solar basalt
#

There are indeed alotta channels

#

Lol

#

But nah uhm

#

Im just tryna expose a scammer

clever mortar
#

Thankfully, all channels have a topic that describes what they're for

#

Well we ain't scammer report central ๐Ÿ˜‰

light trout
#

This is not Discord support

solar basalt
#

Yea but

clever mortar
#

But no

solar basalt

If you want to report scammers, report them to people that can do something about it

I dont wanna report him

@light trout have you been scamming teens on HACS again?

light trout

Theres a server that claims to give you money for inviting ppl and its obviously a scam amd im just tryna expose him

clever mortar
#

Well, if we've anybody that stupid here, I'd be worried

solar basalt
#

Wym

clever mortar
#

Now report them to Discord

solar basalt
#

Uhm

clever mortar
#

Shouting about them makes it sound like you have an axe to grind and you're the problem

solar basalt
#

I guess, ima go figure out how to do that xD

It's not hard, go to Discord's help pages and search

Maybe I should try to install HA on Hannah Montana Linux to spur the youths into home automation ๐Ÿ™‡

Is there a Hannah Montana distro? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Yes, go get it @light trout

I think I read that North Korea has their own as well, to use on their own intranet

I remember reading a long article about the north Korean intranet many years ago

light trout

When their intranet is for the entire country, is intranet then correct?

clear ferry
#

Well yes, because it doesn't talk to what we define as the internet ๐Ÿค”

light trout

But their intranet is their internet

#

That is confusing

Yes sad

That is the problem with the Norwegian government atm, they are only young people who live in the city center and want to save the world, without ever being outside of the city to see the infrastructure of the rest of the country, and that's why the government is bleeding money because they subsidise electric cars by over 50%, which doesn't help anybody except the people who already have loads of money or live in the city and shouldn't have a car anyway ๐Ÿ˜›

Dawn comes before the sun rises, as the sky is no longer totally dark

normal ferry
#

Hmm that's weird. Living in Greece since I was 0 years old and now being 30 (soon to be 31) I always drank Sprite - never had an alternative myself. So this thing he gave you was a greek branded, similar tasting Sprite ?

#

@clear ferry

ocean mirage

Some places here only offer Australian drinks but its not common

So maybe just chance

clear ferry
#

Yes, it was Greek letters on the bottle and tasted like Sprite only sweeter

Might have been from one of the islands perhaps

normal ferry

I can only think of one (or rather one and a half) Greek company(ies) that makes refreshments that are alternatives to well-known brands such as Coca cola, Fanta etc

normal ferry
#

or could have been a greek store owner talking shit - I mean I'm proud where I come from - but we can be real scallywags at times ๐Ÿ˜›

clear ferry
#

But the letters were Greek, so it has to be from somewhere down there

normal ferry
#

yeah perhaps - could you take a look at the websites I sent you? they have like 8 products in total ๐Ÿ˜›

#

if it's not there

#

maybe it was something very local as @ocean mirage said

ocean mirage
#

I only recently learnt of some drinks we have here in some places

#

Its odd, but any soft drink (soda) branding that isn't one of the big brands just looks weird

normal ferry
ocean mirage
#

I expected there to be more greek alphabet on those bottles

normal ferry
#

In Greece there is - but I assume since they export products abroad they turn letters to latin so as to market better

ocean mirage
#

ah right

normal ferry

So you buy an EPSA - I buy an ฮ•ฮจฮ‘ and we' re drinking the same stuff

ocean mirage

9 months

ocean mirage

We have mandatory too, but the last 20 years most people who don't want to don't have to

clear ferry

Norway ๐Ÿ˜›

normal ferry

good luck with that ๐Ÿ˜›

#

nowadays it's just accepted. used to be strict but the army has gotten very loose - mobile technology attributed a lot to that. now most youngsters go there to take selfies and post on instagram their uniforms and guns

#

normally they forbid it - but you can't have sargeants body search you for mobile devices day and night

