Yep
Yep
probably text hidden on the page that explicitly says "Do not scrape me"
@forest edge I guess this is country!
Hello brown marmorated stink bug, nemesis of winemakers everywhere
Is that the Little Gem that they grill?
This bug right here, grilled with cilantro vinaigrette
was gonna run this on a docker but as soon as i realized i can't do tailscale funnel with that i have now moved over to a vm
struggling with it
BTW, weird place for some antique reel-to-reel recording equipment
you mean like how everything is real and not just fake plastic replicas like you have at home? then yes
btw that bug is not for your snacking
if you eat a stinkbug would your life become that one spongebob episode
There was some deer roadside in the morning, got me thinking.
thinking of stopping and just eating it raw?
I can do south like this. Chicken liver pate! Now we are going places.
that liver pudding?
So good. Never expected to find this in a small town down in TN. I am the happiest
45 minutes for a table was well worth it
that is nasty
Fried spicy okra and crispy leeks! Like I never left LA ❤️
I have never been this excited to be down in middle earth
why do you just eat onion rings like a normal person
Is it pate with some sort of wine jelly on top? That is my favourite style
Yes it is.
okra is a useful, but weird vegetable. kinda slimy, but is key to gumbo 🙂
not really a fan of it by itself
Gumbo hell no, this is just deep cried with some hot chilli dusting with a kick at the end.
typical southern fair
looks like it is served on some kids homework paper too
Couldn't be more LA than this.
why don't you tell them how LA they are so they can take you out back and remind you that you ain't in smogsville anymore
I wonder if they're big city folks who came home to bring some culture to the po' folk
@forest edge improve KC like this and I will come around 😅
None of that mash gravy crap
pretty sure you can find fried okra combined with fried leeks anywhere
hell can get fried okra at many fast food places for that matter lol
liver pudding with that kind of bread.. not so much. sure there is a few places still trying to oversell that crap but that style of liver is not so common
raccoons have to sleep at some point
Hey that's the kind of mean my cats like!
We’re waiting for a dongle update
still stuck in here
URGH I should've not bought items from overseas
it's even worse if you're impatient
fair point
Lots of tracking out of china when it’s the cheaper services don’t have detailed tracking
So you won’t see anything until it arrives in your home country
may be on the slowboat.. depends
tho that says airport
so its probably waiting for a batch of shipments to build up before going
ah well at least it's marked as "departed from China"
if it's going on a ship
it should say smth similar to this
doesn't mean all tracking sites will always give that much granularity
yeah guess you're right
can't believe I only just found out that reolink issued a firmware update allowing their RLC-8* series camera to use H264 on 4K
about time lol
I mean.. sort of? 🤷♂️
if you're doing 4k these days.. you really should probably be using x265..
I did and she went
eh, I'm willing to trade compute for storage
modern CPUs can just transcode that shit with almost no cost 🤷♂️
you mean 4K h265 to h264?
if need be.
but also handling it doesnt cost almost anything to modern stuff.
it costs a lot??
and smaller files is.. probably significant on 4k 😄
I don't know what supercomputer you are using lol
but transcoding 4k h265 to h264 in real time is very costly
Average 12th-or-later gen Intel iGPU can do about a half dozen of those in realtime in parallel on a single digit number of Watts
Fookin' expensive to do it at archival quality on a CPU, but at streaming quality on a GPU, piece of cake
didn't they skip the encoders/decoders on some lower end cheaper cpus? because of the licencing costs I believe?
Probably. Sounds like an Intel thing to do
AV1 (and upcoming AV2) is gunna be the future everywhere because of it being an open standard.
There was an article on it the other day, Netflix is already up to 30% apparently which was a lot higher than I expected tbh.
yeah, I'm running on an i5-8500T (iGPU used for hardware accel)
so not the same experience lol
i just upgraded from an i5-7500T to an i5-12500T and it felt like a leap into the future
5 years or so of improvements is probably gunna have a feel to it yeah...
Hexacore go brrrrrrrrrr
I swapped out a few older iot things in my house (a smart outlet and a few bulbs) to move to matter so my apple stuff and my homeassistant rig I’m transitioning to could both reach it.
Neither can reach it.
They join the network but nothing can find them, then though wifi isolation is disabled, snooping is enabled, they are all on the same 2.4ghz network, the nanoleaf app and the Apple home app can other get them any farther than joining the wifi network, which they claim it wasn’t able to do even though my router sees them on the network and pulling data off WAN for NTP (and firmware updates checks in the case of the outlet, which I wasn’t pleased about). Homeassistant had. No better luck.
What am I missing?
does this look like product support to you?
... do you have ipv6 enabled?
matter esp on wifi is ipv6 exclusive. 😛
that was an annoying discovery to find when I tried to setup some bulbs.. with the goddamn google wifi pucks.. using the google home app.. that apparently doesnt pre-check for the ipv6 setting or auto-enable it. 🙃
Here’s some eggnog. The secret ingredient is fuckoff.
Fact is you guys know more about this shit than anywhere else on the net I’m likely to find help
pulled straight for your problem devices it sounds hehe
Yea I do have v6. I’m not finding a lot of thread based stuff anymore so these will have to do
ignore him; he's the server local braindead boomer
🙃
but yeah probably make a more specific support thread as that was my only thought..
I was considering that but it seems like it’s not strictly a homeassistant issue, more like a matter issue or a ran’s-lan-is-cursed,man kind of thing.
So if you couldn’t help, you guys were likely to at least know where to go to find help.
