Good thing I wrote how to search in here. BlobGhostFingerGuns

The only problem I can't solve is people's reading comprehension.

As long as they can open our door with a key if we are not here (VERY RARE) then they are happy. Amazon, on the other hand screwed up and on an overnight order pulled it from the wrong DC which caused it to be delayed by one day. This really suprises me as they seem to have mastered the whole logistics thing you'd think.

Panic locks are uncommon in residential places
For security reasons ^^

forest edge
unborn merlin
#

its called a panic lock.. if you don't need a key inside?

glacial knot
#

More or less
Generally if it necessarily unlocks with the handle from one side

#

Though since we don't tend to have handles on the outside and just let the door fall into locking, most doors act the same way unless explicitly locked

#

Outside doors tend to be like this
And always require a key to go inside
And we don't tend to lock the doors when home

ocean oar
#

I was thinking about a front door in very much that style

#

Our house is somewhat backward on the section (positioned for better sunlight), so the entry door is really what the floorplan intended to be the back door

As such, is an all clear glass affair, not really front door material

edge computing is the future

It is

#

doesn't have to be public cloud

forest edge

great fun

clear ferry
forest edge
#

sure hope qf dosen't drop some truth bomb like that

clear ferry
primal laurel
clear ferry
#

gotta distinguish between public cloud and private cloud

#

edge computing has its limitations, which is why data gets sent back also

#

with proper redundancy downtime isn't really an issue with live stream to primary site, we even do it for oil platforms with fallback on satellite

#

but even the fiber links to oil platforms is seldom down

#

for anything land based dual pathed is very easy to accomplish, within country, and currently I'm handling a cross atlantic dual path too, which hasn't been down for 6 years

#

biggest problems within OT \ industrial networking design principals is usually the stubborness of the engineers, who usually work off doctrine from the 90s at best

that and EthernetIP

clear ferry

they still do telnet

fathom sparrow

in their defense, it just works

#

and it's the easiest to work with when you don't know networking

clear ferry
#

it does, if they could just secure their networks at all, it wouldn't be that bad

fathom sparrow
#

which is pretty much most engineers

clear ferry
#

but when they keep their networking closets unlocked

#

and all ports in the same vlan

#

yeah, funtimes

#

profinet at least tries to do something, but usually it is configured so flakey that is just breaks

#

and then the engineers go

#

and just rollback to telnet

we only deal with ABB

and it is going to make my day bad

#

or worse

fathom sparrow
#

I've never seen the network side of it. I just connect to it anyway that I can with any API that I choose

#

I can say, their clock updating system is beyond fucking stupid

#

shit's always out of sync and I wish they'd just use NTP

#

No idea if that's our networking guys who set that up or what

clear ferry
#

They don't use NTP ?

#

all stuff I do is usually dual GPS systems as clock servers, that local AD servers sync to, that everything else syncs to

fathom sparrow
#

I don't know if they use NTP, I do know they need to sync shit regularly because it's always wildly off and my system requires things to occur within a specific manufacturing timeframe from when the part was made.

clear ferry
#

sounds like an implementation issue

#

if there is at least one local gps clock that either has an antenna or is taken outside once a year it should be all fine

#

if setup correctly

fathom sparrow

You're assuming we have a gps clock 🀣

clear ferry

# fathom sparrow I've never seen EEs do any assembly line crap here

it depends where you study what you can specialize in, EE is very broad. For example in 'college' you can specialize in automation, but you won't find that in university (at least not here). But in university you can specialize in electronic systems (so yeah board design etc.) but also signal processing, embedded systems, photonic integration, optics, electromagnetics, power electronics, electrical energy systems, control systems, ...

fathom sparrow
#

in the states, optics, control systems, electromagnetics are all ME

#

and embedded systems and signal processing are CE

solar zealot
#

CE my beloved fellas

primal laurel
#

I started with signal processing but now im doing more control. But I ended up doing a lot of convex optimization which is not really a specialization but you can follow courses for it

primal laurel
#

what is ME about optics? It's physics if anything

fathom sparrow
#

well magnetism in general

#

Physics 2

#

optics -> Physics 3

#

all required (at least) for ME

#

with no extra electives to broaden in both EE or ME

#

Physics 1 was all the easy stuff like F=MA

#

I hated Physics 2

primal laurel
#

oh like that

#

EM is a 2 year specialization within EE here

#

you will do only EM. Like design RF chips, antennas, MRI coils that kind of thing

clear ferry

#

Hey all. Not sure where to start so I'm starting here. My friend wants me to setup a home camera system for him that is self-hosted and does not involve any cloud uploads. I've learned the Frigate is a great option and their documentation says that Dahua is a great camera option. Just here to learn from the experience of those here. My friend mainly wants a camera system but I am curious about the use cases for the advanced features of frigate. And curious about how difficult it is to configure. I am fairly familliar with linux, docker containers, LXC containers, bash, networking, etc.

forest edge
#

while frigate is nice. it's not really necessary for just a cctv system

#

brand ai object detection has gotten a lot better over the past few years

autumn wedge
forest edge
#

well the point is to get accurate detections not false positives like shadows and leafs etc

forest edge
#

in the past brand built in detection kind of sucked so something like Frigate was an absolute great thing but these days brand built in detections have improved considerably

#

plus frigate was local and could be used with HA for automation triggers etc

#

but if all you are really concerned about is just a local cctv system then you can skip the whole frigate thing. brands like reolink with nvr or others with nvr are local

autumn wedge
#

Oh I c. So reolink systems have integrated software that is local and plug and play? Does it come with the server too is that separate?

