd mason
#

That's pretty decent

#

It's about what you can expect here too

#

My mortgage is 1500 and I'm in a 3500 sq ft house

#

The medical benefits and other social stuff is what I'm really envious about

#

We have insurance through my wife's work and it's okay but you're still looking at like 300/mo + 1500 deductible

#

And that's considered "decent" here. It's crazy

wet pilot
#

add a kid and it gets worse

odd mason
#

We have one

#

That's what we pay for family

past scarab
clear ferry
#

Costs me $15 to see the doctor, and if I need a specialist and surgery I pay up to $250 total, everything else is covered by the state

odd mason
#

Man that's nice

clear ferry
#

For the whole year, so if I need five specialists and five surgeries I still only pay 250

odd mason
#

Until we retire and move I'll live vicariously through /r/expat lol

clear ferry
#

Until next year starts

#

Then it resets

odd mason
#

That's how it should be. We have stupid social security here and it's so dumb. We shouldn't be guaranteeing people's retirement we should be guaranteeing their health.

#

But it'll never happen here. Insurance lobby is way too powerful

wet pilot
#

"guaranteeing" though. SS was originally a scam that was never supposed to pay out

odd mason
#

For sure...my dad collects it right now and it's like 700/mo. It's pathetic. I bet he's easily give that up for good health insurance though

#

Sorry....healthCARE

scenic radish
#

@clear ferry ah that changes things a bit

hushed basalt
#

I love Amazon primes definition of two day shipping

#

Order something 10.30pm Sunday, dispatched Tuesday, arrives Thursday.

wet pilot
#

it is typically calculated from the time it ships

ocean mirage
#

its fairly meaningless then really

#

if they won't ship it quick

wet pilot
#

did it actually ship from amazon?

scenic radish
#

They give you a delivery date before you order it at least

jaunty summit
#

yeah normally if amazon has it in one of their distribution centers its next day for me.

quartz ether
#

Anyone here know much about the NZ/AU standards and if the Shelly (https://shelly.cloud) is legally allowed to be installed in walls

wet pilot
#

maybe if you put them in upside-down?

scenic radish
#

heh

scenic radish
#

if it's anything like the US, anything low voltage (ethernet, video cable, etc) is ok

wet pilot
#

they're a lot more strict over there

quartz ether
#

I know low voltage is fine here also. But Shelly's go in line on 240v feed. So need to make sure it is legal cause otherwise no insurance even if it isnt the cause for damage insurance company can say no to entire claim

scenic radish
#

otherwise if it's mains powered it specifically has to be electrical cable, oftentimes in conduit

#

in the US it'd probably be ok if it's in an electrical box with a blank cover plate

#

but not helpful for u

wet pilot
#

oh yeah, it definitely needs to be in an accessible junction box here

quartz ether
#

NZ doesn't require conduit. The Shelly would have to go into a junction box of some kind (but plenty of room behind most plugs anyway) but its more it doesn't have the RCM tick thing that most nz items need but often other country ones are effective replacements

scenic radish
#

oh i see

#

some local codes here require conduit which is stupid, because romex is designed to go behind walls by itself...

#

of course, this is chicago and its suburbs we're talking about here, so i'm sure it's has something to do with some politician making money

wet pilot
#

or their history with disastrous fires

scenic radish
#

nahhhhhhhhhh lol

#

that was ONE TIME

wet pilot

lol

scenic radish
#

and we made it better after the fire

#

chicago 2.0, if you will

i don't want to talk about it

boreal pewter

So anyone using Kube?

wet pilot

k8s?

boreal pewter
#

K3s, K8s, Minikube.. what ever

#

It all results in kubectl 😄

wet pilot
#

i think a few sick bastards are but i don't know any directly

boreal pewter
#

Well that's rather related to HA itself tho

wet pilot
#

eh, true

boreal pewter
#

But thx 😛

wet pilot
#

i guess it depends on if you're talking kube directly or HA in kube

boreal pewter
#

Kube directly.. I still figure the workflow and was looking for some insight

wet pilot
#

at the day job i work on a contanerized platform and have taken a kube class. We didn't see any real reason to switch off of swarm though

boreal pewter
#

My company totally declined Swarm because it was completely unreliable and we use K8s for a customer and now slimmed that down to K3s for a another customer.

wet pilot
#

we have a need to deploy the product on a single system and have the ability to scale it out to 3x+

