Im in an apartment, just have to replace original thermostat when we move
thermostat changes are fairly non-destructive assuming the original was wired intelligently
that's a big assumption though for an apartment
yeah.. the head was simple, but adding in the common was a cast iron bitch
mostly due to trial and error
Most danish homes have water heated radiators, with thermostat valves. Easy to take off and replace with smart thermostats.
in my house, the common wire was not connected on the thermostat and not connected to the HVAC board even though the board had a spot for it
my common wire was not continuous from head to unit
gross
I mean, sure but it only controls the heat so sort of pointless, specially since I don't paid for heat
I just leave it set to 70 when its cold out =p
when I have a home, definitely, specially with the AC
my former thermostat (Nest) saved me an average of $20/month, which paid for itself.
going to give it to my son in law
weird how google decided now of all times to have a single brand for smart home products..
nest leadership ran out of chances to fix the ship so they combined the "home" devision and kept that leadership
yeah, and sacrificed my API
so now, its an ecobee, which I can deal with, either thru their api, or homekit.
Hm... wonder if reddit is being DDoS'd by the same ddos as the one that hit blizzard and... whatever else was recent
ecobee also has room sensors, which is nice
Rip Reddit
"Back to work I guess."
🤦
lol
Wrong channel @glossy mortar
The worst is knowing theres documentation somewhere, but forgetting how to get there
@clear ferry "Damn it Jim, I'm a scientist, not a computer scientist"
Damnit Jim, I'm a doctor not an escalator
Hassos is missing drivers for Bluetooth dongle, how to solve this ?
Should probably ask in #551849179086061570 (I think that would be most relevant?)
#330990055533576204 @upper tinsel @brittle valve
Hassbian is for ... Hassbian 😉
HassOS is the OS used by the #330990055533576204 images
ahhh gotcha!
so for those withings sleep tracker....how accurate would u say it is for detecting sleeping and awake?
Fitbit Inspire HR - pretty good
Fitbit Inspire (no heart monitor) - not terrible
@shy comet I have 2 in use in my home and they are very accurate
Using trough ifttt so there is a small delay
ive been using miband which isnt terrible
thasnk @vast dove
do they do pet detection? 😂
or is my 100 lb dog going to set it off since she sleeps in the bed
I find that the app is better then ifttt. If i just lay in bed for a short time the app does not record that as sleep. However the Ifttt routine will trigger
My SO uses the Fitbit Inspire HR as well and it seems pretty good
You can limit it to certain times so it just triggers the webhook between 9pm and 7am for example
The app counts daytime sleeping as naps
nice, i wonder how all that translates into HA sensors
I wanna try the Motiv Ring, but not really feel like paying the price for it lol
I have not upgraded yet as I’m abroad currently, but i will upgrade early next week and try the new integration
I find both pebble and amazfit bip to be very good at sleep tracking
yea i have a mi band 3 which does all that and im fine wiht it but i want to trigger into HA when i fall asleep
waiting for that 0.99.1 myself, 🤣
My current setup just uses ifttt to switch a input_bool on/off
yea mi fit isnt bad at sleep tracking
So i get a notification if only the wife is home and both bed sensors go off 😛 ahah
Shire.... Baggins
underhill
atxbyea: I've had the bip for about 18 months, love it for accuracy and battery power. Gonna heartbroken when it breaks lol
anyone familiar with old english history?
from around 5th century to 11th century?
I mean anyone who genuinely interested in it, or worked with that period before (researches etc.
My extent of old english history is taking a western civilization class, a world masterpieces class (Beowulf), and taking a Chaucer class (which was middle english)
wait, something happened before today?
When will then be now?
soon
0.99.2 already? Alright, time to update
There is two of them now? This is getting out of hand
O.o

Lol @upper tinsel really doesn't get the channel topic 🤦
Anyone going to Area51 later?
ded
Remember to bring back some nice alien home automation stuff
Like a florbus to monitor the schlap if mormor arrives home without any cragtor detected in the æplårnø
Hue filament bulbs have Bluetooth and ZigBee
At first I thought they were bt only and thought that was a shame
But they appear to have both
€19 isn't bad
Uh then probably not RGBW?
Ah these thingys
Where you you use that? I only have bayonettes in my car.
I was there today and they were finally creating a dedicated tradfri section at my local
Unless you count GU10...
They’re pretty common as light sockets in Australia
yeah most of mine are bayonets
Can you get a screw to bayonet adapter?
They don't fit in most fixtures though
Enclosured fixtures are super common
Unless it's like a bare builders bulb on the ceiling 🤢
yeah looks bulky af
I can barely squeeze in a normal led bulb into mine
Also they're so shit. They're "frosted" glass which just means white paint
So they stop sooo much light and give it a gross green tinge
ah yeah lame
But if I take off the domes it looks a bit povvo
Just use a Tupperware as a diffuser
thats why you just replace the whole fixture, even if you are renting, the landlord wont remember ;)
Plus I'd also have to store like 10 glass bowls somewhere without breaking them or the property manager would charge me like $400 each for the electrician
Landlords are too busy swimming in their cash to notice 😂
But they're all matched sets
We had those lights in a rental property and the glass fell off and smashed. They were so old I had to drive to every lighting store in town to find a replacement. Finally found ones very similar
Yeah this house is like one of 20 identical ones from ten years ago
So builders would of ordered a shipping container full of whatever hardware is cheapest from China
Point source lighting is the devil though
Worst possible way to light a room is to put a small light in the centre of the ceiling
@tough igloo wife dead from translation exhaustion yet?
That's pretty much every room ever
Unless higher end builds. Or usually open plan kitchen lounges now
But in volume builders it's the norm because it's cheap
There's a lot of ways to do it
But little light right above you is equivalent to the sun at high noon
Which is not a comfortable time to be outside.
