Hrm, I do need to think about control hardware for some outdoor lights I'm planning to install. Maybe this is a good time to buy
Biggest decision to make: do the lights for my new outdoor stairs in the garden need to be RGB, or just white 🤣
Yes
I have the stuff for new outdoor LED strip but i haven't deployed yet. I got RGB although ill probably only use it as white most of the time.
except when the house is in "Alarm Mode" in which case it will alternate red and blue like every other controlable light in and around the house.
I'm thinking "eyelid" lights recessed in the front of each step, that shine downward. This sort of design:
nice
Can find white, warm/cold, RGB and RGBW versions of those
Conversation from another server, thought I might as well bring it over here too
I'm a bit surprised that there isn't a simple "occupancy" helper in HomeAssistant. Most of my occ/vac setups are pretty much the same, and could probably be handled nicely by some sort of helper. All they really do is take input from sensors, and have outputs they control, and a configured dwell time that starts when all sensors go low, and if not retriggered, turns off the outputs
Those are template helpers.
Yeah, thats mostly what I'm using. But it just seems a curious omission, as a group sensor could also be covered by a template sensor, and inversely an "occ" sensor could get a nice ux like how groups have
(i'm not angling for it to be added, this isn't a feature request haha)
My triangulation adventure is getting out of hands 🥲
20 dedicated nodes for it
and 7 esp32 devices used as additional BLE nodes
i've been meaning to set up a bermuda system, but haven't done it yet
Be sure to have a robust wifi at first!
That was the root of most of my issues
I now lowered the DB of my WIFI antennas to a bare minimum and it works well
I am at 26 currently. after I changed some stuff around. was at 30 at one point I think
27 heere with the ESP devices
Hotbox
I got 7 ESP everything smart presence
will loose some more when i set up new zigbee network which will replace some devices that have proxies
Two floor hotbox*
Here in canada, weed is legal, so we do it in grand 😛
why not leave them as dedicated eps32s for that?
20 of mine have only the BLE proxy as code in them
@thorny heron I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
they are shelly devices that are also proxies. I have some dedicated ones about too. will see if i neeed any more after. i dont really use bermuda to automate on anyway. its just handy to track people sometimes.
my dedicated ones are a bit crap though. I might build some better ones. at some point. but 1 issue at a time 😛
you can do cool stuff, when my phone ring per instance, it tells me where it is ringing, on the closest speaker to my current location
'Your phone is ringing near the kitchen'
PEr instance
get ones with external antenna, changed the game for me
They went from wifi dropping eveyr day to almost never
yeah this setup is a bit crap
Your outlets have on-off switches?
Welcome to the UK Plug and sockets 🙂 they are the best!
That's kinda cool , not gonna lie 😛
you can get non-switched versions but they are not the normal. you almost never see them.
old but relevant Tom Scott video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEfP1OKKz_Q
http://tomscott.com - http://twitter.com/tomscott - ALL THE ELECTRICS I USED WERE UNPLUGGED. DO NOT DO THIS.
Yep, I'm going all patriotic again. And while I'm willing to bet that a good number of British folks know the first half of this video, there's one thing about slack in here that I only just learned myself.
Here we get only 1800Watts and shitty outlets hahaha
we are oddly patriotic about our plugs over here...
you guys have plugs? i just twist copper together
technically... we do have a second type of plug. its mostly the same but round pins.
our normal plugs are 13A and round pin ones are 5A. again you almost never see these.
And yet you insist on screwing the faceplates on with slotted-head screws.
All of those good features, and then... that.
Also visible screws, blergh.
pretty much the only use for m3.5 screws...
i too have plugs
you can get sockets and switches that are 2 parts. the main plate which screws in and a faceplate that clips over if you want to hide screws.
or you can put caps over them (which are a real pain to get out when you need too)
Schneider (who bought a local NZ brand called "PDL" who designed these) have been desperately trying to kill this product range in favour of their significantly shittier "Iconic" range, but one of the long-time "standard" ranges here is this, called the "600 series".
Comes in black and white, horizontal and vertical, and universally faceplates that cover the screws. Have 1/2/4 power outlets and 1-6 module plates. The modular ones take switches, and assorted high- (dimmers, PIR sensors) and low-voltage (A/V, etc) modules, also adapters to keystone jacks.
super useful summary
🥰🥰🥰
heater in living room has been set to different temperatures; last setting was 15 degrees
we have some modular stuff too but its only really used if you want/need a mix of stuff random stuff together
we have stuff like the big boy quad media plate
can put a bunch of random things in the modules
you see these in new builds where they think the TV should go etc... but honestly most people dont like them that much.
interesting, in the US we use “gang” boxes 1 gang is a regular size box and it goes up from there
we have gang too, 1 gang is 1 socket, 2 gang is 2 sockets. the above big media plate is basically 4x2 gangs put together
@hollow glacier I'm a little late but 😉
interesting they use the same name but it’s visibly different mounting styles
as for the “slots” for media stuff we call those keystones
are they running wled?
I just took em out of the box and flashed them, so just default effects
I saw that, I ordered 4 more of this years, thanks for the fundraising
yeah the profits go to a children's charity (Casa of Lexington) and the Open Home Foundation which is pretty cool
keystones are used here in network racks etc... but not really for general stuff. i think you can probably get a plate for using keystone form factor if you wanted to though. although depending on the modules used you might have to do some extra earthing stuff if its in the same box as mains power. euro modules tend to be already up to spec for it as its expected to be a possible or even likely use case.
you can make most stuff compliant if you want to
that’s interesting how you guys differ the plate side vs a patch panel keystone. I feel like we actually have it a bit better there then lol
most people still don’t combine power and low volt here though
Separate plates
yeah, with big media plates we can have power/antenna/video-connectors/lan etc...
