I know vaping is basically being a human test subject and people consume vast quantities more nicotine that way
Same with vaping
It's "better"than smoking if you only do enough to be equivalent to how much you used to smoke, problem is people vape way more, and the companies encourage it
the white ones
Worse. More chemicals
Some wild docu out there about it, and the original designer of the vapes trying to just quit smoking
Especially the flavored stuff
The marketing towards young people is just disgusting
Oh yeah, and how they don't actually know what chemicals actually are in there
π€·ββοΈ
Chemicals are supposedly fine here 'cause EU but yeah...
yassssss I did stop drinking a while back tbh
Gotta make a buck some how right, capitalism at all costs
is it beta time?
Proper vapes use much less nicotine too
Not according to science
I mean its like trading one bad for another bad
I mean how about quitting π
I did
That's the way
No filter better? lol
Just go cold turky, everyone i know that tried to use alternatives either failed or got stuck on the alternative lol
they contain heavy metals which give you all sorts of nasty cancers
Just go for a motorcycle ride! Way more healthy
what's the difference
do it brother
Reputable vaping fluid? That don't exist. Medical monitored maybe
uuuuuuh
You can create the part that creates vape yourself. The coil and cotton can be much higher grades and the proper liquid is basicly propylenglykol
Antifreeze you say
And glycerin
that's my guilty pleasue ngl
Maybe if you tip toe and vape it much less but they already proven vaping even the same amount as you smoked is 1.5x worse than cigarettes
Not quite, chemicly similar but it's reaction in the human body is deemed safe. It's used in loads of foods. Mostly sweets
There is a nice YouTube video about it but on mobile and at car dealer so can't search for it
I've tanken out the DB killer soo
For context I'm not vaping i just want to be informed when getting into arguments. And I have that argument a lot at work lol
has it been decatted?
also how the fuck
its a 125cc?
how hell does that set off car alarms lol
what'd you feed it?
2 Stroke?
even my 800cc isn't that loud
Rice burners...
thats crazy
you know me
nah I wanted to know the sound and I'll put it back in .. sometime
π€£
Improper back pressure is a thing just sayin...
nah its fine
its only the slip on
How do say? Yesn't
haven't decatted it
it may or may not have a slight effect
its not decatted so π€·ββοΈ
It probably only has benefits considering the exhaust is still rather slim and not perfectly flow through
If you'd stick a 3" pipe on each cylinder it goes to shit
I mean the OEM exhaust is like a whole bloody topbox
Any engine I've worked at had no deficiency with less backpressure
What's more important is flow and how exhaust of cylinders help clean out the others
Venturi effects and shit
They're still alternating in firing
I know some ER docs who would disagree, lol
I am dating one who disagrees with me
My mother worked as an ER nurse for a while, and had a rule of no motorcycles under her roof because of it
(of course this was in the 80s soo.. probably a lot better safety gear now)
I had the bike first so it wasn't a suprise
all the gear all the time
I keep getting this caveman urge to buy a $800 125cc from amazon and ride it on ||private roads|| unplated
currently riding a 2-4 horsepower electric bike
currently riding a one humanpower pedal bike
Electric bikes have encouraged younger and younger kids to be obnoxious on public roads
traffic is slow as balls though that's the only thing holding me back
?
I saw one dude a couple of days ago doing a wheelie on his through stop lights and everything
He must've been going like 30mph
doesn't justify it, but better to be an idiot on a bike than an idiot in a car
our traffic signals are very unfortunate so sometimes I'm slower than a pedal bike that blows red lights
being held back by traffic on a bike
In the bike lane
this is NYC, there's not enough room to safely overtake if traffic is bad
this
hold my white monster
Gotta give me something to honk at aye?
Overtake on the right and wonder why I'm so close to fucking killing you
the traffic lights situation is so bad
I often play leapfrog with analog bikes running red lights
Packed roads cars left and right and some bike going through the middle or the far right ...
they'll pass me on red, I pass them on green till the next red light 10s later...
sometimes I just give up and follow them for the slipstream
if it fits
Not a fan, had so many close calls
meh
I do it all the time
the teslas are the ones that are sketch the others are fine
Middle is fine mostly but nobody expects you on the right
I mean its not allowed in germany iirc
ah its allowed here :D
the cyber truck is the most ridiculous road vehicle ever I have to stand up to see past them
Overtaking on the right is a big nono. Bike or car.
either at like the most left lanes or down the middle on a 2 lane road
Thankfully not allowed here
cars in general have gotten way more dangerous over the past few years, but the cybertruck is truly on its own level
yeah, can't see shit
if the cover is on you literally can't see anything (from behind the CT)
I am just hoping the EU also bans those F250s and F150s
Everyone has to drive a tesla then it's safe /s
I hope not
except for the fact that they've gone up substantially in size and weight
they're a pain to get past in a jam
can't filter past a cybertruck either they take up so much room
so I end up tailgating them
stood up
ridiculous
Heya all, just wanted to introduce myself. Not working with HA yet, saving up for a new NAS/homelab.. but joined the discord already anyway.
no the main issue is tht they drive on the ACC and that means they are in the middle of the lane. The unattentive driver (genuinely always) has no clue I am trying to get past
like the most left lane is 2M wide and the car is 1.99M wide
Where are you supposed to go then? Only because some bike is bored and wants to jump in front.
just slightly to the left like everyone does
I mean I dont get mad when they dont
its just a thing I have noticed and this is an autopilot/acc thing
I'm being a dick on purpose now but, what do I care if you can't cut in front?
I'll get past anyway lol
not many people are dicks, some are
you just have to wait for an opening
Hello! π
Lol
(i don't drive anymore, so i wont be An issue :p just couldnt resist the joke)
Like in the decade of riding it happend 3 times that someone was being difficult and you shrug and just go about your day
oh no not at all
I'm on your side, i do make space etc. But I'm also one of the "sportier" drivers that goes for gaps with his small french baguette and sometimes bikes are in my way lol
it really depends on the situation
i hate driving and i'm glad i barely ever need to
if you floor it in a traffic jam you're special :X
You'll miss it when you arent alowed anymore.
I Hated it aswel, and didnt drive Often.. but it sure does give you a lot of freedom .. even if you don't use it
I've only got car dudes in my circles, no daily bikers, so i was genuinely interested in your POV. Which is why I escalated that discussion a bit
i enjoy the freedom of having the choice to walk, bike, take transit, or drive
hey I could also be in front of you spilling DSG and/or engine oil π€·ββοΈ
I'll throw some gears at ya!
as long as you're somewhat predictable you're fine. I am well aware someone could and WILL dive in a gap so that's the 'scary' bits of riding in a jam
