At that price you could get three old desktops and have a test, Dev and prod environment for your HA π
He's right you know.
That youtube Psyweri makes a living off of getting milageing out of old junk
"I got this lap top for some pocket lint. Let's see if we can make it work with the power of EUCALYPTUS OIL"
heh, my production HA runs off a 2008 macbook
Tsk tsk π
@clear ferry Do you feel this is a quliaty worth almost 500 usd?
well... I have the same quality on my $20 cameras π
heck, I might have better quality
yeah thats is light day and night. I bought the doorbird cause of the POE and everyone said it was so good compared to ring. Got shocked by the quality
Yeah I need to return this and find an alternative
just sad nest is problematic noe with the api
off cloud stuff 4 lyfe
im working on it - I have to uninstalled nest thermostats and contacted amazon. they litterally said fu
What did you ask?
I asked if they would refund items that was sold under "works with nest" and alexa, when they wont after the api change. They still brand them as works with nest, but say its not their responsibility to confirm to the specs
but their chat is just overseas and they are reading a script. its like talking to a wall
This is kinda why I usually buy stuff here in Norway. Stores are actually responsible for false advertising. In the US it seems like they can do what they want. Just removing an API and advertised statements seem completely legal in the US with no responsibility
now you know why the US is lawsuit happy
yeah im not sure how true it is about the US lawsuit thingy, but we europeans got the view americans sue for everything
Be careful, somebody will sue you for that π
I can see why you'd feel that was a strong rebuttal
"Our website does not have to conform to reality. GOOD DAY SIR"
also I got my Sonoff wired up π
I feel pretty sketchy about how I did. I can see some copper when I take the plastic end bits off but it works.
haha, yeah. I dont think Nest thought through the legal aspect of their descision
I just feel the smart home scene get more and more segrated
like Yale Doorman who just released zigbee dongle for their smart locks, but with a secret key only released to "authroized" smart hubs
What are they worried somone is gonna plonk down at your house. Set up a hub. Connect to your key. some how guess your birthday that you put as the password for it and then open your house?
They'll save 2 hours and 100 bucks and buy a brick
yeah I bet 98% use their birthday since they require 6 digits. Its all about the money though - Here in Europe the security company Verisure (Securitas) got full dominanze of the marked when it comes to security, locks etc
Yet people move to america everyday and our military presence is worldwide ..... π€
Uh. Ok
Muurica, I have a standing job offer in Houston, but I don't feel like moving to the US would be a step up π€·
i've been offered a job as a teacher in shanghai more than once
i'd love to accept it but chinese internet is trash once you go outside of the firewall
The great π₯ πͺ of china
also good luck finding a decently sized apartment in shanghai that doesn't cost a fortune
Almost relevant : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QywH5lialsU
Is it me or is a raspi 3 to slow for ha?
Is a lada to slow for a F1 race?
for an F1 race yes, for a car race ? not neccesarily @light trout π
automations and stuff is great. but everything web is slow as dogshit
@void kite never had issues with web performance on the pi, and I have 100+ devices in HA, with quite a bit of automation, but I moved over to venv because of SD-card issues and I wanted better overall performance in all matters moving forward π€·
for example, clicking on a sensor, it takes ages before it shows the graph
lier! you never tried the web on a pi @clear ferry you are useing a real computer to browse it π
@void kite that isn't normal, what is the load on your pi ?
@light trout are you doubting my use of links to browse HA ? π€£
LOAD 4-core
1 min: 5.57
5 min: 5.50
15 min: 5.53
That's bad
only HA and some addons
probably frying eggs
I haven't seen loads like that even on high-performing oracle clusters π€£
i never understood the linux load thingys so
something is rotten in the state of @void kite
check that the power supply is good enough, could be that it underclock's itself
these are the loads of my ha venv 0.07, 0.09, 0.03
I've got 1.10859375 for 1m and 1.2890625 for 5m
2A is not enough
hmm, ill look for a better than.
53% iowait
Thanks for inspiring me to google gang
that ain't good
I'm gonna trouble shoot to get mine below 1.0
running influx or pihole @void kite ?
probably influx is the culprit
to bad i cant use my exsi server for ha
It feels like turning off influx and Pi-Hole didn't change anything :/
π¦ all supplys are 2A or less
What kinda computer are you using?
This is in the docs for a reason π
so it clocks back or something?
Input: 100-240v ~50/60Hz 0.3A
Output: 5V- - - 2500mA
it does, and it also increace the risk of SD card coruption
You can check Amazon/ Your E-Store of choice for a Raspiberry Pi power supply and you should be able to find a 2.5 Amp one
or you can check microcenter if you're in the US and live near one. They got truckfuls of em
Yeah, im ordering 3A model
@void kite you can't? I run ha under esxi
Rofl
The internet is so fast I never bring servers out of my garage for the last... 15 years..
Now I'm researching linux load. You've ruined my evening. π
@valid halo now that you saying that. I just looked in my freenas and its indeed wel below 1
@valid halo go down the rabbit hole of Linux performance, you'll be stuck for 5 years
I found a guy who went down the rabbit hole to find a change thats 25 years old
I work with a guy who is mentioned in the man files of openvms π€·
He wanted to find out why Linux Load included uninterruptables
so he dug through years worth of change logs and updates and archives to find some random guy in 1993 changed it
the internet was a nicer place back then
I doubt it
the guy included his address in Germany and email
also I'm a dum dum
Raspi 3B+ is a 4 core which means a score of 1.0 is fine? at least if I've found the correct reading material
It it goes above 4 then I'm in trouble
I have no idea how ITEAD has anyone use it's eWeLink App
It's sooooooo shit
Just preload TASMOTA
stupid company
I think I'm pushing the limits of what my little Synology NAS is capable of
I've got Home assistant, Plex, rclone, jenkins, paperless OCR, nzbget, sonarr, radarr, hydra, traefik, mqtt, icecast, mopidy, resilio, tautulli, etc all competing for resources :D
Ho le fuk, thats a lot
Plus I want to set up a ELK stack, plus consul
i got plex, sonarr, raddar, sabnzdb, tautulli, unfi running on a windows server vm. the synogy i have is just powerfull enought to spin disks
Ooh windows server
Have you thought of docker on a linux host
I don't think I'll run any VMs in my eventual homelab
i like the ease of use of windows for this. and the esxi machine is happly running it
i had induvidual ubuntu server vms before,
and freenas jails before that.