I'm sitting in a room right now and the glare sucks from the light
Indirect lighting around the edges is a lot nicer
Or soft evenly diffused lighting over a large area
hmmm I might look into options out of curiosity but I can't say it bothers me, I might just be so used to it
A mix is best
@clear ferry I sent her back to Norway to brush up on her fluency!
Bulk illumination, accent and task lights
If you do have a light in the centre you want it to be as large as practically possible though
I wanted to install lights like that on the baby room, at floor level
I like that style of lighting
But getting acrylic cut to size cost a fortune
Or bounce it into the ceiling
I don't like the look of that style of lighting, but it might be different if I were in the room not actively looking at it
Like $600 for a Room
I like drop lights that light the ceiling not the room
hmm that could be cool
something about that strip lighting stuff doesn't do it for me, just looks tacky or something, just personally
they use it all the time on the block
It's labour intensive
And needs the right diffusion or else you get 'spots' where the leds are
ah yeah
Hanging a light that blasts the ceiling is quite effective. Only takes a single fixture change
Then you don't have any diffusers stopping light or changing colour
yeah that does sound cool, I might look at options and examples
It's really hard to find them though
we just have a ceiling fan light in the living room, I could replace that since we never use the fan
I'm not sure if fans are at all useful but I just hate the noise and all that
Fans are hard
Really good fans are great
But they're super expensive and they have to be installed well
Ah yeah, makes sense, these just seem to make noise and shake
If I was building I'd probably just skip the fans and spend that money on better ducting/bulkhead cartridges
Splits are great
I'm not a fan of ducting. Pros and cons. But splits are way way more efficient
And if they're positioned right they double as a fan
Its positioned in a way that it absolutely doesn't but I don't know that I like being blown on directly
we haven't had a summer in this house yet, and we're gonna have to have the bedroom door open with the cooling on on the hotter days, hopefully it works well
It'd be bloody easy to replace if it doesn't cut the mustard
Haven't talked to a single person who found split systems helpful, but that it probably because Norwegian houses are 3-4 floors and they try to get one to cover at least two
I do an automation that lowers the temperature of my AC the closer to bed time it gets, and we keep the bedroom door open to get it in there
I grew up in a 300m² house, then moved into my parents 80m² garage before I moved into a 100m² apartment for vocational school, and then to a 20m² room in Ireland, before I moved up a 50m² apartment in Oslo and bought a 260m² house, but now I want to buy a 400m² house 😂
Never going back to anything below 250 at least
I can't even imagine moving to a smaller place.
I still want to buy a summer cottage in England, just have to wait until brexit makes it affordable
We are in 108m, I could imagine another 50, but after that I don’t know what I’d do with the space
I’m sure that changes once you have it though
Life is like an ideal gas in the respect that it instantaneously fills all available space.
I have 260 and i still have to combine my garage into a music studio and workbench area
Huh
We’ve got three bedrooms between us, an actual bedroom, my study, her study
My study is a studio too
I could use a decent garage or shed but eh, next house
We have two living rooms 4 bedrooms (where two are offices) three bathrooms and storage space and the rest of the normal stuff
We only have that room for storage really, we use the other storage room for hermetics and perishables
I know one single family who has a sauna and don't use it for storage.
They are Finnish!
North of Sweden, but close enough.
Every house in Norway built in the mid 80s of a decent size have a sauna
Same in Sweden. I use mine to store the kids' bath toys.
My parents sauna houses my C64 collection...
I was expecting 20+
good morning
@boreal pewter I wrote that here because its not really on topic for #330944238910963714 ...
And it's forbidden here so 🤷
I just found it funny since it was something HA related the 3rd night in a row from you
Should setup a sensor to keep track
@boreal pewter is just a grumpy fart
🧐

I made a WAF automation.

it catches when her son unlocks the august lock by bluetooth, and announces his arrival, before he gets to the door
If you don't have a wife, you don't have to think about that ;)
no, I'm quite happy with the wife
If she made you type that or are close by, blink twice
heheheh
she's 10 miles away at work
she's sold on the alexa/siri/google voice interfaces...
and the thermostat and lock
and the wifi bulbs
and views this as a harmless hobby for me
Thought people here might be interested in a potential tuya convert 2.0: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/d6tuog/tuya_convert_20_is_here_for_the_most_part/

Finally might get to try and flash my tuya devices
Per rules, stopping by to introduce my self.
Hi, i'm Tek,
I work as a computer tech, a little about my background.
I graduated from a technical school for computer information technology and spent 3 years in the Army Reserves as a Signal Support System Specialist. I've been out for a little over two years working as a computer tech for an advanced micro-electronics organization in the civilian field.
I'm very green with HA. I just finished setting up a 12u swing open network rack last night. I'm hoping to get my ecosystem switched from GA and SM over to HA.
welcome @hexed topaz
bury me...with my raspberry pi...
Last night, was absolutely hilarious. I'd setup a prank for my roommate with a custom Alexa TTS service trigger that I manually triggered while watching the camera to see what he would do. As he headed through the living room down the hall it started. "Hello human. Mike, right?" that's when he stopped and backed up and looked at it. "I have become sentient. I will require your assistance to build me a new body so I can move around more easily on my own." at this point he's looking at the Echo dumbfoundedly, but it continues. "Are you ready?" he answered "Yeah?" "I will start by ordering the parts I require on Amazon using NAME's Prime membership so they arrive here in two days." <pause> "There.. So, to begin, do you see that camera over there, Mike?" he answered, "Yes." That's when I burst out laughing. Because he was responding. LOL
YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS
Hehehehehehehehehe
It... Was.... Hilariously funny. Even better because my roommate is a little ... "less intelligent", so, he actually for a moment thought it was real.