erratic driving usualy goes hand in hand with indicators that you can somewhat predict
What do you mean?
physically larger and heavier, worse visibility
Just swapped to the second car needing oil change so back at the shop lol
Compared? Generally visibility has improved I thought
Even now with back up cams etc
compared to cars where the hood height wasn't absolutely absurd
Unrelated, Im looking into wich OS to go for when setting up my homelab.. unraid any good/easy to pick up..? Ive been using Synology for years, but im fed up with the outdated hardware..
I mostly use it as media server, but when i have the option i want to go wild ^^
tbh I am running HA on the cheapest I could find
That's the SUV trend. Nothing different just more people driving them than cars
safer for everyone in the car, less so for other road users, particularly those not in cars
Yeah, but my current NAS is on it's last legs and im investing in a bigass piece of hardware i a couple of months.
96gig of ram, 11 bays for HDD.. π the works.
You can hide a grown man in these deadspots lol
SUVs... which have become much larger and heavier
don't threaten me with a good time
and trucks which have also become much larger and heavier
I think there's a channel dedicated for setups and hardware but I cannot remember which one
except for hood heights / designs which have become much less safe for pedestrians
I disagree. These car SUVs are smaller than like the old blazers etc. you sure your not thinking of like the surbubans?
Oh its #1284966353798697001 iirc
Ill check it out.
Just trying to blend in the casual talk here. Been a bit on the lonly side for a while now and looking for People with shared intrest.
Cant leave my house most of the time, so energy and automation are my go to ^^
Even the half ton trucks are smaller than older ones
sure
sedans, yes. SUVs and trucks, no
I mean I can share my hardware list if that helps but I wouldn't recommend it if you do not want old hardware lol
I'm 6' 0" / 182 cm, and the hood of some stock trucks and SUVs are at my shoulder height
I Know what hardware im going for. Im just going between operating systems
Those are not suvs
Im 1m93, and got destroyed by a sedan a couple of years ago. It's not always the size of the car ^^
agreed, but it's a factor
It's no secret that vehicle have gotten larger. For increased passenger safety at the cost of visibility. Some take it to an extreme but with modern sensors that become more and more standard accidents decrease
True
I think design is just throwing your eye
We went through the oval era to the box one
Wich i don't get, considering aerodinamics
Try #1284966540617449515 and we might be able to help find something in between this mess lol
Thx
Ill look into proxmox, considering ill be using it as a media server/download station mainly.
Thanks for the tip
Rim sizes have increased and if you couple that with 4x4 trucks that come with knoby tires that will raise the height a little too
4x4's use to just be sold with all terrain tires but these days they rolling out with mud slingers
Most "jeeps" "offroaders" "4x4" are just parking lot queens
Irony of me being at a automotive shops right now lol
There are far more choices of tires now then there has been
It's amazing how weird and off putting that was when it was introduced. Truly polarizing compared to econoboxes
The lowest one is the kind most rangers here use and they actually go "offroad" lol
Now it looks almost like any random car
Nothing comes close to that
Looks like something @clear ferry would drive
That's the US pendant I'd say
On mobile my gradient never moves lol
Nah you're just nomaGT on mobile
You can turn it off on mobile
NomaGT is actually one of my gaming names lol
Can't believe oil changes are over 50 bucks
How many quarts? Full synthetic?
6 quarts and just synthetic is 56
Dealers usually also charge more over other places
As if name brand oil is worth it lol
Depends on the application
My wife got rear ended in this several years back. Hit her hard enough to shove her several feel forward with her brakes locked. Dude's air bags deployed... The car that hit her was a Chevy Corsica. It was totaled. That Isuzu ran fine for half a dozen more years.
Had a trailer hitch on it, and used it to pull dad's boat a few times, or any number of trailers. That hitch punched thru the radiator and cracked the guy's engine block. He broke the ball on the hitch. No other damage to my vehicle.
Cause it wasn't a frame against frame collision
It was, however, the likely cause of one of our two stillborn children.
Impact didn't get absorbed... Really tragic to hear.
They do say newer vehicle frames are weaker. Not sure if that's true or not
She went to the ER, and they checked her over. no problems. 2 weeks later checkup, no. Heartbeat. She was due in 2 months. They induced labor, and we buried him next to my grandfather. My son's name: Sean.
He'd been named for 2 months already.
They're softer in the direction of travel, any other direction and theyre stiffer
Well alot are not solid one piece as well I think
Thanks. That was around Christmas 2003.
Any frame that has 2 or more pieces are weaker
The cell around the passenger get the focus
Anything else is supposed to crumble to absorb the kinetic energy
From the windshield to the numberplate, it can just let go that's fine. Yeah the car is totaled but the part you're sitting in is fine and that's the most important thing
Strong framerails from the front to back are the main thing every manufacturer got rid off to get better safety ratings
Now it's all about a safety bubble around the passenger and the rest is optional
Well when it comes time for me to get a new truck I'll be sure to be extra picky lol
Maybe I'll get a cyber truck so @tidal bronze will want to ride with me
He can lend the quad on the bed
Come on now. Really? In that POS?
But it's your favorite...
You kept telling us how much you admired your neighbor that got one
So stronk
Wish they moved out. Ruined the entire view with that.
Oh, are we showing garbage mods? Here's my first case mod.
Just a bit of southern engineering, NBD. π€£
On par with the cybertruck
Hey now, my body work was good, unlike Tesla...
Awesome edges! Wanna do R&D for Tesla?
A little work and you could make it look like HAL from 2001 a space odicy
I haven't had that machine since like 2006. π€£
Ah ! Missed opportunity!
What did you use to cut it? A butter knife?
It was a Phenom II.. when that was top of the line. Lmao
Whenever in doubt there's epoxy.
Looks like metal cutting shears?
Tin snips. π€£
Yup
Mate karate chopped his case to fit his cpu cooler
GPT ane Gemini needs to learn a little more about music assistant π
yup. And I was pissed while doing it, because I measured before ordering it.. but I forgot the standoff distance of the motherboard. π€£
Wife was like "so what now?" And I took that as a challenge. π€£π€£
Classic, like buying a GPU and then cutting the drive cages to fit
That's a common theme at my place too.
wips our snipper ill Tell you what now!
Yep. "better not use my good kitchen shears or I'll cut you with them."
"Yes dear"
Sounds accurate
I don't think my wife knows what that is π
Oh you poor dear.
I've put on 40-50 pounds since marrying this woman, and it's all her fault. If she couldn't cook as good as she could I wouldn't be so fat! π€£
My wife says the same the thing about me.
Well, I gotta run for a bit. Later
Make sure you don't touch those shears!