#

in that situation, we felt that the extra overhead required for kube wasn't worth it

#

there are a few features that would be "nice" but nothing that stood out as "need to have"

#

for our use-cases at least

#

if we were running a fully SaaS platform it would make more sense there

I've never heard his solo stuff

I got a new pedal today though

ocean mirage

my pedalboard is a mess as I haven't repositioned things since my last purchase properly

just everywhere

#

but one sec

#

few pedals floating

#

new pedal is top left

clear ferry
#

All my pedals are on my workbench, I was supposed to make a custom pedalboard, but haven't gotten around to it yet

ocean mirage
#

I just made this from an ikea shelf

clear ferry
#

Ah Strymon, I love those

#

The big sky is heaven

ocean mirage
#

I'm just making noises like a dickhead with half my pedals on, its been a hwile

#

I had a Strymon Timeline but I sold it ages ago

clear ferry
#

I have the elelady too, great for animals album sound

ocean mirage
#

I don't know that I have learned anything from Animals

#

No Muff on the board atm

clear ferry
#

I have TC electronic flashback and reverb, can recommend those highly

ocean mirage
#

I had the flashback, I sold it when I got the timeline lol

#

but in a way I prefer a simpler pedal

clear ferry
#

The metal muff is also great

ocean mirage
#

so the flashback was good

clear ferry
#

I have the mini, want to replace it with the bigger one

ocean mirage
#

this is my muff clone

#

its for sale

clear ferry
#

Maybe I should build you a custom pedal ThonkEyes

#

The put it on the Barbie

ocean mirage

haha

#

I have been halfway through making a modified fuzz face pedal for quite some time

clear ferry
#

I've built a few different ones

ocean mirage
#

got distracted and never though about it

clear ferry

😂

#

The joyo pedals are very good for their price point, ordered a few from wish actually

ocean mirage
#

I've not got any joyos but i have a bunch of chinese similar stuff

#

like the mooers you saw

#

the blue pedal is a caline pure sky (timmy clone)

#

the red pedal next to my tuner is a Biyang Baby Boom Compressor (Dynacomp)

icy chasm
#

welp, that's set it for tonight, I know what I'm doing... remembering to set up the automation for my hot water system. I've been manually controlling it like a numpty, but forgot to day

clear ferry

I was going to get around to make a loop board like David Gilmour has in his live show, like a split signal going to a almost infinite delay via a volume pedal, is very handy for playing by myself

ocean mirage
#

ah like the sound on sound stuff, nice

clear ferry
#

@icy chasm that is another thing Norwegians don't understand, we have the boiler on 24/7

ocean mirage
#

I imitate gilmour a lot when I started playing but nothing in a long time

icy chasm

a) I live in a place that never gets below like 10 degrees c b) I have solar 🙂

ocean mirage

Aussies turn off their heaters right?

icy chasm

what's a heater

#

😄

ocean mirage
#

uhh yes

#

why would we not

#

my heater is set at 20

icy chasm
#

I've got reverse cycle aircon but that's only because it was only like $50 more for the heater version over the cool-only

ocean mirage
#

yeah thats a good buy for $50, just in case

#

where do you live if I can ask

icy chasm
#

mainly for house value TBH - I needed cooling for sleeping in the daytime

ocean mirage

Well then, Melbourne it is

ocean mirage

Nah I am from somewhere easier to make fun of

aw shit, it's either Canberra (heh, fed) or Deadalaide

clear ferry

I'm actually married to Australian girl

ocean mirage

The former, bingo

Or I was 25 years ago

#

When I was at a children's camp in New Zealand 😛

ocean mirage

poor girl

icy chasm
#

I don't mind Canberra, for a visit. Too dry

ocean mirage
#

it is quite dry, thats true

icy chasm
#

I get too dry here, when it's like 60% humidity all the time

ocean mirage
#

I will say its a very easy place to live though, barely any traffic, but shit all happens lol

#

but thats okay for me

#

oh yeah then canberra would kill you long term

clear ferry
#

Move to northern Norway

ocean mirage
#

haha

clear ferry

Snow 9 months a year

ocean mirage

Move to SE Asia, thats humid

I visited Cairns last year, I gotta say its one of my favourite places I have been to in the country

icy chasm

I was born there, haven't really been back

So humid that you get crotchrot by stepping out of the plane

ocean mirage

Just so chill and warm, roads were never busy and well kept, wifi everywhere lol

lots of attactions

no idea what its like for residents

lyric garden
#

Anyone use Vivint? You integrate with HA at all? I am thinking of switching to SimpleSafe as i see a actual component for that but i would have to change 8 door sensors, 6 motion detector and a couple glass break sensors.