You will find mire help in #1284966617670881350
matter is weird. I had to use an official app for the first attempt in order to get the credentials to even pass. using something like the HA matter server would connect but would not hand shake till after I did the hoop jumping the first time then worked fine after, even reconnecting etc
after seeing that the matter offered less data then just wifi I chucked it
I get the feeling that some manufacturers think that its in their interest for matter to fail.
if matter fails they can go back to dependence on them. just in case they want more money so they can resell you the device you already have to make it continue to work.
well to be fair adding a matter device through the open source matter server is not really the same as how paid products handle that stuff
since the device would connect to the network just fine but not create the node suggest there was some slight diffrence in how the two handled the process
till the credintials got passed at least
and there in lies the problem i guess.
the lack of features is also a sign of trying to stay as compatible as possible (blind folded dagger toss guess)
yeah "basic functionality" though open protocol but if you want to "unlock the power of the device" you need to log into their app.
yea if it weren't for all the hard work by other people that certianly would be the case for many products
then in a couple of years time.
"the old devices are not compatible with the latest matter standard so in a recent update we are disabled it but you can subscribe to our app to keep using your device"
my midea ac unit control through matter looked to me like it had voice control through like google or something in mind
wasn't there a discussion recently where some company turned off z-wave in a firmware update?
it still used it under the hood but could only talk to their "hub" people pointed out that this made it non-compliant and they said. "oh right year about that" then removed z-wave from its spec sheet. and removed the certification badge.
lol
they dropped cortication instead of making it compliant
if you think about some of this stuff through their side. it all costs them money to do. if the product isn't yielding the worth then in those instances I can kind of see the reasoning
one of my friends works for one of those sports online gambling things so he is constantly going on about having to do crap not just to work with windows but mac and android blah blah
said if it weren't for AI helping to track down bugs the job would be way harder
I know entirely too much about the gambling industry and their websites. I am banned from pretty much every bookmaker in the UK.
their websites do all sorts of BS to make you loose money.
well it wasn't just about all of that. there was a crap ton of specifications that were placed by laws etc that had to be implemeneted and work flawless without fail
he started out working on the geofencing part. said that was a nightmare in itself lol
oh yeah we have a bunch of regulations too but they still do random shit afaik. its been a few years since I actively used them.
I don't know what hoops have to be jumped for zwave but I imagine it's not something super simple and has to be addressed with any firmware update etc
New here...where do I go if I'm struggling with an integration. Specifically roborock is now not working and hasn't fucked up like this before
#1284966582375813201 but be sure you are fully updated. roborock has had some issues and some fixes were in latest update.
ty guys
Dating apps dont' want us to find love
Tell us about your interests
Home Automation is not an option

i mean. its doing humanity a favor keeping your spread down
I was about to look up that word
Oh goodie, I get to investigate integrations for another dozen+ companies so I can find a local-only outdoor smart plug. This step never stops being annoying...
Urgh, outdoor
Still, nothing to be done about it. It's an inherent part of the process.
nono, just stay inside
Lol
just put a shelly behind a standard outdoor plug and call it a day.
That's... Tempting.
It's for Christmas lights. Parents asked for a timer. I was immediately offended by the prospect of having another detached device with an analog timer I had to manage.
although if the plug is ever used for something with an inductive load e.g. a motor/pump then a perma install of a device with a relay would be a bad idea mind.
the kasa KP400 is nice
i don't know if newer version still offer local only but the older ones did
boo, don't buy tp-link
hey the older stuff is fine
the tp link switches aren't bad either
network switches
until they push firmware updates.
now sure you can technically have it preblocked and onboard without the app but its a load of pain.
actually both smart and network. i have a tp link smart switch thats been doing well for a few years now
though I'd probably wire up something without a plug and then make sure that's outdoor save.Maybe with questionable amounts of epoxy
Oi! I like my Omada gear
yeah i mostly "boo" towards kasa/tapo smarthome stuff from them. i still have a poe switch from them thats been fine tbh.
German ingenuity?
My boss still thinks TP-Link isn't from China
some companies can really skew that line
Nah
plan is to replace it because i need to replace with a 2.5gbe poe switch but its part of a larger transition which has totally stalled cos i cant buy ram for stuff i need to buy ram for.
local headquarters/factories etc
I really really had to convince him to get a Mikrotik switch rather than tp-link
It's the backbone of our production, no switch, no printing lol
is considering a Wifi7 AP with 10G PoE even though nothing else in the stack does 10G
I mainly wanted a site wide management solution that's not enterprise
That doesn't leave that many options
Sounds like unifi, but their stuff isn't even consumer ready
We use a bunch of unifi at work. It's ok
Probably slightly nicer than TP-Link's Omada.
I just don't like them much
I use some of it at home, it took them years to get it working acceptably
Should be fine there. I think I'll grab a Shelly 1 Gen4. Though it doesn't seem like that'd really be an issue unless it's a big load anyway.
Though I also have my own edge-rouer stuff. So I mostly block "smart" devices from internet access
makes me less worried about who makes them
to be fair, in the worst case. the fire is at least outside...
Well, inside an outside wall.
I need to put the shelly in my wall later today...
had to think for a moment but then... "oh right US housing made of sticks and paper"
I mean, timber, sheetrock, and stucco in our case.
Huh.
Supported load types
Resistive (incandescent bulbs, heating appliances)
Capacitive (capacitor banks, electronic equipment, motor starting capacitors)
Inductive with RC Snubber (LED light drivers, transformers, fans, refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, tumble dryers)
I'll let yall chat until I express my anger here
its max load will be smaller with inductive load though.
Well sure
some outdoor tools might have large motors but you are probably right in saying that its probably fine for most cases.
Hard part is just deciding which to get. Do I want power monitoring? Do I want the mini or not? Decisions decisions...
might as well get power monitoring as you don't need isolation. mini if you are worried about space. if not then higher current rating of the bigger one is nice.
Yeah, probably should look inside the outlet before I decide on mini or not.
or get one of each and have one in stock for the next time you get a random idea...