Docker is like a.. virtual machine lite
i have esxi, why should i run docker?
Because it's what all the Kewl Kids are Doing
People use docker on top of virtual machines all the time
it has a fancy icon and is missing a letter
Well shoot you so ld me DeKemp
I bought a brand of power tool because it was Bright Green
I am easily pleased
nvm, docker isnt missing a letter
Lol
but all new things do

Hello
One of these days i'm gonna impulse buy an HA controllable smart TV
because I keep losing the FUCKING REMOTE!
get an HA controllable reciever and use CEC on your TV instead π
Would you happen to know an example? Google is inconclusive on a what reciever to use.
Yamaha, Onkyo and denon all have homeassistant components
https://www.home-assistant.io/components/yamaha/ for example, the reciever should handle turning on the tv if the tv has HDMI CEC enabled as far as I understand
I appreciate your advice but from googling these various companies all of their products are 200+ dollars
I think a Broadlink mini is probably more my price range at this time
I think we have a reciever
but it's from the late 80s/early 90s
Have speakers too
sadly they all got unplugged when we had floors done
and I had no idea how ot rewire
so now they're in basement
yeah you ned a networked one for the awsome HA features
I gathered. Sadly I can't just think angry thoughts at my TV to shut up the ads for "OMEGA XL"
Larry King you have fallen so far...
I want to do the super expensive harmony remote and reciever with rokus on the TV, I have a DIY ambilight setup and if installed the reciever I could have tv backlighting for multiple components without needing a windows PC as my media front end
π
someone/something just turned all my lights on repeatedly. How can I tell the source?
I've quickly realized that this is not Smart Home assisting
Well, no π
Other than assisting your habit in purchasing new things for your smart home...

Followup from my yesterdays doorbird camera. This is full sunlight. Does this seem like 720P hd of a 4-500usd camera?
looks about right for 720
but not $500 worth ....but your camera may have options that a cheaper one dont ....fog detection and etc
hmm, but thats not HD quality?
any suggestions for POE cameras with onvif /live streaming with a better resoltion?
doorbell ones
720 is within the spec of HD
no doubt ^^^^
This is how my other camera looks. A bit better hehe
i would imagine a doorbell camera has to use a wide angle camera prolly low shutter times ....so pic may not look as nice since its being streched
Does your camera have wide dynamic range (WDR) or highlight compensation (HLC) settings you can turn on?
here is the specs: https://www.doorbird.com/downloads/datasheet_d101s_en.pdf
I just switched from a ring to this, but you guys do agree the quality is not up to 2019 standard?
The first image you posted seems a little out of focus and both of them have overblown highlights which is why I asked about WDR or HLC settings. Other than that it's about right for 720p (other than the price you paid).
yeah it got no settings to adjust, thats it
sent and email to doorbird, hopefully it could be an issue with the doorbell
been concidering the dahua db11 camera instead as it shold be local onvif, but not sure
the ring pro go no local onvif?
Bought three tradfri bulbs today
White spectrum ones
Ikea seems to have stopped selling B22 to E27 adapters though for some reason hmm
@hushed basalt 1usd on ebay hehe
Yeah I bought a bunch on amazon prime
Still it's better to pick it up in store at the same time than wait four days
Firstworldproblems
true, at least you have amazon there. For me it takes 1-2 months unless I day 50 bucks for dhl
Amazon lite. Aus Amazon is pretty lame. But yeah
cant stand stand their customer support, like when I complained about the nest termostats
after the 3 months window they give no support
Yeah I think it's an American thing. 90 days
Australians laugh at that
Consumers have no leverage in America
alright does anyone own the UchiPika yet https://soranews24.com/2019/06/01/uchipika-new-pikachu-robot-talks-sings-controls-lights-and-tvs-even-when-pokemon-isnt-on/
@hushed basalt here in norway its 5 years
it is? I tought it was 2 π
2 for products not exptected to last more than 3 years, but 5 on things like phones etc
so if the product should last more than 3 years you have full rights for 5 years
5 on phones? :O
longest I have had one is about 2 years :P
after 1,5 I expect it to start breaking π
hehe, be more careful :p
πΊ is a big factor here
has nothing to do with it, they get slow, battery degrades, OS are throtled (by design)
My phones easily last 3 years... well, barring design flaws they're still working 5 years later
I've got some old Nokia phones that still work
My Nokia 7110 still works, though finding a GSM network to use it on...
we have that in Norway, move here, no problem π
norway is shutting down the 3g network now so bad luck for old phones
GSM will still operate untill 2030 I think
that could be, but is the gsm signal usable?
Time to move house clearly. What's Oslo like π
cold?
I live in Scotland, cold is fine π
even clouded I produced 100kwh solar today
gsm are still used in elevator alarms and in nursing homes, it was planed to shut it down a couple of years ago but it was pushed.
Generally I find oslo too hot π
Well, looks like you've got a rail network, so if it's up to modern standards, I could live with a half hour commute π
it could be better, the main issue with that is all the stops, too many folks getting on/off
Not unlike the trains here then
Besides, I tend to find commuting by train is less pain than driving into large towns or cities π
I live about 40min walk from where I work, but Im too lazy to walk, and usually with bus/train, I have 1h comute time π
no shit...
