#

I also get to... plan on hacking this thing

#

because I am not going to use their trash app shit for more than the bare minimum time required..

#

& it seems like a few people have cracked away at similar things but not this exact same one

primal laurel
#

then you can do some smart controls

unborn merlin
#

yup.

#

I mean I could bodge it on via infrared too but

#

.... nah that doesn't involve doing a bit of work to reverse their protocol and my oscilloscope.. 😛

primal laurel
#

infrared sucks because you run into desync

unborn merlin
#

yep.

#

whereas if I co-opt that esp on there..

dawn badge
unborn merlin
#

or just replace it with my own esp since that board is 5v, rx, tx, gnd outputs

primal laurel
#

I put an esp in mine, mitsubishi

unborn merlin
#

Aciq brand.

primal laurel
#

but some guy sold DIY modules specifically for my model

unborn merlin
#

so.. generic-ish chinese.

#

I have some of those I'm assembling for someones house actually.

#

😛

#

but this doesnt use a onewire with low voltage between the outdoor and indoor units

#

well it may

#

but the onewire is.. right next to the AC power for the indoor unit so

#

unsure how exactly it works I doubt its the same linbus protocol

#

(which is what the mitsubishi ones use, seemingly)

#

unless the outdoor unit is sending.. rectified voltage to the indoor unit.. maaaybe.. hm

dawn badge
#

gotta be careful with some of these esp implementations sometimes.
"isolation? why bother just reference stuff to neutral..."

unborn merlin
#

I'm aware..

#

I can see a transformer on the indoor control board though so..

dawn badge
#

i get it in smart plugs where you have limited space, and a price point to hit. but when people do it on bigger stuff its just fuckery

unborn merlin
#

I'm assuming currently (will test later) that the 5v rail for the control circuit is isolated.

#

yeah, and shellys warn you about it on their debug/flash interface 😛

unborn merlin
#

Tho its not terribly expensive to get a cheap low-power/low-speed USB isolator

#

yeah basically all of them say it

#

unsurprisingly.. because fitting an isolating transformer in those tiny bastards would probably be.. rather difficult

dawn badge
#

yeah, plus heat and interference etc...

last cedar
unborn merlin
#

I mean... they already sell for like

#

reasonable prices..

#

and dont cloud scumbag you

#

and etc..

#

plus the option of UL certified ones too.. again not something that is cheap 😄

primal laurel
#

these units will already have an onboard header for their own 'smart' module. That's what I use but with a DIY module instead

To be faaiuuh, recognizing specific people can be useful

your camera can be trained to recognize new faces?

primal laurel

unborn merlin

#

im not bothered by that

desert cave
primal laurel
#

so you let frigate do it for you? how did you train frigate?

#

the strength is that you dont have to retrain

unborn merlin
#

... frigate does let you 'retrain' somewhat

#

off their paid model service stuff

primal laurel
#

so you can't actually recognize new things

unborn merlin
#

i mean you can..

primal laurel
#

well, that would require training

unborn merlin
#

The base model in Frigate+ has now been updated to 2025.2. All model requests going forward will use this version. If you have a pending model request, it has automatically been updated to use 2025.2.

In this release, sampling was focused on incorporating new labels (kangaroo, skunk, school bus, canada post, and royal mail) and adding additional examples for underrepresented labels. These new labels still have relatively few examples, and performance will improve as more examples are incorporated.

I am also working to incorporate YOLOv9 as an available model type since it is supported by most hardware in the upcoming Frigate 0.16 release currently in beta. Unless I run into significant barriers, I plan to release it sometime before the next base model in the fall.

#

it adds new stuff over time.. 😛

primal laurel

no but it does mean you can kill them off in an episode of star trek. /s

dawn marlin
#

I have a couple runs for APs but they’re not in great spots

#

I’m tempted to just run the cable under and out and from the porch post to the doorbell if I got a g4

#

At least that way if they cut the cable I see them coming

#

How does the person detection and notification compare to something like ring?

honest moat
#

Most criminals are just going to smash and grab

#

My dad used to grumble about my smart lock being insecure until I pointed out the giant window next to it

honest moat
#

If you put it behind an ai key or similar it can do face recog

dawn marlin
#

One thing about living in a trailer that looks sorta ran down in the outside but is actually pretty nice in the inside as the previous owner was an older lady who took super great care of it, is that most people don’t think there’s much to steal in it

honest moat
#

But ring kind of owns the battery market

dawn marlin
#

When you say face detection do you mean faces in general or distinguishing one person from another?

honest moat
#

The latter

dawn marlin
#

Nice

#

I wouldn’t need that far

#

My ring just does basic person detection

honest moat
#

You can get the same with just frigate too

#

But I kind of try to let each "ecosystem" in my automation setup do the most it can

dawn marlin
#

I’m honestly a bit paranoid. I have the ring cam, I get alerts when the door gets unlocked, alerts when it opens, alerts when it closes. The close an open alarms are routed through the 4 Alexa’s across the place so it’s announced lol

honest moat
#

So lutron for lighting, open sprinkler for irrigation, unifi for network and cameras, etc

honest moat
#

Home assistant just acts as glue that enables extra stuff on top

dawn marlin
#

I have a g4 camera I need to either run the cable myself or get someone to run it for

honest moat
#

If it goes down it's not the end of the world

dawn marlin
#

I haven’t worked with unifis lightning protection before so I’m not sure how I would ground it

honest moat
#

Brb kids just smacked each other

honest moat
#

But that's if

dawn marlin
#

But you don’t have the surge protector itself grounded?