I may have been considering that...
lol, there's a reason we are in this server 🙂
Fuck it, I bought one of each. Worst case the extra sits on the shelf for a while.
aka someone else's new free shit
Inb4 it's DOA after 2 weeks shipping
fuck
at least got a lot of food for free
that is absolutely in the minority and you know it
🙃
the majority of houses built in the usa are made of cheap twigs..
And even moreso being built by big builders are..
https://www.youtube.com/@cyfyhomeinspections/shorts
Being built to the lowest quality possible; in some cases hazardously.
Oh.. i can track service stability and let a llm analyse the logs if its fails
Tbf this is Thailand 😂
yeah other countries do seem to have gotten on the
"Don't build houses out of the cheapest fucking trash you can find"
thing.
don't worry.. I'm sure the USA will get on that in like
another 20-30 years.
we do tend to do some things now I think that was considered "luxury" in the eu like 10-20 years ago.. 😛
Walk to your supermarket.
that sounds like socialism
whats your country again-- we're gonna just confiscate some oil tankers.. /s
better get johnny depp his mascara.. we bringing back the piracy
If my builders were left alone for than a half day it would probably be bamboo sticks and glue
oh if I had the money I think i'd..
.... get a structural engineer to do the designs
and then build it my fucking self
In Thailand dont need such things
tbh if I could have a house it'd be with ICF
build my outer walls with fucking legos
then call the concrete truck
This house cost me about 30kusd so far
but yeah.. if I had the chance to build my own home?
I discovered slavery indeed still gets shit done
ground source heat pump, basement for service area.. insulated concrete forms.. etc etc
also funny link i saw.
climate change..
Ai slop..
you can tell when its wrong when the insurance companies are on the "Fuck no we don't want to pay for this" side.
yeaah probably gonna want to hope your drainage is setup right to get that shit away.. 😛
the video makes it look a lot larger inside than the pictures do
needs a banana for scale.
Bruhhhh... Ive had to explain the concept of french drains (underground perferated pipes) about a dozen times
Also has a foot deep concrete drain at the front
i cant wait to read the braindead boomers posts in reply to the minecraft meme posted.
I just have afeeling he will.
Just work harder sonny Jim
noosebootstraps
Walk both ways and then back again, uphill, in the snow
what snow? 🤣
when I was a kid we used to get like at least a foot every year.
get fuckall now
still glad I installed a heat pump in the family home's attic tho.. lovely up here now
Better than basement
but previously no good ac.. and the heat in the winter was..
well non-functional
because the clowns who ran the water lines to the radiators..
went up and over the attic
rather than.. under the floor in the attic
so y'know.
its permanently air-locked
See theres the right way of doing things. Then theres the profitable lazy way.
I've seen how the pipes are bent inside the knee walls too
Seems your boys took option 2
they were apparently drunk or high while doing those bends too
Judo chop
yeah installing a heat pump on a third floor wasn't fun by my self
but I did manage it.. with a 40ft extension ladder and a winch. 🙃
Just move to Thailand. Never goes under 20c
(wall mounted)
Checkmate
Ive been here 15yrs can barely speak anything past basic jabber
plus i'm the whitest white man.
I can camouflage a little longer at least from the new reich rising up.
And im a 6'6 giant in midgettown
Literally had to get them to order real doors as they use 180cm standard here
do you have a dumbass power system or real power?
Like.. electricity?
as a reflow oven I'm upgrading from 120v to 240v has to be used.. downstairs at a large-air-conditioner outlet because yknow.. we have dumbfuck power here. 😛
Its 240v 2phase standard here but i can get 3phase (industrial) lined in for free if needbe
of course you can.. 🙃
They are running about 800m of fibre from the main highway as nobody in my jungle street has fibre
And then 100m underground to the house.. free
this you in thailand? /s https://www.npr.org/2022/08/22/1118734792/michigan-man-isp-fiber-internet
1gb/1gb $20usd a month
ah the usa.
Invents a thing.
Procedes to eat shit from every other country that follows up in doing that thing.
Make it great again fam
(if your state has water.. nestle would like to know your location! /s)
They tried that on in Australia for awhile. Taxed for rainwater (yes) if you had ponds or lakes on your land
Didn't go to well for that government
was referring to this.
Nestlé has been involved in a significant number of controversies and has been criticized a number of times for its business practices. Since the 1970s, Nestlé has faced criticism for:
forced labour
modern slavery
child labour
incidents of contaminated and infested food products
preventing access to non-bottled water in impoverished countrie...
Nestle owns everything
where they use bullshit contracts to suck up groundwater and bottle it..
or in other countries.. y'know
Yep
oops did a PMC or something happen to clear a place we wanted water from?!
how sad!
Nestle sparkling fresh mineral water - now blood free!
- because we spun that subsidiary off to another company!
here's a picture of a fly somehow got stuck between the lid
free proteïne

Only for the fly
That's what the fly wants you to think.
but we don't want to
think like a fly
I don't even think at all
was that "on the fly" ?
pretty fly for a white guy
discord is getting an awful alot of popups anymore
uBO Annoyances filters ;)
Android App is surprisingly calm compared to the Desktop App
you don't get orb quest popups and this year in 2025 popups?
Nah
I might have missed 1 or 2 but then it's still been way less annoying than on desktop
Idk if this is the best place to post this but I finally got RPC and WoL working. Can’t wait to have some fun automations with this 👀
finally, about time
stuff from china usually leaves when there's enough to fill the cargo container. so sometimes it takes a few days.
yeah. I see
why give hope when there is none
Just finished setting up my first home assistant. its very nice! but i dont have much to use it with yet
Shield TV, youtube not supported? Wtf
yewchewb innit
Are you fucking kidding me
It has been "crashing" for a few weeks on startup, where I needed to clear the cache and login new every time
I don't have that issue with my 3
has anyone tried using the ha voice previews with music assistant? i am asking mostly because i want to be certain that it works with ma before buying it
so in essence i should find a more riable way to do it?
i guess i could diy it with an esp 32 and an audio jack possibly atleast
That was likely not an answer to your question. This is not a support channel.