clever mortar
lyric garden
#

Yeah i though about posting it in there but didnt want to clog the support channel with general questions not directly needing actual support

scenic radish
#

just a warning with simplisafe...you can't use the simplisafe app at all unless you pay $25/month

lyric garden
#

Oh wow thanks for the warning

scenic radish
#

but the hardware looks nice and communication between the sensors and the base station is (finally) encrypted with the current version

#

it wasn't encrypted before the current gen...which seems like a dumb oversight

lyric garden
#

Oh yeah for sure. That would have been a concern for me. I havnt done a ton of research on simplisafe just saw it integrates better than Vivint as i am not aware of any Vivint integration

#

I also thought about trying to grab the door sensor as they are the standard 2gig 315mhz sensors

#

but i do like the external monitoring to call police if something happens

scenic radish
#

also to clarify, the $25/month gets you professional monitoring along with app access. $15/month for professional monitoring only

#

i went with a different system that's free to self-monitor using their app since i don't want professional monitoring

lyric garden
#

Yeah i dont care a lot but i travel for work and the professional monitoring makes me feel better for my wife and kid .

scenic radish
#

understandable

lyric garden
#

I pay $30 right now so the $25 is not that bad to me

#

Just the initial cost of switching all the hardware is hard to swallow.

scenic radish
#

in my case i figure if anyone did break in (which would be dumb because i'm in a condo with 11 other neighbors in close proximity), the alarm would scare them off before police would even be notified

#

yeah that definitely sucks

lyric garden
#

Yeah true. I live in the country on 15 acres so the closest house is not that close. I live in a great area though so not overly worried but piece of mind is nice.

scenic radish
#

yeah, i totally get it

#

we just have different use cases

lyric garden
#

Yep back in the day i was i am doing it all myself and DIY everything

#

I like the flexibility though where you can choose your path.

scenic radish
#

for sure

lyric garden
#

and integrate both DIY and commercial solutions

scenic radish
#

yeah it's great. i'm impressed by how much stuff i can integrate into home assistant

#

the best part is everything is locally controlled except for my security system

#

but once homekit drops for it, that will also be locally controlled

lyric garden
#

Yeah i love the local executions. I had SmartThings and hated how limited it was and that it would go down all the time

#

I tried openhab but found HA and never looked back

scenic radish
#

yup. huge learning curve, but totally worth it.

lyric garden
#

I am an software engineer so it wasnt too bad for me.

scenic radish
#

i'm not

#

the only programming language i know is BASIC lol

lyric garden
#

lol

scenic radish
#

but i got the hang of YAML and JSON pretty quickly. not that those are programming languages though

#

i've also got decent templating knowledge now too

lyric garden
#

right but once you understand the process most other languages become easier.

#

Lovelace makes HA pretty easy for the masses

scenic radish
#

i sort of see a similarity between python and yaml as far as syntax

#

both being spacing dependent at least

lyric garden
#

Yeah i was going to say that would be about it though. Python you have declarations and executions. Yaml is, well just yaml. Things like python parse yaml

scenic radish
#

yeah

#

i just mean it might make tackling python as my first programming language a bit easier

lyric garden
#

But yes most languages spaces are ignored as it is too loose.

#

or in yaml the matter a ton

scenic radish
#

yeah i can see the cons of being spacing dependent

#

but i can also type yaml faster than json

lyric garden
#

Python is a good language to learn for this iot space

scenic radish
#

so many damn quotes and braces in json

lyric garden
#

json i am partial to but i started as a javascript ui dev

#

I like the structure, lol

#

yaml looks like a mess to me

#

but with todays ide's just about any language becomes easier with code completion

scenic radish
#

i do find it interesting that home assistant uses yaml instead of json though

lyric garden
#

Yeah me too.

scenic radish
#

i guess they leaned toward the human readability side of yaml

#

at least, that's what the yaml specs claim the advantage is

#

subjective probably

#

evidenced by you saying yaml looks like a mess to you lol

lyric garden
#

yeah the text makes it easy to read except how do you read 6 spaces when you needed 8 or 4. Makes debugging harder i think

#

That is the hardest part about HA to me. I never know what needs to be nested and what doesnt. But that comes down to understanding what HA is looking for when it parses.

scenic radish
#

the configurator addon makes it easy to see spaces at least

#

yeah, it definitely takes some research beforehand and careful attention after

lyric garden
#

Yeah i suppose i should try that.