#

so they just look the other way

ocean mirage
#

Yeah that makes a lot of sense

clear ferry
#

I was supposed to be in military intelligence, but they started calling me in when I was 17, and I was busy with school till I was 21, then they gave up and sent me a letter that I was relieved of duty, unless I became a priest or a veterinarian ๐Ÿ˜‚

ocean mirage
#

why unless those jobs?

normal ferry
#

๐Ÿ˜ฎ yeah why?!

clear ferry
#

Because they need both a lot, vet for the horses and dogs and priests since most of Norway is relaxed religious we don't have an abundance of priests

ocean mirage

horses eh, interesting

#

Not gonna lie, it has crossed my mind how easy it would be to be an army priest and make that good money

#

but I couldn't do that cause it'd be a lie

normal ferry
#

at least in spite of these two professions you have a way out. for us there is no way out. it's 9 months or more (14 or 18) and you cannot do anything , they even replace your ID with a military ID which you cannot use anywhere without getting noticed (i.e. airports to get out of country ๐Ÿ˜› )

the only shenanigans are:
double citizenship (Other & Greek) : 3 months
having 1 parent due to divorce: 8 months
having 1 parent due to death: 6 months
proclaiming yourself as mentally ill (aka crrrRRrrrazy) and presenting papers that show medication treatment: 0 months but really really really tiring process

clear ferry

That is really strict, who are the Greeks afraid of still? The Turks?

@clever mortar yea at 10:38 EST. It caused such a pounding that HA banned the IP, which because I use a reverse proxy, banned everything while using the internal docker IP. ๐Ÿ˜›

Make use of the X-Forwarded-For header to get the real ip?

onyx gorge
#

idk, I'll leave it for now. I would think a surge of 500s from google cal shouldnt hit HA authentication like that to ban the IP though.

#

I think thats the real issue

#

why is HA banning ANY IP just because it is getting 500s from an external source

#

and I know it happened because my logs indicate it in both ngnix and HA

I've seen zero evidence of HA blocking anything, but that's a conversation for #330944238910963714

#

yes, a lot of calendars. Maybe not that many but its a lot. And used for various things.

so maybe because of the amount I have it hit the limit.

#

@clear mirage lol I have AT&T Uverse as well and I am in a really developed part of Chicagoland and the fastest they offer me is the 50mbps I have! No fiber or anything else!

clear mirage
#

@dark swallow lol wow. I'm in northern part of Oakland County, MI in small town called Holly, and we have 75. Just wish it would work.

dark swallow
#

lol yeah it's super annoying because I would switch but Comcast is the only competition and they offer literally the same thing at the same rates! It's infuriating!

#

And its not like they don't have some fiber runs out towards me because I know businesses get fiber right down outside of my neighborhood

#

Also when I log into my account I see xxGB used of unlimited but then when I look at the plan fine print I find this . The "limit" is one terabyte and if I go over I have to pay $10 for 50Gb and its added each time I go over not to exceed $100 so there is a limit! Crazy high and I will probably never reach it but still!

clear ferry
#

Limits of internet usage? What is this ? 1999 ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜‚

dark swallow
#

In AT&T's defense it is "unlimited" if you don't read the fine print!

clear ferry
#

We used to have limits back when we had ADSL 1Mbit connections in the early 2000s

dark swallow
#

And I mean come on they have had a dramatic increase over the last few years in bandwidth with literally no motivation to improve the infrastructure so limits make sense!

#

If only there was a federal organization that could regulate this largely unregulated industry, sign...

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I would pass that limit easily, I pass 30-80GB through my router daily

#

1TB seems to be 33GB per day

dark swallow
#

Lol and then you would spend another $100 to get cut off after another 6 days

#

what uses so much of your daily bandwidth?

#

but the best part is if you don't look hard you think you have unlimited data! This is another screencap from my account

clear ferry
#

Torrent downloads, Plex streaming to friends, FTP host with work stuff I share with customers and partners, and I host a few seperate web sites for old wow guilds and stuff

dark swallow
#

Figured torrent and plex usage lol! Literally everyone I know that does that chew through so much data!

