There are indeed alotta channels
Lol
But nah uhm
Im just tryna expose a scammer
Thankfully, all channels have a topic that describes what they're for
Well we ain't scammer report central ๐
This is not Discord support
Yea but
But no
:(
If you want to report scammers, report them to people that can do something about it
I dont wanna report him
Making noise makes you look suspect
@light trout have you been scamming teens on HACS again?
Suuuuuure ๐
Theres a server that claims to give you money for inviting ppl and its obviously a scam amd im just tryna expose him
Well, if we've anybody that stupid here, I'd be worried
Wym
Now report them to Discord
Uhm
Shouting about them makes it sound like you have an axe to grind and you're the problem
I guess, ima go figure out how to do that xD
It's not hard, go to Discord's help pages and search
Maybe I should try to install HA on Hannah Montana Linux to spur the youths into home automation ๐
Yes, go get it @light trout
I remember I downloaded it in the mid or late 2000s ๐ค
Sounds plausable, that's about when that have was partially relevant. ๐
Searching for strange Linux distros bring up Hannah Montana every time, but also Muslim, Christian and satanic Linux every time ๐
I need to investigate this
For pleasure!
Now I'm to afraid to ask if you then will investigate Hannah Montana or satanic Linux
Just imagine! you get the beeeeeeest of both worlds ๐
Don't forget Red Flag Linux

I think I read that North Korea has their own as well, to use on their own intranet
I remember reading a long article about the north Korean intranet many years ago
When their intranet is for the entire country, is intranet then correct?
Well yes, because it doesn't talk to what we define as the internet ๐ค
Yes
Finally put together my 3d printer so time for some cases for stuff
"Hannah Montana Linux is a unix-like Linux Operating System based on Kubuntu."
It ships with GUI... need to stip that before I try to use it for HA
Me? Im using a modded creality 10 s5 - just never got to putting it together cause its so huge
@light trout do it!
I remember doing that and the look on peoples faces when their mouse started working again. It was like you had cured cancer.
Played CS on those things... At least I had an excuse back then
I remember Red Star Linux the NK version o Linux
Oh gosh
I responded to the past again
My mouse has a ball :)
Trackballs for the win
Have to take it out and clean it occasionally toi
Trackball.. you pervert
Enjoy your RSI :p
Normal mice use your wrist to move. Trackballs use your fingers which are built repetive small movements better
Plus it has a 30 degree tilt which is awesome too
It's fun watching people try to move the whole mouse too when they use my computer
Yeah , the whole RSI thing I've never got, had friends over the years who got it multiple times, but I've never had issues,guess I just know how to use a mouse ๐
Tried trackball a few times, hated it, tried the joystick mouse as well,hated that even more ๐
Did a nasty job on my wrist a few years ago with RSI, and started using a Logitech Marble Trackball. Find a normal mouse weird these days.
guys any help? I'm using the hue emulation with alexa, i see the http page endpoints but alexa doesn't see any devices, I have expose_by_default: false and then
light.kitchen:
name: "Kitchen lights"
hidden: false
I should be able to discover my kitchen light via Alexa now right?
Btw @light trout someone made a video about HACS, it looked like it was filmed on a boat ๐
it was ๐
edit: moved to "homeassistant support" section
@hearty depot have you tested the latest YT sensor?
Nope not yet - Fighting to hard with my tasker stuff
get less tasks ๐คท
I'm deam stubborn - Some thigs have to work - and even when I have no clue how I just have to try untill I'm furios
I can recommend breathing
NO no no no , stay away from that!
you mean that I have enough oxygen in my muscles to beat the shit out of the Monitor?
"death Breathers"
beating monitors was more fun when we had CRT, stuff didn't break and your hurt your knuckles ๐คฃ
Got 2 Pi Zeros laying around for Monitor - Good tip for setting them up fast at once?
Looked first at puttet - but I think thats not a tool for this
carefully
does the pi zero support pxeboot or is that the 3b+ only ? ๐ that would be fast
or.. pxeboot over wifi, that sounds. fun...
yeah... don't try ๐
only upgading all the preinstalled packages already going on my nerfes
automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate, automate!
reminds me of when I installed 750 nodes at once, and updated firmware and drivers of them at the same time via cluster-ssh ๐คฃ
that was fun, and nervewrecking
748 nodes said X, 2 nodes said Y
shiiit
๐
thank goodness I was onsite though
with a open tab from the project manager ๐คฃ
so 2 weeks... $3000 in food and alcohol ๐คฃ
Well invested money
well, the hardware plus installation was a lot more than that ๐ if I would guess it was $4.8 million or more
with discounts that is
by any chance anyone of you tesla owner ? im looking for tracking visualisation
I drive past 100 teslas every day minimium, but that doesn't help much ๐คฃ
I love the idea of electric cars
But I feel we should be getting away from the concept of personal car ownership
Although I wouldn't trust a company like Uber to lead the auto taxi car pooling revolution
In Norway we have subscriptions for cars available
So you just pay a fixed monthly price and can pick up any car that is available in a pool
We do? ๐
Think there are atleast 5 different companies that do it
Oh.. cool ๐คฃ
Hertz bilpool, nsb pool, nabobil are the ones that come to mind
Or something along those lines
Did not know that, but I don't think I have driven a car in about 2 years ๐
I've driven 400.000 kilometres in the last 10 years, I should know about all options ๐
I've taken public transportation 15 times in those 10 years though ๐
Think of the environment ๐ฎ
My greenhouse is doing fine!
