#

For anything you do on a pi, the 2.0 speeds are more than enough

soft zephyr
#

so i looking for something what have SSD and good specs for today and the future

light trout
#

If you don't invest in the other parts (ram/cpu/motherboard) that is a waste of mony

soft zephyr
#

thanks seems sweet

orchid rose
#

there's no way to connect a ssd to a pi?

soft zephyr
#

i like server which picked @unreal orbit but its must be used for a good price

unreal orbit
#

So?

#

I bought mine used and it's been running 24/7 for almost 2 years

light trout
#

You can conect a SSD to a pi using the USB bus @orchid rose But I don't see any point of doing that

orchid rose
#

you don't think it would expand the life?

#

or are those buses expensive?

light trout
#

maybe, but for the price of the smalest one you can find, you get 10 quality SD cards

orchid rose
#

ah, okay fair enough

unreal orbit
#

Are you suggesting planning on SD cards failing?

clear ferry
#

Meh, ssds are overrated, I run 45 vms on spinning drives 😛

soft zephyr
clear ferry
#

But SSD in all of my workstations and laptops yes please

orchid rose
#

all of those higher priced pi's etc start getting way too expensive for me when you need to add the power adapter, storage, case etc as well while you can get a used NUC for a bit over 100€

#

in theory I could run hass on an old pc I have but the 100W idle power consumption is a bit much

clear ferry
#

100w idle doesn't even give a dent in my total house consumption 🤷

orchid rose
#

not all of us run super computers 24/7 in our houses 😉

clear ferry
#

Just yesterday I used 85kwh 🤷

soft zephyr
#

if I plan to install it to someone, it should be new. Buy a NUC in your own home is a good idea, but for someone else to install, you need a standard low-cost solution.

#

how you calculate daily consumption, can you share?

orchid rose
#

Where I live you can check that on the the service providers site

unreal orbit
#

Or you can go look at your meter

soft zephyr
clear ferry
#

I get it per hour in an app from my power company

orchid rose
#

I had 6.54kWh yesterday. Having 100W PC running at the same time would increase it fairly heavily 😃

soft zephyr
#

ok, i have a sonoff pow to see real time consumption

clear ferry
#

Seems may has been between 75 and 115kwh per day 🤔

unreal orbit
#

That board is almost $200... you could buy a new PC for that much

#

200 for the cheap one

clear ferry
#

February was 110 to 140 kWh per day

unreal orbit
#

And it has no case, no power supply, and no storage

soft zephyr
#

32GB EMMC STORAGE

clear ferry
#

You could buy two Chromebook for that price and run ha with redundancy

#

And still have the same specs

soft zephyr
#

yes its not cheap

clear ferry
#

Overpriced and pretty useless🤷

unreal orbit
#

Wait can you run HA on a chromebook?

#

Root required I'm assuming?

clear ferry
#

@unreal orbit anything would be possible I guess in the Linux beta shell, it is just running Debian in a VM

#

I can try for you 😂

#

But I don't see why not

#

Depending on how it exposes the network though 🤷

orchid rose
#

that would be a cheap option if it works and is easy to set up

clear ferry
#

I'll try to get ha running on Itanium while I'm at it 😛

unreal orbit
#

Not saying I would do it in prod, but that might make a good dev station

clear ferry
#

@unreal orbit Google says yes, I'll try on my Chromebook after putting the baby to sleep😉

i have a question I am somewhat new to Homeio. I have it up and running but i dont know how to get this script into home io from GitHub

clever mortar
#

Homeio?

light trout
#

Welcome back @clever mortar 👋 😄

clever mortar
#

Thanks, I think 😛

#

Sadly it looks like nobody burned all this down in my absence... 🤷

#

Next time I'll leave thermite and matches 🤷 😉

light trout
#

That could get exciting 😄

lone vale
#

lol yes. hassio

clever mortar
#

All components are built in to Home Assistant, no matter how you install it

#

You don't "get" any component in

#

(ok, there are a couple of exceptions, but those are image processing components)

lone vale
#

so the link on github are image processes?

clever mortar
#

No

lone vale
#

I guess long story short how do i connect my light switches and control them? I use to have it on IFTTT

clever mortar
#

GitHub is where the project is developed

#

And, from the fact that you found it in the dev branch, the answer is wait for it in a release

