last cedar
#

Energy recovery?

round crystal
#

When we buy a house, I'm installing a ERV

#

energy recovery ventilator

last cedar
#

Yes, this is what we put in

round crystal
#

when you heat your home in the coldest days of the year, or circulate fresh air, you don't have to loose the heat

#

nice

#

heat pump or gas for heating?

#

You're in europe so I assume heat pump (the only logical answer in 2025)

last cedar
#

Oh, I also insulated the loft with 30cm more insulation

round crystal
#

damn

last cedar
#

At the moment it has its own inbuilt electric heater

round crystal
#

you're never gonna have to run the AC

round crystal
#

I love electric heaters. They're more expensive to run but when you have 100% efficiency, who cares.

last cedar
#

But I am going to add an air water heat pump, currently we use pellets to heat water, and probably use 2nd zone for the ventillation for heating and cooling

round crystal
#

air water heat pump? and pellets?

glacial knot
#

who cares about efficiency if it's not reflected in โ‚ฌโ‚ฌ

round crystal
#

you mean heat pump water heater?

round crystal
last cedar
#

Yes, air sourced heatpump

round crystal
#

you're getting every BTU you apy for ๐Ÿ™‚

last cedar
#

Not a geo thermal one

round crystal
#

Nice

#

So you have a water heater that sucks heat from the air?

glacial knot
#

well yea, and each BTU is expensive as fuck probsLUL

round crystal
#

I learned about that thanks to youtube

#

The whole concept is insane

#

It's summer, so lets trap the heat in a tank to warm the water for later.

#

Cools your home, dries the air, and saves you energy

#

what's not to love?!

#

God I wish we had these things in Canada as the norm vs everything being gas / electric

#

Our dryers are electric, our heating is mostly gas unless you're in a condo then you get it through a water loop unless you're like us with PTAC systems

glacial knot
#

I'll have gas rooD

#

retrofitting heat pumps is a PITA

round crystal
#

mini split heat pumps exist

#

you can get ones that replace your gas furnace and just need two pipes through the wall to a air source heat pump

#

Here in Canada we have a massive push back on heat pumps because in areas that can hit -40 we have rebates to replace oil heating

last cedar
#

-40C?

round crystal
#

The issue? People are like "my oil heater is rated to do 50k BTU, this heatpump is $9k and I get $5k off but it's only rated for 20k BTU, it should be fine!"

last cedar
#

Damn, it is actually the same in F and C lol

round crystal
last cedar
#

I should have remembered

round crystal
#

lol

#

we're metric

#

Assume anything I say is metric unless I say inches or some other imperial thing

last cedar
#

Lowest I have seen for an air source heatpump is rated to work in -28C

round crystal
#

we have ultra cold weather ones

#

The issue is people think "well let me use the $5k rebate on a $9k heatpump not rated for a house of my size in this weather" and then wonder why they suck

last cedar
#

Generally here, it is recommended to go geothermal if you live futher up north

round crystal
#

Like spend the extra money, it pays for itself

round crystal
#

so it's cheaper to just burn electricity becuase our CANDU reactor goes BRR

round crystal
#

It's an investment in yourself.

#

oh no you pay $7k instead of $4k vs the $2k per year on heating oil

#

The issue tho is here in Ontario, if you live in the GTA Especially, electricity is absurdly cheap

#

like if you're a business / person who does stuff mostly at night, you can go for a plan where overnight you pay 0,02c CAD per kwh

#

During our peak times on the normal plan, it's like 0,14c CAD per kwh

#

Off peak is like 0,06c CAD per kwh

#

german power prices

#

I've seen them

#

No wonder you guys use enough insulation to shield your homes from a gamma ray burst

glacial knot
#

yea, AC is super uncommon here

round crystal
# glacial knot do you have a link to one? I mostly see mini-split AC when I search for the term...
glacial knot
#

I got one of those "portable AC units" with a hose out the window though

round crystal
glacial knot
round crystal
#

You guys have such insanely insulated homes I can't imagine the temperature fluctuating much

glacial knot
#

depends

round crystal
#

Like what you homes goes to 26c when it's +45c out?

glacial knot
#

though my attic here isn't insulated well and got a large south side. So it goes up to 40ยฐ in summer rooD

round crystal
#

I envy german homes. The insulation is insane

#

40c inside?!

glacial knot
#

yea

round crystal
#

I'm literally melting.

#

just reading that made me sweat

glacial knot
#

That's why I got the AC up there. I use it to work from home

#

but not for long anymore!

round crystal
#

You need to insulate.

#

Also one thing we're doing right in Canada (GTA) is we're doing green roofs on many new builds.

glacial knot
#

nah. I'm not gonna invest into a rental place rooKek

round crystal
#

and white roofs on condos

#

oh you're renting

glacial knot
#

green roofs rooComfy

round crystal
#

Ok, is it true when you rent, you're expected to bring your own cabinets in germany?

