#

No. I am officially "on the spectrum." ๐Ÿ˜

#

And autistic people tend to feel that phrases like "Aren't we all a little 'on the spectrum" or 'a little bit autistic.' " tend to normalize the struggles we face being autistic. ๐Ÿ˜

It's all right, not offended. Just wanted to mention that some of us autistic people DO tend to get a little persnickety about it. I tend to take the educational approach.

scenic radish
#

Understandable. I definitely didn't mean it in a disparaging way either

It's all good.

I understand the joke, because yes I can see a ton of neurodivergent dorks in this community, diagnosed or not.

My son and I are both autistic. We are both cool Yah_Cool

#

(He's 7)

grizzled gull
#

I've been starting to realize that the who AI thing may affect AUD folks more then neurotypically as AUD are more black and white and process thinkers

wild heron
#

This whole presidency affects me more than AI does. ๐Ÿ˜ Government shit nowadays stresses me out more than anything. ๐Ÿ˜

lone dagger
#

10 years later.

grizzled gull
#

I have 1 child who's AUD/ADHD, one who's just ADHD, its genetics. I think AUD and ADHD have both been around for a long time, but they were just the odd duck kids who never got married so genetics weren't passed on, as society has been more accepting of people who are different(not with standing current climates)

wild heron
#

Home automation happens to be one of my special interests... I love programming and seeing things I code work, gives me that dopamine hit that keeps me coming back.

lone dagger
wild heron
#

But yeah, my son being autistic as well, adds to the fact that it is genetic.

lone dagger
#

For example, you wouldn't (likely) label me hysterical (or maybe you would) in these days but you would have 150 years ago.

grizzled gull
#

Lol, bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

#

sorry couldn't help it

wild heron
#

Hell, when I was a child, I was screened for it and not diagnosed. (Despite being non-verbal until I was 4 and being in speech therapy until the 4th grade)...

#

I was a late diagnosis (diagnosed officially TWICE when I was 36 by two different people).

lone dagger
#

I couldn't even be diagnosed with Asperger's (which is now ASD level 1) because of my gender until a decade ago.

#

I never would have been identified as a child no matter what.

wild heron
#

Just goes to show in that much time, the screening process has changed, and proves that the increase in autism diagnoses isn't an increased prevalence, just improvements in how it is screened.

grizzled gull
lone dagger
#

(asperger's is autism - just make sure you know that)

#

(but we don't talk about asperger fuck that guy)

grizzled gull
#

It's 5 now, but I believe 4 removed the dx

wild heron
#

That is why it is commonly called "the spectrum" The ASD spectrum combined a whole bunch of autism-related diganoses into one combined term.

lone dagger
#

They just changed the name, not the diagnosis.

#

My diagnosis report even specifically calls it out.

wild heron
#

An umbrella term, as it were.

grizzled gull
#

I personally think that when I was a kid they just threw darts at a diagnosis list because I was different

ICQ was a cross-platform instant messaging (IM) and VoIP client founded in June 1996 by Yair Goldfinger, Sefi Vigiser, Amnon Amir, Arik Vardi, and Arik's father, Yossi Vardi. The name ICQ derives from the English phrase "I Seek You".[1] Originally developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis in 1996, the client was bought by AOL in 1998, and then by Mail.Ru Group (now VK) in 2010.[2]

grizzled gull

I guess Chamberlain is hellbent on reducing sales to folks who understand what they are buying. New security 3 openers will not work with Ratgdo, etc.

grizzled gull
haughty helm
#

Apparently the soldering and relay hack I used before the Ratgo existed will still work

#

Just hook up a dry contact relay between the button leads on a spare remote.

grizzled gull
#

why even use a remote? I just use the standard button, and put a zooz relay inbetween

haughty helm
#

It was easier to neatly tuck away out of sight with a remote

grizzled gull
#

only thing that it kinda messes up is the buttom illumination

haughty helm
#

On newer doors you have to make the connection at the button, which is often wall mounted without a nice place to put extra stuff.

grizzled gull
#

Are the buttons not hardwired anymore?

#

(its been a while since I installed a new one)

haughty helm
#

It is a proprietary protocol between the button and the opener.

grizzled gull
#

Seriously? wow they are scumbags

haughty helm
#

Ratgdo can speak ver. 2 of the protocol so works nicely mounted at the opener

grizzled gull
#

so its not just a momentary switch?

haughty helm
grizzled gull
#

I'll just buy the Menards offbrand garage door openers with no frills

haughty helm
grizzled gull
#

I do that with ceiling fans too, to avoid the built in controllers

haughty helm
grizzled gull
#

I just find ones that still have pull cords, any of those usually work, even if they have a built in controller

haughty helm
#

For our larger fans, I couldn't find anything without a remote

grizzled gull
#

I'll show you one that works, hold on ๐Ÿ™‚ its a biggum

haughty helm
#

Ready for the info!

