I use ZHA, so if I want a second coordinator I have to switch to Z2M and rebuild my network.
Which I'm considering tbh. I don't have enough quality devices to span the physical range I'm crossing with one coordinator.
I have 1 per floor for zigbee. I stick for zw for the entire house.
Zigbee is in the 2.4GHz range, isn't it? That doesn't help if so.
I don't have crosstalk issues
it is, yeah. technically there's a sub-GHz version too though but i don't even know where that's used
I also haven't had interference issues despite being in dense environments for years
I have a mesh router that runs 2.4GHz. No neighbors within range though. And limited BT devices.
But yeah, in my case it's a 5000 sq ft house, but all one floor.
jesus
That needs some coverage.
Yep
that's larger than my entire lot ๐คฃ
definitely doable with a good zigbee mesh though
Lol, the lot here is five acres. I don't want to have to cover that.
Add 3k to that and that's what my single zw stick is covering.
Well yeah, Z-Wave is in the 800MHz range and especially with LR, you get what, a mile LoS?
Lutron is pretty nice too for certain areas you just want to 100% work, but Iโm a bigger fan of Z-Wave personally
I just have zigbee because cheapshit tuya devices were easy to justify. At $3-6 per device, just bin one if it fails. And so far I've only had one device fail.
House is 8200 ๐
dafuq
my entire lot is 3125 sq ft
in other news, this camera's name is "Dungeon" because the brick plus the gate reminds me of Irithyll Dungeon from dark souls 3 ๐คฃ
To be fair, his house is multi-story, so it's probably more reasonable than it sounds.
|| yes, the timestamp is in a dumb place because I'm cropping the substream to fit in a grid of 16:9 cameras) ||
Nice A frame
I'll pass the compliment along to the store that's below me ๐
Also I'm apparently using an entire core (out of 4) solely to crop three streams and rotate one with ffmpeg
I never understood camera resolutions that differ
Shit show when it comes to 2x2 or 3x3
I used to have all 4:3 but then I took an arrow to the knee
Hi, is there a channel for home assistant noobs
I am trying to figure out how big an ssd to get for it,
Start with what you have and expand as you grow
Raspberry pi 4, 4gb, and 32gb sd card, and a SLZB-06M in the mail.
Good to go!
I want to add an ssd so I dont burn out the SD card.
If only HA any SSD for starters would do. I wouldn't think too much about storage if you are starting out. You will change your mind a million times if you stick with HA. ๐
My plan is to stick with HA, I have not seen anything better yet.
And all this started cause I wanted a sensor on my bloody mailbox to send a message to my phone :/
Yep, that's how it all starts.
This. Youโll likely end up switching to a Mini PC before worrying about storage ๐คฃ
I was gonna say exactly that
I didn't want to ruin dreams
Yeah, it is already on my list in a few months if i can find one cheap with at least 4 cores , 16gb ram and under 10w power average
eBay should have tons, that power requirement may be a bit iffy though
I would hover under 30W
atm my goal is sensor for mailbox, main door, a few windows, philips hue light bulbs switches over, and a temperature and humitity sensor, and then later i need to find a good co2 sensor.
power here is expensive, and under 10 should be doable
Oh boy, here we go
Power is expensive all over. But realistically 18W idle with 30W peaks you should be golden.
yeah, that is the same as most wifi routers so that is fine
Come to think of it LLM call is 180W ๐ค
On my Todo list........ Maybe you should just get the straight jacket out now, before I deep dive into the rabit hole, or is it a creator by now?
I want to replace Alexa, cause Alexa has gotten SO MUCH worse the last few years.
I want to be able to say, play audiobook XXX book 4, and have it start book for 4 and not book 10 in the series, or ask for book 10, and it then plays book 6
If I say play audiobook Dreadgod or play audiobook Dreadgod by will wight, it STILL to this day cant. it even says, I did not find an audiobook named dreadgod
Don't know much about Alexa anymore my fleet went to a landfill years ago. Google for me but my goal is not to interact at all all costs. Hopefully you will find your assistant bliss with HA
I just need it to set alarms, and play my audiobooks.
oh and control the lights ๐
audiobooks got added to the music assistant addon a while back, never used it for that but i am sure it works
audible ones?
yeah you can add audible as a provider
I dont even have HA installed yet and I am already in love
just remember to take things 1 step at a time and enjoy the small wins. dont try and do everything at once
.... I am screwed then ๐
once you get going... its definitely a rabbit hole and an ongoing project ๐
As long as backup on it works and I can store my settings for easy hardware upgrade / replace broken sd card, Ill be happy
yeah backup system got overhauled recently and its pretty awesome
sd card is fine for initial learning but you shouldn't use it for very long
Oh, I forgot I am adding smart plugs to most outleads, and that was the main reason at first to go HA, I wanted an offline way to monitor energy usage, then I thought I should add a mailbox sensor, now that it is close enough in my new apartment
nice ๐
Question, I know the Ikea contact sensors have an issue, looks like also the VALLHORN motion sensor has the same buck converter issue, are there other ikea products I should stear clear off?
I got a 128GB NVMe made by SK hynix for my Pi5 for HA. It's about 10% utilized.
It is the logs that are the issue I figure?
Can I install everything on the SD and just redirect the logs to a usb ssd?
Honestly most of it is just the install in general. But yeah, logs will slowly consume space. Best bet for longevity is to set up a network share as your backup location so you have it available if your SD card dies. At that point you don't have to worry about anything really.
yes, you can move the data disk to another drive in the storage settings
the recorder database is a big part of the writes
if your gunna use a usb ssd then just drop the sd card alltogether and just boot from usb
I have yet to use a usb to boot from, been a few years since I last looked into if it was possible on a pi 4 and worked right
I use an m.2 hat myself
yeah you can do it on rpi4 and 5
m.2 hat is a better option. but at this point the investment into the rpi platform is making it not worth it. just get a mini pc instead.
by the time you get rpi/psu/case/hat/ssd you are spending about the same amount as you wood on a n100 mini pc and getting less for it
I have a pi4 atm, and a spare big usb key or even a usb ssd, so I dont need to spend more money atm
my entry cost is the ZigBee dongle
yeah if you already have stuff its fine. and its how alot of people start
The only regret I've had is that faster-whisper still isn't terribly fast on Pi5. Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with everything.
but if you start buying various things you might as well go in the right direction
ill get a mini pc later, i have already thought about getting it, but spend to much money this month, just moved into a new apartment yestoday
faster-whisper ?
yeah its not gunna be good at that
speech to text
Speech to text for voice commands
I am looking at used mini-pc's with intel Gen 4k series and newer cpus
I mean, it's not -that- slow, I just want it faster than it is.
voice pipeline is
speech to text -> processing -> respond ->TTS
i run whisper on my "big server" along with ollama for llm on gpu ๐