#

Like you're kinda expected to stay long term

glacial knot
#

the only furniture here that's not mine is the kitchen

round crystal
#

Like the cabinets are theirs?

glacial knot
#

oh and parts of the bathroom yagaGa

round crystal
#

The video I saw said they had to build out their own kitchen cabinets. The only thing provided was a sink

#

Like you bring your own appliances too (washer / dryer)

glacial knot
#

Kitchen is a big "it depends" topic

#

but for most rooms, expect them to be empy

round crystal
#

that makes sense, that's how we do it but you get a washer + dryer + kitchen stuff

#

Like your stove and dishwasher they provide

glacial knot
#

ye, washer and dryer are mine. Though I'll sell the washer and get a different one so I don't have to move it rooKek

round crystal
#

oh ongy this I found to be very true of germans in general

glacial knot
#

My kitchen is provided. But there's also some where it won't be
or a setup where you can buy it from the previous tenants

round crystal
#

that video accurately describes my experience with every german I've ever met

#

Always that frumpy look, but the friendliest people I've ever met

glacial knot
#

well, yea. Why invest energy in looking friendly when you aren't interacting with people? probsLUL

round crystal
#

Come to Canada and if you're not in a big city, expect people to make small talk with you randomly

glacial knot
#

sounds inefficient. We don't have any leeway beyond bureaucracy...

round crystal
#

You'll be known at your grocery store, local resturaunts, etc

glacial knot
#

yea, people can fuck right off rooKek

round crystal
#

lol

#

Our favourite local resturaunt for brunch (chain one too!) knows us

glacial knot
#

Luckily people didn't do that in Montreal when I was there

round crystal
#

Same with our favourite hotpot and sushi place

#

They know we want certain waiters and tables in certain areas

#

The managers always come out and greet us at our table, etc

glacial knot
#

LoL chains. I'd have to drive to the city to find any rooKek

round crystal
#

yea, no montreal is a different beast

#

People are really friendly, but you better be ready to at least try some french

#

Also expect the homless people to be very well dressed

#

and very polite

glacial knot
#

but yea, after a couple months people start talking to you here probsLUL

#

once they actually recognize your face as regular

round crystal
#

Our neighbours in our new building are talking to me

#

they're 90% people in their 70s

glacial knot
#

due to position constraints of the head units

#

or you have to do some very obvious jank

round crystal
#

oof.

#

Speaking of homes and home automation

glacial knot
#

in this aparment it'd mostly work. But our radiators are fed from the bottom and often in places with not that much space

round crystal
#

One thing I'd love to see is an app for VR headsets / XR glasses to control our smart homes

iron granite
#

You mean walking around and using switches on the wall?

round crystal
#

I feel attacked

#

I mean something like XR glasses where you can look around at things like your fridge and see what you have inside, what you need to buy

#

Or at the AC and just speak to control it without a smart speaker nearby

#

etc.

glacial knot
#

they should make glass front fridges

#

just litter smart speakers around the house

round crystal
#

We have the tech for it

#

we just gate keep it behind $5k fridges

glacial knot
#

I kinda want to do a stupid thing and litter enough microphones to do beam forming

round crystal
#

do it

#

Apple and Samsung are fumbling with UWB

#

It would be nice to point our phones at devices and get contextually aware controls

glacial knot
#

universal warner bros?

#

oh, ultra wide band yagaGa

round crystal
#

I really hope VLLMS pan out

#

If we're not going to use UWB or other tech, why not use cameras?

glacial knot
#

but I'm with Kelp by now. Let's not try to make the best interface. Let's make the interface as redundant as possible

round crystal
#

Lets just kill the interface completely

#

Hey Siri, turn on the lights

#

Hey Siri, turn the lights on

glacial knot
#

For cars, we've seen new things
From physical key, to button key, to hands-free. Now we are getting hands-free without buttons. Unlocks on proximity detected (and re-locks within seconds if lost)
And with EVs it's reasonably possible to just start when you put in gear.
Tesla at least trying (I think it works ok?) to figure out which direction you want to go to reduce the shift lever even further

#

No voice. Just automation

round crystal
#

That's a, uh, yikes.

#

I like my push button

#

TBF, my car is silent

glacial knot
#

Push button for what?

round crystal

glacial knot
#

Why? On an EV ๐Ÿคท

#

For ICE I can see it

round crystal
#

Hybrid

#

Our car is so quiet that when the pedestrian warning system turns off you foget it's on

#

I've forgotten to hit park and that it's still on, and when I open the door it immediately engages the brakes and scolds me

#

That's how quiet it is

#

tbf my car scolds me for a lot of things

#

Someone is slowing down to turn infront of me suddenly and I don't hit the brakes hard? Emergency braking warns me it's about to take over

#

Running into my work to grab something quickly that i forgot and I don't turn it off? It lets everyone know it's still on by making a loud high pitch whine

#

Thinks you're not driving well because you can't see the lanes due to torrential downpours? Tells you to take a break

#

I had to actually turn one safety feature off. Lane keep assist. by default it's in a very agressive mode where if it even suspects you didn't notice a car behind you while passing, the wheel with the force of a body builder will violently pull you into your lane even while you signal and you have space to pass because it doesn't like something.