#

Once it's in a release, just follow the instructions in the component's documentation

#

Actually, looks like 0.85 had it 🤔

lone vale
#

i think it has been released

clever mortar
#

Just RTFM

clever mortar

Yeah, I've read lots of oddly translated manuals

clever mortar

#

I got pulled to one side and read the riot act over "not being professional" 🤷

light trout
clever mortar
#

Oddly enough, the feedback from the target audience on that version was rather good 😄

clear ferry

That sounds like everything I ever write @clever mortar 😂

As you've been told already before now 😉

clear ferry
#

I actually enjoy the belter language they have in The Expanse, it's simple and effective

clever mortar
#

Simple is good, but as a species we don't seem to actually like simple language

#

At least, that's the only way I can explain English...

#

Their, they're, there... all sound exactly the same, and mean totally different things

cloud cradle
#

I don't suppose anybody is having problems with iCloud Component, are they?

clever mortar
#

This channel being For chat around things that aren't Home Assistant related...

clear ferry
#

I'm learning Japanese atm, and its... actually quite simple gramatically, easier than most languages imo

#

Not like Thai where if say a word that goes UP at the end it mean pig, but if you go DOWN at the end it means... something different 🤷

clever mortar
#

Ah, tonal languages I think they're called?

clear ferry
#

yes, I only know of Thai and Mandarin that are like that

clever mortar
#

I remember a day reading up on such things, because there was a book about it to hand (and nothing else to do)

clear ferry
#

Then you have Finnish, where if the preceding verb was bent to the past, THE NOUN IS NOW FEMALE

#

or some other strange shit 😄

#

eeeh, I've upgraded 32 ESXi hosts from 6.0 to 6.7, upgraded firmware of all nodes, upgraded vcenter and kept history, and not a single of the 1400VMs were impacted, score 🎉

clever mortar
#

Nice

clear ferry
#

The vcenter bit is the bit that usually fails hard because of some component or some database entry that is gone to shite

clever mortar
#

Bare metal has issues, but that's not one of them 😉

light trout
#

And you are doing that on a Friday? You must hate life

clear ferry

yeah, the vCSA is very good, the windows vC is a fucking mess

#

@light trout I'm upgrading some of norways biggest betting systems on sunday, what can go wrong ? 🤷

clever mortar

I'll take a bet on that 😉

clear ferry

I've only taken down an airline booking system once in 12 years 🤣

light trout
#

Give the odds for it and I'll make a bet 😜

clear ferry
#

@clever mortar does my odds increase or decrease if I say it's running on Itanium hardware with OpenVMS software ?

clever mortar
#

Still sounds like plug 'n' pray 😉

clear ferry
#

I took down a development company once, but it was 11oclock so they just asked if it was back up until after lunch

#

I nodded

#

And it was 🤣

clever mortar
#

I've taken down a few things in my time, and once or twice it was even deliberately 😄

clear ferry
#

I would never gasp

clever mortar
#

My favourite was doing the cluster failover test, where I got approval to just cut the power to the primary node

#

As I argued at the time, that would happen for real at some point, so we may as well check it works

clear ferry

haha

clever mortar
#

It worked, and that exact situation hit a year later when some idiot cut the power

#

clear ferry
clever mortar

light trout

"There are single prosessing units in your area waiting to get.."?

clear ferry

totally random, and looks like it's written by a five year old

light trout
#

Suuuuuuuuuuure 🤣

clear ferry

If only there were single processing units in my area, or megabytes of ram that were willing to...

#

that would be something

I could go for a couble of megabytes now 😛

unreal orbit
ebon needle
#

Possibly off topic. Is there a tool that I can use to send a message that will redirect that message to the recipient's preferred method of communication. For example, if I send an e-mail, I want recipient A to get the message via Slack, recipient B to receive a text, recipient C some other form...etc.?

light trout
#

How would it know?

clever mortar
#

The only way to have that happen would be to build a broker, and have people register their preferred method with that broker

unreal orbit
#

Do you mean doing that in HA? I can picture a way with input_text and template automations

#

But it's not pretty

light trout
#

"have people register their preferred method with that broker" is the step in that plan that will fail

