I do have zigbee just as backup zones for zw zones. House runs even if the 2 zigbee coordinators are not operational

atomic delta
#

I use ZHA, so if I want a second coordinator I have to switch to Z2M and rebuild my network.

#

Which I'm considering tbh. I don't have enough quality devices to span the physical range I'm crossing with one coordinator.

tidal bronze
#

I have 1 per floor for zigbee. I stick for zw for the entire house.

atomic delta
#

Zigbee is in the 2.4GHz range, isn't it? That doesn't help if so.

tidal bronze
#

I don't have crosstalk issues

scenic radish
#

it is, yeah. technically there's a sub-GHz version too though but i don't even know where that's used

#

I also haven't had interference issues despite being in dense environments for years

atomic delta
#

I have a mesh router that runs 2.4GHz. No neighbors within range though. And limited BT devices.

#

But yeah, in my case it's a 5000 sq ft house, but all one floor.

scenic radish
#

jesus

tidal bronze
#

That needs some coverage.

atomic delta
#

Yep

scenic radish
#

that's larger than my entire lot ๐Ÿคฃ

#

definitely doable with a good zigbee mesh though

atomic delta
#

Lol, the lot here is five acres. I don't want to have to cover that.

tidal bronze
#

Add 3k to that and that's what my single zw stick is covering.

atomic delta
#

Well yeah, Z-Wave is in the 800MHz range and especially with LR, you get what, a mile LoS?

hoary canyon
#

Lutron is pretty nice too for certain areas you just want to 100% work, but Iโ€™m a bigger fan of Z-Wave personally

atomic delta
#

I just have zigbee because cheapshit tuya devices were easy to justify. At $3-6 per device, just bin one if it fails. And so far I've only had one device fail.

tidal bronze
scenic radish
#

dafuq

#

my entire lot is 3125 sq ft

#

in other news, this camera's name is "Dungeon" because the brick plus the gate reminds me of Irithyll Dungeon from dark souls 3 ๐Ÿคฃ

atomic delta
#

To be fair, his house is multi-story, so it's probably more reasonable than it sounds.

|| yes, the timestamp is in a dumb place because I'm cropping the substream to fit in a grid of 16:9 cameras) ||

I'll pass the compliment along to the store that's below me ๐Ÿ˜‚

#

Also I'm apparently using an entire core (out of 4) solely to crop three streams and rotate one with ffmpeg

tidal bronze

I never understood camera resolutions that differ

#

Shit show when it comes to 2x2 or 3x3

scenic radish
#

I used to have all 4:3 but then I took an arrow to the knee

cursive kindle
#

Hi, is there a channel for home assistant noobs

#

I am trying to figure out how big an ssd to get for it,

tidal bronze
#

Start with what you have and expand as you grow

cursive kindle
#

Raspberry pi 4, 4gb, and 32gb sd card, and a SLZB-06M in the mail.

tidal bronze
#

Good to go!

cursive kindle
#

I want to add an ssd so I dont burn out the SD card.

tidal bronze
#

If only HA any SSD for starters would do. I wouldn't think too much about storage if you are starting out. You will change your mind a million times if you stick with HA. ๐Ÿ˜€

cursive kindle
#

My plan is to stick with HA, I have not seen anything better yet.

#

And all this started cause I wanted a sensor on my bloody mailbox to send a message to my phone :/

tidal bronze
#

Yep, that's how it all starts.

hoary canyon
scenic radish
#

I was gonna say exactly that

tidal bronze
#

I didn't want to ruin dreams

cursive kindle
hoary canyon
tidal bronze
#

I would hover under 30W

cursive kindle
#

atm my goal is sensor for mailbox, main door, a few windows, philips hue light bulbs switches over, and a temperature and humitity sensor, and then later i need to find a good co2 sensor.

cursive kindle
tidal bronze
#

Power is expensive all over. But realistically 18W idle with 30W peaks you should be golden.

cursive kindle
tidal bronze
#

Come to think of it LLM call is 180W ๐Ÿค”

cursive kindle
#

I want to replace Alexa, cause Alexa has gotten SO MUCH worse the last few years.

