I thought lan parties in the US died nearly 10 years ago

#

fun fact, I actually attended the very first one ever done here in KC

#

it was a major pain moving the desktop and monitor and stuff.. never wanted to do it again afterwards lol

arctic quarry
#

LAN parties in the 90s holy shit

#

lugging CRTs

#

BNC networks

forest edge
#

hell my monitor at the time was like over 70lbs

arctic quarry
#

best part about BNC networks:

DUDE: man, I've been up for 295 hours straight
GUY: ikr
DUDE: only eaten three popcorn kernels
GUY: mood
DUDE: imma go sleep
(turns off computer)
ENTIRE ROW: WTF HAPPENED TO THE NETWORK

forest edge
#

they play older games

arctic quarry
#

I mean it is a great social event

#

especially if it's also a demo party

raw tulip
arctic quarry
#

-# long live the scene

forest edge
arctic quarry
#

consoles at LAN parties sounds like less of a thing to me, but I'm biased

forest edge
#

cause the last few I have seen videos of makes it seem like most people went for the console stuff

raw tulip
#

Predominately PC gaming, but some people bring consoles.

arctic quarry
#

(a.k.a. very old)

#

guess it depends on the flavor

#

tournaments etc

forest edge
#

older consoles have kind of made a blip back in popularity

#

with current games I can understand it lol

arctic quarry
#

lol yeah

#

it's almost unfair, given that the "retro" scene has like 30 years of cherries to pick lol

forest edge
#

its sad. I watch those videos where they compare older games against their modern remakes and how they highlight how the older version had way more features and details etc than the modern one

#

games should be way better than what they are

arctic quarry
#

yeah, but it's almost impossible

#

you can't scale "fun"

#

so you scale "content" instead

forest edge
#

they were comparing like game physics etc

#

older games shouldn't be better

arctic quarry
#

physics isn't inherently fun

#

you have to make it so

forest edge
#

not really the point

#

it's like air conditioning in cars.. at some point they just came standard

arctic quarry
#

I think I get the point, but I'm saying, the things our industry focuses on right now isn't necessarily conducive to games being more enjoyable

#

lol, I say "our" industry, I've been out for like 15 years now

forest edge
#

all the stuff they learned how to do back then should be in the base blueprint for stuff now lol

arctic quarry
#

I completely agree

#

but it's also what I'm saying: very rarely did you have the luxury of "realism" (by any definition) in older games

#

so you instead chose an approximation, based on how much "game" it felt

#

you can obviously make "realistic" jump physics, but it turns out the Mario-style jump is more predictable, and "games" more

#

now I'm pretty sure all modern games still use Mario-style jumps but

forest edge
#

aside from 2d side scrollers.. i'm more depressed we don't have more Ready Player One level of games. I don't mean that just being limited to VR but the advancement of it

#

Star Citizen is really about the only game I have seen yet that pushes it

arctic quarry
#

in what capacity?

#

not too familiar with it beyond the memes

forest edge
#

and it's still not where (i think) game levels should be

arctic quarry
#

what is missing?

#

in your opinion

forest edge
#

freedom? we have procedural generated games but look how lack luster they are in terms of graphics and stuff to do.. referring more to (not minecraft but the space game)

#

no man's sky

arctic quarry
#

"procedural" is kinda one of those traps I'm talking about tho

#

it's incredibly hard to make good procedural content

#

because of how fragile the fun factor is

forest edge
#

even if the game sucked..

arctic quarry
#

there are ways to do it, but like

forest edge
#

the abilties etc should be there

arctic quarry
#

basically, by crafting a single golden path, you can play through it and rearrange things until the flow gits gud

#

kinda like writing music

forest edge
#

games are still restricted either in space, or content or abilities etc

arctic quarry
#

if you relinquish that control, you're kinda just playing the numbers

forest edge
#

you still have to pick what matters most to you rather than have it all

#

Greed for the past x amount of years is the cause. you can't read a single article about gaming without seeing that but it's still sad

#

churning out as much for as little as you can

#

these days game studios are treated like netflix shows

arctic quarry
#

yeah but it's also systemic

#

like I said, it's trivial for a producer to say "let's make more assets"

#

everyone knows how to scale it

#

but scaling fun is a lot harder

#

so you get these bloated shovelware games that spread themselves too thin

forest edge
#

Star Citizen is heading in the right direction (not the money sink part but the other stuff)

arctic quarry
#

I literally cried playing through all the assetstacks in FFVII Remake

forest edge
#

why can't there at least be more of that lol

#

instead we got 1

#

for like what? 12 years or whatever

arctic quarry
#

again, not too familiar with Star Citizen but it's been very slow going, has it not?