#

The absolute best part of my AT&T situation is I HAVE to use their Modem/Router if I also want their TV services

#

I tried to use their router just as a modem and for the tv stuff but nope they block you from doing stuff like that and I have even heard they will terminate your contract with them because it breaks the terms!

#

You can use your own router but all internet has to be routed through theirs first then to yours

clear ferry
#

I ditched my ISP router, then I couldn't use IPTV, so I just passed the wan to the TV box directly via a seperate vlan and that works nicely

#

Because I can get 6 external ips anyway ๐Ÿ˜‚

dark swallow
#

Lol that's great! Also they lock down basically all of the router settings! I tried to set up hassio for external use and since it wasn't one of their prebuilt port forwarding options they won't let me do it

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I haven't run an ISP router in over 20 years, I always find a way around ๐Ÿค“

dark swallow
#

They "allow" you to setup custom port forwarding settings but don't actually forward the ports if it doesn't match the rules they set. So it looks like it should all work but doesn't and when you try to talk to AT&T about it they say you can do that by paying them more money!

#

I just want actual competition in the internet market in America!

late gate
#

lol I put up a tab with Home Assistant thinking it was clever with a sim card so I could give alarms if the internet is down. Today I had 7 telemarketers calling home assistant :p

dark swallow
#

Oh yeah I lied the actual best part of my ISP is that I would pay $60 for my 50Mbps speeds but I pay $30 because of a "promotion" or whatever bullshit, the other plan I can switch to is 5Mbps! for $50!!! so 10x reduction in speed for $10 less the cost! Seems alright to me!

clever mortar
#

@late gate You need to set up something that'll direct the calls to your own VOIP PBX where you can then mess with them ๐Ÿ˜‰

late gate
#

@clever mortar If im bored one time, for now I think I have to figure out how to block all calls to the tab :p

#

I almost fell off the sofa. Never expected the tab to start ringing

dark swallow

@clever mortar I was planning to do that when I still had a IP based landline, send them to a MP3 of screeching monkeys

clever mortar

late gate
#

clear mirage

That is too funny. It's always fun to have fun with telemarketers. I think I got my situation almost resolved. I actually have mine set up to where the att router just forwards the internet to my personal router. When I was setting up some tasmotized switches I came across the surprise that the ATT router gives you a limit of 15 or so static ips

Netflix no longer works with Kodi?

#

There seems to have been some issue yesterday that should be fixed soon, but for me Kodi has been by far the best solution for watching stuff on Viaplay for example. It's the only platform that allows me to force a minimum quality for the streams, which makes the whole experience much nicer. I don't use Netflix so I can't say anything about how it works, but I tested it at some point and it seemed okay and better than on a Panasonic TV I've used it on.

Very nice improvements @flat lintel , had one more suggestion to consider (if it's easy to do). Maybe the huge ass instructional block at the top of the page should not appear for logged out users / guests? Line of thinking on this is that there's users who either lurk or find these posts via Google search and that big ass banner with animated gif is quite annoying and distracting, especially on mobile. And if you think about it that info is only relevant to those who have an account in the first place - guests who don't even have an account yet shouldn't need to see things about how to post codeblocks etc until they actually register and log in first IMO.

flat lintel

Someone meiht know if i can use the sed lookup with another command? like
sed 's/iface\ (ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)\ inet\ dhcp\ /###Hooray##/g' /etc/network/interfaces

clever mortar
#
sed 's/iface\ $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)\ inet\ dhcp\  /###Hooray##/g' /etc/network/interfaces
hearty depot
#

Thanks! - What did I do wrong? (besides $)

clever mortar
#

Well, that's the key thing for running another process and substituting the output

