How to impersonate a federal agent
be careful or they'll throw you in FBI Van 37
Come on they don't number like that, it would be 437c
It pays well
only knowing Wallace Shawn for goofy roles like that, watching him in My Dinner with Andre was a shock
I need to find motivation to setup my new networking stuff I spent so much money for :/ It would be easy if I just did it the easy way(no vlans no QoS etc), but then why did I by all these managed switches :/ ADHD/ASD procrastination at its best
No smart thermostat to already provide that data?
nope, its an apartment
i looked into it but i dont think a plug and play one exists
I actually need to see if Sensi provides ambient humidity. The sensor exists, you can see it on the display
Really? The color coding on the back looks standard. It's a bit more complex than usual "Heat, Cool, Fan, Common" but certainly not anything custom.
Hey everyone! ๐
Iโm working on a small Home Assistantโrelated project and I wanted to check first:
Is it okay to share a post about my project here, or should I post it in a different channel?Just want to make sure I follow the server rules. Thanks!
Thnx for the Quick reply I Will post my project there ๐๐ป
hey friends, I am moving in like 6 weeks and I'd like to start thinking about starting from the ground up in home automation. I have a few things decided:
- Using Home Assistant Green or maybe just kicking it into future proof mode with A Beelink N150 with HA flashed on.
- I want to start with smart switches throughout. I think I'm going with Inovelli blue or Caseta lights, but not decided. I cannot for the life of me figure out what can lights I should use. I prefer warm light but I'd like them to be dimmable and warmable using just the switches.
- Tell me what other things I should start with
Networking advice also appreciated ๐

Sick, hello fellow community members, I'll take my business to the appropriate chat
Your titties are?
ive never heard of a switch with built in color temp, but color temp controllable lights (CCT) do exist
I put this chat as a post in #1284966353798697001
it actually does seem to be semi custom to honeywell with some kind of gradual fan ramping circuit thing, there May be honeywell made commercial versions, honestly i might jsut email honeywell support and ask
Huh. Interesting.
I'd see if you can find the labeled on the terminals like you have in your photo and see if any smart ones match that.
Then it's just down to programming if they match
cause yeah its a fan coil unit not a proper hvac thing, building-wide and such
I wonder if it just opens solenoids and turns on fans
hvac stuff is accursed.
i found someone who installed a nest in place of a very very similar thermostat i have
https://gitlab.com/VanillaGorilla-/nest/-/blob/master/README.md?ref_type=heads
ah beans i think the 8575 which is the one this guy has IS 24v
yeah fuck its different, this guy has C (24V) i have N (no clue)
thats probably 24VAC logic
which is a pain in the fucking ass ๐
i did actually make a board for this I just need to actually uhh.. finish its build/test.. and probably make another version with less pain in my ass connectors tbh.
because you think its 24vac..
But its actually more like 28vac in some places because get bent we can't have transformers actually output what they say.
Boo:
mods...bad?
it was a post about him logging in to an insecure mqtt server and having it switch his entity names to "change your mqtt password" and toggling his lights on and off every 5 minutes lol
a lot of the followup comments were about how illegal and undesirable it was, so I guess pulling it down was the right call
"illegal" only because instead of shaming the companies for lax security they made it illegal to change numbers on a url
mods...good?

As a mod in another server, I prefer to be thought of as a necessity. Neither good nor bad, just required by mostly idiots.
New gas chip arrived. It's beautiful.
Not sure if the Hydrogen and Methane sensors haven't picked anything up or haven't initialized yet. I'll have to go fart on it.
Which one did you get? I've been meaning to try one out.
Purely because it was stupidly easy to integrate into esphome and I'm lazy
There are others with the same name that are cheaper. They're not the same.
Oh, and the ones labeled SCD41 are an SCD41. I highly recommend it.
Easy integration with HA is basically how I choose products these days.
@last cedar ChatGPT is discriminating against raccoons https://youtube.com/shorts/awRiiN6uoXM
You should ask it how to file a complaint about raccoon discrimination
Rock is this true?

When a single spelling mistake potentially broke all your code.... ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
We have all been there...
Compilers help. A lot

Fucking little bandits
Well this is awkward. My new gas sensor is saying there's a toxic level of methane in my kitchen, and I don't know how to verify or refute that
If you die in your kitchen, the sensor was right.
Light a match?
Toxic is 1/50th explosive
Toxicity is another hazard than the minimal explosive concentration.
Though maybe burning a candle for a bit would change the concentration
It may just need calibrating?
Too many farts
Maybe. I'll have to see if I can do so.
Which reminds me, in Borderlands 3, this happens if you stand by it long enough lol
Classy
You hear the new steam controller will Wilhelm scream using the haptics if you drop it?
this feels like ragebait: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/1tbm80f/my_wife_couldnt_remember_whether_she_had_taken/
Lol
Nfc reader and a tag on the cap is a better solution. Then you can just swap the cap to the new bottle too
or even just one of those 7-day pill things unless you don't trust yourself to load it weekly
Second one is the issue for me
I always thought of coming up with a sticker that reacted to pressure or temp that changed color for like 12 hours(if meds were BID) or 24 hours if QD
Key is refilling it right when you take the last pill
NFC tag works and doesn't require me to remeber to do that and HA is aware of it or not to scream at me during the day until I do take it
30
what?
company card!
yea
my problem is that I'm an old man and I have to take too many pills. It takes a solid several minutes to refill the organizer, and "I'll do it later" becomes "I'll do it tomorrow" as I (hopefully) pull out my pills individually and take them.
Who knew playing Mancala in after school recreation as a kid would be foreshadowing later in life. That's what I think of each week.
Mics gas sensor gives erroneous methane values when other gases spike and seems to differ based on high humidity values as well
Thereโs no calibration of a mics gas sensor they come from the factory as is
Iโm fully baited
Is that something that can easily be filtered out or is it just a functionally useless for that purpose?
Seems like I may have gotten questionable info as it is? It only measures over 1000 ppm anyway and what I found said 1000 ppm was asphyxiation range. Looking around more that seems suspect.
Quick sanity check for the room, Im reinstalling HA with a new house move and considering upgrading from a pi 4 to pi 5. Ive got about 80 devices ATM, and I'd like to do more local voice assistant integration I'm the future. Is the pi 5 overkill for this?
The pi 5 is sitting on my drawer doing nothing so I figured this was a better use
Sounds like #1284966540617449515
Probably not though I dunno?
I haven't played with voice on a low power device, not sure if it can even do it reasonably
Has anyone hacked support at all for the nest 2nd gen thermostats at all? I am getting home assistant setup again and would like to see if it possible until I can buy an ecobee or something.
So mean!
Good think it will remember to make no mistakes though