#

that's kind of the only way to do that kind of game

#

right, 12 years

#

I guess fun scales with time, then

forest edge
#

it's slow cause they are milking money

arctic quarry
#

and 12-year dev cycles are obviously ridiculous to a AAA studio with quarterly reviews

forest edge
#

why they just got slammed over thier profit earnings this year

#

but the "freedom" aspect of the game, the abilities and stuff to do + graphics has been in it for almost the whole time

#

I honestly do think Ready Player One level of gaming should be available at this point. probably would have if it weren't for money

#

being the drive

#

like i said, not really refering to just VR

#

the movie showcased freedom

arctic quarry
#

it's a movie tho

#

like, I hate to pull rank, but "a game where you can do whatever you want" is first-year rookie stuff. there has to be GAME in every direction, otherwise it'll just become like those AI "games" that show you 5 seconds of something that looks amazing but there's nothing there

forest edge
#

look at individual made games on steam. you will often see those having more freedom than studio created ones

arctic quarry
#

ok I think maybe the term "freedom" is poorly defined

forest edge
#

not sure how else to describe it lol

#

been thinking of a better term but not found one yet

arctic quarry
#

if we're gonna be nerdy about it, it's about exploring a space, right? so if you can jump, you wanna be able to jump onto everything you see. otherwise, it feels "un-free"

forest edge
#

not just go anywhere, but do pretty much everything

arctic quarry
#

then, if you're presented with a challenge that cannot be overcome by jumping, you either need more skill, or a better jump. this expands your space

arctic quarry
forest edge
#

not be restricted. least not nearly as much as wgat we have

arctic quarry
#

but it can let you explore a certain space freely

#

like "what if I can combine jump and shoot"

#

etc

#

you can think of it in terms of like

#

dimensions of freedom or w/e

forest edge
arctic quarry
#

ok again, I think I'm gonna claim that with 20+ years of gamedev experience, I have had a thought or two

forest edge
#

think outside what is on the shelves

#

what is that VR chat that blew up? been out for awhile but pretty much allows people to be in avatar and to make thier own games etc?

#

is it just VR Chat?

#

that game, least from the few videos i have seen kind of shows some of the freedom

#

why can we get that far, been that far for however long that's been out but not gone beyond that?

arctic quarry
#

you have to be really specific here though

#

like what does "going beyond" actually imply?

#

what do you need more of?

forest edge
#

why can't a game like that be available but in like a cyber punk style for console/pc??

#

yea I think my term "freedom" is the issue here

#

it's not procedural? like everyone in the same damn instance?

#

the video I saw make it look kind of like minecraft. where people just takes over spaces and build stuff etc

#

video(s)

unborn merlin
#

it is a lesson to be learned here...

#

🙃

forest edge
#

argue huh?

#

is that what's going on?

#

if you all like where things are. 👍
but as someone who came from board games to pinball, pong, atari etc etc.. I wouldn't settle for what is

#

and how sad is that?

#

game released in 2011. thats sad to me

last cedar
#

Sad that nothing else has had the "same effect" since 2011?

forest edge

#

I do kinda find it odd that whilst many other games have come and gone, I still play minecraft quite often

last cedar
#

If that gives any hints 😄

forest edge
#

hell I run an SC2 community and I stopped playing that game over 10 years ago.. yet there is no shortage of players..