will work but its an older celeron chip
something like a "beelink S12" is pretty good but its still going to be a bit limited for local voice
it will run whispers tiny model fairly quickly but its accuracy might not be great
those voice assistant stuff and TTS , are they ram hungry?
In the long run I'll probably just bump voice over to my laptop. I have a few Sun Fire servers that could do the job, but they're loud and the rack is in my bedroom right now. Besides, my laptop has a GTX 1060 6GB that's sitting unused.
STT - yes
TTS - not so much
until recently the server that ran whisper for me had an older 1650 super which ran whisper great. its not got a 5060ti but it does llm too now
Seems like even with StT, I'm not cresting 2GiB usage.
there is also "speech to phrase" which is a lot quicker and runs on lower spec hardware but it cant deal with variables as it only looks for specific patterns
what model are you running?
I wonder if those USB to PCIE would be enough for llms in a mini pc
faster-whisper English
which size though
Honestly haven't seen a reason to increase it. I run into more trouble figuring out what syntax it'll do something with than I do getting it to understand me.
yeah thats fair. thats where the llm comes into play
Don't know how to set that up, haven't looked into it yet.
Yeah, it gets the point across.
Ah, found a word mine doesn't like to transcribe. "Den"
you talk to your HA with "oh my please"?
not really, it was just an example
It does not hurt to be polite to your future AI overlords.
yup, they may be kinder during the uprising
Dammit, not Dan, Den
I would want an LLM Agent, where I could then teach it I ment Den, and it would remember
Technically HA does let me just alias Dan to the Den area.
you could put it in your prompt but a decent llm will compensate for a "typo" anyway
Here's one I didn't notice before. Wonder if I worked around this in the bedroom and forgot.
Apparently yes.
Weird that it doesn't seem to be able to respond without that alias added.
Woo, found an updated firmware for my Z-Wave stick and installed it.
@tidal bronze when you used gemini to help with your frigate false positives did you like upload an image for it to see? or just explain the issue with text?
Just explain
curious if it could use an image from the debug screen to better pinpoint a solution
You can upload a debug image
Will be much faster and accurate answer
Gemini goes by bounding box
I run both gpt and Gemini for answers. Anything HA Gemini is slightly better
So middle earth
Welp, got Simplicity Studio 5 installed on my steam deck. That wasn't quite the device I had intended to use for this, but if it works....
I suppose it's actually preferable, since I can bring it to the device install locations.
Pressing buttons still?
Hm?
If you're unaware, Simplicity Studio 5 is Silicon Labs' IDE for developing for their devices. In this case, the Z-Wave 800 chip they sell for $6.
Zulip
lmao do I seriously have to make a script using the backup action in order to do backups without fiddling with that encryption bs?
Please use a support channel for support questions
Thx
that is crazy
just now got around to looking at the backups. hope they implement a way to turn that off cause having to do it by script is nuts lol
You just need to uncheck it
it forced me into the setup which showed me the key I would have tokeep so I just backed out from there cause was not interested
it doesn't give that impression that you can just bypass dealing with encryption. that needs to be changed
i'll give a looky in a bit
It's located in the setting page of the individual backup location
well hopefully they uncomplicate that cause as of right now the page gives the impression that you have to deal with the encryption and there is no other choice.
when I looked it up it seemed many others did what I did.. see that popup encryption key window then justbacked out lol
You shouldn't have to disable it for it being the best solution for slaps roof of zip all the included auth keys
But it's as shrimple as clicking the big red button for locations you don't want it on
Well that's a lie, the button is white the text is red :P
rather than the setup forcing that encryption key popup maybe if it went into the actual backup page and one could see the option to bypass dealing with that it would be better
People would just not now and then they got a backup with grok or whatever chatbots kids these day like :P
Ye, we really need a way to have HA use a key vault and get all of that out of there
ok i see now
@ongy is there normally a point during WebRTC negotiation where you report back the selected ice pair?
when you click the set up button it takes you to set it up what you want (don't like that it auto creates an encrypted backup right off the bat) but then you can go in and turn off encryption for the location
when you click the back up button at the bottom which is what I did it pops up that encryption key window
I made the mistake of including all addons so now i'm stuck waiting on this backup to finish so I can delete it lol
This brings back memories
wtf are we looking at?
if I had to stab in the dark I would think an older alarm control board
Turn on your sound. It'll become real apparent.
the dialing modem is why I guessed alarm control panel
considering we are looking at a ethernet jack in shot lol
Fair.
No. Selection happens by establishing the connection
It's somewhat inherently happening on both sides at the same time and each side figures it out themselves
I.e. there's no (pure) algorithm that does the selection
Both sides try all candidates at the same time and the first to succeed is then selected
@glacial knot My problem is that the DTLS phase dies at some point right after I send my client hello. The other end never sends a server hello. When I try to handshake, I get a ZeroReturnError.
not sure if its clear enough but it might be possible to decode the DTMF from that video ๐
Yea, that sounds deeper into code than I can guess without knowing the library in question
Sorry
It is ringing to 123456 to just open the line ๐คฃ
Then sending SIA protocol alarm info to the dailer
its cool but you should probably make a post in #1284960456880029707 instead ๐
oooh sorry yes. Lets do that
thanks for the nudge!
Question, is there a good youtube video for a noob to watch about zha vs zigbee2mqtt , i have been googling and reading forum posts, but it feels more like people are debating using ubuntu vs debian or windows vs mac os
This would be a good topic for #1284966617670881350
Then why do you use zigbee everywhere?
Zigbee2everywhere
plus one needs the dumpster fire which is MQTT
and the other works stand alone!
Is there a simply way to get high/low temps for my weather forecast?
Been going down a rabbit hole of template sensors and a bunch of stuff.
Depends on the weather integration, but you're better off asking in #1284966540617449515 or #1284966664357810196
y tho
not every smart plug can monitor energy right?
Correct
I don't want to start another civil war
Did the lastone end already?
got interrupted by all the steam gift card spam
I'm having a hard time figuring out which ones can
Lots, most wifi, a lot of Zigbee ones, usually zwave ones, never 433 ones
I don't know which is which
my options are: wion (wifi), cync, globe, rca, and nexxt (wifi)
but none of them advertise if they do energy monitoring
they don't sell them here
"here"
That sounds like a very slim market
yes
I'm closer to nova scotia than the bahamas
have you tried triangulating instead
I'm going to throw you into the ocean

