Why it matters: GitHub, which has operated largely independently since Microsoft acquired it in 2018, has become increasingly important to Microsoft's overall strategy to woo developers to Windows and Azure, as well as to its suite of AI tools.
Github has been important to woo developers to Windows?

"Smarthub IIโ€™s hybrid architecture initially allowed local MQTT and HTTP REST access for advanced users to build custom integrations. However, firmware version 3.2.1 introduced encrypted communications and closed the local API by default, forcing encrypted WebSocket tunneling through Futurehomeโ€™s AWS infrastructure. Key implications include:"

#

Death Rattle ๐Ÿชฆ

tawny cliff
#

Yeah Futurehome is a Norwegian company (I'm Norwegian, figured I should support Norwegian innovations). Their huge mistake was selling the smarthub for a fixed price and that's it. They had to provide support, patches, new features etc. and they didn't really have a revenue stream. So they recently declared bankruptcy. The new owners keeps the brand running, but they changed the business model to a subscription based one.

Basically all Futurehome owners (a lot of them in Norway) were suddenly forced, out of the blue, to pay for a subscription in order to access their home. Failure to do so meant you lose access to the app, which in practice means you are locked out of your own home. People are furious including myself. So I went ahead and bought a Home Assistant instead.

You may want to look something like this
Custom Email Notifications
iPhone Users
For iPhone users, you can set specific sounds for different email accounts or VIP senders:

Customize Notifications: Go to Settings > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications.
Select Account: Choose the email account you want to customize.
Set Alerts: Turn on Alerts and select a sound for new emails.
VIP Option: Mark important contacts as VIP to assign them a unique notification sound.
Android Users
On Android devices, the ability to set specific sounds for individual email senders may vary by email app:

Gmail App: Currently, Gmail does not support custom sounds for specific senders. You can set general notification sounds for the app.
Third-Party Apps: Some third-party email apps, like FairEmail, may allow for custom notification sounds for specific contacts. Check the app settings for options.
General Tips
Shortcuts App (iPhone): You can create automations using the Shortcuts app to play a sound for specific emails.
Check App Settings: Always explore the settings of your email app for any available notification customization options.
By following these steps, you can enhance your email notification experience based on your preferences.

unborn merlin
#

well not impossible.

lavish badger
#

No, but not fun.

unborn merlin
#

it'll just require cutting a hole in the wall to fish ๐Ÿ™ƒ

#

actually.. there's a...

lavish badger
#

And not worth the effort.

unborn merlin
#

youtube video that I am reminded of

#

that.. pulled the molding off the bottom of the wall

#

then used a saw to cut the wall below the top of it

#

and then fished the wires below that

#

and then put it back on without needing to spackle and etc..

#

so that is a possible option.

lavish badger
#

There is an alarm panel fairly close, so I know there's clear access to the attic outside the rounded area

unborn merlin
#

then again what sort of motherfuckers got round walls that just makes it harder ๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

I'm more just annoyed they put a round room in my house

#

I can't resist a good deal

#

Even with a round room

tidal bronze
#

Deadbolt with external power?

lavish badger
#

If you did the powered part on the strike side it's much easier.

#

But that also leads to the potential scenario of if the power goes out you either need it to be failsafe and unlock, OR you're locked in the house if power fails.

#

Yeah. I mean, there are other ways out but they involve the garage doors.

#

Have I ever opened a window in this house...

#

I want to say I have.

tidal bronze
#

I too dislike anything battery but level lock I am happy with. I don't like keypads and stuff on the front entrance. Now only if I get to use the front entrance ๐Ÿ˜†

lavish badger
#

Why no use front entrance?

tidal bronze
#

Out there. Always garage door

unborn merlin
#

not a deadbolt; just a handle style.. battery powered.. lasts.. fucking a long time

lavish badger
#

Mine is the Wifi one...I really should have considered Zigbee/Z-Wave when I did everything in this house but I did not

tidal bronze
unborn merlin
#

helps that it doesn't have to shove a deadbolt around; just flick a solenoid to energize

lavish badger
#

I think the Wifi lock needs new batteries every 6 mo, so it's not TOO bad.

