hmmmm boy(14) wants to learn Linux as his security competition he's part of has a Linux component, thinking MINT, I remember starting on redhat many many many many years ago, saying screw this and ignoring Linux for a few years until I did Ubuntu, don't want him to experience the same thing, ubuntu/debian distro's still seem the easiest to dip your toes in the water, anyone have any thoughts?
Over the last mumble mumble years, I’ve gone through suse, mandrake, gentoo (only 527000 kernel recompiles!), red hat, who knows what else…. And finally stuck with desktop Ubuntu since at least 2009.
Doing the math, I’ve used Ubuntu more than everything else combined
Customer systems I interact with are either rhel/centos or Ubuntu
I've run mainly Ubuntu variants the last 15 years (or longer, forget when ubuntu came out), recently trying Fedora Plasma, liking it so far
fedoras pretty nice, i like to daily drive it on stuff that i want to run newerish versions of things but still be pretty reliable
I'd say Debian and Fedora.
something debian based like ubuntu isnt a bad choice though
If you can handle Debian, you can handle Ubuntu as well. And Fedora is a starting point for the RHEL way.
I’ve done a few 5 or so year stints with gentoo as my main computer
I want to try arch but every time I get the chance I just stick to what I know
Gentoo is xkcd 303 personified
ive done a gentoo install but never really got into it, arch is my version of what you just said there lol, my desktop runs arch and with it being customized for my current network boot setup and lacking time, I just havent switched it to anything else(not that arch is bad at all, its great lol, but i would like to do fedora on my desktop at some point)
Part of the reason I went with Fedora was because its a happy medium between Arch(bleeding edge) and ubuntu varients(not withstanding unstable distros)
on my webservers I run debian, but that has occasionally been annoying over the years when they’re too far removed from a new release and I can’t even compile what I want with in-repo dependencies bc even those are too out of date. But on the whole I prefer the stability
yepppp
i do recent ubuntu releases for my servers aside from my BGP routers, those are straight debian
ahh yah, exactly the reason i like fedora for my work devices and my personal laptop, i want those devices to just work but also not run stuff 2y old lol
gentoo was actually my first time trying linux so I never had a chance to be annoyed by its idiosyncrasies beyond learning linux in the first place
Ahh remjnds me, at some point I want to try to do a LFS install, no idea when I'll ever have time though lol
I actually ran gentoo unstable most of that time
it’s crazy how much work the gentoo unstable community puts into testing packages before the other distributions see them, but mostly big picture “this release doesn’t even compile” sort of stuff
My first experience with Linux I think was Ubuntu 14.04, but I didn't use or understand it too much until a friend got me to seriously try debian in 2018. Started with xfce and quickly was moved to i3. Since using i3. I haven't been able to go back lol
I can't go without some kind of tiling
i've been a big fan of ubuntu for desktop and debian for servers
I used enlightenment for a while and then i3 for ages
are chromebooks still built off of gentoo’s package manager or did they change that
gentoo’s package manager is great, I always miss it when using other stuff
I bought my younger child(10) a flight yoke and pedals as he really wants to be a pilot, I was going to let him cruise along with a 2070, but then there was a sale on a 9070xt hellhound on amazon for 600 with 10% off, after reading all the warnings about graphics cards prices going up because of ram, not sure how i feel about it yet lol
yah i3 is great, only switched off cause i like certain gnome features and also gtk themes to work normal, and what i was using to do that started to get finicky and old, i think gnome-flashback or something. now i daily gnome with pop-shell but im starting to dabble in cosmic
the older I get the less I want to spend time maintaining stuff like I did when I was younger
speaking of, home assistant sounds like a mistake lmao
trying to keep it as simple as possible to reduce maintenance burden
lol i get that, i randomly go into my HA after months and am like, oh that one integration isnt working, and/or oh, im crazy out of date in general
for the most part my stuff just works though, which is nice
I realized one of my outside camera's hadn't been working for 2 week yesterday, thankfully I have coverage from a wide angle camera so it was still doing the automations I wanted, just not as quickly
oh ooops
I use it to turn on lights and check for packages, making me second guess if I even needed it lol
i feel like i could do so much more with my HA automations but dont really, all i really do most of the time is just some simple sunset/sunrise on/off type of stuff
Make it more complicated and use a lux sensor so it turns on during bad weather or earlier on cloudy days
ahhh, that sounds like a good idea actually
just bought a house so im setting up a new HA(current is at my parents), currently i have the outside lights set to turn on at sunset but only when me or my wife are there, that would be a good addition lol
My next automation is going to be starting timelapse's when the weather says it's snowing
oooo
what kind of cameras do you have? i actually didnt know i could link cameras into HA until recently when setting that up, connected some of my unifi protects cameras into it
Right now just reolink camera's
And omg I just realized what is causing my 1 camera to work while its inside and then when it's outside for a short period, its getting cold, and stops working
oh no, check the datasheet and see what it says for temp rating?
its an ourdoor camera...
hmm
ahh thats exactly it
It went poof when it got cold out
Temperature
Operating temperature: -10°C ~ +55°C (14°F ~ 131°F)
Now I'm worried about my other more expensive camera
Grumble
Well.... it was -15F when the camera went poof 😛
hmmmm, that could do it ;)
i mean i would think they natually heat up themselves a bit but maybe thats a bit far from rated lol
im in dallas so the coldest it gets is like -2F
it gets that cold in Dallas?
that’s like a ~50y freeze event (but maybe more common now?)
last time it got that cold was 2021
−10C is probably fine for dallas as long as the failure mode is stops-working and not breaks
Now reading more about the specific camera model, I don't think the cold killed it, many many people use them outside with no issues
I got a japanese super toilet
doesn’t connect to the internet though so I guess it’s a dumb toilet
No, but I tested with multiple POE switches and I also tested using teh same line as my POE doorbell, doorbell worked on either POE line
Is that like the one from Futurama?
prob
Happy Poppy Time to all of you!
Season 6, Episode 3 - Attack of the Killer APP!