#

I use Atom or Sublime to modify my files manually.

#

I use the automation in lovelace to add the entry then open it manually to add actions and conditions

scenic radish
#

can't recommend the configurator addon enough

#

i've never used the automations ui, i've only ever written them entirely in yaml

#

helped me understand the syntax a lot

clever mortar
#

99% of getting spacing right is to use the examples in the docs as a guide

scenic radish
#

oh no tinkerer found us

clever mortar
#

1% is running the config check

#

It's ok, I'm all out of gum 😛

scenic radish
#

i came here to edit yaml and chew gum... and i'm all out of gum

lyric garden
#

Yeah i have copy and paste a lot of examples

#

but it never fails i always want to do more or something slightly different

#

that is when i run into issues. Easily resolved, just check the config and make changes until it works

scenic radish
#

only thing i don't like about the examples is how they nest lists. most nest like this:

trigger:
  - platform: state
#

but i prefer this:

trigger:
- platform: state
#

About to buy a new TV

#

Anyone have any sick picks in the 65 inch range

#

I'm thinking Samsung Q60 qled

orchid rose
#

all the oleds are basically the same afaik (same panel)

wet pilot
#

nah, lg and sony make different panels

#

OLED != QLED

orchid rose
#

are you sure about that phnx? At least a while ago even the Sony ones were just LG panels

wet pilot
#

yeah, they make their own now

orchid rose
#

interesting, guess I'll have to read about those when I have some time later. Competition never hurts

wet pilot
#

dell/alienware definitely use LG panels though

scenic radish
#

i know the oled panels that lg made for some phones were particularly bad

#

i had a pixel xl 2 for a while but returned it because the screen had a grainy appearance, almost like it was paper... the samsung panel used in the OG pixel xl is much better

#

"a characteristic of the display" according to google

wet pilot
#

those were AMOLED though which are different

ocean mirage
#

QLEDs looked nice in store telco but like, you will see that lol

wet pilot
#

they're considered the benchmark for OLED TVs though

ocean mirage
#

Not sure I'd be ready to buy OLED personally, pretty expensive and theres the whole burn in thing

wet pilot
#

yeah, that's my worry

#

those black levels though

hushed basalt
#

I quite like the screen in my S10

#

So whatever that technology is, is quite nice

wet pilot
#

AMOLED 🙂

#

samsung has pretty much mastered it

hushed basalt
#

We have a Sony OLED broadcast monitor at work

#

It was like $5000 for 17" in 2013 or so

#

But it's quite nice

wet pilot
#

the black levels are impossible to beat by any backlit panels

ocean mirage
#

for sure, but you can still get decent results with backlit stuff

#

like QLED does okay I think

#

I started obsessing over all this stuff when I first started looking, but I realised I can spend less than I spent when I bought my current TV 8 years ago and do much, much better anyway

hushed basalt
#

Ew 2.4ghz only..what is this 2013

#

I don't really intend to use any streaming to the tv. But still.

ocean mirage
#

yeah its odd

hushed basalt
#

My current TV is from 2006

ocean mirage
#

I don't plan to use the TV for streaming anyway (got an ATV) whats the max speed on 2.4GHz, it'd choke on 4k right?

hushed basalt
#

Local congestion is the big issue

#

Medium density housing, only three effective 2.4ghz channels, wouldn't be pretty

#

I use my ATV4K for everything though

ocean mirage
#

yeah

hushed basalt
#

And when I have a house I'll be hard wiring anyway

ocean mirage
#

Did you do what I did - bought a ATV4K for when you get around to getting a 4K tv?