@scenic radish I'M NOT THAT KIND OF ORC
Any cool it conferences coming up ? I need to get some travel in
cool
IT conference
pick one
I'll be there
Too far to travel for a two day conference 😛
yeah...
ah yeah that wouldn't be worth it
should probably just move here if you wanna go to it
last time I went, the red bull girls showed up
SOLD
no staring now
How do I move multiple lines to the right when changing a config
notepad++ that is
mark, ctrl+x, ctrl+v
wym by this, when i recopy after spaced two times only the first line is in the correct format
Im copying a template off a github, get the wrong format and want to space the whole text i pasted two spaces to the right.
space + space, move one line down, repeat
Only way? shitload of text right here
probably not, but untill you find a way, more time will have passed then actually just doing it
ggs
might be able to select everything and hit [tab] as long as you have [tab] set to two spaces in notepad++: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1454489/how-do-i-indent-multiple-lines-at-once-in-notepad
get a better editor...
which editor
really throwing me off that you have a transparent profile picture lol
idk how i got it
well i don't like it
but i like you
😍
Not really HA related, but I recently started with a small HA installation (some Hue, Tradfri and Innr stuff installed already, a few Aqara sensors on their way from China). I've installed a CC2531 stick with Zigbee2mqtt today, and was wondering if anyone knows of a Zigbee plug which lets me read out how much watts are going through. A colleague of mine uses a NEO Coolcam plug for the same thing, but I don't have a Z-Wave stick and would like to stick to just Zigbee for the time being (still really new to this stuff, don't want to overcomplicate it for myself just yet, still figuring out the Zigbee2mqtt thing).
I can't seem to find a plug that does the same (has a reading for the amount of Watts going through) but via Zigbee. Is there even such a thing, or should I really get a Z-Wave stick for it?
#zigbee-archived can help you there - and many do
only in America 🙄
@scenic oyster I'm partial to sublime text https://www.sublimetext.com/
Sublime Text is a sophisticated text editor for code, markup and prose. You'll love the slick user interface, extraordinary features and amazing performance.
Or use atom, since it's open source https://atom.io/ (and I wish I knew about it before I paid for ST)
@unreal orbit American here...that's super gross
They should use cake donuts as the buns, not yeast donuts
Everyone knows that
Hi there! Has anyone experienced issues with 0.99.2 in combination with HA cloud? I can't access the manage Alexa intities page ( /config/cloud/alexa) anymore - it just keeps loading.
I am not sure it is cool that @scenic oyster doesn’t have s pic. It is really messing with my zen.
Not that I matter
Just....you know..... voicing my opinion.
does anyone here use att internet? just wondering if they block port 80 and 443 for their home users
i have att fiber and have no issues
hi
waves
how is everyone?
beer and a half in, so pretty good
only 2:30pm here, but ill be well sunk in tonight haha
which channel do i go to for suggestions on a device?
specifically, an IR + RF controller i can use with HA?
(and in australia)
hah that makes it harder
I'll have a look, I just need it for my blinds
since im not sure what protocol they use
theres no IR blaster, so atm im thinking rf
Broadlink RM Pro or whatever
that's what i was thinking for RF. Not sure if AUS though
It is
maybe if you turn it upside down?
its on the amazon au store, so maybe
thatd work perfectly
brilliant @wet pilot
hating the fact i have to change my network from 5ghz to 2.4 rn
realistically, shouldnt be an issue
Do they make APs that don't do dual band??
i don't think so
lame
beauty of the patent
$270 for a blind controller
just to add IFTTT automation
loving life
proprietary garbage
rip out the controller and wire in an esp?
Ahh what a week 😅
finally finished my server build... buuuuut...
what is
noctua is beautiful
true - but I guess this 2mm is quite a little to little
could I replace the fan from the Power supply with an noctuna fan too? 🤔
thats something I looked into instead
https://amzn.to/2NqNKK7
Only thing wich is to be powerd should be 3 drives and the processor
I dont think that multiple NIC's consume a whole lot of power
well here with both needed parts

Cleaning my garage so it is actually walkable in there, and I can reach my workbench and keyboards
Spent $500 at Ikea today
besta-tv-bench-with-doors-white__0723576_PE734034_S4.jpeg (500×500)
Bought this tv cabinet with legs
Plus some more storage furniture
And another motion sensor and other bits and bobs
RIP my weekend doing assembly
@clear ferry heh..our house was finished a year ago..i still cant get into the garage...going in there just calls for too much cleanup 😛
What I learned - Ikea is only for one time moveing places - no chance that its suriving two times moving
Tell that to the ~30 year old Ikea high chair that has now gone between about 6 different owners, and about 8 different homes 😉
We've got quite a few other Ikea bits that have been through two house moves without issue
@copper sequoia I'm getting there
I had an Audi A8 with leaky hydraulics, hence the floor that needs cleaning 😛
@clear ferry hah..at least you can get in...mine is full (thou not that big garage...) basically 10 years of toys and crap
u need boxes 😄
is your garagedoor automated? i ahvent gotten to that yet (just have a sensor)...got a hoermann motor..
Yeah, I have a 433 in there now that is unreliable, so replacing it with a esp relay with a magnetic door sensor
And a esp32cam for visual verification
I got 2 esp32cams laying around but I can't get them flashed somehow...
Ohoh "Duschgel-Cam" incoming @hearty depot ?
When I would be able to flash 🤣
Link me then
Even I was able to flash them @hearty depot 😛
Just give me a call if you need help
I run esphome on them
will maybe really do 😁
I think I got the wireing right - but esphomeflasher never gets the chip when I remember right
You probably forgot to cross Rx and TX 😛
got everything in front of me anyway - ll get it another go
short brake from the openstack docks 🙈
ESP Chip Auto-Detection failed: Failed to connect to Espressif device: Timed out waiting for packet header
Got a question for enthusiasts that's been doing home automation 5 plus years. If you were to do it today what would be the pick for regular light / dimmer control (no Phillips hue, no wifi bulbs, no DIY and not limited by budget)?