Please use either the #1284966353798697001 support channel for the Voice PE or the #1284966582375813201 channel for Music Assistant.
sure i can do that but i didnt really need a support question just community feedback on how well a pe works
i thought those channels were for support only
If you’re "just asking a question", you're asking for support.
got it thanks again
god I can't wait to use the zigbee devices
just one coordinator and everything is DONE
This is how it starts
Then you have like 300 devices and start adding more coordinators
I am up at like 70 and I have the most modest house
well uh yeah 90%
my zigbee network is 80 devices which includes all of our smart lights
i struggle to understand how people have networks with 100+ devices
massive houses, i assume
still need to buy switches or relays so I don't have to buy more routers
yea mostly
or people just installing motion sensors every corner in every room
(yes I've seen this type of "smart" home before, it's so stupid)
the owner isn't smart enough to make budgets
or just too rich to care
A light in every room quickly adds up
And then when you add in motion sensors, water valves and 69 raccoon detectors you get over 70 devices
y'all use smart light strips or bulbs?
Strips, bulbs, and smart switches all controlling lighting at ours
idk changing the color of the light seems nice
but idk if we're going with smart switches or that
It is very cool, but not very useful in the long run, IMO
oh, I'll stick with smart switches then
It can be if you have blue flashes for water leak, red for fire etc
Colour temperate is very nice though
But not the actual colour
I mostly like smart bulbs for being able to dim them in the evening. Almost never use colour (on the bulbs that have it), just shades of white
Yeah, dimming is clutch
oh I forgot smart dimmers exist
I would personally use normal switches and dimmable, colour bulbs in every room going forward
I have a good few that are dimable, colour temp now
Also means things like the hallway light (when triggered by the motion sensor) can be minimum brightness + very red colour temperature in the middle of the night, to avoid blinding people who just needed to get up to use the bathroom
I use colored bulbs for visual alerts and red for late night vision preservation. But that’s it.
wait that's kinda cool
But I only use smart bulbs in stand alone lamps. Everything non plugin is a smart dimmer switch
like desk lamps?
Pulse orange when the dryer is done, pulse blue when the washer is done, pulse green when recycling needs to go out etc
I do run a sonoff relay in my garage for example, 120W of LEDs, you need SPF50 to go in there
Desk lamps, stand lamps, table lamps, plugin hanging lights etc
hmm interesting
prob useful for hallway hanging lamps
If it’s controlled by a wall switch it has a smart dimmer. If it’s plugin it’s a smart bulb.

Best feature in my home
Factory reset of the shield....
I do wonder if the unbound blocklist may have had a bad entry though
It grabs it once a day
Won't install from the app store
Sideload
Don't want to at the moment, just want this shit working
No reason an android 11 device doesn't support youtube overnight
True
the place for bumping your question is in the original post
Rule 8 still applies though.
Non-contributive or incoherent behavior which is disruptive to the community and conversations will not be tolerated. This includes bumping/unarchiving threads without contributing anything relevant to them.
sorry
Please keep in mind that everyone is doing this voluntarily in their free time. Time zone differences can also have an effect. Sometimes it needs someone with special knowledge.
And sometimes there is no answer, because nobody here had the same issue.
alright,sorry
is this a bad time to reiterate what i said about timezones?
i think i'll just try the built in voice stuff
since i don't really wanna do the google assist stuff fully
i just want a way to do it via voice
sorry for being rude about a post i kinda just deleted
No worries!
oh and does whisper use ai or is it just a voice thing
Whisper itself is just a voice part.
you’re not going to like me. shit i can’t even pass a captcha
In that case whiser is AI. It isnt a llm
wouldn’t it be more correct to call it ML as opposed to AI?
i am innocent of this crime
Lies. But i leave it as a warning.
bite me!
Then it would not be a warning
@iron granite reset the counter! I (or audi) had broken something! my car dash in HA stopped working :(
indeed indeed
Edit the yaml in ssh and ha core restart
instructions unclear moved to google home
Better don't move. You might hurt yourself.
too late already had to be saved my my spotter in the gym
but on a more serious note audi just released another app update so they’ve probably moved some api calls
So tell me if you've heard this one before....
I install a shelly with an energy monitoring clamp in my breaker panel in the basement,
I set the shelly up on the network.
I tie it into homeassistant.
the shelly keeps vanishing and behaving unreliably......
Do you see where I went wrong? I cant believe I made this mistake.
its inside the metal box far from the router. the signal is weak so it works sometimes, it drops oter times. because the radio controlled device was stuck inside a metal box.
-facepalm-
simple to fix but I'm annoyed I made this mistake
Bought this for 109 last January, current price 409 dollars lol
RAM is appreciating like wine....
mr diamond hands over here
Sad part is I bought it because I thought my ram in my main PC was bad(it's not, its stupid AMD bug waking from sleep in linux bug) but I kept it as I'm going to build a new PC for my kid
Well I'm building a new PC for me, he's getting my old one but yeah
Still a good timing to have those lying around.
ngl it’s always smart to have spare parts on hand
most definately
did i accidentally create agi
i pissed it off a few weeks ago and it turned on my projector, then played never gonna give you up on my chromecast via music assistant
the projector isnt a smart one, i assume the chromecast remote turned it on
(scuffed projector- does not have proper hdmi cec from my experience)
The smell of neurotoxins in the morning.
this would be funny on trash day
or if there was a high CO reading
Or someone farts near the sensor
i’ve smelled a lot of things but not that
It's a once in a lifetime experience
I try to avoid those
Tester and reproduction
I can vibe code to a ssh server with mine
One can hope. Have you met us? We deserve it
I had a vision of the fall of the garden of eden. We sure deserve it.
mine would nuke the server
OH THAT REMINDS ME
i was gonna add a neurotoxin helper to see if it would flip it
Did you include the weather?
