you must be living in Greece? 🙂

My partner’s Apple Watch battery swelled to the point it popped the screen off
The repair warehouse accused him of intentionally ripping it off and the battery wasn’t swollen.
The battery looked like a bean bag.
I had to spend hours on the phone to get someone to look at the photos and approve the replacement under warranty.
So I have an automation that downloads a PDF of the school lunch menu to "/downloads". I want to send it on to LLM to spit back a clean interperetation, but I can't figure out how to get another automation to access that directory. Anyone have a clue?
@round crystal I totally get that you are upset. But a little less use of "fuck" would be nice.
if someone could automate somethng to get rid of my gnats that would be great
it feels like I am on schiphol airport
As always, the answer is lasers (sharks optional)

I just installed my first Ikea Matter bulb to add to all 256 other devices
wow what a pain in the rear
lol wtf... apparently the Unifi Device Bridge doesn't support setting the untagged VLAN on the port. Looks like it's going back to Microcenter
thankfully I'm a short bike ride away
took me a solid 22 minutes to find this out btw;
In the companion app.
Settings → companion app → troubleshooting → sync thread credentials.
Device bridge?
if you say so 😄
my hass with the skyconnect is the openthreadgivesyouborderlinerouter
Look two messages further up from yours
basically lets you connect a wired device via Wi-Fi. I was going to use it to replace some powerline ethernet adapters, but that appears to not be happening lol
I just have a wifi on my appliances vlan...
Not sure if tp-link even has a solution that transfers all clans over wifi though
problem is you don't connect the device bridge via an SSID, so I can't handle it that way
Bäh
Yea, my device bridge equivalent is a super dumb AP
to be fair, the powerline setup is working fine, but I wanted to try this
100 USD device, and you can't specify the VLAN
would have been perfect since it supports PoE output

Poe injector and WiFi access point in one does sound nifty
Ah, is it one of those annoying things that just gets dumped into whatever the untagged VLAN is on the AP side?
The cheaper of the in-wall access points might be an answer to this
https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/all-wifi/products/u7-iw
Slightly more awkward to power it because you need PoE input, but I'm 99% sure you can wirelessly bridge these and then do useful things with VLANs on the two bottom ports
Then you'll just need a double ended PoE injector
Yep. Insane
isn't powerline still limited to 1g?
They sell a version called "2000" but since every device I've seen supporting that has 1Gb Ethernet ports, functionally yes
I wonder how much more reliable or fast it is than modern Wifi
wifi is still less stable
The real-world speed can be pretty dismal too, I tried some of those once. One house they managed 350Mbps in the same room, or 150 in an adjacent room but unusable packet loss. Current house tried them between the house and garage (about 40m), got 14Mbps (but completely stable). Probably that'd be enough for one security camera, if I wanted it
that's the switch with a built in AP right?
My experience with Insteon, which uses a powerline protocol focused on zero-crossing, is that it's not great
depends on if the two units are on the same line.
better than X10, but I still needed an array of filters for a bunch of devices around the house
i see powerline, i cri
thought that was the post office
cool in theory, but meh in practice IMO
Kind of? It can't be used as an AP. It basically just lets you connect a wired device via WiFi
yeah i clicked your link afterwards i forgot that existed
it's been zero days since usps pissed me off
"not" is the answer lol
I would think investing in Wifi 6e @ 6GHz would be better in the long run
But I've successfully used it for some things as a last resort
6ghz has to be like same room tho
shouldn't probably have those lead walls removed rather than finding ways around them
It was reliable for 4 camera streams, although that was only 4 Mbps max
one of the reasons that I haven't bothered with it. But in a crowded city, might be more reliable
seems like it also means that you're less likely to get interference from neighbors
I'll just continue to be a menace with all of the RF noise it creates
I've been tempted to go with 6 GHz, but I haven't really had issues with 5 GHz (or 2.4, for that matter) even in crowded environments
This is always fun to see though
Oops! All interference
Man, people on the HA issue tracker are more annoying than paying customers at work
they need to get fixin' rather than complain'
"apps" still causing chaos?
well, yea. Both the ones I engaged with over the last weeks are fixed but not released
but release cycles apparently are mystic knowledge
FREEEEEE
If you want we can pretend to be paying customers and annoy you
Frick.
Also whoever said I should move to Proxmox
I’m doing it.
Wish me luck.
Those are fighting words. How dare you hate that wonderful word.
This is all of my 2.4 GHz channels, all of them
I don’t even live in particularly dense housing and I live on a corner in front of an alley so I only have one true neighbor
That reminds me I kinda want to explore lowering the 6 GHz width a notch
Welp, my adventure in app creation has ended, because someone else already had done an ArchiSteamFarm app. Just got it up and running.