#

pretty sure at this point it's 98% east and 2% westerners tho

#

you euros sure like to play old stuff

#

I played the tempest rising game which is suppose to be the "new" modern RTS. game didn't even come close to older RTS like SC and C&C and even Dune (and that game was shit)

not refering to "fun" either

we pull over 20

how is there any kind of comparison there?

tidal bronze

California contributes significantly more to the federal government in taxes than it receives back in federal spending, effectively making it a "donor state". In fiscal year 2021-22, California provided roughly $83 billion more than it received

and so you donated more than what you have.. maybe you should get your wife on here to better explain this for you lol

Anyone seeing dashboard weirdness on since updating to 2025.7.4?
When I go back to my HA tab, all of my entities rapidly update (couple times a second) and I can't click on anything until they catch up with real time

weak musk
#

nope

forest edge
#

Hmm bought an ac window unit for the workshop that has matter yet my wifi reception in the workshop is complete shit

fathom sparrow
#

I set up matter for the first time this weekend

#

and let me tell you

#

it's a POS

#

likely because I already have zigbee

forest edge
#

be cool if it was like switchable

#

like you could choose for it to either be wifi or thread

fathom sparrow
#

I set up the thread one

#

that might be why it was a PITA

#

the biggest issue was that there is no feedback mechanism telling you things are working or not

forest edge
#

if I ever bother with improving my wifi in the workshop i'll let you know if wifi is any better

fathom sparrow
#

Can't you just run an ethernet cable outside?

#

I'm not sure why, but I'm assuming it's a detatched garage

forest edge
#

I have ethernet in the workshop. just no wifi extender with two ports

#

I have a poe camera in there so it's being used on that atm

fathom sparrow
#

oh, don't you have unifi?

forest edge
#

lol no

fathom sparrow
#

ah, I thought you did

#

either way, just get an unmanaged switch

forest edge
#

thats decoy and qf

fathom sparrow
#

unifi is nice because they have POE unmanaged switches with 4 ports for $35

forest edge
#

well the ac unit dosen't have lan, so need an extender

fathom sparrow
#

yeah but I guess where I was leading was a unmanaged switch and a WAP

forest edge
#

yea.. oh I know money solves the issue..

lavish badger
#

Unmanaged? Oh noooo

fathom sparrow
#

that's what I do with my parents dock. we ran an eithernet from the cottage to the doc and I put a box out there with a switch and wap. internet for everyone

scenic radish
#

But can be used as unmanaged if you don't adopt it (I'm pretty sure)

fathom sparrow
lavish badger
#

It's unifi, not edgeos?

#

I'm just a fan of if my network is already all managed switches, why introduce unmanaged.

How did they become the SME?

odd aurora
#

I'm buying an electric awning and I want to automate it with home assistant so it extends and retracts with the weather if there's someone outside, most of it seems pretty damn easy the bit I'm struggling with is finding a reliable outdoor presence sensor, is that someone anyone else has come up against and found a solution?

unborn merlin
#

(Mmwave goes through walls and all that..)

odd aurora
#

oh it does?

#

huh

weak musk

unborn merlin

do you get wifi through walls?? 🙃

lavish badger
odd aurora

I wouldn't have assumed it went through brick but yeah I guess that makes sense

lavish badger

LOL

unborn merlin
#

you said it again; you're gonna trigger missy.

lavish badger

Yeah, just reed switches I believe.

#

Put the sensor at a stationary point, the magnet on whatever moves.

odd aurora
#

well I was looking at the tuya mmwave option but obviously to be used with localtuya to 'fix' it

#

so everyone outside would need a magnet in their pocket?

unborn merlin
lavish badger
#

Hey, I had a good meeting with them at CES this last year. They obviously like using their cloud, it's not perfect, but it behaves well enough.

unborn merlin
#

not door sensors.

lavish badger
#

Oh, I see, not to see if it's open or closed.

odd aurora
#

nah

#

so if it's raining and there's people outside the awning extends

#

if it's raining and there's not people outside it stays retracted

unborn merlin
#

cheap option if you already have it would be.. frigate person detection.. etc..

lavish badger
#

Could also do it with a camera if that would indicate the different entity types.