I usually work form home
Nice
Yeah, I could drive to work, but it'd cost more and at best I'd break even on time vs the train, but mostly I'd take longer too
i would imagine it would be a one time event
probably :/
During rush "hour" it's normally standing room only here
I don't really care - I can stand for half an hour, it's not going to kill me π
On the other hand, I get four trains an hour...
when our trains are "full" they are not full, norwegians don't like eachother, so sitting next to a stranger on the train is scary, there is a lot of empty seats, even if half the travelers are standing π
I cant I got PTSD from army being in an overcrowed train is hell
Come to London, try the Tube...
Sardines
During rush hour, you get to see how many strangers you can be squashed against at once...
This is one of the many reasons why I loath London
humans don't generally come with an API
They do
It's just that it's a variable quantity of verbal vs non-verbal communication, and each API implementation is different
Some API implementations are also incompatible and may lead to fights π€·
just create an automation that change the NTP servers of the world so everyone is late. woila empty trains since their iphones are wrong
To be fair, you could just get a job at Apple's QC department. I mean, they've done that themselves a few times π
HTTP ERROR: 409, 418, 425
I love the military customers where they have two NTP servers in each DC, but they have to bring them out twice a year to sync them with GPS π€£
It's so easy to run a suitable antenna even into that kind of environment
well, not when it's 4km inside a mountain with three checkpoints on the way π€£
KISS π
GjΓΈvik?
You are not cleared to know anything, I can neither confirm nor deny anything, but gjΓΈvik is not that far into the mountain π€£
I've spent many nights up there, great site, but I prefer RennesΓΈy π
Low o2 4 lyfe
I prefer remote π
I beat you in distance I guess, fixing stuff on the south pole, via a proxy in tromsΓΈ, so add a few extra kilometers π€£
that would be roughly 20.000km remote π€£
I help some counties in Finnmark, that's the longest my signal have to travel π
soon to be Troms municipality π€£
really?
hopefully that will garner some work for me too, the problem with northern norway areas is everything is a pissing contest
talked to two cities in finnmark who were refreshing their infrastructure
it's not limited to northern norway π
problem is... they only knew their solution was going to be bigger than the other ones
that was the only thing that was decided..
LOL π
- January 2020 actually
they will be one municipality
hmm.. that's 1/3 of the country
I said we should just have given Finnmark to russia, they only sit at home eating fish and collecting money from the state anyway π
"Det nye storfylket skal hete Troms og Finnmark." wonder how long it took them to come up with that π
2+ years actually π€£
π
I love these government organizations that get funding to "rebrand" themselves
Sporveien in Oslo changed their name to Kollektivtransportproduksjon years ago, and a few years ago they got funding to rebrand themselves
I think they spent... 3.5 million to get a company to find out "Sporveien" was the right name...
VY could not have been cheap
Probably 5 million to change one of our biggest brand names the last 100 years
slow clap
atleast we keep folks working π
and its us with cars who pays for it :p 98% of oslo toll booths to public transpo :p
"us"? You drive electric and does not pay tolls π
from today we do :p
and I do have a diesel
too
remember 50 new booth today
or yesterday
Wow.. that suck
Does adding "climate:
- platform: zwave" do anything special?
I see it mentioned in the guide but not why it should be added
#zwave-archived would be the place to ask π
So. I was all cocky when setting up grafana, thinking I could simply make do with postgres and get rid of 3 containers of influxdb...then I tried to do a simply query on temperature.
...
Long live influx db for sheer laziness!
Home assistant for more than just the house. Turtoise breeding too
Suggestion for you guys with Unify-equipment; multiple reports of bricked update from 2.1 to 2.3. Not to bash or being negative, just hold off your update a bit.
Just run proper networking equipment, problem solved π
Also, work pays all my toll booth passes, no worries no care π
I want to say, blame the shipping company they use for having a bad/no API or the software the seller uses not support the API
Iiiii wanna know, have you ever seen the raiiin coming down on a sunny day π΅
Toll roads are a disease on society
Remember when they said "We're only charging the toll to pay the road off."
oldmenlaughing.jpg
fuck trying to flash with the RPI. Fuck Soldering.
I'm just gonna drive an hour and buy an FTDI from Microcenter
and some MTF headers
How can I periodically trigger my power on for my surround sound so it stay on while I'm detected home?
automation with a trigger time_pattern and condition of your device_tracker state being home
Thanks! I will try this.
Does anyone know of reasonably priced zigbee/z-wave wall switches?
Wifi switches are cheap but I can't seem to find any utilizing those other protocols that doesn't cost an arm and a leg comparatively
For reference, I have a bunch of wifi switches that I got for $10-12
I use the Xiaomi switches
NOK 44.32 15%OFF | xiaomi aqara wireless switch smart remote control zigbee Intelligent wifi button mi for mijia app gateway2 redmi note 5 iphone 7
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/bhFR7Fr2
NOK 103.70 21%OFF | Original Xiaomi Aqara Smart Switch Light Remote Control ZiGBee wifi Wireless Key Wall Switch work with mijia Mi Home APP
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/bFrtSksY
Sorry, meant a US wall switch to replace standard/dumb wall switches wired into the house
Good morning guys, is any of you here using a Ticwatch therefore also Google assistant?
I was thinking of replacing my wrist band and I saw these smart watches. It would be a nice add if i could control lights and such using the mic on the watch. Feedback?
Edit: it seems so. there's an app, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dyna.logix.bookmarkbubbles which seems great.
I also watched a few videos.
A feedback from someone who use it would still be interesting to hear tho.
It's knows that reviews and videos most of the time are made up to look good
I want to put a camera on my fish tank.... any suggestions for something that's cheap but works well with HA?
@simple talon try #cameras-archived
thanks
I understand wanting to avoid the cloud and keep things local, but...

Get up and turn the AC on. Get up and check on your child.
Just tape your baby to the wall.
If you hear a thump. Go check on it.
No cloud needed
so i noticed that my nest thermostat has been unavailable for the last day and half. anyone else experinceing this?
Yeah just a few people
Googles Cloud service kind of went door for a good few hours yesterday
kind of fucked up Discord and Youtube and Gmail
and Nest of course
just read sun.sun will become more quiet in the next release... I need to replace it in every template sensor as entity_id.. whatr would be a good alternative? sensor.time?