Atta boy๐คฃ
I have no shame in my travel when I talk to people who do sales and fly 5 trips per week
Or my friend who worked with oil platform automations, he was diamond member in all airlines basically
Agreed to be docked $50.000 per year in pay to have half of the travel days per year
๐
Did you hear that unge hรธyre wants to limit the number of flights pr person to 3?
Yearly
Lol, please commit seppuku ๐
That is the problem with the Norwegian government atm, they are only young people who live in the city center and want to save the world, without ever being outside of the city to see the infrastructure of the rest of the country, and that's why the government is bleeding money because they subsidise electric cars by over 50%, which doesn't help anybody except the people who already have loads of money or live in the city and shouldn't have a car anyway ๐
You only say that because you live (just) outside the city! ๐คฃ
Heck, I saw an article about a 19 year old driving a Tesla while being a student at a Norwegian university, she was upset that she had to pay to park at the university, and there wasn't even any charging options available!
๐คฆโโ๏ธโผ๏ธ
And another about a student who was upset about living in the subsidised student building and wasn't allowed to charge her car with a extension cord from the kitchen window!
Yes to more late stage (up to 25 years after birth) abortions ๐
Deam - An Image write had an I/O error on my last sd card ๐
now my OS dont detect this deam thing anymore
tipp for fix?
Buy a new SD card ๐
Realy already Broken?
That is why I don't run on SD cards๐
I dont think that a Pi Zero takes an ssd
mhmmmmm... I could try to boot from an usb drive - got some sticks with microusb laying around
@clear ferry Do you run a raspberry pi? via an ssd?
@dark swallow no, venv on esxi vm
ah I was going to say
Honestly wish I could run HA on more capable device like a nuc or something just don't have the money
I do however have an old Mac Mini from like '08 but honestly specs are basically just slightly better than the pi 3b+
Any desktop you find in a recycling bin will probably be more unf than a pi ๐
True! I am so disappointed I missed my university's recycling day
Also @clear ferry since recent updates I have noticed that the "Configuration validation" check takes a very long time to run, is that normal? Or is something up?
๐คท
@clear ferry what should i make for dinner?
Finnbiff, or whale steaks
@clear ferry I tried adding whale_steaks: to configuration.yaml, but I got error ๐ฆ
That works here
@clear ferry yeah that's what I figured
I just had an amazing idea
I should hook Home Assistant into Rain Meter on my Desktop
that way I don't need to keep chrome open 24/7
Someone is using the Monitor script with tiles or so?
I found the BT adresses with my phone no problem - but I dont get Monitor yet
Not tiles, but another BT beacon
I just had it set up (as it does by default) to report every beacon it sees, and then play around with the beacon to get it to report
Then I stuck the beacon in a metal box (moved it out of range) to ensure I'd really picked up the right address ๐
as known static adress I guess?
ok then I'm not wrong atm. and also the pure mac adress or the funny Characteristic's?
๐คฆ set everything right but forgot the -b flag
rather asking .. do you use the -b flag?
used monitor the last time when it just came out. but my HA pi didnt handled the extra load well ๐คฃ Lot has happend hardware wise
Yeah, I run it on other systems, that provide better coverage of the house
Things I actually dont have to know - at least 3 pairs of bose Headphones are in my neighbourhood
Nice.
Fu getting thousends of connects and disconnects from the monitor pi in the mqtt broker ๐ค
Huh
Is it reporting data?
or just smashing it's head against a wall tryi ng to connect?
round about this way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQFV1lxVNZU
The title pretty much sums up the video in a nutshell ;P Anywayz... If you can stand being "Ralph'd" for the whole 15 minutes I'll personally give you a cook...
sending something - dropping connection connecting send.... rinse and repeat
Hmmm
I'm distracted with my own trouble shooting atm
My pi has disconected from my wifi
So now I do the power switch russian roulette or lug a monitor and keyboard over it
gonna plug the fucking thing in at this rate
Mmm Cray just sold a 1exabyte storage system ๐
I don't know what that means. I'm scared
We need an adult!
We've added go-faster-stripes to the server ๐ค
Dodgeeee
Super cold this morning
4 degrees
This is the part where atxbyea says something about minus 40 degrees
:D
I didn't picture it getting that cold over there for some reason
still got fairly warm days by the looks of it
Back in my day we didn't have positive degrees as the temperature never went over 0
Water was a myth. There was just Ice and Warmer Ice after you chewed on it a b it
Then you city folk came and heated everything up with your fancy FIRE and flint
and ruined everything
This has been your Substitute atxbyea
lol
@hushed basalt what do you mean, we have -35c here in winter ๐ ๐ค
oops thought I was in it
here I will clean it up
Great bands, great tribute... Rest in peace Syd, Richard, Mike....
Lol! For some reason Foxit PDF reader won't print on my computer today, so I'm opening a pdf in adobe reader instead... While waiting for that to happen, I entertain myself by opening the same document in foxit over and over again... but lose interest after 20 times or so...
Anyway, Adobe reader finally pops up and asks me "Do you wish to make Adobe Reader your default PDF document reader"?