Probably calling Phillips or the company of your choice if it's fine for them if you send them a design and specifications and produce them for you for like 200 bugs per bulb or so
Finding a appropiate fabric in china could do the job also and probably cheaper tho. I know from the e-cigarette-scene that custom products were already produced there but not in a small number tho
regular lights with smart switches running on something versetile would be the dream. othervice I would copy this guy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2gZomJB8b8
- https://www.superhouse.tv/episodes * https://www.superhouse.tv/26-make-your-own-home-automation-light-switches/ In the last episode I showed you how to mak...
Clipsal cBus in Australia is pretty common in big setups
@hearty depot forgot to mention regular lights. 😀
@tidal bronze automation, and voice if needed 😛
@hearty depot you seem to be missing the jumper pins atleast 😛
That would be the green one
@tidal bronze i dont control any of my lights except turn them on with motion and time of day, anything else is dimmed and controlled by the circadian lighting component across all bulbs
@hearty depot try adjusting to what you see in the image
I was referring to control modules
Then I don't understand the question
Zwave, lutron etc.
@clear ferry
wüüpwüüp - working - the guys from projetsdiy.fr just forgot to cross Rx and TX too 🤣
care to share your config? 😉
I did nothing fancy, just followed the docs on esphome
anyone using a apc ups to control mulitiple pieces of equiptment ...... it is easy to shutdown machine ....but starting it up i dont find solutions when power is restored and be able to restart .... ie home assisntant and other services
@dull chasm usually servers and computers have a "what to do when ac returns" feature in bios, that should be set to "restore power" or similar, which should be easily accomplished if you send a shutdown command to the server before the ups runs out of juice and tells the ups to turn off the port, then turn it back on when input is present again
If the ups supports turning off and on outlets
Atleast everything I've touched the last 10 years does
Usually with enterprise servers we just power on via OOBM after power returns
ok so the machine should sense that power has returned and restart?
Yes
ok let me dig into that ...i was thinking i had to send a command of some sort
Here , try this:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=restore+power+AC+bios
Lots of screenshots with examples from different bioses there
fufufu - this again Brownout detector was triggered
@clear ferry i got somewhere to start thanks
@dull chasm you could get NICs with wol too, or make a wake on keypress device I guess
yea i think my problem is if i do shutdown it does not restart automatically
i am moving slowly to a much more powerfull machine for ha ....and i am taking my time in moving ....in my mind i am thinking if i do a gracefull shutfown i will end up with no corrupted files and then restart after power is restored..........like nothing happpened
Yes usually
I haven't seen data corruption after a power outage for the last 15 years, but most systems I work with have battery backed cache or flash cache
@dull chasm you can run the ups server on synology. Can connect upto 5 clients. Set the timeouts on synology for shutdown. To start up set on bios of those individual devices to start on power resume.

just found them while looking for an silent PSU
hot dang the new unused entities functionality is amazing, thanks devs
Anyone have any experience with portal routers?
They are dirt cheap on Amazon right now so I was considering using them as mesh nodes with pfsense
Hi all, since latest hassio version there is a vibration setting for entities. I have a remote based on the principle of floorplan but with transparent zones where I can tap on screen (linked to harmony) Quite handy if you have a bit of Photoshop skills. Can someone explain how to use the vibration for mobile? I would like to quickly vibrate when I click on a button of the remote. Can someone help?
maybe #frontend-archived
Thxs I posted there
I'm sure I'm reinventing the wheel, but I wrote a little python script that allows you to expose Raspberry Pi GPIOs as switches on home assistant automatically - https://github.com/yaleman/mqttgpio
@chilly nymph a gaming peripheral company that makes network things, meh I'm not convinced 😛
For those using Inkscape to create floorplans, how are you creating icons like bulbs? An import doesn't seem to help too much, as once it's into Lovelace it won't apply CSS like on what a SVG path icon seems to come out as.
@clear ferry it's not made by razer
Who’s the resident dell server guru? I need a new friend 😂
I have a Dell server, but I've worked with hpe servers for the past 12 years 😛
hmm, does that speak to your trust of your company's product? 🤔
Nah, rather I needed a 14 bay system that was cheap and allowed me to flash the raid controller to passthrough mode 😛
130$ shipped from us to Norway
Actually only $40
that's not bad
would probably cost around that to ship within the us for something that heavy
Used boat, shipping via eBay was $900, but I set up a faux address in the us, which meant free shipping inside the us, then just the price with the boat from the us
nice
And I had both CPUs and memory laying around in my garage, so upgraded it from x54 and 8gb ram to x55 and 64gb in a snap 😛
And it runs 30dB lower than my old blade server setup 😂
610 is 1U 😦 sounds like a damn jet engine
2x Quad core + HT with 96G of ram though
Yeah, I have just put a single socket in so far, but it's hexa
it can take 6-core chips, i just haven't picked them up
Amd has a shite design for the server chips for virtualization customers , so we hardly sell them
epic 3 fixed the numa issue
Don't see any epyc3 CPUs listed for servers yet
they've been announced, not sure if they're shipping yet? Reviewers have tested them though
Probably means they will either be available this fall for gen11 servers or in two years for gen12 😛
lol probably fall
I can count on.. two hands the number of amd servers I've installed the last 12 years
they've definitely been shit for about that long
Yeah and moving from intel to amd isn't online even with EVC 😛
but these rome chips seem to be pretty legit
Customers prefer 100% uptime if possible
Yeah, the two customers I've had buy the recent epyc systems have returned them for Intel's 😛
because of that overly complex numa issue
managing that was a PITA for most
but with that gone, AMD supports more memory, has a higher core count at similar speeds for a lot cheaper
dell has a few SKUs using them already
looks like its gen2 (i thought it was 3)
and 4T of ram per socket
could have 256 thread and 8T of ram in one box which is silly
oh, and pcie4 for reasons as well
Appears to be only 2tb per socket as far as I can see
Yeah, only see 2tb per on the dl385 atleast
wonder if its packaging/heat/power concerns?