@valid halo ah i see. anyway to get it back? still says unavailable..
Dunno Alex. I don't have any nest stuff. I just know Gizoogle had problems yesterday. Sorry
I had an internet outage for 30 days (what drove me to investigate HA).... I had to use the actual light switches like an animal
ah ok.
For google I see it more like they go down to the server farm and start whipping. "GET BACK UP OR YOU'LL END UP IN SOME NERDS HOME ASSISTANT INSTALL!"
lol. i got it fixed, i just deleted the intergration, restarted HA and re-added the intergration.
I'm just happy they changed their mind about completely shutting down apis.
This is why people should be multi vendor cloud :D
But seriously, people think the sky is falling when AWS or Google loses a region
But availability is still a thousand times better than when everyone was hosting stuff on prem or self managed servers
Just now we have more eggs in one basket. But the basket is a lot safer and cheaper and faster
But yes, anyone hosting a super critical service should be multi vendor multi region
But I'm sure people will survive without uber eats for half an hour
gotta have backups upon backups upon backups...
I'm once again reminded of my awesome computer teacher who kept weekly backups of his data in his car so if his house burned down he would not lose everything except for the nightly back up
^^
same my cs teacher grilled that into our heads
and it saved my butt when someone stole my laptop
I had all the data... and really that's all that matter
the school's insurance bought me a new laptop but nothing could have replaced that data if I didn't have it
(turns out it was a fellow classmate stealing tons of stuff from the IT lab and selling them on ebay)
I keep putting off getting a back up HDD to shove in a shoebox
Because I think A good wipe and reinstall would be good for me
about every year or two... I'll just wipe a machine.... but I always restore my $HOME dir... I need to clean up my digital life.... I've got shit from 2000 just hanging around taking up space
The only reason I'd do a full system back up is that i'm messy as heck
I put random fiels everywhere
So I dont know where the important stuff is
I try to keep a filesystem structure in my $HOME but it has evolved so it wouldn't make sense
Yea i'm the same way, on my laptop i had to replace the hard drive a couple years ago because the computer fell off the couch and damaged the arm.. anyway pretty much all my important stuff was saved to my google drive and that i need to clean up at some point
I'm getting even lazier about cleanup since I switched to Nextcloud
I got a synology NAS and slapped the nextcloud frontend in front of a nfs share coming from the NAS....
but it is good from redundant backups (besides the real backups)
all my machines have the same $HOME dir
oh god...
[sunshine ~]$ du -sh
645G .
I hear a lot of good stuff about Synology
yeah just don't let it be a single point of failure...
they do die... and when they do it can be spectacular
I thought I was f'd a few weeks ago
I have the synology do automatic firmware upgrades around 4am.... usually takes it about 10-20min to do the upgrade. I had never seen one in action only just awoken to a notice that it had upgraded
well I was jetlagged from a trip to Berlin so I was awake at 4am when it did an upgrade
π
when it does the upgrade it blinks like it has had a failure
and since it was running my DNS resolving, I couldn't search the internet for what was going on (I could I just had to override my DNS lookup servers)
but for a good 15min I was frantic trying to see just how f'd I was and if it was possible to recover
fortunately, I didn't touch the machine or power cycle it and it came back up by itself
π
Anyone experienced this? I took one lone without tftp, and one with tftp. Uloads correctly but full or errors and ends up in a console
That sounds like a design flaw
"What should we have it do when it upgrades? Blink like it died? Great idea ted."
yeah... I did a search for synology blue blinking light
this was the first thing that popped up for me https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/8wxjam/blinking_blue_light_of_death_how_screwed_am_i/

not very confidence boosting
but aside from that minor-freak-out moment when it was just doing what I told it to do and auto upgrade at 4am.... it's been solid
I find my self a bit confused at times
NAS is network attached storage and yet people talk about running HA and other things on their Synology gear
I wasn't worried about the data... I have it copied on two different external disks as well as auto-uploaded to backblaze
oh yeah Synology has a full suite of apps you can install and run from it
I don't use it that way (seems insecure to expose it directly to the internet)
but it has stuff for private vpn, webserver, music/document online access.... I wouldn't doubt it has the ability to run HA
it's just a linux system with a really fancy web-gui frontend
I've had my qnap run for 8 years now, been running 40+ vms 24\7 + my primary tv-series storage for most of that time
never had any issues except one failed drive which was replaced by the manufacturerer
moving everything over to freenas now though, due to hardware constraints of the qnap, I get 15-20MBps on the Qnap and 100-110MBps on the freenas, and I can still run iocages on it
I thought long and hard about doing freenas
but ultimately went with synology for the setit/forgetit ease

You have a internet connection that has a lower upload speed than download speed?
Yeah, you need to limit connections probably, because for each package you send you need to return it also, connections like that is so last tech π
Usually on those connections one would set 50 per torrent for example is my experience
not even torrenting - uploading the deam raw images from the baptismal service - why the hell a photo has to have 80 MB?
Because raw dont get compressed?

didn't they just come up with the most powerful one yet!
That's like saying the fastest Lada yet... π
(I don't actually hate Macs, but they make such a damn easy target)
My aqara cubes arrived woop
I've looked at those, but... I'm just not sure I'd actually use it
I'm thinking about having one in the nursery, to change the colour of the lights etc
And one to change scenes in the upstairs living Room perhaps
And one in the guest bedroom just to have an entertaining room control
I have five of them at home, and we love them!!!
Maybe I'll have to try one
I had to put label on each of them so that we are not confused which one goes to which room π
Next purchase will be another router for the mesh though. Adding a LED controller actually made the mesh worse π€¦
oh man!
It sits "between" the controller and the existing router - but at a position that makes for a sub-optimal signal
Looks like the router is trying to use it to connect to the controller, so it keeps dipping out π¦
Meh, it gives me an excuse to detour to Ikea at the weekend π
yeah...
lol - We used to go to IKEA when it was far from my home - we used to go for an all day trip, and buy all kinds of junk from there... now they opened up like 10 min from my home, and we never went there!