Lol yeah Adobe are pretty hot trash at software development
And crazy insane pricing
Would you like electronic signatures. That will be $4 million dollars per month per user, paid 3 years in advance.
I have had all software I need included at work for the last two decades, and before that I was a warezking, so I don't know what you are talking about @hushed basalt ๐
Adobe loves their corporate pricing
I suspect an employee can cost a company more in SaaS licensing than their salary haha
Yeah, we have all their products available, I enjoyed the pdf editor software years ago to make customer questioners and similar
I have Acrobat IX I think with my scanner
The one before they changed to that DC cartoony rubbish
We used to be 350.000 employees, now that we are closer to 50.000 I suspect it isn't as good discounted anymore ๐
Thatโs a big ol company
Was*
Lol it did throw me a second
a little bit of help on this please cause my english is not helping me
what is the difference between the next rising and the next dawn?
is it that dawn is the first morning light but the sun comes after in the rising ?
Check your language's Wikipedia page for Dawn (and Dusk)
Dawn comes before the sun rises, as the sky is no longer totally dark
Civil dawn is -6 degrees, just as Civil dusk is -6 degrees
Yeah the Greek Wiki did the trick @clever mortar thanks - it's a good thing HA also supports next_rising then
Mmmmm moussaka ๐ฌ๐ท
Maybe you can help me @normal ferry I was in a Greek restaurant in London years ago, I asked for Sprite to drink, but the waiter only said they had a Greek version, and brought that out, but I never got the name, but it was delicious ๐
Hmm that's weird. Living in Greece since I was 0 years old and now being 30 (soon to be 31) I always drank Sprite - never had an alternative myself. So this thing he gave you was a greek branded, similar tasting Sprite ?
@clear ferry
Some places here only offer Australian drinks but its not common
So maybe just chance
Yes, it was Greek letters on the bottle and tasted like Sprite only sweeter
Might have been from one of the islands perhaps
I can only think of one (or rather one and a half) Greek company(ies) that makes refreshments that are alternatives to well-known brands such as Coca cola, Fanta etc
The logo was even yellow and green ๐
one is ฮฮฮ (pronounced IVI): https://www.ivi.gr/index.php/el/softdrinks-el the website is only in greek but I gave you the direct link to its refreshments
the other is ฮฮจฮ (pronounced EPSA): https://epsa.gr/ and it has a language option for 'english' on the left
I should have taken a picture
Double mountain dew
but I don't think that either of them have a Sprite alternative
could have been very local
Was a small plastic bottle, probably 0.4 or less, and green bottle ๐ค
or could have been a greek store owner talking shit - I mean I'm proud where I come from - but we can be real scallywags at times ๐
But the letters were Greek, so it has to be from somewhere down there
yeah perhaps - could you take a look at the websites I sent you? they have like 8 products in total ๐
if it's not there
maybe it was something very local as @ocean mirage said
I only recently learnt of some drinks we have here in some places
Its odd, but any soft drink (soda) branding that isn't one of the big brands just looks weird
Oh! @clear ferry could it have been a LOUX ? https://www.loux.gr/index.php/en/products/soft-drinks
ฮฮฟฯ ฮพ - ฮฆฯ ฯฮนฮบฮฎ ฮฮปฮปฮทฮฝฮนฮบฮฎ ฮฯฯฮปฮฑฯ ฯฮท
I expected there to be more greek alphabet on those bottles
In Greece there is - but I assume since they export products abroad they turn letters to latin so as to market better
ah right
So you buy an EPSA - I buy an ฮฮจฮ and we' re drinking the same stuff
makes sense
Yes!
The gazoza one
ah right! yeah LOUKS is fairly known ok I won't talk shit about it
when serving in the military (obligatory for greek men - not my regular job)
the vending machines had LOUKS only
Oh you have mandatory service? For how long?
must've drank about 90 liters of those things
9 months
but it varies depending on several circumstances
We have mandatory too, but the last 20 years most people who don't want to don't have to
But women are also called into service
that should be fun ! ๐
Where are you again atx? Somewhere northern europe right?
woman with an M4 and on her period
Norway ๐
good luck with that ๐
nowadays it's just accepted. used to be strict but the army has gotten very loose - mobile technology attributed a lot to that. now most youngsters go there to take selfies and post on instagram their uniforms and guns
normally they forbid it - but you can't have sargeants body search you for mobile devices day and night
so they just look the other way
Yeah that makes a lot of sense
I was supposed to be in military intelligence, but they started calling me in when I was 17, and I was busy with school till I was 21, then they gave up and sent me a letter that I was relieved of duty, unless I became a priest or a veterinarian ๐
why unless those jobs?
๐ฎ yeah why?!
Because they need both a lot, vet for the horses and dogs and priests since most of Norway is relaxed religious we don't have an abundance of priests
horses eh, interesting
Not gonna lie, it has crossed my mind how easy it would be to be an army priest and make that good money
but I couldn't do that cause it'd be a lie
I've told the church to remove me from their members list three times, because they are sneaky bastards and just re add you as a member and say woops clerical error
Fucking clerics
at least in spite of these two professions you have a way out. for us there is no way out. it's 9 months or more (14 or 18) and you cannot do anything , they even replace your ID with a military ID which you cannot use anywhere without getting noticed (i.e. airports to get out of country ๐ )
the only shenanigans are:
double citizenship (Other & Greek) : 3 months
having 1 parent due to divorce: 8 months
having 1 parent due to death: 6 months
proclaiming yourself as mentally ill (aka crrrRRrrrazy) and presenting papers that show medication treatment: 0 months but really really really tiring process
That is really strict, who are the Greeks afraid of still? The Turks?