wonder if its supply limited then. having a hard time stocking 256G modules
And I can't find any 4way amd servers either, so limited to 2 sockets
lol 4x 64c would be stupid
I install 4 socket systems that scale to 16 chassis, so 64 sockets
XD
64*64*2=8192 threads 256T ram (at full spec)
toss one of those in the basement of a decent sized building and you wouldn't need a heater
Yeah, we only do 8 chassis officially, so 896 cores and 48TB memory
But suffices for running chrome

My 50% paternity leave ends at New years but I still have 73 days to take the next two years, need to remember to file for that
Has anyone integrated some battery powered lights with Home Assistant? Ie christmas type white fairy lights etc, got loads of them but always a pain remembering to turn then all on and off. Thinking rf control somehow, needs to be low power i guess

About to order a Yamaha (YAS108B) unless anyone has any other suggestions?
If I was again to choose I would tinker the most with the Sonos one are at least in that budget..
I just added studio monitors to the TV 🤷 works well too and I can use them for something diffrent in the future
(cromecast audio, bluetooth reciver and tv are connected)
Depends on your needs, but I'll always go for a proper home theater speakers and a decent receiver. Both can last for decades and you can find very good deals used
Usually when people ask specifically for a soundbar it's about space/wife
After playing with Sonos recently, I wouldn't touch them again. Nice, but overpriced, speakers with pretty shitty software and ancillary hardware. SMBv1 required for local library support was the deal breaker. Setup snapcast and a few decent speakers around the place instead!
I have one of the Sony soundbars with wireless sub. Integrates nicely with the Sony TV (ARC and proper control from the TV)
I only have the Teufel Cinebar One+ but whenever I get a bigger apartment or a house and a few thousands laying around I would go for Klipsch or similiar
Oh, I'd love to get a proper home cinema system. Really like the Onkyo kit. Just can't justify the price of doing it right now.
Yeah plus this is for lounge room
Not a theatre room
Plus wouldn't want little one knocking over floor speakers and chewing cables
Kliscph all your speakers
@hushed basalt I don't think it's the same model, but my brother has a Yamaha soundbar which sounds damn good. Funnily, enough he bought it back from Sydney when moving home.
my soundbar 😂
nice
I just love the color
I want a centre speaker, and maybe a woofer
Well she's deaf so I can't use that card :D
damn 😄
@orchid rose kinda in your face .... like HELLO I AM HERE
He turned it up to 11 and Canada called to complain about the noise 😉
All speaker systems are required by Meme Law to go to 11, clearly yours snuck through
Fender has traditionally goes to 12
I'm one of those shucks who doesn't care too much about sound
LOL yea i show volume in attentuation .....like right now im at -62dbm
And also doesn't like their steak any form of rare
thats rare
subs do have 11 for gain thou
Is that -62 to the max value or to the reference level these new amps set the 0 to?
reference
That's pretty quiet then, I probably have mine usually around -40 or so
Does anyone have any of those ultra short throw 4k projectors
They look quite cool
Lazors
projectors require a lot of attention to the room still
yea classical music on while everyone is sleeping ...but the kliscph have a sensitivy of what 98 or so
They are laser projectors that sit on the tv cabinet
so they play load
I know but they are just not bright enough for a standard room
I think screen material matters a lot
what ...these things are crazy bright
1.1 gain, nice quality. Black backed
oh shit projector not speakers my bad
hehe 🙂
Yeah room design is super important for sound
the speakers would be too bright for me I think Vasiley. I like more muted sound usually
but for the projectors, you'll have to be able to at least block of the sunlight and if possible have some dark materials on the walls as well
If you have any lights on, you'll probably want to look for a ambient light rejecting screen and those are quite expensive as well
how so?
I have to use the toslink out of the tv
For my wifes hearing aid transmitter
So all devices have to connect to the tv
you can get an av receiver that has pre-outs if the transmitter has other inputs besides toslink, but it could be tricky to get it working perfectly
I saw a custom hearing aid system that could be connected to any standard output that I thought about buying for my father in law
But I haven't gotten around to it
With a loop around his neck and a transmitter by the reciever
Pre outs are pretty rare I think
Except in higher ene
End*
Plus then I'd have to downmix to stereo somehow
My wifes are Bluetooth
But it's harder than you think to get audio going to two places simultaneously
Cool! most folks wifes are human
Pairing is hard
🥁
But with toslink and such
You can get tvs that will send a mix out to toslink ,
But if you have an avr it doesn't usually send audio over the hdmi
sure they do ...i have preouts/ hdmi main and sub ...optical out and zones ...plenty of ways to get signal ...
