unborn merlin
#

yeah. that's entirely doable

lavish badger
#

Basically the space on those two timers, but two entirely seperate circuits since it's two pumps.

#

I wouldn't even mind if the Wifi control part were outside the box.

unborn merlin
#

and.. yeah it'd probably sorta have to be usually.. hard metal cases aren't well known for y'know

lavish badger
#

That'd do it.

unborn merlin
#

... wifi signals

lavish badger
#

I have a wifi light switch in there, somehow it does...OK

#

But optimally...yeah

#

That'd handle the pump load for sure

#

And then I'd need a 120v Wifi relay to trip it, looks like.

#

Which is easy.

unborn merlin
#

a shelly or something is my opinion.. ๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

That was one suggestion I read.

unborn merlin
#

reminds me I still want to put a current clamp of some sort on my new heat pump..

lavish badger
#

How come?

unborn merlin
#

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ curiosity on how efficient it runs

lavish badger
#

Newer heat pumps are insanely efficient from what I've read.

unborn merlin
#

its not a ground source unfortunately.. but yes

#

thing barely needed to spool up to chill this attic

#

but hey such is a properly sized goddamn unit

lavish badger
#

I should consider a heat pump here given our climate...but gas heat is so damned cheap

#

Even though we barely need it.

unborn merlin
#

if I had a chance to go ground source.. it'd be even stupider. ๐Ÿ˜›

#

then its just

lavish badger
#

Next year I really should swap out my AC units

#

They're old, R22 and just gulp power.

unborn merlin
#

lul

lavish badger
#

Like...my power bill for July was nearly a grand.

unborn merlin
#

you can thank openai and fellow slop companies. ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

as the power producers are more than happy to pass that cost to you

lavish badger
#

Arizona...it's like...$150 in winters.

scenic radish
#

jesus, that seems high in the winter too

primal laurel
scenic radish
#

electric bill from last month (Chicago, US) was 210 USD

unborn merlin
#

yes thats the point these days..

#

if you're doing anything more than installing a simple window unit.. (which you can also get heat pumps of these days..) you'd be an idiot to go AC-only instead of heatpump.

primal laurel
#

last year the AC used about 1000 kWh, or about 200 euro. That supplied all heating and all cooling

forest edge
primal laurel
primal laurel
#

no this is how it works

unborn merlin
#

its how it should work

#

but its not how it actually works

primal laurel
#

this article just confirms what I said

lavish badger
#

Not exactly the model of efficiency.

forest edge
#

lol that is why

unborn merlin
#

which they also get to just heft onto all consumers

#

isntead of just y'know.

The ai parasites

lavish badger
#

Here we just let Intel and TSMC use all our power

#

I'm sure there's some AI

#

Admittedly, my pool pump idea was sort of about saving power...right now the pumps just run when power is cheapest, 11 PM - 5 AM...but at least one day a week when I go out there and drop in chemicals, clean the filters, etc, I need it to run for like 2 hours during the day

#

So if I just had an HA button "clean pool" that ran it for two hours that'd be great. Otherwise I forget.

unborn merlin
#

its gonna be funny when the ai bubble eventually bursts and then.. the costs stay the same

primal laurel
unborn merlin
#

because thats just how things work these days..

lavish badger
#

Well of course, corp profits can never go DOWN

#

That's how shareholders have to cut back.

lavish badger
primal laurel
lavish badger
#

But if overall demand is lower, that's unused grid capacity.

#

Unless the designers are idiots.

primal laurel

when you buy capacity, you 'get' a certain bandwidth. It is not specified how and when you can use that bandwidth

Woa professional Coachella ticket scalper? That's good money.

#

I don't even want to think about the housing market. We are never moving.

forest edge
#

yea same. had plans to build a house but with all the nightmares in both costs and quality that dosen't look realistic either

#

I knew I should have done that before covid

lavish badger
#

That's the only reason we were able to do a house.

#

Well, the biggest one.

#

We paid $520k for this one...it's now nearly $900k

#

Like...how.

#

Also I'm pretty sure the original owners were colorblind

forest edge
#

fancy

scenic radish
#

That looks like it would be blinding during the day

forest edge
#

there is a house near me listed for 800K and you can tell it was some 1980's redo. there is noway in hell it is worth 800k lol

#

when I talked to the builder about our house the shit on the inside like quality of cabinets, counter tops, flooring etc is where ALL the money goes and it makes sense BUT spending over a million on a relatively small house just to have shit that won't deteriorate from the humidity in the air is ludicrous

lavish badger
#

At night, but we toned it down a bit.

forest edge
#

and that doesn't even take into account the high odds the foundation and framing of the house will likely be a structural hazard

lavish badger
#

Humidity? What state?

forest edge
#

just ambient humidity like anything over 45% lol

lavish badger
#

Arizona we're more likely to get dry rot lol

#

I had my AC unit drip condensation all over that kitchen ceiling. Wrecked the paint, but with a fan, it dried and I just had to re-mud and paint it, no mold, nothing.

forest edge
lavish badger

The drain pan cracked on me

#

That was a fun and expensive fix, too

your ac unit in the attic or something?