basically, if you think about it, your job only exists thanks to EE
So my first HA device came in the mail..... all I can do is look at it, and use it as a fidget spinner
So you bought a conbee or a HA yellow then
an aqara temperature and humity sensor
I'm using an old laptop
I'm on a 2U rack server still
doom?
this is doom running on a digital pregnancy test
Can it run doom? Probably
i always find that funny
think of this when atx tells you you need 20 PB of RAM for your home server
This subreddit focuses on odd hardware that runs Doom. Calculators, ATMs, fridges, old video game systems if it has a computer in it, it can possibly run Doom.
Please note that /r/itrunsdoom has gone dark indefinitely in protest of the API changes by Reddit. For more info, see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/1476ioa/red...
my first computer was a commodore vic 20 with ram extensions
I feel so accomplished today, it only took me like 4 months to configure automatic backups into google drive :/
Still remember messing with config.sys and autoexe.bat to get enough free memory needed 622kb to get the good sound in dune 2 ๐
I did that with Tie Fighter
memmaker.bat
still strange to thing i have more storage and cpu/hpu power in my pocket, than all computers I had together in the 90s and even the early 2000s
will be fun to see if the contact sensor i bought can handle sitting outside in a mailbox
my garage door tilt sensors survive -30 F
Then there is hope ๐
I have had my aqara contact sensor on my mailbox 25m from my house for years, in -35c to +35c weather with snow / rain / sun
You guys are making me happy
Now I just need to find a spare magnet for the mailbox flap