Or is it just tradition?
Well not only the Turks , the Turks as well I'd say. Generally the Balkans are not a friendly place towards Greeks. In short , NO ONE LIKES US ๐ We 're like the kid with the last piece of candy in the schoolyard
I assume a lot of the older people who have gone through the same thing would argue that its good for young people, character building and all that
Albanians also want a piece of Northwestern Greece
I like you ๐
Bulgarians are not fond of us either
We like you guys but we might be a bit far away to help
and Turks want a piece of our islands and Northeastern Greece
Most Popular kid in class
yeah something like that
My parents live up north, and they are still weary of the Russians, but what would Russia want with a mostly empty part of the country without any infrastructure I say to them ๐
Generally a lot of politics , I can never tell what someone may need from a piece of land. Expansion wasn't my strong suit like - ever.
But the basic premise is the bigger you are the stronger you are (?)
ok.. the level of nerdyness is rising
Then I must be strong, cause I'm a fat bastard ๐ ๐ค
nice one @hearty depot
Gotta go throw some schnitzels in the frying pan - be back soon
Schnitzel, jawohl!
What are you all using for sound and mics throughout the house? Looking to add mics around the house for voice commands and speakers for announcements and things
What is the concencsus on good, easy, economical answer to this need?
Backup server? coward!
That's even worse ๐
I love the customers who buy double the servers and have a cold site, that they never end up using, nor testing ๐
Testing is for other people
I know a company that didn't... they found out the hard way they couldn't restore... the rest as they say is history
Remember the sad tale of Myspace which lost everything pre 2016
Hehe - Only upgrading the main one--- For 2 monts now - still to lazy to backup my configuration files
I saved the data of a multiple TB storage system 10 years ago with a hairdryer, because someone didn't want to buy a second San ๐คท
They bought the second one after that....
And let me guess, it sat in the boxes for another 5 years...
McAtxbyea
No, they installed it immediately ๐
๐ค waits for punchline of them not turning it on
I've rolled in a $4mill storage system at a customer that hasn't been even powered on before being decommissioned multiple times though ๐คท
No punchline to the previous story, just the fact that we actually saved all data with a hairdryer and fast reflexes ๐
lol can even make an oneliner out of it sudo apt-get install figlet && figlet -c "I'm a Idiot" > ~/banner && echo "cat banner" >> ~/.bashrc
๐คฃ
only downside - I dont know how to check for the cat line in bashrc
Anyone experiencing issues connecting to the HA cloud?
That's a #cloud-archived question @clear mirage
(aka, please read the channel topics)
@hushed basalt drying 60 drives that were drenched in water ๐
The disk shelves looked like a Christmas tree when I arrived
BuT rAiD iS a BaCKup RiGht?
I want a few 45 drive cases Backblaze style
Why not 7 of them in a ceph cluster
Hell why not 56 drives
All 12TB enterprise SAS drives too
Tell my wife sorry I spent the house deposit on datahoarding
Looks like that might be the same chassis we use for Apollo 4500 servers
I'm not sure I just googled high density storage lol
Don't even need a rack for them
Just stand them upright and stick rack mount brackets on them
They are the rack
I once spoke to a DIT guy who needed a raid for his mobile cart rack for onset
He bought some 1u Lacie monstrosity. 8 bays
He didn't realise it was like 900mm deep
His cart got a free shelf :D
Google calendar just kaboomed, and my HA log is full of errors... first world problems ๐
Nice new (to me) Volvo XC60 downstairs ๐ Then I spot the Volvo integration in HA!
Oooh
I want to get a volvo
so many safety features
but so expensive
Though I also want to get a Smart Car because it's cute
This is why my mom decided what car I got.
The XC60 is really really nice to drive ๐
Upgraded from a Passat Estate to this.
@clever mortar yea at 10:38 EST. It caused such a pounding that HA banned the IP, which because I use a reverse proxy, banned everything while using the internal docker IP. ๐
Here I am troubleshooting external connection issues and its the damn ban_ip.yaml
however, google cal is def broken and luckily the component after restart is not pounding everything again.
Google calendar on the web is 404ing ๐
@onyx gorge A while back an ex-collegue wrote a script to do auto banning of "malicious" ips. Unfortunately, he didn't whitelist 127.0.0.1
for "unusual traffic" lol
Strange things happen when localhost is dropping traffic.
@strange vapor yea, unfortunately because I use docker, im sorta in this boat.
ngnix will use 172.18.x.x
anything external comes in to the proxy via that IP
i mean, whatever. At least I know it works and when I can't get to my site, I know theres a problem
Make use of the X-Forwarded-For header to get the real ip?
idk, I'll leave it for now. I would think a surge of 500s from google cal shouldnt hit HA authentication like that to ban the IP though.