#

but the indian outsourcing companies are blooming pretty hard in Norway

light trout
#

They are? 😱

ebon needle
#

@light trout , yes, you're right. People generally don't care, so they don't make the choice. The "client's" expectation is that you'll develop a relationship with them such that you'll know and care more about them than they care about you. It's a customer service issue at a personal level. If I really want to make an impression, I take the time and put in the effort to make sure I know how you prefer to receive messages. Then, I utilize a tool (a broker, such as you've mentioned) to transmit the messages on my preferred sending platform to their preferred receiving platform. I as the sender would take responsibility for making sure the system is sending to the right platform for each person, because, as you stated, they won't care enough to make the choice. They would prefer that I just simply know what they want to receive. (Same problem Facebook has in developing the algorithm that's responsible for displaying content on our walls.)

clear ferry
#

@light trout TATA just got a big deal, and Cognizant and HCL have been big for years

#

Wipro are pretty big too

#

There are atleast a dozen more of them, but the names elude me 🤔

light trout
#

I see so you will actually do the job to utilize a tool like that, I have not heard of anything for the sender to use, but there are muliple platforms for the reciever to use, where they get all their chats in one client.

If it where me I would probably create some thing (in python 😄 ) that would act as a broker, store name + targets in a json file.

There are allready python libs for almost any communication channel out there already (includung SMS and email for the old legacy users).

ebon needle
#

@light trout It would be like when website asks you how you preferred to be contacted. I'm looking at Zapier and Ifttt but I think you're right in that I may have to learn how to script it myself. sigh and I'm too busy working on my HASwitchplate to do that today ;).

@clear ferry the guy who writes our cash up system owns his own software development company and he was saying he has like 5 staff in NZ to maintain servers and deal with customers but when ever he has a new job he out sources the whole thing and pays less that 25% of what it would cost him here, says he has one 16 year old who works really fast and costs less than the rest.

clear ferry
#

Yeah exactly @quartz ether but the price shouldn't always be the factor, we have entire government sectors that are outsourced 🤷 some of them are moving back though after discovering that letting someone halfway around the world have access to control fuel pumps to tankers was a poor idea 🤷

quartz ether
#

Lol... Thats where common sense should come into play...

clear ferry
#

Does it ever win over price?

#

I've seen entire it departments of 30+ people vanish and be replaced by 4 guys who don't know what they are doing, who still have to call me to do the upgrades, but lingers over my shoulder for the entire job 🤷

hushed basalt
#

Conservative governments never care about common sense

#

Their actions are usually a mix of cronyism, corruption, short sightedness and general repulsion for common people

#

I've never seen an example of privatisation that actually works

#

But they know it doesn't work anyways. But their mates get rich buying companies for pennies on the dollar the exploiting their assets as much as possible

Add in some government regulated monopoly on top of that to keep that company running no matter what, and you've got a perfect deal (for them)

Logic says I should buy a Tesla, but I don't smell my own farts and I ain't a ....

#

Also the car is horrible to drive and has shitty comfort

clever mortar
#

I've only been a passenger in them, and that's been a great experience

clear ferry
#

I found it shitty, been a passenger twice and had it as a loaner twice 🤷

#

But I had the A8 at the time, albeit it was 17 years older than the Tesla 😛

clever mortar
#

Yeah, but Audi know how to build cars

#

And maybe not so much how to build engines that pass emission legislation 😛

#

I'd love an Audi with a Tesla drivetrain - best of both worlds

#

(I drive an A4)

clear ferry
#

Audi e-tron then

clever mortar
#

The e-tron of a few years, when they move all that magic to a car that's practical

clear ferry
#

😂

#

Agreed, I've tried the q3, q5 and q7, only one that doesn't feel like my legs are trying to mate is the 7

clever mortar
#

I've not driven those, I've little need for a fake offroader 😛

#

The A4 is an ok load hauler, the boot's a bit smaller than I'd like, but the comfort makes up for it

clear ferry
#

E-tron is kinda in the middle of the 3 and 5 I think

clever mortar
#

Boot looks kinda small

#

Then again, I'm looking at it from the perspective of getting a dog in there...

