Boomers are 60+ these days

unborn merlin
#

its also heavily a mindset.

#

if you can fake the lead-poisoned brain-is-cheese thing.. you too can be a boomer.

#

facebook/etc helps with that obviously.

forest edge
#

you just know infinite is going to berated so bad when he gets older and crosses that threshold he despises so much now

mighty rose
#

eh - when all you do is piss on things, then wonder why the floor is wet.

mighty rose
#

on a positive note - can I just say how much I love this graph:

#

Pretty much all of the untracked is my HVAC system..... One day, I'll figure out how I'm going to bring that into the dashboard.

unborn merlin
#

many annoying current clamps?

mighty rose
#

yeah, that's what I'm thinking..... Putting one CT over the A/C circuit breaker output would probably catch most of it

#

I'm not sure I care about stuff like lights.

unborn merlin
#

wish there was an easily chainable CT.

#

like.. measurement all-in-one rs485 current clamp or something.. that you could just chain to one another and have one wire out.

mighty rose
#

I noticed that you can get DIN mounted zigbee circuit breakers.

unborn merlin
#

well yes, that's because those were designed for countries with not-trash-breaker setups..

mighty rose
#

yeah - I'm not 100% sure I'd want to change out a known good branded breaker for a random TUYA based thing though lol

unborn merlin
#

I more meant like.. shelly ones

#

tho the shelly din rail stuff is pricy

#

whenever available I prefer to get like.. not-tuya for anything mains related.

mighty rose
#

I think I'd rather go CT clamps before the replacement breaker lol

#

but it seems even those expect 240v L/N

unborn merlin
#

realistically the only half-clean way to do the breaker thing

#

would be to have a SPAN panel or something

mighty rose
#

I wonder if that's for a specific measurement purpose - or just ... well, power

unborn merlin
#

but that is.. obviously pricy and etc

mighty rose
#

the last upgrade was putting in some 10mm cable to the EV charger lol

#

too many live wires - and with that thickness, the electrician needed to use a........ I forget what he called it - basically a big ass screw terminal to bring all the lives together

#

ie from the street + everything else feeding something

unborn merlin
#

... depends on if the thing you're clamping in is specced for multiple wires and etc usually

#

but yes I used one of those big screw terminal splice things recently to modify an old spa circuit for a heat pump

mighty rose
#

that and the major stuff all got changed to 16mm cable

ocean oar
#

The terminal crimper they use for the cable in our datacentre at work is fun. Most people can barely lift it.
Takes a lot of force to crimp 500mm² cable

mighty rose
#

I'm glad I don't do much mains cable stuff lol

unborn merlin
#

... well yeah usually those things tend to be hydraulic or at the very least ludicrously-high-leverage electrical crimpers.

mighty rose
#

I grumble when I have to do fibre these days lol

ocean oar
#

That one's electric, but I've seen some massive hydraulic ones that just have to be pumped like a bottle jack

unborn merlin
#

... on price especially

#

but makes sense for anyone doing that shit on the daily obviously.

ocean oar
#

Also the torque for the bolts on the bus bars. One of the apprentice electricians is quite tiny, she could have done a pull up on the handle of the torque wrench and not done it up to spec

mighty rose
#

oh man, I got excited..... Dividend time for my Spark NZ shares..... I bought them back when they were deploying the first residencial fibre networks in NZ.... The entire dividend: $23 AUD lol

mighty rose
#

I mean, yay - I still think it was good to show my support for proper telco networks by buying part of it.

#

but eh. not wise financially lol

#

I kinda miss those days tbh lol

unborn merlin
mighty rose
#

eh - been there, done that.

unborn merlin
#

But when he started shopping around, he wasn't happy with his options. The internet speeds from AT&T were painfully slow. Comcast wanted to charge him an up-front fee of $50,000 to expand service to his home. He opted for a third route.

#

and apparently in the early days he was giving more speed than intended because..

#

he didn't have expensive enough hardware to properly do traffic shaping and etc on peoples speeds.. xD

mighty rose
#

yeah - we had 10 or 100Mbit plans - cos that's what ethernet speeds were

unborn merlin
#

only started playing with fiber in my house recently to do some backhauls between my main pc and new server that.. i still havent finished building because I;'m an idiot.. D:

mighty rose
#

yeah, 10Gbit stuff is dirt cheap now - and I can't imagine any reason for higher at homes

#

simply because its faster than HDDs, faster than SATA SSDs, and decently fast when backed by NVMe drives

ocean oar
#

I did fibre to the PC in my office at home because the hole I made in the wall was already full of copper cable and it was easier to fit

#

Singlemode BiDi transceivers that only need a single fibre instead of a pair are a lifesaver

mighty rose
#

I've been playing with bcachefs + SSD cache for tiered storage... It seems to work well

#

although for now, I'm doing 2 x HDDs in RAID1 + 1Tb SATA SSD as 'cache'

#

eventually, I'll suck it up and put a 512Gb NVMe drive or something in there as cache instead - but eh.... other more important stuff first.

unborn merlin
#

new server has...