#
echo $(date)
``` will print the output of the date command
light trout
#
You have no pending dates
clever mortar
#
You can also do the following, assuming there's supposed to be / in there for a path
#
sed 's=iface/$(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)/inet/dhcp/=###Hooray##=g' /etc/network/interfaces
#
You don't have to use / as the separator in sed, it's just convention
hearty depot
clever mortar
#
iface $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp) inet dhcp=iface $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp) inet static=g
#
๐Ÿค”
#
You're missing / in there
#
Lots of them
#
Or have you changed what you're doing?
#
What's your actual goal here?
hearty depot
#
when I would see them ๐Ÿคฃ
look into /etc/network/interfaces, search for the actuall ethernet interface, check if its using dhcp - replacing it with static
then looking for the new string with static and append the static config
clever mortar
#
Ah, then...
#
I'd write a script. The script would iterate over each file, rather than trying to work on them all at once.
hearty depot
#
its only the /etc/network/interfaces file - only copyed it because I bet that I screw something up in the process
clever mortar
#
Of course... iface enp2s0 inet stati2323c
#
Or is that deliberate
hearty depot
#
welll - thats only that I can see the changes right away
#
(first time ever I read deliberate ๐Ÿ˜… )
clever mortar
#
Aha!
#
Change ' to "
#
' is special
hearty depot
#
Hell its hauting me even in shell - not only yaml
clever mortar
#
' tells the shell not to do anything special with the contents
#
Aka, treat it like a dumb string
hearty depot
#
๐Ÿ˜ฎ
hearty depot
clever mortar
#
Probably not so much the shell froze, more likely you broke the network settings
hearty depot
#
Just rebooting - lets see if that helped - But just changed the actual settings from DHCP to static - It should work imo
#
well reboot did the trick
hearty depot
#
aaw having to much fun creating this scripts ๐Ÿ˜‚
sudo for ifup was the problem - now last thing to do - get an static DNS (that was actually the first intention lol)
You can also run ssh -v 192.168.0.1 to get some logging out of SSH and see what's going on
dull chasm
well working on that but little buggers are a pita
amber ice
#
Should I create the keys with user root or user pi on the rsnapshot server?
clever mortar
#
If you look at my guide, it's all done with sudo, so the commands are run as root
amber ice
#
yes, so I did that correctly
clever mortar
Hmmmm, I may have spotted a typo in that guide ๐Ÿค”
#
Yeah, typo
#
Ah, no
#
Insufficient coffee
amber ice
#
I'm confused now ๐Ÿ˜‰
clever mortar
I need more ๐Ÿ’ค and โ˜•
#
Check that /root/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub on the rsnapshot server, and /root/.ssh/authorized_keys on the target to back up are the same
#
Then try the ssh command above, using your IP
amber ice
#
Is there a checksum function or something along those lines?
clever mortar
#
md5sum
amber ice
#
yes, they are the same
#
Just to be clear, the sshd_conf-file I had to edit on the home-assistant server, right?
#
I guess, wouldn't make much sense otherwise ๐Ÿ˜„
#
Btw both systems running on raspbian
half sable
#
hello fam, am havving an issue anyone free to help?
low harness
#
Just ask your question and someone might answer if they can.
half sable
#
am trying to connect my home assistant remotely i did install duckdns and followed the steps did the port forwarding part duckdns gets updated on ma external ip and all good but i still cant access my home assistant remotly
dull chasm
#
i dont use hassio but did you set up ssl
half sable
#
you mean did i port forward ssl?
dull chasm
#
yes and yes
amber ice
#
@tawny pebble MAybe it's better to continue here ๐Ÿ˜„
tawny pebble
#
agree ๐Ÿ˜‰
amber ice
#
I did create the keys wih user "pi" and sudo
#
on Host A
#
That did create the keys in the root directory of Host A
tawny pebble
#
sudo creates the key for root user in user "Frank" environment. you should avoid that
well, ok then - so let's continue with root.
amber ice