I do like that you guys use WAGOs instead of janky wire nuts however
do i personally think its a good idea? no... not really.
wish that was standard here in the states
is it a matter off just waiting for older people to retire/die?
that and probably also people just don’t want to change because wagos are more expensive by a good bit here
For DIYers though I’d 100% recommend wagos over wire caps/nuts
"i have done it this way for 40 years, so you the person i pay the salary of will do it this way"
yep that’s the typical excuse I see and that they can get a crap ton of bulk wire caps for only like 1/2 as many wago connectors
There’s a good comparison in price.. you can get like 500 wire caps for $20
the money you save in time and fault finding is worth it. that being said the US mains system has so many problems anyway...
For sure but the typical residential electrician who has a boss that’s old school won’t use them to save “money”
even though it probably saves them time to use wagos
to be fair, if they were more popular they would be cheaper.
economy of scale
I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually take over but it’d probably be like 20+ years
you need to join the rest of the world on a sensible standard voltage and get rid of the insane centre tapped transformers for every house.
lol that probably won’t change at this point
literally every home would need to be rewired
the fact that your "neutral" is the centre if the transformer is just silly
you guys have arc fault and ground fault on basically everything don’t you?
Arc fault is only recently becoming required on most circuits and ground fault the same here
arc fault detection is now a requirement in our consumer units (breaker box) and every circuit has MCB and RCD protection. and of course in the UK we have a fuse in every plug too.
that’s nice..
our regulations are moving along and adapting super quickly at the moment with all the new tech coming in.
we used to only put Ground fault outlets by places that could contact water like outside and by water sources but now it seems like most circuits have breakers that include ground fault circuitry
I wish we had a good option here for smart breakers on that topic.. all the breaker replacements I’ve seen need a cloud service
we dont put sockets in places where they could contact water
We just slap weatherproof covers on them typically
unless inside
yeah we have weatherproof setups for outdoors but talking about inside
you guys don’t use hair dryers or curling irons in the bathroom? 🤣
we can have "shaver sockets" in bathrooms but they are super low current. and protected by an isolation transformer which limits is.
interesting, I think I remember seeing that somewhere now you mention it
its for a electric shaver or something. but no we dont use dryers and irons in the bathroom
some of them have a centre tap on the isolation transformer to give a 115 option.
you get them with usb ports on these days too but its not super common
Ah nice. We have USB outlets on the market here also but most people don’t install them
I regret buying a USB A outlet a couple of years ago now that C has taken over lol
i think its 0.3A max at mains voltage
its 0.2A even
even the light switches are on the outside of bathrooms
you can have them inside but they have to be on a pull string. so the switch is in a sealed unit on the ceiling and you pull a non conductive string to toggle.
technically if your bathroom was big enough you COULD have normal sockets. there are "zones" around water sources and things are relaxed the further out you go. but even then unless it was absolutly massive i dont think anyone would install them.
you would have to be something like 3 or 5 meters away from everything that has water as any part of it etc...
Am I the only one who enjoys watchign distro upgrades via terminal versus gui...
who enjoys watching them. I am off for a walk pretending not to think about all the stuff that can fall over...
Here you just have to have RCD (GFCI) outlets in the bathroom or combo RCD breakers. Our bathroom has an otherwise normal dual 10A outlet next to the sink
enjoy maybe a be an overreach, but I think its because I can see the actual progress versus depending on a status bar lol
i think we can technically install low poer shaver sockets in "zone 2" if they are lower power ones. but mostly you only see them in "zone 3"
this shows zones 0/1/2 pretty well
The light switch being outside the room is the funniest part of any of this, tbh
Keeping outlets away from water - while pretty old-school thinking with the advantages of modern equipment - is at least founded in some sort of common sense
light switches have mains power, people touch light switches, and people have wet hands in bathrooms
these are fine
because the string separates you away from power
pull strings used to be the normal but they are less common these days.
Just install a clapper in the bathroom.
could we have a waterproof lightswitch these days. yes... but what if the seals fail or its incorrectly installed. or a kid messes with it.
we have a huge amount of safety redundancy in everything.
if someone bends a regulation slightly it means there's still other protections.
sometimes following the exact letter of every reg is not practical.
Might have honestly, but that was 10+ years ago
never thought about wled. that would work on like the ornament?
i mean there's also those capacitative sensor things..
Tho I mostly know them from 12v/24v not mains.. but surprising its not a common thing since its.. very low possibility of any issues and etc..
I wonder if it's because we have extractors now, so the switch is switching more current?
Capacitve and wet fingers are not ideal
Thanks for bald shaming me.
in general the extractors are powered by a fused spur and the switch for them is just a low current signal wire which tells them to spin up.
I did wonder if that was it, the bathroom switch is the one I have not stuck a Sonoff in.
I think my electric heater in my bathroom is slightly underpowered :(
When you get an ad that's essentially telling you to buy a car from somebody else
Hmmm, maybe I do need a new car, but definitely not one that continually shows me ads...
And it's not the first time it's happened:
“The last time this happened, Stellantis was advertising extended warranties to owners via their infotainment. Many were frustrated as the offer continued to show, even after acknowledging it by pressing “OK.” What’s more, others saw the ad despite their car exceeding the mileage limit mentioned in the promotion.”
oh wonderful. We have a Jeep at home with Uconnect 5
The tactic of 'continue to show the ad until you explicitly interact with it' is just the level of rage I want to feel when I'm about to start driving
time to go digging for where they buried the sim or data connection! /s
Pretty sure it’s eSIM
The uconnect 5 systems are based on Android so wouldn’t surprise me
This trend to see how bad you can make consumer products before people stop buying is really frustrating.