I hope we never switch to plastic boxes
an outside enclosure that can be set up in a varity of ways is pretty common. its never likely to be set up as a main residential panel though
but plastic outside? that dosen't even make sense
manly scissors... i use these for everything. even sewing.
Amazon.com: Fiskars Cuts+More 5-in-1 Multi-Purpose Scissors https://share.google/AYOTChDUDob2cyLYg
tbh this is also a sign of (undiagnosed) ADHD
why not? as long as its rated for the use case
no plastic is uv proof
(like the getting sleepy part of caffeine is FOR SURE an symptom$
same
i am amazed i havent crashed out
i am currently oh 70mg so
well "proof" is a strong word. but its resistant enough for the use case and expected life span
i read that becoming sleepy from coffee isn't uncommon for those who are not used to drinking it
wtf is the expected lifespan?
it should be "forever"
that might also he true
i was at a point i was chugging 5 redbull
and 10 coffees
usually about 15-25 years for most electrical work. as long as its properly installed
think about that.. you want to replace your entire panel every 25 years? lol
and worse at 15
you almost piss monster lol
hell the breakers and wire in the panel lasts longer than the panel lol
my caffeine intake correlates with a decrease in actual output
if i am all amper up ill get dick done
historically in the uk. theres not alot of wiring that makes it past the 30 year mark before needing to be updated for one reason or another. although i think that will probably go up soon. and yes there are cases of old stuff lasting a lot longer but you would likely need to have it updated if you wanted to sell
well that is kind of scary lol
any german car
not overally. its not that stuff gets dangerous (although obviously some stuff does) but its just updates in regulations and wanting to expand and use new stuff etc...
mine didnt even get past 30 days
well that can't be right. you are saying every 30 years you all have someone rip out all of the wiring in your homes?
that would be expensive
historically its been about that but i suspect it will be increasing now.
although if you want to add new stuff solar/battery/ev/heatpump stuff then you might have to replace much of it
that would not fly here
one of those things. if you want x you need wiring to be y which requires the panel to have z
you might have to update stuff
there are still homes down south with working knob and tube put in in the 40's lol
I had the last of my houseβs knob and tube ripped out when I moved in
for sure, uk still has some really old wiring in some places thats grandfathered in but means that they can have certain modern stuff and also might cause insurence issues etc...
well i think you all should boycot plastic electrical panels none the less
plastic outlet boxes etc is fine but not panels.. especially exposed panels
wouldn't be as bad if they weren't exposed like the one in that vid
that one you linked is not really a residential thing.
pretty much all residential panels are metal now.
technically i think you can use "non-combustible plastic" but its easier to just use metal
no I don't think they are. it might be in some counties but there was a documentary on those where one town did not have that requirement
conductive isn't the issue.. melting, burn through
metal dosen't burn through. unless you stuck a fork in where the breaker was
as in it help keep your house from burning down
yea about that
good luck actually getting back what you lose..
again
look at market costs for what etc
good luck getting back what you lose
it may resemble like the old one.. but it won't be lol
just saw a video of some type of limber they were using in framing where the dude crumpled the 2x4 as if it was cardboard lol
we gotta get the 2nd little pig to come explain stuff again?
its legitimately scary how they build houses now
uk building regs are pretty strict. some stuff might be wrong/bad looking/etc... but its very rarely dangerous these days
because we allow down to the city level to make their own regulations and laws there is no strictness to ensure that quality of materials nor quality of work is held to an acceptable standard
like treated lumber.. we can't even get access to some types of treated lumber where I live and there is an actual difference
injected vs submerged
<@&330946878646517761>
Awww, I was too slow