To anyone wondering how it's going with proxmox
My install broke
Just by existing.
To anyone wondering how it's going with the basic recommended HAOS installation: Everything's peachy.
People keep telling me to virtualize it
reinstalled proxmox just now. Built in web shell is broken still.
but
I got HAOS installed into a VM
🥳
I'll fix the shell thing later
it's something with hostsnames
and console is broken.
what
why is proxmox like this
Well. Back to Ubuntu server minimal install for me.
I love Ubuntu server and docker.
lol you shouldn't listen to people and just stick with stuff you know and are comfortable with
People suck sometimes
HAOS behaves.. poorly unless fully virtualized on proxmox. 🤷♂️
Yes.
I refuse to believe this
People say it’s rock solid
that person is one of the one's you should never listen too
@tidal bronze got your beer jacket ready? https://youtube.com/shorts/_njZRdRiIdM?si=OXMyP_Koq1LO67tB
there's probably some way to configure it to work on the other option but I just threw in the towel last time I tried. 🤷♂️
Beer is for fried shrimp batter, if that.
I want to actually buy a HA Green
Ty for the advice and making me feel valid
not stupid
And I found a bug in Ubuntu server.
It crashes when trying to erase corrupt LVM volumes.
🙃
yo anyone having trouble with YouTube here?
no, I don't live there
Good news noone! Belkin's cloud support is dead, I can't tell the difference.
Good news everybody
I got Ubuntu Server minimal installed again
god i love ubuntu
What'd yu do to it? 😛
I just replaced CentOS 7 with ubuntu
nice!
How is it making the jump from RPMs to apt?
Don't forget to apt remove --purge snap*
My HA is running on bare metal. I have a 3rd party jellyfin addon installed, and yes, it does use my igpu for hardware transcoding. 🙂 My NAS is running truenas (halfmoon nightly) on bare metal, and all my other services are running in the Apps (some are custom docker-compose apps, others are just from their "app store") and there are NO virtual machines to be found.
It's like wiping your but after taking a crap
nice!
TrueNAS here too! Best appliance OS there is
I've never experienced a bug.
TrueNAS is what everyone should strive to be.
and why am I running a nightly release? because I installed FreeBSD originally, and after 15 released I upgraded my pool.. but TrueNAS's latest release was too old for that. 😛
how was freebsd?
Nah. The only reason I am running SCALE is because FreeBSD's NFS is horribly slow, and no amount of tuning that I've found can fix it.
I haven't touched BSD's since I was like, 12
Other than that, I'd use freebsd on EVERYTHING if I could. hence my tag.
I have NOT been happy with truenas scale, but I'm trying to like it....
how come?
I just installed TrueNAS SCALE a couple weeks ago.
I may be able to help :>
I'm enjoying it.
maybe it's because it's a nightly, but there are bugs GALORE. couldn't run the "Check for Updates" because it fails. Try to submit a bug report that failure? That fails too.
oh god, yea, never run nightly TrueNAS
I'm scared enough of release....
I have to if I want to use my existing pool :/
freebsd 15's zfs is 2.4 truenas's is 2.3 :/
It's fine. I use debian a lot on other systems...this was just my last "legacy" server that I needed to fix up
ouch.
congrats on getting it updated
Could be worse. I nuked my entire ZFS pool going from FreeNAS 11 to TrueNAS SCALE
switching to ubuntu from other distros can be.... messy...
25 TB gone.
ouch
My ISP probably hated my ass...2 full weeks of line rating to restore.
Eventually some dev will care enough to remove the hardcoded r/wsize limits and allow async mounts in the FreeBSD nfsd....
But when you have 20 TB of media to serve and scan over NFS it gets real painful. real fast. 😛
new dashboard?
I was on a very old version of HA apparently
Ahhh
I need to get better at making dashes
Mine are...functional...but nothing special.
It may be time to start sourcing some bigger spinners, and I should see if I can wedge an sfp+ into the M700 Tiny running my HA setup... 😛
It doesn't help having over 100 IOT devices.
You have as much space in yours as I do in a 24 bay 4U box....
Mine you, mine is old and is mostly 2 TB drives.
I have DDR3 as well
I was planning an upgrade, but then the ram market went nuclear.....
E5530? Oof. 🙁 Mine is an E3-1275v3
Oh yeah, absolutely. Unfortunately my work is a government, so by the time they actually decide to get rid of stuff, it's 20 to 30 years old!
I do think I could run a few more containers...
I think all the spinners have been pre-purchased until the heat death of the universe to store the AI slop we didn’t ask for
you're fine as long as you're not this guy. /s https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/05/fios-customer-discovers-the-limits-of-unlimited-data-77-tb-in-month/
There's a pair of old TerraPower nas-stations in our office that arent hooked up. But they can't be recycled or tossed... they have 5 500G drives each.....
Dear god that's like a SuperMicro X6 up there. Mine are X8s, they're old, but not 2007 old
Here’s what’s in houkouonchi’s personal data center, from top to bottom:
A 1u server acting as router and VPN server with 4 1.5TB disks.
A 1u testing server with two 1.5TB disks.
A 2u server—formerly a “colo box”—with eight 750GB disks
A 4u Solaris/ZFS backup machine with 24 1TB disks
Another 4u server—houkouonchi’s main server with 24 2TB disks and two 3u storage expansion units, each with 15 3TB disks.
A 2u “Windows/miscellaneous” server with eight 1TB disks
Two 2u uninterruptible power supplies
Another 4u Solaris/ZFS server for backups with 24 1TB disks
Actually less storage than you'd think
I plan on grabbing another, prob a dual E5-2600v4 with onboard SAS. I have the specific model number written down here somewhere...
yeah.. i am moving my old media server away from ancient xeons shit
to a modern intel mobile chipset on a weird chinese board with a sAS card.
i want power efficiency now (and moving from dual xeon to weird intel mobile.. I'm actually not losing cores because of how far apart the different gens are..)
I'd probably save $25-30/mo on power if I went more efficient
also will be gaining a virtualizable intel igpu
so.. i can drop the tesla transcoding card too
so that'll be another hilarious chunk of power going away.
Oh I've got GTX cards in my servers
Must be nice. I can get mediacom 2G here, but my last experience with mediacom at this location was HORRIBLE. Like, daily service loss for hours, and it's either fine when the tech arrives, or it's a maintenance issue.. and I know exactly what the issue is. The plant is stretched WAY past it's initial build point, and a LOT more homes have gone up in the areas driven by this particular node.. and on my particular street they have to overdrive the amps and line extenders just to have signal reach the end of the line with all the new taps they added along the way for the new houses....
Cox does 2G, but my router taps out at 1G
just do what this gigachad did.
https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2022/08/man-who-built-isp-instead-of-paying-comcast-50k-expands-to-hundreds-of-homes/
So when it's cool on winter nights and evenings, the amps are overdriven to the point of distortion causing signal loss. Until the service guy comes out and eases them down a hair. and then it's fine until it starts to get hotter during the summer days now there's not enough power for us and they gotta turn em back up. There's supposed to be an AGC (automatic gain control) that handles that.. But it takes power to run, and with them installed, they cant crank the gain up enough to make it work in the summer....
@unborn merlin If I won the lottery, I'd absolutely pay the local fiber utility to run line to me. Problem is, they don't do residential service and they are -expensive- and are who actually owns the fiber that all the other utilities use in this area, even AT&T has them run some line sometimes... They used to be called Southern Light, but I think they're Uniti Fiber now.
I'm in semi-rural alabama. It's only semi-rural, because along the coast, even the unincorporated areas still have population densities rivaling small towns in some places..
I'm in metro Phoenix and I cannot get fiber either 🙂
beer is for many things.. it's good like that
What I find hilarious about that is, the pure lunacy of people who move to this area and go "I'm moving to the country!" no, Linda, just because there's a farm on the other side of the road with 20 acres and couple dozen horses and cows does NOT MAKE THIS A FREAKING RANCH.
That sounds like a ranch to me
Also..my mother lives on 200+ acres in the middle of Kansas and has fiber internet...go figure.
https://www.google.com/maps/@30.5533861,-88.2586139,35621m/ <- take a look there.. tell me if you see any really isolated areas. lol
Mobeeeelll
Yep. The original capital of the Lousiana territories, and where the US's Mardi Gras began. Which is today. WHich is why I got a nice 4 day weekend this weekend! 🙂
Amtrak has 2 trains that run between Mobile and New Orleans daily. They call that line "The Mardi Gras" line. 😛
One leaves NO at about the same time the other leaves Mobile, then they go home that evening.
It's not a commute run, it's a 4 hour train ride, but you could do the drive in 2.
It's got multiple stops along the way in each direction. The point is for people to easily spend the weekend in one or the other without needing to drive.
It's only been reopened a few months now. It was closed for katrina, and they never reopened it until now. In fact, it's been so long that there's been a rash of vehicle/amtrak collisions because people are used to seeing only the slow 40mph cargo trains, and when that 72mph sucker comes flying they're still running the guards..
thats just cleaning out the stupid from humanity a bit
I agree, but right after they started running there were a LOT of people demanding that amtrak do something.. Like it was their fault or something.
There were a lot of "the train is there before the arms are down!" until security camera footage from nearby stores started popping up of the collisions.... where the arms were down before the vehicle went around them....
amazingly, since those videos were shared a few hundred times, I've not seen any more real public complaints about that. 😛
In other news, I decided to see just how much I could get that old server to push out over it's 10Gbe DAC connection... And every other Linux machine in the house is pulling gigabit speed off it. Which is only 3Gbe total out, but she's handling that with no issue. Even with spinning rust. 😍
Each instance of rsync is only using half of a core (half a thread, actually, it's a 4 core/8 thread CPU, and each rsync is showing about 50% CPU usage... And yet the entire system is showing like 35% CPU total lol)
Are you counting time in-kernel the same for those metrics?
I managed to get 10 gigabit out to every room in my house and all the routers
But I still need some small 10 gig switches to split it out in a few rooms
Not as expensive as I thought, though it seems there's a lot of ones with 2.5G which I gather is a bit of a bodge standard
Yea I think 2.5G only became popular due to wifi speeds in the 1.8G area
I hope she thinks it's funny by the time I get home.... 💀🤡
I made a new account on Stoat for when Discord decides to drop the hammer on age certification. I hope to see you all there soon!