Cars worked fine for years, now vendors want some recurring revenue and decide to make the products worse rather than better. Same thing with TVs. I always expect shows I watch to have ads, but the TV itself is a conduit.
What’s next?
It's called enshitification
did you see the Hyundai brake pad thing?
NUC arrived, looking forward to setting it up w/ Immich etc.
Turns out the power supply the ebay seller included is not powerful enough
well that's awkward. probably sign off someone who doesn't understand se;;omg ot and went with "it fits so its probably fine"
yeah, it does fit. unfortunately it's 3.43 amps when the NUC asks for 4.74 amps
at what voltage?
I would love for my 1999 Volvo to do this /s
19
Give it a try!!!
Yeah if they say "worked for me" I'll probably just buy the right one somewhere
I guess if you don't load it too bad you are fine with that one
so you got 65 watts instead of 90. that seems like a lot. i guess it depends on the spec.
But not sure if it will post, as usually machines don't clock down until after post
5090 NUC
NUClear
!!!!!!!
I kinda miss it but also not
My ZBT-2 did not come today and this makes me sad 🙁
By the looks of the tracking data the courier had a delay getting it to the delivery depot. high hopes for tomorrow though.
I wanted to get one, but then I thought I'll wait for the first few updated/fixes, then I remembered I'm running Beta monthly on my main setup lol
its gunna be my first real attempt at zigbee. no migration or anything fancy needed so i think ill be fine 🙂
Interference caused package loss, will retry
nice 🙂
YES FINALLY I can make calls with my home assistant web portal.
This is a rabbit hole you do not want to explore Suf
oh no you lost me at calls
LOL
if you call me i’ll stare it down until it goes to voicemail which i’ll promptly ignore
calls you know.. I can lend your ipad because i lost my phone and need to make a call
now to check if i can pick up the phone with ha if someone calls me
have you considered therapy
calling
in this day and age
nu-uh i’ll send an text to 112 and i’ll happily bleed out before calling
have you considered therapy
I don’t think therapy will help with bleeding out, but I’m the not the right kind of doctor to answer that question
it will help you be in tune with the fact that you're bleeding out
Suf trying extra hard to be one with the earth
Im schizoaffective i know the drill. its code black in my country
we share that country lol
ngl crisis help is either really good or really bad
I blame them for the death of a good girlfriend
I have a near death experience written police all over it
I'll fax you instructions
how modern of you
I can print that too
a legit one
lmao
starting paint.exe
ngl I like asfinag they have gone all digital
I can do that too
tbh you used to be able to get a sticker withyour plate written on it
What's everyone's playlist they listen to when writing automations
I had a beautiful umweltplakette until TÜV removed it because my car violated some rules and now I got a stupid one with a hand written plate number
nothing with words I'll say that much
that would just irritate me to no end
on my prev car it was stuck on askew
but it was behind my window tint so I didnt fix it
You tinted you front window?
Nah
75%?
fax'ing was a great vector of attack for a while.
someone breached a bank by asking for a statement of an account via fax. nobody knew how to deal with a fax request properly so just did what they asked and sent documents to them. there was no security procedure for it and someone was told to "deal with it" so they just did no security.
Only 10% (ithink) of the windscreen are allowed to be covered at all
even if I have an ABE?
I can't have one of those cool racing strips on the top of it
I am so SO happy we do not work with faxes anymore
lolol
oh wait I kinda forgot that TUV sagt NEIN isn't a meme lol
I have legal tint here, used to run illigal tint but got sick of getting pulled over
It's reality
yeah
its not really effective anymore because whilst some companies still "use fax" its been replaced by "email -> fax" on one side and "fax -> email" on the other side and so both companies pay a third party instead of sending an email because "we do that by fax"
I still do real fax at work
Actual analog number calling with all the beeps and boops
yes but that's because Germany is behind on the digital curve :P
oh, I am sure there are still cases for it. but in a lot of cases its all been replaced on both ends anyway
no germany is special
B2B 100%
I run legal tints here now, you can hardly see it
thats the downside
used to run chameleon tints, they're legal but cause so many stops
one of those things, being right doesn't help... not worth the hassle
yep
I had more issues woth my previous car
upto a point I actually got into heated arguments
lol
it was always a "routine traffic stop"
I keep a folder with every document in my trunk, they hate that trick
🤣
here the ABE officer
no but even the bone stock not modified audi got me pulled over
I'm on winter tires now, this is the only time my car is actually illegal nowadays
:o
215 wide tires but only 205 allowed
LOL
Straight to jail
oh about winters: the fitter claims one of my rims is bent. I think he's just incabaple of balancing a car
Yeah but everyone sees the stock renault rims with winters on a lowered car, nobody checks that (also looks atrocious)
I cannot remember a cop ever looking at my size lol
ever
but I have not been pulled over by german police in FOREVER so idk
The funny thing is, with my summer wheels I can go up to 235 because it's an 8" wide rim but the stock ones are just 7" so it's 205 max
I have way more clearance on the stock rims but heyo
Yeah I do it in my garage
fair
They probably see NL and just don't care because it means more paperwork
I dont think so. I hardly see police nowadays lol
or they do see it and do not care because its not a danger
it cannot be sticking outside of the body of the car
Need to find a better dimmer switch. These look good but are not good.
https://kb.shelly.cloud/knowledge-base/shelly-plus-wall-dimmer
Shelly Plus Wall Dimmer (The Device) can switch on/off and vary the brightness of compatible dimmable lights. It can be easily wired in the place of a standard US light switch. Enhanced with all the gen2 firmware flexibility, it provides professional integrators with additional options for end customer solutions. It can work standalone in a loca...