@tidal bronze what disgusting thing you making for xmas dinner? I bet it involves cardboard
Crab and lobster
Oh that sounds good, we are doing prime rib
Got it onsale for 6.99 lb from Amazon(wish me luck lol)
amazon meat?
yeah amazon fresh
does that revolver come with all 6 bullets or just 1?
like with a bidet and heated seats and whatnot?
I like Fresh but never bought meat
For 6.99 lb I figure its worth a try
New van 😄
Does it connect to homeassistant?
I guess I could try
a man with his van
the holy trinity
You need some vitals
Tire stats?
API doesn’t expose them
you can get them via rtl_433 and a RTLSDR dongle. That would get the manufacturer, active pressure in kPa, and the serial number.
sure but how would i get them into HA?
i am just using the car API
How to use rtl_433 and an SDR dongle with Home Assistant to integrate devices using 433.92 MHz, 868 MHz (SRD), 315 MHz, 345 MHz, and 915 MHz ISM bands.
Run a AP in the car
the easy way is to use the rtl_433 to MQTT broker, and then HA can read from the broker
i have no clue how you live and stuff. It's a thing I do. Works well.
fair enough
BTW car does not come with hotspot?
I pull power monitoring and TPMS both into my HA
it does
it’s out of wifi range unfortunately
If you have always on Wi-Fi in the car while you're driving it's not a problem
Poorly. Ford radios suck
i hardly check tire pressures tbh
hey i get my tires switched to summers/winters often!
yes, that has nothing to do with tire pressures :P
Often as in every summer and winter? Or more vibes based
i still haven’t had them checked. the dealer has 29th planned
every time.
i should check them but i don’t do it as often
That’s what TPMS is for
also true
RTL433 may reach up to your floor
I’ve got some temperature sensors inside the freezer in a different building that reached the Harry Potter closet with my antenna
Dunno about tire sensors
My vehicles just show teh pressure and pop a light up when they get to low, usually because of temp change, that being said having a 37" tire on a 17" wheel leads to a lot of tire pressure changes due to large volume
i mean it also depends on how far away the car is parked
i have a skinny tire on a big rim
I should probably see if I can pull in my own tires since we never check until the car yells at us
anyhow as soon as the lease runs out i’m getting a BMW
Anyone know how to connect a 1999 Volvo to Home Assistant? Asking for a friend 🤣
Would you believe also using your lawn mower as a hub?
That's some magic mower you have there
I still haven't got the mower to connect to home assistant yet either 🙁
The compatability is just terrible tbh
Husqvarna hubvarna
KTM
I despise strimmers
I was using one and the engine threw a rod
scared the shit out of me
Turns out it had been straightgassed, I put regular petrol in instead of oil petrol mix
The last one I saw that had been run without oil just seized and melted the piston to the cylinder, guess you got "lucky" 🙂
It wasn't the piston that seized in the cylinder, the rod itself ejected
I will also say that battery line trimmers are pretty awesome these days (along with chainsaws, and a lot of other garden tools)
Ones that use 1 type of battery over multiple different tools are best
i mean, i had a android stereo in my 2006 chevy and had a small amount of sensors like location in HA i think lol
Done it few times using a Flux Capacitator, inital setup not flud then MQTT all the way
I wish I could tie my chevy bolt into homeassistant, but they do obnoxious things with CAN that kill access to the port after so many minutes after the car powers off
honestly, unless someone releases an onstar module emulator, that situation isnt going to improve 🙁
Should I have both a local and remote login setup on the mobile app?
I wasn’t sure how to even switch between them
The always on location notification said something about choosing between remote and local connections, and I had set up only a remote connection so I messed that up
Hmmm
Please post there
I need to find a UPS that fits on my “smart closet” shelves
God my to do list is so long
Hey all, I'm looking at getting a new router and was wondering if the flint 2 or flint 3 might be good options? They're on sale atm so thought they might be not bad?
@forest edge what's cooking?
Okay I guess I should finally switch my ecobees over to home assistant with export to HomeKit instead of running stuff from HomeKit