#

I want to be able to say, play audiobook XXX book 4, and have it start book for 4 and not book 10 in the series, or ask for book 10, and it then plays book 6

#

If I say play audiobook Dreadgod or play audiobook Dreadgod by will wight, it STILL to this day cant. it even says, I did not find an audiobook named dreadgod

tidal bronze
#

Don't know much about Alexa anymore my fleet went to a landfill years ago. Google for me but my goal is not to interact at all all costs. Hopefully you will find your assistant bliss with HA

cursive kindle
#

I just need it to set alarms, and play my audiobooks.

#

oh and control the lights ๐Ÿ™‚

dawn badge
#

audiobooks got added to the music assistant addon a while back, never used it for that but i am sure it works

cursive kindle
#

audible ones?

dawn badge
#

yeah you can add audible as a provider

cursive kindle
#

I dont even have HA installed yet and I am already in love

dawn badge
#

just remember to take things 1 step at a time and enjoy the small wins. dont try and do everything at once

cursive kindle
dawn badge
#

once you get going... its definitely a rabbit hole and an ongoing project ๐Ÿ™‚

cursive kindle
#

As long as backup on it works and I can store my settings for easy hardware upgrade / replace broken sd card, Ill be happy

dawn badge
#

yeah backup system got overhauled recently and its pretty awesome

#

sd card is fine for initial learning but you shouldn't use it for very long

cursive kindle
#

Oh, I forgot I am adding smart plugs to most outleads, and that was the main reason at first to go HA, I wanted an offline way to monitor energy usage, then I thought I should add a mailbox sensor, now that it is close enough in my new apartment

dawn badge
#

nice ๐Ÿ™‚

cursive kindle
#

Question, I know the Ikea contact sensors have an issue, looks like also the VALLHORN motion sensor has the same buck converter issue, are there other ikea products I should stear clear off?

atomic delta
cursive kindle
#

Can I install everything on the SD and just redirect the logs to a usb ssd?

atomic delta
#

Honestly most of it is just the install in general. But yeah, logs will slowly consume space. Best bet for longevity is to set up a network share as your backup location so you have it available if your SD card dies. At that point you don't have to worry about anything really.

dawn badge
#

the recorder database is a big part of the writes

#

if your gunna use a usb ssd then just drop the sd card alltogether and just boot from usb

cursive kindle
#

I have yet to use a usb to boot from, been a few years since I last looked into if it was possible on a pi 4 and worked right

atomic delta
#

I use an m.2 hat myself

dawn badge
#

yeah you can do it on rpi4 and 5

#

m.2 hat is a better option. but at this point the investment into the rpi platform is making it not worth it. just get a mini pc instead.

#

by the time you get rpi/psu/case/hat/ssd you are spending about the same amount as you wood on a n100 mini pc and getting less for it

cursive kindle
#

I have a pi4 atm, and a spare big usb key or even a usb ssd, so I dont need to spend more money atm

#

my entry cost is the ZigBee dongle

dawn badge
#

yeah if you already have stuff its fine. and its how alot of people start

atomic delta
#

The only regret I've had is that faster-whisper still isn't terribly fast on Pi5. Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with everything.

dawn badge
#

but if you start buying various things you might as well go in the right direction

cursive kindle
#

ill get a mini pc later, i have already thought about getting it, but spend to much money this month, just moved into a new apartment yestoday

#

faster-whisper ?

dawn badge
dawn badge
atomic delta
cursive kindle
#

I am looking at used mini-pc's with intel Gen 4k series and newer cpus

atomic delta
#

I mean, it's not -that- slow, I just want it faster than it is.

dawn badge
#

voice pipeline is
speech to text -> processing -> respond ->TTS

#

i run whisper on my "big server" along with ollama for llm on gpu ๐Ÿ™‚

dawn badge
#

will work but its an older celeron chip

#

something like a "beelink S12" is pretty good but its still going to be a bit limited for local voice

#

it will run whispers tiny model fairly quickly but its accuracy might not be great

cursive kindle
#

those voice assistant stuff and TTS , are they ram hungry?

atomic delta
#

In the long run I'll probably just bump voice over to my laptop. I have a few Sun Fire servers that could do the job, but they're loud and the rack is in my bedroom right now. Besides, my laptop has a GTX 1060 6GB that's sitting unused.