ai tokens?
Yep just 1 provider, I do have a problem
wtf could you be doing to use that much?
I ask myself the same question. I think I am same on about 6 providers.
you ask yourself? you sleep sex chatting up thge ai and not remember it?
Nah man building something an got too deep into it.
I had almost forgot they existed

Ms. Pac-Man good?
@static schoonerhow the whisker breaking weights through the intergration been for ya?
Did it do that? Seems to be working fine for me
according to git it was a backend thing on thier end so the HA intergration shouldn't be working for anyone
the weight part
everything else works fine
didnt know if you were tracking weights through it like I was so thought i'd ask lol
Mine seems to be working fine
interesting
I track all my cats' weights
It's possible that I just haven't noticed them updating. They're not broken
yea
i have a history chart card on my dashboard.. all the cat weights look like a flat line since earlier this month lol
They seem about what I expect and roughly equivalent to the app
Oh, ok
I just hadn't noticed
I notice when the integration can't log in or fails to report stats
๐คท
I mean, I want to be outraged, but I lack the evidence and justification
thats weird. cache not updated for you? how can it be "backend" issue according to the dev if you were not impacted
wait. you buy stuff from whisker like liners or litter right?
I wonder if your account go some special flag lol
subscription customers get backup api access lol
Got me
I just wish they'd release the hopper for the 5 already. Now two cats are using the 3 that doesn't track weight
No, not until they release the hopper
whicker is quickly heading down the path of bad greed
I been looking at alternatives
They don't lock you into supplies, which I like
not yet
once I started seeing the LR's at like petsmart and walmart I knew it was going to get ugly
my scale for myself decided to appear on my network and autodiscover by HA so my weight is in HA now lol
small automation im proud of: my apartments AC isnt perfect so when i detect the temperature gets too hot, i turn off the dehumidifer and close the blinds, just to manage it better, esp if im asleep or something
Anal-retentive climate control micromanagement is one of my primary uses ๐
sorry its what type of climate control micromanagemnt
sadly cant install a smart thermostat, not anywhere near easily, cause my apt has this bizarre semi custom fan coil manager thing ugh
not with that attitude you can't. /s
i mean ive seen this gh schematic of someone wiring in a nest thermostat into a very similar unit
more limiting tends to be the lack of the proper goddamn wires ๐

When your day is dragging because everything seems to be working like it's supposed to for once....

Mods are asleep this is now a water cooled pc channel
I have a radiator, but it's not in a PC, does that still count
It's a water cooler nonetheless
just had a MYGGBETT door sensor die on me
it survived just long enough for it to be paired into my thread network
then it immediately died
off to ikea returns department I guess
These are the radiators for our water cooled servers at work, can I play in this competition? ๐
Ok sure, attach the picture twice, whatever discord
Needs more rgb
Hilariously, there actually are some in the heat exchanger, but that's inside the building.
RAID 1 picture.
If you cross your eyes it looks kinda 3d
finally actually using my Fedora install to develop HA, doing it in wsl was miserable
this should be the easiest fork ever, my switchbot curtain 3 has a device setting for the speed, i want to make that into an entity so i can control it automaticlaly, its so shrimple
famous last words
bet
i haven't been a technician for a little while now but these were the primary water cooled servers i worked on
i'm sure technician pay would go up if they had to be scuba certified as well
im TRYING to ADD updates and support
seems like you should install a supported installation method
๐ญ im trying to develop HA rn
this is how youre supposed to do that
this is utterly baffling, speed is literally built in variable per open/close event and yet its a config option and not an entity
This would be good in the dev channels
fair
yes but the point of the current boom is to avoid paying the meat slaves
server from work I'm finally getting about to try and RMA the bad cpu in.. its probably one of those bad 13900k's