#

Yeah I am probably gonna run ethernet this weekend to my TV unit

hushed basalt
#

Yeah exactly

#

I knew a new tv was only a few years away at most

#

And the $50 difference was neglible

#

And a new tv would certainly be 4k

ocean mirage
#

yeah thats how I felt. I'd like a new TV within 6 months but there are a lot of costs that come up that keep me putting it off

#

house shit

#

and then you think you are gonna save decently one pay and turns out its rego time

hushed basalt
#

Yep lol

wet pilot
#

i want to upgrade my living room tv and demote the existing one to the master bedroom

#

we moved house and the tv is too small for the space

#

its 55" but too far away

ocean mirage
#

yeah mine is 55" and I would like to go up a little, but the next size is 65"

#

so I'd probably have to wall mount it, which is fine

wet pilot
#

yeah, i'm already overdue for doing that

ocean mirage
#

probably just give the old one to a family member

wet pilot
#

gonna wall mount the current one in the mbr and then mount the new large one in the living room

ocean mirage
#

ah nice

#

I probably have no use for a bedroom tv

clear ferry
#

Yeah I did that, demoted the 50 plasma to the second living room and put a 65 on the wall

#

Still room for a 85 there though, I checked ThonkEyes

ocean mirage
#

hehe

clear ferry
#

We have a 43 in the bedroom, which is enough because it is tiny

ocean mirage
#

I bought this 55 inch when I was young and still lived with my mum, my room was barely big enough to fit a queen bed in and I had the 55 in there

#

it was...dominating

clear ferry
#

When you were young you say, two years ago? 😂

ocean mirage

clear ferry

ocean mirage
#

haha

#

23 inch wide, 30 deep?

clear ferry
#

Nah, it was a 28 I'm sure of it now, and yes atleast as deep as wide 😂

wet pilot

#

Replaced it with a projector that was 1mx1m and did 800x600 in 2005

#

I too do this sometimes

hushed basalt
#

I can't put anything on the wall in a rental :(

#

But I got the ikea tv cabinet with an inbuilt tv mount

#

Doesn't fit on my old tv though

low harness
#

Sure you can. That's what plaster is for.

hushed basalt
#

I will anchor the tv cabinet to the wall though. I'll deal with the fallout later I just don't want the tv to topple on my little one

Yeah but they can look at the plaster and go "no we are going to repaint the whole room to match"

#

hushed basalt
#

I turned off the lights at the switch before that happened

#

But it's a trap for young players

ocean mirage
#

It makes sense really, but yeah I can imagine getting caught out

#

I just want a decent smart switch option here

hushed basalt
#

I'd probably diy myself

#

Put in smart bulbs and put your own low voltage hardwired switches in next to the real ones

#

Run them back to a rpi or esp in each room or cluster of rooms

#

Power those of PoE

#

No electrician required

ocean mirage
#

thats not a bad idea, but I dont actually have much of a problem with using lights dumb, so if I switch I want it to be 0 compromise, replacement switches that work with any light

hushed basalt
#

Yeah you need an electrician

ocean mirage
#

like, legally

hushed basalt
#

I think Nue Zigbee switches might be your only viable option

#

$50~ a switch plus install

#

Plus you need neutral wire

ocean mirage
#

neutral wires have been standard for a while right

#

I can always check

hushed basalt
#

Nah

tiny parcel
#

Just realized theirs a Obihai integration in 0.99

hushed basalt
#

It's up to the builder at the time really

ocean mirage
#

but I hate those Nue switches, I want a physical switch

hushed basalt
#

It's cheaper to not put it in and not needed for standard switches

ocean mirage
#

ah okay

hushed basalt
#

Hence why the diy option can be very cheap in comparision

#

Plus you can use real switches if you want

#

Otherwise you need some sort of switching box in the ceiling

#

And the electrician to redo the wiring etc

ocean mirage
#

I might just wait and see what comes out

#

I'm in no rush

#

got other things to do first

hushed basalt
#

Otherwise you need something like a Shelly that's certified for Aus

#

But you'll probably still need neutral wire and enough space behind the switch

Well, considering that, looking at my UniFI controller, and I have 11 devices on one AP, and the utilization goes from 24%-46% constantly, and that's the one that my Thermostat connects to since it's right there in the same hallway.. That can make a difference.

#

Something I've been having an issue with is my Thermostat disconnecting from WiFi, lately, and so I'm going to be monitoring it more directly and see if that issue continues.

#

The other issue I had was when I unplugged it from the wall and plugged it back in, let it power back up, and try to turn on the A/C, it took over 30 minutes to actually turn on the outside air compressor unit itself.

#

And I'm not sure if that's the thermostat issue, or the compressor issue.... Finally it worked when I changed the thermostat all the way up to 90 for 20 seconds, and dialled it back down to 70 to try to kick it on, and it FINALLY turned on the compressor.