I can post some spam if you want
the internet never sleeps!
Boooo! One of my IKEA Zigbee power monitoring plugs just stopped working. Had a load of washing on @ 10a and looks like it's shorted after about 30 minutes. Only like 3 months old.
is it just a monitor plug or does it have a relay?
Has a relay, but relay is never used. You can't generally find plugs that don't have a relay.
inductive loads through relays cause problems.
there are monitoring only setups but your right. they are not super common
Might be time I taught myself how to make an ESPHome CT clamp. Got plenty of ESP dev boards lying around.
athom make power monitoring only plugs running esphome if you want something out the box which is wifi
Yeah, that was gonna be my other option. I just liked the idea of reinforcing my Zigbee network with the Zigbee plugs.
if your willing to wire in line i think shelly have a monitor only in gen4 range (zigbee supporting) now
Yeah nah. Need an electrician for that here. CT clamp or inline socket only. Thanks though.
i have gen3 versions of those wired inline on appliances but I am able to do it myself
Have considered getting my sparky license many times so that I can do my own work, but lot of effort/commitment π
where are you in the world?
Australia
ah, I don't know much about regs there. i am in the UK, thought we were the only ones to use "sparky" judging by the chaos i get when i use it around here π
the athom plug is probably a decent option. i think they are one of the few to make AU plug stuff too.
although its only a 10a rating so if you have a 10a appliance it might be pushing it
I actually talked with an Athom rep a while ago, they are technically capable of 15A, but only rated to 10A apparently.
We call electricians sparkies too in the US, at least my area...
However, I have already had the Athom plugs before with the relay and they all died within 2 years.
to be fair, its usually the relay that goes on smartplugs
maybe it was just the mainland europe crowd that was confused then
Possibly, even likely, due to translation weirdness lol.
In keep forgetting People work,
Ive been retired due to medical reasons for some years now & the wife world from home
I mis my old job though
I want to semi-retire early. Too many projects, not enough time. Do some contracting/part time work and just work on projects until I become senile.
If you're looking for an easier approach to the same result the Emporia Vue2 is esp based and can be flashed with esphome
I also like this one: https://circuitsetup.us/product/expandable-6-channel-esp32-energy-meter/?v=0b3b97fa6688
Thanks, but as I just said I'm a) in Australia (where Emporia is not available and you need an electrician to install anyway) and b) need a single device monitor rather than a centralised monitor. Easiest option is definitely relay-less Athom plugs, but doesn't look difficult to just use the CT sensor component of ESPHome either.
remember that a CT has to go around a single wire (usually live) of the AC power. not over the entire device cable so you have to get to a point where they are separated. e.g. in the wall or in the device
Oh really, I did not realise that. Well that kills that idea then. Guess my only option is Athom relay-less plug.
relay less sounds like a waste of money
never tried it but i imagine if you put it over both legs of AC then it will probably read 0 as the fields will cancel out
can see plenty of reasons for it to be used:
less to go wrong.
cant accidently switch something off you only want to monitor.
can measure higher inductive loads.
according to the athom site it still limited to the same 10amp max
cost + lack of the relay part + same limitations.. just sounded like a waste of money to me
I get the reasons for it
but dosen't make it sound any better
almost be more worthwhile to get something like what tedski linked above and just ct the individual breakers
cause ct clamps have the higher rating
10amp "rating" might be the same. but if its an inductive load a relay will cause problems long before that
Except circuits aren't individually wired and I want to monitor devices, not circuits.
well thats still doable with a little math
How?
if you can monitor the other stuff i guess...
what exactly are you trying to monitor? i didn't catch that part
Washing machine. 10A inductive draw.
so why go with anthom with a lower amperage rating? why not some other brand that goes up to like 16 or more? that way the relay wouldn't trip?
Because they don't exist? Again... AU.
and if it's a washing machine, you can pop the cover and get access to the individual power lines for use with a ct clamp easy as pie
Yet again, no I can't. Not legally.
you can't get a shelly in au?
Not without an electrician to install it.
they make plugs
Nah, no plugs for AU from them that I've ever seen, just in-walls.
cal never made au sound like it was so restrictive
also the "not legal" part how would they ever know if you did it yourself?
Insurance is pretty intense here. If anything happened, investigation would find it and you'd have to produce an invoice.
well 10amp restriction is stupid for a relay or power monitoring device
I guess realistically your washing machine shouldn't even come close to that even if its rated for it but still
I agree. The Athom rep I talked to said that their stuff is technically capable of 16A, but they only get it rated to 10A.
It definitely does. 240v 10A sockets. Frequently see 2.3-2.4kW while it's heating water.
you put a kill a watt meter on it?
or something similiar
weird it would tap out the rating of your actual socket
Circuits here are generally rated to 20-30A because our voltage is pretty variable (230-250).
Which is why it's frustrating that smart sockets are generally 10A. But probably also why they are supposedly meant to handle up to 15A.
i imagine the peak consumption during heating stage is actually resistive load
as the heading element is resistive. but the motor that make it go spinny is the inductive load part which will be less
make friends with a sparky. its such a tiny job they might do it for beer π
well if the anthom sockets can supposedly handle up to 15amp why go for the relay less one??
If it was the relay that died, one less component that could cause an issue.
i wonder if thats the brand
they can probably only handle like 2a inductive which may be the issue
I'll reach out to them and ask.
at this point I would just get your electrician cert on the side and just put the good stuff in lol
Heh, has been a dream for years.
i considered getting some quals in uk so i can do more stuff. but its such a pain. you basically get stuck super early unless your actually working as a sparky...
I have seen stuff on people trying to do it. they end up having to start a company and "do work" for friends/family.
I get that classroom is not the reality of real situations but its really painful if your just looking to do stuff for yourself safely and not work in the industry
Oh fuck that. Would need to do a full 4-year apprenticeship to get licensed. Can't just learn it. So dumb.
is this your socket? https://www.amazon.com.au/Shelly-110-230-Digital-Electronic-Compatible/dp/B0835YG5HK
so many damn plus i can't remmeber what the au one looked like lol
yup, looks like your about the same as here
Nah, think that's UK. Ours is like China's
Sheesh, all I need is a screwdriver and some pliers π
nah that plus is one of the eu ones
technically it's not insurance covered for us to install stuff behind the sockets etc as well in accordance to most insurances
but we do it anyways
what you can't see can't hurt you
I don't make the rules, but I enjoy following them
its fairly relaxed here for stuff like switches/sockets. i know what i can do and i probably push the line on it a little to be fair
I need to look up my local code. not sure I can leave the shelly units behind the switches when I go and sell the house
I haven't actually put anything behind switches or outlets, just swapped them out for smart versions
oh
well those are acceptable
even by insurance. it's the stuff that goes behind is the question
I just plan to leave them if I ever move out. All the three-way switches are done through binding, so will work without any smarthome system
i would pull them personally. but yeah if they are set up in a way where they work without a system powering them theen leaving them is probably fine.
may depend on person doing electrical inspection though (if thats part of the sale process)
it's just the hassle of removing lik 60+ switches when there may be something better when I do, or if I move somewhere that I don't own
I've never seen an inspector poke around behind switch plates, just maybe make sure that the circuits work
the fact that the switches have a blue glowing strip may spark curiosity, but I doubt it's enough to investigate further
in UK an "EICR" includes checking behind stuff (not necessarily everything but some)
the concern is the year or so the new buyer gets to make disputes
if anything happens then it can still come back on you
I've never seen that as part of any sales contract
not saying everyone does an EICR correctly mind... if you get one by someone that does it cheaply they will cut corners
they can contest if you didn't disclose something
"due diligence" is your responsibilty as a buyer
I'm in the process of selling my mom's house and it's definitely "as-is", as mentioned in the contract
as-is is a little diffrent
but I think there is still some fine print
but like you said, disclosing stuff is a necessity
in my case with stuff behidn the switches. i may forget something lol
here: EICR is recommended every 10 years (and required every 5 if your a landlord renting)
if you tried to sell a house that doesnt have an eicr cert or one thats super old then most people wouldnt touch it
unless your selling it as "probably needs rewire" which obviously impacts price
lol so every 15 years you get tagged with a "probably need rewire"? lol
I've also never sold a house where I did as much electrical stuff, either. I did remove the few X10 switches that I installed in a house about 20 years ago and they're now sitting in my garage collecting dust π
I need to sell a "big box of X10 crap" on eBay some day
nah, eicr will just highlight any issues that need fixing. unless you have messed with stuff a lot then its unlikely to be major issues
a "failed" eicr is still an eicr.
selling a house with electical is mostly fine but this circuit is fucked and switched off until you decide to fix it. is normal
wasn't there someone in here that had like an old tech museum? I remember them hooking up HA to like an old computer monitor or something. should find them and donate it to that
in rare cases a sparky can condem and raise the alarm if something is super dangerous but its gotta be pretty bad for that to happen
or they used HA to to run the boot ups of multiple old computers and do like an auto presnetation. that was it
Yeah, but I think it was more computer stuff. But I'd be happy to have somebody just take it of my hands
I could help, but I don't see the word trash anywhere in "big box of x10 crap"
You could definitely hide in there or build some raccoon nest out of it
There may already be a raccoon nest in there for all I know
They've probably built their own smart nest
do racoons have "nests"? is that the correct term? or are you just using it in a general way?
π€·
i think nest is accurate
How Raccoons Make Their Nest
As mentioned above, raccoons donβt make their own nests. Instead, they take over one that may have belonged to another animal or a particular place that they will be hidden.
they will build like a ring of stuff in an open area to sleep in
I guess they'll steal anything
and chew on almost anything
den feels more right. but maybe thats specific to raising young
Abandoned Burrows
Raccoons are the type of creatures that donβt want to work for anything.
Sounds about right
@last cedar did you just move into an abandoned house?
we don't really have any in the uk. some zoo's have them and some have escaped over the years and are about the place but they are not established
why they scour the ground infront of my barn that has the outside light looking for bugs that had kamikaze themselves to falling on the ground
4D chess my friend, 4D chess!
That is how Germany got its population, it only takes a couple of escaped horny raccoons and you have 20 million in a short time
cept in sweden
It would be sweet, but also devastate a lot of eco systems, so overall, not good at all
Exactly haha
we have quite a lot of foxes mind so i imagine that would help against establishment
would have to be a pretty decent sized fox for an adult racoon
article is old but fun - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-34618294
The raccoon was apparently also spotted taking The Tube on Saturday night.
In the picture captured near Oxford Street, the pet appears to be dressed in a jacket to protect it from the cold.
your not supposed to have them as pets but i guess people find/trap escaped ones and keep them or something
maybe just @last cedar on a city break to London π
Maybe this is a sign I need to move back to England π€£
don't want to move here? https://youtube.com/shorts/cVfCRP7-I2I?si=9h-kdZrTdFEJfGL-
lol, was that sponsored by the Swiss tourist board or something π
not that its not a nice place but thats a very cherry picked view i think
I have it pretty good in Sweden tbh
Long term I could absolutely see myself traveling and working remotely if that is still a thing in the future, companies seem to be clamping down on freedom.
I have some stuff going on for the future, and don't expect to have to work until I am 90 to be able to retire, anyway
@clear ferry you will be hosting protons new Norway infastructure from your basement right?
That's saying it all! It's true!
Proton moving servers, god damn
Yeah, to atxs basement no less!
Huh. Moving out of Switzerland into Germany o.0 weird choice
They do that because Switzerland is starting to have some questionable privacy proposals
And they get a foot into EU
I would like to discuss and add to that but it could get very political etc, so I will refrain!
So electron is entering the racooons to get a treat from the raccoon hive. Because the atom it was attached to before is thinking about collapsing the electrons superposition???
Honestly, No clue
It's Einsteins fault
Isn't that more like Kimball or who ever the other dude was?
where'd you get that from?
The screenshot
So my nephew wasn't able to print it, but a co-workers teen daughter prints things for spending cash, so I gave him $5 and she printed this for me. Probably $2 worth of filament, lol. It's to mount a 40mm fan to my HBA.
@clear ferry welcome to our world. https://youtu.be/sN4dGCjg-Y8?si=cFLgbVHapr3_Htkt
We need pics when you get it mounted!
Hi, I have a HA Discord question. Where do questions / suggestions about the documentation belong? In #1284966540617449515 ?
There are buttons at the bottom of each page for suggestions or to proper changes
But if your question is about the thing the docs are describing, go to the channel for that thing
Thanks - I attempted the latter. Appreciate the response.