I think thats the real issue
why is HA banning ANY IP just because it is getting 500s from an external source
and I know it happened because my logs indicate it in both ngnix and HA
I've seen zero evidence of HA blocking anything, but that's a conversation for #330944238910963714
for me, I have about 30 calendars. In HA logs I see the IP was banned at 10:47:36. In ngnix, the logs say it was getting 500s from google. Then at 10:47:30 I saw 401, 401, then a 403 at exactly 10:47:37.
yes, a lot of calendars. Maybe not that many but its a lot. And used for various things.
so maybe because of the amount I have it hit the limit.
soon as I deleted the ip_bans.yaml, all good. But as it has been indicated, cal is broken on the G side.

but someone offered to fund my 1Password subscription if I liked it. I have to say it's rather nice
aaww - sed is very neat
... as a 1password alternative or just in general?
Just in general I think. I was using KeePass Before and they reccomended it as it worked very well for them.
I use KeePass. No issues.
Might just go back to that. I've got it set up to sync over drop box and to my phone
Just go back to Post It notes

Lol. the feeling of the stare of the store clerk when a bald person (me) ask where the hairspray is. Hey its the 3d printing :p
I want to get a 3D printer at somepoint
the ability to make little cases for my projects sounds so cool
What kind of line? might be able to just fix it yourself if you are keen
2 days not so bad
Are you on FTTN
Me? Yes
Oof, I just saw a Reddit post that Poland is going to have its hottest summer in 200 years
40 degrees for some days
Night temperatures of 27
@ocean mirage I agree think that it was a bit of cop out. Hopefully I can get a tech out today
@hushed basalt I have ATT Uverse internet, and it is usually pretty reliable
What technology though
Thatโs pretty hot for them Iโd have to guess atx
@hushed basalt its fiber
Yea the local att office is about a mile from me
I got the ATT uverse 75, 75mbs speed
75 up and down?
75 down, but for me it works fine. And it's only $55 usd a month
75b up, 75mb down
Smallest I can get now is 100/100 I think, I opted for the 500/500 because the 1000/1000 was too expensive
Think I pay 80$ per month, the 1000 was 180$ I think
Not bad for me I'm happy with what i got and it does the job. Although i did get my own router for my HA stuff.
So annoying not having internet, and since I stream my TV shows I cant even watch TV.
I have TV over fiber, think I pay $50 per month for 80 channels and cloud archive, but I have considered just scrapping it since I mostly watch stuff on Plex or Netflix anyway ๐คท
VDSL, hello 2010 ๐
Yea I comcast local channels only which I barely use.
Lol.
ATT offered me a deal when I moved to my new place and i got faster internet for the same price I was paying for my previous service
Hi, do you know when 0.95 will be released? What is the release cycle of HA? Thank you
most of the time you see it here
https://rc.home-assistant.io/
but not today - next week should be the next release ( 3 week cycle)
@clear mirage lol I have AT&T Uverse as well and I am in a really developed part of Chicagoland and the fastest they offer me is the 50mbps I have! No fiber or anything else!
@dark swallow lol wow. I'm in northern part of Oakland County, MI in small town called Holly, and we have 75. Just wish it would work.
lol yeah it's super annoying because I would switch but Comcast is the only competition and they offer literally the same thing at the same rates! It's infuriating!
And its not like they don't have some fiber runs out towards me because I know businesses get fiber right down outside of my neighborhood
Also when I log into my account I see xxGB used of unlimited but then when I look at the plan fine print I find this . The "limit" is one terabyte and if I go over I have to pay $10 for 50Gb and its added each time I go over not to exceed $100 so there is a limit! Crazy high and I will probably never reach it but still!
Limits of internet usage? What is this ? 1999 ๐ ๐
In AT&T's defense it is "unlimited" if you don't read the fine print!
We used to have limits back when we had ADSL 1Mbit connections in the early 2000s
And I mean come on they have had a dramatic increase over the last few years in bandwidth with literally no motivation to improve the infrastructure so limits make sense!
If only there was a federal organization that could regulate this largely unregulated industry, sign...
Yeah, I would pass that limit easily, I pass 30-80GB through my router daily
1TB seems to be 33GB per day
Lol and then you would spend another $100 to get cut off after another 6 days
what uses so much of your daily bandwidth?
but the best part is if you don't look hard you think you have unlimited data! This is another screencap from my account
Torrent downloads, Plex streaming to friends, FTP host with work stuff I share with customers and partners, and I host a few seperate web sites for old wow guilds and stuff
Figured torrent and plex usage lol! Literally everyone I know that does that chew through so much data!
The absolute best part of my AT&T situation is I HAVE to use their Modem/Router if I also want their TV services
I tried to use their router just as a modem and for the tv stuff but nope they block you from doing stuff like that and I have even heard they will terminate your contract with them because it breaks the terms!
You can use your own router but all internet has to be routed through theirs first then to yours
I ditched my ISP router, then I couldn't use IPTV, so I just passed the wan to the TV box directly via a seperate vlan and that works nicely
Because I can get 6 external ips anyway ๐
Lol that's great! Also they lock down basically all of the router settings! I tried to set up hassio for external use and since it wasn't one of their prebuilt port forwarding options they won't let me do it
Yeah, I haven't run an ISP router in over 20 years, I always find a way around ๐ค
They "allow" you to setup custom port forwarding settings but don't actually forward the ports if it doesn't match the rules they set. So it looks like it should all work but doesn't and when you try to talk to AT&T about it they say you can do that by paying them more money!