Got the wife the Tiguan, thought about the touareg, but regretting it somewhat now, might get the touareg for myself 😂

Anyone that has found any good product to attach to a regular light switch, to make it able to send a command? Basically just looking for something that is preferably 230v powered, that has a mometary switch input that gives allows me to ultimately toggle something in HomeKit (through Home Assistant/HomeBridge/Homey or whatever works). Shelly 1's SHOULD work, as they have a detached mode where the switch input and relay work independently, but I found no way to make use of that mode. I could use a Shelly 1 with the relay empty and just soft-toggle my Hue lights depending on whether the (empty) relay is on/off but I would rather not have the relay in there flipping and ticking.

There must be a cheap I/O thingie to smarten a light switch by now. I cannot believe it has taken so long for someone to make it xD

clear ferry
#

I am going to use shellys for something similar atleast

#

my garage lights, but haven't gotten around to it yet

#

but I wont use momentary switches, just connect the existing switches to the shelly

clear ferry
#

@molten osprey It might look like a samsung atleast, but I would suspect it won't be, but who knows 🤣

molten osprey
#

I don't know. My experience with AliExpress has been 95% good. And I order off there a lot. Usually non-branded stuff though. We'll see I guess. Once I receive it, I'll try to put it through it's paces and see if there is a way to confirm it is genuine or not.

clear ferry
#

Yeah, the best test would be to see if it accepts samsung branded firmware I guess

orchid rose
#

the few issues I've had with chines stuff is with genuine stuff like that. 16Gb memory card actually being 4Gb etc

#

when I've ordered some chinese branded stuff it's always been 100% what I expected

clear ferry
#

yes, but I've never ordered named stuff from big brands, that is why I'm curious 🤣

molten osprey
#

I'm in Asia and "chinese stuff" doesnt have the same connotations here as it does in the west. To me, "made in the usa" means its overpriced because who in their right mind would manufacture in the US!

#

now, "Made in Germany" is a different matter

clear ferry
#

I've actually ordered stuff from Thailand once

molten osprey
#

but perhaps thats because I'm from Holland originally

clear ferry
#

resistors \ transistors and stuff like that, ordered like..... 5000 components 🤣

orchid rose
#

"chinese stuff" doesn't have those connotations for all of us, but there is a difference in marketing practices

clear ferry
#

@molten osprey East Indian Company you say ? or whatever the Holland equivlent was 🤣

molten osprey
#

Dutch East India Company ... yeah ... we've got a colored past 😉

orchid rose
#

I order tons of stuff from China and it's overwhelmingly good quality, especially for the price. It's just that fake products are still common

molten osprey
#

@orchid rose What I see here in Thailand is that fake is fake. And everyone knows its fake. You ask a retailer and they'll tell you "yeah thats fake". About their own stuff! I've not received any fake stuff from AliExpress.

#

Regardless ... my fav part about Ali is the disputes. Never had anything other than 100% refunds "and keep the product"

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I love aliexpress

orchid rose
#

yeah I get that everyone knows it's fake but here we're not used to that

molten osprey
#

Yeah, true enough.

clear ferry
#

@orchid rose I've bought vodka out of a trunk of a estonian car when I was in finland, I don't know what other business deals finnish people do 🤣

orchid rose
#

it took a while to understand that and once you do, it's fair enough. Still I'd prefer honesty

#

don't get me started with the alcohol taxes here atxbyea

clear ferry
#

Don't tell me about alcohol prices, a beer on the town in norway can be up to €12 🤣

orchid rose
#

yeah but you guys are rich 😉

clear ferry
#

pfff. I'm working overtime as we speak 🤣

molten osprey
#

Samsung 860 EVO 250GB : Amazon.com $60 (assuming 5% sales tax), $58 here in Thailand at an official retailer, $48 from AliExpress

#

Alcohol taxes here are ridiculous ... wine especially.

#

Had a bad experience with an Ali-bought 5-inch HDMI display yesterday

#

the "drivers" screwed my Pi into no longer booting

orchid rose
#

That 860 would be $53 in Europe (germany) including taxes. Usually for us it makes no sense to order that sort of stuff from China

molten osprey
#

turned out the drivers when being installed changed the rootfs= directive in /boot/cmdline.txt ...