fathom sparrow
#

Anyways, I'm pretty sure I'm mixing up managed and unmanaged devices

#

I meant managed

forest edge
lavish badger
#

Ugh I swear....I leave home for a week, and everything breaks. Also my mother in law turned off every manual lamp and light switch in the house.

odd aurora
#

risky?

weak musk
#

Honestly a weather station would probably be better

forest edge
#

go outside to see just how bad the wind is and the awning comes out and rips off lol

lavish badger
#

Electric awnings don't usually go near people, they're suspended off the building.

odd aurora
#

oh, yeah well it would be hooked into a weather station that can measure wind speed

#

that's also how the rain detection will be done

unborn merlin
#

I mean some awnings (expensive ones with an upgrade) have wind sensors too..

odd aurora
#

but that's easy enough to add as another rule

unborn merlin
#

Probably.. I mean

#

you could probably setup... a mmwave sensor under the awning in a box or something attached to a shelly 2PM (roller shutter controlling style) so that it could be semi connected..

odd aurora
#

oh, I'm just gonna steal the ir codes from the remote and send them out myself

#

reed sensor isn't gonna have the range

unborn merlin
#

... again he's trying to sense people not the state of the awning.

scenic radish

you could use a contact sensor

yes

it's for my inverter. I'm trying to measure incoming AC vs outgoing AC to determine how much solar I'm producing after all the inefficiencies

forest edge

you may have to go with another brand then for clamp. does it have to be wifi?

split grail
#

yeah my plan was shelly and emporia with esphome flashed

#

shelly for my solar stuff and emporia for general house stuff

forest edge
#

well the athom might be able to go esphome rather than tasmota

split grail
#

I had my eyes set on shelly since they do a lot and seem to be pretty known

forest edge
#

so the shelly addon plus has a voltage meter input. not sure it works with clamps tho

lavish badger
#

Is it suitable if you just wanted to monitor power draw on your main legs?

Seems like you'd need quite a few clamps otherwise.

split grail

yeah I only need to for power going in and out

emporia is for my distribution panel

I'd love something that monitors power "signatures" but seems like all those are $200-300

split grail
forest edge

I don't know what it's limitations are for monitoring power. I know it can do like batteries etc

for that matter the uni could operate in the same way

I don't think shelly has JUST a power meter with no other features

you are kind of limited on your options

so then what one's for what? I'm so confused

#

can I use either one for the em gen3 then?

forest edge
#

well it has that special connector on them so your limited to that unless you want to do some slicing

split grail
#

they both have them

forest edge
#

there you go

split grail
#

and the EM comes with a 50A one but I have 60A service so I wanted to get a second 120A one

#

I don't even know if you can split them like that or if you have to have one or the other

forest edge
#

don't have an em to see but they usually have adjusts in the gui

#

you could email shelly and ask them lol

#

at this rate you would be better off buying a smart breaker the system connect to lol

they really don't make it easy to do anything

split grail
#

oh that's fun there's something else. The Gen3 is only compatible with the 50A and 80A transformers, not 120A like gen 1 can

For reference the plugs are differently between the 3em and pro 3em

I need to get around to figuring out how to get my car in there

#

I just need to trade mine in for an electric at this point

lavish badger
#

Hmmm. So my wife has requested if we're going to make HA in charge of most of the house rather than just Alexa that we have a tablet to control things...but I'm certainly not going to invest in an iPad. Anyone have a favorite cheap android tablet they like that isn't total garbage?

lone dagger
#

A lot of people buy refurbished devices overall for that. Totally possible the #1284966353798697001 tag Recommendation may find the answer for you, or you can post it up there. Or ask in #the-workshop - but you'll probably get more DIY answers there.

lavish badger
#

hmmm good idea.

lone dagger
#

I'm using e-ink displays for my family, but 100% they are not cheap for larger panels and they are still incredibly time consuming to build up.

#

Android tablets on the other hand have the ability to use the app as a launcher now, so it's stupid easy to set things up.

lavish badger
#

That was kind of my thought.

#

Easy, user friendly.

#

I have tested a few tablets in the past, and I'm not sure for HA purposes, but for example like the $50 tablets just are incredibly underpowered CPU wise.