... Not good by... what standard?
you're being a bit of a fool not.. actually saying what you want. 🤷♂️
#1284966353798697001 with recommendations tag is probably where you should be looking.
Out of 12 I've had to return 3 as defective. Also doesn't do elv.
why would it.
its literally not sold to do that
Mostly just venting. Tho I might need to peek and see what's being recommended as switches.
the power supply to low voltage lighting is what needs to support dimming then.
who knows maybe we'll see a new dimmer at some point.
... seeing as that shelly wall dimmer is still uhh.. a gen2 device? we're at gen4 now..
Not sure I need elv actually. The defects were the annoying part. Challenge is flickering at very low brightness
Then of course troubleshooting if the flickering is bad hardware or... Grr.
smart switch + smart bulb is likely to be the way dimming is done by a lot of people in the future instead of traditional dimming methods which then have to be decoded and set in software for an led bulb anyway. so tradational dimmer stuff is probably not high on prirority list.
These are led strips. With drivers. Wonder if smart drivers will be a thing
its a digital system pretending its talking to an analogue system talking to another digital system doing the same thing. might as well keep it digital.
smart drivers are definitely a thing...
smart drivers already exist.
Indeed. 0-10v is not very developed either
proper led power supplies tend to have their own ways of being dimmable.
I mean.. it exists.. and there is a 0-10v shelly last I checked.. I use one.
Ooh. I wonder if I should look into this.
https://kb.shelly.cloud/knowledge-base/shelly-dimmer-gen4
Supported load types
Dimmable LED lamps: up to 150 WIncandescent bulbs: up to 200 W
Halogen lamps: up to 200 W
Iron-core transformer with low-voltage incandescent lamps: up to 200 VA
Dimmable electronic transformers: up to 200 W
not a wall switch style
but supports more.
It would be great if this conversation was…not here
Not a water cooler talk?
the ender of casual conversion has arrived! /s
@unborn merlin yea. The newer switches confused me on the elv thing. Looking at smart drivers now
theres also the shelly plus RGBW
which I think is just.. 12/24v mosfet driven 4 channels
Yea. That's the device that got me into Shelly 🙂
its almost weird that.. there are so few companies being not-fucking-shitty to their own customers like shelly tend to be.
I wonder if there is a non sucky dumb physical dimmer switch to put in front of modern shelly
I mean it has two inputs.. I would imagine a momentary-button or something could be configured in software to behave more like what one may want there but 🤷♂️
Yea. I played around with that. It's crude but serviceable
browsing their thing... I just learned they have..
a goddamned shelly LoRA addon thing
Haha. Yea
absurd how many niche things they have 😛
You mean for water meter and stuff?
https://www.shelly.com/products/shelly-lora-add-on-x2
no, I mean for long distance linking between shelly's
Ah, sad
I have no experience with inovelli, I might try one of their white products tho.. no matter exp either
inovelli I believe is the only company thats done/doing mmwave switch stuff anytime recently.. but I think thats still not a completely finished product yet either? or is almost done?
Wasn't that the one which LTT had problems with?
Dunno. 🤷♂️
also his house is a..
a lot.
he probably should've run like.. extra wires and done modbus or rs485 stuff for all his shit..
Boy can't even have good wifi because he has too much wifi
Then again his house is huge
I'd dream of just having problems like that lol
Your wifis conflicting with each other?
Nah I'm fine Linus' home isn't tho
I meant one day you hope for that problem
nah..
Well he knows the problem now it seems
as I said.. I'd use some hardwire communication for some stuff if I could planned ahead.
RS485, canbus, modbus.. whatever
I guess you can have too much ubiquiti after all
well its also like 100+ switches or whatever shit
All Z-Wave innit?
dont remember.
I'm partially designing a.. hvaac controller+smartvent thing
and my intention is likely to canbus with the power wires inside the vents to the smart vents
so that.. less signal shit
also having the vents surrounded on 5-of-six-sides by metal is unhealthy to signals anyways 😛
🤷♂️ esphome has canbus and modbus and other shit built into it regardlesss
Just thinking at a scale of 100+ devices i wouldn't want to manage it through esphome
I mean ideally the vents would be bound to the contrller more than homeassistant directly
backup case is.. thread probably.
since the c6 supports it.
No, this switch cannot be used with any sort of transformer, ballast or LED Strip that has a transformer. We recommend the On/Off Switch (w/Temperature and Humidity Sensing).
Just a piece of string /s
transformer lights are a pain in the ass.
this should work just fine with a regular driver right?
dont know.. it doesnt epscify what sort of dimming it uses
but most people dont have lights with transformer crap to deal with.. those are annoying and expensive usually (so.. built into stupid expensive houses)
someone I work for.. has a bunch of that shit in his house
(also has a bunch of light boxes that the electrician elected not to put fucking neutral wires into as well..)
so like
their stuff looks nice yes.
Their website is way too fancy to sell lightswitches
but holy fuck man that price
is ridiculous
and yes; i despise that scroll style
give me the fucking technical details. do not make me fucking dig for it after scrolling through your bullshit.
https://inovelli.com/collections/smart-home/Presence
They also have mmwave presence stuff too.
But jesus fucking christ..
99$ for zigbee, 115$ for zwave?
thats.. a fucking ton.
(also that fancy scrolling shit seems to break the discord embed, funnys)
Nice
also unsure why they.. dont have thread mmwave sensors.. wonder if the 2.4ghz interferes or soemthing
🤔 i'm designing a few things for that guys house actually.. smart stuff to retrofit in that he enjoys
going to.. hijack the old phone lines/boxes in each room to put presence/pir/mmwave/temp/humidity sensors inside and such
Put all of that inside an old phone and just leave it on the wall
inject 24v; step down power at each wall plate
should be sufficient.. esp at each probably.. still plotting it tho 😄
While still making the phone function as a mic for voice assistant
nah, thats a bit much for me
tho I will admit I have been tempted to get a few of these boards for my own house
becaus y'know..
google continues to make their smart system worse with gemini shit
and I have HA already.. so..