dawn badge
#

until recently the server that ran whisper for me had an older 1650 super which ran whisper great. its not got a 5060ti but it does llm too now

atomic delta
#

Seems like even with StT, I'm not cresting 2GiB usage.

dawn badge
#

there is also "speech to phrase" which is a lot quicker and runs on lower spec hardware but it cant deal with variables as it only looks for specific patterns

dawn badge
cursive kindle
#

I wonder if those USB to PCIE would be enough for llms in a mini pc

atomic delta
dawn badge
atomic delta
#

Default is tiny-int8

#

So that

dawn badge
#

yeah thats pretty small ๐Ÿ™‚

#

model is like 50 meg or something

#

sorry ~110

atomic delta
#

Honestly haven't seen a reason to increase it. I run into more trouble figuring out what syntax it'll do something with than I do getting it to understand me.

dawn badge
#

yeah thats fair. thats where the llm comes into play

atomic delta
#

Don't know how to set that up, haven't looked into it yet.

dawn badge
#

silly example but whatever

atomic delta
#

Yeah, it gets the point across.

@tidal bronze when you used gemini to help with your frigate false positives did you like upload an image for it to see? or just explain the issue with text?

tidal bronze

forest edge

tidal bronze

You can upload a debug image

Welp, got Simplicity Studio 5 installed on my steam deck. That wasn't quite the device I had intended to use for this, but if it works....

#

I suppose it's actually preferable, since I can bring it to the device install locations.

tidal bronze
#

Pressing buttons still?

atomic delta

Hm?

#

If you're unaware, Simplicity Studio 5 is Silicon Labs' IDE for developing for their devices. In this case, the Z-Wave 800 chip they sell for $6.

glacial knot

Please use a support channel for support questions
Thx

forest edge

that is crazy

#

just now got around to looking at the backups. hope they implement a way to turn that off cause having to do it by script is nuts lol

solar zealot
#

You just need to uncheck it

forest edge
#

it forced me into the setup which showed me the key I would have tokeep so I just backed out from there cause was not interested

solar zealot
#

Well yea and you just select it not to do that afterwards

forest edge
#

it doesn't give that impression that you can just bypass dealing with encryption. that needs to be changed

#

i'll give a looky in a bit

solar zealot
#

It's located in the setting page of the individual backup location

forest edge
#

well hopefully they uncomplicate that cause as of right now the page gives the impression that you have to deal with the encryption and there is no other choice.

#

when I looked it up it seemed many others did what I did.. see that popup encryption key window then justbacked out lol

solar zealot
#

You shouldn't have to disable it for it being the best solution for slaps roof of zip all the included auth keys

#

But it's as shrimple as clicking the big red button for locations you don't want it on

#

Well that's a lie, the button is white the text is red :P

forest edge
#

rather than the setup forcing that encryption key popup maybe if it went into the actual backup page and one could see the option to bypass dealing with that it would be better

solar zealot
#

People would just not now and then they got a backup with grok or whatever chatbots kids these day like :P

glacial knot
forest edge
#

ok i see now

haughty wolf
#

@ongy is there normally a point during WebRTC negotiation where you report back the selected ice pair?

forest edge
#

when you click the set up button it takes you to set it up what you want (don't like that it auto creates an encrypted backup right off the bat) but then you can go in and turn off encryption for the location

#

when you click the back up button at the bottom which is what I did it pops up that encryption key window

#

I made the mistake of including all addons so now i'm stuck waiting on this backup to finish so I can delete it lol

Number of users devided by the number of banned accounts. shksD

@forest edge why on earth do you guys have shit weather, always?

atomic delta

Meant to disable ping on that. Whoops.

I'm vaguely tempted to cruise through HACS to see if I can find anything interesting to mess around with. Out of sheer boredom. This seems dangerous.

Ew, that humidity.

forest edge

so we get some rain from time to time.. you could have used such weather not that long ago lmao

We got some rain. It shows.

Still dropped under 10% humidity midday though.

# tidal bronze This crack me up. So true!

there was a video on youtube that was like titled "the daily life of a software engineer" and the dude worked for like amazon or something and this video showcased the week he was "on-call".