My partner also needs a laptop and we can't get her one since 50% of the price would be memory
macbook neo
I ain't doing the support for a Macbook
Had one for work and promptly ( 2 days ) replaced it with a windows machine
I mean, windows causing me so much more pain
I cannot possibly see how ๐
But honestly, i would say the same about MacOs X hahaha
The lady at the store asked me for a return reason, I just said: this is not for me
Have this chime box but I don't actually have a door bell, what should I do with it?
I run linux everywhere where I can but in the laptop space there is not a better choice than a neo at the price point
Linux I run on ~10 machines here, but that's infrastructure
throw it out.
Give it away as to not generate E-waste
Often you have groups in cities for this purpose.
I'm in a few for Montrรฉal, on facebook, and regularly give away my old unused electronics there.
People are happy to come pickup
i really doubt that anyone is gonna care for an ancient door buzzer..
I bought this one just for fun lol I want something fun to do with it
Bought this brand new in 2026
its using the same tech as the ancient stuff.. its ancient. ๐
Many people are not as wealthy and would love a free object to thinker with.
That's a very privileged thing to say ๐
Not all can afford new stuff
Person at the store gave me a weird look when I bought it
its a solenoid and a spring.
hilariously limited tinkering potential
You can make it ring when something happens
This thing literally costs less than a meal in this city if you can't afford this you probably shouldn't be living in this city
Not all have disposable income for hobbies ๐
... so you bought something just for buying it and not having a use for it?
he was right to give you a look.
you have chosen the wrong server to be in.
Nah, I think I fit right in ๐
I mean it was pretty cheap (110twd or ~4usd)
Not here
Rice is,in no way, over 2$ usd for a pound
And if so... Damn... America be fucked haha
Idk why one would need such high powered door bell but
(Yes this damn thing draws 1.6A at 110V)
its compressing a spring and using a magnet to do it.
Damn...I always assumed those were a speaker and some electronics! TIL!
Go look on eBay or aliexpress or something you can probably find one for a very reasonable price
Oh, It's not worth paying for ๐ But If I come across one on the Bunz trading group I'll definitely trade something for it haha
If i'm lucky it'll be free
the more sus part is having 1.6a over a goddamn standard tiny-bitch-wire doorbell
300W is insane yeah
110V mains here
Oh you're Us based as well!
the correct response is.
"I'm so sorry."
I'm living just above them. I hope for the best ๐
The instruction manual says to not operate it for more than 2 seconds continuously (as if whoever is pressing the door bell has ever seen this)
probably also because if you're doing it constantly you're also just running the solenoid against its end stop too
which is just of course.. generating heat
No
Railguns should not be overcharged or they start to melt when fired.
not a railgun.
coilgun technically
Do we really need guns in our chimes?! /s
I love how point 1 of the instruction manual says to shut off power when in practice no electrician here actually follows that
Depends on the visitors.
'The rubber in my boots ground me'
@iron granite I Was about to ping the mods there
Doing ads for bitcoin ๐
Oh no. I had forgotten that guy existed until now. I can still hear it

No no no!
If you wanted a more permenant solution, Alarmtech make a bracket called the MC-L that would do the job, but it is no where near as cool as this

Done
I don't know if there's a bunch of (former?) Curb users here, but I stumbled over this earlier this week, and it works amazing. Great writeup! https://github.com/pvanbaren/ha-energycurb
When Elevation shut off their API/servers I powered off my Curb devices and had essentially given up on them. They are back online and running locally ๐
has anyone ever had issues restoring a zha backup to a new adapter? it seems to just hang at the restoring popup. been here for ~20 minutes.

Hi cool water people
Sorry, I only have raccs
Whatโs that? Google search brought up a lot

why does that have creepy frame interpolation
Hey now, itโs just socially awkward frame interpolation
Definitely not over complicated doorbell control system
Hey, at least it's Matter though?
idk what this channel is supposed to be but i cant find a comprehensive guide like the arch wiki about homelabbing
what do you guys recommend
I don't want to deal with IPv6 nightmares yet so all I'm using the Tapo integration
I only have the bare minimum amount of IPv6 to make my matter over thread network functional
Man, who knew it would be so hard to purchase a door that both has some level of ventilation, but also has some level of sound reduction!
Like, there's several places that sell them, but not in Texas
is aanyone else upset that the govee bulbs need to talk to telementry servers to work?
since the goveeelan app is deprecated
Any cool devices that are like a mini touchscreen with buttons or a magnetic on wall with 4-10 prigrmgabble buttons so can do multi automation easily in a room / zone
Hek would be cool multi intercoms

well i've switched from Cloudflare Tunnel to Pangolin self-hosted + a VPS and I'm very satisfied so far
They don't seem easy to train
Omg a pangolin
Look at this viscious beast
Teefs of death
Raccoon navy in training
what were you using the tunnel for?
ingress without opening ports; probably.
i mean i was thinking about using it on my PC as a secured API endpoint to be called from a website like an S3 bucket for images to be loaded from my pc
ever since i purchased my sets of govee lights and tried to use them in home assistant, i was disappointed... the lan api isn't even documented worth crap
lan api is deprecated ๐
only the goveetomqtt or whatever one works
and that isnt fully remote, it requires the bulbs to check in with an iot server running on aws
much cheaper than phillips tho
Nice thing is most Govee controllers can just be cut off the strip theyโre controlling and replaced with WLED
Ah you mentioned bulbs, oops
Plenty of Zigbee bulbs on the market besides Hue
@hollow pilot remote access for Home Assistant and Gotify
its annoying that govee hasn't updated all their shit to work with matter over wifi
since its.. a fucking wifi protcol and some of their newer stuff does
lol eufy released a whole new lock with thread / matter instead of just updating their identical lock they already sell with it.
companies like that annoy me.
Iโve got some Sengled Zigbee bulbs, they work fine.
color and temp control
cheap also
Less things on WiFi the better
nocie
have you looked into orein for smart light?
nope.
their matter bulbs look idential to the govee ones
bet they're made in the same fucking factory.
๐
i wouldnt be surprised but lord does it work so well with everything i have now
but the colors arent as vibrant
I got some govee ones on sale. they work for what I want
which mostly is adjustable lights where I am.. and daylight alarm
dude im so happy im not alone on this. i do the same thing, i have it set to 20 or 30 minuntes before my actual alarm and its helped me wake up better in the morning
almost like humanity evolved to do that sort of thing
who tf knew lmao
Morning
Yes. It works very well. The Gen 2 hardware itself is very high quality, but as we know, Google turned off its cloud server and access to the phone app. The NLE project fixes this with a new server, either use their server or self-host and be 100% local. Now that Nest Thermostats sell for <$20 on eBay, I'm using six of them, one in every room or at least that is the plan. I'm currently testing prior to deployment. Google "no longer evil" for more info
Oh I think I've seen that project. Thanks! I can easily self host that. Will give it a go.
Seriously, at one time the most powerful computer on Earth (the Cray 2) was actually cooled by flooding. Of course, water would be bad as it would short out the electronics. They use a non-conductive, non-reactive liquid. There were bubbles used to circulate the liquid, and some techs placed plastic fish inside just for fun. The entire computer lived in a cold bath.
so I recently replaced the 80 different ways I do things on my home network(homelab at this point) with consul and nomad, and my HA pi has been dying for the last year after like 7ish years of service, finally bit the bullet and migrated off HAOS on it to a nomad container job, and besides the nightmare of porting it even with the HAOS backup as the jumping off point, I'm really liking the new setup, way faster, less errors, and it has the system resources to run much heavier addons and stuff
I would say that the maintenance would be enormous but with the amount of fittings in such a system and the uptime requirements I'm not so sure anymore
The fluid would probably cost big bucks tho
take a look at the evaporative cooling a lot of the crypto miners got into, that stuff is insanely expensive
they'd immerse the hardware in the stuff, then they had a heat exchanger hooked to a condensation plate that would drip it back in, was like a very toxic terrarium
How can I use another language for the media player in an automation?
I've set piper for it and the sentence in my native language. Without setting a language it's saying it in English, but when I set de_DE it still says it in English.
Piper is set up outside of HA, but it works fine when asking other stuff. Only when I want to trigger the sentence in an automation it can only speak English.