My Nest speakers stopped actually doing what I say, maybe I have to renew the connection to Nabu Casa
... mine still works but boy that initial process was obnoxious
I didnt pay for nabu; just did it myself.. but wow it was annoying. 😄
It just goes "Bim Bum" after a command and does nothing
that could also very much ust be google having made assistant worse up to releasing gemini to it
so it looks better and all.
... y'know fun stuff.
I'm on the beta firmware on the big Nest speaker
The minis are still on normal assistant
All of them react the same
may need to try the re-sync command thing maybe
Spotify works tho
Yea. Some mixed vibes from inoveili. I feel like lutron and leviton are kinda proprietary tho
"hey google synchronize my devices" or something like that?
Idk maybe I'll just install the home app again
I used.. one of their leviton switches in the house downstairs
600w dimmer
dunno how they pakced that much into that thing; but hey
also its in the family area of the house.. has worked pretty fine relatively speaking..
Living Room Lights
Current: 1.4.13
Available: 1.7.1
yeaha I havent touched that thing in forever
"Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi 1000W Universal LED/Incandescent Dimmer."
.. the fuck are they using to be able to dim goddamn 1000w of power?
that was also like.. I dont even remember how long ago
was a lot less smart devices back when I threw that in
but I probably will.. get that onju voice pcb set made at some point just to phase out the google side of things for the fairly obvious reason 😄
ah; looks like its actually not ideal because it lacks the XMOS chip like the homeassitant voice preview uses.
https://github.com/iMike78/nest-mini-drop-in-pcb
someones already worked at it.. 🤣 of course
i'm always slightly supicious of the works with.. have to check to make sure HA can handle it..
really wanna get things nicely on HA, rather than conceding to Amazon or google
you feeling inovelli is sus?
no just confused
but it may just be that they settled chipsets before thread stuff was more widespread
or intereference.. I dunno
RF is fucking sorcery after all.
what has changed in docker that won't allow portainer connect and to fail to connect to the local environment?
everything seemed fine a couple weeks ago but now portainer is gving me an error that it failed loading the environment
I can see the container, I just can't access it.
It has been working great for years and now something has changed.
why would you come ask for support on something explicitly stated as not supported
🙃
i understand where your coming from but to be fair i am not sure what convinces you that they are running supervised?
because they're coming here asking about docker.
you could probably ask your question in a thread in #1284966540617449515 and explain your setup a little more...
I mean I shoved portainer into my HA supervised too.. ish.. but its not recommended obviously. 😛
that makes me assume container, not supervised tbh
yeah, except in container style.. the HA instance doesn't control the docker service
it just runs in it.
whereas supervised...
does in fact have some control over it.
yeah. you could be right. but in any case the question belongs in #1284966540617449515 and if it turns out to be supervised then its an unsupported version and also supervised is about to become unsupported whatever the case.
well, standalone supervised at least. 😛 since I assume HAOS still uses it
yeah the "supervised install method" becomes unsupported. not the supervisor itself
holy shit, this month has flown I just realised we are only a few days away from BETA week...
I won't remember, so early happy getting old day.
lul.
It's unsupervised, but something has changed because it worked for ages up until 11.1
Watching The American Revolution documentary makes me want to watch Hamilton again
Aaron Burr, sir?
I adore Hamilton. It's fantastic
It really is
the website not having a dark mode is blinding me right now 😄
Anyone already running the new zigbee toiletroll holder?
So as it turns out, GoPro makes exactly one good product and it's their mounting system
Works great for webcams
Chin cam
Yeah I'd be looking like this on that one
Oh nice. apparently the new ikea smarthome range will be released in europe at the beginning of next year. (assuming the article I saw was right.)
came a day late but... the game's afoot
What’s the little display Michael?
its the powers companies IHD (in house display). its a peace of crap but if theres issues it could be needed so i keep it there out the way. I have a custom one too that s at the back of the rack at the brush. its harder to notice cos the display is off when idle. the custom one reports the same data but it also relays it to MQTT for HA integration 🙂
UK smart meters (maybe elsewhere too) use a variation of zigbee (not compatible with normal zigbee and i beleive also includes a sub ghz band) to communicate which the IHD's which you have to authorise with your meter serial numbers and such. its a bit of a pain tbh but it works.
reports electric/gas usage (gas is half hour polling I think) and current cost.
On that note I got an Octopus Mini today so I look forward to fiddling with that
moving to octopus is probably on the cards at some point but there is some minor issues which ill have to solve if/when it happens so its been put off
They gave me free gas for a year 😊
Because I thought it was a smart gas meter 😊
And the house was unoccupied so the estimated usage was 0 😊
(I'm paying them back slowly)
lol, yeah that kinda thing happens all the time
I'm guessing it's one of the hildebrand IHDs?
yeah
They work pretty well 🙂 And are handy for the 'Did I remember to turn off X' intrusive thoughts.
I think thee version of the integration I have is outdated. they moved repos or something. I remember seeing a warning but its working so I left it.
my untracked is slowly getting smaller 🙂
visuals are fun for watching my new mesh appear 🙂
great infuse is broken for jellyfin
Sigh some negativity people. "Its going to rain soon" I not acording to my led marquee. He says wdym. I try to explain. He "yeah then china also knows your weather"

Well, it was nice meeting you
Okay, goodbye!

Do I need to buy two ZBT-2s for both Thread and Zigbee?