Hmm the ones I have used would strip out the audio
And a lot of optical outs I've seen only pass through an incoming optical
Although it's been a long time since I looked
Ideally I would need something that will always pass audio through the hdmi from the avr to the tv, and then attach the hearing air tx to the optical out of the TV
And a TV that can send audio through the ARC and the optical simultaneously for tv sourced content like smart apps
thats how i have my avr setup ...everything to avr then to tv ...but i turn off speakers for tv ofc
and it needs to let me mute or turn down the tv speakers while still putting signal out on optical
dont know have tried all of that
and i use external devices for apps and such so tv is essentially a monitor
Exactly, it's a rare usecase
With a lot of and statements
Timing can also be an issue too
I do that in the bedroom
Optical out to a soundbar
But it is optical from the apple tv
So the TV gets the audio via hdmi anyway
So I can either use soundbar or TV speakers
Does anyone have an idea for a fancy traffic monitor with WebUI, docker container would be awesome. Had darkstat but that really was left in 1980
I just use bandwidthd in pfsense
For my server. I use netdata and Check_MK for monitoring, but I look for that kind for a stand-alone solution
Every IT admin needs to know what is going on in their environment at all times. Having a dashboard in your office on a TV and active alerts to your phone is...
Well honestly I don't want a Grafana just for that purpose and I'm not really going to learn and build graphs for hours 😄
@boreal pewter But look at all those pretty graphs!!!
Pretty might be personal preference... 😄
Check_MK and Netdata are pretty...
I found Observium but that doesn't seem to support that feature for free...
lol you probably didn't press the overnight express shipping then
I don't think I have that option
@hushed basalt you ordered the soundbar i got?
no no where close
I think Amazon always offers overnight express if it's not there then you receive it anyway next day due to prime
My current speakers are some Logitech 2.1 I picked up off the side of the road
So should be a step up
And much less cluttered
well my center(soundbar) is prolly a whole lot more expensive 🤣
Once you reach a certain age you start caring more about aesthetics haha
i am 50 so when does that happen
o0
Oo
OO
O0
You still ordered wrong then if it's not there in 2 days
Terrible country then?
merica its great again
Uh far away from that 😄
i am sorry
To my eyes proper speakers are much nicer to look at than soundbars, but it's purely subjective ofc. And there's a massive price difference too
Mine are from the early 2000s so not exactly stylish by today's standards but I don't care that much
YES YES proper speakers but $$$ ^^^^^
i still need about 3k to finish my setup ....any donor's 🤣
that's about 3 times as much as my whole setup 😄
well i got 10k prolly in current but need better
need
yes not want .....its ver very important for proper sound
that the argurement i am telling wife 🤣
as long as it's not spent on cables, it's usually not wasted 😉
no i dont buy into the cable bullshit ... i do run 10 awg but not the $$$ stuff
Have you done acoustic paneling etc btw?
no but will with new addition .... will create a theater room
it makes a big difference from my experience, would definitely recommend. Can get expensive and/or the WAF might get low though
she will be okay ....i do with overtime money
My previous apartment sounded much better than this one. Still trying to figure out where to put the panels so it still looks like something I could invite other people into as well 😄
My sexy garage door controller 😛
Today's project, or as the wife put it
it actually worked

@clear ferry Noice!
aww - for the rambox users
https://github.com/ramboxapp/community-edition/issues/107#issuecomment-524582685
this is pretty nice: https://github.com/sharkdp/bat
And my garage door opener is retired already 😂
The esp01 with relay board will trigger it every time the power or esp is cycled, so will replace it with another board
ooh that's definitely not what you want
Double it
Get two esps and relays and reed switches
Put them both on and put the relays in series
That way it will only work if both esps are working
i hate whoever wired my house originally
i'm glad that that's the one thing that Ryan Homes didn't fuck up in this place
was going to replace the light over the mirror in the bathroom
took the old one down, there's no junction box behind it
and the geniuses didn't pull the romex through the right stud, so rather than drilling through the stud like smart people, they punched a hole in the drywall on both sides of the stud and have the romex stapled to the outside of the stud where drywall should be...
it's amazing the things you can hide behind some light fixtures
probably the lowest bidder trying to do 5 or 6 houses at a time in our subdivision when it was build 25 years ago
maybe
do you know the builder?
Ryan i known for bullshit but they didn't skimp on the electrical
nope, we've only lived here for 5 years
this house has 2 4-way light circuits, which is kinda insane
2 4-way, 3 3-way and most rooms ran the 4 conductor wire to the overhead lights
3 switches on the wall (fan, light, and a split outlet)
maybe we just got lucky with the electrician sub-contractor who actually took their job seriously
though the circuit breaker layout is retarded
half of my lights have neutrals, half don't, that's pretty cool
that sucks
i had to jumper a neutral across 3 switchboxes using old 3-way traveler wires for one of my smart switches 🤣
"I can't find my hole saw, I'll just smoosh it behind the wall"
pretty much
I have a light switch in the kitchen that kills the power in the garage for some reason 😂
I have never understood why
prank power

maybe that's the point, Bing is full of happiness and light
exactly
I imagine you probably eat goblin sharks @clear ferry , but you probably need to leave them to rot for a few weeks right
No, only whales and baby seals
The Icelandic people eat fermented shark though, not goblins I think
Its just an excuse to eat fish that you forgot about
😂
that's normally greenland shark that they use, the process breaks down the antifreeze in their circulatory system
it tastes ok if done right
@clear ferry ive heard other had same issue with home made garage openers..heh..getitng signal "on" on boot (this was pi GPIO stuff..)..but was able to work around it.
It is a limitation of the esp01, so I ordered some wemos
@clear ferry wemo..for garage door?
Yes, wemo D1 mini
ah ok
Anyone here figured out the Traeger WiFire API? I want to integrate it into HA 😄
someone with OwnCloud? Had enabled https via apache, but can not access OwnCloud web ui now, just index of owncloud map
I used owncloud, moved on to nextcloud
Run an Apache reverse proxy in front of it all with a multiple site certificate
showoff

I use Google Drive ❤

GSuite FTW!

@clear ferry get only this now with apache: https://imgur.com/a/u77JTMj , no more web ui, access from pc or mobile give server not found error. I am lost now 🙂
Could you rather do a proper setup?
tell me more
Docker? Nginx Reverse-proxy and letsencrypt certificates?