A candy shop by us had these. I loved these as a kid and had to buy them
I was not disappointed
Apparently they don’t issue new API keys anymore so it’s not even an option if I want to use home assistant
Today I learned my washer and dryer connect to WiFi
I do have API access but just completely uselss, take the HK route.
I can download washing profiles from the internet…..for…..in case my favorite washing influencer has a special sauce?
Washing profiles makes sense.
My mother hasn’t even managed to convince me to separate my whites yet
I did setup them but I have no idea how laundry works. 🙂
I just stopped buying white clothes
Here you go: https://youtu.be/F0dmzlSYMeY
In this 1-minute video, WASH Multifamily Laundry Systems gives 10 simple steps for better laundry. Follow these tips for laundry basics to make doing laundry easy.
LMAO, what I meant was how it happens at the house. It's been awhile.
Poppin' tags, yo
T's, jeans and shorts. How complex can life be?
want some maple glazed ham?
Music Assistant smart fade is noice!
I'm interested in the IKEA clearance on their zigbee stuff
I see the website has a bunch of smart devices listed as sale, but the descipritons are for Matter
wondering if the clearance is zigbee, but they just update the description 🤔
if its matter then its likely their new range devices your looking at
Just compare it with the zigbee2mqtt.io database (even if you use zha)
I have the same problem in two rooms. If you can wire up to mains, you can use a couple cheap adapters to step down to 3.3v, which should still be safe for the device. CR2450 is a 3v battery. Just solder or even clip (soldering is better) a couple leads into the device's battery case.
Taskrabbit “replace a battery”
I don't like having battery-powered devices on those ceilings. Too high up. I have the ladder for it, but it's perilous.
If I had to, I'd probably use an external caddy and toss something beefy in instead of a CR2450. Maybe a LiFePo 21700.
Merry christmas everyone, apart from the nightmare furby @lone dagger
Just to clarify, merry christmas Missy, but not the nightmare furby
We have a dead GE smart washer. Needs a new control board. So I could either buy a new control board for $400, or a cheap, used working washer for $50. Care to guess what I did.....
The used washer will likely last longer than the new control board anyway
Those ge washer boards are stupidly designed
Merry christmas in advance for all users, friends, mods, crows, devs and servermissy! Enjoy!
🎄
Good morning all. So I have a bunch of Wiz RGBW Lights (wifi based) throughout the house and they work, but on occassion some of them become unavailable and the only way to fix it is to turn the light switch on and off a couple of times and then they will get seen again. This works but gets annoying. I was trying to create an automation that would turn on and off lights that do not get regularly used to keep them alive but it seems that is spotty. So I guess my next thing is to start looking to find if there are more reliable lights out there that I can use that do not just become unavailable randomly. Looking for suggestions and guidance is appreciated.
#1284966353798697001 with the "Recommendation" tag can help with replacement suggestions, #1284966582375813201 with the Wiz integration.
Look in id:customize. All the other channels are likely hidden. You can unhide them there.
We aren't doing many festivities today so my gf started painting lol
But Merry Christmas to everyone here!
or learn to fix pcbs....
I don't have the patience, or the eyesight these days, tbh. 😛
But yea. I likely could assuming it's just something simple like a cold solder or a bad component like caps/diodes etc. Problem is, it's probably all ICs, and those are .... not straightforward.
I bought my first house and my parents got me an LG washer/dryer as housewarming
Going to the river costs $0!
Do you think the recycling guy will pull out the ten thousand boxes I shoved in my recycling bin
Apparently my energy meter is one of those zigbee smart meters, now to figure out if oncor even lets you provision a smart device to it
Oh they stopped supporting provisioning smart devices for it in 2019/2020
Okay then
They have this smart meter Texas portal with an API but apparently they have started blocking all the home assistant users 😢
"API users use too many resources"
"Ok, give us a local API so we don't have to"
"Also no"
apparently they charged all the customers $300 for the new meters by arguing the smart device connection was to help users save money, and then disabled that feature
lmao
It absolutely isn't to save us money, but it definitely saves them money
The illusion of choice!
Because they don't have to pay people to read the meters (or at least going to each meter; might still have to drive around depending on their radio range), and they can turn power off/on without sending a registered electrician to install/remove the main fuses
well, notable here is that was the argument they made to the government to be allowed to add the bill surcharge
For us plebs, the only advantage is maybe getting time-of-use billing for cheap EV charging overnight, assuming our capitalist overlords are willing
can't get net metering for solar with an older meter here
Huh I think I can’t provision my smart bulbs since I can’t temporarily disable 5 ghz in the new att routers yet
Do they sell cheap phones without 5 ghz support but new enough to install home assistant companion lmao
Hmmmmm
hey yall im looking to get started with home assistant. sorry if this is the wrong channel for these questions but i havent been able to find a beginner FAQ. my main 2 questions are:
- is it better to run the home assistant OS in a VM or just grab a HA green box? i have an unraid server already that i think i could use this for
- if you were starting over today, what network tech would you buy into? i understand 'matter over thread' is supposed to be the modern new one, and zwave is most reliable but expensive, and zigbee seems to still be the most popular even though its kind of old?
Okay I have an idea, I buy a second router and I set it up with the same ssid and pw as the main one, change ssid of main router, I connect to that on 2.4 by enabling only 2.4, provision the matter over WiFi devices, then disconnect new router and change main router back
I think that would work?
you can look through #1284966353798697001 but in the end it's each their own. while there may be some bad ideas there generally isn't anything that stands above everything else
Then just redo that every time I need to provision a new matter device. I can just get a really long Ethernet cable so I can get the dummy router close enough to devices
wut?
I don't know what you got going on but NOTHING is deserving of such methods lol
My phone needs to be on the same 2.4 GHz network as the matter device
The new ATT router/modems for 5 gigabit internet, BGW620-700, do not have advanced configuration options enabled in the firmware yet. In particular I cannot: set separate SSID for 2.4/5ghz or disable one of them, or disable the WiFi at all
that shouldn't matter
My iPhone cannot disable connecting to 5 GHz, and I cannot disable it at the router, so I need a workaround to get my iPhone onto the 2.4 GHz network in order to provision a matter device
the device will connect to whichever one that it can
That’s not what the home assistant documentation says, and it didn’t work when I tried it anyway
you can look into trying something like this https://www.matteralpha.com/how-to/how-to-use-home-assistant-to-add-matter-devices-without-phone
Oh that could work since it’s a phone problem, let’s look into it
reality is it seems to me most devices that can do matter over wifi can just use wifi and skip the whole matter part period. hell the one device I messed with matter on had more features using wifi than the matter
may have to find a custom intergration for whatever it is you are doing but odds these days are generally pretty high for finding something
Looks like that can work I just need a Bluetooth dongle for my home assistant setup
The WiZ home assistant integration requires setting up the device in the wiz app first, which requires provisioning WiFi by being on the same 2.4 GHz network
Maybe I just look for the cheapest android device that doesn’t support 5 GHz WiFi
I have old android devices I could find and charge but I doubt the home assistant app would install anymore
more matter teething issues? say it aint so.
hugs his zigbee network you'll have to pry it outta my cold dead hands. 😛
I either need to change the location of the Nuki thread lock I installed, or abandon MoT before I really start and just put the stupid thing on wifi
It’s fine when it works, which is inevitably when I’m at home and could just go get the key. It always decides not to work when I’m away from home and need to open that door for someone
No, thank you! I debated but I figured try here first.
score! two in-wall smart switches: one sonoff, one jerry whosits, both zigbee, unfortunately all I have now are the pictures, as there were delays in shipping, lol. Also a reciprocating saw and a cutoff tool. plus a huge bit and nut driver set. Oh. and a french press coffee pot.
And a couple of "funny" gifts. 🤣
My in-laws got me one of these:
https://store.seestar.com/products/seestar-s50
Annoyingly, it is cloudy this afternoon
Typical! nice *scope
Hopefully the sky clears later this evening (of course it doesn't get dark until ~10:30pm in this part of the country right now)
It's been dark for almost 4 and a half hours where I am, and it's only 930pm 😛
I plugged the thing in to charge it and muck with settings, has some zoom about it.
My phone at "1x" and "7.1x" (~24 and ~170mm), vs this at its "1x"
yeah, thats a good scope! better share some good astro pics once you get it all dialed in
Will do. We're going for a road trip over the next week and change, and one of the areas we're staying is an actual dark sky reserve (https://www.darkskyreserve.org.nz/), so that is perfect
My MiL bought my kid a decent reflecting telescope back about 10 or 12 years ago. Sadly it got knocked over less than a month later and was knocked completely out of alignment. Repairs would've cost the same as a new one. :/
but, then, that long ago she wasnt even 10 years old yet, she's 18 now.
We did wind up getting a couple of decent pics of both Jupiter and Saturn, by adjusting it, then sticking the phone camera lens against the viewfinder. I don't know what happened to those pics tho
I recall it being good enough to even see a couple of Jupiter's moons.
That's a lot of work.
Wasn’t workable anyway
Right now I’m trying to find if there’s any android phone I can buy that doesn’t support 5 GHz WiFi
You have a router that can't split the bands?
Yep, the latest Att modem router hasn’t enabled any of the advanced config
I can’t disable the WiFi, disable one of the bands, or separate them
Maybe they will enable it in a firmware update but right now I can’t
Not acceptable. IoT must be on a 2.4 network with no band steering whatsoever
Yeah, so I’m trying to find a phone that doesn’t support 5 GHz
As an fyi, you are able to set the att modem to just be a gateway, and use your own router behind it.\
can’t you just get your own router and use that
yeah exactly what breakone9r is saying
That was my other option
that’s a MUCH better option
I just didn’t want to set up my own WiFi until later
Since I wanted to pay to route more Ethernet through my house
This is not the solution you should go for IMHO. Fix the network 😆
100% get the network sorted
For reference:
The new ATT router/modems for 5 gigabit internet, BGW620-700, do not have advanced configuration options enabled in the firmware yet. In particular I cannot: set separate SSID for 2.4/5ghz or disable one of them, or disable the WiFi at all
Bridge it
bridge it
I found a random Reddit thread that if you just modify the html in the page you can change the settings and it actually works but my computer isn’t set up yet to try it
I have 2, well technically 3, different SSIDs on my wifi access points: one that has both 5ghz and 2.4ghz, shares the same name. and another one that is 2.4ghz with a different name, that one is only for my wifi smart stuff. And the only thing that really uses the first 2.4 is my old kindle paperwhite, as it doesnt support 5ghz :p
I would rather jump off a cliff than using ISP provided routing and APs
hard agree
followed by setting up a smart home, then setting it up again a week later
ATT is really cringe it’s a whole thing to bypass it and use your own router, but you can use ip passthrough and two routers pretty easily I think
I've been dealing with consumer mesh WiFi at my in-law's house the last few days and I hate it so very, very much
Mesh? Still in use?
AT&T annoys me greatly in other ways. Did you know that you can only get a couple of different /64 addresses/prefixes for IPv6? You can sometimes fool their system into giving you a /60 prefix... that is COMPLETELY against the IPv6 implemention rules. residential service is supposed to at least get a /56
isn’t mesh a fancy word for multiple APs that work together
But, leave it to AT&T to break things
Mesh was a thing back in the day. 😀 Home runs to AP or nothing.
Yup. there's nothing particular to it. It's just "multiple APs sharing the same SSID using wireless backhauls" instead of "multiple APs sharing the same SSID using hardwired backhauls"
I have a single wireless AP to AP set up, because it's in another building on my property, and I can't be bothered to bury 5m of cat6 😛
I think most of this combo mesh devices fail to mention the overall tax on throughput because of multiple backhauls
Yeah bridging just the 2.4 GHz maybe
no
you bridge from their router to yours
and do whatever you want from yours
you don’t use the att router for anything other than the ethernet connection
Oh that’s what I was going to eventually do anyway….i guess I can do it now. But I need to shop around for whatever mesh system now I guess
Oh no. Not mesh
Typically the web UI of an AT&T modem is 192.168.1.254 the password is on the modem
Again. There's nothing special about so-called mesh systems.
I will say mesh or wired APs— both will be LEAGUES better than the ATT router
They're just 2 or more APs connected via wifi using the same SSID. You can achieve the exact same thing with a pair of cheap Asus routers.
Hell, I have an old Asus here somewhere configured as an AP relay.
Fancy Signal strength ≠ Bandwidth ≠ Throughput
Gabby, did you ask Santa for a good network?
Yeah that’s the thing that’s all locked down in the new devices which puts me in the problem in the first place
maybe you’ll get lucky
I have a sewage leak and I was stopping all purchases until I find out the financial damage
Sorry to hear that
yeah that seems slightly more important
Well. I'm smelling what smells like a sewage leak right now if that helps.. litter box in the bathroom, and the cat decided to poop at the same time as me. Ugh
WAY TOO MUCH INFO
Year end review of automations brings back memories. Darn it some are like 10 years old.
I didn’t want to pay for the wired backhaul yet but my house is way too big for one router
what I thought when I read some people build their own esp precense sensors and tuck them into walls but alas.. some people are just weird
Gotta do it right the 1st time.
its going to be 70F tomorrow.. how crazy is that
noone wants a warm xmas
thats just stupid
So I can buy a meshing system now I guess and install wired backhaul later and fix that then
Right now I’ve only paid to get wired to my office
I used to have, still do in a box, a bunch of Philips Hue everywhere and when I built my new house my GC didn't understand that "I want cans" was all about actual cans and the sub he contracted to went pancakes on the trusses ....
So I am looking at doing switches for each room and last I looked around Innovelli was an up and comer, anyone frustrated by them or love them? I know this is just a chilling channel so if I need to pick a different one that isn't a thread just point me the way
Had a good Christmas Eve since my wife works tomorrow and my mother sent me too much cash so I can finally focus on this project 😄
I am planning overhaul the whole house DC runs for esps to POE soon.
I think that if I go down the Innovelli route that means matter/thread
planning to hire some skinny kid pretzel themself into tight areas you mean?
Matter isn't mature enough for me yet. I'll stick with zigbee, or maybe zwave
Open up walls etc
htey have zigbee and zwave too
thats crazy
yeah they do have zigbee that's good
I have never seen a wall patch job perfectly blend back in
I'm also not quite ready to dig in deep with matter/thread but maybe soon
I heard rumors they've actually discontinued their red (zwave) line.
Do consumer routers these days even manage buffer bloat or do you still have to install openwrt or whatever
I don't think consumer routers need any work with 1Gb links and lower so if you have that as your max you should be fine without some new firmware
you get what you pay for in consumer routers
buffer bloat is only a problem for asynchronous connections. if your up is the same as your down, it's not a problem.
189 wifi devices is little too much. Unifi still runs like butter but time to switch all the esp32s to poe with room for expansion. I want to increase mmwave per zone to like 4
1Gb is super super easy
it’s still really really rough
yeah it felt like it
5 gigabit
that seems unjustifiable expensive
That’s QF’s fav
5 Gb you might want to get a "real" prosumer kind of router
Like what
Unifi or TP-Link are my first suggestions
unifi
Unifi
you are going to probably hear 30 different suggestions but Unifi is so solid lately and I have dumped them and come back
TP-Link is that "good enough for the price" brand
everyone swears by unifi. I'm a DIY kinda guy, so I'd be going for a multi ethernet mini pc and installing opnsense on it....
I don't use USG. But their wifi is solid.
it's not about the software, it is a little, but the hardware choice where Unifi is in control of the entire stack with opnsense you might get something good out of it
Love the in-wall APs
my company sells the best firewalls but I can't sell them to you, need your own rep out there
My current router is a sophos 8 port firewall appliance running opnsense. It's more than sufficient for my connection, but it would struggle with 5gbe, especially since it only has 1gbe ports. Do your research. You need 5gbe or 10gbe ethernet support.
Heard Google is rolling out 20gb
99.999999% of even us can't optimize the backend devices to really use that 😄
Tech from Nokia.
Oh, that reminds me. I also got a 6x2.5gbe pcie card, and another 2x10gbe SFP+ card is coming. 🙂
I have a pretty decent system in a datacenter on a 10Gbe line with 512GB of buffer RAM on a ZFS array that is fully optimized and I struggle to get 10G outside of speed tests
so I'll have the hardware to upgrade from that sophos to a 2.5 capable system that can also do fiber if I ever bite the bullet and run fiber from one end of my house to the other 😛
I ran about 5 years ago. Meh
I just haven't decided yet what to put them in. I have an older Xeon E3 server with spare pcie slots that I could drop them both in, then run opnsense in a proxmox VM.. But I am also looking at buying a used SFF PC with 2 pcie slots.... decisions, decisions.
as long as you don't try to get an rpi working 2.5+ 😄
I mean.. I do have a pi5 😛
I loved them when they came out and then every tech nerd decided it was the only thing they would run for all the things
and it, technically, could do 2.5gbe... I'd need to get an ethernet hat for it, but dual 2.5s do exist for em. 🙂
Okay time to see what the unifi options are
Flash floods all over. 2 more days of rain like this. 🙄
Beautiful 70's past weekend
everything inside would rust if we opened the windows all the time 🙂
is that you? we are down to 52F right now at 10pm
it was nearly 70 today and will be tomorrow
I DID IT
I didn’t want to figure out how to set exact RGB so I just yolo’d it but whatever
Meanwhile it peaked at 76% here during a torrential rain storm...
Nokia does a lot of networking gear
I do quite like Optiplex/ Elitedesk units that have a couple pci-e slots.
happy holidays
U2
Someone liked christmas dinner
I don't think deers can read, it clearly said bird seed on the package
So I'm certain there'll be astrophotography nerds who would look down on it, but damn, as a filthy casual I'm not complaining. 5 minutes of setup, then tell it to point to a thing and go.
Its app even has an option to plan a tour (it helps with where things are above the horizon to get best use of time), think you'd get 3-4 hours battery life.
Given you can just ask it "one nebula please" then just sitting there while it takes 10s exposures and stacks them, not mad about it.
Just sitting on the deck outside the house, admittedly right on the outskirts of the city but still pretty close to civilization.
What are you talking about?
Reply to a conversation from earlier, but I'm guessing the picture didn't attach
It looks absolutely amazing, regardless of what anyone else says
Although, what is a horse doing in the middle of it all?
Ugh I wish there was a way to just make automations use a helper or something so you could change what drives the helper instead of change all your automations all the time
its a space-horse. Distent relative to the Sea-horse
It could be worse, you could have a few thousand lines of yaml to go through 🤣
IYKYK
what is the setup/camera?
Setup: pointing to the sky
Camera: yes
https://share.vos.zip/u/jampacked-sardonic-jampacked-americanbulldog.jpg this is what I got when I did that
hence I am asking 😢
This is basically what I get haha
I wanna get something better
The only thing I am ok at taking pictures of, in the dark, are fireworks
It is just bulb mode with a remote release on a tripod
Honestly I mostly just try and second guess, and never expose more than about 8 seconds, it gets way highlighted
100 ISO, fireworks are bright
Not an expert, just found it fun
I really want a longer lens, I only have a 15-85 on a 60D canon
You don't want to take pictures of moose with a 85mm lens 🤣
We have had them in the garden
fuggg
I ran across some canadian moose
I'd rather do a meet and greet with a black bear
disturbingly big
Just big deer
the most dangerous animal I can have in my backyard is either a fox or a wolf lol
lol
yeh they;re huge
Wolves scare me a bit tbh, we have foxes here too, mostly very timid
We had one that stole bread 🤣
lmao
I mean I get why they're a bit scary but usually you are not food for them
the moose give me the impression they're just special
Lol
its just too funny
Moose just like to stomp things I think
yyeah
I haven't seen one for about a year
The video I posted was a mum and 2 kids, the kids haven't been around for ages, the mum wonders down about once a year
arent they more attack-y when they have babies?
We have 4 deer here, 2 mums, 2 babies, have seen a male about a year ago too, he was the first to work out that the bird feeder was actually a deer feeder too
Moose are horrible with babies, yes
Ah I did remember that correctly
I just don't mess with them at all
I mean deer in general lol
Had one by my works van one day, called to let my boss know I wasn't dying that morning and I would be late
🤣
Honestly, the deer seem quite timid
They run a good 20 meters away and stand and watch if you disturb them
just they prefer to run away
I mean I don't live with them but it would be such a funny call to make imho
"sorry I am late" "traffic?" no, moose
LOL yeah
Thry do cause problems quite often, one ran into part of the local hospital and had to be shot not too long ago
As messed up as it sounds it is a believable reason because it isn't unusual
I mean theyre the size of a small LKW so
Trees over the road too
BOBR
My general impression is somehwat horse like: really stupid and randomly agros
(horses aren't randomly agro but just unwieldy)
my friend has a specimin that I am sure HATES me
I trust a moose in a way I know it will fuck me up, and I go up to horses and know it may well fuck me up, if that makes sense
it tries to be all cutesy and when you least expect it it tries to bite
Exactly
Proper wankers
poland has a TON iirc
"Omg a stick, better throw my rider off and go zoom zoom"
lmao
true
or just the regular self-startle
Oh shit my shadow
there's this woman in IG that street trains horses, I follow her. Her account embodies everything I do not like in horses lol
@last cedar stop leaving things behind
You wouldn't happen to know where this is, I went hunting for doormats and forgot where I left them?
They get spooked so easy omg
looks like a fine pair of new house slippers
lol same but I dont trample you
I asked all my bandit friends to visit you and wish you the same
Thank you. Will save me time crafting them into gift bags
Hi!
I been out of loop past year with HA.
But i just noticed raccoon related emojis, and it piqued my interest.
What are they about?