#

#

grizzled gull
#

I believe this is the one we have

#

controller was removeable and my old hunter zigbee one slotted in the same place

#

the king of fans one, but I'm sure any other fan controller would fit too

#

I liked it because it didn't have integrated bulbs

#

well it has bulbs but replaceable

haughty helm
#

Would it work with an old school 3 speed switch? There are zwave/zigbee switches.

grizzled gull
#

It just has a wire for the fan a wire for the light and associated neutrals

haughty helm
#

Okay. So probably works

grizzled gull
#

so if old school 3 way just adjust the voltage then it should

haughty helm
#

Yeah, we have 3 wire to the fan. Light hot, fan hot, and neutral (and ground).

#

4 total

grizzled gull
#

my controller I'm using has 5 settings, low, medium, high, max, off(also has auto that adjusts the speed)

haughty helm
#

Looks like ours is 65" so basically the same size.

grizzled gull
#

So my ceiling fan switch is just on and off, the zigbee controller fits in the fan itself between what comes out the wall and the lights/fan

#

if your house is more modern and wired with a 14-3 then you got it easy and could just use a wall switch and connect directly to the fan

#

hmmm that doesn't look like it does dimming

#

Have you guys tried the new Google Weather integration yet? Itโ€™s pretty neat. I am though getting an Ecowitt Witboy for Christmas so it will be local.

wild heron
#

Nah, I am using the weatheralerts integration that provides alerts from the NWS though.

#

(Although, I should fork it and provide updated code since it has sensors that will break with the 2026.6 update)

#

I went into the packages, found the weatheralerts.yaml file and edited the sensors in there so it is good for that.

#

But one of my main automations that I am proud of is my weather alert system.

#

I have one of those cololights and it changes colors based on what weather alert is currently going on.

#

My last house was a trailer house, and I created it as a way to get instantaneous updates if there was a tornado warning issued etc...

#

Especially since I do not have cable.

#

And yes, that light changes color faster than any other ways I'd hear about it.

#

But yeah, I would love get be able to get my hands on a local weather station to get local weather conditions without dependency on the cloud.

weak finch
#

I need to dig in to setting up alerts so we wonโ€™t get surprised by bad weather like 2 weeks ago. Woke up without power and heavy rain and wind. Turns out we had a tornado go by within a couple miles away. Lost an inflatable decoration and a power strip not rated for outsides ๐Ÿ˜‚ due to wind blowing rain on the porch. Iโ€™ve since gotten proper outdoor rated plugs and strips but it was scary to think we werenโ€™t paying attention to weather and it bit us.

wild heron
#

Yeah, my router, modem, home assistant are hooked up to a battery back up and some of my smart speakers are as well. When there is an event like a tornado warning, every speaker is programmed to announce the tornado warning.

#

The alert light has a battery back-up in it as well, so if the power goes out, it doesn't.

#

And when we moved to our current house, I just redid the whole set up.

#

I became kind of paranoid about that when I lived in the trailer house though. No basement there, so if there was a tornado warning for our county, we needed to drive across down to a storm shelter / basement. ๐Ÿ˜

#

So that was an essential set up for me.

Plenty of people is blaming "AI" in the abstract for the recent RAM price spikes, but I haven't seen anybody around here point to the actual and direct culprit of it all: Sam Altman secretly bought 40% of silicon wafers (not even produced RAM, just the silicon wafers) from two of the biggest RAM manufacturers, at the same time. Not even with specific plans for what kind of RAM do with them. This is just to mess up with competitors.

Seriously, you can't hate OpenAI enough.

The thing I'm really looking forward to is network switches costing another $2000.
Things we're running at work at the highest end have 64GB of RAM and 480GB SSD, so... RIP.

unborn merlin
#

aren't most of the network stuff still running like

It's probably DDR4

unborn merlin
ocean oar
#

But Arista neglected to include the kernel interface that dmidecode uses so I'm just guessing from the CPU model

unborn merlin
#

yeah I think that most switch stuff is still DDR4

#

I don't even think that.. high-speed networking even touches ram these days I think its typically all ASIC/FPGA chips and shit

ocean oar
#

Depends if you're trying to stuff the entire internet routing table into it or not ๐Ÿ˜„

unborn merlin

๐Ÿ˜› yeah but if you're doing stuff that big you're not fretting over the ram cost

unborn merlin
#

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ this isnt a support channel I'm just going off what I assume the problem is by that error. (I dont even know how exactly you're "adding" HA to google home.)

ocean oar
#

Don't worry though, this switch gets to be double-expensive by having Broadcom's "Jericho" ASIC, with 16GB of HBM (can't remember what generation of that, either) for packet buffers

unborn merlin
#

any ASIC just quadruples the cost of shit

ocean oar
#

The shallow-buffer (Trident, Tomahawk) ones are quite reasonable by comparison, actually

unborn merlin
#

the costs of purpose-built relatively-low-quantity chips.