He complained like having to "work so much" yet showed he didn't even go to work till after 9am, left work at 5pm. he would sleep AT WORK, showed him eating at these places that I guess give huge discounts to local workers or some crap. after work he would go out to like a bar with friends and shit but yet constantly complained to the camera that he got no sleep, worked all the time

these are like warning lights to me.. shit is going to crash cause at some point enough people "aren't really going to be working" is going to cause like this massive halt in the system

Man, I just realized the SLZB-07 is $30. But they work so much better than the shitty $5 Tuya routers I have now. It's almost like I got what I paid for.

Ah well, I'll buy the replacements when I have actual income again.

Lost 1 of 2 wireless earbuds today. Was wondering if there's any way to see all BT devices picked up by my BT/ESP32 nodes and the RSSI?

don't think too many in this channel use BT.

Heh. I love honest devs

Would be a cool feature, but I can absolutely understand why it'd be a pain to implement.

#

well if you like your fans, hold onto them as long as you can. newer fans made today are shit. I been looking to replace one of mine

tidal bronze
#

I agree

atomic delta
#

My goal has been to keep everything to zigbee/z-wave and off wifi. Partially because I have an IP reservation protocol and I don't like violating it. And I only allocated around 20 IPs for IoT.

#

Though if IoT devices start embracing ipv6 that'd be moot.

tidal bronze
#

But why?

atomic delta
#

Why what?

tidal bronze
#

Why limit. Makes little sense

atomic delta
#
  1. With wifi devices, I have to either block WAN or accept that it's shuffling my data into the ether. Half the time I have to rely on privacy-ambiguous services to integrate that hardware. Not my preference. I like everything local.
  2. I have a shitload of network devices. I'd rather not clutter 2.4GHz (very little IoT even supports 5GHz) with any more than there already is.
  3. I like my IP addresses neat and orderly. I know 10.0.0.8x will be game systems for instance. This is comfortable. I may have a touch of the 'tism.
ocean oar
#

My iot devices get their own VLAN, where they can chill without having any contact with anything but the home assistant VM.
Also their own SSID, with client isolation enabled so they can't talk to each other, either

atomic delta
#

I'm in a 5000 sq.ft. house with a four-node mesh router. I don't currently have the option of adding an SSID, and it's not as cheap and easy as just throwing another router in the mix at that scale.

tidal bronze
#
  • about 170 zw and 40 0r 50 zigbee works like a charm.
forest edge
tidal bronze
#

2 x zigbee

forest edge
#

said routers, not cordinators

atomic delta
#

I'd imagine he means zigbee routers.

#

I have... Five dedicated routers (four are shit), five lightbulbs (four are shit), and a luminance sensor (kinda shit).

#

Oh wait! Six lightbulbs (five are shit)

#

Oh, and two smart plugs (these seem fine)

tidal bronze
atomic delta
#

Basically if it's powered by plugging in to a wall, ceiling, or USB, it's probably a router.

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

I do use them but don't put much effort into it.

atomic delta
#

I do want to get z-wave devices, but at this point I'm looking at building my first few. Most stuff I'm interested in doesn't come in z-wave, is too expensive, or in some cases doesn't meet my specifications for one reason or another.

#

The last one there mostly applying to smoke alarms. Legally I'm pretty sure they have to be hardwired here, but hardwired and smart don't really mix.

#

...I wonder if it's legal to build your own smoke alarm and use it. Would have the advantage of being able to make the sensor swappable so you don't have to bin them all every 10 years. Just buy new sensors and swap them in.