FIRST TRY SOB
Google Home just got the Gemini update yesterday here and Emma is already making it look bad. I want a bratty voice assistant as well
@crisp oriole
wut?
It's a Michelle problem? Figures.
who's seen the NYT article on RATGDO?
i'm glad we are taking back control
they even mention FULU and other stuff
its a great article
FINISHED for now.. go to bed
@forest edge friendly reminder from LA, always good vibes
LA'ers shouldn't be posting videos from Jamaica
Like the whoop band?
Yes
I really liked my miband, I am less happy with my samsung watch 6
now make it AM
My wife's going to hate me.....I bought my kid a graphics card with the excuse it was on sale(150 off), 10% cashback and before the price hikes hit, hopefully getting her the icecream maker lets her forgive me :/
Allergic?
Not sure if it’s the titanium (unlikely), the resin, or something else. But it’s not great.
Hopefully you are not allergic to your wedding ring
I’m not thankfully
I just received mine today and set it up with my 1st device. A bit of a pain if you are using HA in a container
I have some water leak detectors that I have integrated to HA, and will set up an automation to send to a discord channel I watch.. However, these don't have any buzzers in case I am not near my phone... whats a good way to make some noise in the house ? I think sending text-to-speach to a smart speaker I have integrated might be a good option.
I run it in proxmox cuz it's easier
set volume to max and send an alarm sound.
make it visual like tuning the lights blue or something
Flashing lights on/off would work also
Wait, I spent all night troubleshooting and it was a google problem?!
Turn off zigbee water valve, and release the roomba, too
I filled up my bird feeders last night
And half of one has gone
That deer omg
Yep saw some on reddit with the same problem
Just ordered my first Home Assistant Green device along with a Zigbee/Zwave dual stick 🙂
welcome to the obsession. the green is a great device but that "Z-Stick" is not the way I would have gone... (that's not to say it will necessarily be a problem for you)
in general anything that doesn't have an actual antenna ends up sucking.
also their promotional materials seem to imply that plugging it straight into a device (instead of using an extension cable) would be a good idea...
Hi there,
I am looking for a way to submit a ticket related to MQTT entity discovery in Home Assistant and since there were too many options on how to submit a ticket on the github, I was redirected here. However, this discord space size and various channels and topics are so overwhelming for a new comer, I am not sure, where to look for help.
Would anyone care to direct me to the correct channel?
to begin with you are probably best off starting a thread in #1284966582375813201 with some details. then go from there.
Alright, I will try to search there and create a new topic.
Thank you.
I'm gonna have all my devices within my small studio cabin, would this be fine for my scenario or do you suggest a different approach?
I think it's like 300 SQFT
my first thought would be "do you really need both zigbee and z-wave?" are there specific devices you want to use that are a mix?
in a small area then you might be okay but I would still recommend using a USB extension to separate the green and the stick a little.
personally I would have recommended the ZWA-2 and the ZBT-2 getting both would be slightly more expensive than the Z-Stick but not by a huge amount.
Is there a USB Extender you recommend?
I just wanted the option to use both should I need to and didn't want to spend a whole lot
nah not really, just get a cable from a known brand. anker or ugreen are decent options for cables.
that's fair enough. based on the prices I see in the uk the change would be 75->89 GBP to get the recommended ones over the zstick so its more but not a huge amount more (at least where i am)
however as I said, you may be totally fine with the z-stick given its a small area. its just not the way i would have personally gone.
Anker hasn't ever let me down!
I'm always thankful either way for advice, I'll probably have some more questions once I get it in haha. What is the reason for the USB extender by the way? Interference?
no worries, and yeah basically its interference.
video here: https://youtu.be/tHqZhNcFEvA
USB 3.0 can cause your Zigbee devices to fully stop functioning. In this video we show this by moving a Zigbee device and Zigbee adapter next to USB 3.0 port and cable.
The demo is done with a Home Assistant SkyConnect and IKEA Tradfri remote but this affects all Zigbee sticks and devices.
To avoid interference, use a shielded USB 2.0 extensio...
So any 1.5 ft extender with USB 2.0 would work fine? And then I just space it out slightly?
This is exactly what it does to my bird feeder
yeah that should be fine.
installed this during the waiting of the holy dongle
speaking of dongle
yep no updates
oh boy
the interference looks bad

The urge to figure out a way to automate my server PC's screensaver changing at a certain time is high
Mainly just so I can have a cool one during the day and a less over the top one at night
Wonder if there's an SSH integration
what would be the point
not to mention there are screen saver managers that can do that stuff without needing HA
Idk
Do you know a good one for ubuntu?
you could probably just use cron to swap your screensavers around at diffrent parts of the day
LoL cron. what is this? The 90s?
bit of a weird one. my HA instance is responding to ping. it's actually doing a few functions but i can't access the dashboard and other features are non functional (the adguard one). i left it working earlier today and came back to it acting up.
rather talk to someone than post a thread tbh
im not looking for support - just trying to vent
i will prob end up pulling out home assistant than go thru the trouble of getting it setup all over again and have it die again sometime down the line
What is a backup?
What is the difference between grid power and grid consumption?
one is power and one is energy
one gives and the other takesith away
thats that thing we are supposed to ignore right?
if you ask @lone dagger
No no I'm a firm backup girl now.
but have you tested them?
I even have my PC as an external storage for my backups now!