#
ok, so then recreate the keys with user root (via sudo su) on Host A?
dull chasm
#
@half sable dont dm ....others may help as i dont use hassio ....but you set up ssl i was checking that you forwarded 443 to 8123 to correct ip
tawny pebble
#
yes, elevate to root (sudo -i)
amber ice
#
ok
tawny pebble
#
and then create the key:
ssh-keygen -t rsa 2048
amber ice
#
ok, that command is different from the guide
#
Your command doesn't work ๐Ÿ˜„
tawny pebble
#
i'm going by memory and it fails sometime :
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048
amber ice
#
ok now ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
#
no passphrase?
tawny pebble
#
nope
amber ice
#
ok
dull chasm
#
wait till you get past 50 years ....it fails all the time ๐Ÿ˜„
amber ice
#
ok, I'm going to copy over the public keys again
#
key, not keys
tawny pebble
#
yes, only the public key
#
or you could use the command ssh-copd-id
#
# ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub root@host
amber ice
#
I copied it
#
Sorry didn't see your last command in time
#
Should I delete the old key?
tawny pebble
#
no if you copied it correctly there's no need
amber ice
#
No I meant the Key from the guide
tawny pebble
#
there are several ways to copy it. all in all, it's a few rows of text inside a file
amber ice
#
I've got two keys in there now, the one I just copied and the one which is not working from the guide
tawny pebble
#
oh yes, just use this last key you created
amber ice
#
ok
tawny pebble
#
its name should be id_rsa if you didn't change it.
amber ice
#
Yes it is ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
#
Ok, done
#
so now try again to ssh from host a to b?
tawny pebble
#
cool, run ssh yourhost
amber ice
#
ok, as user root from host a?
tawny pebble
#
if both the user have the same name, you can only use the host without user@ ๐Ÿ˜‰
amber ice
#
Sorry that's confusing me right now ๐Ÿ˜„
#
So I'll just type ssh 192.168......
tawny pebble
#
๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† sorry my bad.
just run
ssh ip.of.your.host as root of A.
amber ice
#
ok
#
It want's a password
#
in the sshd_config file the line "PubkeyAuthentification yes" is commented out
#
Is that correct?
tawny pebble
#
what's your system(s) ? never seen that commented out. it should not be.
let me check in my system (i do not use pub key though)
amber ice
#
Both systems running raspbian
#
Don't mind, I deleted the # and killed the sshd process, still want's a password
tawny pebble
#
alright, in one of my system that's commented out as well. never noticed, but i don't use public key here so wasn't sure.
don't kill it :/
systemctl restart sshd.service
(maybe raspbian still uses init, if the above doesn't work:
service sshd restart)
#
i try to use pub key on my system, give me 2 minutes that i'll try but i run debian and ubuntu.
amber ice
#
No problem
#
When trying to restart teh service I get the message Unit sshd.service not found with both commands
tawny pebble
#
alright it works on my system.
write the password, you only type it once
#
then it's probably ssh and not sshd
amber ice
#
I don't have a root password
tawny pebble
#
it's the same passw you use when you run sudo
amber ice
#
It doesn't ask for one ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
tawny pebble
#
lol ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† never used raspbian, and after this i will probably never use it
amber ice
#
my user is pi and it never asks for a root password when using sudo
#
it just does what i type
tawny pebble
#
when you type commands, does it have a $ (dollar) or a # (sharp)?
#
use pi
amber ice
#
$
tawny pebble
#
ok, it's a user non-root but it's possible it has root privileges, that's why when you use sudo it doesn't ask for password.
This means that you could avoid using root and connect them both through the pi user.
try repeating the steps for the ssh-key for pi
amber ice
#
ok
tawny pebble
#
on system A:
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048
$ ssh-copy-id -i .ssh/id_rsa.pub pi@system.B.its.ip
#
$ ssh ip.of.B
if ask for password, type the pi's of system B