Most of my LED strips at my house (bookshelves, ambient lighting, etc.) are analog strips. Getting ready to put a new strip around my office desk. Deciding between CCT tunable vs full color. Just don't know what I'd use full color for (other than when music is playing, maybe). Anyone have interesting uses for full color LED strips within HA? Primary use case is just ambient lighting so CCT is likely best route
No worries about matching to my other strips. Or else I'd just use the same analog auxmer strips here as well
may go color just for the eventual sendspin visualizer support with LED strips actually. could be a fun party trick
https://www.amazon.com/BTF-LIGHTING-Flexible-Density-Uniform-Controller/dp/B0CFY4M89V these have 90 CRI on white channel (basically good white light) and ability to do rgb. best of both worlds. just buy a 24v led controller (like a gledopto or similar off amazon) and a 24v power supply (5-10amp)
if you want to buy a better controller look into a dig quad or dig octa https://quinled.info/quinled-dig-octa/
thank you! more interested in interesting use cases with full color LED strips (like automations, etc.). I'm running a handful of quinled controllers now and love them
soI'm just thinking through if I just use my usual Auxmer analog strips for "high quality" lighting or get a little funky with some colors haha
these still give you the ability to tune the white to be warm/cool
(I do love the effects you can do...for example, my dart board is hooked up to WLED)
true, best of both worlds
quindor sells a better version of these ws2814 but i've never tried them
apparently they are much brighter and even better colors
I looked at that one as well, maybe I'll just pony up since it's for my office desk and I use it a lot
looks great
The LEDs cost more than the shelf lol
right? lol I bought some of the high power Auxmer strips to eventually put in my kitchen. pricey boys
i havent heard of auxmer i'll have to look that up
high CRI analog strips essentially. recommended a lot in Quindor's discord for LEDs around the house. consistent, 5-10 year warranty, etc
granted who knows if I could tell the difference between them and the FCOB strips now
the thing that matters more than the LEDS is always the power side.
leds very rarely ever just fail outright.
usually its something in the power supply side of things.
yeah and your aluminum channel for heat dissipation depending on power
yeah plus they run hot so not being in a place to get some air will let them cook
jinx
I'm a little surprised my 3d printers have lasted as long as they have tbh
bright fuckers.
but also inside an insulated 3d printer at the highest point so err.
Ikea matter over thread devices connection issues:
"That white thing next to the 3D printer (Alpstuga) did you unplug it?"
"Yes"
water heater ahh moment
I have received a case for my Bday :3
Required me to stop using my triple rad for the CPU, but a new cooler arrives today, air based, to replace it!
It looks insane tho
let's see how long I last on apple home before I rage install home assistant at my rental place
You know you can just pipe Hokmekit into HA and have the best of both worlds? ๐
These are matter over thread bulbs but I just can't be bothered
And also 3 out of 5 bulbs have already started making coil whine noises less than 2 hours into service
Aqara bulbs is going on my never again list
Correction: 5 out of 5
OOF
That's why I stuck to Philips for 40 bulbs
Now I have 15 ikeas too, but those I'm less satisfied
Their color render is not as accurate
Philips... is a mixed bag
I have Philips LED bulbs that flicker at grid frequency because they are too cheap to include a proper rectifier circuit with smoothing
Was wondering why my phone camera was behaving weird and traced it back to those Philips bulbs
you install them into apple home, then install the homekit bridge integration in home assistant, that's it.
i don't have a spare system at rental place to put home assistant on
sorry for your loss
- 2x 100k resistors
- potato
- some wires and shit
this setup has been confirmed to run latest HA Core
no raccoon??
how dare you. philips is our lord and savior
Philips makes the entire range from cheap e-waste tier bulbs to top of the line so Philips doesn't automatically mean good quality
i only buy hue :x
Hue is fantastic. The price isn't, and it isn't great that they don't provide the firmwares openly, but the bulbs are quality hardware.
Honestly, the firmware bit is probably the one sticking point that keeps me from buying much more of it.
They definitely have the best hardware PWM out of any smart bulb I've used
They support crazy long, smooth transitions
Yup
they are so goddamn expensive though
the ones I pulled even still work despite having cracked housings (the ceramic part or whatever; but those bulbs were also like.. the original RGBW ones)
but yeah their pricing.. and their app getting progressively shittier..
do wonder why they're hiking it so hard instead of just.. remvoing it
was there some contract shit that requires tehm to have it?
I did up to 600seconds
If i recall correctly
I mean they supported daylight alarms so unsuprised of long transition stuff
The only other brand that's really been light-output-quality competitive is LIFX, but being WiFi they're solidly off a lot of people's shopping lists. I will admit I've not used a post-acquisition product either, so no idea if the quality has kept up
The supported length of transition on those is so long you have to edit it in YAML mode because the UI won't let you input a big enough number ๐
Have done 30 minute 0-100 with zero issues
( 2 kits broke down at the PSU level tho)
I also got a LIFX bulb and one that does infrared