One of the air handlers is

It's a weird thing we do here

forest edge

But it's not purposefully shaded.

forest edge

should purposely shade it. it will help

lavish badger

It's also nearly 20 years old now

#

So...we'll maybe do more when I care about it.

forest edge

the harder the unit outside has to work the more condensation you will get

It wasn't the quantity that was the issue.

Fun fact: AC was originally invented as a dehumidifier for warehouses and such, and the cooling properties were a "oh, btw.." kind of thing.

lavish badger

Decent dehumidifiers contain almost the exact same hardware as AC, it's just arranged slightly differently.

#

But they still have to expell heat somewhere.

forest edge
#

yea but it's not like super heated air so it's not much of a problem

I wouldn't use it's air output to keep warm lol

yeah I love my new heat pump for A/C

but for dehumidification? it sucks a bit because god fucking damn it will drop the temperature hard and fast while drying.

forest edge

many of the modren units I have seen have a "dry" setting

ocean oar
#

I have an automation that switches the heat pump from aggressive heating, to cooling and back every 30 minutes, for when washing really needs to be dry overnight

#

"dry" is just "cold + high fan speed", it's not really a "smart" feature

unborn merlin
#

yeah I think next year I may put in a separate dehumidifer thing that does the cool and reheat stuff.

#

no, dry is cold+slow fan speed

because you want the air to get very cold as it moves over the coils..

do you ever clean the hose?

don't really see a point of a networked pet feeder. the dumb schedule one's work just as one would ever need

ocean oar
#

Can add extra feeding to the schedule if I'm going to be home late. Notifies me when the food in it is low. Alerts me if I've accidentally knocked its power supply out (mine has backup batteries) so I can fix it rather than the cats not getting fed

scenic radish
forest edge
ocean oar
#

Our cats get a mixed wet/dry food diet. It's more dry food replacing evening wet food if we happen to not be home

forest edge
#

well they do make wet food dispensers

#

but that be gross lol

ocean oar
#

Also batteries might be a standard feature, but that doesn't stop me not noticing it's unplugged and the batteries dying

forest edge
#

mine flashes if low on food, on battery backup

#

but I guess if one really wanted they could modify it to make a sound or even add network capabilities to a dumb unit

In my case, the value of a networked one is that I could make it yell at my dad through a telegram bot. But we free feed, so all I'd need is a low food sensor.

Also, good to know, do not buy Bosch...

# desert cave yup!

I don't recommend the Bosch 500 series. It's dumb.

Sadly, it seems all appliance manufacturers are going this route. Where will we be in 5-10 years next time I need to buy a new dishwasher? Probably even worse off.

Okay..... I don't think this is normal. HA's become very sluggish lately, struggling to even load normally from the 1st try ... gotta Ctrl R a few (20-30) times w/o any cache to force it to load... Not alright.
This is a VM with plenty of resources (host is TR3960x with 256G ram, nvmes, etc)..... Has anyone seen something similar on your instances?

#

Even now the CPU usage is hovering between 20-50% and nothing is loading, not the dashboard, not settings, not anything I try. Right now I'm trying to open http://homeassistant.local:8123/hassio it's the 50th "hard refresh" ... all I see is white background with the HA logo, nothing else.

0 support in this channel period just for future ref

dense bramble
#

Wasnt looking for support - was just asking if anyone else spotted such a pattern at around 30 Jan - 7 Feb.

#

If at least 1 person didn't - I could then look into what I have instaled, remove (break) stuff until I find the culprit (which would take time). And if other people have seen similar trend - we can easily compare what we've got installed.

primal laurel
#

That is support

dense bramble
#

Support is "hey, someone fix this", not something I plan to determine / fix by myself with just a little info from 1-2 people. "Seen this? No. / Yes." would be sufficient.

#

Just FYI.

forest edge
#

it doesn't matter what we think individually. what only matters is the overlords opinion and what you stated would be treated as support lol

I get why a thread is more useful though. I scroll through discord and see something where I might be able to help and just hadn't gotten around to properly articulate an answer or a reasonable follow-up question.