forest edge
#

yes the NVR is the "server" (i think is what you are referring too) that stores all the footage etc

dusty mica
#

reolink cams have great ai now, no need for frigate, you dont need server but can record directly to /media or smb in haos

autumn wedge
#

Oh so all I would need is network storage and the camera's software will write to that? My friend wants 6 cameras. He will be able to see all cameras in a single interface?

autumn wedge
dusty mica
#

yes, possible if enough ram and cpu

autumn wedge
#

Last questions. Are there any advantages at all to using frigate?

forest edge
#

if you are using HA, yes

#

if not.. not really

dusty mica
#

i dont use frigate, reolink does it all

forest edge
#

can't set up zones with reolink and others. can't fine tune a lot of stuff

#

not to mention frigate can now control ptz cameras

dusty mica
#

more options indeed, but also more setup. If extra options needed that reolink does not have, go for frigate

primal laurel

but the most annoying thing was the constant synchronization issues. I switch devices all the time, and plex does not keep good track of which client has what history. That synchronisation happens in their backend. For jellyfin the synchronization happens on the docker container so all my sync issues are now gone

grizzled gull
#

I could see how that woudl be super annoying

forest edge

the only thing I wish they would improve in plex is the playlists. be nice to be able to create a playlist from both movies and tv shows and to start and resume where you had left off. treat the playlist as if it was one huge single media of sorts

ocean oar
#

My #1 (tbh, basically only) gripe with Plex at the moment is I want to be able to manually add something into the "continue watching" row.
Too annoying to browse the library on the TV, and especially when starting a re-watch of something where you also need to mark it unwatched first; just want to do that on my phone then force S01E01 into the list so it's one click on the TV remote to start playing.

Like a chatbot that can pull answers from the internet, similar to ChatGPT and the like, but hosted on your own servers and network so as not to send all of your data to a third party? Something that can be saved in memory to remember context over long conversations, and answer questions while remembering the current config of stuff? I'm looking to have some sort of CoPilot situation where it can answer questions while I work on code or other projects.

Ollama is a good self hosted AI if you have the hardware to power it. I'm running a 14 yr old rig so mine won't.
Home Assistant is pretty awesome! https://home-assistant.io I have mine setup through Proxmox via helper-scripts.com but the thing I can tell you about Home Assitant is it will get you started easily and you can control more things than you can think of. I have my lights in the living room and bedroom for example, automated to turn on/off and dim and set the colors as desired all from the Home Assistant Dashboard. You can connect smart locks to it and have it alert you if someone unlocks the door for example, or even remotely lock and unlock it. I have a dehumidier connected to it and can monitor my humidity and also have a room sensor which detects motion and temp and a few more things. I will warn you though, once you get into it, it becomes slightly addicting as you find yourself wanting "more!" and finding ways to automate more of your home.

Home Assistant

Open source home automation that puts local control and privacy first. Powered by a worldwide community of tinkerers and DIY enthusiasts. Perfect to run on a Raspberry Pi or a local server.

If you are on Reddit r/homeassistant is a good place to get advice and more info from as well.

just wait till it gets removed next month

have a lot of cats walking around, not triggering the cam once πŸ˜‰ not even raccoons

only persons

and bought reolink on advice from home assistant on this server

thats why you need frigate?

I'm limited to it's builtin AI unless I upload all video to a server and run detections there.

#

and then create a webrtc stream of incoming etc etc

forest edge
#

wut

#

you just pipe the camera rtsp stream into frigate. thats it

#

but I wouldn't bother with frigate unless you actually needed some feature it has. it's just added expense in hardware

forest edge
#

oh

#

yea can't use frigate with that

#

well not easily

lethal hamlet
#

Indeed

#

only "quick" solution is to ftp recordings then setup frigate or anything else and have it forward to hass

forest edge
#

well your camera you posted above is in a shit location

lethal hamlet
#

POE cams will come

#

Just wanted nice 4g battery powered by solar cams

forest edge
#

should have splurged for one of thier 24/7 record capable ones

#

that way object detection wouldn't require a 30ft limited object to even start detection

lethal hamlet
#

Yes but tbh the total cost now is almost the same as some ubi cams plus access point plus 4g router

lethal hamlet
forest edge
#

those are not battery

lethal hamlet
#

Also tried to adjust the size in the go pt ultra and no change, while the goplus is at a worse place but detects fine

forest edge
#

your problem is the camera is too far away from the area you want to detect

lethal hamlet
#

just has an issue where connection fails and need to restart the cam manual

forest edge
#

they recommend 10-14ft up off the ground and within 30ft

#

that you posted above is not within those specs at all

lethal hamlet
#

iow need frigate to overcome that limit then :p

forest edge
#

traditional battery cameras use a pir sensor to even start the recording/detection process and pir has a limited range of 30ft so the camera won't detect nothing till that is triggered

#

frigate can't

lethal hamlet
#

Motion gets recorded

#

But not people etc

forest edge
#

smaller heat signature

#

than a car

#

why the camera should be within 30ft of whatever you are wanting to cpature

lethal hamlet
#

nothing works except motion

forest edge
#

no shit

lethal hamlet
#

and motion doesn't include persons cars etc

forest edge
#

your camera is way further away lol

#

motion is likely insects

#

like i already said. the camera is in a shit location