I just want actual competition in the internet market in America!
lol I put up a tab with Home Assistant thinking it was clever with a sim card so I could give alarms if the internet is down. Today I had 7 telemarketers calling home assistant :p
Oh yeah I lied the actual best part of my ISP is that I would pay $60 for my 50Mbps speeds but I pay $30 because of a "promotion" or whatever bullshit, the other plan I can switch to is 5Mbps! for $50!!! so 10x reduction in speed for $10 less the cost! Seems alright to me!
@late gate You need to set up something that'll direct the calls to your own VOIP PBX where you can then mess with them ๐
@clever mortar If im bored one time, for now I think I have to figure out how to block all calls to the tab :p
I almost fell off the sofa. Never expected the tab to start ringing
That would be amazing!
@clever mortar I was planning to do that when I still had a IP based landline, send them to a MP3 of screeching monkeys
๐คฃ
dont give me ideas now :p
That is too funny. It's always fun to have fun with telemarketers. I think I got my situation almost resolved. I actually have mine set up to where the att router just forwards the internet to my personal router. When I was setting up some tasmotized switches I came across the surprise that the ATT router gives you a limit of 15 or so static ips
I just don't pick up the phone
I find the whole "Telemarketer fucking with" thing kind of childish.
Now if you could fuck with the guys who run the company instead of the schmoe on the phone. Then I might be more in your corner

@dark swallow comcast's 1TB is bullshit. They say it's due to a "DRAMATIC INCREASE" but then say it's a small number of users. Well, is it a problem or isn't it? โAlexa nuke sad leftover pizzaโ
a smart microwave makes literally zero sense
you have to walk over to it to put whatever you want to heat in the microwave
not to mention that when you microwave, food is generally hot outside, and cold inside!
unless you make the whole food super hot, which is another problem

some of the newer ones are supposed to have infrared sensors to check if the food is cooked evenly... that would be a smart microwave!
This item does not ship to Finland, so sad. Part of me still thinks I somehow need that...
Just wow. And its only $60, probably couldn't cook a slice of pizza

Anyone have an HTPC setup?
Getting a little frustrated with trying to run an HTPC on Linux with streaming services like Hulu/Netflix, as there aren't any good solutions to use them
Curious if anyone has tried running AndroidTV in an emulator and if using official Netflix/Hulu apps through that would provide better results than using Kodi or the web browser
every 3 week now I think
I run it on Windows but I'm going to move to a Roku once I get a receiver setup for the living room

Netflix and Plex were working great in Kodi.. until Netflix stopped working :<
I haven't used Kodi, or XBMC as it was earlier since... 2004
Netflix no longer works with Kodi?
There seems to have been some issue yesterday that should be fixed soon, but for me Kodi has been by far the best solution for watching stuff on Viaplay for example. It's the only platform that allows me to force a minimum quality for the streams, which makes the whole experience much nicer. I don't use Netflix so I can't say anything about how it works, but I tested it at some point and it seemed okay and better than on a Panasonic TV I've used it on.
I think netflix goes hard on DRM
Which means anything except certified devices or browsers will always be a second class experience
unless something's changed very recently that's not the case with the latest version of Kodi which works just fine with DRM stuff
compared to my Chromecast device for example, the experience with Viaplay is much better on Kodi
To be honest I haven't used Kodi in a ling time
Netflix wasn't great on linux though
Due to DRM
@north ether apple TV
There's been a change since, and drm should not be an issue anymore. YouTube (1080p/4k), Netflix and Viaplay have all worked for me without a glitch on Kodi running on both a Windows PC and a Linux based CoreElec on a Chinese tvbox
Out of your day-to-day experience which weather platform would you suggest for HA? yr, dark_sky or something else?
In the UK, Dark Sky or Met Office
I'll give dark sky a try (though I'm not in UK) - would you recommend the platform component or the sensor ?
Yes ๐
Depends on what you want to do with it really
The sensor gives you fine grained control, the weather component not so much
The weather component "just works" with the Weather card in #frontend-archived
The sensor doesn't (but there is a very nice custom card)
Aaaaaw those trade-offs! ๐ฉ I'm fan of fine grained control on the one hand - on the other hand the reason I started looking into weather platforms in the first place is because I wanted to try the default weather card of #frontend-archived
Use both
Just ensure that you don't update often enough to go over the free limits
Yes that's what I was thinking
Need to do the update interval math

Very nice improvements @flat lintel , had one more suggestion to consider (if it's easy to do). Maybe the huge ass instructional block at the top of the page should not appear for logged out users / guests? Line of thinking on this is that there's users who either lurk or find these posts via Google search and that big ass banner with animated gif is quite annoying and distracting, especially on mobile. And if you think about it that info is only relevant to those who have an account in the first place - guests who don't even have an account yet shouldn't need to see things about how to post codeblocks etc until they actually register and log in first IMO.
sure, was thinking to remove it now that we have the popup for code formatting + the welcome to HA forums post is globally pinned
@clever mortar Wrote the post though so I think at least he should okay removing the top block
Tinkerer is away for 3h 41m 46s with a message :point_right: So... this box... smaller on the outside innit.