those
do you like my deranged automation
i promise this exists for a reason
my tv remote has activities and i want casting to the shield to turn the tv on
my logic is if you cast it'll trigger shield turned on, then i can trigger setting the activity to shield which will turn the tv and reciever on. if they are already on because you used the remote then nothing happens
Just because I'm a hopeless pedant, you want the word "piqued"
thanks, sorry, didn't know its that's how the phrase is supposed to be haha
Oh, I only mention to educate, not to shame. A -lot- of people get that one wrong.
@tidal bronze assume you got an enema for xmas. prob some cardboard shaped cupcake as a reward at the end
I apprecieate, dont worry ^^
I got everything running the way I want it finally.
RPI5 + docker, ha z2m, matterbridge (to connect to Google home, my wife refuses to use the ha app), grafana, prometheus, nut
How often am I supposed to wipe my floor
Okay tomorrow I need to create my first automations with my outside lights and uhh sleep/awake for the thermostat
Then home/away next
automations?
I mean you could also just use climate objects and then use a.. I forgot the hacs thing but its an integrated thermostat thing to automate the smartness and etc
https://github.com/jmcollin78/versatile_thermostat
This was the one.
Eric Deggans (TV critic) speaking truth: https://www.threads.com/@edeggans/post/DSsxApViQqR
I haven't really worked with home assistant since I set it up 4 years ago, but my wife got me a Voice preview edition for Christmas. Kind of excited to get back into this, just hoping backup & restore works the way I want since my old system was 32-bit
(spoiler: backup & restore appears to work as expected, obscure shelly relay automations work great still, now I get to update all the packages that discontinued 32-bit support) 🙂
Cheapest DDR5 16gb I can buy right now fuuuuuuck
yeah its crazy, its now up to half of what apple charges for ram.
It's called a fridge