even if I get an emporia vue I can't monitor my solar energy output because all 16 clamps would be used.
I keep putting energy off, but I got some dopamine today getting some soil stats

Yep. We got the Doom engine running purely in TypeScript types. Like. For real. Weโve prepared two more videos, one answering โwhy we did thisโ (storytime format) and another answering โhow we did thisโ (technical deep-dive). What would you like to hear about for those?
Itโs all open source: https://github.com/MichiganTypeScrip...
The port itself runs inside three and a half trillion lines of types, totalling a gargantuan size of 177 TB. This is run through Typescript's Type tracker, which takes 12 days to compile the first frame of Doom (0.0000009645 fps). This meant that 20 million type instantiations were running every second in order to get the output.
"Oh and AI can't help with this because its so low level that it has no idea what I'm even doing."

what are you a plant?
Well that was interesting, got a random $300k offer in my LinkedIn mailbox
Best part is, it is a job managing an environment I have delivered, for a US company
did they want you to wear something skimpy?
Pretty sure the recruiter doesn't know that

This is genius because he invented a modern way to install invisible speakers, and if you think it doesnโt work, stay till the end because youโll be shocked. After sealing the speakers into the wall with wall putty, he uses a paint roller to coat the surface, then applies more compound across the entire wal...
you too can have shitty expensive speakers in your wall
audiophiles hate this one simple trick
Does anyone know of a card other than tile that supports card features?
card feature?
I hate when stuff works and just stops working for no good reason..... tinkering with Ollama and it was workign, now it stopped working lol
recommend posting to #1284965988642590891
yea, never seen that before
well............ Ollama for Intel GPU works great for simple stuff, HA commands, it goes boom when I ask it to tell me a 100 word story lol
I despise these monotone AI voice overs which are just basically stealing someone else's content
i find the ai translations worse
brain rot
AI can be funny, just testing out speeds on intel igpu and increasing ram speeds from default to 3200...... here is the response to a 100 word short story involving pirates...
Tell me a 100 word story about piratesIn the year 2025, pirates weren't sailing ships but hacking networks. Captain Redbeard, a notorious cyber-pirate, led his crew through digital seas. Their target: the heavily fortified Home Assistant servers. At 16:47:55 on June 3rd, they struck, exploiting a tiny vulnerability. But Home Assistant's defenses were swift. A counter-attack locked them out, turning their screens to static. Redbeard laughed, "We'll be back." The digital seas were never calm for long
Which one of you is captain redbeard eh?
does anyone actually have a zigbee setup that works 100% of the time? I'm not looking to troubleshoot, just that it seems like something falls off the network about once a month
that could just be that device and nothing to do with your mesh
I had that issue until I went with a POE SMlight adapter, but I'd ask in the support channel
we're getting dangerously close to troubleshooting there @forest edge!
but interesting to hear that it can be reliable
been running it for about 5 years, no issues
I also found the ZBT-1 did not play well with my setup, I want to say it was some beta drivers for z2m, I forget
you moved somewhere to where there are even more people close around you? I call bs
Yes, but the people here avoid each other by nature
the meaning of "grown-up" has been mutilated for quite some time now
I feel that might be mutilated