Yes. And #1284966617670881350 can help with this kind of question
I hate forums on Discord
ok
Why is there no forum post for ZBT-2
the one with the 59 new posts:
If I already have a Skyconnect, and I plan to buy a ZBT-2, which one should I use for Zigbee, and which for Thread?
look, #1284966617670881350
I guess the search doesn't work then 🤷♂️
Any Black Friday codes?
@unborn merlin Just found this one too.. https://www.evehome.com/en-us/eve-dimmer-switch
hmm, might not do ELV.. but does do MLV
Anyone know a good hardwired light switch?
I need to stem the acquisition of battery-powered devices.
ooo, forecast consumption
yeah. probably better than when my power/gas company estimates my bill tbh
@raw tulip Thanks for the ornaments, great improvement from the H1!
2025, Turkey is still a thing?
guaranteed to contain less plastic than sea life too!
I would rather chew a light post than turkey
don't you already do that? lol
Those look incredible! Thank you for supporting the children's charity and the Open Home Foundation!

but i have never been a big fan of meat
Oh boy.
Bone marrow based appetizers, its a thing now.
Beef bone marrow is great appetizer
sounds lowkey disturbing

Surprised it's taken this long, tbh
last i checked cannibalism is still frowned upon
It's fine as long as there's chia seeds and avocado 🥑
"Internally, Shelly is just changing the conduction angle of the AC sine wave after doing its auto-calibration." that hurts my digital mind
not sure your situation, but i feel like in most cases, battery powered switches/remotes have a 'cheapness' associated with them.. just saw someones RV where they'd taped like 10 remotes to the wall that controlled everything, lights, awning, fans, ac, etc
<@&330946878646517761>
Gone
Ta much 🙂
I dislike battery powered devices, too but it’s hard to find some devices with power cord (temperature and air quality sensors, for example)
with few exceptions, the correct battery powered control is the cellphone, or one with its own solar.
not exactly a huge project, but i was really happy about how easy it was to set up some automation to make it easier to cast music from the new turntable shelf in the hallway to the living room stereo without pulling out a phone to hit buttons in the wiim app. just have this script running every time i hit a button on a spare lutron pico. total setup was under 15 minutes
wife approval factor off the charts
But does the dog approve?
The dog does seem excited by the conveniences offered by Free And Open Source technology
Hey all, I just had a bit of a weird idea pop into my head but I've not used assist stuff much so not sure if it's viable; I was wondering if it's possible to make Assist start listening based on a trigger from a different sensor? For example a door sensor? My weird idea was that it'd be cool if I could make a wand in a stand that when pulled out (due to a hidden magnet in the wand and sensor in the stand), it'd activate a microphone for assist to listen to a spell phrase to do things like lights, music control etc
It's a very very silly idea but I thought it could be cool if assist could be triggered that way?
Totally. However, what TRVs/motion sensors/temp sensors don't use batteries?
For my smart home, if devices have batteries, I want the longest batteries possible. I also want hard-wired controls as much as possible, such as light switches. I also want to automate in the first instance. CBA with phone controls/remotes.
The assist_satellite.ask_question action might be a workaround.
Ah awesome, I'll look into it! Thanks!
Or assist_satellite.start_conversation - depending on the usecase.
#1284966915055288530 might be able to help with details.
Awesome, I'll check then out! Thanks again!
what kind of power supply I need for replacing the one in HA Green? Is it like this?
A post in #1284966540617449515 would make sense
Aight!
If the plug is center-positive, yes.
Hi, anyone of yall ever heard of Homeway? I've just stumbled upon it and it has an LLM for assist for free, and many other features. It seems too good to be true, does anybody have any experience with it? It seems weird because there arent almost any mentions of it on the HA reddit and this discord server
Please do not crosspost.
oh boy
out central heating in the building broke
was about to curse at tado again but no the entire building is down
It looks like a radiator valve actuator that you just add electricity to turn on is a thing
https://store.danfoss.com/en/Climate-Solutions-for-heating/Hydronic-floor-heating/Actuators/Thermal-actuators/TWA/x/p/088H3142 (in 230V or 24V versions)
Exercise for the reader to build your own control gear to actuate it, I guess?
That's cool. It would be great if houses were built in a way to support these.
My Tado X thermostat broke last week. It was cold in the UK. My Korean wife was very upset.
Well there is problem #2, these things are necessarily battery-powered because when you're designing a house you don't put power outlets right next to the heater
And depending on the system I'm guessing the pipe is too hot to run the wires alongside it
Well I must be your korean wife because I am, too, upset
I'm neither korean nor a wife
but I would be upset about being in the UK as well
LMAO
right now I'd love some in-floor heating though 😮
Couple of years ago our high-wall heat pump died, naturally right at the beginning of winter. Not that it really gets that cold here, but it was annoying for the 4 days until I could get someone to replace it.
But I got a nice shiny gloss black one (that goes much better with the design of the house than the old white unit), and with local wifi control, so everyone was happy.
i could just turn the valve on my radiator a bit
but I'm stubborn
Meanwhile, the AC is running here. 😛
We should send heat through a series of long tubes...
Installed 800W of PV, now I'm waiting on Ecoflow to give me developer access so I can use the API in HA...
with liquid
or just bluetooth heat?
I'm just the idea guy
what the hell am I looking at? solar panels? and why did you type it twice?
Heatant
Seems like it eas sent twice
Yes, 2x500W panels hung up with wall hooks
Best buldak ever?