π€£
I almost drive past two IKEAs every time I go to the office
Drive past one, and the other is 10 min further from the office π
That's just... wrong typical π
All the IKEA bulbs act as routers right?
In that case I should be covered, and then some when moving to zigbee2mqtt π
It looks like, as with Z-Wave, any mains powered device should be a router
I may just pick up a couple of bulbs π
(and a couple of the router plugs)
I've also got a POE switch in a potentially useful location, so I'm going to grab a POE to USB adapter and try relocating
My monthly microcenter trip was a doozy. I nearly crashed. Thankfully my cars radar automation made me brake hard and my car doesn't have a scratch.
I should crash more often, I'm way overdue, nothing has happened in 16 years and 600.000 km
Try driving using only one eye. It helps
I drive while texting and while reading the news, nothing helps
I even drive a 20 year old car π€·
I want to die. Kill me now
I just realized I bought the wrong cables
I have FTF and now MTF
:( π«
Sounds like a bad porn abbreviation
So, a FTF and an extender for it π
Sorry. I bought FTF. I wanted to buy MTF
I already own FTF
I guess I can learn to solder finally
Attempting to flash the sonoff by just sticking wires in there and hoping that they had Papa contact in the holes it was a pretty big failure last night
I think I'm gonna take a break from son offs for a while
I think I just burnt out part of my FTDI
I saw it tiny glow orange
and now there is smoke
slams head against desk
is desk ok?
Desk is fine
I had a bunch of wires plugged into the fTDI with just bare heads
I think the GND and 3v3 touched and made a short or something
yep
Okay yeah. I'm gonna put my son off away
take a few days to feel bad
then order a new FTDI with FTM headers so I don't fuck myself again
Trying to do a son off flash with bare wires just poking through the wholes is impossilbe
Yea ...i would say to you if you where my son ..... Suck it up Buttercup
inhales with great enthusiasm
At least I didn't start a fire
I just probably breathed in some horribly unhealthy smoke
sadly its part of the learning process ...you will get better
I think I might go back to Microcenter and buy another of their FTDI
it was nice
you had a little switch for 5v/3.3v
Well first gotta return the extra FTF wires
Uuh a pre tasmota flashed plug... and they mention incompatibility with home assistant
19 euros and an no need for a ftdi π
I'll give it a try
Didn't have any 3 way wifi switches so I used an automation. Easy peasy, let's hope the network is always up lol
...jesus christ apple is fucking retarded.
i just can't anymore.
mac pro STARTING at 6k. i don't even want to know how much one with 1.5TB of RAM is going to run, but i'm betting shy of 20k. no cuda support. 5k 32" display...but unless you have your own personal slave to hold it in place while you work, there's a really nice stick for it to stand on for an additional 1k.
...are they just like fucking with the whole world at this point?
I think my wifi has been unstable... yeh? π
Are they MQTT? Running Tasmota?
yeh
tasmota version?
6.5.x?
if so status will give you the number of WiFi connections and MQTT connections
6.4.1(
yeh I'm afraid to do that again - last time I had to go stand out there with a laptop to undo the ota bork (it's my own fault, I had a custom tweaked version)
(Sonoff 4CH Module - the original version I had on there was very very old and hacked because I had nfi what I was doing)
there were some diabolical dodgy firmwares recently that caused boot loops but 6.5.x is solid
I have done OTA hundreds of times with no issues
oh yeh me too, on every other device, just that one is mounted in the meter box and a pita to work with (neigh impossible to remove to work on) if anything goes wrong lol
it's not risk free but incredibly unlikely to go wrong...
again
and you get some useful stats..
crosses fingers
6.5.0(release-sonoff) - yes this works better when you're not using hacked firmware to begin with π
I used hacked firmware because I think I had to patch the 4ch in when I first set it up
where do I go for that pretty screen of info?
(I mean I could just rtfm but you're much easier to read)
ah If you go to the integration and click on the status sensor
I have added status to a lovelace card back when I had that shit firmware boot loop and also when I had issues with core 2.4.2 and 2.5.0 and I used it to work out that core 2.3.0 was still most stable in my environment
ummm integration and status sensor? sounds like I'm configured differently my integration for mqtt is empty π¦
so you have them configured manually then? I think you should still see them in states
That's one of mine... you mak have a similar switch with a _status
it's the status one that shows the info
or it's also in the console for Tasmota as well
yeh manual configuration
goes poking
looks like I have add a sensor subscribed to stat/carport/STATUS# ?
I think it's status 2
if not for all the configuration I've done I could just turn on discovery π
hahahaha.... so much simpler actually
looks like I am publishing an empty string to sonoffs/cmnd/state - but your topic would be cmnd/sonoffs/state
you can see what that command does if you do it in the console
ooh I could add syslogging
That's the same as the status message I posted...
yeh I'm just showing I'm reading docs too π
trying to turn on autodiscovery but doesn't seem to find anything
probably for the better
oh, maybe because of this "sonoff-basic.bin and sonoff-classic.bin"
thanks, btw, David
so you don't use sonoff.bin?
I don't recall what I used tbh
I read a little more documentation about enabling it and what would happen when I did and I'm not ready to do that much reconfiguring π
https://img.pr0gramm.com/2019/06/03/c0281affb2913f54.jpg
Aaah d
Oh gosh.. waiting hard for the new R&M season
π€£
there is a new season of Final Space coming out soon too
I highly recommend it
Interesting.....
Bet ya regret that ironic neverjihaditsogood89 at hotmail.com addy now, huh?
Anyone know if you can specifically point out a Google Home as a cast device in the config like other chromecast devices?