You can use it to warm in the food out cold the food
and beverages
its -5 here so mans not hot
hot + worst weather
Well at least they're honest 🤣
sorry boss, we don't have a fucking clue where it went
We think Santa may have stolen it
Damn that’s a nasty blowout
that tire is from 2013?
Front right, too. No. 2023.
I'm gonna go see if the place I got them from will do a warranty, but they're closed. Sometimes small towns suck. 🤣
Yeah, this is a manufacturing defect. On the inside, you can see where it started. Looks like a bubble popped.
If they don't, I'll just buy a tire. But I'm gonna at least try to get a free one first. 🤣
The bad part is, I had to dig in the side panel of my car to get the lug/jack tool because it fell off its mount and fell all the way down inside the fender well. Buried to my elbow into my car's innards fishing around going "ugh, please be dirt and not mouse guts"
ahhhh sam altmans head on a fucking pike sounds really good right now doesn't it?
🙃
I wish his sleeves got wet when he washes his hands and his stupid AI tells him how to get them dry in that annoying tiktok voice 24/7 non stop
What's going to be nice is, when they finally spin up enough chip manufacturing to meet the AI needs, and then the AI bubble pops. the entire semiconductor industry is going to bottom out. I can't wait.
I wonder what powerhungry people will do with an abundance of cheap compute
After OpenAi spent the money from Nvidia spent the money from TSMC spent the money from ASML spent the money from OpenAi spent the money from Nvidia...
and entire oceans of personally identifiable information
surely nothing silly, right? ...right?
Good thing it didn't throw you off the motorway at high speed, but god that is shit 🙁
The clearance stuff should all be zigbee
I loaded the fuck up on smart plugs and remotes and some sensors, for like $6 each you can't beat it
Yeah. Anyone with their whole hand on the wheel, and not just a few fingers should be able to keep that from happening with my little Honda.. 🙂
Unfortunately IKEA in my country (Ireland) don't ship a bunch of stuff for no good reason at all... I only managed to get a couple dimmer switches (RODRET)
All the stuff I wanted was listed as "only ships in the big truck"
I have been spending my last couple weeks getting back into painting Warhammer 40k and I thought cardboard crack was expensive but this plastic crack is out of this world in sunk costs
I am looking at "saving thousands" and buying a resin printer and all of the accoutrements that I'll need for around $1k
You would need to be printing entire armies for both you and all your friends to remotely break even
possibly, just one 2k point army that I'm looking at is $900 according to toll hammer and that's not even a popular or expensive army
I'm back and forth on it because I don't actually play the game, I just like painting and the resin printer could give me interesting things to paint that are more detailed than my FDM
This is one of my colleagues, we were testing our new person-scale 3d scanner at work and this is one of the first decent models we got out of it
Here's one I printed and someone else painted
Including the base, 58mm tall
yeah that's neat
which resin printer are you using? I'm staring at a Saturn 4 ultra 16k
Formlabs Form3
I have a Creality K2+ for FDM
Now you just need a person-sized 3D printer
The expensive enterprise option, because I made a decision on the time/money scale
yeah if you are doing things for money it's the way to go
I won't make a dime
99% of my 3D printing decisions are build plate size and then ease of use second, some aspects of the Saturn 4 are not great but it has a lot of pros for home usage
I have done short-notice prints for colleagues a few times, printer will fit 10-12 standard-size minis and I can generally crank out two full print runs (printed, cleaned, post-processed) in a weekend. People seem to be happy to pay the $6 or so it averages out
I grew up working in polystyrene resins (if I recall correctly since I was young) which are a catalyst driven and you use methyl ethyl ketone peroxide to do that - I've been avoiding resin for so very long because I hate the feel of it but that was a different world
and that was the 90's
It definitely isn't pleasant stuff.
back then I was doing 55 gallon drums of it and washing my body in acetone
hi is there somewhere i can go for open thread border router / matter over thread troubleshooting
Did the latest Unifi Protect firmware upgrade break automations for anyone else?
Motion is no longer available
thx
does someone know Vintagestory the game? I wann know if i'm the only one who wanna display some stats (like weather, player count, time & date)
anyone brave enough to run the frigate 17.0 beta yet?
were you using a coral?
Yes
Literally no change from 16 except some cosmetic stuff
I feel like @tidal bronze was involved in this: https://www.threads.com/@local12wkrc/post/DSupSajgHPN?xmt=AQF03Xb_jWUHtkbwS1TYEEfd5HcYVQl22-hfmaFmPuaHtK7h21-b3SpBWCRUHB4nTfJ3iwj4&slof=1
Does anyone have a smart scale they like that works with home assistant
I saw there is a eufy integration but I can't find any eufy scales on Amazon
Well it's probably pretty great if this doesn't use odd frameworks
I missed out on this. Whole lobster as back at Costco 😀
We don't need to clone you
Well. Buy a better one
wtf is up with the HP secure boot crap
this pc the woman's dad bought is a complete nightmare
At the end: Next week on..
Should i type louder??
LOUDER
is that what it's called? I thought it was just unnecessary HP headaches
damn HP
I had to go in and disable it just to run ventoy lol
Secure boot is pretty standard for anything since 2012
"understanding technology" is not the same thing as "navigating shit UI and getting drenched with leaking abstractions" tho
noice
There shouldn't really be a reason to disable it
yea well tell HP that
no thanks
this thing had like a whole bitlocker drive lock and everything.. was comical it took 60 seconds of google to bypass all the crap
Turning stuff off really doesn't bypass anything
Neither should you really want to turn off disk encryption or software signature verification
Unless you are about to install the 7th browser toolbar
:P
You kinda should else people end up doing it unintentional
Common sense ain't that common
you know what HP tells people for the consumer line of these machines when someone loses the drivelock password?
Tho realistically can't you just boot into a windows boot media stick, then reinstall from there with wiping a disk?
to throw away the disk
I don't recall having issues that way with anything once
They made it pretty convenient
prob cause you never had to mess with one where the crap was preset
It's present on anything since 2012
this machine came to me like this and I sure as hell don't believe her dad set that up lol
it was a refurb machine but jesus
It should be enabled by default somewhere along those times
Never trust a refurb tho
Haven't had trouble with HP PCs either yet, it's always just their printers
What if you angered atx and he remote setup this to be painful