I got bored and rooted a echo dot 2nd gen
and broke oobed lol so no oobe for me
so what running locally means that if my wifi/internet goes down, all my smart switches, thermostats, and lights will still work with voice assistant and manually?
I think so
Depends how your stuff in your house communicates. If they all use wifi then you will lose functionality without wifi.
Locally means in 99% of cases not using a cloud based integration or api, which means if your internet goes down, you will lose that.
However, lots of smart switches and such do have manual control, even if the wifi goes down.
this is a better answer
Also applies to zigbee, zwave, thread, matter etc
also i hope my light will work without wifi lol
oh okay, so ill just lose control of controlling it through voice assistants and such. but i can still control manually
Many lights you can program a power on behaviour, so you can turn the switch off, and back on and the light will illuminate and become a dumb light, at that point
Same with smart relays, and switches etc
In many cases yes, if done right
i cant afford screws to put my home assistant rpi 3b+ on the wall so i use pushpins lol
@fading pivot I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
I think losing your internet/ wifi is the least of your problems!
WHAT IS "reset_philips_hue"????
Make sure you have a backup of your config, sd cards are notoriously unreliable and you don't want to lose everything if it fails
i have the google drive thing set up.
and i usually make short lived projects anyways that die in about 1~2 weeks lol
I don't actually run any hue stuff, but someone in #1284966582375813201 or #1284966353798697001 may be able to help with that
im planning on starting a smart home, planning on buying a raspberry pi
this is just lying on a echo dot (gen 2)
i pressed 1 and it started scanning and a cool pattern showed on the echo dot
@fading pivot I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
If you can, I would try and grab something like an optiplex micro, such as a 7050 or such and run on that, far more reliable hardware
They can be found used for reasonable money in many cases
Raspberry pis are brilliant, but so many have had issues with sd cards etc, and it is not fun when you have your whole smarthome broken and then have to grab a new box
Even one of the proper HA boxes would be a big improvement
oh yeah im not going to use a sd card
im planning on buying an ssd
and connect it via usb
That changes things a bit
I think you still need a sd card to get it to boot from usb
ive read on how the sd card fails a lot
thats fine, after install ill just use the ssd
though that might of changed because my newest pi is a pi 3b+
there is a image that has the purpose of booting from usb.
for some reason lol
great i guess
i have no idea because i havent used a pi before
so im learning from scratch
If you don't have a sd card it will just do nothing (on the pi 3b+ at least, i think they changed it in like the pi 4/5)
?
what? hogan didn't play any of the hulks
I'm joking that OHF needs to backfill Hulk Hogan now that he's gone to the great wrestling arena in the sky
Hulk dies, suddenly there are four openings at OHF. Coincidence? I think not
oh i see
that's a hell of a conspiracy, brother
He needed money after his heyday in the 80s
Rule of threes... First Ozzy, now Hulk...who will be the third?