Can't tell, why are there ads in the picture
I recently had the 2X and that was just my spice limit, edible but not enjoyable.
yea I add creme fraiche to it and stuff to make it less shpicy
not that deep I use the phone for daily stuff rn cuz iphone in repair idk where to turn this stuff off
A lot of people say it comes down to how much you let it reduce
in the app settings. but disgusting that this is a thing to begin with
idk if you knew but its a highend gaming phone its not meant for daily usage or anything
it has shoulder triggers
thats not normal at all
this has nothing to do with what kind of device is
so a watermark doesnt change anything
it ruins the image
I dont even use the camera often
why would a device you pay for watermark images with their branding
it belongs burned
back into the horse armor hell it came from
ads included™
@solar zealot
thats the phone that emulates the full gta v on 110fps btw on mid settings without frame gen
I have a white samsung, that's about as deep as I go nowadays
LinkedIn giving me false hopes as usual, only "you could be interested in this" bs
we dont even use linkedin in germany lol
That's not quite true
never saw linkedin here
Source: I'm german
you dont see linkedin because similar to any other network, it doesnt matter
wer benutzt bitte linkedin hier
Let's keep it in english so others can join the rant lol
but who uses that
I use it to track down people
but nothing else and no one else uses it here
the only thing that linkedin did was attract weird people to put me on a list
I've had many conversations with especially international brands that have a german office or similar
just use indeed atp
or message the job thing directly
or go to it and ask if you can make money there
I do that too
I will be out of my current one by December
why
That's just some pic I took of my car I liked
I'm fine shooting myself but thanks
that sounded dark lol
sure you dont need one? : (
Good enough
Nikon D40x 18-200mm

Camera body is old af but I love that lense
My Body is also old af
It's so sharp, I love it
noice
13yo Body or smth
Couldnt Set the Focus perfectly too
you are doing a much better job than me, lol
I have no grid/home measurement, so I have very little tracked.
Basically just the 3D printer, the heater in my bedroom, and a torchiere lamp.
how did you generate this?
default HA energy dashboard
ooh, i need to integrate this with my energy provider.
My energy provider doesn't integrate with anyone. :(
But I'll eventually set up a flash sensor.
A CT clamp is much easier.
Is it accurate though?
I would say its accurate enough for purpose.
emporia's is accurate within 2%, agree for home use that's plenty good for me
im so tired of the alexa integrations breaking every 3 days
amazon don't like us all up in there API
Why do you have a freezer on the balcony?
Looked at Shelly's and the new version can only handle 80A, and comes with a clamp limited to 50A. That could be an issue.
they still sell the older one with 120A clamps i have 2 of those
The likelihood that you're maxing out your service is low
This is a 5000 sq. ft. house. In the summer we have three swamp coolers running 10A each motors. Toss the washing machine and dryer in and you're likely already over 50A.
80A might be fine, but I don't see the 80A clamp for sale.
one of the pro ones supports up to 400A I think if you want to totally overkill it 😛
Maybe in the distant future when I have an EV or two. :P
If you're in the US, consider that it's split single phase.
That means you use two clamps
True.
does anyone know how to make this fully transparent
You want #1284965988642590891
Hrm... I suppose that does mean loads would be split across those clamps. I was originally thinking we'd use the second clamp for the subpanel, but yeah, I'd want a second Shelly if I were going to do that.
Screw it, why not.
There, bought the gen3 with the 50 and a second clamp. Now to toss it in a box and forget to install it for five years.
I have an Iotalink sitting in a box waiting to be installed for a few years
It's tradition. If you don't have a box of "someday I'll get around to setting that up", are you even trying?
Not enough room in the breaker box and it's outside, so it'll be some work
Dutch kitchens often are too small to house both a fridge and a freezer, so we put ours in a storage room om our balcony
@atomic delta @proper jetty im however using a p1 homewizard meter
Yeah we have one of those 1m tall fridges build in, it doesn't have a freezer haha
Ah well, its been working fine for the past 10 years
LOL
;p
Ohhh you said so yea
first Ommoord then somewhere else
Ok I really have to get moving
i’m just waiting for my car to be done preheating 😂
Pfff luxepoes, I'll have to sit in the care and shake it warm myself
😂😂
nothing is a biggie middle finger to your neighbors then getting in to a worn and defrosted car
just to find out you ran it out of gas warming it up?
We have three fridge/freezer combos, a standing freezer, and a chest freezer.
thats alot
A factor in me saying I was concerned about the 50A clamps :P
well depending on thier age they may not use that much
Bro is prepared for 5 weeks no groceries
I think two are older (2000ish), the rest should be newer.
no it’s using its battery
Id love to integrate my car into my HA, its just too old for that
lmao fair
no such thing. auto start can be intergrated as well as a remote battery monitor etc
I drive a 2003. And that's new to me.
why
Interesting
I dont believe so? My manager can start his car from the outside and have it drive out
environmental rules
lulz
can and being allowed to
might’ve gotten idle laws mixed up
Just looked it up. Apparently it's legal when available from the factory, but there are some vehicle modification laws that may prevent aftermarket ones.
Yeah Europe(or at least NL) isn't very keen on carmodifications
Or vehiclemods in any case
Meanwhile I live in Nevada, where you can build a car from scraps and still register it.
only if done badly
It does require some extensive testing though.
but its hybrid electric so it’s fine
even more lax now. with all the states passing the inspection delay stuff you can drive on 3 wheel for like 2+ years lol
reminds me I need to look that up. my truck is due next year
In my county, if it has a VIN, it doesn't ever need inspection or testing.
Yes, really.
well it is nevada.. what is someone gonna hit? a bush
We have above-ground power lines. A few outages have been caused by idiot drivers.
But yeah, my county in particular doesn't even allow for emission testing. Can't even report vehicles belching black clouds.
lol interesting.
We have a combi-fridge/freezer in the kitchen and I have an additional freezer in the basement/my office.