Ok my home automation task for today is to use the RGB on my innovelli switch in my room to light up green when I need to water my rubber plant every 12 days and dismiss when I press the config button
If I want to use this for multiple things I guess I should create some sort of stack 🤔

And for today's existential dread moment. Imagine if the radio signals we started sending out about 100 years ago were picked up by an alien civilization about 50 light years away. They translated and responded. We'd be getting the response now. Imagine if the response is "BE QUIET YOU FOOLS!" ....
don't worry, AI will have turned us all into paperclips by the time they get here
I, for one, will wholeheartedly embrace my role of holding papers together
I finally caught that episode on TV a few days ago
I guess that's a question for #1284966540617449515 , albeit a weird one
This is the really cool part, there is no way we are alone, but do "the others" want to talk, how far away are they, are they sending us stuff we are too stupid ro pick up (remember when the EM spectrum way everything we could touch, smell, see and hear?)
Fascinating stuff
The current curl version is compiled without IPP.
Don't ask the Canadian team, they don't curl properly
ok, so #1284966540617449515
Thanks!
I don't wget it
Man, I really did not expect the amount of intrigue and controversy around the curling competition
it seems like it started with a lot of norms and "gentleman's rules" so to speak and is now begging for a micromanaged rule book
I am not really a sports buff, but do quite like F1
I wonder if you can nudge another car with your finger
or maybe you can if it's the body, but not the wheels?
latest "scandal" there is that the compression ratio of the engines are measured at a set temperature, so at least 1 team (probably Mercedes) have apparently worked around it by using thermal expansion (apparently) to allow more than the rule allows
what if you use one of those big foam fingers?
and the teams that didn't think of it are bitching
In this case I believe there was a rule that you were not allowed to touch the stone after you let go.
the rules are getting changed for that
almost too much..
keeps it interesting, seems like the racing may well be shit, we might need the drama
what I learned from all the back-and-forth rule book quoting is that the rules aren't as cut-and-dried as any other the posters were making them out to be
it's amusing, and a bit refreshing, that the officials came out with not just one, but two (or even more), statements referencing and clarifying teh rules and how they'll be enforced
from u2 you mean?
you don't cross Big Curling
if you find yourself actually paying attention to curling than you know it's past due for you to go outside and live alittle
I've recorded all the matches to see if I can get into it
uh
Consuela knows sweeping, that's for sure
Wolfdog Skiing is the new trend
There have been a few wildlife incursions. There was one with a squirrel in the downhill slalom skiing too. Almost got trampeled
It would suck to crash and tumble down the mountain because you ran over a squirrel
Raccoons are too smart for that
Unfortunately a kangaroo got pulverised at the Bathurst 12H too 🙁
I would never tumble down a mountain because I ran into it whilst skiing
Never look into WRC animal crashes
Mainly because I can't ski