I have a fancy dual conversion UPS for my servers and switches... we have had 2 power outages in 6 years of living in our current house
I've had like 2-3 over a 10 years period
but you see.. the thing that fucks with electronics isnt exactly the outages
One of them I had to pull out the ecoflow battery pack to find out whether it would in fact run my laser printer, because I was right in the middle of printing character sheets for my partner's D&D game
its all the ripples/momentary issues
that cause problems over time

For our datacentre at work we have these ๐
https://new.abb.com/ups/power-and-voltage-conditioners/voltage-conditioners/pcs100-avc-40
basically the same thing on a different scale.
Biggest one we have is 1.5MVA, between the transformer cabinet and active electronics it weighs around 4.5 tons
its basically just an inductor with some control stuff inside for monitoring and etc..
since inductors are reallly good at saying "fuck off" to changes in voltage.
I need my solar power mount
These ones are active.
Half of it is a giant fuck-off 1:1 wire-wound transformer (that cabinet alone weighs 2900kg), the other half is more or less a dual-conversion UPS with a capacitor instead of batteries, that it uses for "correction"
But will do near-100% correction of line voltage in the range of about 70-120% of normal (~170 - 290V)

i dont follow. we still get firmware updates via @mystic cypress being awesome and the firmware updates are also so minimal that if we never updated we'd never notice for almost the entire product line cuz they ship with good firmware
I use ZHA. To my knowledge there's no way to identify updatable devices or apply those firmware updates via ZHA at this time. They just show as firmware unknown.
That said, I admit it's more about obsession than necessity.
Julian now works for the open home foundation so thatโs surprising. I doubt itโs true it just needs some yaml edited to enable most likely
To my knowledge the official stance is that ZHA will only offer officially sourced firmwares. If there's another route it's news to me.
y'all how cursed is it to be controlling zigbee2mqtt from a lighting network?
Correction: this is the official stance with Z-Wave. Zigbee has no official stance posted that I can find. Z-Wave stance below:
Warning: We will not accept firmware updates hosted by third parties. All updates must come from the respective device manufacturer. We make an exception for firmwares that are publicly hosted by the manufacturer, but those will still require the manufacturer's review before merging.
like, an IP network that's mostly in place to control wifi/ethernet-based lighting, but for some reason you've chosen it to host mqtt? Or is this something even weirder, like piggybacking on a matter/thread network?
Found out how to manually apply them via ZHA. So that part is possible. But yeah, there is no "enable a secondary repo" thing. Not unless someone has written something truly cursed in hacs anyway.
Mind you, I know how to make said cursed hacs thing, but I refuse.
I have these zigbee smart outlets that I'm controlling from the lighting console through sACN to OLA to MQTT to zigbee2mqtt to the broker to the smart outlet
wdym it doesnโt wear out
like it doesnโt use varistors?
@unborn merlin if you dive in on their website it says their multi stage surge protection is using MOVs, so it definitely wears out and will need replaced over time
if it fails on like most surge protection devices you wonโt even know, so you should just periodically replace them
youโll have to read into it to find out if they fail on or off, like 99% of the ones iโm aware of fail on (i.e. it keeps working when the movs have been used up, which will happen over regular minor surge suppression from standard use over time)
I think some of the tripp-lite ranges fail off
fail off is nice since you donโt need to replace them nearly as often since youโll have a clear indicator when it actually needs replaced
ah yes, after 5 months of having a raspberry pi in production I just went ahead and finally added backups of the critical configuration files

Weโre working on showing more updates by other manufacturers, including Hue. Technically, itโs already ready, but when we release firmware updates to all HA users by default, we have to make sure theyโre like 100% stable. For example, the recent Hue updates pushed to Z2M seem to cause an issue when using the newer-style Hue dimmer directly bound to a bulb.
For now, you can just enable the Z2M extra provider for ZHA. But do note that not all firmware on there may be completely stable, e.g. you may want to avoid updates for Tuya devices, and generally wait a few days before installing an update to make sure itโs not pulled due to some issues.
ZHA has a beta channel for the central zigpy-ota repo already, but weโll expose that in the UI soon. The third-party manufacturer firmware will likely roll out there first.
I never used a raspi
I would have to check when I first used HA

Man, Unifi drives me nuts sometimes. I was trying to figure out why the hell some hosts could ping a local device and others couldn't (no route to host) and it seemed to be related to a failure to receive an ARP response from that device. Hosts that already had the MAC address worked fine, but ones that didn't (or had their ARP cache cleared) couldn't communicate with other devices. If I manually set the MAC address in the ARP cache, it worked fine. And then, of course, I google for it and it seems to be a thing: https://community.ui.com/questions/Longstanding-ARP-Broadcast-Issues-driving-me-insane/4f67e6f0-0887-47e1-a478-2086f29e4763?reply=3
I like their stuff, but they really do have stupid issues sometimes
seriously
it's maddening that I need to care about this stuff
if I was "just a user", I would have kicked this thing's ass by now
Fortunately, I could do some basic debugging and then know what to Google for. Otherwise, it's just a completely ambiguous issue and I doubt I would have found useful search results
why can some hosts ping a device and others can't?
when I manually cleared the ARP cache on my main server, the problem got substantially worse and that was a clue
I had that issue on a Netgear Orbi for a while. Never found a fix, it just went away eventually. Workaround? I'd ssh through a middle device and ping from the device I wanted to connect to back to the one I wanted to connect from, then wait 30 seconds or so.
Amusingly, this suggests turning on "Proxy ARP", while others suggest turning it off ๐คท: https://tellmeaboot.com/post/2021/ubiquiti-ap-proxy-arp/
there should be an option to randomly turn it on and off and hopefully it will work at least half the time
Your friendly neighborhood ip instead of hostname will save you from headaches like this
This was all with IP addresses. Nothing to do with hostnames
ARP doesn't care about hostnames
That's what was so vexing. Even the lowest level of communication wasn't working
who has 10.0.1.100? tell 10.0.1.1