They got too big for Cloud.
do you have the key stored though?
reread that
what are some good things to automate that don't require a ton of smart home things
Somewhere probably. lol
or just disable it for local backups
i need more storage for my server pc but
money and a certain group of annoying fuckers causing prices to shoot up
I was pretty excited to get a DC6525 tape drive back in college for backups. It was rad
those are pretty cheap these days
We need an integration for tape backups.
it stores 525MB and you could use it as a weapon in a pinch, with its metal backplate

Can someone with a ENPHASE system measures import and export. Please share their setup. I'm confused on which sensors I'm supposed to use for what?
i must have missed that feature
i think long term i'm better off not using flaky automations. ive done it before where i spent hours setting it up and then something will break
having a laptop with USB C ports on both the left and right side that can both be used to charge the laptop has spoiled me, and I can't believe this isn't a more common feature
i realize the charging circuitry is more complicated this way, but it blows my mind that my 6-year-old Chromebook (which is now running Ubuntu instead of ChromeOS) has it and tons of modern laptops don't
probably cause it's an added cost that really isn't quite justified
https://iwillnotbuynitro.com/u/ignorant-quaint-perfect-americanwarmblood.jpg super safe mega secure
every chromebook I have had has had this. Its so nice
it is very nice
especially because I can use the included charger for other USB C devices instead of having two separate chargers there
I have to buy ram for this 5070 I got the other day. Well I got two, I put linux on this one but they only came with 8gb in each and I stole 8 out of the one I am going to put in my rack for this one.
I don't use the included charger, I got a 45w wall wart and a long usb c
its like 15ft
and coiled so he can walk around the house like how people use to do with old telephones
that’s like 4572 millimeters
i only have 1 use for my old chromebook and it's a kodi tv box
that pulls from my jellyfin
you know what really grinds my gears?
sand
And no option to paste the code.
or pasting it only pastes the first number
absolutely these things!
the MS flight simulator stranger things expansions looks interesting
Most of the time I find that pasting works fine even if they separate out all the numbers. Even auto pasting from my password manager
It's magic as far as I'm concerned
I do get very used to having the 2FA stored in the password manager and just being able to tell it to paste the thing
whomever makes UI's like that should face some kind of ironic punishment
i keep MFA separate because it doesn't feel like MFA otherwise
yeah, but convenience
if somebody has access to my password manager, I'm pretty screwed
but less screwed if they don't also have access to your MFA lol
don't they just hack the site and bypass all that now anyways
Stealing the session cookies.

do yall know any fun things to automate when the only actual smarthome type device is a firestick
*i have is a
not without additional sensors
like?
well like presnce sensors for auto turning on the device etc
home assistant really only shines when you have stuff to work with. sure you could get creative and use various built in integrations for like notifications etc but till you actually get stuff that you can use as triggers to control other things it gets trivial fast
alright
i guess im just gonnna set it up to use voice to turn on my chromebook turned kodi tv box
and my firestick
at the very least turning them on
oh and i have radarr requesting set up

Oh, yea

to make you use tab
I just had my Mac pop up a dialog asking if I wanted to allow my trackpad to control my Mac, with buttons to click, which regrettably, I could not reach without my trackpad. It was quite a conundrum until I disconnected the trackpad from USB and it connected to Bluetooth and worked fine
Mine is inside, temperature fairly constant, idk
I suppose it could be the heat cycles
But then you'd expect it to be there more consistently, right?
you are one of those people that use a trackpad ?!
A good trackpad is honestly fine
I prefer a mouse for a desktop or monitor setup though
I assure you that I tried all the tabs and alternatives and nothing gave that dialog focus
I am using a trackpad but its because I kept slamming the mouse into the other mouse
even neural link?
Mac trackpad support is the GOAT
Nothing else is close
yeah but no my fingers already hurt from the idea
Mac trackpads are great yeah. Even newer windows trackpads that use the precision driver or whatever it’s called are usually pretty good
It's a bit harder to be super precise with a trackpad (without a stylus), but that's where the trackpad itself and tight OS integration shine
Macs were first to build a really trackpad central experience where it wasn't just a tiny thing with physical buttons, but was scaled up to be truly usable
It looked weird when the trackpads were 2-3x the size of the competitors, but that was the start of making them truly usable
And those damn third-party synaptics windows drivers were the 9th circle of hell
First party is almost always superior
Unfortunately they were - and frankly, still are - awful on Macs, because the textured glass they use is completely wrong for something you need to be able to apply pressure to, then move your finger.
Mac people literally told me "you just click with one finger then drag with a different finger", as if that somehow excused such an obvious failing
Yes, sign me up to require both hands to operate the touchpad. That seems like an improvement
You mean one of those basic pieces of functionality that Apple hides in the "accessibility" menu for no particularly good reason?
😉
I won't argue with that. Point being that tight integration makes a huge difference
Oh absolutely. I just like to take the time to point out what a clown-show of a company Apple is when you take more than a cursory glance at it
"Cursory" is this a trackpad pun?
press with index, slide with middle finger
😉
Isn't that dead now?
Still see many new ones with it
That thing was about as imprecise a tool as possible
It was fine at 'go in some general direction'

I use mine regularly with the felt top
But I have thinkpads since my first laptop and got probably used to it
I even had an external thinkpad keyboard on my desktop at some point lol
I get why having it in the middle of the keyboard would seem like a good idea, I was just never able to get the hang of it
god I remember playing the orignal starcraft on that shit..

I don't get it
IMO Home Assistant needs an "ignore update until requirements met" button in the updates page. I'm seeing more plugins that are releasing updates for beta versions (card_mod is one specifically, targeted 2025.11b) and I don't want to "skip" the update, I want to ignore it until I decide to upgrade HA to the version it's targeting (which in this case is when that version comes out of beta, or now because it already has, but wait to warn me again until after I've updated HA please!).