I've had to run around at work today changing mag-tape backups. I'd appreciate a robot doing that lol
Is that Glacier works in the background? 🙂
YeahI saw a reel for this earlier on ig.
We abandoned LTO tape several years ago because our backup jobs because they were bottlenecking our backups. Has the speed improved with the latest LTO standard? Have not looked at them since we abandoned the platform.
It has stagnated a bit, but can parallelise the shit out of it 😄
Our big tape robot at work has 24 LTO9 drives, and cumulative write speed can be >5GB/s
It sure has, tape is still alive strangely
Theoretically 400MB/s per drive, but honestly keeping that amount of data flowing takes quite the considerable set of supporting hardware
It does. That was the issue we were looking at. In order to get past the bottle necks, we'd have to add more tape drives. The drives that were compatible with the solution we had (an Oracle brand solution), it was going to be stupid expensive. We ended up buying a new SANs system from NetApp for a fraction of the cost.
Like 1 of you running around, apparently
Do you count as supporting hardware?
I don't know if I'm supportive enough to count as supporting hardware.

Last claim I've had was when a tree fell on our SUV 15 years ago
I got passed by a pickup truck once on the highway late at night. Blew past me like I was standing still. He merged over in front of me and the canopy on his truck flew off. I got really lucky because it barely touched my car, I had a small dent on the passenger front of the hood and one just above the driver side A piller.
Lucky, I have a 8" dent in the fender, and a lot of missing paint, along with a crease on the passanger door
I thought for sure that thing was going to come through my windshied.

Amazing that is all you came out with for a flying couch.
if you are referring to the diet comment i am not sure unless you removed your emission stuff lol
thought you said one time your truck was diesel and I know that emission shit gets tossed pretty quick

So, I have an old Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 lying around. I'm interested in turning them into IP cameras, ideally skipping Android altogether, but I've found surprisingly little that would work for these old devices. Does anyone know any resources about this? Or have other cool ideas for things to do with such old devices?
there was or still an android app called ip cam that basically turned the camera of old cell phones into ip cameras but the hardware of the phone was never meant to run 24/7 like that. while the devices would work for a bit, maybe even weeks but all in all it is a shit use for the device. best to turn them into one of those buy your old phone kiosk or sites etc

Yeah, I read that the battery could overheat if you left it plugged in all the time.
I'm sad to see it go, though.
Maybe there's something cool with HA that I could do with it? Over-powerful room controller, maybe?

The performance tells the story of a father who keeps waiting — holding on to hope, love, and memories of a child who has been gone for far too long.

something may be wrong with my home assistant websocket config
(also to be clear im not asking for support, right now anyways, im just sorta "live tweeting" this)
@tidal bronze think it can handle the barn? https://youtu.be/DHm5I2VWocg?si=NsEjIMRuNCwVpLbx

am i imagining or did there used to be a help button that took you directly to the docs
nah like
each condition and action had a help or more info button, that ? mark, but you press it and here for example itd take me to the numeric state docs
i swear that was a thing
@lone dagger , I just ordered the socks on the new merch store! How about flipflops and socks as a combination, that's fashion right?
socks?

Open Home socks. Those with ventilation holes.
wtf lol
Haha, that was quick!
Was it you who asked for this in one of the dev channels? 🤣
That'd be me, yes
Just didn't want to spam and bore people there
i wanna know who all bought this https://store.openhomefoundation.org/shop/p/trucker-cap-open-home-foundation
Retro vibes for forward-thinking tinkerers – show the world you like your hardware open and the future sustainable. Core build: Five-panel trucker cap with padded front, backed with a full cotton lining for comfort, and mesh rear panels for breathability. Source integrity: Made from GRS-ce
Hahahahah
It's okay, you made Sonoma pay attention to something for once.
Gonna make an "unimportant" custom merch for you, Sonoma.
at least a single sticker in the pack
powered by sonomassistant
I'm telling you, flipflops and the HA logo it: big cash cow there. There's a large market for it.
when real "programming socks"?
Socks with only YAML on it.
If you get the YAML wrong, it will not be a sock but a scarf.
Like in websocket?
that socks
like a coccoon, a raccoon will come out
OK, I probaly should go back to the dev dungeons now. Not sure how I escaped anyway.
The document investigates the impact of Programming Socks, particularly thigh-highs, on software engineers' productivity and job satisfaction. It highlights the popularity of striped socks and discusses their perceived effectiveness in promoting clean coding practices. The paper also touches on related quirky items in programming culture, such a...
oh no.
so what happens when the socks don't pass the config check
I just added these and the sock mentions in here to the list of requested items.
Haha, I wonder how this will evolve 😄
We shall see.
so... can anyone explain the logic behind removing the ability to set default dashboards for each device a user uses?
I can't figure it out, this is driving me insane. I also can't figure out an actual replacement that works and isn't "make a new account for each device," because that defeats the whole point of the very concept of an "account"
You know what bugs me, people recommend proxmox or another hypervisor to run HAOS to people who have no business running them, and then they come onto support forums asking for help, its unfortunate because a lot of times people are just over the their heads
I feel the same about people running containers and then complaining they can't get the containers to work or even communicate with each other
this happened just the other day
Whats "this"
some infinite dumbass talking someone to try and run HA in proxmox when the person had no business diving into something they never messed with before
My friends Copilot just went down a rabbit hole creating a 12 line template. What he really wanted was
"+ timedelta(hours=8)).strftime('%H:%M')"