#

I’m not sure why I’m so worried about it

#

As the entire outside shell of this place is metal

#

So any wayward charge from lightning should just dissipate through it to ground

honest moat
#

Oh yeah, it's just got a screw and I ran a wire from it to a water pipe

#

But I've got lightning arrestors on the roof

#

So it's more a cya

robust flicker

@dawn marlin So I'm not the only one doing automation in a mobile home? Nice.

dawn marlin
#

Yeah

dawn marlin
honest moat
dawn marlin
#

I really should ground my server rack

#

I can’t just hook to water pipe unfortunately

robust flicker
#

It really is. But our place is more than just MH at this point, there's also a detached garage, an entire roof and front porch plus an additional room, added all around the place as well. You can't really even tell unless you look at the sides where the edge of the trailer is still visible

dawn marlin
#

Mines all pvc

honest moat
#

Hook to the center screw on an electrical outlet

#

Those are grounded

dawn marlin
#

Lmao my mobile home has these weird plastic covers that clip on

#

I’ll have to figure something out though

#

Maybe run a dedicated ground wire through the floor where the previous owner had coax ran

robust flicker
#

Not necessarily. On a MH, the power comes in and there's usually a meter on a pole next to the trailer, and there's a ground rod off the pole. But unless the installer ALSO attached ground straps from the metal frame of MH to that ground (called bonding to that ground) the. The trailer will likely have a separate ground from the power.. which is actually a bad idea. More than one ground to choose from makes power surges completely unpredictable and hard to mitigate.

dawn marlin
#

Hmm true

#

Plus my ups complicate things

#

I have a dual conversion

#

So utility power never touches my rack

#

But the ground should just be passed through

robust flicker
#

@dawn marlin Run a 2ga insulated cable from your trailer ground to the ground line on the pole with your meter. That's the best way

dawn marlin
robust flicker
#

I have a cousin in law who works for the local power company. He helped me ensure my place is as well protected as it can be., and that's what we did, except in my case, we bonded the ground from the garage and the trailer together, since my meter goes to the garage.

primal laurel

Which you would have to transport to the moon

#

Gonna cost you trillions

forest edge
#

they wouldn't have gotten this far in considering it if they didn't already crunch the numbers

primal laurel
#

Lol you'd be surprised

#

Companies often push through either due to sunk cost fallacy or hoping for some breakthrough that will make it all worth it. Like fusion reactors and quantum computers. Billions invested, no results

forest edge
#

it's kind of an inevitable direction

#

I don't know if the video I posted above explained why they were seriously looking toward the moon but another I saw did in all the reality of building all these data centers on earth in cold climate areas and in the ocean etc has it's own negative impacts

#

I just got done watching that Patheon series a few days ago. think it be awesome to go the space ring route but that would be way harder lol

glacial knot

yea, with the moon idea, nobody knows the expected cost.So they can just collect funding without end 😂

well I don't think they said it was going to be anytime soon

#

we are kind of gearing up for it though

all the robotics, the cost of sending rockets into space getting cheaper and more reliable

this is one of those goals that won't happen in my lifetime but may in someone as young as stefans

glacial knot

still lacks a good reason to do so
probably at least until we have enough in space that the location becomes a benefit instead of deficit

forest edge

should still be something to cross your fingers over. like I said, once that foothold is established it's going to accelerate all kinds of new tech and discoveries in many fields

The Parker Solar Probe (PSP; previously Solar Probe, Solar Probe Plus or Solar Probe+) is a NASA space probe launched in 2018 to make observations of the Sun's outer corona.
It used repeated gravity assists from Venus to develop an eccentric orbit, approaching within 9.86 solar radii (6.9 million km or 4.3 million miles) from the center of the S...

I believe if a human were in the spin launch, they would become a nice red slurry afterwards

like I already said, there were other reasons for considering the moon

Get people used to those dial up speeds again

So, I think I finally have decent drive temps in my server thanks to the new case:

You'd need a lot of DSN sites to make the bandwidth viable

Laser ping to moon and back is 2600ms

Lol..... Well all I know of is DTE ka band and x band transmitters

So about 10x slower than dialup latency

Maybe it doesn't work on orbit and needs a ground station?

I think people forget just how far away our moon is.

#

well if you think about it. how long did we go from wireless G to what we have now

#

I would imagine a realistic adventure to actually building on the moon would take much longer than that

peak slate
#

Lol no mention of it going aboard gateway, lines up with the comm notes I saw

forest edge
#

you guys are thinking too soon

#

gotta open your minds. who knows what will be available by the time tesla perfect thier robots to actually construct the thing

peak slate
#

Though that may also be the joke

forest edge
#

it was a joke. but you really can't say never

peak slate
#

So the robots come after the self driving cars, those will be in the next 50 or so years, so the robots should only take 100 years!

#

We'll have quantum communication

forest edge
#

workers there did say that was automous so not human driven this time

#

but really. even if it was human driven. by the time the go to build on the moon who's to say they won't have the network ability to communicate enough to control those things from earth

#

that was a good top post

todays silly idea... switch kitchen tts announcements to parliamentary speeches:

They linked to drinking those out of moderation to causing diabetes. Like more so than soda etc

Didn't even know they made sugar free ones

Energy drinks and vaping turn out to be worse than smoking and soda.. love the direction we are heading