#

I've found it also won't work correctly with rechargeables, the 1.2v is too low

unborn merlin
#

yeah it doesnt like rechargables either

#

I've been tempted to build a lithium iron phosphate pack that I can stick on the edge of the door or something and wire it in but.. ehhh

lavish badger
#

I suppose if I were really ambitious, I could also use a 3.7v lithiium battery pack with a USB charging circuit and boost it up to 6v.

static schooner
#

Solar panel + light from across the room

unborn merlin
#

or just grab this and never think about it again.. ๐Ÿคฃ

#

tho a latching adapter would also work out

lavish badger
#

LOL yeah that's gonna fit on the door

unborn merlin
#

6v power brick plugged in at all times; if the house has power its running off wall-power.. otherwise it falls back to battery

#

sounds like you're not determined sir.

lavish badger
#

Also, that's marketed at a 6v, but it's variable so you'd still need a voltage regulator in between

unborn merlin
#

sir I've designed pcbs I think I could handle it.. ๐Ÿ˜›

#

god if I could build a house.. I'd be putting fucking conduit in fucking everywhere for low-voltage wire taps around places and etc

lavish badger
#

Yeah, if I ever do one from scratch, conduit everywhere, and like...8 cat6 cables plus fiber to every room

unborn merlin
#

nah.. dont need that many.

#

not if you have conduits. ๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

Yeah but if I'm pulling cable I'm doing as much as I can ahead of time

#

Our attics here are like....150 degrees.

#

The less I ever need to get up there the better

unborn merlin
#

... yeah I'd be building with a fucking basement

#

for one ๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

Those don't exist here. I miss basements.

unborn merlin
#

build more houses less stupid. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

lavish badger
#

It's the soil, basements don't work

#

You have to spend a ton engineering them here

unborn merlin
#

it can work.. unless you're in a fucked area like florida

#

in which case why build anything

#

that state is a cesspool for anything long-lived...

#

๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

Arizona, so better than Florida. But very loose, sandy soil.

unborn merlin
#

still doable; but yes.

#

... in fact for that hellhole of a hot state it'd really be ideal.

#

since y'know.

Ground... cooler... and etc.. ๐Ÿ˜›

lavish badger
#

You'd think.

#

I've seen them here, they're just rare.

#

That'd require water.

unborn merlin
#

they don't flood if you build them properly.

#

and arizona..

water...

#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

I work for/with someone whose yard is a fucking swamp but they also have a full-sized floor/basement in their house somehow despite how fucking sopping wet the yard gets due to drains having been removed.

#

so.. its doable.

#

just not cheap garbage building style

#

which is y'know

lavish badger
#

We almost bought a house that was built into a hillside. That would have been awesome.

unborn merlin
#

shoulda done it. save on cooling costs.. ๐Ÿคฃ

lavish badger
#

But it also would have cost something like $950k

#

I ain't got that

unborn merlin
#

ideal house: like 1 floor above ground.

2 floors basement below ground. all the space, none of the heating/cooling costs. ๐Ÿ˜›

#

but boy that'd be horrendously expensive ๐Ÿ˜„

lavish badger
#

That's kind of what this was.

#

Let me see if I can find it

unborn merlin
#

what a steal! /s

#

๐Ÿคฃ

lavish badger

So yeah, $230k just to get the lot and partially completed house, like another $650k to finish it as designed.