#

It's a hyundai hybrid. So it's absurdly heavy and the power steering heavily compensates your steering

#

you can turn on a dime with your pinky. It's weightless steering. The issue is the safety features don't consider that the wheel suddenly turning to "save you" with such force could actually injure your wrist.

#

You don't get a heads up, it does it then solds you ๐Ÿ™ƒ

glacial knot
#

just drive better probsGalaxy

#

meh, it's 19:30 and still >26ยฐ outside

#

summer sucks

round crystal
#

That's the thing, you'll give 3 cars of space when signalling to move over and the car doesn't like that

#

It really wants you to give even more space even if the person you're passing is slowing

#

Hyundai takes safety to a paranoid level

#

I was leaving a parking spot, checked my blind spots, cameras, etc.

#

Felt like I just got into a car accident as the brakes slammed on their own because it spotted a plastic bag flying in the wind

#

It decided I wasn't paying attention and took over to protect me from a non threat.

#

If the parking lot has a back area facing a road, it detects the cars on the road, 200m away and warns you.

forest edge
#

to be fair many drivers these days needs the car treat them as such

round crystal
#

Oh I agree. But damn this car is paranoid

#

And the one time I needed it to be paranoid, it didn't catch the person cutting the line onto a high offramp who decided to slam to a halt. Thankfully I caught it in time and our car nosedived almost into the road trying to stop

#

Going from >110kmph to 0 in less than 50m isn't fun.

#

Thank god we have all disk brakes

drum breaks are still a thing? rooD

round crystal
round crystal

for the rear wheels

glacial knot
#

o.0 what?

round crystal
#

Our car is half the size of a ford F150 but weighs more than a F150.

glacial knot
#

I know they are a thing here for the bargain bin cars. But anything reasonable? o.0

round crystal
#

There's a very heavy battery under the back seats that really makes braking a bigger challenge

#

I actually wonder how our car handles emergency braking. That day, it engaged the brakes and regen braking. I got >30% charge in seconds

#

But I assume they have big resistors to act as shunts in an emergency where the motor can act as extra braking power

#

Like where else do you send all this energy you're suddenly making?

forest edge
#

nothing wrong with drum brakes

#

cost you way less to have the pads replaced

round crystal
#

Drum brakes with this much weight behind them?

#

That seems like a recipe for death

forest edge
#

what weight?

glacial knot
#

the active breaks are your main ones. So anything it does with the motor is on top of what it did during testing

forest edge
#

you think ANY modren car weighs more than the old one's made prior to disc brakes? lul

glacial knot
#

either weight or speeds. Drum breaks just aren't good breaks on anything that got power ๐Ÿคท

forest edge
#

don't even think full eletric cars weigh more

round crystal
#

It's a heavy SUV that handles like a champ

forest edge
#

not to mention any industrial truck on the road has been and still is drum brakes

#

drum brakes actually better braking force than disc

round crystal
#

front disk, back drum

#

our tucson is all disk brakes

forest edge
#

just like disc brakes, drum has thier cons as well

#

over heated disc brakes is the sam as having no brakes at all

round crystal
#

It's scary.

forest edge
#

and lets dive in abs lol

round crystal
#

it's extremely scary

#

This is what our car looks like

#

Unassuming

#

Looks like it wouldn't be fast. So many people will come up behind me in the left lane and last second switch to the right thinking they'll go around me because I'll be slow at takeoff ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Before their engine is turned over, I'm long gone.

#

Hybrids really are amazing

#

Ours has a big electric motor in place of a torque converter to start the gas engine as needed

#

Hyundai's modern cars are actually really fun

#

Mixed bag in the snow tho

primal laurel

Most of the world can skip hybrids and go straight to full E

round crystal

No dealer wants to sell us an EV unless we tack on 20k of addons we don't want.

#

They say "we can't make a profit unless we do" and refuse to sell if we refuse to turn a $50k ev into a $70k ev before taxes.

#

We tried at multiple dealerships and ended up going hybrid instead

I'm <20m away from a 350kw charger. The cost is the same as gas.

primal laurel
round crystal

the motors last a lot longer than engines, only because you don't have to trust the owner to do maintenance. The grease in them lasts longer than any engine does with propper oil changes

glacial knot
#

yea, because there's so many more parts in EVs that have limited lifetimes than ICE vehicles rooD

round crystal

The issue is you have to trust owners to still get coolant changed

primal laurel

EVs have a much simpler drive train