Fair enough. I'm not totally opposed to the idea behind the banner, just would rather it appear in more relevant scenarios (like newly registered accounts). I think it's kinda obnoxious to show a large animated gif at the top of the page for users who don't even have an account yet. Plus it's a 216 KB file which can add significant amount of page load time.
i agree entirely about the code formatting bit of the banner
that should be removed
which would leave just the link to the "help us help you" post
but that post is also pinned globally, meaning it appears at the top of topics lists until users view it

Someone meiht know if i can use the sed lookup with another command? like
sed 's/iface\ (ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)\ inet\ dhcp\ /###Hooray##/g' /etc/network/interfaces
sed 's/iface\ $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)\ inet\ dhcp\ /###Hooray##/g' /etc/network/interfaces
Thanks! - What did I do wrong? (besides $)
Well, that's the key thing for running another process and substituting the output
echo $(date)
``` will print the output of the date command
You have no pending dates
You can also do the following, assuming there's supposed to be / in there for a path
sed 's=iface/$(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp)/inet/dhcp/=###Hooray##=g' /etc/network/interfaces
You don't have to use / as the separator in sed, it's just convention
Thourght its working - but yet it doesnt
https://hastebin.com/urajanosux.coffeescript
iface $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp) inet dhcp=iface $(ls /sys/class/net | grep enp) inet static=g
๐ค
You're missing / in there
Lots of them
Or have you changed what you're doing?
What's your actual goal here?
when I would see them ๐คฃ
look into /etc/network/interfaces, search for the actuall ethernet interface, check if its using dhcp - replacing it with static
then looking for the new string with static and append the static config
Ah, then...
I'd write a script. The script would iterate over each file, rather than trying to work on them all at once.
its only the /etc/network/interfaces file - only copyed it because I bet that I screw something up in the process
welll - thats only that I can see the changes right away
(first time ever I read deliberate ๐ )
Hell its hauting me even in shell - not only yaml
well reboot did the trick
Should I create the keys with user root or user pi on the rsnapshot server?
Is there a checksum function or something along those lines?
md5sum
yes, they are the same
Just to be clear, the sshd_conf-file I had to edit on the home-assistant server, right?
I guess, wouldn't make much sense otherwise ๐
Btw both systems running on raspbian
hello fam, am havving an issue anyone free to help?
Just ask your question and someone might answer if they can.
am trying to connect my home assistant remotely i did install duckdns and followed the steps did the port forwarding part duckdns gets updated on ma external ip and all good but i still cant access my home assistant remotly
i dont use hassio but did you set up ssl
you mean did i port forward ssl?
yes and yes
@tawny pebble MAybe it's better to continue here ๐
agree ๐
I did create the keys wih user "pi" and sudo
on Host A
That did create the keys in the root directory of Host A
sudo creates the key for root user in user "Frank" environment. you should avoid that
well, ok then - so let's continue with root.
ok, so then recreate the keys with user root (via sudo su) on Host A?
@half sable dont dm ....others may help as i dont use hassio ....but you set up ssl i was checking that you forwarded 443 to 8123 to correct ip
yes, elevate to root (sudo -i)
ok
and then create the key:
ssh-keygen -t rsa 2048
i'm going by memory and it fails sometime :
ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048
nope
ok
wait till you get past 50 years ....it fails all the time ๐
yes, only the public key
or you could use the command ssh-copd-id
# ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub root@host
no if you copied it correctly there's no need
No I meant the Key from the guide
there are several ways to copy it. all in all, it's a few rows of text inside a file
I've got two keys in there now, the one I just copied and the one which is not working from the guide
oh yes, just use this last key you created
ok
its name should be id_rsa if you didn't change it.
cool, run ssh yourhost
ok, as user root from host a?
if both the user have the same name, you can only use the host without user@ ๐
๐ ๐ sorry my bad.
just run
ssh ip.of.your.host as root of A.
ok
It want's a password
in the sshd_config file the line "PubkeyAuthentification yes" is commented out
Is that correct?
what's your system(s) ? never seen that commented out. it should not be.
let me check in my system (i do not use pub key though)
Both systems running raspbian
Don't mind, I deleted the # and killed the sshd process, still want's a password
alright, in one of my system that's commented out as well. never noticed, but i don't use public key here so wasn't sure.
don't kill it :/
systemctl restart sshd.service
(maybe raspbian still uses init, if the above doesn't work:
service sshd restart)
i try to use pub key on my system, give me 2 minutes that i'll try but i run debian and ubuntu.
No problem
When trying to restart teh service I get the message Unit sshd.service not found with both commands
alright it works on my system.
write the password, you only type it once
then it's probably ssh and not sshd
I don't have a root password
it's the same passw you use when you run sudo
It doesn't ask for one ๐
lol ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ never used raspbian, and after this i will probably never use it
my user is pi and it never asks for a root password when using sudo
it just does what i type
$
ok, it's a user non-root but it's possible it has root privileges, that's why when you use sudo it doesn't ask for password.
This means that you could avoid using root and connect them both through the pi user.
try repeating the steps for the ssh-key for pi
ok
on system A:
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048
$ ssh-copy-id -i .ssh/id_rsa.pub pi@system.B.its.ip
$ ssh ip.of.B
if ask for password, type the pi's of system B
on your second command it doens't find the "ID file"
Failed to open ID file No such file or directory
Hehe - just automated that a day ago
yeah maybe because i wrote the command as you user was in his home directory -i .ssh/blabla
working?? nice ๐
ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/file.key.pub pi@${ipadress}
ls .ssh
Cmd+c
Or does it ask you for an password?