#

you know what i wanted for my new home server build?

a damn pcie switch because the board doesnt have bifurcation

#

except.. all of those chips thanks to fucking broadcom cost like 150$ minimum for just the silicone

#

so there are basically no products that are cheap enough to consider.

#

the only one even slightly maybe worth it would maybe be uhh.. some NAS company makes a 10G nic that also has M2 slots on it

ocean oar
#

Ah yeah, that QNAP one

#

There are a couple of pretty low-end PCIe switch options from ASMedia and their ilk

last cedar
ocean oar
#

Which is what that will have; probably about an 8-port switch so it can serve the x2 NIC + two x1 SSDs over a x4 host connection, or something of that nature

#

Also what you get on low-end four-port 2.5Gb NICs you can buy on Amazon, just four single-port i226 controllers and the worst PCIe switch imaginable

pliant flicker
#

Hey guys

#

I have never had a smart home before

#

Can I use a motion sensor by my door and it triggers when I walk in can it turn on my light

And then when I walk out can it turn it off when it sees me again

unborn merlin
#

which... is very niche apparently

hoary canyon
#

if the switch is inside the room you can also just install a basic motion sensor light switch

#

might be cheaper for things like closets

pliant flicker
#

I was just gonna get this motion sensor and put it behind the TV next to the door

#

So it just turns on when I walk in and off when I leave

#

Or is it worth buying a presense sensor for like double

hoary canyon
#

You need to have it visible

#

the way most motion sensors work is by detecting the heat from a person

#

unless you mean youโ€™re angling it towards the door?

ocean oar
#

I'm gonna assume they meant pointing sideways out the gap between the TV and the wall

hoary canyon
#

yeah I was overthinking I think lol

pliant flicker
hoary canyon
#

Yeah thatโ€™ll work

ocean oar
#

For what it's worth there is some sort of minimum angle that a PIR sensor needs in order to detect anything.
They are in essence a 1x2 pixel thermal camera, work by detecting differences in the relative heat measured by the two pixels

hoary canyon
#

Presence sensors (mmWave) are useful for ultra precise detections where you cant angle it perfectly or capture a whole area

#

you can usually set boundaries and even positions that trigger it

#

and it goes through walls somewhat

pliant flicker
hoary canyon
pliant flicker
#

Or do I get a motion sensor

#

Cause it's so much cheaper

hoary canyon
#

PIR is a type of motion sensor

pliant flicker
#

Is it

#

Is the P not presense

hoary canyon
#

It stands for passive infrared

#

itโ€™s what most motion sensors have been using for 20+ years

#

mmWave is newer tech thatโ€™s more precise but also more expensive

#

the average off the shelf motion sensor is going to be PIR

#

mmWave sensors basically just entered the market a year or two ago

We currently have a major argument about which way is the correct way for outlets to face. Nec code updated to flip them "upside down". This was to stop them from coming loose and stuff shorting between the legs

lapis pike
#

I remember reading something like that

warm helm
#

my house is half and half because of when they finished the basement

lapis pike
#

how often does that happen to warrent a convo like this though. In reality, if your outlet is worn out to the point where things are falling out, replac eit

#

in my home if a plug is upside down it means that its a switched outlet since the builders were lazy and didn't wanna run overhead lights

ocean oar
#

And yet still no half-insulated phase/neutral pins, which would make that largely a non-issue.
I mean the design of the outlet would still suck donkey balls, but could be made less bad.

About to deploy a bunch of E7s and a U7 Pros Outdoor for a relativeโ€™s house with 8 gig fiber ๐Ÿคฃ

#

The fiber is only $100/month normally Iโ€™d tell him to downgrade

unborn merlin

and?

#

when its running its also heavy.. ๐Ÿคฃ

#

if the pipe isnt secured properly thats a different problem.

tough cobalt
#

The check vavles on the surface. Doesn't allow backflow but the pump will empty if not run anyway

lapis pike
#

so its either pay high prices or use wireless solutions like starlink (which YUCK), TMO 5G which isn't bad but we game in our house so its a no there, or Dial up with century link

I was gonna say if you had an android, you can use a USB C -> Ethernet adapter and use your hotspot as a WAN

hoary canyon
#

Yeah I could always grab a cheap android phone but I worry about the battery bloating

#

Iโ€™d rather just have a preset solution

lapis pike
#

ofc

#

wanna see something insane?

hoary canyon

hoary canyon