Not sure what you're asking, but the GH devices should work exactly the same for casting as chromecast devices do
Can you call the Chromecast devices specifically in the config: https://www.home-assistant.io/components/cast/
This bypasses the discovery for the chromecasts I was wondering if you put a google home here as well if it would work or if discovery would still be needed
should be able to. For me cast: doesn't work at all so I can't test but with the media_player component I've used ip addresses instead of discovery
Thanks for the help! I'll give it a try later today!
@dark swallow I'm just curious, why are you wanting to bypass discovery?
@deft reef every once and a while on a reboot one of the chromecasts get missed, it's not a huge deal because it usually gets picked up within 15 minutes but I was just looking for something that would tell HA to find them specifically
honestly the few that get missed are probably because they further away from the router so poorer network connection which I could fix just by moving them closer
Ah gotcha
Well good luck with it
I recently ran into issues where it appears I have too many wifi switches and they're interfering with each other so I'm setting up another AP on a different channel to see if that alleviates the issues
Thanks! Again not a huge deal just trying to stop any potential fail points
Yeah I hear ya
I won't have a super complex setup, I just want it to run 99.9% of the time
Yeah I thought that might be the issue too, I already have another AP that talks to the router to set and change channels based on traffic so that's probably not the issue
The kids and wife aren't as forgiving when things break lol
Lol same here except for my its my parents and sister
Is there a way to see for signal strength on your Chromecast?
@dark swallow
Oops
Didn't mean to do that
Other than using a third party app on like a phone or something I don't think so
but that is an interesting question
Just thought maybe checking that would give an indication on whether that's the issue
yeah good thought I'll look into it!
Sadly the only 'good' spot in my house for my router and stuff to sit, even though it's in the middle of the house is directly next to a bunch of air ducts
wifi doesn't go well through sheet metal
Yeah, that's a bummer
I have a big brick wall in the middle of my house but it surprisingly doesn't seem to cause issues
I thought for sure it would
really! That's good!
Do you have your Chromecasts IP addresses reserved?
and for me its not like I can put the router on the other side of the wall because then the other half of the house would have issue
I'll be doing that when I try moving them off the discovery and onto its own config lines
Ok good. I know it's simple but that was a facepalm moment for me on some things that I setup that weren't being discovered
yeah lol I did the same with a previous install of HA where I didn't set the router to keep that ip static and i was wondering why i couldn't ssh into the pi
Lol me too
I'm like, this stupid thing is broken already
Now I assign every new device that is a permanent addition
Yeah i do that too for my smart home stuff and my personal phone and computer but doing that for every new device could be headache
I just do it for the things i know i don't want changing
other peoples phones and stuff I could care less about as long as they can connect
I really wish I could get a better router/wifi system like unifi though
AT&T's stuff is terrible!
Yeah, I don't assign phones or computers, just my smart home items that are installed
I really need to make a running list of assigned IP's
as someone who has never used scenes, is there even one advantage they have over scripts?
Hey guys !
Soo I was searching for a grocery/recipes app
But i couldn't find anything that fits my needs. π
But j also don't know enough about JS to do it alone
I can and started to make the server side in c# as that is what I'm good at. (Should be able to run it as a hassio add-on)
But I don't know where I could find someone who can help me make the front end?
Can someone help me / point me to a place where I can find such people?
Hello!
Please take the time to read the channel topics before posting @brittle bane π
Thank you @clever mortar
doctor, heal thyself?
I don't suppose anyone else here has any LIFX leds? My bedroom bulb keeps turning itself on around 3:33 every damn morning... I've firewalled it from the internet so it's not some remote thing, I've tracked it's dhcp requests it's not dropping off the network... I don't think it's having power interruptions (because it's not dropping off the network)... I'm about ready to throw the thing...
@steel tartan change the IP, does it still happen?
haven't tried that yet, will try it tonight (just have to firewall whatever ip I put it on cos I don't trust the net and it's not on the VOT (vlan of things) - yet
probably should connect to it with the lifx app and see if there's some strange setting turned on
π€·
If you change the IP any script against it won't work anymore
Atleast locally
and you are sure you don't have some automation turning it off? π
That's lower then I expected
more than 100% of all iot devices are unencrypted ludeeus : that is lower than I expected
Yes, but you would never be satisfied π
I was 1000% doing something and have gone blank on what it was.... god damn...
webhooks
Lol No got them working.
Anyone know if cameras like UVC-G3-AF will work with non unify servers? (like blue iris) my nvr system is BI, but I do like the cameras
@late gate Pretty sure you can use tham as standard ip cameras with other recording software. But you can't use non ubiquiti cameras with their recorder
@quartz ether good π Got a dlink here, and in their latest firmware they actually blocked non dlink recorders
I got shocked
That sounds very strange π€
god damnit google
so i got two new tuya plugs and google sees them as lights
so when i say "turn off all the lights" it turns off the plug
which is great and all except i have a server hooked up to it
Or at least don't expose them to Google π
i have about six lights throughout the house, some using tuya plugs
why google doesn't just have an "ignore this device" feature is beyond me
You don't have the option of not exposing a given device then? That's bad design
pretty much
you hook up a device account (tuya in this case) to add devices to google assistant but you can only add per account and not have it ignore devices
I put the server on a plug to measure wattage, by the way
another cool feature GA doesn't support
wondering how much power i waste on transcoding shitty anime in plex
seems to idle at 70W when no vm's are running, lets power them all up
lol wattage doubled right away
can tuya plugs be flashed without an rpi?