๐คฃ
I'm considering it. Mount the sensor near the attic entrance, run the cable into the attic and then along the base of the swamp cooler ducting. That way if the ducting starts leaking water, I know immediately. Last time that happened... Well, see attached image.
... i'd just make sure it can't possibly leak like that.. water should only be where it belongs in any hvac..
Do you know how swamp coolers work?
I'm guessing the pause means no, and that's okay.
Basically you have a basin of water on the roof, you pump that water through a huge block of cellulose, then you use a giant squirrel cage type fan to draw air through that block and into the vent. In a proper system, it shouldn't leak water, it should just have some minimal condensation. But we're talking about systems that are recirculating water constantly all summer, and that water is generally going in at 500+ ppm hardness. As it evaporates, it leaves the minerals behind. Those minerals can chew through metal. It makes maintenance critical, and it means leaks happen.
Huge blocks of cellulose for the record. 12" thick, 20" tall...
Or maybe taller. I don't remember
I do remember throwing the old ones off the roof. :P
They were heavy after five years of mineralization.
But yeah, point is, not having it happen again would be great. I'll probably run a leak sensor anyway. Though thinking about it, I think I'll run it over the wooden rafters the water trickled down rather than the metal. Don't want it to ding on condensation from basic operation.
I have water leaks but I havenโt installed them yet
I was kinda salty my home insurance wonโt give me a discount for them bc they want me to use a specific brand of WiFi leak sensor and Iโm not doing that
That's remarkably lame.
probably because that brand specifically reports back to them I'd bet.
I doubt its that nefarious in this case. Probably just got corp approval as "it works"

It's been interesting watching this shitfight about the automatic updates brewing.
People are not happy about Ubiquiti's decision to force-update the apps after an OS update on the host
I updated the OS on my UDM SE earlier today, and it didn't force update Protect to 7.1.69, it stayed on 7.0.107. I think it did force update Network to 10.3.58.
Still the forced updates are annoying, especially when there's a fix for exploits being used in the wild
TIL that is happening?
did not realize that was a thing
ubiquiti frequently ships broken firmware so i dont see why that's acceptable lol
It's in the release notes