I'll modify my rsnapshot ocnfig and let's see if it works then ๐
@hearty depot Sorry my bad, was missing a character for the command to complete
You know how to edit the sshd_config ?
You could test out my script (actually one of my first ๐คฃ)
Ok, I now can ssh into my Host B without being asked for a password, but rsnapshot still want's the password for pi@HostB
run the script as user pi, not root
That's what I was doing ๐
@hearty depot uhmm you sure? not need i think :/
I just jumped in - so I don't got all infos
@amber ice there's a optional config file in .ssh
As I said I can ssh into Host B from command line without being asked for a pw
@hearty depot no problem ๐ thanks for helping here tho! 100% appreciated (:
@amber ice it is a script, this one of rsnapshot you are running, right? it's not single command
rsnapshot is being run from pi
See above ๐
ok, let me try that then ๐
Only root can set the ownership of files
And you want that in a backup
At no point in any of this should you be using pi
(other than to run commands with sudo setting it all up)
Ok, I' think I can try to do the steps that now at least got the passworldess ssh going for user root again
@tawny pebble I think it's a command
I'll try to do the steps again but now with user root
On host b - try to run
sudo sed -i 's/#PubkeyAuthentication\ yes/PubkeyAuthentication\ yes/g' /etc/ssh/sshd_config
You might want to try rclone instead then, and back up to a cloud service
It's slightly more straightforward
I've recreated the keys for user root copied to public key over to the home assistant server and now I' stuck again at ssh wanting to know the pw
You are trying to ssh from root to root@?
from root to "ssh myip"
Right, that defaults to the same account
but not from root "ssh root@myip"
So... did you yet try ssh -v?
no, what's that?
That thing I posted twice about before ๐
Try ssh -v myip
Then use a code share site to share the output
sorry, must have missed that
ok, give me one sec
I hope there's no sensitive information in there
There isn't, just account names and IPs
You share an IP range with about 50% of the planet ๐
Ok, the far end doesn't like either key you have
You might find useful information in /var/log/auth.log on the far end
"User root authorized keys /root/.ssh/authorized_keys is not a regular file"
on the hass-pi?
On the remote host, the one that log line is from ๐
Ok
Then copy the file over so that it's a file there
Copy the id_rsa.pub to /root/.ssh?
No
I'm really sorry
Copy the .pub file to that folder, as authorized_keys
That directory you created above
That must be a file
so I rename the file?
Sounds like somewhere along the way you mistyped some commands ๐
Now you know what places to look for useful error messages though
I had a problem with your copy command from user pi tp root on the remote system
I recreated to folder structure and was assuming it was a directory
Also big thanks to @tawny pebble
and @hearty depot
Now I gotta figure out a command line sensor telling me the date of the last created backup ๐ But I'm figuring this out myself this time ๐ Bye
Good news, with rsnapshot that should be trivial
Let's see D:
I would go down the "cmd_postexec" path, and publish something to my mqtt broker
Better prepare ๐
rsnapshot? wow. that brings back nightmares.
the slowest backup software ever made.
It's rsync, so...
Anyway, at most home users's data volumes, the speed isn't important
That said, 25 minutes for 6 or so TB and a half dozen hosts (including a handful of Pis)... I'm fine with that "slow" ๐
seriously? i would kill myself using rsnapshot with 6tb.
use borg or zfs or btrfs ...not rsnapshot
zfs and btrfs are file systems, not backup tools ๐
that depends, you can block copy snapshots remotely.
Nice thing about rsnapshot though is that checking your backups is trivial
so yes, ,they are backup tools
And yes, there's lots of options, but rsync is pretty universal, and it works, even if you think it's slow
I think it's slow? Its for a fact slow ๐
For a commercial setup, I'd care, maybe
true that it's universal and dead simple.
For home use... as I said, 6 TB in 20 minutes... I'm fine with that
Interesting. Last time i fork-lifted rsnapshot was on about a 4tb environment. took 12 hours to do backups. I think there were 10 days of retention
Initial backup ain't fast, but after that... no problems
replaced it with borg and increased retention to 1 year and backup times down to 2 hours.
There's loads of options, but as I said, I recommend rsnapshot because (a) universal, (b) ease of browsing the backups/verifying the restore
borg will also get you a lot longer retention with the same amount of space as well.
wait, i just remembered...
you can mount a borg repo as a filesystem
so its the same thing as rysnc!
I love their compatibility warnings though ๐
The only thing they didn't warn about was The End of Days
Hey, dumb question.. I'm trying to think through my first presence/motion detection-driven automation set for lighting.. is this the appropriate channel to discuss? Hi, a question about value templates.
I have this value template in one of my automatizations: {{ (now () - states.input_text.bed_status.last_changed) }} and I get the time in the format: 0:41:02.831564
How can I extract only the hour and the minutes figures?
I have been trying with split but I dot get the right syntax
this is more of a #330944238910963714 question. I'm not sure if this will help, but this is what I found for my TTS stating current time: {{ now().strftime('%H %M') }}