#

a couple 1.4tb SAS SSD's.. and then some spinning rust for media

#

so should be able to saturate a good chunk of that 10g on local access.. when I get off my ass and finish designing the case..

mighty rose
#

the only time I manage to saturate 10Gbit is doing file transfers on NVMe -> NVMe

#

anything else, and the actual storage is slower

unborn merlin
#

it'll still be far faster thaan my current shitbox server anyways

mighty rose
#

I just got lazy..... I only have RAID on the two HDDs in RAID1 these days - everything else just lives on a single drive NVMe and replicated to a different server

#

big storage stuff gets its own SATA SSD as storage for the VM

#

ie pass through the entire SATA SSD

unborn merlin
#

gonna just go with raidz1 on my media drives so 2+1 spare or whatever.. the SAS ssds I have.. 4 of so gonna do mirrored groups of 2

mighty rose
#

yeah, basically RAID10

#

I went more down the path of just having multiple copies of the stuff I care about

#

SSDs and NVMe drives are reliable enough that I haven't had a single one fail yet

unborn merlin
#

yeah. and these are just enterprise used SAS ssd's.. I doubt one will ever fail with the load I put on em

mighty rose
#

so, seems better to just duplicate the data instead of trying to fix it on the hardware level

#

heh - I have a 240Gb enterprise SATA SSD here that's like 10 years old now - god knows how much data it did, and its still not even hit a reserve block of flash

#

I think these days, I'll probably replace drives cos I've run out of space before it gets near its EOL

#

eg - I have 4 x 1Tb SATA SSDs sat on my desk now - 2 still in boxes, unopened.

#

just no need for them atm

#

I used to use 2 of them in RAID1 and run all the VMs off them - but now, its faster and more reliable on the single NVMe drive

#

that being said, all VMs replicate their storage to another NVMe in a second proxmox node - so each node has both nodes disk images on NVMe

ocean oar
#

I was lucky to get some fell-off-the-back-of-a-truck specials on SAS SSDs that make them cheap enough to use for bulk storage.
12-wide raidz2 because space efficiency and sequential IO was more important than random

#

Needed to connect two 12G SAS ports to the JBOD, will do about 7.8GiB/s during a ZFS scrub

forest edge
#

I still rock sata for storage

#

good ole 5600 rpm

dusty mica
#

if you oil them, they will spin at 6000 rpm 😉

forest edge
#

the slower the better

ocean oar
#

I used to use those weird Seagate 5900 rpm drives

#

Worked fine, and for a remarkably long time

forest edge
#

Ironwolfs

#

they are 5600 now lol

ocean oar
#

They were just called "barracuda green" way back when

forest edge
#

oh

#

yea they still have those

#

those not nas drives

ocean oar
#

No, but being poor in about 2009 they absolutely were my NAS drives

#

8x 2TB in RAID6

forest edge
#

lol

ocean oar
#

Worked great for around 7 years before I needed more space

forest edge
#

I never got into that raid stuff. I couldn't justify it. mirroring.. raid1 I guess but realistically all I do is rsync once a week lol

#

in all my years (knock on wood) I never had a drive fail to the point I couldn't recover what I needed off it before junking it

mighty rose
#

gah - why is it so hard to get EV manufacturers to do an OTA update in Australia.....

mighty rose
#

Going way back to my alarm question.... I managed to write an automation using piper TTS that reads out the weather forecast for the day, then starts playing my local radio station on the "All Speaker" chromecast group

#

Probably workable - but I didn't have any massive, genius ideas on making it 'cool' lol

lavish badger
#

Meh it’s the garage I doubt she cares

smoky current
#

so a lot of people talk about how you want to try to offload as much of your smart devices from being on wifi to reduce throughput hits online, but i'm starting to wonder how much of an impact does that even have

lavish badger
#

It really doesn’t seem to hurt my network

#

Mind you anything mission critical is wired.

grizzled orbit
#

i keep adding more stuff

smoky current
#

for instance i'm looking to replace all the downlights in my house with smart ones (no I don't want to go the route of smart switches), which means i need around 32 downlights. i've been trying really hard to avoid using wifi lights because of what people have said, but the reality is I don't get how it would even be a problem

lavish badger
#

That would be a lot of bulbs. Unless they’re on some kind of linked controller.

smoky current
#

most of these devices might at most use a couple megabytes a month in terms of throughput from what i've seen

smoky current
lavish badger
#

It’s still single devices on wifi though

smoky current
#

would just be annoying in the beginning pairing them though

smoky current
lavish badger
#

More devices is more congestion.

smoky current
lavish badger
#

Plus iot stuff is usually pretty bad at negotiating speeds and too many could slow your network. Plus depending on your router it may not handle too many very well.

smoky current
#

these lights aren't going to be sending a lot of data all the time, in reality they're really not sending much at all is what i'd imagine

lavish badger
#

Like I have probably 60 iot devices on WiFi. But isolated ssid, isolated vlan and it’s all commercial grade WiFi

smoky current
#

yeah, i'm not worried about my home's hardware

lavish badger
#

Is it made by netgear or similar.