#

...huh. This may actually be worth investigating. Still going to run $150 or so to replace all the sensors (plus the initial cost of the rest of the hardware), but that's a hell of a lot cheaper than smart detectors, and it can meet housing code.

forest edge
#

we actually had a discussion like this in this channel once already

#

we as in people in this channel

tidal bronze
#

I will mess with anything but fire/smoke alarms.

forest edge
#

I put those x-sense one's in moms house. been pretty pleased with them so far

#

not "crazy" about the whole cloud api aspect of them and requiring a hub etc but the units themselves are solid

tidal bronze
#

I don't have an alarm but fire is connected. I let the professionals handle that.

forest edge
#

i don't use the house alarm through them

ocean oar
forest edge
#

mesh was a requirement for me

#

i didn't want the basement one going off and my mom not hearing it so I needed them all to trigger. and the voice prompt saying which one set them off is nice

atomic delta
ocean oar
#

Will probably buy the wireless ones in 2030 when the current lot are due for replacement. But I'm not replacing them early if I don't have to

forest edge
#

technically they are all wireless lol

ocean oar
#

Listen here you little shit...

atomic delta
#

I would, but at around $30 each -minimum-, that's a costly replacement for 10+ alarms.

forest edge
#

by law here smoke alarms have to have battery (even as backup). not sure if the wireless mesh is required by law but know they all have it. even the zwave ones

#

wired smoke alarms are a dead fad anymore

forest edge
#

I think i got 7 for like 50 bucks lol

atomic delta
#

Never seen them that cheap.

forest edge
#

amazon

#

packs

#

it helps when the company is somewhat new too.. seems like any company that "blows" up the price does too. first alert is a prime example of that

#

they wanted like 70 bucks for one mesh talking smoke slarm at one point

#

when our first alert(s) die in this house i'm switching to x-sense

atomic delta
#

Lol, I was just looking at x-sense. Every single one has to be connected individually to wifi?

forest edge
#

no

#

and you gotta be careful cause they have a mesh line and a non mesh line

#

they require the hub and the hub only connects to your network via wifi but the alarms all connect to the hub with the same mesh frequency

#

some 900ish mhz

atomic delta
#

Ah, the ones I was looking at say they can't connect to the hub.

forest edge
#

XS0B-MR are the smoke ones. the MR at the end i think indicates if they are mesh ones

#

that or it indicates they are the talking ones

#

can't remember

atomic delta
#

Wonder if there's an option to have my cake and eat it. Get the homemade alarm explicitly tested and approved by the insurance company in advance. They'd probably just refuse though.

#

Looks like going with x-sense would run me about $400. Using the bundles.

forest edge
#

just how many would you need

atomic delta
#

I could go around and count, but it's somewhere in the 10-15 range. I'm estimating 11 for that $400.

forest edge
#

well if you are living in a mansion then 400 shouldn't be an issue

atomic delta
#

Living in a big house doesn't mean I'm loaded. My parents had their dream house built, then while it was being built a flood came through and -literally- ripped our prior house in half, sending most of our belongings down the river in the process.

#

We live in the dream house, but between that flood, a shitty contractor, and a startup company that got greedy and screwed us, we manage. We don't thrive.

#

Proof, because why not.

forest edge
#

well depending on the layout you could cut some corners. smoke does rise afterall

atomic delta
#

Honestly the biggest pain is the detector mounted near the high point of a room with a sloped ceiling that peaks at... I want to say 18 feet?

atomic delta
#

I found one I didn't realize was there and found one lacking where I thought there was one. So my count from memory turned out right either way.

forest edge
#

you know if all you needed was a means of knowing when a smoke alarm went off there are other ways to achieve that. prior to me switching to x-sense I was using sound detection in frigate which has a fire alarm model

#

if any of the cameras that could record sound heard a fire alarm went off I used HA to notify me

atomic delta
#

I have no cameras though. :P

#

Well, other than the one in my 3d printer.

forest edge
#

but you could probably rig up some kind of sound recorder

#

even if it wasn't through frigate that means was from a stand alone project that was impoirted into frigate so you wouldn't have to have frigate

atomic delta
#

It's not a bad idea. Apparently we use AAA for home insurance, so getting a homemade detector approved could actually happen potentially. I'll build a PoC at some point and find out. Worst case I have an extra detector to throw somewhere.

forest edge
#

you would have to look to see if an intergration already exsists for HA or not tho

atomic delta
#

We have the obnoxious beeping detectors, no fancy voice ones, so easy to detect.

#

Hm... Actually, I was considering getting a pile of ESP32s to use with Bermuda, I suppose I could get ones with a microphone.

forest edge
#

I got these little custom button cards on my dashboard that I been meaning to make them look better so I figured I would see if gemini could help me with that... nope.. it completely barfed trying.