has anyone managed to get ldap working with HA OS?
@last cedar not cool
I am only able to get gemini pro to assist with like one project before the api alimit cuts me off.. kind of annoying lol
wanted to see if it could improve my camera resize pyscript and it did a good job but it like instantly cut me off after lol
You burnt through a million tokens?you can't be that dense
suffering crippling debt? ๐
am I suppose to feel bad for those who are? confused where this came from
Other than a defective device, the only time I've had things drop off is when batteries die.
well by how you talk I assume you're a boomer.
... and that statement sorta confirms it tbh.. ๐
lol I get the joke. if you are not suffering from crippling debt you are a boomer...
I don't see that. I use https://gemini.google.com/app/
it's just a chat window
that looks complicated lol
Nopes.
thats weird.. so the thing I been using dosen't even count towards those tokens yet it's the same ai lol
Don't judge AI just make it do the work for you. Keep it simple
so each prompt is a token? or each word?
Imagine using non-local services.
Up and down stream per chat
Plenty for your task at hand
gemini 2.5 pro locally would be kind of cool
Start your project with. No explanation short answers
its not flawless by any means but so far has done a decent job helping me fix some coding issues
It's all in your prompt style.
lol the explantion eats into the tokens
I wonder if the thing I use is doing that
have been using
Gemini goes in depth with HA logic and internals which I don't care for.
yea it dumps out this whole long explanmtion thing
Yep
but now that you mention it, maybe thats what eats my limit withon project lol
You can also say just give me the yaml
I mean it resets like 4 hours later
so it's not too bad
but still, was like asking one thing, got answerthen hit limit lol
The key is start a new chat with all the backgrounds from previous chat. End with keep it short and just give me the yaml
"close the lip and give me the goods"
Yep
so this studio thing. once you max the tokens is that it? no more ever or does those tokens reset?
That's per chat. If you are smart you know what to do.
oh i see
Don't even bother with explaining non working automations. Export csv from history tab from trigger and condition entities upload. Ask it to fix it.
well I don't go that far. so far only ever had it help me with a complex garage door automation and pyscripts
I just copy paste them
I uploaded my entire package dir to gpt memory. It's something else lol. Knows almost every entity. Will suggest stuff that I didn't even think of like doing 30 min wind speed statistics sensor to eliminate trigger flapping
I don't do packages
I had 460 odd automations that I did added about 100 more with gpt in about a month
Memory is key so, I ask go through my entities and suggest.
Memory always fascinates me. Gpt will say, hey why not add dining room lux as a condition to eliminate false triggering
oh you are multi ai involved.. yea thats beyond my scope
Like my patio shades Gemini is 10x better calculating shade angles from a Google earth screenshot than gpt
Gpt memory is super cool since the yaml it outputs already contains covers switches lights etc from your packages.
Well, I guess I can put some effort in and figure out the cause of my zigbee woes. Thanks for the feedback!
i didn't think chatgpt was very good with code especially HA stuff
least from the stuff others have been saying
Misconception. I hear it all the time and it's completely BS. Some jinja is janky but overall, outstanding.
This negative shit is partly ego. Nothing real
Even bad jinja copy paste error log and fixed in next reply. Simple as that
lol
Gemini, flawless with jinja but for day to things my go to is gpt for memory. "Look up project files and......" WIN ๐
I don't mind asking for more complicated stuff but other than that I don't need to add more crap than I already have lol
I am not asking AI to complicate, just to simplify. I have done enough with 463 automations ๐คฃ
463 is complicate lol
should add a few moreautomation to help keep you up to date on the world outside your home lol
This is why Claude has won for me. "Oh, you have access to all my files, github, and can call and test the API's you're writing? Yes, that sounds great"
@forest edge when I started and uploaded packages
yea i'm sure it's assement of mine would make for a good joke
"what the hell am i looking at?"
Lol. For deep technical stuff copy from gpt paste to Gemini FTW
How can you not love
are you trying to shoot the dog with water..
seems broke. should be"see dog > water on full blast"

Yeyy finaly setted up my home assistant PI and some door sensor
my local university had this yearly for their admins way back. separate classes for laptops, workstations and servers. if a particular phased out computer had caused you much grief you could apply to throw that one in the competition.
Was surprisingly easy and fun to do
Out of curiosity: does anybody else miss the old discord setup with these normal channels rather than threads?
HA Discord now feels more like a second forum rather than a live interaction alternative to old school forums
Don't let Atx bully you for using a raspi ๐คฃ
More raccoon shitposting now so I see it as a win
Great video for sure and the print looks great! We could look into adding some holes for some ventilation for the CO2 sensor.
Hmm. Measuring the climate at ceiling level isn't really useful.
lol i was just curiously goofing around when I used gemini and linked my super complex camera rotation automations/scripts and asked if it could condense and improve it and holy shit.. I don't even understand what it spit out but it works lol
So it made it unmaintainable, lol
Classic ai maneuver
in a way yea I guess it did
Also dis u
๐
there is a diffrence between that comment and coding too advanced for my brain
push comes to shove i'll probably figure this out in time if something breaks
Still I gotta heckle a little bit
I was actually expecting the ai to give me some crap that didn't even work or wasn't what I actually asked for but it only took it 137 second to turn my 697 lines of text into something that is like 80% smaller than what I had
course there are some bits I have yet to see if they work cause I need detections and its too early in the am for that but it got the other stuff right
AI is quite good a coding. But deteriorates quickly on larger projects
people would lose jobs if it didn't
Highly doubt it
Ai is good at prototyping. But it messes up good code or mixes up everything. It needs to made better it can send minimal diff changes. That will take a while
Btw are russian out of the window memes allowed or politics?
Can you guess my answer?
Ai also makes up apis that didn't exist and math that doesn't work
But that's what happens when you have a word prediction engine vs real life rules
I can extrapolate your reply

Not if you feed it with the api docs
๐คฃ
Assuming it listens
It will still make up apis
Also apparently it's more or less helpful based on your name
It's a tool. Gotta know the limitations
(the wife's work has a big ai project and it'll work for some people and not others)
My dentist husband is in a big AI law thing. Isnt going so well.
(I just keep mocking chat gippity)
Judges are not happy with fake law cases and rules
Relying on mouth to mouth propaganda? ๐คฃ
No i ask. Its a small model that uses a offical search engine? She said no they feeded some model if lots of text.
Those are called โinternsโ
If it parses some usecase. Searches for simulair cases. Then think about it it could work. But AIbros throw all logical code out of the window.
What kind of ai project
ugh just sitting here waiting for someone to trigger one of the frigate occupancy sensors is like watching paint dry
https://www.unilad.com/technology/news/ai-startup-actually-powered-by-people-975483-20250603 now this is my sort of ai news
The start-up company that said it's powered by artificial intelligence has filed for bankruptcy since it was exposed.
They are at the point where chaning one button costs 2500 euro so prolly not interns
Startup's ai was 700 engineers in a trenchcoat
Wrapping a bunch of tooling into an ai so you can say "hey can you create this with x y z parameters" and then it'll ask you for remaining inputs etc and create everything on the backend
But it keeps making up tools, ignoring inputs, and then if someone Else asks the same request, it'll work for them
Btw if i let AI code with out telling use this lib this way or do that. It terrible. You need your IT kills.
Not using MCP?
Model context protocol
Though I guess the answer was always going to be hell if I know
Basically tell AI what tools it has and how to address them in a standardized way
I do very different work on embedded systems
Yeah they do that
It still ignores it
Cause ai