#

Running things like the Wyze client even bogged them down.

lone dagger
#

I think that's why I went e-ink tbh.

#

Low powered intentionally.

lavish badger
#

I like that idea. Like...Android powered eink?

#

Or are you just using a browser?

lone dagger
#

No, mine are all ESP32!

lavish badger
#

Ah, hence the additional setup. Very low power though.

lone dagger
#

Yep.

lavish badger
#

I'm not super concerned about battery life...we have USB outlets literally everywhere in the house....by the couch, at the kitchen island, the dining table, etc

#

So as long as my wife doesn't drag it around...other option would be a wall mounted one.

#

Just permanent power.

lone dagger
#

The biggest thing you'll run into that I have seen the community complain about is that batteries in tablets tend to poof up when plugged in for too long.

lavish badger
#

Non intelligent charging circuits, I'd imagine.

#

I have an older iPad Air I have mounted to a stationary bike I made into a poor man's peleton, and it's been on a charger for years, seems fine.

#

Actually...I wonder what the oldest iOS HA will run on is.

glacial knot
#

yea, there's some android tablets without batteries these days

#

if it's intended to be entirely stationary, those are neat

lavish badger
#

I'm more than handy enough to remove a battery and put a capacitor in place.

#

Assuming it's worth the effort, of course.

#

Or would it be a resistor...not sure how those charging circuits work

glacial knot
#

@lone dagger what do you run on those esp32? I have an 7" TFT based on ESP32 and ran openhasp on it for a while, but the setup (Especially because it's dual sided with HA and openhasp) annoyed me so I stopped using it

lone dagger
#

ESPHome works for a good portion of e-ink displays built on ESP32 boards.

#

I used their compatibility page to see what brand would work best.

glacial knot
#

makes sense. yea, I think this one doesn't work with esphome due to some issues with the display driver

#

I looked it up a short while ago, and all I could find was an external repo with some patches that still had caveats

lavish badger
#

I was thinking like $100ish

glacial knot
#

anyways, time to spend 240€ on LED strips rooH

lavish badger
#

Because more LEDs is always good

#

I'm slowly running out of places in my house to install them lol

lone dagger
#

A little flashy since Discord lowers the resolution/fps but MY MEETING AUTOMATIONS WORK.

lavish badger
#

I love those types of displays.

#

Very nice.

#

LOL, I actually have one in our garage...the whole idea was to welcome someone home with a scrolling message...but I found out...it breaks the garage door openers.

lone dagger
#

My absolute joy at something this simple working lol.

lavish badger

If you put enough tech into it, essentially it looks like magic to our monkey brains.

I moved. I want to put a 5m LED strip into one room, angled towards the ceiling. As main light source
not entirely sure which type of LED strip I want though, so I'll just order 5m each of 2

lone dagger
lavish badger
#

I still need to see if I can get my old "Red Alert" trigger working with HA. But that relies on Alexa announcing things which I think is broken.

Facing out? What kind of heathen doesn't diffuse LEDs?

#

Awful.

glacial knot
#

My test setup with the hue strip I had around
Phone roughly at my eye height to take the photo

lavish badger
#

Ehhh even that bothers me a bit.

glacial knot
#

But the led/m on this is way too low

lavish badger
#

Denser would look more uniform.

glacial knot
#

Yea, it's not great
The strip needs to be even more indirect, so I want to try with way higher density

high remnant
glacial knot
#

yea, cob is one of the variants I want to try

#

also, with the full 5m instead of 2 or so I got here, I can probably also reduce the brightness and make them less of an issue to look at directly

weak musk
#

So our A/C failed yesterday. When the tech came to fix it, he walked down to the finished basement to look at the furnace/fan unit-- the automated stair edge lighting came on and he literally stopped on the stairs turned to me and was like "Wait wait wait, do the lights know what direction you're walking on the stairs?! This is the coolest thing I've ever seen in a client house!"

#

If he wasn't charging hourly I'd probably have gotten him pulled into the HA black hole

because the dog stays behind?