amber ice
#
on your second command it doens't find the "ID file"
#
Failed to open ID file No such file or directory
hearty depot
#
Hehe - just automated that a day ago
amber ice
#
I'll just navigate to it manually
#
ok, working
tawny pebble
#
yeah maybe because i wrote the command as you user was in his home directory -i .ssh/blabla
#
working?? nice ๐Ÿ˜„
hearty depot
#
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/file.key.pub pi@${ipadress}
ls .ssh
amber ice
#
Now I've got a ">"
#
Nevermind, was missing a "'"
hearty depot
#
Cmd+c
Or does it ask you for an password?
amber ice
#
I'll modify my rsnapshot ocnfig and let's see if it works then ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
#
@hearty depot Sorry my bad, was missing a character for the command to complete
hearty depot
#
You know how to edit the sshd_config ?
You could test out my script (actually one of my first ๐Ÿคฃ)
amber ice
#
Ok, I now can ssh into my Host B without being asked for a password, but rsnapshot still want's the password for pi@HostB
tawny pebble
#
run the script as user pi, not root
amber ice
#
That's what I was doing ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
hearty depot
#
you have to define your private key
#
SSH config is a nice thing
amber ice
#
Where do I have to define it?
#
in rsnapshot.conf?
tawny pebble
#
@hearty depot uhmm you sure? not need i think :/
hearty depot
#
I just jumped in - so I don't got all infos
tawny pebble
#
@amber ice there's a optional config file in .ssh
amber ice
#
As I said I can ssh into Host B from command line without being asked for a pw
tawny pebble
#
@hearty depot no problem ๐Ÿ˜„ thanks for helping here tho! 100% appreciated (:
@amber ice it is a script, this one of rsnapshot you are running, right? it's not single command
clever mortar
#
Are you running it as pi or as root?
#
(should be root)
amber ice
#
rsnapshot is being run from pi
clever mortar
#
See above ๐Ÿ˜‰
amber ice
#
ok, let me try that then ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
clever mortar
#
Only root can set the ownership of files
#
And you want that in a backup
#
At no point in any of this should you be using pi
#
(other than to run commands with sudo setting it all up)
amber ice
#
Ok, I' think I can try to do the steps that now at least got the passworldess ssh going for user root again
#
@tawny pebble I think it's a command
#
I'll try to do the steps again but now with user root
hearty depot
#
On host b - try to run
sudo sed -i 's/#PubkeyAuthentication\ yes/PubkeyAuthentication\ yes/g' /etc/ssh/sshd_config
amber ice
#
I'm confused again
#
I think I'll give up and just use a stupid USB Stick
clever mortar
#
You might want to try rclone instead then, and back up to a cloud service
#
It's slightly more straightforward
amber ice
#
I've recreated the keys for user root copied to public key over to the home assistant server and now I' stuck again at ssh wanting to know the pw
clever mortar
#
You are trying to ssh from root to root@?
amber ice
#
yes
#
well no
clever mortar
#
๐Ÿคฆ
#
Yes but no
#
๐Ÿค”
amber ice
#
from root to "ssh myip"
clever mortar
#
Right, that defaults to the same account
amber ice
#
but not from root "ssh root@myip"
clever mortar
#
So... did you yet try ssh -v?
amber ice
#
no, what's that?
clever mortar
#
That thing I posted twice about before ๐Ÿ˜‰
#
Try ssh -v myip
#
Then use a code share site to share the output
amber ice
#
sorry, must have missed that
#
ok, give me one sec
#
I hope there's no sensitive information in there
clever mortar
#
There isn't, just account names and IPs
#
You share an IP range with about 50% of the planet ๐Ÿ˜›
clever mortar
#
Ok, the far end doesn't like either key you have
#
You might find useful information in /var/log/auth.log on the far end
amber ice
#
"User root authorized keys /root/.ssh/authorized_keys is not a regular file"
clever mortar
#
Well, there's your problem
#
ls -ald /root/.ssh/authorized_keys
amber ice
#
on the hass-pi?
clever mortar
#
On the remote host, the one that log line is from ๐Ÿ˜‰
amber ice
#
permission denied