#

wow thats a good price indeed

#

I bought it for my Atomic Pi, which is still 2 weeks away. So I don't mind waiting to save a few bucks.

orchid rose
#

Most of the time the bad rep that the chinese stuff gets here is when people order the new galaxy S10 from Ali for 100$ and then cry when it turns out to be shit... What do they expect....

molten osprey
#

Yeah, absolutely. "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!"

#

(preparing to build my own voice assistant devices)

clear ferry
#

I was thinking of the same

#

I just need to buy that 3d printer first 🤣

#

so sometime next year when I have time on my hands

molten osprey
#

I've heard there are places here that will let you book a 3D printer by the hour, not tried it though

eternal wasp
#

hello all. brand new here wanted to say hi. just installed hassio on my rpi3 and ready for this adventure. no experience at all but looking to learn. will consult all the docs in the rules/welcome channel

molten osprey
#

@eternal wasp Be careful, be very very careful.

clear ferry
#

welcome, and we are always helpful, just remember to be in the right channel for your question @eternal wasp read the topics 🤣

valid halo
#

Can't you just use a company like shapeways to 3D print files for you?

molten osprey
#

@eternal wasp It becomes an addictive hobby, very very quickly.

clear ferry
#

I have 2-4 hours every week to do stuff atm, so no time for printing at all 🤣

#

will be better from December when the baby starts in daycare

eternal wasp
#

tks! i think the good thing is i am very green to this and actually havent invested in any devices yet..lol

molten osprey
#

@valid halo They're from my hometown in the Netherlands. That's awesome!

clear ferry
#

@eternal wasp I started october last year, now I have 100+ devices and building more as we speak 💃

eternal wasp
#

OMG, wife would kill me

valid halo

clear ferry

I got the wife on board when I said I could build her countertop lights and a switch that turns off the whole house 🤣

valid halo
#

Though I have to worry about MAF (Mother Approval Factor)

molten osprey
#

haha

clear ferry
#

and then she said "we could use some smart lights in the bedroom"

valid halo
#

"You can do whatever gadgets you want. Just keep my netflix running."

eternal wasp
#

yeah i like your tactic... need to win the wife over with some low hanging fruit successes

clear ferry
#

yes, and I'm getting the washer and dryer to notify her when they are done now

#

so winning more over 🤣

eternal wasp
#

nice

molten osprey
#

@clear ferry I convinced mine when I showed her how motion sensors could be used to light the floor with a soft warm glow when she gets out of bed to go to the bathroom at night.

valid halo
#

Now I just need to slowly win her over on ripping the walls apart and running CAT5 everywhere

#

Maybe I'll buy her some chocolate

#

That's what the COOL kids do

molten osprey
#

@valid halo perfectly reasonable ... chocolate for ripped out walls! 😃

valid halo
#

It's gonna be really good chocolate

#

from Europe

#

You'll all see

molten osprey
#

I wonder if Shapeways will ship to Thailand...

clear ferry
#

@molten osprey I was going to build soft lights under the kick boards in the baby room, but GOD DAMNIT orderering slim\cut to order plexi glass is expensive, you have to pay for the whole plate, so best offer I got from the US with shipping was like $400 for 8 meters of plexglass cut to fit under the kickboards, so gave that up 🤷

#

@valid halo CAT5, what are you, living in 2002 or something 😉

molten osprey
#

Yikes!!

valid halo
#

What what would you use?

molten osprey
#

Nice, Shapeways does ship to Thailand.

#

CAT7!

valid halo
#

I've been told CAT6 and 7 is overkill

molten osprey
#

I'd go with CAT7, future proof it.

clear ferry
#

@valid halo CAT6 for futureproofing for sure, I don't even think you can buy cat5 over here anymore 🤷

valid halo
#

futureproof it?

molten osprey
#

So it can be used for whatever uses you can come up with in the future

clear ferry
#

bandwidth wise, and signal wise, if it will be reused for data traffic in the future

molten osprey
#

like running 10gbit wires for your MQTT!

clear ferry
#

exactly!

valid halo
#

Look to be CAT6 and 7 is for buisnesses or ridiculous people like Linus Tech Tips who fuck around with 8K footage and ridiculous file sizes

#

me*

clear ferry
#

I remember terminating CAT6A in 2005, the standard was kinda rough still, but it worked fine 🤣

