#

Just got the email this morning that Amazon is officially removing the skill from the Alexa skill store

lapis cairn
#

At least we have an answer to the question of how many AI's does it take to fix a light bulb, the answer is it can't.

simple pagoda
#

haha

peak slate
#

Have sengled bulbs, but don't use Alexa, and do use zigbee

simple pagoda
#

I'll say this...somehow Alexa + is more infuriating than the last iteration of alexa

peak slate
#

Lol

simple pagoda
#

They made something as simple as setting and cancelling my alarm clock (like 99% of what I used her for before) twice as difficult "Alexa, stop asking me to confirm if I want to cancel the alarm" "Sorry, I don't know how to do that"

#

"Alexa, set an alarm for 8am" "Sure, let me think about that. You want an alarm for 8am, right?" YES ALEXA...GOD..."

stuck anchor
#

hasn't sengled wifi been one of those things you shouldn't touch even with a long pole? better replace them with something more sane?

peak slate
#

(assuming they don't have a local API in this case cause Alexa, lol)

lapis cairn
#

Speaking of, anyone hear any news on the samsung tv's that won't work because some server is down?

simple pagoda
#

I would agree normally...but when they were like 10 bucks for a pack of six bulbs...they are hard to resist. And in terms of functionality, up until recently, they did work quite well.

#

But you ARE right.

lapis cairn
#

Sounds like they still do, just not with Alexa.

simple pagoda
#

I was also a victim of the Insteon collapse

#

That one was hard because they made a fanlinc adapter that didn't require a common wire for old houses to control ceiling fans...practically no one else made a solution like that.

#

But I still have the "old fix" working through HA and my original insteon hub...but I'll be SOL if the hub ever dies.

#

I didn't jump on board with the new crew when they got re-aquired

tawny flume
#

I use sonoff ifan with esphome to replace my fanlinc insteon

simple pagoda
#

I'll need to get that info off you

#

Do you have the same issue? Old wiring/no common?

#

Sorry...common=ground

robust flicker
tawny flume
#

Oups miss understand the common was the ground . Does your entire wire as no ground?

simple pagoda
#

Unfortunately yes. House was built in 1946

#

Would cost a small fortune to upgrade

robust flicker
simple pagoda
#

I've tried RF remotes with mixed success

#

Like voice enabled RF blasters etc etc

tawny flume
#

Technically neutral was an insulated ground but that not legit to use it as ground

robust flicker
#

@simple pagoda But in your favor, older houses also tend to have metal pipes, so there's your ground.

robust flicker
simple pagoda
#

oh don't get me started....a lot of that copper I've had to replace with pex...another costly endeavor

simple pagoda
#

Plumbers have quoted me to have it all redone and I'm like "Dude, I only have two kidneys"

robust flicker
#

At least it's pex. My place is 100% PVC and CPVC for the hot water lines. And much of it is late 1970s to early 1980s pipe, as well.

#

Brittle as a MFr

simple pagoda
#

I should take pictures..it's wild seeing the mix of pex to copper to pex to copper

robust flicker
#

I had to replace a faucet, and even being careful, managed to snap the cold water line at the floor level. That was a pain in my posterior. Made even worse by finding out we don't have a water cut off valve and I had to go dig out the meter to shut it off there..

tawny flume
#

I bought countrry house without ground insulated wire with kind of paper. I replace the entire wire because its really not safe and dont wanna hazardous fire. I'm professional electrician and i see some mess with that kind of wire risk of fire

simple pagoda
#

I have a small half bath that flooded and was redone about 2 years ago. Has a super fancy faucet that my BFF gave me (he won at a raffle/he worked at an HVAC company)

tawny flume
#

The risk of not having a ground connection is 1 for safety...if there is a fault if you touch the faulty device it is everything that does the ground and 2 if there is a problem like a wire that the insulation is cracked because it is aging and that they conduct from one to the other it acts as a load and the circuit breaker or the fuse will not trip and hence the risk of fire

simple pagoda
#

It's super extra for this little bathroom...i forget who makes it

simple pagoda
tawny flume
#

Only a few explanations from my point of view, but everyone manages the risk as they see fit. If your insulation looks good and not cracked, it's a lesser evil. The imminent danger is only if your insulation deteriorates.

simple pagoda
#

You never know what your wires look like in your walls...especially after 80 years