#

Trying to identify if it's my compressor, Thermostat, or what, because the thermostat was able to turn on the air for circulation mode.

#

I might need an A/C guy to come out again, and I hate those guys.

#

At the same time, when the T5 lost WiFi, as did the temperature in the house start to climb up from 74 to 77, and when I unplugged it and plugged it back in, the thermostat quickly climbed up to 80 before I finally got it to kick things back up.

#

remove the tstat from the wall, disconnect the wires from it, and short R and Y together. if your AC turns on without any issues when you do that, you'd know it's probably the thermostat

#

short R, G, and Y together if the furnace/air handler doesn't turn the fan on automatically when the AC turns on

undone aspen
#

R and Y, okay. I can try that when it's cooled off better.

#

Possibly when my roommate's back here, too, so someone can be out by the compressor side as well while I do that.

scenic radish
#

also to clarify on the second point, do you know if the thermostat was controlling the fan when AC turns on, or is your air handler?

#

modern furnaces/air handlers generally turn the blower on when Y is energized (AC turns on), but some might be controlled by the tstat

undone aspen
#

Hmmm, it's the air handler seperately I believe.

#

Oh, wait the fan ON the A/C unit outside?

scenic radish
#

the blower inside

undone aspen
#

That's on the A/C, the air handler has its own.

#

Mine's very very old. 🙂

#

Like, I can turn off the A/C entirely and still turn on the fan seperately.

scenic radish
#

sorry, i think i'm explaining this poorly

undone aspen
#

That, and I do not entirely understand an A/C system. 🙂

scenic radish
#

most furnaces will turn the blower on by themselves when the AC turns on

undone aspen
#

Hmmm... I have a heat pump. for heat, which never gets used. 🙂

scenic radish
#

some might not. either way, if you short R and Y together and the blower doesn't turn on, add G to the mix

undone aspen
#

Gotcha.

scenic radish
#

then substitute furnace for air handler

#

i just use them interchangeably

#

sorry for the confusion

undone aspen
#

Yeah. Here in Florida we don't have much for heaters. hehe

#

R, Y, and possibly G, is what I needed to know. 🙂

#

I hear the relay switches inside the T5, so I know it's just passing power through to "turn things on", since the T5 doesn't have ultra quiet relay switches.

#

But, what it was doing specifically I wasn't really sure. 🙂

#

And avoid the C line.

#

And 5 minute delays between tests.

scenic radish
#

yeah, keep C away from R

#

otherwise you'll likely blow the fuse on the air handler control panel

undone aspen
#

Yep. 🙂

#

Looking at youtube videos on this to thoroughly understand.

You muricans and your strange furnace and vent systems

#

They are only trouble and it is where the killer gets into the house!

icy chasm
#

I'd argue the real issue is probably the high number of killers rather than the way they keep their houses warm. 😄

What do you all do for remote ssh access to your home networi

clear ferry
#

@hushed basalt I have a server directly exposed with key exchange on an obscure port with blacklisting

But usually I do VPN, the SSH one is more for backup

From IPv6 clients I can SSH direct to the machines.
For everything else I use openvpn on a docker container that lets me VPN in, or apache guacamole if all I have is HTTPS

I actually hadn't heard about that before

I need to check it out mindblown

@clear ferry guac? it's great, runs from a small docker instance or vm, really flexible - add a second factor of auth if you're going to put it on the internet though

Aye, it sounds sweet as Https is usually my only option out

Since for some reason many networks block openvpns default port

brisk helm

@midnight adder Ah yeah, yeelights are great 🙂 As long as your have good enough router and wifi to handle many IoT devices, and yeah, pihole can take care of blocking their calling home, VLAN makes sure they cant do that at all 🙂 I should actually make an IoT SSID on my router I guess, been too lazy so far

clear ferry
#

@midnight adder my only issue with the yeelight is they are bulky

#

Have two of them, they work fine, but the design is very big

midnight adder
#

I'll admit to that, they are hefty

#

makes for great build quality though

#

@brisk helm I haven't got vlan working (yet) but I have a pihole

my ubiquiti AP takes care of the wifi

which it does really well seeing how I can receive from a block away if I want to

now I can finally get rid of the crappy tuya powerplugs around the house

They are bulky but not much more bulky than Hues

I replaced all 12 fixtures last year, they support LEDs but I bought regular ones for now as it was 24 tubes

Just need to add the Shelly to make them smart