#

Cause those worry me

smoky current
#

no

#

it's all ubiquiti

lavish badger
#

Ah same here.

smoky current
#

two u7 pro's connected to a udm

lavish badger
#

Just give them their own ssid and turn off base station transition.

smoky current
#

already have a separate vlan for iot

lavish badger
#

That setting drove me batty

smoky current
#

so i feel like i'm probably fine getting smart bulbs that work on wifi

#

because...it seems like there's very very few zigbee/zwave downlights out there

lavish badger
#

That many bulbs I wonder if something like Lutron is better.

smoky current
#

lutron what

lavish badger
#

I guess the question is do you just want smart or you’re going to go like full rgb control

smoky current
#

well my ideal is a smart light with dimming/white temp and a nightlight ring

lavish badger
#

Here’s the problem I’ve had with a lot of smart bulbs. What happens when one of them loses pairing.

smoky current
#

to wifi?

lavish badger
#

Yeah. They do it a lot.

smoky current
#

what causes that

lavish badger
#

Just need a factory reset.

#

They’re cheap esp devices?

smoky current
#

yeah, don't have an answer to that

#

thing is, i don't want smart switches, mainly because finding ones that will replace the existing 3 gang switches in my home is...almost non existent

lavish badger
#

I mean it is what it is but climbing up there if they need a reset will suck.

#

Huh? They’re the same size as a regular switch.

smoky current
#

i could not find any 3 gang ones

#

unless i'm just a moron, which is also possible

lavish badger
#

You replace single switches

#

There’s no such thing as a 3 gang switch. There’s 3 singles in there.

smoky current
#

sure, but 3 single panels isn't going to fit in a 3 panel existing setup, no?

lavish badger
#

No it will.

#

I have boxes with three smart switches in there. They’re a bit deeper but totally doable.

smoky current
#

maybe i'm misinterpreting something

#

let me grab a quick photo

lavish badger
#

Please.

smoky current
#

now i think i understand what you're getting at

#

faceplates don't matter

#

harvest the switches and install them

lavish badger
#

That’s two side by side.

#

Yeah that’s still 3 single switches

smoky current
#

look...it's been a rough like 8 weeks between buying and moving into a new home

#

cut me some slack

lavish badger
#

No judgment here.

smoky current
#

then the question becomes finding a light that will work with them with a nightlight function

#

....i guess the real question is how would a dumb one be controlled by it

lavish badger
#

Best you could do I think is dimmers

smoky current
#

honestly...maybe these aren't a good example

#

then again, it would just be programming an automation for the switch mode to turn on the nightlight

#

except the temperature couldn't be controlled then with these

#

i think for a light with temperature control, dimming, and the nightlight it would have to be smart outside of the switch, no? @lavish badger

Hi everyone, I just set up my home assistant yellow with a CM5 and a SSD for storage. I would like to store much longer history than the default setting. Ideally I want detailed 5+ year (I have around 50 between sensors and switches). I want to avoid to have an external server to hold the metrics. What do you suggest? Influx DB integration? Can I make HA just use influx DB and not the default one? Is there a better solution?

i made an automation that forces me to get out of bed after my alarm, my morning routine automation enables this automation and sets the datetime helper to the current time when the morning routine ran (which is when my alarm goes off)

this automation repeats from there every 2 minutes and only turns off once i get out of bed. the notification that's sent uses the alarm channel on android so it actually plays my alarm sound rather than just a normal notification sound

I'm not mathematician, like you claim to be, but a long term change in average CPU uses from 6-7 to 4-5 is about a 20% relative change. It may not be significant without tailored benchmarking that includes a number of load types but may indicate improvement in the system. I was curious if this was indicative that performance improvements had been made. From casual recall of many changes in the HA ecosystem it seems that there has been an effort to remove busy-waiting. Do the HA developers use benchmarking and/or use code profiling to identify and remove inefficiencies?

well you can run two cordinators as long as they are both on diffrent channels

dreamy pelican

dreamy pelican
#

Im currently using zha

#

Can you do 2 instances of it?