#

I do know about...25 years ago, when they installed the central AC (before my time) they did a little big of an electrical upgrade..but certainly not all throughout the house.

tawny flume
#

The other thing I was forced to change the electrical wiring was that the insurance companies didn't want to insure me with that wiring. It was painful but I changed everything haha

primal laurel
#

It's a fire hazard so that makes sense

glacial knot
#

Ehh, uninsulated PE is fine
Anything else though? rooD

robust flicker
#

As for why electric instead of natural gas, we're in the southern US, so heating isn't really a primary concern here. And the 40s to 50s was all gung-ho about electricity, and how it was so much safer than using gas, wood, or coal for heating and cooking.

primal laurel
#

it is much safer than gas and especially coal or wood

#

now if only you installed reversible AC

robust flicker
primal laurel
robust flicker
#

My parents home was retrofitted from its original central ac/electric furnace to a heat pump.

robust flicker
primal laurel
robust flicker
#

Except that's not really true.

#

The statistics you're talking about also include small units, like for window units, RVs, vehicles, etc.

primal laurel
#

it is true if you look at the sales figures

robust flicker
#

But modern homes, at least in my area, have preferred heat pumps to ac/furnace systems since the 1980s.

#

The issue is that until fairly recently, the only way to get any real heat out of a heat pump was to have a ground-installed heat exchanger, and that made its adoption in the colder climes take off much slower.

#

Down here where heating is an afterthought, however, the heat pump is king.

#

That's the biggest issue with statistics from the US.. there's always a huge disparity between the various areas, so overall statistics don't really tell the whole picture.

#

And, let's face it, the vast majority of population centers are NOT in the southern US.

#

So, any national US statistics tend to favor the northern areas, and yes, they haven't embraced the heat pump as widely as we have down here.

primal laurel
#

my statements are also not about any particular area

#

if you look at the whole US, the vast majority of AC units that are sold are non-reversible

#

which is just a missed opportunity because it is a relatively minor hardware upgrade

@fathom sparrow matter over wifi seems solid enough. no idea if the lack of matter features vs what the unit can do has anything to do with the protocol or just the device but it gives me climate control over the window ac unit as well as it's own internal temp sensor it uses to turn itself off etc

scenic radish

huh, I have a total of 1 device that behaves that way

fathom sparrow

My device has a delay, but I'm not sure if it's thread or the device

forest edge

well this ac unit over wifi dosen't seem to have any kind of delay at least

scenic radish
#

From what I've read, it relies on mDNS, so an mDNS repeater should work

fathom sparrow
#

I also have zigbee and had to spool up a second HA system to treat as my HA matter device

I have 2 very powerful antenna devices zwave and zigbee right next to each other and the zbt-1 couldn't compete

I bet it would work if you || switched to #homeassistant-container ||

so I had to make a second HA on a Pi4 I had lying around. Put HA stripped back, thread, and matter on it. And it works pretty well on the other side of the house near the other matter device.

You use to be able to buy carb rebuild kits for small engines such as lawnmowers etc all day long, off amazon or other sites etc. Now you can buy the entire assembled carb along with other shit like new fuel hoses, filters etc for only like a couple bucks more than the kits you use to be able to buy. to buy a whole replacement carb was way more 10 or so years ago but now they are dirt cheap?

#

That's an easy win for space, all mine run at 10 but 15 shouldn't be bad

#

Though I think all my cams are 1080

I have Frigate retain 30 days of object detections though with 5 seconds before and after

I have motion detection events in my feed but I record 24/7

#

And have a little under 30 days now in capacity with the latest camera addition

scenic radish
#

Yeah I retain 3 days of constant recording

#

But I have "only" 2TB of storage

peak slate
#

Ah, I have an 8tb purple in mine

#

Though I used the second bay for the jetkvm, which I may need to swap up at some point to add a new drive

scenic radish
#

My server is an optiplex 3050 micro, so it only has a 2.5" drive bay

#

I think 2.5" HDDs max out at 4 TB, but I could be wrong

#

Oh 8TB 6TB I guess

#

Great news. My office motion sensor is working again

#

Re-organising the room so we can have 2 desks in here, the PIR couldn't see my because from where I'd moved the desk it was just behind the corner of a bookshelf

#

Moved it ~200mm higher up the wall, everything is a-ok again

viscid cedar
#

So not sure if this is the perfect place for this but I'm kind of new to this. I want to set up a simple smart home using Zigbee my current plan is to put together a small server using true NAS installing the home assistant docker and then using one of the Zigbee dongles to connect lights, buttons for the lights water leak detectors and door sensors, eventually setting up automations to turn the lights on and off when I leave and come home. Am I on the right path for this or is there other hardware or software I need to consider?

it to be like that

could dm I suppose?

or do we have to make a thread?

that is OK, the alternative is to create an thread

Honestly I'm fine with homekit since it's local and HA can act as a controller for it

woven turret
#

Yes

#

But...