where is tediore's melted HA sticker?
I migrated haos from rpi4 to proxmox with the intention of installing something… eventually
Eventually will come at some point maybe but realistically I might just nuke it and run haos bare metal again
I had considered this but to only replace my pi3 in the barn with the pi4
curious if i can get the pi4 to super bare bones run frigate
Yah the pi4 got turned into pikvm for a desktop that I don’t have plugged in anymore
2gb? model I understand.. anything 4 and over.. wtf is wrong with you? lol
It’s what I had on hand, and that’s when basic pis were 100+ so it would have doubled the cost
Very much a “get it done now” situation
I had been waiting for one of several “coming soon” esp-ish ATX controllers that still haven’t materialized
So it was the best option compared to one of the questionably secure kvms that had come out. Jetkvm wasn’t shipping to US at that point
Finally you are heading in the right direction. Well done amigo, well done!
you should put ice on that head injury
@forest edge
poor mr roger
ok so wyoming_openai does NOT support STT streaming god DAMMIT
Oh wow!
i was told to use speaches and wyoming_openai but grgrg
isn't ai dead yet
AI was dead on arrival. Some people are just still clinging.
Question why has HA not taken off with non tech people as even basic tech literacy I feel like you can use HA now
"ai" as a broad field is never going to die
LLMs are a bit silly for most applications
but are almost dead
but not yet
but like machine learning fucking speech to text is what i want
not llm
I think it is really making progress from a UI prospective to be more friendly to the "Normies" (for want of a better word). But getting started is probably still a pain point. Whilst yes the Green is great for this any other setup is too much for people.
Yes fair I was only thinking about a UI perspective totally forgot about getting started . But would loved to encourage non tech people to have a go
Have you met people?
🙂
I've discovered a side dad-joke-style benefit of my using a CB-related name... when people say they're taking a break, I pretend to be excited to go.
"Where are ya taking me? I can't wait! is it a surprise?!" lmao
@tidal bronzeI hear you all are getting a sprinkle
was steady rain here for much of the day
im losing my mind tracing this bug
so it Seems that
wyoming_openai sends speach a normal transcription request, asking to stream the output back
speaches, somewhere along the way, somehow forgets that it is streaming, and sends back the params of a non-streaming request
and this breaks everything
pro tip: you can use helper entities to make it look like you have a button for anything you want
though for some reason the nuke icon is included, i didnt have to do that
This would be for #1284966915055288530
Too much. Maybe time to buy an umbrella wonder if costco sells them.
maybe. i wouldn't put it past some of you trying to use them as an ocean scoop
Phew
do you just not leave your home at night when those temps drop? lol
I refused to install the Reolink app just to set up my doorbell so I instead went down the rabbit hole of learning how Baichuan works, then how the web interface uses client-side AES to encrypt the JSON being sent to the API, all to figure out how to set a password: https://gist.github.com/timkent/0663418f639f388fae04a719bf7a4bb5
Enable https on Reolink doorbell using https://github.com/starkillerOG/reolink_aio library - reolink_enable_https.py
Only in bundles of 50
We got hail here, briefly
I THINK I FIGURED OUT THE ISSUE????
so running fucking whisper in speaches, it defaults to float16 which my gpu doesnt support, and evne if i specify int8, it also does float16 in intermiedate steps
so i had to either specify float32 or int8_float32
guh
GUHH
The second part was an unsolved problem lots of people had hit, it's a bug in the web interface that doesn't allow you to set a password if the old password is blank, but the API accepts it
I just realised I’m getting married on Sep 17 same day as home assistants birthday, what are the chances of that

You can always buy two packs
whoa it's brisk out there this morning
isn't 37F a state of emergency for california?
Did I forget something? Upselling at another level 😆
Can someone translate that native symbols to international format?
Counterpoint, do you trust your fellow CA drivers in such conditions?
I don’t trust them in any conditions
It translates to “long sleeves, but it’s a sunny winter so don’t complain”
Oh here it is everything penetrating cold most of the time. 🥶
A socal winter coat is a fleece pullover
Translate? But why?
To late its long sleeve weather
An odd looking raccoon you got there
MIddle earth raccoons
Almost 60? That's cooked alive weather
Then my information was false
You can also be cooked alive with long sleeves.
Perhaps it helps against sun burn
Wasn't farheith a real 0 + 30 something. And then 1.something from a real 1-100 scale?
It’s %hot. 57F is 57% hot
What is the conversion to %cold?
I want input on an idea
I’m thinking of labeling my stuff with NFC sticker tags
This way I can tap it to identity it when I do eventually move
That’s not stupid. Right?
What is the goal?
To know where stuff is packed?
so you would need a device to see what is in a box?
be faster to open the damn box!
A permanent marker can do that easier.
If you want it fancy try homebox
Can create QR codes you can stick on stuff
We use it at work behind our bosses back to keep inventory of our cables etc. Lol
Yes, this is what I would do, if you wanted to use NFC tags though, that would be very cool
diving down another "reading the code" rabbit hole because i want to limit ollama to 2gb vram
it HAS the logic to dynamically calculate how much of the model to put in the gpu based on vram, but it wont let you do that with any value that isnt the gpu max, or dynamically reducing free amount
any of y'all residential electricians? trying to figure out something that has no real practical impact but is something i'm just itching to know now
No, but you're gonna want to start with which country's electrical system you're about to ask a question about
in this breaker panel, i just kind of instinctively labeled the circuits on the left bus bar as "phase A" and the circuits on the right bus bar "phase B". those top two are phase B, next two phase A, and so on
I was getting really confused when the sum of the phase A circuits was adding up to the measured phase B current rather than tha phase A current, and after going out there and poking around with a multimeter (i know not a good idea) i found out that the main breaker was flipping the cords. the left cord powers the right bus bar and the right cord powers the left bus bar
north america/usa sorry
i actually could have figured out the breaker flip thing by just reading the panel though:
the thing i'm curious about now is labeling each phase. Is there a practical difference between phase A and phase B? other than 240 volts of course
like, me having arbitrarily labeled the left bus bar as phase A, would someone sufficiently knowledgeable be able to examine the breaker box and say "no actually that's phase B"
or is it just a kind of relative thing and you do just arbitrarily choose one
I know there's some timing stuff with 3-phase but I don't know how much that really plays into residential stuff like this, if at all
and like i said, now that i've figured out why my measurements were weird this has no practical purpose i'm just curious now
(and yes that image is not the permanent solution, i'm planning on putting a dedicated low voltage box to the side and running the ct clamp wires into it to reduce the risk of anything catastrophic happening)
So you're gonna get what is my admittedly spotty understanding of US electricity, but I thought it went like this:
A B
B A
A B
B A
Which is how those double-wide 240V breakers get both phases, if the whole left was A and whole right was B then adjacent breakers would have 0V between them.
no i'm not saying the whole of left is A and the whole of right is B, i'm saying the left bus bar is A and the right bus bar is B. the bus bars alternate per row so it's:
A A
B B
A A
B B
Same thing
ye what i mean is that's how the tandem breaker gets 240
it's on tabs from both bus bars and getting A and B
The only real residential standard I've seen so far regarding the specifics of which one is A vs which one is B is 1,2 is A, 3,4 is B, 5,6 is A, etc.
Ugly tho
i think i'm gonna get another vue 3 and do 9 on one and 9 on the other. i'm not a huge fan of the hack required for the 240v circuits and how it's represented
Just realized the eve smart plugs don’t have a manual button
That’s a bit of a disappointment
They seem nice so far. And they’re improving my dogshit thread network
So that’s good.
Ok so they pair insanely fast.
So far so good. Questioning if they’re worth $60 each vs Philips hue with the pro hub / third reality with the matter bridge.
They’re definitely louder than Thirdreality
i have an idea for how to handle this without buying a new device:
I'll create a "virtual" ct clamp and when the dryer circuit is over some reasonable threshold, say 10 watts, its template reading will be the opposite phase total power minus each individual real circuits power
and since i have two 240v circuits, if i ensure their single CT clamps are on different phases from each other I should be able to get a pretty reasonable estimate of the other phase load for the specific circuit using that logic
it works:
it acts a bit weird with the AC though, need to figure out what's going on there
lol i'm an idiot, left in some semicolons when i was copying things and subtracting all the individual circuits
This would all be great in #1284966203026182206
oh sorry
derp.... I forgot to give rootless gitlab CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE
Hey, I'm new here 👋 Which is the best channel to post general questions to?
Look through #find-support and post in the appropriate place
I dream of the day
the day
HomeAssistant can be a matter bridge
for all devices
I dream of the day I find a cheap (per-node) device I can use for reliable mixed mesh (WiFi and Ethernet backbones depending on node) with an open firmware and proper ipv6 support. So far the options for that seem to be:
Matter is kinda SOL until I have working ipv6, and ipv6 makes my Orbi shit the bed.
Tempted to just pay Microtik out the ass and run fiber optic backbones between nodes, then not touch it for 30 years or so.
So, orbi logo drawn in crayon?
you want my public ip address earlier no?
ok, so updates break alarmo now?
Constructive comments in #1284966582375813201 are welcome
its not a constructive comment
its a literal question
i just installed it 😭
i updated HA and suddently the alarm panel says "this device is no longer provided by alarmo" so basically idk if i broke it or the update did