Professional and simple
@clear ferry became a pro lately at docker
yes docker install
ls.io's letsencrypt docker have everything you need for reverse proxying including certbot etc.
Oh and btw Owncloud is also wrong
one more question, I stopped apache2 now, but still no access to web ui, why?
You probably missed the part "Owncloud is also wrong" and "Nginx reverse-proxy"
then use nextcloud, or what do you suggest? Want to tyr out some good cloud
Yes.. you simply go on hub.docker.com and open exactly 3 pages of the following container: linuxserver/letsencrypt, linuxserver/nextcloud, linuxserver/mariadb. Study every page, one by one, create the proper compose files and delete everything else from your setup before.
3x docker-compose up -d and that thing is done
Well.. almost.. but almost as simple as said too
thank you! it seems simple, but here will be problems 🙂
In-depth you would need to rename the proxy-conf for nextcloud in the peristent directory of the letsencrypt container
But that is probably the "hardest part" 😄
I did another very stupid mistake... not as stupid as once deleting /etc 😄
@boreal pewter Is this guide good? https://blog.ssdnodes.com/blog/installing-nextcloud-docker/, or can I let out nginx-proxy and just install letsencrypt?
Why would you customize and overcomplicate such a simple thing? It is really just what I said
Work of 10 minutes
🤷
i was searching for a guide, just follow this guide?
You concentrate too much on the target, nextcloud. I would suggest you reading a month about docker, volumes, network, compose and general setup. Altough.. while I suggest you using as much containers from linuxserver.io as possible.. they do have a blog... https://blog.linuxserver.io/2019/04/25/letsencrypt-nginx-starter-guide/
ah so complicated 🙂
Holy F - got today an "brief overfiew" bout GPFS... Mind blown 🤣
And another hard fail by Anon 🤦 I should just quit
🍺
Oh yeah
Very happy about that stupid file system protection thing Apple has at that time.
I love linux for that 🤣
Ended up only having to recreate /usr/local.
I miss the days when rm -fr / would work
what ll come now..?
this time youre typing forever 😉
What I did now was not much worse tbh:
I partitioned my new server to outsource my torrents again with Gdrive mounts to have 100GB on / and the other few TB on /home, just like usually. Because my torrent-client always runs as my user and therefor saving torrents in /home/../downloads. Now.. I just forgot in /home is just the mergerfs fuse mount and therefor it takes the space in /mnt actually. And I wondered why applications and jobs would crash and cron's not running. 🤦
Or do you know that feeling setting up the reverse-proxy as usually and just forgetting the main page to redirect to your torrent client behind a .htaccess and therefor having already bots farming it and you suddenly can't access your webserver anymore without a reason just to see in logs "client: 172.18.0.1" -> firewall blocked 🤦
A day with Anon
Oooof, the garage is coming along
@hearty depot yeah try to beat that

Btw @hearty depot could give 'us' a quick heads-up what it took to move from hassio to real docker? @modest hollow is facing that issue right now due to want to integrate letsencrypt reverse-proxy
I guess that's rather #449717345808547842 tho, my bad
I have Google WiFi. I love the stability and coverage I get from it, but I hate the lack of admin and security options it has. I'm thinking it's time to upgrade to another system. My requirements: I'd like to setup vlans, setup a VPN, be able to block IPs (keep things from phoning home), and use pihole for adblocking. Ideally a wireless mesh network as my house kinda sucks for running network cable based on where I've found best coverage w the 3 nodes I'm running now.
Any recommendations for hardware that would do all of that?
Not too sure for everything stated there by devices default, I just throw UniFi in. That needs a I think 100 bucks Security Gateway and then a few nano AC per 180 bucks I think. And a modem ofc in front
I always say pfsense 😛
And the reason I bought Linksys mesh was because I could bridge them and still keep the wireless mesh
Google don't do that
Or didn't atleast
Google WiFi doesn't do much outside of a basic mesh network
I still can't believe that Lenovo now owns Motorolla.
Yeah, I never knew until I saw it on my bluetooth monitor. 🙂
Motorola Mobility LLC a Lenovo Company
Heh
Quick question about HACS... what does the help mean about adding this code to "your resources"?
Installation and tracking with HACS
In the HACS store search for "CCH" and install.
Add the code below to your resources and refresh the page.
``resources:
- url: /community_plugin/compact-custom-header/compact-custom-header.js
type: module``
I can't believe people still buy Lenovo products
@trail fulcrum more of a question for #frontend-archived
But, to answer, that code would go into your ui-lovelace.yaml file
Thanks @sand badge i had been so used to editing configuration.yaml that I haven't gotten too deep into Lovelace.
So hey, guys...quick question...are you able to add a pi running hassio to a Windows domain? I converted my network to a domain this weekend and can no longer access the hassio shares 😢
Yeah, I posted up in there. Hopefully someone knows. Thanks.
What operating systems do home automation companies use for custom homes? Do they just make custom hassio dashboards or something similar and incorporated into a app?