Finally got Matter working on my Home Assistant box and actually managed to pair a Matter device. woo
People just flash esphome
Yeeeesss my alarm activation routine have worked ๐ฅณ
Now i only need to setup the remote acces with a VPN to desactivate it,then i can add all the sensor and it should be fully working
/me works in AI and is slowly backing out of the chat
but I prompt real good, please sir
fwiw using phrases like "human readable" and "follows best practices to generate readable code" can help with claude specifically, in my experience. But I've never turned it loose on a legacy application and asked it to just generically "make it better"
thats like asking a fresh graduate to "optimize this code" - they're almost certainly going to come back with something worse.
plus we wouldn' thave things like pug-igion without AI.
As long as you don't start talking about prompt 'engineering'
uh, as someone who actually writes code for a living, that is not a thing.
The quality of LLM output is directly proportional to the user's likelihood of seeing faces in toast
Perceived or measured quality?
perceived of course
Ah my LLM prompt engineering skills got a ++
Google sending me memories of the pictures I took is always worth a laugh

ah yes, I remember the lack of sleep fondly
BTW, I have the same type of "here, let me show you how to set the DIP switches..." pics
or why are the LEDs in this weird pattern?
@glacial knot I got it working! The problem was the aiortc library was limiting the dtls to 4 ciphers and chrome was offering 11 and at least one of those 11 works with my camera but those 4 do not. WireShark told me what they were and I modified aiortc to offer the one I saw it accept and now I get data!
This was especially funny because the gif took 30 seconds to load for me ๐
could I ask for suggestions on smart plug energy monitoring/inverter monitoring or should I ask in #the-workshop?

Guys help, do i need to pray the ominisiah for m'y esp cam to work ?
Strugling with it for like 2h and it still cant conect to the wifi lmao
Stop buying tuya
Sorry, force of habit
I have some tuya door sensor, am i cooked ?
Do you have any recomandation for such device ?
Is there realy a diffรฉrence between the cheap Chinese one and the more expensive ones?
some of the tuya zigbee stuff does work but its a bit cheap and nasty. the wifi stuff is really bad because it depends on their cloud system.
a big part of it, is if you value time, saving a bit of money but spend 3 days making it semi work. instead of paying more and having it working in minutes
I am oversimplifying but its the general idea of what can happen
Some of the Tuya zigbee stuff (e.g. microwave presence and power sensors) spam the shit out of the zigbee network too.
The spammiest tuya device I have is a luminance sensor, and it's still not that bad. But yeah, zigbee all the way, I'd never touch their wifi garbage.
Greez. Re posted a bug i found during a beta. Clear it worked in beta .x next beta it does not work. But have issues with developer whitebox blindness. Not reading or understanding an issue.
Okay good to know
As far as now, everything worked well, alarm, and sensor
Chat GPT comming in clutch lmao
IF i mean IF only here
Wanna join me for a glass of wine at DUMBO?
I don't want to stare at the night sky with you.
why don't you ever take pictures from the local nudy bar or something
Yuk
if QF says yuk then you know it's good
How can anything else be nicer than this?
you could have more wine in your glass
how did you go from night to day in a few mins?
by reducing the amount of wine in the glass
What would be the correct support category if I wanted to merge 2 entities into like a single custom entity?
Templates or config?
I don't man, meetings are sometimes stressful
stressful? the bar not have the drink you been waiting on all day? lol
What do you mean by 'merge'? Concatenate strings? Add up values?
Hey guys! I made this very little web app to collect voice samples:
https://github.com/helv-io/WakeWave
An instance of it is currently running on https://wakewave.helv.io (please feel free to contribute your beautiful voices). No post processing is currently being done, I just wanted to gauge whether this is a project that's worth expanding on, eventually. Please don't send garbage, my dog would be sad. Silence and BG noise encouraged.
Anyways, thoughts, opinions, etc?
cool, but belongs over in #1284960456880029707
Thanks, posted there!
Just found out the hard way that having two views of the same dashboard open in edit mode in two different browser windows is a bad idea. Accidentally hit "Done" in the wrong one and lost 45 minutes of dashboard reworking ๐ฆ
doesn't matter if it were diffrent browsers or diffrent tabs in the same browser
my son connected a mill (brand name) heater via wifi. when he kept it close to the router, reset it, restarted his phone, tried and tried again it eventually connected. and it was stable after that. took him a week of frustration before it suddenly cooperated.
Question for the Admins, out of sheer curiosity, what's the member to banned accounts ratio? Trying to compare with a different server. ๐
where are you getting that?
Number of users devided by the number of banned accounts.
we have 11 pages of bans at either 50 per page or 100 per page (not gonna count). So we are either at .76% or .38%
17 pages with each 100
I only see 11 pages
If you click on page 11, the next ones show up.
oh, stupid
So about 1700 banned accounts (maybe a bit less)
(1646/144027) = 1.14%
it's 100 per page, last page has 46
most bans are spammers
@modest smelt ^
Was too lazy to count the last page
I was too lazy too but I got curious if each page was 50 or 100
and I counted the last page and said "fuck"
Made you math ๐
then counted the 2nd to last page but compared to the scroll bar. 50% of the scroll bar was at 50 count
so I counted to 96
it's gonna be 1647 jorg, watch yourself
@fathom sparrow So we have to ban Mraedis now?
I have a wife, a family, please ๐
and are we the golden standard for fast trigger fingers?
No this is one of the few tech related discords I'm in of sufficient size
We probably ban 3 or 4 spammers a day
Keeping the target audience in mind it's probably the only one
Most legit users behave well enough, most bans are spammers/spam bots.
I'd say that we probably have less than 100 bans for people who were asshats
Mechkeys might compare but probably has a lot more unruly users
people who actually get banned are always a topic of conversation in the mod channel and it's always been relatively light. Most people are fine
We were actually just surprised by the very low ban count, spam accounts included
although there's a guy who's probably got 15 bans because he keeps creating new accounts to harass Jorg ๐คฃ
There is also one on page 17 with lots of iterations.
Our onboarding process for the server really cuts down on spammers
thank missy for that
The worst kind of people
Yes, jorg is the worse