#

Its closed source 🙂

#

Also is there any reason that Assist would keep cutting out

glacial knot

Most of my smart devices are essentially appliances
Tivoization and all
So the local control part is the more important bit 🤷

Even if I'd prefer open firmware

Homekit is just proof there's no argument not to offer local control

How's the HA community feeling about Thread & Matter lately? I'm in the unfortunate (fortunate) situation of moving, and most of my stuff is hardwired so I'm leaving it... and I get to restart my smarthome journey (other than smart plugs) weeeeeeeee.

#

Right now I've done a ton of Zwave in-wall switches, Zigbee smart plugs, tried to avoid Wifi whenever possible. Lurking a bit, seems like that's still generally the same advice, buuuuut... With Matter and Matter over Thread showing up more and more, I wonder if I should be prioritizing it.

#

Sorta the vibe I was getting too. I have only 3 Matter (over Bluetooth) devices today and they're relatively flawless, but... I have a few Thread devices and they are very problematic (mostly because I don't have enough Thread devices so the mesh is very fragile). I could fix that with more of them, but ehhhhh. Was debating buy a 2nd SkyConnect to give it the Thread firmware.

#

I'll have to take a look at that. My Zigbee mesh is great it's just overloaded because of how many devices I have.

#

Oh wow it's a multi-protocol dongle, love that. It's not buggy like the SkyConnect is in multi-protocol mode?

iron granite
#

It isn't. It has two dedicated radios.

eternal zinc
#

Awesome, thanks! Maybe I'll pick that up.

#

I've never migrated my ZHA network, but the steps look pretty easy.

iron granite
#

I think Thread might get a little boost, as IKEA is starting to transition to it with its Dirigera hub.

eternal zinc
#

I'm eyeballing SmartWings shades for the new house and they offer every protocol so I'll have to make a decision soon.

#

Right now I have Wifi (Sunsa) blinds and SwitchBot (Bluetooth with a Hub 2 that speaks Matter over Wifi) curtains and they all work fine, but the Matter protocol for curtains is literally just open/close/position. Over Bluetooth, the curtains do way way more (light sensing, humidity, battery level, etc)

As for thread, I'd really like to see some decent battery-powered remotes, and more than just 1 or 2 vendors with products in various categories.

so nice getting to sleep in some days

mortal walrus
#

Hilariously, as far as I have seen, the Aqara W100 Climate Sensor is probably one of the best battery powered matter over thread remotes available right now. (it's better at being a remote than being a climate sensor, imo)

eternal zinc
#

Yeah I've got it paired both ways using an ESP32 BT proxy. It works great!

eternal zinc
#

(I ended up going back to Aeotec buttons which cost too much but work perfectly)

mortal walrus
#

all the aqara stuff i have is matter over thread, and it's been perfectly fine in terms of reliability.

eternal zinc
#

Nice. Their locks are apparently well-rated by some review sites (not Amazon). I need to buy new door locks for the next house, and door locks are in a bad state right now.

#

I either go Zwave and have to use KeyMaster, which I know is beloved in the community but based on other apps that control door locks (Yale, Nest, etc) looks absolutely terrible with all the entities and automations it creates.

Or Bluetooth, where I have to make sure there's a proxy close.

Or give up and use Wifi. Aqara locks do every protocol in one but their reviews on Amazon are baaaaaaaaaaaaad so I wasn't sure.

#

Anyone use a Matter lock? How do you manage codes in that case? Does HA have support for that or do you have to use the manufacturer's app?

mortal walrus
#

my understanding is that ha matter has basic support for locks, and they work, but not all functions are available. You should probably ask in #1284966353798697001 if you want some answers from people with experience using them.

eternal zinc
#

Yeah I might start a thread there.
