hmmmm boy(14) wants to learn Linux as his security competition he's part of has a Linux component, thinking MINT, I remember starting on redhat many many many many years ago, saying screw this and ignoring Linux for a few years until I did Ubuntu, don't want him to experience the same thing, ubuntu/debian distro's still seem the easiest to dip your toes in the water, anyone have any thoughts?

stuck mortar
#

Doing the math, I’ve used Ubuntu more than everything else combined

#

Customer systems I interact with are either rhel/centos or Ubuntu

grizzled gull
#

I've run mainly Ubuntu variants the last 15 years (or longer, forget when ubuntu came out), recently trying Fedora Plasma, liking it so far

marble elk
#

fedoras pretty nice, i like to daily drive it on stuff that i want to run newerish versions of things but still be pretty reliable

iron granite
#

I'd say Debian and Fedora.

marble elk
#

something debian based like ubuntu isnt a bad choice though

iron granite
#

If you can handle Debian, you can handle Ubuntu as well. And Fedora is a starting point for the RHEL way.

vivid wraith
#

I’ve done a few 5 or so year stints with gentoo as my main computer

#

I want to try arch but every time I get the chance I just stick to what I know

stuck mortar
#

Gentoo is xkcd 303 personified

marble elk
#

ive done a gentoo install but never really got into it, arch is my version of what you just said there lol, my desktop runs arch and with it being customized for my current network boot setup and lacking time, I just havent switched it to anything else(not that arch is bad at all, its great lol, but i would like to do fedora on my desktop at some point)

grizzled gull
#

Part of the reason I went with Fedora was because its a happy medium between Arch(bleeding edge) and ubuntu varients(not withstanding unstable distros)

vivid wraith
#

on my webservers I run debian, but that has occasionally been annoying over the years when they’re too far removed from a new release and I can’t even compile what I want with in-repo dependencies bc even those are too out of date. But on the whole I prefer the stability

marble elk
#

yepppp

#

i do recent ubuntu releases for my servers aside from my BGP routers, those are straight debian

marble elk
vivid wraith
#

gentoo was actually my first time trying linux so I never had a chance to be annoyed by its idiosyncrasies beyond learning linux in the first place

marble elk
#

Ahh remjnds me, at some point I want to try to do a LFS install, no idea when I'll ever have time though lol

vivid wraith
#

I actually ran gentoo unstable most of that time

#

it’s crazy how much work the gentoo unstable community puts into testing packages before the other distributions see them, but mostly big picture “this release doesn’t even compile” sort of stuff

marble elk
#

My first experience with Linux I think was Ubuntu 14.04, but I didn't use or understand it too much until a friend got me to seriously try debian in 2018. Started with xfce and quickly was moved to i3. Since using i3. I haven't been able to go back lol

#

I can't go without some kind of tiling

I used enlightenment for a while and then i3 for ages

gentoo’s package manager is great, I always miss it when using other stuff

I bought my younger child(10) a flight yoke and pedals as he really wants to be a pilot, I was going to let him cruise along with a 2070, but then there was a sale on a 9070xt hellhound on amazon for 600 with 10% off, after reading all the warnings about graphics cards prices going up because of ram, not sure how i feel about it yet lol

marble elk
# vivid wraith I used enlightenment for a while and then i3 for ages

yah i3 is great, only switched off cause i like certain gnome features and also gtk themes to work normal, and what i was using to do that started to get finicky and old, i think gnome-flashback or something. now i daily gnome with pop-shell but im starting to dabble in cosmic

trying to keep it as simple as possible to reduce maintenance burden

marble elk

grizzled gull
marble elk
#

oh ooops

grizzled gull
#

I use it to turn on lights and check for packages, making me second guess if I even needed it lol

marble elk
#

i feel like i could do so much more with my HA automations but dont really, all i really do most of the time is just some simple sunset/sunrise on/off type of stuff

grizzled gull
marble elk
#

ahhh, that sounds like a good idea actually

#

just bought a house so im setting up a new HA(current is at my parents), currently i have the outside lights set to turn on at sunset but only when me or my wife are there, that would be a good addition lol

grizzled gull
#

My next automation is going to be starting timelapse's when the weather says it's snowing

marble elk
#

oooo

#

what kind of cameras do you have? i actually didnt know i could link cameras into HA until recently when setting that up, connected some of my unifi protects cameras into it

grizzled gull
#

Right now just reolink camera's

#

And omg I just realized what is causing my 1 camera to work while its inside and then when it's outside for a short period, its getting cold, and stops working

marble elk
#

oh no, check the datasheet and see what it says for temp rating?

grizzled gull
#

grizzled gull
#

ahh thats exactly it

#

It went poof when it got cold out

Now I'm worried about my other more expensive camera

#

marble elk

hmm, idk, well how cold is it out rn?