Im in a cyber security group. And if you dont onboard right. (Like you dont know the difference between hacking and cyber security ( You get the leet hackor role. Send to a seperate side of the server and being trolled
For my site i made a php backend where you need to sign up 1st. If you dont do that and join the server your send to the alien department

Feels weird to me that Z-Wave LR isn't mesh. It makes sense, but it feels wrong.
LR defeats the purpose of a mesh
but a zwave LR node can still participate in a mesh. So you could have mesh <-> LR <-> LR <-> mesh
Seems useful for the folks with a barn or workshop or guest house
you rang
my LR4 in the basement is random as hell when it wants to connect to the network and when it doesn't
I can go months without issue then out of the blue it's like it can't connect
if I reset my wifi it will reconnect or if I leave it alone (and drive me nuts) it will eventually reconnect
I really wish my kid would not get such good grades so I didn't have to bribe him with computer hardware :/
I told him at teh start of the trimester if he got straight A's I'd buy him a new graphics card.... what does he do, gets over 100% in 4 classes and above 95% in the others...... just ordered a 9070xt grumble

oh I hate mandatory online training, especially when they put artifical timers when you have to read things.... some of us read at higher speeds then others.
Anyone know a place to off load a soonoff zigbee stick and an aeotec wave stick. I recently upgraded to the tubez dual radio kit. Iโd hate to just throw them away.
Are you American?
yes
omg this training sucks so bad, 1.5minute videos that stop when they aren't the focus
60 minutes of this crapola
horrible video, then press a few buttons then press continue..... rinse and repeat not my learning style.... torture
I'm so glad that the mandatory "security refresher" in our organisation has a "for accessibility" all-on-one-page transcript.
That said, there's literally one question (out of about 25) where the answer is some oddly industry-specific figure that I'd never bother to commit to memory so must be looked up, and the remainder are "don't be a numpty" level that they didn't even have the courage to try and trick you with, just straight up three hilariously terrible answers and one obviously correct one
ohhh now I have a force dtimer so I can write stuff down, 90 seconds really omg torture

well even if it was brief it was good you got to experince some real life.
You may want to look and see if there's a flashable router firmware for that stick. If so, you can flash that and use it as a very nice range extender.
I plan on picking up some extra SLZB-07s for that purpose, since right now I'm relying on garbage routers to get across this house.
they made the "newer" T1 aqara sensors be able to pair with routers and not just the coordinator right? I know someone had mentioned something in here but too lazy to use the search
never mind. apparently the T1 is still something that is rare
Oh. You turned my fan on.
Oh great a upgrade on my pi zero installed snapd. Claiming 30% cpu doing nothing

@forest edge you can send the "special" filament now, so I can start work on the army
Why do you have a ship from a shoot-em-up holding your filament?
The metal shelf to the right?
Not got around to moving that yet, the whole garage is a proper shit-tip

Anyone with any recommendations for a EU available benchtop power supply? Don't mind paying say 100 euro, but would rather pay as little as required for a quality product! Tyvm
This thing. It reminds me of Phalanx or R-type or something

do raccoons wash their filiment before using it?
Is a mini PC better for running home assistant than, say home assistant yellow or green? Fairly silly question but I wonder if that's the case for anyone.
Depends on what youโre doing with it. #1284966353798697001 would be the place for further discussion
I get the feeling most HA people have a dozen other tech things they want to do, mine grew out of a NAS

But then you miss the lols when you take a bath with your boat
I thought I could do all my prototyping and probably 95% of everything I wanted on this, and either pay for abs/ asa prints or grab a "x1" in a long time
Bathing with a cotton candy boat would not spark joy, that is for sure
My goal is to print some non cotton candy based raccoons and boats and make a raccoon navy
Going to make the meme about plastic in the ocean a reality
Also going to print eyepatches and swords
Why would any goal to be print?
when did thunderbird have its interface overhauled? actually looks decent now
Anyone running their own weather station?
Yep, Tempest
Interesting, looks very different from all the weather stations ive seen over the years. Theres no spinny things ๐
precise weather management
what the frick is this doing
Dang, is that the future or is it going to fail in 3 months?
I can literally tell it I want it to be sunny

I've had mine for maybe 7 years? Since they were a kickstarter project
Is there a comparison toward ecowitt?
Battery/Solar powered, no power cable? Dang this thing seems too good to be true
The current model is nice because it's solar powered and I don't need to take down the flag pole that it lives on to change batteries
It's pretty nice
Does it integrate to Wunderground too?
Temp readings aren't ideal. I also have their original Air unit that lives in the shade and gives me better temp readings. But they don't make it anymore
Yes, or it did
Pretty sure I feed data to WU, and can then mine it as well.
Because I'm providing data
I need decoys to preserve raccoon numbers
Solar/battery. Self contained.
this is the most american thing. having a flag pole
I got the I guess knockoff from Ecowitt https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TZZTYPK which has been running for about a year now with no issues
Looks similar
yah.. it's using a capacitor for the solar charging, so should last a good long while
ecowitt got the naming confusing
this is the GS90
the GW is just the gateway
:P
theoretically a couple of their displays can also act as one for mqtt and stuff
aaah interesting.. yeah that's the kit I got.. I'm amused the gateway is also recording indoor temp and humidity
they have a big ahh matrix to tell you about the features of each of them
its just not intuitive at all
yeaaah
I forget who's video I watched for setting up HA integration, but that works pretty well, too
I need to get a solar weather station at some point. Though the real challenge is figuring out where to set it up. We get some impressive wind, so that can complicate things.
And then there's winter snow and ice too.
yeah that can make it challenging. The wind isn't too bad here (50-60mph max), so mine is going up on a pole at the apex of my roof
Thatโs not a bad idea!
there definitely is for the CC2652-based sonoff stick
I assume there is for the EFR one too but I don't know off the top of my head
sure thing, selling your own kind back to you sounds like a profitable partnership
Oh, I didn't realize the router firmware for the SLZB-07 was first party. That's cool.
@forest edge you got bad weather in middle earth?
No? what gave you that idea?
Look at that pile of shit in the middle. Had to droop down to Atlanta, 1 hour late for dinner.
thats not really "middle" lol
That's middle for me.