Not anymore. We fought them to the death, with our army of attack raccoons.
I would rather you had not done that
Am I doing this right?
10/10 for creativity, certainly
wow I hate how timers work
Use stopwatches. They work the opposite way.
Have you tried feeding them spinich?
Wai till you try traveling at super luminal speeds relative to your timer's reference frame. Ridiculous results. Whoever designed this universe needs to be shot with a ball of their own excrement.

Is there any alternative for HA cloud to not be through Amazon AWA

Anyone know where i can get a firmware update for HASPOne plate ? I changed my router, and now it's not connecting to wifi anymore.
WELP. I didn't read the fine print, got a Reolink battery doorbell instead of PoE because I wanted it to work with my existing mechanical chime. Now it doesn't work with HA or Frigate. I guess the Ring has to go back up. 🙁
Anyone else keep running into dumb footguns with this stuff?
none of the reolink ones are just simple plug and play with mechanical chimes but there are ways to make them work
you can at least buy rf relays and pair them somewhat easily
I'm starting to think that what I actually want is a dumb doorbell and a camera.
would depend on your backend system. dumb cameras work good if you have a backend system like Frigate or an NVR with object detection. if you don't have that then you want that baked into the camera
nothing more annoying then just motion detection on cameras and leaf blows by
I'm using Frigate already with some Tapo indoor cameras. They're wifi, but they work alright.
Please take this discussion to a support channel.
its already over
Is there a different HA discord that is more relaxed on this?
I use HA less because I have no social space for small questions, complaints and just kind of newbie experience sharing
This forum-only thing is really weird, not sure I've seen it anywhere else, if people wanted forums they'd go to the forums
yea no
🙁
as long as it's not support you are fine. you can make complaints in here as long as you don't expect a response or anything
Don't go gaming the system by making a statement (rather than asking a question) about a problem in the hope that someone will provide feedback - but when you are called out on it replying "I don't want support, it was just an observation". It's very obviously not the case.
Go to one of the relevant channels in the support section and start a discussion topic.
I don't think it would be fine
I do.
@tidal bronze screw you and your tiktok crap! stop supporting that platform! I shouldn't have to watch tiktok tool review videos lmao
Someone's going to end up judging whether I hoped for a response, doesn't sound like a great plan. anyway that's not the issue for me
There are plenty of other places that may fit your needs better. Have you tried Reddit, Facebook or the Discourse Forums?
Your answer to someone not liking forums is more forums
they kind of got you there lol
I'll check again in like 6 months or so
Discord may not even be a thing for Home Assistant after 6 months the way they are going with their "gamer" focussed policies.
speaking of which.. we all moving to the matrix?
Question
Since a lot of you are a lot older than me
And have a lot more experience owning a home
We bought this condo. Everything looked normal. We found out the old owner redid the drywall with thicker drywall much thicker.
So the electrical boxes are set back 1/4” back.
I can use electrical box extenders or whatever they’re called to fix this right?
you would have to check canadian code but in the US the answer is yes
He used wire wound up and extra long screws to space it correctly so they look flush. But now when we change them with something new, the new item doesn’t sit perfectly level. Usually at an angle now as it clings to the tiny bit of drywall it can hit
Oh thank god.
Afsik, they’re legal here. Home Depot sells a metal one but I’m gonna get plastic ones from amazon
Thanks you so much for confirming.
Ok stupid question now. Will a smart switch fit in one of them?
They all seem to get smaller towards the back
you should ALWAYS still check your local code for the peace of mind when you go to sell
Yes.
I don't know how all that works in moose land but here it's possible for stuff to be perfectly legal in some cities/counties/states but not in others and when it comes time to sell if it's not code approved then it becomes a mess you have to deal with
Ty. And uh. We just ignore it violating code lmfao.
Not legal. But flipping market is like that sadly.
stuff like that is a pretty safe bet
those extenders generally can only cover like an inch
i got my new smart lights in the mail for outside
but i dont want to put on pants to go screw them in
Which brand? Hue?
@forest edge I wanna share this with someone because it’s exciting as hell
My hue bulbs all finally updated their firmware during the night and I got motion aware features enabled
And wow that’s magical
No sensors. Just bulbs.
It detected a fan moving in our bedroom.
It’s insane how sensitive it can be
The hue hub pro was worth the money
I have it setup for matter for Google home and Apple home. Philips hue api for HA
So multi admin, and new smart aware features
Hue just keeps winning.
not a hue fan so the wrong person to tag for that
not to mention we frown on hub buyers around these parts
Is there a HA integration for the dirigera hub?
there is noway that Lord of the Rings: The hunt for Gollum is real
wiz, hue hasn’t updated their par38 line to the new thread bulbs yet
What are the advantages of matter over zigbee, I’ve just switched my zigbee bulbs for matter and it’s been nothing but a headache.
Can anyone help me? I have connected the HDMI into the raspberry pi, and I still cannot get any chicken soup out? I can't get it to show up within Home Assistant either? Anyone got any ideas?
you have to be connected to the same 2.4 ghz wifi or it wont show up
That's what you get for not using Monster cables
The 2.4GHz signal coming from the microwave is too strong, my laptop won't connect to it