The tinfoil hats were right after all
I should have looked to see what variation of HP elitedesk this was before starting this low level disk wipe
thats like paying for an ide kinda money but its for ssh
i hate how there is no self hostable alternative
same energy as everything demanding you install an app or give it internet access
i dont hate on it if it were fairly priced, subscriptions can be fine
if its priced at the "we rather not have you as customer" price, then that is just stupid
looking at you autocad
does anyone here have wall mounted dimmers that they love? I'm using the shellys but i'm kinda blah on them (tho they look really nice)
lmao i mean they’d rather have b2b sales. i have a hobby license for 0 cost but it’s just irritating to work with
anyhow most subscriptions simply are not with it
they dont which is so terrible
like you get it free as a student
but then they want 2200€ a year
or you to not use autocad and go with the limited variant of the specd down application of fusion 360
rather earn 0 than a couple hundred bucks
pretty sad that we cant just have nice things
Got a new disk drive
Spent the last day ripping movies and transcoding them for jellyfin
oh my bad i use fusion indeed lol
i don’t need more
HP consumer products are generally crap but their business stuff is ok IMO
Same for Dell consumer vs business
i think something is wrong with my sunspec integration....
using all the energy all the time
Mining bitcoins are you?
that is how my neighbors feel when i arrive with led matrix lol
I put an LED extra light on my Volvo finally
it is like having the sun on the front of the car
240W LED
I angled it down slightly since filming that
lets iluminate the sky incase a bird comes at me
:P
it’s for the tree bears
using Shelly relays behind dumb momentary rocker switches (e.g.) with the Shelly relays in detached mode is my recommendation
lutron makes some really nice switches too but some of their features don't work with HA. most of them have dimming sliders with LED indicators for brightness levels that can't be synced with HA light states so even if you use dimming-compatible smart relays, if you control the lights outside of the physical switch (including any automation) then the indicators get uncoupled from actual/visible brightness
inovelli's switches are the best for HA integration but it's pretty spendy to fit a whole home out with those. I think I priced my place out at $1500 (20 switches), and just wasn't willing to pull the trigger on that. I get most of the same function out of $320 of Shelly Mini 1 Gen4s + $240 dumb switches