#

they talked about CAT7 at that time, but I still haven't seen it go mainstream

molten osprey
#

it seems silly now to have 10gbit wires in your home, but it also seems silly now that 10mbit wires were once considered "blazingly fast" ... and thats not that long ago!

valid halo
#

I must admit I don't see the argument for 10gbit but then again networking is my weakest subject

clear ferry
#

not just 10Gbit but the actual signal quality and more

#

if you install cat5 now and people will reuse it in the future they will have to tear it down and replace it 🤷

#

if for anything else than slow serial lines

valid halo
#

Well since we plan on moving out in 5 years. That's not gonna be my problem is it

#

Muhahahaha

molten osprey
#

for a structural investment like re-wiring a house inside the walls, go for the highest specs now

#

@valid halo Resale value!

valid halo
#

I'll be honest. I'm joking about rewiring. Mom would never go for it.

molten osprey
#

haha

valid halo
#

She'd rather spend the cash on getting the floors redone

clear ferry
#

I've owned my own house for 11 years, I think about resale value still 🤣

molten osprey
#

not even with the chocolate???

valid halo
#

I'd have to get her chocolate and a spa day

molten osprey
#

hehe

valid halo
#

I've honestly been trying to treat her to a spa day

#

but she keeps not going

#

😦

#

LET ME SPEND MY MONEY ON YOU 😠

clear ferry
#

but the prices have gone up atleast 100% since I bought the house, so I should be good, I've even renovated 5 rooms so far 🤣

valid halo
#

Honestly part of me worried about making my house too smart before we eventually move

molten osprey
#

Shapeways is NOT cheap ... and I say that without any idea of what it would cost to print stuff, raw materials-wise.

valid halo
#

"Hello Mister Mod. Uh how do we make the lights turn on?"

#

molten osprey
#

@valid halo Think of it as a playground. And then you do the real one once you get your own place 😉

valid halo
#

Sure.

so I just take it when I leave

valid halo

#

I might as well rip down 200 on a Etcher 3 instead of shapeways

molten osprey

That seems to be the new darling, doesnt it?

clear ferry

valid halo

So that everyone hears about Dr Zzzs and subscribes

#

Being a youtuber feels exhausting

#

making videos and editing and promoting and telling everyone "Please Like and Subscribe and Hit the Bell and Comment and Say my name to your friends."

molten osprey
#

No, i think you had to post about the etcher rather than about drzzs

#

"SMASH" that subscribe button ... cringe

valid halo

Rather two stupid ones for that I reckon

orchid rose

having to move it around makes it less convenient as well so having two might be better

@orchid rose I worked implementing smart robots at a hospital, 20ish of them pick up crates, take them around the hospital and order and take the elevator themselves, worked a lot better than I expected

Atleast until one of them slows down in a corner with four others behind them... They have 360 presence detection and just start yelling at each other... goods transport, please move out of the way in canoe

Or when the elevator fire shutter had gone down, one was stuck yelling at the shutter for 9 hours 😞

#

I have a question about setting up redirection from outside my network

#

I bought a domain, which includes an SSL certificate that I need to create/activate so I'm working on that. Do I need to do anything aside from setting up the forward from my domain provider? And I'll need to have to certificate copied to my hassio folders and setup the http section in the config yaml?

#

Or if there's just a walkthrough you know of, I'd appreciate it. I've gone through the docs and watched the walkthrough for setting up DuckDNS but not familiar with this stuff so just playing with it

clever mortar
#

All you should need to do is simply create a hostname in your domain, and have that resolve to your WAN IP

deft reef
#

But if you know of guides or have tips, I'd appreciate it while I fumble through all of this

#

Ok, but how does that work when my IP changes?

clever mortar
#

Does your DNS provider support dynamic DNS?

deft reef
#

Not sure, I think so

clever mortar
#

If they do, then use some appropriate software to do that

#

If not, you can set your own domain's hostname as a CNAME of your DuckDNS hostname

deft reef
#

Ok, I'll need to setup something on my machine/local setup that just udpates their dns right?

clever mortar
#

Yes

deft reef
#

Ok, I wondered about that too

#

If it's silly to redirect from the domain to the DuckDNS and then just set that up

#

Or if that's reasonable

clever mortar
#

Using a CNAME isn't a redirect

#

That's an alias, and is a pretty typical way of doing that kind of thing

deft reef
#

Oh, so is the cname something I'm doing locally?