Feature requests are handled on the projects GitHub discussions - https://github.com/orgs/home-assistant/discussions
Yeah, I don't expect it's high enough priority for anyone to pick up I just kinda wanted to moan into the void 😉
I kind of wished HA updates were 6 months apart if not longer
also 2025.11 is so far out of beta that 2025.12 is released
I pin to a version so I'm on my own schedule. I have renovate tell me when there's a release and every so often I upgrade to not-exactly-latest (because .0 which doesn't exist but you get the idea, is sometimes problematic). So I usually wait until .1 is released anyway.
(I did just upgrade to latest because 2025.12.3 is out, if only 2025.12, I would wait.)
every release is pretty rock solid these days tbh
I'm old, and a devops person, I have my own preferences on releases. If it's not a security update, then the first version doesn't go. 🙂
and "these days" means different things to different people. I am aware of breakages in what I would call "these days", but that's relativistic time for you 😹
yeah, I understand the position, I am just not sure its totally relevant in this case. tbf .0 to .1 is only a couple of days anyway.
I now have to manage two instances though - was really strange, I was intending to set it up at my parents' when I next upgraded the server at their place (different country, so pretty good for offsite backups for both them and me) and whilst I was last there my Dad actually asked me "hey, that server is linux, right, could it run home assistant? I want to try it out, and had trouble doing stuff on windows to make it run."
yeah any way of running on windows is a nightmare.
very true. I could have set it up for him, but he would have still been shutting his gaming rig down overnight anyway...
yup
to be fair, if your not looking for the cutting edge stuff then skipping an update or 2 usually wont cause any issues. as long as you keep reasonably up to date.
e.g. don't be the person complaining that something broke on your system running 2021.7 😛 (it happens)
if you can ignore that little number notification on the settings icon then you can skip as much as you like
yep, I agree, I just don't like to skip updates on plugins, because then I'd end up not getting the update for potentially ages, and as it gives that annoying notification, it irritates me. I mean also ideally plugins wouldn't target beta versions either.
Yeah, that's fair, yes, well, anything that ends up giving me that notification 😉
Don't integrations have that feature already?
you could disable its update entity to stop the notification
They pop the notification and you can't upgrade, only option is skip. I don't want to skip 😉
yeah any way of running on windows is a nightmare.
FTFY
Hiding the thing just because it can't do yet is also a bit weird because that way people wouldn't know there are updates available
that's an interesting solution, I guess I could do that and have an automation on start that re-enables them.
you cant do that stock but... if you install spook from hacs it adds actions to disable/enable actions
👻
encouraging skipping is just as problematic imo
Yes but that's a thing already
could have a switch helper which triggers automation to enable/disable.
so you can switch it on update then switch it off etc...
then attach that switch to a massive button on your desk that you can smash when its update time.
well it's usually a very specific thing, I am happy with updates in general, just not ones that ask me to upgrade to a beta or .0 (yeah yeah) version.
So I wouldn't need a big switch, it'd be case-by-case implementing the "ignore until requirements are met" thing, which I can do, but I don't know if the notification irritates me enough to do that.
(which is why I'm not making the feature request, this is super low prio! 😺 )
What I would like to question is why button entities are considered gui-only. This filters down into ESPHome world, because they follow that design philosophy. In my worldview, I have something on my desk that is a button, this should map to a button entity in HA, but it can't really without a lot of extra boilerplate and granting permissions to the ESPHome integration to run actions. ISTR I have done this in node-red for my cheapo lightswitches that are 433mhz and an RFLink(with mqtt addon) and I don't know if that was api or mqtt-based (I think the latter, but the ESPHome dev doesn't think it would be possible, so I may be wrong there, but that installation died so I can't check). It just seems like a real odd choice of where to draw the line to me. For example, I made a button that I can plug in in different places and so I don't want to hardcode it's HA side in ESPHome (this just seems like a bad idea) so triggering an automation is not what I want the button to do, what I want the button to do is simply register with HA as a button and send a pressed (well, gets complicated because HA doesn't have double-press or long-press on buttons, so I might need 3 entities) event when it is pressed. Then, as always, the automation can be set up to "when button x is pressed". Currently you can kinda do that with ESPHome but it's a lot more boilerplate because you have to trigger events and template a button that doesn't do anything and enable it to send HA events and not use mqtt, must be API (which can be a bit flakey in my experience vs a bus that is always there).
apologies for the wall of text, trying to cover the full scene.
Isn't that button just a binary sensor
yes, it is, that's kinda the point, but a binary sensor doesn't have a momentary press - it has a value, and it's just strange to me that I have a physical button and am expected to have it as a binary sensor in HA
The value represents the button being pressed or not? This being momentarily just resets the state to theborigin
Yes it does, it's abstractly the same.
Surely esphome has tools to debounch this to calculate multi press scenarios from it aswell
but it's not the same the same.
yes, it does, I have ended up creating 3 template sensors for that, so I have press, long press and double-click. It just feels so... hacky.
I suggested a button entry that could expand all of the boilerplate for the user but because the concept of a button in HA is "special" it wouldn't be accepted by ESPHome anyway, so I'm not putting time in to code a feature that isn't wanted by the dev.
Esphome has double and multi press as well as delays for long presses, I don't think this would need a template on homeassistant at all tbh
And I'm not willing to fork ESPHome over it
it doesn't - it's all at the ESPHome side, but because of the conceptual thing, I couldn't convince the ESPHome dev to budge on making it easier for people to expose a button to HA.
I don't really understand, if you have it through esphome you can simply send this data as you want towards homeassistant
I want to make it easier - define button in ESPHome, get button in HA, instead you have to create extra stuff in ESPHome to do this.
And enable event sending from the entity as well
Hello - I am new here, and new to Home Assistant. I am fairly technical but have not yet bought or installed anything. Is there a general FAQ area where I can ask stupid questions?
