I know vaping is basically being a human test subject and people consume vast quantities more nicotine that way

The vaping shit is so insane

It's "better"than smoking if you only do enough to be equivalent to how much you used to smoke, problem is people vape way more, and the companies encourage it

hell the breakers and wire in the panel lasts longer than the panel lol

high remnant
#

my caffeine intake correlates with a decrease in actual output

#

if i am all amper up ill get dick done

dawn badge
#

historically in the uk. theres not alot of wiring that makes it past the 30 year mark before needing to be updated for one reason or another. although i think that will probably go up soon. and yes there are cases of old stuff lasting a lot longer but you would likely need to have it updated if you wanted to sell

forest edge
#

well that is kind of scary lol

high remnant
#

any german car

dawn badge
high remnant
#

mine didnt even get past 30 days

forest edge
#

that would be expensive

dawn badge
#

historically its been about that but i suspect it will be increasing now.
although if you want to add new stuff solar/battery/ev/heatpump stuff then you might have to replace much of it

forest edge
#

that would not fly here

dawn badge
#

one of those things. if you want x you need wiring to be y which requires the panel to have z
you might have to update stuff

forest edge
#

there are still homes down south with working knob and tube put in in the 40's lol

stuck mortar
#

I had the last of my house’s knob and tube ripped out when I moved in

dawn badge
#

for sure, uk still has some really old wiring in some places thats grandfathered in but means that they can have certain modern stuff and also might cause insurence issues etc...

forest edge
#

well i think you all should boycot plastic electrical panels none the less

#

plastic outlet boxes etc is fine but not panels.. especially exposed panels

#

wouldn't be as bad if they weren't exposed like the one in that vid

dawn badge
#

that one you linked is not really a residential thing.
pretty much all residential panels are metal now.

#

technically i think you can use "non-combustible plastic" but its easier to just use metal

forest edge
#

no I don't think they are. it might be in some counties but there was a documentary on those where one town did not have that requirement

#

conductive isn't the issue.. melting, burn through

#

metal dosen't burn through. unless you stuck a fork in where the breaker was

#

as in it help keep your house from burning down

#

yea about that

#

good luck actually getting back what you lose..

#

again

#

look at market costs for what etc

#

good luck getting back what you lose

#

it may resemble like the old one.. but it won't be lol

just saw a video of some type of limber they were using in framing where the dude crumpled the 2x4 as if it was cardboard lol

dawn badge
#

we gotta get the 2nd little pig to come explain stuff again?

forest edge
#

its legitimately scary how they build houses now

dawn badge
#

uk building regs are pretty strict. some stuff might be wrong/bad looking/etc... but its very rarely dangerous these days

forest edge
#

because we allow down to the city level to make their own regulations and laws there is no strictness to ensure that quality of materials nor quality of work is held to an acceptable standard

#

like treated lumber.. we can't even get access to some types of treated lumber where I live and there is an actual difference

dawn badge
thick dragon

Has a relay, but relay is never used. You can't generally find plugs that don't have a relay.

dawn badge

inductive loads through relays cause problems.

there are monitoring only setups but your right. they are not super common

thick dragon

Might be time I taught myself how to make an ESPHome CT clamp. Got plenty of ESP dev boards lying around.

dawn badge

athom make power monitoring only plugs running esphome if you want something out the box which is wifi

thick dragon

Yeah, that was gonna be my other option. I just liked the idea of reinforcing my Zigbee network with the Zigbee plugs.

dawn badge
thick dragon

Yeah nah. Need an electrician for that here. CT clamp or inline socket only. Thanks though.

dawn badge

i have gen3 versions of those wired inline on appliances but I am able to do it myself

dawn badge

ah, I don't know much about regs there. i am in the UK, thought we were the only ones to use "sparky" judging by the chaos i get when i use it around here πŸ˜›

#

the athom plug is probably a decent option. i think they are one of the few to make AU plug stuff too.

#

although its only a 10a rating so if you have a 10a appliance it might be pushing it

thick dragon
#

I actually talked with an Athom rep a while ago, they are technically capable of 15A, but only rated to 10A apparently.

robust flicker
thick dragon

However, I have already had the Athom plugs before with the relay and they all died within 2 years.

hollow panther
thick dragon
#

Thanks, but as I just said I'm a) in Australia (where Emporia is not available and you need an electrician to install anyway) and b) need a single device monitor rather than a centralised monitor. Easiest option is definitely relay-less Athom plugs, but doesn't look difficult to just use the CT sensor component of ESPHome either.

dawn badge
thick dragon
#

Oh really, I did not realise that. Well that kills that idea then. Guess my only option is Athom relay-less plug.

forest edge
#

relay less sounds like a waste of money

dawn badge
dawn badge
forest edge
#

cost + lack of the relay part + same limitations.. just sounded like a waste of money to me

#

I get the reasons for it

#

but dosen't make it sound any better

#

almost be more worthwhile to get something like what tedski linked above and just ct the individual breakers

#

cause ct clamps have the higher rating

dawn badge
thick dragon
forest edge
thick dragon
#

How?

dawn badge
#

if you can monitor the other stuff i guess...

forest edge
#

what exactly are you trying to monitor? i didn't catch that part

thick dragon
#

Washing machine. 10A inductive draw.

forest edge
#

so why go with anthom with a lower amperage rating? why not some other brand that goes up to like 16 or more? that way the relay wouldn't trip?

thick dragon
#

Because they don't exist? Again... AU.

forest edge
#

and if it's a washing machine, you can pop the cover and get access to the individual power lines for use with a ct clamp easy as pie

thick dragon
#

Yet again, no I can't. Not legally.

forest edge
thick dragon
#

Not without an electrician to install it.

forest edge
#

they make plugs

thick dragon
#

Nah, no plugs for AU from them that I've ever seen, just in-walls.

forest edge
#

cal never made au sound like it was so restrictive

#

also the "not legal" part how would they ever know if you did it yourself?

thick dragon
forest edge
#

well 10amp restriction is stupid for a relay or power monitoring device

#

I guess realistically your washing machine shouldn't even come close to that even if its rated for it but still

thick dragon
#

I agree. The Athom rep I talked to said that their stuff is technically capable of 16A, but they only get it rated to 10A.

thick dragon
forest edge
#

you put a kill a watt meter on it?