clever mortar
#

No, that's a thing in the DNS for your domain

deft reef
#

Ok

clever mortar
#

Very simply, your DNS hostname can be an A record (IP address), or a CNAME (alias for another record)

deft reef
#

So my domain links to the DuckDNS and then I is setup DuckDNS as in the many guides?

clever mortar
#

Yes

#

myhass.example.net becomes a CNAME for example.duckdns.org

#

You then update example.duckdns.org as normal

deft reef
#

Ok gotcha

#

Thank you

clever mortar
#

The SSL certificate has to be for myhass.example.net

deft reef
#

Should I just use the SSL certificate setup through DuckDNS?

clever mortar
#

No

deft reef
#

Or figure out creating the one with my domain

#

Ok, do I need both?

clever mortar
#

If you set it up with DuckDNS you cannot use your own domain

deft reef
#

Makes sense

#

I'm sure that prevents malicious redirect

#

So I setup the domain SSL and then copy that to my local setup also?

clever mortar
#

Well, more that when you enter https://myhass.example.net in the browser, if your cert is for example.duckdns.org then the browser will reject things

#

You'll need an SSL cert for the hostname you connect with

deft reef
#

Ok

#

Thank you

#

I will probably be back for more help lol

@clear ferry I have those energy monitors on my washer/dryer and it send notifications to my phone and my mom's phone but if I'm doing laundry my mom doesn't want the notifications and vice versa any ideas how to set who gets the notifications, I thought about a lovelace toggle but I don't want to have to open my phone to change who gets it

clear ferry
#

@dark swallow do it based on presence perhaps, if she's not home she won't get the notification, if that works 🤷

dark swallow
#

Yeah I was thinking that too, or putting some kind of button by the washers that activates notifications for each user

clear ferry
#

That would also be possible, to toggle a user, but it would be confusing without a display to verify the user

#

Idea, you could use a RGB light in the washroom to change colour between users being notified

#

Then you won't need a display

dark swallow
#

That's a good idea too! I have lutron products so I was thinking of using 3 button Pico remote, top button only turns on notifications for user 1, middle turns on for user 2 and button turns off notifications for both

and I would put a label on each button to clarify which does which

clear ferry

That could work also

Hey Everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself. I found Home Assistant a couple weeks ago and I've already got my system converted over from Wink... so much faster, cooler and more powerful. I'm running it on my Unraid server with a bunch of other dockers.

I now want to focus on getting my config more organized and into git. So that's what i'm working on next, and probably use that git-pull plugin.

I've been telling all my friends about the cool stuff I've been doing with HA and already got one of them to set it up on a Pi.

Just wanted to say hi! Another devout HA user from the suburbs of Chicago!

dark swallow
#

Anyone at that point where everything is up and running how they want and the only way they can keep tinkering with HA is to buy more smart home tech?

dark swallow

@clever mortar Oh trust me I know I am still tinkering but I just come to points where I am like I can keep making this just perfect or I could buy this one thing to make it easier, or to add this feature to the automation etc, it's just super tempting

unreal orbit
#

I get comfortable for a while and then I think things like "gee, opening this door by hand sure is an inconvenience" and that starts me down the slippery slope once again

dark swallow

Yup! Same here. I had an automation on my phone that set a laundry timer via nfc. Then I'm like well I can make this batter by adding energy sensors. I bought 2 of 4 sensors, now I want the other 2 sensors

#

Also my family wants to play music through the house, I made a system to do it but they "don't like it" so now I just bought 1 chromecast audio made it a little better and now I just bought a 2nd and really trying not to buy a third right now

clever mortar
#

I went Sonos

#

Not cheap, but everybody can use it

#

Once they roll out the Google Assistant support, pretty soon folks will just be able to ask for music and it'll happen

dark swallow
#

Yeah but we have existing home theater speakers in the living room and dining room, and patio which covers 80% of house but no easy way to play music through it. So that were chromecast audio 1 is. second one is for second floor, again existing speakers. and third would be for my bedroom/office again existing speakers

clever mortar
#

Nice

dark swallow
#

Also it took way too long to teach everyone how to use chromecast 3 years ago so teaching them sonos wouldn't be worth it