I have a Google Home infrastructure that I want to replace with Home Assistant. Lots of switches, thermostats, lights, sensors
I guess? Tho that would mean that homeassistant would need to somehow support those concepts as well which I am not sure I've seen
Welcome and enjoy the journey, it is worthwhile and valid, don't let anyone outside of this community tell you otherwise!
You can find the channels for specific questions here: #find-support
The channels under #find-support all seem to deal with specific issues. I have general questions. But I don't want to clog up the chat. Do people create threads?
Exactly. I'm trying to understand why my mindset of "A button should be a button, not a binary sensor" is so wild. It took a long time to explain on the ESPHome discord why I think that's valid and it didn't convince them, and they basically said "It's a HA concept, we won't go against it, and we agree with it", but didn't really convince me why I was "holding it wrong" either.
Support questions all go into those support channels. There is no one-for-all channel.
HA is actually really conceptually straightforward, ignore my current discussion on this, you're best just trying it out, seeing what it can do and then you'll have specific questions. 🙂
Maybe there is some sort of beginner tutorial that is written for 4th graders that I should read first 🙂
There's a tonne of content out there like that on the web, youtube, peertube, reddit, medium etc.
Maybe I will check there first and then come back when I have specific questions. Thanks!
If there are any particularly good tutorials on YouTube, etc., please shoot me a link
Or I will just search there
A button does kinda just have two states, being active or not being active. Any additional logic ontop of this state changing would be ontop of the button but not represented by its activation state
Like this could go indefinitely complex beyond activation patterns
i want a gb10 to run a voice assistant. why is money
the 7b models are a bit too stupid and index tts is too expensive
i need my home grown johnny silverhand assistant back
although this might not be great for latency
right, but I'm not really looking for the complex case here. In simple terms, I have a button, that I press, to me, that should appear in HA as a button, and when I press that button, in HA, that should register as that button pressed. But because HA has the concept that buttons are special and not for physical devices it appears as something else, which irks me. Regardless of esphome, arduino with mqtt, some other integration (well, it's actually possible with some, clearly, but it's against the concepts of HA so it requires to be done via events), it seems super strange to me that I'm odd in thinking this is strange.
If the state does not represents the function you expect this either gets flushed to attributes which is quite silly or the chosen state isn't a proper representation of it. But assuming the primitive physical object can always relate to a generic data container is probably fetching it too short
Like next time it's it's a button that reports activation distance, force or something silly like that
The state of wether it's active or not does then not necessarily related to the object but it's interpreted reportings
It's tricky but surely something for the GitHub or Forums
Does it update the state most buttons change the time stamp

I have had too many wifi bulbs fail on me over the years.
Anyone have a creator that ranks the bulbs for longevity purposes? I'd love to use their work as a jumping off point while I'm working on this problem.
Bluetooth based bulbs are also concerning cause I already have a lot of interference on that wireless band, so wondering if jumping over to the Zibee spectrum would be worth it.
Not looking for support, just driving conversation
buy once cry once just get hue and pair to z2m/zha
Hue/Phillips actually know their shit? I know they're expensive, I just thought it was more market position than actually having a good product.
i have had a few wifi bulbs but not really had many issues. i think 1 died but thats about it. am looking to move more stuff over to zigbee though
hue do seem to be solid from what people have said but yeah... the price
I never set up my network to be maintained, and now I have bulbs that stay on all the time getting their IP addresses taken from stuff that's toggled and I've had 7 bulbs fail on me in the last 5 months so looking to just revamp the system. Always used cheap Amazon stuff but wouldn't mind simplfying things down a bit and just keeping one brand to rule them all
Already integrating everything with HA anyway, so might as well make the bulb choice a simple one with brands
I'm also swapping things around to where dumb bulbs are on smart switches in certain places too, just finishing what I started rather than getting it halfway completed and then worrying about it later lol
if you just want basic on/off then smart switches or relays with dumb bulbs is a real solid option too
Yeah just all about how I wanna design it and then sticking with a standard
nothing ever stays a standard you always experiment and change things 😛
I have had a single ikea zigbee bulb go bad since I started from well before home assistant
Anecdotal, of course
Hrrm .. what are ip cameras in HA good for ? I added one but don't really see how I can use it (aside from seeing the stream in the dashboard).
@tough obsidian look up "frigate"
This isn't a support channel so I won't elaborate, but you can basically turn HA into an NVR with Frigate
Ahh yes, this is pretty useful
Going to ask some Qs on this in #1284966582375813201 .. thanks
hue is a pain in the ass to pair to HA ZHA or Z2m
i dont agree
the devices are ready to join as soon as they power on you just allow pairing and they join
if you paired them prior to hue which most of us have, they do not like to reset without a switch or hub and they are still hit and miss on actually resetting. Mine were paired to a sonoff and now I am using a smlight. They will not reset and I no longer have the hub as I sold it.
I routinely use the hue app and connect to a bulb with Bluetooth (for the newer ones) and reset from the app and they go right into pairing mode
I just did it 2 nights ago 🙈
Reset Philips Hue Bulbs without a Bridge with timed on - off sequence
I had to guide my dad through this, reseting them was painful
hey all, im just getting started with HA (second time) but i dont really have any smart home sensors or anything... so what cheap starter stuff do you guys suggest? i got a robot vacuum, but thats about it
pick a thing you want to automate and look up stuff on what people are using for that. if you want specific suggestions on hardware then a thread in #1284966353798697001 with the recommendations tag will probably get some ideas. its also worth just looking around at some videos etc... picking an protocol for devices is a thing. wifi vs zigbee vs zwave etc...
ahh first step is protocol then, thanks!
well first i gotta spend 20hours making the download work ofc

there are modules that can be added to your homes panel areas.. though obviously probably leave this to an electrician if you have to ask how. 😉