The chicken soup corrodes the cables unless they're gold plated
Also, is it a soup converter that converts HDMI soup to chicken soup, or is it a soup converter that converts HDMI into chicken?
Is the question whether it's an [hdmi] to [chicken soup] converter or [hdmi to chicken] soup converter?
Because the answer is yes
I thought so
Torn between #the-kitchen and #the-media-bar
I think #the-kitchen sounds perfect
Have you tried it with strawberry rhubarb pi instead?
Problem is clearly that you're trying to mix savoury and sweet
Doesn't matter if your Pi is Raspberry, Orange, Banana, none of these things go with chicken soup
Are you saying if I had a chicken pi, it would be able to make chicken soup?
True, we went to a clam chowder cook off yesterday and one of them somehow made it too clammy
Probably stole clams from the place that forgot to thicken the roux
can someone explain why i'm forced to apply states to entities when i am setting up a scene? in "review mode" i can't even add devices

Now see I assumed that "bundle" meant you're getting a better price for buying the three together, but each individual item is on sale and the sum of the prices is identical
(in which case I'd maybe consider the extra $80 to get a 9800x3d instead of a 7800x3d)
Okay I replaced the spotlight par38 bulbs in the front of my house with wiz bulbs
Also I learned they were inside of a spiny rose bush which I had not appreciated when I initially went outside
Took a wiz in the bushes outside your house. Gotcha 👍
I want to connect home assistant on my phone to my home assistant on an RPi but when connected to wifi, it never connects, says Port not reachable, server connection failed, and skipped (previous check failed). I use Proton VPN but everything is connect to my homelab. What am I doing wrong?
fight me.
@forest edge also
ty for the advice yesterday
my outlets sit perfectly
🙏
It was almost a whole year they didn't sit perfect, and I hate to admit
one stuck out
in the kitchen.
because the screws couldn't reach at all.
We just used electral tape over the screws and a outlet splitter (2 -> 6) so we could handle that
I did not expect to find myself in the middle of an electronics project, struggling to find a basic doorbell button we like
me_irl
Also
I ordered pizza and the delivery guy (clown) refuses to deliver saying he got ticketed recently
and how our parking is paid and how there's no spots
we have 21 open spots. 5 dedicated to delivery people with giant signage stating so.
read the reviews on the store, apparently he's getting 3+ tickets every single day!
when can HA automate pizza delivery?
So you're saying the answer is "until recently" 😆
I'm sure someone else was complaining about the loss of that API. Lotta people did some really dumb shit with it
https://registry.terraform.io/providers/MNThomson/dominos/latest/docs
Warnings and Caveats
This is not a joke provider. Or, it kind of is a joke, but even though it's a joke it will still order you a pizza. You are going to get a pizza. You should be careful with this provider, if you don't want a pizza.
I'm so glad I redid my entire HA setup
it's so much more performant.
I blew away my old container today, started 100% fresh.
I plan on never doing that.
lol
for some reason my philips hue sensors were glitchy before
now they're solid. Maybe they got a firmware update while connected to a hue hub?
Could be.
I still have all my hue devices except one bulb hooked up through the hue hub, because I've been too lazy to set up dimmer switch controls manually.
I love using the hub with HA
best of all worlds
It's literally the only hub I'll accept
@atomic delta oh I forgot to say
I bought a bunch of new hue bulbs and new light fixtures
🙂
I considered smart switches, but hue bulbs were just easier
Smart switch is love, smart switch is life
I have four Rodret smart switches
and four / five of the new thread based ones
that aren't as nice to use in HA becuase matter support is hit and miss.
Wall switch with dumb bulb, not remote for smart bulb. Leviton and zooz mostly for me
Easier until you realize how much more expensive they are 😛
The only reason I’d get bulbs is for temperature / RGB (or for things like lamps)
wall switches all the way.
They're like $20
:p
a switch for a bunch of lights is also $20
I decided to give essentials a try
I wish.
and you don’t have to replace each bulb 😛
even Tapo is like, $25
Zooz Zwave ones can be found for $20-25 on sale
😭
I bought not on sale
Not on sale they’re about $30
I'm currently labeling all my zigbee devices like a good boy.
Atleast now you can eventually get a Zigbee switch and bind the bulbs directly to the switch
True
but
I can also just make a bunch of worthless automations for the same task /s
Do you guys not use manual lighting at all?
my problem is people still want a normal light switch
and I didn’t wanna cover up all the switches with those ugly covers and put remotes everywhere
ugh
no
lol
Also I just realized I factory reset my laundry light and never paired it
Also realizing I have a spare RGB bulb I should put there.
Also hue
That's the point of the smart switch
yeah, he’s saying he uses bulbs though
Smart bulbs are interesting if you want color, I guess, and a switch in smart bulb mode would restore regular switch functionality
That reminds me I need to figure out how many more innovelli dimmers I want
I need some for my porch lights
For sure
All the PAR38 spotlight upward facing accent lights I have as smart bulbs so I can set them to colors on holidays
🙂
Unfortunately they’re WiFi but whatever
If hue ever updates their outdoor rated PAR38 with thread bulbs I can switch to that
also on my todo list i need to figure out how to give my home assistant a second ip on an IoT vlan in opnsense to let it straddle
The image reminds me of a logo I've seen somewhere...
https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-is-a-space-to-think
The trust is gone
Is that the new HA logo design?
Or is this the new GraveAssistant™ coming April 1st?
The game of baseball would like a word with all of you