#

close to that or?

grizzled gull
#

Well.... it was -15F when the camera went poof 😛

marble elk
#

hmmmm, that could do it ;)

#

i mean i would think they natually heat up themselves a bit but maybe thats a bit far from rated lol

vivid wraith
#

im in dallas so the coldest it gets is like -2F

grizzled gull
#

it gets that cold in Dallas?

vivid wraith
#

that’s like a ~50y freeze event (but maybe more common now?)

#

last time it got that cold was 2021

#

−10C is probably fine for dallas as long as the failure mode is stops-working and not breaks

grizzled gull
#

Now reading more about the specific camera model, I don't think the cold killed it, many many people use them outside with no issues

marble elk

# vivid wraith i need a huge ladder i have 25 ft ceilings 😭

I have the same problem in two rooms. If you can wire up to mains, you can use a couple cheap adapters to step down to 3.3v, which should still be safe for the device. CR2450 is a 3v battery. Just solder or even clip (soldering is better) a couple leads into the device's battery case.

I don't like having battery-powered devices on those ceilings. Too high up. I have the ladder for it, but it's perilous.

Good morning all. So I have a bunch of Wiz RGBW Lights (wifi based) throughout the house and they work, but on occassion some of them become unavailable and the only way to fix it is to turn the light switch on and off a couple of times and then they will get seen again. This works but gets annoying. I was trying to create an automation that would turn on and off lights that do not get regularly used to keep them alive but it seems that is spotty. So I guess my next thing is to start looking to find if there are more reliable lights out there that I can use that do not just become unavailable randomly. Looking for suggestions and guidance is appreciated.

Apparently my energy meter is one of those zigbee smart meters, now to figure out if oncor even lets you provision a smart device to it

#

Oh they stopped supporting provisioning smart devices for it in 2019/2020

Okay then

They have this smart meter Texas portal with an API but apparently they have started blocking all the home assistant users 😢

"API users use too many resources"
"Ok, give us a local API so we don't have to"

apparently they charged all the customers $300 for the new meters by arguing the smart device connection was to help users save money, and then disabled that feature

#

lmao

ocean oar
#

It absolutely isn't to save us money, but it definitely saves them money

ocean oar
#

Because they don't have to pay people to read the meters (or at least going to each meter; might still have to drive around depending on their radio range), and they can turn power off/on without sending a registered electrician to install/remove the main fuses

@tidal bronze Merry Xmas

#

hey yall im looking to get started with home assistant. sorry if this is the wrong channel for these questions but i havent been able to find a beginner FAQ. my main 2 questions are:

  1. is it better to run the home assistant OS in a VM or just grab a HA green box? i have an unraid server already that i think i could use this for
  2. if you were starting over today, what network tech would you buy into? i understand 'matter over thread' is supposed to be the modern new one, and zwave is most reliable but expensive, and zigbee seems to still be the most popular even though its kind of old?
vivid wraith
#

Okay I have an idea, I buy a second router and I set it up with the same ssid and pw as the main one, change ssid of main router, I connect to that on 2.4 by enabling only 2.4, provision the matter over WiFi devices, then disconnect new router and change main router back

#

I think that would work?

forest edge
vivid wraith
#

Then just redo that every time I need to provision a new matter device. I can just get a really long Ethernet cable so I can get the dummy router close enough to devices

vivid wraith
#

I’m trying to set up a matter device

#

I think that’s my best option

forest edge
#

I don't know what you got going on but NOTHING is deserving of such methods lol

vivid wraith
#

My phone needs to be on the same 2.4 GHz network as the matter device

#

The new ATT router/modems for 5 gigabit internet, BGW620-700, do not have advanced configuration options enabled in the firmware yet. In particular I cannot: set separate SSID for 2.4/5ghz or disable one of them, or disable the WiFi at all

forest edge
#

that shouldn't matter

vivid wraith
#

My iPhone cannot disable connecting to 5 GHz, and I cannot disable it at the router, so I need a workaround to get my iPhone onto the 2.4 GHz network in order to provision a matter device

forest edge
#

the device will connect to whichever one that it can

vivid wraith
#

That’s not what the home assistant documentation says, and it didn’t work when I tried it anyway

forest edge
vivid wraith
vivid wraith
forest edge
#

reality is it seems to me most devices that can do matter over wifi can just use wifi and skip the whole matter part period. hell the one device I messed with matter on had more features using wifi than the matter