#

or something similiar

#

weird it would tap out the rating of your actual socket

thick dragon
#

Circuits here are generally rated to 20-30A because our voltage is pretty variable (230-250).

#

Which is why it's frustrating that smart sockets are generally 10A. But probably also why they are supposedly meant to handle up to 15A.

dawn badge
#

i imagine the peak consumption during heating stage is actually resistive load
as the heading element is resistive. but the motor that make it go spinny is the inductive load part which will be less

#

make friends with a sparky. its such a tiny job they might do it for beer πŸ™‚

forest edge
#

well if the anthom sockets can supposedly handle up to 15amp why go for the relay less one??

thick dragon
#

If it was the relay that died, one less component that could cause an issue.

forest edge
#

i wonder if thats the brand

dawn badge
thick dragon
#

I'll reach out to them and ask.

forest edge
#

at this point I would just get your electrician cert on the side and just put the good stuff in lol

thick dragon
#

Heh, has been a dream for years.

dawn badge
#

i considered getting some quals in uk so i can do more stuff. but its such a pain. you basically get stuck super early unless your actually working as a sparky...

#

I have seen stuff on people trying to do it. they end up having to start a company and "do work" for friends/family.

I get that classroom is not the reality of real situations but its really painful if your just looking to do stuff for yourself safely and not work in the industry

thick dragon
#

forest edge

static schooner
#

I haven't actually put anything behind switches or outlets, just swapped them out for smart versions

forest edge
#

oh

#

well those are acceptable

#

even by insurance. it's the stuff that goes behind is the question

static schooner

I just plan to leave them if I ever move out. All the three-way switches are done through binding, so will work without any smarthome system

it's just the hassle of removing lik 60+ switches when there may be something better when I do, or if I move somewhere that I don't own

#

I've never seen an inspector poke around behind switch plates, just maybe make sure that the circuits work

#

the fact that the switches have a blue glowing strip may spark curiosity, but I doubt it's enough to investigate further

dawn badge
#

in UK an "EICR" includes checking behind stuff (not necessarily everything but some)

forest edge
#

the concern is the year or so the new buyer gets to make disputes

#

if anything happens then it can still come back on you

static schooner
#

I've never seen that as part of any sales contract

dawn badge
#

not saying everyone does an EICR correctly mind... if you get one by someone that does it cheaply they will cut corners

forest edge
#

its there

#

every state has it

static schooner
#

they can contest if you didn't disclose something

#

"due diligence" is your responsibilty as a buyer

#

I'm in the process of selling my mom's house and it's definitely "as-is", as mentioned in the contract

forest edge
#

as-is is a little diffrent

#

but I think there is still some fine print

#

but like you said, disclosing stuff is a necessity

#

in my case with stuff behidn the switches. i may forget something lol

dawn badge
#

here: EICR is recommended every 10 years (and required every 5 if your a landlord renting)
if you tried to sell a house that doesnt have an eicr cert or one thats super old then most people wouldnt touch it
unless your selling it as "probably needs rewire" which obviously impacts price

forest edge
#

lol so every 15 years you get tagged with a "probably need rewire"? lol

static schooner
#

I've also never sold a house where I did as much electrical stuff, either. I did remove the few X10 switches that I installed in a house about 20 years ago and they're now sitting in my garage collecting dust πŸ™‚

#

I need to sell a "big box of X10 crap" on eBay some day

dawn badge
#

a "failed" eicr is still an eicr.
selling a house with electical is mostly fine but this circuit is fucked and switched off until you decide to fix it. is normal

forest edge
dawn badge
#

in rare cases a sparky can condem and raise the alarm if something is super dangerous but its gotta be pretty bad for that to happen

How Raccoons Make Their Nest
As mentioned above, raccoons don’t make their own nests. Instead, they take over one that may have belonged to another animal or a particular place that they will be hidden.

forest edge
#

they will build like a ring of stuff in an open area to sleep in

static schooner
#

I guess they'll steal anything

Hardware wise I could probably do 10 years with the phone I have now if it wasn't for shit battery durability

arctic quarry
#

yeah

#

I haven't checked the stats but surely newer CPUs imply higher power consumption

#

anw, my point is just that designing sustainable products is hardly a waste of time

primal laurel
#

Not necessarily, transistors also become smaller

arctic quarry
#

and mo(o)re of them, surely?

#

anw

#

sure

#

was a minor point at best

I don't think that's what teetow was saying

forest edge
#

not my fault logic eludes you guys lol

arctic quarry
#

I think you misread that, I meant "aren't new chips more power hungry" was a minor point, I was really talking about sustainable design. So the fact that new chips might not be more power-hungry wasn't particularly relevant

my job is merely to "try". you actually learning anything is on you

primal laurel

Because it seems structural for you

again, that's not even close to what "a minor point at best" was referring to

#

it was referring to MY point about power consumption in the context of sustainable design

I dont think teetow says you're wrong