Have you tried the OTA method?
enlighten me
i thought that required an rpi
I've used it on some 30 tuya switches around my house. Flashes them with Tasmota. However, back in like Feb Tuya got smart to it and disabled it on devices that have the newest firmware so it may or may not work for what you have
It either works or doesn't. It won't brick it if the Device isn't compatible
mine are losonho smartlife branded, never upgraded any of em
Don't have to have an rpi, although you need some way to run the scripts (Linux machine)
i wonder if this would work in a VM with a usb wifi thingy
I use my rpi to run it but it's not required, just don't think it's been tested on many devices other than rpi but it should work on most linux setups
It's worth trying
Only takes a few minutes (once you install all the stuff) to test it
yeah i'm spinning up a fresh ubuntu vm right now
I'd give it a whirl and see what happens
if the vm doesn't work i'm just gonna install ubuntu on my laptop and see if that works better
I tried running it on the windows subsystem first before I got my rpi but couldn't get it working
Anybody here having a synology nas that likes to ignore all connections after a few days? And sometimes allow them again the next day? π
i manage one at work
we don't really have connection issues with it but it's not exactly all that advanced either
I've got 2 friends with one too, but my is the only one with that "Naa, not this evening buddy" Feature
we did spend like over a year with slow data transfers because SOMEONE filled in a fucken speed limit in some obscure settings window
Ahh the oatmeal poster π
hi guys, i might need a little help with monitor.sh for the bluetooth scanning. Right place here?
anybody using an Ambient Weather system?
So anyone got a touchscreen in the wall that lives in europe? since i see tons of american solutions where they pretty much put a giant hole in the wall called a 2/3 socket thing. We only have 1 socket and it wont even fit a PI in it. I have a whole in the wall, i can bring utp/power/etc to it but no pi will fit. Ideas?
make a bigger hole and just pull 5v to it? you dont really need a box for a pi / screen, but you could 3d print one
Now that this Discord server is boosted, could we get an animated server icon?
That slick logo animation posted from @devout pollen would be cool! https://lottiefiles.com/share/yrBqJR
Kinda random here, but does anyone know of a way to automate recording a webpage at a certain time?
you can have a timer based automation that scrapes a given url
oh you want to be fancey @last plaza
Pretty good series
yup!
lol
@violet brook I just used an Amazon Fire tablet (I'm in the US though)
if you can get USB power to it, that's good enough
@ocean mirage spoiler alert!
that's twice!
oh shit
π
have you heard someone's built a ship and is going to run the Titanic's route?
@last dirge where the hell u been
around
well at least I didn't ruin The Passion of The Christ buy telling you Jesus dies
Someones actually built a titanic replica?
I remember clive palmer wanted to... I think
@ocean mirage I don't know if it's a replica but it's a ship that's going to run the route
found a boyfriend i understand π€£ @last dirge
Surely other ships have run the route since then?
I gotta admit I don't actually know what the route is
@dull chasm my wife finally got tired of the garage door accidentally getting left open all night
so she made me do something about it
Can't be left open if there is no door
so now I've got a garage cover
wtf is TRX all in thou
oh ok
made me about 12 grand the end of 2017
net 12 k ?
yeah +12
cool more power to ya
damn, nice
we won't talk about what happened last year though π
is @tidal bronze still around?
ya lost 20 k
I remember every time bitcoin goes up I just think "I shoulda bought"
@last dirge yes sir
but I never trust its gonna go up again
it'll go up again
Hey @last dirge
what's crackin?
When I first heard of bitcoin it was $20
Can you imagine if I invested then
jesus christ
@last dirge he hides ..... supposed to find me a good deal on KLispch speaker but nothing yet
I'm scared to update
Same ol. I got my BTC @ 12
Can I ask what you sold it at / if you sold it
yeah should e
Sold 5 when it was 18k
oh damn nice
I just remember when it cracked 200 for the first time being like "Guess I missed out"
even spending a few grand on it then would have been great
I am debating to let go or not ATM
big win, could be bigger I guess
@tidal bronze have you listened to the Kliscph 8000f?
Dump everything in cannabis π
@tidal bronze I'll pay you 10x what you paid for 'em π
lol
everybody wins
suspicious amazon device is suspicious
it's the fire tablet
WTF is it doing?
not in a while
Oh
I got a rate bump at work
Nice.
depends on your timeframe and volatility
Yep
sounds stressful to me tbh
holy crap that was a PITA
@last dirge posted a message that is too long, it is moved here --> https://paste.ubuntu.com/
oooh, HassBot's got new tricks
so what have I missed in the last 30 some odd revisions?
anything really cool?
π
Been keeping up with the updates but honestly there's nothing much to do anymore on my system. Things been working smoothly last year.
the only thing I'd want to update for is to get rid of the need for haaska and just use google home for stuff
you said that's doable now, right?
Yes, gave up Alexa long time ago. Actually use Google home on the phone and hub more than HA ui now.
did anyone move their boost to a new server? and did it reset your total time? (ping me if you respond im asking in a few servers)
@last dirge does that have a motion detected so the screen goes on?
it seems to me google gets all the love with HA lately. Is it time to switch system to GH?
from alexa
Google 4 lyfe π
but is it any real reason to change other than brand?
alexa has been working well, but in my head it seems like GH is more open somehow with smarthome
Alexa is probably nice for Americans, they will have a lot more features than us lowly Scandinavians
I can't say I know much about either systems, but if you are having no gripes with Alexa why change?
@clear ferry Im not sure what GH can do here in EU that Alexa cant do?
@ocean mirage No to be honest im happy with Alexa and dont think I want to change as it works well in Norway, does what it should. The only thing I notice is GH is getting much love in HA with select entities, video on demand etc, while alexa kinda hangs behind. If thats an Alexa limitation thats a problem, if its a resource problem of HA development thats not a huge issue as that I can understand
@devs - maybe it could be clever to add GPS coordinates to the frontend. When tried it HA placed me far out in the ocean west of south africa
a tad far from norway
I can't say I know enough to give further insight, I don't have either
My map puts me in Sydney, which is a few hundred KM away
Oh, its a new feature is it?
the map thing on the config page is a new feature yes released yesterday
@ocean mirage you'll have to set your location and such. It won't be able to (probably ever) get your location quite right without input
Although I haven't used the new config page so I can't say whether you can set it there
Hi all! I would like to get some pointers on using a raspberry pi to send over DSMR values to Home Assistant on a different machine, which channel should I ask my questions in as there are so many and I don't know which one to use.?
So, now that my bed occupancy sensor is working, I'm trying to figure out the best way to automate stuff with it. I'd like to make Google Home ask me if I want to go to sleep and set an alarm, but is this something GH can do?