#

may have to find a custom intergration for whatever it is you are doing but odds these days are generally pretty high for finding something

vivid wraith
#

Looks like that can work I just need a Bluetooth dongle for my home assistant setup

vivid wraith
vivid wraith

#

I recall it being good enough to even see a couple of Jupiter's moons.

vivid wraith
#

Right now I’m trying to find if there’s any android phone I can buy that doesn’t support 5 GHz WiFi

tidal bronze
#

You have a router that can't split the bands?

vivid wraith
#

I can’t disable the WiFi, disable one of the bands, or separate them

#

Maybe they will enable it in a firmware update but right now I can’t

tidal bronze
#

Not acceptable. IoT must be on a 2.4 network with no band steering whatsoever

vivid wraith
#

Yeah, so I’m trying to find a phone that doesn’t support 5 GHz

robust flicker
#

As an fyi, you are able to set the att modem to just be a gateway, and use your own router behind it.\

weak musk
#

can’t you just get your own router and use that

vivid wraith

I found a random Reddit thread that if you just modify the html in the page you can change the settings and it actually works but my computer isn’t set up yet to try it

robust flicker
#

I have 2, well technically 3, different SSIDs on my wifi access points: one that has both 5ghz and 2.4ghz, shares the same name. and another one that is 2.4ghz with a different name, that one is only for my wifi smart stuff. And the only thing that really uses the first 2.4 is my old kindle paperwhite, as it doesnt support 5ghz :p

tidal bronze
#

I would rather jump off a cliff than using ISP provided routing and APs

weak musk
#

followed by setting up a smart home, then setting it up again a week later

vivid wraith
#

ATT is really cringe it’s a whole thing to bypass it and use your own router, but you can use ip passthrough and two routers pretty easily I think

ocean oar
#

I've been dealing with consumer mesh WiFi at my in-law's house the last few days and I hate it so very, very much

tidal bronze
#

Mesh? Still in use?

robust flicker
#

AT&T annoys me greatly in other ways. Did you know that you can only get a couple of different /64 addresses/prefixes for IPv6? You can sometimes fool their system into giving you a /60 prefix... that is COMPLETELY against the IPv6 implemention rules. residential service is supposed to at least get a /56

weak musk
#

isn’t mesh a fancy word for multiple APs that work together

robust flicker
#

But, leave it to AT&T to break things

tidal bronze
#

Mesh was a thing back in the day. 😀 Home runs to AP or nothing.

robust flicker
#

Yup. there's nothing particular to it. It's just "multiple APs sharing the same SSID using wireless backhauls" instead of "multiple APs sharing the same SSID using hardwired backhauls"

#

I have a single wireless AP to AP set up, because it's in another building on my property, and I can't be bothered to bury 5m of cat6 😛

tidal bronze
#

I think most of this combo mesh devices fail to mention the overall tax on throughput because of multiple backhauls

vivid wraith
#

Yeah bridging just the 2.4 GHz maybe

weak musk
#

no

#

you bridge from their router to yours

#

and do whatever you want from yours

#

you don’t use the att router for anything other than the ethernet connection

vivid wraith
#

Oh that’s what I was going to eventually do anyway….i guess I can do it now. But I need to shop around for whatever mesh system now I guess

tidal bronze
#

Oh no. Not mesh

robust flicker
#

Typically the web UI of an AT&T modem is 192.168.1.254 the password is on the modem

#

Again. There's nothing special about so-called mesh systems.

weak musk
#

I will say mesh or wired APs— both will be LEAGUES better than the ATT router

robust flicker
#

They're just 2 or more APs connected via wifi using the same SSID. You can achieve the exact same thing with a pair of cheap Asus routers.