Why do yall have so many damn freezers and fridges tho
americans! they do their shopping once a decade it seems
Yeeeaaaah
iirc that has something to do with car-only infrastructure and a lack of mixed-use zoning
But I mean, it checks out as well given that some have to drive an hour to get to the supermarket while we most of the time only have to walk like 10minutes
Weelllllllll
well you are from Capelle so probably fatbike for you
Not to dox myself but I have 5 supermarkets within 10 minutes of walking
Nah, it got stolen by some guy who went to the mcdrive after
Tru
hesseplaats lol
o wait that is ommoord
Yeah thats the one Im talking about
LOO
I mean
This morning I already said where I lived ;P
and I did my shopping there too
i haven't been there in like almost a decade lol
But nah, I do everything by foot
and the metro?
Ah, so ur old
ikr
Naaaaaah
I used to ride the M-type metros
guess my age :)
and the strippenkaart
For once I can't because revolut is banned from OVPAY
Same tho
Naaaaaa 😭
Im guessing ballpark mid-high 20's
Like 28-ish
older lol

yes 🫡
I need to make some fun/usefull automations, I haven't in a while, does someone have inspiration?
Im thinking of making something like a chores board but not sure if it will actually be effective with my adhd brain
Try "Home-Maintanence" from HACS makes entity creation for chores easy and then you can go for automations from there.
Maybe ask #1284980040940912641 for more input
Yeah I figured it would flood there, most threads dont even get replies :<
But I want to make something without HACS
i wonder if i could use the ring motion detection events to trigger a temporary, say 10 second rtstp stream (maybe 10 seconds after frigate doesnt detect anything?) from the ring cameras to friage bc the ring person detection is absolutely horrific, all motion is person
if you are running frigate why would you care what the ring detects or dosen't
because they're wireless cameras and i feel like 24/7 streaming will cripple other iot devices
I dont have issues with my tapo C221's
Which are recording to my NAS 24/7
is your network that shit?
wait up, pretty sure they're set to record 24/7 anyway, thought they were on motion
eh, its alright lol, got 3 unifi wifi 6 aps, the routers shockingly bad but waiting for a new 10gb nic to come for opnsense and 2000/2000 wan, ring doesn't have rstp support, solely through their servers but it's what my dad wanted
although i may have convinced him of a local nvr and external backups
Bro's got better wifi than my whole company
mildly regret the unifi aps tbh
they're alright but that's about it
I have a love-hate relationship with Unifi
looks... they become one with the house and you don't notice them
although on that point i kinda wanna get an e7 from them 😅 which completely scraps the smooth circle for a box on the ceiliing like the older makaris
this, they do something right then screw you with misleading speeds on their routers (im talking about you ucg ultra)
(i wont be getting it, rather spend the money on the steam frame when they come out)
it works good enough
software looks good, but doesn't give you much control and the topographic map just absolutely dies if you don't use one of their routers and switches
ahh yes, my pc is the router... not the ip of the actual gateway that dhcp gave you
True and its convoluted
Creating network isolation or firewal rules is just a pain
it works good enough that I do not get rid of it but boy
and the wifi experience thing is completely useless, 1% and i get full gigabit, 100% and im barely pushing 10mb
so so so many pain points, but it does work, it looks nice and it does the job
yep
Im running those tplink mesh wifi pillars, doesn't really get worse than that I think
Full signal but speed? Nah. The speed was optional but not included
mesh is always a bad deal
What in the world
😳
🤷♂️
Must be those linux iso's
Yes, and my normal data

I too have a long hallway. VoIP is a necessity

Anyone here got experience or tips on how to source hardware for building a powerstation?
The goal is to charge it up with our generated power from PV or when the electricity prices are cheap to use it during the times of the day where the price is more expensive.
For europe/Germany specifically
I saw a guy on the youtubes make a home battery in the UK from vape batteries
At this point anything would be possible
Colleague of mine in hungary did it with notebook batteries
One of my lady coworkers came in, trash talking us for not telling her she had red stuff on her butt when we saw her on Friday. "No offense MJ, but I don't exactly spend my day looking at, or even desiring to look at, your butt!" She's in her upper 60s. 🤣
She's also the mother of a friend, so she and I know each other outside of work fairly well, and she's used to me. Lmao
I'm looking at LFP cells. I'm gonna put the battery on a boat eventually, so I'm trying to find the best combination of hardware that is reliable, but also not too expensive (looking at you, Victron).
I kinda know what I'm getting into, but I have no idea where to source good hardware because I mainly watch english (so US targeted) media and now for once I need europe/Germany specific advice lmao
I just remembered that there was a software called Tasmota, to replace ESP devices with some custom firmware.. now after googling around a while, seems that everybody is replacing the Tasmota devices with ESPHome firmware?? Is that way to go nowadays?
ESPHome has closer ties to HA than Tasmota. So integrating them usually is easier.
I have been using ESPhome only for my own custom devices, but never thought that they could be utilized also to commercial products. Tasmota offers some pre-made "templates" for each device type, so that I don't need to define sensors etc manually, like for ESPhome I'd need to do?
Oh cool, there is actually some device collection with premade templates also on ESPhome site
I haven't had the pleasure of using ESPhome, but from my experience tasmota devices are really easy to setup, too.
I don't think everybody is moving from Tasmota to ESPHome (in fact, that seems like a pain honestly). I like Tasmota for off-the-shelf devices and ESPHome for custom devices
I still need to flash my wyze plugs to esphome
doit
Anyone else buy crap for black friday and now can't decide if I'm looking forward to more tinkering or kicking myself because my setup does work... Kinda 🙂
my list of projects is to long. Currently shopping for a projector screen
|| DOIT ||
Biggest thing I want is a motorized blackout shade, but the options are many and the prices are high.