what does it do that Portainer doesn't ?
Hi Limburger, I made a screencast in shameless-self-promotion. But main features from portainer are Workflow based automations, Role based (local accounts and ID providers (MS Entra, Google Workspace, (OIDC and Oauth next release)) access, Shop for default applications (now only 60 mainly focused on home automation, but will expand soon). In app notifications, external notification (email (smtp, exchange online, gmail), whatsapp, telegram, signal, teams, slack, discord, etc.. , will expand on request). Edittable dashboard. Etc.. All free for homelab and non-commercial users. No feature behind paid subscription or business license. And I am not done, because I want to make it as easy for myself to. 1 of the next features on my roadmap is container transfer (from one environment to another).
F you lightning. Ugh
According to HA, this zigbee bulb is off. I have another doing the same thing, and they won't do a factory reset either. But they otherwise work. I lost my big 1500va UPS, and that had my main server, my HA machine AND my DNS server plugged into it.
The DNS server is a pi 5, and it won't power up at all. No lights. Plugged a standard USBC into it and it gets a red light so it should be ok if I get a new power supply for it. Oh, and the dumb motion spotlight over my garage door? It's just always on now. Ugh.
Oh, and one of my smart switches is completely dead, too. But in a bit of divine providence that particular switch was the last tuya junk I had and I was dragging my feet to replace it lol
Sorry you have to deal with this, was it a direct or indirect strike?
Surge from a way away?
Hit was next door. I'm next door to a car repair shop and one of their cars was hit. Blew out all the glass in it, and fried the entire electrical system in that car.
We're lucky that we didn't lose more stuff to it here honestly
My neighbor had a bit of a rough patch a few years back and sold a chunk of his land. A small used car seller bought it, and they built a small shop back there to fix up the cars they buy on auction before they put them on their actual lot in the city about 30 miles from me.
It can be a pain when they have an auto hauler show up and block the road to load or unload. Thankfully there's more than one way into my little rural neighborhood.
Did you lose your main server/etc? Or just the UPS
Just the ups and the pi5 power supply
Everything else plugged into it seems to be ok.
Problem is, the server draws more wattage than either of my other UPSs can handle, so it's now in the "surge only" side of the largest remaining one.
I had the 1500va/900w one, and my opnsense router, hass box, DNS server and the main server were all plugged into it. I also had a 375va/300w one that had my two switches, and a pair of 480va/350w ones each have a wifi AP in, in other parts of the house. So I moved the AP in the master bedroom to the 375, moved the opnsense, hass minipc, and the switches to the 480. The server is in one of the 480s non battery plugs. And the DNS server will go into the 375 once I replace the power supply for it. But replacing the big UPS is gonna be a bit. I snagged this one off a crackhead for like 20 bucks on FB marketplace. It lasted a year, soo. ๐คฃ
What sucks is, I was packing away a little bit of money to replace the 15 year old WiFi APs with a couple of nice PoE access points so I could repurpose or even just sell, the two 480 APs. Those two do not have any sort of management port so you can't monitor them for runtime etc. the little 375 has that, but I wasn't using it since the 1500 did too
Yeah, thanks. I'm back and mostly running. I just currently have no battery backup for my file/media server for now. Jellyfin actually runs as an app under HASS on the microPC due to it having a better GPU for transcoding, but all the media is stored on my 48TiB file server.
I would've been SERIOUSLY upset if the UPS failed to protect that one. so. phew
Once I feel like it, I'll take the offending UPS apart and see what, exactly, is damaged inside. I have a soldering iron and an electronics background... so I'm fairly hopeful I can actually fix it. It's probably just an internal fuse or something. The non-battery side of that UPS still works actually. just no front display, no beeps, and nothing on the battery side, but the batteries still have voltage, so they're fine.
Ugh. Blown fuse and mosfet transistor. So far. Welp, guess it's time to start shopping.
Your only two choices are new non rack mount ups like an APC or used rack mount ups and buy a new battery. There are usually some used ones for sale on r/hardwareswap but imo itโs not worth the premium for rack mount ups setups
I disagree on the basis that you have a rack.
Rack ones are nice.... but you limit the batteries
They make lfp replacements now!
My 1000 VA SMX one takes 4x9Ah ones, have seen higher voltage with multiple 6V ones and they are just bloody awful to deal with
I have heard that they don't work properly due to the ups charging it like a vrla, but the battery not being like that?
They do provide power in the event of a power cut though
I have looked at, for example, bluetti units or ecoflow with their 10ms switching, one of those would make sense if it was actually 10ms
My bluetti is 0ms and it's true
Wait wait wait
The other inverter is 10ms
Apex 300
Oh that is a big boy
Though I am sure there others have it too
I am going to have a victron setup very soon, but that is also 20ms (although it seems to be a lot quicker than that)
When I say very soon, I mean if I get on with it
๐คฃ
I mean anything <20ms is fast enough that only the most sensitive electronics will notice
I will have to test it really
But yes the apex 300 is literally 0ms with how they have the inverter and battery setup.
Or, I could just go grab this one. ๐คฃ
It needs batteries, but otherwise works fine. And guess what, I have batteries that fit it perfectly. ๐คฃ
I will also say I do prefer the solar generators to traditional UPS. Only because during a power outage I like my network to be online and I have a paired down network to do that
And can run it on solar
Where I live there's a monthly fee if your solar is tied into the grid at all.
I intentionally have my solar not connected to the grid
All well and good, but I would need an inverter, some batteries and panels to install solar all of which is more expensive than even a brand new 1500va UPS.
Not to mention the bms system for charging and discharging said batteries using said panels.
That's fair and I do have my big stuff on an actual ups. The Nas and some Networking equipment. The core network is on the apex right now to keep it online if we have a power outage. 2 n100s for my backup Plex server, home assistant and the udm pro with 1 ap
I'd like to rig it up that to power my rack is all solar but will shut down the big stuff in case of an outage
my proxmox mini pc wont post
These ones are not great, they had one that had some gunk inside that was flamable iirc
And those didn't test the battery every 2 weeks, so you never knew if battery was ok
I know they don't use the dangerous gunk anymore
And I know the business (PR) models do test their batteries, because I have one
But can't answer for that exact one
It's usually fairly easy to throw a cron schedule for a monthly battery test. I had that setup on my FreeBSD server for the old APC 1500
And this is the post 2020 model, you can tell by the existence of the USB ports.
I have a PR1000 tower model, it is time for its 2nd set of batteries, it has been running flawlessly since 2015 ish
The display has never worked properly though, got it open boxed from Poland way back
Try fedex
you can get bms's configured to work with it I think
This is game changing if so
Side effect of banishing my big desktop into occasional remote use only is that my UPSโ vampire loads are higher than their typical loads most of the time
UPSes? UPSen? UPSi?
but me I went with DC-ATX supply for new server build and using an industry 24VDC UPS instead.
๐
skip that messy extra AC conversion shit.
Iโve decided the scientific name is UPSopodes
Some ups have no issue with lfp, some do.
the BMS can fake the majority usually.. but it will depend. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Yeah the lfp batteries I was looking at were designed for this not cheapest they sell
thus why I do it myself! /s
a wall full of about.. 120ah of 24v batteries
that's a lot of ah
well not 24v batteries yet, but will be
one might say aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
assembling larger for an office thjing at work..
280ah ๐
48v pack made from 4x shucked batteries
also literally 260lbs or so
Terrareese. Like the plural of goose
Dunno if there's a channel for this or nah, just a general question; does HA have any anti-brute-force login security? I fear with my HA domain being openly accessible, it can attempt to be bruted
It would make sense to ask in #1284966540617449515
Oh its a config question?
yes