small indie startup
I like the various Z-Wave dimmers on the market. Inovelli and Zooz seem to be good although I haven’t used them
Both are great. This is better for #1284966353798697001 though
are there any antennae supporting zigbee 4.0 yet? preferably zigbee 4.0 and matter
No, ZB 4.0 was just announced, so it will likely be a few years before anything even makes it to the market
oh ok - anything that can handle 3.0 and matter and isnt PoE?
are these forums for anything even casual questions? they seem like tech support lol
please post there, that's what it's for
now I have to do presence detection and bedtime detection for thermostat
do you need global ipv6 for matter over thread to work?
Ask in #1284966617670881350
I call that setting a schedule and flipping the switch when I leave the room
Gonna have to get a bed sensor now 🤣
Manually flipping a switch is not automation. It is remote control.
oklahoma moment
I've played with that, it feels cheap tho, maybe i'm using the wrong rockers, or wrong config.
What was the connectivity to your HA instance? Were the relays connected via wifi or zigbee?
inovelli white series (matter-over-thread) dimmers have been working great for me
have 15 of them set up
Take this discussion to #1284966353798697001 please.
Hey all, quick weird question but I just got a new router I want to use, and I want to change the ssid for the new router - I've got ha running on proxmox along with about 25 WiFi devices (mostly Shelly relays) - is there a good way to transfer everything to the new router?
@hybrid dust use same IP range and SSID's/Passwords as the old router. Best case is to add static ip's for devices in router and use dhcp for devices itself. If you use the same network settings as the old router, your devices will show up on new router. Otherwise create a new thread in https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284966540617449515
if you want to change the wifi ssid, you're probably going to have to individually re-setup a lot of devices :/
Yeah, I want to change the ssid unfortunately
I finished moving devices to my new SSID just yesterday
granted, I had multiple active and just didn't bother for a couple months
Any tips 😛
for what it’s worth the channel description thing says it’s for just issues and not like, recommendations or discussion. might be worth updating the description to fit the intent
sorry meant to reply to the hardware one
There's a recommendations tag. Use it.
what would you like me to post?
Here? Anything but HA support questions. As per the channel description.
huh?
Preferably raccoon pictures.
Keep the cups of tea flowing, you will need it
And also, don't eat yellow snow
2 tips
Oke nabu please translate this to international values
sat has high of 304 K and low of 283K, sun has high of 293K and low of 271K, and Mon has high of 275K and low of 267K
does anyone really use international system of units for weather though
i only ever see celsius and fahrenheit
it’s actually lowercase, kelvin
poor kelvin
but Celsius is indeed uppercase (for the unit)
is it 32° that's the same in C and F? can never remember
Kelvin is also a proper name. Only the unit symbol is lower case
no that doesn't sound right
it's -40° for equilibrium
the symbol is uppercase
32 burgers is 0°s
the unit name is lowercase
you can write it uppercase if you’re writing in German 🙂
it's Horse's body temperature
of course
so when someone says "it's 100°F outside" that's some pretty serious heat
(C)orrect, (F)alse
I think 100 degrees fahrenheit is what i have my bidet water set to
proper popo
Thank you that is quite adrop
-40 F is also -40 C
Ah, Ongy beat me to it
You could set it to 100C
Then you wouldn't have anything left to clean a 2nd time
Can't clean you bum if you have no bum
metric is just weird ngl
You say that
But a 1 meter cube of water is exactly 1000 liters and weighs exactly 1000kg
Instead of something that is 2560373637 1000ths of an inch cubed is exactly 373829363839.48473 american gallons of water that weighs 12 cheeseburgers
It is okay, happens to the best of us
I started doing rough conversions in my head when I speak to him to make it easier
I mean bad conversions causes us to lose a rocket lol
The Mars Climate Orbiter (formerly the Mars Surveyor '98 Orbiter) was a robotic space probe launched by NASA on December 11, 1998, to study the Martian climate, Martian atmosphere, and surface changes and to act as the communications relay in the Mars Surveyor '98 program for Mars Polar Lander. However, on September 23, 1999, communication with ...
thats why I have a map of the location of the sun tattooed on my arm lol
They should really make it a bright glowing orb in the sky so one could tell easily