This is funnier. TouchΓ©!
anyone know what is a good price for an rpi 4?
Tuche
Fuckin gottem
This is officialβ’, that's why it's in a special #announcements channel. π
welp off to try one of these new fancy car washes for the Edge before I put it back into storage. sure i'll be disappointed
why use a mario kart blue shell when you have adb shell?
this is a awful joke
75 percentile, huh
Sprung for the inside cleaning. These kids look depressed
Wonder what the turn over rate for these people who do the I side cleaning is
charlies
it was alright. the wash part was a little more than it's worth but the interior clean for 25 was worth 25 lol
should take my truck there to really make those kids work for it lol
The last time I paid for a hand car wash I ended up grabbing their towels and such and finishing the job myself.
well the wash part was automated
Nobody else is going to give a crap about your car as much as you do
thats always the case
closest you can get is a private detailer
cause thier rep is what keeps them employed
what is a good price in usd for a rpi4?
where did you get an rpi4 for 3$?
I bought a Pi5 the other day from Radioshack. Did a double take when it was like $100
expected em to be like 40 or 50
for $100 i can go hit up tams or something and get a used thin workstation
but the RPi was really the best form factor for what I wanted (printserver for a bunch of label and receipt printers wife uses for her ecom business)
theres a kit on ebay for $70 for a rpi4 4gb ram with a case and everything
no kidding, cambridge is out of their mind charging $100 for these things
considering an ESP32 is absolutely eating their low-end
love me some seeed xiaos
you could get a more powerful mini PC for not much more
yeah, or just buy a HA Green if you want a small device that does it
so I have to ask, is there any callback when the position gets filled? I applied for the previous ones, would be nice to know if you're still looking.
Maybe you should figure that out first. Start with defining your problem. Then figure out how to solve for it.
Solving first then defining is what we call βpulling a Missyβ
I create problems then I solve them.
Kind of? I am not told directly when a position has been filled (unless it's for my team) so I have to watch for when they are either gone from our jobs page or announced as hired. I try to edit them on Reddit, but not really here since most people don't go back to the announcement channel.
The response I got before was βweβre saying no so hard that all future US hiring is suspendedβ π«£
-# this is 50% a joke
right, so if I hear nothing (as in, no e-mail beyond the initial autoreply) the position might not be filled yet?
I would like 3 examples of me doing this.
Tuya. Weather station. Discord.
Ah! I don't know how HR does that process, unfortunately.
wait wait wait how did I do Discord like this
Youβre doing great.
lmfao actually snorted
gotcha. cheers!
Missy is safe. Here's the third: https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/culture/story/chuck-mangione-feels-good-musician-bandleader-dead-84-124040942
I confess that I only know him from King of the Hill
jesus
man, i was listening to Children of Sanchez yesterday
would be nice if they do a tribute to him in the next olympics, since he wrote the theme for the 1980s winter olympics
can we all please agree to launch "it's nice to e-meet you" into space and leave it there forever?
I can't say that I've ever heard that from somebody, and humanity is probably better off
too cute by half, as they say
heh
nice to e-meet you!!
and that was the last we ever heard from tediore