#

The secret was that I shipped a hexeditted mirc that totally removed the ctcp version reply, and he didn't. If you didn't or still don't, know, for a while, mirc could not ignore ctcp version requests. It always responded to them. Always. Which is why it was always so ridiculously easy to flood someone offline who used mirc. Eventually mirc added its own flood protection, which basically rendered protection scripts like mine completely obsolete.

as a student of computer science i was on good terms with the main sys admin, so he allowed me to set up a local instance of the original mud so students could play in the terminal rooms. text interface only. the condition was that during the hours with highest pressure on terminal access it had to be shut down. it got very popular. and one guy in particular didn't like the shutdown hours so he set up his own and tried to get all the players over.

the thing was... he didn't understand setuid/setgid and file permissions when he installed the thing so he left a big security hole.

in that mud you could play your way to wizard rank and the mud admin was arch wizard. the poor guy tried everything to block me from his mud, but i was in when i wanted to with full admin privileges. but my rank was listed as god. i could see by listing processes he ran that he tried searching for god in the source code without finding anything. and when i saw him trying to look for my processes to find out what i was doing i made a wrapper so the only thing he found was a process called "birger playing god again".

eventually he gave up the whole thing in frustration

now, it would certainly help if you'd back that up with entertaining television

Hey people, hope it's not a bother im asking here.

I have some cameras that are recorded to my nas, but i cant access them directly

Does anyone know some sort of oss project that can stream from folders and files and maybe also have a timeline?

I can get the name formatting handled without issue, I just don't know any project like this

I saw people using something for this on YouTube at one point but the yt history is horrible and doesn't save most things

The only camera software I know are things like motioneye or scrypted or that uh I forgot the name but it had a special camera card in hacs for it whose name was changed to advanced camera card, but I don't think any of them can do this

unborn merlin
#

most projects that handle cameras handle them entirely including the recording part.

#

... Which for scripted requires paying them.. including fees per-camera.. (which y'know.. fuckoff this is my local hosted thing?) or frigate is the other project.. but you'd have to not have the cameras direct record since frigate would be doing that part instead.

civic rivet
#

yeah i figured maybe there's some oss thing maybe already made for something like this as having a hardware nvr is not really an option

#

yeah but I don't think you can actually view a camera from the latest recorded files, at least I didn't find a way last time I used it

#

will set it up again and see though

summer depot
forest edge
#

all it is is nvr software

civic rivet
# forest edge ? sure you can

just to make sure I am explaining well, I have a camera that saves videos in a folder on my local server, and I basically want an interface to be able to go back 2 hours to see what happened without having to open every 1min length file manually, and to have its "live" display w/e is the newest file

I can't access the camera feed itself, but figured hey since I have it might as well try using it somehow

even the cheapest garbage has ONVIF or etc support in my experience.

#

I installed a bunch of 13-15$ cameras... they all work mostly fine asaide from some.. pain in the ass stuff with VLAN setup.

tidal bronze
#

Talking about NVR did they release the new frigate?

unborn merlin
#

new frigate?

#

is it a destroyer now? /s

tidal bronze
#

Ain't gonna jam a beta with cameras

unborn merlin
#

whats the significanat difference?

tidal bronze
forest edge
unborn merlin
#

ah.

#

well thats neat, no more having to setup a bunch of separate shit

tidal bronze
#

Why? you into Rizz now?

unborn merlin
#

except the llm part

#

the LLM part can fuck off.

#

๐Ÿ˜„

tidal bronze
#

Local LLM is not a thing for camera stuff. Total waste of time.

#

From my tests Gemini FTW

civic rivet
#

I have an older xiaomi camera which does not have onvif or any sort of similar access and when you cut external network you can't view it from the app anymore just what is saved on the nas

i don't think it's that bad to try not to waste technology that's perfectly functional and money during a time when my country's economy is collapsing

unborn merlin
#

its not "perfectly functional" when its a piece of garbage that doesn't support standards. ๐Ÿ˜‰

#

"had to"

#

did you give it to them in a donut box?

#

"wanted to" is the right term. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

"had to" is with pigs just getting footage straight from ring without requesting shit from you.

#

so the answer is "Probably not, no lmao" because this is not how almost any NVR software works. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

forest edge
civic rivet

I see, thanks for the info!

unborn merlin

that feels excessive for camera allocation.