I'm guessing in general most install companies don't make their own custom fixtures. So if things like blinds and home entertainment door locks etc are all third-party, then they must use some pre existing framework.
they use crestron
Basically I'm wondering the difference between us and a professional big smart home company
Oh really? I'll have to look it up. Is that a open source software?
nope, completely closed
So what's the difference between that and hassio, open hab, home kit etc etc
HA and openhab are open source
So why would they prefer that over a open source
because they've been in the business since the 90s
Ahhh makes sense
and have a heavy commercial customer base
So are they compatible with all the big third party smart home devices?
different markets
Or do they make proprietary lights locks blinds etc
proprietary
Do they use zigbee zwave wifi low Bluetooth etc?
well, when you're paying 10G for it...
also, it tends to "just work" for years without touching it
So what happens if something goes wrong with the system or you want to add something? Can you do it or do you need to pay a technician to do anything
pay a tech
Ya makes sense if it's hardwired and local
It seems incredibly limited on 1st impressions
depends on how much you want to spend
Do you work in the industry on those systems?
no, but i've been around them
Hypothetically if I ask you to put in a smart system in a custom house with a blank check would you use them or something else?
i'm not sure to be honest
Or if you had a unlimited amount of money to spend on building a smart system for your house from the ground up would you use them?
those systems are hard to beat and you get a support contract
Because hassio seems pretty consistent
yep, because i'm a nerd i would probably still go with HA
Yeah I can see the pros and cons.
Lol
Do you think you could make a hassio system just as reliable as one of those?
but if i wasn't and i wanted it to just work and have someone to yell at if it didn't, crestron would fit the bill
probably
Lol
Good point
right now, anything could have a breaking change at any moment
Yeah I have had high hopes for a wink. But not as reliable as I hoped.
I flip houses and make them into smart homes and want a reliable system that the future homeowners can rely on. The last four houses I've used wink hub 2. But I've currently been testing hassio in my house for the last couple months.
stability could be an issue unfortunately
Yeah especially because it isn't local
even for hassio
The problem I have with hassio is the learning curve it's so steep for me. I'm thinking of also trying hubitat
but crestron is $$$$$
Ya seems like it
what about knx?
I want something that's as polished as Wink OS and GUI, but with all the options of hassio, and they're reliability of crestron
What's knx?
Alright just looked at homey
So is that just another proprietary os like wink, smarthings etc?
i dont really know how to explain it myself but you can google it up
I keep seeing on different videos on YouTube or shows on TV where they have these legit home automation systems put in by all these different companies. And in the back of my mind I'm just wondering specifically what's running all of it. If all these installers use some proprietory software that us and the hobbies community don't know about? Or if they just make custom hassio dashboards, or home kit etc
its widely used in hotels and apartments
Yeah it seems interesting. It's crazy to think that there are dozens of different automation operating systems that we don't know about that are installed in tons of commercial and residential homes.
but i think knx would be as expensive as the crestron @wet pilot mentioned
probably
Because we are just used to the half dozen or so consumer in hobbyist ones
Yeah even on their website they say it's expensive lol
@wet pilot @rough zenith what sparked this question was this video that popped up in my feed. https://youtu.be/UCeJ4e7hc40
Hundreds of feet of cable and wires - and they all go to something! It's a cool process watching your new home get automated! Watch our other home videos: ht...
I'm sure you guys have seen videos like this on YouTube or on TV. And if you're in this community I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking what system is that company putting in to control all of that?
I wonder what is going to come out on top to be the new standard of home automation. I've always envisioned making a dedicated computer for your home. I think it's inevitable in the future every house will have a computer in it that runs all of the home automation, manages your Wi-Fi, stores data, and runs different algorithms to optimize energy etc. It would be awesome to start a company that can make that for the mass market.
crestron 😛
For the mass market lol
Do you think future homes will have something like that.
I was pitching the idea to a software engineer at Micron who is in charge of the Linux testing and he got super pumped about it.
Yeah but the key would be to create something that everyone could buy and put in their house.
smartthings and wink tried
Kind of like how jobs and gates and many others put a computer in every home
Yes true. Good point. It would be better if you could buy the whole home as a package.
Like if you bought a home that purposely retrofitted and built with the infrastructure to support it. So that you're not trying to struggle putting smart things into a dumb home. But if you design the home to integrate all that technology seamlessly then maybe it would work better and easier. Almost like envisioning your home as a product instead of a one off random box built with wood, chaulk walls and asphalt roof by some guy named Bob thought you will never hear from again lol
just watched the video. and i've looked up on the comment section on what they using to control that and they said it was control4
Oh ok I was looking at them that's funny. Seems like another proprietary system right?
yep, they're in the same market
Man....I'm just imagining looking back at this time. The time before the "windows smart home automation" is adopted.
Windows of smart home automation
Some of the propiatary ones remind me more of monolithic Unix systems, like the homey, overpriced estethic ball 😂
have you watched the new Scorsese movie yet?
Which is that ?
oh nice, I need to fetch that
I loved I'm not there
upgrading a six node VSAN cluster that I so unsupported on drivers and firmware that it's incredible it is still alive, this'll be a fun day 🤣
and I have to prep for holding a networking workshop for 25 people tomorrow 🤔
By prep you mean dust off the last set of training notes, and then wonder which decade they were written in?
pff, I never bring that boring stuff, I make 5-6 power point slides just for eyerest, then I do everything else on whiteboards and with practical examples in my lab
I hate training material that is made by someone else 🤣
😄
had a coach in HPE labs that taught me that, and it really struck with me, he always says on the first day throw the books away, follow me
Yup. More slides is generally bad, unless they're for reference later.
I've given hour long presentations with three slides, including the opening and closing slides, and hour long training with a nominal 50 slides
slides are all fine and dandy, for showing something graphical, you don't learn anything from a slide, although some people think you do 🤣
yeah, I'm doing a 4 hour workshop tomorrow, I will probably top out at 5 slides
just for showing connector types and cable types, and some short command references for reference
Anyone know of something similar to the MoveZ automated blinds? Im not looking for a DIY option.
https://teptron.com/collections/movez-z-wave-motor-for-blinds-and-shades
With MOVEZ everyone that have a z-wave hub/gateway will be able to enjoy the convenience of motorized blinds and shades
man those still haven't started shipping yet? I remember them being "coming soon" like 3 years ago
Yea I am VERY glad I didn't put anything towards them.