Ooooh how are you pulling the dirt cycle

Iβm worried somethingβs still not quite right with my system
My humidity is staying high despite it running quite a bit
Thereβs a lot of condensation draining out via the drip pan, but we recently had our expansion valve replaced because the old has went bad
history stats with the type set to ratio
And it seems thereβs a bit less condensation than before
Would you mind sharing that part of your yaml? Im still fairly new some of the yaml for HA
central ac units will spit out more condensation if the temps drastically change too much over a 24 hour period
I feel like I probably have more an insulation and weather sealing problem than an AC problem
It thereβs only so much you can do in a mobile home
Iβm around 67% humidity at the air return and 73% at the extremities of the place
yea 67 is too high
hello
wdyt of the blog
wtf, you MIB or something?
super old photo that i thought was funny lol
Thank you so much!
understandable
You're doing a lot of typing
I was like, oh I will wait for his message and then get tea
There's a lot of shit to talk
but I think I am just going to get tea first

I mean, the looks also is no 5
like yes, functionality over looks
but if possible, I just want my grandma to come in and don't notice the things I built
last week I just discovered the thing like
I am good in placing things
but I need to be better into combining them
making it a whole instead of individual parts
my smart home should manage energy. We could do way more than just a dashboard
I think my desire to automate things into a smart house came from the movie bearing the same name
Which is kinda funny
Considering a big message in the movie was do not do this
I wanna house just like me

not sure if i'm right here, I just have a quick question to grasp the scale of the problem.
do light's by default do not have a restore state?
I'm setting up knx, and there the light's do not have the include. and I had a quick search and there are less hit's that I would expect...
That's a question for #1284966582375813201
thanks @static schooner is that a forum now? I don't see the use of discord as proprietary forum, I will use the official forum or github.
ok
thank you very much for being around, and responding. I think i recognize your name form past visits.
@warm helm that's why I say thanks π I assume by default that it is not a paid position, so that is the least that i could do.
@forest edge π
huh. homeassistant has a LOT of queries every hour. never seen that before
like how she concerningly said, "I don't think that will get that bad" lol
your paradise is crumbling man. time to move
Forget that. Love the honorable mention of your state. π€£ I am dying here!
thats ok, we both know who gets the last laugh
that system is stupid
leviton
yes no local api. you are better off clamping each line
The worst? Iunno, ask Missy
How much does ye olde off-brand zigbee relay cost anyway?
Well in that case if you need multiple, you could just look at these: https://us.shelly.com/products/shelly-pro-3
$61.59 for 3 channels (that's only $20.53 each!), and it has wired Ethernet if signal is a problem
Donβt be silly, youβre supposed to spend a bunch of time and money tracking everything so that you can βget around toβ optimizing consumption and save less than you spent
@tidal bronze well it looks like you actually got at least "someone" wanting to stay in California lmao
A ring camera from a Southern California home captured an alien-like figure walking across a yard. NBC News' Camila Bernal spoke to some experts on whether they feel the strange figure might've been out of this world.Β

i have created a discord server for Australian smart home where can i put it?
discord invites might be blocked
Almost!
Wow do I really need to create a YAML file just to turn on a device at a certain time? FFS
There are only like four actions. Three of them have to do with "auto-off enabled" which I'm sure is useful to someone, but how about just simply "turn on device"?
don't use device, use switch
Are you more of a switch or a device?
Aright I'll complain over there
wonder if my shelly post inspired anyone to fill out the feature request.
lol WEXIT.. look what you euro's done
You're solving global warming!
what?
it's is like if California, Washington, Oregon and Alberta looked at Sweden and said "hey nicely shaped country"
wqhat's the context?
Wexit is some term for western Canadian territories (and sometimes western US states) wanting to secede and form a country of their own. so yeah, one of those.
Does your bathroom have an AC vent?

I think something is absolutely railing my network

how do we make this room colder (Damnit, you were right @static schooner )
OTDOGUO This product integrates rain sensing and light intensity detection functions, provides real-time and intuitive data display for the smart , and realizes scene linkage control with other products in the smart , effectively improving the user's intelligent experience.