So what you are saying is that ${recipient.login} is not your name?
oh shit now I know what to make my name on their forums
I sense something is about to go down
my confidence that they would have sanitized their inputs now is extremely low
My error screen saver gets more evil day by day
I mean, when it displays an error message from a long dead company...sure
but now it's branched into spam fun
Nice - does it also count down?
Has anyone implemented a front page for opening electronic locks for home? I am about to install electronic entry and want some sort of front page so guests or contractors/workers can enter if I pre authorize some code or something
@hearty depot Nah, it changes every few seconds. Core dumps, Windows Blue Screens, it covers everything from early 70's messages to today. I have all the xscreensavers installed, but this particular one is memorable
What tab would you guys suggest for HA dashboard? something with a bit power. used a cheap levono before and it was lagging a bit on the UI side.
iPad pro 13"
If I had the money to spend hehe. No android tabs that can give the same experience?
Sure they can
And for HA Dashboard, not junk is probably enough
I mean, look at the specs for cheap lenovo and go for something a couple of generations on
yeah the old lenovo worked, but it started lagging
Try recreating your view in #frontend-archived
yeah actually I was using lovelace, but it was not strong enough
but that tab was oooold
I was thinking of having a tab with a sim card so I could run tasker in the background to intercept push notifications from non integrateble apps
haha
WAF π
I had visitors for two weeks and they loved the smarthome. Home Assistant worked perfectly even with visitors using voice commands
My biggest use for a UI could be replaced by being able to stream Floorplan to my Google Home Hub
Don't need a thing I can click, just a view
yeah, usually its good, but im having a 1000l aquarium and solar panels so I need a bit more clicking, graphs etc
My only use for UI is debugging/developing custom stuff xD
Its the feelgood feeling of seeing my house producing 12000w when im using 2000 :p
use more
im selling the extra to the grid
heck my tiny apartment uses more then that π
HA does a good job of controlling the house
now we just need more AI into HA to make it start suggesting automations. that wouls be cool. Something like "we see a trend you are not using the downstairs bathroom from 9 am to 3pm, should I turn it down a couple of degrees when you are not at home"
would be very user friendly
But of course one day when you come home the doors are locked and the AI have sent documents to the gov overtaking the house
Aleks, you have a lot of solar panels? And where do you live?
just a few blocks down the road
@deft reef Im having around 50 solar panels - live in Norway
HA will have a much larger role with the solar when I finish building my battery bank - price on power change extremely much. Could save around 2000USD a year on just letting HA move power around
I did buy them and installed by a company. We are talking about a peak of 15 kilowatt so a LOT of power. Not legal to do stuff like that yourself, and I had to get installed new wires from the street for them to handle the backload
the type one touch and dead
How long do you expect it to take to recoup your investment?
with the current production I would say around 12 years (30 years warranty on panels) - with battery bank and making good automations it will be fully paid in 8 years
usually it should live between 25 and 50 years with with no less than 20% reduction if how effective the panels are
Nice, sounds like a good setup. I've been interested in panels for years but I don't know that I'll stay in my current home long enough to make it worth it
This is how it looks like: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IgNubrLidcIXjyT8LM_gqOMcrhn4ak2n/view?usp=sharing
@late gate I bought a Chuwi Hi9, great for my fridge
If you could choose between those 3 @clear ferry which one would you choose. https://www.komplett.no/compare?id=975643&id=1128411&id=1078565 I can get one of those for free from them
Mediapad for sure, but the Chuwi beats them all in performance for 1/3 of the price
how is the Chuwi Hi9 on lovelace. Fully responsive on things like links, keyboard popups etc?
my old tab was so laggy it took 1s to click a link
What do you guys use for security camera monitoring?
looking for something linux based
for ip camera
@lucid dock just windows based here. I been through all systems and just dedided to run windows on the IP cameras
@clear ferry Does it have LTE/4G (important as I use tasker)
@lucid dock 20$ Chinese Poe cameras and zoneminder
my home server is linux so not really an option
VM?
@late gate nope, wifi
true
Single instance servers, so 1998 π
plus all my storage is ext4
hehehe
Esx 4 lyfe
I just bought a I7 computer off ebay (HP) that I use for surveilance. IP cameras need a lot of resources I dont want to waste
need another computer to use your computer
i mean i have 24 threads and 24gb of ram
but still
there has to be a linux based system
it is a lot, just ugly ones though
you could try the docker version of blue iris - never tried it, but it does exist
MotionEye
ooo @light trout that might the one
@lucid dock sure you can π€·
Oh like that... Just have a thin client, connect to a VM, problem solved π
haha yeah...
only advantage i see is being able to take full images of linux partitions live without ZFS
@light trout do you know if that supports pan and tilt camera controls?
was thinking of getting a couple of these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BF9S261
π€·ββοΈ
Zoneminder supports motorized Dome cameras
NOK 155.35 25%OFF | ONVIF IP Camera Outdoor Vandal-proof Camera 1080P 20fps 960P/720P 25fps Nightvision Surveillance IP Camera POE Module Optional
https://s.click.aliexpress.com/e/cGTA3Z8G like this one
dont think that one is a zoomie boye though
Zoneminder lets me zoom all my cameras and the resolution is good enough I don't need optical zoom π€·
Just zooms digitally
i wonder what the best way to even run a windows VM in Ubuntu is
Probably KVM, but who knows, Ubuntu as a virtualization platform, meh π
haha i know
it looks like they did add pan/tilt/zoom controls to motioneye
is blue iris decent?
@clear ferry i think ill start with that cheaper camera and go from there
any recommendations for a PoE injector?
I run Aruba 2530, so I have native Poe π but probably anything supporting 802.3af or at should probably be good enough
be careful with the cheap ones. A lot does not sense if the equipment is requesting POE and poff. Sometimes better to buy a unify POE switch and something like Dahua POE cameras - then you get good cameras and a very good switch