So I am looking at doing switches for each room and last I looked around Innovelli was an up and comer, anyone frustrated by them or love them? I know this is just a chilling channel so if I need to pick a different one that isn't a thread just point me the way

Do consumer routers these days even manage buffer bloat or do you still have to install openwrt or whatever

I don't think consumer routers need any work with 1Gb links and lower so if you have that as your max you should be fine without some new firmware

unifi

tidal bronze

Unifi

shell zealot

you are going to probably hear 30 different suggestions but Unifi is so solid lately and I have dumped them and come back

#

TP-Link is that "good enough for the price" brand

robust flicker
#

everyone swears by unifi. I'm a DIY kinda guy, so I'd be going for a multi ethernet mini pc and installing opnsense on it....

tidal bronze
#

I don't use USG. But their wifi is solid.

shell zealot
#

it's not about the software, it is a little, but the hardware choice where Unifi is in control of the entire stack with opnsense you might get something good out of it

tidal bronze
#

Love the in-wall APs

shell zealot
#

my company sells the best firewalls but I can't sell them to you, need your own rep out there

robust flicker
#

My current router is a sophos 8 port firewall appliance running opnsense. It's more than sufficient for my connection, but it would struggle with 5gbe, especially since it only has 1gbe ports. Do your research. You need 5gbe or 10gbe ethernet support.

I have a pretty decent system in a datacenter on a 10Gbe line with 512GB of buffer RAM on a ZFS array that is fully optimized and I struggle to get 10G outside of speed tests

robust flicker
#

so I'll have the hardware to upgrade from that sophos to a 2.5 capable system that can also do fiber if I ever bite the bullet and run fiber from one end of my house to the other 😛

tidal bronze
#

I ran about 5 years ago. Meh

robust flicker
#

I just haven't decided yet what to put them in. I have an older Xeon E3 server with spare pcie slots that I could drop them both in, then run opnsense in a proxmox VM.. But I am also looking at buying a used SFF PC with 2 pcie slots.... decisions, decisions.

@hybrid dust use same IP range and SSID's/Passwords as the old router. Best case is to add static ip's for devices in router and use dhcp for devices itself. does anyone really use international system of units for weather though

#

i only ever see celsius and fahrenheit

arctic quarry
#

lol

#

tbf Celsius is just like signed Kelvin

#

or ig Kelvin is unsigned Celsius

vivid wraith
#

it’s actually lowercase, kelvin

arctic quarry
#

poor kelvin

vivid wraith
#

but Celsius is indeed uppercase (for the unit)

arctic quarry
#

is it 32° that's the same in C and F? can never remember

glacial knot
#

Kelvin is also a proper name. Only the unit symbol is lower case

arctic quarry
#

no that doesn't sound right

glacial knot
#

it's -40° for equilibrium

vivid wraith
#

the symbol is uppercase

arctic quarry
#

right

#

makes more sense

glacial knot
#

32 burgers is 0°s

vivid wraith
#

the unit name is lowercase

arctic quarry
#

oh yeah

#

and 100°F is roughly body temperature iirc

vivid wraith
#

you can write it uppercase if you’re writing in German 🙂

glacial knot
#

it's Horse's body temperature

arctic quarry
#

of course

glacial knot
#

which is pretty close to human

#

yagaThink I wonder if it drifts at the same rate

arctic quarry
#

so when someone says "it's 100°F outside" that's some pretty serious heat

You got me thinking about terminating my reverse proxy in pfSense and I just got HAProxy working there for a couple of services. I've added basic http auth for one service, so that works as well as with NPM. And ACME will handle cert renewals for me. Now to decide if there's anything I'd be missing

#

NPM has a heck of a lot nicer UI, but nearly anything beats pfSense configuration for just about anything

#

it's pretty straightfoward to add new services once you have everything set up properly

# forest edge is that a minecraft ripoff or some kind of mega mod for minecraft

Vintagestory was supposed to be a Minecraft Mod (TerraFirmaCraft), but then well, it developed into something that was more then just a Minecraft Mod, and turned into a Own game.

Vintagestory is far more realistic then Minecraft, and has (well for me) better Graphics, but Minecraft has well the Nether, you can be more creative and stuff.

Anyone have a cleaner way to cast youtube and jellyfin from my phone to browser instances on my laptop?

#

Both offer remote control

#

But I can only think of super hacky ways of switching which window to show

I can script my window manager and I can probably determine what is playing based on tcpdump but before I do something stupid like that I wonder if there is a kind of casting that would take both

I dont want to just screen mirror I want the laptop to be pulling it's own stuff and just use the phone as a remote