How can help me please
There are support channels. Make a thread in whichever one is most relevant.
Yes but I donโt know I can do my problem on what three you can go mp ??
I said I donโt know which thread to put my problem in can you go mp ??
Not sure what "go mp" means, but you should be able to decide based on the contents of #find-support

Not really ๐ Wife's like why at 11 AM? I said best seats for overhead speakers.
is that the middle of the theater? cause I could give two shits about speaker placement as long as I'm in the middle center row lol
I think I just made Gemini give up. Had this already complex cat weight sensor going but was trying to get it to output some other information. rather than really reading what it was giving me I would just paste it then paste the HA error from the log back into the ai (was kind of curious if it would "learn"). this went back and forth for like 7 times then it told me it couldn't give me what I wanted lmao
I think gemini has a more "human" aspect to it than chatgpt
It's not the movie it's the speaker placement and nachos
I think chatgpt understands some HA jinja a little better than gemini but gemini is certainly more "creative". it will auto put in fallbacks and other suggested changes (even if those changes break it lol)
Gpt is bad at HA jinja
what theater is this that have ultimate chicken nachos?
Dine in AMC
Dine in and valet and I am happy
This isn't your parents' theater
The quality and comfort of the home theater raised the bar a lot
The last time I was in a theater I was close to yelling at the guy behind me for talking throughout the whole thing
I was just at an AMC theater last year. we still had some old gift cards to burn up. it hadn't changed
think it was last year or theyear before that
I still have some free passes from like 10 years ago
yea ours were much older lol
I don't know if they're still good
well not "passes" they were just money gift cards
Food and drink prices are outrageous. I should check often ๐
just sneak your own tucked in your underwear
That's a recipe for warm wine
Middle earth issues, always!!!!
Part of the reason i've gone once in the last 12 years
@forest edge why on earth do you guys have shit weather, always?
Go with sangria. It's one of the few things that holds up warm.
Meant to disable ping on that. Whoops.
I'm vaguely tempted to cruise through HACS to see if I can find anything interesting to mess around with. Out of sheer boredom. This seems dangerous.
have you lost your marbles?
Ew, that humidity.
so we get some rain from time to time.. you could have used such weather not that long ago lmao
Marbles or JuJubees I am late because we had to skip middle earth.
well that's just because we intentionally try and prevent you people from coming anywhere near us.
if someone from california was to ask me how the weather was cause they wanted to come this way i'd tell them we were experiencing a tornado, hurricane, earthquake and volcano eruption all at the same time
Hey now, California has a claim on earthquakes. That's cultural appropriation.
This crack me up. So true!
there was a video on youtube that was like titled "the daily life of a software engineer" and the dude worked for like amazon or something and this video showcased the week he was "on-call".
He complained like having to "work so much" yet showed he didn't even go to work till after 9am, left work at 5pm. he would sleep AT WORK, showed him eating at these places that I guess give huge discounts to local workers or some crap. after work he would go out to like a bar with friends and shit but yet constantly complained to the camera that he got no sleep, worked all the time
Waiting for the next audition
blah blah blah
these are like warning lights to me.. shit is going to crash cause at some point enough people "aren't really going to be working" is going to cause like this massive halt in the system
ai can only tackle so much lol
@static schooner not fair!
Can confirm
Man, I just realized the SLZB-07 is $30. But they work so much better than the shitty $5 Tuya routers I have now. It's almost like I got what I paid for.
Ah well, I'll buy the replacements when I have actual income again.
You can rob a bank any day
Yes, but I have a pulled back right now, I wouldn't get time to enjoy robbing a bank.
Not sure if this is support...looking to find out if this is possible....
Lost 1 of 2 wireless earbuds today. Was wondering if there's any way to see all BT devices picked up by my BT/ESP32 nodes and the RSSI?
don't think too many in this channel use BT.
Paired phone would be the best place to start
I just saw this, might be what you need.
https://github.com/agittins/bermuda
Never used it, so can't review it.
(eventually) Triangulate device positions! Like, on a map. Maybe.
Heh. I love honest devs
Would be a cool feature, but I can absolutely understand why it'd be a pain to implement.
I do use some BLE and RF fans etc
why would you use RF for your fans? convert that shit already
Most converted to sonoff ifan. Some I am lazy
well if you like your fans, hold onto them as long as you can. newer fans made today are shit. I been looking to replace one of mine
I agree
My goal has been to keep everything to zigbee/z-wave and off wifi. Partially because I have an IP reservation protocol and I don't like violating it. And I only allocated around 20 IPs for IoT.
Though if IoT devices start embracing ipv6 that'd be moot.
But why?
Why what?
Why limit. Makes little sense
- With wifi devices, I have to either block WAN or accept that it's shuffling my data into the ether. Half the time I have to rely on privacy-ambiguous services to integrate that hardware. Not my preference. I like everything local.
- I have a shitload of network devices. I'd rather not clutter 2.4GHz (very little IoT even supports 5GHz) with any more than there already is.
- I like my IP addresses neat and orderly. I know 10.0.0.8x will be game systems for instance. This is comfortable. I may have a touch of the 'tism.
My iot devices get their own VLAN, where they can chill without having any contact with anything but the home assistant VM.
Also their own SSID, with client isolation enabled so they can't talk to each other, either
I'm in a 5000 sq.ft. house with a four-node mesh router. I don't currently have the option of adding an SSID, and it's not as cheap and easy as just throwing another router in the mix at that scale.
- about 170 zw and 40 0r 50 zigbee works like a charm.
how many routers
2 x zigbee
said routers, not cordinators
I'd imagine he means zigbee routers.
I have... Five dedicated routers (four are shit), five lightbulbs (four are shit), and a luminance sensor (kinda shit).
Oh wait! Six lightbulbs (five are shit)
Oh, and two smart plugs (these seem fine)
I honestly don't know. I don't care much for zigbee network.
Basically if it's powered by plugging in to a wall, ceiling, or USB, it's probably a router.
then why do you have 40-50 of them? lol
I do use them but don't put much effort into it.
I do want to get z-wave devices, but at this point I'm looking at building my first few. Most stuff I'm interested in doesn't come in z-wave, is too expensive, or in some cases doesn't meet my specifications for one reason or another.
The last one there mostly applying to smoke alarms. Legally I'm pretty sure they have to be hardwired here, but hardwired and smart don't really mix.
...I wonder if it's legal to build your own smoke alarm and use it. Would have the advantage of being able to make the sensor swappable so you don't have to bin them all every 10 years. Just buy new sensors and swap them in.
...huh. This may actually be worth investigating. Still going to run $150 or so to replace all the sensors (plus the initial cost of the rest of the hardware), but that's a hell of a lot cheaper than smart detectors, and it can meet housing code.
it's not a matter of "legal" it's a matter of insurance and insurance will deny a house fire from a house with "custom" fire alarms
we actually had a discussion like this in this channel once already
we as in people in this channel
I will mess with anything but fire/smoke alarms.
I put those x-sense one's in moms house. been pretty pleased with them so far
not "crazy" about the whole cloud api aspect of them and requiring a hub etc but the units themselves are solid
I don't have an alarm but fire is connected. I let the professionals handle that.
i don't use the house alarm through them
I have these ridiculously tiny things
https://www.cavius.com/2002-10-year-smoke-alarm/
Their bigger ones have wireless to set them all off at once, and some kind of hub you can buy, but these ones are just standalone
mesh was a requirement for me
i didn't want the basement one going off and my mom not hearing it so I needed them all to trigger. and the voice prompt saying which one set them off is nice
Worth consideration, yeah. All I want is the ability to identify which alarm is chirping or went off. Big house, 10-15 alarms (I can't be arsed to count them right now), and some strange topology to make the chirp direction unclear. It can be a real pain to identify where the right one is. And being able to see battery level would be nice too.
Will probably buy the wireless ones in 2030 when the current lot are due for replacement. But I'm not replacing them early if I don't have to
technically they are all wireless lol
Listen here you little shit...
I would, but at around $30 each -minimum-, that's a costly replacement for 10+ alarms.
by law here smoke alarms have to have battery (even as backup). not sure if the wireless mesh is required by law but know they all have it. even the zwave ones
wired smoke alarms are a dead fad anymore
why you buy the packs
I think i got 7 for like 50 bucks lol
Never seen them that cheap.
amazon
packs
it helps when the company is somewhat new too.. seems like any company that "blows" up the price does too. first alert is a prime example of that
they wanted like 70 bucks for one mesh talking smoke slarm at one point
when our first alert(s) die in this house i'm switching to x-sense
Lol, I was just looking at x-sense. Every single one has to be connected individually to wifi?
no
and you gotta be careful cause they have a mesh line and a non mesh line
they require the hub and the hub only connects to your network via wifi but the alarms all connect to the hub with the same mesh frequency
some 900ish mhz
Ah, the ones I was looking at say they can't connect to the hub.
XS0B-MR are the smoke ones. the MR at the end i think indicates if they are mesh ones
that or it indicates they are the talking ones
can't remember
Wonder if there's an option to have my cake and eat it. Get the homemade alarm explicitly tested and approved by the insurance company in advance. They'd probably just refuse though.
Looks like going with x-sense would run me about $400. Using the bundles.
just how many would you need
I could go around and count, but it's somewhere in the 10-15 range. I'm estimating 11 for that $400.
well if you are living in a mansion then 400 shouldn't be an issue
Living in a big house doesn't mean I'm loaded. My parents had their dream house built, then while it was being built a flood came through and -literally- ripped our prior house in half, sending most of our belongings down the river in the process.
We live in the dream house, but between that flood, a shitty contractor, and a startup company that got greedy and screwed us, we manage. We don't thrive.
Proof, because why not.
well depending on the layout you could cut some corners. smoke does rise afterall
Honestly the biggest pain is the detector mounted near the high point of a room with a sloped ceiling that peaks at... I want to say 18 feet?
Just went around and counted. 11.
I found one I didn't realize was there and found one lacking where I thought there was one. So my count from memory turned out right either way.
you know if all you needed was a means of knowing when a smoke alarm went off there are other ways to achieve that. prior to me switching to x-sense I was using sound detection in frigate which has a fire alarm model
if any of the cameras that could record sound heard a fire alarm went off I used HA to notify me
but you could probably rig up some kind of sound recorder
even if it wasn't through frigate that means was from a stand alone project that was impoirted into frigate so you wouldn't have to have frigate
It's not a bad idea. Apparently we use AAA for home insurance, so getting a homemade detector approved could actually happen potentially. I'll build a PoC at some point and find out. Worst case I have an extra detector to throw somewhere.
you would have to look to see if an intergration already exsists for HA or not tho
We have the obnoxious beeping detectors, no fancy voice ones, so easy to detect.
Hm... Actually, I was considering getting a pile of ESP32s to use with Bermuda, I suppose I could get ones with a microphone.
I got these little custom button cards on my dashboard that I been meaning to make them look better so I figured I would see if gemini could help me with that... nope.. it completely barfed trying.
yeesss
just realised my struggle with my ESP cam was due to the wifi repeater wich block dns or smth
Shit is real
it isn't often that it is dns for me, but now it has been dns twice in 4 days ๐ first i forgot to boot one of my dns servers after a power outage, then a dns problem for my work thin client
Fun having adaptive lights