So my recently-graduated daughter is at her job tonight, and about 30 minutes ago my wife gets a surreptitiously-filmed video of an altercation at her work.... of a full grown man throwing things at her and the other lady she was working with tonight, dollar store prob 5 minutes from the house... Fortune is with the guy because he was gone by the time I got there. Dad mode was -fully- engaged.....
small town tho. so I'll know who he is, and probably where he lives by tomorrow afternoon... and as I work at the county jail, I have LOTS of sheriff deputy friends....
it's technically assault. the other lady that was there tonight is the assistant store manager, and she told him to not come back. so if he does, he's gonna take the wee-woo ride.
nah its nothing.
since its just some wage slave he's assaulting thats normal! /s (god I hate this country.)
send your daughter to waffle house; she must learn combat..
late to the conversation but I also use portable power stations, and some small UPS units. I just swapped from the bigger UPS units I have to portable power stations because replacing batteries every 10 years or units, I suppose versus replacing batteries every three was getting a bit tiring. and the power stations work just fine as a UPS even though I can't monitor them nearly as well
I could I am sure I could create an automation to shutdown the server if the power is out but the switches and stuff would be harder
thus why I am going DC UPS that's based off an industrial unit..
because that thing is hilariously programmable and controllable.. ๐
yeah I need to do some work and figure out how to do a automation that would turn off a smart power plug to one of my power stations when the wattage on a set of plugs hits a certain level or near it so that I do not go over it and trip a breaker
because I realized with these portable power stations, they're kind of a game changer in terms of how much power they can store
BMS for the LFP batteries will talk to an esp32 probably.
will have that thing manage most of the power stuff
There is an intergration with bluetti that you could switch the charge mode
i'm using anker unfortunately and the mqtt integration works pretty well, but polling consistently to determine charge percentage eats up possibly more battery than it's worth. i think i'll need to do some timing, math and ultimately it'll depend on if it's one of the days in the summer that doesn't really cool off at night
just one of those projects that I'll eventually get around to, ya know?
at this rate I'll probably get it set up and then we'll buy a house and it won't be an issue anymore
Aeotec CT clamp, then automate based on that
innnnteresting
though a whole home energy monitoring system is what I'm looking into long term
Also there is now this fucking thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HccE10EY0I
Everybody needs a UPS but traditional UPS's rely on ancient battery technology. This new Sierro compact UPS uses Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries which is very unusual in stand alone UPS, but whats better is this costs less than $300. This is a big deal for point of use power backup!

This is NOT an affili...
entirely fair, its just a decent price though you can find similar from oupes
bluetti has their fridge one too but its more money
very adorable they have extended warranty shit on the kickstarter too
what, that they want to get more money out of you for something they already claim lasts 20 yrs?
no, it's encouraging that people are attempting to try to make stuff like this affordable
what strikes me as odd with these liPo battery UPS's though is that the price seems to be so high for what is such a small capacity
I skipped to to the part where that was to make sure it was there. That is something that makes the solar generators more appealing as a UPS. Sure safely shutting down is great but also is having internet during an outage and being able to quickly throw panels out when needed is huge
sorry
lfp is still better than lead acid, isn't it?
lfp still lasts longer than lead acid, doesn't it?
miles better, yes
(most) LFP is heavier than lipo with a lower density but.. for battery backups that hardly matters (though BYD or whatever in china did manage a fancy LFP pouch cell thing for their cars.)
yes thus why I am going to my DC ups with.. 48 LFP cells in a 8S6P configuration
because I fucking despise those stupid pissant UPS's that kill their batteries after like 3-5yrs with no use
funny enough its going in a rack case from an old UPS's extra-battery rack mount thing
gonna end up similar weight but with much higher capacity.
yeah, the lead acid UPS's that I've got lying around and still have after replacing kind of suck because I have to either trickle use them by something or just get rid of them because they'll die soon on their own with no use anyway
even got laser-cut plates to clamp them properly
because LFP want/should be clamped and blah blah
even funnier: that was delivered by UPS

Is there an easy and safe way to do this without learning about battery technologies lol
is it possible to get HA / some other service that links to it to call my phone? like using my phone number? im looking to make a find-my-device kinda thingy.
has anyone made an esphome-like thing for custom matter/thread devices?
if not i want to make one is all
Esphome also has their dedicated discord guild
i know but it wouldnโt be esphome
isnโt the whole point of esphome that it uses their api? either over wifi or thread
this would make matter-compatible devices
Matter is just using wifi or threads either way
If they have tooling for it, their discord will know
#the-workshop is our diy place but id guess they have a deeper understanding of why or why not this exists
alr iโll go ask there ๐
Buy a solar generator
Those also cannot be stored without discharge cycles
I mean mine are always plugged in
That's good but not putting cycles on them
Cycle this cycle that
insulation seems to be doing well
its really not that much
but you do sorta need to learn a bit
I think I just made the single stupidest automation ever
When my air purifier detects a spike of pollution in the air, which half of the time is caused by me vaping weed, my speaker says "dude I'm so high right now woah"
Also cool that it's very visible when my portable AC in my apartment hit equilibrium and started turning on and off
Gorgeous data
How much does it annoy you that your temperature sensor clearly reads in 0.1ยฐC increments then converts those to 0.18ยฐF increments for your display? Scale of 1 to 10 ๐คฃ
It would be cooler if it played a sound clip from Harold and kumar โIโm so high right now man. Weโre not lowโ
YEAH I FIGURED THAT OUT CAUSE IT WAS ROUNDING THE TEMPERATURE WEIRD
the physical display im pretty sure alwayus rpounds down
while HA rounds properly to nearest
so theyre "different"
but if i turn up precision and see the full C converted, the digit always matches
its stupid
There is a built in fail2ban setup via yaml only btw
not as much as my humidifier which reads in full 1C increments and rounds to F
several of my smart devices with their internal temp sensors do that
it suck
Mods faster than I could find the tag to alert them
isnt it great that discord still hasnt fixed that bullshit?
๐
but sure hit me with bullshit captcha nonsense to add a friend or chat with them
We just need a honeypot channel
You can't tell me what to do. You're not my real dad
itโs me ur real dad
delete sun
still kinda bugs me that you can't add a second sun (to get sun position info for a different location).
you have to be on tatooine for that to be enabled
region specific features
Or use the Proxima Centauri integration for a second sun.
the "sun" entity doesn't model the sun. it model's the sun's appearance at a specific location on earth. There are more than one locations on earth.
and yeah, there probably is a hacs integration out there to get sun information for a different location for folks who want that.
when do we get a moon integration
no representation for alternate celestial bodies in this community honestly
oh wait that exists ๐ญ
i genuinely cant think of when that would be useful in an automation but i love it anyway
death star integration when
actually that'd be a nigtmare to integrate cause they keep blowing up
you'd have to update the code every time they built a new one
Werewolf defence automations at new full moon.
wake everyone in the house, set all lights to red, and trip the alarm whenever its a full moon
There are more than one locations on earth.