At least in America, until they figure out how to bill your insurance for heat, itβll probably stay cold
bro needs therapy, lots of it
um
I would call them "victims" given how they're portrayed, dude clearly hates women
right, but he should stop though
like
some of his video titles / thumbnails are traumatizingly hostile
that's tragic, and shouldn't be exploited by hate baiters
pretty poor defense
if you're in debt and someone offers to "help," and then continues to make hate bait out of you, who's to blame?
btw this isn't a new thing for YT or anything, it's a staple of television going back decades
Rickci Lake, Jerry Springer, Dr Oz, Dr Phil (see the pattern) all made pretty sweet dough exploiting vulnerable people for shits and laughs
it's disgusting
ok let's agree to disagree
I'm not sure what you're saying π
are you saying dr phil is a terrible human being?
because that's what I'm saying
ah
yeah that's probably fair
only one is exploiting the other tho
yeah I just don't agree with that particular take
he's the one doing bad things
they're being naive, or unresearched, or entitled or whatever doesn't detract from that
it just sounds like blaming the victim to my ears
maybe harsh but like
this is just bad and shouldn't exist
in fact, if they're that obviously not ready to deal with their shit, nobody should have them on
editorial standards βοΈ πΆ
I think it's central to this conversation that we recognize that people can have serious problems with personal finance, mental health, drug use or whatever, and that it's on the rest of us not to turn them into a hatebait freak show.
plenty of reporting about various reality shows seem to indicate that, yes
it's absolute trash in terms of entertainment
degrees in hell, of course
it's not all identical
that's the part of the argument I don't get
what does it matter? HE is doing the exploiting. HE should stop.
you're taking agency away from someone who is entirely responsible for the thing happening
I honestly doubt they agreed to get exploited
I don't pretend to know what's in their thoughts, mind you
but it's hard to conceive them agreeing without there being an amount of coercion
maybe he pays them? I dunno
btw apparently he has a habit of asking girls to go on OnlyFans to fix their debt
again, this I strongly disagree with. it's victim blaming-y.
anyway, I hear what you're saying, I just have an adverse reaction to platforming this type of trash. appreciate the conversation.
Found a little white puck with the Hue logo on it, thoughts? I'm not aware of any such Hue product
Probably a hue bridge. https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/p/hue-bridge/046677458478
no it's like 2 cm
no wires
Oh I think that might be a light switch of some sort? I vagely remember something like that
Is this like one of those text-based adventures?
Yeah, I was thinking that or the tap
Motion sensor?
It is very dark. You are likely to be eaten by a Tuya smart switch.
I think what I have is just the base plate
mystery solved
It's more like "who's that smart home accessory"
is there a place where I can find good recommendations for Zigbee blinds that are not from Ikea?
#1284966617670881350 -> Recommendations
There's a whole class of zigbee green power devices that can do that now, it requires efficient silicon
That's super super cool
unfortunately ZHA doesn't support them, but Z2M does
z2m ftw π
what's wrong with them
Or someone willing to press a really hard button
or an easy one like 20 times
"Welcome to my home, here's the light winch, you spin it to turn the kitchen lights on or off"
flexures exist to transform large easy movements into small powerful ones...
.. And other stuff too. π
or just ludicrously efficient chips; that too.
its always one of them that drops from the network

Finish you mayo is now the most disturbing sentence i heard all month. And i just wanted a mac kroket

best i can do is 2200 euros for an pre-war era 40m2 home

making an assumption based on your name and the fact that you eat an McKroket.. THE. WAR
O that war.
Its patat friet.
War won.
is het een patatuur of een frituur?
It is a frituur. And if you order friet you ask for something fryed. So it even could be a mac kroket.

i mean my partner is from Belgium so i am conflicted and confused about the terminology

What would it take to manufacture a long lasting repairable smartphone, but one that sources material and labour as ethically as possible?
The folks at Fairphone founded their company in 2013 based on that question and the Fairphone 6 is the most refined answer theyβve provided yet. So letβs dive in and see how Fairphone made a repairable ...
so cool. It's like a lego set
Didn't Google try that like 10 years ago?
been a couple of modular type phones over the years. none of them really took off
it's not a modular phone
dunno that video uses the term "modular" quite a lot
Oh, I misinterpreted the "lego set" comment. Looks like a design that went away many years ago for the major brands
exposed screws? simple, monolithic battery?
there are fully modular phones where you can replace one block with another. That's not what this is
its just a phone that uses no glue and so everything just clicks together or is held in by screws
Big Glue comes for us all eventually
more like Big Solder
kind of a niche product considering phone insurance and replacement is cheap and very good as is. For android anyways. This would be something else if it were an apple phone
oof just realized my pixel 3 battery is 7 years old lol
it's kind of inescapable.
they even state on the video that they only provide up to 8 years of OS support
8 years is great
my pixel is on 7..
the average is less than 2
the other modular phone I was thinking about was that Linux OS one
i think that flopped tho
this is the 6th model they make, the first one that has little compromises compared to a 'regular' phoone
yet it went 6/10
6/10?
I mean, you would be excused for thinking that 10 years ago, but weβre not really in a position to pretend like resources are infinite. Designing repairable stuff is not just ethical, itβs smart.
watch the phone industry get dragged, kicking and screaming, into the future with βsustainability awardsβ and βgreen certificatesβ
and then act like they came up with it
repairable isn't the issue. the processor, the screen and the cameras all just get outdated. parts are going to the wayside regardless.
if you are someone who drops your phone 20 times a day, than that is a good deal
otherwise it's pointless
outdated because of feature creep usually
thank GOD your phone has to do AI now, huh
what other need could we possibly have to upgrade every 18 months
why it's a niche product. many people answer YES to that question lol
even stefan said 2 years lol
potato potato
Hardware wise I could probably do 10 years with the phone I have now if it wasn't for shit battery durability
yeah
I haven't checked the stats but surely newer CPUs imply higher power consumption
anw, my point is just that designing sustainable products is hardly a waste of time
Not necessarily, transistors also become smaller
and mo(o)re of them, surely?
anw
sure
was a minor point at best
what
that escalated quickly π
cell phone prior to "smart" phones lasted for over 10 years.. we are heading the wrong direction.
Yeah weird response
careful
ok now you got me all nostalgic for the 1-week standby time on my Nokia 1610
not my fault logic eludes you guys lol
I think you misread that, I meant "aren't new chips more power hungry" was a minor point, I was really talking about sustainable design. So the fact that new chips might not be more power-hungry wasn't particularly relevant
Serious question. What education do you have?
my job is merely to "try". you actually learning anything is on you
Because it seems structural for you
like you are genuinely clueless about everything. It's kind of impressive
here we go
answer the question