Why is the raccoon sad
but the balloon says get well
Morticians hate this trick.
you just found out lol
@forest edge didk if you saw it, but thank you again 🙏
Also TIL: IKEA matter devices mostly have Zigbee modems.
even IKEA can't quit Zigbee. Zigbee is like crack
Also @hoary canyon I believe you told me about thesmatesthouse
Any other sites like this for weirdos like me with no ideas for home automations
I jsut realized today I can use NFC tags + siri shortcuts to track when I change my air purifier filters
bro I just learned about this today: https://www.thesmartesthouse.com/products/zooz-800-series-z-wave-long-range-dimmer-scene-controller-zen35-800lr?variant=41594421608511
😭 I wish i had a zwave modem
This literally fits what I need perfectly.
ok I'm liking NFC tags
These are neat
I feel like the person who first discovered fire
Why not get one 😛
bro you see I just discovered how cool NFC tags are
Haha
seriously. this is neat
I have one behind my ensuite bathroom switch vanity plate to play my husband's music when he taps
he's so happy
I might make one to tap when we go out to turn everything off instantly
You could probably automate this based on network and location
people say to use it to link user manuals
They're living in the year 3000 while I'm discovering the year 2000
Tempted!
I'm thinking of labeling each bulb with a NFC sticker to say what socket they belong to
Wait till you learn how good of an idea it is to write breaker numbers on the back of switch plates lol. That idea never occurred to me until I saw it online
I'm going to probably label my hue dimmer switches too since we have one on each side of the bed and mix them up 24/7
This is literally the simplest QOL improvement I've ever made
hahah so today my friend helped me map out the breakers
the label below is 99% inaccurate
it also says "lite fixture"
time to put NFC tags on the breakers /s
Have you ever been in a home pre 1980s with like 6 total breakers lol
it’ll have a breaker named bedroom that goes to 3 other bedrooms and the kitchen 🤣
Whenever I see people use NFC tags it feels a bit forced. Like surely there's a better way. But I can also see the attraction to stuff like album covers that play the album etc
I know what you mean, but this is actually proving to be handy
I didn't realize NFC stickers could be something useful instead of stupid
I haven’t played with NFC tags much but now I want to lol
Do it, they're like $10 for 40
How are you using them?
be warned, apparently if you put them over metal and they're not made for that, you won't be able to read them.
I just started personally. Automation for my husband's music in the bathroom
They are very cheap though so worth experimenting with
100% better but I wanted to control Apple Music
Music Assistant if you have compatible speakers
two issues. I'm docker HA, and HomePod Minis
HomePod minis have airplay no?
They're not the most reliable.
I just bought a Sonos sound bar and I'm in heaven
I'm going to probably buy a 2 pack of Sonos 100 whatever speakers from Costco for $549
maybe two
Sonos speakers are really good
Their headphones are ok
I’ve been playing around with HA Voice using the View Assist project. Works good when there isn’t an issue with my LLM 🤣
I haven't bought a new one in years, but we have Sonos things in most of the rooms of the house. Also one of the battery powered ones, to carry down the garden with us
How's it going?
See I want to integrate a LLM with HA but have no idea where to even start
I have a mac mini running LM Studio as a server already, so why not use a small LLM like Phi 3?
Phi 3 is competent enough to control lights
Check out the view assist project. Grab yourself an eBay echo show (2019) and root it
Ask an LLM. Not even joking
but it's an cough echo cough
Well amazingly considering they only advertised about a 3-4 year battery life, the nearly 7 year old Sonos Move still gets 6+ hours of playtime at moderate volume. So I'd say pretty good
There’s a custom ROM / OS out for some of them
you’re just using the hardware
Ok, I'm in good hands!
I want to actually try a Pixel tab as a hub
I have an outdoor AP with a big-ass directional antenna on it so it works a long way from the house too 😄
U7-Outdoor by chance?
or an iPad
If you can run PoE the crestron tablets are super cheap on eBay
Like the iPad not as a hub, but as a thing
Ruckus T350se, L-Com HG2458-10DP antenna.
Running the POE is the issue, also I'd need a POE switch
ah nice
@hoary canyon https://youtu.be/Wkzg8sNkm8Y?t=91 This is how I want to do it
haven’t watched that yet, but I’ve seen it pop up recently
A giant e-ink desktop display mounted to the wall being driven by a pi
It's just nice.
I want my home status display to just vanish
I don’t know how I feel about the Pi part though
if I'm not looking at it, I don't want it to glow
that makes me feel like it’ll be unstable
I feel like it’d be better off with something like Android personally, have heard lots of things and had some experiences with Pis
Also if you watch the video, it seems like he runs HA on a mac