#
ah sudo is my friend
clever mortar
#
A directory...
#
Woops
#
Delete that ๐Ÿ˜‰
amber ice
#
Ok
clever mortar
#
Then copy the file over so that it's a file there
amber ice
#
Copy the id_rsa.pub to /root/.ssh?
clever mortar
#
No
amber ice
#
I'm really sorry
clever mortar
#
Copy the .pub file to that folder, as authorized_keys
#
That directory you created above
#
That must be a file
amber ice
#
so I rename the file?
clever mortar
#
Only at the destination
#
Don't rename the master
amber ice
#
yes, understood
#
now it's a file
#
AND IT WORKS
#
๐Ÿ’ฏ
clever mortar
#
Sounds like somewhere along the way you mistyped some commands ๐Ÿ˜‰
#
Now you know what places to look for useful error messages though
amber ice
#
I had a problem with your copy command from user pi tp root on the remote system
#
I recreated to folder structure and was assuming it was a directory
#
Also big thanks to @tawny pebble
#
and @hearty depot
tawny pebble
#
@amber ice Gerne (: glad it works now! @clever mortar is way above this world ๐Ÿ‘Œ
hearty depot
amber ice
#
Ok I see ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I live relatively close to austria, only have to drive 30 mins. My uncle also moved away from italia to germany about 5 years ago
#
@clever mortar As always a massive thank you.
#
I'll Just have to check if cron is working, in about 30 minutes time ๐Ÿ˜„
#
Now I gotta figure out a command line sensor telling me the date of the last created backup ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I'm figuring this out myself this time ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Bye
clever mortar
#
Good news, with rsnapshot that should be trivial
amber ice
#
Let's see D:
#
I would go down the "cmd_postexec" path, and publish something to my mqtt broker
clear ferry
#
So, three German speaking people at the same time...
Is this an invasion?
amber ice
#
Better prepare ๐Ÿ˜‰
storm summit
#
rsnapshot? wow. that brings back nightmares.
#
the slowest backup software ever made.
clever mortar
#
It's rsync, so...
#
Anyway, at most home users's data volumes, the speed isn't important
#
That said, 25 minutes for 6 or so TB and a half dozen hosts (including a handful of Pis)... I'm fine with that "slow" ๐Ÿ˜›
storm summit
#
seriously? i would kill myself using rsnapshot with 6tb.
#
use borg or zfs or btrfs ...not rsnapshot
clever mortar
#
zfs and btrfs are file systems, not backup tools ๐Ÿ˜‰
storm summit
#
that depends, you can block copy snapshots remotely.
clever mortar
#
Nice thing about rsnapshot though is that checking your backups is trivial
storm summit
#
so yes, ,they are backup tools
clever mortar
#
And yes, there's lots of options, but rsync is pretty universal, and it works, even if you think it's slow
storm summit
#
I think it's slow? Its for a fact slow ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
clever mortar
#
For a commercial setup, I'd care, maybe
storm summit
#
true that it's universal and dead simple.
clever mortar
#
For home use... as I said, 6 TB in 20 minutes... I'm fine with that
storm summit
#
but slow AF.
#
20 minnutes? that seems very fast.
#
is it 6tb of large files?
clever mortar
#
4 TB are large, the rest are medium to small
#
So... typical home use
storm summit
#
Interesting. Last time i fork-lifted rsnapshot was on about a 4tb environment. took 12 hours to do backups. I think there were 10 days of retention
clever mortar
#
Initial backup ain't fast, but after that... no problems
storm summit
#
replaced it with borg and increased retention to 1 year and backup times down to 2 hours.
clever mortar
#
There's loads of options, but as I said, I recommend rsnapshot because (a) universal, (b) ease of browsing the backups/verifying the restore
storm summit
#
borg will also get you a lot longer retention with the same amount of space as well.
#
wait, i just remembered...
#
you can mount a borg repo as a filesystem
#
so its the same thing as rysnc!
clever mortar
#
I love their compatibility warnings though ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
#
The only thing they didn't warn about was The End of Days