what an insane idea
is it just an "up" arrow?
waddupdowg

I believe the Hubble telescope was also out of focus when it was launched because of bad metric/ imperial conversions
Can I borrow you when my solar panels output is low?
That is a crazy cool looking tattoo btw
I leave the cat alone for 5 minutes...
"well apparently my six-story fort maze with a heated blanket and an automatic food dispenser ain't building itself"
I didn't want to make a post unless had to but can we use the model runner in docker and have HA use that instead of running ollama?

Mmmm
Definately worth checking the pressure now and then
I think I need to let a little out of mine
same
TPMS triggered while doing 240 lol
Isn't that on voyagers 1 & 2
So fancy having tpms 😛
I have a guage I can put on!
correct
Seems like we will have -9C next week so maybe I should leave it as it is
Iirc it was perhaps 1 to 2 psi high at about 4C
Just hook it up to Hubvarna!
Where are the tatoos of hello in all languages
I am trying, still won't connect to each other 🙁
ew, people I only want to communicate with aliens
Try connecting it with trimmer cable to see if it’s an interference problem
Nice! 🚀
just pray
I never thought to use TP cable (trimmer pair)
You can also try putting the hub in compatibility mode by lowering the throttle, but don’t forget to check the carburetor too
Actually, funny story, I can't throttle back with it
I could do with seeing what is causing that
The little rod is moving the spindle
But I am not sure if the valve is attached to the spindle anymore
maybe this is why I can't pair it to home assiatant

we'll get it to you sometime in the next year
At least they settled on the year.

@forest edge I survived, 🙂
install smart doorbell camera
I already got the Amazon guy on video yeeting a package onto my property lmao
lungs ok? did you swallow a 3d mapping device?
3 days of vaping, iqos and hookah. Gotta keep tabs
yea I don't think lung issues show up that quick lol
I noticed they left off the stomach condition.. guess they didn't want to make you worry
LOL, Grafana does not lie
thats a lot of insects and gerbils you are eating
funny how you buy stuff on a wim years ago that turn out to be life savers out of the blue like one of those usb to ethernet adapters
Those always come in handy
OMFG! YESSS!!!!
To all who ask what that is: This is data from my vintagestory server!
is that a minecraft ripoff or some kind of mega mod for minecraft
You got me thinking about terminating my reverse proxy in pfSense and I just got HAProxy working there for a couple of services. I've added basic http auth for one service, so that works as well as with NPM. And ACME will handle cert renewals for me. Now to decide if there's anything I'd be missing
NPM has a heck of a lot nicer UI, but nearly anything beats pfSense configuration for just about anything
it's pretty straightfoward to add new services once you have everything set up properly
it was originally a mod for mc and then they decided to make it there own game
Vintagestory was supposed to be a Minecraft Mod (TerraFirmaCraft), but then well, it developed into something that was more then just a Minecraft Mod, and turned into a Own game.
Vintagestory is far more realistic then Minecraft, and has (well for me) better Graphics, but Minecraft has well the Nether, you can be more creative and stuff.
Some interesting lines on the graph lol, I don't think it was made for these low values
Anyone have a cleaner way to cast youtube and jellyfin from my phone to browser instances on my laptop?
Both offer remote control
But I can only think of super hacky ways of switching which window to show
I can script my window manager and I can probably determine what is playing based on tcpdump but before I do something stupid like that I wonder if there is a kind of casting that would take both
I dont want to just screen mirror I want the laptop to be pulling it's own stuff and just use the phone as a remote
Music Assistant?
This is support make a thread. But you can install a browser for every video service you dont use for browsing and control that.

That's pretty cool
It's gonna break

lmao that’s for sure
i make bad financial decisions
Now make it wled operated and RGB lit, then it'd be cool
Could make it really look like bubbles then
i can probably find this on ali for 5 euro

I have 5 spot lights on the side of my house

I wonder if it drifts at the same rate
